  1. You are listening to a message from Southwood Presbyterian Church in Huntsville, Alabama.

  2. ! Our passion is to experience and express grace. Join us.

  3. Kids, love for you to come up here on the stairs with me this morning.

  4. We're going to talk a little bit more about God's love.

  5. I don't know if you all know which story we're talking about this morning.

  6. But this might be a hint.

  7. Jonah.

  8. Oh, more excitement than that.

  9. Jonah.

  10. Jonah, that's right.

  11. Eleven years ago, I preached on the book of Jonah for several weeks.

  12. Do you all remember that?

  13. Yeah?

  14. You don't remember that?

  15. All of them remember that.

  16. That's an orca.

  17. It may be.

  18. We're not really sure exactly what kind of fish it was, are we?

  19. This is Hanaj, okay?

  20. This is my friend Hanaj.

  21. That's Jonah spelled backwards, okay?

  22. You think about that.

  23. Yes.

  24. And he helped us learn back then that Jonah wasn't really about Jonah.

  25. The story of Jonah wasn't even about the fish that swallowed Jonah.

  26. The story of Jonah is really about God, okay?

  27. It's about God's love for us, what we were just singing about.

  28. Now, does getting swallowed by a fish sound like love to you?

  29. It doesn't really seem like that, does it?

  30. But this is very important to Hanaj, okay?

  31. He was helping God out.

  32. He was actually helping God rescue Jonah, okay?

  33. He wasn't doing something mean to Jonah.

  34. He was helping God rescue Jonah.

  35. Why did God have to rescue Jonah?

  36. Because he was swallowed.

  37. Okay, even before that, why did God need to send the whale?

  38. Did God tell Jonah to go somewhere?

  39. And which way did Jonah go?

  40. He ran the other way, didn't he?

  41. When God told him to go somewhere and he went, have you ever run the other way?

  42. When like maybe your parents have told you to clean your room or eat broccoli or be nice

  43. to a kid who's mean to you?

  44. Have you ever run the other way?

  45. We all have, haven't we?

  46. And when, when we run away from God, we really need to be rescued, don't we?

  47. When we're running away from God.

  48. This reminded me, I was talking with Hanaj this week about another animal.

  49. Do you know this book?

  50. No.

  51. Has anybody ever seen this book?

  52. It's called The Runaway Bunny.

  53. If you've never read it before, I'm going to tell you what happens and I'll show you some

  54. of the pictures.

  55. Some of you have read this one before, okay?

  56. And I'll show you the pictures of the big book.

  57. But this, there's this little bunny and he decides that he wants to run away from his

  58. mother.

  59. He tries becoming all sorts of different things to get away from her, like a rock.

  60. He tries becoming a boat.

  61. He tries becoming a little boy.

  62. All things that a little bunny is not supposed to be, right?

  63. Who does that sound like?

  64. Does that sound like Jonah to you?

  65. Well, here's the best part of this story.

  66. I'll show you the pictures.

  67. No matter what he does, his mother always comes to find him.

  68. So when he becomes a rock on a mountain, she becomes a mountain climber and climbs up to

  69. find him on the mountainside.

  70. And then when he becomes a boat, his mother becomes the wind and blows him right back to her.

  71. And then he becomes a little boy.

  72. And she becomes a mother and catches him in her arms and hugs him.

  73. That's how the story goes.

  74. No matter what he does, the mother bunny always finds him and always loves him.

  75. You know, that's what Jonah's story is about too.

  76. We're going to talk about it this morning.

  77. And what you're going to see is no matter how Jonah runs away, and he does it some different

  78. ways, God never stops loving Jonah, does he?

  79. God even sends a whale to rescue Jonah because he loves him so much to keep him from drowning

  80. in the sea.

  81. Even when we disobey and run away from God, do you think he stops loving us?

  82. He doesn't, does he?

  83. Never stops.

  84. And Hanaj reminds us that even if God has to send a whale, even if God has to send his own

  85. son, Jesus, to die, he will never stop loving us.

  86. We remember that?

  87. Let's pray for just a minute, and then you can go back to your seats.

  88. Jesus, we're so thankful that no matter what we do, you come after us and you don't stop

  89. loving us.

  90. Would you teach us that this morning?

  91. Would these kids know more of your love today?

  92. Would you make us people who so are grateful for how you love us, that we love others that

  93. way?

  94. Teach us now as we look at your word, in Jesus' name, amen.

  95. All right, you can go back to your seats, or some of you are going to kids' worship with

  96. Miss Afton right back there.

  97. Hey, Aaliyah, will you hold on to Hanaj for me during the sermon?

  98. Make sure he doesn't get out of control, okay?

  99. I have that exact whale, but a smaller one.

  100. Oh, you got a smaller one?

  101. It's a good one.

  102. Thank you.

  103. We are skipping forward about a hundred years this morning as we've been walking through

  104. the Old Testament and God's stories and what he's doing.

  105. We're moving all the way from the prophet Elijah, who's calling God's people back from

  106. idols into relationship with the one true God, to the prophet Jonah, serving in the rebellious

  107. kingdom of Israel in the eighth century BC.

  108. And he's calling God's people back to him again.

  109. Like all of the prophets, this is what they do.

  110. God sends them to say, come back, come back.

  111. You're running away.

  112. You've forgotten who you are and who I am.

  113. But this time, God sends Jonah to another kingdom, to the Assyrian kingdom, to their capital, Nineveh.

  114. He sends them to Nineveh to call them to repentance from their evil ways.

  115. And Jonah famously says, no, to God.

  116. This is how it starts.

  117. Now the word of the Lord came to Jonah, the son of Amittai, saying, arise, go to Nineveh,

  118. that great city, and call out against it, for their evil has come up before me.

  119. But Jonah rose to flee to Tarshish from the presence of the Lord.

  120. He went down to Joppa, found a ship going to Tarshish, so he paid the fare and went on board

  121. to go with them to Tarshish, away from the presence of the Lord.

  122. You get the point, don't you?

  123. Away from the presence of the Lord.

  124. We'll see later, Jonah didn't want these enemies of Israel to repent, to experience the mercy

  125. and forgiveness of God.

  126. Jonah wanted to get away from God's command, yes, but even more from God's presence altogether.

  127. He didn't want to be around him anymore, so he runs away.

  128. But it's not just ancient prophets or modern kids who run away from God, is it?

  129. You know, you don't have to board a ship and sail the opposite direction God sends you in order

  130. to run away from him.

  131. Many, of course, run away from God in just licentious living, living however they want,

  132. not how God wants.

  133. Living for self, not for others.

  134. No care about anything else, just whatever feels good.

  135. But, you know, closer to a parallel with Jonah's running away, you can run away from God even

  136. by running into church.

  137. Where I'm going to look and feel religious, but I won't have to deal with God personally.

  138. I can just kind of be there and look the part.

  139. Sometimes we fool even ourselves, don't we?

  140. Or we can run away from God in our relationships.

  141. I think if you're in a relationship like this, where you're refusing to forgive a family member,

  142. where you're refusing to reconcile with a friend who has hurt you,

  143. where you're refusing to love an enemy, yeah, that's so old-fashioned.

  144. That's not how we do it anymore.

  145. We just argue online, and we just, if we don't agree with them, we don't like them.

  146. Love your enemy, that's so out of date.

  147. Well, we may go to church on Sunday and celebrate and sing about God's heart full of mercy.

  148. I need that for me, right?

  149. He forgives my sins.

  150. But then we refuse to consider whether our hearts have the same shape as his Monday through Saturday,

  151. or whether there's perhaps unforgiveness still lurking there.

  152. It's imprisoning us in anger.

  153. It shows up like that.

  154. It shows up as bitterness sometimes.

  155. Because that's what happens in our hearts, the book of Jonah is written to God's people.

  156. It's written to really do two things.

  157. First, to show us God's heart.

  158. What's he like?

  159. How does his heart beat?

  160. What does he love?

  161. And to help us run, as it were, a heart cath on ourselves.

  162. Does my heart beat like God's?

  163. Have I been so overwhelmed by his mercy that I've personally begun to share it?

  164. Or am I actually living distant from God, focused only on myself, freezing out others?

  165. Commentator Colin Smith writes,

  166. Jonah is about the disturbing possibility that having pledged our life to God,

  167. we could end up spending much of that life avoiding the God we set out to serve.

  168. You may have already discovered this strange contradiction that lies at the heart of all Christian experience.

  169. While loving Christ, you find yourself turning from him.

  170. While trusting Christ, you often battle fear and anxiety.

  171. While serving Christ, you sometimes struggle with disappointment about certain events in your life.

  172. You are not alone.

  173. So did Jonah.

  174. Okay, we're going to start with God's heart.

  175. Jonah, prophet Jonah, show us God's heart.

  176. What do we learn about him?

  177. Just look through this story at all the people God's mercy chases after.

  178. In the first chapter, God, of course, has to chase after his runaway prophet.

  179. But while so doing, we see his mercy to some sailors.

  180. These sailors were pagans with a variety of gods, we find out.

  181. Even these sailors seem to reflect God's heart more than Jonah.

  182. They are more concerned about the welfare of this prophet they've never met than he is about theirs.

  183. They try hard not to throw him overboard, don't they?

  184. They row hard, but to no avail.

  185. And so even when they do have to throw Jonah over, they cry out to Yahweh, to Jonah's God.

  186. Please don't hold it against us.

  187. Verse 14.

  188. They called out to Yahweh,

  189. O Yahweh, let us not perish for this man's life,

  190. and lay not on us innocent blood.

  191. For you, O Yahweh, have done as it pleased you.

  192. So they picked up Jonah and hurled him into the sea,

  193. and the sea ceased from its raging.

  194. Then the men feared Yahweh exceedingly,

  195. and they offered a sacrifice to Yahweh and made vows.

  196. How do they respond?

  197. When the storms calmed down,

  198. they worship,

  199. sacrifices,

  200. vows to the one true God.

  201. I mean, here these men were,

  202. just minding their own business,

  203. just sailing to Tarshish again,

  204. got to do some business,

  205. make a little money,

  206. living their lives with no consideration

  207. of the one true God.

  208. God.

  209. And all of a sudden,

  210. God's mercy boards their boat

  211. through this prophet.

  212. This is what happens, by the way,

  213. people of God,

  214. wherever He sends you.

  215. Even when you're not in a good place with Him,

  216. He's using you.

  217. His mercy's flowing.

  218. His mercy just starts sloshing

  219. over the sides of their boat,

  220. so to speak, doesn't it?

  221. God really does love to rescue people,

  222. doesn't He?

  223. In spite of us, sometimes.

  224. Remember, we keep seeing through this big story

  225. in the Old Testament

  226. how God is restoring people

  227. to relationship with Him

  228. because that's what He made them for,

  229. and His love is so big.

  230. Even when you think He's just going after Nineveh,

  231. He's got sailors He's going to save along the way.

  232. The sailors' lives are changed forever.

  233. But God is specifically pursuing

  234. His runaway prophet, isn't He?

  235. This is the fish part.

  236. This is the part you know.

  237. End of the chapter, verse 17.

  238. And the Lord appointed a great fish

  239. to swallow up Jonah.

  240. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish

  241. three days and three nights.

  242. I think most of us hear the story of Jonah

  243. and assume that getting eaten by a fish

  244. is punishment for his runaway disobedience.

  245. That seems to make sense, right?

  246. And they are certainly connected.

  247. But the storm that God sends

  248. because He controls all of creation,

  249. and then the fish that He sovereignly directs

  250. to swallow Jonah

  251. aren't so much painful punishment

  252. to get back at Jonah,

  253. but painful providence

  254. to get Jonah back,

  255. to bring him home.

  256. God's discipline in our lives,

  257. it's often painful.

  258. But those hardships are crafted by Him

  259. to track down our runaway hearts,

  260. to remind us of our absolute dependence upon Him.

  261. You can't go anywhere, Jonah.

  262. What were you thinking?

  263. God's coming to get you back.

  264. Jonah actually sees this.

  265. That's one of the reasons

  266. we know it's what's happening.

  267. In fact, Jonah has the clearest vision

  268. that he gets in the whole story.

  269. When?

  270. When he's in the belly of a whale.

  271. Something about difficult circumstances,

  272. isn't there?

  273. It helps us see more clearly.

  274. Have you had that happen in your life?

  275. Oh, it's reminding me

  276. what really matters.

  277. Who's really in charge and in control?

  278. Where's life really found?

  279. Oh, I'm starting to see it.

  280. I'd lost sight of it.

  281. And it's these hard things

  282. that come into my life

  283. that God uses

  284. to show me that.

  285. How far

  286. will this crazy,

  287. merciful God go

  288. to make sure

  289. that just one of His chosen people

  290. sees and shares His heart?

  291. I mean, we've seen God

  292. do all sorts of things

  293. to rescue

  294. in all sorts of situations.

  295. Bringing Israel out of Egypt

  296. through the Red Sea.

  297. That was amazing.

  298. Gentile Rahab

  299. in Jericho.

  300. Little David

  301. before the giant Goliath.

  302. God keeps rescuing,

  303. bringing people

  304. into relationship with Him.

  305. But we've never seen

  306. someone rescued

  307. with a whale

  308. until now.

  309. God can use

  310. anything.

  311. And He does.

  312. Doesn't He?

  313. I've talked to some of you

  314. lately.

  315. I know He

  316. uses shutdowns

  317. to slow us down.

  318. To call our hearts

  319. back to Himself.

  320. He uses illness

  321. to remind us

  322. of dependence on Him.

  323. Of how every breath

  324. we have comes from Him.

  325. To call our hearts back.

  326. to remind us

  327. that we need

  328. His people

  329. around us.

  330. He uses even death.

  331. The great enemy

  332. that He hates.

  333. But He uses it

  334. to give us

  335. a clear vision

  336. of eternity.

  337. Doesn't He?

  338. The relative brevity

  339. of life here

  340. where we so often

  341. try to find meaning

  342. and purpose

  343. and hope.

  344. And He reminds us

  345. there's only one

  346. secure place

  347. to find hope.

  348. What a great mercy.

  349. Even when it hurts

  350. as it does.

  351. See Jonah cries out

  352. from the depths

  353. of despair.

  354. You've never been

  355. in the belly

  356. of a fish

  357. but can you imagine

  358. it's not an encouraging

  359. place to be.

  360. He's as low

  361. as he could go

  362. and watch what happens

  363. with Jonah's prayer.

  364. Chapter 2 verse 7.

  365. When my life

  366. was fainting away

  367. barely, barely alive

  368. I remembered the Lord

  369. and my prayer

  370. came to you

  371. into your holy temple.

  372. What he's saying

  373. through this prayer

  374. is that from the furthest

  375. possible distance

  376. from God

  377. Jonah's been intentionally

  378. going there hasn't he?

  379. Running away.

  380. Jonah's prayer does what?

  381. It walks right

  382. into the throne room

  383. of God

  384. into the holy

  385. throne room

  386. of God

  387. in His holy

  388. presence.

  389. Y'all prayer

  390. is amazing.

  391. No matter how far

  392. you've gone

  393. this doesn't happen

  394. because Jonah

  395. is good.

  396. He's not.

  397. He hasn't been.

  398. This is because

  399. Jonah is God's

  400. and God is good.

  401. And so when he cries

  402. out from the worst

  403. place, the furthest

  404. possible place away

  405. his prayer comes

  406. into the presence

  407. of God.

  408. That's what happens

  409. when you pray.

  410. Jonah realizes

  411. for himself

  412. as that happens

  413. salvation

  414. belongs

  415. to the Lord.

  416. It is Yahweh's

  417. to bestow

  418. on anyone

  419. even the most

  420. desperate,

  421. even the most

  422. undeserving.

  423. Salvation

  424. is something

  425. Jonah realizes

  426. I am desperate

  427. to receive

  428. because I don't

  429. own it.

  430. I don't have

  431. it on my own.

  432. And as he realizes

  433. that the great fish

  434. which has saved

  435. Jonah physically

  436. and it seems

  437. possibly spiritually

  438. restored him

  439. releases him

  440. back to the land

  441. at God's command.

  442. hand.

  443. So this time

  444. Jonah decides

  445. to obey.

  446. He doesn't really

  447. want, I mean

  448. as helpful as

  449. the belly

  450. of the whale

  451. was, once

  452. was enough.

  453. I'll go to

  454. Nineveh

  455. chapter 3

  456. verse 3

  457. So Jonah arose

  458. and went

  459. to Nineveh

  460. this time

  461. according to

  462. the word

  463. of the Lord.

  464. Now Nineveh

  465. was an exceedingly

  466. great city

  467. three days journey

  468. in breadth.

  469. Jonah began

  470. to go in the city

  471. going just

  472. a day's journey

  473. and he called out

  474. yet 40 days

  475. and Nineveh

  476. shall be overthrown.

  477. That ought to

  478. convert him, right?

  479. And the people

  480. of Nineveh

  481. believed God.

  482. They called

  483. for a fast

  484. and put on

  485. sackcloth

  486. from the greatest

  487. of them

  488. to the least

  489. of them.

  490. Nineveh

  491. the capital city

  492. of the Assyrian

  493. empire

  494. full of people

  495. but full

  496. of wickedness.

  497. They were famous

  498. for that.

  499. They were

  500. ignoring God.

  501. You can count

  502. on it.

  503. This is exactly

  504. the kind of people

  505. Jonah couldn't

  506. stand.

  507. Those people

  508. who ignore

  509. God.

  510. There's a lot

  511. of irony there.

  512. He wasn't

  513. interested in

  514. seeing them

  515. receive forgiveness,

  516. get mercy.

  517. But somebody

  518. was.

  519. Who was?

  520. God was.

  521. Remember for God

  522. the recipients

  523. of his mercy

  524. are not winners

  525. of awards

  526. for good performance.

  527. They are humble

  528. repenters.

  529. That's what happens

  530. throughout Nineveh

  531. from the king

  532. to all the people.

  533. It's humble

  534. repentance.

  535. They're desperate.

  536. And God responds

  537. well with mercy.

  538. Verse 10

  539. When God saw

  540. what they did

  541. how they turned

  542. from their evil way

  543. God relented

  544. of the disaster

  545. that he had said

  546. he would do to them

  547. and he did not do it.

  548. I hope that's a reminder

  549. to all of us

  550. this is not just

  551. for some

  552. crazy Nineveh

  553. out there

  554. in Iraq

  555. somewhere

  556. hundreds of years ago.

  557. This is about

  558. the nature

  559. of relationship

  560. with God.

  561. Your relationship

  562. with God

  563. should feature

  564. repentance.

  565. Maybe that's not

  566. a real popular word

  567. but repentance

  568. regularly

  569. specifically

  570. desperately

  571. it's not a

  572. one time thing

  573. that happens

  574. in your life

  575. and then you

  576. move on

  577. you don't need

  578. to repent anymore.

  579. No

  580. to speak of

  581. Martin Luther

  582. on this

  583. nearly

  584. Reformation Day

  585. he said

  586. the whole

  587. lifestyle

  588. of a Christian

  589. should be

  590. one

  591. of repentance.

  592. That's what it

  593. means

  594. that relationship

  595. with God

  596. comes by grace

  597. alone

  598. through faith

  599. alone

  600. in Christ

  601. alone

  602. that it's not

  603. about your

  604. performance

  605. it's about

  606. your repentance

  607. your dependence

  608. upon him

  609. we never

  610. get over

  611. our need

  612. for Jesus

  613. and so we

  614. regularly

  615. what do I mean

  616. by that

  617. I mean like

  618. more than

  619. once a week

  620. when we do it

  621. together in church

  622. and that is a

  623. great time

  624. to remember

  625. how you talk

  626. to God

  627. all the time

  628. but more often

  629. than the 60

  630. seconds that Derek

  631. gave us this

  632. morning of silence

  633. in that prayer

  634. to say

  635. come up

  636. with a sin

  637. tell God

  638. something you

  639. need him for

  640. that should be

  641. every day

  642. and through the day

  643. we live in

  644. dependence upon

  645. him like that

  646. tell God

  647. specific reasons

  648. in our hearts

  649. and lives

  650. for which we

  651. need him

  652. that's repentance

  653. okay

  654. if you need

  655. a short definition

  656. it is turning

  657. from self

  658. sufficiency

  659. to Jesus

  660. sufficiency

  661. I'm not enough

  662. God

  663. I need you

  664. Jesus is what

  665. I need

  666. repentance

  667. is what Jesus

  668. was talking

  669. to God's people

  670. in his generation

  671. about

  672. when he referenced

  673. the sign

  674. of Jonah

  675. the crowds

  676. were increasing

  677. and Jesus

  678. began to say

  679. this generation

  680. is an evil

  681. generation

  682. it seeks

  683. for a sign

  684. but no sign

  685. will be given

  686. to it

  687. except the sign

  688. of Jonah

  689. for as Jonah

  690. became a sign

  691. to the people

  692. of Nineveh

  693. so will the

  694. son of man

  695. be to this

  696. generation

  697. it's one of a

  698. couple places

  699. where Jesus

  700. speaks of the

  701. sign of Jonah

  702. and there's a lot

  703. of discussion

  704. of what he's

  705. talking about

  706. but what's

  707. really clear

  708. here is that

  709. it's Jonah

  710. himself

  711. who became

  712. a sign

  713. to the people

  714. of Nineveh

  715. Jonah didn't

  716. perform a sign

  717. he himself

  718. was the sign

  719. so what

  720. was Jonah

  721. a sign

  722. of

  723. might seem

  724. kind of hard

  725. to understand

  726. the point

  727. Matthew's account

  728. helps us a little

  729. as he talks

  730. about the sign

  731. of Jonah

  732. involving

  733. being in

  734. the belly

  735. of the whale

  736. the sign

  737. of Jonah

  738. his personal

  739. life story

  740. what did it

  741. show them

  742. it showed

  743. the Ninevites

  744. their need

  745. for repentance

  746. and rescue

  747. didn't it

  748. it showed

  749. them that

  750. running

  751. from Yahweh

  752. was serious

  753. and dangerous

  754. no other

  755. gods who

  756. when you run

  757. the other way

  758. you end up

  759. in the belly

  760. of a whale

  761. and also

  762. what

  763. had they ever

  764. met anybody

  765. who'd spent

  766. three days

  767. and nights

  768. in a whale

  769. it was a sign

  770. that there was

  771. hope for life

  772. even at the

  773. very doors

  774. of death

  775. that they could

  776. that they could

  777. repent and cry

  778. out and he

  779. would hear

  780. them

  781. it was amazing

  782. I don't know

  783. if they'd seen

  784. him vomited

  785. up or they'd

  786. heard it from

  787. somebody who

  788. did

  789. but this Jonah

  790. who was surely

  791. going to die

  792. all of a sudden

  793. here he is

  794. standing before

  795. us

  796. even with

  797. judgment looming

  798. in 40 days

  799. perhaps there's

  800. hope in turning

  801. to God

  802. perhaps he would

  803. spare them

  804. as he spared

  805. Jonah

  806. and he did

  807. God's heart

  808. is like that

  809. he's so eager

  810. to forgive

  811. he's so full

  812. of mercy

  813. already here

  814. in Jonah's

  815. day

  816. for even

  817. the worst

  818. sinners in

  819. the world

  820. who repents

  821. y'all how much

  822. more so is that

  823. true

  824. now

  825. that Jesus

  826. the one

  827. greater

  828. than Jonah

  829. has

  830. come

  831. he is

  832. here

  833. he has

  834. not only

  835. come

  836. he has not

  837. only gone

  838. to this earth

  839. and to things

  840. like a whale

  841. he has

  842. gone to

  843. death

  844. and risen

  845. conquering

  846. sin

  847. and death

  848. once and for

  849. all

  850. how eager

  851. should we

  852. be to

  853. repent

  854. to that

  855. kind of

  856. life-giving

  857. God

  858. how eager

  859. should we

  860. be to

  861. call others

  862. to repent

  863. and find

  864. mercy

  865. with this

  866. God

  867. well Jonah

  868. gets to do it

  869. he leads a

  870. revival in

  871. Nineveh

  872. it's pretty

  873. amazing

  874. right

  875. if you're

  876. if you're

  877. a prophet

  878. what could

  879. be better

  880. than this

  881. preacher

  882. of the

  883. year

  884. Jonah

  885. and that's

  886. the end

  887. of the story

  888. most of us

  889. think

  890. right

  891. let's end

  892. on a

  893. high

  894. note

  895. celebration

  896. repentance

  897. forgiveness

  898. everyone's

  899. happy

  900. certainly

  901. well

  902. except

  903. one guy

  904. chapter 4

  905. gets at

  906. the heart

  907. of the book

  908. it shows

  909. God's

  910. merciful

  911. heart

  912. even more

  913. beautifully

  914. than so far

  915. because it

  916. turns out

  917. that God

  918. is still

  919. chasing

  920. runaway

  921. Jonah

  922. in fact

  923. he's a

  924. harder

  925. case

  926. than some

  927. pagan

  928. sailors

  929. or some

  930. wicked

  931. gentiles

  932. God's

  933. own

  934. prophet

  935. the one

  936. who sits

  937. in synagogue

  938. more than

  939. any of the rest

  940. of them

  941. he's the

  942. hard case

  943. but don't

  944. miss this

  945. the fact that

  946. there's a

  947. chapter 4

  948. if God

  949. cared

  950. only about

  951. the big

  952. show

  953. the big

  954. party

  955. saving

  956. Nineveh

  957. and he was

  958. just using

  959. Jonah to do

  960. something really

  961. cool

  962. then the

  963. story ends

  964. in chapter

  965. 3

  966. that's where

  967. it happens

  968. but even

  969. after Jonah

  970. has done

  971. great things

  972. for God

  973. God is

  974. not through

  975. with him

  976. he wants

  977. his heart

  978. doesn't he

  979. did you

  980. hear that

  981. long time

  982. church

  983. leader

  984. generous

  985. giver

  986. passionate

  987. evangelist

  988. God has

  989. a chapter

  990. 4

  991. where he

  992. cares more

  993. about who

  994. you are

  995. in your

  996. relationship

  997. with him

  998. than he

  999. does about

  1000. what you've

  1001. done

  1002. in your

  1003. religion

  1004. for him

  1005. he does

  1006. in your

  1007. life

  1008. he cares

  1009. more about

  1010. your relationship

  1011. with him

  1012. than he

  1013. does about

  1014. what you've

  1015. done

  1016. for him

  1017. he won't

  1018. settle for

  1019. your long

  1020. record of

  1021. religious

  1022. performance

  1023. he's coming

  1024. even today

  1025. perhaps

  1026. through this

  1027. word

  1028. for your

  1029. heart

  1030. Jonah's

  1031. heart

  1032. is once

  1033. again

  1034. in God's

  1035. crosshairs

  1036. God has

  1037. just saved

  1038. thousands

  1039. but he's

  1040. not overlooking

  1041. the one

  1042. is he

  1043. the one

  1044. who is

  1045. angry

  1046. angry

  1047. it

  1048. displeased

  1049. Jonah

  1050. exceedingly

  1051. he was

  1052. angry

  1053. and then

  1054. here's what

  1055. he says

  1056. oh Lord

  1057. is this

  1058. not what

  1059. I said

  1060. when I

  1061. was yet

  1062. in my

  1063. country

  1064. I knew

  1065. what you

  1066. were going

  1067. to do

  1068. that's

  1069. why I

  1070. made haste

  1071. to flee

  1072. to Tarshish

  1073. I knew

  1074. that you

  1075. were a

  1076. gracious

  1077. God

  1078. and merciful

  1079. slow

  1080. to anger

  1081. abounding

  1082. in steadfast

  1083. love

  1084. and relenting

  1085. from disaster

  1086. what a

  1087. beautiful

  1088. statement

  1089. of God's

  1090. character

  1091. that's a

  1092. biblical

  1093. statement

  1094. isn't it

  1095. Jonah

  1096. has read

  1097. his Bible

  1098. he's a

  1099. prophet

  1100. Jonah's

  1101. theology

  1102. is strong

  1103. Jonah

  1104. knew

  1105. God

  1106. was going

  1107. to forgive

  1108. Nineveh

  1109. and it

  1110. made him

  1111. angry

  1112. so God

  1113. says

  1114. Jonah

  1115. do you

  1116. do well

  1117. to be

  1118. angry

  1119. do you

  1120. see how

  1121. God's

  1122. giving Jonah

  1123. gently

  1124. a spiritual

  1125. heart

  1126. calf

  1127. it's a

  1128. model

  1129. for you

  1130. to use

  1131. on yourself

  1132. if you'd

  1133. like

  1134. this morning

  1135. should you

  1136. be angry

  1137. at the

  1138. blessing

  1139. in the

  1140. life

  1141. of the

  1142. one

  1143. who

  1144. hurt

  1145. you

  1146. should

  1147. you

  1148. remain

  1149. callous

  1150. in

  1151. unforgiveness

  1152. should

  1153. you

  1154. care

  1155. more

  1156. about

  1157. your

  1158. own

  1159. temporal

  1160. life

  1161. than

  1162. others

  1163. eternal

  1164. life

  1165. then in

  1166. pursuit

  1167. of

  1168. Jonah's

  1169. heart

  1170. God

  1171. sends

  1172. a

  1173. plant

  1174. to

  1175. grow

  1176. up

  1177. and

  1178. give

  1179. Jonah

  1180. shade

  1181. while

  1182. he

  1183. sits

  1184. under

  1185. the

  1186. Middle

  1187. Eastern

  1188. sun

  1189. overlooking

  1190. Nineveh

  1191. and then

  1192. he sends

  1193. a worm

  1194. to take

  1195. it away

  1196. and Jonah

  1197. is guess

  1198. what

  1199. angry

  1200. again

  1201. and God

  1202. uses this

  1203. not to

  1204. make fun

  1205. of him

  1206. God's

  1207. after his

  1208. heart

  1209. God asks

  1210. Jonah

  1211. do you

  1212. do well

  1213. to be

  1214. angry

  1215. and Jonah

  1216. says

  1217. what

  1218. yes

  1219. yes

  1220. I

  1221. do

  1222. but God

  1223. says

  1224. this is the

  1225. end of the

  1226. story

  1227. you

  1228. you pity

  1229. the plant

  1230. for which

  1231. you did

  1232. not labor

  1233. nor did

  1234. you make

  1235. it grow

  1236. which came

  1237. into being

  1238. in a night

  1239. and perished

  1240. in a night

  1241. now he's

  1242. going to

  1243. contrast

  1244. that

  1245. should

  1246. not I

  1247. pity

  1248. Nineveh

  1249. that great

  1250. city

  1251. which God

  1252. has labored

  1253. for

  1254. which he

  1255. has created

  1256. which he

  1257. has called

  1258. into being

  1259. in which

  1260. there are

  1261. more than

  1262. 120,000

  1263. persons

  1264. made in

  1265. his image

  1266. who do

  1267. not know

  1268. their right

  1269. hand

  1270. from their

  1271. left

  1272. and their

  1273. wickedness

  1274. and also

  1275. much

  1276. cattle

  1277. look at

  1278. my heart

  1279. God says

  1280. there are

  1281. people there

  1282. they're lost

  1283. they're confused

  1284. they're hopeless

  1285. Jonah these

  1286. are the kinds

  1287. of people

  1288. I love

  1289. the people

  1290. like you

  1291. Jonah

  1292. who care

  1293. more about

  1294. a plant

  1295. than about

  1296. people

  1297. who care

  1298. more about

  1299. shade

  1300. than souls

  1301. I want

  1302. you

  1303. Jonah

  1304. to share

  1305. my heart

  1306. for them

  1307. and we

  1308. don't get

  1309. to hear

  1310. how Jonah

  1311. responds

  1312. I think

  1313. probably

  1314. because in

  1315. God's

  1316. merciful

  1317. pursuit

  1318. of Jonah's

  1319. heart

  1320. he's actually

  1321. after even

  1322. more

  1323. than that

  1324. because this

  1325. story

  1326. is in the

  1327. word of

  1328. God

  1329. it's written

  1330. for God's

  1331. people

  1332. Israel

  1333. right

  1334. this is

  1335. their

  1336. prophet

  1337. reflecting

  1338. their heart

  1339. he's sharing

  1340. his own

  1341. story with

  1342. them

  1343. so that

  1344. they are

  1345. pressed

  1346. to answer

  1347. the questions

  1348. do you

  1349. do well

  1350. to be

  1351. angry

  1352. are you

  1353. being the

  1354. light to

  1355. the nations

  1356. that I

  1357. called you

  1358. to be

  1359. as my

  1360. special

  1361. people

  1362. have you

  1363. left

  1364. your first

  1365. love

  1366. forgotten

  1367. the merciful

  1368. heart

  1369. of God

  1370. to forgive

  1371. it's a

  1372. chance

  1373. for him

  1374. to say

  1375. look

  1376. Israel

  1377. how long

  1378. and wide

  1379. and high

  1380. and deep

  1381. is the

  1382. love

  1383. of God

  1384. the God

  1385. who goes

  1386. to such

  1387. great lengths

  1388. for Jonah

  1389. doesn't stop

  1390. with a storm

  1391. and a whale

  1392. and a plant

  1393. and a worm

  1394. he sends

  1395. his son

  1396. for runaway

  1397. prophets

  1398. for all

  1399. his people

  1400. so that we

  1401. today

  1402. can know

  1403. that there

  1404. is hope

  1405. for us

  1406. even if

  1407. our spiritual

  1408. heart

  1409. cath

  1410. is not

  1411. going well

  1412. this morning

  1413. even if

  1414. you are

  1415. sure

  1416. that you're

  1417. failing

  1418. the exam

  1419. because you

  1420. are seeing

  1421. the one

  1422. who passed

  1423. it

  1424. who came

  1425. full

  1426. of grace

  1427. and truth

  1428. who forgave

  1429. even his

  1430. enemies

  1431. who killed

  1432. him

  1433. who perfectly

  1434. shared the

  1435. heart of God

  1436. overflowing

  1437. with mercy

  1438. all the way

  1439. to the cross

  1440. see it's our

  1441. God

  1442. the hero

  1443. of all of

  1444. these stories

  1445. he's a

  1446. God who

  1447. rescues

  1448. and restores

  1449. specifically

  1450. here

  1451. a God

  1452. who runs

  1453. after

  1454. runaways

  1455. runaways

  1456. of all sorts

  1457. the pagans

  1458. and the

  1459. prophets

  1460. the godless

  1461. and the

  1462. godly

  1463. no matter

  1464. how you're

  1465. running away

  1466. he wants you

  1467. to know

  1468. this morning

  1469. what the

  1470. runaway

  1471. bunny learned

  1472. that no

  1473. matter what

  1474. you may

  1475. become

  1476. no matter

  1477. where you

  1478. think you

  1479. may go

  1480. to find

  1481. life

  1482. no matter

  1483. how you'll

  1484. need to

  1485. reinvent

  1486. yourself

  1487. life will

  1488. always be

  1489. where he

  1490. catches you

  1491. in his

  1492. arms

  1493. and hugs

  1494. you

  1495. shucks

  1496. said the

  1497. little bunny

  1498. I guess

  1499. I might

  1500. just as well

  1501. stay where

  1502. I am

  1503. and be

  1504. your

  1505. little

  1506. bunny

  1507. and when

  1508. you start

  1509. to realize

  1510. that

  1511. let's put

  1512. it in

  1513. better

  1514. terms

  1515. for us

  1516. when

  1517. you start

  1518. to realize

  1519. there's

  1520. life

  1521. in his

  1522. love

  1523. for me

  1524. it's

  1525. where my

  1526. joy

  1527. is found

  1528. it's

  1529. where my

  1530. purpose

  1531. is found

  1532. it's

  1533. where my

  1534. hope

  1535. is found

  1536. that starts

  1537. to change

  1538. your heart

  1539. it

  1540. then sends

  1541. you

  1542. you will

  1543. go anywhere

  1544. at all

  1545. you'll go

  1546. to anyone

  1547. at all

  1548. to tell

  1549. them about

  1550. the home

  1551. where life

  1552. is found

  1553. won't you

  1554. to show

  1555. them the

  1556. forgiveness

  1557. that you've

  1558. received

  1559. to point

  1560. them to

  1561. the God

  1562. who runs

  1563. faster

  1564. after

  1565. runaways

  1566. that's what

  1567. will happen

  1568. in your

  1569. life

  1570. years ago

  1571. a friend

  1572. of mine

  1573. was at

  1574. the beach

  1575. with his

  1576. family

  1577. and as

  1578. they were

  1579. down near

  1580. the water

  1581. he realized

  1582. he'd forgotten

  1583. something

  1584. and went

  1585. back to

  1586. his car

  1587. to drive

  1588. off and get

  1589. it while

  1590. his family

  1591. stayed at

  1592. the beach

  1593. unbeknownst

  1594. to him

  1595. his

  1596. three-year-old

  1597. son decided

  1598. he wanted

  1599. to go

  1600. with dad

  1601. and so

  1602. he began

  1603. running

  1604. towards

  1605. the highway

  1606. the child's

  1607. mother noticed

  1608. started yelling

  1609. after him

  1610. to come

  1611. back

  1612. but this

  1613. was a fast

  1614. three-year-old

  1615. who was at

  1616. his fastest

  1617. when

  1618. when running

  1619. away from

  1620. a parent

  1621. you've

  1622. experienced

  1623. that

  1624. he sped

  1625. up

  1626. speeding

  1627. toward the

  1628. highway

  1629. and the

  1630. speeding

  1631. vehicles

  1632. there

  1633. the boy

  1634. got right

  1635. near

  1636. certain

  1637. harm

  1638. but

  1639. thankfully

  1640. as fast

  1641. as he

  1642. could run

  1643. his mom

  1644. ran

  1645. faster

  1646. she understood

  1647. the danger

  1648. that he

  1649. failed to

  1650. appreciate

  1651. she rushed

  1652. after him

  1653. she ran

  1654. barefoot

  1655. across the

  1656. rocky ground

  1657. leading up

  1658. to the

  1659. highway

  1660. caused

  1661. herself

  1662. no small

  1663. pain

  1664. to wrap

  1665. her arms

  1666. around her

  1667. son

  1668. and keep

  1669. him alive

  1670. and so

  1671. has your

  1672. savior

  1673. done for

  1674. you

  1675. because

  1676. he delights

  1677. to forgive

  1678. because

  1679. he is

  1680. rich

  1681. in mercy

  1682. because

  1683. of the

  1684. great

  1685. love

  1686. with which

  1687. he loves

  1688. you

  1689. love

  1690. love

  1691. that

  1692. that

  1693. couldn't

  1694. be

  1695. contained

  1696. by

  1697. by

  1698. skies

  1699. or

  1700. oceans

  1701. love

  1702. that

  1703. overflowed

  1704. from his

  1705. heart

  1706. as he

  1707. gave

  1708. his

  1709. very

  1710. life

  1711. in order

  1712. to preserve

  1713. yours

  1714. so

  1715. what

  1716. he was

  1717. explaining

  1718. to his

  1719. disciples

  1720. the night

  1721. that he

  1722. was

  1723. betrayed

  1724. the night

  1725. before

  1726. the cross

  1727. when he

  1728. took bread

  1729. and broke

  1730. it

  1731. and he

  1732. gave it

  1733. to them

  1734. as I'm

  1735. ministering

  1736. in his

  1737. name

  1738. give this

  1739. bread

  1740. to you

  1741. and he

  1742. said

  1743. take

  1744. eat

  1745. this is

  1746. my

  1747. body

  1748. given

  1749. for you

  1750. do this

  1751. in remembrance

  1752. of me

  1753. and in the

  1754. same way

  1755. he took

  1756. the cup

  1757. and said

  1758. this cup

  1759. is the

  1760. new

  1761. covenant

  1762. in my

  1763. blood

  1764. shed

  1765. for many

  1766. for the

  1767. forgiveness

  1768. of sins

  1769. drink

  1770. from it

  1771. all of

  1772. you

  1773. for as

  1774. often

  1775. as you

  1776. eat

  1777. this

  1778. bread

  1779. and drink

  1780. this

  1781. cup

  1782. you

  1783. proclaim

  1784. the

  1785. Lord's

  1786. death

  1787. until

  1788. he

  1789. comes

  1790. if

  1791. you

  1792. are a

  1793. runaway

  1794. who

  1795. has

  1796. repented

  1797. who

  1798. repents

  1799. even

  1800. today

  1801. of looking

  1802. for life

  1803. anywhere

  1804. apart

  1805. from

  1806. God

  1807. who's

  1808. a

  1809. baptized

  1810. member

  1811. of

  1812. any

  1813. church

  1814. that

  1815. preaches

  1816. Jesus

  1817. as the

  1818. savior

  1819. of

  1820. sinners

  1821. then

  1822. come

  1823. and

  1824. eat

  1825. with

  1826. us

  1827. and

  1828. with

  1829. him

  1830. if

  1831. you're

  1832. not

  1833. sure

  1834. what

  1835. to

  1836. believe

  1837. about

  1838. Jesus

  1839. or

  1840. if

  1841. you're

  1842. sure

  1843. that

  1844. you

  1845. don't

  1846. believe

  1847. in

  1848. Jesus

  1849. I've

  1850. actually

  1851. got

  1852. good

  1853. news

  1854. for

  1855. you

  1856. he

  1857. is

  1858. even

  1859. more

  1860. merciful

  1861. and

  1862. loving

  1863. than

  1864. you

  1865. can

  1866. imagine

  1867. even

  1868. more

  1869. merciful

  1870. and

  1871. loving

  1872. than

  1873. any

  1874. of

  1875. his

  1876. people

  1877. that

  1878. you've

  1879. met

  1880. if

  1881. you

  1882. meet

  1883. him

  1884. his

  1885. love

  1886. for

  1887. you

  1888. his

  1889. death

  1890. on

  1891. the

  1892. cross

  1893. means

  1894. that

  1895. you

  1896. can

  1897. run

  1898. back

  1899. to

  1900. him

  1901. right

  1902. now

  1903. without

  1904. having

  1905. to

  1906. get

  1907. yourself

  1908. cleaned

  1909. up

  1910. first

  1911. without

  1912. having

  1913. to

  1914. make

  1915. up

  1916. for

  1917. your

  1918. past

  1919. performance

  1920. you

  1921. can

  1922. just

  1923. run

  1924. back

  1925. to

  1926. him

  1927. don't

  1928. come

  1929. to

  1930. these

  1931. elements

  1932. this

  1933. morning

  1934. that are

  1935. a sign

  1936. that point

  1937. to him

  1938. when you

  1939. can actually

  1940. let them

  1941. point you

  1942. to his

  1943. boundless

  1944. love

  1945. for people

  1946. like us

  1947. the kind

  1948. of love

  1949. that those

  1950. of us

  1951. who know

  1952. him

  1953. and believe

  1954. in him

  1955. need

  1956. and are

  1957. called

  1958. to share

  1959. see his

  1960. love

  1961. trust his

  1962. love

  1963. come and

  1964. meet him

  1965. let me pray

  1966. Jesus

  1967. we ask

  1968. that

  1969. that

  1970. you

  1971. would

  1972. overwhelm

  1973. every

  1974. single

  1975. one

  1976. of us

  1977. with

  1978. your

  1979. love

  1980. your

  1981. mercy

  1982. your

  1983. kindness

  1984. your

  1985. grace

  1986. we

  1987. come

  1988. easily

  1989. being

  1990. able

  1991. to

  1992. name

  1993. our

  1994. sin

  1995. there's

  1996. so

  1997. many

  1998. examples

  1999. and

  2000. yet

  2001. you

  2002. tell us

  2003. where

  2004. sin

  2005. increases

  2006. your

  2007. grace

  2008. increases

  2009. all

  2010. the

  2011. more

  2012. you

  2013. you

  2014. know

  2015. it's

  2016. no

  2017. match

  2018. for

  2019. you

  2020. and

  2021. you've

  2022. come

  2023. to

  2024. be

  2025. with

  2026. us

  2027. and

  2028. remind

  2029. us

  2030. that

  2031. no

  2032. matter

  2033. where

  2034. we

  2035. go

  2036. you'll

  2037. always

  2038. scoop

  2039. us

  2040. up

  2041. in

  2042. your

  2043. arms

  2044. and

  2045. love

  2046. us

  2047. and

  2048. so

  2049. as

  2050. we

  2051. take

  2052. bread

  2053. and

  2054. wine

  2055. would

  2056. you

  2057. use

  2058. them

  2059. for

  2060. something

  2061. so

  2062. much

  2063. deeper

  2064. in

  2065. our

  2066. hearts

  2067. that

  2068. we

  2069. might

  2070. trust

  2071. you

  2072. and

  2073. run

  2074. back

  2075. to

  2076. you

  2077. even

  2078. today

  2079. we

  2080. ask

  2081. it
