  1. You are listening to a message from Southwood Presbyterian Church in Huntsville, Alabama.

  2. ! Our passion is to experience and express grace. Join us.

  3. There was once a congregation of God's people that saw the power and the glory of God at work among them marvelously.

  4. They sang praises to His greatness.

  5. They regularly gathered together and heard His law read to them.

  6. They were led by men called by God.

  7. They talked often of God's truth.

  8. They received God's provision enough to make budget 40 years in a row.

  9. It was like manna falling from heaven or something.

  10. And yet, neither the leader nor most of the people made it where God was taking them.

  11. They started out fast with God, excited.

  12. But they didn't finish well.

  13. Sometimes churches and Christians start out with a bang, like a firecracker, looking and sounding so good,

  14. but only to fade just as impressively and quickly.

  15. And I think this is a particular concern in a culture where our attention spans are shrinking.

  16. Flashy experiences are often needed to keep our commitment to anything or anyone.

  17. We get bored, don't we?

  18. Dissatisfied very quickly.

  19. I bet every one of us has at home some project that we've started.

  20. Maybe we got really close, but we never quite finished.

  21. The writer to the Hebrews, who has been pointing us to the greatness of Jesus over and over,

  22. he wants to ensure the churches that he's writing to endure, persevere, finish as well as they started with God,

  23. even when life is tough.

  24. And so, in chapter 3, he's going to do two things.

  25. He's going to compare Jesus and Moses, and then he's going to give God's people a warning from their history,

  26. the history of God's people in the Exodus generation that I just recounted for us a little bit.

  27. Warning, he says.

  28. This could happen to you, to y'all, to us.

  29. Listen as I read to what he's warning against.

  30. Listen for that.

  31. And to how he tells us to guard against it.

  32. Hebrews chapter 3.

    Hebrews 3 chapter mention

  33. The whole thing.

  34. Therefore, holy brothers, you who share in a heavenly calling,

  35. consider Jesus, the apostle and high priest of our confession,

  36. who was faithful to him who appointed him,

  37. just as Moses also was faithful in all God's house.

  38. For Jesus has been counted worthy of more glory than Moses,

  39. as much more glory as the builder of a house has more honor than the house itself.

  40. For every house is built by someone, but the builder of all things is God.

  41. Now, Moses was faithful in all God's house as a servant,

  42. to testify to the things that were to be spoken later,

  43. but Christ is faithful over God's house as a son,

  44. and we are his house,

  45. if indeed we hold fast our confidence and our boasting and our hope.

  46. Therefore, as the Holy Spirit says,

  47. today, if you hear his voice,

  48. do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion on the day of testing in the wilderness,

  49. where your fathers put me to the test and saw my works for 40 years.

  50. Therefore, I was provoked with that generation and said,

  51. they always go astray in their heart.

  52. They have not known my ways.

  53. As I swore in my wrath, they shall not enter my rest.

  54. Take care, brothers,

  55. lest there be in any of you an evil, unbelieving heart,

  56. leading you to fall away from the living God.

  57. But exhort one another every day,

  58. as long as it is called today,

  59. that none of you may be hardened by sin's deceitfulness.

  60. For we share in Christ,

  61. if indeed we hold our original confidence firm to the end.

  62. As it is said,

  63. today, if you hear his voice,

  64. do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion.

  65. For who were those who heard and yet rebelled?

  66. Was it not all those who left Egypt, led by Moses?

  67. And with whom was it that he was provoked for 40 years?

  68. Was it not those who sinned, whose bodies fell in the wilderness?

  69. And to whom did he swear that they would not enter his rest,

  70. but to those who were disobedient?

  71. So we see that they were unable to enter because of unbelief.

  72. Thus far, God's holy word.

  73. Let's pray.

  74. God, these are challenging words for our hearts.

  75. They are your words.

  76. And so, by Holy Spirit, as you say here,

  77. would you speak to us?

  78. Would you give us ears to hear?

  79. Would you soften our hearts?

  80. In Jesus' name, amen.

  81. Amen.

  82. It might be a compliment

  83. to be told that you have rock-hard abs or biceps.

  84. I wouldn't know, but I think it would be.

  85. But you don't want to hear the doctor say,

  86. you have a hard heart.

  87. That is a problem physically.

  88. And as this passage says, spiritually.

  89. The preacher here is not telling the people

  90. that they have hard hearts,

  91. but he is warning them about the danger of that diagnosis,

  92. showing them that it's a problem

  93. that no one plans to have.

  94. I'm going to have a hard heart.

  95. No.

  96. Yet it still happens.

  97. So beware.

  98. That spiritual sickness, hard heartedness,

  99. is mentioned several times in this passage.

  100. So I want us to see what that dangerous condition involves,

  101. and then where it leads,

  102. and how to prevent it.

  103. First, we'll start with what a hard-hearted diagnosis involves.

  104. It starts with the hardening being against God.

  105. Notice the writer to the Hebrews turns to Psalm 95.

  106. That's where this big quotation is from,

  107. starting at verse 7.

  108. That's a psalm that these Jewish Christians he's writing to

  109. would have been very familiar with.

  110. They would have heard it nearly every week of their lives

  111. as they came to Sabbath worship.

  112. We began our service with it this morning.

  113. You know, come, let us worship and bow down.

  114. Let us kneel before the Lord, our Maker.

  115. It's a reminder of the God that we worship.

  116. And then there's a command.

  117. Today, over and over.

  118. Today, if you hear his voice,

  119. don't harden your hearts.

  120. Don't put him to the test.

  121. Our hearts go astray

  122. when they get distant from God's ways.

  123. Verse 10.

  124. We start to listen to man's voices

  125. telling us where life is found

  126. rather than God's.

  127. Like the Israelites that we read about earlier, right?

  128. Quarreling about the water.

  129. Grumbling about their leaders.

  130. We're not even sure anymore that God is really among us.

  131. Is he really here?

  132. Can we really trust him?

  133. We so need that regular reminder, don't we?

  134. See, I marched out of Egypt with God,

  135. but now I'm thinking Egypt might have been better.

  136. Amazing, right?

  137. These people watched the plagues.

  138. They survived the Passover.

  139. They walked through the Red Sea on dry ground.

  140. And they're wondering now about whether God or Pharaoh

  141. would be a better provider for them.

  142. Wow.

  143. Y'all, that's the deceitfulness of sin.

  144. That ought to get our attention.

  145. Verse 13 says,

  146. our hearts can be hardened

  147. by the deceitfulness of sin.

  148. They can become evil, unbelieving hearts.

  149. Not because we set out to be evil

  150. and do lots of bad stuff.

  151. But because sin deceives us.

  152. See, sin tells us what?

  153. Life is to be found somewhere else apart from God.

  154. Maybe not even far away.

  155. Maybe just right here to the side a little bit.

  156. And you get used to going to that place for life.

  157. It becomes normal and natural

  158. and your heart gets hard toward God.

  159. It doesn't look to Him for life anymore.

  160. Let me just give you some examples

  161. of the deceitfulness of sin.

  162. There are thousands.

  163. Just imagine you're really wanting to be friends

  164. with this girl at youth group.

  165. But she keeps making fun of this other girl.

  166. Talking bad about her and so,

  167. but you really want to be her friend,

  168. so you laugh along.

  169. Sometimes you even chime in

  170. with a little slight at the other girl.

  171. So that the cool girl likes being with you.

  172. And you're thinking,

  173. you know, no one's hurt.

  174. What's happened?

  175. I'm just getting a friend.

  176. But sin deceived you.

  177. You're actually destroying

  178. the possibility of safe friendship, aren't you?

  179. Of real gospel community.

  180. You'll never feel safe with that cool girl

  181. if you're laughing at others.

  182. Because how do you know

  183. that they're not laughing at you

  184. when you're not there?

  185. Frustrated with the intimacy

  186. in your own marriage?

  187. You turn to digital images

  188. on your screens.

  189. You tell yourself at first things like,

  190. I deserve this.

  191. I'm not hurting anyone.

  192. In fact, I'm avoiding arguments

  193. with my spouse.

  194. But sin deceived you.

  195. You're actually misusing

  196. another image bearer of God.

  197. And you're avoiding the opportunity

  198. for repentance

  199. and forgiveness

  200. and true love

  201. in your marriage.

  202. You're taking a cheap substitute

  203. that won't actually love you.

  204. You won't experience that.

  205. And soon you find

  206. you're both drifting

  207. from God

  208. and from one another.

  209. Maybe you're increasingly angry

  210. with other Christians

  211. for how they're responding

  212. to current events.

  213. Just hypothetically.

  214. You're so frustrated

  215. with how they're not loving people.

  216. They're not speaking out,

  217. but they're silently compromising.

  218. You're so angry

  219. that instead of growing together

  220. and leaning into that,

  221. you disconnect

  222. from church entirely.

  223. I don't need them.

  224. I've got Jesus.

  225. And they don't need me.

  226. But sin deceived you.

  227. You're actually abandoning

  228. brothers and sisters in need

  229. in your own church family

  230. while thinking you're helping

  231. those who are in need

  232. because you're not there with them

  233. where Jesus puts you.

  234. and you're setting yourself up

  235. in your own mind

  236. as the only one

  237. who knows what's best.

  238. You're isolating.

  239. That's not what Jesus

  240. made you for.

  241. See, sin deceives us.

  242. It promises us life

  243. apart from God,

  244. apart from His ways.

  245. I know better about my life, right?

  246. Who could know

  247. as well as I do

  248. what I need?

  249. And we start to ignore

  250. the conviction of sin

  251. the preaching of God's word,

  252. the brother or sister

  253. who wants to challenge us

  254. because our heart

  255. has grown hard.

  256. I mean, maybe we're not

  257. the worst guy in the world.

  258. We feel pretty decent

  259. about ourselves,

  260. but that's the problem.

  261. We've gotten satisfied

  262. with life on our own.

  263. Sin.

  264. Malcolm Muggeridge wrote about

  265. this deceptive settling

  266. in his autobiography.

  267. The saddest thing to me

  268. in looking back on my life

  269. has been to recall

  270. not so much the wickedness

  271. I have been involved in,

  272. the cruel and selfish

  273. and egotistic things

  274. I have done,

  275. the hurt I have inflicted

  276. on those I loved,

  277. although all that's painful enough.

  278. What hurts most

  279. is the preference

  280. I have so often shown

  281. for what is inferior,

  282. tenth rate,

  283. when the first rate

  284. was there for the having.

  285. Like a man who goes shopping

  286. and comes back

  287. with cardboard shoes

  288. when he might have had leather,

  289. with dried fruit

  290. when he might have had fresh,

  291. with processed cheese

  292. when he might have had cheddar,

  293. with paper flowers

  294. when the primroses were out.

  295. God was there.

  296. He said,

  297. life,

  298. joy,

  299. rest,

  300. peace,

  301. hope,

  302. love,

  303. but I thought

  304. I'd found a better way.

  305. The end of that road

  306. is getting hardened

  307. in unbelief.

  308. It's mentioned twice here

  309. the evil,

  310. unbelieving heart

  311. there in verse 12.

  312. That means it doesn't

  313. keep its singular focus

  314. on trust and hope

  315. in God.

  316. And then in verse 19,

  317. at the end of the day,

  318. the hard heart just

  319. doesn't believe

  320. in God

  321. anymore.

  322. A settled coldness

  323. and distance

  324. from God,

  325. from His Word,

  326. from His people,

  327. even when you're around them

  328. quite often.

  329. You're just impervious

  330. to them.

  331. You're shut off

  332. from them.

  333. You've slowly rubbed

  334. a callous on your heart,

  335. even in church,

  336. and you've kept rubbing it

  337. so you no longer feel

  338. conviction.

  339. You no longer feel

  340. a longing.

  341. You no longer feel

  342. anything.

  343. Listen,

  344. it's possible

  345. to hear and see God

  346. and still rebel

  347. in unbelief.

  348. To sit among His people

  349. and still reject

  350. His lordship

  351. in your life,

  352. His love

  353. for you

  354. to feel nothing.

  355. You started so well

  356. with God,

  357. but then sin deceived

  358. and your heart

  359. began to harden.

  360. It's a serious diagnosis.

  361. How serious

  362. is spiritual hard-heartedness?

  363. What's the prognosis

  364. for you

  365. if it takes you down?

  366. Take care.

  367. Watch out.

  368. Lest there be

  369. in any of you

  370. an evil,

  371. unbelieving heart

  372. leading you

  373. to fall away

  374. from the living God.

  375. No one wants that.

  376. Away from the God

  377. who made you

  378. to be with Him.

  379. Certainly,

  380. that wouldn't be me,

  381. right?

  382. Look where I am.

  383. I'm sitting in church.

  384. I've been in church

  385. my whole life.

  386. I know more theology

  387. than my pastor.

  388. I've led

  389. the fundraising campaign.

  390. We got that golden calf

  391. up in no time.

  392. Listen to the pastor's heart

  393. concerned for his people.

  394. Who was it

  395. that finished so poorly

  396. back then

  397. in the wilderness?

  398. Stuck in the wilderness

  399. 40 years,

  400. buried there.

  401. It was a whole generation,

  402. he says,

  403. of people

  404. who followed

  405. Moses' footsteps

  406. out of Egypt

  407. and across the Red Sea.

  408. They started

  409. so fast

  410. with God,

  411. it seemed.

  412. No one had ever seen

  413. the greatness of God

  414. the way they had.

  415. They are the ones

  416. who sinned,

  417. died in the wilderness,

  418. were disobedient.

  419. They didn't really believe.

  420. They showed it

  421. when God said,

  422. here,

  423. come in

  424. and take this land

  425. that I'm giving you.

  426. And they said,

  427. yeah,

  428. but there's giants.

  429. How?

  430. How?

  431. You know,

  432. Egypt might have been

  433. better than that.

  434. We know better than Yahweh

  435. what is best for us.

  436. Unbelief.

  437. Powerful,

  438. painful

  439. unbelief.

  440. The prognosis

  441. for the hard heart

  442. is it's unable

  443. to enter

  444. God's rest.

  445. Makes sense,

  446. doesn't it?

  447. If your heart

  448. is hardened against God

  449. looking for life

  450. somewhere else

  451. and anything else

  452. that you can find,

  453. you can't enjoy

  454. the rest

  455. that God offers

  456. only in Himself.

  457. There's no rest

  458. to relieve you.

  459. No heaven

  460. to look forward to.

  461. No promises

  462. to count on.

  463. No love

  464. to revel in.

  465. No peace

  466. to calm you.

  467. No God

  468. to hold you.

  469. Now that's dark,

  470. right?

  471. I mean,

  472. not a lot of

  473. cheer and chuckles

  474. from me today.

  475. Neither the pastor

  476. to the Hebrews

  477. nor this pastor

  478. wants to talk

  479. about that

  480. potential diagnosis

  481. and prognosis

  482. without telling you

  483. how to avoid it.

  484. What's the prescription?

  485. Are you ready for that?

  486. What do I do?

  487. I don't want to end up there.

  488. What's the prescription

  489. to prevent

  490. hard heartedness?

  491. Notice,

  492. good news,

  493. he's writing to those

  494. who haven't hardened yet,

  495. at least not beyond

  496. help or hope.

  497. He's warning them

  498. and he's encouraging them

  499. as a community.

  500. If you're hearing me,

  501. it's not too late.

  502. To keep your heart soft,

  503. first pill

  504. to take daily.

  505. Speak

  506. to one another's hearts.

  507. I want to look more closely

  508. at verses

  509. 12 and 13.

  510. take care,

  511. brothers and sisters,

  512. lest there be in any of you

  513. an evil,

  514. unbelieving heart

  515. leading you to fall away

  516. from the living God.

  517. But,

  518. instead of falling away

  519. from the living God

  520. with an unbelieving heart,

  521. what?

  522. What?

  523. But,

  524. exhort one another

  525. every day,

  526. as long as it is called today,

  527. that none of you

  528. may be hardened

  529. by the deceitfulness

  530. of sin.

  531. You notice there

  532. how many hearts

  533. you're supposed to be

  534. watching carefully,

  535. taking care,

  536. that you don't,

  537. how many of them?

  538. Is it just one?

  539. Is it just your own

  540. that you're responsible for?

  541. It's not,

  542. is it?

  543. It's all your brothers

  544. and sisters.

  545. Take care,

  546. lest in any of you

  547. so that none of you,

  548. you need to be watching out

  549. for all of them.

  550. It is your job

  551. to make sure

  552. the deceitfulness

  553. of sin

  554. does not harden you

  555. or anyone else

  556. in your family.

  557. Oh,

  558. pastor,

  559. I just wanted to take

  560. my pill at home

  561. every day

  562. and just carry on

  563. with my life.

  564. Nope,

  565. not an option.

  566. Exhort

  567. one another

  568. every day.

  569. It's that beautiful word

  570. parakaleo

  571. translated,

  572. you'll know it as

  573. counsel

  574. or encourage,

  575. exhort,

  576. help,

  577. comfort.

  578. Literally,

  579. it means

  580. call

  581. alongside.

  582. It means

  583. come beside

  584. a brother

  585. or sister

  586. and yell at them

  587. in love.

  588. like a heart

  589. massage.

  590. Soften

  591. their hearts

  592. to God.

  593. Don't let sin

  594. deceive them

  595. and harden them.

  596. See,

  597. it's a lot

  598. more than just

  599. hang out

  600. with one another.

  601. You know,

  602. play pickleball,

  603. read a book,

  604. shoot the breeze,

  605. tell jokes.

  606. No,

  607. speak to one

  608. another's hearts.

  609. What's going on there?

  610. In context,

  611. this is saying

  612. the practical,

  613. personal remedy

  614. that God gives

  615. against the deceitfulness

  616. of sin

  617. in your heart

  618. is brothers

  619. and sisters

  620. who make the truth

  621. of Jesus

  622. seem more beautiful

  623. than the lies

  624. of sin.

  625. That's God's remedy.

  626. That's the pill.

  627. Brothers and sisters

  628. who make the truth

  629. of Jesus

  630. seem more beautiful

  631. to you

  632. than the lies

  633. of sin.

  634. Sometimes that means

  635. calling you out

  636. on the lies of sin

  637. they see you believing.

  638. Sometimes that will mean

  639. sharing their own struggles

  640. and praying together.

  641. Sometimes that will mean

  642. coming alongside you

  643. and yelling

  644. the wonder

  645. and the worth

  646. of Jesus

  647. so loudly

  648. in your ear

  649. that it drowns out

  650. anything else

  651. that you may be

  652. listening to.

  653. I have so many

  654. of those in my life.

  655. I hope you do.

  656. So many.

  657. I'm so thankful.

  658. I think that God knew

  659. that I was going

  660. to need so much help

  661. to see the deceitfulness

  662. of my sin

  663. to see the worth

  664. of my Savior.

  665. He's given me

  666. so many

  667. many of you.

  668. I'll come back to that.

  669. Speak to

  670. one

  671. another.

  672. Let me just point out

  673. briefly

  674. no matter how

  675. spiritual you are

  676. this is

  677. part of the Bible

  678. that you can't obey.

  679. on your own

  680. by yourself.

  681. Even if you and God

  682. are having really

  683. great quiet times

  684. even if you have

  685. already read

  686. the entire Bible

  687. reading plan for the year

  688. and prayed all of the

  689. prayers in the booklets

  690. you can't do this.

  691. You actually have to have

  692. a grace group

  693. whether you call it

  694. that or not.

  695. You need other people.

  696. Listen,

  697. you are in

  698. rebellion against God

  699. disobedience

  700. to His Word

  701. if you aren't

  702. actively seeking

  703. people to speak

  704. into your heart

  705. while you speak

  706. into theirs.

  707. It's that serious.

  708. How often

  709. do we need to take

  710. this pill?

  711. Every day

  712. as long as it is

  713. called today

  714. until Jesus returns

  715. you never stop

  716. needing this.

  717. This is not some

  718. legalistic 24 hour

  719. period where you

  720. must speak

  721. to one another

  722. or else.

  723. Listen,

  724. if you miss

  725. the preventive

  726. medication once

  727. you're probably

  728. okay that night

  729. but never stop

  730. taking it regularly,

  731. right?

  732. That's the warning.

  733. Hardness

  734. will begin

  735. to develop.

  736. You know

  737. one of the things

  738. that means?

  739. It means

  740. that

  741. I am not

  742. able to do

  743. this for you.

  744. A sermon

  745. on Sunday

  746. and a quirky

  747. video on Wednesday

  748. that you skip

  749. over to remind

  750. you about the

  751. worth of Jesus

  752. that's not enough.

  753. You need to

  754. find your people.

  755. Find a grace

  756. group.

  757. Ask someone

  758. to yell

  759. alongside you.

  760. Offer to yell

  761. alongside them.

  762. Blame it on me

  763. if you need to

  764. if it's awkward.

  765. Blame it on

  766. Hebrews.

  767. But do it.

  768. I want to

  769. urge you to do it

  770. today.

  771. This afternoon.

  772. Today

  773. in the words

  774. of Hebrews

  775. reach out

  776. to at least

  777. one person.

  778. Can I just

  779. challenge each

  780. of you to do

  781. that?

  782. Reach out

  783. to one person

  784. or one group

  785. at a minimum

  786. and just say

  787. you do this

  788. for me.

  789. Thank you.

  790. Please don't

  791. stop.

  792. or I so

  793. need you

  794. to do this

  795. for me.

  796. Would you

  797. please

  798. would you

  799. please do

  800. this for me?

  801. Make a note

  802. somewhere right

  803. now so that you

  804. do it this

  805. afternoon that you

  806. reach out and

  807. say brother

  808. sister let me be

  809. your shelter.

  810. Let me shine

  811. light into your

  812. life.

  813. Some of you are

  814. texting right now

  815. that's not what

  816. I said.

  817. God sees you

  818. this afternoon

  819. do that.

  820. That's a big

  821. part of the

  822. prescription here.

  823. Speak to one

  824. another.

  825. But it's not

  826. just to be

  827. talkative.

  828. Remember it's

  829. to our hearts.

  830. So what is it

  831. that we're saying?

  832. What are we

  833. speaking about?

  834. We speak to

  835. one another

  836. so that we

  837. listen ultimately

  838. to God's

  839. voice.

  840. That's the one

  841. we need to

  842. hear right?

  843. Twice the

  844. preacher quotes

  845. that line from

  846. Psalm 95.

  847. He's really

  848. focused on that

  849. first part.

  850. Today if you

  851. hear his

  852. voice do

  853. not harden

  854. your hearts.

  855. Stay soft.

  856. Stay warm

  857. to what God

  858. says.

  859. Even if it

  860. challenges you

  861. especially if it

  862. challenges you

  863. keep sitting

  864. under God's

  865. word.

  866. You don't know

  867. what to say

  868. to your friend

  869. when you reach

  870. out, when you

  871. speak to them

  872. one day.

  873. Share something

  874. you read in

  875. your Bible

  876. reading.

  877. Even copy

  878. and paste it.

  879. Anything that

  880. helped you see

  881. your need for

  882. Jesus and his

  883. graciously meeting

  884. your need.

  885. Just share it

  886. with them.

  887. Look at verse

  888. seven.

  889. As the Holy

  890. Spirit says,

  891. interesting way to

  892. quote scripture

  893. isn't it?

  894. As the Holy

  895. Spirit says,

  896. God speaks to

  897. us in his

  898. word.

  899. Doesn't he?

  900. Notice just

  901. for a minute

  902. that this

  903. really neat

  904. dynamic that's

  905. going on.

  906. This is God

  907. the Holy Spirit

  908. speaking in

  909. Psalm 95

  910. to speak to

  911. God's people

  912. then about

  913. something that

  914. happened several

  915. hundred years

  916. before that they

  917. need to heed the

  918. warning of and

  919. learn from.

  920. You see what's

  921. happening there?

  922. Learn from them

  923. the Holy Spirit

  924. says.

  925. And then the

  926. writer to the

  927. Hebrews takes

  928. Psalm 95

  929. several hundred

  930. years after that

  931. and says,

  932. look back to

  933. that.

  934. God's still

  935. speaking.

  936. Listen again

  937. to him.

  938. And here we

  939. are now gathered

  940. several hundred

  941. years later

  942. looking back to

  943. the writer writing

  944. to the Hebrews

  945. and saying,

  946. listen to what

  947. he says.

  948. God is speaking.

  949. The Holy Spirit

  950. speaks to you

  951. today and says,

  952. don't miss this.

  953. If you hear his

  954. voice, don't

  955. harden your

  956. heart.

  957. God still speaks

  958. by his spirit

  959. through his word.

  960. You can count

  961. on it.

  962. Today, today,

  963. if you hear his

  964. voice, listen up.

  965. Don't turn away.

  966. Keep listening.

  967. So that ultimately

  968. you hold fast

  969. to Jesus.

  970. Did you remember

  971. that's where this

  972. whole passage

  973. started?

  974. Some of you were

  975. wondering if I was

  976. going to make it

  977. back to that.

  978. Verse 1.

  979. Consider

  980. Jesus.

  981. Fix

  982. your thoughts

  983. on Jesus

  984. is what it

  985. means.

  986. He is the one

  987. that you most

  988. need to help

  989. you endure.

  990. See,

  991. the Israelites

  992. who wandered

  993. in the wilderness,

  994. who failed to

  995. finish well,

  996. they had a good

  997. leader,

  998. didn't they?

  999. Moses was

  1000. indeed the epitome

  1001. of greatness

  1002. for the Jews

  1003. and sure enough,

  1004. he was faithful

  1005. to God.

  1006. This is not

  1007. ripping on Moses

  1008. here.

  1009. God sent Moses

  1010. to deliver his

  1011. message to his

  1012. people and then

  1013. to deliver his

  1014. people from

  1015. bondage.

  1016. He represented

  1017. God to the

  1018. people and then

  1019. he represented

  1020. the people to

  1021. God when he

  1022. pled for God

  1023. to show mercy

  1024. on them.

  1025. What an

  1026. amazing,

  1027. incredible guy.

  1028. But just like

  1029. he did with

  1030. the angels

  1031. in chapter 2,

  1032. the writer here

  1033. is giving a

  1034. warning saying,

  1035. if the people

  1036. following Moses

  1037. fell away

  1038. and missed out

  1039. on something

  1040. good,

  1041. how much

  1042. more will

  1043. people following

  1044. Jesus who

  1045. fall away from

  1046. him miss out

  1047. on something

  1048. good?

  1049. See,

  1050. while Moses

  1051. is a servant,

  1052. he says,

  1053. of God,

  1054. Jesus is the

  1055. son of God.

  1056. Moses,

  1057. you're outranked.

  1058. While Moses

  1059. is a part of

  1060. God's house,

  1061. Jesus builds

  1062. the house.

  1063. Moses,

  1064. you're outdone.

  1065. Jesus is the

  1066. apostle of our

  1067. confession,

  1068. the one we

  1069. affirm as sent

  1070. by God from

  1071. heaven to dwell

  1072. with us.

  1073. The prophet

  1074. like Moses,

  1075. but even greater

  1076. than Moses.

  1077. Jesus is also

  1078. the high priest

  1079. of our

  1080. confession,

  1081. the one who

  1082. represents us

  1083. before God

  1084. by making the

  1085. ultimate sacrifice,

  1086. right?

  1087. So that no one

  1088. in him,

  1089. no one following

  1090. Jesus,

  1091. no one in his

  1092. family ever

  1093. fails to make

  1094. it home.

  1095. So glory to

  1096. Jesus,

  1097. right?

  1098. Glory and glory

  1099. and more glory

  1100. because he

  1101. brings us

  1102. home.

  1103. See,

  1104. we're really

  1105. close to

  1106. Jesus.

  1107. We are his

  1108. brothers and

  1109. sisters,

  1110. it says.

  1111. Isn't that

  1112. beautiful?

  1113. That reminder

  1114. to you right

  1115. as he's

  1116. warning you.

  1117. We are in

  1118. the second

  1119. analogy,

  1120. we are God's

  1121. house,

  1122. which is why

  1123. every single

  1124. brick,

  1125. every one of

  1126. us is needed.

  1127. We must cling

  1128. to one another,

  1129. let no one fall

  1130. away because God

  1131. lives here.

  1132. Wow,

  1133. what an amazing

  1134. thing we're a

  1135. part of.

  1136. And then he

  1137. says,

  1138. we share in

  1139. Christ as

  1140. long as we

  1141. hold fast our

  1142. confidence to

  1143. the end.

  1144. Is that what

  1145. he's saying?

  1146. As long as our

  1147. grip is strong

  1148. enough, is that

  1149. what will do

  1150. it?

  1151. No.

  1152. He talks about

  1153. our confidence

  1154. in Jesus.

  1155. Our boasting

  1156. and our hope

  1157. is Jesus.

  1158. He indeed

  1159. enables us to

  1160. endure and

  1161. to finish

  1162. what we

  1163. started with

  1164. him.

  1165. Isn't this

  1166. amazing that

  1167. we're not

  1168. actually on

  1169. our own?

  1170. We have a

  1171. share, a

  1172. stake in

  1173. Christ, the

  1174. enduring one.

  1175. We're in

  1176. him.

  1177. I want to

  1178. show you as

  1179. we close a

  1180. clip from

  1181. the 1992

  1182. Olympics.

  1183. I suspect

  1184. many of you

  1185. will have

  1186. seen it.

  1187. One of the

  1188. great moments

  1189. in Olympic

  1190. history,

  1191. British

  1192. sprinter

  1193. Derek

  1194. Redmond

  1195. was really

  1196. fast.

  1197. He ran

  1198. away with

  1199. his first

  1200. heat in

  1201. the 400

  1202. meters.

  1203. This you're

  1204. about to

  1205. see is his

  1206. semifinal heat

  1207. and I'm

  1208. going to

  1209. commentate for

  1210. us so I

  1211. can make some

  1212. points along

  1213. the way.

  1214. It's a little

  1215. long.

  1216. There's

  1217. Redmond in

  1218. lane five

  1219. wearing blue.

  1220. You'll be able

  1221. to tell who he

  1222. is in just a

  1223. minute.

  1224. He separates

  1225. from the pack

  1226. but he starts

  1227. really fast.

  1228. He's looking

  1229. good.

  1230. He's there

  1231. in the middle

  1232. looking strong

  1233. really, really

  1234. fast.

  1235. A little

  1236. faster than

  1237. me.

  1238. And then

  1239. oh no.

  1240. Oh.

  1241. He tears

  1242. his hamstring

  1243. and he's

  1244. down as the

  1245. other racers

  1246. kind of keep

  1247. going and he

  1248. just falls on

  1249. the track and

  1250. there they are

  1251. headed to the

  1252. finish line but

  1253. he is all

  1254. the way back

  1255. and then he

  1256. hobbles up

  1257. and he starts

  1258. limping his

  1259. way around

  1260. the track.

  1261. Look at his

  1262. face.

  1263. Like the

  1264. agony that he's

  1265. feeling.

  1266. You get a

  1267. close up here in

  1268. just a second.

  1269. He can barely

  1270. keep moving.

  1271. All of a sudden

  1272. somebody comes

  1273. running down out

  1274. of the stands.

  1275. Anybody know

  1276. who that is?

  1277. That's his

  1278. dad.

  1279. His dad gets

  1280. by security,

  1281. right?

  1282. Nobody's stopping

  1283. him.

  1284. And he

  1285. finds his

  1286. son, puts

  1287. his arm

  1288. around him.

  1289. Redmond

  1290. later, you

  1291. can keep

  1292. watching, just

  1293. listen to me.

  1294. Redmond says

  1295. what his dad

  1296. was saying to

  1297. him here.

  1298. He said the

  1299. first thing he

  1300. said was,

  1301. you're a

  1302. champion.

  1303. You've got

  1304. nothing to

  1305. prove.

  1306. You're a

  1307. champion.

  1308. He was

  1309. telling him

  1310. he didn't

  1311. have to keep

  1312. going.

  1313. He said,

  1314. I want to

  1315. get to the

  1316. finish line.

  1317. His dad

  1318. said, hey,

  1319. okay.

  1320. We started

  1321. this together.

  1322. We're going

  1323. to finish

  1324. this together.

  1325. He said,

  1326. that's what he

  1327. kept whispering

  1328. in his ear.

  1329. We're going

  1330. to finish

  1331. this together.

  1332. You will

  1333. notice that

  1334. his dad

  1335. has no

  1336. interest,

  1337. by the way,

  1338. in anybody

  1339. else helping.

  1340. It's one

  1341. of my

  1342. favorite parts.

  1343. He keeps

  1344. brushing up.

  1345. Dude, we

  1346. got this.

  1347. Leave us

  1348. alone.

  1349. Get off

  1350. the camera.

  1351. All the

  1352. way.

  1353. All the

  1354. way to the

  1355. finish line.

  1356. You can't

  1357. hear this

  1358. because I

  1359. turned the

  1360. audio off,

  1361. but as

  1362. they cross

  1363. the finish

  1364. line here,

  1365. there is

  1366. a huge

  1367. roar from

  1368. the crowd

  1369. like nobody

  1370. else who

  1371. won any

  1372. race.

  1373. Listen,

  1374. God has

  1375. challenged you

  1376. and warned

  1377. you pretty

  1378. hard today.

  1379. I feel

  1380. that.

  1381. The beauty

  1382. of the

  1383. word of

  1384. God,

  1385. of the

  1386. gospel of

  1387. Jesus,

  1388. is that

  1389. God is

  1390. not standing

  1391. far away

  1392. doing that.

  1393. When you've

  1394. fallen,

  1395. when you're

  1396. despairing,

  1397. when you're

  1398. not sure

  1399. that you

  1400. can finish

  1401. the race

  1402. and hold

  1403. on,

  1404. God has

  1405. come down

  1406. out of

  1407. heaven,

  1408. out of

  1409. the stands,

  1410. if you will,

  1411. and he's

  1412. put his

  1413. arm around

  1414. you and

  1415. said,

  1416. we started

  1417. this together.

  1418. I made

  1419. you.

  1420. I chose

  1421. you.

  1422. I went

  1423. to the

  1424. cross for

  1425. you.

  1426. I rose

  1427. from the

  1428. grave for

  1429. you.

  1430. I'm with

  1431. you now,

  1432. and I'm

  1433. coming back

  1434. for you.

  1435. We started

  1436. this together.

  1437. We're going

  1438. to finish

  1439. this together.

  1440. And that

  1441. roar from

  1442. the crowd,

  1443. I think

  1444. that's the

  1445. brothers and

  1446. sisters who

  1447. are yelling

  1448. alongside you.

  1449. They're yet

  1450. one more

  1451. reminder to

  1452. lean on

  1453. Jesus,

  1454. to hold

  1455. fast to

  1456. him,

  1457. the

  1458. faithful

  1459. savior.

  1460. They're

  1461. yelling so

  1462. that Jesus

  1463. can whisper

  1464. in your

  1465. ear right

  1466. now.

  1467. With his

  1468. arm around

  1469. you,

  1470. he's saying,

  1471. you don't

  1472. have to

  1473. figure it

  1474. all out.

  1475. You don't

  1476. have to

  1477. be the

  1478. strong one.

  1479. You don't

  1480. have to

  1481. have the

  1482. strength

  1483. to make

  1484. it to

  1485. the finish

  1486. line.

  1487. You just

  1488. trust me.

  1489. Lean on

  1490. me.

  1491. I'll bring

  1492. you home.

  1493. We're going

  1494. to finish

  1495. this together.

  1496. Today,

  1497. if you

  1498. hear his

  1499. voice,

  1500. don't

  1501. harden your

  1502. hearts.

  1503. Jesus,

  1504. help us

  1505. hear you.

  1506. Even if

  1507. you're

  1508. whispering to

  1509. us,

  1510. especially if

  1511. you're

  1512. shouting in

  1513. our pain,

  1514. help us to

  1515. know there's

  1516. someone holding

  1517. us,

  1518. to whom we

  1519. can hold

  1520. fast in our

  1521. weakness,

  1522. cast our

  1523. broken selves

  1524. on,

  1525. and be

  1526. safe,

  1527. and be

  1528. helped,

  1529. and be

  1530. strengthened

  1531. for however

  1532. many days

  1533. you have

  1534. left for

  1535. us here,

  1536. and for

  1537. an eternity

  1538. that we

  1539. look forward

  1540. to with

  1541. you.

  1542. Thank you

  1543. for being

  1544. our older

  1545. brother,

  1546. for coming

  1547. to us,

  1548. and making

  1549. us a part

  1550. of your

  1551. family.

  1552. Soften

  1553. our hearts.

  1554. Holy Spirit,

  1555. we need

  1556. you to

  1557. work.

  1558. Our

  1559. stony

  1560. hearts are

  1561. slow to

  1562. relent,

  1563. but Jesus,

  1564. you're so

  1565. beautiful,

  1566. you're so

  1567. wonderful,

  1568. you're so

  1569. good,

  1570. you can

  1571. make them

  1572. soft,

  1573. that we

  1574. might trust

  1575. you and

  1576. walk with

  1577. you even

  1578. today.

  1579. Do that

  1580. work right

  1581. now.

  1582. Keep working

  1583. on us and

  1584. don't let us

  1585. forget.

  1586. We ask in

  1587. your name.

  1588. Amen.
