  1. You are listening to a message from Southwood Presbyterian Church in Huntsville, Alabama.

  2. ! Our passion is to experience and express grace. Join us.

  3. We're returning this morning to our study through the book of Hebrews,

  4. ! where the writer has been telling us over and over about the greatness of Jesus, right?

  5. So that we will not drift away from Him, but we'll hold fast to Him.

  6. In fact, he's just started talking about Jesus as our great high priest, the one who brings us to God.

  7. And he has mentioned that Jesus is a priest in the order of Melchizedek.

  8. And he wants to explain that big unfamiliar name to us and all that that means about who Jesus is.

  9. It's rich teaching in the rest of this written sermon.

  10. But first, before he dives into that more, he stops and he wants to speak as a pastor to these early Christians.

  11. He loves them enough to say some really hard things.

  12. Some of them are famously hard to understand.

  13. Others are hard to hear, hard to embrace.

  14. There's a challenge with immediate urgency.

  15. There's a warning this morning with eternal ramifications.

  16. And thankfully, there's also a comfort full of hope for us.

  17. And it is important to the writer that everyone in the church hears all three of them.

  18. All for everyone.

  19. So we're going to read them and we're going to talk about them one at a time after we pray.

  20. Let's ask for God's help to hear from Him.

  21. Father, we need that to hear from you as we open your word.

  22. We're so grateful for it.

  23. And I'm just so aware this morning that I don't have the skill to explain it adequately.

  24. They don't have the attention span to hear it as they need.

  25. We together don't have the wisdom on our own to know everything it means for us in our lives.

  26. And so we need you.

  27. You know this, Father.

  28. We need your spirit.

  29. We need you to speak through your word that we might hear your voice and know your love.

  30. And we ask it in Jesus' name.

  31. Amen.

  32. Amen.

  33. First, a challenge.

  34. Hebrews 5 and verse 11.

  35. About this, this Melchizedek and Jesus being a high priest.

  36. About this we have much to say.

  37. And it is hard to explain since you have become dull of hearing.

  38. For though by this time you ought to be teachers,

  39. you need someone to teach you again the basic principles of the oracles of God.

  40. You need milk, not solid food.

  41. For everyone who lives on milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness since he is a child.

  42. But solid food is for the mature, for those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil.

  43. Therefore, let us leave the elementary doctrine of Christ and go on to maturity.

  44. Not laying again a foundation of repentance from dead works and of faith toward God and of instruction about washings, the laying on of hands, the resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgment.

  45. And this we will do if God permits.

  46. Imagine being in a graduate level seminar to discuss Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice.

  47. Or the U.S. Constitution.

  48. Or Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress.

  49. And you get together with everybody in the class and all the students can do when they get together is sing the ABC song.

  50. It's a good song.

  51. I mean, you need to know the ABCs.

  52. But you need to be able to put them together.

  53. You need to be able to read in order to discuss your thoughts.

  54. Or imagine the Von Trapp children who learn Do, Re, Mi, and so on.

  55. And then they say, well, that's a very good place to start.

  56. But what else do you sing?

  57. Imagine if they had stopped there and never built on that foundation of those notes.

  58. We'd never hear the inspiration to climb every mountain.

  59. Imagine if after pouring the foundation of the Eiffel Tower, they never built anything that went above ground level.

  60. Or if in your home, all you had was a rock foundation that was just poured over and over.

  61. Imagine all that you'd be missing out on if you just had a concrete slab.

  62. The foundation is important.

  63. Very important.

  64. But how much beauty and goodness would we miss out on if we didn't build on it, right?

  65. You see that?

  66. That's the challenge spiritually in these verses.

  67. Don't stop growing.

  68. Or if you prefer, grow up.

  69. No one wants to be called a baby, right?

  70. Right?

  71. The immaturity.

  72. The immaturity.

  73. The lack of growth is coming here from a spiritual dullness.

  74. A laziness.

  75. A laziness in this case of the ears, he says.

  76. You're not listening to God's word.

  77. To the truth about Jesus.

  78. That verse 13 says is a word of righteousness.

  79. To help you know how to live all of life with Jesus.

  80. Many in this church, it seems, they're settling for just a little bit of Jesus.

  81. Not making a priority of their faith every moment of every day.

  82. But, you know, stopping in for Jesus on an occasional Sunday.

  83. More than a couple of times, I've had a version of this conversation.

  84. Pastor, I gotta be honest with you, man.

  85. I really like you.

  86. But I really struggle with coming to church.

  87. I've been around a while.

  88. I basically know what I need to know, man.

  89. I'm going to heaven.

  90. And I know enough to know that there's nothing else I can do to earn anything else.

  91. So, it's just not all that exciting.

  92. Right?

  93. I mean, I see a few people there, but I could see them somewhere else.

  94. They're good friends.

  95. I just have a hard time wanting to be there.

  96. Have you thought that before?

  97. Maybe around minute 34, 35 of the sermon.

  98. Have you felt bored reading the Bible?

  99. Has your heart quit responding for a season to the worship of God's people when you gather?

  100. And you're there, but there's just nothing?

  101. That's a dullness of hearing.

  102. That you hear blessed assurance and you think, blessed assurance, I guess.

  103. A dullness of hearing that has settled for spiritual immaturity.

  104. I've got more for you, God says.

  105. Moving beyond the ABCs to building something beautiful in your spiritual growth, your maturity.

  106. Now, don't read this wrong.

  107. He's not against foundational things.

  108. The things listed here in verses 1 and 2 of chapter 6.

  109. He just wants them built on beautifully.

  110. Now, there's debate here about whether this list of things, this repentance, faith, washings, laying on of hands, resurrection, and judgment.

  111. Whether those are Jewish teachings that are in that sense the beginning of the word of Christ.

  112. That's literally what it means there in verse 1.

  113. The beginning of the word of Christ.

  114. In the sense of there being the shadow.

  115. The background that Jesus fulfills the reality of.

  116. That's one possibility.

  117. Or whether these are six foundational aspects of early Christian training.

  118. Perhaps for those about to be baptized.

  119. I think that there is a really good case in this context for the former.

  120. For these being aspects of the old covenant that Jesus is fulfilling now in a fresh way.

  121. But regardless of which one of those is correct.

  122. These are good things.

  123. Good things that must not be stopped at some just basic intellectual understanding of them.

  124. But applied to life in light of the greatness of Jesus.

  125. Right?

  126. It touches everything.

  127. So when you read this, don't hear him saying you have to be a graduate level Christian in order for God to love you.

  128. That's not what it means.

  129. He's not saying, well, Jesus is nice.

  130. I mean, faith alone in Christ alone.

  131. Yeah, yeah.

  132. But then you need to get to the real meat of Christianity.

  133. No.

  134. No way is that what he's saying.

  135. It's more like what Scotty reminded us last week when he was here with us.

  136. There's nothing more than Jesus.

  137. But there's always more of Jesus.

  138. That's what he's saying.

  139. Pastor Andrew Murray says it this way.

  140. That's what 514 means.

  141. This is not demanding that we know more truth to impress Jesus.

  142. But rather that we apply more truth to enjoy Jesus.

  143. To share Jesus.

  144. Take the ABCs and the do-re-mis of Jesus.

  145. His incarnation.

  146. His life.

  147. His death.

  148. His resurrection.

  149. His ascension.

  150. His return.

  151. Cling to those things.

  152. Cling to a relationship with him by faith that forgives your sins and grants you eternal salvation.

  153. And clinging to those things, use them to build something in every area of life.

  154. In every moment of your day.

  155. That's maturity, he says.

  156. Always more of Jesus.

  157. Like receiving his peace in your anxiety.

  158. Stewarding his gifts for his kingdom.

  159. Finding his comforting presence in the valley of the shadow of death.

  160. Reflecting his image in your workplace.

  161. Sharing his hope with your neighbor.

  162. Following his will for all of your life decisions.

  163. I mean, has anyone in here exhausted the areas and places and relationships where God has called you to a Christ-centered walk with him?

  164. Anybody just taking care of all of those?

  165. No way.

  166. Endless opportunities.

  167. But just think of how much we would be missing.

  168. If Christians didn't learn to apply, for example, the image of God in every man and woman to abolish the African slave trade.

  169. To apply the priesthood of Jesus to prayer in the very presence of God in the midst of my pain.

  170. To apply love for neighbor to hospitals or aid for refugees or orphanages.

  171. It would be like missing out on the Eiffel Tower or Edelweiss.

  172. Right?

  173. Don't stop growing in Jesus.

  174. That is the challenge for every one of us here.

  175. So how do I respond to that challenge?

  176. How do I not just brush this off like, hey, I'm already a teacher, so he's not talking to me.

  177. Yes, he is.

  178. How do I receive this word that is for all God's people?

  179. Let me urge you, no matter how long you've been learning or how much you've grown,

  180. there's always more of Jesus, amen?

  181. Always.

  182. Trust me.

  183. Don't move past him, but go deeper into Jesus.

  184. That's maturity that begins to grasp the ocean-sized greatness of Jesus.

  185. You're never going to plum it all, are you?

  186. Ask him to show you a part of your life that you've kept him out of.

  187. Your work, your marriage, your money.

  188. You're not praying.

  189. You're not evangelizing.

  190. You're not discipling someone else.

  191. What is it for you?

  192. I don't know, but no matter how many times you've read through the Bible, read it again.

  193. You'll learn something new.

  194. I always do.

  195. Every time I open God's word, it's one of the reasons it's such a gift to me to get to preach it.

  196. What a privilege.

  197. Maybe one last thought on how to listen and receive this challenge.

  198. If you're concerned that your ears are growing dull, sluggish, if you sense that, you're just not motivated or excited about the things of God,

  199. don't keep that to yourself in shame.

  200. We can do that in the church.

  201. Feel like, well, I just must be the only one.

  202. Now listen to what God wants for you.

  203. God wants to grow you to maturity.

  204. Ask someone to join you in praying for that renewal.

  205. You're asking for something he delights to give.

  206. Maybe ask that person to open God's word together so you can borrow one another's zeal.

  207. He does that to encourage our hearts.

  208. Southwood, we long and we pray to be a church that loves the word of Jesus and lives life with Jesus.

  209. We long for that.

  210. Don't stop growing ever.

  211. See, there's a specific danger in becoming spiritually stagnant.

  212. Why is it so important to keep growing in grace?

  213. More of Jesus.

  214. Living with him in every area of life.

  215. Here, the writer says it's because if you don't stand firm, you might stand away.

  216. That's literally what the word in verse 6 we think of as apostasy.

  217. That's what it means.

  218. You might actually stop believing.

  219. This is one of the most severe and most debated warnings in the whole Bible.

  220. Let's listen to it and then we'll look at it carefully.

  221. It's verse 4.

  222. For it is impossible in the case of those who have once been enlightened,

  223. who have tasted the heavenly gift and have shared in the Holy Spirit

  224. and have tasted the goodness of the word of God and the powers of the age to come,

  225. and then have fallen away.

  226. I'm going to read it off of this.

  227. To restore them again to repentance.

  228. Since they are crucifying once again the Son of God to their own harm

  229. and holding him up to contempt.

  230. For land that has drunk the rain that often falls on it

  231. and produces a crop useful to those for whose sake it is cultivated

  232. receives a blessing from God.

  233. But if it bears thorns and thistles, it is worthless and near to being cursed

  234. and its end is to be burned.

  235. If you were reading out of the Pew Bible and it seemed a little bit different,

  236. which is why I got lost,

  237. the translation has been slightly updated.

  238. This is an updated version.

  239. It says the same thing.

  240. It just moves some of the words around, okay?

  241. Don't get lost.

  242. Because those are hard words, aren't they?

  243. What do they mean?

  244. There's a lot of stuff in their language.

  245. We don't talk like this very often.

  246. What he's clearly talking about is people who appear to be saved.

  247. People who live among God's people,

  248. who sit in churches like this,

  249. hearing sermons like this one to the Hebrews,

  250. and yet fall away from Jesus.

  251. If you want more details on some of those phrases and descriptions,

  252. email me.

  253. I'll send you something I got.

  254. But just briefly,

  255. it says they've been enlightened.

  256. They've been taught the truth about God

  257. and not just heard it, but liked it.

  258. They've tasted the heavenly gift,

  259. actually experienced the blessings of God.

  260. They've shared in the Holy Spirit personally

  261. or by participation in the covenant community.

  262. They see the Spirit at work.

  263. They tasted the goodness of the Word of God

  264. and the powers of the age to come.

  265. In other words,

  266. they've learned from the Bible extensively.

  267. They've even witnessed,

  268. perhaps in some cases,

  269. performed miracles.

  270. From everything that anyone can tell,

  271. these people look like Christians.

  272. Any one of us would be very grateful

  273. to be described in such a way.

  274. But then,

  275. in the same description,

  276. it says these same people have also fallen away.

  277. Deliberately,

  278. completely,

  279. and finally

  280. rejected God.

  281. in fact,

  282. to the point of crucifying Jesus again,

  283. as it were,

  284. being like the Jewish or pagan unbelief

  285. that sent Jesus to his actual death

  286. by the public rejection

  287. and contempt

  288. that they place on this so-called

  289. crucified Messiah

  290. that they no longer believe in.

  291. This is not a one-time struggle with sin,

  292. a wrestling with doubt,

  293. but a determined rejection of salvation.

  294. Such a person,

  295. it says,

  296. it is impossible,

  297. jump down,

  298. to restore to repentance.

  299. So firm

  300. is their rejection of Jesus,

  301. it's impossible to restore

  302. to repentance.

  303. In fact,

  304. as the image he then gives points out,

  305. they may have received a lot of good rain.

  306. It looked like good stuff was coming in,

  307. but they produced thorns and thistles,

  308. perhaps hear Jesus' parable of the sower.

  309. And they end with being cursed

  310. or burned.

  311. Wow.

  312. Are there any people like that in the Bible?

  313. Anything we could think of

  314. that would help us understand

  315. what could be going on here?

  316. Well, the author of Hebrews

  317. has already pointed us to

  318. the cautionary example

  319. of Old Testament Israel

  320. who learned about God

  321. from a great teacher,

  322. Moses, right?

  323. Who experienced his powerful spirit,

  324. his miraculous work

  325. all the way up to and through

  326. the Red Sea itself.

  327. Amazing.

  328. Who tasted his daily blessing

  329. and manna and water.

  330. They were a part

  331. of his special people.

  332. And yet,

  333. how many

  334. did not reach

  335. the promised land?

  336. Paul tells us

  337. the example of these idolaters

  338. is for us.

  339. So that anyone

  340. who thinks he stands

  341. should take care

  342. lest he fall.

  343. Don't think you're above this.

  344. Paul warns.

  345. These were wonderful people.

  346. Special people.

  347. Watch out.

  348. You might think of others

  349. like Judas.

  350. His teacher pretty decent.

  351. Pretty good miracles he saw.

  352. I'd say so.

  353. Simon Magus

  354. who did powerful things

  355. in the name of Jesus

  356. but

  357. perhaps for the sake

  358. of his own name.

  359. I think of the scribe

  360. talking to Jesus.

  361. He heard from him

  362. the sobering words

  363. that I pray

  364. bore fruit

  365. in his heart later.

  366. You are not far

  367. from the kingdom of God.

  368. He knew so much.

  369. He got so much right.

  370. Seemed like everything.

  371. But did he actually

  372. place his faith

  373. in the Jesus

  374. that he learned

  375. so much about

  376. and valued so highly?

  377. See being baptized

  378. is not magical.

  379. Giving 10%

  380. is not enough.

  381. Neither is 100%

  382. for that matter.

  383. You can't buy it.

  384. Assuming you're a Christian

  385. because you're southern

  386. or white

  387. or American

  388. is deceptive heresy

  389. that can't bring you to God

  390. but it can keep you from God.

  391. Warning in my words.

  392. Knowing a lot about Jesus

  393. is not the same

  394. as knowing Jesus.

  395. Teachers,

  396. Presbyterians,

  397. beware.

  398. Knowing a lot about Jesus

  399. is not the same

  400. as knowing Jesus.

  401. Kids,

  402. you know we love you.

  403. But being born

  404. in Southwood Church

  405. is not the same

  406. as being reborn

  407. into life

  408. with Jesus.

  409. In fact,

  410. rejecting the blessings

  411. of the covenant family

  412. of God

  413. is dangerous.

  414. In other words,

  415. understanding the truth

  416. of your need,

  417. seeing the solution,

  418. the provision of grace

  419. at the cross of Jesus

  420. only to turn away

  421. in pride

  422. from such a salvation

  423. is a sobering choice.

  424. Dear ones,

  425. young and old,

  426. don't make that choice.

  427. Please don't live

  428. not far

  429. from this pulpit

  430. and not far

  431. from the kingdom of God.

  432. No,

  433. no one.

  434. So how do you hear

  435. this warning

  436. and not say

  437. what many of our hearts

  438. naturally do,

  439. which is,

  440. oh,

  441. that's not for me.

  442. It's not talking to me.

  443. Well,

  444. if you're hearing it,

  445. don't fall away

  446. means that you haven't yet.

  447. Right?

  448. It's a good place to start.

  449. A great place

  450. for us to start

  451. would then be

  452. taking all of the warnings

  453. of Hebrews seriously

  454. with the directives.

  455. What does he tell us to do?

  456. What he keeps warning us?

  457. Hold fast to Jesus.

  458. Fix your eyes on Jesus.

  459. Pay much closer attention

  460. to the Bible's message

  461. about Jesus.

  462. Draw near to God

  463. afresh through Jesus.

  464. Find rest for your soul

  465. in Jesus.

  466. Grow up bearing fruit

  467. in Jesus.

  468. That's what we mean

  469. by talking about

  470. faith priority

  471. around here so much.

  472. You probably heard

  473. those words this year.

  474. what we're talking about

  475. is to take ownership

  476. of your relationship

  477. with God.

  478. The relationship you have

  479. through faith in Jesus.

  480. Making a priority

  481. of learning what that means

  482. for every moment

  483. of your life.

  484. Not just for one day,

  485. someday in heaven,

  486. but a priority now.

  487. At the same time,

  488. don't assume that you're

  489. above falling away

  490. because you've been around

  491. long enough

  492. or you've done enough.

  493. Don't assume that

  494. about someone

  495. who used to sit next to you

  496. regularly

  497. and now you don't see them

  498. and they can never make

  499. grace group.

  500. Love them enough

  501. to reach out

  502. and check in.

  503. Would you pray?

  504. Pray for God's

  505. preserving grace

  506. for yourself

  507. and for your whole

  508. church family.

  509. Reminding one another

  510. of the greatness

  511. of your need for Jesus

  512. and the greatness

  513. of Jesus.

  514. Those are ways

  515. to heed this warning.

  516. Before we move on,

  517. I want to assure you

  518. that it is God's grace

  519. that you can trust

  520. to secure for all time

  521. your relationship

  522. with Him.

  523. This passage

  524. was written

  525. pastorally

  526. to direct our hearts,

  527. I believe,

  528. to challenge us

  529. to a heart check.

  530. Okay?

  531. That's the motivation

  532. behind these words.

  533. But many of you know

  534. the big theological debate

  535. centers around

  536. whether or not

  537. it teaches

  538. that someone

  539. truly saved

  540. can actually lose

  541. his salvation.

  542. salvation.

  543. I'm convinced

  544. that it does not

  545. teach that.

  546. Happy to send you

  547. more on that.

  548. I'm convinced

  549. of that

  550. both from this passage

  551. itself

  552. and from many others

  553. in the Bible.

  554. Once saved,

  555. always saved

  556. or the perseverance

  557. or the preservation

  558. of the saints

  559. is true.

  560. It's biblical.

  561. You can count on it.

  562. But I didn't want

  563. to let our hearts

  564. off the hook

  565. so simply

  566. with a theological

  567. reassurance

  568. from our systematic

  569. theologies.

  570. Hebrews wants us

  571. to go somewhere else

  572. for that assurance.

  573. Have you figured out where?

  574. Hebrews wants us

  575. to run to Jesus

  576. for that assurance.

  577. not some system

  578. of theology

  579. that you've heard taught.

  580. The people

  581. described here

  582. are best understood

  583. as those who

  584. very much

  585. appear saved

  586. but when they

  587. go out

  588. from us

  589. they reveal

  590. that they were not

  591. actually

  592. of us.

  593. Those are the words

  594. of 1 John.

  595. But y'all

  596. that's not

  597. a reason

  598. just to take

  599. a deep breath

  600. and disregard.

  601. That's sobering.

  602. All of us

  603. should be

  604. sobered.

  605. But neither

  606. the author

  607. of Hebrews

  608. nor God

  609. himself

  610. wants you

  611. to be sobered

  612. into fearful

  613. despair.

  614. So I want to

  615. make sure

  616. to talk about

  617. this for just

  618. a second.

  619. I had this

  620. experience

  621. as a young

  622. boy.

  623. I remember

  624. reading passages

  625. like this one

  626. and another one

  627. I believe

  628. is connected

  629. to it

  630. about the

  631. unforgivable

  632. sin.

  633. I don't remember

  634. exactly how old

  635. I was.

  636. I remember

  637. exactly how

  638. scared I was

  639. by that.

  640. To the point

  641. that one night

  642. I couldn't

  643. go to sleep.

  644. I remember

  645. going and

  646. calling my dad

  647. to come back

  648. and saying

  649. dad I'm

  650. just so afraid

  651. that I've

  652. committed

  653. that unforgivable

  654. sin.

  655. I loved

  656. Jesus

  657. but what

  658. if I had

  659. done that

  660. and didn't

  661. know?

  662. He very

  663. helpfully

  664. told me

  665. that the

  666. fact

  667. that I

  668. was

  669. concerned

  670. about

  671. that

  672. that I

  673. didn't

  674. want

  675. to do

  676. it

  677. that I

  678. loved

  679. Jesus

  680. and his

  681. grace

  682. and his

  683. forgiveness

  684. that those

  685. were really

  686. good

  687. indications

  688. that I

  689. had not

  690. fallen away

  691. to where

  692. it would

  693. be impossible

  694. to be

  695. forgiven

  696. to be

  697. restored

  698. to repentance.

  699. Don't

  700. let this

  701. drive your

  702. heart to

  703. that kind

  704. of despair.

  705. Don't

  706. ignore

  707. the concern

  708. in your

  709. heart

  710. that you

  711. might feel

  712. this morning

  713. but let

  714. any

  715. concern

  716. that you

  717. feel about

  718. apostasy

  719. drive you

  720. not to

  721. despair away

  722. from Jesus

  723. but drive

  724. you where?

  725. Drive you

  726. to Jesus.

  727. That's the

  728. one that you're

  729. worried even

  730. this morning

  731. you might be

  732. falling away

  733. from.

  734. Don't

  735. let that

  736. fear drive

  737. you to

  738. Jesus

  739. himself.

  740. He promises

  741. to save

  742. you and

  743. keep you

  744. so that no

  745. one can

  746. snatch you

  747. out of

  748. his hand

  749. not even

  750. you.

  751. So that

  752. nothing

  753. can separate

  754. you from

  755. his love

  756. not even

  757. your sin.

  758. That's

  759. the Savior

  760. you have.

  761. Run to

  762. him.

  763. That's where

  764. Hebrews ends

  765. this section

  766. with comfort.

  767. There's a

  768. little bit

  769. now and

  770. there's a

  771. whole boatload

  772. of it next

  773. week before

  774. he turns back

  775. to Melchizedek

  776. and Jesus.

  777. Listen to

  778. what he's

  779. going to

  780. say especially

  781. if you're

  782. discouraged

  783. right now.

  784. Don't

  785. stop listening

  786. to God's

  787. word.

  788. He's not

  789. finished yet

  790. with this

  791. communication

  792. that he's

  793. giving them.

  794. He's going

  795. to say

  796. don't

  797. stop

  798. hoping.

  799. Don't

  800. stop

  801. growing.

  802. Don't

  803. stop

  804. believing.

  805. Don't

  806. stop

  807. hoping.

  808. Verse

  809. nine.

  810. Though

  811. we speak

  812. in this

  813. way

  814. difficult

  815. hard

  816. things

  817. yet in

  818. your case

  819. beloved

  820. we feel

  821. sure of

  822. better

  823. things.

  824. Things

  825. that belong

  826. to salvation.

  827. For God

  828. is not

  829. unjust

  830. so as to

  831. overlook

  832. your work

  833. and the

  834. love that

  835. you have

  836. shown for

  837. his name

  838. and serving

  839. the saints

  840. as you

  841. still do.

  842. And we

  843. desire each

  844. one of you

  845. to show

  846. the same

  847. earnestness

  848. to have

  849. the full

  850. assurance

  851. of hope

  852. until the

  853. end

  854. so that

  855. you may

  856. not be

  857. sluggish

  858. but imitators

  859. of those

  860. who through

  861. faith and

  862. patience

  863. inherit

  864. the promises.

  865. The warning

  866. is really

  867. clear

  868. but to

  869. everyone

  870. who hears

  871. this

  872. warning

  873. he also

  874. writes

  875. that his

  876. confidence

  877. with them

  878. is of

  879. things

  880. that belong

  881. to

  882. salvation.

  883. In fact

  884. believer in

  885. Jesus

  886. he wants

  887. you to

  888. have the

  889. full

  890. assurance

  891. of hope.

  892. Don't

  893. stop

  894. hoping.

  895. Remember

  896. last week

  897. Scotty said

  898. hope is

  899. not

  900. here

  901. a

  902. wishful

  903. feeling

  904. pie

  905. in

  906. the

  907. sky

  908. but

  909. a

  910. certain

  911. reality

  912. grace

  913. on the

  914. ground.

  915. Hope

  916. is

  917. something

  918. firm

  919. that you

  920. can

  921. hold

  922. on

  923. to

  924. and

  925. that

  926. you

  927. can

  928. count

  929. on

  930. to

  931. hold

  932. on

  933. to

  934. you.

  935. Notice

  936. the source

  937. of our

  938. hope.

  939. In

  940. your

  941. case

  942. these

  943. salvation

  944. things

  945. for

  946. God.

  947. God's

  948. character

  949. promises

  950. God's

  951. promises

  952. and

  953. look

  954. verse

  955. 10

  956. again

  957. God

  958. is

  959. the

  960. one

  961. producing

  962. fruit

  963. in

  964. your

  965. lives

  966. together

  967. as

  968. his

  969. people.

  970. You're

  971. loving

  972. one

  973. another.

  974. You're

  975. trusting

  976. God

  977. in

  978. hard

  979. seasons.

  980. You're

  981. enduring

  982. with

  983. patience

  984. when

  985. the

  986. world

  987. says

  988. you're

  989. missing

  990. out

  991. and

  992. God

  993. can't

  994. be

  995. counted

  996. on.

  997. You're

  998. doing

  999. those

  1000. things.

  1001. He's

  1002. encouraging

  1003. you

  1004. keep

  1005. it

  1006. up.

  1007. Grow

  1008. in

  1009. grace.

  1010. To

  1011. maturity.

  1012. Not

  1013. sluggishly

  1014. avoiding

  1015. God's

  1016. word

  1017. but

  1018. eagerly

  1019. earnestly

  1020. shaping

  1021. your

  1022. life

  1023. around

  1024. it.

  1025. So

  1026. that

  1027. when

  1028. you

  1029. see

  1030. a

  1031. self

  1032. driven

  1033. person

  1034. submit

  1035. to

  1036. God's

  1037. word

  1038. when

  1039. you

  1040. see

  1041. a

  1042. selfish

  1043. person

  1044. love

  1045. his

  1046. neighbor

  1047. and

  1048. sacrifice

  1049. when

  1050. you

  1051. see

  1052. a

  1053. self

  1054. centered

  1055. person

  1056. show

  1057. up

  1058. at

  1059. a

  1060. church

  1061. to

  1062. listen

  1063. to

  1064. a

  1065. pastor

  1066. who's

  1067. preaching

  1068. he really

  1069. doesn't

  1070. love

  1071. to

  1072. grow

  1073. in

  1074. love

  1075. for a

  1076. savior

  1077. he wants

  1078. to love

  1079. and to

  1080. show

  1081. his love

  1082. to people

  1083. he doesn't

  1084. even know

  1085. if he

  1086. likes.

  1087. When you

  1088. see that

  1089. you can be

  1090. certain

  1091. God's at

  1092. work

  1093. that's

  1094. what he's

  1095. producing

  1096. among

  1097. you.

  1098. So

  1099. God

  1100. wants you

  1101. to have

  1102. the

  1103. full

  1104. assurance

  1105. of hope

  1106. that

  1107. blessed

  1108. assurance

  1109. Jesus

  1110. is

  1111. mine

  1112. Christ

  1113. is

  1114. my

  1115. hope

  1116. in

  1117. life

  1118. and

  1119. death

  1120. I

  1121. don't

  1122. have

  1123. any

  1124. other

  1125. and so

  1126. that

  1127. as

  1128. that

  1129. becomes

  1130. your

  1131. hope

  1132. even

  1133. the

  1134. weakest

  1135. of us

  1136. indwelt

  1137. and empowered

  1138. by his

  1139. spirit

  1140. become

  1141. heroes

  1142. of the

  1143. faith

  1144. just by

  1145. clinging

  1146. to Jesus

  1147. when we

  1148. become

  1149. Eiffel

  1150. Towers

  1151. displaying

  1152. the wonders

  1153. of his

  1154. love

  1155. the glories

  1156. of his

  1157. grace

  1158. in every

  1159. moment

  1160. of your

  1161. life

  1162. if that's

  1163. going to

  1164. happen

  1165. with us

  1166. we'll

  1167. need

  1168. Jesus

  1169. for that

  1170. won't

  1171. we

  1172. and that's

  1173. why he's

  1174. come

  1175. that's

  1176. why

  1177. Jesus

  1178. is here

  1179. to eat

  1180. with us

  1181. to remind

  1182. us

  1183. that he's

  1184. the one

  1185. who loves

  1186. us

  1187. and gives

  1188. us

  1189. everything

  1190. that we

  1191. need

  1192. for life

  1193. and godliness

  1194. it's why

  1195. he sat

  1196. with his

  1197. disciples

  1198. that night

  1199. that he was

  1200. betrayed

  1201. and he took

  1202. bread

  1203. and he broke

  1204. it

  1205. and he gave

  1206. it to them

  1207. as I

  1208. ministering

  1209. in his

  1210. name

  1211. give this

  1212. bread

  1213. to you

  1214. he said

  1215. take and eat

  1216. this is my

  1217. body

  1218. given for

  1219. you

  1220. do this

  1221. in remembrance

  1222. of me

  1223. in the same

  1224. way after

  1225. supper

  1226. he took

  1227. the cup

  1228. and said

  1229. this cup

  1230. is the new

  1231. covenant

  1232. in my

  1233. blood

  1234. shed for

  1235. many

  1236. for the

  1237. forgiveness

  1238. of sins

  1239. drink from

  1240. it all

  1241. of you

  1242. for as

  1243. often as

  1244. you eat

  1245. this bread

  1246. and drink

  1247. this cup

  1248. you proclaim

  1249. the lord's

  1250. death

  1251. until he

  1252. comes

  1253. I'm aware

  1254. that it is

  1255. certainly

  1256. possible

  1257. that a

  1258. passage like

  1259. hebrews 6

  1260. has some

  1261. of us

  1262. confused

  1263. this morning

  1264. about whether

  1265. or not to

  1266. come to

  1267. the lord's

  1268. table

  1269. let me try

  1270. to simplify

  1271. it

  1272. for those

  1273. of you

  1274. who have

  1275. been

  1276. baptized

  1277. into

  1278. Jesus

  1279. as

  1280. members

  1281. of his

  1282. church

  1283. this one

  1284. or any

  1285. other

  1286. if

  1287. that's

  1288. you

  1289. and if

  1290. in

  1291. considering

  1292. your

  1293. weakness

  1294. your

  1295. immaturity

  1296. your

  1297. need

  1298. today

  1299. you look

  1300. here

  1301. and you

  1302. see

  1303. Jesus

  1304. as the

  1305. one you

  1306. need

  1307. as the

  1308. one who

  1309. meets

  1310. those

  1311. needs

  1312. and that's

  1313. what you

  1314. see here

  1315. then you

  1316. come

  1317. you come

  1318. even come

  1319. confessing

  1320. more sin

  1321. come

  1322. seeking

  1323. more grace

  1324. come

  1325. praying

  1326. for more

  1327. growth

  1328. but come

  1329. to the

  1330. one who

  1331. gives

  1332. those

  1333. things

  1334. in

  1335. himself

  1336. if

  1337. on the

  1338. other

  1339. hand

  1340. you

  1341. maybe

  1342. you

  1343. usually

  1344. take

  1345. the

  1346. lord's

  1347. supper

  1348. but

  1349. even

  1350. as you

  1351. listen

  1352. to this

  1353. passage

  1354. you

  1355. realize

  1356. that

  1357. your

  1358. confidence

  1359. on the

  1360. one

  1361. hand

  1362. or

  1363. perhaps

  1364. your

  1365. fear

  1366. on the

  1367. other

  1368. hand

  1369. is

  1370. based

  1371. entirely

  1372. on

  1373. your

  1374. performance

  1375. or

  1376. your

  1377. lack

  1378. of

  1379. performance

  1380. if

  1381. that's

  1382. what

  1383. you

  1384. look

  1385. up

  1386. here

  1387. and

  1388. see

  1389. just

  1390. another

  1391. religious

  1392. ritual

  1393. to

  1394. kind

  1395. of

  1396. mark

  1397. you

  1398. as

  1399. a

  1400. Christian

  1401. instead

  1402. of

  1403. something

  1404. else

  1405. I

  1406. would

  1407. urge

  1408. you

  1409. not

  1410. to

  1411. come

  1412. take

  1413. these

  1414. elements

  1415. this

  1416. morning

  1417. come

  1418. running

  1419. to

  1420. Jesus

  1421. make

  1422. sure

  1423. first

  1424. that

  1425. your

  1426. heart

  1427. is

  1428. actually

  1429. running

  1430. to

  1431. him

  1432. he's

  1433. the

  1434. only

  1435. one

  1436. who

  1437. can

  1438. remove

  1439. from

  1440. you

  1441. that

  1442. need

  1443. to

  1444. perform

  1445. to

  1446. be

  1447. good

  1448. enough

  1449. who

  1450. can

  1451. cover

  1452. over

  1453. the

  1454. ways

  1455. you

  1456. failed

  1457. to

  1458. do

  1459. that

  1460. come

  1461. and

  1462. run

  1463. to

  1464. him

  1465. we

  1466. would

  1467. love

  1468. to

  1469. pray

  1470. with

  1471. you

  1472. ask

  1473. him

  1474. for

  1475. fresh

  1476. faith

  1477. come

  1478. receive

  1479. from

  1480. him

  1481. fresh

  1482. ears

  1483. to

  1484. hear

  1485. and

  1486. long

  1487. for

  1488. his

  1489. truth

  1490. and

  1491. grace

  1492. we'd

  1493. love

  1494. to

  1495. share

  1496. more

  1497. about

  1498. him

  1499. with

  1500. you

  1501. let

  1502. me

  1503. pray

  1504. and

  1505. then

  1506. we'll

  1507. celebrate

  1508. together

  1509. Jesus

  1510. would

  1511. you

  1512. by

  1513. your

  1514. spirit

  1515. direct

  1516. our

  1517. hearts

  1518. to

  1519. our

  1520. desperate

  1521. need

  1522. but

  1523. also

  1524. your

  1525. grace

  1526. that

  1527. abounds

  1528. all

  1529. the

  1530. more

  1531. oh

  1532. how

  1533. we

  1534. need

  1535. it

  1536. and

  1537. would

  1538. we

  1539. taste

  1540. of

  1541. you

  1542. as

  1543. we

  1544. eat

  1545. with

  1546. you

  1547. use

  1548. common

  1549. elements

  1550. for

  1551. holy

  1552. purposes

  1553. because

  1554. we

  1555. so

  1556. need

  1557. you

  1558. to

  1559. we

  1560. ask

  1561. in

  1562. your

  1563. name

  1564. amen
