  1. You are listening to a message from Southwood Presbyterian Church in Huntsville, Alabama.

  2. ! Our passion is to experience and express grace. Join us.

  3. ! I love that song. Y'all did such a fantastic job.

  4. That gets me ready for Easter. Anybody else excited for Easter?

  5. I do hope you'll join us for our special services this week

  6. as we think more about the cross and the resurrection.

  7. Thursday night at 6 o'clock, we'll talk through the first three of Jesus' seven sayings from the cross.

  8. We'll celebrate the Lord's Supper Friday at 3.

  9. We'll do the last four sayings in that service.

  10. And then Sunday morning, 6 o'clock outside and 9.30 back in here.

  11. So much to celebrate. Amen.

  12. And we celebrate, thank you, the crucifixion and the resurrection of Jesus every day, don't we?

  13. That song. It's an Easter song.

  14. This sermon is Easter focused.

  15. It is Easter part one, if you will.

  16. I mean, I do hope you'll come back, but you're going to get Easter this morning.

  17. And I am pretty fired up, to be honest with you, about this glorious text.

  18. Before I read it, let me ask you to think about something.

  19. I want you to think about how God views you today.

  20. In a variety of potential situations you might find yourself in.

  21. For the sake of this exercise, let's assume that you're a follower of Jesus.

  22. You're in relationship with God, who, remember, is the infinite, holy, holy, holy, just God of the universe.

  23. Okay?

  24. Here's some potential situations.

  25. You're doing that same thing again that you know God's Word tells you not to do.

  26. That you have promised God before you'd never do again.

  27. How does God feel about you today?

  28. Or you're just so confused and you're frustrated by the events that are going on around you in the world and in your life.

  29. And you just, you don't even know how to pray anything at all.

  30. How does God feel today?

  31. Or you're really struggling with doubts again.

  32. Is God really there?

  33. Is He really good?

  34. Is He really in control?

  35. You're just not sure what to think anymore, honestly.

  36. How does God feel about you today?

  37. Is God perhaps disappointed in you?

  38. Seriously?

  39. Again?

  40. Or maybe He's just done caring.

  41. He's really disinterested.

  42. Like, I mean, I guess I'm going to have to let you into heaven one day.

  43. But in the meantime, could you try to get it together?

  44. Or maybe you feel even worse that God's dismissive of you.

  45. He's ready to be done with you.

  46. Putting you in the doghouse.

  47. Don't try to pretend we're good.

  48. Don't expect blessing from me.

  49. Stay away for a while.

  50. You're in time out.

  51. And the next time this happens, it'll be even worse.

  52. To be clear, the Bible's honest that all of those would be very fair things for God to feel towards you, wouldn't they?

  53. He's a righteous king.

  54. He ought to feel those things towards us.

  55. In fact, He is so pure that He has to incinerate sin.

  56. He can't have it in His presence.

  57. It has to be kept away from Him permanently.

  58. And here we are.

  59. We're sinners wondering then perhaps if we can have any relationship at all with this holy God.

  60. Hebrews has been telling us Jesus is the key to this.

  61. Specifically, that He's our great high priest to stand before this holy God on our behalf.

  62. Hebrews 7 has shown Jesus in a permanent, God-appointed role as priest like Melchizedek.

  63. Pastor Bill taught us so well last week, I don't even have to talk about Melchizedek.

  64. And now, He shows us how God relates to, feels about us who trust Jesus as our high priest.

  65. What's our relationship with God today?

  66. It's all about what Jesus is doing today.

  67. Let's read at verse 23 of Hebrews 7.

  68. The former priests were many in number because they were prevented by death from continuing in office.

  69. But Jesus holds His priesthood permanently because He continues forever.

  70. Consequently, He is able to save to the uttermost those who draw near to God through Him

  71. since He always lives to make intercession for them.

  72. For it was indeed fitting that we should have such a high priest.

  73. Holy, innocent, unstained, separated from sinners and exalted above the heavens.

  74. He has no need like those high priests to offer sacrifices daily first for His own sins

  75. and then for those of the people since He did this once for all when He offered up Himself.

  76. For the law appoints men in their weakness as high priests.

  77. But the word of the oath, which came later than the law, appoints a son who has been made perfect forever.

  78. This is God's Word. Let's ask for His help.

  79. Father, this is really glorious beyond what You know I have the capacity or abilities to describe.

  80. So, Spirit, would You speak?

  81. Would we hear these words in a fresh way?

  82. Would it give us fresh hope and confidence and joy in our Savior?

  83. We ask in His name. Amen.

  84. Amen.

  85. What's Jesus doing today?

  86. You ever think about that?

  87. What's Jesus up to?

  88. Well, the Bible tells us many things, including that He is sustaining the world by the word of His power.

  89. He's ruling and reigning over the nations.

  90. He's preparing to return and rescue us and restore all things.

  91. That's a lot.

  92. But here, the writer tells us that He always lives to make intercession for those who trust in Him.

  93. This is the role of the priest that Hebrews has been telling us about.

  94. The one who represents the people in the presence of God.

  95. And this, then, is unbelievable.

  96. In every way, this is transformational about how God relates to you.

  97. Here's what it is.

  98. Jesus is praying for you.

  99. What's Jesus doing today?

  100. Jesus is praying for you.

  101. It's unbelievable.

  102. If you didn't realize that, I want this to come home.

  103. Because sometimes that's a general thing, okay?

  104. Jesus is praying for you.

  105. Great.

  106. Jesus is taking our groans, our wandering prayers, and He's making them beautiful to the Father.

  107. Fourth century church father, John Chrysostom, said this is like a little boy who wants to welcome his father home from a trip.

  108. And so, he goes to make a bouquet for his father, and he gathers, well, mostly weeds and grass and a couple of flowers.

  109. But thankfully, before giving them to his father, he delivers them to his mother, who takes them and fixes them up.

  110. And when the father comes home and gets the bouquet, it's all flowers.

  111. Chrysostom says,

  112. See, Jesus' intercession means He is the one, the only one through whom we pray, through whom we talk to God.

  113. He's the way.

  114. Don't need saints.

  115. Don't need angels.

  116. Kids, I want you to think about this.

  117. When you sit at home and you sit around the dining room table or wherever you sit to eat your meal, probably y'all often pray before you eat.

  118. And when you are getting kind of towards the end of the prayer, do you maybe pray something like,

  119. In Jesus' name, amen?

  120. Is that how you end?

  121. When you say that, what is that?

  122. Is that just like saying, Goodbye, God.

  123. We're through now.

  124. We're going to eat.

  125. I want to tell you it's a lot more than that.

  126. When you say, In Jesus' name, what you're saying is that Jesus is actually praying with you and for you.

  127. It's like Jesus is actually coming right down there with you as you're praying at the dinner table and taking your prayers and walking them up towards God,

  128. making them beautiful and perfect along the way and giving them to God so He hears you praying.

  129. Isn't that awesome?

  130. That's what it means to pray in Jesus' name, that that's the way we come to God.

  131. Kids, God loves to hear you pray.

  132. Jesus loves to pray for you.

  133. In fact, we know this from His high priestly prayer in John 17,

  134. that when Jesus prays for you, He actually thanks God for giving you to Him as a gift.

  135. And He prays that you would be with Him forever.

  136. Isn't that so encouraging?

  137. That's what Jesus is praying for you.

  138. Scottish pastor Robert Murray McShane said of the confidence that he found in Jesus' intercession for him,

  139. he said,

  140. If I could hear Christ praying for me in the next room, I would not fear a million enemies.

  141. Yet distance makes no difference.

  142. He is praying for me.

  143. Jesus praying for you is part of His intercession.

  144. It's part of what Jesus is doing today.

  145. But Hebrews is even more specific about what He's praying for.

  146. This word, intercession, it has a legal context, okay?

  147. Someone is representing you, speaking on your behalf to the judge, right?

  148. Remember, we desperately need a representative before a holy God,

  149. or we sinners are in big trouble on our own, right?

  150. Jesus steps forward and says,

  151. I'll speak.

  152. I'll stand.

  153. I'll offer to be your representative.

  154. You've probably heard that line at the end of lawyers' ads.

  155. No representation is made that the quality of legal services to be performed

  156. is greater than the quality of legal services performed by other lawyers.

  157. It's usually faster than that.

  158. It's all I can come up with.

  159. Y'all, here in Hebrews, on the contrary,

  160. every representation is being made

  161. that the quality of legal services offered by Jesus

  162. is greater than the quality of legal services you can get anywhere else.

  163. That's the whole point.

  164. That's what He's saying.

  165. He's saying, this is what I'm offering you.

  166. And so what I want us to see is three ways

  167. that Jesus as the great high priest

  168. is the greater intercessor,

  169. the better representative.

  170. And the first is at the foundation of all of it.

  171. What is His unique basis for His intercession?

  172. He's got one that nobody else offers.

  173. How does Jesus build a case for a sinner like me

  174. before a holy God?

  175. Don't miss this.

  176. Verse 26.

  177. It was indeed fitting that we should have such a high priest.

  178. What's He like?

  179. What kind?

  180. A holy, innocent, unstained,

  181. separated from sinners,

  182. and exalted above the heavens.

  183. Stop there for a second.

  184. That's actually a little odd.

  185. You may remember the last time we were told

  186. that Jesus was a fitting high priest.

  187. Do you remember why it was fitting?

  188. Why was Jesus fitting?

  189. He actually was fitting because He had been made low

  190. to suffer like us.

  191. That He had been tempted in every way as we are.

  192. That He had become like us

  193. so He could be sympathetic with us as a high priest.

  194. Jesus is that.

  195. And at the same time also completely, morally, ceremonially,

  196. pure, above us,

  197. in God's throne room,

  198. actually standing before the very throne of grace.

  199. No merely human priest goes there.

  200. No way.

  201. And He doesn't need, verse 27,

  202. to offer sacrifices for His own sins.

  203. Why?

  204. Because He doesn't have any.

  205. And so He was actually able

  206. to make a perfect sacrifice of what?

  207. Of Himself.

  208. We got to get this.

  209. See, back in Leviticus,

  210. God's people were told to bring sin offerings

  211. every time they sinned, right?

  212. It was a lamb or whatever animal

  213. always had to have no spot,

  214. no wrinkle,

  215. no blemish.

  216. That happened thousands and thousands

  217. and thousands of times.

  218. And then for the first time,

  219. a person was offered

  220. as a perfect sacrifice

  221. with no spot,

  222. no wrinkle,

  223. no blemish.

  224. And that was where?

  225. At the cross of Jesus.

  226. God appoints Jesus as priest

  227. not for His weakness,

  228. but here because He's the Son

  229. made perfect forever.

  230. Perfect priest

  231. who can offer a perfect sacrifice.

  232. That is the priest

  233. that we imperfect people desperately need.

  234. No one else can make a case

  235. for us like this.

  236. It's like Anna

  237. with true love

  238. interceding

  239. before the sword

  240. that's coming,

  241. crashing down

  242. on her sister.

  243. Like that,

  244. Jesus intercedes

  245. for us.

  246. Throwing Himself

  247. between us

  248. and the wrath

  249. of a holy God.

  250. He takes it.

  251. See,

  252. what that means

  253. is that

  254. when you mess up,

  255. Jesus doesn't say to God,

  256. now listen,

  257. Father,

  258. take it easy on Will.

  259. I mean,

  260. he's a pretty good guy.

  261. He really tries,

  262. Your Honor.

  263. I know he blows it a lot,

  264. but give him another shot.

  265. He'll do better next time.

  266. No.

  267. Jesus' case for you

  268. focuses not on you.

  269. But on Himself.

  270. When Jesus prays for you,

  271. He's asking God

  272. to give you

  273. not a second chance

  274. to do better,

  275. but a second representative

  276. who has done better.

  277. Better than Adam.

  278. Better than me.

  279. Better than you.

  280. Jesus,

  281. the perfect Son.

  282. He's saying,

  283. God,

  284. give Him that record.

  285. Why is it

  286. that we can sing

  287. about our souls

  288. rising up

  289. and shaking off

  290. their guilty fears?

  291. Is it because

  292. we've done really well?

  293. What are we saying?

  294. The bleeding sacrifice

  295. on my behalf

  296. appears.

  297. Before the throne,

  298. our surety stands

  299. with our names

  300. written on His hands.

  301. Can you believe that?

  302. Jesus says,

  303. Father,

  304. this will guy,

  305. let me tell you

  306. what's important

  307. about him.

  308. I bled for him.

  309. I see it right here.

  310. I bled for that guy.

  311. Jesus stands

  312. to make your case

  313. before the throne of God

  314. and He speaks

  315. of His five bleeding wounds

  316. that pour effectual prayers

  317. that strongly plead for me.

  318. Forgive Him,

  319. Father,

  320. wretched sinner

  321. though He be.

  322. Forgive Him

  323. for my sake.

  324. That's what happens.

  325. Hear how Paul says it

  326. in Romans 8.

  327. Why does Paul say,

  328. no charges stick

  329. against us?

  330. Why is that true?

  331. Christ Jesus

  332. died

  333. and was raised

  334. to light

  335. and is indeed

  336. present tense

  337. today

  338. interceding

  339. for us.

  340. You know what that means

  341. for you and me?

  342. That means actually

  343. that if we think of Jesus

  344. asking God

  345. to be merciful

  346. and gracious,

  347. when Jesus is pleading

  348. your case

  349. before God,

  350. He's not pleading

  351. for mercy.

  352. There's plenty

  353. of mercy and grace

  354. in Jesus,

  355. don't get me wrong.

  356. But Jesus comes

  357. before His Father

  358. and says,

  359. Father,

  360. give justice.

  361. Give what

  362. must be given now.

  363. 1 John 1

  364. says it, right?

  365. If you confess

  366. your sins,

  367. God is faithful

  368. and just

  369. to forgive

  370. your sins.

  371. He sees Jesus

  372. has already paid

  373. for those sins.

  374. Jesus doesn't have

  375. to say,

  376. Father,

  377. come on,

  378. find it in your heart

  379. to give Him a break.

  380. No, He says,

  381. Father,

  382. give Him

  383. the forgiveness

  384. that I purchased,

  385. that I have earned,

  386. that I have won.

  387. That's what

  388. Romans 3 explains

  389. has been happening

  390. with these sacrifices

  391. and priests

  392. all along.

  393. What's been going on

  394. through the Old Testament

  395. is that

  396. as they bring

  397. all these sacrifices,

  398. God is passing

  399. over sins.

  400. He's passing

  401. over them

  402. until a time

  403. would come

  404. when there was

  405. a perfect sacrifice,

  406. when God

  407. could be just,

  408. He could receive

  409. sin's deserved payment

  410. and at the same time

  411. be the justifier

  412. of those trusting

  413. Jesus' perfect sacrifice.

  414. Friends,

  415. Jesus is our

  416. great high priest,

  417. our qualified representative

  418. because unlike

  419. any other religious leader,

  420. His case

  421. is based on

  422. His perfect sacrifice.

  423. So His prayers

  424. for you

  425. are always heard.

  426. Just like when He

  427. prayed for Peter,

  428. He knew Peter

  429. was going to deny Him.

  430. He prayed that

  431. when Peter fell,

  432. His faith

  433. would not fail.

  434. And God hears.

  435. Pastor Edmund Clowney

  436. tells of a time

  437. he sought out

  438. the holiest,

  439. best prayer

  440. he knew

  441. because he was hurting

  442. deeply.

  443. He found

  444. famed theologian

  445. John Murray

  446. and said,

  447. pray for me,

  448. John.

  449. This is what

  450. he writes.

  451. In a time

  452. of devastating

  453. personal grief

  454. concerning a member

  455. of my family,

  456. I sought John Murray

  457. to request

  458. his prayer.

  459. As John

  460. interceded

  461. for me

  462. and for the

  463. deepest concern

  464. of my heart,

  465. he prayed

  466. with urgency

  467. and strength,

  468. weaving together

  469. passages of Scripture

  470. to form the fabric

  471. of his claim

  472. on the mercy

  473. and promises

  474. of God.

  475. At that moment,

  476. I confess,

  477. I was overwhelmed

  478. with the sheer

  479. blessing

  480. of having

  481. such an intercessor

  482. to take me

  483. before my

  484. heavenly Father.

  485. I think that's

  486. how I used to feel

  487. with Delilah Harris

  488. or Jenny Doss

  489. or your grandmother

  490. when you heard

  491. them praying for you.

  492. He says,

  493. then,

  494. as his prayer

  495. was lifted

  496. to the mercy seat,

  497. he began to thank

  498. the Father

  499. for the mediation

  500. of God's

  501. eternal Son,

  502. the merciful

  503. and faithful

  504. high priest

  505. who ever lives

  506. to make intercession

  507. for us.

  508. Clowney says,

  509. then it came home

  510. to me.

  511. I had a better

  512. intercessor

  513. than John Murray.

  514. Jesus Christ,

  515. my Savior,

  516. prayed for me.

  517. Praise Jesus.

  518. Jesus,

  519. praise for you.

  520. well,

  521. that sounds like

  522. a good representative

  523. to have,

  524. right?

  525. It's a good start.

  526. But how long

  527. will he continue

  528. representing me?

  529. That's a real issue

  530. here in Hebrews

  531. because these

  532. Old Testament priests,

  533. there were a lot

  534. of good ones,

  535. but they all died.

  536. And you had to wonder,

  537. would the next guy

  538. successfully make

  539. the sacrifices?

  540. Would he safely

  541. bring you near to God?

  542. God?

  543. First century

  544. Jewish historian

  545. Josephus

  546. estimates 83

  547. different high priests

  548. from Aaron

  549. until the destruction

  550. of the temple

  551. in 70 A.D.

  552. One after another

  553. after another.

  554. But remember,

  555. Jesus

  556. is a permanent priest.

  557. How?

  558. The power

  559. of an indestructible

  560. life.

  561. Verse 16

  562. told us that.

  563. It's Easter.

  564. It's resurrection,

  565. right?

  566. Verse 24.

  567. But Jesus,

  568. he holds his priesthood

  569. permanently.

  570. Why?

  571. Because he continues

  572. forever.

  573. Verse 25.

  574. He always lives.

  575. There's our

  576. eternal security,

  577. right?

  578. It's in the resurrection.

  579. Jesus has beaten

  580. death

  581. at death's own game.

  582. Hosanna,

  583. save us.

  584. You've conquered

  585. death.

  586. Do it for us.

  587. We never have to wonder

  588. if the next day

  589. or the next failure

  590. will condemn us.

  591. If God's gonna

  592. turn and decide

  593. to give up on us

  594. this time.

  595. No.

  596. Our case is not

  597. based on us.

  598. It's based on the

  599. perfect priest

  600. who is the

  601. forever priest

  602. never dying,

  603. never retiring,

  604. never leaving us,

  605. never sleeping,

  606. never wavering,

  607. never failing

  608. to intercede

  609. for us

  610. no matter where

  611. we find ourselves.

  612. He ever

  613. lives above,

  614. right?

  615. For me to intercede,

  616. his all-redeeming love,

  617. his precious blood

  618. to plead

  619. for every race

  620. at the throne

  621. of grace.

  622. He's there today

  623. if you're wondering

  624. what's Jesus doing?

  625. Why isn't Jesus in church?

  626. He's interceding.

  627. Pastor Andrew Murray

  628. explains what that

  629. means for us,

  630. what that frees us up

  631. to do in our lives

  632. if Jesus is always

  633. interceding.

  634. To come to God

  635. through Christ

  636. means nothing less

  637. than entering

  638. into the holiest

  639. of all,

  640. God's very presence,

  641. and dwelling there

  642. all day,

  643. spending our lives

  644. there,

  645. abiding there

  646. continually.

  647. He's interceding

  648. before God

  649. today and always,

  650. so you live,

  651. you rest,

  652. you abide

  653. before God

  654. today and always.

  655. A priest

  656. with a perfect

  657. sacrifice,

  658. with a permanent,

  659. permanent

  660. service

  661. of intercession.

  662. One more phrase

  663. that I don't want

  664. us to miss.

  665. How effective

  666. is Jesus

  667. at bringing me

  668. to God?

  669. In other words,

  670. if I'm going to hire him,

  671. how often

  672. does this lawyer

  673. win the case

  674. for his client?

  675. verse 25.

  676. Consequently,

  677. Jesus is able

  678. to save

  679. to the uttermost

  680. those who draw

  681. near to God

  682. through him

  683. since he always

  684. lives to make

  685. intercession

  686. for them.

  687. Because he lives

  688. forever,

  689. because he always

  690. lives to make

  691. intercession,

  692. he saves

  693. to the uttermost.

  694. Great word.

  695. Great word,

  696. uttermost.

  697. Don't use it

  698. very often.

  699. It means

  700. from all your sins

  701. at all times

  702. in all ways

  703. Jesus saves.

  704. That's what his name

  705. means.

  706. That's what his father

  707. sent him to do.

  708. It's what he came

  709. to accomplish

  710. on the cross

  711. and in the empty tomb.

  712. And it's important

  713. because you need

  714. to know something

  715. when you're wondering

  716. about how God

  717. feels about you.

  718. When you say,

  719. I've been a Christian

  720. a long time,

  721. but lately,

  722. I'm just really,

  723. I'm really struggling.

  724. I'm really wavering a lot.

  725. I don't feel like

  726. God and I

  727. are doing well.

  728. Jesus didn't,

  729. Jesus didn't make

  730. your salvation

  731. possible.

  732. Jesus made your

  733. salvation real.

  734. Not a possibility,

  735. a reality.

  736. He actually

  737. accomplishes salvation.

  738. He saves

  739. to the uttermost.

  740. Later it says

  741. of his sacrifice,

  742. once for all.

  743. So nothing else

  744. is needed.

  745. This Jesus

  746. is a savior.

  747. He came to seek

  748. and to save the lost.

  749. He is able to save

  750. to the uttermost.

  751. So listen,

  752. what does that mean?

  753. That means there is

  754. no sin

  755. too big for him.

  756. It means there is

  757. no sinner

  758. too bad

  759. for him to save.

  760. There's no offense

  761. too often repeated.

  762. No runaway

  763. too distant.

  764. No situation

  765. too complicated.

  766. No valley

  767. too dark

  768. where the good shepherd

  769. can't find

  770. a lost sheep.

  771. No rebel

  772. too hardened.

  773. No shame

  774. too deep.

  775. No life

  776. too far gone.

  777. But Jesus

  778. saves today

  779. to the uttermost.

  780. All of them.

  781. five bleeding wounds.

  782. Five bleeding wounds

  783. of Jesus

  784. cry,

  785. forgive him.

  786. Who?

  787. Which one?

  788. That one?

  789. Is he too bad?

  790. They cry,

  791. forgive him.

  792. Always.

  793. Always.

  794. Dear friend,

  795. if you're here today

  796. and you are just

  797. kind of exploring Jesus,

  798. maybe seeking,

  799. wondering about Jesus,

  800. not sure

  801. what to think

  802. about him,

  803. I'd urge you

  804. to ask him

  805. to be your

  806. representative,

  807. to intercede

  808. for you.

  809. He loves doing it.

  810. He lives for it.

  811. And he will save you

  812. to the uttermost.

  813. You

  814. and God

  815. completely good

  816. forever

  817. and always

  818. can never be

  819. separated from him.

  820. That's what Jesus

  821. will do for you.

  822. Dear friends

  823. who have trusted

  824. in Jesus

  825. maybe for

  826. most of your life,

  827. won't you today,

  828. as you hear Jesus

  829. praying for you,

  830. leave your life

  831. of self-condemnation,

  832. of half-hearted

  833. distance

  834. from Jesus,

  835. of playing church

  836. occasionally

  837. but feeling like

  838. God's far off.

  839. Leave your life

  840. of sin

  841. that Jesus

  842. has paid for

  843. and remember

  844. that he is

  845. interceding

  846. for you

  847. today.

  848. So God

  849. is not

  850. disappointed.

  851. God is not

  852. disinterested

  853. in you.

  854. Today,

  855. while Jesus

  856. is interceding

  857. as he always

  858. does,

  859. your father

  860. is smiling

  861. on you.

  862. He's delighting

  863. in you

  864. as his perfect

  865. son.

  866. He is welcoming

  867. you home.

  868. Come home,

  869. he says.

  870. Before we close,

  871. I want to remember

  872. why the writer

  873. thinks this is

  874. so important.

  875. Why is he

  876. telling them

  877. about Jesus

  878. as their

  879. greater priest?

  880. Do you remember

  881. the whole letters

  882. about this?

  883. Some of them

  884. in life's

  885. difficulties,

  886. they're in a

  887. tough place

  888. and they're

  889. thinking about

  890. going back

  891. to the Jewish

  892. sacrificial system

  893. with dying

  894. priests

  895. and repeated

  896. sacrifices

  897. and many

  898. regulations.

  899. They're thinking

  900. about that

  901. because they all

  902. know and feel

  903. deeply they need

  904. a representative

  905. before God's

  906. throne.

  907. But they also

  908. know other

  909. options.

  910. They've lived

  911. them.

  912. The spirit

  913. of their age

  914. was to go

  915. back to the

  916. sacrifices.

  917. sacrifices.

  918. That's not

  919. what many

  920. people contemplate

  921. these days.

  922. That you

  923. haven't been

  924. thinking that

  925. during this

  926. sermon.

  927. Maybe I'll

  928. go back

  929. to that.

  930. No.

  931. Instead of

  932. clinging to

  933. this great

  934. representative

  935. before God,

  936. what's the

  937. spirit of our

  938. age?

  939. I think

  940. having lost

  941. a reverent

  942. fear of

  943. God that

  944. makes us

  945. desperately

  946. dependent on

  947. a representative.

  948. The spirit

  949. of our age

  950. is representing

  951. myself.

  952. In fact,

  953. we do it

  954. while we go

  955. to church.

  956. One of the

  957. classic ways

  958. I'll say that

  959. I'll represent

  960. myself is I'll

  961. be moral.

  962. I'll be good

  963. enough for

  964. God to be

  965. okay with

  966. me.

  967. By the way,

  968. that is way

  969. underestimating

  970. His holiness

  971. and our

  972. weakness to

  973. think that

  974. that's how we

  975. could navigate

  976. the relationship.

  977. Others do

  978. the same thing

  979. by saying,

  980. you know,

  981. really all I

  982. need to do

  983. is be true

  984. to myself.

  985. And that

  986. makes me and

  987. whatever God

  988. is out there,

  989. we're fine.

  990. However I

  991. live, as long

  992. as I'm true

  993. to myself.

  994. As much as

  995. it is never

  996. a good idea

  997. to represent

  998. yourself,

  999. is it,

  1000. Barnes?

  1001. this instinct

  1002. is there

  1003. in all

  1004. of us

  1005. to represent

  1006. myself.

  1007. I'll show you

  1008. a version of

  1009. it in my

  1010. own life.

  1011. A couple

  1012. weeks ago,

  1013. Christy asked

  1014. me to do

  1015. something for

  1016. her, not

  1017. anything unusual

  1018. or unreasonable,

  1019. just helping

  1020. out around the

  1021. house.

  1022. But she told

  1023. me how I

  1024. could be

  1025. helpful to

  1026. her and she

  1027. explained how

  1028. she wanted

  1029. it done.

  1030. And I

  1031. listened,

  1032. mostly.

  1033. But I

  1034. kind of

  1035. thought I

  1036. just kind

  1037. of handle

  1038. it my

  1039. own way.

  1040. So when

  1041. it wasn't

  1042. done the

  1043. way that

  1044. she asked,

  1045. she wasn't

  1046. so much

  1047. frustrated at

  1048. how it

  1049. was done,

  1050. she capably

  1051. did it

  1052. better.

  1053. She was

  1054. hurt.

  1055. I didn't

  1056. respect or

  1057. value her.

  1058. I'd

  1059. selfishly

  1060. messed up

  1061. and hurt

  1062. someone that

  1063. I love.

  1064. How's

  1065. I going to

  1066. respond?

  1067. This

  1068. actually,

  1069. you haven't

  1070. seen it

  1071. yet,

  1072. this is

  1073. where you're

  1074. going to

  1075. see the

  1076. self-representation.

  1077. What happens

  1078. in that

  1079. moment for

  1080. me?

  1081. I mount

  1082. my self-defense.

  1083. It's a pretty

  1084. common one.

  1085. There's several

  1086. things I do.

  1087. I call

  1088. character

  1089. witnesses.

  1090. You know,

  1091. just the

  1092. beginning of

  1093. a conversation,

  1094. you know,

  1095. I work in,

  1096. naturally weave

  1097. in the fact

  1098. that this

  1099. happened after

  1100. I was picking

  1101. up the

  1102. girls.

  1103. I'm usually

  1104. pretty helpful,

  1105. that's what

  1106. you're supposed

  1107. to hear.

  1108. Plus,

  1109. there were

  1110. extenuating

  1111. circumstances.

  1112. I had a

  1113. long day

  1114. at work.

  1115. I wasn't

  1116. feeling great.

  1117. There was a

  1118. lot on my

  1119. mind.

  1120. You know,

  1121. that needs

  1122. to be

  1123. included.

  1124. My noble

  1125. intentions.

  1126. Sweetheart,

  1127. I didn't mean

  1128. to hurt you.

  1129. But the

  1130. closing argument

  1131. comes,

  1132. maybe you've

  1133. made this

  1134. one before,

  1135. future

  1136. commitments,

  1137. right?

  1138. Look,

  1139. it won't

  1140. happen again,

  1141. right?

  1142. Of course,

  1143. it won't

  1144. happen again.

  1145. So we're

  1146. okay,

  1147. right?

  1148. You're

  1149. happy with

  1150. me now.

  1151. See how

  1152. I've told

  1153. you how

  1154. good I

  1155. am and

  1156. will be?

  1157. Aren't

  1158. you okay

  1159. now?

  1160. Well,

  1161. that's no

  1162. way to

  1163. live,

  1164. is it?

  1165. Self-representation,

  1166. especially

  1167. if you're

  1168. having to

  1169. draw up

  1170. a defense

  1171. constantly

  1172. to prove

  1173. you're good

  1174. enough,

  1175. not just

  1176. to another

  1177. person,

  1178. but to

  1179. God,

  1180. to the

  1181. one who

  1182. sees

  1183. everything

  1184. that you

  1185. do,

  1186. to the

  1187. one who

  1188. knows

  1189. every

  1190. thought and

  1191. intention

  1192. of your

  1193. heart,

  1194. representing

  1195. yourself to

  1196. him and

  1197. explaining it

  1198. away.

  1199. Can you

  1200. imagine?

  1201. Most of us

  1202. can imagine.

  1203. You know

  1204. what you'll

  1205. do if

  1206. that's the

  1207. way you

  1208. live with

  1209. God?

  1210. I'll tell

  1211. you because

  1212. I've lived

  1213. it.

  1214. You'll

  1215. quit drawing

  1216. near to

  1217. him.

  1218. You will.

  1219. I don't

  1220. know what

  1221. it'll look

  1222. like, but

  1223. you'll quit

  1224. getting close

  1225. because it's

  1226. exhausting.

  1227. It's too

  1228. much work

  1229. to get to

  1230. the place

  1231. where you

  1232. know he's

  1233. okay with

  1234. you, where

  1235. you've

  1236. proven your

  1237. case.

  1238. You'll

  1239. either know

  1240. you're not

  1241. good enough

  1242. or you

  1243. will get

  1244. exhausted

  1245. from trying

  1246. to convince

  1247. yourself that

  1248. you are.

  1249. How about

  1250. this way of

  1251. living with

  1252. him?

  1253. I'm sorry.

  1254. I was

  1255. unthoughtful.

  1256. I hate

  1257. how this

  1258. hurts you

  1259. and our

  1260. relationship.

  1261. Please

  1262. forgive me.

  1263. I have

  1264. nothing.

  1265. I need

  1266. forgiveness.

  1267. Why is it

  1268. so hard

  1269. for me

  1270. to say

  1271. that?

  1272. As a

  1273. husband?

  1274. As a

  1275. child of

  1276. God?

  1277. Because I

  1278. love to

  1279. represent

  1280. myself.

  1281. I want

  1282. to tell

  1283. you,

  1284. Jesus

  1285. loves

  1286. to represent

  1287. you.

  1288. He lives

  1289. to intercede

  1290. for you.

  1291. He's doing

  1292. it today

  1293. and always.

  1294. You can

  1295. count on it.

  1296. You can

  1297. live like

  1298. it's a

  1299. reality.

  1300. Don't

  1301. represent

  1302. yourself.

  1303. Don't

  1304. run back

  1305. to making

  1306. enough of

  1307. the right

  1308. sacrifices.

  1309. You know,

  1310. a few

  1311. Sunday mornings

  1312. at church,

  1313. a couple

  1314. service

  1315. project,

  1316. a few

  1317. bucks

  1318. in the

  1319. plate.

  1320. Yeah,

  1321. God and

  1322. I,

  1323. we're good

  1324. now.

  1325. No,

  1326. no.

  1327. That's

  1328. exhausting.

  1329. Y'all,

  1330. it's also

  1331. ineffective.

  1332. And there

  1333. is a

  1334. greater

  1335. priest

  1336. than that.

  1337. He knows

  1338. your pain.

  1339. He gets

  1340. your temptation.

  1341. He's

  1342. walking

  1343. your shoes

  1344. and

  1345. He's

  1346. holy,

  1347. innocent,

  1348. unstained,

  1349. separated

  1350. from sinners,

  1351. exalted

  1352. above the

  1353. heavens,

  1354. interceding

  1355. in the

  1356. very throne

  1357. room of

  1358. God.

  1359. He's

  1360. praying

  1361. for you

  1362. right now.

  1363. Dear ones,

  1364. run to

  1365. Jesus and

  1366. don't ever

  1367. run away

  1368. from Him.

  1369. Three points

  1370. in a poem.

  1371. That's what a

  1372. sermon is

  1373. supposed to

  1374. be.

  1375. It's not

  1376. usually the

  1377. way I

  1378. go.

  1379. But I

  1380. like this

  1381. poem.

  1382. Martha

  1383. Snell

  1384. Nicholson.

  1385. I can

  1386. relate.

  1387. I think

  1388. probably

  1389. many of

  1390. you can

  1391. too.

  1392. I

  1393. sinned

  1394. and

  1395. straightway

  1396. post-haste

  1397. Satan

  1398. flew before

  1399. the presence

  1400. of the

  1401. Most High

  1402. God

  1403. and made

  1404. a railing

  1405. accusation

  1406. there.

  1407. He said

  1408. this soul,

  1409. this thing

  1410. of clay

  1411. and sod

  1412. has sinned.

  1413. Tis

  1414. true that

  1415. he has

  1416. named

  1417. thy name

  1418. but I

  1419. demand

  1420. his

  1421. death

  1422. for thou

  1423. has said

  1424. the soul

  1425. that sinneth

  1426. it shall

  1427. die.

  1428. Shall not

  1429. thy sentence

  1430. be fulfilled?

  1431. Is justice

  1432. dead?

  1433. Send now

  1434. this wretched

  1435. sinner to

  1436. his doom.

  1437. What other

  1438. thing can

  1439. righteous

  1440. ruler do?

  1441. And thus

  1442. did he accuse

  1443. me day and

  1444. night and

  1445. every word

  1446. he spoke

  1447. oh God

  1448. was true.

  1449. Then quickly

  1450. one rose up

  1451. from God's

  1452. right hand

  1453. before whose

  1454. glory angels

  1455. veiled their

  1456. eyes.

  1457. He spoke

  1458. each

  1459. jot and

  1460. tittle

  1461. of the

  1462. law must

  1463. be fulfilled

  1464. the guilty

  1465. sinner dies.

  1466. But wait

  1467. suppose his

  1468. guilt were

  1469. all transferred

  1470. to me

  1471. and that I

  1472. paid his

  1473. penalty.

  1474. Behold my

  1475. hands

  1476. my side

  1477. my feet

  1478. one day

  1479. I was made

  1480. sin for

  1481. him and

  1482. died that

  1483. he might

  1484. be presented

  1485. faultless

  1486. at thy

  1487. throne.

  1488. And Satan

  1489. fled away.

  1490. Full well

  1491. he knew

  1492. that he

  1493. could not

  1494. prevail against

  1495. such love

  1496. for every

  1497. word my

  1498. dear Lord

  1499. spoke was

  1500. true.

  1501. Jesus

  1502. there you

  1503. stand

  1504. before the

  1505. throne of

  1506. God above

  1507. making our

  1508. strong

  1509. and perfect

  1510. plea.

  1511. How beautiful

  1512. it is to

  1513. us.

  1514. that you

  1515. pray for

  1516. us.

  1517. You

  1518. defend us.

  1519. You plead

  1520. your blood

  1521. for us.

  1522. Praise you

  1523. Jesus for

  1524. your sinless

  1525. life that

  1526. makes us

  1527. beautiful to

  1528. our Father

  1529. clothed in

  1530. your righteousness.

  1531. Praise you

  1532. Jesus for

  1533. your sacrifice

  1534. of yourself

  1535. that washes

  1536. us clean

  1537. from all

  1538. our sins.

  1539. Praise you

  1540. Jesus for

  1541. always living

  1542. to intercede

  1543. for us.

  1544. thank you

  1545. for praying

  1546. for me.

  1547. Would you

  1548. help us even

  1549. this week to

  1550. run and

  1551. cling to your

  1552. cross?

  1553. We're going

  1554. to have it

  1555. before us.

  1556. We're going

  1557. to have

  1558. opportunities.

  1559. Help us

  1560. from the

  1561. depths of

  1562. our hearts

  1563. to see it

  1564. as the

  1565. most needful

  1566. thing in

  1567. our lives

  1568. and the

  1569. most important

  1570. thing of

  1571. all.

  1572. Help us

  1573. to worship

  1574. you for

  1575. your love.

  1576. Help us

  1577. to find

  1578. our hope

  1579. in your

  1580. empty tomb

  1581. and your

  1582. ongoing life

  1583. and your

  1584. intercession

  1585. before the

  1586. throne of

  1587. God.

  1588. Pour out

  1589. your grace

  1590. on us.

  1591. Give us

  1592. joy and

  1593. confidence

  1594. in you.

  1595. Thank you

  1596. for loving

  1597. us.

  1598. We pray

  1599. these prayers

  1600. in your name

  1601. knowing that

  1602. you pray them

  1603. alongside of

  1604. us and we

  1605. give you

  1606. great thanks.

  1607. Amen.
