  1. You are listening to a message from Southwood Presbyterian Church in Huntsville, Alabama.

  2. ! Our passion is to experience and express grace. Join us.

  3. Y'all, that is glorious truth being sung, isn't it? Can you imagine if something like that was

  4. true and it didn't make any difference in your life? Wouldn't that be really strange?

  5. That's actually what we're encountering this morning in Hebrews, is that glorious truth,

  6. like what he just sang, changes us. And it must, and it has to. It's one of the most important

  7. patterns in the Bible that we run into this morning. Over and over in the Scriptures,

  8. we're told what's true and then what to do. Or you might say what to believe and then how to behave.

  9. Or the amazing reality and the necessary result of it, right? You get that pattern? It's really

  10. important to remember that pattern for two reasons, really. To keep those two things connected

  11. and in the right order. In other words, that how we live is actually based on what is true about the

  12. world, not just how we feel, keeping them connected, right? And also, that our obedience, the way we live,

  13. is a response to God's glory and grace. Not a way to earn that. Keeping them in the right order.

  14. So the preacher in Hebrews has, for 10 chapters, spilled a lot of ink and blood, you might say,

  15. teaching us how great Jesus is. The first half of chapter 10 summarized that truth. Greater priest,

  16. greater sacrifice, greater savior. And now this morning, he says, therefore. Therefore. A summary now

  17. of how that great Jesus must transform our lives. It's not just theoretically true, but no one should

  18. really care. No, it's actually true. It's ultimately real and everybody should be changed by it. That's what

  19. he's saying. We're going to read this passage as we go. But first, let's pray and ask for God's help.

  20. God, we are so often resistant to change. You know I am. Especially change that's coming from outside of us.

  21. That's not our idea. I just, I so want to do things my way. I want to have my life shaped the way I'm

  22. most comfortable. Father, this morning we ask, we long for our lives to be shaped more by your word,

  23. by your spirit, by your gospel, than anything else. And so if that's going to happen, we need,

  24. we need your help. We need you to speak to us so we hear your voice. We need you to work in our hearts.

  25. We need you to change our lives moment by moment and day by day. So speak to us now, we ask for Jesus' sake

  26. and by his name. Amen.

  27. Hebrews 10 verse 19.

    Hebrews 10:19

  28. Therefore, brothers and sisters, addressing the whole family of God here, of course,

  29. since, since, since, a quick review of the basis of our transformed life before he gets back to his

  30. therefore, okay? What's true? Since we have confidence to enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus,

  31. walking into God's throne room where we have no right to be on our own. We couldn't get there.

  32. By the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain, that is, through his flesh,

  33. that curtain that kept people out of God's holy place, is torn in two from top to bottom

  34. while Jesus hangs on the cross, his body being torn, right?

  35. And since we have a great priest over the house of God,

  36. Jesus is our perfect representative before God for everyone who trusts in him.

  37. Since that's true, don't, don't, in other words, don't start thinking you can change your own

  38. relationship with God. Just do it by yourself. Not that. But on the basis of Jesus' work for you,

  39. your union with Jesus by faith, don't by any means leave your relationship with God unchanged.

  40. That's what he's saying. If you were to do that, if you were to hear this glorious truth and see no

  41. change in your life, that would be ignoring Jesus' amazing work, his sacrifice, his living, loving reign

  42. today. No, no. Jesus transforms our lives. He makes a difference. So since all of that that he's been

  43. teaching us about Jesus being new and better and greater, since all of those things are true,

  44. so what for us? The main thrust of this text is actually in these next four verses.

  45. If you start looking at them, these next four verses have enough lettuce in it to make what theologians

  46. refer to as a Greek salad. That's pretty good. Okay. I thought I'd have to explain it to you,

  47. but thanks for hanging with me. All right. Got that one out of the way. Here's our focus, right? Here's

  48. the focus, the essence of a transformed life. What's it going to look like? How we're to live differently

  49. after studying Hebrews. It's been a long time for some of you. Therefore, verse 22, let us draw near.

  50. Draw near to God. Now, if you've been here, we've heard that before, right? This is a summary in many

  51. ways. Verse 22, draw near to God with a true heart, not by mere outward conformity to some rules or by

  52. completing some religious rituals to get close to God. No, no, no, no, no. The genuine closeness of your

  53. heart relationship with him. In full assurance of faith, trusting him that the welcome he extends is

  54. sincere. The invitation is not merely optional. Draw near with our hearts sprinkled clean from an

  55. evil conscience. No more guilt, no more guilt, no more sin. It's been forgiven. And our bodies washed

  56. with pure water, whether through baptism or other cleansing rites. The picture is that we stand clean

  57. before a holy God by the blood of Jesus. So if you're listening, it's a command. Let us draw near.

  58. Not merely a statement that you can come before God. We've heard that. We know that's true. But actually,

  59. a call to draw near. Really to live under the desk. Truly to speak freely to your Father about what's on

  60. your heart. He's saying here, don't let anything keep you from God. Not doubt, not fear, not shame,

  61. not sin. Don't let it stop you. Run to God. Can you imagine how transformative that would be for someone,

  62. an Old Testament believer? Who they've been told and they've seen and felt in the tabernacle and temple

  63. that they can't really get close to God, especially when they're unclean or unworthy. They need to be

  64. really far away, right? This is transformative. How transformative is this for us who often feel

  65. distant from God? Who think we couldn't possibly be good enough? What he's saying is,

  66. now live in an entirely different location, a relationship with God. That's what needs to

  67. change the way you live. See, this morning, I want us to notice that sometimes what happens to us

  68. is that life changes and that changes our relationship with God. Life changes and that speaks back into how we

  69. experience our relationship with God. No, no, no. We want it to be the other way around, letting our new

  70. relationship with God transform our lives, right? I mean, just think about how life changes when trials

  71. start to make God feel to you. And that moment, if you're like me, you really like feeling comfortable and

  72. getting close to God doesn't really feel like that maybe. And so you just, you start avoiding him,

  73. avoiding time with him. It's more comfortable not to think about it. And he's calling you back right

  74. now. Draw near. He said, no, don't drift away. Draw near. Maybe life changes when you have kids.

  75. Having kids change anybody's life? Okay. We'll just take laughter as a show of hands.

  76. But you have kids and you think, I'm going to bring them to church because you think that there's

  77. something there that they need God or morality or something that you think you're really too grown up

  78. for. And so you bring them near to God while staying distant to yourself, even in the sanctuary.

  79. And God calls you back right now. No, no, you. You draw near. Draw near. What happens when you do?

  80. Pastor Andrew Murray helped me start thinking about what it's like to actually live your life

  81. always near God. Feeling like no matter where you go, you are in the throne room of heaven. God is

  82. right there with you. What does that mean for our lives as we slow down to remember Jesus has actually

  83. brought us in near to God? I'd encourage you to close your eyes for a minute and imagine that that's

  84. where you're right there near to God. You're right there with him because of Jesus bringing you right

  85. there to his feet. What's true? You can see the Father's face shining on you. You can feel the Father's

  86. love embracing you. The holiness of God begins to overwhelm you and at the same time attract you.

  87. You're there with Jesus and the sacrifice of Jesus stirs unending thanksgiving in your heart.

  88. The prayers of Jesus, you can hear them and they're building this unending confidence in you.

  89. Our souls are not merely united to Christ a little bit. They're completely connected to him and being

  90. conformed more and more to his likeness. There's a comfort of God's presence that assures us that

  91. we're never alone. The Holy Spirit fills us as an ever-streaming river flowing from the throne of God

  92. and the Lamb right to us. So we're empowered and emboldened to be intercessors before the throne of

  93. grace on behalf of others. We're able to mount up as on eagle's wings when we're weary. We're able to go

  94. as God's priest to bless a dying world in his name. The longer we stay there with him and know that

  95. God's with us, the more we're equipped and encouraged to be the living instruments through

  96. whom the King announces his salvation and through whom he works out his full and final triumph in this

  97. whole world. And we're a part of that. And we're there with God and we taste in him the fullness of joy

  98. and deep pleasures forever. And it's not just right now when you're in a sanctuary listening to a sermon.

  99. It's all the time whenever we will actually draw near to God. Let us draw near to God, he says.

  100. Next, let us hold fast. It's another repeated exhortation in Hebrews. Don't drift. Don't give up. Don't turn

  101. back. We have a sure and steadfast anchor for our souls. Hold fast the confession of our hope.

  102. Like what we confessed together this morning in the Apostles' Creed. That Jesus really is greater.

  103. That he alone is Lord. That our present and our future are secure. Our sins are forgiven. Our welcome

  104. is guaranteed. So hold fast. What does he say? Without wavering. For he who promised is faithful.

  105. There's a verse for you to memorize if you want one this week. It's short.

  106. Hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering. For he who promised is faithful. He's saying

  107. don't give up on the only one that you can always trust. You do that and it will leave you unmoored

  108. in life from any anchor. Right? You'll be wavering back and forth for the rest of your life

  109. because the truth is you're not perfect. The truth is other people are unreliable.

  110. The truth is that the future without your anchor becomes uncertain. You don't know where you'll

  111. end up. Life changes. Maybe life is changing and you're realizing for the first time in your life

  112. your faith in Jesus is costing you something. Maybe not your very life like believers in some areas

  113. right now. But maybe it's costing you your reputation. A friendship. A control of all your spare time

  114. that seems so precious. Or maybe what's changing is that you're starting to see other people with

  115. more things than you. More connections. More fun it seems than you're having. And you feel your heart is

  116. attached to the things of this world more than you realized. More than you wanted to admit.

  117. And you're starting to drift there. You're starting to think that's where I'll find life. And God says

  118. to hold fast. Hold fast to the promises of the one true and living God. How transformative will they be

  119. from living for the fading promises of this world that don't hold. Rushing and grasping to be fulfilled

  120. by a new house or a new hobby or a new relationship. Is that where I'm going to find life? Is that going to

  121. last? It says he's faithful. He will come through. He'll never change his mind. So your hope in Jesus is

  122. eternally secure. Listen, Jesus died and lives for you. No one and nothing else in this world has done that

  123. or will do that. He has died for you. He lives for you now. Life in him really is more glorious,

  124. more lasting than anything else. Draw near to God and hold fast to him.

  125. Now the third let us is new. So let's slow down a little more here.

  126. Verse 24.

  127. And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works.

  128. Let us stir up.

  129. Fits better with draw near and hold fast.

  130. But if you're looking closely at the text, the command actually tells us to do what?

  131. Let us consider.

  132. Let us contemplate.

  133. Think about. Spend time planning.

  134. How to stir up

  135. other people.

  136. That's kind of exciting, right?

  137. Don't you know we need more pot stirrers here at Southwood?

  138. Some of you would volunteer to serve on that committee, wouldn't you?

  139. The Southwood Pot Stirrers Committee.

  140. Man, that is the one for me right there.

  141. I'm not commending gossip

  142. or controversy

  143. or quarreling.

  144. You know that.

  145. But sometimes we need to be stirred up a little bit,

  146. don't we?

  147. To stir up is often

  148. a bit uncomfortable,

  149. even painful.

  150. Maybe in the translation you're holding,

  151. you're seeing that word translated as spur on.

  152. The picture is of a horse, right?

  153. Who's just standing there until there's metal jabbed into his sides

  154. and he jolts into action, right?

  155. The spurs do something.

  156. The pain motivates

  157. action.

  158. We are to stir one another up to what?

  159. Love and good works.

  160. Motivate to loving God and loving neighbor.

  161. Inspire to living the reality of our new relationship with God.

  162. Not just talk about it some,

  163. but come on,

  164. let's let this change everything.

  165. Notice the communal nature in that, right?

  166. He doesn't merely say,

  167. hey, just get on with it.

  168. Let us love and serve.

  169. Is that what he says?

  170. No.

  171. He says,

  172. no.

  173. No.

  174. He says,

  175. let us consider one another.

  176. He urges us to look around,

  177. to help one another toward this.

  178. And y'all know as well as I do,

  179. that kind of community,

  180. that's an extra hurdle

  181. for ruggedly individualistic Americans.

  182. We'd rather just get the job done.

  183. He says,

  184. that's not the way I've set it up.

  185. I want you to look around

  186. and I want you to help someone else be a part of it.

  187. There's,

  188. in fact,

  189. a specific caution about losing community.

  190. Verse 25,

  191. not neglecting to meet together,

  192. as is the habit of some,

  193. already then,

  194. that early,

  195. but encouraging one another.

  196. Now,

  197. y'all have heard this verse.

  198. Sometimes we use this verse

  199. merely to make people feel bad

  200. about skipping Sunday morning.

  201. And you can't really do that

  202. while they're already here.

  203. So,

  204. you know,

  205. skip over that.

  206. It is not less than

  207. worshiping together

  208. in the sanctuary

  209. that should be a priority.

  210. Our hearts

  211. and others' hearts

  212. are helped

  213. to draw near

  214. and hold fast

  215. by regular

  216. Lord's Day

  217. worship rhythms.

  218. The gift of that

  219. that so many

  220. treat so lightly

  221. these days.

  222. It is a warning

  223. against that.

  224. But the word here

  225. in this context

  226. goes beyond

  227. merely this formal gathering.

  228. These Christians,

  229. we know,

  230. were gathering

  231. day by day

  232. in one another's homes

  233. in contexts

  234. where encouraging

  235. one another

  236. was intentionally fostered.

  237. See,

  238. it's really talking

  239. about what we would refer to

  240. as grace group

  241. level community.

  242. That it,

  243. that that is characterizing

  244. all of your life,

  245. not just a meeting

  246. once or twice

  247. a week.

  248. Notice,

  249. it doesn't

  250. contrast

  251. giving up

  252. meeting together

  253. with

  254. sitting in a pew

  255. on Sunday.

  256. That's,

  257. that's not the two things.

  258. What's it contrasting

  259. not meeting together

  260. instead of that?

  261. It's contrasted

  262. with encouraging

  263. one another.

  264. Right?

  265. There's a relational

  266. dynamic coming

  267. alongside

  268. to urge on

  269. your brothers and sisters,

  270. cheering for them

  271. as they face

  272. life's challenges.

  273. So yes,

  274. this verse

  275. tells us

  276. don't leave a church

  277. when you're rubbing

  278. against one another.

  279. When her politics

  280. or his personality

  281. or their parenting

  282. rubs you the wrong way.

  283. Now,

  284. it doesn't mean you go

  285. quit being a part

  286. of that church.

  287. but beyond that,

  288. it is calling us

  289. to be the church

  290. together.

  291. And see,

  292. there's a big difference

  293. here I want to tease out

  294. for just a minute

  295. in how we view

  296. church

  297. being a part of that.

  298. Is church a place?

  299. An event?

  300. Or people?

  301. You may know the answer

  302. but think about that

  303. honestly in your life

  304. and the way you live.

  305. If functionally

  306. church is a place

  307. then we go to church.

  308. I don't mind the phrase,

  309. I've been saying it

  310. since I was a kid.

  311. If that's true,

  312. then adding an educational

  313. wing on the side

  314. is building the church.

  315. If that's true,

  316. then you can expect

  317. to see these new members

  318. who were down here

  319. this morning

  320. a few more times

  321. when you're all

  322. in the same room

  323. when you go to church.

  324. But that's it.

  325. What if church

  326. is an event

  327. or events to you?

  328. Maybe you love

  329. being a part

  330. of church events.

  331. Well,

  332. then we attend church

  333. or do church

  334. in those moments

  335. when there's something

  336. on the calendar.

  337. And then your job

  338. then would be

  339. to make sure

  340. that you show up enough

  341. to make God happy

  342. or maybe make your spouse happy,

  343. whatever the case may be.

  344. Maybe you do show up

  345. to a grace group meeting

  346. and if one of these

  347. new members

  348. happens to be there,

  349. then you'll probably

  350. learn their names

  351. and some basic info

  352. about them

  353. because otherwise,

  354. if you don't,

  355. the events are awkward.

  356. Right?

  357. And it's weird

  358. to introduce yourself

  359. to the same guy

  360. ten times.

  361. So you get to know

  362. him a little bit.

  363. Now let me be clear,

  364. there is actually

  365. some encouragement

  366. from just being together.

  367. Period.

  368. In a place,

  369. at an event,

  370. especially when life

  371. is hard

  372. and you're just

  373. showing up.

  374. But think about

  375. the difference

  376. if church is people.

  377. Encourage one another.

  378. That means church

  379. is relationships.

  380. There's something,

  381. there's a building

  382. of community,

  383. really a family

  384. that's built then.

  385. When's the church built?

  386. It's built,

  387. for example,

  388. when someone is baptized.

  389. And we delight in that

  390. and say,

  391. oh, the church

  392. is being built.

  393. Right now,

  394. that's when the church

  395. is built.

  396. It means I'm expecting

  397. to have at least

  398. some of these new members

  399. at some point

  400. in the future

  401. praying with me

  402. for our kids,

  403. perhaps through tears.

  404. To expect that

  405. some of us

  406. will be comforting

  407. one another

  408. with the hope of heaven

  409. when we grieve

  410. because we're not a family.

  411. That some of us

  412. will be challenging

  413. one another

  414. to share the good news

  415. of Jesus

  416. with our neighbors

  417. and inviting them

  418. into the family

  419. as well.

  420. You see how life

  421. becomes different

  422. if church is the relationships,

  423. the community,

  424. the people.

  425. Actually,

  426. not just an answer

  427. you could give on a test

  428. but in your life.

  429. Can you be honest

  430. about what church

  431. has meant

  432. to you?

  433. See,

  434. the writer here

  435. is concerned,

  436. yes,

  437. with those who

  438. aren't showing up.

  439. That's true.

  440. But he's especially

  441. concerned with

  442. those of us

  443. who are around,

  444. who are present

  445. to hear,

  446. for example,

  447. God's word

  448. being read to them

  449. as the church

  450. is gathered.

  451. Those are the ones

  452. he's speaking to,

  453. to us.

  454. And he's concerned

  455. that there would be

  456. those of us

  457. who don't call

  458. those who quit

  459. showing up

  460. at Grace Group

  461. for a season

  462. and just say,

  463. somebody else

  464. will check on them.

  465. He's concerned

  466. about us

  467. that we don't

  468. thank those

  469. who've started

  470. to drift

  471. for all the time

  472. they've been investing

  473. leading a small group

  474. for our kids.

  475. He's concerned

  476. that there are

  477. those of us

  478. who are here

  479. in the church

  480. but not living

  481. as the church

  482. and seeking out

  483. the hurting

  484. for dinner

  485. or coffee.

  486. He's concerned

  487. about us.

  488. I want you to think

  489. right now

  490. of someone

  491. in your church family

  492. even if this is not

  493. your church family.

  494. That you could

  495. encourage.

  496. Maybe

  497. if the relationship

  498. is close enough

  499. you could even

  500. stir him up.

  501. Tell him the gifts

  502. you see in him

  503. and how you think

  504. we really need him

  505. to serve as a deacon.

  506. Tell her the heart

  507. that you see in her

  508. and how you think

  509. she would be a great

  510. Grace Group leader

  511. and help even more

  512. people have a place

  513. to connect in the family

  514. and grow together.

  515. Tell them that you'd like

  516. to bring them dinner

  517. and sit down

  518. and listen to their

  519. journey with Jesus

  520. and get to rejoice

  521. in his love together

  522. and learn more

  523. about walking

  524. with him

  525. or tell them

  526. you'd like to go

  527. on a missions trip

  528. together with them

  529. to visit one of our

  530. partners next year

  531. and spread that

  532. encouragement even further.

  533. Whatever it is

  534. you can make up

  535. your own idea

  536. but would you write

  537. a name down?

  538. Would you think

  539. of someone

  540. you've got to

  541. if you need ideas

  542. just you know

  543. put your head

  544. on a swivel.

  545. There's people around

  546. some of you in the front

  547. might really have to

  548. turn around

  549. if you need help?

  550. Maybe just picturing

  551. people you know

  552. aren't here

  553. would help you

  554. who especially

  555. need your encouragement.

  556. Because see

  557. what can happen

  558. is that life changes

  559. and we don't even realize

  560. that it changes

  561. our relationship

  562. with God.

  563. Maybe life's changing

  564. you're a senior

  565. about to graduate

  566. and leave home

  567. for the first time

  568. and you're going to

  569. have a chance

  570. to set your own agenda

  571. and new relationships.

  572. Don't give up

  573. meeting together.

  574. Maybe life's changing

  575. and you're a retiree now

  576. and you've heard it all

  577. at church honestly.

  578. You've heard this sermon

  579. before.

  580. You're already starting

  581. to check out.

  582. Can't I just use

  583. my extra time

  584. to travel?

  585. I mean to do my stuff?

  586. Haven't I earned it?

  587. Please don't give up

  588. meeting together.

  589. We need you

  590. and you need us.

  591. Or maybe you're anywhere

  592. in between

  593. those two stages

  594. and you're just

  595. so busy

  596. with so much

  597. important stuff.

  598. But if you're honest

  599. what you're thinking

  600. is there's nothing

  601. I could give up.

  602. I've had to put

  603. my true friendships

  604. on the shelf

  605. for a season.

  606. There's just no time

  607. to invest in them.

  608. We've got too much

  609. going on.

  610. Friends don't wait

  611. to pick them back up.

  612. Don't give up

  613. meeting together.

  614. Instead

  615. let the reality

  616. of Jesus

  617. change your life.

  618. How transformative

  619. this is

  620. from our self-consumed

  621. society

  622. walking around

  623. with my head

  624. and my phone

  625. and my heart

  626. focused only on myself.

  627. He's saying

  628. no, no, no, no.

  629. Lift your eyes up.

  630. Consider

  631. one another

  632. it says.

  633. How to stir

  634. one another up.

  635. Don't leave

  636. the team

  637. when the game's

  638. on the line.

  639. See the day

  640. is drawing near.

  641. The day

  642. when Jesus

  643. returns

  644. to bring us

  645. home forever

  646. and so we've

  647. got to encourage

  648. one another

  649. to draw near

  650. and to hold fast

  651. until that day.

  652. We've got to

  653. stir one another up

  654. to invite others

  655. into the throne

  656. of God

  657. through Jesus.

  658. We're a family

  659. all on a mission

  660. treasuring

  661. and pointing

  662. to Jesus.

  663. That's what we're up to.

  664. That's what the church

  665. is supposed to be.

  666. Now I know

  667. I have a tendency

  668. of communicating

  669. in a way

  670. that you hear

  671. something

  672. very

  673. pleasant

  674. like

  675. do this

  676. if you like

  677. when it works

  678. for you

  679. if you think

  680. that's a good idea

  681. I know that's

  682. more my personality.

  683. If that's what

  684. you hear

  685. this morning

  686. I'm not

  687. helping you

  688. hear God's voice.

  689. that's not the way

  690. he's communicating.

  691. There is an

  692. urgency

  693. the urgency

  694. of eternity

  695. as the day

  696. is drawing near

  697. that is connected

  698. to these three

  699. primary commands

  700. to see your life

  701. transformed

  702. so that you

  703. draw near

  704. hold fast

  705. and stir up.

  706. Verse 26

  707. for

  708. we must

  709. do these things

  710. because

  711. warning

  712. for

  713. if we go

  714. on sinning

  715. deliberately

  716. after receiving

  717. the knowledge

  718. of the truth

  719. there no longer

  720. remains a

  721. sacrifice

  722. for sins.

  723. In other words

  724. if you willfully

  725. neglect

  726. Jesus' sacrifice

  727. and walk away

  728. from it

  729. there is no

  730. other sacrifice

  731. for sins.

  732. Nothing else

  733. will reconcile

  734. you to the

  735. holy God

  736. but a fearful

  737. expectation

  738. of judgment

  739. and a fury

  740. of fire

  741. that will

  742. consume

  743. the adversaries.

  744. Anyone who

  745. has set aside

  746. the law

  747. of Moses

  748. dies without

  749. mercy

  750. on the evidence

  751. of two or three

  752. witnesses.

  753. How much

  754. worse punishment

  755. do you think

  756. will be deserved

  757. by the one

  758. who has spurned

  759. the Son of God

  760. and has profaned

  761. the blood

  762. of the covenant

  763. by which he was

  764. sanctified

  765. and has outraged

  766. the spirit

  767. of grace?

  768. He's saying

  769. if people

  770. were punished

  771. for ignoring

  772. God's word

  773. through Moses

  774. what about

  775. the greater

  776. word sent

  777. through Jesus

  778. right?

  779. How shall we

  780. escape

  781. if we ignore

  782. such a great

  783. salvation?

  784. You're starting

  785. to feel

  786. the seriousness

  787. of this warning?

  788. For we know

  789. him who said

  790. vengeance is mine

  791. I will repay

  792. and again

  793. the Lord

  794. will judge

  795. his people

  796. it is a fearful

  797. thing to fall

  798. into the hands

  799. of the living

  800. God.

  801. You're hearing

  802. it now.

  803. This is one

  804. of many passages

  805. asserting

  806. as our mission

  807. says

  808. that our

  809. relationships

  810. impact

  811. eternity.

  812. Are you

  813. pursuing

  814. the wandering?

  815. Are you

  816. clinging

  817. to the anchor

  818. and building

  819. a chain

  820. to reel

  821. the drifting

  822. one back

  823. in?

  824. Are you

  825. encouraging

  826. especially

  827. the brothers

  828. and sisters

  829. you've committed

  830. to in a

  831. grace group

  832. in your

  833. neighborhood

  834. or at school

  835. together

  836. let's draw

  837. near

  838. let's hold

  839. fast

  840. are you

  841. not just

  842. there

  843. but you're

  844. you're moving

  845. into their

  846. lives

  847. my brother

  848. Bob calls

  849. this rejecting

  850. isolation

  851. because God's

  852. word here

  853. tells us

  854. being isolated

  855. before

  856. one another

  857. without community

  858. is dangerous

  859. because being

  860. isolated

  861. before God

  862. without Jesus

  863. is deadly

  864. being isolated

  865. before one

  866. another

  867. being without

  868. community

  869. is dangerous

  870. because being

  871. isolated

  872. before God

  873. without Jesus

  874. is deadly

  875. eternity

  876. hangs

  877. in the

  878. balance

  879. of how

  880. we handle

  881. these

  882. requests

  883. of our

  884. hearts

  885. and lives

  886. don't treat

  887. his death

  888. so lightly

  889. as to stay

  890. distant from

  891. God

  892. or his

  893. people

  894. to treat

  895. what Jesus

  896. has done

  897. so lightly

  898. that you

  899. start believing

  900. your own

  901. press

  902. that you're

  903. okay on

  904. your own

  905. to quit

  906. caring about

  907. other people

  908. for whom

  909. he has shed

  910. his blood

  911. no

  912. instead

  913. verse 32

  914. but recall

  915. the former

  916. days

  917. when after

  918. you were

  919. enlightened

  920. you endured

  921. a hard

  922. struggle

  923. with sufferings

  924. sometimes

  925. being publicly

  926. exposed

  927. to reproach

  928. and affliction

  929. and sometimes

  930. being partners

  931. with those

  932. so treated

  933. for you

  934. had compassion

  935. on those

  936. in prison

  937. and you

  938. joyfully

  939. accepted

  940. the plundering

  941. of your

  942. property

  943. since you

  944. knew that

  945. you yourselves

  946. had a better

  947. possession

  948. and an abiding

  949. one

  950. I remember

  951. when I was

  952. 18 and

  953. ready to

  954. win a

  955. secular

  956. college

  957. campus

  958. for Jesus

  959. no matter

  960. what happened

  961. what they

  962. thought of me

  963. or what it

  964. cost me

  965. maybe you've

  966. gone without

  967. to see God's

  968. kingdom

  969. supported

  970. and advanced

  971. praying

  972. for persecuted

  973. brothers and

  974. sisters

  975. like their

  976. lives

  977. depended

  978. on it

  979. let goods

  980. and kindred

  981. go

  982. this mortal

  983. life also

  984. the body

  985. they may

  986. kill

  987. God's

  988. truth

  989. abideth

  990. still

  991. his

  992. kingdom

  993. is

  994. forever

  995. forever

  996. so look

  997. back

  998. and remember

  999. that zeal

  1000. for what

  1001. really matters

  1002. that you

  1003. once had

  1004. and then

  1005. look forward

  1006. in light

  1007. of eternity

  1008. with confident

  1009. hope

  1010. verse 35

  1011. therefore do not

  1012. throw away

  1013. your confidence

  1014. which has a

  1015. great

  1016. reward

  1017. God will

  1018. come

  1019. through

  1020. for you

  1021. have need

  1022. of endurance

  1023. so that when

  1024. you have done

  1025. the will

  1026. of God

  1027. you may

  1028. receive

  1029. what is

  1030. promised

  1031. what's the

  1032. promise

  1033. it's the

  1034. coming

  1035. of the

  1036. Messiah

  1037. it's

  1038. this

  1039. person

  1040. who's

  1041. going

  1042. to

  1043. come

  1044. in

  1045. judgment

  1046. yes

  1047. but also

  1048. in

  1049. promised

  1050. reward

  1051. for yet

  1052. a little

  1053. while

  1054. and the

  1055. coming

  1056. one

  1057. will

  1058. come

  1059. and will

  1060. not

  1061. delay

  1062. but my

  1063. righteous

  1064. one

  1065. shall

  1066. live

  1067. by

  1068. faith

  1069. and if

  1070. he

  1071. shrinks

  1072. back

  1073. my soul

  1074. has no

  1075. pleasure

  1076. in him

  1077. but we

  1078. are not

  1079. of those

  1080. who shrink

  1081. back

  1082. and are

  1083. destroyed

  1084. but of

  1085. those

  1086. who have

  1087. faith

  1088. and preserve

  1089. their souls

  1090. he's got

  1091. much to say

  1092. about faith

  1093. but that's

  1094. next week

  1095. in the

  1096. meantime

  1097. don't forget

  1098. we're all

  1099. so capable

  1100. of neglecting

  1101. our relationship

  1102. with God

  1103. neglecting our

  1104. relationships

  1105. with one

  1106. another

  1107. along the

  1108. way

  1109. don't shrink

  1110. back

  1111. instead

  1112. in light

  1113. of what

  1114. Jesus

  1115. has come

  1116. and accomplished

  1117. for us

  1118. in light

  1119. of what

  1120. Jesus

  1121. is coming

  1122. again

  1123. to accomplish

  1124. for us

  1125. draw near

  1126. to God

  1127. hold fast

  1128. to Jesus

  1129. stir up

  1130. one another

  1131. I want us

  1132. to consider

  1133. that at the

  1134. Lord's table

  1135. as well

  1136. this morning

  1137. let's start

  1138. by remembering

  1139. what's true

  1140. what it's

  1141. all about

  1142. what's true

  1143. is that the

  1144. Lord Jesus

  1145. the night

  1146. he was

  1147. betrayed

  1148. took bread

  1149. he broke

  1150. it

  1151. and he gave

  1152. it to his

  1153. disciples

  1154. as I

  1155. ministering

  1156. in his

  1157. name

  1158. give this

  1159. bread

  1160. to you

  1161. he said

  1162. take and

  1163. eat

  1164. this is

  1165. my body

  1166. given

  1167. for you

  1168. do this

  1169. in remembrance

  1170. of me

  1171. in the same

  1172. way after

  1173. supper

  1174. he took

  1175. the cup

  1176. and said

  1177. this cup

  1178. is the

  1179. new covenant

  1180. in my

  1181. blood

  1182. shed for

  1183. many

  1184. for the

  1185. forgiveness

  1186. of sins

  1187. drink from

  1188. it all

  1189. of you

  1190. for as

  1191. often as

  1192. you eat

  1193. this bread

  1194. and drink

  1195. this cup

  1196. you proclaim

  1197. his death

  1198. until he

  1199. comes

  1200. that's

  1201. what's

  1202. true

  1203. if Jesus

  1204. is not

  1205. your hope

  1206. this morning

  1207. you don't

  1208. need to

  1209. leave

  1210. just because

  1211. you're not

  1212. taking the

  1213. bread and

  1214. the wine

  1215. we're glad

  1216. you're here

  1217. and we would

  1218. welcome you

  1219. to observe

  1220. with us

  1221. to ask

  1222. questions

  1223. about this

  1224. Jesus

  1225. and the hope

  1226. that he offers

  1227. we'd love

  1228. to talk

  1229. with you

  1230. about him

  1231. but if

  1232. Jesus is

  1233. yours

  1234. by faith

  1235. what's

  1236. true

  1237. is that

  1238. all who

  1239. come to

  1240. this table

  1241. are

  1242. undeserving

  1243. and he's

  1244. the one

  1245. who brings

  1246. us in

  1247. what's

  1248. true

  1249. is that

  1250. every one

  1251. of us

  1252. as we

  1253. come

  1254. doesn't

  1255. come

  1256. alone

  1257. but comes

  1258. in a

  1259. family

  1260. that Jesus

  1261. has brought

  1262. you into

  1263. by his

  1264. blood

  1265. he's given

  1266. you a new

  1267. father

  1268. and so

  1269. many many

  1270. new brothers

  1271. and sisters

  1272. if those

  1273. are the

  1274. things

  1275. that are

  1276. true

  1277. what should

  1278. we do

  1279. even in

  1280. the next

  1281. few minutes

  1282. while we're

  1283. celebrating

  1284. this sacrament

  1285. I want to

  1286. give you

  1287. three good

  1288. things that

  1289. you can

  1290. do

  1291. don't just

  1292. sit there

  1293. at least

  1294. pick one

  1295. of them

  1296. okay

  1297. draw near

  1298. you can

  1299. draw near

  1300. come and

  1301. eat with

  1302. God

  1303. and pray

  1304. to experience

  1305. his presence

  1306. with you

  1307. today

  1308. it's a

  1309. great thing

  1310. to do

  1311. hold

  1312. fast

  1313. as you

  1314. contemplate

  1315. the sacrifice

  1316. of Jesus

  1317. and as you

  1318. remember

  1319. that he

  1320. died

  1321. for your

  1322. sins

  1323. personally

  1324. have your

  1325. faith built

  1326. in him

  1327. hold

  1328. fast

  1329. to him

  1330. those are

  1331. two things

  1332. that I think

  1333. you're used

  1334. to doing

  1335. when we

  1336. celebrate

  1337. the Lord's

  1338. Supper

  1339. here regularly

  1340. draw near

  1341. hold fast

  1342. there's a

  1343. third that

  1344. may feel

  1345. a little bit

  1346. different

  1347. this morning

  1348. but I'm

  1349. encouraging

  1350. us

  1351. towards that

  1352. I want

  1353. to give

  1354. you permission

  1355. to talk

  1356. to one

  1357. another

  1358. while we

  1359. have the

  1360. Lord's

  1361. Supper

  1362. you already

  1363. had it

  1364. if you

  1365. didn't

  1366. know that

  1367. but I'd

  1368. like you

  1369. to stir

  1370. up

  1371. one another

  1372. this morning

  1373. talk

  1374. maybe before

  1375. or after

  1376. it's your

  1377. turn to

  1378. come forward

  1379. and you

  1380. would like

  1381. to take

  1382. a moment

  1383. to draw

  1384. near

  1385. and hold

  1386. fast

  1387. please don't

  1388. feel awkward

  1389. about that

  1390. there's going

  1391. to be a little

  1392. bit of music

  1393. playing

  1394. it'll cover

  1395. you don't

  1396. have to be

  1397. boisterous

  1398. like it's

  1399. meet and greet

  1400. time

  1401. but you can

  1402. walk all the

  1403. way across

  1404. the sanctuary

  1405. if you

  1406. want to

  1407. what I

  1408. have in

  1409. mind is

  1410. that you're

  1411. going to be

  1412. looking around

  1413. at brothers

  1414. and sisters

  1415. and they

  1416. need your

  1417. encouragement

  1418. you might

  1419. need to say

  1420. hey brother

  1421. it just

  1422. encourages me

  1423. that you're

  1424. here this

  1425. morning in

  1426. the midst

  1427. of battling

  1428. cancer

  1429. I'm so glad

  1430. to see how

  1431. God's sustaining

  1432. you

  1433. you may

  1434. look at

  1435. the person

  1436. standing

  1437. next to

  1438. you

  1439. and say

  1440. hey can

  1441. we spend

  1442. a minute

  1443. just praying

  1444. for one

  1445. another

  1446. before we

  1447. go down

  1448. to take

  1449. the Lord's

  1450. supper

  1451. maybe you

  1452. just say

  1453. this is

  1454. awkward

  1455. and Will

  1456. made us

  1457. talk

  1458. what do

  1459. you say

  1460. isn't

  1461. Jesus

  1462. great

  1463. isn't

  1464. this

  1465. wonderful

  1466. it's

  1467. so good

  1468. to see

  1469. you here

  1470. it doesn't

  1471. have to

  1472. be

  1473. profound

  1474. right

  1475. maybe you

  1476. can say

  1477. I wrote

  1478. your name

  1479. down during

  1480. the sermon

  1481. and I

  1482. just wanted

  1483. to confess

  1484. that to

  1485. you now

  1486. I'm supposed

  1487. to encourage

  1488. you this

  1489. checks it

  1490. off my

  1491. list

  1492. I don't

  1493. whatever

  1494. you say

  1495. I want

  1496. you to

  1497. see

  1498. that God's

  1499. put you

  1500. in a

  1501. family

  1502. and I

  1503. want us

  1504. not just

  1505. to think

  1506. that but

  1507. to live

  1508. that

  1509. it's not

  1510. this is

  1511. not the

  1512. only time

  1513. we can

  1514. do that

  1515. but it's

  1516. a good

  1517. time

  1518. that's

  1519. part

  1520. of the

  1521. truth

  1522. we

  1523. celebrate

  1524. here

  1525. is that

  1526. Jesus

  1527. has brought

  1528. us into

  1529. a family

  1530. and so

  1531. we're not

  1532. to neglect

  1533. the body

  1534. when we're

  1535. together

  1536. to celebrate

  1537. after I

  1538. pray I'm

  1539. going to

  1540. give you

  1541. the freedom

  1542. to stand

  1543. and move

  1544. and then

  1545. come as

  1546. you can

  1547. the ushers

  1548. have promised

  1549. both to

  1550. help you

  1551. and to

  1552. be flexible

  1553. when you're

  1554. not sitting

  1555. where you

  1556. usually are

  1557. when they

  1558. come to

  1559. your row

  1560. come to

  1561. a table

  1562. as you're

  1563. able and

  1564. we're happy

  1565. to serve

  1566. you

  1567. let's

  1568. pray

  1569. father

  1570. we're

  1571. so

  1572. grateful

  1573. for

  1574. this

  1575. gift

  1576. because

  1577. it

  1578. reminds

  1579. us

  1580. of

  1581. your

  1582. presence

  1583. with

  1584. us

  1585. your

  1586. love

  1587. for

  1588. us

  1589. your

  1590. forgiveness

  1591. of

  1592. our

  1593. sins

  1594. your

  1595. welcome

  1596. into

  1597. a

  1598. family

  1599. we

  1600. could

  1601. never

  1602. have

  1603. earned

  1604. our

  1605. way

  1606. into

  1607. thank

  1608. you

  1609. thanks

  1610. that

  1611. we

  1612. never

  1613. come

  1614. alone

  1615. that

  1616. there's

  1617. brothers

  1618. and

  1619. sisters

  1620. that

  1621. we

  1622. need

  1623. and

  1624. who

  1625. need

  1626. us

  1627. give

  1628. us

  1629. grace

  1630. to

  1631. speak

  1632. and

  1633. live

  1634. that

  1635. truth

  1636. that

  1637. life

  1638. changing

  1639. truth

  1640. into

  1641. one

  1642. another's

  1643. lives

  1644. use

  1645. even

  1646. these

  1647. common

  1648. elements

  1649. to do

  1650. something

  1651. deeply

  1652. spiritual

  1653. and

  1654. supernatural

  1655. in our

  1656. hearts

  1657. today

  1658. that would

  1659. carry

  1660. through

  1661. this week

  1662. in our

  1663. lives

  1664. we

  1665. ask

  1666. in

  1667. Jesus

  1668. name
