  3. !

  4. Goodness. If you've not been at Southwood before, when the pastor cries before the sermon, it is not a good sign, and you should start praying for him right now.

  5. Now, it's not just appropriate for our graduates, but for all of us who are needing to walk by faith, who are perhaps some of us wondering,

  6. what might it mean to have faith in the God of the Bible?

  7. I'm going to read just the first three verses for now, but we're going through the whole chapter, and I'd encourage you to keep a Bible open.

  8. To Hebrews 11, as we're going to look at a lot of it as we go, but right now, this is the holy, inerrant, infallible Word of God.

  9. Now, faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.

  10. For by it, the people of old received their commendation.

  11. By faith, we understand that the universe was created by the Word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things that are visible.

  12. God, thank you for your Word.

  13. Lord, would you help us this morning, as your people in this chapter through the Old Testament, as they heard your voice and trusted you and followed you,

  14. would you so help us, speak to us that we would hear you, work in our hearts, spirit, that we might love you, trust you,

  15. and in our lives, that we might follow you all of our days.

  16. We ask it in Jesus' name. Amen.

  17. Seeing is believing is a philosophy that's familiar to many in our world these days.

  18. Scientific naturalism tells you that what you see is all there is.

  19. That's all you can count on.

  20. But think about it more at a street level, the way we encounter it in our lives.

  21. Even in a world where we are skeptical if the video on social media is actually real,

  22. for many of us, it is the things that we see.

  23. Our security comes from numbers we see in our bank account.

  24. Our happiness comes from the stuff we have that we can look at and enjoy.

  25. Our beauty is often seen as skin deep.

  26. Our importance, our value in the world, whether we've been successful in life,

  27. is often seen in the size of our houses,

  28. the type of car that we drive, the location of our office,

  29. building our lives around the things we can see with our eyes, right?

  30. Seems to come natural.

  31. Makes sense.

  32. Except that God's word tells us we are made to walk by faith,

  33. not by sight.

  34. To build our lives quite differently, actually, around unseen realities.

  35. There's so much that we can't see.

  36. I mean, our graduates,

  37. they're preparing to walk into new places,

  38. new people,

  39. new life experiences that are hard for them even to imagine today what's ahead.

  40. Our prayer guide's expectant mothers list indicates quite a few of you are investing lots of energy

  41. and excitement in preparing for a new person who will transform your life,

  42. and you don't even know what he or she is like yet.

  43. Come to think of it,

  44. whether you're awaiting test results,

  45. navigating technological changes,

  46. trying to predict the weather,

  47. even things that we see leave us with lots of uncertainty.

  48. All of us.

  49. Whom and what will we trust?

  50. Hebrews has just quoted at the end of chapter 10,

  51. last week,

  52. that famous line,

  53. the righteous shall live by faith.

  54. That's how we're to live,

  55. by faith.

  56. And so chapter 11 starts by saying,

  57. faith is the assurance of things hoped for,

  58. the conviction of things not seen.

  59. In other words,

  60. what do those words mean?

  61. And what's it telling us about faith?

  62. It's the confidence of counting on something,

  63. of building my life around something,

  64. of placing my hope in something

  65. that my eyes don't see right now.

  66. Why in the world would you do that?

  67. That sounds crazy, right?

  68. That's blind faith, isn't it?

  69. Well, not exactly.

  70. You're not just insisting on believing something

  71. against all evidence to the contrary.

  72. No, he's actually about to give us story

  73. after story after story

  74. of people who lived like this,

  75. trusting God when they couldn't see.

  76. And it's not an invitation here

  77. when he says live by faith

  78. to check your brain at the door

  79. and just come believe.

  80. That's not it.

  81. Rather, he actually begins the opposite direction.

  82. He begins by saying,

  83. open your eyes.

  84. He turns our eyes,

  85. not only to the real stories,

  86. but also to the real world all around us.

  87. Do you see all this, he says?

  88. Look out the windows.

  89. God made all this from nothing.

  90. All these things your eyes see,

  91. the closer you look,

  92. they have the marks of a designer,

  93. don't they?

  94. I mean, you're thinking,

  95. I didn't see mountains and bugs

  96. and flowers and stars formed.

  97. I didn't see them come into existence.

  98. How'd that happen?

  99. There's a God behind it all.

  100. And people have been trusting him

  101. for millennia now,

  102. even though they haven't physically seen him.

  103. In other words,

  104. it may just actually be

  105. that believing is seeing.

  106. That the clearest vision possible

  107. comes when you set your eyes

  108. on things you can't see.

  109. What could that look like?

  110. That's so weird, pastor.

  111. What are you talking about?

  112. Can I live by faith?

  113. Would I want to?

  114. How would I do that?

  115. That's what this chapter's about.

  116. Though our physical eyes are limited,

  117. the eyes of faith see.

  118. Above all else,

  119. they see a person.

  120. Here's what I mean.

  121. In the classic movie Aladdin,

  122. you've all,

  123. oh, I wish you'd all seen Aladdin.

  124. I'm going to show you just a little bit of it.

  125. Princess Jasmine,

  126. and she leaves the palace, okay,

  127. where she's grown up.

  128. And she finds herself in a marketplace

  129. that she's never seen before.

  130. Completely unfamiliar place.

  131. But the boy who lives there on the streets,

  132. he knows the marketplace.

  133. And they're being pursued,

  134. chased,

  135. and they're trapped now

  136. on the edge of a building.

  137. And she can't see,

  138. has no idea what's over the edge.

  139. She's left with a famous choice.

  140. A leap of faith,

  141. one might say.

  142. But not a leap for no reason.

  143. She trusted the boy,

  144. right?

  145. Later in the story,

  146. that's actually how she recognizes

  147. this boy when he's dressed up as a prince.

  148. Do you trust me?

  149. Do you trust me?

  150. He's offering to show her the world

  151. on a magic carpet,

  152. and look what happens.

  153. Do you trust me?

  154. I showed you that second clip

  155. because I think God wants us

  156. to recognize him

  157. saying again to us,

  158. do you trust me?

  159. Do you trust me?

  160. There's so much you don't know.

  161. There's so much out there

  162. you haven't seen,

  163. and you can't see,

  164. and you won't understand.

  165. But do you trust me?

  166. That's what it comes down to.

  167. It's interesting as we go through this chapter

  168. how much he talks about seeing.

  169. Notice by faith,

  170. verse 26,

  171. Moses left Egypt,

  172. not being afraid of the anger of the king,

  173. even though the king was right there

  174. in front of him,

  175. and very powerful.

  176. Moses boldly stood before him,

  177. called the king to account.

  178. How did he do that?

  179. How did he stand in front of him?

  180. For he endured as seeing him

  181. who is invisible.

  182. It's a great statement of faith

  183. if you want one to take home with you today.

  184. The eyes of faith see God's person.

  185. Believe that he exists,

  186. verse 6 says,

  187. that you can actually draw near to him

  188. because he's personal.

  189. He wants you to know him.

  190. So how do you see an invisible God?

  191. Believe then that he exists.

  192. Well, verse 3, remember,

  193. told us that God's creation

  194. is a big part of that.

  195. We can see that someone started all this.

  196. Someone incredibly powerful

  197. and creative and orderly

  198. and preexistent.

  199. Someone did this.

  200. We know that Moses

  201. had heard God speak

  202. by this point in his story.

  203. We hear him speak to us, don't we?

  204. In his word.

  205. It tells us who this creator God is.

  206. It explains so much about his world

  207. and about our place in it.

  208. And over time,

  209. people have learned

  210. that his words are trustworthy.

  211. And true.

  212. For example, verse 11,

  213. by faith, Sarah.

  214. What happens to her?

  215. She conceives a child

  216. when to her human eyes,

  217. physically, she's too old.

  218. But she sees God.

  219. She considers him faithful

  220. who had promised.

  221. She hadn't physically seen God, right?

  222. But Sarah had watched for decades

  223. as God led her and her husband Abraham,

  224. as God rescued her

  225. in various situations,

  226. as God helped Abraham grow.

  227. So she saw God

  228. and learned that she could trust him.

  229. He comes through.

  230. Person after person here

  231. acts on things they haven't seen

  232. because they trust God himself.

  233. Do you slow down

  234. to see the invisible God?

  235. If you don't,

  236. it'll just be everything

  237. that comes in front of your face.

  238. That is the very beginning

  239. of the life of faith,

  240. y'all.

  241. Seeing

  242. the invisible God.

  243. If he's real,

  244. and he is,

  245. if he made this world,

  246. and he did,

  247. then you will not be left

  248. without reminders of him

  249. no matter where you live this fall.

  250. No matter how confusing

  251. the path forward appears to you,

  252. you won't be left

  253. without things

  254. that will point you to see him.

  255. You don't have to see the future.

  256. You see the God

  257. of the present and the future.

  258. And you look by faith for him.

  259. And you trust him.

  260. That's living by faith.

  261. Secondly,

  262. we learn the eyes of faith

  263. see God's promises.

  264. Even seeing ahead

  265. to their fulfillment.

  266. This is so remarkable to me.

  267. I hope I can

  268. give you a picture of it.

  269. It made me pray this week.

  270. God, help my faith.

  271. See, one after another

  272. in this chapter,

  273. they hold on to God's promises

  274. to them,

  275. even though for the large majority

  276. of them,

  277. they don't actually get

  278. those promises fulfilled

  279. in their lifetimes.

  280. Their entire lives.

  281. Look at Sarah again,

  282. who believed God was faithful.

  283. And so she and her husband Abraham

  284. become the parents

  285. of descendants

  286. as many as the stars

  287. and the sand.

  288. Amazing.

  289. But did they live long enough

  290. to see that happen?

  291. No.

  292. Verse 13.

  293. These all died in faith,

  294. not having received

  295. the things promised,

  296. but having seen them

  297. and greeted them

  298. from afar.

  299. That's repeated again

  300. after all the people

  301. who suffered terribly

  302. and were commended

  303. for their faith,

  304. but verse 39 says,

  305. did not receive

  306. what was promised yet.

  307. But what did all these see?

  308. What kept them going?

  309. They saw the things

  310. God promised

  311. to the point that they

  312. greeted them from afar.

  313. They were that real.

  314. What faith they had.

  315. They so trusted this God,

  316. believed that He'd proven

  317. Himself faithful,

  318. found being His

  319. so wonderfully worthy

  320. that they could die

  321. without receiving

  322. the fulfillment

  323. of His promise.

  324. Do you believe that?

  325. Look at Moses' story.

  326. It's so powerful.

  327. Verse 24.

  328. By faith, Moses,

  329. when he was grown up,

  330. refused to be called

  331. the son of Pharaoh's daughter,

  332. choosing rather

  333. to be mistreated

  334. with the people of God

  335. than to enjoy

  336. the fleeting pleasures of sin.

  337. He considered

  338. the reproach of Christ

  339. greater wealth

  340. than the treasures of Egypt,

  341. for he was looking

  342. to the reward.

  343. Moses had at his disposal

  344. the power,

  345. the prestige,

  346. the influence,

  347. the wealth of the world

  348. in the nation of Egypt, right?

  349. Thanks to God sending Joseph

  350. there to prepare Egypt

  351. for the seven years of famine.

  352. Every nation around

  353. is coming to Egypt.

  354. Egypt.

  355. And Moses lives

  356. in the palace.

  357. But God's people

  358. were enslaved.

  359. And Moses chooses

  360. which one?

  361. To be with them.

  362. Mistreated

  363. with God's people.

  364. Think about it, y'all.

  365. Mistreated

  366. with these slaves

  367. or pleasant

  368. and comfortable

  369. and rich

  370. in sin.

  371. How did Moses decide?

  372. It wasn't just

  373. that he was so holy.

  374. Moses did the math.

  375. It says.

  376. If God is real,

  377. then being on

  378. his team,

  379. even if it hurts

  380. for days

  381. or months

  382. or years,

  383. even if I never

  384. make it to the promised land

  385. before I die

  386. and he didn't,

  387. it's actually

  388. way more valuable

  389. in the long run

  390. than all the gold

  391. in Egypt

  392. which will only

  393. make me feel good

  394. for a little while.

  395. I've got

  396. God himself,

  397. Moses said.

  398. I've got

  399. eternal treasure.

  400. Life is

  401. not all about

  402. what I see

  403. right in front of me

  404. because God

  405. has promised

  406. to deliver

  407. his people.

  408. I can trust

  409. him.

  410. Y'all,

  411. that's hard.

  412. The fleeting

  413. pleasures

  414. of sin

  415. look

  416. exactly

  417. like that.

  418. They feel,

  419. they sound,

  420. they taste

  421. pleasurable.

  422. That's what it says.

  423. And so,

  424. if you're going

  425. to choose

  426. something different,

  427. you have to believe

  428. that God's ways,

  429. God's laws

  430. are sweeter

  431. than honey.

  432. Seeing God

  433. as the ultimate

  434. king,

  435. seeing his words

  436. as trustworthy,

  437. seeing his promises

  438. as true

  439. and things that are

  440. actually able

  441. to be held on to,

  442. that's what enables

  443. you,

  444. for example,

  445. to say no

  446. to sex

  447. before marriage.

  448. Even when it's

  449. increasingly popular

  450. and your head

  451. tells you

  452. it makes sense.

  453. It's what enables

  454. you to say no

  455. to using AI

  456. to cheat

  457. on the project

  458. when everyone

  459. else is doing it

  460. and your grade

  461. will probably be

  462. lower than theirs

  463. if you don't.

  464. It's what enables

  465. you to say yes

  466. to a Sabbath day

  467. when it feels

  468. like you're falling

  469. behind

  470. because God says

  471. it's how you work

  472. best.

  473. It's a gift,

  474. I promise.

  475. He says

  476. just trust me.

  477. Maybe you're

  478. getting ready

  479. to move

  480. to a new place

  481. and you're worried

  482. you're going

  483. to be alone.

  484. You'll struggle

  485. to fit in,

  486. find community.

  487. By faith

  488. you can see

  489. God's promise

  490. that Bill mentioned

  491. earlier,

  492. never to leave you

  493. nor forsake you.

  494. Even when you

  495. feel alone,

  496. you can say

  497. I'll go.

  498. Maybe you're

  499. deeply sad

  500. about being

  501. childless.

  502. Sometimes it

  503. makes you feel

  504. God has

  505. abandoned you.

  506. He's not

  507. given you

  508. the longings

  509. of your heart.

  510. By faith

  511. you can see

  512. God's promise

  513. of brothers

  514. and sisters

  515. and sons

  516. and daughters

  517. in his

  518. family,

  519. even if they

  520. don't come

  521. for a while

  522. in your

  523. lifetime

  524. even.

  525. See,

  526. faith is not

  527. a magic wand

  528. to make your

  529. life better

  530. in the way

  531. and time

  532. you please.

  533. No,

  534. it is a

  535. confident trust

  536. in the God

  537. who will make

  538. your life

  539. best

  540. in the way

  541. and time

  542. he pleases.

  543. That's faith.

  544. Whether you

  545. see it today

  546. or not,

  547. trust him.

  548. God is

  549. keeping his

  550. promise to

  551. you.

  552. He is.

  553. It's who he

  554. is.

  555. He's faithful.

  556. You can count

  557. on it.

  558. It's actually

  559. what Moses

  560. is counting

  561. on.

  562. When it

  563. says verse

  564. 26,

  565. he was

  566. looking

  567. to the

  568. reward.

  569. That means

  570. something beyond

  571. this life,

  572. doesn't it?

  573. If only

  574. for this

  575. life,

  576. we have

  577. hope in

  578. Christ.

  579. Y'all,

  580. just listen

  581. to what

  582. God's people

  583. endure

  584. starting at

  585. verse 32.

  586. It sounds

  587. good at

  588. first.

  589. What more

  590. shall I say

  591. for time

  592. would fail

  593. me to tell

  594. of Gideon,

  595. Barak,

  596. Samson,

  597. Jephthah,

  598. of David

  599. and Samuel

  600. and the

  601. prophets,

  602. who through

  603. faith conquered

  604. kingdoms

  605. and forced

  606. justice,

  607. obtained

  608. promises,

  609. stopped the

  610. mouths of

  611. lions,

  612. quenched

  613. the power

  614. of fire,

  615. escaped the

  616. edge of

  617. the sword,

  618. were made

  619. strong out

  620. of weakness,

  621. became mighty

  622. in war,

  623. put foreign

  624. armies to

  625. flight.

  626. Women

  627. received back

  628. their dead

  629. by resurrection.

  630. Some

  631. were tortured,

  632. refusing to

  633. accept release

  634. so that they

  635. might rise

  636. again to a

  637. better life.

  638. Others

  639. suffered

  640. mocking

  641. and flogging

  642. and even

  643. chains

  644. and imprisonment.

  645. They were

  646. stoned.

  647. They were

  648. sawn in

  649. two.

  650. They were

  651. killed with

  652. the sword.

  653. They went

  654. about in

  655. skins of

  656. sheep and

  657. goats,

  658. destitute,

  659. afflicted,

  660. mistreated,

  661. !

  662. of whom the

  663. world was

  664. not worthy,

  665. wandering

  666. about in

  667. deserts and

  668. mountains and

  669. in dens and

  670. caves of the

  671. earth.

  672. And all

  673. these,

  674. though commended

  675. through their

  676. faith,

  677. did not receive

  678. what was

  679. promised.

  680. They didn't

  681. receive yet

  682. what was

  683. promised.

  684. After all

  685. those things,

  686. key line,

  687. verse 38,

  688. of whom

  689. the world

  690. was not

  691. worthy.

  692. It means

  693. that there

  694. was no way

  695. that the

  696. world could

  697. satisfy them.

  698. they suffered

  699. deeply here.

  700. He's honest

  701. about that.

  702. They were

  703. made for

  704. something beyond

  705. this life.

  706. Their faith

  707. saw something

  708. else, even if

  709. they never got

  710. to have it

  711. here.

  712. It saw

  713. God's place.

  714. It's a theme

  715. throughout this

  716. chapter.

  717. Just as God

  718. said to Noah,

  719. verse 7,

  720. build an ark

  721. when you've

  722. never seen a

  723. flood.

  724. Boy, that's

  725. weird.

  726. God also

  727. said to

  728. Abraham, who

  729. was comfortable

  730. and successful,

  731. he was very

  732. prosperous at

  733. home in his

  734. own land,

  735. verse 8,

  736. go out to

  737. the promised

  738. land I'm

  739. going to

  740. give you.

  741. And Abraham

  742. said,

  743. where?

  744. Never seen

  745. it.

  746. Can't look it

  747. up online to

  748. see if I'll

  749. like it.

  750. And then

  751. much of the

  752. rest of

  753. Abraham's

  754. life was

  755. spent

  756. journeying

  757. living.

  758. Living where?

  759. Intense.

  760. Why?

  761. What was

  762. his reward?

  763. Was it the

  764. dirt of

  765. Canaan that

  766. he would

  767. finally get

  768. there?

  769. No.

  770. Verse 10,

  771. he was

  772. looking forward

  773. to the city

  774. with foundations

  775. designed and

  776. built by

  777. God.

  778. Back to

  779. verse 13.

  780. they were

  781. strangers

  782. and exiles

  783. on the

  784. earth.

  785. For people

  786. who speak

  787. thus make

  788. it clear

  789. that they're

  790. seeking a

  791. homeland.

  792. If they'd

  793. been thinking

  794. of that

  795. land from

  796. which they'd

  797. gone out,

  798. they would

  799. have had

  800. opportunity

  801. to return.

  802. But as

  803. it is,

  804. they desire

  805. a better

  806. country that

  807. is a

  808. heavenly

  809. one.

  810. Therefore,

  811. God is not

  812. ashamed to

  813. be called

  814. their God

  815. for he has

  816. prepared for

  817. them a

  818. city.

  819. Listen,

  820. God's got a

  821. place for

  822. you, a

  823. country, a

  824. city, and

  825. it's not even

  826. Auburn or

  827. Tuscaloosa.

  828. Of all of

  829. his promises

  830. that you can

  831. count on

  832. for you,

  833. don't miss

  834. this one.

  835. He's made

  836. a place

  837. for you

  838. forever

  839. with him

  840. so that

  841. even if you

  842. live in a

  843. tent now,

  844. you will

  845. reign with

  846. him

  847. forever.

  848. So that

  849. even if you

  850. don't make

  851. any money

  852. in this

  853. life,

  854. you will

  855. walk on

  856. streets of

  857. gold

  858. forever.

  859. So that

  860. even if you

  861. cry

  862. and suffer

  863. and die

  864. before you

  865. get to

  866. enjoy the

  867. best years

  868. of your

  869. life,

  870. you will

  871. live and

  872. laugh and

  873. love forever.

  874. The best is

  875. always yet to

  876. come.

  877. See, this

  878. world is not

  879. worthy of you,

  880. but the next

  881. one will be.

  882. It will

  883. delight and

  884. satisfy you

  885. forever in a

  886. way that you've

  887. only tasted a

  888. sample of what it's

  889. going to feel

  890. like to be

  891. full on the

  892. glories of

  893. God forever.

  894. That's your

  895. reward, a city

  896. prepared for

  897. you by the

  898. one who's not

  899. ashamed to be

  900. your God.

  901. He's actually

  902. eager to be

  903. seen there

  904. with you

  905. every day.

  906. Can you not

  907. wait for that?

  908. You are there

  909. with God and

  910. he's delighting

  911. in you.

  912. What a reward

  913. he is.

  914. I can trust

  915. him for that

  916. no matter

  917. what else.

  918. I heard

  919. stories this

  920. week of

  921. Iranian

  922. Christians who

  923. could be in

  924. Hebrews 11 as

  925. far as I'm

  926. concerned.

  927. Especially in

  928. the last few

  929. weeks, you

  930. want to talk

  931. about not

  932. seeing what's

  933. ahead?

  934. If they

  935. avoid the

  936. bombs around

  937. them,

  938. increasingly

  939. they might

  940. get arrested,

  941. beaten,

  942. even killed,

  943. for their

  944. faith.

  945. It's one of

  946. several countries

  947. these days where

  948. Christians really

  949. every day have

  950. to ask,

  951. is Jesus

  952. worth it?

  953. And you know

  954. what's happening

  955. in Iran?

  956. The church is

  957. growing like

  958. crazy.

  959. See, faith

  960. sees God

  961. and the place

  962. that he has

  963. prepared for

  964. those who love

  965. him even

  966. if this

  967. one seems

  968. to be

  969. going away

  970. fast.

  971. Maybe most

  972. of you don't

  973. live in Iran.

  974. I also

  975. sat with our

  976. brother Jim

  977. Harris this

  978. week.

  979. He so

  980. encouraged my

  981. heart as he

  982. described his

  983. struggle with

  984. cancer.

  985. He said he's

  986. been fighting the

  987. cancer because it's

  988. bad, it hurts,

  989. but Jim's not

  990. desperately

  991. fighting for

  992. his life.

  993. No.

  994. His life

  995. cancer can't

  996. take away.

  997. His life is

  998. hidden with

  999. Christ in

  1000. God,

  1001. his Savior

  1002. who's gone

  1003. to prepare a

  1004. place for

  1005. him, even if

  1006. he doesn't know

  1007. when he gets

  1008. to be there.

  1009. He doesn't see

  1010. what tomorrow

  1011. holds.

  1012. He doesn't

  1013. know his

  1014. days, but he

  1015. sees God and

  1016. his promise and

  1017. his hope forever.

  1018. He has a

  1019. place.

  1020. Graduates,

  1021. is Jesus

  1022. worth it?

  1023. You're going to

  1024. have to answer

  1025. that question

  1026. many times in

  1027. the days ahead,

  1028. some small

  1029. moments, some

  1030. big moments.

  1031. all of us

  1032. have to answer

  1033. that question.

  1034. Maybe this is a

  1035. reminder that

  1036. none of us

  1037. sees what

  1038. tomorrow holds

  1039. for us here.

  1040. All of us,

  1041. as a result,

  1042. face uncertain

  1043. futures, new

  1044. relationships, new

  1045. seasons of life

  1046. that we don't

  1047. know how to

  1048. handle.

  1049. Will we walk

  1050. by faith

  1051. today or

  1052. tomorrow because

  1053. Jesus is worth

  1054. it?

  1055. will we just

  1056. default to what

  1057. we see?

  1058. It's what we

  1059. know.

  1060. It's what we're

  1061. safe and

  1062. comfortable with.

  1063. It's what we

  1064. think we can

  1065. control.

  1066. Is that what

  1067. we'll lean

  1068. back into?

  1069. God's telling

  1070. you today, if

  1071. you want a firm

  1072. foundation, it's

  1073. him, his

  1074. promises, his

  1075. place.

  1076. grace.

  1077. See, if you

  1078. don't know this

  1079. yet, every

  1080. single one of

  1081. us will face a

  1082. day when our

  1083. next step, our

  1084. eternity beyond

  1085. this life is

  1086. unseen.

  1087. And that next

  1088. step is based

  1089. not on what

  1090. college we

  1091. attended, doesn't

  1092. help.

  1093. Not even your

  1094. ACT score helps.

  1095. Unbelievable.

  1096. It's not based

  1097. on the amount

  1098. of money that

  1099. you've made.

  1100. It's not based

  1101. on the family

  1102. you've started,

  1103. the beaches

  1104. you've visited,

  1105. the professional

  1106. awards you've

  1107. received.

  1108. They don't

  1109. count.

  1110. In fact, none

  1111. of them will

  1112. catch you when

  1113. you're falling

  1114. over the edge

  1115. on that day.

  1116. None of them.

  1117. You don't get

  1118. points for any

  1119. of those things

  1120. that you can

  1121. see.

  1122. That would be

  1123. living by sight,

  1124. living by faith,

  1125. says what

  1126. matters on

  1127. that day is

  1128. did you trust

  1129. God?

  1130. Did you put

  1131. your hope in

  1132. His promises?

  1133. Did you rest

  1134. in His place?

  1135. Can He come

  1136. through?

  1137. It's the

  1138. better way,

  1139. friend.

  1140. It is.

  1141. God.

  1142. I hope you're

  1143. still just a

  1144. little bit

  1145. unsettled at

  1146. all these

  1147. people who

  1148. sacrificed for

  1149. God and

  1150. then died

  1151. without getting

  1152. what they were

  1153. promised.

  1154. Like, what kind

  1155. of advertisement

  1156. is that?

  1157. God, come

  1158. on.

  1159. He finally

  1160. tells us why

  1161. in the last

  1162. verse of the

  1163. chapter.

  1164. Since God

  1165. had provided

  1166. something better

  1167. for us,

  1168. that apart

  1169. from us,

  1170. they should

  1171. not be made

  1172. perfect.

  1173. This is the

  1174. last thing.

  1175. Something

  1176. better.

  1177. Southwood,

  1178. please don't

  1179. get this

  1180. question wrong.

  1181. I will cry

  1182. all day.

  1183. in Hebrews,

  1184. who or what

  1185. is something

  1186. better?

  1187. Thank you.

  1188. Jesus.

  1189. When you read

  1190. something better

  1191. in Hebrews,

  1192. it's talking

  1193. about Jesus.

  1194. Jesus coming.

  1195. He is the

  1196. better access,

  1197. the better

  1198. relationship

  1199. with God,

  1200. the better

  1201. sacrifice,

  1202. the better

  1203. priest.

  1204. Here, the

  1205. better city,

  1206. the better

  1207. country.

  1208. All of that,

  1209. listen, living

  1210. by faith is

  1211. not as

  1212. complicated as

  1213. I may have

  1214. made it sound

  1215. this morning.

  1216. It really is

  1217. as simple

  1218. as seeing

  1219. Jesus.

  1220. It boils

  1221. down to that.

  1222. Yes, we can

  1223. see the person

  1224. of God in

  1225. creation and

  1226. in his word,

  1227. but we

  1228. especially and

  1229. most brilliantly

  1230. see the glory

  1231. of God made

  1232. flesh in the

  1233. face of Jesus

  1234. Christ.

  1235. and we

  1236. know he

  1237. exists and

  1238. we know that

  1239. because he's

  1240. come, he wants

  1241. us to know

  1242. him personally.

  1243. The promises

  1244. of God

  1245. through the

  1246. shadows of the

  1247. Old Testament,

  1248. what's he

  1249. promising?

  1250. Forgiveness and

  1251. cleansing,

  1252. deliverance from

  1253. bondage into

  1254. relationship,

  1255. a land for

  1256. security.

  1257. All of those

  1258. promises are

  1259. yes and

  1260. amen in

  1261. Jesus through

  1262. his life and

  1263. his death and

  1264. his resurrection

  1265. life.

  1266. And your

  1267. confidence in

  1268. God's place,

  1269. though you

  1270. have never

  1271. seen it,

  1272. is in Jesus

  1273. as well.

  1274. Because he

  1275. brings us to

  1276. the city where

  1277. he has already

  1278. gone to prepare

  1279. a place for

  1280. us where he

  1281. is the lamp

  1282. and the light

  1283. of that city

  1284. forever.

  1285. Forever.

  1286. her.

  1287. Please hear me.

  1288. Dear graduates,

  1289. dear friends,

  1290. seeing Jesus

  1291. and trusting

  1292. him is not

  1293. a blind

  1294. leap of

  1295. faith.

  1296. This is

  1297. really important.

  1298. When Jesus

  1299. says,

  1300. do you

  1301. trust me?

  1302. He's not

  1303. asking you

  1304. to leave

  1305. your comfortable,

  1306. secure place

  1307. and go

  1308. somewhere you've

  1309. never seen

  1310. with your own

  1311. eyes unless

  1312. he's done

  1313. it himself.

  1314. It's exactly

  1315. what Jesus

  1316. does for you,

  1317. isn't it?

  1318. He leaves

  1319. the glories

  1320. of heaven.

  1321. He suffers

  1322. beyond what

  1323. any of us

  1324. have known.

  1325. He dies

  1326. on a cross

  1327. and he lives

  1328. today saying,

  1329. trust me,

  1330. you don't have

  1331. to do what

  1332. I've done,

  1333. but I know

  1334. what's over

  1335. the edge.

  1336. I know what's

  1337. coming next.

  1338. I've been

  1339. there.

  1340. So you

  1341. just see

  1342. me and

  1343. take my

  1344. hand and

  1345. walk by

  1346. faith.

  1347. That's

  1348. what we're

  1349. offered this

  1350. morning.

  1351. He may be

  1352. calling you

  1353. to leave

  1354. home and

  1355. walk by

  1356. faith for

  1357. the very

  1358. first time

  1359. today.

  1360. I can't

  1361. promise you

  1362. it will be

  1363. easy.

  1364. I can promise

  1365. you it

  1366. probably won't.

  1367. But I can

  1368. promise you

  1369. you'll never

  1370. be alone

  1371. and eternity

  1372. will be

  1373. glorious

  1374. with your

  1375. best days

  1376. always ahead

  1377. of you.

  1378. If you're

  1379. going off to

  1380. college

  1381. unsure of

  1382. that,

  1383. I'd love to

  1384. talk to you

  1385. today.

  1386. Don't leave

  1387. today without

  1388. talking to me

  1389. or your

  1390. parents or

  1391. someone you

  1392. trust about

  1393. that.

  1394. God's

  1395. but he may

  1396. be calling

  1397. you to

  1398. leave home

  1399. and walk

  1400. by faith

  1401. again

  1402. today

  1403. because it's

  1404. a new

  1405. season and

  1406. you may be

  1407. afraid.

  1408. You may be

  1409. sad.

  1410. You may be

  1411. overwhelmed

  1412. by all the

  1413. things that

  1414. you see with

  1415. your eyes.

  1416. and he

  1417. says fix

  1418. your eyes

  1419. not on

  1420. what is

  1421. seen.

  1422. It's

  1423. temporary.

  1424. I promise.

  1425. But on

  1426. what's

  1427. unseen.

  1428. It's

  1429. eternal.

  1430. Never

  1431. ending.

  1432. So faith

  1433. is the

  1434. assurance

  1435. of things

  1436. hoped for.

  1437. The

  1438. certainty

  1439. of things

  1440. not seen.

  1441. Like the

  1442. fact.

  1443. The fact

  1444. that along

  1445. with Abraham

  1446. and Sarah

  1447. and Moses

  1448. and all

  1449. the saints

  1450. of old

  1451. you who

  1452. suffer now

  1453. will be

  1454. made perfect

  1455. forever.

  1456. You haven't

  1457. seen that.

  1458. It's hard

  1459. to imagine

  1460. but it's

  1461. true and

  1462. it is

  1463. certain

  1464. because God

  1465. has something

  1466. better

  1467. for you.

  1468. Even

  1469. Jesus.

  1470. Let's

  1471. pray.

  1472. God

  1473. thank you

  1474. for giving

  1475. us

  1476. Jesus.

  1477. Thank you

  1478. that he's

  1479. better.

  1480. Even

  1481. suffering

  1482. with him

  1483. is worth

  1484. more than

  1485. all the

  1486. treasures

  1487. of the

  1488. world

  1489. and these

  1490. saints of

  1491. old who

  1492. walked with

  1493. you and

  1494. never tasted

  1495. it here.

  1496. Oh they

  1497. rejoiced

  1498. when they

  1499. saw Jesus'

  1500. day and

  1501. so they

  1502. celebrate

  1503. today and

  1504. forever with

  1505. him.

  1506. they're not

  1507. complaining that

  1508. they never got

  1509. the promises

  1510. here.

  1511. They are

  1512. praising you

  1513. that they're

  1514. living in your

  1515. promises now

  1516. and forever.

  1517. Thank you

  1518. Jesus.

  1519. Would you

  1520. teach us to

  1521. walk by faith?

  1522. It's not

  1523. natural for

  1524. us.

  1525. We trust so

  1526. many other

  1527. things especially

  1528. the ones we

  1529. can see.

  1530. so help us

  1531. graduates and

  1532. parents and

  1533. all your

  1534. people to

  1535. trust you

  1536. and walk

  1537. with you

  1538. today.

  1539. We ask it

  1540. in Jesus'

  1541. name.

  1542. Amen.
