  1. You are listening to a message from Southwood Presbyterian Church in Huntsville, Alabama.

  2. ! Our passion is to experience and express grace. Join us.

  3. ! Turning our eyes upon Jesus. That's why we're here.

  4. It's not just a Sunday morning thing, but it needs to be at least that to help us with every moment.

  5. That's actually what we saw last week, that faith is.

  6. Faith, really, is seeing Jesus, right?

  7. Building our lives on realities that our eyes can't see, but are nonetheless true and eternal.

  8. Faith, then, can't be a one-time activity.

  9. Faith, then, can't be a one-time activity.

  10. Sometimes, if you're talking to somebody that you've met about faith,

  11. we may say that we had faith with something that happened in our lives back when we were a young person

  12. and we walked an aisle or we prayed a prayer, and so we have faith.

  13. The Bible says faith is not something that we just know about or that we just do once.

  14. Rather, it is a lifelong race.

  15. Hebrews 12 now turns us to a discussion of running the race of faith.

  16. So we've got our image for this morning, right?

  17. I don't have to make anything up.

  18. We've got a race.

  19. God is here in chapter 11, helped us see what faith is,

  20. what it looks like when people trust unseen realities

  21. more than the things they see with their own eyes.

  22. And so now, God says in chapter 12,

  23. go, run by faith.

  24. Every day, run.

  25. Let's listen to God's word together

  26. and then ask that we might be shaped by it.

  27. We need that.

  28. Hebrews 12 at verse 1.

  29. Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses,

  30. let us also lay aside every weight and sin which clings so closely

  31. and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us,

  32. looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith,

  33. who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross,

  34. despising the shame and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.

  35. Consider him who endured from sinners such hostility against himself

  36. so that you may not grow weary or faint-hearted.

  37. In your struggle against sin,

  38. you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood.

  39. And have you forgotten the exhortation that addresses you as sons?

  40. My son, do not regard lightly the discipline of the Lord,

  41. nor be weary when reproved by him,

  42. for the Lord disciplines the one he loves

  43. and chastises every son whom he receives.

  44. It is for discipline that you have to endure.

  45. God is treating you as sons.

  46. For what son is there whom his father does not discipline?

  47. If you're left without discipline in which all have participated,

  48. then you are illegitimate children and not sons.

  49. Besides this, we have had earthly fathers who disciplined us

  50. and we respected them.

  51. Shall we not much more be subject to the father of spirits and live?

  52. For they disciplined us for a short time as it seemed best to them,

  53. but he disciplines us for our good,

  54. that we may share his holiness.

  55. For the moment, all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant,

  56. but later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness

  57. to those who have been trained by it.

  58. Therefore, lift your drooping hands and strengthen your weak knees

  59. and make straight paths for your feet

  60. so that what is lame may not be put out of joint,

  61. but rather be healed.

  62. Strive for peace with everyone

  63. and for the holiness without which no one will see the Lord.

  64. See to it that no one fails to obtain the grace of God,

  65. that no root of bitterness springs up and causes trouble,

  66. and by it many become defiled,

  67. that no one is sexually immoral or unholy like Esau,

  68. who sold his birthright for a single meal.

  69. For you know that afterward,

  70. when he desired to inherit the blessing,

  71. he was rejected,

  72. for he found no chance to repent,

  73. though he sought it with tears.

  74. God's word.

  75. Let's ask for his help.

  76. Father, these are wonderful things,

  77. but they're difficult things for us,

  78. not so much to hear or even to grasp,

  79. but to live.

  80. We struggle.

  81. We need your grace.

  82. Would you so by your spirit give us grace

  83. that we might be willing,

  84. even eager,

  85. to have our lives shaped by your word

  86. more than by this world

  87. or even our own desires.

  88. Renew us, spirit, by your word

  89. and change us even,

  90. even where it hurts,

  91. so that we'd be more and more

  92. like our gracious Savior, Jesus,

  93. we ask in his name.

  94. Amen.

  95. In spite of how it's translated

  96. in English here,

  97. there's actually only one main verb

  98. here at the beginning of chapter 12.

  99. With endurance, let us run.

  100. Run the race set before us.

  101. All these heroes in chapter 11

  102. lived by faith, right?

  103. By faith, by faith.

  104. And now we are called

  105. to run our race

  106. by faith

  107. with endurance.

  108. Not, I hope this is encouraging,

  109. speed.

  110. It's not a sprint.

  111. Endurance.

  112. It means perseverance,

  113. patience,

  114. keeping on, keeping on,

  115. bearing up under

  116. whatever's pressing down on us.

  117. The preacher has been calling us

  118. to this all along in Hebrews.

  119. Don't drift.

  120. Cling to Jesus.

  121. Don't turn back.

  122. And now,

  123. keep running

  124. with endurance.

  125. It is absolutely essential

  126. to life with God.

  127. Endurance.

  128. It's essential,

  129. but it's not easy.

  130. So he has to keep calling us

  131. to it over and over,

  132. lest we grow weary

  133. and faint-hearted, right?

  134. And just not have

  135. the strength to carry on.

  136. And just want to notice up front,

  137. don't you love

  138. that God recognizes

  139. that our growing weary

  140. is a distinct possibility?

  141. He gets that.

  142. He doesn't mock us

  143. for growing weary.

  144. In fact,

  145. he has help

  146. and hope

  147. for us this morning.

  148. Switching temporarily.

  149. Why might we

  150. be weary?

  151. Have you never run a race before?

  152. Everybody

  153. gets weary

  154. at some point, right?

  155. It's like saying

  156. we're all so busy

  157. these days.

  158. Okay,

  159. runners get weary.

  160. Here in Hebrews,

  161. though,

  162. the weariness

  163. is a bit more pointed.

  164. Thank you so much,

  165. Jarrett.

  166. This will help everybody.

  167. God knows

  168. that we might grow weary

  169. because

  170. we're clinging

  171. to his promises

  172. and yet we're not

  173. seeing them

  174. fulfilled yet.

  175. Remember last week

  176. the people of faith

  177. in chapter 11?

  178. Finding life

  179. in God's promises

  180. but not finding them

  181. to be coming true

  182. in my life yet.

  183. It may be

  184. because we're being

  185. attacked

  186. for our commitment

  187. to Jesus

  188. and we seem

  189. to have nothing

  190. to show for it.

  191. Like the psalmist

  192. whose enemies

  193. kept prospering

  194. and pushing him down.

  195. we may be weary

  196. because

  197. sometimes

  198. it is just

  199. too hard

  200. hoping

  201. in the unseen

  202. living

  203. for Jesus

  204. and I

  205. just want

  206. to satisfy

  207. myself

  208. with some of the

  209. things of this

  210. world for a while.

  211. I want to scratch

  212. that itch.

  213. And we've

  214. parented

  215. patiently

  216. but it's not

  217. producing results.

  218. God,

  219. we're weary.

  220. I've prayed

  221. repeatedly

  222. but the chronic

  223. pain

  224. it just

  225. never seems

  226. to go away.

  227. God,

  228. I'm weary.

  229. God,

  230. you know,

  231. to be honest

  232. I do feel

  233. like I should

  234. make some time

  235. to think about

  236. how my faith

  237. in you

  238. affects all

  239. of my life.

  240. But right now

  241. I'm just trying

  242. to put food

  243. on the table

  244. for my family

  245. and keep money

  246. in the bank

  247. and get the kids

  248. where they need

  249. to go

  250. and plan our

  251. next vacation

  252. and try not

  253. to feel too

  254. discouraged

  255. about my

  256. failures as a

  257. spouse

  258. and get prepared

  259. for the next

  260. meeting

  261. and have some

  262. real friends

  263. I can actually

  264. count on

  265. and enjoy

  266. and I'm just

  267. too weary,

  268. God,

  269. with all of the

  270. things that I

  271. see right in

  272. front of me

  273. every day.

  274. I'm too weary

  275. to look up

  276. to anything

  277. else.

  278. I give up

  279. on trying

  280. to have

  281. life with

  282. God,

  283. a relationship,

  284. with him.

  285. I mean,

  286. he'll be there

  287. when I die.

  288. I've got

  289. faith for

  290. them.

  291. You feel

  292. any of that?

  293. I do.

  294. I have thought

  295. or said

  296. every one

  297. of those

  298. things at

  299. some point

  300. in my

  301. journey

  302. with Jesus.

  303. And God

  304. understands.

  305. He wants

  306. to encourage

  307. us today

  308. that the

  309. life of

  310. faith

  311. is a race

  312. to stay

  313. in,

  314. to run

  315. with endurance

  316. even

  317. when we're

  318. weary.

  319. He knows

  320. that it's not

  321. easy,

  322. but he wants

  323. to tell us

  324. how to do

  325. that.

  326. So it's

  327. intensely

  328. practical

  329. here.

  330. Pause.

  331. The race

  332. of faith

  333. is a

  334. daily race.

  335. So he

  336. starts here

  337. by addressing

  338. how do we

  339. stay ready

  340. to run

  341. well

  342. each

  343. day.

  344. First,

  345. he says,

  346. lay aside

  347. hindrances.

  348. Anything that

  349. would get in

  350. your way.

  351. Verse 1,

  352. let us also

  353. lay aside

  354. every weight

  355. and sin

  356. which clings

  357. so closely.

  358. So just

  359. imagine,

  360. before you

  361. run a race,

  362. you might

  363. need to

  364. train

  365. to shed

  366. some extra

  367. pounds,

  368. weight.

  369. You'll

  370. certainly

  371. want to

  372. empty your

  373. pockets,

  374. right?

  375. You'll

  376. take off

  377. a jacket

  378. if you're

  379. wearing it.

  380. You know,

  381. if you're

  382. really serious,

  383. you might

  384. shave your

  385. legs,

  386. right?

  387. You're

  388. really

  389. going to

  390. make sure

  391. there's

  392. nothing

  393. slowing

  394. you down

  395. in this

  396. race.

  397. You'll

  398. get rid

  399. of anything,

  400. even good

  401. things,

  402. that might

  403. slow you

  404. down.

  405. In other

  406. words,

  407. if your

  408. goal is

  409. running the

  410. race with

  411. endurance,

  412. it's a

  413. very simple

  414. decision what

  415. to keep

  416. with you

  417. for the

  418. race.

  419. Will it

  420. help you

  421. run or

  422. not?

  423. Not,

  424. am I

  425. allowed to

  426. or can I

  427. get away

  428. with a

  429. little bit,

  430. but will

  431. it help

  432. me run?

  433. So,

  434. you got a

  435. few things

  436. in your

  437. pocket in

  438. life,

  439. don't you?

  440. Meddling,

  441. mourning.

  442. How about

  443. your phone?

  444. How about

  445. your hobby?

  446. How about

  447. your habit?

  448. college

  449. football,

  450. book club,

  451. vacation,

  452. kids

  453. activities,

  454. my high

  455. paying job,

  456. my

  457. boyfriend.

  458. Should I

  459. keep it

  460. with me?

  461. Or not?

  462. Are you

  463. willing to

  464. ask?

  465. What's

  466. the question?

  467. I don't

  468. understand,

  469. Pastor,

  470. should I

  471. keep it

  472. with me?

  473. Of course

  474. I want to

  475. keep it

  476. with me.

  477. No,

  478. no,

  479. no,

  480. I'm

  481. asking a

  482. different

  483. question.

  484. Will it

  485. help me

  486. live by

  487. faith,

  488. run with

  489. endurance,

  490. keep my

  491. life focused

  492. on unseen

  493. realities,

  494. or obsessed

  495. with the

  496. world I see

  497. with my

  498. eyes?

  499. Which one?

  500. I just,

  501. I know

  502. from my

  503. own life,

  504. I think

  505. from looking

  506. at ours,

  507. if we

  508. would order

  509. our lives

  510. around honest

  511. answers to

  512. that question,

  513. they probably

  514. look different,

  515. maybe

  516. significantly

  517. different.

  518. Not because

  519. the things

  520. that we

  521. might decide

  522. to lay

  523. aside are

  524. bad things,

  525. but will

  526. we be

  527. willing to

  528. ask if

  529. or how

  530. they help

  531. us run

  532. by faith?

  533. Will we

  534. at least

  535. be willing

  536. to ask

  537. that question

  538. what did

  539. Jesus say

  540. in Luke

  541. 14?

  542. Any one

  543. of you

  544. who does

  545. not renounce

  546. all that

  547. he has

  548. cannot be

  549. my disciple.

  550. Deny

  551. yourself,

  552. take up

  553. your cross

  554. and follow

  555. me.

  556. And y'all,

  557. that's just

  558. the neutral

  559. stuff that

  560. we might

  561. need to

  562. lay aside.

  563. we certainly

  564. must lay

  565. aside

  566. the sin

  567. that so

  568. often trips

  569. us up.

  570. Harboring

  571. sin in your

  572. heart is like

  573. running a race

  574. with a big

  575. boulder on

  576. your back,

  577. weighing you

  578. down,

  579. or with your

  580. shoes untied,

  581. you're going

  582. to trip and

  583. fall at some

  584. point.

  585. So what do

  586. we do?

  587. Laying sin

  588. aside is called

  589. repentance,

  590. hating it,

  591. turning from

  592. it,

  593. confessing it

  594. to God.

  595. James says

  596. even confess

  597. your sins

  598. to one

  599. another.

  600. Fight

  601. against

  602. Satan

  603. and sin

  604. rather than

  605. just giving

  606. in to

  607. sloth

  608. or lust

  609. or slander.

  610. I talked

  611. with a brother

  612. this week

  613. who said

  614. generosity

  615. and giving

  616. is something

  617. that he

  618. loves,

  619. but he

  620. needs to

  621. do it

  622. because he

  623. says he's

  624. lifelong

  625. been fighting

  626. a battle

  627. against greed.

  628. It's one

  629. of his

  630. besetting

  631. sins

  632. and one

  633. of the

  634. things he's

  635. learned helps

  636. him in that

  637. battle is to

  638. give generously.

  639. I love

  640. that.

  641. Lay aside

  642. every weight.

  643. Lay aside

  644. every sin

  645. and

  646. look to

  647. Jesus.

  648. You didn't

  649. think he was

  650. going to take

  651. a week off

  652. from that,

  653. did you?

  654. Every page

  655. of Hebrews,

  656. isn't it?

  657. Because he's

  658. greater than

  659. anything else.

  660. Look to

  661. Jesus.

  662. Robert

  663. Murray

  664. McShane

  665. must have

  666. been reading

  667. Hebrews,

  668. I think,

  669. when he

  670. famously

  671. said,

  672. for every

  673. one look

  674. at yourself

  675. and your

  676. sin,

  677. take ten

  678. looks at

  679. Jesus.

  680. I hope

  681. this brief

  682. look he

  683. gives us

  684. will breathe

  685. life into

  686. your weary

  687. soul this

  688. morning.

  689. Just look

  690. at Jesus

  691. for a

  692. minute.

  693. Jesus,

  694. the

  695. founder

  696. and

  697. perfecter

  698. of our

  699. faith.

  700. The one

  701. who at

  702. the very

  703. beginning

  704. went before

  705. us as

  706. the champion,

  707. the trailblazer

  708. of our

  709. salvation.

  710. Remember

  711. that?

  712. Chapter

  713. two?

  714. He went

  715. before us

  716. and even

  717. in the

  718. beginning

  719. made our

  720. faith

  721. possible

  722. that the

  723. way up

  724. is down.

  725. He lives

  726. that and

  727. he perfects

  728. it in

  729. the end

  730. because our

  731. faith needs

  732. a perfect

  733. object.

  734. And Jesus

  735. always comes

  736. through like

  737. ultimately when

  738. he for the

  739. joy that was

  740. set before

  741. him endured

  742. the cross

  743. despising

  744. the shame

  745. sat down

  746. at the right

  747. hand of

  748. the throne

  749. of God.

  750. the deep

  751. shame of

  752. the cross.

  753. It marked

  754. the cross.

  755. Jesus

  756. considered that

  757. as insignificant

  758. compared to

  759. the joy

  760. that he saw

  761. in doing

  762. the will

  763. of his

  764. father,

  765. in achieving

  766. redemption

  767. for us,

  768. in bringing

  769. you and

  770. me with

  771. him into

  772. eternal

  773. glory with

  774. his father

  775. to have

  776. us there

  777. with him.

  778. That joy

  779. sustained

  780. him all

  781. the way

  782. to and

  783. through

  784. the cross.

  785. That's the

  786. Jesus that

  787. we look to

  788. now and

  789. every day.

  790. We slow

  791. down and

  792. consider

  793. him

  794. when we're

  795. weary,

  796. when we're

  797. overwhelmed,

  798. when we're

  799. losing heart.

  800. Because if

  801. we're hearing

  802. this sermon,

  803. we haven't

  804. given our

  805. lives yet.

  806. yet.

  807. But he

  808. did.

  809. And so

  810. there's

  811. hope that

  812. we then

  813. can suffer

  814. and yet

  815. endure.

  816. The first

  817. Christian

  818. martyr,

  819. Stephen,

  820. when he's

  821. being stoned,

  822. what does he

  823. look up and

  824. see?

  825. He sees

  826. Jesus

  827. standing at

  828. the right

  829. hand of

  830. God.

  831. And he's

  832. sustained

  833. all the way

  834. through his

  835. death.

  836. Since

  837. Stephen,

  838. many in the

  839. cloud of

  840. witnesses,

  841. martyrs,

  842. have looked

  843. to Jesus.

  844. And so

  845. we too

  846. look to

  847. the crucified

  848. Savior so

  849. that we

  850. can keep

  851. running,

  852. even and

  853. especially

  854. when it

  855. hurts.

  856. That's what

  857. takes us into

  858. this next

  859. section.

  860. Running

  861. with endurance

  862. is often

  863. painful.

  864. Non-runners

  865. tell me

  866. something I

  867. don't know.

  868. Right?

  869. Different

  870. times,

  871. different

  872. pains for

  873. different

  874. runners.

  875. But the

  876. side stitch

  877. is going

  878. to develop.

  879. Yeah?

  880. Right?

  881. About 50

  882. yards or

  883. so.

  884. Is that

  885. when you

  886. get it at

  887. 50 yards?

  888. Please,

  889. somebody.

  890. Maybe it's

  891. aching feet

  892. or leg

  893. muscles.

  894. In some

  895. moments you

  896. get to this

  897. just painful

  898. exhaustion of

  899. I can't even

  900. catch a breath.

  901. Or take

  902. another step

  903. that just

  904. hurts.

  905. Maybe it

  906. happens for

  907. you when you're

  908. cruising along

  909. and all of a

  910. sudden the

  911. slope starts

  912. to go up.

  913. You start to

  914. feel the pain.

  915. You been there?

  916. You felt that?

  917. One of my

  918. friends that I

  919. used to run

  920. with, some

  921. would ask me a

  922. theology question

  923. right at the

  924. bottom of a

  925. really big hill.

  926. and then he

  927. would just

  928. enjoy waiting

  929. for me to

  930. try to talk

  931. and breathe

  932. running up a

  933. hill at the

  934. same time.

  935. Didn't pick up

  936. on it for

  937. months.

  938. Bill Nash

  939. reminded us a

  940. few months

  941. ago that life

  942. itself is

  943. uphill.

  944. It's hard.

  945. That's part of

  946. what verses

  947. 5 through

  948. 11 are

  949. addressing when

  950. they talk about

  951. God's discipline.

  952. It is for

  953. discipline that

  954. you have to

  955. endure, verse

  956. 7.

  957. The idea here,

  958. it's a little bit

  959. hard I think to

  960. understand in the

  961. ESV, the NIV

  962. states it well,

  963. endure hardship

  964. as discipline.

  965. How do we run

  966. well when we're

  967. hurting, when it's

  968. hard?

  969. How do we not

  970. just give up and

  971. drop out of the

  972. race and just

  973. stop to make the

  974. pain go away?

  975. I know how to

  976. make it better.

  977. I could quit.

  978. He says we have

  979. to recognize that

  980. even the genuinely

  981. painful things in

  982. our lives are

  983. being worked for

  984. our good.

  985. So we don't

  986. deny the pain,

  987. don't call bad

  988. things good,

  989. no.

  990. Verse 11,

  991. at the time,

  992. for the moment,

  993. all discipline

  994. seems painful,

  995. not pleasant.

  996. We've got to

  997. see the hard

  998. things, the

  999. hurtful things,

  1000. and name that

  1001. struggle so that

  1002. we can take

  1003. that struggle

  1004. and that hurt

  1005. to God.

  1006. 18th century

  1007. British theologian

  1008. William Law

  1009. wrote,

  1010. receive every

  1011. inward and

  1012. outward trouble,

  1013. every disappointment,

  1014. pain, uneasiness,

  1015. temptation,

  1016. darkness,

  1017. and desolation

  1018. with both

  1019. your hands

  1020. as a true

  1021. opportunity and

  1022. blessed occasion

  1023. of dying to

  1024. self and

  1025. entering into a

  1026. fuller fellowship

  1027. with your

  1028. self-denying

  1029. suffering

  1030. savior.

  1031. You see what

  1032. he's saying?

  1033. Let the pain

  1034. point you to

  1035. the one who

  1036. bore your

  1037. pain, draw you

  1038. closer to him,

  1039. he's been there.

  1040. See, we don't

  1041. deny our pain,

  1042. but we also

  1043. don't deny our

  1044. father.

  1045. He's never

  1046. left us.

  1047. The point of

  1048. the preacher

  1049. here is that

  1050. painful realities

  1051. in your life

  1052. are actually

  1053. being used by

  1054. your heavenly

  1055. father for

  1056. your good,

  1057. to help you

  1058. share in

  1059. his holiness.

  1060. Whoa.

  1061. How would

  1062. that happen?

  1063. By reminding

  1064. you where

  1065. your hope is

  1066. to be found,

  1067. by producing

  1068. the peaceful

  1069. fruit of

  1070. righteousness

  1071. as you learn

  1072. to trust God

  1073. in spite of

  1074. the circumstances.

  1075. It's why

  1076. John Piper

  1077. wrote,

  1078. don't waste

  1079. your cancer.

  1080. He's saying

  1081. not that it's

  1082. a good thing,

  1083. but that it

  1084. is an opportunity

  1085. because you

  1086. have a good

  1087. father.

  1088. And so it

  1089. can actually

  1090. draw you

  1091. deeper into

  1092. relationship

  1093. with him.

  1094. Don't let

  1095. the pain

  1096. convince you

  1097. that God

  1098. doesn't care

  1099. or that God

  1100. has forgotten

  1101. you.

  1102. Far from it.

  1103. The painful

  1104. struggles are

  1105. evidences that

  1106. God cares for

  1107. you as a

  1108. father.

  1109. After all,

  1110. didn't Jesus

  1111. tell us that

  1112. not even a

  1113. single sparrow

  1114. falls to the

  1115. ground apart

  1116. from the will

  1117. of our father

  1118. in heaven

  1119. and that

  1120. we are

  1121. of more

  1122. value to

  1123. him than

  1124. many sparrows,

  1125. even then that

  1126. he has numbered

  1127. the very hairs

  1128. on our head.

  1129. So if something

  1130. more painful

  1131. than a hair

  1132. for you is

  1133. going on,

  1134. your father

  1135. knows,

  1136. your father

  1137. sees,

  1138. your father

  1139. is working

  1140. for your good

  1141. even through

  1142. bad.

  1143. That's come

  1144. into your life.

  1145. There's peace

  1146. then in the

  1147. pain.

  1148. Not peace

  1149. from the

  1150. circumstances

  1151. here.

  1152. No,

  1153. what did we

  1154. sing?

  1155. Peace that

  1156. flows from

  1157. heaven.

  1158. A strength

  1159. in time

  1160. of need.

  1161. I know my

  1162. pain will

  1163. not be

  1164. wasted.

  1165. Not a

  1166. single tear.

  1167. It won't be

  1168. wasted.

  1169. Christ completes

  1170. his work in

  1171. me.

  1172. Hardship is

  1173. endured by

  1174. seeing it as

  1175. discipline from

  1176. a loving

  1177. father.

  1178. Be encouraged.

  1179. God knows you

  1180. will hurt

  1181. deeply as

  1182. you run

  1183. the race

  1184. of faith

  1185. but it's

  1186. not arbitrary

  1187. or meaningless.

  1188. He's anchoring

  1189. you to an

  1190. eternal hope

  1191. to a suffering

  1192. savior.

  1193. And there are

  1194. going to be

  1195. days when you

  1196. struggle to

  1197. feel that,

  1198. to find that.

  1199. You need to

  1200. have a brother

  1201. or sister

  1202. who will enter

  1203. in with you,

  1204. who will not

  1205. deny the pain.

  1206. They'll listen

  1207. to you,

  1208. they'll mourn

  1209. with you,

  1210. but they won't

  1211. leave you there.

  1212. They won't let

  1213. you deny your

  1214. father either.

  1215. In fact,

  1216. they'll point

  1217. you to him.

  1218. They'll remind

  1219. you that although

  1220. you are hurting,

  1221. he's helping

  1222. you.

  1223. And that's the

  1224. heart behind the

  1225. final section

  1226. this morning.

  1227. It's going to

  1228. remind us that

  1229. the race of faith

  1230. is not an

  1231. individual project,

  1232. it's a group

  1233. project.

  1234. It's like a

  1235. team race where

  1236. your team doesn't

  1237. finish until

  1238. everyone makes

  1239. it across the

  1240. line.

  1241. The issue is not

  1242. how fast is the

  1243. fastest guy,

  1244. that doesn't

  1245. help,

  1246. but how do we

  1247. make sure that

  1248. we don't leave

  1249. anyone struggling

  1250. behind?

  1251. How do we run

  1252. well together?

  1253. Can we think

  1254. about that for

  1255. just a minute?

  1256. Look at verse

  1257. 12.

  1258. You can see the

  1259. discouraged runner

  1260. here, can't you?

  1261. Drooping hands,

  1262. just done,

  1263. ready to give up,

  1264. no more

  1265. motivation.

  1266. Weak knees,

  1267. unstable,

  1268. right?

  1269. Maybe even

  1270. fearful of

  1271. keeping on

  1272. running.

  1273. The lame

  1274. needing to be

  1275. healed on a

  1276. straight path.

  1277. That may be a

  1278. description of you

  1279. at times,

1280. but it may be a

  1281. brother or a

  1282. sister in your

  1283. family,

  1284. family,

  1285. in your

  1286. church,

  1287. in your

  1288. grace group.

  1289. Notice how

  1290. once again

  1291. Hebrews broadens

  1292. our focus

  1293. beyond ourselves

  1294. to our

  1295. brothers and

  1296. sisters.

  1297. Strive for

  1298. peace with

  1299. everyone,

  1300. for the

  1301. holiness without

  1302. which no one

  1303. will see the

  1304. Lord.

  1305. That's pretty

  1306. serious.

  1307. We have to be

  1308. connected to

  1309. Jesus to have

  1310. that kind of

  1311. holy life,

  1312. right?

  1313. So, so,

  1314. see to it

  1315. that no one

  1316. fails to

  1317. obtain the

  1318. grace of God.

  1319. Notice what he

  1320. says.

  1321. He doesn't say

  1322. make sure that

  1323. you obtain the

  1324. grace of God.

  1325. That's not what

  1326. he's calling you

  1327. to.

  1328. He's actually

  1329. calling you to

  1330. something harder

  1331. than that.

  1332. Be careful

  1333. about everyone

  1334. else.

  1335. You know,

  1336. about really

  1337. surface level

  1338. things in their

  1339. life like how's

  1340. your day and

  1341. how are your

  1342. kids?

  1343. no.

  1344. Be careful

  1345. about roots

  1346. of bitterness.

  1347. Look for

  1348. everyone else

  1349. about their

  1350. sexual morality,

  1351. about their

  1352. holiness.

  1353. Wow.

  1354. That doesn't

  1355. leave much

  1356. out.

  1357. Remember back

  1358. to chapter 10

  1359. we have a

  1360. responsibility to

  1361. stir one

  1362. another up to

  1363. love and

  1364. good works.

  1365. This is more

  1366. one anothering.

  1367. Running

  1368. together, arms

  1369. locked, no

  1370. one falls down

  1371. and gets left

  1372. behind in this

  1373. family.

  1374. Strengthen the

  1375. struggling.

  1376. Are you drawn

  1377. to those who

  1378. are hurting?

  1379. Maybe even to

  1380. those who look

  1381. like they're doing

  1382. pretty well but

  1383. they've got a

  1384. distinct limp as

  1385. they run,

  1386. weighed down by

  1387. an obsession

  1388. they can't

  1389. seem to

  1390. shake,

  1391. clung to

  1392. by a sin

  1393. that they

  1394. can't seem

  1395. to get away

  1396. from?

  1397. That's your

  1398. job,

  1399. friends.

  1400. It may not

  1401. be your

  1402. sin,

  1403. but she's

  1404. your sister.

  1405. It may not

  1406. be your

  1407. addiction,

  1408. but he's

  1409. your brother.

  1410. it's our

  1411. issue.

  1412. And God's

  1413. at work.

  1414. God's at work

  1415. in the struggling

  1416. one, in him

  1417. or her.

  1418. Perhaps even

  1419. he's at work

  1420. using you as

  1421. an agent of

  1422. his discipline,

  1423. as an agent of

  1424. his producing

  1425. holiness, so

  1426. that even the

  1427. one who is

  1428. most feebly

  1429. running receives

  1430. his grace and

  1431. then runs

  1432. freely again.

  1433. Don't give up

  1434. on them because

  1435. they're limping

  1436. behind.

  1437. Don't run

  1438. ahead without

  1439. them.

  1440. Pick them

  1441. up.

  1442. Run together.

  1443. Look to

  1444. Jesus.

  1445. He's enough

  1446. for all of

  1447. us.

  1448. And as you

  1449. do, remember

  1450. the relationship.

  1451. Yes, one

  1452. another, but

  1453. run well

  1454. together by

  1455. remembering the

  1456. relationship we

  1457. have with God

  1458. as our

  1459. Father.

  1460. It's a little

  1461. harder to

  1462. track with

  1463. here, but

  1464. that's the

  1465. issue for

  1466. Esau.

  1467. What did

  1468. Esau do?

  1469. Esau gave

  1470. away the

  1471. covenant

  1472. blessing that

  1473. he couldn't

  1474. see in the

  1475. moment.

  1476. You get

  1477. that?

  1478. You wake

  1479. up every day

  1480. and see the

  1481. covenant

  1482. blessing, the

  1483. glory of God

  1484. and his

  1485. faithfulness

  1486. immediately when

  1487. you open

  1488. your eyes?

  1489. No, he

  1490. didn't see it.

  1491. He gave that

  1492. away for

  1493. something that

  1494. he could see.

  1495. He could

  1496. taste it right

  1497. in that

  1498. moment, right?

  1499. Just for a

  1500. meal.

  1501. Esau lost

  1502. sight of what

  1503. was valuable.

  1504. I get that.

  1505. It's the

  1506. opposite of

  1507. living by

  1508. faith, of

  1509. valuing the

  1510. unseen, right?

  1511. All he could

  1512. value was what

  1513. he could have

  1514. right in that

  1515. moment and

  1516. see and touch

  1517. and taste.

  1518. And it was

  1519. later that he

  1520. realized that

  1521. that blessing,

  1522. that relationship

  1523. with the

  1524. covenant God

  1525. was so valuable.

  1526. See to it

  1527. that no one

  1528. is unholy,

  1529. neglecting the

  1530. blessing of

  1531. being set

  1532. apart as

  1533. God's

  1534. treasured

  1535. possession and

  1536. living as if

  1537. all that

  1538. matters is my

  1539. comfort and my

  1540. success right

  1541. here, right

  1542. now.

  1543. So here's the

  1544. deal for the

  1545. relationships in

  1546. your grace

  1547. group.

  1548. If you need to

  1549. turn around and

  1550. look at them to

  1551. remind yourself,

  1552. go ahead.

  1553. friends don't

  1554. let friends miss

  1555. the glory of

  1556. God's grace and

  1557. settle for less.

  1558. Friends don't

  1559. let friends

  1560. minimize the

  1561. value of being

  1562. loved by God

  1563. and drop out

  1564. of the race.

  1565. Friends don't

  1566. let friends live

  1567. for today and

  1568. neglect eternity

  1569. because we're all

  1570. prone to it and

  1571. we all need

  1572. help.

  1573. Turning our

  1574. eyes to Jesus.

  1575. The writer of

  1576. Hebrews has sent

  1577. us to stir one

  1578. another up.

  1579. Now he's calling

  1580. us to strengthen

  1581. the struggling,

  1582. not to let anyone

  1583. fall out of the

  1584. race of faith.

  1585. It's not a race

  1586. where you're

  1587. competing against

  1588. one another to

  1589. win, right?

  1590. Please don't get

  1591. confused.

  1592. It's a race you're

  1593. completing with one

  1594. another to endure,

  1595. to finish together.

  1596. That's the kind of

  1597. race that this is.

  1598. If you've ever run a

  1599. race of any length,

  1600. you know how much

1601. help it is not to

  1602. run alone.

  1603. you felt the

  1604. relief from the

  1605. cup of water

  1606. pass to you at

  1607. the right moment.

  1608. The strength from

  1609. the apt word of

  1610. encouragement spoken

  1611. by the runner next

  1612. to you.

  1613. Even the energy

  1614. from the crowd

  1615. cheering near the

  1616. finish line.

1617. I want us to think

  1618. about that together

  1619. as we close.

  1620. This image is

  1621. inspired by

  1622. Pastor Joe

  1623. Novenson a

  1624. couple years ago.

  1625. The cloud of

  1626. witnesses surrounding

1627. us in this race is

  1628. primarily those who've

  1629. gone before us in

  1630. the race.

  1631. For the sake of

  1632. Mother's Day, let's

  1633. call them our

  1634. spiritual mothers and

  1635. grandmothers.

  1636. But as you picture

  1637. them, the picture here

1638. is a bit different from

1639. what we often think when

  1640. we read this verse.

1641. It's not so much that

  1642. they're looking down and

  1643. watching us and

  1644. speaking to us.

  1645. It's actually that we

  1646. look at them and

  1647. their testimony of

  1648. faith is what we

  1649. hear when we see

  1650. them.

  1651. That Jesus is worth

  1652. it.

  1653. That God is faithful.

1654. That he never let me

  1655. go.

1656. I suspect each of us

  1657. has names and faces

  1658. that come to mind

  1659. immediately when we

  1660. think of forefathers

  1661. in the faith.

  1662. Those who've gone

  1663. before us.

  1664. Who've showed us the

  1665. path of faith and

1666. what it looks like to

  1667. walk.

  1668. Next week, we're

  1669. going to see that

  1670. endurance in the race

1671. of faith ends in a

  1672. kingdom.

  1673. I can't wait to

  1674. explore this with you.

  1675. But here, before we

  1676. get to that, endurance

  1677. ends finally in an

  1678. eternal embrace.

  1679. Abraham, Sarah,

  1680. Moses, who endured so

  1681. much.

  1682. the Old Testament

  1683. prophets and martyrs

1684. sawn in two who yet

  1685. hoped in the Lord,

  1686. waited on the Lord,

  1687. renewed their strength,

  1688. ran with wings like

  1689. eagles, not getting

  1690. weary.

  1691. They're embracing us as

1692. we cross the finish line.

1693. And so right now, here's

  1694. what they're doing.

  1695. They're taking the good

1696. news of Jesus, that he's

  1697. worth it.

  1698. the message of the

  1699. gospel that Jesus

  1700. saves, that the truth

1701. of the Bible, shape your

  1702. life around this.

  1703. They're taking this

  1704. baton and they are

  1705. pressing it into your

  1706. hand.

  1707. They're running and now

1708. they're handing it off to

  1709. you and they're saying,

  1710. Southwood, live by faith.

1711. Fix your eyes on Jesus

  1712. and run.

1713. Jesus himself is there in

  1714. this cloud of witnesses.

1715. The one who went to the

1716. cross in spite of its

1717. shame and Stephen and the

  1718. New Testament apostles and

1719. the many other martyrs who've

1720. given their lives for the

  1721. cause of Christ.

  1722. Christians through the

  1723. centuries have endured

  1724. persecution, suffered

  1725. through church schisms,

  1726. endured mockery.

  1727. missionary, missionaries

1728. who've packed all of their

  1729. belongings into a coffin

1730. to go invite people into

  1731. the eternal embrace of

1732. Jesus that they knew that

  1733. they themselves couldn't

1734. lose even if their life

  1735. ended trying to invite

  1736. others into it.

1737. As we read this passage

  1738. today, they're saying,

  1739. live by faith.

1740. Fix your eyes on Jesus.

1741. Take the baton and run.

  1742. Perhaps more recently, we

  1743. should think of Christians

  1744. in Nigeria.

  1745. Our brothers and sisters,

1746. some of whom even this

1747. week have ended their race

1748. that they endured by faith

  1749. in martyrdom.

1750. You may think of Frank

  1751. Six, of Laura Wolfson,

  1752. of Ron Brady,

  1753. who can't wait

  1754. to embrace us again

  1755. eternally

1756. to live in their embrace.

1757. They want us to bring with us

  1758. many more

  1759. from this community.

1760. They're by the Spirit of God

  1761. pressing the baton

1762. of the Word of God

1763. into our hands this morning

  1764. and saying,

  1765. Southwood family,

  1766. whom we love,

  1767. live by faith.

1768. Fix your eyes on Jesus

  1769. and run.

  1770. Run.

  1771. Run to our neighbors

  1772. and to the nations

  1773. toward lives of rest

1774. in a world of exhaustion,

  1775. lives of simplicity

1776. in a world of chaos,

  1777. toward lives of peace

1778. in a world of war

  1779. and holiness

1780. in a world of compromise,

  1781. toward lives of purpose

1782. in a world of distraction,

  1783. lives of service

1784. and a world of selfishness,

  1785. because by faith

  1786. you see Him

  1787. who is invisible,

  1788. who nobody else sees.

  1789. It's our turn,

  1790. Southwood.

1791. God's Word is saying to us,

  1792. there's a race

  1793. marked out for us.

  1794. It's our turn

  1795. to run it

  1796. with endurance.

  1797. Let's take the baton,

  1798. let's turn our eyes

  1799. to Jesus,

  1800. and let's run.

  1801. That's why this table

1802. is before us this morning.

  1803. Because we need

  1804. to see Jesus again

1805. and we're not going to run

  1806. in the right direction

  1807. at all.

  1808. You know that.

  1809. You know how capable

  1810. we are of wandering

1811. off the path of faith

  1812. in any moment.

  1813. And so Jesus sits

  1814. with disciples like that

  1815. who were weary,

1816. some of whom were losing

  1817. direction in the moment.

  1818. And that night

  1819. He was betrayed,

  1820. He took bread

  1821. and He broke it

1822. and He gave it to them

  1823. as I am ministering

  1824. in His name,

1825. give this bread to you.

  1826. He said,

  1827. take and eat.

  1828. This is my body

  1829. given for you.

  1830. Do this

  1831. in remembrance of me.

  1832. In the same way,

  1833. after supper

  1834. He took the cup

  1835. and He said,

1836. this cup is the new covenant

  1837. in my blood

  1838. shed for many

  1839. for the forgiveness

  1840. of sins.

  1841. Drink from it,

  1842. all of you.

  1843. For as often

1844. as you eat this bread,

1845. and you drink this cup,

1846. you proclaim the Lord's death

  1847. until He comes.

  1848. You say,

  1849. forgiveness of sins,

  1850. I need that.

  1851. Let me drink.

  1852. It's His death

  1853. and His death alone

1854. that can cover my sins.

1855. If that's how you run,

1856. if you run the race

  1857. looking to Jesus,

  1858. if you know

1859. that there is no other way

1860. for you to run towards God,

1861. that you can't get there

  1862. on your own

  1863. but you need Jesus,

  1864. if you run today

  1865. willing to lay aside

  1866. every weight

  1867. and every sin

  1868. which would cling

  1869. so closely to you

  1870. and trip you up,

  1871. then come running

  1872. to this table

  1873. because Jesus is here

  1874. for that.

1875. You can bring your sin

  1876. with you

  1877. as long as you're

  1878. bringing it to Him

  1879. to be crucified

  1880. at His cross

  1881. and mortified

  1882. in your life.

  1883. Put it to death.

1884. If that's not your story,

  1885. if you're not running

  1886. the race

  1887. looking to Jesus,

  1888. listen,

  1889. we're really glad

  1890. that you're here

  1891. with us this morning.

  1892. We wouldn't invite you

1893. to come to a table

  1894. and to do something

  1895. outwardly

  1896. that you don't believe

  1897. at all is true

  1898. for you inwardly.

1899. Maybe you do believe it.

1900. Maybe you have trusted Jesus

1901. but today you're not willing

  1902. to lay aside

  1903. the sin that clings

  1904. so closely

  1905. and you know it.

1906. Wherever you fit in that,

1907. we'd love to pray with you.

1908. You can just come up.

1909. You may be a part

  1910. of this family

  1911. for 50 years.

1912. You can come up here

  1913. and say,

  1914. Pastor,

  1915. I just need you

  1916. to pray for me.

  1917. Okay?

  1918. But if you want

  1919. to run to Jesus,

1920. if your heart trusts Him

1921. to take care of the sins

1922. that you want to lay aside

  1923. and to bring you

1924. all the way to glory,

  1925. then come and eat

  1926. and be strengthened

1927. to run the race by faith.

  1928. Let me pray.

  1929. Jesus,

  1930. we do need

  1931. your grace

  1932. and your help

  1933. to have the holiness

  1934. of God

  1935. without which

  1936. none of us

1937. will even see the Lord.

  1938. Oh,

1939. it's too much for us.

1940. And so we run to you

  1941. knowing that you're

  1942. perfectly holy,

  1943. knowing that you know

1944. what to do with sin,

  1945. that you've forgiven it

  1946. once and for all.

1947. And so we come to you,

  1948. Jesus,

  1949. and we come together

  1950. to you

  1951. because we'd not want

  1952. to figure this out

  1953. on our own.

1954. It's too much for us

  1955. and you've given us

  1956. one another

  1957. that we might run

  1958. this race together.

  1959. What a great gift.

1960. And so use very common

  1961. elements this morning

  1962. for a holy purpose.

  1963. Make us holy.

  1964. Strengthen our faith

1965. that we might really believe

1966. the things we don't see

  1967. are more real

  1968. and more true

  1969. and more valuable

  1970. than the things

  1971. that we do see.

  1972. Meet with us now.

  1973. Thank you for setting

  1974. the table for us.

  1975. In Jesus' name,

  1976. amen.
