  4. How Jesus is greater than anyone or anything else.

  5. And today we come to the powerful conclusion of the sermon.

  6. Yes, there's one more chapter next week and there is great stuff in there.

  7. But it is more of a P.S. than part of the main argument of the written sermon.

  8. And what you'll see this morning is that the writer gets a bit fired up.

  9. I'll be honest with you, I probably will too.

  10. I've been looking forward to this particular passage since sometime last year when I was planning this sermon series.

  11. And that's just fair warning to you that I'm pretty excited about it.

  12. I told you last week, I'm warning you again.

  13. Just reading it here in a moment should get your heart pumping, okay?

  14. Remember where we are.

  15. We're running by faith in things that we can't see with our eyes yet.

  16. But we're enduring because we're looking to Jesus.

  17. And then we pick up reading at verse 18 of chapter 12.

  18. Indeed, so terrifying was the sight that Moses said,

  19. And I tremble with fear.

  20. But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem,

  21. and to innumerable angels in festal gathering,

  22. and to the assembly of the firstborn who are enrolled in heaven,

  23. and to God, the judge of all,

  24. and to the spirits of the righteous made perfect,

  25. and to Jesus, the mediator of a new covenant,

  26. and to the sprinkled blood that speaks a better word than the blood of Abel.

  27. See that you do not refuse him who is speaking.

  28. For if they did not escape when they refused him who warned them on earth,

  29. much less will we escape if we reject him who warns from heaven.

  30. At that time, his voice shook the earth.

  31. But now he has promised,

  32. Yet once more I will shake not only the earth, but also the heavens.

  33. This phrase, yet once more, indicates the removal of things that are shaken,

  34. that is, things that have been made,

  35. in order that the things that cannot be shaken may remain.

  36. Therefore, let us be grateful for receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken.

  37. And thus, let us offer to God acceptable worship with reverence and awe,

  38. for our God is a consuming fire.

  39. This is the word of God.

  40. Let's ask for his help.

  41. God, we do so need your help.

  42. God, we need you to open our eyes this morning that we would see wonderful things in your word.

  43. Not just that.

  44. God, you know that we need you to change us inside out.

  45. Don't just help us to see and know things.

  46. Help us to grasp with the depths of our being the wonders of who you are and how you love us.

  47. Make us new people.

  48. Bring us into new relationship with you today.

  49. By your word, by your spirit.

  50. We ask in Jesus' name.

  51. Amen.

  52. I brought an object lesson for us this morning.

  53. It's not real pretty.

  54. A lot of dirt.

  55. I also have a helper for us.

  56. Charlotte is going to come up and help me a little bit.

  57. Because you see, you get this ball of dirt.

  58. And, well, there's all sorts of things in there.

  59. But show us what happens when you shake it.

  60. Charlotte's really strong.

  61. So she's going to shake it up for us a little bit.

  62. Yeah?

  63. Shake it harder?

  64. Really, really hard?

  65. Oh, man.

  66. There's a lot of stuff coming off of that, isn't there?

  67. Okay.

  68. Hold on.

  69. Let me see.

  70. Let's get it out and see.

  71. Ooh.

  72. What's all that stuff that came off of it?

  73. What do you see in there?

  74. Dirt and leaves.

  75. Dirt and leaves and sticks just kind of hanging.

  76. What's that?

  77. Play-Doh.

  78. Ugh.

  79. Play-Doh just kind of chunking up.

  80. What color is the Play-Doh?

  81. Green and purple.

  82. Green and purple.

  83. Ugh.

  84. But you shake it.

  85. And the harder you shake it and you kind of beat it around a little bit,

  86. it just kind of breaks off all over the place, doesn't it?

  87. It's not really sticking together anymore.

  88. I tell you what.

  89. That's a lot of Play-Doh.

  90. Let me clean it up for you before I give it to you, okay?

  91. Brought this towel in here to finish the job because Play-Doh is kind of messy.

  92. But hold on.

  93. What's that?

  94. What's that under all the Play-Doh?

  95. A rock?

  96. A rock.

  97. Huh.

  98. There's all sorts of stuff in that big ball of dirt, wasn't there?

  99. Okay.

  100. I tell you what.

  101. I'm going to give you this rock to keep with you during the sermon, okay?

  102. And what I want you to do is I want you to keep shaking it while I'm preaching, okay?

  103. Because I think if you just keep shaking it enough, stuff will keep breaking off and falling all over.

  104. I want you to see if it disappears like all that other stuff, okay?

  105. Can you keep the rock for me?

  106. You keep the rock and just shake it for us and we'll check back in and see how it's going, okay?

  107. Thank you, Charlotte.

  108. She'll come back up in just a minute.

  109. We'll check in on the rock.

  110. I can still feel my hands shaking as I tried to grip a bat walking to the plate in the high school state championship baseball game.

  111. I was usually really confident.

  112. I played a lot of baseball and my whole life had been that.

  113. But all of a sudden, this was different.

  114. The guy was throwing like 90 miles an hour.

  115. Never seen that.

  116. I didn't know if I could keep up with that.

  117. To be honest, I'd never tried.

  118. And if I didn't, we might lose.

  119. And what would that say for me?

  120. I'd be exposed as not good enough.

  121. I can still remember those same hands shaking, sweating, nervous as I prepared to propose to my wife years later.

  122. I was pretty sure that she liked me.

  123. I mean, I'd been a pretty good boyfriend, I thought.

  124. But she was so amazing.

  125. I mean, what if she finally wised up in that moment and realized how far she was out of my league?

  126. And what if the person who knew me best, rather than pulling me in, pushed me away?

  127. That was still a possibility.

  128. That was scary.

  129. Many of us, many days, just kind of coast through life without shaking and trembling.

  130. Maybe you're used to living that way.

  131. But at the same time, we're in an unstable world, aren't we?

  132. Maybe there's some scary experiences that you're going through or that you see around you.

  133. Maybe it's the need to prove ourselves worthy that can all of a sudden make us shake when we don't see it coming.

  134. Or when the bar is suddenly set really high.

  135. We are especially shaken when all of a sudden we encounter the real God.

  136. This passage opens by contrasting two ways of relating to God.

  137. That's really what the verbs that say you have come or you have not come, that's what they mean.

  138. How do you relate to God?

  139. The first way is represented by the mountain you can touch, Mount Sinai,

  140. where the Ten Commandments were given to God's people.

  141. Let me read you just a bit of the background

  142. of this passage out of Exodus 19.

  143. This is right after God brings his people out of Egypt and across the Red Sea

  144. and they come to the foot of Mount Sinai where God tells Moses,

  145. I'm going to meet you there.

  146. Here's what it looks like when he does.

  147. There were thunders and lightnings and a thick cloud on the mountain

  148. and a very loud trumpet blast so that all the people in the camp trembled.

  149. Then Moses brought the people out of the camp to meet God

  150. and they took their stand at the foot of the mountain.

  151. Now just get this picture.

  152. Mount Sinai was wrapped in smoke

  153. because the Lord had descended on it in fire.

  154. The smoke of it went up like the smoke of a kiln

  155. and the whole mountain trembled greatly.

  156. The creation is shaking.

  157. As the sound of the trumpet grew louder and louder,

  158. Moses spoke and God answered him in thunder.

  159. Then in chapter 20,

  160. when all the people saw the thunder and the flashes of lightning

  161. and the sound of the trumpet and the mountain smoking,

  162. the people were afraid.

  163. Yes, can you understand?

  164. And they trembled and they stood far off

  165. and said to Moses,

  166. you speak to us and we'll listen,

  167. but don't let God speak to us lest we die.

  168. The people stood far off

  169. while Moses drew near to the thick darkness where God was.

  170. You see what was going on?

  171. Suddenly people who had felt pretty good about themselves most of the time

  172. a leader who had just stood toe to toe

  173. with the most powerful people in the world,

  174. performing signs and wonders before them.

  175. All of a sudden they are shaking and trembling in fear.

  176. Hebrews highlights seven aspects

  177. of this way of relating to or worshiping God

  178. right here really fast.

  179. The physical mountain that they were kept from touching.

  180. A blazing fire that keeps them back.

  181. Darkness that seems to weigh on them.

  182. Gloom.

  183. That's the spirit they feel.

  184. The storm.

  185. The thunder worse than you've heard in summers in Alabama, I'm sure.

  186. A trumpet blast that is loud and startling.

  187. A frightening voice.

  188. A frightening voice.

  189. So frightening it leads people to beg not to hear it again.

  190. Everyone is shaken.

  191. Terrified.

  192. Even their mediator, their leader, Moses.

  193. The emphasis as I read it,

  194. it's on the people being kept at a distance.

  195. Far off, right?

  196. Far off, out of fear and for their own protection.

  197. Now to be fair to Moses and the Israelites,

  198. they're not wrong about their distance from God's holiness, are they?

  199. God himself is the one who says,

  200. any man or beast who touches the mountain will be killed.

  201. Would you stay far off?

  202. Just to be safe.

  203. Further, being shaken to the core is what tends to happen to people in the Bible

  204. when they encounter God.

  205. I mean, even as righteous a guy as Job,

  206. he was a pretty holy guy,

  207. but he begins to see God for who he is

  208. and he feels small and despises himself

  209. and repents in dust and ashes.

  210. The great prophet Isaiah sees God high and lifted up

  211. and what does he say?

  212. Woe is me!

  213. Unclean!

  214. I'm unclean!

  215. What about the apostle Peter?

  216. Pretty great guy.

  217. He pleads in desperation.

  218. Depart from me.

  219. I'm a sinful man.

  220. That's what happens to even the best of us

  221. when we encounter a holy, holy, holy God.

  222. Someone has to intervene between us and him.

  223. Get him away.

  224. I can't be near him.

  225. In this case, it's Moses.

  226. And he's trembling himself, isn't he?

  227. He's the representative.

  228. See, many of us navigate life

  229. based on performing well enough to measure up.

  230. And then we encounter the holiness of God

  231. and we're shaken.

  232. There's no Play-Doh exterior that holds on in the shaking.

  233. The dirt and the sticks, they don't cling anymore.

  234. All of a sudden, the things that seemed pretty decent start falling off.

  235. And many of us hate that feeling so much.

  236. Either consciously or subconsciously,

  237. we start to relate to God the way these people did at Sinai.

  238. How's that?

  239. Keep your distance, right?

  240. It's safer, really, just to observe church every once in a while.

  241. It's safer, really, just to know some things about Jesus

  242. and to talk about praying.

  243. That feels safe.

  244. It's safer, isn't it, just to bring God up

  245. when we've been doing well or feeling spiritual lately.

  246. So, now maybe I can talk about God.

  247. After all, if it's based on my performance,

  248. deep down, I know that I don't measure up.

  249. I'm finally faced with something harder

  250. than a 90-mile-an-hour fastball.

  251. The majesty of the Creator.

  252. The holiness of the lawgiver.

  253. The justice of the judge.

  254. And I start to get the sense

  255. that the one who knows me best

  256. wants me to keep my distance.

  257. Mostly wants me to know that he's way out of my league.

  258. I'm unworthy of being with him.

  259. Yeah, I was afraid of that.

  260. Charlotte, you still shaking?

  261. Yeah.

  262. Okay, she's working on it.

  263. If you can relate to any of those feelings,

  264. a feeling like God might want you to stay far off,

  265. that you're so unworthy of him

  266. and he's so far beyond you,

  267. you may have even heard us say some of those things this morning

  268. because they're not untrue, are they?

  269. Not entirely.

  270. But God actually wants to change those feelings for you today.

  271. He wants you to experience him very differently.

  272. See, Hebrews says you have not come to that mountain.

  273. In other words, that is not the relationship

  274. that you have with God,

  275. that he desires for you to experience with him.

  276. The Greek says it actually emphasizes this.

  277. The very first word of this whole section is not you have come.

  278. Verse 18, not you have come.

  279. Verse 22, but on the contrary,

  280. you have come.

  281. Where?

  282. To Mount Zion.

  283. Now, maybe that in itself doesn't mean a lot to you.

  284. But we're going to get a seven-point description

  285. of this other way of relating to God

  286. that is entirely in contrast with the first.

  287. What is the feel, the atmosphere,

  288. the experience of coming to this mountain?

  289. Well, it is the heavenly city.

  290. Not merely the created earthly one you touch here,

  291. but the place that God made for his people

  292. to find peace and rest forever.

  293. However, countless angels are there

  294. in what can only be understood

  295. as the most exhilarating party

  296. that you have ever been to.

  297. That's what festal gathering means.

  298. We don't use those words.

  299. It means they are in joyful celebration

  300. all over this mountain

  301. with the assembly,

  302. the church of the firstborn enrolled in heaven.

  303. Now, Jesus is often referred to as the firstborn,

  304. the one who receives the inheritance,

  305. who leads the next generations.

  306. But now, on the mountain,

  307. it's the whole assembly of his people

  308. who get that treatment

  309. because their names are written in heaven.

  310. They're heirs to the kingdom, if you will.

  311. This is from earlier in the chapter,

  312. the cloud of witnesses that has gone before us, right?

  313. They are there rejoicing with the angels,

  314. celebrating all on the mountain.

  315. And then, and then incredibly,

  316. who else is at your party?

  317. There's God himself.

  318. God himself is there,

  319. the judge of all.

  320. Now, that's a turn, isn't it?

  321. How does that fit with all this good news

  322. and celebrating that's going on?

  323. The judge has shown up to ruin the whole thing.

  324. This is our great fear, right?

  325. Judgment.

  326. Shaking.

  327. I'm gonna fall apart.

  328. I'll be ruined.

  329. Except,

  330. except that in this case,

  331. God is here indeed as the judge

  332. who will set all things right

  333. and yet,

  334. we are safe

  335. because the people there

  336. are spirits of the righteous

  337. made perfect.

  338. So, there's nothing

  339. for the judge to hold against them,

  340. to hold against us.

  341. How can that possibly be?

  342. The holy judge is there.

  343. This must be the group

  344. that finally got it all right,

  345. got it together

  346. and performed well enough

  347. to impress the judge.

  348. Is that what happened?

  349. No, you know better than that.

  350. You've read Hebrews.

  351. That's not what's happened.

  352. But before we get to the next two things,

  353. I wanna recognize the tension here.

  354. This is the same God.

  355. He's there in judgment.

  356. Majestic.

  357. Holy.

  358. Just.

  359. There's on this mountain too

  360. fire,

  361. lightning,

  362. thunder.

  363. And yet,

  364. what's the atmosphere?

  365. The atmosphere,

  366. even in spite of that,

  367. there's joy over gloom.

  368. There is wild celebration

  369. instead of darkness.

  370. The people are actually

  371. right there

  372. with the judge,

  373. aren't they?

  374. Instead of far away from him.

  375. What is going on?

  376. How is that possible?

  377. There's a greater mediator here

  378. on this mountain.

  379. Verse 24.

  380. Jesus is there.

  381. The mediator of a new covenant.

  382. In other words,

  383. the representative

  384. who did not tremble

  385. or shake

  386. before the presence

  387. of the holy God,

  388. but walked,

  389. bearing our sin

  390. into the holy place

  391. to take God's wrath

  392. towards sin

  393. upon himself.

  394. Right?

  395. And then he rose

  396. to be our living representative

  397. in the holy place

  398. because he brings us

  399. into a new relationship

  400. with God.

  401. He,

  402. Jesus,

  403. has hushed

  404. the law's loud thunder.

  405. He has quenched

  406. Mount Sinai's flame

  407. toward us

  408. because he took

  409. that wrath

  410. in its fearsome fullness

  411. upon himself.

  412. He has washed us

  413. with his blood.

  414. He has brought us

  415. nigh to God.

  416. Amen?

  417. And he does that,

  418. of course,

  419. by his blood.

  420. His blood is there.

  421. The sprinkled blood

  422. that speaks

  423. a better word

  424. than the blood

  425. of Abel.

  426. Interesting.

  427. God told Cain

  428. when he killed

  429. his brother Abel

  430. that the blood

  431. of his brother

  432. cried out to God

  433. from the ground.

  434. It cried out

  435. for justice

  436. upon Cain.

  437. God told Cain

  438. that he would

  439. certainly be cursed

  440. for shedding

  441. his brother's blood.

  442. What word

  443. does the blood

  444. of Jesus

  445. speak?

  446. Father,

  447. forgive

  448. them.

  449. Mercy

  450. in place

  451. of judgment.

  452. Meaning

  453. that Jesus

  454. bears the curse

  455. so that not only

  456. the soldiers

  457. who nailed him

  458. to the cross

  459. but did not know

  460. what they were doing

  461. but also

  462. we whose sins

  463. held him there

  464. on the cross

  465. would get what?

  466. Blessing

  467. instead of curse.

  468. A better word?

  469. You like that one better?

  470. Amen?

  471. Blessing,

  472. mercy,

  473. forgiveness

  474. is what his blood

  475. speaks to us.

  476. Are you surprised

  477. at this point

  478. in Hebrews

  479. that Jesus

  480. is greater than?

  481. That Jesus

  482. is better?

  483. I hope

  484. you're not

  485. missing that message.

  486. Are you surprised

  487. that it is Jesus

  488. who makes

  489. all the difference

  490. at how we relate

  491. to God?

  492. See,

  493. that's what happens.

  494. The tenor of things

  495. on this mountain

  496. is not this fearful

  497. distance from God

  498. but this joyful

  499. nearness

  500. to him.

  501. you've come

  502. to the mountain

  503. into the city

  504. where God

  505. himself dwells

  506. and you've come

  507. there through the blood

  508. of the eternal

  509. son of God.

  510. No wonder

  511. there's a party

  512. going on,

  513. right?

  514. Who else

  515. would you want

  516. to be with?

  517. This is what

  518. you were made for.

  519. Joyful nearness

  520. to God

  521. and you're

  522. invited in.

  523. God issues

  524. that invitation

  525. to this party.

  526. But there's a warning.

  527. Verse 25.

  528. See that you

  529. do not refuse

  530. him

  531. who is speaking

  532. in Hebrews.

  533. God speaks.

  534. Remember the sermon

  535. started

  536. by reminding us

  537. that in these last days

  538. he has spoken

  539. to us how?

  540. By his son.

  541. That's his great word,

  542. his final invitation.

  543. See that you

  544. don't refuse it

  545. for if they

  546. did not escape

  547. when they refused

  548. him who warned

  549. them on earth

  550. much less

  551. will we escape

  552. if we reject

  553. him who warns

  554. from heaven.

  555. God then promises

  556. to shake

  557. not only the earth

  558. but also

  559. the heavens

  560. in that great day

  561. still to come.

  562. there's going

  563. to be a great

  564. shaking

  565. and only

  566. the things

  567. that can't

  568. be shaken

  569. will remain.

  570. You see

  571. what that means?

  572. It means

  573. friend

  574. if you have

  575. never

  576. trusted

  577. Jesus

  578. run today

  579. to the one

  580. who is

  581. unshakable

  582. and fix

  583. your hope

  584. to him.

  585. He is the

  586. only safe

  587. place.

  588. None of us

  589. measures up

  590. on our own

  591. and yet

  592. you don't have

  593. to run away

  594. from God

  595. you can run

  596. to Jesus

  597. and he brings

  598. you near

  599. to God

  600. safely

  601. so you just

  602. say Jesus

  603. rescue me

  604. Jesus

  605. anchor me

  606. Jesus

  607. hold me

  608. and he will

  609. he will.

  610. Maybe you've

  611. called yourself

  612. a Christian

  613. for a long

  614. time

  615. and you've

  616. been living

  617. distant

  618. from God

  619. for just

  620. as long.

  621. You've been

  622. right there

  623. kind of at the

  624. foot of Mount

  625. Sinai

  626. you know a lot

  627. of good

  628. things that

  629. God's people

  630. are supposed

  631. to do

  632. and you figure

  633. you'll just

  634. try to do

  635. most of them.

  636. You say

  637. you've trusted

  638. Jesus

  639. but you live

  640. as though

  641. you have to

  642. tiptoe

  643. around God

  644. to avoid

  645. his gaze

  646. most of the

  647. time

  648. only talk

  649. to him

  650. when you've

  651. been on

  652. your best

  653. behavior

  654. lately.

  655. Don't

  656. refuse

  657. him

  658. who is

  659. speaking

  660. don't

  661. stay at

  662. a distance

  663. when he

  664. is urging

  665. you

  666. to draw

  667. near.

  668. Perhaps

  669. it's because

  670. you're thinking

  671. that Jesus

  672. is for

  673. after you

  674. die

  675. when you

  676. actually need

  677. him while

  678. you live.

  679. Maybe

  680. you're

  681. realizing

  682. right now

  683. Jesus

  684. for you

  685. has been

  686. a moral

  687. example

  688. but that's

  689. really it

  690. and you realize

  691. that's actually

  692. not enough

  693. for me.

  694. Even with a

  695. great example

  696. I'm not

  697. holy enough

  698. and you realize

  699. that you need

  700. Jesus to be

  701. a bloodshed

  702. sacrifice

  703. for you.

  704. Let me be

  705. as clear as I

  706. can for all

  707. of us.

  708. It's sobering

  709. but you and

  710. I were

  711. created.

  712. We're things

  713. that have

  714. been made.

  715. which God

  716. promises

  717. will be

  718. shaken

  719. and removed

  720. along with

  721. the rest

  722. of the world

  723. as we

  724. know it

  725. leaving

  726. only

  727. the things

  728. that cannot

  729. be shaken.

  730. If that

  731. doesn't

  732. get your

  733. attention

  734. I don't

  735. know what

  736. else to

  737. tell you.

  738. We are

  739. things that

  740. have been

  741. made.

  742. Jesus

  743. was not

  744. made.

  745. He has

  746. always

  747. been.

  748. Therefore

  749. let us

  750. be

  751. grateful

  752. so

  753. grateful

  754. for

  755. receiving

  756. a kingdom

  757. that cannot

  758. be shaken.

  759. God

  760. sends

  761. Jesus

  762. and we

  763. attach

  764. ourselves

  765. by faith

  766. to the

  767. one who

  768. lives

  769. and will

  770. hold

  771. no matter

  772. what shaking

  773. happens

  774. we've

  775. got to

  776. be

  777. connected

  778. to him.

  779. Friends

  780. we

  781. must

  782. must

  783. cling

  784. to

  785. Jesus.

  786. Charlotte

  787. you've been

  788. shaking for

  789. us?

  790. You want to

  791. come on

  792. back up?

  793. Ooh

  794. that's

  795. really

  796. good.

  797. You did

  798. a lot

  799. of

  800. shaking.

  801. It looks

  802. just like

  803. I gave

  804. it to

  805. you.

  806. You didn't

  807. get anything

  808. else off

  809. of it?

  810. Even with

  811. all this

  812. did you

  813. shake it?

  814. Did you

  815. shake it

  816. hard?

  817. And what

  818. is it?

  819. That's the

  820. same rock I

  821. gave you.

  822. Just the

  823. same, huh?

  824. You know a

  825. little play-doh

  826. on the side

  827. but it's a

  828. rock.

  829. You did a

  830. great job.

  831. Thank you

  832. for your

  833. help.

  834. This is a

  835. picture of

  836. the solid

  837. rock of

  838. Christ.

  839. We have

  840. received this

  841. kingdom that

  842. cannot be

  843. shaken.

  844. Maybe you

  845. know from

  846. world history

  847. that even

  848. the greatest

  849. kingdoms

  850. eventually

  851. crumble and

  852. fall when

  853. shaken.

  854. The Roman

  855. Empire around

  856. the time of

  857. this written

  858. sermon fell.

  859. Perhaps

  860. during today's

  861. sermon some

  862. are feeling

  863. shaking in

  864. the USA in

  865. ways that we

  866. haven't before.

  867. Listen, if

  868. Christ tarries,

  869. it will fall

  870. too.

  871. There will

  872. be economic

  873. danger.

  874. There will

  875. be political

  876. danger.

  877. danger.

  878. There may

  879. even be

  880. physical

  881. danger.

  882. But the

  883. kingdom of

  884. Jesus, no

  885. matter what

  886. else comes,

  887. will never

  888. be shaken.

  889. You want to

  890. give your

  891. neighbors,

  892. your kids,

  893. the next

  894. generation,

  895. something that

  896. they can count

  897. on and hold

  898. on to and

  899. that you know

  900. life's going to

  901. be there for

  902. them?

  903. Give them

  904. Jesus.

  905. That's the one

  906. they can count

  907. on.

  908. God.

  909. Because listen,

  910. how does it

  911. end?

  912. Our God is a

  913. consuming fire.

  914. He still is.

  915. That hasn't

  916. changed.

  917. He will shake

  918. and consume.

  919. And so we

  920. worship him with

  921. reverence and

  922. awe because of

  923. his holy

  924. greatness and

  925. because of his

  926. great holiness.

  927. holiness, this

  928. fire of who our

  929. God is would

  930. certainly consume

  931. us on our

  932. own.

  933. But because of

  934. the Lord's

  935. great love, we

  936. are not

  937. consumed.

  938. Because Jesus

  939. is so perfectly

  940. holy himself and

  941. gives himself in

  942. our place, we

  943. can draw near

  944. without being

  945. shaken, without

  946. being burned.

  947. He makes all

  948. the difference.

  949. He is a sure

  950. and steadfast

  951. anchor for our

  952. souls, the

  953. greater rest, the

  954. greater sacrifice,

  955. the greater

  956. priest, the

  957. only man not

  958. made.

  959. So he can

  960. bring us to

  961. and keep us in

  962. the presence of

  963. God, on the

  964. joyful mountain of

  965. God, in the

  966. safety of God

  967. forever.

  968. forever.

  969. He can and

  970. will do that.

  971. And so that's

  972. something to look

  973. forward to, right?

  974. Absolutely.

  975. Forever.

  976. But according to

  977. this passage, it's

  978. actually something

  979. more than that.

  980. It is something to

  981. live in right

  982. now.

  983. It's this verb

  984. tense that

  985. means, yes, you'll

  986. be there forever,

  987. but you have

  988. come already

  989. to this

  990. mountain and

  991. the great

  992. celebration and

  993. the blood of your

  994. Savior cleansing

  995. you before God,

  996. the judge.

  997. You have an

  998. unshakable

  999. kingdom led

  1000. by an unshaken

  1001. king with an

  1002. imperishable

  1003. inheritance, an

  1004. unfading crown

  1005. of glory in an

  1006. invulnerable

  1007. place through

  1008. his unfailing

  1009. love.

  1010. You have

  1011. that.

  1012. See, his

  1013. kingdom that

  1014. cannot be shaken

  1015. means the

  1016. life of heaven,

  1017. the life of

  1018. eternity is

  1019. already alive

  1020. in us.

  1021. By our union

  1022. with Christ,

  1023. the kingdom,

  1024. he says, is

  1025. already in

  1026. our midst

  1027. its righteousness

  1028. and joy

  1029. and peace

  1030. in the Holy

  1031. Spirit.

  1032. Mine are

  1033. keys to

  1034. Zion City

  1035. where beside

  1036. the king

  1037. I walk

  1038. today.

  1039. So,

  1040. so tell me

  1041. practically,

  1042. pastor,

  1043. how, how do

  1044. I live

  1045. unshaken

  1046. when everything

  1047. I hold dear

  1048. seems to be

  1049. shaking?

  1050. well, when

  1051. diseases ravage

  1052. me and

  1053. those I

  1054. love,

  1055. the unshakable

  1056. kingdom says

  1057. my greatest

  1058. disease, the

  1059. sin of my

  1060. soul that

  1061. runs all

  1062. through me

  1063. has been

  1064. forgiven and

  1065. cured so that

  1066. I will live

  1067. forever no

  1068. matter what

  1069. happens.

  1070. when financial

  1071. disaster hits

  1072. and I begin

  1073. to wobble,

  1074. the unshakable

  1075. kingdom says

  1076. my greatest

  1077. debt has been

  1078. paid once

  1079. and for all

  1080. so my good

  1081. shepherd will

  1082. make sure I

  1083. have everything

  1084. that I need.

  1085. When I'm lonely

  1086. or persecuted,

  1087. I lean into the

  1088. family of God

  1089. that I've been

  1090. welcomed into.

  1091. When I'm weak

  1092. and unable to

  1093. handle the task

  1094. before me,

  1095. I draw on the

  1096. power of the

  1097. Holy Spirit

  1098. already present

  1099. in me.

  1100. It happens

  1101. over and over

  1102. and over in

  1103. all these

  1104. situations.

  1105. How do I

  1106. live unshaken

  1107. when I'm so

  1108. fearful about

  1109. life all

  1110. around me?

  1111. It's just

  1112. been a few

  1113. years, Will,

  1114. there was a

  1115. pandemic and

  1116. then more

  1117. terror attacks

  1118. and then wars

  1119. and then there's

  1120. all this unrest

  1121. and division.

  1122. Are you kidding

  1123. me?

  1124. There's no

  1125. stability anywhere.

  1126. What's next?

  1127. I'm worried.

  1128. Friend, if God

  1129. is for us,

  1130. who can stand

  1131. against us?

  1132. You have come

  1133. already to the

  1134. mountain with

  1135. Him and He

  1136. won't let you

  1137. go.

  1138. When you're

  1139. shaken to your

  1140. core, and you

  1141. will be.

  1142. The loss of a

  1143. loved one,

  1144. professional

  1145. failure,

  1146. a child

  1147. wandering,

  1148. divorce,

  1149. depression,

  1150. dementia,

  1151. you feel like

  1152. you're drowning,

  1153. you think you'll

  1154. be utterly

  1155. destroyed,

  1156. and the

  1157. unshakable

  1158. kingdom says

  1159. nothing can

  1160. separate you

  1161. from the love

  1162. of God in

  1163. Christ Jesus

  1164. our Lord.

  1165. Lord, you

  1166. are more

  1167. than conquerors.

  1168. You possess

  1169. a kingdom

  1170. that cannot

  1171. be shaken.

  1172. That's why

  1173. we say

  1174. with Jim

  1175. Elliot,

  1176. he is no

  1177. fool who

  1178. gives what

  1179. he cannot

  1180. keep to

  1181. gain what

  1182. he cannot

  1183. lose.

  1184. When you've

  1185. got the

  1186. unshakable

  1187. kingdom

  1188. because of

  1189. your trust

  1190. in the

  1191. unshakable

  1192. king,

  1193. no one

  1194. and nothing

  1195. can take

  1196. that away,

  1197. and you

  1198. become more

  1199. and more

  1200. eager to live

  1201. that way

  1202. right now,

  1203. to live

  1204. in that

  1205. joyful

  1206. nearness

  1207. to that

  1208. God,

  1209. to be with

  1210. him as

  1211. often as

  1212. you possibly

  1213. can,

  1214. worshiping

  1215. him with

  1216. overflowing

  1217. gratitude.

  1218. I mean,

  1219. there's got to

  1220. be even

  1221. more than

  1222. that,

  1223. right?

  1224. You're not

  1225. just a little

  1226. thankful.

  1227. It's like

  1228. every part

  1229. of me is

  1230. grateful.

  1231. How else

  1232. could I

  1233. worship?

  1234. I don't have

  1235. to come in

  1236. here to do

  1237. it.

  1238. It flows

  1239. for me

  1240. every day,

  1241. dancing in

  1242. the aisles

  1243. with holy

  1244. awe.

  1245. How is

  1246. it that I

  1247. can know

  1248. this God?

  1249. Praise

  1250. Jesus.

  1251. Brothers and

  1252. sisters,

  1253. we have

  1254. come

  1255. already

  1256. to the

  1257. kingdom

  1258. that cannot

  1259. be shaken,

  1260. to Mount

  1261. Zion,

  1262. to the

  1263. rock of

  1264. Christ.

  1265. On

  1266. Christ,

  1267. the solid

  1268. rock,

  1269. I stand.

  1270. All other

  1271. ground is

  1272. sinking

  1273. sand,

  1274. and there

  1275. will be

  1276. plenty of

  1277. chances to

  1278. experience that,

  1279. to be shaken

  1280. in this

  1281. world.

  1282. The waves

  1283. of persecution,

  1284. of pain,

  1285. of problems

  1286. in life

  1287. will threaten

  1288. to wash

  1289. you away,

  1290. but listen

  1291. to the good

  1292. news.

  1293. You are

  1294. not there

  1295. desperately

  1296. trying to

  1297. climb up

  1298. to that

  1299. rock to

  1300. get to

  1301. the top

  1302. of that

  1303. mountain.

  1304. You're not

  1305. scrambling

  1306. as the

  1307. waves wash

  1308. over you

  1309. to find

  1310. footing for

  1311. your feet,

  1312. some solid

  1313. ground that

  1314. will hold

  1315. you.

  1316. No,

  1317. we have

  1318. come to

  1319. Mount Zion.

  1320. On

  1321. Christ,

  1322. the solid

  1323. rock,

  1324. we stand

  1325. with innumerable

  1326. angels,

  1327. with the

  1328. firstborn

  1329. enrolled in

  1330. heaven,

  1331. with God,

  1332. the judge

  1333. of all,

  1334. making all

  1335. things right,

  1336. including our

  1337. struggling spirits

  1338. that he has

  1339. already made

  1340. perfect.

  1341. Thanks to

  1342. Jesus and

  1343. his blood

  1344. speaking blessing

  1345. to us,

  1346. you're already

  1347. there on

  1348. that rock.

  1349. Y'all,

  1350. Jesus is

  1351. greater than

  1352. anything else

  1353. that we

  1354. might hope

  1355. would hold

  1356. us.

  1357. The entire

  1358. earth and

  1359. heavens will

  1360. shake one

  1361. day, but

  1362. you have

  1363. already received

  1364. the kingdom

  1365. that cannot

  1366. be shaken.

  1367. God,

  1368. praise you,

  1369. thank you,

  1370. you're holy

  1371. and you're

  1372. gracious.

  1373. Everything

  1374. else is

  1375. sinking sand,

  1376. be warned.

  1377. Don't grab

  1378. on to

  1379. something

  1380. else,

  1381. but on

  1382. Christ,

  1383. the solid

  1384. rock,

  1385. you stand.

  1386. You will

  1387. not be

  1388. shaken

  1389. because he

  1390. will not

  1391. be shaken.

  1392. Thank you,

  1393. Jesus.

  1394. Thank you,

  1395. Jesus.

  1396. We want

  1397. to thank

  1398. him

  1399. together now.

  1400. I want

  1401. to give

  1402. you a chance

  1403. to draw

  1404. near to

  1405. him,

  1406. even in

  1407. this moment

  1408. as you

  1409. hear him

  1410. saying,

  1411. this is

  1412. how you

  1413. come.

  1414. You come

  1415. through me.

  1416. As we

  1417. have our

  1418. worship team

  1419. come back

  1420. up and

  1421. as we get

  1422. ready to

  1423. stand and

  1424. sing this

  1425. last song,

  1426. we're also

  1427. going to

  1428. have some

  1429. of our

  1430. elders and

  1431. men and

  1432. women on

  1433. our prayer

  1434. team.

  1435. They're going

  1436. to come

  1437. down front

  1438. and they'll

  1439. also be in

  1440. the back if

  1441. that's more

  1442. comfortable for

  1443. you.

  1444. They'd love a

  1445. chance to

  1446. pray with

  1447. you for

  1448. just a minute.

  1449. sing about

  1450. Christ,

  1451. the solid

  1452. rock on

  1453. whom we

  1454. stand and

  1455. maybe for

  1456. the very

  1457. first time

  1458. in your

  1459. life you're

  1460. saying,

  1461. that's the

  1462. one I

  1463. need.

  1464. Please

  1465. come,

  1466. we'd love

  1467. to pray

  1468. with you.

  1469. Or maybe

  1470. you've been

  1471. there and

  1472. you've been

  1473. standing on

  1474. him and

  1475. you realize

  1476. you haven't

  1477. been able to

  1478. find him

  1479. lately and

  1480. life's hard

  1481. and you felt

  1482. like you're

  1483. going under

  1484. or you know

  1485. something that's

  1486. coming up and

  1487. you'd like us

  1488. to pray for

  1489. you because

  1490. it's coming

  1491. in the future.

  1492. We would

  1493. love to be

  1494. able to do

  1495. that.

  1496. Let's

  1497. stand together

  1498. and sing and

  1499. I invite you

  1500. to go ahead

  1501. and start

  1502. coming forward

  1503. or back and

  1504. we'll just

  1505. take just a

  1506. quick minute

  1507. to pray with

  1508. you even

  1509. as we sing.
