  1. I suspect that all of you have heard or seen or tasted some very American things this weekend.

  2. ! Yes, hamburgers. Anybody? Hamburger? Fireworks? Oh, okay. Whether you wanted to or not, didn't you?

  3. Flags all over the place. All in celebration of the 250th anniversary of our independence, right?

  4. That, in case you're confused, is why you haven't seen any kings being celebrated.

  5. It just hasn't been going on this weekend. It is at the heart of our nation that nobody tells us what to do.

  6. Especially if you think you're going to tax us without representation. We will dump all your tea in the ocean.

  7. It wasn't even sweet tea. It's no big deal.

  8. If there's anything that we Americans love, it's our freedom, isn't it?

  9. We love to make our own decisions with no restrictions.

  10. It used to be, when I was a kid, 31 flavors of ice cream was really exciting.

  11. Now, we have hundreds of them.

  12. And you can combine them however you would like and just put them all together.

  13. You can have all the options you want.

  14. It used to be, when I was a kid, if you had a hundred channels to choose from on your TV,

  15. your house was the one everybody wanted to go to because that was a lot of options.

  16. Some of you remember fewer than a hundred.

  17. Now, now we have dozens of streaming services and every single one of them has thousands of options

  18. that you can watch whatever you want to, whenever you want to.

  19. You don't even have to wait for it to come on.

  20. You just pick it when you want.

  21. Young people feel that they have freedom when they can choose what to do, what to watch.

  22. When they start driving and go where they want, when they want, that seems like freedom, right?

  23. Sixteen-year-olds.

  24. The one thing in our society that you better not touch these days is our freedom.

  25. Having autonomous choices to run our own lives, how we want to run them, is such an assumed good for us

  26. that we often don't even question its priority.

  27. Nobody can challenge that, right?

  28. You do you.

  29. That's how we work.

  30. And then we hear about Christianity.

  31. Christianity.

  32. And there's so many rules in Christianity that we have to group them into lists of ten just to keep track of them.

  33. And many people start to feel that these restrictions are what the Bible is all about.

  34. For example, telling me to exercise my sexuality only with my spouse.

  35. Telling me not to lie or cheat or steal, but to love my neighbor because everyone else is as valuable as I am,

  36. even when that's inconvenient.

  37. Telling me to give money to God and to be generous toward others when I've got so many options and ideas for what to do with it.

  38. Isn't Christianity restrictive of my freedom?

  39. Many ask that, right?

  40. Many feel that way.

  41. So many have dismissed Christianity on this account.

  42. That it fails the test of freedom.

  43. That it restricts my flexibility to control my life and live it the way I want.

  44. That it just generally cramps my style.

  45. It's not cool.

  46. Who needs it after all?

  47. I'll let Jesus know if I ever need his help.

  48. I'll tell him.

  49. But not usually.

  50. Not seriously.

  51. Well, as it turns out, Jesus has a lot to say about freedom.

  52. In fact, when Jesus introduces himself publicly, he reads from the prophet Isaiah about someone coming to proclaim freedom for the captives and liberty for the oppressed.

  53. He's going to set people free.

  54. He says.

  55. He says.

  56. Today, I want to focus on a conversation Jesus has with some religious people in John chapter 8.

    John 8 chapter mention

  57. Where Jesus seeks to clarify some faulty assumptions that they have about freedom.

  58. Some misunderstandings that he is quite clear could be disastrous if they are not corrected.

  59. He wants better for them than what they are experiencing.

  60. And he wants better for us too.

  61. Which is really exciting.

  62. As we open his word together.

  63. Let's read some of this back and forth that they have in this conversation.

  64. And then we'll discuss what we learn from Jesus about freedom.

  65. This is John 8.

  66. Starting at verse 31.

  67. God's holy word.

  68. God's holy word.

  69. Everyone who commits sin is a slave to sin.

  70. The slave does not remain in the house forever.

  71. The son remains forever.

  72. So if the son sets you free.

  73. You will be free.

  74. Indeed.

  75. Thus far God's holy word.

  76. Let's pray.

  77. Jesus, would you indeed this morning set us free.

  78. Would you do it by your truth.

  79. You tell us as we know the truth.

  80. As we know you will find this freedom.

  81. So set us free by your truth.

  82. Your word is truth.

  83. Use it to challenge even the most basic assumptions of our hearts and our culture.

  84. And give us hope and joy and purpose this morning.

  85. I pray that you would do that by your spirit.

  86. Amen.

  87. One of the first things you notice in this passage that I just read is Jesus is offering freedom to people who think they already have it.

  88. Right?

  89. He's explaining how to get free to people who think they already are.

  90. Jesus, what do you even mean you will become free?

  91. We've never been slaves.

  92. Interesting comment, isn't it?

  93. From Jews presently under the rule of Rome.

  94. Whose ancestors have been slaves in Babylon.

  95. Further back than that in Egypt.

  96. But see their belief was that as descendants of Abraham and Isaac and Jacob.

  97. They were royalty.

  98. No matter what they were actually going through.

  99. They were never really under the control of anyone else.

  100. Just by their own status.

  101. Their own way of functioning.

  102. They considered themselves free.

  103. But Jesus wants them and us to know that that's not really the case.

  104. That in fact anyone who sins is a slave to sin.

  105. In other words he's saying our natural condition.

  106. Just being American for example.

  107. Just being able to choose without someone restricting our options.

  108. Does not make us really free.

  109. It's actually the slavery that you put yourself in.

  110. He's showing them when you rely on your own performance to get your free status.

  111. When we think that we can give ourselves freedom.

  112. We don't realize the slavery that we actually face naturally.

  113. It's what Paul warns the Galatians about.

  114. He says don't fall back into slavery.

  115. By feeling you control even one piece of your lives.

  116. One part of being good enough for God.

  117. In the case of the Galatians it was circumcision.

  118. Right?

  119. He says if you require that.

  120. If that's something you bring to the table.

  121. You'll have to follow the whole law.

  122. If you get bound to your own history.

  123. To your own ethnicity.

  124. To your own performance.

  125. In order to be free.

  126. Then you're stuck fighting that battle forever.

  127. To be good enough.

  128. To be free enough.

  129. Do you see it's actually enslaving.

  130. Even our culture's idea of freedom.

  131. That I was discussing earlier.

  132. Ends up being counterfeit.

  133. This freedom that we think that we have.

  134. Is classically referred to as the freedom of contrary choice.

  135. Options.

  136. Right?

  137. A freedom from any restrictions.

  138. To choose whatever our hearts desire.

  139. Except that that's where it gets complicated.

  140. Our desires are actually part of the enslavement.

  141. The bondage.

  142. Rather than the freedom.

  143. We get that confused.

  144. Because see we so often have conflicting desires.

  145. Don't we?

  146. And those leave us stuck.

  147. When we insist that there are no restrictions on them.

  148. No restrictions on any of our desires.

  149. Except that they conflict with one another.

  150. Let me give you a couple examples.

  151. It's true physically.

  152. I have a deep desire to eat sweet things all the time.

  153. Just trust me.

  154. It's deep.

  155. And I have a desire to live a long and healthy life.

  156. And not to have to buy new size of clothes.

  157. Because I hate that.

  158. And those are conflicting desires.

  159. Right?

  160. Right?

  161. And we experience it emotionally.

  162. We want to be accepted for who we are.

  163. And we want to be thought extraordinary.

  164. And worthy by many people.

  165. Because of something special we do.

  166. Which desire will win?

  167. These desires famously conflict relationally.

  168. We desire to be promiscuous in love with anyone we want and find ourselves attracted to.

  169. Don't we?

  170. We desire to experience love with you.

  171. We desire to experience love that we can count on.

  172. Conflicting desires.

  173. You can't have them all with no restrictions on any of them.

  174. They don't work together.

  175. Another example from a different angle maybe.

  176. Kids, have you seen fish kept in an aquarium before?

  177. You know, in one of those glass boxes?

  178. Like some of you maybe even at your own house?

  179. Yeah, you've seen fish like that.

  180. And sometimes you see the fish swimming around in the water in that aquarium.

  181. And you wish that that fish could be free to swim in a pond or a lake or the ocean.

  182. Right?

  183. Just more room to roam.

  184. More freedom for the fish.

  185. Some of you, I've heard, have even thought it would be great if that fish could come sit on the sofa and watch TV with you.

  186. Does that sound like freedom for the fish?

  187. I mean, watching TV on the sofa is a pretty cool thing, right?

  188. Huh.

  189. Maybe, you know what you enjoy in the summer?

  190. Playing in the sand and building sandcastles.

  191. Would that be a free thing for the fish to do?

  192. Or maybe lying in the sun and getting a tan.

  193. The fish could do that with you, right?

  194. It would be free if the fish had that option.

  195. But think about it, kids.

  196. If you give the fish freedom from that water that he's trapped in in the aquarium,

  197. that freedom's not going to go very well, is it?

  198. He's not going to be able to live very long.

  199. He really won't know true freedom because true freedom is not merely the absence of restrictions,

  200. but actually finding the right conditions or restrictions where one can thrive.

  201. I'll be honest.

  202. I'm not a big fan of red lights, personally, when I'm driving.

  203. They feel restrictive.

  204. They keep me from where I want to be going in the time I want to get there.

  205. But see, it's just one example of a restriction on my life that actually,

  206. when I live in that reality, it can be really freeing and life-giving

  207. because when the light changes, I can actually relax and drive with confidence when it's my turn.

  208. The freedom of contrary choice sounds appealing to us often,

  209. but our desires really complicate that idea.

  210. It's why Galatians 5 says,

  211. You were called to freedom, but don't use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh,

  212. or your translation may say,

  213. to indulge the sinful nature, the sinful desires.

  214. You'll find that's not freedom at all.

  215. When you try just to live however you want in every moment,

  216. to feel free, you'll find you don't.

  217. Jesus is telling us our desires are naturally bound by sin.

  218. So something needs to be done to us besides just turning us loose with our desires

  219. if we are going to be truly free.

  220. Otherwise, we will be fish out of water.

  221. Maybe the one who made us will understand how we best function freely.

  222. Maybe he can help.

  223. Theologian D.A. Carson writes about Jesus' explanation of freedom here in John 8.

  224. True freedom is not the liberty to do anything we please,

  225. no restrictions,

  226. but the liberty to do what we ought.

  227. And it is genuine liberty because doing what we ought now pleases us.

  228. We'll unpack that last part in a bit as we go.

  229. But it's important for all of us to hear Jesus say,

  230. don't get confused into thinking you have freedom without me.

  231. No.

  232. You may have something,

  233. but it's not the real thing.

  234. American brothers and sisters,

  235. we're not truly free without Jesus.

  236. That's what he's saying.

  237. Would you look with me at the freedom Jesus offers

  238. and why it's so different from just options, choices,

  239. directing myself,

  240. especially if you've never really given Jesus' message much attention.

  241. I'd urge you to hear what he has to say.

  242. Back to verse 34.

  243. Jesus answered them,

  244. truly, truly, I say to you,

  245. everyone who commits sin is a slave to sin.

  246. The slave does not remain in the house forever.

  247. The son remains forever.

  248. So if the son sets you free,

  249. you will be free indeed.

  250. Notice the differences in the freedom that Jesus offers here.

  251. First, his freedom is received rather than achieved.

  252. When the son sets you free,

  253. someone gives you a gift.

  254. Someone does something for you.

  255. Someone tags your hand when you're frozen in the game of freeze tag

  256. so that you can move again and play.

  257. And this difference is monumental when you talk about freedom

  258. because it means it's not all based on you.

  259. Your performance doesn't have to keep up.

  260. Your desires don't have to sort out.

  261. Your consistency doesn't have to hold up all the time in order to be free.

  262. No, he gives you freedom right where you are.

  263. Freedom in his performance

  264. so that you're actually free from your failures

  265. and from relying on your good works

  266. to keep up your success.

  267. with just that one new reality,

  268. can you feel yourself starting to breathe again?

  269. Maybe like a fish thrown back into water.

  270. It's not all on me.

  271. I'm now living in an environment

  272. where his performance makes me free

  273. from the bad stuff and the good stuff.

  274. Maybe Jesus knows what you were made for.

  275. Jesus graces you with the gift of life,

  276. of freedom.

  277. And because it's received rather than achieved,

  278. you can know that it's permanent

  279. rather than contingent.

  280. Jesus is saying here in verse 35,

  281. you need to be adopted

  282. to become a son in the Father's house

  283. because then you're never leaving, right?

  284. No one can kick you out

  285. or snatch you away from him

  286. or cause you to lose his love.

  287. You're his son.

  288. If you go on reading the rest of this interaction

  289. in chapter eight, it's quite long,

  290. but you'll find out that Jesus

  291. is warning these religious people

  292. that they are just slaves and not sons

  293. if he hasn't set them free.

  294. Not the way they were born.

  295. Not something they assume about themselves.

  296. If Jesus hasn't come to set them free,

  297. then they're still slaves.

  298. They may do some stuff for God.

  299. They may hang around God's house a lot,

  300. especially on Sundays.

  301. But they're not sons

  302. because they're not trusting Jesus for freedom.

  303. They still don't realize the slavery

  304. that they're living in.

  305. So this is a warning for them and for us.

  306. That's how serious it is for us to miss

  307. the bondage that we're born in

  308. and our need for Jesus's rescue.

  309. You might be enslaved and never realize it.

  310. And so how could you be set free?

  311. See how this gracious freedom we receive from Jesus

  312. is freedom that can never be lost?

  313. Because even if another nation conquers us,

  314. even if we get lost in our conflicted desires,

  315. even if we realize that we haven't done well enough,

  316. we don't even impress ourselves,

  317. we're still free.

  318. We're still in the family.

  319. Our debts have all been paid.

  320. Our eternity has been purchased and secured.

  321. We're not punished for our performance.

  322. You're free.

  323. That kind of freedom resonates with my heart.

  324. I bet it does with yours too.

  325. The reason it does

  326. is because it's actually freedom in relationship

  327. rather than mere independence.

  328. This is huge.

  329. I want to try to explain it.

  330. See, freedom of contrary choice,

  331. that secular freedom from restrictions

  332. is only freedom from something.

  333. Then, what are you left with?

  334. Yourself.

  335. You're alone.

  336. Jesus' freedom

  337. is freedom from something,

  338. sin,

  339. self,

  340. performing to earn your place,

  341. and

  342. it's freedom

  343. for something,

  344. towards something,

  345. for living in relationship

  346. with the God who made you

  347. and knows exactly

  348. what's the water you were made to live in.

  349. Listen, here's the difference.

  350. Jesus didn't come merely

  351. to make bad people good

  352. by giving us some better restrictions

  353. so that we'd follow the right rules.

  354. No.

  355. No, Jesus came

  356. to make dead people alive

  357. because he knows

  358. how we were made to live

  359. and he doesn't want any of us

  360. to miss out

  361. on that glorious freedom,

  362. being free indeed

  363. because he makes us so.

  364. See, Jesus knows what you're made for.

  365. Jesus knows you were made

  366. to breathe the air of heaven,

  367. heaven,

  368. of loving relationship

  369. with Father,

  370. Son,

  371. and Spirit

  372. in every corner

  373. of his glorious relationship.

  374. You're to breathe that air

  375. in that relationship.

  376. And Jesus knew

  377. that our performance,

  378. even with the best

  379. of our desires,

  380. was never going to be enough

  381. to get us back

  382. into that perfect

  383. and joyous place.

  384. So what did he do?

  385. Jesus invaded

  386. our confusion.

  387. Jesus, if you listen

  388. to his words

  389. when he's here,

  390. agonized over having us

  391. home with him.

  392. He pled with his father

  393. that he might have the joy

  394. of welcoming us

  395. back to the family.

  396. He even went so far

  397. as to endure

  398. our punishment

  399. so that we prodigals

  400. who left our father's house

  401. to chase our own desires

  402. could be adopted

  403. back into the family,

  404. could be sons

  405. in the father's house

  406. who never leave

  407. because he knew

  408. that when we got there,

  409. we would love the father

  410. so much that we would

  411. delight in his freedom

  412. because following

  413. the house rules,

  414. so to speak,

  415. doing what we ought

  416. would finally then be

  417. what now pleases us.

  418. We would have true freedom.

  419. Did Jesus want us to know

  420. the freedom from God?

  421. Independence from God?

  422. No way.

  423. Friend, that kind of freedom

  424. will ultimately leave you alone

  425. and isolated

  426. and you'll be searching

  427. for people whose desires

  428. you always affirm

  429. and who always affirm

  430. your desires,

  431. whether you realize that or not,

  432. and it won't work.

  433. It'll never last.

  434. But this freedom

  435. in relationship,

  436. it will.

  437. It's a gift of grace

  438. so you won't lose it

  439. and you'll never enjoy it

  440. apart from knowing the giver.

  441. You're living in dependence

  442. upon him.

  443. It's entirely different.

  444. I'm pretty sure

  445. that I have said

  446. more than I understand

  447. where my mind can grasp.

  448. So let me just back up

  449. and look at John 8 again.

  450. A slave

  451. does not remain

  452. in the house

  453. forever.

  454. That's a problem.

  455. You're not in the relationship

  456. with the father

  457. forever

  458. if that's where you stay.

  459. But a son does.

  460. Something needs to change

  461. so that you can stay

  462. in that relationship.

  463. And when the son Jesus

  464. sets you free,

  465. when he makes you a son,

  466. you will be free

  467. indeed.

  468. That's all a version

  469. of answering our question today

  470. by saying,

  471. isn't Christianity

  472. restrictive of my freedom?

  473. No.

  474. No, Christianity

  475. is not restrictive

  476. of your freedom

  477. but actually offers you

  478. true and full

  479. and lasting freedom.

  480. The kind of freedom

  481. you're actually longing for.

  482. But as we close,

  483. I want to offer

  484. a different answer

  485. and a different angle

  486. on this question.

  487. Isn't Christianity

  488. restrictive of my freedom?

  489. I think some of you

  490. are saying,

  491. you're kidding yourself.

  492. I've experienced it.

  493. It is restrictive

  494. of my freedom

  495. and let me tell you how

  496. and maybe you can come

  497. afterwards

  498. and tell me

  499. how you've experienced that.

  500. But I want to give you

  501. an answer

  502. that agrees with you

  503. at some level.

  504. An answer that says,

  505. yes, it does restrict

  506. your freedom

  507. of contrary choice.

  508. but in the most

  509. beautiful,

  510. life-giving,

  511. purpose-filled way.

  512. This requires us

  513. to understand

  514. that Christianity

  515. is not merely

  516. or primarily

  517. a list of rules

  518. which, friends,

  519. if you read the Bible

  520. with any intellectual honesty,

  521. you'll realize

  522. very soon.

  523. It contains rules

  524. but it's primarily

  525. a story about God.

  526. About a God

  527. that I just described

  528. as being perfectly free,

  529. perfectly happy,

  530. perfectly fulfilled,

  531. who had every right

  532. to live for himself

  533. in uninterrupted peace

  534. and unlimited prosperity.

  535. That God

  536. who nonetheless

  537. gave up his freedom.

  538. His freedom to live

  539. just for himself

  540. with no restrictions.

  541. He gave that up

  542. in order to sacrifice himself

  543. for us.

  544. And this is,

  545. as you start to read that

  546. in this story,

  547. you realize you're reading

  548. a love story

  549. rather than a mere rule book.

  550. In fact,

  551. it's the greatest

  552. kind of love story

  553. where the strong hero

  554. fights his way

  555. to cross heaven

  556. and earth

  557. to rescue

  558. the undeserving one

  559. that he loves

  560. even when the beloved

  561. is unsure

  562. she wants anything

  563. to do with him.

  564. His love

  565. eventually

  566. overwhelms her.

  567. In time,

  568. it earns her love.

  569. It inspires

  570. her love

  571. in return.

  572. See, friends,

  573. listen to the good news

  574. of Jesus.

  575. It's not merely

  576. that he was willing

  577. to sacrifice

  578. his freedom

  579. to come live

  580. and die in our place

  581. because of the great love

  582. with which he loved us,

  583. although that is wonderful enough.

  584. Amen?

  585. He did do that.

  586. But actually,

  587. the good news of Jesus

  588. is he knew

  589. that kind of love

  590. was the water

  591. that we needed

  592. to live in.

  593. See,

  594. for people

  595. being put

  596. in a relationship

  597. of love

  598. like that

  599. is like finding

  600. a fish

  601. stuck on the sand

  602. and quickly

  603. pushing it back

  604. into the water.

  605. You can breathe again.

  606. You can live

  607. again there.

  608. See,

  609. God's love for us

  610. in Jesus

  611. sets us free,

  612. sets us free

  613. to live,

  614. sets us free

  615. to live

  616. for him.

  617. Free,

  618. in fact,

  619. then,

  620. if you're living

  621. for him,

  622. to give up

  623. our freedom

  624. of contrary choice.

  625. You see,

  626. I've found

  627. the one thing

  628. that is truly

  629. worth living for.

  630. In fact,

  631. the one person

  632. truly worth living for.

  633. I'll sell

  634. everything else

  635. to have this treasure.

  636. I'll deny myself,

  637. Jesus.

  638. I'll take up

  639. my cross daily.

  640. I will surrender.

  641. All to live

  642. with you.

  643. That's

  644. where I start

  645. to breathe.

  646. That's such

  647. good news.

  648. Christian,

  649. listen,

  650. you have been

  651. set free

  652. not merely

  653. to watch

  654. fireworks

  655. and eat

  656. ice cream

  657. and dream

  658. of a job

  659. and a white

  660. picket fence

  661. and two and a half

  662. kids

  663. and early

  664. retirement.

  665. Oh,

  666. it's so much

  667. better.

  668. Let me lift

  669. your eyes.

  670. You've been

  671. set free

  672. to love,

  673. to love,

  674. even to give

  675. yourselves

  676. then to others

  677. to reflect

  678. the glory

  679. of the one

  680. who gave himself

  681. for you.

  682. Remember the true

  683. freedom

  684. that Jesus

  685. gives us?

  686. Don't use your freedom,

  687. God says,

  688. to indulge

  689. sinful desires.

  690. Jesus

  691. died to kill

  692. those

  693. so they don't

  694. please us anymore.

  695. Rather,

  696. what?

  697. What pleases

  698. us?

  699. Through

  700. love,

  701. serve

  702. one

  703. another.

  704. Love

  705. your neighbor

  706. as yourself.

  707. As your neighbor,

  708. Jesus

  709. loves

  710. you.

  711. He said,

  712. there's a purpose

  713. worth living

  714. your entire

  715. life for.

  716. The Christian

  717. dream

  718. of love,

  719. unbounded,

  720. unbroken,

  721. and unending,

  722. and y'all,

  723. you just get to go

  724. crazy there.

  725. That's the freedom

  726. you get with Jesus.

  727. His laws don't

  728. restrict your freedom,

  729. they give you

  730. life.

  731. So find a friend

  732. to astonish

  733. with the pursuing,

  734. generous,

  735. forgiving,

  736. listening,

  737. laughing,

  738. persistent

  739. nature

  740. of your love.

  741. Cry

  742. with

  743. a grieving

  744. neighbor.

  745. Throw a party

  746. for a lonely

  747. widow.

  748. Adopt

  749. an orphan.

  750. Rearrange

  751. your life

  752. and your schedule

  753. for 50 years

  754. for a spouse.

  755. Pay your

  756. employee better

  757. than you pay

  758. yourself.

  759. Watch

  760. as you do

  761. these things

  762. and a bunch

  763. of others

  764. your marriage

  765. or your family

  766. or your neighborhood

  767. or your city

  768. transform

  769. because of

  770. love.

  771. Restrict

  772. our freedom?

  773. Are you

  774. kidding me?

  775. Go

  776. crazy with this,

  777. Jesus says.

  778. You're free

  779. in my love

  780. to do all

  781. of these things.

  782. Oh,

  783. Jesus,

  784. please restrict

  785. me from living

  786. only for myself.

  787. I need that

  788. because that's

  789. not the dream.

  790. the real dream

  791. that you were

  792. made for.

  793. The real story

  794. you were made

  795. to live in

  796. is of living

  797. in this

  798. love

  799. with all

  800. your kids,

  801. with everyone

  802. else you can

  803. love into this

  804. family from

  805. every tribe,

  806. tongue,

  807. language,

  808. and nation

  809. starting today,

  810. lasting forever

  811. with the God

  812. who made you

  813. and set you

  814. free to enjoy

  815. such wonderful

  816. and life-giving

  817. love

  818. with Him.

  819. That's

  820. what you're

  821. free for.

  822. Let's pray.

  823. Jesus,

  824. praise you

  825. for making

  826. us free

  827. indeed

  828. and would

  829. you protect

  830. us

  831. from giving

  832. back into

  833. a yoke

  834. of slavery

  835. in order to

  836. feel good

  837. about ourselves

  838. or impress

  839. you or

  840. make others

  841. think we're

  842. something.

  843. Forgive us

  844. for that.

  845. Forgive us

  846. for failing

  847. to use

  848. your freedom

  849. to love

  850. the way

  851. you've loved

  852. us.

  853. Would you

  854. set our

  855. hearts free,

  856. our minds

  857. dreaming,

  858. our lives

  859. as an

  860. offering

  861. to you.

  862. Show us

  863. what it will

  864. look like

  865. for each

  866. of us.

  867. Give us

  868. joy

  869. in your

  870. freedom.

  871. freedom.

  872. It's true

  873. freedom

  874. you promise

  875. us.

  876. May we

  877. know it

  878. more fully

  879. even today.

  880. Take our

  881. lives,

  882. Lord.

  883. They are

  884. yours and

  885. we wouldn't

  886. want to

  887. live them

  888. for or

  889. with anyone

  890. else.

  891. We ask

  892. that in

  893. your name.

  894. Amen.

  895. Amen.

  896. Amen.
