  1. You are listening to a message from Southwood Presbyterian Church in Huntsville, Alabama.

  2. ! Our passion is to experience and express grace. Join us.

  3. Today is the last sermon in our summer series on tough questions.

  4. These are hard topics and I, for one, will be relieved to get back to preaching through a book of the Bible as usual.

  5. Even if that means revelation here shortly.

  6. But in all sincerity, this study has been really helpful for my faith.

  7. I pray that the same is true for you.

  8. And I pray that in addition to your own faith being strengthened, that you'll be encouraged to listen to,

  9. to engage with friends and neighbors because these questions we're talking about really are fundamental to life.

  10. A foundational to eternity.

  11. We've talked about suffering and science and the Bible and hell.

  12. But today we close with a question that a lot of people ask.

  13. Is Jesus really the only way to God?

  14. And I want us to turn to Acts chapter 17 together.

    Acts 17 chapter mention

  15. There are passages that answer this question more simply and directly.

  16. But I really love this passage where Paul is in Athens and he's engaging with the philosophers of the day about such significant and eternal issues.

  17. I'd encourage you, if you're not personally wondering about the question for today, think of someone who is.

  18. Put yourself in their shoes.

  19. Think of someone you know, perhaps.

  20. Let's read God's word in Acts 17 at verse 22.

  21. With Paul standing in the center of the city's social discussion, underneath the shadow of the Parthenon and speaking to the crowds gathered there about Jesus.

  22. So Paul, standing in the midst of the Areopagus, said,

  23. Men of Athens, I perceive that in every way you are very religious.

  24. For as I passed along and observed the objects of your worship, I found also an altar with this inscription,

  25. To the unknown God.

  26. What therefore you worship as unknown, this I proclaim to you.

  27. The God who made the world and everything in it, being Lord of heaven and earth, does not live in temples made by man,

  28. Nor is he served by human hands as though he needed anything,

  29. Since he himself gives to all mankind life and breath and everything.

  30. And he made from one man every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth,

  31. Having determined allotted periods and the boundaries of their dwelling place,

  32. That they should seek God in the hope that they might feel their way toward him and find him.

  33. Yet he is actually not far from each one of us.

  34. For in him we live and move and have our being, as even some of your own poets have said,

  35. For we are indeed his offspring.

  36. Being then God's offspring, we ought not to think that the divine being is like gold or silver or stone,

  37. An image formed by the art and imagination of man.

  38. The times of ignorance God overlooked, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent,

  39. Because he has fixed a day on which he will judge the world in righteousness by a man whom he has appointed,

  40. And of this he has given assurance to all by raising him from the dead.

  41. Now when they heard of the resurrection of the dead, some mocked.

  42. But others said, We will hear you again about this.

  43. So Paul went out from their midst, but some men joined him and believed,

  44. Among them Dionysius the Areopagite, and a woman named Damaris, and others with them.

  45. This is God's word, let's ask for his help.

  46. Father, what an incredible day when Paul spoke,

  47. Would you do that now?

  48. Would that be true again as we speak of this same Jesus with our friends and our neighbors and those we love?

  49. That your same spirit would be at work?

  50. Give us that hope in the resurrected, living, powerful Savior.

  51. We ask you in his name.

  52. Amen.

  53. The nuns are on the rise in our culture, surveys tell us.

  54. The nuns are not an order of Catholic women,

  55. but rather those who describe themselves as having no religion at all.

  56. Some of you in this room think of yourself that way.

  57. One of the interesting things is less than 20% of the nuns in America say that they are atheists.

  58. In other words, the large majority of them are open to the idea of God.

  59. They're asking some honest questions about what God would be like.

  60. Questions like the ones we've asked this summer.

  61. And one of the benefits of asking such questions, if you're one who's prone to doing that,

  62. one of the benefits of having an open mind is that many people are there interested in answers.

  63. As G.K. Chesterton once quipped,

  64. an open mind is like an open mouth.

  65. The purpose of its being open is to close it on something substantial.

  66. What I mean is, in different words,

  67. we're all actually worshiping something, all of us.

  68. Whether or not we would use that word worship.

  69. Most of us are looking for some centering principle for our lives,

  70. something that helps us understand our place,

  71. our significance in the world,

  72. that gives us meaning and purpose each day.

  73. Even if some wouldn't call it God,

  74. we're looking for something bigger than ourselves to be a part of.

  75. If you don't believe me, go to a college football stadium on a Saturday this fall.

  76. It may be freedom that we're looking to,

  77. being true to myself, right?

  78. It may be success, professional advancement,

  79. or money will make me somebody.

  80. Or it may be pleasure.

  81. Maybe happiness will satisfy me deep inside.

  82. But we're all looking for something that we can live for.

  83. And this is where Paul makes his connection with the intellectual elite in Athens.

  84. Athens long, the philosophical center of the world.

  85. Paul's going to answer yes to our question,

  86. is Jesus really the only way to God?

  87. But he wants to connect with his hearers first.

  88. He wants to help them understand Jesus as answer to questions they ask.

  89. That they too ask questions to which Jesus is the answer.

  90. That's what happens here in this interaction.

  91. Paul sees this altar, right?

  92. To an unknown God.

  93. God, you've got questions, he says.

  94. Amidst this Greek pantheon of gods and idols,

  95. they had plenty of them.

  96. There's one for crops, right?

  97. There's one for your family.

  98. There's one for love.

  99. There's one more here.

  100. To an unknown God, you know, to cover their bases

  101. because they weren't sure that they had life figured out.

  102. That they'd covered everything.

  103. There was no one God that could handle all of it.

  104. But Paul doesn't leave them just with open minds, right?

  105. Searching for answers, not caring where they find them.

  106. No, Paul has more in his heart for them.

  107. He says, you worship.

  108. You worship.

  109. What you worship as unknown,

  110. this I proclaim to you.

  111. For our purposes, Paul says three things.

  112. First, there is a God who made all this world, including us.

  113. That's where he starts, right?

  114. Paul says, there's a God,

  115. not one tribal deity among many,

  116. but the one supreme over all.

  117. He does not depend on people to serve him like your gods do.

  118. But he makes the world and all people.

  119. On top of that,

  120. this God is involved in the world.

  121. Now, here's where it starts to get a little bit different

  122. from what they would have expected.

  123. Some of them would have expected there was a God.

  124. But this God, he says, is involved in the world.

  125. Where people live and when they move

  126. and every other piece of society,

  127. this God is involved.

  128. And that's new information.

  129. But see, they loved new ideas.

  130. That's what they gathered to talk about.

  131. It would be new to them

  132. because their leading philosophies,

  133. Stoicism and Epicureanism,

  134. are mentioned in verse 18.

  135. They were both functionally naturalistic,

  136. like many in our culture today.

  137. In other words,

  138. if there was a God outside this world,

  139. and maybe they weren't sure,

  140. but if there was,

  141. he didn't get involved here.

  142. So you were stuck dealing with yourself,

  143. your desires,

  144. your emotions,

  145. either way.

  146. Paul says this true God

  147. is different from that.

  148. He's inside and involved.

  149. In fact,

  150. there's a reason, Paul says,

  151. this true God

  152. is so intimately involved

  153. in this world.

  154. This God is personal,

  155. and he wants a relationship

  156. with us.

  157. Track there in verse 26,

  158. why did he make them

  159. and put them

  160. in this time,

  161. in this place,

  162. verse 27,

  163. that they might seek God

  164. and find him

  165. since he's actually close to us.

  166. So he says,

  167. listen, listen,

  168. don't think that this true God

  169. is made of stone by men.

  170. Don't think, friend,

  171. that life's centering principle

  172. is something that we invent,

  173. that we could come up with,

  174. that we could concoct.

  175. No,

  176. he made us

  177. and is personal.

  178. And that speaks to his reality.

  179. This is important to follow.

  180. See,

  181. if God is just some man-made God of gold,

  182. then you can pretend

  183. whatever you'd like

  184. about who it is

  185. and what he does.

  186. You could pretend

  187. that he'll hear you

  188. if you dance longer

  189. or reward you

  190. if you say the magic words

  191. or that he'll satisfy you

  192. if you mix in other pursuits

  193. and you learn some calming postures.

  194. Whatever.

  195. You get to make it up

  196. if you made the God.

  197. But if God is personal,

  198. then like you or me,

  199. you have to know him

  200. for who he really is.

  201. That's what it means

  202. to be a person.

  203. Paul says,

  204. truth is a person,

  205. someone you know

  206. in relationship.

  207. So,

  208. you should not say,

  209. well,

  210. you know,

  211. I like to think of God

  212. as a vengeful warrior

  213. or a heavenly Santa Claus

  214. or a cosmic cheerleader

  215. who supports whatever I want to do.

  216. No, no, no, no.

  217. Even if you really like the idea

  218. of God being like one of those things,

  219. it doesn't make him that.

  220. He's a person.

  221. You can think of Will Spink

  222. as a gifted auto mechanic

  223. who hates people

  224. and loves cooked spinach.

  225. You can,

  226. but you'd be wrong

  227. on all counts.

  228. In fact,

  229. if you really,

  230. sincerely believe those things,

  231. you are really,

  232. sincerely wrong.

  233. See,

  234. truth,

  235. God says,

  236. is a person

  237. you can know

  238. in relationship.

  239. Truth,

  240. then,

  241. is based

  242. not on sincerity

  243. but on reality.

  244. Because God

  245. can actually be known

  246. because he wants

  247. relationship with us,

  248. because he's a personal being,

  249. you can be sincere

  250. in your thoughts about him

  251. and be sincerely wrong.

  252. Right?

  253. That's what Paul's saying.

  254. And by the way,

  255. any other kind of God,

  256. a distant one,

  257. an impersonal one,

  258. you got nothing to do with,

  259. right?

  260. And nothing to worry about

  261. from anyway,

  262. so don't bother

  263. with that option.

  264. One side note

  265. before we move on

  266. to Paul's punchline.

  267. I hope that you,

  268. just if you grabbed this verse

  269. and thought,

  270. man,

  271. this isn't even really

  272. what Paul's building to,

  273. but I hope you can stop here

  274. and remember

  275. how much God wants to be

  276. in relationship with you.

  277. Can you see that there

  278. in verse 27?

  279. Why he's doing

  280. all of these things

  281. in history?

  282. When we talk about

  283. our faith priority,

  284. the importance of owning

  285. our relationship with God,

  286. we don't mean

  287. that it's up to us

  288. to figure it out

  289. and make our way

  290. up the mountain

  291. to God

  292. to finally get

  293. to where he is.

  294. No,

  295. he has made us

  296. and he has placed us

  297. when we are

  298. and where we are

  299. that we might know him.

  300. He made you

  301. and placed you

  302. in Huntsville,

  303. in the 21st century,

  304. in your school,

  305. in your friendships,

  306. in your neighborhood,

  307. today at Southwood Church.

  308. Why?

  309. Why are you here?

  310. That you might know him

  311. because he wants

  312. to know you

  313. and he wants you

  314. to know him.

  315. I hope that encourages you.

  316. I hope that warms

  317. your heart to him

  318. to making a priority

  319. out of that relationship

  320. as he makes

  321. a priority out of it.

  322. If that doesn't do it,

  323. how about the fact

  324. that he came after you

  325. for that relationship?

  326. God became man

  327. to fix our broken relationship.

  328. This is where I want us

  329. to slow down.

  330. It's Paul's climactic point.

  331. Jesus' resurrection

  332. demonstrates

  333. that he uniquely

  334. is the key

  335. to this relationship.

  336. It's what DJ

  337. was just singing about, right?

  338. It's a living hope.

  339. See verse 30,

  340. God commands all people

  341. everywhere to repent,

  342. to turn back to him

  343. as the true God,

  344. not just one among many,

  345. not just take your pick

  346. today or this week,

  347. to turn back to him

  348. as the true God

  349. because,

  350. verse 31,

  351. God has fixed a day

  352. on which he will judge

  353. the world in righteousness

  354. by a man

  355. whom he has appointed.

  356. And of this,

  357. he has given assurance

  358. to all

  359. by raising him

  360. from the dead.

  361. boom.

  362. Paul has moved

  363. immediately

  364. and starkly

  365. from philosophical

  366. to practical,

  367. from theoretical

  368. to tangible,

  369. from hypothetical

  370. to historical,

  371. right?

  372. Why is Jesus

  373. the only way to God,

  374. Paul says?

  375. Why,

  376. if God so wants

  377. to have this relationship

  378. with us,

  379. are there not just

  380. a million ways

  381. and you can get to him

  382. any way you please?

  383. Because God

  384. is a person

  385. and no other person

  386. has ever risen

  387. from the dead

  388. like this

  389. but God has

  390. in the person

  391. of Jesus.

  392. So to finish

  393. Paul's argument,

  394. that got interrupted

  395. there in Athens,

  396. the unknown God

  397. is unknown

  398. no longer

  399. but has made

  400. himself known

  401. in Jesus,

  402. crucified

  403. and risen

  404. from the dead.

  405. He's how you know

  406. God.

  407. Yahweh,

  408. his personal name,

  409. has sent

  410. his son

  411. and he's the way

  412. that you know

  413. God.

  414. See,

  415. the point

  416. Paul is making

  417. is there's a lot

  418. of philosophical

  419. things you can talk

  420. about

  421. but in

  422. an objective

  423. human history,

  424. Jesus

  425. either rose

  426. from the dead

  427. or he didn't.

  428. Right?

  429. It's not like,

  430. well,

  431. kind of

  432. and maybe

  433. he either rose

  434. from the dead

  435. or he didn't.

  436. It is a debated,

  437. admittedly,

  438. historical fact

  439. that makes

  440. a significant

  441. statement

  442. about who

  443. God is

  444. and this

  445. is why

  446. saying

  447. that all

  448. roads

  449. lead to

  450. God

  451. while

  452. perhaps

  453. well intended

  454. by some

  455. actually does

  456. not respect

  457. any religion

  458. except

  459. the one

  460. belief system

  461. that embraces

  462. that particular

  463. theory.

  464. That's not

  465. the teaching

  466. of Buddha.

  467. That's not

  468. the teaching

  469. of Muhammad.

  470. That's not

  471. the teaching

  472. of Confucius.

  473. That's not

  474. the teaching

  475. of Jesus.

  476. They all

  477. present

  478. unique ways

  479. to experience

  480. the divine.

  481. And by the

  482. way,

  483. only one

  484. of those

  485. founders

  486. claims to

  487. have died

  488. and then

  489. risen from

  490. the dead.

  491. You can

  492. visit

  493. Muhammad's

  494. grave site

  495. today.

  496. The resurrection

  497. of Jesus

  498. is where

  499. all these

  500. roads

  501. diverge,

  502. isn't it?

  503. See,

  504. Muslims

  505. talk a whole

  506. lot about

  507. Jesus,

  508. but they

  509. don't believe

  510. that he

  511. died.

  512. Jews

  513. talk a lot

  514. about Jesus,

  515. but they

  516. don't believe

  517. that he

  518. rose from

  519. the dead.

  520. Christians

  521. understand

  522. that both

  523. the death

  524. of Jesus

  525. and the

  526. resurrection

  527. of Jesus

  528. are essential

  529. for our

  530. salvation,

  531. for our

  532. relationship

  533. with God

  534. to be

  535. restored.

  536. the life

  537. giver

  538. must pay

  539. our

  540. penalty

  541. and then

  542. conquer

  543. death

  544. once

  545. and for

  546. all.

  547. And what

  548. does he

  549. do?

  550. Jesus

  551. appears

  552. to hundreds,

  553. starting with

  554. women who

  555. wouldn't have

  556. been legal

  557. witnesses.

  558. He appears

  559. to hundreds

  560. and hundreds

  561. on different

  562. occasions.

  563. In fact,

  564. many of his

  565. followers who

  566. see him

  567. then end up

  568. giving their

  569. lives to

  570. defend the

  571. truth of the

  572. resurrection

  573. that they

  574. saw with

  575. their own

  576. eyes.

  577. None of the

  578. religious

  579. authorities,

  580. none of the

  581. Roman authorities

  582. who desperately

  583. wanted to

  584. stamp out

  585. this movement

  586. could produce

  587. his body

  588. days or even

  589. months after

  590. his public

  591. crucifixion.

  592. If you think

  593. of the

  594. resurrection as

  595. something that

  596. Jesus'

  597. followers made

  598. up to pretend

  599. that he was

  600. God,

  601. and he really

  602. didn't think

  603. that,

  604. now just

  605. remember all

  606. the things

  607. Jesus himself

  608. said and

  609. did to

  610. demonstrate

  611. his self

  612. understanding

  613. that he

  614. was the

  615. divine

  616. son of

  617. God.

  618. What does

  619. Jesus do?

  620. Jesus forgives

  621. sins.

  622. Jesus accepts

  623. worship.

  624. Jesus commands

  625. creation.

  626. Jesus speaks

  627. of the unity

  628. that he has

  629. with his

  630. father,

  631. and then he

  632. says in

  633. John 14,

  634. I am the

  635. way,

  636. the truth,

  637. and the

  638. life.

  639. No one

  640. comes to

  641. the father

  642. except through

  643. me.

  644. undeniably

  645. an exclusive

  646. claim.

  647. Right or

  648. wrong,

  649. an exclusive

  650. claim.

  651. One echoed by

  652. the apostle

  653. Peter in

  654. Acts 4 as

  655. he says of

  656. Jesus,

  657. salvation is

  658. found in no

  659. one else,

  660. for there is

  661. no other name

  662. under heaven

  663. given to

  664. men by

  665. which we

  666. must be

  667. saved.

  668. He said

  669. the Bible's

  670. answer,

  671. answer,

  672. Jesus'

  673. answer,

  674. the apostles'

  675. answer to

  676. the question of

  677. how to live a

  678. meaningful life.

  679. How do people

  680. separate it from

  681. the God who

  682. created them

  683. in his image

  684. to have a

  685. purpose for

  686. which he made

  687. them?

  688. How do they get

  689. back into

  690. relationship to

  691. have that image

  692. restored completely

  693. from cover to

  694. cover?

  695. the answer to

  696. that question

  697. is Jesus.

  698. Right?

  699. The death of

  700. the sacrificial

  701. lamb.

  702. The life of

  703. the resurrected

  704. king.

  705. Jesus is the

  706. way you find

  707. the purpose and

  708. significance that

  709. you feel deep

  710. inside but you

  711. can't live up to,

  712. that you struggle

  713. to explain in

  714. the real world.

  715. Jesus is the

  716. way to God.

  717. God.

  718. Now that can be

  719. good news.

  720. That you today

  721. can respond to

  722. that with joy

  723. and embrace

  724. and believe in

  725. him but I

  726. understand that

  727. often statements

  728. like that Jesus

  729. is the only way

  730. to God are more

  731. of a shock to

  732. our system.

  733. Especially with

  734. our modern

  735. sensibilities.

  736. People often ask

  737. our question

  738. this morning

  739. because the

  740. exclusive claims

  741. of Jesus

  742. sound to

  743. them narrow

  744. minded

  745. or intolerant

  746. or arrogant.

  747. You may have

  748. heard those

  749. words in that

  750. context.

  751. It's important

  752. to say that

  753. sometimes the

  754. way we hold

  755. these truths

  756. is arrogant.

  757. Right?

  758. Shame on us.

  759. Father forgive

  760. us for

  761. ever being

  762. like that.

  763. Actually

  764. properly

  765. understood

  766. the claims

  767. of Jesus

  768. should make

  769. us not

  770. arrogant but

  771. humble.

  772. Eager to

  773. see others

  774. as better

  775. than ourselves.

  776. Empowered

  777. to love

  778. sacrificially

  779. since that's

  780. what the

  781. Savior at the

  782. center of

  783. Christianity

  784. is and

  785. does.

  786. Those are

  787. resources that

  788. no other

  789. religion has.

  790. We ought to

  791. live like that.

  792. But if the

  793. claims of

  794. Jesus are

  795. true,

  796. demonstrated by

  797. his rising

  798. from the

  799. dead so

  800. that we

  801. can trust

  802. everything else

  803. he says,

  804. then sharing

  805. them in

  806. love is

  807. not arrogant

  808. or intolerant.

  809. I've told you

  810. before of this

  811. evening that I

  812. was on some

  813. nearby trails

  814. and starting

  815. to get really

  816. confused about

  817. where I was.

  818. I was turned

  819. around,

  820. I walked in

  821. circles,

  822. it was starting

  823. to get dark,

  824. I decided to

  825. run some but

  826. I didn't know

  827. if I was

  828. running in the

  829. right direction,

  830. I walked

  831. back a little

  832. bit,

  833. tried different

  834. trails.

  835. I was urgently

  836. needing to

  837. get back to

  838. the safety of

  839. my car.

  840. When I walked

  841. past an old

  842. sign that

  843. said parking

  844. lot this

  845. way and it

  846. pointed to a

  847. trail.

  848. Now that

  849. trail was not

  850. one that

  851. looked very

  852. bright,

  853. it was getting

  854. quite dark

  855. and looking

  856. down the

  857. trail I

  858. could not

  859. see the

  860. parking lot.

  861. There were

  862. actually a

  863. couple other

  864. trails nearby

  865. that looked a

  866. little bit

  867. brighter but I

  868. followed the

  869. trail within a

  870. few minutes,

  871. made it back to

  872. the safety and

  873. rest of my

  874. car.

  875. Now listen,

  876. that sign was

  877. not arrogant

  878. because it

  879. told me the

  880. one trail that

  881. led to my

  882. car, right?

  883. And it would

  884. not have been

  885. loving to

  886. label all of

  887. the trails with

  888. the same sign

  889. when some of

  890. them were

  891. actually loops

  892. that I could

  893. have walked

  894. around all

  895. night and

  896. never found

  897. my car.

  898. The only way

  899. that the trail,

  900. the way,

  901. doesn't matter

  902. matter is if

  903. the destination

  904. doesn't matter,

  905. right?

  906. But if there

  907. is a personal

  908. God, if there

  909. is a true

  910. source of

  911. safety and

  912. rest, then we

  913. follow the sign

  914. to Him and we

  915. know we can

  916. trust Him.

  917. Think about it

  918. this way, I

  919. hardly hesitated

  920. when I saw

  921. that sign.

  922. I was looking

  923. for a sign to

  924. follow, right?

  925. But to be

  926. honest, it was

  927. kind of an old

  928. sign and I

  929. do know some

  930. kids who have

  931. sometimes in

  932. their boredom or

  933. mischievousness

  934. decided to mess

  935. with a sign and

  936. point it down a

  937. wrong trail.

  938. Maybe they were

  939. messing with me.

  940. I couldn't be

  941. sure that that

  942. trail would get

  943. me to my car just

  944. because the sign

  945. was there.

  946. But what if there

  947. was a person

  948. standing there

  949. instead of an

  950. old sign?

  951. What if there

  952. was a person

  953. saying, I've

  954. just come from

  955. the parking lot

  956. and I've got a

  957. headlamp that's

  958. really bright.

  959. Jump on my

  960. back, in fact, I

  961. will carry you

  962. there to the

  963. parking lot.

  964. Wouldn't that be

  965. even better?

  966. Jesus is the

  967. person who came

  968. as the way to

  969. safety and

  970. security and

  971. joy and hope

  972. and life with

  973. your heavenly

  974. Father that you

  975. may never have

  976. personally met.

  977. Jesus says, I

  978. am the light of

  979. the world.

  980. Whoever follows

  981. me will never

  982. walk in darkness

  983. but will have the

  984. light of life.

  985. He is the way,

  986. the truth, and

  987. the life.

  988. He's the door of

  989. the sheep because

  990. he is the

  991. resurrection and

  992. the life.

  993. We need no other

  994. way.

  995. Jesus saves.

  996. That's our hope.

  997. God.

  998. One other concern

  999. that causes some

  1000. people to ask this

  1001. question is their

  1002. genuine care for

  1003. those who have

  1004. never heard the

  1005. good news of

  1006. Jesus.

  1007. I love the heart

  1008. of that concern.

  1009. A couple of things

  1010. I want to say

  1011. briefly.

  1012. First, the Bible

  1013. says that creation

  1014. itself testifies

  1015. to God.

  1016. It's a way,

  1017. all of creation

  1018. is, that God

  1019. generally reveals

  1020. himself and his

  1021. character to all

  1022. people.

  1023. So there's always a

  1024. sign pointing to

  1025. God near everyone

  1026. who has ever lived

  1027. and who knows all

  1028. of the ways that

  1029. God might use this

  1030. sign to point them

  1031. to Jesus.

  1032. I don't know.

  1033. But we do know

  1034. the most common

  1035. way that God does

  1036. that and that's

  1037. that God sends

  1038. you and me to

  1039. them.

  1040. That's the message

  1041. of Paul in Romans

  1042. 10.

  1043. How will they

  1044. believe in him

  1045. of whom they

  1046. have not heard

  1047. and how will they

  1048. hear without

  1049. someone preaching?

  1050. If that's a

  1051. burden on your

  1052. heart, how is

  1053. God sending you

1054. to be a part of

  1055. that mission?

  1056. Sharing the good

  1057. news, translating

  1058. his word, equipping

  1059. others to share

  1060. the good news with

  1061. people you'll never

  1062. reach?

  1063. Who are you going

  1064. to meet this week

  1065. that you can share

  1066. with?

  1067. So there's

  1068. creation.

  1069. There's God's

  1070. people as

  1071. ambassadors of

  1072. Jesus.

  1073. And my single

  1074. greatest hope by

  1075. far is God

  1076. himself.

  1077. God's grace that

  1078. is bigger than

  1079. any of us can

  1080. grasp.

  1081. Let's contemplate

  1082. this glorious truth

  1083. as we come to

  1084. this table.

  1085. It's what I call

  1086. inclusive

  1087. exclusivity.

  1088. people complain

  1089. about the

  1090. exclusivity of

  1091. Christianity,

  1092. claiming to be the

  1093. only way to God.

  1094. But listen, many

  1095. religions and

  1096. approaches to life

  1097. require a lot of

  1098. proper performance

  1099. from you to

  1100. approach God, to

  1101. get anywhere near

  1102. him, to have any

  1103. opportunity to be

  1104. pleasing to him.

  1105. There's often a

  1106. long list.

  1107. Some require, in

  1108. fact, multiple

  1109. lifetimes of good

  1110. deeds.

  1111. Try that.

  1112. others offer

  1113. preference based

  1114. on race,

  1115. finances,

  1116. or physical

  1117. sacrifice, even

  1118. harming yourself

  1119. or others.

  1120. Still others

  1121. insist on inner

  1122. peace from long

  1123. practice of getting

  1124. there just right.

  1125. that.

  1126. Listen, only Jesus

  1127. says, God so

  1128. loved the world

  1129. that he didn't

  1130. send a long list

  1131. of things to do

  1132. to get near to

  1133. him, but in fact

  1134. he gave his

  1135. only son, the

  1136. exclusive only

  1137. son, that

  1138. whoever believes

  1139. in him will not

  1140. perish but have

  1141. everlasting life.

  1142. whoever just does

  1143. what?

  1144. Believes.

  1145. Whoever follows

  1146. the light of the

  1147. world will never

  1148. walk in darkness.

  1149. If you are hearing

  1150. my voice right now,

  1151. you are invited

  1152. in, not excluded

  1153. from, the family

  1154. of God, the hope

  1155. of Jesus, the

  1156. Savior who's big

  1157. enough for you.

  1158. God is so gracious,

  1159. y'all, that his

  1160. family is made up

  1161. of people from

  1162. every tribe and

  1163. tongue and language

  1164. and nation, Jew

  1165. and Gentile, rich

  1166. and poor, tight

  1167. laced rule follower

  1168. types and go with

  1169. the flow, partiers

  1170. are all in his

  1171. family.

  1172. I mean, just

  1173. think it's amazing

  1174. to consider the

  1175. different ways people

  1176. encounter Jesus and

  1177. the different lengths

  1178. of time they

  1179. actually spend

  1180. following him.

  1181. The way to God.

  1182. Right?

  1183. Isn't it the same

  1184. for everybody?

  1185. Don't we all have

  1186. the same experience?

  1187. We do not.

  1188. Some never remember

  1189. a day they didn't

  1190. trust Jesus.

  1191. Baptized before they

  1192. can remember but

  1193. prayed to trust Jesus

  1194. in the church,

  1195. nursery or VBS or

  1196. their home at three

  1197. years old.

  1198. Others met Jesus

  1199. on a retreat as a

  1200. teenager.

  1201. Others spent years

  1202. sowing their wild

  1203. oats before a friend

  1204. told them about a

  1205. Savior who would

  1206. forgive all those

  1207. sins and show them

  1208. the path of true

  1209. life.

  1210. Still others

  1211. wrestled painfully

  1212. through intellectual

  1213. questions and

  1214. discussed things

  1215. with friends and

  1216. others and then

  1217. Jesus met them as

  1218. an adult over

  1219. coffee and they

  1220. surrendered.

  1221. Increasingly these

  1222. days I hear stories

1223. of a man in white

  1224. who appeared in a

  1225. vision to introduce

  1226. himself to people

  1227. before they knew

  1228. his name.

  1229. And yet others are

  1230. like the thief on

  1231. the cross who

  1232. doesn't follow Jesus

1233. a single day in his

  1234. life here but

  1235. spends eternity with

  1236. Jesus in paradise.

  1237. Not because he knew

  1238. enough, not because he

  1239. did enough, but

  1240. because God's grace

  1241. saves people that you

  1242. know didn't deserve

  1243. it and never thought

  1244. would encounter Jesus

  1245. personally at all.

  1246. That's what God's

1247. grace is like so you

  1248. keep praying, you

  1249. keep sharing, you

  1250. keep praying.

  1251. What greater hope

  1252. could there be than

  1253. a God whose gracious

  1254. character brought him

  1255. from the comforts of

1256. heaven to the pain of

1257. a cross and the shame

1258. of a tomb for us?

1259. Yes, Jesus is the only

1260. way to God but anyone,

1261. yes him, yes her, yes

1262. you can come to God

  1263. through Jesus.

  1264. Jesus, praise the Lord.

1265. This may be your first

1266. day in church and you

1267. may think you are the

  1268. worst person in here.

  1269. You're not.

1270. But Jesus is alive for

  1271. you regardless.

1272. You may think you have

  1273. nothing to do with

  1274. religion, with lists of

  1275. rules, it's just anathema

  1276. to you, with hypocritical

  1277. people like you're

  1278. surrounded by right now.

  1279. Well then listen, come

1280. not to us, come to

  1281. Jesus who brings you

  1282. straight into a

  1283. relationship with God

  1284. because he's the way,

1285. the truth, and the life

  1286. risen from the dead.

  1287. You have options.

1288. You can mock like some

1289. did that day to Paul.

1290. You can ask to talk more.

  1291. We would love that

  1292. opportunity.

1293. We'll even do it after

  1294. the service.

  1295. You also have the

1296. option to join the man

  1297. Dionysius on the

  1298. philosopher's council or

  1299. the woman Damaris.

  1300. Among others, you can

1301. hear the good news of

  1302. Jesus and believe and

1303. find life in him today.

1304. I want you to hear the

  1305. invitation straight from

  1306. the lips of Jesus.

1307. Come to me, all who

  1308. labor and are heavy

1309. laden, and I will give

  1310. you rest.

1311. I am the way and the

  1312. truth and the life.

1313. No one comes to the

  1314. Father except through me.

1315. And whoever comes to me,

1316. I will never drive away.

  1317. Jesus sat with his

  1318. disciples the night he

  1319. was betrayed and he

1320. took bread and he broke

1321. it and he gave it to

1322. them as I am ministering

  1323. in his name.

1324. Give this bread to you.

1325. He said, take and eat.

1326. This is my body given

  1327. for you.

1328. Do this in remembrance of

  1329. me.

  1330. Then after supper, he

  1331. took the cup saying,

1332. this cup is the new

  1333. covenant in my blood.

1334. My blood shed for many.

  1335. For the forgiveness of

1336. sins, drink from it, all

  1337. of you.

  1338. Do this.

  1339. Eat this.

1340. Drink this as long as

  1341. you're remembering Jesus

  1342. as you do.

1343. If your hope is not in

  1344. Jesus, don't come and

  1345. perform a religious ritual

1346. that your heart is not

  1347. in.

  1348. We're warned against

  1349. acting like that.

  1350. Instead, would you

  1351. consider the offer of

1352. Jesus to bring you to

1353. God, to be the person

1354. at the center of your

  1355. life that gives you

  1356. hope and peace and

1357. purpose that you so long

  1358. for?

  1359. Jesus is offering you

  1360. that today.

1361. And for those of you who

1362. have found him to be just

  1363. that, even though you

  1364. struggle, even though you

  1365. may have wandered after

  1366. idols, but you're coming

1367. back right now to the one

1368. in whom you found life.

  1369. You've been baptized in

  1370. his name.

1371. You're part of his family

  1372. at any church that

1373. preaches the good news of

  1374. salvation by grace alone,

  1375. through faith alone, in

  1376. Christ alone.

1377. Come and eat then with the

1378. one who comes first to set

1379. the table and to eat with

  1380. you.

  1381. Let's pray and we'll do that

  1382. together.

  1383. Father, Jesus, we're so

1384. grateful for you, for your

  1385. salvation, for the hope

1386. that we have because you

1387. died instead of us and you

1388. live so that we will live

  1389. with you.

1390. Would you use very normal

1391. bread and wine to remind our

1392. hearts afresh that we have

  1393. life in you?

1394. We ask it in your name.

  1395. Amen.
