  1. You are listening to a message from Southwood Presbyterian Church in Huntsville, Alabama.

  2. ! Our passion is to experience and express grace. Join us. Amen. Thank you, Danita.

  3. ! I want you to stay right there in that place where your heart's at while you're listening

  4. to that song for a minute.

  5. The way you're feeling as you think about God watching the sparrow and watching you, what

  6. I want you to know this morning is that you can live with God like that and be constantly

  7. experiencing peace and appreciating the beauty and wonder of God in every moment, serving

  8. the people God puts in your life rather than serving yourself. You can. You can live right

  9. there. In fact, Jesus wants you there, constantly experiencing peace, appreciating God's beauty

  10. and wonder and serving other people. In fact, you can live like that calm place and taking everything in and

  11. slowly moving through life and living sacrificially and you can still have a joyful, fulfilling,

  12. successful year. Would you sign up for that? Would you sign up for that if you could have that sense of peace and that fulfilled of a life?

  13. My guess is you might have enjoyed it during the song. But when I tell you you can live like that all the time, it probably seems a bit far-fetched to most of us.

  14. As you consider your world, as you consider your own life. Probably a lot of reasons, a lot of things going on in your life that might make you wonder and think,

  15. yeah, well, that was nice for that song, but I'm going to leave here in a little bit and it's not going to feel like that anymore.

  16. Some of you probably, like me, have been enjoying the last few days of summer vacation.

  17. You don't really like me calling them the last few days

  18. of summer vacation. I've been in the mountains this week celebrating my parents'

  19. 50th anniversary. As I was driving home last night,

  20. I started to think,

  21. for the first time,

  22. I've got a kid who's not coming home with us.

  23. How do I stay in touch with her, love her, support her?

  24. Well, but school starts this week.

  25. There's new teachers to meet, supplies to purchase,

  26. emotions to manage.

  27. We still haven't fixed those sinks in our bathroom,

  28. says what I'm writing down as we're driving back.

  29. I've fallen behind on that work project during vacation, right?

  30. Better get ready for Revelation next week.

  31. What about that new grace group we're starting?

  32. Probably we should have the neighbors over first.

  33. We need to get them in our home sometime.

  34. But no way can all that happen in just seven days a week, right?

  35. Are we adding some?

  36. But we have kids.

  37. Some of our kids live at home.

  38. Grandkids, maybe you have activities.

  39. Swim, soccer, band.

  40. Maybe they need a sport, an academic group,

  41. an art, and a service project for their resume, right?

  42. Better be well-rounded by the time they finish high school.

  43. She's going to need a ride to all of those things.

  44. Oh, no, one of them still doesn't drive.

  45. Oh, honey, yes, also date night.

  46. Yeah, I'm sorry.

  47. That's important.

  48. Let's make that a priority.

  49. And let's see, October?

  50. Is that our next open night on the calendar?

  51. Put that on there for then.

  52. I don't know what your last few days have been like.

  53. That's where I was last night.

  54. Everybody has different things and different seasons.

  55. But I want to ask you this morning,

  56. have the things on your calendar

  57. or in your heart or on your list,

  58. have they been making your heart rate rise at all lately?

  59. Would you say you're more anxious or calm recently

  60. if you had to pick one?

  61. Do you ever get to a place where you wonder

  62. if you can really handle it all?

  63. Or where to start if you were going to try?

  64. Where would you start?

  65. I thought before we jump into Revelation next Sunday,

  66. not just to delay a week for my own sake,

  67. although partially,

  68. before we jump into a busy fall,

  69. school year, ministry year,

  70. I want us to listen to the words of Jesus

  71. as He orients our hearts, our lives.

  72. Turn with me to Matthew 6 this morning.

  73. I'm going to read some words of Jesus

  74. where He's speaking in the middle of the Sermon on the Mount.

  75. He sat down with people gathered around Him

  76. to tell them and us how to live

  77. with God's values and priorities.

  78. Here, in these verses,

  79. He tells us where to start, right?

  80. What's first?

  81. I want to ask you to listen really carefully

  82. to the words that I'm about to read.

  83. They are the most important of the whole sermon.

  84. See, this is God's Word.

  85. It is, in a rapidly changing world,

  86. something eternally unchanging.

  87. In a world of disappointing people and promises,

  88. something you can completely count on.

  89. In a world of confusion and chaos,

  90. it's something that is absolutely true.

  91. Matthew 6 and verse 25,

  92. Jesus says,

  93. Therefore, I tell you,

  94. do not be anxious about your life,

  95. what you will eat or what you will drink,

  96. nor about your body,

  97. what you will put on.

  98. Is not life more than food

  99. and the body more than clothing?

  100. Look at the birds of the air.

  101. They neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns,

  102. and yet your heavenly Father feeds them.

  103. Are you not of more value than they?

  104. And which of you, by being anxious,

  105. can add a single hour to his span of life?

  106. And why are you anxious about clothing?

  107. Consider the lilies of the field,

  108. how they grow.

  109. They neither toil nor spin.

  110. Yet I tell you,

  111. even Solomon in all his glory

  112. was not arrayed like one of these.

  113. But if God so clothes the grass of the field,

  114. which today is alive

  115. and tomorrow is thrown into the oven,

  116. will he not much more clothe you,

  117. O you of little faith?

  118. Therefore, do not be anxious,

  119. saying,

  120. what shall we eat or what shall we drink

  121. or what shall we wear?

  122. For the Gentiles seek after all these things,

  123. and your heavenly Father

  124. knows that you need them all.

  125. But seek first the kingdom of God

  126. and his righteousness,

  127. and all these things will be added to you.

  128. Therefore, do not be anxious about tomorrow,

  129. for tomorrow will be anxious for itself,

  130. sufficient for the day

  131. is its own trouble.

  132. Let's pray.

  133. Father, thank you for your word.

  134. Jesus, you know what we need to hear.

  135. Father,

  136. and you've spoken clearly.

  137. Holy Spirit,

  138. you know how each of us this morning

  139. needs to have this truth applied

  140. to our hearts and lives,

  141. and so help us.

  142. Give us ears to hear.

  143. Give us hearts

  144. to respond

  145. joyfully,

  146. even.

  147. To have your priorities,

  148. to live with your values,

  149. to know and love you,

  150. Jesus.

  151. Help us with that,

  152. we ask even now,

  153. in your name.

  154. Amen.

  155. Amen.

  156. The main thing

  157. is to keep the main thing

  158. the main thing.

  159. Most of you

  160. have heard me say that before,

  161. often around this time of year.

  162. But I need to hear it.

  163. In the midst of an array

  164. of activities,

  165. of potential priorities,

  166. how do we know

  167. where to start?

  168. Well,

  169. Jesus tells us

  170. in this passage

  171. about the life

  172. that he's made us for,

  173. where we keep our eye

  174. on the ball,

  175. this is what he wants for us,

  176. where we don't miss

  177. the important things,

  178. the main thing.

  179. And so that's my heart

  180. for us this morning

  181. is to slow down.

  182. It's the beginning

  183. of a new year,

  184. so to speak.

  185. Whatever season

  186. you're in

  187. and walking into,

  188. slow down

  189. and see clearly.

  190. That seems simple.

  191. That would be neat

  192. and easy.

  193. Get our priorities

  194. in line quickly

  195. if it weren't

  196. for our universal problem.

  197. Jesus knows

  198. that we are all

  199. prone

  200. to anxious

  201. distraction.

  202. He has to tell us

  203. this over

  204. and over,

  205. right?

  206. Verse 25,

  207. don't be anxious.

  208. Verse 28,

  209. why are you anxious?

  210. Verse 31,

  211. don't be anxious.

  212. Verse 34,

  213. don't be anxious.

  214. You getting the idea?

  215. Your Bible

  216. may say

  217. don't worry

  218. or something

  219. similar to that.

  220. but the word

  221. that's being used

  222. there,

  223. it refers to being

  224. distracted

  225. or divided,

  226. right?

  227. Pulled in two

  228. directions.

  229. Like Martha

  230. in Luke 10,

  231. she was distracted

  232. with much

  233. serving.

  234. Many good

  235. things,

  236. so many

  237. important

  238. things to do

  239. when Mary

  240. is sitting

  241. where?

  242. At Jesus'

  243. feet.

  244. Maybe you feel

  245. multiple relationships,

  246. multiple screens

  247. that you're

  248. watching at one

  249. time,

  250. multiple problems,

  251. multiple

  252. distractions.

  253. I'm anxious.

  254. Some of us

  255. are distracted

  256. with the stressors

  257. of the present

  258. moment.

  259. Always,

  260. that's where we are.

  261. Others of us

  262. tend to spin

  263. up our anxiety

  264. worrying about

  265. future possibilities,

  266. how things

  267. might go,

  268. what might

  269. happen,

  270. how it could

  271. go wrong

  272. if we don't

  273. get things

  274. under control,

  275. right?

  276. But regardless

  277. of how that

  278. works in

  279. your heart,

  280. we're all

  281. easily

  282. distracted

  283. from the

  284. main thing.

  285. we may

  286. be anxious

  287. about food

  288. or clothing.

  289. Just

  290. based on

  291. what I

  292. know of

  293. sermons,

  294. someone has

  295. already started

  296. making a

  297. grocery list

  298. since I

  299. started a

  300. few minutes

  301. ago.

  302. That's

  303. the truth.

  304. Somebody

  305. else is

  306. worried about

  307. what to wear

  308. the first

  309. day of

  310. school.

  311. That's

  312. what you've

  313. been thinking

  314. about.

  315. Verse 25

  316. says,

  317. don't be

  318. anxious about

  319. that.

  320. The length

  321. of your

  322. life,

  323. verse 27,

  324. somebody's

  325. probably been

  326. wondering about

  327. your health

  328. already.

  329. Or what

  330. I'm doing

  331. tomorrow,

  332. verse 34,

  333. somebody's

  334. been planning

  335. your schedule

  336. for the

  337. week.

  338. I know,

  339. I've done

  340. that.

  341. What's

  342. next?

  343. Listen,

  344. we're doing

  345. all of those

  346. things just

  347. right now and

  348. God is

  349. speaking to

  350. you.

  351. And yet

  352. we're

  353. distracted.

  354. There's so

  355. much we feel

  356. like we have

  357. to worry

  358. about.

  359. And Jesus

  360. says that's

  361. a problem.

  362. Not that we

  363. care about

  364. those things,

  365. of course,

  366. but that we're

  367. relying on

  368. ourselves to

  369. take care of

  370. them to the

  371. point that they

  372. distract us from

  373. what is most

  374. important.

  375. see, there's

  376. a problem

  377. beneath the

  378. problem.

  379. When we

  380. realize we're

  381. anxiously

  382. distracted,

  383. it's not that

  384. you get bored

  385. by this

  386. preacher,

  387. that's not

  388. the problem.

  389. We can see

  390. the problem

  391. in verse 30.

  392. But if God

  393. so clothes the

  394. grass of the

  395. field which

  396. today is alive

  397. and tomorrow

  398. is thrown

  399. into the

  400. oven,

  401. will he not

  402. much more

  403. clothe you,

  404. O you of

  405. little faith?

  406. That Jesus

  407. is talking

  408. here to

  409. people who

  410. are expressing

  411. some faith

  412. in him.

  413. These are

  414. warnings for

  415. the people of

  416. God, for

  417. us, people

  418. who do have

  419. faith.

  420. But like

  421. Jesus'

  422. disciples, we

  423. often have

  424. little faith.

  425. We have

  426. perhaps believed

  427. in Jesus to

  428. save us from

  429. our sins one

  430. day, someday,

  431. but we are

  432. not believing

  433. Jesus for

  434. today.

  435. In other

  436. words, the

  437. problem beneath

  438. the problem

  439. is a neglected

  440. relationship

  441. with God.

  442. Isn't that at

  443. the root of

  444. our problems

  445. here?

  446. Let me tease

  447. it out for

  448. you.

  449. See, I'm

  450. anxiously

  451. distracted by

  452. obsessing over

  453. my health and

  454. my weight

  455. because I've

  456. not been

  457. nurturing a

  458. relationship with

  459. the great

  460. physician who

  461. made me

  462. fearfully and

  463. wonderfully and

  464. promises no

  465. hair falls from

  466. my head without

  467. his good care.

  468. I've decided I

  469. like controlling

  470. my life better.

  471. Or I'm anxiously

  472. distracted by

  473. obsessing over my

  474. kids and their

  475. current and future

  476. success in life

  477. life because I've

  478. not been talking

  479. about them to

  480. the God who

  481. promises to be a

  482. God to me and

  483. to my children

  484. after me and

  485. has been faithful

  486. generation after

  487. generation.

  488. I've decided I

  489. like controlling

  490. my kids' lives

  491. better.

  492. money.

  493. Or I'm

  494. anxiously distracted

  495. by obsessing over

  496. my bank account

  497. and my budget

  498. because I've not

  499. been remembering

  500. and thanking God

  501. who owns the

  502. cattle on a

  503. thousand hills for

  504. entrusting some of

  505. his resources to

  506. me to steward.

  507. Even though he

  508. promises to meet

  509. all my needs

  510. according to his

  511. glorious riches in

  512. Christ Jesus, I've

  513. decided I like

  514. controlling my

  515. financial security

  516. better.

  517. Just confessing.

  518. Do you see how

  519. that's little faith?

  520. God, I believe you

  521. exist but I don't

  522. believe it's best to

  523. trust you in this

  524. area.

  525. God, I believe you

  526. created the world but

  527. I don't believe you

  528. know better than I do

  529. how it works.

  530. God, I believe you

  531. sent your son to

  532. rescue me forever

  533. and I'll sing about

  534. it but I don't

  535. believe you will care

  536. for me when I'm

  537. alone or hungry or

  538. hurting.

  539. Little faith.

  540. Jesus is telling us

  541. over and over here

  542. don't live like that.

  543. Don't have small

  544. thoughts of me.

  545. Don't neglect your

  546. relationship with God.

  547. Now, yes, be a

  548. faithful planner like

  549. the ant.

  550. Yes, work hard as

  551. God tells you to but

  552. don't leave God

  553. behind to make a

  554. run at life on your

  555. own for even one

  556. busy season.

  557. Don't do it.

  558. Don't make a run at a

  559. season when I'm just

  560. going to live by the

  561. things I see for now

  562. rather than by faith.

  563. For so many reasons

  564. Jesus says don't be

  565. anxious.

  566. Don't be distracted.

  567. Don't miss what's

  568. most important.

  569. That's so easy to do.

  570. I want us to hear

  571. Jesus' solution to

  572. these problems and

  573. then talk about how

  574. his solution transforms

  575. our lives to be the

  576. peaceful, marveling

  577. servants that I talked

  578. about a minute ago.

  579. You know how Jesus

  580. often teaches.

  581. He's making a point

  582. and he looks around

  583. for examples that

  584. are right there in

  585. front of the people

  586. he's teaching.

  587. And what he's wanting

  588. to teach right here,

  589. he wants to show

  590. these anxiously

  591. distracted followers a

  592. focus on God, who he

  593. is, his character, in

  594. particular God's

  595. commitment to provide.

  596. Provide.

  597. So he makes two

  598. arguments from lesser

  599. things to greater

  600. things.

  601. Verse 26, birds.

  602. Look at the birds of

  603. the air.

  604. Open your eyes, he

  605. says.

  606. They neither sow nor

  607. reap nor gather into

  608. barns, yet your heavenly

  609. Father feeds them.

  610. Are you not of more

  611. value than they?

  612. Look, if God feeds the

  613. bird, his eye is on

  614. the sparrow, right?

  615. Then can't you trust

  616. him to feed you?

  617. How much more is he

  618. going to feed you,

  619. right?

  620. And by the way, birds

  621. don't have Costco to

  622. buy food.

  623. They don't have freezers

  624. to stockpile food.

  625. They don't have a garden

  626. to grow food, except the

  627. one in your backyard they

  628. think is theirs.

  629. They don't rely on

  630. themselves, do they?

  631. That's not how it

  632. works.

  633. They rely on their

  634. creator to provide, and

  635. how well does he do?

  636. Marvelously well.

  637. Imagine how much more

  638. he will do for you.

  639. Then Jesus says, another

  640. example, verse 28,

  641. flowers, the lilies of

  642. the field.

  643. Verse 28, why are you

  644. anxious about clothing?

  645. Consider the lilies of the

  646. field, how they grow.

  647. They neither toil nor

  648. spin.

  649. They're not working hard.

  650. Yet I tell you, even

  651. Solomon in all his glory

  652. was not arrayed like one

  653. of these.

  654. Look at how beautiful

  655. these flowers are.

  656. Picture a beautiful flower

  657. in your mind.

  658. God really put some

  659. unique design into

  660. gorgeous plants all

  661. around us.

  662. And did you know, not a

  663. single flower woke up

  664. this morning and thought,

  665. I better put on a nicer

  666. dress, or get to a

  667. tanning bed before

  668. anyone sees me.

  669. Or if I don't improve

  670. my skin care routine,

  671. or start hitting the

  672. gym harder, I won't

  673. look beautiful in ten

  674. years.

  675. Not one flower bought

  676. that.

  677. And yet they're so

  678. beautiful that we stop

  679. to take pictures of

  680. them.

  681. If God so clothes the

  682. grass of the field, which

  683. today is alive and

  684. tomorrow is thrown into

  685. the oven, will he not

  686. much more clothe you?

  687. Oh, you of little faith,

  688. you're an eternal soul.

  689. Will not your creator

  690. make you beautiful?

  691. Forever beautiful?

  692. Beautiful?

  693. Deep beauty from the

  694. inside out in every

  695. way?

  696. Won't he do that for

  697. you?

  698. That's what Romans 8.32

  699. reminds us of.

  700. That if God did not

  701. withhold his own son,

  702. but loved us so much

  703. that he gave us that

  704. greatest of all gifts,

  705. how will he not also

  706. along with him

  707. graciously give us

  708. all things?

  709. He saved you from your

  710. sins.

  711. He's not leaving you

  712. consistently without

  713. lunch.

  714. He's given you his

  715. most precious gift.

  716. He's not withholding

  717. the good life that

  718. you're chasing somewhere

  719. else, right?

  720. He's brought you into

  721. relationship with him

  722. forever.

  723. He's not leaving you

  724. alone right now, is

  725. he?

  726. No way.

  727. See, if there's a

  728. problem beneath the

  729. problem, there's a

  730. solution beneath the

  731. solution.

  732. It's the relationship,

  733. right?

  734. We must focus on our

  735. relationship with God.

  736. Now, we've been

  737. talking about that a

  738. lot this year.

  739. You've heard me use the

  740. phrase, a faith

  741. priority.

  742. Owning your own

  743. faith, not just

  744. coasting spiritually

  745. while investing all

  746. your time and energy

  747. elsewhere.

  748. where, but even

  749. though we hear that,

  750. there are a lot of

  751. things competing for

  752. our time and

  753. attention, aren't

  754. there?

  755. Notice how Jesus

  756. points out this

  757. underlying solution

  758. here.

  759. Verse 26, your

  760. heavenly father

  761. feeds the birds.

  762. father, not their

  763. father, but yours.

  764. You have a special

  765. relationship with him.

  766. Verse 32, your

  767. heavenly father knows

  768. that you need them all,

  769. everything you need.

  770. So you focus on your

  771. relationship with God.

  772. You want to know where

  773. to start?

  774. first, seek first the

  775. kingdom of God and his

  776. righteousness.

  777. That relationship.

  778. Seek that first.

  779. And he is such a

  780. generous provider, such

  781. a gracious father, that

  782. as long as you have him,

  783. you'll have all those

  784. other things that you

  785. obsess over and get

  786. anxiously distracted by.

  787. You'll have all of them

  788. except perhaps the ones

  789. that he knows you don't

  790. need.

  791. There's one thing, the

  792. main thing, it's your

  793. relationship with God,

  794. your faith priority.

  795. Jesus says you don't

  796. have to rush around

  797. wondering where to

  798. start.

  799. You don't even have to

  800. find a new book that

  801. tells you how to do it

  802. better, which activity

  803. is most important, what

  804. needs to land on your

  805. calendar first to make

  806. you successful this

  807. year.

  808. He says seek first

  809. God's kingdom, his

  810. righteousness.

  811. These are words for

  812. life in relationship with

  813. the one who made you,

  814. remember, for himself.

  815. That's why he made you.

  816. That's why you exist.

  817. See, Jesus is heading to

  818. the cross to secure not

  819. merely the forgiveness of

  820. our sins, but ultimately

  821. our adoption into the

  822. family of God.

  823. We have a father who

  824. cares for us as his

  825. children even more than

  826. he does for birds and

  827. grass and flowers and he

  828. cares for them really well.

  829. And he is calling us to

  830. enjoy him, to obey him,

  831. to get to know him more,

  832. to live with him in every

  833. moment and to trust him

  834. with the many things that

  835. might otherwise distract us

  836. from the best thing.

  837. Jesus says you can slow

  838. down, you can breathe,

  839. because you have a good

  840. and gracious father.

  841. A pastor friend of mine

  842. tells the story of a young

  843. boy who was adopted into a

  844. family after spending his

  845. early years as an orphan,

  846. where he was mistreated,

  847. malnourished, often went

  848. extended periods of time

  849. without getting any food.

  850. Not long after being

  851. adopted into his new

  852. family, the parents began

  853. to notice that food was

  854. missing from the pantry

  855. and the fridge more and

  856. more.

  857. And one day the father

  858. went into his son's room

  859. and he found him

  860. underneath his bed with a

  861. stockpile of food.

  862. The boy explained, of

  863. course, that he was

  864. afraid that the food would

  865. run out, that he wouldn't

  866. be given anymore.

  867. So in his anxiety over

  868. those possibilities, he had

  869. attempted to provide for

  870. himself by stashing food

  871. under his bed.

  872. You can understand that.

  873. The father understood, but it

  874. broke his heart, right?

  875. And it gave him the chance

  876. to reassure his son,

  877. you're my son.

  878. All the food in this house

  879. belongs to me and it is

  880. yours because you're my son.

  881. I will always make sure that

  882. you get fed.

  883. You don't have to provide for

  884. yourself.

  885. You don't have to be anxious.

  886. I hope you can hear your

  887. father saying that to you

  888. this morning because there's

  889. more of us than we'd like to

  890. admit approaching this next

  891. season like the boy under the

  892. bed.

  893. Have you been neglecting your

  894. relationship with your father

  895. and trying in any number of

  896. ways to provide for yourself?

  897. Is it leading to anxiety, to

  898. frantic attempts at self-reliance,

  899. desperate efforts to provide

  900. what you need and maybe what

  901. you're feeling is very little

  902. peace and very little rest?

  903. Slow down, Jesus says.

  904. One thing, just one thing,

  905. seek ye first.

  906. Focus on your relationship with

  907. God.

  908. I know it may seem like you

  909. won't get cared for, but

  910. trust me, he says, all these

  911. things will be added to you as

  912. well.

  913. You just focus on the one

  914. thing first.

  915. Actually live like you have a

  916. good father.

  917. Make it your ambition to lead a

  918. quiet life at peace with God,

  919. learning more about how good and

  920. gracious your father is,

  921. rejoicing more in his kindness

  922. to you, simple gifts.

  923. Now you may hear me describe a

  924. life like that and you think,

  925. oh, that's some super spiritual

  926. kind of life.

  927. I want to suggest it's super

  928. practical.

  929. It doesn't need to feel weird.

  930. See, the result of God's solution

  931. to the problem we all struggle

  932. with is that because he has

  933. solved your biggest problems,

  934. he has met your deepest needs,

  935. you can live that kind of

  936. focused life and find that it's

  937. still a fulfilled life at the

  938. same time that all these things

  939. are added unto you.

  940. And his kingdom, when we talk

  941. about seeking first his kingdom,

  942. that's huge.

  943. That touches every area of life.

  944. That's not merely some churchy

  945. thing that's confined to this

  946. building or this day of the week

  947. or this hour of the day.

  948. I want to give you some suggestions

  949. of what it can look like to seek

  950. first his kingdom and righteousness.

  951. Your relationship with him focused

  952. on his rule everywhere and his way

  953. in everything.

  954. That's what that means.

  955. His rule everywhere,

  956. his way in everything.

  957. These, to be clear, are just

  958. suggestions, okay?

  959. Not biblical directives.

  960. You can think of your own.

  961. Perhaps just to be merciful to

  962. yourself, just pick one or two

  963. areas that you want to focus on for

  964. now.

  965. How could your life change as you

  966. focus on the main thing?

  967. Perhaps start family worship or

  968. devotionals, discussions again this

  969. week.

  970. I cannot count how many times I've

  971. stopped and started.

  972. There's no limit.

  973. But spend time together focusing on

  974. God.

  975. Not just so you can feel more

  976. spiritual, but so your kids get to

  977. know their heavenly father more and

  978. actually know that he's more

  979. important to you than algebra.

  980. They'll be delighted to know that.

  981. Maybe even more delighted to know

  982. that you know that.

  983. Seek first God's kingdom at work.

  984. I say that specifically because it's

  985. a place where we're really tempted

  986. to build our own kingdoms rather

  987. than God's kingdom.

  988. Perhaps by prioritizing Sabbath rest

  989. for yourself or your company.

  990. Perhaps by pursuing prophets in God

  991. honoring ways that care for the

  992. needy.

  993. Perhaps by carving out time in your

  994. calendar to meet with God on your

  995. busiest days.

  996. Just block it off before you get

  997. there.

  998. Another idea.

  999. Do something sacrificial with your

  1000. time or your money.

1001. Like perhaps instead of committing to

1002. the gym every night, commit one or

1003. two nights a week to partnering with a

1004. neighbor in a faith and finances

  1005. class.

1006. Like using your discretionary money to

  1007. bless someone else.

1008. Start looking at your life through the

1009. lens of abundance because, listen,

1010. you have a father who has given you the

1011. kingdom and he's given you eternity to

  1012. enjoy it.

  1013. Can you believe that?

1014. Everything you need and all the time you

1015. could imagine to enjoy it.

1016. So you are freed up to sacrifice and find

1017. yourself not empty but full again and

  1018. again.

1019. Consider your grace group intentionally as you

  1020. reconnect this fall.

1021. If you're not in one, maybe that makes the

1022. calendar before some other things you're about

  1023. to fill in.

1024. But when you are in one, prioritize engaging in

1025. those relationships beyond just meetings.

1026. Ask others in the group, how are they doing

  1027. with Jesus?

1028. How God's growing or teaching them lately?

1029. How you can pray for their spiritual good?

1030. If it feels weird to you and awkward, just

  1031. blame it on me.

1032. Pastor Will told me to ask, how can I pray for

  1033. your spiritual good?

  1034. Fine.

1035. But do it and pray.

1036. And watch God deepen those relationships.

1037. How could you seek first God's kingdom with

  1038. your words?

1039. The tongue has so much power to build up, to

1040. tear down, but a heart seeking first God's

1041. kingdom is looking for fellow travelers on that

1042. road to encourage with a note, with a word,

1043. evaluating how my social media comments are

1044. pointing to Jesus or may need to be left unsaid.

1045. Maybe starting to pray every Sunday afternoon

1046. about someone I saw this morning or someone I

  1047. missed this morning.

1048. Someone who would benefit from hearing from me.

  1049. One last thought.

1050. This one probably more of a biblical directive

  1051. than the others.

1052. Commit to praying daily, to talking with God.

1053. If that's what he made you for, it's a great place to

1054. start this exploration of what it means in your life to

  1055. seek first his kingdom.

1056. Because if you use the Lord's prayer we prayed together

1057. earlier, you're going to pray, thy kingdom come.

1058. And you could say, God, I'm not even sure what that means,

1059. but would you show me what that means in my life today?

1060. You could ask him that every morning.

1061. You could pray for people who don't yet know the king and for

1062. boldness to share the good news with them.

1063. Just slow down and talk with your father.

1064. I'm not trying to tell you exactly how to live your life.

1065. I certainly am not trying to have you leave here with a longer

1066. list of to-dos heaped on you.

  1067. That's not my goal.

1068. I don't know what seek ye first God's kingdom needs to look like

1069. in each of our lives specifically.

1070. I do know that Jesus is telling us where to start.

1071. And unless we are so pridefully self-confident that we think we know

1072. better than he does how to run our lives, then we start with him.

  1073. I'm listening in relationship.

1074. We ought to receive his direction to us today from his word as a gift

1075. because we don't have to guess the organizing principle of life

1076. or the top priority we should have this fall or any other time.

1077. He doesn't leave us there wondering.

1078. Do you ever feel like you're trying to hold about a dozen different things at once?

1079. Do you ever not feel that way?

1080. Do you ever feel like you just keep dropping more and more of them?

1081. God is saying to you this morning, just you hold one.

  1082. Can you hold one?

1083. And he has big and strong, capable arms to hold all the rest.

1084. He's saying, hand them off.

  1085. Bring them with you.

  1086. Give them to me.

1087. If we're willing to start there, to slow down, to avoid all the potential distractions

1088. and be with him and follow his path, Jesus is saying,

1089. there, right there is true abundant life.

1090. There really is a peace that your heavenly father knows what you need

  1091. and delights to provide.

  1092. There's a wonder, a love living with wonder

1093. that God has placed you in a glorious creation

1094. to enjoy more of his glory

1095. and he doesn't want you to miss the small things this week.

  1096. There's a purpose.

1097. There's a driving purpose that you can live for

1098. and you can love others

1099. and you can find as you do

1100. that someone is looking out for your needs

  1101. while you're focused elsewhere.

1102. Jesus says, don't worry, you of little faith.

1103. Watch your faith grow big in your big God

1104. who cares for you, his child.

1105. He says, this is going to be great.

  1106. Trust me.

1107. Keep your eye on the ball.

1108. Seek first his kingdom and righteousness.

1109. Let's ask for his help.

1110. Jesus, you know how much we struggle with this.

1111. You tell us over and over because you love us

1112. and you want what's best for us

1113. and forgive us for not listening,

1114. for not listening in a way that intends to have our lives

  1115. be any different

1116. because we're pretty sure we already know

1117. what our priorities should be.

1118. Father, forgive me for that.

  1119. You do know best.

  1120. You are trustworthy.

1121. You care for a lot of sparrows

  1122. really well.

1123. How much do you love us?

1124. How much more have you invited us

  1125. into your family

1126. to be the objects of your great provision,

  1127. your divine affection,

  1128. your tender mercy?

  1129. We need it.

1130. And help us not to go somewhere else

1131. looking for it this week.

1132. Might we live with you

1133. and for you because we trust you.

1134. We ask in your name, Jesus.

  1135. Amen.
