  1. And it's on page 927, and Harry is going to read that, so Jonah 2, he's going to perish.

  2. Jonah chapter 2, the whole chapter.

    Jonah 2 chapter mention

  3. Yeah, the whole chapter, Harry.

  4. And don't generally get sight of the fish, right?

  5. From inside the fish, Jonah prayed to the Lord his God.

  6. He said, In my distress I called to the Lord, and he answered me.

  7. From the depths of the grave I called for help.

  8. And you listened to my cry.

  9. You hurled me into the deep, into the very heart of the seas, and the currents swirled about me.

  10. All your waves and breakers swept over me.

  11. I said, I have been banished from your sight.

  12. Yet I will look again towards your holy temple.

  13. The engulfing waters threatened me.

  14. The deep surrounded me.

  15. Seaweed was wrapped around my head.

  16. To the roots of the mountains I sank down.

  17. The earth beneath barred me in forever.

  18. But you brought my life up from the pit, O Lord my God.

  19. When my life was ebbing away, I remembered you, Lord.

  20. And my prayer rose to you, to your holy temple.

  21. Those who cling to worthless idols forfeit the grace that could be there.

  22. But I, with a song of thanksgiving, will sacrifice to you.

  23. What I have bowed I will make good.

  24. Salvation comes from the Lord.

  25. And the Lord commanded the fish.

  26. And it prompted Jonah unto try not.

  27. Thank you very much.

  28. Keep your finger.

  29. 1, 2, 1, 0.

  30. Hebrews chapter 12, verses 1 to 6.

    Hebrews 12:1–6

  31. And then verse 11.

  32. Thank you.

  33. Hebrews chapter 12, verses 1 to 6.

    Hebrews 12:1–6

  34. And verse 11.

  35. Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses,

  36. let us throw off everything that hinders,

  37. and the sin that so easily entangles,

  38. and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.

  39. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith,

  40. who for the joy set before him endured the cross,

  41. scorning its shame,

  42. and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God,

  43. considering him who endured such opposition from sinful men,

  44. so that he will not grow weary and lose heart.

  45. When you struggle against sin,

  46. you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood,

  47. and you have forgotten that word of encouragement that addresses you as sons.

  48. My son, do not make light of the Lord's discipline,

  49. and do not lose heart when he rebukes you,

  50. because the Lord disciplines those he loves,

  51. and punishes everyone he accepts as a son.

  52. And verse 11.

  53. No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful.

  54. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace

  55. for those who have been trained by it.

  56. When I first came to Carigoline,

  57. I met somebody who works with seaweed.

  58. I've never met anybody before who's met with seaweed, wrong.

  59. Is that man?

  60. Now I've discovered that Jonah was probably the first seaweed man.

  61. The first five seaweed was wrapped around his head.

  62. Maybe he was the founder of cyber colloids.

  63. I don't know.

  64. But we're not here to think about that.

  65. We're here to think about Jonah.

  66. The title we've given to this morning is

  67. Submitting to Grace,

  68. and we're going to pray and ask for God's help

  69. as we look at this together.

  70. Let's do that.

  71. Father, thank you for your grace to us.

  72. We're people who are in need.

  73. We need your help.

  74. And so in your grace,

  75. pour out your Holy Spirit upon us.

  76. Generously fill us so that we may understand better

  77. your word to us,

  78. how it applies to our lives,

  79. and how it all works out in practice.

  80. Please encourage us through this morning, we pray.

  81. In Jesus' name.

  82. Amen.

  83. The Horse Whisperer.

  84. It's a bit of a chick flick,

  85. but it's a film starring Robert Redford,

  86. who is highly regarded as a horse tamer.

  87. He takes his wild and stubborn and aggressive horses,

  88. and he gently breaks them to the control of the owner.

  89. By gently applying pressure,

  90. at times it can seem cruel and harsh.

  91. He tames the stubborn will

  92. till it submits to the will of the Master.

  93. Now in our story of Jonah in chapter 2,

  94. it seems that God is having to tame

  95. a very stubborn runaway.

  96. In chapter 1,

  97. Jonah verse 2 was told,

  98. Go!

  99. But verse 3,

  100. Jonah ran away from the Lord.

  101. God had called him, do you remember,

  102. to go to Nineveh

  103. to preach against that great city.

  104. But Jonah had other plans.

  105. Stubbornly and disobediently,

  106. he ran in the other direction.

  107. The last thing that Jonah wanted

  108. was for his enemies,

  109. the people of Nineveh,

  110. to experience God's grace

  111. and forgiveness.

  112. So God gently applies a little bit of pressure

  113. to tame this stubborn will

  114. so that he submits to the will of the Master.

  115. And that pressure comes,

  116. verse 4 of chapter 1,

  117. that the Lord sent a great wind on the sea

  118. and such a violent storm arose

  119. that the ship threatened to break up.

  120. Surely this is going to tame Jonah.

  121. But it seems Jonah is somewhat arrogant.

  122. Look at verse 5.

  123. All the sailors were afraid

  124. and they cried out to their own God

  125. and they began to throw the cargo

  126. into the sea to lighten the ships.

  127. But Jonah had gone below deck

  128. where he lay down and fell

  129. into a deep sleep

  130. right the way through the storm.

  131. It seems that he is quite content

  132. to be disobedient.

  133. It's as if Jonah is saying,

  134. God, you can do what you like.

  135. You can throw storms,

  136. but I ain't going.

  137. But God, through the storm,

  138. does not back down.

  139. And eventually Jonah begins to be tamed.

  140. Verse 11.

  141. The sea was getting rougher and rougher.

  142. So they asked him,

  143. what should we do to make the sea

  144. calm down for us?

  145. Jonah replied,

  146. pick me up

  147. and throw me into the sea.

  148. I know that it is my fault

  149. that this great storm

  150. has come upon you.

  151. It seems that God,

  152. through the storm,

  153. has got Jonah's attention

  154. and he's beginning

  155. to be tamed.

  156. Now at one level,

  157. Jonah's request

  158. seems a little bit like

  159. a mad act of suicide.

  160. Throw me into the sea!

  161. They all knew

  162. if he was going to be

  163. thrown into the sea,

  164. that would be the end of it.

  165. But this isn't a rash decision

  166. by Jonah.

  167. This is a purposeful submission

  168. to God's grace.

  169. The request of being thrown overboard

  170. is admitting defeat.

  171. It's saying to God,

  172. I surrender!

  173. You see,

  174. Jonah knew

  175. who God was

  176. and what he was like.

  177. Look back at chapter 1,

  178. verse 9.

  179. He knew that he was

  180. the God of heaven

  181. who made the sea

  182. and who made

  183. the land.

  184. We sang about it

  185. at the beginning.

  186. Indescribable,

  187. uncontainable.

  188. God is so big.

  189. So for Jonah

  190. to be thrown

  191. into the sea

  192. was in fact

  193. to be thrown

  194. into the hands

  195. of God's grace.

  196. Just to be thrown

  197. into the sea

  198. wasn't the end

  199. of his life.

  200. He was throwing himself

  201. upon God.

  202. And I think

  203. that's what Jonah

  204. is getting at

  205. in chapter 2,

  206. verse 8.

  207. Where we have

  208. this phrase,

  209. those who cling

  210. to worthless idols

  211. forfeit the grace

  212. that could be theirs.

  213. An idol,

  214. explains Tim Keller

  215. in his book

  216. Counterfeit Gods,

  217. he says,

  218. an idol is anything

  219. more important

  220. to you than God.

  221. Anything that absorbs

  222. your heart

  223. and imagination

  224. more than God.

  225. Anything that you

  226. seek to give you

  227. what only God

  228. can give.

  229. Now for Jonah,

  230. his idol

  231. was autonomy.

  232. He wanted to be

  233. his own boss,

  234. to rule his own life,

  235. to be in charge

  236. of his life,

  237. to do what he wanted.

  238. That was what

  239. was most important

  240. to him.

  241. But as Jonah

  242. was discovering

  243. to push God out,

  244. to rule

  245. your own life,

  246. is to forfeit

  247. the grace

  248. that could be yours.

  249. I think we all

  250. need to be tamed

  251. just like Jonah

  252. needed to be tamed.

  253. Because we all

  254. have the same

  255. kind of idol

  256. as Jonah.

  257. We all want

  258. to run our own lives,

  259. we all want

  260. to live our own way,

  261. we all want

  262. to pretend

  263. that we're God.

  264. We want to be

  265. in control of everything

  266. and we make up

  267. the rules

  268. for our own life.

  269. But to fight God,

  270. to run away from him,

  271. to disobey,

  272. and stubbornly

  273. refuse to submit

  274. to his will,

  275. is to forfeit

  276. the grace

  277. and love of God

  278. that could be ours.

  279. So Jonah

  280. has come to see

  281. that the only

  282. place to be

  283. is in the security

  284. of God's hands.

  285. it's no good

  286. running away

  287. from him.

  288. The only place

  289. for him

  290. is to be

  291. with God.

  292. And so

  293. Jonah

  294. throws himself

  295. or he requests

  296. that they

  297. throw him

  298. into the sea

  299. because in doing

  300. that he is

  301. submitting himself

  302. to God's grace.

  303. We all need

  304. to be tamed

  305. and we all need

  306. to submit

  307. and surrender.

  308. But how do

  309. we do it?

  310. Does that mean

  311. we all have

  312. to jump

  313. into our cars

  314. and drive

  315. off down

  316. to cross

  317. Aden

  318. and jump

  319. off the pier

  320. into the sea

  321. and expect

  322. a great big

  323. fish to swallow

  324. us up?

  325. Now I don't

  326. think we should

  327. do that.

  328. That would

  329. be suicide.

  330. But I think

  331. here in chapter

  332. two through

  333. Jonah's prayer

  334. we do have

  335. a model

  336. of how we

  337. should submit

  338. to God's

  339. grace

  340. in our life.

  341. So first

  342. in this prayer

  343. submitting

  344. to the

  345. personal God

  346. who listens.

  347. Verse one

  348. chapter two

  349. From inside

  350. the fish

  351. Jonah prayed

  352. to the Lord

  353. his God.

  354. He said

  355. In my distress

  356. I called

  357. to the Lord

  358. and he answered

  359. me.

  360. From the depths

  361. of the grave

  362. I called

  363. for help

  364. and you

  365. listened

  366. to my cry.

  367. Now there's

  368. something

  369. that seems

  370. not quite

  371. right about

  372. this prayer.

  373. It sounds

  374. a little bit

  375. presumptuous

  376. and almost

  377. disrespectful.

  378. Remember

  379. Jonah has

  380. stubbornly

  381. and disobediently

  382. run away

  383. from God

  384. but yet he

  385. has the audacity

  386. look at verse

  387. one

  388. to pray to

  389. and he refers

  390. to him as

  391. the Lord

  392. his God.

  393. In fact

  394. in verse six

  395. it's even

  396. stronger

  397. at the very

  398. end of verse six

  399. he called

  400. him

  401. O Lord

  402. my God.

  403. How could

  404. he do that

  405. after all

  406. his running

  407. away?

  408. How could

  409. God still

  410. be his God

  411. my God?

  412. Well this

  413. is the kind

  414. of God

  415. that we have

  416. that even

  417. in the midst

  418. of our sin

  419. and disobedience

  420. he is still

  421. the personal

  422. intimate

  423. God.

  424. He doesn't

  425. block

  426. his ears

  427. to our

  428. cry and

  429. say

  430. sorry

  431. can't hear

  432. you wouldn't

  433. listen to me

  434. Jonah

  435. so I'm not

  436. going to

  437. listen to you

  438. tit for tat.

  439. No God's

  440. not like that.

  441. God is

  442. gracious

  443. slow to

  444. anger

  445. and abounding

  446. in love

  447. and so Jonah

  448. can say with

  449. confidence

  450. that he cried

  451. out

  452. he answered

  453. me

  454. he called

  455. for help

  456. and you

  457. listened

  458. to my

  459. cry.

  460. Jonah had

  461. written God

  462. out of his

  463. life

  464. but for

  465. those who

  466. belong to

  467. God

  468. God

  469. will never

  470. write you

  471. out

  472. of his

  473. life.

  474. God

  475. remains

  476. steadfast

  477. and loyal

  478. so that we

  479. can always

  480. turn to our

  481. personal God

  482. confident

  483. that he

  484. will listen.

  485. Sometimes

  486. people say

  487. to me

  488. when they're

  489. in a state

  490. of running

  491. away from

  492. God

  493. I can do

  494. it myself

  495. in my own

  496. dialoguing

  497. with God.

  498. There's no

  499. way

  500. after what

  501. I've done

  502. that God

  503. is going

  504. to have me

  505. back.

  506. There's no

  507. way after

  508. what I've

  509. said

  510. that God

  511. is going

  512. to listen

  513. to me.

  514. Well we

  515. should never

  516. blame God

  517. that he is

  518. not going

  519. to listen.

  520. His grace

  521. is wider

  522. than we

  523. could ever

  524. imagine

  525. and even

  526. in the midst

  527. of our

  528. sin and

  529. disobedience

  530. even in our

  531. running

  532. he is still

  533. the personal

  534. and intimate

  535. God who

  536. comes close

  537. and who

  538. will answer

  539. and who

  540. will listen.

  541. So this is

  542. where submission

  543. to grace

  544. starts.

  545. It's crying

  546. out

  547. independence

  548. on a

  549. personal

  550. God

  551. who will

  552. always

  553. listen

  554. and answer.

  555. But then

  556. we discover

  557. something else.

  558. Submitting

  559. to the

  560. sovereign

  561. Lord

  562. who

  563. intervenes.

  564. If the

  565. first part

  566. of the

  567. prayer

  568. seems

  569. somewhat

  570. disrespectful

  571. this next

  572. part seems

  573. contradictory.

  574. look at what

  575. Jonah says

  576. in chapter

  577. 1 verse

  578. 12.

  579. He said

  580. to the

  581. sailors

  582. pick me

  583. up

  584. and throw

  585. me into

  586. the sea.

  587. Then in

  588. verse 15

  589. of chapter

  590. 1

  591. the sailors

  592. took

  593. Jonah

  594. and they

  595. threw him

  596. overboard

  597. and the

  598. raging sea

  599. grew calm.

  600. man.

  601. Now look

  602. at chapter

  603. 2

  604. verse 3.

  605. Remember

  606. he's

  607. praying

  608. talking to

  609. God

  610. and look

  611. what he

  612. says in

  613. verse 3.

  614. You

  615. God

  616. you hurled

  617. me

  618. into the

  619. deep

  620. into the

  621. very heart

  622. of the

  623. sea

  624. and the

  625. current

  626. swirled

  627. about me

  628. all your

  629. waves

  630. and breakers

  631. swept

  632. over me.

  633. So my

  634. dear Watson

  635. who threw

  636. Jonah

  637. overboard?

  638. Was it the

  639. sailors

  640. or was it

  641. God?

  642. Well the

  643. sailors

  644. physically

  645. manhandled

  646. him and

  647. picked him

  648. up and

  649. threw him

  650. into the

  651. sea.

  652. but I

  653. think the

  654. bigger one

  655. behind it

  656. that God

  657. stands behind

  658. their action.

  659. I think

  660. this is what

  661. chapter 2

  662. is telling

  663. us.

  664. That God

  665. is the

  666. one who

  667. has ordered

  668. these events

  669. to take

  670. place.

  671. Chapter 1

  672. verse 4

  673. told us

  674. that it

  675. was the

  676. Lord who

  677. sent this

  678. great storm.

  679. He sent

  680. the winds.

  681. He purposed

  682. and willed

  683. that Jonah

  684. would go

  685. overboard.

  686. Now that

  687. tells us

  688. that the

  689. events and

  690. circumstances

  691. of our

  692. lives

  693. do not

  694. happen by

  695. chance.

  696. There's no

  697. such thing

  698. as luck.

  699. The trouble

  700. that we

  701. find ourselves

  702. in,

  703. the suffering

  704. that comes

  705. our way,

  706. yes,

  707. God

  708. stands

  709. behind it

  710. all to

  711. fulfill his

  712. purpose in

  713. our lives.

  714. what?

  715. In

  716. protest,

  717. we

  718. stamp our

  719. feet,

  720. we say,

  721. God could

  722. never bring

  723. anything bad

  724. or unpleasant

  725. into our

  726. lives.

  727. The God

  728. that I

  729. know is

  730. a God

  731. of love.

  732. He would

  733. never do

  734. anything

  735. rotten

  736. and mean.

  737. Well,

  738. who are we

  739. that created

  740. to tell

  741. our creator

  742. what he

  743. should do?

  744. And as

  745. much as we

  746. may come

  747. to struggle

  748. and try

  749. and work

  750. out what's

  751. going on,

  752. and it

  753. will take

  754. a whole

  755. other sermon

  756. and a big

  757. series to

  758. explore that

  759. idea,

  760. in this

  761. context,

  762. it seems

  763. that God

  764. is ordering

  765. the events

  766. deliberately

  767. and purposefully

  768. in the life

  769. of Jonah

  770. to bring

  771. him back

  772. to himself.

  773. And if

  774. God will do

  775. that for

  776. Jonah,

  777. why can't

  778. he do

  779. it with

  780. us?

  781. In fact,

  782. Jonah has

  783. come to

  784. see that

  785. what God

  786. did,

  787. he did

  788. for the

  789. purpose of

  790. changing

  791. his life

  792. around.

  793. Look at

  794. verse 4.

  795. He said,

  796. I have

  797. been banished

  798. from your

  799. sight.

  800. Verse 5,

  801. the engulfing

  802. waters

  803. threatened

  804. me,

  805. the deep

  806. surrounded

  807. me,

  808. seaweed

  809. was wrapped

  810. around my

  811. head,

  812. to the

  813. roots of

  814. the mountains

  815. I sank

  816. down,

  817. the earth

  818. beneath

  819. barred me

  820. in forever.

  821. Do you

  822. remember back

  823. in chapter

  824. 1,

  825. verse 3,

  826. it tells

  827. us there

  828. that Jonah

  829. ran away

  830. and the

  831. translation

  832. is literally

  833. Jonah was

  834. running away

  835. from the

  836. presence

  837. of the

  838. Lord.

  839. Of course,

  840. it's rather

  841. silly,

  842. isn't it?

  843. We can't

  844. run from

  845. the presence

  846. of God.

  847. How can

  848. we run

  849. away from

  850. the creator

  851. who made

  852. the sea

  853. and the

  854. land?

  855. We can't

  856. get away

  857. from God

  858. even if

  859. we tried.

  860. But you

  861. know what?

  862. God can

  863. remove his

  864. presence

  865. from us.

  866. And that's

  867. what Jonah

  868. was experiencing

  869. in verse 4.

  870. He said,

  871. I have been

  872. banished

  873. from your

  874. sight.

  875. God

  876. took Jonah

  877. and he

  878. put him

  879. into the

  880. storm.

  881. He allowed

  882. Jonah

  883. to sink

  884. beneath the

  885. waves.

  886. He allowed

  887. him to

  888. struggle

  889. under the

  890. weight of

  891. seaweed.

  892. He allowed

  893. him to

  894. fall to

  895. the very

  896. foundation

  897. of the

  898. mountains.

  899. As if God

  900. was saying

  901. through it

  902. all,

  903. if you

  904. want to

  905. run away

  906. from my

  907. presence,

  908. Jonah,

  909. this is

  910. what it's

  911. going to be

  912. like.

  913. And it's

  914. only when

  915. Jonah

  916. begins to

  917. submit to

  918. God's

  919. sovereign

  920. control

  921. over his

  922. life and

  923. over the

  924. world that

  925. he made

  926. that God

  927. intervenes.

  928. Look at

  929. the end of

  930. verse 6.

  931. In the

  932. midst of

  933. all that

  934. going down,

  935. he can

  936. say,

  937. but you

  938. brought my

  939. life up

  940. from the

  941. pit.

  942. O Lord

  943. my God.

  944. It's at

  945. this point,

  946. I imagine,

  947. when the

  948. great fish

  949. was provided

  950. that God

  951. intervenes in

  952. his life and

  953. Jonah is

  954. saved.

  955. And no

  956. wonder he

  957. can finish

  958. his prayer

  959. at the end

  960. of verse 9.

  961. Salvation

  962. comes from

  963. the Lord.

  964. Now I'm

  965. not saying

  966. that everything

  967. bad that

  968. happens or

  969. every experience

  970. of suffering

  971. is because

  972. you are

  973. running away

  974. from God.

  975. It does not

  976. necessarily mean

  977. if you're in

  978. that place

  979. that you are

  980. running from

  981. God.

  982. We mustn't

  983. think like

  984. that.

  985. But what we

  986. can say

  987. see is that

  988. God will

  989. bring into

  990. our lives

  991. whatever it

  992. takes.

  993. He will

  994. let us

  995. experience

  996. distress.

  997. He will

  998. even let us

  999. experience the

  1000. removal of

  1001. his presence

  1002. only to

  1003. cause us to

  1004. submit to

  1005. his grace

  1006. when we are

  1007. running away

  1008. from him.

  1009. who are we

  1010. to tell the

  1011. creator

  1012. what he

  1013. should do

  1014. in our

  1015. life.

  1016. And this

  1017. is where

  1018. submission to

  1019. grace begins.

  1020. Trusting in a

  1021. sovereign God

  1022. who is in

  1023. control of

  1024. every single

  1025. detail of our

  1026. life.

  1027. A sovereign

  1028. God who

  1029. works to

  1030. intervene

  1031. to bring us

  1032. back to

  1033. himself.

  1034. But then

  1035. there is also

  1036. submitting to

  1037. the gracious

  1038. God who

  1039. restores.

  1040. Jonah's

  1041. experience inside

  1042. the fish of

  1043. the belly and

  1044. through the

  1045. storm, it

  1046. couldn't have

  1047. been easy.

  1048. There is no

  1049. pretending that

  1050. this was hard.

  1051. But God

  1052. uses all of

  1053. these experiences

  1054. to bring Jonah

  1055. back to

  1056. himself.

  1057. And thankfully

  1058. God doesn't

  1059. do things in

  1060. half measures.

  1061. Verse 8

  1062. chapter 2.

  1063. Those who

  1064. cling to

  1065. worthless idols

  1066. forfeit the

  1067. grace that

  1068. could be

  1069. theirs.

  1070. But I,

  1071. says Jonah,

  1072. with a song

  1073. of thanksgiving

  1074. will sacrifice

  1075. to you what

  1076. I have

  1077. vowed I

  1078. will make

  1079. good.

  1080. Salvation

  1081. comes from

  1082. the Lord.

  1083. In other

  1084. words, Jonah

  1085. is making a

  1086. vow, he's

  1087. making a

  1088. promise to

  1089. commit himself

  1090. to God.

  1091. In response

  1092. to God's

  1093. amazing grace

  1094. intervening into

  1095. his life on

  1096. the ship,

  1097. putting him

  1098. into the

  1099. storm,

  1100. providing this

  1101. great big

  1102. fish, Jonah

  1103. responds and

  1104. says,

  1105. you did this

  1106. for me.

  1107. In

  1108. thanksgiving

  1109. for all that

  1110. you have done,

  1111. I am going

  1112. to give my

  1113. life to

  1114. serve you.

  1115. God's

  1116. God's

  1117. intention all

  1118. along.

  1119. God's

  1120. call to

  1121. Jonah had

  1122. never changed

  1123. as we will

  1124. see next

  1125. week in

  1126. chapter 3.

  1127. God still

  1128. comes to

  1129. Jonah and

  1130. he still

  1131. sends him

  1132. to Nineveh.

  1133. Rather than

  1134. throw Jonah

  1135. up onto the

  1136. trash heap

  1137. because he

  1138. failed, he

  1139. graciously

  1140. restores him

  1141. to the

  1142. work that

  1143. he had

  1144. originally

  1145. been called

  1146. to.

  1147. The

  1148. culture that

  1149. we live

  1150. in and

  1151. the society

  1152. that we

  1153. are used

  1154. to gives

  1155. no room

  1156. for failure

  1157. and very

  1158. often the

  1159. church family

  1160. can look

  1161. down on

  1162. those who

  1163. sin and

  1164. disobey and

  1165. just write

  1166. them off and

  1167. say, I

  1168. mean look at

  1169. them, all

  1170. their disobedience

  1171. and their

  1172. sin, out.

  1173. We need to

  1174. take time to

  1175. see how God

  1176. works with

  1177. his people

  1178. and we

  1179. need to be

  1180. gracious with

  1181. one another.

  1182. God does

  1183. not throw

  1184. us out on

  1185. the garbage

  1186. can every

  1187. time we

  1188. fail.

  1189. He

  1190. graciously

  1191. restores

  1192. us, bringing

  1193. us back to

  1194. himself.

  1195. Have a

  1196. look please

  1197. with me at

  1198. Hebrews

    Hebrews 12 chapter mention

  1199. chapter 12.

  1200. It's on

  1201. page 1210.

  1202. When Jonah

  1203. was running

  1204. away from

  1205. God, he

  1206. had certainly

  1207. lost sight of

  1208. God's grace

  1209. God's love.

  1210. Jonah had

  1211. taken his

  1212. focus off

  1213. the God

  1214. who saves.

  1215. So for us,

  1216. chapter 12,

  1217. verse 2,

  1218. let's not

  1219. lose our

  1220. focus.

  1221. Let us,

  1222. verse 2,

  1223. fix our

  1224. eyes on

  1225. Jesus,

  1226. Jesus, the

  1227. author and

  1228. perfecter of

  1229. our faith.

  1230. He is the

  1231. one who

  1232. starts our

  1233. salvation,

  1234. and he is

  1235. the one who

  1236. will complete

  1237. our salvation.

  1238. And how does

  1239. he do it?

  1240. Well, look at

  1241. the rest of

  1242. verse 2.

  1243. who for the

  1244. joy set

  1245. before him

  1246. endured the

  1247. cross,

  1248. scorning its

  1249. shame,

  1250. and sat

  1251. down at the

  1252. right hand of

  1253. the throne of

  1254. God.

  1255. When Jesus

  1256. was on the

  1257. cross,

  1258. it was like

  1259. he was

  1260. thrown by

  1261. his father

  1262. into the

  1263. ultimate

  1264. storm,

  1265. into the

  1266. storm of

  1267. God's

  1268. wrath,

  1269. where Christ

  1270. on the

  1271. cross was

  1272. taking all

  1273. of our

  1274. sin,

  1275. and all

  1276. of our

  1277. disobedience,

  1278. and all

  1279. of our

  1280. failure on

  1281. himself,

  1282. and we're

  1283. told here

  1284. that Jesus

  1285. submitted

  1286. himself to

  1287. the cross,

  1288. he didn't

  1289. run away

  1290. from it,

  1291. because of

  1292. the joy

  1293. that was

  1294. before him.

  1295. The joy

  1296. would be

  1297. our salvation.

  1298. And when

  1299. Jesus died

  1300. on the

  1301. cross,

  1302. it was as

  1303. if he was

  1304. overcome by

  1305. the waves

  1306. of judgment,

  1307. he sank

  1308. down into

  1309. the depths

  1310. of hell

  1311. for you

  1312. and for

  1313. me,

  1314. so that we

  1315. would never

  1316. be banished

  1317. from his

  1318. presence,

  1319. so that we

  1320. would know

  1321. his grace

  1322. in our

  1323. lives each

  1324. and every

  1325. day.

  1326. God

  1327. not only

  1328. saves us,

  1329. his desire

  1330. is to

  1331. keep his

  1332. children,

  1333. and to

  1334. never lose

  1335. his children,

  1336. even if

  1337. and when

  1338. we run

  1339. away from

  1340. him.

  1341. Look at

  1342. verse 5

  1343. of Hebrews

  1344. 12.

  1345. Have you

  1346. forgotten

  1347. that word

  1348. of encouragement

  1349. that addresses

  1350. you as

  1351. sons or

  1352. as children?

  1353. My child,

  1354. do not

  1355. make light

  1356. of the

  1357. Lord's

  1358. discipline.

  1359. Do not

  1360. lose heart

  1361. when he

  1362. rebukes

  1363. you.

  1364. Jonah

  1365. knew what

  1366. it was

  1367. to be

  1368. disciplined.

  1369. Verse 6,

  1370. 9,

  1371. he

  1372. gently

  1373. corrects

  1374. everyone

  1375. he

  1376. accepts

  1377. as a

  1378. child.

  1379. verse 9,

  1380. we have

  1381. all had

  1382. human

  1383. fathers

  1384. who

  1385. disciplined

  1386. us,

  1387. and we

  1388. respected

  1389. them for

  1390. us.

  1391. even if

  1392. our

  1393. human

  1394. fathers

  1395. were

  1396. wrong

  1397. in the

  1398. way

  1399. they

  1400. did

  1401. it,

  1402. and

  1403. even

  1404. though

  1405. they

  1406. can

  1407. get

  1408. things

  1409. wrong,

  1410. the

  1411. comparison

  1412. is not

  1413. to say

  1414. God is

  1415. like our

  1416. fathers,

  1417. but how

  1418. much

  1419. more

  1420. should

  1421. we

  1422. submit

  1423. to the

  1424. father

  1425. of our

  1426. spirits

  1427. and

  1428. live?

  1429. Verse 11,

  1430. no

  1431. discipline

  1432. seems

  1433. pleasant

  1434. at the

  1435. time,

  1436. but

  1437. painful.

  1438. Later on,

  1439. however,

  1440. it produces

  1441. a harvest

  1442. of

  1443. righteousness

  1444. and peace

  1445. for those

  1446. who have

  1447. been trained

  1448. by it.

  1449. And we

  1450. see that

  1451. the hard

  1452. things that

  1453. we go

  1454. through in

  1455. life at

  1456. times is

  1457. all part

  1458. of God's

  1459. love,

  1460. all part

  1461. of his

  1462. grace,

  1463. that he

  1464. doesn't want

  1465. us to

  1466. wander

  1467. too far

  1468. away,

  1469. but he

  1470. wants to

  1471. bring us

  1472. back,

  1473. he wants

  1474. to tame

  1475. us,

  1476. he wants

  1477. to train

  1478. us,

  1479. he wants

  1480. us to

  1481. submit

  1482. to the

  1483. will

  1484. of the

  1485. father.

  1486. God

  1487. in his

  1488. grace sent

  1489. his son,

  1490. the Lord

  1491. Jesus,

  1492. to save

  1493. us,

  1494. and should

  1495. we ever

  1496. run away

  1497. from God,

  1498. by his

  1499. grace,

  1500. he will

  1501. discipline

  1502. us,

  1503. he will

  1504. tame

  1505. us,

  1506. he will

  1507. train

  1508. us,

  1509. he will

  1510. bring

  1511. into our

  1512. lives

  1513. whatever

  1514. he sees

  1515. fit,

  1516. so that

  1517. we stay

  1518. close to

  1519. his grace,

  1520. so that

  1521. we stay

  1522. immersed in

  1523. his love,

  1524. so that

  1525. he will

  1526. never ever

  1527. lose us.

  1528. This is

  1529. where

  1530. submission to

  1531. grace

  1532. begins,

  1533. entrusting

  1534. ourselves

  1535. ourselves

  1536. to a

  1537. gracious

  1538. God

  1539. who will

  1540. restore.

  1541. Let's

  1542. pray

  1543. together.

  1544. Thank you.

  1545. Thank you.

  1546. Thank you.

  1547. Thank you.

  1548. Thank you.

1549. And in so doing we forfeit the grace that is ours.

1550. Lord, please that you would forgive us for the times we run our own way and cling to other things instead of you.

1551. Please be gracious to us.

1552. In your love, gently discipline us so that we come back to you.

1553. Father, if we have drifted, please forgive us.

  1554. Please restore us afresh.

1555. Fill our lives with the joy and the wonder of your amazing grace.

1556. Please overwhelm us with your love.

1557. And let us stay close to you as you hold on to us.

1558. We thank you for the gracious God that you are.

  1559. In Jesus' name.

  1560. Amen.

  1561. We're going to sing a, I think it's a new song.

  1562. Some of you may...
