  1. Okay, Psalm 1.

  2. Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous. For the Lord watches over the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish.

  3. Thanks very much, Ralph. Well, let's pray together and ask for God's help as we listen to his words. Let's pray.

  4. Father, we thank you for your word. We thank you in particular this morning for the Psalms.

  5. We recognize that we need your help in understanding it, so we ask for your Holy Spirit, that your Spirit would give us understanding, opening up our minds to comprehend.

  6. But also taking what we hear to apply it to our lives, that it would change us and transform us, helping us to be the kind of people you created us to be.

  7. Help us to see the power of your word, the difference that it makes to our life. In Jesus' name. Amen.

  8. Amen.

  9. Well, Psalm 1.

  10. I don't know if you know that the present population of our world stands at approximately 6.6 billion.

  11. And of these 6.6 billion people, we live in 245 different countries.

  12. And on top of that, we are further divided into the 16,912 known people groups that there are.

  13. And we are further subdivided into one of the 22 major religions of the world.

  14. Each one has their own culture, their unique customs and sacred traditions.

  15. Each one of us have our own way of deciding right from wrong.

  16. Each one has their own system of how we should live in this world.

  17. But of all the religions and races and cultures that there are, the Bible makes this extraordinary claim.

  18. There are actually only two kinds of people.

  19. And consequently, there are only two ways to live.

  20. Psalm 1 introduces us to the choice that we all have to make.

  21. It's easily divided up.

  22. In this psalm, there is the way of the righteous in verses 1 to 3.

  23. Then there is the way of the wicked in verses 4 to 5.

  24. And then these two ways are contrasted in verse 6.

  25. If you look at verse 6, it says,

  26. For the Lord watches over the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish.

  27. Many cultures, many religions, but only two ways to live.

  28. There's a right way and a wrong way.

  29. There's a way that prospers, and there's a way that perishes.

  30. And what we need to figure out is, what way are we going to live?

  31. So let's have a look at these two ways together.

  32. First, the way of the righteous, which is marked by listening to the word of God.

  33. Look at verse 1.

  34. It says, Blessed is the man.

  35. Blessed simply means a person who is satisfied, somebody who's content and fulfilled.

  36. They're not looking for anything extra.

  37. They have everything.

  38. So this blessed person, this satisfied and fulfilled person, verse 1,

  39. does not walk in the counsel of the wicked,

  40. does not stand in the way of sinners,

  41. and does not sit in the seat of mockers.

  42. They simply don't need to,

  43. because they have everything they need in God's word.

  44. Look at verse 2.

  45. His delight is in the law of the Lord.

  46. The law refers to the scriptures.

  47. It's another way of talking about the Bible, God's word to us.

  48. So rather than listening to the world,

  49. the righteous listens to the word.

  50. And this exercise of listening is not just a one-off event

  51. or something we do on a Sunday morning together.

  52. It is a continuous, lifelong discipline.

  53. Look at the rest of verse 2.

  54. On his law, he meditates day and night.

  55. Now meditation for us is, often we think of,

  56. as emptying our minds and maybe sitting cross-legged with your fingers together

  57. and meditation of some sort.

  58. But that's not what meditation is in the Bible.

  59. It's not emptying our minds.

  60. It's actually filling our minds with God's word.

  61. We're to read it.

  62. We're to take it in.

  63. We're to think about it.

  64. We're to reflect on it.

  65. We're to talk about it to one another

  66. and to apply it in our lives.

  67. And there's good reason for doing this.

  68. Because the person who takes God's word seriously,

  69. look at verse 3,

  70. We're told they are like a tree planted by streams of water

  71. which yields its fruit in season

  72. whose leaf does not wither.

  73. Whatever they do, prosper.

  74. I'm not much of a horticulturalist.

  75. You'll have to talk to Alex about all that sort of thing.

  76. But we do have two apple trees in our garden.

  77. And at this time of year, you see the changes from what were just sticks.

  78. There are now leaves.

  79. And the leaves, well the leaves don't change to blossom,

  80. but blossom comes along in the plant.

  81. And after that, you've got these tiny little apples.

  82. But the point is very simple.

  83. It can't produce fruit unless it's cared for,

  84. unless it's watered and fed with nutrients.

  85. And so it gives us a wonderful picture

  86. of how God's word, when it's listened to,

  87. when we take it on board,

  88. when we meditate upon it,

  89. it actually brings fruitfulness to our life.

  90. Taking in God's word is like this tree

  91. planted by a stream of water

  92. which yields fruit in season.

  93. There is something healthy and vibrant about this life

  94. that is engaged with God's word.

  95. It is attractive and beautiful.

  96. It is a good way.

  97. It is the righteous way.

  98. So in verses 1 to 3,

  99. we have the way of the righteous.

  100. Which is marked by listening to the word.

  101. And then we have the way of the wicked.

  102. In verses 4 to 5,

  103. which is marked by listening to the world.

  104. Go back to verse 1.

  105. It tells us there that the righteous person

  106. does not walk in the counsel of the wicked

  107. or stand in the way of sinners

  108. or sit in the seat of mockers.

  109. Well, the wicked person does walk in the counsel of the wicked.

  110. They do stand in the way of sinners

  111. and they do sit in the seat of mockers.

  112. So rather than listening to the word,

  113. they're spending their time listening to the world.

  114. And look at the contrast of this life.

  115. Verse 4.

  116. Verse 4 breaks in with this.

  117. It says,

  118. Not so the wicked.

  119. It's making a comparison

  120. with what it says in verse 3.

  121. The wicked are not like

  122. the person in verse 3

  123. who is a tree planted by streams of water

  124. which yield as fruit in season.

  125. Instead,

  126. verse 4,

  127. the wicked are like chaff.

  128. Not like a tree,

  129. but like chaff.

  130. Now, chaff is that waste

  131. which you get around the corn

  132. or the grain.

  133. It's of no value whatsoever.

  134. The husk, we might call it.

  135. It's useless.

  136. If you were to go shopping in Tesco's tomorrow morning

  137. for your favourite cereal,

  138. you're not going to find anything

  139. called chaffabix

  140. or chafflakes

  141. or chaffos.

  142. Why?

  143. Because chaff is a waste.

  144. It produces nothing

  145. of any value whatsoever.

  146. It's to be thrown out.

  147. In fact, I'm told

  148. that it's so useless

  149. you can't even start a fire with it.

  150. And so it gives us a terrible picture

  151. or image

  152. of someone who listens to the world

  153. rather than the word.

  154. It's a life

  155. that is fruitless

  156. and all that they produce in the end

  157. is worthless.

  158. It's of no value whatsoever.

  159. Verse 5,

  160. Therefore,

  161. the wicked

  162. will not stand

  163. in the judgment

  164. and sinners

  165. in the assembly

  166. of the righteous.

  167. the way of the wicked

  168. is ultimately

  169. destined

  170. to fail.

  171. It offers nothing

  172. in the end.

  173. So this psalm

  174. makes this contrast

  175. between,

  176. on the one hand,

  177. we've got the way of the righteous

  178. listening to the word

  179. and the way of the wicked

  180. who listen to the world.

  181. It's very important

  182. what we listen to.

  183. I'm sure

  184. you've all heard

  185. the health

  186. gurus say

  187. we are

  188. what we eat.

  189. And to some extent

  190. that's true.

  191. Our health

  192. depends on what we take

  193. into our bodies.

  194. So if we were to eat

  195. McDonald's

  196. 24-7

  197. we're going to end up

  198. in the operating theater

  199. needing a new heart,

  200. aren't we?

  201. It's not good for you.

  202. On the other hand,

  203. if we eat

  204. the right kind of food,

  205. as much as we don't like

  206. our greens,

  207. we need to eat them

  208. because

  209. it will produce

  210. a vibrant

  211. long life.

  212. Well,

  213. Psalm 1

  214. is saying to us

  215. we are

  216. what we listen to.

  217. If we listen to the word,

  218. well that's a healthy diet.

  219. It's going to help us

  220. live rightly

  221. in God's world.

  222. Have a look at Psalm 19.

  223. We sang about this

  224. a little bit earlier on.

  225. Psalm 19.

  226. This is a psalm

  227. that speaks about

  228. the greatness

  229. of God's word.

  230. Let's pick it up

  231. in verse 7

  232. of Psalm 19.

  233. Psalm 19.

  234. Psalm 19.

  235. The law of the Lord

  236. is perfect,

  237. reviving the soul.

  238. The statutes of the Lord

  239. are trustworthy,

  240. making wise the simple.

  241. Verse 10.

  242. They are more precious

  243. than gold,

  244. than much pure gold.

  245. They are sweeter than honey,

  246. than honey from the cone.

  247. By them

  248. is your servant warned.

  249. In keeping them

  250. there is great

  251. reward.

  252. So God's word

  253. is good for us.

  254. It's healthy.

  255. On the other hand,

  256. if we listen to the world,

  257. it's going to be

  258. an unhealthy diet.

  259. It's going to pull us

  260. away from God.

  261. It's going to leave us

  262. without meaning

  263. and without purpose.

  264. Look back at

  265. Psalm chapter 1,

    Psalms 1:1

  266. verse 1.

  267. I wonder if you can

  268. notice the progression

  269. that there is

  270. in verse 1.

  271. The person who

  272. spends their time

  273. listening to the world

  274. rather than the word.

  275. They start off

  276. by walking

  277. in the counsel

  278. of the wicked.

  279. And then they stop,

  280. don't they?

  281. And they stand

  282. in the way of sinners.

  283. And then they

  284. progress further.

  285. They actually

  286. sit down

  287. in the seat

  288. of mockers.

  289. It's a very

  290. dangerous progression,

  291. isn't it?

  292. When we listen

  293. to the world,

  294. we start off

  295. by thinking

  296. like them.

  297. And then we

  298. kind of make

  299. a progression

  300. from thinking

  301. like them

  302. to actually

  303. behaving like them.

  304. and then we

  305. end up

  306. belonging like them.

  307. You see,

  308. it's most important

  309. to think through

  310. what or who

  311. we are listening

  312. to.

  313. And as we

  314. live in this

  315. world,

  316. there are going

  317. to be many

  318. voices that are

  319. competing for

  320. our attention

  321. all the time.

  322. The atheists

  323. will be saying

  324. something like this.

  325. There's probably

  326. no God,

  327. so go and

  328. enjoy your life.

  329. the pluralists

  330. will say,

  331. uh-uh,

  332. they're wrong.

  333. There are

  334. actually many

  335. gods,

  336. so you choose

  337. who you want

  338. to listen to.

  339. And then there's

  340. the secularists,

  341. and I think

  342. that's more

  343. what our society

  344. is like,

  345. and they will

  346. say,

  347. you're God.

  348. You yourself

  349. are God.

  350. You listen

  351. to yourself.

  352. You know

  353. better than

  354. anybody else

  355. what's good

  356. for you.

  357. And these

  358. are the voices

  359. that come

  360. through the

  361. media,

  362. they come

  363. through our

  364. friends,

  365. they come

  366. through the

  367. books we

  368. read,

  369. and the

  370. underlying

  371. theme is

  372. this.

  373. Whatever you

  374. do,

  375. don't listen

  376. to God.

  377. Listen to

  378. anything else,

  379. but don't

  380. listen to

  381. God.

  382. And it

  383. seems that

  384. very little

  385. has changed

  386. from the

  387. Garden of

  388. Eden,

  389. when the

  390. devil came

  391. along and

  392. spoke to

  393. Adam and

  394. Eve,

  395. and said

  396. this,

  397. did God

  398. really say

  399. the first

  400. point of

  401. attack was

  402. to tackle

  403. what God

  404. said.

  405. Don't

  406. believe what

  407. God said.

  408. Yeah,

  409. I know

  410. he made

  411. the world

  412. and he

  413. made you

  414. and he's

  415. in charge

  416. and he's

  417. the boss,

  418. but did

  419. he really

  420. say that?

  421. Through

  422. Psalm 1,

  423. God's

  424. voice is

  425. crystal

  426. clear.

  427. word.

  428. It's

  429. saying do

  430. not listen

  431. to the

  432. world,

  433. but listen

  434. to the

  435. word.

  436. The word

  437. that spoke

  438. creation into

  439. existence,

  440. the word

  441. that made

  442. you and

  443. sustains you,

  444. the word

  445. that became

  446. flesh and

  447. lived among

  448. us in the

  449. person of

  450. Jesus Christ.

  451. And remember

  452. it is Jesus

  453. who said,

  454. I tell you

  455. the truth,

  456. whoever hears

  457. my word

  458. and believes

  459. him who

  460. sent me

  461. has eternal

  462. life and

  463. will not

  464. be condemned.

  465. He is

  466. crossed over

  467. from death

  468. to life.

  469. So it's

  470. an encouragement

  471. for us to

  472. listen to the

  473. word that

  474. can save

  475. you, the

  476. word that

  477. can change

  478. you and

  479. transform you

  480. into the

  481. kind of

  482. people that

  483. God created

  484. us to be.

  485. we are

  486. simply what

  487. we listen

  488. to.

  489. We become

  490. what words

  491. we take

  492. in.

  493. Now this

  494. all challenges

  495. us to think

  496. through which

  497. way am I,

  498. are we going

  499. to live?

  500. It presents

  501. us with two

  502. ways to live.

  503. And the

  504. question we

  505. need to ask

  506. individually is

  507. which way am

  508. I going to

  509. live?

  510. Now I'm

  511. sure we all

  512. know which

  513. way we do

  514. want to live.

  515. And we all

  516. want to say

  517. yep, I want

  518. to be the

  519. person of

  520. verses 1 to

  521. 3.

  522. That's me.

  523. Well the

  524. reality is,

  525. so often we

  526. are not like

  527. the person in

  528. verse 1.

  529. We do walk,

  530. don't we,

  531. in the

  532. counsel of

  533. the wicked.

  534. We all

  535. stop and

  536. stand in

  537. the way of

  538. sinners.

  539. sinners.

  540. And we

  541. all sit at

  542. the seat of

  543. mockers.

  544. Now this

  545. doesn't mean

  546. to say that

  547. we have to

  548. kind of

  549. somehow become

  550. like little

  551. monks living

  552. away off on

  553. some little

  554. island somewhere

  555. and not

  556. listen or hear

  557. to anybody

  558. else.

  559. Now we are

  560. in the world,

  561. we are with

  562. people all

  563. the time,

  564. but sometimes

  565. we become

  566. more a part

  567. of the world

  568. than we

  569. ought to.

  570. We join

  571. in with

  572. other people

  573. where we

  574. ought not

  575. to join

  576. in.

  577. We agree

  578. with what

  579. they say

  580. rather than

  581. challenge what

  582. they say.

  583. And so

  584. often we

  585. are not

  586. like the

  587. person of

  588. verse 2.

  589. We don't

  590. delight in

  591. the law of

  592. the Lord.

  593. It's an

  594. absolute drudgery

  595. if we're honest

  596. to sit down

  597. and read our

  598. Bible.

  599. It comes to

  600. reading our

  601. Bible and

  602. we're not

  603. jumping up and

  604. down all

  605. excited and

  606. saying,

  607. oh I can't

  608. wait to

  609. read it.

  610. It's like,

  611. gosh do I

  612. have to

  613. read it?

  614. And as

  615. far as

  616. meditating on

  617. it day and

  618. night,

  619. my goodness

  620. me it's

  621. hard enough

  622. to open my

  623. Bible once a

  624. week,

  625. let alone try

  626. and do it

  627. day and

  628. night.

  629. And I'm

  630. sure if we

  631. were to do

  632. a little

  633. survey,

  634. myself included,

  635. we would be

  636. all extremely

  637. embarrassed to

  638. say how many

  639. times we

  640. actually did

  641. open up our

  642. Bibles this

  643. week.

  644. So where

  645. does it leave

  646. us?

  647. Although we

  648. like the way

  649. of the

  650. righteous,

  651. we like to

  652. put ourselves

  653. in verses

  654. 1 to 3,

  655. the reality

  656. is we

  657. are very

  658. often like

  659. verses 4

  660. and 5.

  661. And the

  662. consequences

  663. are serious.

  664. Look at

  665. verse 6.

  666. The Lord

  667. watches over

  668. the way

  669. of the

  670. righteous,

  671. but the

  672. way of the

  673. wicked will

  674. perish.

  675. You see,

  676. our problem

  677. is,

  678. and the

  679. problem that

  680. this psalm

  681. confronts,

  682. it's like

  683. there's a

  684. sting in the

  685. tail.

  686. it all

  687. starts off

  688. very exciting

  689. and yes,

  690. I like this,

  691. but by the

  692. time we get

  693. to the end

  694. of it,

  695. it paints a

  696. picture of

  697. what we're

  698. really like.

  699. And the

  700. terrible conclusion

  701. is we're not

  702. like the way

  703. of the

  704. righteous,

  705. we're like

  706. the way

  707. of the

  708. wicked.

  709. We slip up

  710. far too

  711. often,

  712. and we

  713. fail too

  714. much.

  715. So is

  716. there any

  717. of us

  718. who can

  719. actually live

  720. the right

  721. way?

  722. Well,

  723. the answer

  724. is none

  725. of us can

  726. live the

  727. right way.

  728. But there

  729. is another

  730. way.

  731. There is

  732. one who

  733. has lived

  734. the right

  735. way.

  736. And more

  737. importantly,

  738. and the

  739. exciting and

  740. the good

  741. news is,

  742. he has

  743. lived the

  744. right way

  745. for us.

  746. He lived

  747. a way that

  748. we could

  749. never live.

  750. Do you

  751. remember the

  752. verse that we

  753. started with

  754. this morning?

  755. It came in

  756. 2 Timothy 3

  757. 15.

  758. I'll read it

  759. to you.

  760. It says,

  761. the scriptures

  762. are able to

  763. make you

  764. wise for

  765. salvation

  766. through faith

  767. in Jesus

  768. Christ.

  769. It's telling

  770. us that the

  771. scriptures,

  772. the Bible,

  773. the Psalms,

  774. included,

  775. tell us

  776. about Jesus

  777. and our

  778. salvation

  779. and all

  780. about Jesus

  781. who lived

  782. the perfect

  783. way for

  784. us.

  785. This is what

  786. this psalm is

  787. pointing us

  788. to.

  789. It's ultimately

  790. pointing us

  791. to Jesus

  792. who lived

  793. the way

  794. that we

  795. could never

  796. live.

  797. Where we

  798. disobey,

  799. he is

  800. obeyed.

  801. He not

  802. only read

  803. God's word,

  804. he obeyed

  805. God's word

  806. in all its

  807. fullness.

  808. Where we

  809. fail,

  810. he was

  811. faithful.

  812. Where we

  813. sin,

  814. he was

  815. without

  816. sin.

  817. So Jesus

  818. came,

  819. the word

  820. became flesh,

  821. he lived

  822. his life

  823. on earth,

  824. he lived

  825. the perfect

  826. life for

  827. us.

  828. But more

  829. than that,

  830. Jesus not

  831. only lived

  832. our life,

  833. he died

  834. our death.

  835. He was

  836. treated as

  837. wicked for

  838. us,

  839. so that

  840. we might

  841. be treated

  842. righteous

  843. like him.

  844. Let me

  845. read that

  846. again to

  847. let it

  848. sink down

  849. as we

  850. reflect on

  851. Psalm 1.

  852. He was

  853. treated as

  854. wicked for

  855. us so

  856. that we

  857. might be

  858. treated

  859. righteous like

  860. him.

  861. He died

  862. for us so

  863. that we

  864. might not

  865. perish,

  866. but that we

  867. might prosper,

  868. that we

  869. might have

  870. eternal life.

  871. so through

  872. our faith

  873. in Jesus

  874. who lived

  875. the perfect

  876. way,

  877. we can

  878. have salvation.

  879. And then

  880. we can read

  881. verse 5,

  882. in the light

  883. of all that

  884. Christ has

  885. done and

  886. know that

  887. the wicked,

  888. people like

  889. me,

  890. will be able

  891. to stand

  892. in the

  893. judgment

  894. because Christ

  895. has taken

  896. the judgment

  897. for me.

  898. A sinner

  899. like me

  900. will be

  901. in the

  902. assembly

  903. of the

  904. righteous

  905. because I

  906. am no

  907. longer

  908. seen with

  909. sin,

  910. but I

  911. am seen

  912. with the

  913. righteousness

  914. of Christ.

  915. All of

  916. this comes

  917. as we

  918. think upon

  919. God's

  920. word and

  921. understand

  922. his amazing

  923. salvation

  924. for us.

  925. The way

  926. of Christ,

  927. he lived

  928. the life

  929. that we

  930. could never

  931. live.

  932. So where

  933. do we go

  934. from here?

  935. Well,

  936. it might

  937. be stating

  938. the obvious

  939. to say

  940. that Psalm

  941. 1 is

  942. Psalm 1.

  943. That it's

  944. the very

  945. first

  946. psalm.

  947. Well,

  948. there's a

  949. reason I

  950. think that

  951. Psalm 1

  952. is Psalm

  953. 1 and

  954. not Psalm

  955. 15 or

  956. 38 or

  957. something else.

  958. Because Psalm

  959. 1 is all

  960. about the

  961. importance of

  962. listening to

  963. God's word.

  964. It's an

  965. introduction.

  966. Psalm 1 is

  967. an introduction

  968. to the

  969. rest of

  970. the

  971. psalms.

  972. In other

  973. words,

  974. it's telling

  975. us,

  976. don't stop

  977. at Psalm

  978. 1,

  979. but now

  980. go and

  981. read them

  982. all.

  983. Get into

  984. God's

  985. words.

  986. Because it

  987. tells us

  988. about salvation.

  989. It tells us

  990. about Christ.

  991. It tells us

  992. about the

  993. way we

  994. should live.

  995. In fact,

  996. the application

  997. is wider.

  998. It's saying,

  999. read all

  1000. of Scripture.

  1001. Because if

  1002. we do,

  1003. then we

  1004. will be

  1005. like

  1006. verse 3,

  1007. that tree

  1008. planted by

  1009. streams of

  1010. water which

  1011. yields its

  1012. fruit in

  1013. season.

  1014. Now I

  1015. know,

  1016. and I

  1017. want us

  1018. to be

  1019. real about

  1020. all of

  1021. this,

  1022. that we

  1023. do find

  1024. reading the

  1025. Bible hard,

  1026. don't we?

  1027. We all

  1028. find it

  1029. difficult.

  1030. It doesn't

  1031. come easy

  1032. to us.

  1033. So I

  1034. want to

  1035. encourage us

  1036. in two

  1037. ways how

  1038. we can

  1039. read the

  1040. Bible.

  1041. Just two

  1042. ways in

  1043. which we

  1044. can read

  1045. the Bible.

  1046. The first

  1047. is,

  1048. read the

  1049. Bible on

  1050. your own.

  1051. Nothing

  1052. difficult,

  1053. read it

  1054. on your

  1055. own.

  1056. Well,

  1057. you say

  1058. to me,

  1059. but I

  1060. don't have

  1061. time to

  1062. read my

  1063. Bible,

  1064. I'm just

  1065. too busy.

  1066. By the

  1067. time I

  1068. get up

  1069. in the

  1070. morning,

  1071. I'm

  1072. having to

  1073. leave the

  1074. house at

  1075. seven o'clock

  1076. or half

  1077. seven,

  1078. I've got

  1079. to be

  1080. at work

  1081. at a

  1082. certain

  1083. time,

  1084. then I'm

  1085. leaving home

  1086. to rush

  1087. home for

  1088. dinner and

  1089. see the

  1090. kids,

  1091. and then I've

  1092. got to go

  1093. out somewhere

  1094. in the

  1095. evening.

  1096. I just

  1097. don't have

  1098. time to

  1099. sit it

  1100. in.

  1101. Well,

  1102. let me

  1103. read a

  1104. quote from

  1105. a well-known

  1106. preacher,

  1107. Martin Lloyd

  1108. Jones.

  1109. He was

  1110. actually a

  1111. physician,

  1112. a doctor as

  1113. well.

  1114. And this is

  1115. what the

  1116. quote says,

  1117. Martin Lloyd

  1118. Jones once

  1119. spoke with a

  1120. group of

  1121. medical students

  1122. who complained

  1123. that in the

  1124. midst of their

  1125. training and

  1126. the ferocious

  1127. work hours,

  1128. they really

  1129. didn't have

  1130. time to read

  1131. the Bible and

  1132. have their

  1133. devotions and

  1134. so on.

  1135. He

  1136. brittled and

  1137. said,

  1138. I am a

  1139. doctor.

  1140. I have been

  1141. where you

  1142. are.

  1143. You have

  1144. time for

  1145. what you

  1146. want to

  1147. do.

  1148. After a

  1149. long pause,

  1150. he said,

  1151. I make

  1152. only one

  1153. exception.

  1154. The mother

  1155. of preschool

  1156. age children

  1157. does not

  1158. have time

  1159. and emotional

  1160. resources.

  1161. I think

  1162. that's very

  1163. important for

  1164. us all to

  1165. listen to.

  1166. For all

  1167. the men,

  1168. and for

  1169. all the

  1170. rest of

  1171. us who

  1172. don't have

  1173. kids,

  1174. we can

  1175. make all

  1176. the excuses

  1177. in the

  1178. world.

  1179. But at

  1180. the end of

  1181. the day,

  1182. that's what

  1183. they are.

  1184. They're just

  1185. excuses.

  1186. We all have

  1187. time to watch

  1188. the footy on

  1189. telly.

  1190. We all have

  1191. time to look

  1192. at other

  1193. programs and

  1194. read magazines.

  1195. And I'm not

  1196. saying don't

  1197. do it.

  1198. It's good to

  1199. do it.

  1200. We've all

  1201. got time.

  1202. We've just

  1203. got to make

  1204. it our

  1205. priority.

  1206. And the

  1207. only ones

  1208. who have a

  1209. genuine

  1210. reason,

  1211. according to

  1212. Martin Lloyd

  1213. Jones,

  1214. and I

  1215. think it's

  1216. a good

  1217. one,

  1218. are mums.

  1219. Those with

  1220. little kids.

  1221. I know

  1222. Kirsty had to

  1223. look after

  1224. two little

  1225. kids.

  1226. And you

  1227. get to a

  1228. certain point

  1229. of the day

  1230. and it's

  1231. just whacked

  1232. out,

  1233. mentally,

  1234. emotionally

  1235. exhausted.

  1236. Can't even

  1237. sit and read

  1238. the Bible

  1239. and take it

  1240. in.

  1241. So if you're

  1242. a mum here

  1243. this morning

  1244. and you're

  1245. in that

  1246. situation,

  1247. you just

  1248. find it

  1249. really hard

  1250. and really

  1251. tough.

  1252. Don't beat

  1253. yourself up

  1254. about it

  1255. and get

  1256. all guilty

  1257. about it.

  1258. But if

  1259. you're a

  1260. husband of

  1261. that mum,

  1262. you've got a

  1263. responsibility

  1264. to make sure

  1265. that they

  1266. have time

  1267. to encourage

  1268. them,

  1269. maybe to

  1270. read it

  1271. with them,

  1272. to pray

  1273. for them,

  1274. to be that

  1275. support that

  1276. they need.

  1277. And mums,

  1278. it doesn't

  1279. last forever.

  1280. It is a

  1281. season,

  1282. but we

  1283. do need

  1284. to gather

  1285. around and

  1286. support and

  1287. to encourage.

  1288. So first

  1289. of all,

  1290. read the

  1291. Bible on

  1292. your own.

  1293. The second

  1294. way to read

  1295. the Bible

  1296. is to read

  1297. it with

  1298. someone else

  1299. because it

  1300. provides

  1301. accountability

  1302. and support.

  1303. The Christian

  1304. life is not

  1305. something we

  1306. live on our

  1307. own.

  1308. It's not

  1309. to be done

  1310. in isolation.

  1311. We're to do

  1312. it with the

  1313. care and

  1314. the help

  1315. and support

  1316. of one

  1317. another.

  1318. And it's

  1319. something that

  1320. we encourage

  1321. very often

  1322. from the

  1323. frontier

  1324. and informally

  1325. with each

  1326. other.

  1327. To take

  1328. somebody

  1329. who you

  1330. can sit

  1331. down with

  1332. and read

  1333. the Bible

  1334. with and

  1335. challenge them

  1336. about what

  1337. it says.

  1338. I read the

  1339. Bible with

  1340. different people

  1341. and if you're

  1342. stuck and you

  1343. have nobody

  1344. to read it

  1345. with and you

  1346. haven't got a

  1347. friend, I'll

  1348. be a friend.

  1349. I'll read the

  1350. Bible with you.

  1351. Very happy to

  1352. do that.

  1353. But one of

  1354. the things I

  1355. read recently

  1356. with someone,

  1357. this is what

  1358. it said.

  1359. And it's

  1360. why it's

  1361. good to

  1362. read it

  1363. with somebody

  1364. because they

  1365. ask you

  1366. things that

  1367. you would

  1368. never ask

  1369. for yourself.

  1370. We read

  1371. these verses.

  1372. People will

  1373. be lovers of

  1374. themselves,

  1375. lover of

  1376. money,

  1377. boastful,

  1378. proud,

  1379. abutiful,

  1380. disobedient to

  1381. their parents,

  1382. ungrateful,

  1383. unholy,

  1384. without love,

  1385. unforgiving,

  1386. slanderous,

  1387. without self-control,

  1388. brutal,

  1389. not lovers of

  1390. the good,

  1391. treacherous,

  1392. rash,

  1393. conceited,

  1394. lovers of pleasure

  1395. rather than

  1396. lovers of God,

  1397. having a form of

  1398. godliness but

  1399. denying its power,

  1400. have nothing to do

  1401. with them.

  1402. Now if I was

  1403. to read that

  1404. myself,

  1405. I'd say,

  1406. well that's

  1407. other people,

  1408. that's not me.

  1409. The person who I

  1410. was reading with

  1411. perched up and

  1412. says,

  1413. well Johnny,

  1414. which one are

  1415. you?

  1416. You see,

  1417. I would never

  1418. ask that question

  1419. of myself.

  1420. but with somebody

  1421. else,

  1422. we are challenging

  1423. each other over

  1424. God's word,

  1425. hearing what it

  1426. has to say,

  1427. being accountable

  1428. and being

  1429. supportive.

  1430. And if we do

  1431. miss a day where

  1432. we don't read the

  1433. Bible,

  1434. if we miss two

  1435. days,

  1436. if we miss a

  1437. week,

  1438. if we miss a

  1439. month,

  1440. we need people

  1441. who will gather

  1442. around us and

  1443. encourage us

  1444. and support us

  1445. and say,

  1446. I'll sit down

  1447. and I'll read it

  1448. with you

  1449. and I'll pray

  1450. with you

  1451. and encourage

  1452. you.

  1453. Now these two

  1454. ways,

  1455. reading the Bible

  1456. on your own

  1457. and reading it

  1458. with somebody

  1459. else,

  1460. I don't suggest

  1461. it's one or the

  1462. other.

  1463. I suggest you

  1464. do the two.

  1465. You read it on

  1466. your own,

  1467. but you also

  1468. read it with

  1469. someone else.

  1470. Verse 1 of

  1471. Psalm 1 says,

  1472. Bless us.

  1473. The satisfied,

  1474. content,

  1475. happy,

  1476. fulfilled person

  1477. will never be

  1478. striving or

  1479. looking for

  1480. anything more

  1481. because we

  1482. have everything.

  1483. For the person

  1484. who delights

  1485. in the laws

  1486. of the Lord,

  1487. who meditates

  1488. on a day and

  1489. night,

  1490. who will be

  1491. like a tree

  1492. plant by streams

  1493. of water,

  1494. which yields

  1495. its fruit

  1496. in season.

  1497. Let's be

  1498. encouraged

  1499. to be people

  1500. who listen

  1501. to the word

  1502. rather than

  1503. listening

  1504. to the world.

  1505. Let's pray

  1506. together.

  1507. Amen.

  1508. Father God,

  1509. thank you

  1510. that you

  1511. are

  1512. personal,

  1513. that you

  1514. relate to

  1515. us,

  1516. that you

  1517. speak to

  1518. us.

  1519. Change

  1520. our priorities

  1521. in our life,

  1522. change our

  1523. attitudes,

  1524. so that we

  1525. make listening

  1526. to you

  1527. the most

  1528. important thing

  1529. in our lives.

  1530. Help us to

  1531. listen to what

  1532. you are saying

  1533. to us about

  1534. yourself,

  1535. about what

  1536. you're like,

  1537. about what

  1538. we're like,

  1539. and most of

  1540. all,

  1541. what Jesus

  1542. is like,

  1543. who lived

  1544. the perfect

  1545. way for us,

  1546. who lived

  1547. the life

  1548. that we

  1549. could never

  1550. live,

  1551. who died

  1552. the death

  1553. for us,

  1554. so that we

  1555. would not

  1556. perish,

  1557. but that we

  1558. would prosper

  1559. and have

  1560. eternal life.

  1561. Help us all

  1562. to be practical

  1563. about this.

  1564. Give us

  1565. good and

  1566. inventive ways

  1567. of reading

  1568. your words

  1569. with one

  1570. another.

  1571. Help us to

  1572. support each

  1573. other and

  1574. ask each

  1575. other how

  1576. we're getting

  1577. on.

  1578. And if

  1579. somebody's

  1580. struggling,

  1581. Lord,

  1582. give us the

  1583. courage to

  1584. get alongside

  1585. them and

  1586. read with

  1587. them and

  1588. to help

  1589. them.

  1590. We pray

  1591. this in

  1592. Jesus'

  1593. name.

  1594. Amen.

  1595. Amen.

  1596. Amen.

  1597. Amen.

  1598. Amen.

  1599. Well,

  1600. we've got

  1601. a pal,

  1602. and I

  1603. think we've

  1604. sung it

  1605. before,

  1606. which reflects,

  1607. helps us to

  1608. think through

  1609. a little bit

  1610. about what

  1611. we've been

  1612. looking at,

  1613. speak on the

  1614. word as we

  1615. ąż

  1616. how

  1617. A
