  1. Psalm 57.

  2. Psalm 57 is on page 576.

  3. So when you've looked that up, then turn to Psalm 142.

  4. Because that's going to be the other one.

  5. Psalm 57.

  6. And then Psalm 142.

  7. All right?

  8. We all got there?

  9. Okay, let's read then Psalm 51.

  10. 57 starting at verse 1.

  11. Have mercy on me, O God, have mercy on me, for in you my soul takes refuge.

  12. I will take refuge in the shadow of your wings until the disaster has passed.

  13. I cry out to God most high, to God who fulfills his purpose for me.

  14. He sends from heaven and saves me, rebuking those who hotly pursue me.

  15. God sends his love and his faithfulness.

  16. I am in the midst of lions.

  17. I am in the midst of the earth.

  18. I am in the midst of the earth.

  19. I am in the midst of the earth.

  20. Men whose teeth are spears and arrows, whose tongues are sharp swords.

  21. Be exalted, O God, above the heavens.

  22. Let your glory be over all the earth.

  23. They spread the nets for my feet.

  24. I was bowed down in distress.

  25. They dug a pit in my path.

  26. But they had fallen into it themselves.

  27. My heart is steadfast, O God.

  28. My heart is steadfast.

  29. I will sing and make music.

  30. Awake, my soul.

  31. Awake, heart and lyre.

  32. I will awaken the dawn.

  33. I will pray to you, O Lord, among the nations.

  34. I will sing of you among the peoples.

  35. For great is your love reaching to the heavens.

  36. Your faithfulness reaches to the skies.

  37. Be exalted, O God, above the heavens.

  38. Let your glory be over all the earth.

  39. And then turn to Psalm 142.

  40. And Amy's going to read that for us.

  41. Psalm 142.

  42. I cry aloud to the Lord.

  43. I lift up my voice to the Lord for mercy.

  44. I pour out my complaint before him.

  45. Before him I tell my trouble.

  46. When my spirit goes faint within me,

  47. it is you who know my way.

  48. In the path where I walk,

  49. men have hidden a snare for me.

  50. Look to my right and see.

  51. No one is concerned for me.

  52. I have no refuge.

  53. No one cares for my life.

  54. I cry to you, O Lord.

  55. I say you are my refuge,

  56. my portion in the land of the living.

  57. Listen to my cry,

  58. for I am in desperate need.

  59. Rescue me from those who pursue me,

  60. for they are too strong for me.

  61. Set me free from my prison,

  62. that I may praise your name.

  63. Then the righteous will gather about me

  64. because of your goodness to me.

  65. As I say, over the summer,

  66. we're looking to do the plan.

  67. And we have two speakers today.

  68. And next week, Michael is going to be preaching.

  69. I'm going to pray for him,

  70. and for us,

  71. and then we'll be.

  72. Listen carefully.

  73. Father, thank you for your word to us.

  74. Thank you for the Psalms,

  75. for all that they teach us

  76. about you,

  77. the world in which we live,

  78. and about the struggles that we go through.

  79. And we pray that through this morning,

  80. we would have a bigger picture

  81. of the great God that you are,

  82. your faithfulness,

  83. and your love.

  84. We pray for Michael,

  85. help him to communicate well.

  86. And we pray that you would pour out your spirit

  87. upon him and upon us,

  88. that we may see you

  89. and understand you better,

  90. and that our lives will be changed

  91. as a result.

  92. We ask this in Jesus' name.

  93. Amen.

  94. It's nice to be back with you

  95. once again in Cargilline.

  96. And we're going to be looking,

  97. as I say,

  98. at these two Psalms this morning.

  99. The background of these two Psalms

  100. is this.

  101. If you look at the title of both of them,

  102. you'll have the idea of David being in a cave.

  103. The title of Psalm 57 is

  104. When He Fled from Saul into a Cave,

  105. and Psalm 142,

  106. the title of it,

  107. When He Was in the Cave.

  108. And we can identify the time

  109. when David was indeed

  110. hiding from Saul in a cave.

  111. David left Gath,

  112. we read in 1 Samuel 21, 2 and verse 1.

  113. He left Gath and escaped to the cave

  114. of Adelam.

  115. And then in 1 Samuel 24,

  116. and verse 2,

  117. we read that Saul took 3,000 chosen men

  118. to look for David.

  119. And we read that a cave was there.

  120. And Saul went in to relieve himself,

  121. and David and his men

  122. were far back in the cave.

  123. And it's out of these experiences

  124. that David writes these particular Psalms.

  125. He's not enjoying a package holiday.

  126. He's not at a tourist spot,

  127. which he has booked over the internet.

  128. He's in one particular place,

  129. in a public toilet,

  130. hiding from Saul.

  131. He's in hiding.

  132. His life is literally on the line.

  133. Death stares him in the face.

  134. And he writes down his experiences

  135. in the words of these Psalms.

  136. And it gives us an idea

  137. of what life was like,

  138. an insight into what life was like

  139. on the run.

  140. Life in a cave,

  141. which he refers to

  142. as a prison.

  143. I'm not going to look at these Psalms

  144. verse by verse,

  145. but I want us to have an overview,

  146. as it were.

  147. I want to think that we might learn

  148. something of David's experience,

  149. that we might also learn for ourselves,

  150. how we can be helped

  151. in times of difficulty.

  152. But also I trust these Psalms

  153. will enable us to look to Christ,

  154. who entered into time for us

  155. and knew what it was himself

  156. to suffer similar privations.

  157. Now we notice as far as

  158. David's circumstances were concerned

  159. that there was

  160. a physical assault

  161. of his life.

  162. There were physical repercussions

  163. because he was being chased

  164. by Saul and his men.

  165. If you look at Psalm 57 and verse 6,

  166. he says,

  167. they spread a net for my feet.

  168. And he goes on to say,

  169. they dug a pit in my path.

  170. Psalm 142 in the latter part

  171. of verse 2 says,

  172. in the path where I walked,

  173. men have hidden a snare for me.

  174. And he goes on to say in verse 6,

  175. listen to my cry,

  176. for I am in desperate need.

  177. Rescue me from those who pursue me,

  178. for they are too strong for me.

  179. Set me free from my prison.

  180. David can understand something

  181. of what he is going through

  182. even as you read these.

  183. Many of you have been involved

  184. themselves with hunting.

  185. You know that there is

  186. the stalking of the prey.

  187. There's the looking for the creature

  188. that is at the end of your sights.

  189. And that's what David is.

  190. He's at the end of Saul's sights.

  191. He's at that position

  192. where he's soon to be taken.

  193. He's soon to be held captive

  194. or even worse,

  195. put to death.

  196. If you look at the 1 Samuel,

  197. you discover that 3,000

  198. of Saul's chosen men

  199. have been sent out

  200. to look for David.

  201. His elite,

  202. the elite from Saul's army,

  203. his commandos,

  204. if you like,

  205. his SAS.

  206. President Obama

  207. and other leaders of the war

  208. in Afghanistan

  209. have ordered a surge.

  210. The desire is

  211. to hunt down the Taliban

  212. and to destroy their capabilities.

  213. And something like that

  214. is happening here.

  215. Saul has urged a surge.

  216. And David

  217. is the prey.

  218. He wants to bring

  219. his influence

  220. to naught.

  221. Remember,

  222. people have said

  223. Saul has killed

  224. his thousands

  225. but David is

  226. tens of thousands

  227. after David

  228. had killed

  229. Goliath.

  230. And now

  231. Saul is at him,

  232. snapping at his heels.

  233. And David can feel

  234. their breath

  235. on his back.

  236. The nets are there

  237. to trap him.

  238. He's been hunted

  239. like a wild animal.

  240. And it's obviously

  241. physically draining.

  242. His cave,

  243. he tells us,

  244. has become

  245. a prison.

  246. There's physical

  247. discomfort

  248. of life

  249. on the run.

  250. Those are

  251. David's circumstances.

  252. This physical

  253. assault

  254. upon his

  255. very life.

  256. But it doesn't

  257. stop there.

  258. It's not just

  259. that he's being

  260. chased

  261. and he's indifferent

  262. to what is

  263. happening to him.

  264. There's also

  265. the mental

  266. pressure

  267. and that's

  268. very much

  269. part of his

  270. experience

  271. at this time.

  272. Psalm 57

  273. and verse 6

  274. I was

  275. bowed down

  276. in distress.

  277. Of course

  278. he was.

  279. Verse 2

  280. of Psalm

  281. 142

  282. I pour out

  283. my complaint

  284. before him.

  285. Before him

  286. I tell

  287. my trouble.

  288. When my

  289. spirit,

  290. he says,

  291. grows faint

  292. within me.

  293. Verse 3

  294. of Psalm

  295. 142

  296. and verse 4

  297. of that

  298. fame salt.

  299. Look to my

  300. right and see

  301. no one is

  302. concerned for me.

  303. I have no

  304. refuge.

  305. No one cares

  306. for my life.

  307. Do you get

  308. the picture?

  309. This mental

  310. assault.

  311. It's not just

  312. physical hurt.

  313. He's feeling

  314. it inside.

  315. Mentally,

  316. he's in

  317. turmoil.

  318. He feels

  319. alone.

  320. And if you

  321. delve into

  322. further into

  323. David's

  324. background at

  325. this time,

  326. you discover

  327. some of the

  328. reasons why

  329. he was having

  330. this mental

  331. pressure.

  332. It wasn't

  333. just the

  334. physical

  335. assault of

  336. Saul and

  337. his men,

  338. but also

  339. he was

  340. hearing news

  341. from time

  342. to time

  343. of what

  344. was going

  345. on out

  346. there away

  347. from the

  348. cave.

  349. In 1

  350. Samuel 22

  351. and verse 6,

  352. he discovered

  353. that Saul

  354. had put to

  355. death 85

  356. of the

  357. Lord's

  358. priests.

  359. Not just

  360. the priests,

  361. but also

  362. their wives

  363. and their

  364. children were

  365. put to

  366. death.

  367. Because Saul

  368. believed that

  369. they had

  370. sided with

  371. David.

  372. David had

  373. turned up

  374. and he'd

  375. been handed

  376. bread.

  377. He'd been

  378. given the

  379. sword of

  380. Goliath.

  381. Therefore,

  382. the priests

  383. are in

  384. league with

  385. David and

  386. Saul has

  387. them all

  388. put to

  389. death.

  390. And a

  391. man by

  392. the name

  393. of Abiathar

  394. escapes and

  395. tells David

  396. what has

  397. happened.

  398. And this

  399. is what

  400. he says

  401. in 1

  402. Samuel 22

  403. and verse

  404. 22.

  405. I am

  406. responsible

  407. for the

  408. death of

  409. your father's

  410. whole family.

  411. He's

  412. weighed down.

  413. You see

  414. the mental

  415. pressure.

  416. He may

  417. not be

  418. responsible,

  419. but he

  420. feels he's

  421. responsible for

  422. the death of

  423. all these

  424. priests and

  425. their family.

  426. So there's a

  427. physical assault,

  428. there's a

  429. mental pressure.

  430. death of

  431. God.

  432. But then

  433. there's

  434. something else

  435. as we

  436. consider his

  437. circumstances.

  438. There was a

  439. spiritual battle

  440. going on,

  441. wasn't there?

  442. A battle is

  443. going on

  444. between Saul,

  445. who at this

  446. time has been

  447. rejected as

  448. king because

  449. he disobeyed

  450. the Lord's

  451. command,

  452. and David

  453. who has been

  454. anointed in

  455. his place.

  456. In 1

  457. Samuel 15

  458. and verse

  459. 26,

  460. Samuel says

  461. to Saul,

  462. you have

  463. rejected the

  464. word of the

  465. Lord, and

  466. the Lord has

  467. rejected you

  468. as king over

  469. Israel.

  470. And in

  471. verse 35 of

  472. 1 Samuel

  473. 15, it

  474. says, the

  475. Lord was

  476. grieved that

  477. he had made

  478. him king,

  479. that is Saul,

  480. over Israel.

  481. And then we

  482. go on to

  483. read in

  484. 16, 14 of

  485. 1 Samuel,

  486. that the

  487. spirit of

  488. the Lord

  489. had departed

  490. from Saul,

  491. and an

  492. evil spirit

  493. from the

  494. Lord tormented

  495. him.

  496. So Saul

  497. had been

  498. utterly

  499. rejected.

  500. Saul had

  501. been put

  502. to one

  503. side.

  504. God

  505. has said,

  506. no more

  507. will you

  508. reign over

  509. my people.

  510. He had

  511. been rejected,

  512. cast out,

  513. if you like,

  514. from God's

  515. presence.

  516. Saul.

  517. And we

  518. read in

  519. that account

  520. that Samuel

  521. no longer

  522. met with

  523. Saul.

  524. That showed

  525. that God

  526. was not

  527. going to

  528. talk to

  529. him anymore,

  530. because he

  531. rejected the

  532. word of the

  533. Lord.

  534. And you

  535. remember,

  536. in his

  537. place,

  538. David had

  539. been anointed.

  540. 1 Samuel 16

  541. and verse 13,

  542. so Samuel

  543. took the

  544. horn of

  545. oil and

  546. anointed

  547. David in

  548. the presence

  549. of his

  550. brothers.

  551. And from

  552. that day

  553. on the

  554. Spirit of

  555. the Lord

  556. came upon

  557. David in

  558. power.

  559. So here

  560. is the

  561. man.

  562. Saul,

  563. the

  564. spirit

  565. departed,

  566. but David,

  567. the spirit

  568. had been

  569. given,

  570. and in

  571. power he

  572. goes out

  573. to do the

  574. Lord's

  575. business.

  576. So what's

  577. happening here?

  578. it's not

  579. just a

  580. physical

  581. thought upon

  582. his body.

  583. It's not

  584. just that he's

  585. suffering mental

  586. pressure.

  587. There's this

  588. spiritual battle

  589. going on

  590. between the

  591. forces of

  592. evil and

  593. the forces

  594. of God.

  595. And the

  596. psalmist

  597. David brings

  598. it out.

  599. In verse

  600. 4 of

  601. Psalm 57,

  602. he says,

  603. I'm in the

  604. midst of

  605. lions.

  606. I lie

  607. among

  608. ravenous

  609. beasts,

  610. men whose

  611. teeth are

  612. spears and

  613. arrows,

  614. whose tongues

  615. are sharp

  616. swords.

  617. The imagery

  618. is powerful.

  619. Spurgeon

  620. commenting on

  621. this particular

  622. verse says,

  623. the teeth

  624. of these

  625. men are

  626. canine,

  627. leonine,

  628. wolfish,

  629. devilish,

  630. and they

  631. are.

  632. And their

  633. tongues are

  634. sharp swords,

  635. no weapon

  636. is so

  637. terrible as

  638. a tongue

  639. sharpened on

  640. the devil's

  641. grindstone.

  642. And this

  643. was the

  644. case,

  645. this spiritual

  646. battle,

  647. the rejected

  648. Saul and

  649. the anointed

  650. David.

  651. Did David

  652. deserve the

  653. treatment he

  654. was going

  655. through?

  656. What had he

  657. done wrong?

  658. Hadn't he

  659. served Saul?

  660. Hadn't he

  661. killed his

  662. enemies?

  663. Hadn't he

  664. sung to him

  665. sweet songs

  666. when he was

  667. in the depths

  668. of despair?

  669. Even when

  670. he had an

  671. opportunity to

  672. kill Saul,

  673. he had held

  674. back.

  675. He was the

  676. innocent party

  677. pursued by

  678. the guilty.

  679. This was

  680. David,

  681. the anointed

  682. of God,

  683. the man

  684. from the

  685. tribe of

  686. Judah,

  687. the one

  688. that would

  689. be the

  690. ancestor of

  691. the man

  692. Christ Jesus

  693. according to

  694. the flesh,

  695. the one

  696. who would

  697. come into

  698. the world

  699. as king

  700. of kings

  701. and lord

  702. of lords

  703. and all

  704. the principalities

  705. and powers

  706. are at work

  707. to destroy

  708. David.

  709. It is

  710. a spiritual

  711. attack.

  712. So as we

  713. see David's

  714. circumstances,

  715. we see

  716. the physical,

  717. we see the

  718. mental,

  719. and we see

  720. the spiritual.

  721. And they're

  722. all intermingled,

  723. which is

  724. often the

  725. case.

  726. Isn't it

  727. true in our

  728. own experience?

  729. When we

  730. suffer physically,

  731. it affects

  732. us mentally,

  733. and we

  734. find ourselves

  735. at times

  736. in a

  737. spiritual

  738. battle.

  739. Psalm 57

  740. and Psalm

  741. 142

  742. are the

  743. experiences

  744. of a real

  745. person

  746. who is

  747. going

  748. through

  749. the

  750. mill.

  751. And we

  752. can

  753. identify

  754. with him.

  755. We might

  756. say with

  757. him,

  758. Psalm 142

  759. in verse 4

  760. says,

  761. look to my

  762. right and

  763. see,

  764. no one is

  765. concerned for

  766. me,

  767. I have no

  768. refuge,

  769. no one

  770. cares for

  771. my life.

  772. We may

  773. feel like

  774. that,

  775. but the

  776. truth of

  777. the matter

  778. is that

  779. we do

  780. have one

  781. who knows

  782. and who

  783. does

  784. understand.

  785. One

  786. who

  787. identified

  788. with us,

  789. who

  790. suffered

  791. physically,

  792. who

  793. suffered

  794. mental

  795. turmoil,

  796. who fought

  797. a spiritual

  798. battle against

  799. the principalities

  800. and powers.

  801. And there

  802. is a

  803. parallel here

  804. surely

  805. with David's

  806. life.

  807. David the

  808. anointed

  809. of the

  810. Lord,

  811. David's

  812. son,

  813. the Lord

  814. Jesus Christ

  815. who was

  816. also

  817. David's

  818. Lord.

  819. And people

  820. spread a

  821. net for

  822. him.

  823. And as

  824. David

  825. suffered

  826. all these

  827. torments,

  828. when the

  829. Spirit of the

  830. Lord came

  831. upon him,

  832. so our

  833. Lord and

  834. Saviour,

  835. when the

  836. Spirit came

  837. upon him,

  838. also suffered

  839. those same

  840. torments.

  841. Think of the

  842. Lord Jesus

  843. in his

  844. suffering

  845. physically,

  846. when he

  847. was here

  848. upon earth,

  849. perhaps not

  850. in a

  851. cave,

  852. but he

  853. says in

  854. Matthew 8

  855. and verse

  856. 20,

  857. the foxes

  858. have holes

  859. and the

  860. birds of

  861. the air

  862. have nests,

  863. but the

  864. Son of

  865. Man has

  866. nowhere to

  867. lay his

  868. head.

  869. God

  870. and we

  871. begin,

  872. when he

  873. begins his

  874. ministry,

  875. he's out

  876. in the

  877. desert doing

  878. battle with

  879. Satan himself.

  880. And as we

  881. go through

  882. his life,

  883. we see the

  884. awful physical

  885. suffering of

  886. Calvary at

  887. the time of

  888. his crucifixion,

  889. when people

  890. plucked out

  891. his fear,

  892. when they

  893. beat him,

  894. when they

  895. scourged

  896. him,

  897. when they

  898. thrust that

  899. crown of

  900. thorns on

  901. his head,

  902. and then

  903. nailed him

  904. to the

  905. cross at

  906. Calvary,

  907. as Jesus

  908. knew what

  909. it was for

  910. men to

  911. spread their

  912. nets for

  913. him.

  914. The physical

  915. suffering of

  916. our Savior

  917. must never

  918. be underestimated.

  919. But think

  920. also of his

  921. mental suffering,

  922. as he goes

  923. to Calvary,

  924. he prays in

  925. Gethsemane.

  926. Matthew 26

  927. and verse 37

  928. says,

  929. he began to

  930. be sorrowful

  931. and troubled.

  932. My soul

  933. is overwhelmed

  934. with sorrow

  935. to the point

  936. of death.

  937. What is

  938. happening?

  939. Why this

  940. anguish?

  941. Well, he's

  942. being hunted

  943. down, isn't

  944. he?

  945. Just like

  946. David.

  947. Religious

  948. leaders have

  949. laid their

  950. nets.

  951. They're out

  952. for his

  953. blood.

  954. But much

  955. more than

  956. that, he

  957. was fulfilling

  958. the prophecies

  959. of the Old

  960. Testament

  961. concerning

  962. himself, that

  963. he was

  964. numbered with

  965. the transgressors.

  966. He was

  967. about to

  968. endure the

  969. wrath of

  970. God against

  971. sin.

  972. And as David

  973. cried out to

  974. the living

  975. God, so he

  976. cried out to

  977. the living

  978. God.

  979. God, as

  980. David was

  981. innocent as

  982. far as the

  983. crimes that

  984. Paul was

  985. accusing him

  986. of, the

  987. Lord Jesus

  988. was certainly

  989. innocent of

  990. the crimes

  991. that he was

  992. being accused

  993. of.

  994. And as the

  995. psalmist says,

  996. I cry out to

  997. God most

  998. high, to

  999. God who

  1000. fulfills his

  1001. purposes for

  1002. me.

  1003. Jesus

  1004. prayed that

  1005. in a way

  1006. that no one

  1007. else could

  1008. do.

  1009. He suffered

  1010. physically, he

  1011. suffered mentally,

  1012. and he

  1013. suffered

  1014. spiritually.

  1015. Father, if

  1016. you are

  1017. willing, take

  1018. this cup from

  1019. me, yet not

  1020. my will but

  1021. yours be

  1022. done.

  1023. There was

  1024. that spiritual

  1025. battle.

  1026. The greatest

  1027. battle of

  1028. all surely

  1029. took place

  1030. on that

  1031. hill far

  1032. away where

  1033. stood an

  1034. old rugged

  1035. cross.

  1036. And all

  1037. the powers

  1038. of darkness

  1039. were arrayed

  1040. against him,

  1041. and the

  1042. experience of

  1043. the psalmist

  1044. was his,

  1045. and more

  1046. so, no

  1047. one cares

  1048. for my

  1049. life.

  1050. And the

  1051. one who

  1052. died says,

  1053. my God,

  1054. my God,

  1055. why have

  1056. you forsaken

  1057. me?

  1058. Can we

  1059. understand

  1060. that?

  1061. No, we

  1062. can't.

  1063. But it

  1064. happened.

  1065. And as the

  1066. psalmist

  1067. overcame, so

  1068. he overcame.

  1069. As Saul, as

  1070. David had the

  1071. victory over

  1072. Saul and

  1073. established his

  1074. kingdom, so

  1075. the Lord Jesus

  1076. conquers the

  1077. principalities and

  1078. powers to set

  1079. up a kingdom

  1080. that will

  1081. know no end.

  1082. And you

  1083. and I, if

  1084. we are in

  1085. Christ this

  1086. morning, are

  1087. part of that

  1088. kingdom that

  1089. will know

  1090. no end.

  1091. We are

  1092. found in

  1093. Christ, and

  1094. we shall

  1095. overcome in

  1096. him.

  1097. But we

  1098. think of the

  1099. physical suffering,

  1100. the physical,

  1101. as far as

  1102. David was

  1103. concerned,

  1104. his condition

  1105. his place

  1106. there as

  1107. he suffers

  1108. physically, as

  1109. he suffers

  1110. mentally, as

  1111. he suffers

  1112. spiritually.

  1113. And think of

  1114. the parallels of

  1115. our Lord and

  1116. Saviour, Jesus

  1117. Christ, in his

  1118. life.

  1119. But think also

  1120. of David's

  1121. confidence.

  1122. Where is

  1123. David's confidence

  1124. through this time

  1125. of difficulty

  1126. deep and

  1127. trial?

  1128. Well, his

  1129. confidence is

  1130. in the

  1131. living God.

  1132. And is

  1133. brought out

  1134. again and

  1135. again in

  1136. these psalms.

  1137. Psalm 57

  1138. and verse

  1139. 1.

  1140. Have mercy

  1141. on me, O

  1142. God, have

  1143. mercy on me,

  1144. for in you my

  1145. soul takes

  1146. refuge.

  1147. I will take

  1148. refuge in the

  1149. shadow of your

  1150. wings until the

  1151. disaster is

  1152. past.

  1153. And then in

  1154. verse 3,

  1155. He sends

  1156. from heaven

  1157. and saves

  1158. me, rebuking

  1159. those who

  1160. hotly pursue

  1161. me.

  1162. God sends

  1163. his love

  1164. and his

  1165. faithfulness.

  1166. And then in

  1167. verse 7,

  1168. My heart

  1169. is steadfast,

  1170. O God,

  1171. my heart

  1172. is steadfast.

  1173. I will sing

  1174. and make

  1175. music.

  1176. And if you

  1177. go to Psalm

  1178. 142 and

  1179. verse 1,

  1180. you will see

  1181. the same idea

  1182. coming through

  1183. there.

  1184. His trust and

  1185. his confidence

  1186. in the

  1187. living God.

  1188. In verse 1,

  1189. He says,

  1190. I cry

  1191. aloud to

  1192. the Lord.

  1193. I lift up

  1194. my voice to

  1195. the Lord for

  1196. mercy.

  1197. And in

  1198. verse 2,

  1199. He says,

  1200. I pour

  1201. out my

  1202. complaint

  1203. before Him.

  1204. Before Him

  1205. I tell

  1206. my trouble.

  1207. And verse

  1208. 5,

  1209. I cry

  1210. to you,

  1211. O Lord.

  1212. I say,

  1213. you are

  1214. my refuge,

  1215. my portion

  1216. in the

  1217. land of

  1218. the living.

  1219. The situation

  1220. is difficult,

  1221. but David

  1222. doesn't see

  1223. the situation

  1224. as hopeless.

  1225. He sees

  1226. the forces

  1227. that are

  1228. arrayed

  1229. against him

  1230. as powerful.

  1231. but there's

  1232. refuge for

  1233. him.

  1234. He has

  1235. that protection

  1236. of the

  1237. wings of

  1238. the almighty

  1239. God of

  1240. Israel,

  1241. the Lord,

  1242. Yahweh,

  1243. the sacred

  1244. name.

  1245. The Jews

  1246. were so

  1247. afraid of

  1248. using this

  1249. name for

  1250. God that

  1251. they had

  1252. substituted

  1253. the name

  1254. Adame.

  1255. It is

  1256. the eternal

  1257. God,

  1258. the great

  1259. I am,

  1260. the unchangeable

  1261. God,

  1262. the covenant

  1263. God who

  1264. was and

  1265. is and

  1266. will continue

  1267. to be

  1268. faithful to

  1269. his people.

  1270. And there's

  1271. David's

  1272. confidence in

  1273. this God.

  1274. Psalm 57

    Psalms 57:3

  1275. verse 3,

  1276. God sends

  1277. his love

  1278. and mercy.

  1279. He's a

  1280. God of

  1281. grace.

  1282. He couldn't

  1283. expect mercy

  1284. from Saul,

  1285. but mercy

  1286. could be

  1287. expected from

  1288. the God

  1289. of mercy.

  1290. so he

  1291. makes his

  1292. appeal to

  1293. him.

  1294. He had

  1295. no strength

  1296. to deliver

  1297. himself.

  1298. His enemies

  1299. were too

  1300. strong,

  1301. but the

  1302. Lord could

  1303. rescue him.

  1304. There was

  1305. no freedom

  1306. for him

  1307. apart from

  1308. that which

  1309. the Lord

  1310. could provide.

  1311. He fled

  1312. to God

  1313. alone.

  1314. He hid

  1315. himself

  1316. beneath the

  1317. wings of

  1318. the eternal.

  1319. God

  1320. wanted

  1321. refuge,

  1322. not the

  1323. cave.

  1324. And that

  1325. was a

  1326. shore

  1327. refuge.

  1328. And we

  1329. were over

  1330. in England

  1331. recently.

  1332. We stayed

  1333. in a house

  1334. and we

  1335. were looking

  1336. out on

  1337. a meadow.

  1338. The grass

  1339. was long,

  1340. but I gather

  1341. it had been

  1342. cut earlier

  1343. in the season.

  1344. And when

  1345. they finished

  1346. cutting the

  1347. grass,

  1348. they noticed

  1349. that a

  1350. pheasant

  1351. was there.

  1352. They built

  1353. his nest

  1354. in the

  1355. grass.

  1356. The mower

  1357. had gone

  1358. over it.

  1359. It was

  1360. still in the

  1361. grass,

  1362. protecting the

  1363. chicks.

  1364. The chicks,

  1365. sad to say,

  1366. had also

  1367. died.

  1368. It wasn't

  1369. a shore

  1370. refuge.

  1371. The hen

  1372. had done

  1373. all that she

  1374. could to

  1375. protect,

  1376. but it

  1377. was inadequate.

  1378. but the

  1379. wings of

  1380. the

  1381. almighty,

  1382. what

  1383. protection?

  1384. We can

  1385. never be

  1386. taken away

  1387. from that

  1388. protection if

  1389. we are found

  1390. in Christ.

  1391. And David

  1392. knew that.

  1393. The wings of

  1394. the almighty,

  1395. the sovereign

  1396. God,

  1397. are a

  1398. sure refuge.

  1399. You are

  1400. my refuge,

  1401. he says in

  1402. verse 5 of

  1403. 142,

  1404. my portion

  1405. in the

  1406. land of

  1407. the living.

  1408. All that

  1409. he needs

  1410. is found

  1411. in the

  1412. living God.

  1413. Or as he

  1414. puts it in

  1415. verse 10

  1416. of Psalm

  1417. 57,

  1418. for great

  1419. is your

  1420. love,

  1421. reaching to

  1422. the heavens,

  1423. your faithfulness

  1424. reaches to

  1425. the sky.

  1426. No wonder

  1427. he can say,

  1428. my heart

  1429. is steadfast.

  1430. Think of

  1431. that,

  1432. of a love

  1433. that reaches

  1434. and a

  1435. faithfulness

  1436. that reaches

  1437. to the

  1438. skies.

  1439. We cannot

  1440. measure the

  1441. heavens,

  1442. they're too

  1443. vast.

  1444. The scientists

  1445. speak to us

  1446. of life

  1447. years because

  1448. the distance

  1449. is so

  1450. great.

  1451. Well,

  1452. in the same

  1453. way, we

  1454. cannot measure

  1455. the love of

  1456. God.

  1457. It reaches

  1458. the skies.

  1459. Surely, it's

  1460. what the

  1461. Apostle Paul

  1462. was speaking

  1463. about when

  1464. he spoke

  1465. about the

  1466. height, the

  1467. breadth, and

  1468. the length

  1469. and depth of

  1470. the love of

  1471. God in

  1472. Christ Jesus.

  1473. Is your

  1474. heart

  1475. steadfast

  1476. this morning?

  1477. Is your

  1478. confidence in

  1479. the living

  1480. God?

  1481. And when

  1482. we think of

  1483. David's

  1484. confidence in

  1485. the living

  1486. God, he

  1487. is also

  1488. assured as

  1489. to his

  1490. future.

  1491. When he

  1492. says in

  1493. Psalm 57

  1494. and verses

  1495. 1, the

  1496. latter part,

  1497. he says,

  1498. until the

  1499. disaster is

  1500. past.

  1501. It's not

  1502. going to be

  1503. here all

  1504. the time.

  1505. It's

  1506. passing.

  1507. The best

  1508. is yet

  1509. to be.

  1510. He goes

  1511. on to say,

  1512. I cry out

  1513. to God

  1514. most high,

  1515. to God

  1516. who fulfills

  1517. his purposes

  1518. for me.

  1519. Has he

  1520. not been

  1521. anointed

  1522. as king?

  1523. Will God

  1524. allow him

  1525. to be

  1526. killed by

  1527. Saul?

  1528. So he

  1529. looks beyond

  1530. the present

  1531. circumstances

  1532. to a

  1533. God who

  1534. works his

  1535. purposes out.

  1536. Saul's

  1537. kingdom

  1538. will grow

  1539. less and

  1540. less, and

  1541. his influence

  1542. will grow

  1543. less and

  1544. less, where

  1545. David's

  1546. influence will

  1547. grow and

  1548. grow.

  1549. should we

  1550. have the

  1551. same

  1552. confidence

  1553. as David?

  1554. Well, of

  1555. course we

  1556. should.

  1557. How can we

  1558. have that?

  1559. Well, I urge

  1560. you to look

  1561. to Christ.

  1562. He too

  1563. was in a

  1564. cave situation,

  1565. but his

  1566. confidence was

  1567. in God.

  1568. He faces

  1569. the cross,

  1570. but he

  1571. looks beyond

  1572. to resurrection.

  1573. Hebrews 5

  1574. and verse 7

  1575. says,

  1576. During the

  1577. days of

  1578. Jesus'

  1579. life on

  1580. earth, he

  1581. offered up

  1582. prayers and

  1583. petitions with

  1584. loud cries and

  1585. tears to the

  1586. one who could

  1587. save him from

  1588. death, and

  1589. he was heard

  1590. because of his

  1591. reverent

  1592. submission.

  1593. And the

  1594. same God

  1595. who fulfilled

  1596. his purposes

  1597. bringing David

  1598. to the throne

  1599. brought David's

  1600. greater son to

  1601. the throne of

  1602. glory, where

  1603. he sits in

  1604. throne for you

  1605. and for me,

  1606. where he ever

  1607. lives to make

  1608. intercession.

  1609. Our future

  1610. is ensured

  1611. because of

  1612. him.

  1613. We shall

  1614. reign with

  1615. him.

  1616. We are

  1617. more than

  1618. conquerors

  1619. through him

  1620. who loved

  1621. us and

  1622. gave himself

  1623. for us.

  1624. And all of

  1625. this should

  1626. cause our

  1627. hearts to

  1628. rejoice.

  1629. For as David

  1630. bears his

  1631. heart before

  1632. the Lord,

  1633. telling the

  1634. Lord exactly

  1635. how it is

  1636. with him,

  1637. he doesn't

  1638. forget to

  1639. praise God.

  1640. Be exalted,

  1641. he says in

  1642. verse 5 of

  1643. Psalm 57,

  1644. O God,

  1645. above the

  1646. heavens,

  1647. let your

  1648. glory be

  1649. over all

  1650. the earth.

  1651. And he

  1652. goes on to

  1653. say,

  1654. I will

  1655. praise you,

  1656. O Lord,

  1657. among the

  1658. nations,

  1659. I will

  1660. sing to

  1661. you among

  1662. the peoples.

  1663. He's not

  1664. so concerned

  1665. with his

  1666. circumstances

  1667. that he

  1668. forgets the

  1669. glory of

  1670. God.

  1671. He remembers

  1672. that that is

  1673. his chief

  1674. end, to

  1675. glorify God.

  1676. And that

  1677. should always

  1678. be our

  1679. concern,

  1680. that God

  1681. should be

  1682. glorified,

  1683. even in our

  1684. difficulties.

  1685. and in our

  1686. trials and

  1687. tribulations.

  1688. Here and

  1689. now,

  1690. should be a

  1691. preparation for

  1692. that great

  1693. day, when

  1694. we shall

  1695. praise the

  1696. Lamb who

  1697. sits upon

  1698. the throne.

  1699. And remember

  1700. him, when

  1701. he suffered

  1702. his physical

  1703. and mental

  1704. suffering,

  1705. and he

  1706. took on

  1707. the powers

  1708. of darkness

  1709. and triumphed

  1710. over them.

  1711. he too

  1712. praised God

  1713. and longed

  1714. for the

  1715. glory of

  1716. God.

  1717. Father, he

  1718. says, the

  1719. time has

  1720. come.

  1721. Glorify your

  1722. Son, that

  1723. your Son

  1724. may glorify

  1725. you.

  1726. So as we

  1727. come to the

  1728. end of our

  1729. time together

  1730. this morning,

  1731. may we be

  1732. enabled to

  1733. say with the

  1734. psalmist, my

  1735. heart is

  1736. steadfast, O

  1737. God.

  1738. My heart is

  1739. steadfast.

  1740. I will sing

  1741. and make

  1742. music.

  1743. Awake my

  1744. soul.

  1745. Awake harp

  1746. and lyre.

  1747. I will

  1748. awaken the

  1749. dawn.

  1750. I will

  1751. praise you, O

  1752. Lord, among

  1753. the nations.

  1754. I will sing

  1755. of you among

  1756. the peoples.

  1757. For great is

  1758. your love.

  1759. Reach into

  1760. the heavens.

  1761. Your faithfulness

  1762. reaches to

  1763. the skies.

  1764. Be exalted,

  1765. O God,

  1766. above the

  1767. heavens.

  1768. Let your

  1769. glory be

  1770. over all

  1771. the earth.

  1772. Let's pray

  1773. together.

  1774. Father, we

  1775. thank you and

  1776. praise you

  1777. that we have

  1778. these psalms,

  1779. a real

  1780. experience of

  1781. real people.

  1782. Thank you

  1783. too that we

  1784. have a

  1785. saviour who

  1786. entered into

  1787. time and

  1788. suffered and

  1789. died in our

  1790. place.

  1791. Thank you

  1792. for all that

  1793. we enjoy in

  1794. him.

  1795. We pray, O

  1796. Lord, then,

  1797. that we will

  1798. go from this

  1799. place rejoicing,

  1800. in all that

  1801. you are,

  1802. the

  1803. great,

  1804. the almighty

  1805. God.

  1806. Amen.

  1807. Thank you.
