  1. Psalm 116 and it's on page 615.

  2. Psalm 116 beginning at verse 1.

  3. I love the Lord for he heard my voice. He heard my cry for mercy.

  4. Because he turned his ear to me, I will call on him as long as I live.

  5. The cords of death entangled me. The anguish of the grave came upon me.

  6. I was overcome by trouble and sorrow.

  7. Then I called on the name of the Lord. O Lord, save me.

  8. The Lord is gracious and righteous. Our God is full of compassion.

  9. The Lord protects the simple-hearted. When I was in great need, he saved me.

  10. Be at rest once more, O my soul, for the Lord has been good to you.

  11. For you, O Lord, have delivered my soul from death, my eyes from tears, my feet from stumbling,

  12. that I may walk before the Lord in the land of the living.

  13. I believed, therefore I said, I am greatly afflicted.

  14. And in my dismay I said, all men are liars.

  15. How can I repay the Lord for all his goodness to me?

  16. I will lift up the cup of salvation and call on the name of the Lord.

  17. I will fulfill my vows to the Lord in the presence of all his people.

  18. Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints.

  19. O Lord, truly, I am your servant.

  20. I am your servant, the son of your maidservant.

  21. You have freed me from my chains.

  22. I will sacrifice a thank-offering to you and call on the name of the Lord.

  23. I will fulfill my vows to the Lord in the presence of all his people,

  24. in the courts of the house of the Lord,

  25. in your midst, O Jerusalem.

  26. Praise the Lord.

  27. Thank you.

  28. Thanks, Chris.

  29. I'm going to ask Tom.

  30. He's going to come up and speak.

  31. Before he does, I'm going to pray for Tom.

  32. Is that okay?

  33. Yep.

  34. Easy.

  35. Good now.

  36. Let's pray for Tom.

  37. Father, we thank you again for your goodness to us,

  38. and we thank you for your gifts towards us in people.

  39. We thank you for Tom.

  40. We thank you for Tom.

  41. And we ask now that you would help him as he preaches and seeks to explain this psalm to us.

  42. We pray that our attention, our focus will be drawn not to him, but to you.

  43. We pray that you would fill him and us with your Holy Spirit, so that we may not only hear your words, but understand them.

  44. That they would take effect in our lives, changing us and transforming us.

  45. And so we pray that we will all be encouraged and built up through what we are now going to do together.

  46. We ask this in Jesus' name.

  47. Amen.

  48. Amen.

  49. Sorry, before you start, there are pens around.

  50. If anybody wants to take notes, on the back of your new sheet, there's a little spot there.

  51. If you'd like a pen, I have some here.

  52. Anybody want one?

  53. Okay.

  54. Okay.

  55. Well, it wouldn't be right unless I had my usual Sunday morning greeting.

  56. So, good morning, everyone.

  57. Good morning.

  58. Good morning.

  59. Good morning.

  60. So, as Johnny has mentioned, today we're going to be talking about love.

  61. And by way of introduction, I'm going to talk a little bit about who or what do we love.

  62. So if we can think of some things that we love in our lives.

  63. And as Johnny mentioned, how do we know that we love them?

  64. So I'm going to play a little, well, it's not a game, but a little exercise.

  65. That if you know that I love these things, raise your hand, nod your head, whatever it might be.

  66. So when I was younger, I loved the turtles.

  67. Did anyone know that?

  68. Yeah.

  69. Now, I love football.

  70. I don't know that.

  71. Yeah.

  72. I love grace.

  73. Does anyone know that?

  74. Okay.

  75. And I hope that you all know that I love the Lord.

  76. Some of these things were demonstrated.

  77. So like with the turtles, people knew that I loved the turtles because I dressed up like Raphael.

  78. The red turtle.

  79. I had borrowed my mum's red bandana.

  80. She didn't mind.

  81. But yeah, so the way we show that we love things is we live it out.

  82. We demonstrate that love.

  83. So with football, I play football.

  84. I talk about football.

  85. With grace, I show her my love.

  86. I tell her about my love.

  87. And it's the same with the Lord that we need to show him that we love him.

  88. We need to tell him that we love him.

  89. Yeah, so this psalm is all about God's love.

  90. So we're going to go behind the scenes first.

  91. And we're going to look a little bit about this psalm and where it fits in with the Bible.

  92. So a bit of background is that this psalm makes up what is called by the Jewish the Hallel.

  93. This word means praise.

  94. And if you haven't made the connection, Hallelujah means praise the Lord.

  95. And Hallel is the Hebrew word for praise.

  96. So there are six psalms in the Hallel, 113 to 118.

  97. And these psalms form part of their liturgy, their customary public worship together, things they sing at feasts.

  98. So it's part of that.

  99. It's a psalm of praise.

  100. And looking more specifically at this psalm, it's a personal experience of a man.

  101. It could have been a king.

  102. It may have been David.

  103. But we're not told who it was.

  104. So there's one man's experience of death.

  105. When communally sung, that death may have been understood as a deliverance from Egypt of the Jewish people.

  106. But nonetheless, this psalm is about the experience of God's love in the psalmist's life.

  107. So this psalm can be roughly taken in two sections.

  108. From verses 1 to 11, which is talking about God's love being shown.

  109. And verses 12 to 19, where we can see the response to God's love.

  110. Okay, so the first point is that the Lord loves the psalmist.

  111. So when I was preparing this, what hit me straight away was the first four words.

  112. I love the Lord.

  113. And that's what I kind of focused on in preparing that it's about the psalmist's love for the Lord.

  114. About how he loves the Lord.

  115. But then in thinking a bit more, it's not actually his love that's primary.

  116. It's God's love for the psalmist.

  117. So as we read on, we see how God demonstrates his love to the psalmist.

  118. So we see in verses 1 to 2, that the Lord hears the psalmist's cry for mercy.

  119. The psalmist was in a terrible situation.

  120. Death was very close to him.

  121. But he cried out to God.

  122. And the Lord heard him.

  123. So in verses 1 to 2, I love the Lord, for he heard my voice.

  124. He heard my cry for mercy.

  125. Because he turned his ear to me, I will call on him as long as I live.

  126. So our God is a God who listens.

  127. He's not a far off and distant God who we can't be in touch with.

  128. But he is one who hears and answers when we talk to him.

  129. Okay, so how else does the Lord show his love to that psalmist?

  130. He delivers him from death.

  131. We are made aware of this, again, terrible situation that the psalmist is in in verse 3.

  132. The cords of death entangled me.

  133. The anguish of the grave came upon me.

  134. I was overcome by trouble and sorrow.

  135. Okay, so this man is in fear of death.

  136. He suffered anguish.

  137. As we read, he was overcome by trouble and sorrow.

  138. Yet the Lord delivered him from that situation.

  139. In verse 6, we see that he was in great need and the Lord saved him.

  140. In verse 8, he declares that his soul has been delivered from death.

  141. His eyes from tears and his feet from stumbling.

  142. So the Lord has shown to the psalmist his great love by delivering him from death.

  143. Okay, and another way in which the Lord shows his love is that he protects him.

  144. So in verse 6, it says,

  145. The Lord protects the simple-hearted.

  146. When I was in great need, he saved me.

  147. Okay, so the psalmist comes out with a statement of how the Lord protects the simple-hearted.

  148. It's just a simple, sincere, it's not complicated.

  149. He trusts and that's it.

  150. There's no complication about his faith.

  151. And the psalmist has the assurance that the Lord will continue to protect him.

  152. It's not, he says this in the present tense.

  153. The Lord protects.

  154. It's not a past thing only.

  155. It's not only for the future, but it's a present protection for the simple-hearted.

  156. Okay, so having looked at how the Lord demonstrates his love to the psalmist,

  157. we can ask, why does he show that love?

  158. Okay, so in verse 7, we can see that the Lord shows his love to the psalmist so that he can rest.

  159. Be at rest once more, O my soul, for the Lord has been good to you.

  160. In the Lord's deliverance and protection, the psalmist can rest.

  161. A good note I saw on rest was that he can enjoy a state of unthreatened well-being,

  162. knowing that the Lord is protecting him.

  163. So he can rest.

  164. Another reason why the Lord delivers the psalmist is so that he can walk before the Lord.

  165. So in verses 8 and 9.

  166. For you, O Lord, have delivered my soul from death, my eyes from tears, my feet from stumbling,

  167. that I may walk before the Lord in the land of the living.

  168. So delivered so that he can rest, and delivered so that he may walk before the Lord.

  169. And this walking for the Lord, living his life for him, is a public thing.

  170. It's in the land of the living.

  171. It's not in his bedroom.

  172. It's not in his own house.

  173. It's in the land where there are people all around him.

  174. And we see in verse 10 that these things come about by faith.

  175. So that resting and that walking for the Lord is by faith.

  176. In verse 10 it says,

  177. I believed, therefore I said, I am greatly afflicted.

  178. So these, in verse 4 and verse 10 and 11, there are quotations.

  179. And I think those can be taken as the psalmist's prayer when he was in trouble.

  180. So it was his faith that caused him to cry out to God.

  181. And it's through his faith that he can rest.

  182. And that he can walk and live for God.

  183. So now having, we can see how this psalm talks to us about how the Lord loves the psalmist.

  184. How he does that and why he does that.

  185. We can move on to talk about how the Lord loves us.

  186. This psalm points us to how the Lord loves us.

  187. So how does he show that love?

  188. As I previously mentioned, this psalmist may have been a king.

  189. It may have been David.

  190. But there is a king who went through anguish, trouble and sorrow for us.

  191. Let's look back at verse 3.

  192. It says,

  193. So when preparing this, what came to mind was Jesus' experience in the Garden of Gethsemane.

  194. He was overcome by trouble and sorrow because of what was ahead of him.

  195. Listen to his words in Matthew.

  196. Then he said to them, this is Jesus speaking,

  197. My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death.

  198. Stay here and keep watch with me.

  199. Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed,

  200. My father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me.

  201. Yet not as I will, but as you will.

  202. So he cried out to his father that if it were possible,

  203. that this task that God had prepared for him would be taken away.

  204. But he was obedient.

  205. He followed through with what God the Father had planned for him.

  206. And Jesus was delivered over to death at that time for us.

  207. So that we can have life.

  208. We, like the psalmist, are in danger of death.

  209. Not only a physical death, but also a spiritual one,

  210. because of our rebellion against God.

  211. Because of our natural state,

  212. we deserve to be separated from God because he is perfect.

  213. We have a sinful nature and we deserve to be separated.

  214. But like God shows in verse 5 to the psalmist,

  215. his graciousness, righteousness and compassion,

  216. likewise he does to us in Christ.

  217. Listen to this in Romans 5 verse 8.

    Romans 5:8

  218. But God demonstrates his own love for us in this.

  219. While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

  220. So we deserve not only punishment in the future,

  221. but we deserve immediate punishment,

  222. that is death, for our rebellion.

  223. There's nothing stopping God,

  224. apart from his own grace towards us,

  225. from ending everything now because of our sin.

  226. But God has delivered us from that.

  227. And then by faith,

  228. he promises to protect us

  229. and give us life for all eternity,

  230. trusting in what Jesus has done.

  231. So like the psalmist,

  232. we can see how the Lord loves us

  233. and how he's shown it to us in Christ.

  234. And likewise,

  235. there are also reasons why he delivers us.

  236. So again in verse 7,

  237. we can have rest.

  238. We can have perfect rest in Jesus

  239. and listen to his invitation to us

  240. in Matthew chapter 11.

    Matthew 11 chapter mention

  241. Come to me,

  242. all you who are weary and burdened,

  243. and I will give you rest.

  244. Take my yoke upon you

  245. and learn from me,

  246. for I am gentle and humble in heart,

  247. and you will find rest for your souls.

  248. We can have rest in Jesus

  249. because he has done it all for us.

  250. We don't need to earn God's love.

  251. He has already loved us.

  252. And yeah,

  253. when speaking this,

  254. when preparing,

  255. rest is something that

  256. I need to preach this to myself

  257. as much as to anyone else.

  258. That we can have rest

  259. from fear of punishment,

  260. rest from feeling the need

  261. to earn a salvation,

  262. rest from fear,

  263. rest from worry,

  264. rest from feeling

  265. that you have to get everything right.

  266. Rest from everything

  267. because of what Jesus has done.

  268. So,

  269. another reason,

  270. just like the psalmist,

  271. is that we are delivered

  272. so that we can walk

  273. before the Lord.

  274. So we can rest

  275. in Jesus

  276. and we are delivered

  277. so that we can walk

  278. before the Lord.

  279. And again,

  280. it's in the land of the living.

  281. God saves us

  282. and then sends us

  283. into the world

  284. to be his witnesses,

  285. to demonstrate

  286. that love that he has shown us

  287. to other people.

  288. And again,

  289. this resting

  290. and walking

  291. comes by faith.

  292. In verse 10,

  293. I believed,

  294. said the psalmist,

  295. therefore I said,

  296. I am greatly afflicted.

  297. And it's through faith

  298. that we can rest,

  299. through faith

  300. that we can walk.

  301. So we need to trust

  302. in him

  303. and we will find rest

  304. and we will be commissioned

  305. to live for him

  306. in this world.

  307. So we have seen

  308. that the Lord loves the psalmist

  309. and the Lord loves us.

  310. But how did the psalmist

  311. respond

  312. to the Lord's love?

  313. Okay.

  314. The psalmist

  315. loves the Lord.

  316. In verses 1

  317. and in 12 to 19,

  318. we can see

  319. the psalmist's response

  320. to the Lord's love

  321. that was shown to him.

  322. As I mentioned earlier on,

  323. what I focused on

  324. initially

  325. was the psalmist's love.

  326. But that in fact

  327. was a response

  328. to God's love.

  329. Listen to this.

  330. I love the Lord

  331. for he heard my voice.

  332. He heard my cry

  333. for mercy.

  334. So it was the love

  335. expressed

  336. because of love

  337. towards him.

  338. And as we read

  339. through the rest

  340. of the psalm,

  341. we can see

  342. how he responds.

  343. In verse 12,

  344. the psalmist asks

  345. the question,

  346. How can I repay

  347. the Lord

  348. for all his goodness

  349. to me?

  350. He then goes on

  351. in the following verses

  352. to explain to us

  353. how he responds

  354. to the Lord's love

  355. towards him.

  356. Okay.

  357. So in verse 13,

  358. it says,

  359. I will lift up

  360. the cup of salvation

  361. and call

  362. on the name

  363. of the Lord.

  364. One translation

  365. of the Bible

  366. puts it like this.

  367. I will take

  368. the cup of salvation

  369. and call upon

  370. the name of the Lord.

  371. I think this is helpful

  372. to understand

  373. what is meant

  374. by this lifting up

  375. of the cup of salvation.

  376. That it's a receiving

  377. of what God has done.

  378. The receiving

  379. of God's love.

  380. It's not something

  381. that he needs to do

  382. to add on

  383. to what God has done,

  384. but it's something

  385. that he needs

  386. to receive,

  387. receiving God's love.

  388. From what I understand

  389. about the cup of salvation,

  390. that this could be

  391. referring to a cup

  392. of wine drunk

  393. by the Jews

  394. at a meal,

  395. which would then

  396. result in a

  397. thank offering.

  398. They had sacrifices

  399. at Thanksgiving

  400. in the Old Testament.

  401. Or it could be

  402. referring to the cup

  403. drank at the

  404. Passover meal.

  405. But whatever cup

  406. has been referred to,

  407. it's been in reference

  408. to Thanksgiving

  409. for what God has done.

  410. So in response

  411. to God's love,

  412. the psalmist is thankful.

  413. And we can see

  414. that thankfulness

  415. in verse 17.

  416. I will sacrifice

  417. a thank offering

  418. to you

  419. and call

  420. on the name

  421. of the Lord.

  422. So,

  423. in receiving

  424. God's love

  425. with thankfulness,

  426. he calls

  427. on the name

  428. of the Lord.

  429. So he is thankful

  430. for what God has done

  431. and he calls

  432. on the name

  433. of the Lord.

  434. The Lord is the one

  435. that he will call on,

  436. who he will cry out to

  437. for help.

  438. He is the one

  439. he can trust in

  440. and depend on

  441. for the rest of his life.

  442. Like in verse 2,

  443. I will call on him

  444. as long as I live.

  445. So another response,

  446. so there's being thankful,

  447. calling on God's name

  448. and service.

  449. In verses 14

  450. and 16 and 18

  451. we see how

  452. he wants to serve

  453. the Lord.

  454. He's talking about

  455. fulfilling his vows

  456. about how he is

  457. God's servant.

  458. Again,

  459. fulfilling my vows

  460. to the Lord

  461. in the presence

  462. of all his people.

  463. So the psalmist

  464. declares himself

  465. to be someone

  466. who is going to

  467. serve the Lord.

  468. And again,

  469. it's not a private matter,

  470. it's a public thing,

  471. to be lived out

  472. in the presence

  473. of all the Lord's people.

  474. So the response

  475. is to God's love,

  476. receiving that love,

  477. being thankful,

  478. calling on the Lord

  479. and service.

  480. So having looked

  481. at the psalmist's response,

  482. let's ask the question,

  483. what will our response be?

  484. Do we love the Lord?

  485. What is our response

  486. to God's amazing love?

  487. Will we,

  488. like the psalmist,

  489. take the cup of salvation

  490. and call on the name

  491. of the Lord?

  492. Have we received

  493. what the Lord

  494. has done for us?

  495. It's not something

  496. we need to do more,

  497. but it's an accepting

  498. of what he has done.

  499. So as I mentioned,

  500. the cup of salvation

  501. could be referring

  502. to a cup drunk

  503. at the Passover meal

  504. called the cup

  505. of redemption.

  506. And this is something

  507. that the Jews use

  508. at the Passover meal

  509. to symbolize

  510. the blood

  511. of the Passover lamb

  512. back in the times

  513. of Egypt

  514. when that blood

  515. saved them

  516. from the punishment

  517. that the Egyptians

  518. faced

  519. of the death

  520. of the firstborns.

  521. And Jesus,

  522. on the night

  523. that he was betrayed,

  524. while observing

  525. the Passover meal,

  526. he took a cup

  527. and he used it

  528. to symbolize

  529. his own blood.

  530. Not the blood

  531. of the lamb

  532. of long ago,

  533. but his own blood

  534. shed for us.

  535. So have we received

  536. that cup of salvation

  537. that Jesus offers

  538. to us?

  539. The salvation

  540. that is available

  541. to us

  542. by faith.

  543. That in Jesus'

  544. blood shed for us

  545. for our sin,

  546. we can be forgiven

  547. and enjoy

  548. spending eternity

  549. with him.

  550. Okay,

  551. so have we received?

  552. Do we call

  553. on the name

  554. of the Lord?

  555. In verse 13,

  556. I will lift up

  557. the cup of salvation

  558. and call

  559. on the name

  560. of the Lord.

  561. So this calling,

  562. it's not just

  563. a vocal exercise,

  564. it's a living exercise.

  565. It's not just

  566. a verbal

  567. expression,

  568. it's not just

  569. words.

  570. In Romans,

  571. Paul says,

  572. for everyone

  573. who calls

  574. on the name

  575. of the Lord

  576. will be saved.

  577. And it's not

  578. just a verbal

  579. thing.

  580. The word

  581. that Paul uses

  582. for calls

  583. is the same

  584. that he uses

  585. when talking

  586. about how he

  587. appeals to Caesar

  588. in Acts.

  589. In that case,

  590. he was asking

  591. that his case

  592. as he was arrested

  593. would be judged

  594. by Caesar.

  595. He was throwing

  596. himself on

  597. Caesar's mercy.

  598. He was submitting

  599. to Caesar's

  600. authority.

  601. And there were

  602. implications of

  603. calling on Caesar.

  604. He would have to be

  605. obedient to Caesar's

  606. ruling.

  607. Whatever Caesar said,

  608. that is what would go.

  609. He had to be obedient

  610. to Caesar's procedure,

  611. the way of doing things.

  612. And it's exactly

  613. the same with us.

  614. That calling

  615. that we need

  616. to do on the Lord

  617. is an obedience

  618. to God's authority.

  619. It's to throw

  620. ourselves at his

  621. mercy

  622. and to

  623. submit to what

  624. he wants for us.

  625. But it's not

  626. submission to a

  627. tyrant

  628. or to a far-off

  629. king,

  630. but to a loving,

  631. gracious,

  632. righteous,

  633. and compassionate

  634. God that we can

  635. see in this psalm.

  636. Verse 5,

  637. The Lord is

  638. gracious and

  639. righteous.

  640. Our God is

  641. full of

  642. compassion.

  643. So have we

  644. received?

  645. Do we call on

  646. the name of the

  647. Lord?

  648. Do we respond

  649. with thanksgiving?

  650. So like the

  651. psalmist,

  652. he offered a

  653. sacrifice of

  654. thanksgiving to

  655. the Lord.

  656. But for us,

  657. we don't need to

  658. offer those same

  659. types of sacrifices

  660. like they did in

  661. the Old Testament.

  662. But we have a

  663. different way of

  664. doing things.

  665. And Paul explains

  666. a bit about this

  667. in Romans chapter

    Romans 12 chapter mention

  668. 12.

  669. Therefore I

  670. urge you,

  671. brothers,

  672. in view of

  673. God's mercy,

  674. to offer your

  675. bodies as

  676. living sacrifices.

  677. Holy and

  678. pleasing to God,

  679. this is your

  680. spiritual act of

  681. worship.

  682. So this is our

  683. sacrifice done to

  684. God.

  685. This is our

  686. thank offering.

  687. This is to

  688. offer ourselves

  689. in service to

  690. him out of

  691. thankfulness for

  692. all that he has

  693. done.

  694. So this

  695. verse in Romans

  696. also talks about

  697. service.

  698. Another way that

  699. the end of it can

  700. be translated is

  701. that this is your

  702. rational service.

  703. And the word

  704. that's used there

  705. is logikos,

  706. it's the Greek

  707. word, and that

  708. means logical.

  709. And when Paul

  710. says in view of

  711. God's mercy,

  712. the logical thing,

  713. the rational thing

  714. to do is to

  715. serve him because

  716. of all that he

  717. has done for us.

  718. So as the

  719. psalmist offers

  720. his service to

  721. the Lord,

  722. in verses 14,

  723. I will fulfill

  724. my vows to

  725. the Lord,

  726. 16, I will

  727. fulfill my,

  728. 18, I will

  729. fulfill my

  730. vows to the

  731. Lord, and

  732. 16, he

  733. declares himself

  734. to be God's

  735. servant.

  736. And just like

  737. the psalmist,

  738. so should we

  739. declare ourselves

  740. to be servants

  741. to the Lord.

  742. But what does

  743. that service

  744. look like?

  745. What is it

  746. like to serve

  747. God?

  748. Well, it's

  749. to live as

  750. he wants us

  751. to.

  752. He wants us

  753. to get to

  754. know him

  755. more through

  756. reading his

  757. word, through

  758. talking to him,

  759. through spending

  760. time with his

  761. people.

  762. He wants us

  763. to be

  764. representatives for

  765. him in this

  766. world, doing

  767. what he would

  768. do, saying

  769. what he would

  770. say, if it

  771. were him in

  772. that situation.

  773. He wants us

  774. to make him

  775. known to other

  776. people through

  777. what we say

  778. and how we

  779. live.

  780. We need to

  781. live God's

  782. way, not

  783. our own.

  784. We need to

  785. live like

  786. Jesus lived.

  787. So, in

  788. response to

  789. God's love,

  790. do we receive

  791. what he has

  792. done for us?

  793. Are we

  794. thankful?

  795. Do we call

  796. on his name

  797. and will we

  798. serve him?

  799. And one of the

  800. ways, as we've

  801. seen, that the

  802. psalmist responds

  803. is with rest.

  804. And that, too,

  805. should be our

  806. way of

  807. responding.

  808. We can be

  809. responding by

  810. resting in all

  811. the ways that I

  812. was mentioning

  813. earlier.

  814. And that

  815. resting is one

  816. of the ways in

  817. which we can

  818. publicly

  819. demonstrate our

  820. love for the

  821. Lord.

  822. Resting in

  823. Jesus.

  824. People will

  825. notice that we

  826. are a peaceful,

  827. a joyful,

  828. a loving people

  829. because of that

  830. rest that we

  831. have.

  832. So, like in

  833. the case of

  834. the psalmist,

  835. these acts of

  836. receiving, of

  837. thanksgiving, of

  838. calling, of

  839. service, of

  840. resting, are

  841. all public

  842. demonstrations of

  843. our own love

  844. for the Lord.

  845. So, as sinful

  846. people, we will

  847. never be able to

  848. love the Lord as

  849. we should.

  850. We'll never be

  851. able to love him

  852. as he wants us

  853. to love him.

  854. But thanks to

  855. God's amazing

  856. grace, his love

  857. for us doesn't

  858. depend on whether

  859. we love him or

  860. not.

  861. He has already

  862. loved us.

  863. The title of

  864. this, of what

  865. I'm talking about

  866. is, we love

  867. because he first

  868. loved us.

  869. And it is

  870. Jesus' life that

  871. counts for us if

  872. we trust in him.

  873. He is the one

  874. who loves God

  875. as we should.

  876. And because of

  877. God's grace,

  878. through faith in

  879. Jesus, it's as

  880. if we are

  881. not only Jesus

  882. has done it, it's

  883. as if we have

  884. done it as well

  885. by faith.

  886. So we can rest

  887. in Jesus, that we

  888. don't need to love

  889. God any certain

  890. amount, any degree

  891. before being loved

  892. by him.

  893. That's already

  894. done.

  895. God has already

  896. loved us.

  897. And then we are

  898. free to respond to

  899. God's love by

  900. loving him in

  901. return.

  902. So from this

  903. psalm we can see

  904. how the Lord

  905. loves the

  906. psalmist.

  907. And he shows

  908. that love to

  909. him and has

  910. reasons for it.

  911. And it's the

  912. same with us.

  913. It points to how

  914. the Lord loves

  915. us.

  916. Again, he

  917. demonstrates it to

  918. us and there are

  919. reasons for it.

  920. The psalmist's

  921. response to God's

  922. love is in loving

  923. him in return.

  924. And then the

  925. challenge is, do

  926. we love the

  927. Lord?

  928. Do people around

  929. us know that we

  930. love the Lord?

  931. If I were to do

  932. that same exercise

  933. at work or in

  934. college or in

  935. school with my

  936. friends or if you

  937. did it with your

  938. friends, would

  939. people raise their

  940. hands?

  941. Would people nod

  942. their heads if

  943. they asked?

  944. If you asked, do

  945. you know that I

  946. love the Lord?

  947. Let's make that a

  948. challenge.

  949. Can we make that

  950. known to other

  951. people that we

  952. love the Lord?

  953. Can we, like the

  954. psalmist, declare in

  955. verse 1, I love

  956. the Lord?

  957. And it's because of

  958. how he first loved

  959. us.

  960. Let's pray.

  961. Father, thank you

  962. for your great love

  963. to us.

  964. thank you that

  965. before we were

  966. born, before we

  967. could walk or talk,

  968. you loved us.

  969. And Lord, thank you

  970. that that love

  971. doesn't depend on

  972. what we do.

  973. It just depends on

  974. you and how much

  975. you love us.

  976. Thank you for your

  977. word which teaches

  978. us about your love.

  979. love.

  980. Thank you for how

  981. you have loved the

  982. psalmist and

  983. demonstrated that

  984. to him for our

  985. benefit as well as

  986. his.

  987. Thank you for how

  988. you love us in

  989. Christ.

  990. Please help us to

  991. trust in what Jesus

  992. has done, that he

  993. has taken our

  994. punishment.

  995. And by faith we

  996. can have life.

  997. thank you for the

  998. psalmist response

  999. modelling how we

  1000. are to respond to

  1001. your love in

  1002. loving you in

  1003. return.

  1004. Please help us to

  1005. love you as we

  1006. should in a

  1007. public way, not

  1008. just on a Sunday,

  1009. not just with our

  1010. church family, but

  1011. amongst our

  1012. friends, to be

  1013. someone, to be

  1014. people who are

  1015. known to love the

  1016. Lord.

  1017. Lord, please

  1018. help us with

  1019. this.

  1020. Help us to be

  1021. confident in our

  1022. love for him.

  1023. Lord, thank you

  1024. that you teach us

  1025. and Lord, thank you

1026. that you help us to

1027. live as you want us

  1028. to.

  1029. Amen.

  1030. Amen.

  1031. Amen.

  1032. Amen.

  1033. Amen.

  1034. Amen.

  1035. Amen.
