  1. Ian's going to read from Psalm 22, which is on page 554, the first 21 verses, and then

  2. Jürgen is going to pick up from the end. Thank you.

  3. Psalm 22.

  4. My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from saving me, so far from

  5. the words of my groaning? O my God, I cry out by day, but you do not answer, and by night,

  6. and I am not silent. Yet you are enthroned as the Holy One. You are the praise of Israel.

  7. In you our fathers put their trust. They trusted, and you delivered them. They cried to you and

  8. were saved. In you they trusted, and were not disappointed. But I am a worm and not a man,

  9. scorned by men and despised by the people. All who see me mock me. They hurl insults,

  10. shaking their heads. He trusts in the Lord. Let the Lord rescue him. Let him deliver him,

  11. since he delights in him. Yet you brought me out of the womb. You made me trust in you,

  12. even at my mother's breast. From birth I was cast upon you, and from my mother's womb you have been

  13. my God. Do not be far from me, for trouble is near, and there is no one to help. Many bulls

  14. surround me. Strong bulls of Bashan encircle me. Roaring lions tearing their prey open their mouths

  15. wide against me. I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint. My heart has turned

  16. to wax. It has melted away within me. My strength is dried up like a potsherd, and my tongue sticks to

  17. the roof of my mouth. You lay me in the dust of death. Dogs have surrounded me. A band of evil men

  18. has encircled me, and they have pierced my hands and my feet. I can count all my bones. People stare

  19. and gloat over me. They divide my garments among them, and cast lots from my clothing. But you, O Lord,

  20. be not far off. O my strength, come quickly to help me. Deliver my life from the sword,

  21. my precious life from the power of the dogs. Rescue me from the mouths of the lions. Save me from the

  22. horns of the wild oxen.

  23. I will declare your name to my brothers. In a congregation I will praise you. You who fear the

  24. Lord, praise him. All you descendants of Jacob, honour him. Revere him, all you descendants of Israel.

  25. For he has not despised or disdained the suffering of the afflicted one. He has not hidden his face from

  26. him, but has listened to his cry for help. From you comes the theme of my praise in the great assembly.

  27. Before those who fear you will I fulfil my vows. The poor will eat and be satisfied. They who seek

  28. the Lord will praise him. May your hearts live forever. All the ends of the earth will remember

  29. and turn to the Lord, and all the families of the nations will bow down before him. For dominion

  30. belongs to the Lord, and he rules over the nations. All the rich of the earth will feast and worship.

  31. All who go down to the dust will kneel before him. Those who cannot keep themselves alive.

  32. Posterity will serve him. Future generations will be told about the Lord. They will proclaim

  33. his righteousness to a people yet unborn, for he has done it.

  34. Judge Jean-Laure Jo Assam. Thank you, Alex.

  35. Thank you, Alex.

  36. Great for Alex and for us as we look at this together.

  37. Father, again, we thank you so much for the Psalms,

  38. for all the things we have been learning from them,

  39. primarily about you and your son.

  40. And we thank you for Alex,

  41. for the time that he has put in preparing this.

  42. We pray that you would fill him now with your spirit,

  43. as we ask that you would fill us with your spirit,

  44. that we may hear your words to us.

  45. May it change us and transform us

  46. to see your world and life from your perspective.

  47. And may we be better equipped to follow you

  48. as we live in this world.

  49. Encourage us all this morning and we pray.

  50. In Jesus' name.

  51. Amen.

  52. Well, thank you all for your prayers during the week.

  53. As I've been working my way through this Psalm,

  54. it's been an encouragement and it's been a challenge.

  55. And it's only been through God's spirit at work

  56. that it has been able to be that for me.

  57. And I'm afraid that as we look at this Psalm 22 this morning,

  58. it'll be encouraging and challenging as well for you,

  59. as well as you listen to it.

  60. As many of you know, over the last year,

  61. we as a wider family have had health issues.

  62. Many questions have been asked of God,

  63. like why does he allow suffering

  64. when he's meant to be a loving God?

  65. Why does this happen to good people?

  66. A friend of mine recently told me

  67. that his son had been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis.

  68. And in this past year,

  69. we have all experienced,

  70. either firsthand or by association,

  71. the realities of the economic collapse

  72. and the effect on jobs and employment.

  73. We have heard of corruption

  74. and inequality in world politics.

  75. Every week we seem to hear of celebrity

  76. or normal people,

  77. marriage breakups or relationship breakups.

  78. We have heard of yet more natural disasters,

  79. not to mention their horrific car crash

  80. up in Donegal recently.

  81. We have heard of Christians,

  82. followers of Jesus Christ,

  83. being captured,

  84. tortured

  85. and sometimes killed

  86. just for saying that they followed him.

  87. On a daily basis,

  88. some of us or people we know

  89. struggle just to get out of bed.

  90. They can't think of a single reason

  91. why they should even continue to live.

  92. I paint a bleak picture,

  93. I know,

  94. but this is the reality of life.

  95. This is the way it is.

  96. There is nowhere in the Bible

  97. or anywhere else

  98. that says that life as a follower of Jesus or not

  99. will be easy.

  100. There is no self-help book.

  101. There is no secret mantra.

  102. There is no special tea cocktail.

  103. There is no secret password.

  104. There is no religion

  105. can promise us

  106. or deliver

  107. a pain-free

  108. or suffering-free life.

  109. Suffering

  110. is part and parcel of life

  111. whether you are a Christian or not.

  112. And if you are not sure about that,

  113. just look around the room.

  114. I am sure we have all stubbed a toe.

  115. Our text this morning,

  116. Psalm 22,

  117. Paints and 30 blue pits for two.

  118. David is at the stage

  119. where he is either

  120. king-in-waiting

  121. or anointed king.

  122. And so has every reason

  123. to be joyful and celebratory.

  124. But the reality

  125. is the tongue-lofters.

  126. He is in deep turmoil and anguish.

  127. Let's read it.

  128. First one.

  129. My God,

  130. my God,

  131. why have you forsaken me?

  132. Why are you so far

  133. from saving me?

  134. So far from the words

  135. of my groaning.

  136. Here David is crying out to God

  137. in a brutally honest way.

  138. It's not obvious from the psalm

  139. why exactly he is feeling like this.

  140. But it is safe to say

  141. that he is suffering deeply,

  142. psychologically.

  143. He feels abandoned,

  144. hopeless.

  145. Look at the end of verse 2.

  146. Or even at verse 2.

  147. Oh my God,

  148. I cry out by day,

  149. but you do not answer.

  150. By night,

  151. and I'm not silent.

  152. He can't even sleep,

  153. he's crying out to God so much.

  154. But there is some indication

  155. as to why he is suffering.

  156. You do not answer.

  157. God is silent.

  158. David is calling out to God

  159. day and night,

  160. continuously.

  161. And God,

  162. the same God,

  163. who commanded Samuel

  164. in 1 Samuel 16

  165. to anoint David

  166. as king over Israel.

  167. This God

  168. is silent.

  169. David rightly feels abandoned

  170. by God.

  171. We too can feel abandoned

  172. by God

  173. when we face yet another

  174. uphill battle in our life.

  175. And we must face it

  176. with a seemingly silent God.

  177. We are reminded of Jesus'

  178. suffering on the cross

  179. in Matthew 27,

    Matthew 27:46

  180. verse 46,

  181. where he says,

  182. also,

  183. My God,

  184. my God,

  185. why have you forsaken me?

  186. Jesus himself feels abandoned

  187. by God.

  188. I'm sure at some stage

  189. we have all cried out

  190. like David.

  191. Maybe not those very words,

  192. but still,

  193. it's been a cry of anguish

  194. called out to God.

  195. The reality of our lives

  196. is that very often

  197. we feel like

  198. God either isn't there,

  199. or if he is there,

  200. he just doesn't care,

  201. or he is silent

  202. and can't actually do anything

  203. to help us anyway.

  204. Does that sound familiar?

  205. Can you think of

  206. times in your own life

  207. when you felt like that?

  208. Well, surely,

  209. surely that's not

  210. what the passage is saying.

  211. Is it?

  212. When we look at the passage

  213. we get a very different,

  214. we get very different

  215. pictures of David

  216. and of God.

  217. Look how David

  218. sees himself

  219. in verse 6.

  220. But I am a worm

  221. and not a man.

  222. Scorned by men

  223. and despised

  224. by the people.

  225. All who see me

  226. mock me.

  227. They hurl insults,

  228. shaking their heads,

  229. saying,

  230. He trusts in the Lord.

  231. Let the Lord rescue him.

  232. Let him deliver him,

  233. since he delights in him.

  234. How different that is

  235. from the people

  236. of the past

  237. who put their trust in God.

  238. Verses 4 and 5.

  239. In you our fathers

  240. put their trust.

  241. They trusted

  242. and you delivered them.

  243. They cried out to you

  244. and were saved.

  245. In you they trusted

  246. and were not disappointed.

  247. poor, poor David.

  248. He sees that in the past

  249. those who trusted in God

  250. and cried out to him

  251. were rescued

  252. and saved.

  253. But yet when David

  254. does the same thing,

  255. where is God?

  256. A further contrast

  257. is in verses 9 and 10.

  258. Yet you brought me

  259. out of the womb.

  260. You made me trust in you,

  261. even at my mother's breast.

  262. From birth

  263. I was cast upon you.

  264. From my mother's womb

  265. you have been my God.

  266. David acknowledges

  267. that God controls life.

  268. He is sovereign.

  269. But the verses that follow

  270. show David

  271. in dire straits.

  272. He is fearful for his life

  273. and he is spent.

  274. We get the feeling

  275. that he is ready to give up.

  276. We'll get to those verses

  277. in a minute.

  278. But first let's just recap.

  279. David is feeling

  280. completely overwhelmed.

  281. He is crying out

  282. to a faithful

  283. God

  284. who now,

  285. when David seems to need him

  286. more than ever,

  287. seems to be silent.

  288. Let's look at verses 12 to 16.

  289. Many bulls surround me.

  290. Strong bulls of fashion

  291. encircle me.

  292. Roaring lions

  293. tearing their prey

  294. open their mouths

  295. wide against me.

  296. I am poured out like water

  297. and all my bones

  298. are out of joint.

  299. My heart

  300. has turned to wax.

  301. It has melted away

  302. within me.

  303. My strength

  304. is dried up

  305. like a potsherd

  306. and my tongue

  307. sticks to the roof

  308. of my mouth.

  309. You lay me

  310. in the dust of death.

  311. Dogs have surrounded me.

  312. A band of evil men

  313. has encircled me.

  314. They have pierced

  315. my hands

  316. and my feet.

  317. I don't think

  318. this literally means

  319. that David is surrounded

  320. by wild animals.

  321. But we get the feeling

  322. a little bit like

  323. David is a gladiator

  324. in a ring

  325. where everybody

  326. just wants to see him killed.

  327. David sees his only outcome

  328. as being destroyed.

  329. Death.

  330. The obvious thing

  331. at this stage

  332. is to just give up,

  333. isn't it?

  334. Reject God

  335. and take his chances

  336. with the wild animals

  337. who want to kill him.

  338. But what does David do?

  339. Let's read on.

  340. Verses 19 to 21.

  341. But you, O Lord,

  342. be not far off.

  343. O my strength,

  344. come quickly to help me.

  345. Deliver my life

  346. from the sword,

  347. my precious life

  348. from the power

  349. of the dogs.

  350. Rescue me

  351. from the mouth

  352. of the lions.

  353. Save me

  354. from the horns

  355. of the wild oxen.

  356. He asks God

  357. for help,

  358. for deliverance,

  359. for rescue.

  360. How can David

  361. possibly ask God

  362. for help

  363. when he has no reason

  364. at this stage

  365. to believe

  366. that he is even there?

  367. David is a man

  368. in desperate times,

  369. but he is also

  370. a man

  371. of very deep

  372. and very real faith.

  373. Turn with me,

  374. please,

  375. to Hebrews

    Hebrews 11 chapter mention

  376. chapter 11.

  377. Somebody get the page

  378. because they shouted out.

  379. 12.09.

  380. 12.09.

  381. 12.09.

  382. 12.09.

  383. 12.09.

  384. So the writer here

  385. in Hebrews

  386. is describing faith

  387. and he says,

  388. now faith

  389. is being sure

  390. of what we hope for

  391. and certain

  392. of what we do not see.

  393. This is what the ancients

  394. were commended for.

  395. And then the rest

  396. of the chapter

  397. in Hebrews

  398. gives us examples

  399. of people of faith

  400. in the past

  401. in difficult times

  402. including David.

  403. And then we get

  404. to the end

  405. in verse 9,

  406. 39,

  407. where it concludes,

  408. These were all

  409. commended for their faith,

  410. yet none of them

  411. received what

  412. had been promised.

  413. It is with this faith

  414. which goes against

  415. everything logical

  416. at times

  417. that David continues

  418. in the psalm

  419. praising God.

  420. Let's look at

  421. a few examples

  422. of that.

  423. Verse 24.

  424. For he has not

  425. despised or disdained

  426. the suffering

  427. of the afflicted one.

  428. He has not

  429. hidden his face

  430. from him

  431. but has listened

  432. to his cry for help.

  433. It's a direct response

  434. to his initial cry

  435. of anguish

  436. in verses 1 and 2.

  437. Do you think

  438. David has been released

  439. from his suffering

  440. at this point?

  441. I don't think so.

  442. But here David

  443. is looking

  444. to a future hope.

  445. Head down to

  446. verse 26.

  447. The poor will eat

  448. and be satisfied.

  449. They who seek

  450. the Lord

  451. will praise him.

  452. May your hearts

  453. live forever.

  454. Again,

  455. David is speaking

  456. of the assurance

  457. that he has

  458. of a future

  459. where there will be

  460. satisfaction

  461. and plenty.

  462. In verse 31,

  463. they will proclaim

  464. his righteousness

  465. to a people

  466. yet unborn

  467. for he has done it.

  468. This speaks

  469. of the hope

  470. that David has

  471. that future generations

  472. will not only

  473. hear about the Lord

  474. but they in turn

  475. will proclaim it.

  476. Their faith

  477. will be such

  478. that they will be

  479. telling others

  480. about this faithful God.

  481. In this context,

  482. David's faith

  483. is incredible

  484. because it was

  485. always looking forward

  486. to a future hope.

  487. with only the experience

  488. of God's faithfulness

  489. to him

  490. and to his forefathers

  491. behind him.

  492. Abraham had been

  493. promised great things

  494. back in Genesis

  495. and as we journey

  496. through the Old Testament

  497. we hear of leaders

  498. trying to lead

  499. God's people

  500. to God's kingdom

  501. but that kingdom

  502. was never reached

  503. and here we have

  504. King David

  505. in a bad way

  506. but yet is still

  507. praising God.

  508. Where is this kingdom

  509. that David hopes for?

  510. Where is this kingdom?

  511. Where as verse 26 says

  512. the poor will eat

  513. and be satisfied.

  514. Where as verse 27 says

  515. all the families

  516. of the nations

  517. will bow down

  518. before the Lord.

  519. And verse 29

  520. where the rich

  521. will feast

  522. and worship

  523. and all who go down

  524. to the dust

  525. or the poor

  526. will kneel before him.

  527. Verse 24 again

  528. reminds us

  529. that God

  530. has not been silent

  531. but has heard

  532. the cry for help.

  533. God hears the prayers

  534. of the faithful

  535. and answers them

  536. just not always

  537. how he would like

  538. them answered.

  539. He sent his son Jesus

  540. to be a man

  541. like David

  542. who would suffer

  543. like David.

  544. Let's look at the psalm

  545. again in verse 6

  546. and let's look at it

  547. from Jesus' point of view.

  548. Jesus was hated.

  549. Jesus was mocked

  550. and insulted

  551. in verse 7.

  552. He was surrounded

  553. by mobs

  554. wanting to kill him

  555. like the imagery

  556. in verses 11 to 13.

  557. In verse 15

  558. his strength too

  559. was dried up

  560. like a fragment

  561. of old pottery.

  562. That's what a potchard

  563. is archaeologically speaking.

  564. I hope that's correct

  565. Juergen.

  566. Jesus too

  567. was left to die

  568. and saw his clothes

  569. divided up

  570. by his executioners.

  571. Jesus

  572. God's own son

  573. Christ the king

  574. would cry out

  575. to God

  576. just like in verse 1

  577. My God

  578. my God

  579. why have you forsaken me?

  580. And it would appear

  581. that God

  582. didn't hear him

  583. or answer him

  584. because Jesus died.

  585. And that's where

  586. the twist is.

  587. That's where the paradox is.

  588. the apparently

  589. contradictory statement

  590. it is here on the cross

  591. on which Jesus died

  592. that God answers

  593. our cry for help.

  594. We have seen

  595. the power of the cross.

  596. We have heard

  597. the testimony

  598. of the lives

  599. that have been changed

  600. by faith in Christ Jesus

  601. throughout the New Testament.

  602. How much more faith

  603. should we have

  604. than David?

  605. We know how God

  606. has heard our cry for help.

  607. David's hope

  608. was not just for

  609. immediate protection.

  610. He was looking

  611. at the bigger picture.

  612. Verse 26

  613. Lives

  614. or hearts

  615. that live forever.

  616. David, yes,

  617. is in a bad way

  618. but still

  619. he remembers

  620. God's faithfulness

  621. and is urging others

  622. to acknowledge him.

  623. David's predicament

  624. and the faith

  625. he showed

  626. in it

  627. eventually results

  628. in many people

  629. having faith

  630. in the Lord.

  631. Jesus' suffering

  632. and death

  633. leads to many people

  634. being saved

  635. from eternal death

  636. and separation

  637. from himself.

  638. in the midst

  639. of our toughest trials

  640. when we feel

  641. our world

  642. is falling in around us

  643. we too

  644. can have hope

  645. that God

  646. will use it

  647. to bring many people

  648. to himself.

  649. It's a counter-cultural hope

  650. that says

  651. that God

  652. is in control.

  653. The God

  654. who gave us life

  655. verses 9 and 10

  656. is in control

  657. whether our fear

  658. is cancer

  659. or MS

  660. or car crashes

  661. or poverty

  662. or just the unknown

  663. we all fear death.

  664. My friend

  665. and his son

  666. fear death.

  667. Jesus

  668. when he said

  669. my God

  670. my God

  671. why have you

  672. forsaken me

  673. he feared death

  674. but it is

  675. at that very moment

  676. in time

  677. when he was

  678. hanging on the cross

  679. that death

  680. lost its fear.

  681. John chapter 19

    John 19:31

  682. verse 31

  683. says

  684. it is finished

  685. Jesus' words

  686. on the cross.

  687. Psalm 22

    Psalms 22:31

  688. verse 31

  689. says

  690. he has done it

  691. because it was then

  692. that Jesus died

  693. so that we don't

  694. have to.

  695. We can have hope

  696. if we're trusting

  697. in the Lord Jesus.

  698. There is light

  699. at the end of the tunnel

  700. and it's not

  701. an oncoming train.

  702. Verse 24

  703. again says

  704. he has not

  705. despised

  706. or disdained

  707. the suffering

  708. of the afflicted one.

  709. He has not

  710. hidden his face

  711. from him

  712. but has listened

  713. to his cry

  714. for help.

  715. If you are here

  716. today

  717. and you do not

  718. have faith

  719. in Christ

  720. then there is

  721. no reason

  722. to have hope.

  723. There is not

  724. the security

  725. or the promise

  726. of eternity

  727. with Christ.

  728. Only the Bible

  729. is promise

  730. of separation

  731. from him.

  732. But if you do

  733. have faith

  734. in him

  735. then you are

  736. still going

  737. to suffer.

  738. Sometimes it

  739. might be only

  740. short term

  741. sometimes it

  742. might be

  743. lifelong

  744. suffering.

  745. But if we

  746. have faith

  747. then we know

  748. that Christ

  749. has been there

  750. before.

  751. That doesn't

  752. make our pain

  753. any less real

  754. but it gives us

  755. hope that one

  756. day it will

  757. end.

  758. How do we

  759. like David

  760. turn our despair

  761. into praise?

  762. We pray

  763. and as we pray

  764. we remind

  765. ourselves of

  766. God's faithfulness

  767. in the past.

  768. we remember

  769. that he sent

  770. his son Jesus

  771. as an answer

  772. to our cries

  773. for help.

  774. Suffering

  775. will come.

  776. Some of it

  777. may not be

  778. relieved

  779. this side

  780. of eternity

  781. for either

  782. believers

  783. or those

  784. who don't

  785. believe.

  786. But we

  787. like David

  788. in verse 22

  789. where he says

  790. I will

  791. declare

  792. your name

  793. to my

  794. brothers

  795. in the

  796. congregation

  797. I will

  798. praise you.

  799. We too

  800. need to

  801. declare

  802. his name

  803. to our

  804. neighbours

  805. and tell

  806. them about

  807. the light

  808. at the end

  809. of the tunnel.

  810. Not just

  811. agree with

  812. their grumbling

  813. about the

  814. state of the

  815. world

  816. or their

  817. own

  818. situation

  819. but point

  820. them back

  821. to the

  822. light.

  823. Some

  824. tunnels

  825. may be

  826. longer

  827. than others

  828. but the

  829. light

  830. is eternity

  831. with our

  832. Lord Jesus

  833. Christ.

  834. Are you

  835. going to

  836. turn your

  837. despair

  838. into praise?

  839. Where do

  840. you have

  841. your hope?

  842. Let us

  843. pray.

  844. Father God

  845. thank you

  846. that we

  847. can have

  848. hope

  849. and faith

  850. in you.

  851. Thank you

  852. that you

  853. hear our

  854. cries for

  855. help

  856. and that

  857. you

  858. haven't

  859. ignored

  860. us.

  861. Thank you

  862. that you

  863. sent your

  864. son Jesus

  865. to live

  866. like us

  867. and to

  868. suffer

  869. like us

  870. and that

  871. when he

  872. died

  873. he died

  874. in our

  875. place.

  876. Thank you

  877. that when

  878. he rose

  879. again from

  880. the dead

  881. he rose

  882. so that

  883. we can

  884. have hope.

  885. That our

  886. suffering

  887. is known

  888. and experienced

  889. and experienced

  890. and experienced

  891. by you.

  892. Please help

  893. us in times

  894. of rejoicing

  895. and in times

  896. of suffering

  897. to always cry

  898. out to you

  899. honestly

  900. in praise.

  901. Remind us

  902. of how you

  903. have been

  904. faithful in the

  905. past.

  906. Encourage us

  907. that one day

  908. it will end

  909. and convict

  910. us to

  911. tell people

  912. of the

  913. hope

  914. that we

  915. have in

  916. you.

  917. Thank you

  918. for your

  919. faithfulness

  920. and help

  921. us as we

  922. remember it.

  923. In Jesus

  924. name.

  925. Amen.

  926. Amen.
