  1. And Psalm 8, page 546.

  2. O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!

  3. You have set your glory above the heavens.

  4. From the lips of children and infants you have ordained praise,

  5. because of your enemies, to silence the foe and the avenger.

  6. When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers,

  7. the moon and the stars, which you have set in place,

  8. what is man that you are mindful of him, the son of man that you care for him?

  9. You made him little lower than the heavenly beings,

  10. and crowned him with honour and glory.

  11. You made him ruler over the works of your hands.

  12. You put everything under his feet.

  13. All flocks and herds, all the beasts of the field,

  14. the birds of the air and the fish of the sea,

  15. all that swim in the paths of the seas.

  16. O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!

  17. Hebrews 2, verses 5-9, page 1202.

    Hebrews 2:5–9

  18. It is not to angels that he has subjected the world to come,

  19. about which we are speaking.

  20. But there is a place where someone has testified.

  21. What is man that you are mindful of him,

  22. the son of man that you care for him?

  23. You made him a little lower than the angels.

  24. You crowned him with glory and honour,

  25. and put everything under his feet.

  26. In putting everything under him,

  27. God left nothing that is not subject to him.

  28. Yet at present we do not see everything subject to him,

  29. but we see Jesus,

  30. who is made a little lower than the angels,

  31. now crowned with glory and honour because he suffered death,

  32. so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone.

  33. Thank you very much,

  34. Maeve and Graeve.

  35. Bless Ralph to come up now.

  36. This is Ralph coming up.

  37. Ralph is one of our elders here in the church,

  38. and while John is away he is kind of in charge.

  39. We can behave ourselves even, but John is over.

  40. Absolutely.

  41. You don't need me around for that.

  42. Hopefully not.

  43. Okay.

  44. Ralph is going to be speaking to us from Psalm 8.

  45. Just before you speak, Ralph,

  46. will you pray to us?

  47. Sure.

  48. Let's pray.

  49. Lord, again, we just thank you for gathering us here this morning.

  50. We thank you for your word, Lord,

  51. and thank you for the fact that we can have it

  52. and read it freely, Lord,

  53. without any fear of persecution or anything like that, Lord.

  54. We just thank you now for Ralph, Lord,

  55. and pray that you would speak to us through him, Lord.

  56. And pray that you would bless what he has to say to us, Lord,

  57. and what you are going to say through him, Lord.

  58. We just pray that you would anoint him with your Holy Spirit

  59. and us as well, Lord, as we listen to him, Lord.

  60. Again, Lord, we just are so grateful for having people like Ralph in the church, Lord,

  61. who are able to speak from your word,

  62. and we just thank you for that, Lord.

  63. Now, again, we just would ask that you would help us to concentrate, Lord,

  64. and to take in what it is that you want to say to us.

  65. In Jesus' name, amen.

  66. Amen.

  67. Amen.

  68. Good morning, everyone.

  69. Thank you, Ian, for leading this morning

  70. and for fitting in so well with the theme that we're going to look at

  71. from Psalm chapter 8 this morning.

    Psalms 8 chapter mention

  72. I was just really struck by the songs that we were singing,

  73. how appropriate they are when we look and when we delve into Psalm 8,

  74. speaking of the wonder of Christ who came from heaven,

  75. came to earth to be our substitute

  76. and to restore us to our rightful position as God's people.

  77. So we're going to turn, as I said, to Psalm chapter 8, page 546.

    Psalms 8 chapter mention

  78. We're continuing our summer series,

  79. reading through the Psalms together.

  80. Last week, for those who were here,

  81. Ted Kelly reminded us of the death of the Psalms.

  82. And he shared a really helpful little quote from,

  83. or a little idea from Martin Luther,

  84. that the Psalms are really, they're like a little Bible.

  85. And what Luther means is that the Psalms,

  86. they capture the whole story of the Bible.

  87. Jesus used the Psalms to teach his followers all about himself.

  88. The Psalms, they're just full of the promise of Jesus,

  89. God's forever king.

  90. So even though they were written a thousand years before Jesus ever came,

  91. they speak fully of Jesus and who he is

  92. and what he would be like when he came.

  93. So this morning we're going to come to Psalm 8

  94. and we're going to unpack the story of these nine verses together.

  95. And I hope that in unpacking these nine verses of Psalm 8

  96. that we will see the big story of the Bible.

  97. So we're going to do the unfolding,

  98. we're going to do the unpacking in four parts

  99. or four chapters if you like.

  100. The first one is that God shows his glory.

  101. The second thing we're going to see is that God shares his glory.

  102. Thirdly, we shame his glory.

  103. And finally, God saves for his glory.

  104. So this is the storyline as we're going to work through it this morning.

  105. This is just to help us see where we're going

  106. in case you get bogged down in the middle

  107. and wonder if I'm ever going to end over the four-hour sermon.

  108. So like all good stories, in Psalm 8,

  109. we have a beginning, a middle, and an end.

  110. And in this case, where we start and where we're going to finish up

  111. is going to be the same, isn't it, if we look at Psalm 8.

  112. King David gives us two identical bookends

  113. that hold the whole story together.

  114. It's that great phrase, isn't it?

  115. O Lord, our Lord,

  116. how majestic is your name in all the earth.

  117. It's a shout of praise about God

  118. who is described as the Lord, the ruler.

  119. It's speaking of God's name, this phrase, isn't it?

  120. His reputation, if you like.

  121. It's bigger.

  122. It's better than anything else in all of the earth.

  123. And this bookend, it's clearly important to the story of Psalm 8

  124. that we understand this shout of praise,

  125. these bookends from David.

  126. So what do they mean?

  127. How or why should God's name be majestic in all the earth?

  128. We shouldn't take that for granted.

  129. Why is that the case?

  130. And David explains the reason for his praise

  131. by retelling an old, old story.

  132. In fact, he tells us the oldest story,

  133. the story of creation.

  134. Now, just a little aside,

  135. when I speak of the word story,

  136. I don't mean some kind of fairy tale.

  137. I don't mean some kind of embellished retelling

  138. of something that happened in the past.

  139. We routinely tell the little kids,

  140. you know, oh, it's only a story,

  141. you know, and that kind of throwaway phrase.

  142. And we have to be thoughtful and careful

  143. how we speak, not just to our children,

  144. but as we listen to a sermon this morning

  145. and what I say.

  146. So when I say story,

  147. I don't mean a fairy tale.

  148. For the story that we're looking at is a real story,

  149. it's a deep story,

  150. and it's a true story.

  151. One that we can see the truth of

  152. as we look all around us in creation.

  153. So as we look closely,

  154. we see that the main part of Psalm 8

  155. is a poetic retelling, if you like,

  156. of chapters 1 and chapter 2 of Genesis,

  157. the creation account.

  158. So in verse 1,

  159. we read about the heavens and the earth in Psalm 8.

  160. In verse 3,

  161. we're told of really the creation of the sun

  162. and the moon and the stars.

  163. Verse 7 mentions the animals,

  164. the birds and the fish.

  165. And finally,

  166. verse 8 speaks and reminds us of man and woman

  167. being created in God's likeness

  168. who were to rule over the earth.

  169. People were created in the image of God.

  170. Therefore, we can talk about people

  171. being God's image bearers,

  172. those that bear God's image on the earth,

  173. the highlight of creation.

  174. So we can't not read Psalm 8

  175. and hear that echo of the creation story.

  176. The echoes of the wonder

  177. and the glory of the early chapters of Genesis.

  178. And it's from the second part of verse 1

  179. that we get our heading

  180. for the first part of this story

  181. within Psalm 8.

  182. God shows us His glory,

  183. especially as He has established His glory

  184. above the heavens.

  185. And it's true, isn't it,

  186. when we look up at the night sky

  187. that we can see something of the glory of God.

  188. So let us stand with David

  189. as he does in verse 3,

  190. as he considers the heavens,

  191. and look at what he calls

  192. the work of God's fingers.

  193. Picture yourselves,

  194. and this is going to be difficult,

  195. you know, you're from Ireland.

  196. Picture yourselves on a rare cloud-free night

  197. somewhere in West Cork.

  198. One place I always remember is Castle Freak,

  199. you know, the old ruins there

  200. and the beach and stuff,

  201. but kind of away from the light pollution,

  202. looking up at the starry host.

  203. And we might even be tempted

  204. as we look up to kind of touch the stars

  205. or poke at them,

  206. or maybe even we feel like first three

  207. that we can, you know,

  208. we can move them around

  209. and set them in place.

  210. Well, if you've ever been tempted to do that,

  211. to set the stars in their place,

  212. consider this.

  213. The earth, which is where we all are right now,

  214. is about, around the outside,

  215. the circumference is about 40,000 kilometres.

  216. So if you wanted to travel

  217. just around the earth once in a jumbo jet,

  218. which is, you know,

  219. about as fast as you could realistically go,

  220. it would take you about four days,

  221. non-stop,

  222. just to get around the earth once.

  223. That's just the earth.

  224. And it's actually a midget compared to the sun

  225. and to the stars, isn't it?

  226. The earth might be 40,000 kilometres

  227. around the outside,

  228. but the sun is 4,400,000 kilometres

  229. around the outside of our sun.

  230. So if you want to take the same trip

  231. and do a tour just around the sun,

  232. just once,

  233. it's going to take you about 400 days

  234. to complete that journey.

  235. Of course,

  236. to get from the earth to the sun

  237. is 150 million kilometres,

  238. so it'll take you about 50 years

  239. to get there anyway in the first place.

  240. So after we've conquered the earth,

  241. going around at once

  242. and conquered the sun

  243. going around at once,

  244. then we have to consider

  245. the scale of the universe.

  246. Now, it's only an estimate

  247. and a guess as much as we can,

  248. but there are about 10 to the power

  249. of 21 stars in the universe.

  250. So that's that scientific notation.

  251. What that means

  252. is there are 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 stars

  253. that we kind of know about in the universe.

  254. Of course, we don't really know

  255. how big the universe is.

  256. So after we've, you know,

  257. had a look at the sun

  258. and had a look at the earth,

  259. we have a lot more to do.

  260. One followed by 21 zeros after it.

  261. And do you know what?

  262. Our sun is actually quite small

  263. compared to some of the other stars

  264. that are out there.

  265. In fact, it's a tiny little midget of a sun.

  266. There's some great diagrams

  267. and pictures and videos on the internet

  268. that you can look up

  269. that'll give you an idea of the scale.

  270. But I have a picture here of one of them.

  271. So this is the largest known star.

  272. It may not be the biggest one

  273. because there are gas clouds in the Milky Way

  274. and we can't see everything.

  275. But it's called VY Canis Majoris.

  276. Okay?

  277. And that's our,

  278. this little dot here is our sun.

  279. I can't really see it well,

  280. but that's kind of a curve down here

  281. of this little bit.

  282. That's our sun in comparison

  283. to the largest known star.

  284. You would need about 7 billion suns

  285. to make up one of these stars.

  286. And this probably isn't even

  287. the biggest one that's out there.

  288. To do a little tour

  289. around the outside of this one,

  290. four days for the earth,

  291. 400 days for the sun,

  292. 11,000 years.

  293. Just to take a trip around this one once.

  294. So I think we can see

  295. from the universe

  296. and from this psalm

  297. that the heavens

  298. were created

  299. with vastness and scale

  300. in order to bring glory

  301. to God.

  302. When we look at the beauty

  303. and when we look at the wonder

  304. of the universe,

  305. we are meant to say,

  306. what an awesome,

  307. what a mighty God

  308. must have created

  309. all of this.

  310. It's no bother to God

  311. to put

  312. a thousand,

  313. million,

  314. million,

  315. million stars

  316. in their place,

  317. even if they are

  318. 7 billion times bigger

  319. than our own sun.

  320. When we look,

  321. we say,

  322. you know,

  323. we can barely imagine

  324. the true size and scale

  325. of our own sun,

  326. yet alone consider

  327. all the other stars.

  328. How much more beautiful,

  329. how much more perfect

  330. must the creator

  331. of all of this be?

  332. That's why God

  333. has created

  334. such a wonderful universe,

  335. to show himself.

  336. Have you ever wondered,

  337. have you ever had that wonder,

  338. why the universe

  339. is made so big?

  340. Well,

  341. John Piper gives

  342. a very good explanation,

  343. I think,

  344. for the reason

  345. for such splendor

  346. in creation.

  347. This is what he says.

  348. Do people go

  349. to the Grand Canyon

  350. to increase

  351. their self-esteem?

  352. Probably not.

  353. This is,

  354. at least,

  355. a hint

  356. that the deepest joys

  357. in life

  358. come not from

  359. savoring the self,

  360. but from seeing splendor.

  361. And in the end,

  362. even the Grand Canyon

  363. will not do.

  364. we were made

  365. to enjoy God.

  366. God has created

  367. such grand canyons

  368. in the heavens

  369. for us

  370. so that we would look

  371. for the glory

  372. that is above the heavens

  373. and there

  374. that we would find him.

  375. And in finding him,

  376. we then find

  377. that we are made

  378. to enjoy him.

  379. This is the essence

  380. of verse 1,

  381. isn't it?

  382. You have set

  383. your glory

  384. above the heavens.

  385. So given the glory

  386. of God

  387. seen in creation,

  388. is it any wonder then

  389. that verse 4

  390. of Psalm chapter 8

    Psalms 8 chapter mention

  391. follows after verse 3?

  392. When I look

  393. at your heavens,

  394. the work of your fingers,

  395. the moon and the stars

  396. which you have set

  397. in place,

  398. what is man

  399. that you are mindful

  400. of him,

  401. and the son of man

  402. that you care

  403. for him.

  404. It has to be

  405. our natural response,

  406. doesn't it?

  407. An overwhelming

  408. sense of smallness

  409. within ourselves

  410. in such a vast creation.

  411. What indeed

  412. is special

  413. about man

  414. that God

  415. would even

  416. take notice

  417. of him?

  418. And the answer

  419. given for us

  420. is verses 5

  421. and 6

  422. which form part 2

  423. of our Psalm 8 story.

  424. God

  425. shares

  426. his glory.

  427. God

  428. has chosen

  429. to create

  430. man and woman

  431. and in doing so

  432. allows us

  433. to share

  434. in his glory.

  435. And

  436. before we

  437. delve into that,

  438. I think it's

  439. important that we

  440. first realise

  441. that God

  442. didn't have to

  443. create.

  444. God didn't have

  445. to make us.

  446. God was fully

  447. complete

  448. in eternity

  449. past

  450. without the creation.

  451. you see,

  452. within the Godhead,

  453. the Father,

  454. the Son and the Holy Spirit

  455. shared and gave glory

  456. one to another.

  457. And it was out of this

  458. overflowing love

  459. that they then

  460. created people

  461. in their own image

  462. and allow those people,

  463. you and me,

  464. to enter into a relationship

  465. with God

  466. so that we may share

  467. and take part

  468. in God's glory,

  469. God's sharing

  470. of his glory.

  471. You see,

  472. God is

  473. a loving person.

  474. He invites others

  475. to share his glory.

  476. And he has given us,

  477. his people,

  478. a privileged position

  479. to rule over

  480. his creation

  481. and has crowned us,

  482. as it says,

  483. with glory

  484. and honour.

  485. So this is where

  486. scripture puts

  487. us in relation

  488. to the rest

  489. of creation

  490. as God's

  491. special

  492. image bearers

  493. and rulers

  494. on the earth.

  495. Now if we

  496. ask the question

  497. of verse 4

  498. to an atheist

  499. or a materialist,

  500. someone that

  501. rejects the idea

  502. of God,

  503. what is man

  504. that you are

  505. mindful of him?

  506. Well their answer

  507. has to be nothing.

  508. There's nothing

  509. special about man.

  510. Those who reject

  511. the idea of a creator

  512. God must

  513. conclude that man

  514. simply

  515. does not matter.

  516. Compared to the size

  517. and to the age

  518. and the scale

  519. of the universe,

  520. man is nothing

  521. more than

  522. a random

  523. collection

  524. of a small

  525. number of

  526. atoms that

  527. decide to come

  528. together for a

  529. short while

  530. and after 80

  531. years the atoms

  532. go their

  533. separate ways.

  534. To avoid the

  535. evidence for God

  536. people begin to

  537. build arguments,

  538. don't they,

  539. and justifications

  540. as to why God

  541. must not exist

  542. or cannot exist.

  543. What kind of a

  544. God is that

  545. who creates

  546. people to

  547. bow down

  548. and worship him

  549. in constant

  550. praise?

  551. He must be

  552. very needy

  553. or selfish

  554. or some

  555. kind of

  556. egotistical

  557. kind of

  558. God.

  559. Who would

  560. want to

  561. know a

  562. God like

  563. that if

  564. that's what

  565. he's about,

  566. making robot

  567. creatures to

  568. bow down

  569. and worship

  570. him?

  571. What they

  572. are doing

  573. in constructing

  574. those arguments

  575. and working

  576. these things

  577. through is

  578. choosing to

  579. ignore

  580. scripture and

  581. the evidence

  582. of scripture

  583. and verses

  584. like 5 and 6

  585. in Psalm

    Psalms 8 chapter mention

  586. chapter 8

  587. where we

  588. see that

  589. God is

  590. unselfish

  591. and loving.

  592. God shares

  593. with us

  594. his glory.

  595. And as we

  596. saw something

  597. in the quote

  598. from John

  599. Piper,

  600. it is as we

  601. enter into

  602. beholding God's

  603. glory that we

  604. are most

  605. satisfied in

  606. God.

  607. And as we

  608. are most

  609. satisfied in

  610. God,

  611. God is

  612. indeed most

  613. glorified by

  614. his creation.

  615. Now I

  616. think verses

  617. 5 and 6

  618. have a lot

  619. of implications

  620. for us if

  621. we think them

  622. through and

  623. a lot of

  624. application.

  625. Really we

  626. are responsible

  627. as God's

  628. image bearers

  629. to represent

  630. God on

  631. earth.

  632. So how we

  633. behave on

  634. earth,

  635. whether for

  636. good or

  637. ill,

  638. reflects

  639. ultimately on

  640. the glory of

  641. God.

  642. And someone

  643. put it like

  644. this.

  645. I think

  646. this is a

  647. challenge

  648. certainly to

  649. me.

  650. What would

  651. your church

  652. here in

  653. Caragallion and

  654. the worldwide

  655. church look

  656. like if

  657. everyone was

  658. as committed

  659. as you are?

  660. If everyone

  661. gave and

  662. served and

  663. prayed exactly

  664. like you,

  665. would the

  666. church be

  667. healthy and

  668. empowered or

  669. would it be

  670. weak and

  671. listless?

  672. Tough words

  673. to consider,

  674. isn't it?

  675. How does

  676. your life,

  677. how do your

  678. decisions,

  679. how do your

  680. priorities,

  681. reflect on

  682. God and

  683. his glory?

  684. I don't

  685. know about

  686. you,

  687. but trying

  688. to measure

  689. myself up

  690. to what

  691. it says

  692. in verses

  693. 5 and

  694. 6 and

  695. our role,

  696. it leaves

  697. me with a

  698. slightly

  699. empty

  700. feeling.

  701. And so

  702. I can look

  703. again at

  704. the question

  705. in verse

  706. 4,

  707. and it's

  708. now a

  709. little bit

  710. more personal,

  711. isn't it?

  712. It's a

  713. different

  714. life.

  715. why should

  716. God care

  717. about me?

  718. I fail

  719. to live

  720. up to the

  721. honour and

  722. glory that

  723. God has

  724. given to

  725. me.

  726. There's an

  727. unspoken

  728. tension that's

  729. bubbled

  730. throughout

  731. Psalm 8.

  732. For all

  733. its beautifully

  734. written words,

  735. something just,

  736. it just doesn't

  737. sit right with

  738. us as we

  739. read it.

  740. The creation

  741. order that we

  742. read of in

  743. Psalm 8,

  744. the creation

  745. account that

  746. we read of

  747. in Genesis

  748. 1 and

  749. 2,

  750. it's just

  751. no longer

  752. reflected in

  753. our world,

  754. is it?

  755. We read

  756. in verses

  757. 7 and

  758. verses 8

  759. about ruling

  760. really over

  761. the beasts of

  762. the field,

  763. the flocks and

  764. the herds,

  765. the birds of

  766. the air,

  767. everything under

  768. our feet.

  769. But it doesn't

  770. sound like it's

  771. speaking of our

  772. planet,

  773. on planet

  774. earth,

  775. if we think

  776. we're doing

  777. well,

  778. if we can

  779. get Fido

  780. the dog to

  781. sit.

  782. But I'll

  783. tell you for

  784. nothing,

  785. no shark

  786. intent on

  787. eating you

  788. is going to

  789. swim away

  790. because you

  791. tell him,

  792. well,

  793. actually I'm

  794. God's image

  795. bearer,

  796. bit of respect

  797. here,

  798. you know,

  799. don't be

  800. biting my

  801. leg.

  802. You know,

  803. we really,

  804. we don't see

  805. this,

  806. do we,

  807. this kind of

  808. creation order

  809. and this

  810. kind of

  811. rule as

  812. it's described

  813. here.

  814. And if we

  815. consider it,

  816. then we

  817. remember,

  818. don't we?

  819. Genesis

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  820. chapter 3

  821. always follows

  822. Genesis

    Genesis 1 chapter mention

  823. chapters 1

  824. and chapters

  825. 2.

  826. You see,

  827. Genesis 1

  828. and 2

  829. are the

  830. high point

  831. of the

  832. created

  833. universe,

  834. man and

  835. woman living

  836. in perfect

  837. harmony with

  838. God and

  839. each sharing

  840. and bringing

  841. glory one

  842. to another.

  843. But then

  844. comes chapter

  845. 3 where we

  846. read about

  847. the fall

  848. of man and

  849. bang,

  850. it's all

  851. ripped apart,

  852. it's all

  853. torn apart.

  854. Sin enters,

  855. shame

  856. enters,

  857. man,

  858. man is

  859. corrupted

  860. and blinded

  861. by sin.

  862. So instead

  863. of seeking

  864. our happiness

  865. in the

  866. creator,

  867. we turn

  868. to the

  869. creation

  870. to find

  871. ultimate

  872. joy and

  873. happiness.

  874. This is

  875. part 3

  876. of the

  877. story of

  878. Psalm 8.

  879. We no

  880. longer want

  881. to see

  882. God's

  883. glory,

  884. we no

  885. longer share

  886. in his

  887. glory,

  888. instead,

  889. we,

  890. his

  891. creatures,

  892. we bring

  893. shame to

  894. his glory.

  895. Now Paul

  896. in Romans

    Romans 1 chapter mention

  897. chapter 1

  898. in the

  899. New Testament

  900. puts it

  901. better than

  902. I ever

  903. could,

  904. and I

  905. think we

  906. would do

  907. well to

  908. consider his

  909. words this

  910. morning.

  911. They're up on

  912. the screen

  913. so you don't

  914. have to flick

  915. over to

  916. Romans 1.

  917. This is what

  918. Paul says,

  919. and I think he

  920. captures this

  921. very well.

  922. For since the

  923. creation of the

  924. world,

  925. God's invisible

  926. qualities,

  927. his eternal

  928. power,

  929. and divine

  930. nature have

  931. been clearly

  932. seen,

  933. being understood

  934. from what has

  935. been made,

  936. so that men

  937. are without

  938. excuse.

  939. For although

  940. they knew

  941. God,

  942. they neither

  943. glorified him

  944. as God,

  945. nor gave

  946. thanks to

  947. him,

  948. but their

  949. thinking became

  950. futile,

  951. and their

  952. foolish hearts

  953. were darkened.

  954. Although they

  955. came to be

  956. wise,

  957. they became

  958. fools,

  959. and this is

  960. the key.

  961. They exchanged

  962. the glory of

  963. the immortal

  964. God for

  965. images made

  966. to look like

  967. mortal man,

  968. and birds,

  969. and animals,

  970. and reptiles.

  971. What shame

  972. we bring

  973. on God's

  974. glory,

  975. by exchanging

  976. it for the

  977. glory of

  978. created things.

  979. We turn

  980. what are good

  981. things in

  982. creation

  983. into the

  984. ultimate thing.

  985. We raise

  986. it up,

  987. and in doing

  988. so,

  989. we displace

  990. God and

  991. take him

  992. away from

  993. his rightful

  994. place.

  995. It's like

  996. even though

  997. we reject

  998. God,

  999. and we

  1000. reject

  1001. praising God

  1002. and glorifying

  1003. him,

  1004. we still

  1005. feel compelled

  1006. within our

  1007. hearts,

  1008. because we're

  1009. made in

  1010. God's image,

  1011. to praise

  1012. something,

  1013. or to glorify

  1014. something,

  1015. or to find

  1016. something,

  1017. to find some

  1018. meaning.

  1019. So we spend

  1020. our lives

  1021. looking to

  1022. heap praise

  1023. on created

  1024. things,

  1025. instead of

  1026. heaping praise

  1027. on the

  1028. creator.

  1029. You know,

  1030. it's very

  1031. simple,

  1032. our lives

  1033. should shout

  1034. out,

  1035. look at

  1036. the Lord,

  1037. but quite

  1038. often in our

  1039. lives,

  1040. they shout

  1041. out,

  1042. look at

  1043. me,

  1044. look at

  1045. my great

  1046. job,

  1047. see my

  1048. wonderful

  1049. kids,

  1050. look at

  1051. my impressive

  1052. DVD collection,

  1053. look at

  1054. my nice

  1055. car,

  1056. look at

  1057. how righteous

  1058. a Christian

  1059. I am.

  1060. What an

  1061. insult,

  1062. what an

  1063. insult to

  1064. his generous

  1065. God,

  1066. who has

  1067. shared his

  1068. glory with

  1069. us,

  1070. and given

  1071. us rule

  1072. over his

  1073. creation.

  1074. Chapter

  1075. 3,

  1076. or part

  1077. 3 of

  1078. our story

  1079. of Psalm

  1080. 8.

  1081. Is us

  1082. shaming

  1083. his glory.

  1084. It is the

  1085. hidden story,

  1086. the hidden

  1087. part of

  1088. Psalm 8

  1089. that bubbles

  1090. under the

  1091. surface.

  1092. For all

  1093. the praise

  1094. that's in

  1095. Psalm 8,

  1096. all the

  1097. wonder of

  1098. creation that

  1099. we've thought

  1100. about is

  1101. spoiled by

  1102. us,

  1103. by our

  1104. rebellion,

  1105. by our

  1106. selfish

  1107. living.

  1108. What hope

  1109. for God's

  1110. creation with

  1111. sinful man

  1112. at the

  1113. helm?

  1114. I don't

  1115. know,

  1116. will we

  1117. ever make

  1118. it to

  1119. verse 9

  1120. and to

  1121. our final

  1122. bookend

  1123. of this

  1124. story?

  1125. But,

  1126. there is

  1127. good news,

  1128. there is

  1129. hope.

  1130. We can

  1131. actually read

  1132. Psalm 8

  1133. in one of

  1134. two ways.

  1135. the main

  1136. idea,

  1137. I think

  1138. clearly that

  1139. the writer

  1140. David has

  1141. in mind

  1142. in Psalm

  1143. 8 is the

  1144. creation

  1145. account in

  1146. Genesis,

  1147. isn't it?

  1148. I think

  1149. that's very,

  1150. very clear.

  1151. But there

  1152. is another

  1153. author of

  1154. Psalm 8

  1155. besides King

  1156. David,

  1157. and that

  1158. is the

  1159. Holy Spirit.

  1160. So,

  1161. Psalm 8

  1162. also speaks

  1163. of a new

  1164. creation,

  1165. not just the

  1166. old creation

  1167. in Genesis

  1168. 1 and 2,

  1169. but of a new

  1170. creation,

  1171. where order

  1172. is restored

  1173. and people

  1174. once again

  1175. live under

  1176. God's glory

  1177. as his

  1178. image bearers

  1179. and as his

  1180. people.

  1181. And it

  1182. was a

  1183. thousand years,

  1184. took a

  1185. thousand years

  1186. after Psalm

  1187. 8 was

  1188. written,

  1189. that another

  1190. writer picked

  1191. up the

  1192. plot line

  1193. of Psalm

  1194. 8 and

  1195. filled in

  1196. for us the

  1197. final chapter

  1198. that will get

  1199. us to

  1200. verse 9.

  1201. And it was

  1202. the reading

  1203. in Hebrews

  1204. that Graham

  1205. read,

  1206. and we're

  1207. going to

  1208. turn to

  1209. Hebrews.

  1210. If you

  1211. want to

  1212. keep a

  1213. finger in

  1214. Psalm 8

  1215. you can.

  1216. It would

  1217. be good

  1218. to turn

  1219. to Hebrews

    Hebrews 2 chapter mention

  1220. chapter 2,

  1221. that's on

  1222. page 1202.

  1223. And if we

  1224. read verses

  1225. 5 to

  1226. 8,

  1227. we'll see

  1228. this plot

  1229. line being

  1230. picked up.

  1231. Now to

  1232. give us

  1233. some basic

  1234. context as

  1235. we jump

  1236. into the

  1237. New Testament

  1238. and jump

  1239. into Hebrews

    Hebrews 2 chapter mention

  1240. chapter 2,

  1241. the writer

  1242. of Hebrews

  1243. has been

  1244. arguing that

  1245. God's

  1246. Son,

  1247. Jesus,

  1248. is superior

  1249. to the

  1250. angels.

  1251. So we

  1252. hear about

  1253. angels

  1254. we

  1255. mentioned.

  1256. And now

  1257. he's

  1258. pointing out

  1259. or arguing

  1260. that it

  1261. is destined

  1262. for man

  1263. to rule

  1264. once more

  1265. in a new

  1266. earth.

  1267. So verse

  1268. 5.

  1269. It is not

  1270. to angels

  1271. that he

  1272. has subjected

  1273. the world

  1274. to come,

  1275. about which

  1276. we are

  1277. speaking,

  1278. but there

  1279. is a place

  1280. where someone

  1281. has testified.

  1282. What is

  1283. man that

  1284. you are

  1285. mindful of

  1286. him,

  1287. the son

  1288. of man

  1289. that you

  1290. care for

  1291. him?

  1292. You

  1293. made him

  1294. a little

  1295. lower than

  1296. the angels,

  1297. you crowned

  1298. him with

  1299. glory and

  1300. honour and

  1301. put everything

  1302. under his

  1303. feet.

  1304. In putting

  1305. everything under

  1306. him,

  1307. God left

  1308. nothing that

  1309. is not

  1310. subject to

  1311. him.

  1312. Yet,

  1313. at present,

  1314. we do not

  1315. see everything

  1316. subject to

  1317. him.

  1318. man.

  1319. So the

  1320. writer of

  1321. Hebrews is

  1322. picking up

  1323. the idea

  1324. from Psalm

  1325. 8 of a

  1326. new creation

  1327. where man

  1328. once again

  1329. is ruling

  1330. over everything,

  1331. order restored.

  1332. But,

  1333. he has to

  1334. admit,

  1335. doesn't he,

  1336. that yet,

  1337. at present,

  1338. we do not

  1339. see everything

  1340. subject to

  1341. man,

  1342. so don't

  1343. try commanding

  1344. the sharks.

  1345. So if we

  1346. cannot see

  1347. this new

  1348. creation now,

  1349. where is

  1350. our hope

  1351. for today,

  1352. if it's only

  1353. a future

  1354. thing that's

  1355. far off?

  1356. How do we

  1357. know that

  1358. it's going

  1359. to come

  1360. to pass?

  1361. We're in

  1362. need of a

  1363. B-U-T

  1364. statement.

  1365. And we

  1366. have it in

  1367. verse 9.

  1368. But,

  1369. B-U-T,

  1370. we see

  1371. Jesus,

  1372. who was

  1373. made a

  1374. little lower

  1375. than the

  1376. angels,

  1377. now crowned

  1378. with glory

  1379. and honour

  1380. because he

  1381. suffered death,

  1382. so that by

  1383. the grace

  1384. of God,

  1385. he might

  1386. taste death

  1387. for everyone.

  1388. Jesus

  1389. Christ

  1390. has

  1391. stepped

  1392. in

  1393. to the

  1394. story

  1395. of

  1396. Psalm 8.

  1397. He

  1398. became

  1399. the

  1400. perfect

  1401. man

  1402. that we

  1403. read about

  1404. in Psalm

    Psalms 8:5

  1405. 8,

  1406. verse 5,

  1407. that's

  1408. repeated here

  1409. in Hebrews,

  1410. that was

  1411. first made

  1412. a little

  1413. lower

  1414. and then

  1415. crowned

  1416. again.

  1417. Jesus,

  1418. he was

  1419. Lord when

  1420. he went

  1421. from heaven

  1422. to earth.

  1423. at that

  1424. point he

  1425. let go

  1426. of the

  1427. display

  1428. of his

  1429. rightful

  1430. glory,

  1431. but later

  1432. Jesus was

  1433. crowned

  1434. with glory

  1435. and honour

  1436. that comes

  1437. from obedience

  1438. to the

  1439. Father.

  1440. And Jesus,

  1441. he was

  1442. obedient

  1443. even to

  1444. death

  1445. on a

  1446. cross,

  1447. and Jesus,

  1448. he tasted

  1449. death for us

  1450. all,

  1451. so that we

  1452. can be

  1453. saved

  1454. for

  1455. his

  1456. glory.

  1457. And what

  1458. we read

  1459. in Hebrews

    Hebrews 2 chapter mention

  1460. chapter 2

  1461. is the

  1462. wonderful way

  1463. that the

  1464. tension

  1465. that's there

  1466. in Psalm

  1467. 8,

  1468. that's sitting

  1469. under the

  1470. surface,

  1471. is resolved

  1472. and brought

  1473. to a

  1474. close.

  1475. God

  1476. himself

  1477. steps into

  1478. his creation

  1479. to restore

  1480. order and

  1481. bring glory

  1482. back to

  1483. himself.

  1484. And he

  1485. does this

  1486. by sending

  1487. his one

  1488. and only

  1489. son,

  1490. who came

  1491. to represent

  1492. us as the

  1493. perfect image

  1494. bearer.

  1495. He came

  1496. as a man,

  1497. he lived

  1498. as a

  1499. perfect man,

  1500. and Jesus,

  1501. he always

  1502. brought glory

  1503. and honour

  1504. back to

  1505. God the

  1506. Father.

  1507. God's

  1508. glory

  1509. is not

  1510. just way

  1511. out there

  1512. above the

  1513. heavens,

  1514. but has

  1515. come right

  1516. down to

  1517. the earth.

  1518. God's

  1519. glory was

  1520. born in a

  1521. stable,

  1522. God's

  1523. glory

  1524. lived with

  1525. all the

  1526. normal

  1527. happiness

  1528. and all

  1529. the

  1530. sadnesses

  1531. that come

  1532. from daily

  1533. life.

  1534. God's

  1535. glory

  1536. suffered

  1537. opposition

  1538. and criticism

  1539. of the

  1540. religious

  1541. leaders,

  1542. but God's

  1543. glory was

  1544. praised

  1545. by the

  1546. children

  1547. and praised

  1548. by the

  1549. infants

  1550. to shame

  1551. the foe

  1552. and to

  1553. shame

  1554. the avenger.

  1555. As it

  1556. says in

  1557. Psalm 8

    Psalms 8:2

  1558. verse 2,

  1559. God's

  1560. glory

  1561. suffered

  1562. rejection

  1563. and suffered

  1564. a cruel

  1565. death on

  1566. the cross

  1567. in place

  1568. of us

  1569. obnoxious

  1570. rebels.

  1571. God's

  1572. glory

  1573. is

  1574. Jesus

  1575. on the

  1576. earth.

  1577. This is

  1578. glory,

  1579. God's

  1580. redemption

  1581. of us

  1582. through the

  1583. cross,

  1584. so that

  1585. we may

  1586. once again

  1587. share

  1588. his honour.

  1589. We

  1590. indeed

  1591. are saved

  1592. for

  1593. his

  1594. glory.

  1595. We

  1596. have a

  1597. privilege

  1598. in this

  1599. age to

  1600. read

  1601. Psalm 8

  1602. because we

  1603. can read

  1604. it in

  1605. both ways,

  1606. can't we?

  1607. We can

  1608. read

  1609. Psalm 8

  1610. and we

  1611. can look

  1612. back at

  1613. Genesis 1

  1614. and 2

  1615. and praise

  1616. God and

  1617. thank him

  1618. for such a

  1619. wonderful

  1620. creation,

  1621. or we

  1622. can read

  1623. it and

  1624. look forward

  1625. to

  1626. Revelation

    Revelation 21 chapter mention

  1627. chapter 21

  1628. and

  1629. Revelation

    Revelation 22 chapter mention

  1630. chapter 22

  1631. and there

  1632. we read

  1633. John

  1634. describing

  1635. for us

  1636. a new

  1637. heaven

  1638. and a

  1639. new

  1640. earth

  1641. and a

  1642. new

  1643. creation

  1644. and a

  1645. new

  1646. order.

  1647. The

  1648. good news

  1649. is the

  1650. bookends

  1651. that we

  1652. spoke

  1653. about

  1654. in

  1655. Psalm

    Psalms 8 chapter mention

  1656. chapter 8

  1657. that lovely

  1658. phrase

  1659. O Lord

  1660. our

  1661. Lord

  1662. how majestic

  1663. is your

  1664. name in

  1665. all the

  1666. earth

  1667. it no

  1668. longer

  1669. needs to

  1670. be

  1671. tarnished

  1672. by our

  1673. failure

  1674. for Christ

  1675. has made

  1676. all things

  1677. new.

  1678. And there's

  1679. a challenge

  1680. we spoke

  1681. about it

  1682. during the

  1683. sermon

  1684. the challenge

  1685. that is there

  1686. from Psalm

  1687. 8

  1688. as to how

  1689. we will

  1690. live

  1691. and it's

  1692. there again

  1693. for us

  1694. will we

  1695. choose to

  1696. bring glory

  1697. to God

  1698. on earth

  1699. by accepting

  1700. Jesus

  1701. will that

  1702. be your

  1703. choice

  1704. or will we

  1705. continue to

  1706. turn our

  1707. back on

  1708. God

  1709. and live

  1710. for the

  1711. glory of

  1712. some

  1713. passing

  1714. thing in

  1715. creation

  1716. that ultimately

  1717. is going to

  1718. be destroyed

  1719. anyway

  1720. because of

  1721. Jesus

  1722. we can finish

  1723. the story of

  1724. Psalm 8

  1725. and get to

  1726. verse 9

  1727. can't we

  1728. and the

  1729. glory of

  1730. God will

  1731. still be

  1732. intact

  1733. O Lord

  1734. our Lord

  1735. how majestic

  1736. is your

  1737. name in

  1738. all the

  1739. earth

  1740. let us

  1741. in

  1742. Karagaline

  1743. compete

  1744. with the

  1745. heavens

  1746. in declaring

  1747. God's

  1748. glory

  1749. here on

  1750. earth

  1751. let's

  1752. pray

  1753. God

  1754. aside

  1755. ton

  1756. to

  1757. let's

  1758. to

  1759. run

  1760. from

  1761. to

  1762. on

  1763. earth

  1764. the

  1765. everyone

  1766. ues

  1767. may

  1768. if

  1769. you

  1770. Oh

  1771. I

  1772. can

  1773. late

  1774. when

  1775. the

  1776. Uhr

  1777. in

  1778. you

  1779. you

  1780. you
