    Romans 2:1–16

  3. and Joe is going to read that for us now.

  4. God's righteous judgment.

  5. You, therefore, have no excuse.

  6. You who pass judgment on someone else, for at whatever point you judge the other, you are condemning yourself,

  7. because you who pass judgment do the same thing.

  8. Now we know that God's judgment against those who do such things is based on truth.

  9. So when you, a mere man, pass judgment on them and yet do the same thing, do you think you will escape God's judgment?

  10. Or do you show contempt for the riches of his kindness, tolerance and patience, not realizing that God's kindness leads you toward repentance?

  11. But because of your stubbornness and your unrepentant heart, you are storing up wrath against yourself for the day of God's wrath,

  12. when his righteous judgment will be revealed.

  13. God will give each person according to what he has done.

  14. To those who by persistence in doing good seek glory, honor and immortality, he will give eternal life.

  15. But for those who are self-seeking and who reject the truth and follow evil, there will be wrath and anger.

  16. There will be trouble and distress for every human being who does evil, first for the Jew, then for the Gentile.

  17. But glory, honor and peace for everyone who does good, first for the Jew, then for the Gentile.

  18. For God does not show favoritism.

  19. All who sin apart from the law will also perish apart from the law.

  20. And all who sin under the law will be judged by the law.

  21. For it is not those who hear the law who are righteous in God's sight,

  22. but it is those who obey the law who will be declared righteous.

  23. Indeed, when Gentiles who do not have the law do by nature things required by the law,

  24. they are a law for themselves, even though they do not have the law.

  25. Since they show that the requirements of the law are written on their hearts,

  26. their consciences also bearing witness,

  27. and their thoughts now accusing, now even defending them.

  28. This will take place on the day when God will judge men's secrets

  29. through Jesus Christ, as my gospel declares.

  30. Thanks very much, Joe.

  31. Well, please keep your Bibles open on that section there.

  32. There are some sheets going around.

  33. If you haven't got one, I think there's some at the front there.

  34. You can take notes.

  35. And there's a pen as well.

  36. If you'd like one of them, you can stick your hand up and we'll get it to you.

  37. We are going through the Book of Romans.

  38. We're starting into Chapter 2.

  39. Yesterday evening, I was at a school reunion,

  40. a 20-year school reunion,

  41. and I was chatting to my friends, a lot of them discovering for the first time

  42. that I was a pastor.

  43. Some of them were quite shocked for the fact that I was doing that.

  44. And I said, well, if you want to know what it's like,

  45. you can always go online and listen to the sermons and have a listen,

  46. and I'd welcome your feedback.

  47. You can get back to me.

  48. And then I remembered what I was actually going to be talking about this morning,

  49. God's judgment.

  50. That's a scary one, isn't it?

  51. I thought, oh dear.

  52. Maybe if they don't listen to that and they listen to something a little bit more lighter,

  53. it might be better.

  54. But nevertheless, it's God's Word,

  55. and we deal with it as these difficult subjects come up.

  56. And, well, we need God's help for this.

  57. So let's pray and ask for God to help us

  58. to get an understanding of these big things.

  59. Let's pray together.

  60. Our Father, we thank you for having your Word in our language,

  61. having it written down that we can read,

  62. having people who can help us to understand it.

  63. But most of all, we need the help of your Holy Spirit.

  64. Because without your Spirit, it's as if we are deaf,

  65. or we are blind to it.

  66. We cannot understand or comprehend it.

  67. So we pray that by your Spirit, you will speak to us,

  68. helping us to grasp these big subjects,

  69. how it applies to our life and the world in which we live.

  70. And we pray that we would take it seriously

  71. and understand its impact.

  72. We pray this in Jesus' name.

  73. Amen.

  74. Amen.

  75. So tell me, are you looking forward to the big day?

  76. We've already had some big days this week.

  77. Last Sunday, Cork won the All-Ireland.

  78. After 20 years, they brought back Sam, the great big cup, back to Cork.

  79. That was a big day, wasn't it?

  80. On Thursday, we celebrated Arthur's Day.

  81. Maybe some of you did anyway.

  82. 250 years of Guinness in Ireland.

  83. That was a big day.

  84. But what's the big day that we're all looking forward to?

  85. For some here, it might be, well, you're starting back to college tomorrow.

  86. It could be a new job.

  87. For some people, it could be their wedding day that they're looking forward to.

  88. What's the big day?

  89. Well, in the Bible, the big day always refers to the day of God's judgment.

  90. Look at verse 6.

  91. It says there, God will give to each person according to what they have done.

  92. Verse 16.

  93. This will take place on the day when God will judge people's secrets through Jesus Christ,

  94. as my gospel declares.

  95. Do you have any secrets?

  96. Something that you did that no one else knows about.

  97. Not even your wife or your husband or your closest friend.

  98. A deeply held secret.

  99. Well, on the day of judgment, nothing will be hidden.

  100. It's like our whole life has been recorded from beginning to end,

  101. and it will be played back before us.

  102. Every action, every thought, every single word,

  103. nothing will be off limits.

  104. And if we could imagine ourselves sitting there,

  105. watching this recording of our whole life,

  106. there will be moments where we will be very proud.

  107. The way we helped that friend who was very sick.

  108. The money that you gave to support that child in compassion.

  109. The way you raised and cared for your children over so many years.

  110. And those countless acts of kindness towards a stranger.

  111. There will be so much that you will be proud of.

  112. And then as the video goes on,

  113. there will be moments you will be very ashamed of.

  114. You'll be sitting squirming in your seat.

  115. That broken friendship that is never the same again

  116. because of what we said.

  117. The extra money that we kept because we fiddled our accounts.

  118. The times that we lost our temper with our kids

  119. or spoke an unkind word to our spouse.

  120. The lie that we told to our boss

  121. just so they didn't find out.

  122. This is the big day when each one of us

  123. will have to stand before God,

  124. the creator and the ruler of our lives,

  125. and we're going to have to give an account

  126. for how we have lived.

  127. Now before we look at this in more detail

  128. and get into the text,

  129. I want to address what I think is a very common question.

  130. And it goes something like this.

  131. People ask it.

  132. They'll say,

  133. how can a loving God be a judging God?

  134. There's a bit of a contradiction there.

  135. Loving and judging don't go together.

  136. We all like the idea of a loving God.

  137. Somebody who cares for us,

  138. who provides for us,

  139. who wants us to be happy in life.

  140. But when we talk of a God who judges,

  141. well, we react against it.

  142. Some time ago,

  143. I attended the funeral of somebody

  144. who had lived the life full of crime

  145. and full of violence.

  146. In fact, they died a very violent death.

  147. And no doubt,

  148. they had lots of acts of love and kindness,

  149. but much of their life left people broken,

  150. hurt,

  151. and in fear.

  152. And at the funeral,

  153. they spoke of the person in glowing terms.

  154. And they celebrated the fact

  155. that he was now in heaven with the angels.

  156. You see,

  157. the assumption was

  158. that God is so loving

  159. that he lets people off the hook.

  160. He's kind of portrayed

  161. as some kind of sympathetic grandfather

  162. sitting in his rocking chair

  163. who pretends not to see

  164. what is really going on.

  165. But that's a contradiction to love, isn't it?

  166. If God is a God of love,

  167. he can't ignore evil.

  168. He doesn't turn a blind eye

  169. to the hurt and the damage that is caused.

  170. He demands justice.

  171. He demands fairness.

  172. What kind of loving God

  173. would sit back and ignore sin

  174. and pretend that,

  175. well, it doesn't really matter what people do?

  176. You see,

  177. not to judge

  178. would be very unloving.

  179. Not to impose

  180. justice

  181. would be very unkind.

  182. And in the Bible,

  183. God's judgment

  184. is always an expression

  185. of his love

  186. and his delight

  187. in his created world.

  188. He judges

  189. because

  190. evil

  191. destroys

  192. the harmony

  193. and the beauty

  194. of God's good world.

  195. He judges

  196. because

  197. injustice

  198. breaks the peace

  199. and the happiness

  200. that God intends

  201. for his people.

  202. So the God of love

  203. is a God of judgment

  204. because he's determined

  205. and he's committed

  206. to put all the wrongs to right,

  207. to undo the brokenness

  208. that we see and experience

  209. in this world

  210. and to put it all together again.

  211. So we must never see

  212. a contradiction

  213. between the God of love

  214. and the God

  215. who judges.

  216. Well, that's just a bit

  217. of an aside.

  218. We need to get back

  219. into the text

  220. of chapter 2

  221. and see what it is saying

  222. to us

  223. today.

  224. So,

  225. God's judgment

  226. is inescapable.

  227. God's judgment

  228. might be a good thing,

  229. but as we're sitting

  230. here listening,

  231. we think,

  232. surely God

  233. isn't going to judge me.

  234. After all,

  235. I'm not really

  236. a bad person.

  237. Alright,

  238. I'm not perfect,

  239. but I'm not as bad

  240. as him

  241. and I am certainly

  242. not as bad

  243. as her.

  244. Well,

  245. look at verse 1

  246. of chapter 2.

  247. You, therefore,

  248. have no excuse,

  249. you who pass judgment

  250. on someone else,

  251. for at whatever point

  252. you judge the other,

  253. you are condemning

  254. yourself

  255. because you

  256. who pass judgment

  257. do the same things.

  258. Our Taoiseach

  259. Brian Cowan

  260. has had a rough

  261. couple of weeks,

  262. hasn't he?

  263. And according

  264. to public opinion,

  265. he should go.

  266. The last recent poll

  267. said there was only

  268. 11% of the population

  269. who wants him

  270. as leader.

  271. His session

  272. at the Galway

  273. Think-In

  274. or what's been

  275. nicknamed

  276. the Drink-In

  277. and the way

  278. he conducted

  279. himself afterwards

  280. was dismissing

  281. the nation

  282. as if to say,

  283. I don't care

  284. about your problems.

  285. In the public's

  286. judgment,

  287. he should resign

  288. as leader.

  289. But the question

  290. that I would like

  291. to ask is this.

  292. how many people

  293. in this country,

  294. how many people

  295. in this room

  296. have had a bad

  297. day at work

  298. who haven't been

  299. able to function

  300. properly

  301. because of too much

  302. Arthur Guinness

  303. the night before?

  304. We really shouldn't

  305. throw stones

  306. in glass houses.

  307. You see,

  308. what Paul is doing

  309. here is tackling

  310. the good-living

  311. moralistic person.

  312. The person

  313. who thinks,

  314. I'm alright,

  315. Jack.

  316. You see,

  317. back in chapter 1

  318. verses 18 to 32,

  319. Paul had been

  320. listing the various

  321. kinds of people

  322. that God is going

  323. to judge.

  324. So I want us

  325. to imagine

  326. the church scene.

  327. We have a family

  328. who arrive into

  329. the church

  330. and they take

  331. their seat

  332. in the pew.

  333. Mr. and Mrs. Good

  334. will call them

  335. and their son

  336. Pius

  337. and their daughter

  338. Superior.

  339. And there they are

  340. sitting,

  341. nicely dressed

  342. with their Bibles

  343. listening to the

  344. letter of Romans

  345. being read out.

  346. And it gets to

  347. verse 24 of

  348. chapter 1.

  349. Therefore God

  350. gave them over

  351. in the sinful

  352. desires of their

  353. hearts to sexual

  354. impurity for the

  355. degrading of their

  356. bodies with one

  357. another.

  358. Sexual impurity.

  359. They deserve to be

  360. judged.

  361. Dreadful people,

  362. you know.

  363. I wouldn't do

  364. that sort of thing.

  365. The sermon goes on.

  366. They get to verse 26,

  367. chapter 1.

  368. Because of this,

  369. God gave them over

  370. to the shameful

  371. lust.

  372. Those people,

  373. they ought to be

  374. damned as well.

  375. Go on, Paul.

  376. Preach it, Paul.

  377. That's right, Paul.

  378. Destroy those

  379. terrible people

  380. and may God

  381. deal with their

  382. gross behaviour.

  383. But what Paul

  384. is doing is

  385. building them up

  386. with a false

  387. sense of security

  388. and superiority.

  389. Because as the

  390. sermon moves on,

  391. he gets very,

  392. very personal.

  393. He begins to

  394. list others who

  395. are going to be

  396. judged.

  397. Look at the end

  398. of verse 29.

  399. The very last one,

  400. he talks about

  401. people who gossip.

  402. And Mr.

  403. and Mrs.

  404. Good look at

  405. each other in the

  406. pew and go,

  407. oh, that's me.

  408. I gossip.

  409. The sermon goes on

  410. to the end of

  411. verse 30 and he

  412. talks about people

  413. who disobey their

  414. parents.

  415. And pious and

  416. superior look at

  417. each other and go,

  418. oh, that's us too.

  419. And in a

  420. devastating blow,

  421. they find

  422. themselves

  423. entrapped.

  424. Chapter 2,

  425. verse 1.

  426. You,

  427. therefore,

  428. have no excuse,

  429. you who pass

  430. judgment on

  431. someone else.

  432. For at whatever

  433. point you judge

  434. the other,

  435. you are condemning

  436. yourself because

  437. you who pass

  438. judgment do the

  439. same things.

  440. Now, he's not

  441. saying that we all

  442. behave in exactly

  443. the same way and

  444. we all get up to

  445. the same kinds of

  446. things.

  447. Rather, he's saying

  448. at one point or

  449. another, every

  450. single one of us

  451. fail and fall.

  452. God doesn't

  453. grade sin.

  454. it will all be

  455. treated in the

  456. same way,

  457. whether you have

  458. had an affair

  459. or whether you

  460. have gossiped.

  461. His judgment

  462. is so pointed

  463. that it is

  464. inescapable for

  465. everyone.

  466. Verse 2.

  467. Now we know

  468. that God's

  469. judgment against

  470. those who do

  471. such things is

  472. based on truth.

  473. There's been

  474. lots of rumors,

  475. hasn't there,

  476. depending on the

  477. paper you read,

  478. about Brian Cowan.

  479. I haven't a clue

  480. how many pints

  481. he had.

  482. I don't know

  483. what time he

  484. went to bed at

  485. and I don't even

  486. know what time

  487. he got up at.

  488. And I don't think

  489. you know either.

  490. None of us know.

  491. The same as I

  492. don't know what

  493. you were doing

  494. this weekend

  495. and you don't

  496. know what I

  497. was doing at

  498. my 20-year

  499. reunion.

  500. But God does

  501. because God

  502. sees and as it

  503. says here in

  504. verse 2,

  505. God is a

  506. God of

  507. truth.

  508. Verse 3.

  509. So when you,

  510. a mere man,

  511. just an

  512. ordinary

  513. Joe

  514. blog,

  515. pass

  516. judgment on

  517. them and

  518. yet you do

  519. the same

  520. things,

  521. do you really

  522. think that you're

  523. going to escape

  524. God's

  525. judgment?

  526. You see,

  527. on the big

  528. day there's

  529. going to be

  530. no cover-ups,

  531. there's going

  532. to be no

  533. spin,

  534. no excuses,

  535. nowhere to

  536. hide,

  537. everything will

  538. be uncovered,

  539. everything will

  540. be laid bare

  541. and our

  542. superior

  543. judgmental

  544. attitudes of

  545. others are

  546. only going to

  547. condemn us.

  548. His judgment

  549. is inescapable,

  550. especially,

  551. especially for

  552. those who think

  553. themselves better

  554. or superior

  555. to other

  556. people.

  557. But thankfully,

  558. God's

  559. judgment is

  560. also delayed.

  561. Look at

  562. verse 4.

  563. Do you

  564. show contempt

  565. for the riches

  566. of his

  567. kindness,

  568. his tolerance

  569. and his

  570. patience,

  571. not realising

  572. that God's

  573. kindness

  574. leads you

  575. towards

  576. repentance?

  577. Jesus.

  578. The other

  579. Friday evening

  580. in the back

  581. room there

  582. at our

  583. Crusader youth

  584. group,

  585. I sat

  586. round a

  587. table with

  588. some of the

  589. lads.

  590. We have a

  591. Bible discussion

  592. and they're

  593. always wanting

  594. to try and

  595. catch you out

  596. with difficult

  597. questions.

  598. So one of

  599. them said to

  600. me,

  601. Johnny,

  602. God doesn't

  603. like people

  604. doing bad

  605. things,

  606. does he?

  607. No,

  608. I said he

  609. doesn't.

  610. Well then,

  611. if he's

  612. God,

  613. why doesn't

  614. he stop

  615. all the

  616. evil in

  617. the world?

  618. And with

  619. that he

  620. turned round

  621. and he

  622. slapped his

  623. friend on

  624. the back

  625. of the

  626. head.

  627. And then

  628. he continued,

  629. if God

  630. is true,

  631. he'd stop

  632. me,

  633. wouldn't

  634. he?

  635. And then

  636. he slapped

  637. his friend

  638. again.

  639. As if to

  640. say,

  641. you see,

  642. if God

  643. is there,

  644. if God

  645. took sin

  646. seriously,

  647. he'd do

  648. something about

  649. it.

  650. Because he

  651. isn't,

  652. he's not

  653. there.

  654. Well,

  655. I wasn't

  656. quick enough

  657. in my

  658. answer.

  659. This is

  660. the verse

  661. I should

  662. have said

  663. or pointed

  664. to,

  665. verse 4

  666. of chapter

  667. 2.

  668. You see,

  669. God will

  670. one day

  671. judge,

  672. but he's

  673. holding back

  674. on his

  675. judgment

  676. because of

  677. his kindness

  678. and patience.

  679. We all

  680. deserve to

  681. be judged

  682. right now

  683. and removed

  684. from God's

  685. good world

  686. because we've

  687. all messed

  688. it up,

  689. we've all

  690. played our

  691. part in it.

  692. But God

  693. is long

  694. suffering,

  695. and he's

  696. withholding

  697. his judgment

  698. for a reason.

  699. Look at the

  700. end of

  701. verse 4.

  702. Do you

  703. not realise

  704. that God's

  705. kindness,

  706. that's his

  707. tolerance and

  708. his patience,

  709. is to lead

  710. you towards

  711. repentance?

  712. Tolerance

  713. means time.

  714. Time to

  715. repent.

  716. Time to

  717. do business

  718. with God.

  719. Time to

  720. sort our

  721. lives out

  722. before it's

  723. too late.

  724. Of course,

  725. if we go

  726. around slapping

  727. people across

  728. the head

  729. and ignore

  730. God's

  731. kindness,

  732. then we're

  733. going to

  734. have to

  735. face the

  736. consequences,

  737. verse 5.

  738. But because

  739. of your

  740. stubbornness

  741. and your

  742. unrepentant

  743. heart,

  744. you are

  745. storing up

  746. wrath against

  747. yourself.

  748. For the

  749. day of

  750. God's

  751. wrath,

  752. when his

  753. righteous

  754. judgment

  755. will be

  756. revealed.

  757. They're

  758. tough words,

  759. aren't

  760. they?

  761. Picture in

  762. your minds

  763. for a

  764. minute a

  765. great big

  766. dam at

  767. the top

  768. of a

  769. valley.

  770. Year

  771. after year

  772. as the

  773. rains fall

  774. and the

  775. waters flow

  776. down into

  777. it, the

  778. water builds

  779. up and it

  780. builds up and

  781. the pressure

  782. continually

  783. increases behind

  784. the dam.

  785. And while

  786. the dam is

  787. managing to

  788. hold the

  789. waters back,

  790. sooner or

  791. later the

  792. dam is going

  793. to crack,

  794. the dam is

  795. going to

  796. burst and

  797. the water

  798. is going

  799. to come

  800. flooding down

  801. the valley,

  802. destroying

  803. everything in

  804. its path.

  805. Well, it's

  806. like God

  807. is holding

  808. back the

  809. water of

  810. his wrath

  811. and

  812. judgments.

  813. You see,

  814. every time we

  815. ignore his

  816. kindness,

  817. every time we

  818. turn our back

  819. on his

  820. patience and

  821. go on living

  822. as we

  823. please,

  824. the pressure

  825. is increasing.

  826. It's building

  827. up, it's

  828. building up.

  829. As it says

  830. in verse 5,

  831. we are storing

  832. up wrath.

  833. And eventually

  834. the pressure

  835. will be so

  836. great that

  837. it's going

  838. to burst

  839. and God's

  840. judgment

  841. will be

  842. revealed.

  843. God's

  844. kindness.

  845. Now,

  846. there's only

  847. two possible

  848. responses to

  849. God's

  850. kindness.

  851. I haven't

  852. had it on

  853. the screen

  854. here, but

  855. the first

  856. response is

  857. this, to

  858. be repentant

  859. believers.

  860. Look at

  861. verse 7.

  862. It says

  863. there, to

  864. those who

  865. by persistence

  866. in doing

  867. good, seek

  868. glory, honour

  869. and immortality,

  870. he will give

  871. eternal life.

  872. Now, we

  873. mustn't get

  874. confused here.

  875. This is not

  876. rewards for

  877. our performance,

  878. but the

  879. results of

  880. our repentance.

  881. It's not

  882. because we've

  883. done good

  884. things that

  885. God gives

  886. us eternal

  887. life, but

  888. because of

  889. our repentance

  890. and repentance

  891. always leads

  892. to, or it

  893. is always

  894. demonstrated by

  895. our good

  896. works.

  897. God gives

  898. us.

  899. And the

  900. person who

  901. does that,

  902. it says

  903. there in

  904. verse 7,

  905. he will

  906. give eternal

  907. life.

  908. They will

  909. be part of

  910. his new

  911. kingdom.

  912. The other

  913. response is

  914. to be those

  915. who reject

  916. the truth,

  917. verse 8.

  918. But for

  919. those who

  920. are self-seeking

  921. and who

  922. reject the

  923. truth and

  924. follow evil,

  925. in other

  926. words, for

  927. the person

  928. who is

  929. unrepentant,

  930. there will

  931. be wrath

  932. and anger.

  933. His

  934. judgment is

  935. coming.

  936. What's it

  937. going to

  938. be?

  939. Repentance

  940. or rejection?

  941. What is

  942. your destiny

  943. going to

  944. be?

  945. Okay,

  946. you say,

  947. so God

  948. is going

  949. to judge.

  950. I've got

  951. that worked

  952. out.

  953. He's also

  954. very patient.

  955. He's giving

  956. us time.

  957. I've got

  958. that figured

  959. out.

  960. But I've

  961. got a clever

  962. question for

  963. you now,

  964. Johnny.

  965. What if I

  966. know nothing

  967. about God?

  968. Then what?

  969. Well, look

  970. at verse 11.

  971. It tells us

  972. that God

  973. does not

  974. show

  975. favouritism.

  976. In other

  977. words, that

  978. he's very

  979. fair.

  980. But how

  981. can God

  982. be fair,

  983. Johnny?

  984. What about

  985. all those

  986. people that

  987. never heard

  988. of Jesus?

  989. Or what

  990. about all

  991. those people

  992. who've

  993. never been

  994. to church?

  995. And you

  996. know what?

  997. I've never

  998. read my

  999. Bible.

  1000. You can't

  1001. be judged

  1002. on what

  1003. you don't

  1004. know,

  1005. can you?

  1006. Well, that

  1007. question is

  1008. answered for

  1009. us in

  1010. verse 12.

  1011. It says

  1012. there,

  1013. all who

  1014. sin,

  1015. apart from

  1016. the law,

  1017. apart from

  1018. God's

  1019. word,

  1020. will also

  1021. perish,

  1022. apart from

  1023. God's word.

  1024. verse 14.

  1025. Indeed, when

  1026. Gentiles,

  1027. that's the

  1028. kind of

  1029. summary word

  1030. for anybody

  1031. who isn't

  1032. a Jew,

  1033. indeed, when

  1034. Gentiles who

  1035. do not

  1036. have the

  1037. law, do

  1038. not have

  1039. God's

  1040. word,

  1041. do by

  1042. nature

  1043. things

  1044. required by

  1045. the law,

  1046. they are

  1047. a law for

  1048. themselves,

  1049. even though

  1050. they do

  1051. not have

  1052. the law.

  1053. Now, that's

  1054. kind of quite

  1055. difficult.

  1056. We'd have to

  1057. read that a

  1058. few times,

  1059. and still

  1060. we're kind

  1061. of struggling

  1062. to understand

  1063. it.

  1064. I listened

  1065. to a very

  1066. good illustration

  1067. on this.

  1068. Tim Keller

  1069. quoted

  1070. Francis Schaeffer.

  1071. Francis Schaeffer

  1072. was one of the

  1073. great Christian

  1074. thinkers and

  1075. writers,

  1076. and he

  1077. describes this

  1078. section here

  1079. in Romans

  1080. as what he

  1081. calls the

  1082. invisible tape

  1083. recorder.

  1084. He says

  1085. every single

  1086. person,

  1087. imagine he

  1088. says that

  1089. every single

  1090. person in

  1091. the world

  1092. has an

  1093. invisible tape

  1094. recorder

  1095. strapped

  1096. around their

  1097. necks.

  1098. So right

  1099. now, all

  1100. of us have

  1101. this invisible

  1102. tape recorder.

  1103. You might

  1104. look, but it's

  1105. not there because

  1106. it's invisible.

  1107. It is there, but

  1108. it's invisible.

  1109. You can't see

  1110. it.

  1111. And on

  1112. judgment day,

  1113. everybody will

  1114. be brought

  1115. before God.

  1116. And of course,

  1117. there'll be people

  1118. there who will

  1119. say,

  1120. okay God, I'm

  1121. here, but I

  1122. didn't know you

  1123. were going to be

  1124. here.

  1125. Nobody ever

  1126. told me that

  1127. there was a

  1128. God.

  1129. I never

  1130. had a Bible.

  1131. Nobody took

  1132. me to Sunday

  1133. school.

  1134. I never went

  1135. to church.

  1136. You can't

  1137. judge me.

  1138. I didn't

  1139. know.

  1140. And then

  1141. God reaches

  1142. forward and

  1143. he takes

  1144. off the

  1145. invisible tape

  1146. recorder.

  1147. So I didn't

  1148. know it was

  1149. there.

  1150. Well, no, of

  1151. course you

  1152. didn't because

  1153. it was

  1154. invisible.

  1155. But he

  1156. makes it

  1157. visible and

  1158. you see this

  1159. tape recorder.

  1160. And God

  1161. says to you,

  1162. I want you

  1163. to know that

  1164. I am very,

  1165. very fair.

  1166. I'm a just

  1167. God.

  1168. So I'm

  1169. not going

  1170. to judge

  1171. you by

  1172. what you

  1173. don't

  1174. know,

  1175. but what

  1176. you do

  1177. know.

  1178. I'm not

  1179. going to

  1180. judge you

  1181. by the

  1182. Bible because

  1183. you never

  1184. read it.

  1185. I'm not

  1186. going to

  1187. judge you

  1188. by Jesus

  1189. Christ because

  1190. you never

  1191. heard about

  1192. him.

  1193. I'm going

  1194. to judge

  1195. you by

  1196. your own

  1197. standards or

  1198. by your

  1199. own conscience.

  1200. Look at

  1201. verse 15.

  1202. Since they

  1203. show that

  1204. the requirements

  1205. of the

  1206. law are

  1207. written on

  1208. their hearts,

  1209. their

  1210. consciences,

  1211. also bearing

  1212. witness and

  1213. their thoughts

  1214. now accusing,

  1215. now even

  1216. defending them.

  1217. You see,

  1218. we've all got a

  1219. conscience and

  1220. our conscience,

  1221. no matter who

  1222. we are,

  1223. tells us that's

  1224. right or

  1225. that's wrong.

  1226. God says,

  1227. so when we

  1228. take off this

  1229. recorder,

  1230. God says,

  1231. it's recorded

  1232. every single

  1233. time you

  1234. have said to

  1235. somebody else,

  1236. you should

  1237. have done

  1238. that.

  1239. You shouldn't

  1240. have done

  1241. that.

  1242. You ought

  1243. to have said

  1244. that.

  1245. God says,

  1246. I'm going

  1247. to judge

  1248. you by

  1249. the standard

  1250. that you

  1251. judge others.

  1252. Now that's

  1253. completely fair.

  1254. Now that's

  1255. a big problem,

  1256. isn't it?

  1257. Because I

  1258. can't even

  1259. live up to

  1260. my own

  1261. standards,

  1262. let alone

  1263. God's

  1264. standards.

  1265. How many

  1266. times have I

  1267. told my

  1268. kids,

  1269. stop being

  1270. grumpy and

  1271. don't be

  1272. rude?

  1273. I'll not

  1274. tell you how

  1275. many times

  1276. I'm grumpy

  1277. and rude.

  1278. You see,

  1279. it's back to

  1280. verse 1

  1281. again,

  1282. isn't it?

  1283. You,

  1284. therefore,

  1285. have no

  1286. excuse.

  1287. You who

  1288. pass judgment

  1289. on someone

  1290. else,

  1291. every time

  1292. you start

  1293. pointing fingers

  1294. at other

  1295. people,

  1296. you're

  1297. judging

  1298. yourself.

  1299. You're

  1300. condemning

  1301. yourself because

  1302. you who

  1303. pass judgment,

  1304. you do

  1305. exactly the

  1306. same things.

  1307. You see,

  1308. no matter

  1309. who we are,

  1310. whether we're

  1311. judged by

  1312. God's law or

  1313. by our own

  1314. heart law,

  1315. whether we're

  1316. irreligious

  1317. people or

  1318. religious people,

  1319. whether we've

  1320. read our

  1321. Bibles or

  1322. haven't read

  1323. our Bibles,

  1324. we will all

  1325. discover that

  1326. we're all

  1327. guilty and

  1328. that we

  1329. deserve to

  1330. be judged.

  1331. You see,

  1332. God's

  1333. fairness is

  1334. not a

  1335. problem.

  1336. The problem

  1337. is with our

  1338. own stubborn

  1339. and rebellious

  1340. hearts.

  1341. So if

  1342. God's

  1343. judgment is

  1344. completely

  1345. fair,

  1346. what hope

  1347. is there

  1348. going to

  1349. be for

  1350. any of

  1351. us,

  1352. because we're

  1353. all going

  1354. to be

  1355. found

  1356. wanting.

  1357. Well, the

  1358. Bible does

  1359. talk about a

  1360. day of

  1361. judgment to

  1362. come,

  1363. but it also

  1364. talks about a

  1365. day of

  1366. judgment that

  1367. has passed.

  1368. This day

  1369. is the day

  1370. when Jesus

  1371. died on the

  1372. cross.

  1373. On the

  1374. cross,

  1375. Jesus takes

  1376. the judgment

  1377. that you

  1378. and I

  1379. deserve.

  1380. Remember that

  1381. imagery of the

  1382. dam and the

  1383. river?

  1384. Well, it's

  1385. like Jesus

  1386. is standing

  1387. in front of

  1388. that dam,

  1389. and the

  1390. wrath of God

  1391. that is

  1392. stored up

  1393. for us

  1394. has been

  1395. poured out

  1396. on Jesus.

  1397. Instead of

  1398. crashing and

  1399. flowing over

  1400. us, it

  1401. falls onto

  1402. Christ, and

  1403. it is

  1404. absorbed

  1405. completely

  1406. onto Christ,

  1407. and all

  1408. those who

  1409. stand behind

  1410. him, all

  1411. those who

  1412. put their

  1413. faith and

  1414. have repented

  1415. and stand

  1416. in the

  1417. security of

  1418. the cross,

  1419. the judgment

  1420. flows past.

  1421. We are

  1422. protected and

  1423. kept safe,

  1424. so we no

  1425. longer need to

  1426. fear God's

  1427. judgment, now

  1428. or in the

  1429. future.

  1430. Instead, we

  1431. live with the

  1432. freedom that

  1433. all our sin

  1434. has been dealt

  1435. with.

  1436. Now, if we

  1437. begin to apply

  1438. this to our

  1439. lives, it's

  1440. not just going

  1441. to be a

  1442. wonderful idea,

  1443. but it's

  1444. going to change

  1445. us on the

  1446. inside out.

  1447. In two ways,

  1448. and we see

  1449. this on the

  1450. screen here.

  1451. The first

  1452. way is that

  1453. I will no

  1454. longer judge

  1455. myself.

  1456. Because Jesus

  1457. is judged

  1458. instead of

  1459. me, I

  1460. no longer

  1461. look down

  1462. at myself

  1463. and beat

  1464. myself up

  1465. when I

  1466. fail and

  1467. fall.

  1468. Do you do

  1469. that?

  1470. When you

  1471. fail and

  1472. fall, do

  1473. you look at

  1474. yourself and

  1475. go, you're

  1476. so bad,

  1477. Johnny, you're

  1478. so awful, you

  1479. might as well

  1480. give up the

  1481. Christian life

  1482. because you're

  1483. just a waste

  1484. of space and

  1485. you keep

  1486. getting it

  1487. wrong all

  1488. the time.

  1489. Give up.

  1490. Satan comes

  1491. alongside and

  1492. he reminds me

  1493. of what I've

  1494. said and

  1495. what I've

  1496. done.

  1497. And being

  1498. at a 20

  1499. year reunion,

  1500. there were

  1501. lots of

  1502. stories to

  1503. remind me of

  1504. what I've

  1505. done.

  1506. What do I

  1507. do?

  1508. I look to

  1509. the cross and

  1510. I see Christ

  1511. and I see

  1512. that the

  1513. judgment has

  1514. fallen on

  1515. him.

  1516. I'm no

  1517. longer condemned.

  1518. I've been

  1519. set free.

  1520. I'm a child

  1521. of God,

  1522. treasured and

  1523. loved by

  1524. him.

  1525. So I no

  1526. longer have

  1527. to judge

  1528. myself because

  1529. Christ has

  1530. been judged

  1531. instead of

  1532. me.

  1533. And the

  1534. second thing

  1535. is I no

  1536. longer need

  1537. to judge

  1538. others.

  1539. Because Jesus

  1540. is judged

  1541. instead of

  1542. me, I no

  1543. longer look

  1544. down on

  1545. others because

  1546. now I see

  1547. that I'm

  1548. actually no

  1549. different to

  1550. anybody else.

  1551. when I see

  1552. people sin,

  1553. when I see

  1554. people fail

  1555. and fall,

  1556. I'm no

  1557. longer pointing

  1558. the finger

  1559. at them

  1560. saying,

  1561. they're so

  1562. bad, they

  1563. deserve God's

  1564. judgment.

  1565. I'm no

  1566. longer pointing

  1567. the finger,

  1568. instead I'm

  1569. pointing them

  1570. to the cross.

  1571. I'm pointing

  1572. them towards

  1573. Jesus and I'm

  1574. saying, Jesus

  1575. can take your

  1576. judgment too.

  1577. truth.

  1578. So it

  1579. changes how

  1580. I look at

  1581. myself and

  1582. it changes

  1583. how I look

  1584. at other

  1585. people as

  1586. well.

  1587. When we

  1588. look at

  1589. Christ, it

  1590. transforms

  1591. our outlook

  1592. in every

  1593. way.

  1594. Turn with

  1595. me please

  1596. to Romans

    Romans 14 chapter mention

  1597. chapter 14.

  1598. As we

  1599. close, I

  1600. just want to

  1601. read these

  1602. few verses.

  1603. Romans

    Romans 14 chapter mention

  1604. chapter 14,

  1605. just a couple

  1606. of pages on

  1607. and verse 9.

  1608. And as we

  1609. read this, I

  1610. just want us

  1611. to reflect

  1612. and personally

  1613. respond to

  1614. what we

  1615. hear.

  1616. We'll just

  1617. take a minute

  1618. silence, having

  1619. read it, for

  1620. us to reflect

  1621. upon what we

  1622. see here.

  1623. Romans

    Romans 14:9

  1624. chapter 14,

  1625. verse 9.

  1626. It says

  1627. this, for

  1628. this very

  1629. reason, Christ

  1630. died and

  1631. returned to

  1632. life, so

  1633. that he

  1634. might be

  1635. Lord of

  1636. both the

  1637. dead and

  1638. the living.

  1639. You

  1640. then, why

  1641. do you

  1642. judge your

  1643. brother?

  1644. Why do you

  1645. look down

  1646. on your

  1647. sister?

  1648. For we

  1649. will all

  1650. stand before

  1651. God's

  1652. judgment

  1653. seat.

  1654. God's

  1655. heart.

  1656. It is

  1657. written, as

  1658. surely as

  1659. I live,

  1660. says the

  1661. Lord, every

  1662. knee will

  1663. bow before

  1664. me and

  1665. every tongue

  1666. will confess

  1667. to God.

  1668. So then

  1669. each of

  1670. us will

  1671. give an

  1672. account of

  1673. himself to

  1674. God.

  1675. Therefore,

  1676. let us

  1677. stop passing

  1678. judgment on

  1679. one another.

  1680. God's

  1681. heart.

  1682. Let's just

  1683. take a

  1684. minute to

  1685. reflect and

  1686. to respond in

  1687. our own

  1688. hearts to

  1689. God.

  1690. God's

  1691. heart.

  1692. Let's

  1693. God's

  1694. heart.

  1695. God's

1696. Our Father God, we thank you so much for Jesus.

1697. We have that picture in our minds of that dam, that river,

  1698. it bursting forth.

1699. We picture Christ who has absorbed the judgment for us,

1700. so that we can be set free, so that we can be your children.

1701. We thank you that because of Jesus that we can truly look forward to the day of judgment,

1702. because it is a day when you will welcome us into your eternal kingdom.

1703. We will live with you forever.

1704. We will stand there not on the basis of our performance or our goodness,

1705. but we will point to Christ,

1706. and we will say Christ has done it for me.

1707. We thank you, Jesus, so much.

1708. Please, Father, we ask that you would work this truth into our lives as we go about this week,

1709. and when we fail, because we're all going to slip and fall up this week,

1710. we would not start judging ourselves, but we would look straight to Christ

1711. and remember that he has been judged.

  1712. We're no longer condemned.

1713. And when we're with our friends and with family and they say or do something that's wrong,

1714. help us not to be judgmental,

1715. but instead gently and graciously help us to point them to the cross

1716. and show them that Jesus has taken their judgment too.

1717. We ask these things in Jesus' name.

  1718. Amen.
