  1. Genesis chapter 2 verses 18 to 25.

    Genesis 2:18–25

  2. The Lord God said,

  3. It is not good for man to be alone.

  4. I will make a helper suitable for him.

  5. Now the Lord God has formed out of the ground

  6. all the beasts of the field and all the birds of the air.

  7. He brought them to the man to see what he would name them

  8. and whatever the man called each living creature,

  9. that's what its name.

  10. That was its name.

  11. So the man gave names to all the livestock,

  12. the birds of the air and all the beasts of the field.

  13. But for Adam, no suitable helper was found.

  14. So the Lord God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep

  15. and while he was sleeping,

  16. he took one of the man's ribs

  17. and closed up the place with flesh.

  18. Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib

  19. that he had taken out of the man

  20. and he brought her to the man.

  21. The man said,

  22. This is now bones of my bones and flesh of my flesh.

  23. She shall be called woman,

  24. for she was taken out of man.

  25. For this reason,

  26. a man will leave his father and mother

  27. and be united to his wife

  28. and they will become one flesh.

  29. The man and his wife were both naked

  30. and they felt no shame.

  31. Our next reading is in 1 Corinthians 7,

    1 Corinthians 7:1–9

  32. verses 1-9.

  33. And that's from page 1148.

  34. Chapter 7, verses 1-9.

  35. Now for the matters you wrote about.

  36. It is good for a man not to marry.

  37. But since there is so much immorality,

  38. each man should have his own wife

  39. and each woman her own husband.

  40. The husband should fulfill his marital duty to his wife

  41. and likewise the wife to her husband.

  42. The wife's body does not belong to her alone,

  43. but also to her husband.

  44. In the same way,

  45. the husband's body does not belong to him alone,

  46. but also to his wife.

  47. Do not deprive each other

  48. except by mutual consent and for a time,

  49. so that you may devote yourselves to prayer.

  50. Then come together again

  51. so that Satan will not tempt you

  52. because of your lack of self-control.

  53. I say this as a concession,

  54. not as a command.

  55. I wish that all men were as I am,

  56. but each man has his own gift from God.

  57. One has this gift,

  58. another has that.

  59. Now to the unmarried and the widows,

  60. I say,

  61. it is good for them to stay unmarried as I am.

  62. But if they cannot control themselves,

  63. they should marry,

  64. for it is better to marry

  65. than to burn with passion.

  66. Thank you.

  67. Well, it's getting very hot and spicy, isn't it?

  68. Reading like that.

  69. Well, we need God's help

  70. as we look at his word together.

  71. So have your pens and your paper at the ready

  72. to take notes.

  73. Your Bible's open

  74. and we'll ask God for his help

  75. as we look at this together.

  76. Father, there are many things

  77. that we take for granted in this world,

  78. not least our relationships one to another.

  79. And we see that very often

  80. our relationships one to another

  81. can become distorted

  82. and not what they ought to be.

  83. And so we come this morning

  84. with just a newness

  85. wanting to hear again from you

  86. your design for marriage

  87. and what it's all about.

  88. We pray for your help

  89. for each one of us

  90. to understand clearly

  91. for myself as I speak this message.

  92. and we ask, Father,

  93. that you would pour out

  94. your Holy Spirit upon us

  95. to help us to apply it

  96. and to work it into our lives

  97. so that our marriage is everything

  98. that it ought to be.

  99. And whatever situation

  100. that we find ourselves here this morning,

  101. whether we are married

  102. or whether we are on our own,

  103. we pray, Lord,

  104. that you would speak to us

  105. and show us all

  106. the kind of people

  107. that we should be.

  108. In Jesus' name.

  109. Amen.

  110. Amen.

  111. So, as we've said

  112. at the very beginning,

  113. this is a series

  114. which we're calling Pure.

  115. And this morning,

  116. we start by looking at

  117. God's design for marriage.

  118. I don't intend to cover

  119. absolutely everything

  120. that the Bible says about marriage.

  121. We have done other talks

  122. from Colossians

  123. and also Ephesians.

  124. And I'm sure you can look

  125. in the website

  126. to get talks on that

  127. or I can give you notes for it.

  128. But here we're going to be looking

  129. at 1 Corinthians 7.

  130. So, marriage,

  131. what's the point?

  132. So, you're married then.

  133. Oh no, I would never get married.

  134. What's the point in that?

  135. We much prefer living together.

  136. It's far less complicated.

  137. Now, 20 years ago,

  138. such a conversation

  139. would have been very rare.

  140. In fact,

  141. it would have been even frowned upon.

  142. Living in sin

  143. was the phrase.

  144. But today,

  145. as we rapidly move

  146. from a conservative

  147. and religious culture

  148. to a more liberal

  149. and irreligious culture,

  150. the opposite we find

  151. is very true.

  152. To talk about getting married

  153. is outdated

  154. and overrated.

  155. Having a partner

  156. or a live-in boyfriend

  157. or girlfriend

  158. is much easier

  159. to deal with.

  160. After all,

  161. you might discover

  162. that you're not suited

  163. to each other.

  164. According to the Iona Institute

  165. for Religion and Society,

  166. in 1986,

  167. there were no figures available

  168. for people

  169. who were cohabiting.

  170. It was so rare.

  171. In 2006,

  172. the number of cohabiting couples

  173. is almost 122,000.

  174. You might think

  175. that's a small number,

  176. but double it

  177. because they're a couple

  178. and you're almost

  179. at a quarter of a million,

  180. which is quite a lot

  181. for our small population.

  182. Marriage

  183. no longer seems

  184. to be a suitable option.

  185. And perhaps the reason

  186. for this is

  187. marriage breakdown

  188. has increased

  189. by 10%

  190. since 1986,

  191. from 40,000

  192. to over 200,000.

  193. In fact,

  194. today,

  195. marital breakdown

  196. stands at 27%.

  197. So marriage

  198. no longer seems

  199. to be a viable

  200. or a stable option.

  201. So people say,

  202. what's the point

  203. of getting married?

  204. It seems

  205. an unnecessary cost.

  206. It's complicated

  207. if things don't work out.

  208. And to be honest,

  209. well,

  210. it suits

  211. if we don't have

  212. any formal ties.

  213. It seems like

  214. there's not a lot

  215. going for marriage

  216. and even Scripture

  217. sends out a warning

  218. to those

  219. who do consider marriage.

  220. Have a look

  221. at 1 Corinthians 7

  222. and the middle

  223. of verse 28.

  224. Do you see it there

  225. in verse 28?

  226. Halfway down

  227. in the verse.

  228. But those

  229. who marry

  230. will face

  231. many troubles

  232. in this life.

  233. And I want

  234. to spare you this.

  235. And all the married

  236. couples are

  237. nodding their head.

  238. So why

  239. bother with marriage?

  240. marriage?

  241. Why don't we all,

  242. as they used to say

  243. in ages past,

  244. let's all live in sin?

  245. Well,

  246. I think we've lost

  247. our way about marriage

  248. and we need to get back

  249. to the designer

  250. of marriage,

  251. the one who created us,

  252. the one who loves us

  253. and who knows

  254. what is best for us.

  255. We need to go back

  256. to God's design

  257. for marriage.

  258. marriage.

  259. And we ask the question,

  260. what marriage is?

  261. Look at verse 1

  262. of chapter 7.

  263. Now for the matters

  264. you wrote about,

  265. it is good for a man

  266. not to marry.

  267. 1 Corinthians

  268. is a letter

  269. written to a church

  270. in a culture

  271. that was up to its eyes

  272. in sexual freedom.

  273. People did

  274. whatever they wanted

  275. with whoever

  276. they wanted.

  277. It was a promiscuous

  278. and licentious city

  279. where anything goes,

  280. except,

  281. it seems,

  282. marriage.

  283. The Christians thought,

  284. verse 1,

  285. that it was good

  286. for a person

  287. not to marry.

  288. Or if you look

  289. at the note

  290. in the bottom

  291. of your page,

  292. there's probably

  293. a little A

  294. or something

  295. at the end

  296. of verse 1

  297. and in the note

  298. at the bottom

  299. it says,

  300. it is good for a man

  301. not to have

  302. sexual relations

  303. with a woman.

  304. In other words,

  305. the only way

  306. that they were to live

  307. in such a sex-crazed society

  308. was to live a life

  309. of celibacy

  310. whether you were

  311. single or married.

  312. The Christians thought

  313. it was actually

  314. more spiritual.

  315. It was more holy

  316. to abstain

  317. even if you were married.

  318. And in an attempt

  319. to be counter-cultural,

  320. they went from

  321. one extreme

  322. to the other.

  323. So Paul seems

  324. to address this balance.

  325. He wants to put

  326. things right.

  327. So he says

  328. in verse 2,

  329. but since there is

  330. so much immorality,

  331. each man should have

  332. his own wife

  333. and each woman

  334. her own husband.

  335. In fact,

  336. back in chapter 6,

  337. just a couple of verses

  338. back up,

  339. in verse 16,

  340. he's already referred

  341. to God's good order.

  342. He's actually

  343. for marriage.

  344. It was the people

  345. in the church

  346. who were saying

  347. it wasn't good

  348. for people to marry.

  349. And Paul's trying

  350. to get across

  351. the point that,

  352. yes,

  353. there is a place

  354. for marriage.

  355. marriage.

  356. And in chapter 6,

  357. verse 16,

  358. there he quotes

  359. from Genesis chapter 2,

    Genesis 2:24

  360. verse 24,

  361. where he talks

  362. about the two

  363. becoming one flesh.

  364. So what I want us

  365. to do now

  366. is to jump back

  367. into Genesis chapter 2

    Genesis 2 chapter mention

  368. to get the foundation

  369. of which Paul

  370. builds his whole argument.

  371. So let's go back

  372. to Genesis chapter 2

    Genesis 2 chapter mention

  373. and verse 20.

  374. Genesis chapter 2

    Genesis 2 chapter mention

  375. and starting in

  376. at verse 20.

  377. We read there,

  378. But for Adam

  379. no suitable helper

  380. was found.

  381. So the Lord

  382. caused the man

  383. to fall into a deep sleep

  384. and while he was sleeping

  385. he took one of the man's ribs

  386. and closed up the place

  387. with flesh.

  388. Then the Lord God

  389. made a woman

  390. from the rib.

  391. He had taken out

  392. of the man

  393. and he brought her

  394. to the man

  395. and the man said

  396. with his roses

  397. in hands

  398. and his great romance,

  399. this is now

  400. bone of my bones,

  401. flesh of my flesh

  402. and she shall be called

  403. woe man

  404. for she was taken

  405. out of man.

  406. For this reason

  407. a man will leave

  408. his father and mother

  409. and be united

  410. to his wife

  411. and they will become

  412. one flesh.

  413. The man and his wife

  414. were both naked

  415. and they felt

  416. no shame.

  417. So marriage

  418. is part of God's

  419. good design

  420. and order for the world.

  421. It was one of the things

  422. he established

  423. at creation.

  424. It is a gift

  425. to us

  426. but it comes

  427. with special conditions.

  428. We see this

  429. in verses 24.

  430. It is to be exclusive

  431. between a man

  432. and a woman

  433. and not involving

  434. anyone else

  435. or any other partners.

  436. It is also

  437. to be permanent.

  438. They are to leave

  439. their father and mother.

  440. They are not to live in

  441. with their father and mother

  442. but they are to set up

  443. home together

  444. and be united

  445. together.

  446. To be permanent

  447. together.

  448. And it is to be sexual

  449. as they become

  450. one flesh.

  451. A seal of their

  452. commitment

  453. to one another.

  454. Now while all of this

  455. is true

  456. it doesn't tell us

  457. what the real purpose

  458. of marriage is.

  459. If you ask people today

  460. why they get married

  461. you will get a range

  462. of answers.

  463. You will get something

  464. like this

  465. because I love him.

  466. Because I want to spend

  467. the rest of my days

  468. with her.

  469. So I can have sex.

  470. To get legal status

  471. and benefit

  472. from the tax breaks.

  473. Because I am lonely

  474. and needed security.

  475. There are all the reasons

  476. people might give.

  477. But none of those

  478. is the reason

  479. that God gives.

  480. Look at chapter 2

  481. verse 18.

  482. The Lord God said

  483. it is not good

  484. for the man

  485. to be alone.

  486. I will make

  487. a suitable helper

  488. for him.

  489. Now when God

  490. says that

  491. we read it

  492. and we think

  493. poor Adam

  494. he is all alone.

  495. He needs someone

  496. to satisfy

  497. his loneliness.

  498. And that is why

  499. you get married

  500. so that you are

  501. not lonely anymore.

  502. But that is not

  503. what he actually

  504. says is it?

  505. God does not say

  506. I am going to

  507. make a suitable

  508. companion.

  509. No, God says

  510. I am going to

  511. make a suitable

  512. helper.

  513. And it is the same

  514. in verse 20.

  515. In the middle

  516. of verse 20

  517. but for Adam

  518. no suitable

  519. helper was found.

  520. So God did

  521. the rib thing

  522. and he got a woman

  523. and he presented

  524. the woman

  525. before the man

  526. and there became

  527. one flesh.

  528. Now the purpose

  529. for them coming

  530. together

  531. the reason why

  532. God brought

  533. them together

  534. we have to go

  535. back to Genesis

    Genesis 1:27

  536. chapter 1

  537. verse 27.

  538. And there we read

  539. in chapter 1

  540. verse 27

  541. God created man

  542. in his own image.

  543. In the image

  544. of God

  545. he created him

  546. male and female.

  547. He created them.

  548. God blessed

  549. them and he said

  550. to them

  551. be fruitful

  552. and increase

  553. in number

  554. fill the earth

  555. and subdue it

  556. rule over the fish

  557. of the sea

  558. and the birds

  559. of the air

  560. and over every

  561. living creature

  562. that moves

  563. on the ground.

  564. So the man

  565. and the woman

  566. were to come

  567. together for the

  568. purpose of being

  569. fruitful

  570. that they would

  571. increase in number

  572. so that they

  573. would have kids.

  574. But that's

  575. not all.

  576. Together

  577. they are to

  578. rule over

  579. the world

  580. in which

  581. they live.

  582. They are to

  583. rule over it.

  584. They are to

  585. care for the

  586. world in which

  587. they live.

  588. They are to

  589. manage it.

  590. Now if Adam

  591. was to do this

  592. on his own

  593. it would be

  594. a pretty big

  595. task wouldn't

  596. it?

  597. He couldn't do

  598. all that work

  599. on his own.

  600. He needed a

  601. helper.

  602. Somebody who

  603. would come

  604. alongside and

  605. help in the

  606. work.

  607. And so

  608. a woman was

  609. provided.

  610. And to be

  611. honest

  612. the man and

  613. woman they

  614. couldn't do

  615. it on their

  616. own either.

  617. They needed

  618. a family.

  619. So God

  620. had said they

  621. were to be

  622. fruitful and

  623. increase.

  624. They were to

  625. have a family

  626. of gardeners

  627. to take care

  628. of God's

  629. good creation.

  630. Now of course

  631. that doesn't

  632. mean that they

  633. all headed off

  634. to university

  635. to become

  636. horticulturalists.

  637. Gardeners is

  638. simply a

  639. metaphor for

  640. serving God

  641. the way that

  642. he has

  643. planned.

  644. Christopher

  645. Ash,

  646. the author,

  647. put it in

  648. his book,

  649. like this.

  650. It's called

  651. Married for

  652. God.

  653. And this is

  654. what he says,

  655. as we rejoice

  656. with the

  657. lovers in

  658. the garden,

  659. we must not

  660. forget that

  661. there is work

  662. to be done.

  663. The garden

  664. needs gardening.

  665. God's world

  666. needs careful

  667. watch and

  668. careful work.

  669. You see,

  670. God's purpose

  671. for marriage

  672. is mission.

  673. This is God's

  674. mission for

  675. his people.

  676. people.

  677. It's not

  678. just to

  679. meet the

  680. need of

  681. loneliness.

  682. It's not

  683. just so

  684. people can

  685. have sex.

  686. It's about

  687. serving God's

  688. greater plan

  689. and purpose.

  690. And as we

  691. look at the

  692. world today,

  693. we see that

  694. over the

  695. centuries,

  696. people have

  697. been fruitful.

  698. The world

  699. has been

  700. populated.

  701. They have

  702. obeyed the

  703. command.

  704. There's now

  705. over 10

  706. billion people

  707. in the

  708. world.

  709. But rather

  710. than gardeners

  711. who care

  712. for the

  713. world,

  714. we've become

  715. vandals,

  716. haven't we?

  717. Mankind

  718. has wrecked

  719. the world

  720. in which we

  721. live.

  722. We don't

  723. take care

  724. of it.

  725. And the

  726. world is

  727. broken,

  728. not just

  729. physically,

  730. but socially.

  731. Marriages

  732. break up,

  733. families fall

  734. apart,

  735. children are

  736. having to

  737. live with

  738. people who

  739. aren't their

  740. parents.

  741. And socially

  742. things are

  743. broken down,

  744. and morally

  745. and spiritually.

  746. And this

  747. is the

  748. world in

  749. which we

  750. live.

  751. And God

  752. has a

  753. purpose for

  754. the marriage

  755. unit in

  756. the context

  757. of all this

  758. mess.

  759. To quote

  760. again from

  761. Christopher

  762. Ash,

  763. he says,

  764. the creator

  765. entrusts to

  766. married couples

  767. the awesome

  768. privilege and

  769. responsibility of

  770. procreating

  771. potential gardeners

  772. to join his

  773. team.

  774. In other

  775. words,

  776. to build a

  777. family.

  778. They are to

  779. work,

  780. to teach,

  781. to discipline

  782. and pray

  783. that they

  784. will grow

  785. up into

  786. adult actual

  787. gardeners who

  788. learn to

  789. love God

  790. and care

  791. for his

  792. world.

  793. So God's

  794. whole design,

  795. his whole

  796. purpose for

  797. marriage is

  798. to be like a

  799. little unit

  800. living under

  801. God's rule

  802. within the

  803. community in

  804. which they

  805. live,

  806. love.

  807. Demonstrating

  808. to the

  809. world and

  810. witnessing to

  811. the world

  812. what it

  813. actually looks

  814. like to

  815. live under

  816. God's care

  817. and under

  818. his rule

  819. and to

  820. express God's

  821. love out

  822. through the

  823. family to

  824. others.

  825. So marriage

  826. is a witness

  827. and a

  828. demonstration of

  829. how we should

  830. live in this

  831. world.

  832. It's all part

  833. of God's

  834. mission and

  835. it is God's

  836. means for

  837. bringing change

  838. and healing

  839. to a broken

  840. and a

  841. hurting world.

  842. So marriage

  843. isn't just

  844. something that's

  845. kind of come

  846. up from

  847. nowhere.

  848. It was God's

  849. design from

  850. the very

  851. beginning to

  852. show people

  853. what it is

  854. to live

  855. orderly and

  856. correctly in

  857. God's world.

  858. So that

  859. kind of looks

  860. at the first

  861. thing, a

  862. definition if

  863. you like,

  864. of what

  865. marriage is.

  866. Which brings

  867. us on to,

  868. well, why

  869. should we

  870. marry?

  871. Why should

  872. we marry?

  873. And we

  874. need to

  875. take all

  876. of what

  877. we've said

  878. so far and

  879. bring it with

  880. us back to

  881. 1 Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 7 chapter mention

  882. chapter 7.

  883. Because that

  884. is the

  885. foundation to

  886. which Paul

  887. builds the

  888. rest of

  889. what he

  890. goes on to

  891. say.

  892. Now while

  893. mission may

  894. be the

  895. primary reason

  896. for marriage,

  897. and I want

  898. to underline

  899. primary,

  900. there is also

  901. a very

  902. practical

  903. reason.

  904. Look at

  905. 1 Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 7:1

  906. chapter 7

  907. verses 1

  908. and 2.

  909. Now he

  910. said,

  911. for the

  912. matters you

  913. wrote about,

  914. it is good

  915. for a man

  916. not to

  917. marry,

  918. but since

  919. there is so

  920. much immorality,

  921. each man

  922. should have

  923. his own

  924. wife,

  925. and each

  926. woman her

  927. own

  928. husband.

  929. Verse

  930. 8.

  931. Now to

  932. the unmarried

  933. and the

  934. widows,

  935. I say,

  936. it is good

  937. for them to

  938. stay unmarried

  939. as I

  940. am,

  941. and we'll

  942. be looking

  943. at that

  944. more next

  945. week.

  946. But if

  947. they cannot

  948. control

  949. themselves,

  950. they should

  951. marry,

  952. for it is

  953. better to

  954. marry than

  955. to burn

  956. with passion.

  957. Now Corinth

  958. was known

  959. for its

  960. sexual freedom

  961. and its

  962. loose

  963. lifestyle.

  964. In fact,

  965. it was so

  966. prominent

  967. that it

  968. had become

  969. integrated

  970. into the

  971. life of

  972. the church.

  973. So have a

  974. look back at

  975. chapter 5,

  976. verse 1.

  977. chapter 5,

  978. verse 1.

  979. It is actually

  980. reported that

  981. there is sexual

  982. immorality among

  983. you, and of a

  984. kind that does

  985. not even occur

  986. even among the

  987. pagans, amongst

  988. those who aren't

  989. Christians.

  990. A man has

  991. his father's

  992. wife.

  993. So somebody's

  994. run off with

  995. his stepmother.

  996. And in

  997. chapter 6,

  998. verse 16.

  999. As quick as

  1000. they were to

  1001. go off to

  1002. the prayer

  1003. meeting on

  1004. a Wednesday

  1005. night,

  1006. they were as

  1007. quick to run

  1008. down to visit

  1009. the local

  1010. prostitute.

  1011. Verse 16 of

  1012. chapter 6.

  1013. Do you know

  1014. that he who

  1015. unites himself

  1016. with a

  1017. prostitute is

  1018. one with her

  1019. in body?

  1020. For it is

  1021. said the two

  1022. will become

  1023. one flesh.

  1024. Verse 18.

  1025. Flee from

  1026. sexual immorality.

  1027. So it was an

  1028. anything-goes

  1029. society,

  1030. immorality, and

  1031. it was becoming

  1032. acceptable within

  1033. church life.

  1034. And so Paul's

  1035. pastoral response

  1036. is so very

  1037. practical.

  1038. Verse 2 of

  1039. chapter 7.

  1040. Since there is

  1041. so much

  1042. immorality,

  1043. each man should

  1044. have his own

  1045. wife, and each

  1046. woman should have

  1047. her own husband.

  1048. So he's saying

  1049. to them very

  1050. clearly, there is

  1051. a place for

  1052. sexual expression.

  1053. But it's not

  1054. down in the

  1055. local brothel.

  1056. And it's not

  1057. with your

  1058. stepmother.

  1059. It's to be

  1060. within the

  1061. context of

  1062. marriage.

  1063. Now, listening

  1064. here, we may be

  1065. trying to relate

  1066. all of this to

  1067. us, and you

  1068. might not be

  1069. particularly

  1070. attracted to

  1071. your stepmother

  1072. or stepfather

  1073. if you have

  1074. one.

  1075. And you

  1076. might be

  1077. visiting the

  1078. local brothel.

  1079. But we

  1080. can't deny

  1081. the sexual

  1082. temptation that

  1083. surrounds us

  1084. every day.

  1085. Easy access

  1086. to internet

  1087. porn in the

  1088. chat rooms.

  1089. Films and

  1090. TV programs.

  1091. Our culture

  1092. is continually

  1093. bombarding us,

  1094. telling us that

  1095. sexual freedom

  1096. is good.

  1097. It's satisfying

  1098. and it's

  1099. fulfilling, and

  1100. it's okay.

  1101. Everybody else

  1102. is at it, so

  1103. why don't

  1104. you?

  1105. And the

  1106. point is

  1107. simply this,

  1108. that it's

  1109. actually very

  1110. hard to

  1111. remain very

  1112. pure in a

  1113. sex-crazed

  1114. world.

  1115. The sex

  1116. drive is

  1117. very real,

  1118. and when

  1119. continually

  1120. aroused by

  1121. our culture,

  1122. and when

  1123. it's driven

  1124. to the heart

  1125. through temptation,

  1126. it is very

  1127. difficult for

  1128. us all,

  1129. whoever we

  1130. are, to

  1131. live rightly.

  1132. So to

  1133. save and

  1134. to help the

  1135. poor Christian

  1136. who is

  1137. trying to

  1138. live a

  1139. pure life

  1140. in this

  1141. mad society,

  1142. and let's

  1143. face it,

  1144. our society

  1145. is no

  1146. different today,

  1147. so to

  1148. try and

  1149. help the

  1150. Christian who

  1151. is trying to

  1152. live a

  1153. pure life,

  1154. Paul says,

  1155. get married.

  1156. Look at

  1157. verse 9.

  1158. But if

  1159. they cannot

  1160. control

  1161. themselves,

  1162. if they

  1163. can't live

  1164. properly,

  1165. they should

  1166. marry,

  1167. for it is

  1168. better to

  1169. marry than

  1170. to burn

  1171. with passion.

  1172. Now some

  1173. of you know

  1174. that Kirstie

  1175. and I

  1176. were met

  1177. and engaged

  1178. and married

  1179. within nine

  1180. months,

  1181. so it was

  1182. quite clear

  1183. that Kirstie

  1184. was burning

  1185. with passion

  1186. and she

  1187. couldn't keep

  1188. away from

  1189. me.

  1190. But what

  1191. Paul is

  1192. saying here

  1193. in this

  1194. is,

  1195. look,

  1196. don't be

  1197. trying to

  1198. force people

  1199. to remain

  1200. single.

  1201. Don't be

  1202. trying to

  1203. force people

  1204. to live a

  1205. celibate life.

  1206. It's not the

  1207. way to deal

  1208. with it.

  1209. We'll look at

  1210. this next week,

  1211. but he says

  1212. there is a

  1213. gift for

  1214. singleness

  1215. and there is

  1216. a gift for

  1217. getting married.

  1218. And he is

  1219. saying in a

  1220. very practical

  1221. way,

  1222. that the

  1223. sexual

  1224. passion

  1225. that burns

  1226. within us,

  1227. the only

  1228. place in

  1229. which it

  1230. is cooled

  1231. is within

  1232. the context

  1233. of marriage.

  1234. And it

  1235. saves you

  1236. from a

  1237. life of

  1238. brokenness

  1239. and a

  1240. life of

  1241. destruction.

  1242. And instead

  1243. what happens

  1244. within the

  1245. marriage unit,

  1246. it becomes

  1247. the context

  1248. for bringing

  1249. help and

  1250. bringing healing

  1251. to a

  1252. sexually

  1253. disorientated

  1254. world.

  1255. world.

  1256. So he's

  1257. being very

  1258. practical about

  1259. these things.

  1260. And I want

  1261. to speak,

  1262. I suppose,

  1263. generally but

  1264. specifically to

  1265. younger people.

  1266. Don't be

  1267. following the

  1268. ways of the

  1269. world.

  1270. Sexual freedom

  1271. is not good.

  1272. It will lead

  1273. to all kinds of

  1274. difficulties and

  1275. all kinds of

  1276. hurts and

  1277. suffering.

  1278. We must

  1279. follow God's

  1280. good order.

  1281. He has

  1282. designed the

  1283. world the

  1284. way it is

  1285. and this

  1286. is the

  1287. right way

  1288. to live.

  1289. There is a

  1290. place for

  1291. sexual passion

  1292. and that is

  1293. only within

  1294. the context

  1295. of marriage.

  1296. But I

  1297. suppose as we

  1298. look at this,

  1299. it does raise

  1300. the question,

  1301. and we're all

  1302. probably wanting

  1303. to ask it,

  1304. but far too

  1305. embarrassed to

  1306. ask it,

  1307. does that mean

  1308. that when I get

  1309. married that I

  1310. can have sex

  1311. whenever I want

  1312. to?

  1313. Well, I

  1314. don't think

  1315. that's what

  1316. he's saying.

  1317. There is a

  1318. primary reason

  1319. for marriage

  1320. and that's

  1321. mission,

  1322. God's design

  1323. and God's

  1324. order.

  1325. There's a

  1326. very practical

  1327. reason as

  1328. well as we

  1329. live in a

  1330. very sexual

  1331. immoral world

  1332. and we have

  1333. those struggles

  1334. and there's a

  1335. way to deal

  1336. with it,

  1337. but there's

  1338. also a way

  1339. in which we

  1340. should conduct

  1341. our marriage.

  1342. Look at

  1343. verse 3.

  1344. The husband

  1345. should fulfill

  1346. his marital

  1347. duty to

  1348. his wife

  1349. and likewise

  1350. the wife

  1351. to her

  1352. husband.

  1353. Now,

  1354. contrary to

  1355. what many

  1356. people think,

  1357. and I'm

  1358. talking of

  1359. people outside

  1360. the church,

  1361. perhaps even

  1362. within the

  1363. church as

  1364. well,

  1365. God is

  1366. actually for

  1367. sex.

  1368. He's not

  1369. against it.

  1370. It's not a

  1371. naughty thing

  1372. or a bad

  1373. thing.

  1374. It's a good

  1375. thing.

  1376. And if you

  1377. want to know

  1378. more about

  1379. that,

  1380. have a read

  1381. of Proverbs

    Proverbs 5 chapter mention

  1382. chapter 5

  1383. or read

  1384. through Song

  1385. of Solomon

  1386. and you

  1387. will see

  1388. that it

  1389. is really

  1390. celebrated.

  1391. But again,

  1392. it is only

  1393. to be in

  1394. the context

  1395. of marriage.

  1396. And spouses,

  1397. and here I

  1398. speak particularly

  1399. to spouses,

  1400. we have

  1401. responsibilities

  1402. to each

  1403. other,

  1404. as he

  1405. explains in

  1406. verse 4.

  1407. Have a look

  1408. at verse 4.

  1409. The wife

  1410. this body

  1411. does not

  1412. belong to

  1413. her alone,

  1414. but also

  1415. to her

  1416. husband.

  1417. But he

  1418. doesn't stop

  1419. there.

  1420. There's an

  1421. equality.

  1422. In the

  1423. same way,

  1424. the husband's

  1425. body does

  1426. not belong

  1427. to him

  1428. alone,

  1429. but also

  1430. to his

  1431. wife.

  1432. Now,

  1433. what he's

  1434. talking about

  1435. here is,

  1436. I'm calling

  1437. mutual

  1438. submission

  1439. and service.

  1440. Now,

  1441. before you

  1442. all come

  1443. down on

  1444. me like

  1445. a ton

  1446. of bricks,

  1447. let me

  1448. try to

  1449. explain and

  1450. work this

  1451. one out.

  1452. Our

  1453. culture

  1454. views

  1455. sexual

  1456. activity

  1457. as all

  1458. about

  1459. fulfilling

  1460. my needs

  1461. and my

  1462. wants.

  1463. It's all

  1464. very me

  1465. centered.

  1466. It says

  1467. get what

  1468. you can

  1469. when you

  1470. can.

  1471. You

  1472. treat the

  1473. person

  1474. however you

  1475. like to

  1476. satisfy your

  1477. own needs.

  1478. So the

  1479. person who

  1480. you are

  1481. with is

  1482. just simply

  1483. treated as

  1484. an object,

  1485. a means of

  1486. gratification.

  1487. And what

  1488. that does

  1489. is it

  1490. just degrades

  1491. people.

  1492. It destroys

  1493. who they

  1494. are.

  1495. It creates

  1496. fear and

  1497. it creates

  1498. mistrust.

  1499. That's the

  1500. way in which

  1501. the world

  1502. operates.

  1503. But that's

  1504. not the

  1505. way it

  1506. has to

  1507. be with

  1508. marriage.

  1509. In

  1510. marriage,

  1511. it's about

  1512. submission.

  1513. submission.

  1514. You don't

  1515. take from

  1516. the other

  1517. person.

  1518. You give

  1519. to the

  1520. other

  1521. person.

  1522. You don't

  1523. demand from

  1524. your wife.

  1525. You seek

  1526. their good.

  1527. You don't

  1528. force something

  1529. from your

  1530. husband.

  1531. You want

  1532. their best.

  1533. Your body,

  1534. when you get

  1535. married,

  1536. when we

  1537. looked at

  1538. Genesis,

  1539. the two

  1540. become one

  1541. flesh.

  1542. When you

  1543. come together,

  1544. and as it

  1545. says here in

  1546. verse 4,

  1547. your body

  1548. doesn't

  1549. belong to

  1550. you alone

  1551. anymore.

  1552. It belongs

  1553. also to

  1554. the other.

  1555. And that

  1556. means that

  1557. it's not

  1558. about your

  1559. rights and

  1560. what you

  1561. want,

  1562. but it's

  1563. about their

  1564. rights and

  1565. what they

  1566. need.

  1567. So within

  1568. the context

  1569. of marriage,

  1570. you are

  1571. submitting

  1572. yourself to

  1573. the other

  1574. person.

  1575. in

  1576. marriage,

  1577. you are

  1578. entrusting

  1579. yourself,

  1580. and it

  1581. is a

  1582. trust

  1583. exercise

  1584. in coming

  1585. to be

  1586. married,

  1587. you are

  1588. entrusting

  1589. yourself

  1590. into the

  1591. loving care

  1592. because you

  1593. know that

  1594. you are

  1595. going to

  1596. be treated

  1597. sensitively,

  1598. carefully,

  1599. and lovingly.

  1600. So

  1601. submission is

  1602. a mutual

  1603. submission,

  1604. one to

  1605. the other.

  1606. In

  1607. summary,

  1608. we could

  1609. put it like

  1610. this,

  1611. that sexual

  1612. expression,

  1613. expression,

  1614. sexual

  1615. expression

  1616. within the

  1617. marriage,

  1618. should never

  1619. be demanded,

  1620. and it

  1621. should never

  1622. be withheld.

  1623. Now that's

  1624. all he says

  1625. about that

  1626. in these

  1627. verses.

  1628. It doesn't

  1629. say how

  1630. often,

  1631. how much,

  1632. and that's

  1633. for each

  1634. couple here

  1635. to work out

  1636. for themselves,

  1637. and that

  1638. will be

  1639. different

  1640. for every

  1641. couple.

  1642. And they've

  1643. got to

  1644. work that

  1645. out within

  1646. a loving

  1647. and caring

  1648. relationship.

  1649. But the

  1650. first thing

  1651. is mutual

  1652. submission.

  1653. Not about

  1654. your rights,

  1655. but their

  1656. rights.

  1657. But it's

  1658. not just

  1659. mutual

  1660. submission,

  1661. there's also

  1662. to be

  1663. mutual

  1664. agreement.

  1665. Look at

  1666. verse 5.

  1667. Do not

  1668. deprive

  1669. each other

  1670. except by

  1671. mutual

  1672. consent

  1673. and for

  1674. a time,

  1675. so that

  1676. you may

  1677. devote

  1678. yourselves

  1679. to prayer.

  1680. Then come

  1681. together again

  1682. so that

  1683. Satan will

  1684. not tempt

  1685. you because

  1686. your lack

  1687. of self-control.

  1688. Now,

  1689. I just

  1690. find scripture

  1691. so practical,

  1692. isn't it?

  1693. There are

  1694. times when

  1695. the married

  1696. couple need

  1697. to put

  1698. everything

  1699. else to

  1700. one side

  1701. and give

  1702. themselves

  1703. not to

  1704. each other

  1705. but to

  1706. prayer.

  1707. And the

  1708. prayer life

  1709. of a

  1710. married

  1711. couple

  1712. is crucial

  1713. and time

  1714. needs to

  1715. be given

  1716. to pray

  1717. for specific

  1718. needs,

  1719. not least

  1720. for the

  1721. marriage

  1722. itself

  1723. and for

  1724. the

  1725. family.

  1726. And once

  1727. again,

  1728. as it

  1729. was in

  1730. verse 4,

  1731. this isn't

  1732. to be

  1733. forced

  1734. or demanded,

  1735. but it

  1736. is to be

  1737. agreed upon.

  1738. There is

  1739. to be

  1740. mutual

  1741. consent.

  1742. Now,

  1743. when I was

  1744. reading through

  1745. this,

  1746. I found

  1747. it a

  1748. real

  1749. challenge.

  1750. When was

  1751. the last

  1752. time,

  1753. and I

  1754. speak again

  1755. to married

  1756. couples,

  1757. when was

  1758. the last

  1759. time that

  1760. you took

  1761. time out

  1762. to pray

  1763. together

  1764. as husband

  1765. and wife?

  1766. When did

  1767. you last

  1768. do that?

  1769. Can you

  1770. remember?

  1771. I

  1772. think there's

  1773. a real

  1774. imbalance

  1775. in our

  1776. lives.

  1777. People

  1778. will rush

  1779. to the

  1780. counselor

  1781. because their

  1782. sex life

  1783. is in

  1784. trouble,

  1785. but you

  1786. ever hear

  1787. of people

  1788. rushing to

  1789. their pastor

  1790. or to

  1791. somebody

  1792. else because

  1793. their prayer

  1794. life is

  1795. in trouble?

  1796. there are

  1797. times when

  1798. we have

  1799. to kneel

  1800. beside the

  1801. bed instead

  1802. of jumping

  1803. into the

  1804. bed.

  1805. And I

  1806. want to

  1807. encourage us

  1808. to think

  1809. about what

  1810. it is to

  1811. pray together

  1812. as couples.

  1813. You need

  1814. to plan.

  1815. I need

  1816. to plan.

  1817. to take

  1818. time out

  1819. with my

  1820. wife.

  1821. To pray

  1822. together.

  1823. To pray

  1824. for your

  1825. children if

  1826. you have

  1827. children.

  1828. To pray

  1829. not only

  1830. that they

  1831. would have

  1832. a great

  1833. career and

  1834. they'd be

  1835. very healthy

  1836. and successful,

  1837. but ultimately

  1838. that your

  1839. children would

  1840. come to

  1841. love God

  1842. and follow

  1843. God.

  1844. That they

  1845. would become

  1846. people who

  1847. would example

  1848. what a

  1849. marriage is

  1850. meant to

  1851. look like.

  1852. I had

  1853. parents who

  1854. prayed for

  1855. me in

  1856. that way.

  1857. Right from

  1858. the very

  1859. beginning,

  1860. if it was

  1861. God's will,

  1862. they prayed

  1863. that I

  1864. would have

  1865. a wife.

  1866. And the

  1867. first day

  1868. that I

  1869. brought

  1870. Kirstie

  1871. back home,

  1872. in a very

  1873. embarrassing

  1874. way,

  1875. my mother

  1876. said,

  1877. oh,

  1878. you're the

  1879. one we've

  1880. been praying

  1881. for.

  1882. How

  1883. embarrassing

  1884. was that?

  1885. Anyway,

  1886. thanks,

  1887. mum.

  1888. She still

  1889. stayed with

  1890. me.

  1891. It was

  1892. Kirstie,

  1893. by the way.

  1894. Although she

  1895. called her

  1896. by the

  1897. wrong name,

  1898. she called

  1899. her Denise

  1900. instead of

  1901. Kirstie.

  1902. I'll tell

  1903. you about

  1904. Denise

  1905. another day.

  1906. But the

  1907. point is

  1908. that marriage

  1909. is good.

  1910. Marriage is

  1911. important.

  1912. Sorry,

  1913. prayer is

  1914. important.

  1915. And we

  1916. need to

  1917. conduct that

  1918. rightfully and

  1919. in the proper

  1920. place within

  1921. marriage.

  1922. But,

  1923. and there's

  1924. a big but

  1925. there in

  1926. verse 5,

  1927. never

  1928. use prayer

  1929. as an

  1930. excuse

  1931. for

  1932. withholding

  1933. yourself

  1934. from your

  1935. spouse.

  1936. So,

  1937. none of

  1938. this,

  1939. sorry dear,

  1940. can we

  1941. pray again

  1942. tonight.

  1943. Look at

  1944. what it

  1945. says at

  1946. the end

  1947. of verse

  1948. 5.

  1949. Come

  1950. together

  1951. again

  1952. so that

  1953. Satan

  1954. will not

  1955. tempt

  1956. you

  1957. because of

  1958. your lack

  1959. of self

  1960. control.

  1961. he is

  1962. just so

  1963. practical.

  1964. There are

  1965. enough

  1966. temptations

  1967. outside of

  1968. marriage,

  1969. there are

  1970. enough

  1971. things

  1972. bombarding

  1973. us.

  1974. Marriages

  1975. are under

  1976. so much

  1977. pressure

  1978. that married

  1979. people should

  1980. live in such

  1981. a way that

  1982. they don't

  1983. give Satan

  1984. a chance

  1985. to ruin

  1986. and destroy

  1987. the marriage

  1988. relationship.

  1989. So,

  1990. there is

  1991. to be

  1992. mutual

  1993. submission

  1994. and there

  1995. is to

  1996. be

  1997. mutual

  1998. agreement.

  1999. Which

  2000. brings us

  2001. to,

  2002. I suppose,

  2003. our summary,

  2004. the point

  2005. of marriage.

  2006. Look at

  2007. verse 6.

  2008. He says,

  2009. I say

  2010. this as

  2011. a concession,

  2012. not as

  2013. a command.

  2014. I wish

  2015. that all

  2016. men were

  2017. as I am,

  2018. but each

  2019. man has

  2020. his own

  2021. gift from

  2022. God.

  2023. One has

  2024. this gift

  2025. and another

  2026. has that.

  2027. Marriage

  2028. is a gift

  2029. from God.

  2030. It's a

  2031. wonderful gift

  2032. from God.

  2033. And we

  2034. will see

  2035. that next

  2036. week that

  2037. singleness

  2038. is also

  2039. a gift

  2040. from God.

  2041. And what

  2042. is said

  2043. here in

  2044. these few

  2045. verses of

  2046. chapter 7

  2047. is practical

  2048. advice for

  2049. those who

  2050. do get

  2051. married.

  2052. So,

  2053. when we

  2054. look at

  2055. verse 6,

  2056. it says,

  2057. I say

  2058. this as a

  2059. concession,

  2060. not as

  2061. a command.

  2062. Paul is

  2063. not

  2064. commanding

  2065. that

  2066. everybody

  2067. gets

  2068. married.

  2069. He's

  2070. not

  2071. saying

  2072. this is

  2073. what

  2074. you

  2075. all

  2076. have

  2077. to

  2078. do.

  2079. And he

  2080. is not

  2081. commanding

  2082. that

  2083. everybody

  2084. has to

  2085. stay

  2086. single.

  2087. But for

  2088. those who

  2089. are married,

  2090. for those

  2091. who are

  2092. going to

  2093. get married,

  2094. this is

  2095. what it

  2096. looks like.

  2097. And we

  2098. need to

  2099. spend time

  2100. reading through

  2101. the passages

  2102. in Scripture

  2103. that tell us

  2104. about marriage

  2105. because sadly

  2106. many marriages

  2107. do break

  2108. down and

  2109. the Christian

  2110. marriage is

  2111. not immune

  2112. to the

  2113. pressures.

  2114. Kirsty and I

  2115. are only married

  2116. still only a few

  2117. years,

  2118. but many of

  2119. our friends,

  2120. or quite a few,

  2121. some of those we

  2122. were in college

  2123. with,

  2124. their marriages

  2125. are no longer

  2126. together.

  2127. And very often

  2128. the reason is

  2129. because people

  2130. begin to look

  2131. outside of

  2132. their marriage,

  2133. they look

  2134. outside of

  2135. their spouse

  2136. to meet

  2137. their own

  2138. selfish needs,

  2139. whether through

  2140. affairs,

  2141. or through

  2142. porn,

  2143. or through

  2144. some other

  2145. means.

  2146. And God's

  2147. word here

  2148. gives us

  2149. some very

  2150. clear direction

  2151. to those

  2152. who are

  2153. married.

  2154. And if we

  2155. follow it,

  2156. it will

  2157. bring unity,

  2158. it will

  2159. deepen

  2160. trust and

  2161. oneness.

  2162. It will

  2163. strengthen

  2164. the relationship.

  2165. And the

  2166. stronger the

  2167. marriage is,

  2168. the more at

  2169. one together

  2170. we are going

  2171. to be,

  2172. and the

  2173. better position

  2174. we are going

  2175. to be in

  2176. to serve

  2177. God's

  2178. ultimate

  2179. purpose.

  2180. And I

  2181. want to

  2182. finish with

  2183. this,

  2184. because this

  2185. is God's

  2186. ultimate

  2187. purpose.

  2188. Marriage

  2189. is

  2190. mission.

  2191. God has

  2192. brought you

  2193. together in

  2194. his plan

  2195. and in

  2196. his design,

  2197. and if you

  2198. have children,

  2199. God has

  2200. blessed you

  2201. with children.

  2202. And he

  2203. is saying

  2204. to you,

  2205. I want

  2206. your marriage

  2207. unit to

  2208. be a light,

  2209. to be a

  2210. witness.

  2211. Your

  2212. marriage is

  2213. to be a

  2214. means of

  2215. bringing

  2216. healing to

  2217. a broken

  2218. world.

  2219. And just

  2220. as much

  2221. as through

  2222. the marriage

  2223. unit,

  2224. God can

  2225. bring healing

  2226. to a broken

  2227. world,

  2228. marriages.

  2229. God can

  2230. also,

  2231. by his

  2232. grace,

  2233. bring healing

  2234. to broken

  2235. marriages.

  2236. God can

  2237. help.

  2238. God can

  2239. restore.

  2240. Having

  2241. difficulties

  2242. and having

  2243. struggles

  2244. is not

  2245. uncommon.

  2246. It's

  2247. normal.

  2248. That's why

  2249. he said

  2250. in verse

  2251. 28,

  2252. those who

  2253. marry will

  2254. face many

  2255. troubles.

  2256. And I

  2257. want to

  2258. spare you

  2259. this.

  2260. So if

  2261. you find

  2262. you are

  2263. going

  2264. through

  2265. struggles

  2266. and you

  2267. are going

  2268. through

  2269. difficulties,

  2270. don't hide

  2271. it.

  2272. Speak to

  2273. somebody.

  2274. Come and

  2275. speak to

  2276. me.

  2277. Come and

  2278. speak to

  2279. Kirsty.

  2280. Go and

  2281. talk to

  2282. an older

  2283. Christian

  2284. that you

  2285. know.

  2286. Because if

  2287. our marriages

  2288. are breaking,

  2289. we can

  2290. heal no

  2291. one.

  2292. First of

  2293. all, we

  2294. must get

  2295. ourselves

  2296. right.

  2297. So,

  2298. this is

  2299. God's

  2300. design for

  2301. marriage.

  2302. It is

  2303. foundational.

  2304. He set it

  2305. out at

  2306. creation.

  2307. And it is

  2308. very practical

  2309. and it

  2310. needs to

  2311. be worked

  2312. on.

  2313. So I

  2314. encourage us

  2315. all to

  2316. think through

  2317. these things

  2318. more.

  2319. Talk it

  2320. through with

  2321. your spouse,

  2322. with your

  2323. husband and

  2324. with your

  2325. wife.

  2326. Seek to

  2327. encourage your

  2328. children in

  2329. the way that

  2330. they should

  2331. go.

  2332. Let's pray

  2333. together.

  2334. God, we

  2335. thank you so

  2336. much that you

  2337. don't leave

  2338. us alone.

  2339. You don't

  2340. just put us

  2341. into this

  2342. world and

  2343. tell us now

  2344. you just

  2345. make the

  2346. best job

  2347. that you

  2348. can.

  2349. but that

  2350. you have

  2351. given us

  2352. your commands

  2353. and your

  2354. direction as

  2355. to how we

  2356. should live,

  2357. particularly

  2358. within marriage.

  2359. Again,

  2360. Father, we

  2361. pray that you

  2362. would protect

  2363. every marriage

  2364. represented here.

  2365. Make it

  2366. strong and

  2367. make it

  2368. healthy.

  2369. May it be a

  2370. witness and a

  2371. demonstration of

  2372. your love.

  2373. may it be a

  2374. mission within

  2375. the community

  2376. where they

  2377. live.

  2378. We pray,

  2379. Father, too,

  2380. that if there

  2381. is any marriage

  2382. that is

  2383. struggling or

  2384. finding it

  2385. difficult at

  2386. this time,

  2387. we pray that

  2388. you would pour

  2389. out your

  2390. grace,

  2391. that you

  2392. would enable

  2393. them to find

  2394. the help and

  2395. the support.

  2396. And we pray

  2397. for each one

  2398. of us here,

  2399. whatever situation

  2400. we find

  2401. ourselves in,

  2402. whether we're

  2403. looking forward

  2404. to marriage,

  2405. whether we're

  2406. looking back

  2407. on marriage,

  2408. that all of

  2409. us would pray

  2410. for one another,

  2411. pray for the

  2412. strengthening of

  2413. the relationships,

  2414. seeking purity

  2415. in every way.

  2416. And we ask,

  2417. Lord, that we

  2418. would ever come

  2419. to you and

  2420. find the

  2421. forgiveness that

  2422. we need for

  2423. where we get

  2424. it wrong.

  2425. Please forgive

  2426. us and help

  2427. us to follow

  2428. your pure and

  2429. good design.

  2430. In Jesus'

  2431. name,

  2432. Amen.

  2433. we're going to

  2434. sing together.

  2435. Amen.

  2436. This song reminds

  2437. us of the love

  2438. of Jesus towards

  2439. us.

  2440. Amen.
