  1. It's on page 1147.

  2. Okay, 1 Corinthians chapter 5, verses 9 to 13.

    1 Corinthians 5:9–13

  3. I have written to you in my letter not to associate with sexually immoral people,

  4. not at all meaning the people of this world who are immoral,

  5. or the greedy and swindlers or idolaters.

  6. In that case, you would have to leave this world.

  7. But now I am writing to you that you must not associate with anyone who calls himself a brother,

  8. but is sexually immoral or greedy, an idolater or a slanderer, a drunkard or a swindler.

  9. With such a man do not even eat.

  10. What business is it of mine to judge those outside the church?

  11. Are you not to judge those inside?

  12. God will judge those outside.

  13. Expel the wicked man from among you.

  14. Let me go down to chapter 6.

  15. I'll start at verse 9, 9 to 13.

  16. Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God?

  17. Do not be deceived.

  18. Neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor male prostitutes,

  19. nor homosexual offenders, nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards,

  20. nor slanders, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.

  21. And that is what some of you were.

  22. But you were washed, you were sanctified,

  23. and you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ

  24. by the Spirit of our God.

  25. Sexual immorality

  26. Everything is permissible for me, but not everything is beneficial.

  27. Everything is permissible for me, but I will not be mastered by anything.

  28. Food is for the stomach, and the stomach for food,

  29. but God will destroy them both.

  30. The body is not meant for sexual immorality,

  31. but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body.

  32. Amen.

  33. Thanks very much, Ian.

  34. Well, I encourage you to take notes.

  35. If you've got your new sheet, there's a space on the back.

  36. If not, there should be another sheet that was handed around,

  37. or a pen at the front.

  38. Feel free to get it,

  39. and to get yourself a Bible if you haven't got one.

  40. There's plenty at the back,

  41. and you can follow through.

  42. Before we start this morning,

  43. I want to say a couple of things.

  44. First, that I'm aware when dealing with the subject of homosexuality,

  45. there are a variety of views and experiences.

  46. So, you may find that as we go through this morning's talk,

  47. there will be times you may agree,

  48. and there may be times you disagree.

  49. And so, I'm just saying that up front.

  50. So, if you've got questions afterwards,

  51. to come and talk to me,

  52. and to encourage you to come to our follow-up discussion this evening.

  53. The second thing that I want to say is that I am a learner.

  54. I don't know all the answers,

  55. and nor do I pretend to.

  56. Trying to understand our sexuality is a very complex matter.

  57. And I speak to you not as a physician,

  58. or as a psychologist,

  59. but simply as a learner and teacher of God's Word.

  60. And that is where we want to base our thinking

  61. and our study this morning.

  62. That as we come together,

  63. we want to hear what God has to say about ourselves,

  64. how He has made us,

  65. and how we are called to live in His world.

  66. So, let's pray as we ask for God's help.

  67. Our Father God, we thank you so much that you have given to us your Word,

  68. so that we know how to live,

  69. and how we have been made.

  70. That we are not just placed here on earth,

  71. trying to make it up,

  72. and trying to figure it out by ourselves.

  73. But you have shown us very clearly.

  74. And we ask, Father, that by your Holy Spirit,

  75. that you would help us to understand,

  76. and to apply it to our lives,

  77. and to our thinking.

  78. If we come with any thoughts and any views,

  79. that we would submit them right now to your Word.

  80. That you would shape our minds,

  81. and our thinking,

  82. so that we become more and more like Christ.

  83. Loving one another,

  84. caring for one another,

  85. and serious with the issues that you are serious with.

  86. So please help us,

  87. we ask in Jesus' name.

  88. Amen.

  89. Well, over the last 20 years,

  90. Ireland has changed from a conservative religious culture

  91. to a more liberal, irreligious culture.

  92. The bedrock of Irish society,

  93. the heterosexual marriage,

  94. is no longer foundational.

  95. Increasingly, we meet people who are living together

  96. with the same sex,

  97. and hardly a week goes by

  98. without some big-named celebrity coming out.

  99. But with all the changes in our culture,

  100. there still seems to be a lot of confusion about homosexuality.

  101. Last year, I had to attend the funeral of my aunt.

  102. And as with most funerals,

  103. it's the opportunity to meet relatives and friends

  104. that you haven't seen in years.

  105. And at this funeral,

  106. I was looking forward to meeting my cousin.

  107. As far as I remember,

  108. I had only ever met him once.

  109. Of course, we had had many family gatherings in the past,

  110. and everybody had always been invited,

  111. except John was always absent.

  112. Leading up to the funeral,

  113. we were told that John was gay,

  114. and was living with his partner for the last 20 years,

  115. and they were now happily married.

  116. Now, the question I had was this.

  117. Why did nobody know?

  118. Why was it all kept a secret for so long?

  119. You see, with all the changes in society,

  120. it seems that people still don't know

  121. how to handle homosexuality.

  122. Those within the gay community

  123. very often fear rejection and isolation,

  124. and have to deal with being ostracized and marginalized.

  125. Those outside the gay community,

  126. it seems, are uneducated in their understanding.

  127. And they often appear homophobic in their attitudes,

  128. and in the jokes that they share.

  129. But that's my experience.

  130. Let me try and make it a little bit more personal for us.

  131. What would you say, or what would you do,

  132. if your son came home one day from school

  133. to tell you that he was more attracted

  134. to the other boys in his class than the girls?

  135. What would you do if a woman and her gay partner

  136. arrived in church saying,

  137. they follow Jesus, they love reading their Bible,

  138. and they would love to be involved here?

  139. What would you do?

  140. You see, these are no longer questions for others

  141. in another place.

  142. These are questions for us.

  143. And so we come this morning to hear

  144. what the Bible has to say about homosexuality.

  145. Well, I think there are three broad responses

  146. that the church gives

  147. to the change in our culture.

  148. Firstly, there are those in the church

  149. who will say,

  150. condemnation.

  151. Read your Bible, they say,

  152. and they'll quote verses like Romans 1, verse 24.

    Romans 1:24

  153. God gave them over in their sinful desires

  154. of their hearts to sexual impurity.

  155. Men committed indecent acts with other men

  156. and received in themselves

  157. the due penalty for their perversion.

  158. Homosexuality, they say,

  159. is God's judgment.

  160. Such people need to be put out of the church.

  161. They need to be reminded

  162. of how they have violated God's commands.

  163. Second, and in response to that attitude,

  164. there are those in the church

  165. who will say, acceptance.

  166. Homosexuality is just as much a part of society

  167. as heterosexuality.

  168. So we need to grow up

  169. and we need to get on with it.

  170. Lisa Miller, who is a theologian

  171. and a commentator said,

  172. speaking about the Bible,

  173. a mature view of scriptural authority

  174. requires us, as we have in the past,

  175. to move beyond literalism.

  176. The Bible was written for a world

  177. so unknown to our own,

  178. it's impossible to apply its rules

  179. at face value to ours.

  180. In other words, it's saying

  181. we can't take the likes of Romans seriously.

  182. Those texts were for another age.

  183. They don't apply to us anymore.

  184. Well, I don't know about you,

  185. but neither of those views settle with me.

  186. I don't think either of those views are an option.

  187. Both are a distortion of Scripture

  188. and both misunderstand how we handle Scripture.

  189. So we need a third way.

  190. And the third way I'm going to call

  191. a gospel way.

  192. And we're going to look under it

  193. in two ways.

  194. First, God's good design

  195. and then God's great hope.

  196. So we start with God's good design,

  197. who we are.

  198. First of all,

  199. we must see ourselves

  200. as human beings

  201. created in God's image.

  202. Back in Genesis 1,

    Genesis 1:26–27

  203. verses 26 to 27,

  204. it says this,

  205. Then God said,

  206. Let us make man in our image,

  207. in our likeness.

  208. So God created man

  209. in his own image.

  210. And in the image of God,

  211. he created him.

  212. Male and female,

  213. he created them.

  214. You see,

  215. all too often,

  216. we are grouped or categorized

  217. according to our sexual orientation.

  218. On the one hand,

  219. there is the gay community

  220. and people get lumped there.

  221. And then there are others

  222. who are in the straight community

  223. and they get lumped there.

  224. We find our identity in a group

  225. and with people

  226. who we perceive to be like us.

  227. But that's unhelpful

  228. because we first need to see ourselves,

  229. not how we see ourselves

  230. or how other people might see us,

  231. but how God sees us.

  232. You see,

  233. we were created by God

  234. in his likeness.

  235. We are his image bearers.

  236. So no matter who we are,

  237. what background we come from,

  238. we are his image bearers,

  239. every single human being.

  240. Now as we'll see in a minute,

  241. that image has become distorted

  242. by our choices

  243. and the choices of others.

  244. And it is God's purpose and plan

  245. that that image is restored fully in us.

  246. But as one writer helpfully put it,

  247. God's primary desire

  248. is not that we should become heterosexual,

  249. but that we would become more like Christ.

  250. We were created like God,

  251. we are to become like God,

  252. So it's only by looking to God

  253. and seeing who he is

  254. that I can really understand who I am.

  255. So God views us

  256. and God sees us as unique individuals,

  257. people who are made in his image,

  258. in his likeness,

  259. who are equally loved,

  260. and we must be treated as such.

  261. Our first identity

  262. is that we are made in his image.

  263. So that's who we are.

  264. And second,

  265. well how should we live?

  266. Well God has shown us

  267. how we should live

  268. in relationship with each other.

  269. Because we are made in God's image,

  270. we are relational beings.

  271. God is a relational being.

  272. The Trinity,

  273. Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

  274. They are at one together,

  275. they relate together.

  276. And we were made

  277. for the same intimacy,

  278. primarily with the triune God.

  279. But also,

  280. with each other.

  281. And we are told

  282. how that should be expressed.

  283. And we've been looking at that

  284. over the last few weeks

  285. in 1 Corinthians chapter 7,

    1 Corinthians 7 chapter mention

  286. as we've been looking at

  287. marriage and singleness.

  288. And in 1 Corinthians 7,

  289. we see God's purpose very clearly.

  290. That marriage

  291. is always between a man and a woman

  292. in an exclusive,

  293. committed relationship.

  294. friendship.

  295. And sexual intimacy

  296. is part of God's

  297. good design for marriage.

  298. And one of the primary reasons

  299. for that

  300. is procreation.

  301. God has designed

  302. the man and the woman

  303. so that they can have

  304. children.

  305. Children who can work together

  306. to grow up

  307. to serve and love God

  308. and live under God.

  309. Man and another man

  310. and a woman

  311. with another woman

  312. can't have children.

  313. It's not part of God's design.

  314. So marriage is very clearly

  315. a part of his

  316. creation order.

  317. Singleness,

  318. on the other hand,

  319. is also encouraged,

  320. as we saw that

  321. in chapter 7,

  322. but without

  323. sexual intimacy.

  324. Relationships

  325. between single people

  326. are to be encouraged

  327. and to be encouraged

  328. across the sexes,

  329. but without

  330. engaging in

  331. sexual activity.

  332. to unite yourself

  333. with someone sexually

  334. outside of marriage

  335. is to be going

  336. against God's

  337. good design.

  338. So God, again,

  339. has not only shown us

  340. who we are

  341. made in his image,

  342. he has shown us

  343. how we should live

  344. in relationship

  345. with each other

  346. and how we should live

  347. in his world.

  348. So for all of us,

  349. whoever we are,

  350. there is either

  351. marriage,

  352. which is always

  353. heterosexual,

  354. always between a man

  355. and a woman.

  356. Or,

  357. there is singleness,

  358. which is either

  359. heterosexual,

  360. you stay in your own,

  361. or homosexual.

  362. Now,

  363. let me try

  364. and explain that

  365. a little bit more

  366. as we think

  367. of homosexual

  368. behavior

  369. and homosexual

  370. orientation.

  371. You can just

  372. go back one,

  373. that's all right,

  374. saviour.

  375. You mightn't have

  376. this on your notes,

  377. it's just an extra

  378. homosexual behavior

  379. and homosexual

  380. orientation.

  381. We've got to

  382. distinguish

  383. between the two.

  384. Homosexual orientation

  385. is to be

  386. attracted to

  387. someone of the

  388. same sex.

  389. Homosexual behavior

  390. is to be

  391. sexually active

  392. with someone

  393. of the same sex.

  394. Now,

  395. as we have seen,

  396. sexual intimacy

  397. is only to be

  398. expressed

  399. within the context

  400. of God's

  401. design

  402. for marriage.

  403. So the Bible,

  404. we discover,

  405. is always

  406. negative

  407. to homosexual

  408. behavior,

  409. but it never

  410. condemns

  411. or judges

  412. homosexual

  413. orientation.

  414. Because the issue

  415. in Scripture

  416. is not

  417. homosexuality,

  418. but purity.

  419. The Bible

  420. does not

  421. say

  422. straight

  423. sex

  424. is

  425. good,

  426. but gay

  427. sex

  428. is bad.

  429. It doesn't

  430. say that.

  431. Now,

  432. what the Bible

  433. says is,

  434. in Ephesians 5,

    Ephesians 5:3

  435. verse 3,

  436. there must

  437. not be

  438. a hint

  439. of sexual

  440. immorality.

  441. You see,

  442. whatever our

  443. orientation,

  444. we are all

  445. called

  446. to purity.

  447. So if you

  448. are married,

  449. listen to this

  450. from Hebrews

    Hebrews 13:4

  451. 13,

  452. verse 4.

  453. Marriage

  454. should be

  455. honored by

  456. all,

  457. and the

  458. marriage bed

  459. kept pure,

  460. for God

  461. will judge

  462. the adulterer

  463. and the

  464. sexually

  465. immoral.

  466. If you

  467. are single,

  468. whatever your

  469. orientation,

  470. listen to this

  471. from 1 Timothy

  472. 5.

  473. Treat younger

  474. men as

  475. brothers,

  476. and younger

  477. women as

  478. sisters,

  479. with absolute

  480. purity.

  481. You see,

  482. to be made

  483. in God's

  484. image is

  485. to reflect

  486. God's heart

  487. for purity.

  488. Behavior

  489. is what the

  490. Bible talks

  491. about,

  492. not

  493. orientation.

  494. So we've

  495. got to be

  496. very clear

  497. about the

  498. differences

  499. there.

  500. But let's

  501. move on

  502. as to

  503. why we

  504. struggle.

  505. struggle.

  506. And that's

  507. a sensible

  508. question to

  509. ask.

  510. Why do we

  511. struggle with

  512. our sexuality?

  513. Christians who

  514. have a

  515. homosexual

  516. orientation

  517. often talk

  518. about unwanted

  519. desires and

  520. share of their

  521. struggles to

  522. remain sexually

  523. pure.

  524. Richard Kirker,

  525. who was part

  526. of the gay and

  527. lesbian Christian

  528. movement in

  529. Britain,

  530. he said

  531. this,

  532. it would

  533. be very

  534. cavalier and

  535. capricious of

  536. God who

  537. created people

  538. in a certain

  539. way and

  540. then instructed

  541. them that

  542. they are

  543. forbidden from

  544. fulfilling all

  545. the potential

  546. they have been

  547. given.

  548. In other words,

  549. he was saying,

  550. if God made

  551. me this way

  552. with homosexual

  553. feelings,

  554. then I must

  555. be able to

  556. express it

  557. sexually.

  558. Well,

  559. I don't think

  560. God has made

  561. us that way.

  562. apart from

  563. scripture,

  564. scientific and

  565. medical research

  566. has shown that

  567. homosexuality is

  568. not genetically

  569. or biologically

  570. determined.

  571. You see,

  572. we all live in

  573. a fallen world

  574. and as a result,

  575. all of our

  576. sexuality,

  577. whoever we

  578. are,

  579. is all

  580. flawed.

  581. None of us

  582. relate to each

  583. other the way

  584. that we ought

  585. to,

  586. we don't live

  587. the way God

  588. intends,

  589. and we don't

  590. behave according

  591. to God's

  592. word.

  593. The Bible

  594. is crystal

  595. clear that

  596. while we have

  597. all been made

  598. in the image

  599. of God,

  600. that image

  601. has been

  602. distorted.

  603. And a

  604. distorted

  605. sexuality can

  606. be put down

  607. to,

  608. very simply,

  609. our wrong

  610. choices on

  611. our own

  612. part,

  613. but equally,

  614. our sexuality

  615. can be

  616. distorted

  617. because of

  618. another person's

  619. wrong choice

  620. towards us.

  621. So if

  622. people have

  623. suffered

  624. sexual abuse,

  625. it is going

  626. to have an

  627. effect on

  628. their behavior

  629. and their

  630. outlook on

  631. their relationships.

  632. It's also

  633. true that for

  634. those who

  635. have grown up

  636. within a

  637. family where

  638. there has

  639. been one

  640. parent or

  641. there's been

  642. people coming

  643. in and out

  644. of the

  645. relationship,

  646. that that

  647. also creates

  648. behavior.

  649. Contrary to

  650. common thought,

  651. there is

  652. not a

  653. gay gene.

  654. Homosexuality

  655. is a

  656. choice within

  657. our control

  658. or it's

  659. a learned

  660. behavior

  661. outside of

  662. our immediate

  663. control.

  664. I have a

  665. book here

  666. and as

  667. we are

  668. stuck for

  669. time,

  670. we could

  671. take a

  672. long time

  673. to look

  674. at those

  675. issues.

  676. This one

  677. is called

  678. Walking

  679. with Gay

  680. Friends

  681. and there's

  682. a very

  683. helpful

  684. chapter on

  685. here called

  686. Nature.

  687. Nature.

  688. Or nurture

  689. which will

  690. take that

  691. whole issue

  692. through a

  693. little bit

  694. more.

  695. Did God

  696. make me

  697. this way

  698. or is it

  699. because of

  700. outside influences

  701. and experiences

  702. that makes me

  703. the way that

  704. I am?

  705. So I just

  706. hold that up

  707. as something

  708. that you

  709. want to

  710. have a

  711. read of.

  712. So I

  713. think this

  714. will help

  715. us better

  716. understand

  717. homosexuality,

  718. who we are,

  719. we're made

  720. in God's

  721. image,

  722. how we live,

  723. the relationships

  724. that he has

  725. given us,

  726. but why we

  727. struggle.

  728. We live

  729. in a

  730. fallen

  731. and broken

  732. world,

  733. and we

  734. make choices

  735. ourselves,

  736. but because of

  737. others' choices

  738. towards us,

  739. it can have an

  740. effect on our

  741. behavior and

  742. our thinking.

  743. So what is

  744. God's great

  745. hope?

  746. Well, I think

  747. there are three

  748. ways that we

  749. can respond

  750. equally to

  751. this.

  752. things.

  753. And the

  754. first is

  755. this.

  756. First, we

  757. are not

  758. called to

  759. stamp out

  760. homosexual

  761. behavior.

  762. We are

  763. called to

  764. preach

  765. Christ.

  766. Paul has

  767. made it very

  768. clear that it

  769. is God's

  770. business to

  771. judge those

  772. who are

  773. outside the

  774. church.

  775. Have a look

  776. Corinthians

  777. chapter 5,

  778. verses 9

  779. to 10.

  780. Chapter 5

  781. starts out

  782. where it

  783. says in

  784. verse 1,

  785. it's actually

  786. reported that

  787. there is

  788. sexual immorality

  789. among you.

  790. And we

  791. continue in

  792. verse 9.

  793. He says,

  794. I have

  795. written to

  796. you in

  797. my letter

  798. not to

  799. associate

  800. with

  801. sexually

  802. immoral

  803. people,

  804. not at

  805. all meaning

  806. the people

  807. of this

  808. world who

  809. are immoral.

  810. In other

  811. words,

  812. not meaning

  813. those who

  814. are not

  815. Christians,

  816. or the

  817. greedy,

  818. or swindlers,

  819. or idolaters.

  820. In that

  821. case,

  822. you would

  823. have to

  824. leave this

  825. world.

  826. Verse 12,

  827. what business

  828. is it of

  829. mine to

  830. judge those

  831. outside the

  832. church?

  833. You see,

  834. it is not

  835. our calling

  836. as Christians

  837. to enforce

  838. a certain

  839. moral behavior

  840. and to

  841. remove

  842. ourselves

  843. from people

  844. who engage

  845. in immoral

  846. practices.

  847. If that

  848. were the

  849. case,

  850. he is

  851. saying,

  852. we would

  853. just have

  854. to leave

  855. the planet.

  856. We'd

  857. have to

  858. go and

  859. live on

  860. planet

  861. Mars or

  862. something.

  863. Rather,

  864. what our

  865. concern should

  866. be as

  867. Christians is

  868. not the

  869. behavior of

  870. those who

  871. are not

  872. Christians,

  873. but the

  874. behavior of

  875. those who

  876. are Christians.

  877. We should

  878. be concerned

  879. about the

  880. calling of

  881. the Christian.

  882. And the

  883. primary calling

  884. of the

  885. Christian is

  886. to reach

  887. out with

  888. the gospel.

  889. And Paul

  890. made it very

  891. clear in

  892. chapter 1

  893. verse 17

  894. that God

  895. had sent

  896. him primarily

  897. to preach

  898. the gospel.

  899. That was

  900. why he was

  901. here.

  902. One writer

  903. put it like

  904. this,

  905. people need

  906. a reason to

  907. live a changed

  908. life,

  909. and we can

  910. give them

  911. that reason.

  912. God has

  913. not called

  914. us to be

  915. the moral

  916. police for

  917. this world.

  918. He has

  919. called us

  920. to preach

  921. the good

  922. news about

  923. his son.

  924. The biggest

  925. problem that

  926. the non-Christian

  927. world has

  928. is the fact

  929. that they

  930. are not

  931. Christians.

  932. Their

  933. behavior is

  934. a secondary

  935. issue.

  936. The real

  937. problem is

  938. that they

  939. don't know

  940. Jesus.

  941. Therefore,

  942. we can say,

  943. the gospel

  944. is central.

  945. so often,

  946. we can

  947. focus on

  948. the external.

  949. We can

  950. see people's

  951. behavior,

  952. and we

  953. want to

  954. change their

  955. behavior.

  956. We want

  957. to make

  958. them different

  959. kind of

  960. people.

  961. But the

  962. real issue

  963. is the

  964. internal.

  965. It's the

  966. heart,

  967. and it's

  968. only the

  969. gospel that

  970. can penetrate

  971. deep into

  972. people's

  973. hearts and

  974. bring about

  975. the change.

  976. Unless people

  977. are changed

  978. on the inside,

  979. they're never

  980. going to change

  981. on the outside.

  982. So our

  983. first response

  984. as Christians

  985. is always

  986. to be

  987. introducing

  988. people

  989. to Jesus.

  990. The second

  991. response,

  992. then,

  993. is this.

  994. We are not

  995. called to

  996. ignore

  997. homosexual

  998. behavior.

  999. We are to

  1000. seek ongoing

  1001. transformation.

  1002. Now,

  1003. when Paul

  1004. wrote to

  1005. the Christians

  1006. at Corinth,

  1007. and we

  1008. must remember

  1009. that this

  1010. is a letter

  1011. written to

  1012. a church,

  1013. to those

  1014. who are

  1015. Christians,

  1016. and we

  1017. see all

  1018. the behavior

  1019. that was

  1020. going on,

  1021. and he

  1022. was aware

  1023. as he

  1024. wrote the

  1025. letter that

  1026. there was

  1027. sexual

  1028. immorality

  1029. of all

  1030. kinds that

  1031. was going

  1032. on at

  1033. the church.

  1034. But look

  1035. at the way

  1036. in which he

  1037. starts his

  1038. letter.

  1039. Go back

  1040. to chapter

  1041. one,

  1042. verse

  1043. two.

  1044. You

  1045. think of

  1046. all the

  1047. issues that

  1048. we've

  1049. looked at

  1050. that were

  1051. in the

  1052. church,

  1053. and all

  1054. the problems,

  1055. and this

  1056. is how he

  1057. starts in

  1058. verse two.

  1059. He says,

  1060. to the

  1061. church of

  1062. God in

  1063. Corinth,

  1064. to those

  1065. sanctified in

  1066. Christ Jesus,

  1067. called to be

  1068. holy,

  1069. together with

  1070. all those

  1071. everywhere who

  1072. call on the

  1073. name of our

  1074. Lord Jesus

  1075. Christ,

  1076. their Lord

  1077. and ours.

  1078. I find it

  1079. quite incredible

  1080. that he doesn't

  1081. just launch

  1082. into a big

  1083. tirade,

  1084. condemning

  1085. every immoral

  1086. behavior.

  1087. Instead,

  1088. he starts

  1089. off by

  1090. reminding them

  1091. of the

  1092. gospel.

  1093. He starts

  1094. off by

  1095. reminding them

  1096. of their

  1097. life with

  1098. Christ.

  1099. He's telling

  1100. them that

  1101. you've been

  1102. sanctified,

  1103. which means

  1104. you've been

  1105. set apart

  1106. for Christ.

  1107. You belong

  1108. to Christ.

  1109. You were

  1110. called to

  1111. be holy.

  1112. you're

  1113. different.

  1114. In other

  1115. words,

  1116. because of

  1117. who you

  1118. are,

  1119. because of

  1120. what Christ

  1121. has done

  1122. in your

  1123. life,

  1124. this is

  1125. how you

  1126. should

  1127. live.

  1128. And that's

  1129. where he

  1130. starts his

  1131. letter.

  1132. So when we

  1133. get into

  1134. the nitty-gritty

  1135. of the

  1136. issues in

  1137. chapter 5,

  1138. he gives

  1139. very clear

  1140. instructions

  1141. that the

  1142. Christian,

  1143. the believer

  1144. who persists

  1145. in sexual

  1146. immorality,

  1147. the Christian

  1148. who is

  1149. unrepentant,

  1150. that person

  1151. should not

  1152. be ignored.

  1153. So in

  1154. chapter 5,

  1155. verse 11,

  1156. he says,

  1157. but now,

  1158. well, let's

  1159. pick it up

  1160. from verse 9,

  1161. just so you

  1162. get the flow

  1163. of thought

  1164. again.

  1165. He says,

  1166. I have

  1167. written to

  1168. you in

  1169. my letter

  1170. not to

  1171. associate

  1172. with

  1173. sexually

  1174. immoral

  1175. people,

  1176. not at

  1177. all meaning

  1178. the people

  1179. of this

  1180. world who

  1181. are immoral

  1182. or the

  1183. greedy,

  1184. the swindlers

  1185. or idolaters.

  1186. In that

  1187. case,

  1188. you would

  1189. have to

  1190. leave this

  1191. world.

  1192. But now

  1193. I am

  1194. writing to

  1195. you that

  1196. you must

  1197. not associate

  1198. with anyone

  1199. who calls

  1200. himself a

  1201. brother,

  1202. calls himself

  1203. a Christian,

  1204. but is

  1205. sexually

  1206. immoral

  1207. or greedy,

  1208. an idolater

  1209. or a

  1210. slanderer,

  1211. a drunkard

  1212. or a

  1213. swindler.

  1214. With

  1215. such a

  1216. person,

  1217. do not

  1218. even

  1219. eat.

  1220. Verse 13,

  1221. God

  1222. will

  1223. judge

  1224. those

  1225. outside,

  1226. expel

  1227. the wicked

  1228. man

  1229. from among

  1230. you.

  1231. In other

  1232. words,

  1233. you have

  1234. a

  1235. responsibility

  1236. to the

  1237. believer

  1238. in the

  1239. church

  1240. who is

  1241. unrepentant.

  1242. And it's

  1243. saying here,

  1244. I think,

  1245. in a wider

  1246. context,

  1247. that Christ

  1248. is not

  1249. content to

  1250. leave us

  1251. where we

  1252. are.

  1253. We have

  1254. to take

  1255. our sins

  1256. seriously,

  1257. whatever that

  1258. is,

  1259. and we

  1260. are to

  1261. seek

  1262. ongoing

  1263. transformation.

  1264. So with

  1265. that in

  1266. mind,

  1267. grace is

  1268. required.

  1269. When we

  1270. become

  1271. Christians,

  1272. our

  1273. behavior

  1274. doesn't

  1275. change

  1276. overnight.

  1277. As soon

  1278. as you

  1279. turn to

  1280. Christ,

  1281. it doesn't

  1282. mean to

  1283. say that

  1284. you are

  1285. now a

  1286. perfect

  1287. person.

  1288. Our

  1289. position

  1290. before

  1291. God

  1292. changes.

  1293. He

  1294. now

  1295. sees

  1296. us

  1297. as he

  1298. sees

  1299. Christ,

  1300. blameless

  1301. and holy

  1302. in his

  1303. sight.

  1304. But the

  1305. transformation

  1306. of our

  1307. lives is

  1308. ongoing.

  1309. And so

  1310. often we

  1311. seem to

  1312. get it

  1313. round the

  1314. wrong way.

  1315. We say,

  1316. change your

  1317. behavior and

  1318. then come

  1319. to Christ.

  1320. Get your

  1321. life sorted

  1322. and then

  1323. you can

  1324. come to

  1325. Jesus.

  1326. That's

  1327. wrong.

  1328. It's

  1329. terribly

  1330. wrong.

  1331. We come

  1332. to Christ

  1333. first as

  1334. we are,

  1335. whether we

  1336. are homosexual

  1337. or heterosexual.

  1338. And God

  1339. in his

  1340. goodness

  1341. will bring

  1342. about the

  1343. change in

  1344. our lives.

  1345. We are

  1346. all sinners.

  1347. We all

  1348. fail and

  1349. we all

  1350. fall.

  1351. Therefore,

  1352. we need to

  1353. be able to

  1354. extend God's

  1355. grace to

  1356. one another

  1357. as we

  1358. seek the

  1359. transformation

  1360. of our

  1361. lives.

  1362. So

  1363. behavior

  1364. doesn't

  1365. change

  1366. overnight.

  1367. There is

  1368. a process

  1369. and therefore

  1370. grace needs

  1371. to be in

  1372. operation.

  1373. third

  1374. then,

  1375. we are

  1376. not

  1377. called to

  1378. make

  1379. homosexual

  1380. behavior

  1381. the worst

  1382. of sins.

  1383. We are

  1384. to welcome

  1385. all

  1386. sinners.

  1387. Look at

  1388. 1 Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 6:9–10

  1389. 6,

  1390. verses 9

  1391. to 10.

  1392. Let's

  1393. read from

  1394. there.

  1395. chapter 6,

  1396. verse 9.

  1397. Do you

  1398. not know

  1399. that the

  1400. wicked

  1401. will not

  1402. inherit

  1403. the kingdom

  1404. of God?

  1405. Do not

  1406. be deceived.

  1407. Neither

  1408. the sexually

  1409. immoral,

  1410. nor idolaters,

  1411. nor adulterers,

  1412. nor male

  1413. prostitutes,

  1414. nor homosexual

  1415. offenders,

  1416. nor thieves,

  1417. nor the

  1418. greedy,

  1419. nor drunkards,

  1420. nor slanderers,

  1421. nor swindlers,

  1422. will inherit

  1423. the kingdom

  1424. of God.

  1425. Now,

  1426. can you see

  1427. that list

  1428. that is there

  1429. before us?

  1430. Homosexual

  1431. behavior

  1432. is just

  1433. one in a

  1434. list

  1435. of sexually

  1436. immoral

  1437. sins.

  1438. It's not

  1439. the only

  1440. one.

  1441. And then

  1442. when we

  1443. look at

  1444. the sexually

  1445. immoral

  1446. sins,

  1447. that is

  1448. in a

  1449. broader

  1450. list

  1451. of other

  1452. sins,

  1453. of slanderers,

  1454. of swindlers,

  1455. and drunkards,

  1456. and greedy.

  1457. There's a

  1458. whole lot

  1459. of behavior

  1460. that is

  1461. contrary to

  1462. God's

  1463. good design.

  1464. Not being

  1465. generous

  1466. with your

  1467. money

  1468. is just

  1469. the same

  1470. as sleeping

  1471. with someone

  1472. of the

  1473. opposite

  1474. sex.

  1475. Speaking

  1476. against

  1477. somebody

  1478. else's

  1479. character

  1480. is the

  1481. same

  1482. as looking

  1483. at porn.

  1484. God

  1485. doesn't

  1486. distinguish

  1487. things here,

  1488. and nor

  1489. should we.

  1490. They are

  1491. all grouped

  1492. together.

  1493. Cy Rogers,

  1494. who is a

  1495. Christian

  1496. teacher,

  1497. somebody who

  1498. seeks to

  1499. help and

  1500. encourage

  1501. those who

  1502. struggle with

  1503. homosexuality,

  1504. he says

  1505. this,

  1506. it's not

  1507. heterosexuality

  1508. that gets

  1509. us into

  1510. heaven,

  1511. it's a

  1512. relationship

  1513. with Jesus.

  1514. When we

  1515. stand before

  1516. God,

  1517. he's not

  1518. going to

  1519. ask you,

  1520. are you

  1521. heterosexual,

  1522. or are you

  1523. homosexual?

  1524. He's going

  1525. to ask,

  1526. do you

  1527. love Jesus?

  1528. So it's

  1529. not about

  1530. avoiding

  1531. particular

  1532. sins,

  1533. it's about

  1534. coming as

  1535. sinners the

  1536. way we

  1537. are to

  1538. Christ,

  1539. which is

  1540. what Paul

  1541. seems to

  1542. be applying

  1543. in verse

  1544. 11.

  1545. He says

  1546. to them,

  1547. of all the

  1548. people that

  1549. were made,

  1550. this is what

  1551. the church

  1552. was made

  1553. up of,

  1554. all these

  1555. kinds of

  1556. people that

  1557. we read

  1558. in verse

  1559. 9.

  1560. And he

  1561. says in

  1562. verse 11,

  1563. that is

  1564. what some

  1565. of you

  1566. were.

  1567. This is

  1568. the way

  1569. you used

  1570. to live.

  1571. But when

  1572. you came

  1573. to Christ,

  1574. something

  1575. happened.

  1576. Finish off

  1577. verse 11,

  1578. but you

  1579. were washed,

  1580. you were

  1581. sanctified,

  1582. you were

  1583. justified in

  1584. the name of

  1585. our Lord

  1586. Jesus Christ

  1587. and by the

  1588. Spirit of

  1589. our God.

  1590. You see,

  1591. we are not

  1592. told to

  1593. come to

  1594. Christ with

  1595. our lives

  1596. sorted out.

  1597. We are to

  1598. come to

  1599. Christ so

  1600. that our

  1601. lives can

  1602. be sorted

  1603. out.

  1604. And he

  1605. explains how

  1606. the gospel

  1607. begins to

  1608. take effect

  1609. in people.

  1610. He reminds

  1611. them,

  1612. he says,

  1613. look,

  1614. you were

  1615. washed.

  1616. In other

  1617. words,

  1618. you have

  1619. been given

  1620. a new

  1621. purity.

  1622. Christ has

  1623. come to

  1624. you,

  1625. he has

  1626. cleaned

  1627. you,

  1628. he forgives

  1629. you of

  1630. your sin,

  1631. and in

  1632. place of

  1633. that,

  1634. he gives

  1635. you the

  1636. purity of

  1637. Christ.

  1638. Our

  1639. sexual

  1640. impurity

  1641. is

  1642. replaced

  1643. with

  1644. Christ's

  1645. purity.

  1646. You

  1647. are

  1648. washed,

  1649. you're

  1650. clean.

  1651. And then

  1652. he tells

  1653. them,

  1654. you are

  1655. sanctified.

  1656. We've

  1657. been given

  1658. a new

  1659. purpose in

  1660. life.

  1661. Christ has

  1662. come to

  1663. you so

  1664. that you

  1665. can finish

  1666. your old

  1667. life and

  1668. you can

  1669. begin a

  1670. new kind

  1671. of life.

  1672. We're set

  1673. apart,

  1674. that's what

  1675. sanctified

  1676. means.

  1677. You've

  1678. got a new

  1679. purpose in

  1680. life.

  1681. You now

  1682. follow God's

  1683. design for

  1684. sexuality,

  1685. sexuality,

  1686. not your

  1687. own.

  1688. Now start

  1689. living it.

  1690. And he

  1691. says you

  1692. were justified.

  1693. In other

  1694. words, we

  1695. have a new

  1696. position.

  1697. Christ has

  1698. come to

  1699. us.

  1700. He has

  1701. exchanged

  1702. places with

  1703. us.

  1704. He's taken

  1705. on all

  1706. our sexual

  1707. immorality,

  1708. every thought

  1709. and every

  1710. word and

  1711. every deed,

  1712. and he

  1713. suffers the

  1714. penalty that

  1715. we deserve,

  1716. and in its

  1717. place, we

  1718. are given a

  1719. new standing

  1720. before God.

  1721. We are

  1722. not

  1723. homosexual

  1724. or

  1725. heterosexual.

  1726. We are

  1727. children of

  1728. God.

  1729. That is our

  1730. true identity,

  1731. loved and

  1732. treasured by

  1733. him.

  1734. So you

  1735. can see

  1736. here that

  1737. he's reminding

  1738. them that

  1739. you are

  1740. welcomed as

  1741. sinners.

  1742. You are

  1743. welcomed with

  1744. all your

  1745. immoral

  1746. behaviour.

  1747. You were

  1748. introduced to

  1749. Jesus who

  1750. gives you a

  1751. new purity,

  1752. a new

  1753. purpose,

  1754. and a

  1755. new

  1756. position in

  1757. life.

  1758. That means

  1759. that all

  1760. hate-speak

  1761. is out.

  1762. We are

  1763. not to be

  1764. people who

  1765. walk around

  1766. with placards,

  1767. as is seen

  1768. on the news

  1769. from time

  1770. to time,

  1771. shouting,

  1772. God hates

  1773. fags.

  1774. We are

  1775. not to be

  1776. people who

  1777. look down

  1778. and feel

  1779. superior to

  1780. those with

  1781. a homosexual

  1782. orientation.

  1783. what about

  1784. the jokes

  1785. you make

  1786. amongst

  1787. your

  1788. friends?

  1789. What about

  1790. put-down

  1791. comments that

  1792. you may say

  1793. to your

  1794. classmate,

  1795. you're

  1796. gay?

  1797. For the

  1798. Christian

  1799. community,

  1800. that is

  1801. unacceptable.

  1802. There is

  1803. no room to

  1804. reject or

  1805. isolate

  1806. anyone.

  1807. We are

  1808. called to

  1809. welcome

  1810. everyone,

  1811. just as

  1812. Christ has

  1813. welcomed us.

  1814. so I'd

  1815. like us

  1816. to think

  1817. through

  1818. a couple

  1819. of things

  1820. and I

  1821. just leave

  1822. these comments

  1823. with you.

  1824. What is

  1825. there within

  1826. your sexuality

  1827. that you

  1828. struggle with?

  1829. Is there

  1830. anybody that

  1831. you know

  1832. who is

  1833. gay?

  1834. Do you

  1835. know anybody

  1836. who struggles

  1837. with homosexuality?

  1838. how do you

  1839. relate to

  1840. them?

  1841. What do

  1842. you say?

  1843. How do

  1844. you behave?

  1845. Is there a

  1846. different way

  1847. in which you

  1848. can approach

  1849. the person?

  1850. How can

  1851. you help

  1852. them?

  1853. Just as

  1854. much as

  1855. Christ has

  1856. come to

  1857. us to

  1858. help us.

  1859. May God

  1860. help us

  1861. to apply

  1862. his word

  1863. as we

  1864. seek to

  1865. live as

  1866. his people

  1867. in this

  1868. world.

  1869. Let's pray

  1870. together.

  1871. We've been

  1872. talking

  1873. through a

  1874. number of

  1875. issues over

  1876. these past

  1877. weeks and

  1878. so I just

  1879. want to say

  1880. if there is

  1881. anybody here

  1882. who wants

  1883. to talk

  1884. through further

  1885. any of

  1886. these issues

  1887. in a more

  1888. private manner

  1889. either with

  1890. myself or

  1891. with Kirstie

  1892. then please

  1893. do speak

  1894. to us and

  1895. it will be

  1896. held in

  1897. complete

  1898. confidentiality.

  1899. Our

  1900. Father God

  1901. we thank

  1902. you so

  1903. much that

  1904. we are

  1905. your

  1906. creation.

  1907. we are

  1908. part of

  1909. your

  1910. wonderful

  1911. design.

  1912. We are

  1913. your

  1914. image

  1915. bearers.

  1916. We were

  1917. made

  1918. like

  1919. God

  1920. and it

  1921. is your

  1922. desire

  1923. that we

  1924. would become

  1925. more and

  1926. more like

  1927. Christ

  1928. and thank

  1929. you that

  1930. one day

  1931. if our

  1932. trust is in

  1933. the Lord

  1934. Jesus

  1935. we will

  1936. become

  1937. like Christ

  1938. we will

  1939. be like

  1940. him.

  1941. we will

  1942. struggle no

  1943. more.

  1944. We won't

  1945. struggle about

  1946. our sin.

  1947. We won't

  1948. struggle with

  1949. our sexuality.

  1950. Everything

  1951. will be put

  1952. in order

  1953. and your

  1954. design will

  1955. be stamped

  1956. across our

  1957. lives and

  1958. across our

  1959. world.

  1960. Please help

  1961. us to live

  1962. as your

  1963. people.

  1964. Help us to

  1965. submit to the

  1966. authority of

  1967. your word.

  1968. Help us to

  1969. bring grace

  1970. to one

  1971. another.

  1972. Help us

  1973. not to

  1974. ignore the

  1975. sin that we

  1976. see around

  1977. us.

  1978. Help us to

  1979. bring forgiveness.

  1980. Help us to

  1981. speak Christ

  1982. into each

  1983. other's lives.

  1984. To help

  1985. each other

  1986. to go on

  1987. living the

  1988. pure life

  1989. that you

  1990. have called

  1991. us to

  1992. live.

  1993. And we

  1994. pray that you

  1995. would help

  1996. us to be

  1997. lights shining

  1998. for you

  1999. in what

  2000. is still

  2001. very much

  2002. a homophobic

  2003. culture and

  2004. society.

  2005. Help us to

  2006. bring your

  2007. love.

  2008. Help us to

  2009. bring Christ.

  2010. Help us to

  2011. be your

  2012. people.

  2013. In Jesus'

  2014. name.

  2015. Amen.

  2016. We're going

  2017. to sing

  2018. together our

  2019. closing song.

  2020. It's in

  2021. Christ alone

  2022. my hope is

  2023. found.

  2024. That is where

  2025. we all find

  2026. our refuge.

  2027. That's where we

  2028. all find our

  2029. peace.

  2030. That is where

  2031. we find our

  2032. hope.
