  1. It's on page 742 if you're using a church Bible.

  2. And Isaiah 55, we're going to look at half of Isaiah 55 this morning, and then on the

  3. second of January, as we start into a new year, we're going to look at the second part.

  4. So we're going to go to verses, to verse 5, and the first reading is Isaiah 55, starting

  5. at verse 1, page 742.

  6. Come, all you who are thirsty, come to the waters, and you who have no money, come, buy

  7. and eat.

  8. Come, buy wine and milk without money and without cost.

  9. Why spend money on what is not bread, and your labour on what does not satisfy?

  10. Listen, listen to me, and eat what is good, and your soul will delight in the richest affair.

  11. Give ear and come to me.

  12. Hear me, that your soul may live.

  13. I will make an everlasting covenant with you, my faithful love promised to David.

  14. See, I have made him a witness to the peoples, a leader and commander of the peoples.

  15. Surely you will summon nations you know not, and nations that do not know you will hasten

  16. to you because of the Lord your God, the Holy One of Israel, for he has endowed you with

  17. splendour.

  18. Keep your finger in Isaiah 55, and then turn to John's Gospel, chapter 6, which is on page

  19. 1070.

  20. John chapter 6, it's on page 1070, starting at verse 25 through to 40.

    John 6 chapter mention

  21. Verse 25.

  22. When they found Jesus on the other side of the lake, they asked him, Rabbi, when did you

  23. get here?

  24. Jesus answered, I tell you the truth, you are looking for me not because you saw the miraculous

  25. signs, but because you ate the loaves and had your fill.

  26. Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son

  27. of Man will give you, on him God the Father has placed his seal of approval.

  28. Then they asked him, what must we do to do the works God requires?

  29. Jesus answered, the work of God is this, to believe in the one he has sent.

  30. So they asked him, what miraculous sign then will you give that we may see it and believe

  31. you?

  32. What will you do?

  33. Our forefathers ate the manna in the desert, as it is written, he gave them bread from heaven

  34. to eat.

  35. Jesus said to them, I tell you the truth, it is not Moses who has given you the bread from

  36. heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven.

  37. For the bread of God is he who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.

  38. Sir, they said, from now on give us this bread.

  39. Then Jesus declared, I am the bread of life.

  40. He who comes to me will never go hungry.

  41. He who believes in me will never be thirsty.

  42. But as I told you, you have seen me and still you do not believe.

  43. All that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never drive

  44. away.

  45. For I have come down from heaven not to do my will, but to do the will of him who sent

  46. me.

  47. And this is the will of him who sent me, that I shall lose none of all that he has given

  48. me, but raise them up on the last day.

  49. For my Father's will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal

  50. life, and I will raise him up at the last day.

  51. Well, let's pray together.

  52. Our Father, we thank you for the food and drink that we have had already today.

  53. But we come now to you, to the true food, asking that you would fill us and satisfy us, that

  54. your Holy Spirit would be present amongst us, enabling us to comprehend your word, but also

  55. that it would work in our lives, changing us and transforming us, helping us to see that

  56. you are the hope for this world.

  57. That Christ is the true gift, the only gift that really satisfies.

  58. So please help us all, we ask in Jesus' name.

  59. Amen.

  60. Well, there are notes going around, but the title I have given to this first part of Isaiah

  61. 55 is Christmas, Hope for the Hopeless.

  62. Two years ago we were sitting on the brink of economic meltdown.

  63. Financial institutions were closing, banks were calling in their debts, panic set in, the

  64. markets got nervous, and the world as we know it went into recession.

  65. If we were unaware of what that meant, last week's budget has made it very personal and

  66. real.

  67. The other Tuesday our finance minister, Brian Lenehan, stood up in the door and he gave a very

  68. brave and determined budget speech.

  69. Let me quote to you.

  70. This has been a traumatic and worrying time for the citizens of our country.

  71. They are concerned that we had to seek external support to help us with our economic and financial

  72. difficulties.

  73. They are worried about the impact of this momentous and difficult decision on their lives.

  74. Yet, in fact, even in the most intractable and complex crisis, there are clear signs of

  75. hope.

  76. And then he concludes.

  77. We have been through a tumultuous two years.

  78. Today's budget is our first step in ensuring that we get back firmly on our own feet.

  79. We can emerge from this dark time as a stronger and fitter economy.

  80. There is every reason to be confident about the future of this economy and this country if

  81. we only have confidence in ourselves.

  82. Fighting talk, we might say.

  83. Big promises.

  84. Can they deliver?

  85. Well, we'll all have to wait and see.

  86. But without a doubt we can say that the people of our nation are desperate for hope.

  87. It is dark times.

  88. It is difficult times.

  89. And people are desperate for hope.

  90. I want you to imagine the doll tomorrow morning.

  91. Brian Cowan has just delivered his speech, which has been followed by members of the opposition.

  92. And then the proceedings are interrupted by a voice up in the balcony.

  93. And at first everybody tries to ignore it, but then they are captured by its message.

  94. Come, all you who are thirsty.

  95. Come to the waters.

  96. You who have no money.

  97. Come, buy and eat.

  98. Come, buy wine and milk without money and without cost.

  99. Could you imagine?

  100. I'm sure they struggle to comprehend what's going on.

  101. But the message they would see is clear.

  102. It's a message of hope.

  103. It talks of restoration.

  104. It's promising something good.

  105. In fact, we know it is a message of salvation.

  106. Isaiah, the prophet, who lived 750 years before the birth of Christ,

  107. was called by God.

  108. And he was called to speak into a nation that was quite literally without hope.

  109. He spoke to a people who were living in darkness.

  110. After years of turning and running from God, they were now in exile,

  111. overpowered and run by another nation, Babylon.

  112. Babylon.

  113. We've heard of the four-year recovery plan.

  114. Isaiah 55 is God's recovery plan.

  115. Not just for Israel, who are in Babylon,

  116. but for us and for the world in which we live.

  117. It's a recovery plan that's become a reality through the birth of Jesus Christ,

  118. the long-awaited Messiah,

  119. the rescuing ruler who comes to offer hope to the world.

  120. His recovery plan can be seen in three steps.

  121. The first step is one of invitation.

  122. Look at verse 1.

  123. Come, all you who are thirsty.

  124. Come to the waters.

  125. Come on.

  126. Come and buy and eat.

  127. Come and buy your wine and milk.

  128. Now we'll see what we are invited to in a minute,

  129. but let's not miss the extent of this invitation.

  130. This is an invitation that is to everyone.

  131. Come, all you who are thirsty.

  132. But in particular, it's an invitation to those who are broken and weak.

  133. It's to those who have nothing and who are desperately in need.

  134. I love getting invites to celebrations,

  135. but there is nothing worse than being the only person who doesn't get that invite,

  136. being left out.

  137. Well, here is an invitation.

  138. God's invitation to the nation.

  139. It's open.

  140. It's not exclusive.

  141. It's to all.

  142. And if anything, it favours the most needy.

  143. It reaches out to those who think themselves beyond recovery,

  144. and it says to those people especially,

  145. you can come.

  146. But what are we invited to?

  147. Well, it's not so much what we are invited to,

  148. but who we are invited to.

  149. Look at the middle of verse 2.

  150. It says,

  151. Listen.

  152. Listen to me.

  153. Verse 3.

  154. Give ear and come to me.

  155. Hear me.

  156. Who is this me that they are invited to?

  157. Well, keep your finger, please, in Isaiah 55,

  158. and go to John's Gospel,

  159. chapter 1,

  160. and verse 1.

  161. This me is an invite to come to the Lord Jesus.

  162. Chapter 1, verse 1 says,

  163. In the beginning was the Word,

  164. and the Word was with God,

  165. and the Word was God.

  166. Then in verse 14,

  167. The Word became flesh,

  168. and made his dwelling among us.

  169. The Word that spoke,

  170. and offered the invitation,

  171. the invitation to come,

  172. that Word that spoke,

  173. came into the world

  174. to become like one of us.

  175. Christ came into the world,

  176. and invited us to come,

  177. and to receive from him.

  178. Flick over a bit further

  179. to chapter 7

  180. of John's Gospel.

  181. Chapter 7, verse 37.

  182. It says,

  183. On the last day,

  184. verse 37,

  185. of the last and greatest day

  186. of the feast.

  187. The feast here

  188. is known as the Feast of Tabernacles,

  189. or booths.

  190. It was an eight-day feast,

  191. eight days of celebration,

  192. when the people of Israel,

  193. literally,

  194. went camping in their back garden.

  195. They would set up tents,

  196. and everybody would move into their tents,

  197. and they would live in these tents

  198. for eight days

  199. to remind themselves

  200. of the great escape from Egypt,

  201. and how God provided for them

  202. all the way through the wilderness.

  203. And one of the great events

  204. through that wilderness journey

  205. was when Moses took his staff

  206. and he hit the rock

  207. because they had no water,

  208. they were thirsty,

  209. and water flowed from it.

  210. And so Jesus says,

  211. verse 37,

  212. On the last and greatest day

  213. of this feast,

  214. Jesus stood up

  215. and said in a loud voice,

  216. If anyone is thirsty,

  217. let him come to me

  218. and drink.

  219. You see,

  220. this message

  221. in Isaiah 55,

  222. to come and listen

  223. to me,

  224. is the invite

  225. of the Lord Jesus

  226. to come to me,

  227. to come to him.

  228. And I'm sure

  229. we're all going to get

  230. lots of invites

  231. this Christmas

  232. to people's houses

  233. and to various parties.

  234. Well, we must not forget

  235. that Christmas

  236. is the ultimate invitation.

  237. It is an invite

  238. to the world

  239. to say to people,

  240. come to Jesus.

  241. Because Jesus

  242. has come into the world

  243. for you

  244. and for me,

  245. for the nations,

  246. and he wants us

  247. to come to him.

  248. Listen,

  249. listen to me.

  250. Give ear

  251. and come

  252. to me.

  253. But what

  254. and why

  255. is this invitation

  256. so special?

  257. Well,

  258. the second step

  259. after invitation

  260. is salvation.

  261. salvation.

  262. It is an invitation

  263. to salvation.

  264. Look at the end

  265. of verse 1

  266. of Isaiah 55.

  267. It says,

  268. You who have no money,

  269. come buy and eat.

  270. Come buy wine

  271. and milk

  272. without money

  273. and without cost.

  274. The end of verse 2.

  275. And your soul

  276. will delight

  277. in the richest

  278. of fair.

  279. prayer.

  280. This is an invitation

  281. to a feast.

  282. To drink

  283. and to eat

  284. till you have your fill.

  285. And whenever we come

  286. across this

  287. in the scriptures,

  288. whenever there's an invitation

  289. to drink

  290. and to eat,

  291. it's always a metaphor

  292. for life

  293. and for salvation.

  294. Again,

  295. look at the way

  296. in which Jesus

  297. takes these very images,

  298. these very ideas,

  299. and takes these words

  300. to offer salvation

  301. to people.

  302. Go back to

  303. John's Gospel,

  304. chapter 4.

  305. These are very

  306. well-known stories.

  307. The first one

  308. in John's Gospel,

  309. chapter 4,

  310. is the woman

  311. at the well.

  312. Jesus is thirsty

  313. and he's been asking

  314. for a drink

  315. and her dialogue

  316. is there.

  317. And then in verse 13,

  318. Jesus answered,

  319. everyone who drinks

  320. this water

  321. will be thirsty again.

  322. But whoever drinks

  323. the water I give him

  324. will never thirst.

  325. Indeed,

  326. the water I give him

  327. will become in him

  328. a spring of water

  329. welling up

  330. to eternal life.

  331. The invitation,

  332. you see,

  333. is Jesus to say,

  334. come to me,

  335. come and drink,

  336. because what I give you

  337. is true salvation.

  338. Have a look at

  339. chapter 6,

  340. verse 32.

  341. This is after the feeding

  342. of the 5,000.

  343. So he likens

  344. the water

  345. as salvation.

  346. He likens

  347. the bread

  348. as salvation.

  349. Verse 32,

  350. chapter 6,

  351. Jesus said to them,

  352. I tell you the truth,

  353. it is not Moses

  354. who has given you

  355. the bread for heaven,

  356. but it is my Father

  357. who gives you

  358. the true bread

  359. from heaven.

  360. For the bread of God

  361. is he

  362. who comes down

  363. from heaven

  364. and gives life

  365. to the world.

  366. Sir,

  367. they said,

  368. from now on

  369. give us this bread.

  370. Jesus answered,

  371. I am

  372. the bread of life.

  373. He who comes to me

  374. will never go hungry.

  375. He who believes

  376. in me

  377. will never

  378. be thirsty.

  379. Can we see

  380. how this is an invitation

  381. to come to Christ?

  382. An invitation

  383. to salvation,

  384. to find life

  385. in all its fullness.

  386. But let's notice

  387. from Isaiah 55

  388. two things

  389. about this salvation.

  390. First,

  391. it's free.

  392. In verse 1

  393. of 55

  394. it says,

  395. you who have

  396. no money

  397. got nothing

  398. in your wallets,

  399. in your bank accounts,

  400. come buy and eat

  401. without money

  402. and without cost.

  403. Now we know

  404. fine well

  405. that if we're going

  406. to enjoy Christmas

  407. as the world says,

  408. we've got to

  409. spend our money.

  410. As much as

  411. our purse

  412. strings

  413. have tightened,

  414. we've all got to

  415. part with our cash

  416. to get what we want.

  417. The saying is true,

  418. there is nothing free.

  419. except

  420. God's offer

  421. of salvation.

  422. That

  423. is free.

  424. We can't

  425. offer anything

  426. for God's salvation.

  427. We can't

  428. negotiate

  429. on the price.

  430. We can't

  431. bargain with him

  432. because there

  433. is no price

  434. because

  435. Jesus has

  436. paid

  437. the price.

  438. He paid

  439. the price

  440. with his own

  441. life

  442. on the cross.

  443. And so

  444. Jesus has

  445. made this gift

  446. freely available

  447. to all

  448. who will

  449. come to him

  450. and receive

  451. the life

  452. that he

  453. has to give.

  454. So it's free

  455. but it's also

  456. fulfilling.

  457. Look at verse 2.

  458. He asks the question

  459. and it's a searching

  460. question,

  461. why spend money

  462. on what is not

  463. bread

  464. and your labor

  465. on what does

  466. not satisfy?

  467. one commentator

  468. has helped

  469. me

  470. pointed out

  471. that when

  472. Israel went

  473. into exile

  474. they were not

  475. only moving

  476. physically

  477. from Judah

  478. to Babylon

  479. they were

  480. moving away

  481. spiritually.

  482. They were moving

  483. away from God

  484. and in an attempt

  485. to fill the void

  486. to fill the gut

  487. they immersed

  488. themselves into

  489. the culture

  490. that was in Babylon.

  491. they filled

  492. themselves with

  493. the religion

  494. that they found

  495. there.

  496. They filled

  497. themselves with

  498. the gods

  499. that were there.

  500. They just

  501. imbibed the

  502. whole culture

  503. but it left

  504. them empty

  505. and unfulfilled

  506. and so these

  507. are the words

  508. that are being

  509. spoken into

  510. these unfulfilled

  511. unsatisfied

  512. people.

  513. And I think

  514. it's just so

  515. true of our

  516. own nation

  517. and perhaps

  518. in our own

  519. lives.

  520. We try to

  521. find our

  522. satisfaction

  523. and our

  524. fulfilment

  525. outside of

  526. God.

  527. Outside of

  528. Christ.

  529. And in the

  530. recession and

  531. in the

  532. struggles

  533. people will

  534. say if only

  535. I had a bit

  536. more money.

  537. If only I

  538. could get

  539. another job

  540. that was a

  541. little bit

  542. more stable.

  543. If only we

  544. could get out

  545. of this

  546. recession.

  547. If only I

  548. could get

  549. this.

  550. If only I

  551. could have

  552. that.

  553. You fill in

  554. the gap for

  555. yourself.

  556. If only I

  557. could have.

  558. Then everything

  559. would be so

  560. much better.

  561. But whatever

  562. we turn to,

  563. whatever we

  564. fill our

  565. lives with,

  566. this is a

  567. reminder to

  568. say that it

  569. will never

  570. truly satisfy.

  571. Look at the

  572. end of verse

  573. two.

  574. Listen.

  575. Listen to

  576. me.

  577. Eat what

  578. is good

  579. and your

  580. soul will

  581. delight in

  582. the richest

  583. affair.

  584. Give ear and

  585. come to

  586. me.

  587. Hear me

  588. that your

  589. soul may

  590. live.

  591. As much

  592. as there is

  593. a recession,

  594. we do see

  595. people going

  596. mad, buying

  597. this, that

  598. and the

  599. other.

  600. People will

  601. be getting

  602. these gifts

  603. and that

  604. gift.

  605. They'll be

  606. eating far

  607. too much,

  608. drinking far

  609. too much.

  610. The days

  611. will go by

  612. and then

  613. people will

  614. be looking

  615. for more

  616. food and

  617. more things.

  618. Presents

  619. will break,

  620. there'll be

  621. more things

  622. that they'll

  623. want in life.

  624. But it

  625. never truly

  626. satisfies.

  627. The reminder

  628. of Christmas

  629. is to say

  630. that the

  631. ultimate

  632. Christmas

  633. promise,

  634. the ultimate

  635. gift,

  636. is that we

  637. will never

  638. thirst again,

  639. we will

  640. never go

  641. hungry,

  642. because we

  643. have everything

  644. that we

  645. need in

  646. Christ.

  647. It's a big

  648. searching

  649. question.

  650. Why spend

  651. money on

  652. what is not

  653. bread?

  654. Why give

  655. our lives

  656. to things

  657. that are

  658. never going

  659. to truly

  660. satisfy?

  661. Come to

  662. Christ,

  663. because in

  664. him we have

  665. everything that

  666. we need.

  667. Let me read

  668. to you a

  669. quote.

  670. There is a

  671. Narnia film

  672. coming out in

  673. the cinemas.

  674. This is a

  675. quote from

  676. The Silver

  677. Chair.

  678. Jill, the

  679. character, has

  680. just entered

  681. into Narnia,

  682. and she's

  683. incredibly

  684. thirsty.

  685. She hears

  686. the sound

  687. of a stream,

  688. and she

  689. makes her

  690. way to

  691. the stream,

  692. and as she

  693. gets to

  694. the stream,

  695. she's

  696. confronted

  697. with Aslan,

  698. the lion.

  699. Are you

  700. thirsty?

  701. said the

  702. lion.

  703. I'm dying

  704. of thirst,

  705. said Jill.

  706. Then drink,

  707. said the

  708. lion.

  709. May I?

  710. Could I?

  711. Would you

  712. mind going

  713. away while I

  714. do?

  715. said Jill.

  716. The lion

  717. answered this

  718. only by a

  719. look and a

  720. very low

  721. growl,

  722. and as

  723. Jill gazed

  724. at its

  725. motionless

  726. bulk,

  727. she realised

  728. that she

  729. might as

  730. well have

  731. asked the

  732. whole mountain

  733. to move

  734. aside for

  735. her convenience.

  736. The delicious

  737. rippling noise

  738. of the

  739. stream was

  740. driving her

  741. nearly frantic.

  742. Will you

  743. promise not

  744. to do

  745. anything to

  746. me if I

  747. do come?

  748. said Jill.

  749. I make

  750. no promise,

  751. said the

  752. lion.

  753. Jill was

  754. so thirsty

  755. now that,

  756. without noticing

  757. it, she

  758. had come a

  759. step nearer.

  760. Do you

  761. eat girls?

  762. she said.

  763. I have

  764. swallowed up

  765. girls and

  766. boys, women

  767. and men, kings

  768. and emperors,

  769. cities and

  770. realms, said

  771. the lion.

  772. It didn't say

  773. this as if it

  774. were boasting,

  775. nor as if it

  776. were sorry, nor

  777. as if it were

  778. angry.

  779. It just said

  780. it.

  781. I daren't

  782. come and

  783. drink, said

  784. Jill.

  785. Then you

  786. will die

  787. of thirst,

  788. said the

  789. lion.

  790. Oh dear,

  791. said Jill,

  792. coming another

  793. step nearer.

  794. I suppose I

  795. must go and

  796. look for

  797. another stream

  798. then.

  799. There is

  800. no other

  801. stream,

  802. said the

  803. lion.

  804. It's a

  805. question to

  806. ask us

  807. all, where

  808. will we

  809. go to

  810. find life?

  811. What do

  812. you pursue

  813. to quench

  814. your thirst?

  815. What do

  816. you want to

  817. fill your

  818. life with?

  819. What do

  820. other people

  821. want to

  822. fill their

  823. life with?

  824. There is

  825. only one

  826. stream that

  827. we are

  828. invited to,

  829. that is the

  830. stream of

  831. Jesus Christ.

  832. And Christmas

  833. is that

  834. invitation for

  835. us to come

  836. and drink of

  837. that salvation.

  838. And what

  839. Jesus offers,

  840. we will find

  841. nowhere else.

  842. Come is the

  843. invitation,

  844. to come to

  845. Christ,

  846. to come and

  847. find his

  848. salvation.

  849. salvation.

  850. But there's

  851. one more

  852. step in

  853. this process,

  854. because it's

  855. not just a

  856. recovery for

  857. us individually,

  858. this is to

  859. be a recovery

  860. plan for the

  861. whole world.

  862. The third

  863. step I've

  864. called

  865. transformation,

  866. verse 3.

  867. Give ear and

  868. come to

  869. me.

  870. Hear me

  871. that your

  872. soul may

  873. live, and

  874. I will make

  875. an everlasting

  876. covenant with

  877. you, my

  878. faithful or

  879. steadfast love

  880. promised to

  881. David.

  882. David, of

  883. course, was the

  884. greatest king

  885. that Israel ever

  886. had.

  887. But the

  888. mention of

  889. David, we

  890. should know,

  891. was always

  892. synonymous with

  893. the expectation

  894. of a coming

  895. Messiah.

  896. To mention

  897. David, who

  898. had been all

  899. those years

  900. ago, was a

  901. promise that

  902. God was going

  903. to raise up a

  904. new king, a

  905. new kind of

  906. leader.

  907. So to those

  908. who were in

  909. exile at the

  910. time, this

  911. message to

  912. come, to

  913. come to the

  914. king, was

  915. one of hope

  916. and peace and

  917. restoration.

  918. A king who

  919. was going to

  920. deliver everything

  921. that God had

  922. promised, pure

  923. salvation.

  924. And we know

  925. that David was

  926. a great leader

  927. because it was

  928. only under

  929. David that the

  930. whole nation

  931. was ever united.

  932. We also know

  933. that he was a

  934. great commander.

  935. Look at verse

  936. four.

  937. See, I have

  938. made him a

  939. witness to the

  940. peoples, a

  941. leader and

  942. commander of

  943. the peoples.

  944. The greatest

  945. victories that

  946. Israel had were

  947. always under

  948. David.

  949. He was the

  950. greatest leader,

  951. the greatest

  952. king that they

  953. had ever known.

  954. king.

  955. And now it's

  956. pointing forward

  957. to a different

  958. kind of king, a

  959. new king, a

  960. new messiah that

  961. is going to

  962. come.

  963. The ultimate

  964. leader, the

  965. ultimate commander

  966. who would be the

  967. Lord Jesus

  968. Christ.

  969. The one who

  970. would win the

  971. greatest victory

  972. on the cross.

  973. The one who

  974. would win the

  975. victory over sin

  976. and death.

  977. death as he

  978. took the

  979. penalty, as he

  980. defeated the

  981. grave and rose

  982. victoriously.

  983. Here was the

  984. greatest commander,

  985. the greatest king

  986. who came.

  987. And here was the

  988. greatest king who

  989. would unite people

  990. from all nations

  991. and make them one

  992. under his

  993. lordship.

  994. And so it's

  995. saying to these

  996. people here,

  997. there is a

  998. king and I

  999. have made him a

  1000. witness to

  1001. people, a

  1002. leader and a

  1003. commander of the

  1004. people.

  1005. And when we

  1006. come to this

  1007. king, when we

  1008. accept his

  1009. invitation, when

  1010. we receive his

  1011. salvation, our

  1012. lives are

  1013. completely and

  1014. utterly transformed.

  1015. Look at the

  1016. end of verse

  1017. 5 to see this

  1018. transformation.

  1019. The end of

  1020. verse 5 says,

  1021. for he has

  1022. endowed you

  1023. with splendour.

  1024. He has

  1025. beautified you

  1026. with splendour.

  1027. You see, the

  1028. salvation that

  1029. Christ brings is

  1030. nothing less than

  1031. absolute beauty.

  1032. Without Christ,

  1033. we are an

  1034. absolute mess.

  1035. But with

  1036. Christ in our

  1037. lives, we

  1038. are something

  1039. beautiful.

  1040. Look at the

  1041. contrast from

  1042. verse 1.

  1043. They were

  1044. thirsty, they

  1045. were hungry,

  1046. there was no

  1047. money, they

  1048. were unfulfilled,

  1049. unsatisfied, there

  1050. was nothing.

  1051. Now in verse 5,

  1052. it's completely

  1053. reversed.

  1054. They are

  1055. satisfied and

  1056. now they are

  1057. covered in

  1058. splendour.

  1059. From

  1060. paupers to

  1061. princes and

  1062. princesses, they

  1063. have now become

  1064. children of the

  1065. king.

  1066. They have been

  1067. given, as it

  1068. says at the

  1069. end of verse 2,

  1070. the richest

  1071. affair.

  1072. You see, the

  1073. salvation that

  1074. comes from

  1075. Jesus Christ,

  1076. our Messiah,

  1077. our king, is

  1078. full, it's

  1079. complete, it's

  1080. satisfying, it's

  1081. everything that we

  1082. need, and he

  1083. utterly changes us

  1084. and transforms us,

  1085. not bringing just

  1086. forgiveness, but

  1087. totally transforming

  1088. our lives so

  1089. that we are

  1090. something beautiful,

  1091. something that

  1092. God changes us

  1093. and makes us a

  1094. new creation, a

  1095. new kind of

  1096. people.

  1097. But there's a

  1098. whole reason for

  1099. this transformation,

  1100. there's a whole

  1101. reason for this

  1102. change, and we

  1103. see that at the

  1104. beginning of verse

  1105. 5.

  1106. He says,

  1107. Surely you will

  1108. summon nations

  1109. you know not,

  1110. and nations that

  1111. do not know you

  1112. will hasten to

  1113. you.

  1114. Nations are going

  1115. to run to you.

  1116. You see, God's

  1117. plan for the

  1118. people of Israel

  1119. was that they

  1120. would be a

  1121. magnet, like a

  1122. people pulling the

  1123. surrounding nations

  1124. towards them to

  1125. draw them towards

  1126. God's salvation.

1127. They were to be a

  1128. nation that was to

1129. be the envy of all

  1130. the other nations,

  1131. so that as people

  1132. looked in on

  1133. Israel, they would

  1134. see what they had

  1135. from God, and they

  1136. would also want it.

  1137. They would want

  1138. this God too.

1139. They were to be a

  1140. beautiful and

  1141. attractive nation

  1142. that had been so

  1143. transformed and so

  1144. changed that nations

  1145. that they didn't

  1146. know would come

  1147. running towards

  1148. them to get the

  1149. salvation that God

  1150. had.

  1151. Well, Christmas

  1152. reminds us.

  1153. that the King

  1154. has come, that

  1155. Jesus is the

  1156. beautiful one.

  1157. He is so

  1158. attractive.

  1159. He is the

  1160. sinless one, the

  1161. perfect one.

  1162. He is God's

  1163. Son, the God

  1164. Man, Jesus

  1165. Christ.

  1166. And the salvation

  1167. and the life that

  1168. he offers, as he

  1169. comes into the

  1170. world, he is like

  1171. the magnet.

1172. He is the one who

  1173. draws people to

  1174. himself.

  1175. But the point I

  1176. think in these

  1177. verses here in

  1178. verse 5, is that

  1179. if we have

  1180. received the

  1181. salvation of

  1182. Jesus, we

  1183. become people who

  1184. are beautiful and

  1185. in turn our

  1186. lives are to

  1187. become an

  1188. attraction.

  1189. Our lives are to

  1190. be an attraction.

  1191. Growing up as a

  1192. kid, and I know

  1193. Kirsty always

  1194. laughs at this, but

  1195. we didn't have a

  1196. lot of money.

  1197. And I always found

  1198. myself wishing and

  1199. wanting the gifts that

  1200. all the other kids

  1201. have.

1202. As they got on their

1203. brand new BMX and I

  1204. hopped around to my

  1205. space hopper, I

  1206. wished that I had

  1207. what they had.

  1208. They always had the

  1209. best toys, the

  1210. better gifts.

  1211. They were the

  1212. envy.

  1213. I wanted what

  1214. they had.

  1215. And when we come

  1216. to see what

  1217. Christmas truly has

  1218. to offer, when we

  1219. come to see Christ

  1220. in all his beauty

  1221. and all his

  1222. wonder, when we

  1223. see the true

  1224. gift, when we

  1225. have the true

  1226. gift, others

  1227. will be wanting

  1228. what we have.

  1229. They will see in

  1230. us a life that

  1231. has been changed

  1232. and transformed,

  1233. a life that has

  1234. become beautiful,

  1235. a life that has

  1236. become so

  1237. attractive.

  1238. Do you see there

  1239. in verse 5?

  1240. Nations that you

  1241. do not know will

  1242. run to you.

  1243. People will come

  1244. to us.

  1245. They will see us

  1246. as a community of

  1247. people that have

  1248. been changed.

  1249. And they will be

  1250. drawn in by the

  1251. love.

  1252. They will be drawn

  1253. in by the forgiveness,

1254. by the way in which

  1255. people repent towards

  1256. one another.

  1257. they will be

  1258. attracted because

  1259. Christ has changed

  1260. us.

  1261. You see, our

  1262. nation is desperate

  1263. for hope.

  1264. We long for the

  1265. new year.

1266. We long for a new

  1267. election, a new

  1268. government, someone

  1269. or something who's

1270. going to make it all

  1271. better, to make it

  1272. all go away.

  1273. We long for the

  1274. good old days of

  1275. Charlie McCreevey,

  1276. the Santa Claus of

  1277. budgets, who gave

  1278. presents beyond our

  1279. wildest dreams.

1280. But we all know now

  1281. that it wasn't

  1282. without cost.

  1283. We're having to pay

  1284. for it.

  1285. And the reality was

  1286. it never filled,

  1287. it never satisfied,

  1288. satisfied.

  1289. It has left people

  1290. hungry and thirsty.

  1291. They have delved

1292. in to try and find

  1293. what's satisfied,

  1294. and it never

  1295. delivered.

  1296. In Christmas, we

  1297. have the greatest

  1298. invitation, an

  1299. invitation to take

  1300. the greatest gift,

  1301. the gift of Jesus

  1302. Christ, the ultimate

  1303. King who offers

  1304. pure salvation, a

  1305. gift that is so

  1306. beautiful and so

  1307. attractive that if we

  1308. would only open it,

  1309. if we would learn

1310. to enjoy it, if we

  1311. would learn to be

  1312. thirsty and hungry,

  1313. and only be

  1314. satisfied by Christ,

  1315. then people will

  1316. see within us an

  1317. attraction, they

  1318. will see Christ, and

  1319. they will be drawn

  1320. to him.

  1321. And the reality is,

  1322. is what we're

  1323. saying is that because

  1324. of Christ, because of

  1325. our message, because

  1326. of our lives, we

  1327. bring the message of

  1328. hope to the

  1329. hopeless world.

  1330. We have got

  1331. something to say to

  1332. people.

1333. May God give us the

  1334. courage and the

  1335. strength to live out

  1336. this hope and to

1337. speak his hope to a

  1338. needy world.

  1339. let's pray together.

  1340. Amen.

  1341. We thank you, Father

  1342. God, that you did

  1343. send your son,

  1344. that you didn't wait

  1345. for an invitation from

  1346. us, but that you

  1347. took the initiative,

  1348. and that you

  1349. entered into our

  1350. world, into all its

  1351. mess and all its

  1352. darkness, into its

  1353. sin.

  1354. And you came like

  1355. one of us and

  1356. invited us to come

  1357. to you.

  1358. forgive us for the

  1359. times where we

  1360. reject that invitation

  1361. when we run from

  1362. you, where we go

  1363. chasing our own

  1364. dreams and our own

  1365. ideas.

  1366. Turn our hearts that

1367. we would ever run to

  1368. you, that we would

  1369. always find everything

1370. that we need in you,

1371. that you would create a

  1372. genuine thirst and

  1373. hunger within us,

  1374. create a thirst and a

  1375. hunger within this

  1376. community, that

  1377. draws them and has

  1378. them running to

  1379. Christ, that they

  1380. will never find or

  1381. never rest until they

  1382. do come to you.

  1383. We pray, Father, that

1384. you would help us to

  1385. enjoy you, to know

1386. you, and we pray that

  1387. you would give us

  1388. courage to speak the

  1389. hope that only Christ

  1390. can bring into a

  1391. hopeless and needy

  1392. world.

  1393. We pray these things

  1394. in Jesus' name.

  1395. Amen.

  1396. Amen.

  1397. Amen.

  1398. Amen.

  1399. Amen.

  1400. Amen.

  1401. Amen.

  1402. Amen.

  1403. Amen.

  1404. Amen.

  1405. Amen.

  1406. Amen.

  1407. Amen.

  1408. Amen.

  1409. Amen.

  1410. Amen.
