  1. Chapter 1.

  2. I'm going to read them today just simply because there's a few different verses scattered through the Genesis that we want to read.

  3. So it's on page 4, Genesis chapter 1.

    Genesis 1 chapter mention

  4. So when you found Genesis 1 on page 4, also go to Romans chapter 5, which is on page 1132.

    Romans 5 chapter mention

  5. Romans chapter 5, which is on page 1132.

    Romans 5 chapter mention

  6. So Genesis 1, starting at verse 26.

  7. And then we'll go to Romans 5.

  8. So let's read then from Genesis 1, verse 26.

    Genesis 1:26

  9. Then God said,

  10. Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air,

  11. over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.

  12. So God created man in his own image.

  13. In the image of God, he created him.

  14. Male and female, he created them.

  15. God blessed them and said to them,

  16. Be fruitful and increase in number.

  17. Fill the earth and subdue it.

  18. Now go to chapter 2, verse 15 of Genesis.

    Genesis 2:15

  19. Chapter 2, verse 15.

  20. The Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to work it and to take care of it.

  21. And the Lord God commanded the man,

  22. You are free to eat from any tree in the garden.

  23. But you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil,

  24. for when you eat of it, you will surely die.

  25. Chapter 3, verse 1.

  26. Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the Lord God had made.

  27. He said to the woman,

  28. Did God really say you must not eat from any tree in the garden?

  29. The woman said to the serpent,

  30. We may eat from the trees in the garden,

  31. but God did say you must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden,

  32. and you must not touch it, or you will die.

  33. You will not surely die, the serpent said to the woman,

  34. for God knows that when you eat of it, your eyes will be opened,

  35. and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.

  36. When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye,

  37. and also desirable for gaining wisdom,

  38. she took some and ate it.

  39. She also gave some to her husband who was with her,

  40. and he ate it.

  41. Then the eyes of both of them were opened,

  42. and they realized that they were naked,

  43. so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves.

  44. Now turn please to Romans chapter 5, verse 12.

    Romans 5:12

  45. Verse 12.

  46. Verse 12.

  47. Romans 5, verse 12.

    Romans 5:12

  48. Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man,

  49. and death through sin,

  50. and in this way death came to all men,

  51. because all sinned.

  52. For before the law was given,

  53. sin was in the world.

  54. But sin is not taken into account where there is no law.

  55. Nevertheless,

  56. death reigned from the time of Adam to the time of Moses,

  57. even over those who did not sin by breaking a command,

  58. as Adam did,

  59. who was a pattern of the one to come.

  60. But the gift is not like the trespass.

  61. For if the many died by the trespass of the one man,

  62. how much more did God's grace

  63. and the gift that came by the grace of the one man,

  64. Jesus Christ,

  65. overflow to the many?

  66. Again,

  67. the gift of God is not like the result of the one man's sin.

  68. The judgment followed one sin and brought condemnation.

  69. But the gift followed many trespasses and brought justification.

  70. For if by the trespass of the one man,

  71. death reigned through that one man,

  72. how much more will those who receive God's abundant provision of grace

  73. and of the gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man,

  74. Jesus Christ?

  75. Consequently,

  76. consequently,

  77. just as the result of one trespass was condemnation for all men,

  78. so also the result of one act of righteousness

  79. was justification that brings life for all men.

  80. for just as through the disobedience of the one man,

  81. the many were made sinners,

  82. so also through the obedience of the one man,

  83. the many will be made righteous.

  84. The law was added so that the trespass might increase.

  85. But where sin increased,

  86. grace increased all the more,

  87. so that just as sin reigned in death,

  88. so also grace might reign through righteousness

  89. to bring eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

  90. Well, please keep your Bibles open.

  91. Romans chapter 5,

    Romans 5 chapter mention

  92. and we'll look at this passage together.

  93. Let's pray.

  94. There is so much that is familiar about what we are doing.

  95. We come here each week.

  96. We sit with our Bibles open and we listen.

  97. There's so much that we know from the Bible.

  98. There's things that we've read before.

  99. And so our prayer, Father,

  100. is that you would guard us

  101. against familiarity.

  102. And that what we read at together

  103. and what we look at together

  104. would be fresh to us.

  105. That the grace of God

  106. would intervene and penetrate deep down

  107. into every one of our lives.

  108. That we would grasp afresh the wonder

  109. of what you have done

  110. so that no one will leave here this morning

  111. without having grasped

  112. how great you are.

  113. The life that we can have today

  114. and the life that is to come.

  115. So please change us, we ask.

  116. In Jesus' name.

  117. Amen.

  118. Amen.

  119. Well, tracing your family's ancestry

  120. has become quite a popular pastime.

  121. In many ways, it's very interesting

  122. to find out what your great-great-grandparents did

  123. and whereabouts they lived.

  124. But deeper than that,

  125. I think there is this unresting desire

  126. to know who you are.

  127. What makes me who I am?

  128. What's happened in the past

  129. that shapes me

  130. and who I am today?

  131. Well, members of our family

  132. have researched the records

  133. and we can trace our family line

  134. right the way back to Clan Grant.

  135. Descendants of King Kenneth McAlpine,

  136. apparently.

  137. We were sheriffs of Inverness

  138. in the 13th century.

  139. Strong supporters of Wallace.

  140. Do you remember Braveheart?

  141. To picture right now

  142. my great-great-great-granddaddy

  143. charging across the heather in his kilt,

  144. waving his sword

  145. as he sent the English back across the border.

  146. It's interesting, isn't it?

  147. But it doesn't really tell me who I am.

  148. We need to go much further back

  149. to discover who we really are.

  150. You see, there is another record

  151. that traces back our family line

  152. right to the very beginning.

  153. Our first father.

  154. Back in Genesis,

  155. what we read earlier,

  156. we were told that God made man

  157. in his image.

  158. The first man, Adam,

  159. from whom flows the whole human race.

  160. The present population of this world

  161. stands at about 6.6 billion,

  162. which includes thousands of people groups

  163. and different cultures

  164. and languages and races.

  165. Yet for all of our diversity,

  166. even here we're a diverse group.

  167. But if we were to trace our family line

  168. all the way back,

  169. we would end up at the same place,

  170. the same person,

  171. Adam.

  172. Now it's only when we look back to Adam

  173. that we discover

  174. who we really are.

  175. What has shaped us

  176. and what makes us

  177. the kind of people we are today.

  178. And what we find

  179. is an inescapable likeness.

  180. Look at verse 12,

  181. chapter 5.

  182. Therefore,

  183. just as sin entered the world

  184. through one man,

  185. that was Adam,

  186. and death through sin,

  187. and in this way,

  188. death came to all people

  189. because all sinned.

  190. Now that makes uncomfortable reading.

  191. Of course,

  192. we are reaping the consequences

  193. of Adam's sin

  194. that we read about in Genesis 3.

  195. But this does not mean

  196. that all the blame falls on Adam.

  197. No, the point of verse 12

  198. is that we are all just like Adam

  199. because at the end of verse 12,

  200. we have all sinned.

  201. Now when our son is naughty

  202. and stubbornly refuses what to do,

  203. Kirstie will turn to me and say,

  204. he's his father's son.

  205. And of course,

  206. that's the same thing

  207. my mum says about me to Kirstie.

  208. He's his father's son.

  209. And what they mean is

  210. that I have inherited

  211. my father's sinful nature,

  212. but I'm responsible for my behavior.

  213. Likewise,

  214. my poor son

  215. has inherited

  216. my sinful nature,

  217. but he's still responsible

  218. for his actions.

  219. Look at the beginning of verse 19.

  220. For just as through the disobedience

  221. of the one man,

  222. the many or all people

  223. were made sinners.

  224. It couldn't be more clear,

  225. could it?

  226. We have inherited

  227. Adam's sinful nature.

  228. We were born sinners.

  229. We were made sinners.

  230. But it's not all Adam's fault.

  231. It's our responsibility.

  232. Now we don't like that sort of thing

  233. and of course,

  234. there are objections to this.

  235. And there are objections

  236. in this passage here.

  237. First of all,

  238. you have the irreligious person,

  239. the person who doesn't bother

  240. with church

  241. and don't like reading

  242. their Bible

  243. and they say,

  244. well, how can you call me

  245. a sinner?

  246. Because I don't have a Bible

  247. and I've never read it.

  248. So how do I know

  249. if I'm doing something wrong?

  250. Well,

  251. Adam didn't have a Bible either,

  252. did he?

  253. But yet he was considered

  254. a sinner.

  255. Look at verse 13.

  256. For before the law was given,

  257. sin was in the world.

  258. But sin is not taken into account

  259. where there is no law.

  260. In other words,

  261. how can you judge me

  262. if I don't have the law?

  263. How can you say

  264. I've done something wrong

  265. if there's no basis

  266. to judge it against?

  267. Verse 14.

  268. Well, nevertheless,

  269. death reigned

  270. from the time of Adam

  271. to the time of Moses.

  272. Moses was the one

  273. who was given the law.

  274. Even over those

  275. who did not sin

  276. by breaking a command

  277. as Adam did.

  278. Let me try and explain

  279. that a bit more.

  280. Suppose you're driving home

  281. and you're very, very late

  282. for an appointment.

  283. So you take a shortcut

  284. over the back roads

  285. and at great speed

  286. you're dodging

  287. all the potholes,

  288. winding your way along

  289. and then suddenly

  290. you're stopped by the guards.

  291. and the conversation starts.

  292. But there was no sign officer.

  293. I didn't see a sign

  294. anywhere on the road

  295. and I haven't a clue

  296. what the speed limit is.

  297. Do you think he'd believe you?

  298. You see,

  299. regardless of whether

  300. there is a signpost or not,

  301. your conscience

  302. tells you

  303. what is right or wrong.

  304. You know

  305. it's dangerous driving

  306. and that you're guilty.

  307. And that's what he's saying

  308. here about Adam.

  309. He knows

  310. he's guilty

  311. whether he's got a Bible

  312. or not.

  313. But then second,

  314. the other objection

  315. is the religious person

  316. who does read their Bible

  317. and you'll always find them

  318. in church

  319. and they'll say

  320. well how can you call me

  321. a sinner?

  322. I do read my Bible

  323. and I do know

  324. what's right

  325. and what's wrong.

  326. Well look at verse 20.

  327. It says

  328. the law was added

  329. so that the trespass

  330. might increase.

  331. In other words,

  332. having a signpost

  333. before you

  334. that says

  335. 80 kilometres an hour

  336. is never going to stop you

  337. doing 100 kilometres an hour

  338. if you want to.

  339. It only tells you

  340. what the speed limit is.

  341. It can't stop you

  342. from doing it.

  343. In fact,

  344. it only tells you

  345. if you've broken the law.

  346. It actually judges you.

  347. And he's making

  348. the same point here.

  349. In other words,

  350. reading the Bible

  351. isn't going to stop you

  352. from sinning.

  353. Knowing what's right and wrong

  354. isn't going to make

  355. a type of difference

  356. in your life.

  357. It only makes you

  358. aware of sin.

  359. And you see,

  360. what Paul is doing here

  361. is he's reminding

  362. this church

  363. that he's writing to

  364. which is made up

  365. of a mixed bunch

  366. of people.

  367. There were Gentiles.

  368. They were people

  369. from a non-religious background.

  370. And then there were

  371. a bunch of Jews

  372. who were from

  373. a religious background.

  374. But he's saying

  375. you're exactly the same.

  376. He'd been telling them

  377. that back in chapter 3.

  378. You may have

  379. different cultures.

  380. You may have

  381. different family lines.

  382. But you know what?

  383. You are the same

  384. sinful people

  385. with the same

  386. sinful pedigree.

  387. And it's exactly

  388. the same for us.

  389. The uncomfortable truth

  390. is whether we're

  391. religious or irreligious,

  392. whether we've read

  393. our Bibles

  394. or we don't read

  395. our Bibles,

  396. we all have

  397. an inescapable likeness

  398. to Adam.

  399. We are all

  400. natural born sinners.

  401. Now this likeness

  402. brings about

  403. terrifying results.

  404. I'm sure we've all

  405. seen the news

  406. and read the papers

  407. and heard the story

  408. about Michaela Hart.

  409. A tragic event.

  410. Starting out

  411. on married life

  412. with all their dreams

  413. ahead of them.

  414. And of course

  415. people ask the question,

  416. why?

  417. Why did it happen?

  418. Well the things

  419. that I've read

  420. is that people say,

  421. well there wasn't

  422. enough security.

  423. If security was better

  424. it wouldn't have happened.

  425. Other people

  426. are saying,

  427. well in one part

  428. it's a very affluent

  429. kind of place

  430. but the people

  431. who are working there,

  432. well they're struggling

  433. with poverty

  434. and that's why

  435. they did it.

  436. Well whatever answer

  437. you come up with

  438. the true answer

  439. is sin.

  440. Those who did

  441. the murder,

  442. those who are convicted

  443. are all related

  444. to Adam.

  445. We might look

  446. at our own country

  447. and we give off

  448. about it

  449. and we say,

  450. well why is it

  451. the way it is?

  452. People will blame

  453. the markets

  454. and they'll say

  455. it's the banks.

  456. Well the true answer

  457. is it's sin.

  458. And those who have

  459. caused it all,

  460. ourselves included,

  461. are all related

  462. to Adam.

  463. And we look

  464. at our own lives.

  465. Stop looking

  466. at other people.

  467. Let's look at ourselves.

  468. Broken relationships,

  469. fallouts with family.

  470. Why does it all

  471. go so horribly wrong?

  472. Well there's always

  473. somebody else to blame.

  474. It's always

  475. somebody else's fault.

  476. But the true answer

  477. is we're all

  478. related to Adam.

  479. We live in a

  480. sin-wrecked world.

  481. And I'm sure

  482. we've also seen

  483. all the pictures

  484. of the flooding

  485. in Queensland

  486. in Australia.

  487. Did you see the way

  488. the Brisbane River

  489. has overflowed

  490. and it spilled out

  491. right the way

  492. through the city

  493. down every street

  494. and into every

  495. neighbourhood

  496. causing devastation

  497. and destruction?

  498. Well the first sin

  499. of the first man

  500. way back in the

  501. Garden of Eden

  502. has been flowing

  503. through the world

  504. ever since

  505. and its overflowing

  506. effects has caused

  507. universal destruction.

  508. we see it all

  509. around us.

  510. The world is

  511. terribly broken.

  512. But we can't

  513. keep pointing back

  514. to Adam and blame

  515. him.

  516. We must put our

  517. hand up because

  518. we are all

  519. responsible.

  520. Look at verse 18.

  521. Consequently,

  522. just as the result

  523. of one

  524. trespass

  525. with condemnation

  526. for

  527. all

  528. people.

  529. Well you say,

  530. is that it?

  531. That somehow

  532. I'm tied in

  533. in my relationship

  534. through to Adam

  535. that we live

  536. in this sin-wrecked

  537. world and

  538. my life is sinful

  539. and is that it?

  540. Is there any way

  541. to change our

  542. likeness?

  543. Is there any way

  544. to change the world

  545. in which we live?

  546. Well,

  547. thankfully there is.

  548. There is,

  549. secondly,

  550. a remarkable

  551. intervention.

  552. Look at verse 14.

  553. The very last

  554. sentence of verse 14.

  555. It says that

  556. Adam

  557. was a pattern

  558. of the one

  559. to come.

  560. Do you see that phrase?

  561. He was a pattern

  562. of the one to come.

  563. The one to come

  564. was, of course,

  565. Jesus Christ.

  566. The one who can

  567. not only stop

  568. all the destruction

  569. but actually

  570. reverse it.

  571. Now when it says

  572. that Adam is a

  573. pattern of the one

  574. to come,

  575. it's not saying

  576. that Adam is the

  577. same as Christ

  578. but that he's a

  579. pattern.

  580. Let me explain.

  581. Just as the

  582. single act of Adam

  583. caused death

  584. and destruction

  585. in the world,

  586. so the single

  587. act of Christ

  588. has brought life

  589. and transformation.

  590. The one act

  591. of Adam

  592. has caused

  593. death and destruction

  594. but the one

  595. act of Christ

  596. has brought life

  597. and transformation.

  598. Read verse 19

  599. and we'll get a

  600. better picture.

  601. for just as

  602. through the

  603. disobedience

  604. of the one

  605. man the many

  606. were made

  607. sinners,

  608. so through

  609. the obedience

  610. of the one

  611. man,

  612. that's Jesus,

  613. the many

  614. will be made

  615. righteous.

  616. They're not

  617. the same

  618. but their

  619. actions

  620. both have

  621. major consequences.

  622. In fact,

  623. what this passage

  624. is telling us

  625. that what Jesus

  626. has done

  627. is far superior

  628. and far

  629. greater.

  630. The transformation

  631. of Jesus

  632. is far greater

  633. than the

  634. destruction

  635. of Adam.

  636. First,

  637. the intervention

  638. of grace.

  639. Look at verse 15.

  640. He says,

  641. the gift is not

  642. like the

  643. trespass.

  644. In other words,

  645. Jesus is not

  646. like what Adam

  647. did.

  648. For if the

  649. many died

  650. by the

  651. trespass

  652. of the

  653. one man,

  654. how much

  655. more did

  656. God's grace

  657. and the

  658. gift that

  659. came by

  660. the grace

  661. of the

  662. one man,

  663. Jesus Christ,

  664. overflow

  665. to the

  666. many?

  667. Now,

  668. Adam's

  669. action

  670. resulted in

  671. the death

  672. of many.

  673. That's what

  674. it's saying.

  675. If we think

  676. of that image

  677. again of the

  678. flooding river,

  679. the flood

  680. only started

  681. with a few

  682. drops of

  683. rain.

  684. And as the

  685. rains continued

  686. to fall,

  687. so the river

  688. began to swell.

  689. And at first

  690. it seems fine

  691. that it's all

  692. controlled and

  693. that nothing's

  694. going to happen.

  695. But the more

  696. rain that falls,

  697. the more and

  698. more it

  699. fills and

  700. the worse it

  701. becomes.

  702. And that's

  703. what it's saying

  704. here about

  705. Adam.

  706. His first sin

  707. was like the

  708. first drops of

  709. rain in a

  710. flood.

  711. All the time

  712. expanding and

  713. increasing in

  714. depth.

  715. And it

  716. spreads

  717. throughout

  718. history

  719. causing

  720. widespread

  721. devastation.

  722. But the

  723. point here

  724. is that

  725. Jesus Christ

  726. came and

  727. intervened.

  728. He broke

  729. into this

  730. world to

  731. stop the

  732. terrifying and

  733. terrible effect

  734. of sin.

  735. Look at the

  736. second part of

  737. verse 15

  738. again.

  739. It says,

  740. How much

  741. more did

  742. God's grace

  743. and the gift

  744. that came by

  745. the grace of

  746. the one man,

  747. Jesus Christ,

  748. overflow to

  749. the many.

  750. If you try and

  751. picture a

  752. different scene

  753. in your mind

  754. of a desert

  755. wasteland,

  756. barren and

  757. lifeless,

  758. a cracked,

  759. dried up

  760. riverbed,

  761. but then a

  762. stream of

  763. water begins

  764. to flow,

  765. bringing with

  766. it life.

  767. And as the

  768. river begins

  769. to fill,

  770. it overflows

  771. and it

  772. spills out

  773. into the

  774. surrounding

  775. plains.

  776. And that's

  777. the picture

  778. that we have

  779. here,

  780. that the

  781. overflow of

  782. God's grace

  783. can spill

  784. out from

  785. that one

  786. man,

  787. Jesus Christ.

  788. It

  789. overflows and

  790. spills out

  791. into the

  792. lives of

  793. many,

  794. bringing with

  795. it life.

  796. verse 16.

  797. Again, the

  798. gift of

  799. God is not

  800. like the

  801. result of

  802. the one

  803. man's sin.

  804. The judgment

  805. followed one

  806. sin and

  807. brought

  808. condemnation,

  809. but the

  810. gift followed

  811. many

  812. trespasses and

  813. brought

  814. justification.

  815. the river

  816. in Brisbane

  817. has overflowed

  818. causing chaos

  819. and destruction.

  820. Now in

  821. hindsight, I

  822. guess what was

  823. required would

  824. have been a

  825. great big

  826. barrier at the

  827. head of the

  828. river to

  829. stop any

  830. kind of

  831. flooding coming

  832. into the

  833. city.

  834. Well picture

  835. now Christ

  836. on the

  837. cross with

  838. loving arms

  839. open wide.

  840. And it's

  841. like he

  842. stands before

  843. all mankind

  844. as the

  845. barrier.

  846. The one who

  847. absorbs the

  848. torrent of

  849. destruction of

  850. our sin.

  851. Again, look at

  852. the second part

  853. of verse 16.

  854. The judgment

  855. followed one

  856. sin and

  857. brought

  858. condemnation,

  859. but the

  860. gift followed

  861. many trespasses

  862. and brought

  863. justification.

  864. the judgment

  865. and the

  866. condemnation,

  867. the torrent

  868. of God's

  869. wrath,

  870. flowed and

  871. it fell on

  872. Christ.

  873. And so all

  874. those who

  875. turn to

  876. Christ and

  877. find their

  878. rescue in

  879. Him are

  880. declared right

  881. with God.

  882. But there

  883. is more

  884. than just

  885. intervention.

  886. There is

  887. also

  888. transformation.

  889. Look at

  890. verse 17.

  891. For if

  892. by the

  893. trespass of

  894. the one

  895. man,

  896. death

  897. reigned

  898. through that

  899. one man,

  900. how much

  901. more will

  902. those who

  903. receive God's

  904. abundant

  905. provision of

  906. grace and

  907. of the gift

  908. of righteousness

  909. reign in

  910. life through

  911. the one

  912. man,

  913. Jesus

  914. Christ?

  915. Because of

  916. our relationship

  917. to Adam,

  918. we're told that

  919. death reigns,

  920. sin reigns,

  921. it's hopeless,

  922. it's empty,

  923. it's a

  924. terrible life.

  925. But now,

  926. because of

  927. God's abundant

  928. provision of

  929. grace in

  930. our lives,

  931. we have been

  932. completely

  933. transformed.

  934. Look at the

  935. contrast that

  936. we have in

  937. verse 17.

  938. Because of

  939. sin,

  940. death reigns

  941. in us,

  942. but now

  943. because of

  944. Christ,

  945. it says we

  946. reign in

  947. life.

  948. It's not just

  949. that we move

  950. from death to

  951. life,

  952. it's more

  953. than that.

  954. It says we

  955. reign in

  956. life.

  957. Way back in

  958. the Garden of

  959. Eden, what we

  960. read in

  961. Genesis,

  962. Adam was

  963. given the

  964. job to

  965. rule over

  966. the creation.

  967. He was

  968. living in a

  969. sinless world,

  970. enjoying paradise

  971. in all of

  972. its beauty.

  973. But he

  974. wrecked it,

  975. and we

  976. have wrecked

  977. it.

  978. But now

  979. through Christ,

  980. we are given

  981. grace,

  982. to reign,

  983. literally to

  984. rule in

  985. life,

  986. to be able

  987. to do the

  988. job that

  989. Adam failed

  990. to do,

  991. to look after

  992. God's world

  993. properly,

  994. to live in

  995. God's world

  996. the way we're

  997. meant to.

  998. It's a picture

  999. of a great

  1000. king who's

  1001. reaching out

  1002. to one of

  1003. his enemies,

  1004. a rebel,

  1005. reaching out

  1006. beyond the

  1007. walls of

  1008. his city,

  1009. making him

  1010. a prince,

  1011. and inviting

  1012. him into

  1013. the city,

  1014. and giving

  1015. him a new

  1016. position to

  1017. live in

  1018. his kingdom,

  1019. to enjoy

  1020. its beauty

  1021. and safety

  1022. and security,

  1023. and say,

  1024. now rule

  1025. this land.

  1026. It's a

  1027. complete

  1028. transformation.

  1029. And that's

  1030. exactly what

  1031. God's grace

  1032. has done in

  1033. our lives

  1034. if we have

  1035. accepted it.

  1036. He has

  1037. transformed our

  1038. life from

  1039. being outside

  1040. to inside,

  1041. but more than

  1042. that,

  1043. he says,

  1044. now I want

  1045. you to

  1046. reign in

  1047. life,

  1048. to rule.

  1049. And of

  1050. course,

  1051. we do

  1052. live with

  1053. the ongoing

  1054. consequences

  1055. of sin,

  1056. but a

  1057. time will

  1058. come when

  1059. all those

  1060. who accept

  1061. his grace

  1062. are going

  1063. to reign

  1064. with King

  1065. Jesus in

  1066. the new

  1067. heavens and

  1068. the new

  1069. earth,

  1070. where we

  1071. will be

  1072. living in

  1073. paradise as

  1074. a prince

  1075. or a

  1076. princess.

  1077. Listening to

  1078. the reports

  1079. of what

  1080. happened to

  1081. Michaela Hart,

  1082. I listened to

  1083. one lady who

  1084. was a resident

  1085. there and

  1086. she said,

  1087. this country

  1088. is like

  1089. paradise.

  1090. She described

  1091. it as

  1092. heaven on

  1093. earth.

  1094. But then

  1095. this awful

  1096. tragedy,

  1097. this murder,

  1098. and she

  1099. couldn't come

  1100. to terms with

  1101. it.

  1102. How this

  1103. place,

  1104. where everybody

  1105. was so kind

  1106. and so

  1107. hospitable,

  1108. heaven on

  1109. earth,

  1110. and now

  1111. it's all

  1112. been destroyed.

  1113. Well,

  1114. that's just a

  1115. little glimpse

  1116. of the whole

  1117. world,

  1118. isn't it?

  1119. People think

  1120. it's heaven

  1121. on earth.

  1122. It's not.

  1123. It's a mess.

  1124. It's broken.

  1125. But we

  1126. have been

  1127. changed.

  1128. We have

  1129. been transformed

  1130. to somehow

  1131. bring heaven

  1132. to earth

  1133. to live

  1134. differently,

  1135. to be the

  1136. different kind

  1137. of people

  1138. God wants

  1139. us to be.

  1140. all the

  1141. while as

  1142. we await

  1143. for paradise

  1144. itself.

  1145. This is the

  1146. transformation

  1147. that grace

  1148. brings.

  1149. And the

  1150. results are

  1151. amazing.

  1152. Look at

  1153. verse 18.

  1154. Consequently,

  1155. and again

  1156. here, look at

  1157. the contrast

  1158. in these

  1159. verses.

  1160. Consequently,

  1161. just as the

  1162. result of one

  1163. trespass was

  1164. condemnation for

  1165. all men,

  1166. was so also

  1167. the result of

  1168. one act of

  1169. righteousness

  1170. was justification

  1171. that brings

  1172. life for all

  1173. men.

  1174. Here's another

  1175. contrast,

  1176. verse 19.

  1177. For just

  1178. through the

  1179. disobedience of

  1180. the one man,

  1181. the many were

  1182. made sinners,

  1183. so also

  1184. through the

  1185. obedience of

  1186. the one man,

  1187. the many will

  1188. be made

  1189. righteous.

  1190. This change,

  1191. this transformation,

  1192. it's all down

  1193. to God's

  1194. amazing grace.

  1195. Yes,

  1196. sin is

  1197. serious.

  1198. Sin is

  1199. devastating.

  1200. Sin is

  1201. destructive.

  1202. But God's

  1203. grace is

  1204. superior and

  1205. greater.

  1206. Look at the

  1207. second part of

  1208. verse 20.

  1209. Where sin

  1210. increased,

  1211. grace

  1212. increased all

  1213. the more.

  1214. There's so

  1215. much mess,

  1216. but where

  1217. there is so

  1218. much mess,

  1219. God's

  1220. intervening

  1221. grace is

  1222. so much

  1223. greater.

  1224. One writer

  1225. put it like

  1226. this,

  1227. there is

  1228. more grace

  1229. in Jesus

  1230. than there

  1231. is sin

  1232. in me.

  1233. I'm delighted

  1234. with that

  1235. news.

  1236. There is

  1237. more grace

  1238. in Jesus

  1239. than there

  1240. is sin

  1241. in me.

  1242. Do you see

  1243. what it said

  1244. at the second

  1245. part of

  1246. verse 15?

  1247. There is

  1248. this repeated

  1249. phrase in

  1250. verse 15

  1251. and 17,

  1252. how much

  1253. more?

  1254. How much

  1255. more?

  1256. There is so

  1257. much sin in

  1258. my life

  1259. that causes

  1260. so much

  1261. heartache.

  1262. How much

  1263. more did

  1264. God's grace

  1265. and the gift

  1266. that came by

  1267. the grace of

  1268. the one man,

  1269. Jesus Christ

  1270. overflow

  1271. into my

  1272. life

  1273. and into

  1274. your life.

  1275. Verse 17,

  1276. look at that

  1277. phrase again,

  1278. how much

  1279. more?

  1280. How much

  1281. sin

  1282. wrecks and

  1283. ruins

  1284. our lives

  1285. and the

  1286. world around

  1287. us,

  1288. but how

  1289. much more

  1290. will those

  1291. who receive

  1292. God's abundant

  1293. provision of

  1294. grace

  1295. and of the

  1296. gift of

  1297. righteousness

  1298. reign in

  1299. life

  1300. through

  1301. Jesus

  1302. Christ.

  1303. The

  1304. abundant

  1305. provision of

  1306. grace that

  1307. overflows into

  1308. our lives by

  1309. faith in

  1310. Christ is

  1311. more than

  1312. sufficient to

  1313. cover up all

  1314. of our sin,

  1315. all of our

  1316. mess, past,

  1317. present and

  1318. future.

  1319. There is

  1320. nothing,

  1321. and I mean

  1322. absolutely

  1323. nothing that we

  1324. have ever done

  1325. or said or

  1326. thought no

  1327. matter how much

  1328. has accumulated

  1329. through our

  1330. lives,

  1331. that His

  1332. grace isn't

  1333. big enough

  1334. or great

  1335. enough to

  1336. clean us

  1337. and to

  1338. renew us

  1339. and transform

  1340. us every

  1341. single day.

  1342. If somebody

  1343. says they

  1344. are too

  1345. far gone,

  1346. they haven't

  1347. really understood

  1348. the measure

  1349. and the

  1350. abundance of

  1351. God's grace.

  1352. God's grace.

  1353. It's so

  1354. transforming

  1355. that it

  1356. transfers us

  1357. from being

  1358. part of

  1359. the Adams

  1360. family, and

  1361. we know what

  1362. they're like,

  1363. they're a bunch

  1364. of funny

  1365. people, aren't

  1366. they?

  1367. We're

  1368. transformed from

  1369. the Adams

  1370. family,

  1371. literally,

  1372. and transferred

  1373. into Christ's

  1374. family.

  1375. He owns

  1376. us, we

  1377. belong to

  1378. Him.

  1379. Verse 21,

  1380. so that

  1381. just as

  1382. sin reigned

  1383. in death,

  1384. so also

  1385. grace might

  1386. reign through

  1387. righteousness

  1388. to bring

  1389. eternal life

  1390. through Jesus

  1391. Christ our

  1392. Lord.

  1393. Since we

  1394. come into

  1395. Christ,

  1396. this family

  1397. is where

  1398. grace reigns.

  1399. Grace is to

  1400. be the

  1401. family motto.

  1402. if we

  1403. could have

  1404. any

  1405. banner

  1406. above that

  1407. door as

  1408. you came

  1409. in, it

  1410. would be

  1411. the word

  1412. grace.

  1413. Grace is to

  1414. be the

  1415. family motto.

  1416. We

  1417. remember, in

  1418. fact, we are

  1419. to never to

  1420. forget where

  1421. we all came

  1422. from.

  1423. We all come

  1424. from the same

  1425. family.

  1426. We all have a

  1427. sinful nature.

  1428. We're all

  1429. equally messed

  1430. up.

  1431. It's just that

  1432. some people are

  1433. better at hiding

  1434. their mess

  1435. than others.

  1436. We are all

  1437. natural born

  1438. sinners.

  1439. I don't care

  1440. what your

  1441. background is

  1442. or who you

  1443. are.

  1444. And he is

  1445. reminding these

  1446. people here,

  1447. the Jews,

  1448. the Gentiles,

  1449. divided amongst

  1450. themselves,

  1451. one thinking

  1452. superior,

  1453. one thinking

  1454. inferior.

  1455. Forget it.

  1456. You're all

  1457. the same.

  1458. So don't

  1459. start looking

  1460. down and

  1461. judging and

  1462. condemning and

  1463. pointing fingers

  1464. at one another.

  1465. don't be

  1466. taking pride

  1467. in your new

  1468. family as if

  1469. you somehow

  1470. deserve it.

  1471. It's all

  1472. by grace.

  1473. And this

  1474. grace is to

  1475. be available

  1476. for everyone.

  1477. It's not

  1478. just for the

  1479. people who

  1480. are in this

  1481. room.

  1482. Look at the

  1483. size of the

  1484. hall.

  1485. The majority

  1486. of it is

  1487. empty.

  1488. Remember

  1489. what it

  1490. said,

  1491. verse 15.

  1492. It says

  1493. it overflows.

  1494. It

  1495. overflows.

  1496. Verse 17.

  1497. There is an

  1498. abundant

  1499. provision of

  1500. God's grace.

  1501. It's not just

  1502. that there's a

  1503. small amount

  1504. dished out to

  1505. a few people

  1506. and it's

  1507. only for the

  1508. few.

  1509. It overflows.

  1510. There's an

  1511. abundance of

  1512. it.

  1513. And as we

  1514. come into

  1515. this new

  1516. family,

  1517. God's

  1518. abundant

  1519. grace is to

  1520. flow from

  1521. us,

  1522. from our

  1523. lives,

  1524. into a

  1525. world which

  1526. is broken

  1527. by sin,

  1528. where people

  1529. live with the

  1530. devastation and

  1531. destruction of

  1532. it every

  1533. single day.

  1534. And we are

  1535. to bring that

  1536. grace to

  1537. people's life,

  1538. to bring that

  1539. healing,

  1540. to bring that

  1541. restoration,

  1542. to show them a

  1543. better way,

  1544. to show them a

  1545. new way.

  1546. family.

  1547. And so

  1548. together we

  1549. are to be a

  1550. united family

  1551. under the

  1552. banner of

  1553. grace,

  1554. a family that

  1555. bubbles over

  1556. and it floods

  1557. the community

  1558. with God's

  1559. grace.

  1560. Picture the

  1561. scene of the

  1562. river flowing

  1563. through Brisbane.

  1564. Now put your

  1565. minds and just

  1566. think of that as

  1567. grace flowing

  1568. out through the

  1569. community into

  1570. every home and

  1571. every person that

  1572. you come in

  1573. contact with.

  1574. God's grace is

  1575. so much greater

  1576. than sin,

  1577. so much more

  1578. powerful.

  1579. And when we

  1580. have grasped

  1581. grace, sin

  1582. will no longer

  1583. reign, but we

  1584. will reign in

  1585. life.

  1586. Let's pray

  1587. together.

  1588. Amen.

  1589. Amen.

  1590. Amen.

  1591. Amen.

  1592. Amen.

  1593. Amen.

  1594. Amen.

  1595. Amen.

  1596. Amen.

  1597. Amen.

  1598. Amen.

  1599. Amen.

  1600. Amen.

  1601. Amen.

  1602. Amen.

  1603. Amen.

  1604. Amen.
