  1. Ephesians chapter 1, we're going to read from verses 3 down to 14, and it's on page 1173

    Ephesians 1 chapter mention

  2. if you're using a red-covered Bible. Let's listen to God speak to us as we read this.

  3. Amen.

  4. He has freely given us in the one he loves. In him we have redemption through his blood,

  5. the forgiveness of sins in accordance with the riches of God's grace that he has lavished on us

  6. with all wisdom and understanding. And he made known to us the mystery of his will according to

  7. his good pleasure which he purposed in Christ, to be put into effect when the times have reached

  8. their fulfillment, to bring all things in heaven and on earth together under one head, even Christ.

  9. In him we were also chosen, having been predestined according to the plan of him who works out

  10. everything in conformity with the purpose of his will, in order that we who were the first to hope

  11. in Christ might be for the praise of his glory. And you also were included in Christ when you heard

  12. the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation. Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal,

  13. the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption

  14. of those who are God's possession, to the praise of his glory. Ken. Before Ken speaks, I'm just going to pray for him

  15. and for us. Let's pray. Our Father God, we thank you for your word. We thank you that it's in our language

  16. that we can read, but without your Holy Spirit we will not understand and it will not change us or transform us.

  17. So we ask that by your Spirit you would speak into our lives today. We pray for Ken. We ask that you would

  18. help him to communicate effectively and clearly the truth of your word. We pray that you will bless

  19. his ministry and his work, his teaching ministry in the college. We pray for his visits to Peru,

  20. that he would be an encouragement to the church there and that you would continue to help him

  21. as he seeks to bring the gospel and encourage the church worldwide with the good news of Christ.

  22. Christ. We ask these things in Jesus' name. Amen.

  23. Good morning again. I want to say it's a privilege to be here and to enjoy fellowship. I was going to

  24. say the warmth of fellowship. The fellowship's good. The building's cold. I understand why you have tea

  25. and coffee. I think that's great. And I've drunk Barry's tea for the first time in my life. Some

  26. people drink nothing but, I'm told. Anyway, today I was asked a question about what I'm doing now that

  27. I'm going to retire quite soon. I'm going to tell you a secret before I begin to preach. Today is my

  28. birthday. A very kind gentleman guessed me at 51. I think that was flattery. I'm 62 today and life has

  29. gone very quickly. Life moves along very swiftly, doesn't it? And it's good to be able to live for

  30. the Lord and to know the Lord. And the theme today is mission. The whole weekend has been mission and

  31. we've been thinking about mission and hostility. But really what I want to do today is perhaps pick up

  32. the idea of mission and preach a sermon that may not be so typical. I want to reflect on why I am doing

  33. what I do at this time, but not to make it that personal, to actually look at the scriptures and to see

  34. what the scriptures say. And we've read together a lovely passage, Ephesians 1, 3 to 14, which I think is a

  35. great passage on mission, but I'm not going to expound it. But really that is the background to what we're

  36. going to do today. Before we get into the Word of God, let's pray. Father, again we pray. And once again,

  37. our God and Father, we thank you that mission is part of your sovereign activity in the realm of

  38. redemption in the world. And Father, we know that from first to last, it's your mission. It's not our

  39. mission. We're involved in mission not because of us, but because of you. And Father, we know that

  40. mission and the gospel of Jesus Christ originated in your heart. It's based on your love, determined by

  41. your will. And the mandate was enunciated in the Word of God through the will of God. And Father,

  42. we know that it is all explained. The rationale for mission is explained in the Word of God.

  43. And the ultimate success and fulfillment depends on your power, not on us. Depends on your sovereignty

  44. and not on our human will. Help us, Father, we pray, to proclaim the gospel, knowing that people

  45. will believe because the gospel is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes in you.

  46. We ask in Jesus' name. Amen.

  47. So, when I sit in my office in Belfast, in Moira, and think about mission, these are the thoughts that

  48. come to my mind. And I want to share them today. And the starting place for mission is not me.

  49. It's not you. It's not us. Nor is it the lostness of the world. Nor the command to go.

  50. The mandate for mission lies within God and His desire to have a relationship with His creation.

  51. So, this is my weak attempt to try to articulate what I believe the Bible teaches about mission.

  52. And this church, every church, the church of Jesus Christ, and it's much bigger than any little local church,

  53. exists because God is a missionary God. We can certainly say that. And God works through His Son.

  54. He works through His Spirit. And without God's work, I would have nothing to do. You would have nothing to do.

  55. The great thing about the mission of God is, and we were reading about it in Ephesians chapter 1,

    Ephesians 1 chapter mention

  56. is that the mission of God stretches from eternity to eternity.

  57. Long before we came here, and I have to say, long after we will be gone from here.

  58. What excites me when I look at the New Testament and the scripture about mission is,

  59. that all the verbs connected to mission and God. If we have to be convinced it's God's mission,

  60. think of the verbs, the action words. God loves. Action. God sends. Action. God chooses. Action.

  61. God predestines. Some people will have a ball game just because I mentioned that word.

  62. God does that. Action. God speaks. God creates. God plans. He sends. He moves by His Spirit.

  63. And I have two big brush strokes this morning. And when I think about these two things,

  64. my heart, I think, is kept right in regard to mission. I don't get the thing out of sync.

  65. I don't lose too much sleep. And I follow the Lord more easily.

  66. The first thing I want to say this morning, very simply, is this.

  67. The primary motivation for mission, for you, for me, for everyone in the whole world,

  68. is for the glory of God. That is the primary goal and the motivation of mission.

  69. It's all about God. Let me clarify. Mission is not to do, has not to do,

  70. in the first place, with the welfare and glory of the human race.

  71. It's not about the growth and expansion of the church. When we think that's what it's all about,

  72. we lose our vision and our focus. It's about the glory of God. And that forms the highest goal

  73. of mission. And the ultimate goal is that God will be glorified as His people, that's us,

  74. tell other people about His greatness, and as people who are at enmity with God,

  75. come to faith in Jesus Christ. That's about as simply as I can put it.

  76. Mission is church-centered. That's why we're talking about mission today. That's why there's a mission weekend.

  77. And the church, us, we are the means of mission, and we are the goal of mission.

  78. Does that make sense? We're how it's done. And it's all done so that people will be added to the church of Jesus Christ.

  79. And again, the church is much bigger than anything that many of us might think about.

  80. That's the goal and the aim. And the goal is to gather people into the community of local churches in the world.

  81. And what do we do here? We've been doing it today.

  82. Where we worship God. We've been doing that.

  83. Where we equip people to grow in a relationship with God.

  84. And that's why we're here today.

  85. And where we share God, where we share Jesus Christ and the gospel with other people.

  86. And that's not necessarily done within four walls.

  87. The church of Jesus Christ has legs.

  88. And we walk.

  89. And we leave the building.

  90. I come from the north.

  91. I say that.

  92. I've lived in the north since 1991.

  93. If I was preaching today in the north, you know this.

  94. I would have a suit on.

  95. I would have a tie on.

  96. Yes, I would.

  97. Just so that I wouldn't offend certain people.

  98. That's what I would do.

  99. And we would probably be seated in some of the most lovely buildings in the world.

  100. And my wife would be throwing off her cabigans because it would be far too warm.

  101. That's just how it is.

  102. And sometimes, perhaps, we can get connected to the building.

  103. So let's disconnect from the building.

  104. We know that.

  105. We are the church.

  106. And we are the goal.

  107. People like you and me.

  108. And so what I want to do today, and I'm picking this up from Johnny.

  109. He was saying something like this.

  110. And this is my paraphrase.

  111. I simply want to challenge you and me, and I need to be challenged all the time,

  112. to think about mission, about the practice of mission,

  113. and perhaps to process all the stuff we've got into our heads and hearts over the weekend.

  114. Yesterday we were blitzed, weren't we?

  115. And sometimes when we're blitzed by it, statistics, how many Christians, where the church has been persecuted,

  116. where things are not like that, and so forth, we don't know what to do with all that stuff.

  117. So we think.

  118. But I also want us to feel.

  119. And I want us to feel the motivation for mission.

  120. And then I want us to take the responsibility.

  121. Now, we can't be responsible for all of mission.

  122. And if I had my way, I would have all of you today picking up the four little boxes that remain

  123. and saying, I want to support Baptist missions.

  124. By the way, take them.

  125. Because I'm going up in public transport today, and I'd rather not have all the stuff to carry along with me.

  126. So take them and support Baptist missions.

  127. And especially the radio in Peru.

  128. Isn't that right, Tom?

  129. There we go.

  130. But I want us to think about responsibility about mission.

  131. Now, we can't do everything.

  132. All the Lord will ask you to do and me to do is something.

  133. Something.

  134. Maybe more than we've done up until this time.

  135. So let's go back.

  136. First big brush stroke.

  137. And I don't want to lose this from my thinking, your thinking.

  138. Because it's really what the Bible teaches.

  139. The primary motivation is the glory of God.

  140. And when you think about that, that keeps our hearts right.

  141. Doesn't it?

  142. And we can share in that because you and I, and we've read about it,

  143. are co-heirs with Christ.

  144. And the scripture goes on to say, if we share in his sufferings.

  145. And I don't think there is any Christianity without suffering.

  146. I had a little quote I was going to throw in yesterday, but I couldn't do it.

  147. I didn't have time.

  148. Archbishop Festo Kivingeri from the Anglican Church in Africa,

  149. speaking at the anniversary of the martyrdom of a Ugandan archbishop,

  150. said this, said this,

  151. Without bleeding, the church fails to bless.

  152. Now that sounds very tough, doesn't it?

  153. Without bleeding, the church fails to bless.

  154. And sometimes we want very comfortable lives.

  155. But I'll tell you this, following Jesus Christ,

  156. sooner or later, will cost us some kind of suffering.

  157. I don't mean physical, necessarily.

  158. It will cost us perhaps somebody laughing.

  159. It will cost us something along the way,

  160. where people make it a little bit difficult for us to follow Jesus,

  161. and to believe the simple faith that we have in him.

  162. And it's still true, co-heirs with Christ,

  163. if we share in his sufferings.

  164. Being willing to lay down our lives for Jesus.

  165. It's never all blessings at no cost.

  166. And that's true for the church here.

  167. It's true for every church, everywhere.

  168. We won't see the full blessing of God,

  169. unless somewhere along the line,

  170. there's a tough element to following the Lord Jesus Christ.

  171. Now that leads me to my second motivation for mission.

  172. And if you have your Bibles, please,

  173. I want to pick it up now in 2 Corinthians chapter 5, please.

    2 Corinthians 5 chapter mention

  174. In verse 18.

  175. And Paul is talking about you and me,

  176. and about what you and I are called to be in Christ.

  177. 2 Corinthians chapter 5 and verse 18.

    2 Corinthians 5 chapter mention

  178. I'm just going to pick out a few verses,

  179. because for me,

  180. this is what you and I do.

  181. And are.

  182. And all of this is a gift from God,

  183. who brought us back to himself through Christ.

  184. And God has given us this task of reconciling people to him.

  185. For God was in Christ,

  186. reconciling the world to himself,

  187. no longer counting people's sins against them.

  188. And he gave us this wonderful message of reconciliation.

  189. And I love this verse.

  190. This is what you and I do.

  191. So, you and I are Christ's ambassadors.

  192. God is making his appeal through us.

  193. We speak for Christ when we plead,

  194. come back to God.

  195. The secondary motivation for mission,

  196. and these are the only two main points I have this morning,

  197. is the ministry of reconciliation.

  198. I can think of nothing more exciting than that.

  199. The ultimate goal?

  200. God's glory.

  201. And that includes the reconciliation of this world to God.

  202. Now, Jesus is here today by the Holy Spirit.

  203. And Jesus empowers you and me by his Spirit.

  204. And you and I are involved as members of a church,

  205. as part of the body of Jesus Christ,

  206. on Christ's behalf.

  207. And we ask people,

  208. we implore people,

  209. to be reconciled to God.

  210. And Paul goes on to say,

  211. it is just as if we do so on Christ's behalf.

  212. Now, when I used to tell my school friends,

  213. into my teen years,

  214. when I went through grammar school,

  215. that I wanted to be a missionary,

  216. actually, I believed then,

  217. and I still believe,

  218. that perhaps the Lord had given me the privilege,

  219. of being called to do

  220. one of the most wonderful things in the world.

  221. But every Christian is called to do exactly the same.

  222. And that is to call people to come back to God.

  223. And we believe that.

  224. And we certainly believe,

  225. in 1 Corinthians 15, verse 3,

    1 Corinthians 15:3

  226. that Jesus Christ died,

  227. he was buried,

  228. and that he rose again.

  229. And if a person does not believe that,

  230. Paul goes on to say,

  231. in 1 Corinthians 15,

  232. if a person does not believe that Jesus died,

  233. was buried,

  234. and rose again for their sins,

  235. that person is not a Christian.

  236. And a lot of people say they're Christians

  237. because they do good works.

  238. And I think it's excellent that people do good things.

  239. And none of us can ever criticize that.

  240. And we certainly know

  241. that there's a general goodness of God in the world.

  242. But we believe that the resurrected Christ

  243. appears to people,

  244. and changes their lives.

  245. Now that's a simple,

  246. powerful message.

  247. Paul.

  248. What a wonderful testimony.

  249. Against the church.

  250. Against Christians.

  251. Locking them in prison.

  252. And totally opposed to the ideology.

  253. And then God

  254. showed the resurrected Christ to Paul

  255. on the Damascus road.

  256. And he was absolutely changed.

  257. James,

  258. the half-brother of Jesus,

  259. mentioned in 1 Corinthians 15.

  260. The half-brother of Jesus,

  261. who when Jesus was alive,

  262. said about Jesus,

  263. he's beside himself.

  264. Actually,

  265. he was saying

  266. that Jesus

  267. was a little bit

  268. out of his mind

  269. at that point.

  270. Didn't believe in Jesus.

  271. You know,

  272. I find that a tremendous comfort.

  273. Sometimes people say to me,

  274. I try to live for Jesus

  275. in my family,

  276. and people

  277. don't want to hear.

  278. Can you imagine

  279. that Jesus,

  280. the very Son of God,

  281. walking on the earth,

  282. and his own half-brother

  283. had no faith.

  284. And then he came to faith

  285. and changed.

  286. Other people were changed.

  287. And I love the story of Peter,

  288. mentioned in 1 Corinthians 15.

  289. The failure.

  290. The man who wanted

  291. to follow Jesus

  292. and didn't manage to do so.

  293. And the resurrected Christ

  294. appeared to him.

  295. Do you not think

  296. that sometimes

  297. we give Peter

  298. bad press?

  299. We think that Peter's

  300. the headstrong man.

  301. We think that Peter's

  302. the one who,

  303. you know,

  304. says,

  305. I'm going to follow Jesus

  306. and he gets it all wrong.

  307. But the thing

  308. that changed me

  309. and my view on Peter

  310. is I've read one Peter,

  311. I've read two Peter.

  312. And when we read that,

  313. we have another kind of Peter,

  314. a mature man

  315. going on.

  316. Changed.

  317. So exciting.

  318. That's the message

  319. that you and I have.

  320. Jesus died,

  321. was buried

  322. and rose again

  323. for our sins.

  324. And when we believe that,

  325. things change.

  326. In Peru,

  327. I'll give you a statistic.

  328. Incidentally,

  329. please take these things.

  330. They're heavy.

  331. I don't want to carry them

  332. on the bus, really.

  333. And you read about Peru,

  334. you read about Spain,

  335. France,

  336. different places,

  337. Baptist missions works.

  338. When I went to Peru

  339. in 1973,

  340. before many of you

  341. were born,

  342. 1 to 1.5%

  343. of the Peruvian population

  344. professed

  345. evangelical faith.

  346. Let's put it that way.

  347. According to government

  348. figures in Peru now,

  349. 12.5%

  350. God has done

  351. wonderful things.

  352. Peru's very different.

  353. I get in a taxi

  354. in Belfast

  355. and we talk about

  356. everything.

  357. I get in a taxi

  358. in Peru

  359. and the guy says to me,

  360. you're not from here.

  361. No.

  362. What brings you here?

  363. And I say,

  364. well, I'm a missionary.

  365. I'm a Christian.

  366. And we have a conversation.

  367. And within minutes

  368. we can be talking

  369. about spiritual things.

  370. People are so religious

  371. in Peru

  372. and so open

  373. in a way that perhaps

  374. they aren't here.

  375. So I've been spoiled

  376. working in that.

  377. Now,

  378. let's bring it back here.

  379. This ministry

  380. of reconciliation.

  381. And you're probably saying,

  382. do I have to go to Peru?

  383. Does everybody have to go

  384. somewhere else?

  385. Not necessarily.

  386. I think

  387. wherever God

  388. has placed you,

  389. whatever job you have,

  390. that's where the Lord

  391. is leading you.

  392. Somebody has put it this way

  393. and I love this.

  394. If we want to follow Jesus,

  395. we have to follow Him

  396. to the ends of the earth.

  397. For that

  398. is where He is going.

  399. Now for me,

  400. that was Peru.

  401. For some of you,

  402. that's here.

  403. Some have come

  404. from other places

  405. to here.

  406. It might seem like

  407. the end of the earth

  408. to you folks

  409. who have come

  410. from other places.

  411. But this is the end

  412. of the earth for you

  413. because this is where

  414. Jesus has brought you.

  415. And where the Lord

  416. took me

  417. was to another country.

  418. And it doesn't matter

  419. whether you're here,

  420. Belfast,

  421. Orkney,

  422. or the United States,

  423. or Africa,

  424. any place in the world.

  425. That's where the Lord

  426. is leading you and me.

  427. And I thank God

  428. for how He's led me

  429. in my life

  430. and for what I've been

  431. able to do.

  432. You know,

  433. things have changed

  434. in the world.

  435. You've probably noticed this.

  436. In the past,

  437. most missionaries

  438. were from the West.

  439. True?

  440. Yesterday,

  441. I noticed that

  442. the country that sends out

  443. most missionaries today,

  444. did anybody notice?

  445. Huh?

  446. Was it China?

  447. China's sending out a lot.

  448. You're almost right.

  449. It surprised me.

  450. Yeah.

  451. Say that.

  452. I think it was Mongolia

  453. or Moldova.

  454. It was one of those

  455. weird countries.

  456. Brazil sends out a lot.

  457. China sends out a lot.

  458. China wants to send out

  459. 100,000 missionaries.

  460. Do you know

  461. what's happening?

  462. We naughty Westerners,

  463. I'm talking about we Brits,

  464. and I'm talking about

  465. we Americans,

  466. we're at war

  467. in certain countries.

  468. They don't like us

  469. over there

  470. for some reason.

  471. Don't quite understand that.

  472. I'm being facetious.

  473. But you know

  474. what the Lord's doing?

  475. Chinese people,

  476. I mean real Christians,

  477. are going from China

  478. and they want to send

  479. 100,000 missionaries

  480. from China.

  481. The persecuted church

  482. that has grown

  483. when missionaries

  484. were thrown out of China

  485. back in 1951,

  486. I think it was,

  487. one million Christians.

  488. Do you know now

  489. how many Christians

  490. there are in China?

  491. Some reckon

  492. there might be

  493. 130 million.

  494. That's one in ten Chinese.

  495. Check it out.

  496. Most of the things

  497. we wear are made in China.

  498. One in ten,

  499. probably a Christian

  500. making your shirts

  501. and your trousers

  502. and everything else.

  503. But those guys

  504. are going to other countries

  505. and they're not going

  506. as missionaries,

  507. they're going as Christians.

  508. Because at the end of the day,

  509. to call yourself a missionary

  510. is not very popular

  511. in certain parts of the world.

  512. And they're going.

  513. This is going too.

  514. But they're going.

  515. They're going to work

  516. in these places.

  517. And they're in Afghanistan.

  518. They're in Iraq.

  519. They're in Iran.

  520. And they're talking

  521. about the Lord Jesus Christ.

  522. Isn't the Lord so wise

  523. in what He does?

  524. See,

  525. call them what you like.

  526. Maybe they work

  527. in laboratories.

  528. Who knows?

  529. But they're working

  530. for the Lord.

  531. And in the past,

  532. most missionaries

  533. were from the West.

  534. Not now.

  535. Not now.

  536. More people are coming

  537. from the other countries

  538. and we,

  539. we will

  540. have to receive people

  541. and willingly

  542. and lovingly

  543. receive people

  544. and say,

  545. you guys perhaps

  546. have so much to teach us

  547. from other countries

  548. here in the West.

  549. We won't go down

  550. that route

  551. at the moment.

  552. But there are now

  553. more Christians

  554. in the Southern Hemisphere

  555. and in what used to be called

  556. the Third World

  557. than in the West.

  558. I think that's great.

  559. I think that's great.

  560. I could go down

  561. the line on that.

  562. But in this task

  563. of reconciliation,

  564. I've learned this.

  565. And this might seem

  566. a very, very simple

  567. lesson to learn.

  568. And it's this.

  569. There is no room

  570. for first fiddles,

  571. number ones.

  572. There's only room

  573. in the Lord's work

  574. for number twos.

  575. And I've called us

  576. second fiddles.

  577. I love to go

  578. to the orchestra.

  579. We went at Christmas,

  580. Jeannie and I.

  581. And I'm dreaming

  582. of Jeannie today.

  583. And incidentally,

  584. Jeannie with the light

  585. grey hair,

  586. if you know her.

  587. That's a good

  588. Scottish song.

  589. And we go.

  590. And I'm always enthralled

  591. because in the orchestra,

  592. Handel's Messiah,

  593. you name it,

  594. first fiddle.

  595. The conductor,

  596. he stands up

  597. and he bows forever

  598. and a day at the end

  599. and he gets the applause.

  600. And first fiddle.

  601. Have you noticed that?

  602. And he often goes over

  603. and shakes the hand

  604. of the first fiddle.

  605. That's probably not

  606. the best way to say it.

  607. But the second fiddler

  608. is also playing.

  609. Imagine first fiddle

  610. without second fiddle

  611. and third fiddle

  612. and fourth fiddle.

  613. Where would the orchestra be?

  614. And in the Lord's work,

  615. now you're beginning to think,

  616. Ken's beginning to be

  617. non-biblical.

  618. Well, let me give you

  619. my scripture.

  620. Where about John the Baptist?

  621. That's where I start.

  622. The greatest of all the prophets,

  623. Jesus said.

  624. But what did John say?

  625. Jesus said,

  626. John is the greatest

  627. of all the prophets.

  628. Let Jesus say stuff,

  629. not us.

  630. But John said,

  631. Jesus must increase.

  632. I must decrease.

  633. So when I think about

  634. the practice of mission,

  635. yes,

  636. the ultimate goal of missions

  637. is the glory of God

  638. through the redemption

  639. of people,

  640. redemption of people

  641. for God

  642. through Jesus Christ.

  643. The radio in Peru.

  644. I'm going to show you

  645. something from Baptist missions.

  646. I only have two of these

  647. and I'm going to give them

  648. to you.

  649. I don't know if you have

  650. a notice board.

  651. But I went to a church

  652. in the north.

  653. This is everybody

  654. in Baptist missions.

  655. There aren't many

  656. of these around anymore.

  657. Some of you may have them,

  658. right?

  659. Well,

  660. I went to a church recently

  661. and they had it up.

  662. There I am,

  663. right in the center.

  664. I went to a church

  665. and I said,

  666. huh.

  667. But it was up on the wall.

  668. No,

  669. not really.

  670. That came out wrong.

  671. But it was up on the wall

  672. and we were there,

  673. all the western missionaries.

  674. And I said to them,

  675. have you got another copy?

  676. They said,

  677. no.

  678. I said,

  679. what a pity.

  680. Because if you were to pin

  681. the other side up,

  682. this is Peru.

  683. There are,

  684. look at the Peru bit,

  685. this little corner,

  686. three couples.

  687. Three couples.

  688. And I love these guys,

  689. but they're not doing

  690. all that much

  691. because there's only

  692. three of them.

  693. Three couples.

  694. But look at the front.

  695. Fifteen different units,

  696. all on Baptist,

  697. with Baptist missions,

  698. being paid a pittance,

  699. perhaps.

  700. But they're doing

  701. far more work

  702. than the missionaries

  703. in Peru.

  704. I think that's exciting.

  705. And even in Peru,

  706. the radio,

  707. and it's my baby.

  708. When you do give money,

  709. give it to the radio.

  710. There you go.

  711. Specify the radio.

  712. The Lord bless you.

  713. But there they are,

  714. great team.

  715. They're Peruvians.

  716. You see,

  717. all I could do,

  718. and I'm being quite honest,

  719. all I could do

  720. was set up the radio.

  721. And my ministry

  722. is very simple.

  723. Your ministry

  724. may be very simple,

  725. may be better than mine.

  726. I'm an implementer.

  727. And you know,

  728. when people said to me,

  729. you're setting up a radio.

  730. What do you know about a radio?

  731. Nothing.

  732. But all my life,

  733. I've done stuff.

  734. I've started stuff.

  735. It's just one of the things

  736. I like to do.

  737. It's one of the things

  738. that excites me.

  739. It's why I get bored

  740. and move on

  741. to something else.

  742. People are different.

  743. I'm an implementer.

  744. It's somewhere in the Bible.

  745. I just haven't found it yet.

  746. It's a gift.

  747. Implementation.

  748. But other people come behind.

  749. So in this task

  750. of reconciliation,

  751. I'm learning

  752. and I've learned

  753. over many years

  754. that I need to be number two.

  755. Second fiddle.

  756. Do you believe me?

  757. So how does this apply to me?

  758. How does this apply to you?

  759. Obviously,

  760. everything primarily,

  761. and this is why

  762. it's so important,

  763. is for the glory of God.

  764. But even in the ministry,

  765. often,

  766. there's no room

  767. for number one.

  768. It's only for number twos.

  769. Let me give you

  770. another scripture.

  771. Paul is writing.

  772. 1 Corinthians 15, 9.

  773. Now, let me say something

  774. just before that.

  775. Somebody told me

  776. the other day,

  777. and I love this.

  778. I don't know

  779. where he got it from.

  780. Somebody said

  781. from Charles Hatton Spurgeon.

  782. It takes more grace

  783. than tongue can tell

  784. to play

  785. the second fiddle

  786. well.

  787. I'll repeat that.

  788. It's not a text,

  789. but I think it's biblical.

  790. It takes more grace

  791. than tongue can tell

  792. to play the second fiddle

  793. well.

  794. 1 Corinthians 15, 9.

  795. Paul is writing.

  796. What does he write?

  797. This is Paul,

  798. the Apostle Paul.

  799. I am the least

  800. of the Apostles.

  801. I am the least

  802. of the Apostles

  803. who am not worthy

  804. to be called an Apostle

  805. because I persecuted

  806. the Church of God.

  807. What did he say?

  808. I am number two?

  809. No.

  810. Not even number two.

  811. I am the least.

  812. He met the risen Christ.

  813. And when Paul

  814. met the risen Christ,

  815. he had two questions.

  816. Check it out.

  817. In the Acts of the Apostles,

  818. he met the risen Christ

  819. and he said this,

  820. Who are you, Lord?

  821. And isn't that

  822. the greatest question

  823. we can ever ask?

  824. Lord, who are you?

  825. I want to know you better.

  826. And the other question is,

  827. what do you want me to do?

  828. I don't think you and I

  829. can ask two greater questions

  830. than these two.

  831. Who are you?

  832. And we want to know him better.

  833. And you know,

  834. he spent the rest of his life,

  835. I believe,

  836. answering these two questions.

  837. And if you have questions in life,

  838. I think these are the best questions

  839. we can ever ask

  840. and we can ever answer.

  841. Lord, who are you?

  842. Let me know you better today.

  843. And I meant what I said earlier

  844. and I hadn't pre-planned it

  845. when he said to me,

  846. When did you come to Jesus Christ?

  847. I gave all that I knew

  848. about me to God then.

  849. And I know a lot more

  850. about me now

  851. because the Lord reveals

  852. a whole lot more to me

  853. about me.

  854. And I can give a whole lot more

  855. of me to the Lord now

  856. than I used to.

  857. And I knew Jesus was glorious

  858. and I knew that

  859. he changed my life then.

  860. But I know that he changes

  861. my life more now

  862. because he's more glorious

  863. than I realized

  864. he was when I was 10.

  865. 52 years later,

  866. that's how it is.

  867. Later in life,

  868. what did Paul write?

  869. He's growing.

  870. And I'll tell you

  871. how I know this.

  872. Ephesians 3, 8.

  873. It was written

  874. after 1 Corinthians 15.

  875. Later in life,

  876. Paul grows

  877. and he says this.

  878. He writes this.

  879. To me,

  880. who am less

  881. than the least

  882. of all the saints.

  883. Imagine that.

  884. What do we think

  885. of ourselves

  886. in the church

  887. of Jesus Christ?

  888. Do we think

  889. we're the most important

  890. kingpin?

  891. We can be tempted

  892. to think that.

  893. But he goes on to say,

  894. this grace was given

  895. that I should preach

  896. among the Gentiles

  897. the unsearchable

  898. riches of Christ.

  899. What did Paul say?

  900. Great sainthood?

  901. Great sainthood

  902. is to see yourself

  903. like Paul,

  904. the least of all.

  905. That's a paradox,

  906. isn't it?

  907. Almost a contradiction.

  908. He saw great grace,

  909. he saw the greatness

  910. of the gospel

  911. and he saw that

  912. it was all about Christ,

  913. not about him.

  914. Later in life,

  915. and we know this

  916. because 1 Timothy 1.15

  917. was written

  918. after Ephesians

  919. and after 1 Corinthians.

  920. Just before his death,

  921. following Jesus,

  922. he was growing.

  923. This is growth.

  924. 1 Timothy 1.15.

  925. There are several

  926. faithful sayings

  927. quoted in the

  928. pastoral epistles

  929. and this is one of them.

  930. This is a faithful saying

  931. and worthy of all acceptance

  932. that Christ Jesus

  933. came into the world

  934. to save sinners

  935. of whom

  936. I

  937. am

  938. chief.

  939. Now doesn't that seem

  940. the opposite

  941. of spirituality?

  942. That's descending growth.

  943. What happens

  944. in spirituality

  945. as we come to know

  946. the Lord Jesus

  947. is the exact opposite

  948. of what happens

  949. in the world.

  950. Apostle,

  951. the least.

  952. Saint,

  953. less

  954. than the least

  955. of all the saints.

  956. Was Paul lying?

  957. I don't think so.

  958. I think Paul saw himself

  959. in relation to other Christians

  960. as not that important.

  961. Maybe you don't think

  962. you're that important.

  963. Good

  964. in that sense.

  965. Maybe the Lord

  966. can use you

  967. even more

  968. in that way.

  969. And sinners,

  970. the worst.

  971. Did Paul mean that?

  972. Absolutely.

  973. And isn't that growth?

  974. You know,

  975. when I was younger

  976. I used to think

  977. that the older I would get,

  978. as Johnny says,

  979. near retirement age,

  980. that I would feel

  981. holier.

  982. Ah,

  983. I don't feel

  984. holier

  985. today.

  986. I don't stand

  987. here thinking

  988. I'm a missionary.

  989. I'm holier

  990. than other people.

  991. I'm absolutely

  992. amazed

  993. that the Lord

  994. can use me

  995. and He's still

  996. calling me

  997. to follow Him.

  998. And the older I get,

  999. the more I have to

  1000. confess my sins

  1001. than ever before.

  1002. And into that mix,

  1003. imagine this,

  1004. Paul presented

  1005. the unsearchable

  1006. riches of Jesus.

  1007. That's growth.

  1008. Descending growth.

  1009. The opposite

  1010. of what it is

  1011. in this world.

  1012. How about me?

  1013. How about you?

  1014. In me,

  1015. in you,

  1016. in us,

  1017. there's no room

  1018. for self-importance

  1019. in one sense.

  1020. I go into bookshops

  1021. when I travel

  1022. and if I see

  1023. another self-help book

  1024. I think I'll blow up

  1025. the bookshop.

  1026. Everything is

  1027. self-help,

  1028. self-esteem

  1029. and all that stuff.

  1030. The irony is

  1031. we only

  1032. are esteemed

  1033. finally

  1034. in Jesus Christ

  1035. and the weaker

  1036. we are,

  1037. the stronger

  1038. we are.

  1039. Isn't that strange?

  1040. Paul says,

  1041. did Paul mean this?

  1042. He says,

  1043. I have even

  1044. despaired of life

  1045. itself.

  1046. That's rock bottom.

  1047. And yet,

  1048. he says,

  1049. when I am weak,

  1050. I'm strong.

  1051. And there's no room

  1052. for self-righteousness.

  1053. I've been a Christian

  1054. for 52 years.

  1055. No room.

  1056. No room.

1057. Life is just a vapor.

  1058. Let me tell you,

  1059. it's just gone.

  1060. And on the line,

  1061. my mother

  1062. passed away.

  1063. She was 90.

  1064. And I was talking

1065. to somebody the other day.

  1066. I said,

  1067. I don't particularly

  1068. like to live

  1069. to be 90.

  1070. I said,

  1071. but the alternative,

  1072. I'm not too attracted

  1073. to that either.

  1074. You know,

  1075. life is just flying.

  1076. And that's good.

1077. We'll be in heaven soon.

  1078. But meanwhile,

  1079. I don't know about you.

  1080. In my life,

  1081. and I mean this,

1082. I do a lot of repentance now.

  1083. If I say something

  1084. I shouldn't say,

  1085. I think,

  1086. that's not nice.

  1087. If the Lord speaks

  1088. to my heart,

  1089. I just know that I have

1090. to be right with God.

  1091. And it's a daily thing,

  1092. isn't it?

1093. And I notice that people

  1094. who are like myself

  1095. at this age

  1096. are nodding their heads.

1097. You know what I mean?

  1098. It's what happens

  1099. when we grow

  1100. and go on.

  1101. A lot of repentance.

  1102. But,

1103. the other side to that is,

  1104. the beautiful paradox is,

  1105. we see more

  1106. of the unsearchable

  1107. riches of Christ

1108. than we've ever seen before.

  1109. Isn't that true?

  1110. Back to Baptist missions

  1111. for a moment.

  1112. Three couples in Peru.

  1113. I think that's great.

  1114. 13,

  1115. 15 Peruvian units

  1116. on the Peru.

  1117. I think that's wonderful.

1118. And to serve the Lord

1119. on the foreign mission field

  1120. doesn't mean

  1121. you're a number one kingpin.

1122. How people can put you

  1123. up on a pedestal

  1124. it's not like that.

  1125. They're just so important.

  1126. These guys working away

  1127. in Peru.

  1128. Peruvians that I love.

1129. I'm going back in June

  1130. and July

  1131. and I'm looking forward

  1132. to that.

  1133. And when Peru gets

  1134. into your blood

  1135. it's in there.

  1136. You're going back

  1137. on your honeymoon,

  1138. are you?

  1139. Tom?

  1140. Oops.

  1141. There we go.

  1142. We're all number twos,

  1143. aren't we?

  1144. Partners.

  1145. ordinary people.

  1146. And God calls us

  1147. to be second fiddles.

1148. I think that balances out

  1149. beautifully

  1150. every church.

  1151. Don't you?

1152. And the glory is His.

  1153. You see,

  1154. we're on a faith adventure.

  1155. The other night

  1156. Elizabeth Almanza,

  1157. you know her Tom,

  1158. phoned.

  1159. It was so encouraging.

  1160. She,

1161. if you know the Bible college

  1162. in the north,

  1163. we have Valerie

  1164. who works in the,

  1165. she keeps us

  1166. six lecturers straight

  1167. in Peru.

  1168. It's Elizabeth Almanza.

  1169. And she said,

  1170. Ken,

  1171. it's great.

  1172. We're meeting for prayer

  1173. every morning

  1174. and we're praying.

  1175. The pastor's wives

  1176. are meeting for prayer.

  1177. We're having an evangelistic

  1178. campaign.

  1179. And she told me

  1180. all kinds of things

  1181. and I thought,

  1182. wow.

  1183. I didn't know

  1184. all these things

  1185. were going on.

1186. And there are the guys

  1187. working in the mission,

  1188. the Peruvians.

  1189. I was so excited.

1190. I want to encourage you today.

  1191. I don't want to send you

  1192. on a guilt trip.

  1193. I really don't.

1194. I want you to think

  1195. about the weekend.

  1196. Fine.

1197. I want you to process it.

  1198. I don't want you

1199. to try and do everything

  1200. for every mission

  1201. and every field

  1202. in the world.

  1203. You can't.

  1204. But I want you

  1205. to think it through.

  1206. But be encouraged.

  1207. The primary motivation

  1208. for what you do

  1209. and for your life

  1210. and my life

1211. is the glory of God.

1212. And He has a whole lot

  1213. more glory

  1214. in your life

  1215. and my life

1216. than you might even think.

  1217. I believe that.

  1218. So don't give up.

  1219. Don't give up.

1220. This is for the glory of God.

  1221. Secondly,

  1222. the secondary motivation,

  1223. the ministry of reconciliation.

  1224. It's a process.

  1225. That's the challenge.

  1226. Think about it.

  1227. Think about the practice.

1228. Feel it in your heart.

  1229. Be motivated

  1230. and take that responsibility

  1231. to heart.

  1232. Recession in the South.

  1233. I wasn't going to say this

  1234. but I came across

  1235. this little quote

  1236. the other day.

1237. Some folk are looking for jobs.

1238. You think you don't have money.

  1239. But you know,

  1240. I found this

  1241. and I've worked with

1242. poor people in the world

1243. and they're some of the best people

1244. I've ever met in my life.

  1245. I'm not against wealth.

  1246. I've met wealthy people

  1247. and some of them

  1248. are the best people

  1249. in the world.

  1250. But giving

  1251. is not giving

  1252. of any kind

  1253. until

  1254. it interrupts

  1255. our lifestyle.

1256. People talk about a tenth.

  1257. The Bible

  1258. in the New Testament

  1259. doesn't mention the tenth.

1260. Have you ever wondered about that?

1261. It talks about generous giving.

  1262. I'm just leaving you

  1263. with that one.

  1264. Maybe that's

1265. where you have to plug in.

  1266. I can't afford to.

  1267. Hey,

  1268. giving is not giving

  1269. until it interrupts

  1270. our lifestyles.

  1271. Without bleeding

  1272. the church

  1273. fails to bless.

  1274. Let's pray.

  1275. Father,

  1276. we thank you

  1277. our God and Father

1278. that you are a missionary God.

  1279. Thank you

  1280. that the Bible

  1281. is a missionary book.

  1282. Father,

  1283. we thank you

  1284. that the gospel

  1285. is a missionary message.

  1286. It's to be shared.

  1287. It's good news.

  1288. And Father,

  1289. we thank you

  1290. that your church

  1291. is a missionary institution.

  1292. Here in Carragalline,

  1293. this church,

  1294. us,

  1295. these people

  1296. are missionary people.

  1297. Help us,

  1298. Father,

1299. always to be missionary minded

1300. so that we do not deny

  1301. the faith

  1302. entrusted to us

  1303. nor betray your trust

1304. in not passing it on.

  1305. We know you.

  1306. We love you.

  1307. And we know

  1308. it's wonderful

  1309. to know you.

  1310. Father,

1311. we go through many struggles

  1312. and we know that.

  1313. Sometimes we even doubt

1314. and you take us through.

  1315. And Father,

  1316. we thank you today

  1317. that the ultimate goal

  1318. of preaching the gospel,

  1319. of sharing you,

  1320. is your glory.

  1321. And Father,

  1322. we worship you

1323. that you have given us

  1324. this wonderful ministry

  1325. of reconciling

  1326. this world to yourself.

  1327. And Father,

  1328. we bless you

1329. that we enter into mission

  1330. because Jesus Christ

  1331. is present

  1332. in the form

  1333. of the Holy Spirit

  1334. here among us.

1335. And he gives us power.

  1336. Power to go,

  1337. but power to be.

  1338. And that we're involved

1339. as members of the church.

  1340. The body of Christ.

  1341. And Father,

  1342. we thank you

  1343. for that wonderful text

1344. that when we implore people,

1345. we do so on Christ's behalf

1346. to come back to God,

1347. to be reconciled to God.

  1348. It's just as though

  1349. you make your appeal

  1350. through us.

  1351. And Father,

  1352. we thank you

  1353. that you've called us

  1354. to do that

  1355. simply,

  1356. daily,

  1357. when you give us

  1358. the opportunities,

  1359. not artificially.

  1360. artificially.

  1361. And thank you,

  1362. Father,

  1363. for we know

  1364. that in this lies

  1365. the only possibility

  1366. of forgiveness

1367. and of a new relationship

  1368. with God

  1369. for many people

  1370. and for all

1371. who will come to you

  1372. to worship you

1373. in spirit and in truth,

  1374. loving you

  1375. with all our hearts

1376. and with all their hearts,

  1377. souls,

  1378. minds,

  1379. and strength.

  1380. And Father,

  1381. in this we rejoice

  1382. in Jesus Christ,

  1383. our Lord.

  1384. Amen.

  1385. Blessings on you.
