  1. Romans chapter 6 verse 15.

    Romans 6:15

  2. What then? Shall we sin because we are not under law but under grace? By no means.

  3. Don't you know that when you offer yourselves to someone to obey him as slaves, you are slaves to the one whom you obey,

  4. whether you are slaves to sin, which leads to death, or to obedience, which leads to righteousness.

  5. But thanks be to God that though you used to be slaves to sin, you wholeheartedly obeyed the form of teaching to which you were entrusted.

  6. You have been set free from sin and have become slaves to righteousness.

  7. I put this in human terms because you are weak in your natural selves,

  8. just as you used to offer the parts of your body in slavery to impurity and to ever-increasing wickedness.

  9. So now offer them in slavery to righteousness, leading to holiness.

  10. When you are slaves to sin, you are free from the control of righteousness.

  11. What benefit did you reap at that time from the things you are now ashamed of?

  12. Those things result in death.

  13. But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves to God,

  14. the benefit you reap leads to holiness, and the result is eternal life.

  15. For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

  16. Thank you, Peter.

  17. Well, please keep your Bibles open.

  18. If you haven't got a Bible, I encourage you to get one.

  19. There's one at the back.

  20. And you can follow along and make sure that everything that we're saying and talking about does come from God's Word.

  21. That's most important.

  22. We don't want to be hearing my thoughts or ideas, but what God has to say.

  23. There's also a sheet.

  24. There's one left if anybody wants it.

  25. Take notes.

  26. Feel free to come up and get it.

  27. I'll leave it here.

  28. It won't burn.

  29. Well, let's pray together.

  30. Our Father, thank you for your goodness to us.

  31. Thank you for your Word.

  32. Thank you for this book of Romans that we have been able to study and look at together.

  33. We pray that what we read and think through now would be words from you that change us,

  34. words that bring life, words that shape how we live and how we should serve.

  35. We pray that we would be encouraged through this morning,

  36. that you would challenge us where we need to be challenged,

  37. and that we would put right in our lives the areas that need to be put right.

  38. But we want to do all of this under your grace.

  39. not our performance,

  40. but recognizing that all this is only possible because of what Jesus has done for us.

  41. So please help us.

  42. In Jesus' name.

  43. Amen.

  44. Well, I have a new rule for everyone.

  45. From now on,

  46. there's only going to be one rule.

  47. And here's the rule.

  48. You ready?

  49. There are no rules.

  50. Do you like that?

  51. Because that's exactly what I said.

  52. From now on,

  53. we're not going to have any more rules.

  54. Do you remember that list Joy was talking about at the beginning?

  55. About rotas for helping out and serving?

  56. Tear it up.

  57. No more rules.

  58. But you say,

  59. how can we do that?

  60. If there were no more rules,

  61. we would descend into absolute chaos.

  62. People would do whatever they wanted.

  63. They would arrive whenever they wanted,

  64. which people do anyway.

  65. We need rules to keep us right.

  66. We need to make sure that we do the right thing.

  67. No more rules.

  68. That would be absolute madness.

  69. It would seem very strange, wouldn't it,

  70. for somebody to say,

  71. there are no more rules.

  72. But that's exactly what Paul seems to be saying to the church

  73. and to us.

  74. Look at verse 14 of chapter 6.

  75. He says,

  76. sin shall not be your master

  77. because you are not under law

  78. but under grace.

  79. It's very clear, isn't it?

  80. No more rules.

  81. We're not under law.

  82. We're under grace.

  83. Verse 15.

  84. What then?

  85. Shall we sin because we are not under law

  86. but under grace?

  87. You could imagine them reading this

  88. and thinking to themselves,

  89. has Paul gone mad?

  90. Has this gospel thing gone to his head?

  91. How can you say,

  92. we are not under law but under grace?

  93. If we're under grace,

  94. that means we can do whatever we like

  95. and God is going to forgive us.

  96. Look at the rest of verse 15.

  97. By no means.

  98. No, he says,

  99. that's not what I am saying.

  100. I do say,

  101. there are no more rules

  102. but that does not mean

  103. we can live however we want.

  104. If you are a Christian,

  105. if you are somebody who trusts in Jesus,

  106. you live under the rule of grace

  107. and that radically changes

  108. your whole life

  109. and as we will see,

  110. it radically changes

  111. your whole attitude to serving.

  112. You see,

  113. there were those in this church

  114. that are being written to

  115. who were concerned about right behaviour

  116. and I think we're all kinds of people

  117. who are concerned about right behaviour.

  118. that things are done well.

  119. And in this church,

  120. there were two groups of people.

  121. You had the Jews

  122. who were from a religious background

  123. and they were concerned

  124. about the Gentiles.

  125. They were people

  126. who were from a non-religious background

  127. and they were concerned

  128. that they would take this grace thing

  129. too far.

  130. In other words,

  131. a licence to sin.

  132. Those people,

  133. they'll just behave

  134. however they want.

  135. They'll say,

  136. God will forgive us.

  137. It doesn't matter what time we come.

  138. It doesn't matter what we do.

  139. God will forgive us.

  140. So the way in which

  141. to keep order in their church

  142. was to slap on lots of rules.

  143. Let's have lots of rules

  144. and everybody will keep things right.

  145. But as he explained

  146. back in chapter 5 verse 20,

  147. have a look at 5 verse 20,

  148. he said the law,

  149. talking about the law of Moses,

  150. the first five books,

  151. was added

  152. so that the trespass

  153. might increase.

  154. Now the principle

  155. was very clear.

  156. Rules or law

  157. only tell you

  158. what the right thing is.

  159. They can't make you

  160. do the right thing.

  161. Laws and rules

  162. have no power.

  163. The only power they have

  164. is to punish you.

  165. They can't free you.

  166. They can't make you

  167. do the right thing.

  168. No, he's saying,

  169. rules are no good.

  170. We must live under grace.

  171. And by teaching them

  172. all about grace,

  173. he is bringing

  174. these two dividing groups together.

  175. He's getting the religious bunch

  176. on the one hand

  177. who want to control grace

  178. and say,

  179. let's not dish out

  180. too much grace here.

  181. And then he's wanting

  182. to bring the other group,

  183. the non-religious group

  184. who seem to be abusing grace

  185. and doing whatever they want.

  186. And he brings them together

  187. and he says,

  188. I want you to live under grace.

  189. You will have a different

  190. kind of life

  191. under grace.

  192. You will no longer

  193. be serving self,

  194. your own needs

  195. and your own wants.

  196. Instead,

  197. in grateful response

  198. to God's amazing salvation,

  199. you will serve God

  200. and you will serve each other

  201. and you will serve

  202. your church well

  203. because of the grace

  204. you have received.

  205. We could change

  206. what I said at the beginning

  207. a little bit.

  208. There's only one rule

  209. and it's the rule of grace.

  210. Because if we live under grace,

  211. we won't need rules,

  212. we won't need rotas,

  213. we won't need anything like that

  214. because

  215. our lives will be

  216. so radically changed,

  217. we will be serving

  218. in ways we never thought possible.

  219. That, I think,

  220. is what Paul is going

  221. to be getting to

  222. at the rest of chapter 6.

  223. So let's unpack this

  224. a little bit more,

  225. this whole idea

  226. of grace

  227. enabling us to serve.

  228. The first thing

  229. we want to notice

  230. is that everyone

  231. serves someone.

  232. Every one of us here

  233. serves someone.

  234. Look at verse 16.

  235. Don't you know

  236. that when you offer yourselves

  237. to someone

  238. to obey him as slaves,

  239. you are slaves

  240. to the one

  241. whom you obey.

  242. Whether you are slaves

  243. to sin,

  244. which leads to death,

  245. or slaves to obedience,

  246. which leads to righteousness.

  247. You see,

  248. we all serve

  249. somebody.

  250. And the way

  251. to find out

  252. who it is

  253. that we're serving

  254. is by asking,

  255. who do I obey?

  256. Because if we look closely

  257. at verse 16,

  258. it says,

  259. you are slaves

  260. to the one

  261. that you obey.

  262. So that's a good question

  263. for us all to ask.

  264. Who do we obey?

  265. Well,

  266. it seems like

  267. we have two choices.

  268. In verse 16,

  269. we are either

  270. slaves to sin.

  271. In other words,

  272. we obey self.

  273. We obey what I want.

  274. Or,

  275. we are slaves

  276. to obedience.

  277. That's slaves to Christ.

  278. In other words,

  279. we obey God.

  280. What he wants.

  281. And because we're all here

  282. in church together

  283. this morning,

  284. and we've got our Bibles open,

  285. we'd all like to think

  286. we're in the second category,

  287. that we obey God.

  288. But look at verse 20.

  289. He says,

  290. when you were slaves

  291. to sin,

  292. you were free

  293. from the control

  294. or the restraint

  295. of righteousness.

  296. Yes,

  297. he said,

  298. you did have a freedom,

  299. but it was only

  300. a freedom

  301. to obey self.

  302. You couldn't

  303. obey righteousness.

  304. Let me explain it.

  305. It's a little bit

  306. like addictions.

  307. Addicts

  308. don't want

  309. to be

  310. addicts.

  311. They want to be able

  312. to break free

  313. from its control

  314. and break free

  315. from its hold

  316. in their lives.

  317. And addicts

  318. are free

  319. to make that choice

  320. every single day.

  321. but they still

  322. obey

  323. their body's

  324. cravings.

  325. And in the same way,

  326. it's saying

  327. without Christ,

  328. we are addicts

  329. to obey

  330. what we want,

  331. not what God wants.

  332. We obey

  333. our cravings.

  334. We obey

  335. what our desires are,

  336. not God's desires.

  337. sinners.

  338. So back to verse 16,

  339. if we are given

  340. the choice,

  341. will you obey God

  342. or will you obey

  343. self?

  344. Well,

  345. self wins

  346. every single time.

  347. In fact,

  348. the painful truth is,

  349. without Christ,

  350. we don't have a choice

  351. to do what is right.

  352. We are natural born

  353. sinners.

  354. We can't help

  355. but do the wrong thing.

  356. That's who we are.

  357. That is our nature.

  358. And when we're talking

  359. about sin,

  360. let's not just think

  361. about breaking rules,

  362. things we don't do

  363. or things we should do.

  364. It's a lifestyle.

  365. Sin is a lifestyle.

  366. It's our nature.

  367. It's a life

  368. that desperately

  369. tries to live

  370. outside of God.

  371. In other words,

  372. we are always living

  373. to serve our own needs

  374. and our own wants.

  375. Rather than obey God

  376. who gives us

  377. everything that we need,

  378. we will obey

  379. anything

  380. and anyone

  381. that gives us

  382. what we want.

  383. So,

  384. if I wanted

  385. to have sex

  386. with someone else,

  387. I would have an affair.

  388. I would obey

  389. that hunger

  390. inside of me.

  391. If I want a job,

  392. I will tell lies

  393. in my CV

  394. and I'll write down

  395. anything I want to

  396. because I obey

  397. the desire

  398. that's in me.

  399. If I want

  400. more control

  401. over somebody

  402. or over a situation,

  403. then I will begin

  404. to bully

  405. because I obey me.

  406. It's something

  407. that I want.

  408. It's something

  409. that I desire

  410. and I will do

  411. anything to get it.

  412. So,

  413. sin is always

  414. living outside of God.

  415. That's the way

  416. it expresses itself.

  417. It's a life

  418. that serves me.

  419. It puts me

  420. at the center

  421. rather than God.

  422. God.

  423. Or as one writer

  424. put it like this,

  425. we de-God

  426. God.

  427. We take away

  428. God's right

  429. and we give it

  430. to ourselves

  431. and say,

  432. you choose

  433. what you want

  434. to do.

  435. But the seriousness

  436. of that problem

  437. is that we

  438. cannot help

  439. but serve

  440. me

  441. all of the time.

  442. So,

  443. we all serve

  444. someone

  445. and the truth

  446. is we serve

  447. ourselves.

  448. but thankfully

  449. we can be set

  450. free from that

  451. kind of lifestyle.

  452. We can be set

  453. free to serve

  454. God

  455. and it's grace

  456. that sets us

  457. free.

  458. Look at verse 17.

  459. Thanks be to God

  460. that though you

  461. used to be

  462. slaves to sin,

  463. you wholeheartedly

  464. obeyed the form

  465. of teaching

  466. to which you

  467. were entrusted.

  468. You have been

  469. set free

  470. from sin.

  471. Now that's

  472. good news

  473. because it's

  474. telling us

  475. that we've

  476. been changed

  477. from one kind

  478. of lifestyle

  479. to another

  480. kind of lifestyle.

  481. From serving

  482. self

  483. to serving

  484. others

  485. and to

  486. serving God.

  487. Well,

  488. how does that

  489. change happen?

  490. Well,

  491. there's two ways

  492. this happens.

  493. First,

  494. it's through

  495. obeying the

  496. gospel.

  497. Look at what

  498. it says there

  499. in verse 17.

  500. It says,

  501. you wholeheartedly

  502. obeyed the

  503. form of

  504. teaching.

  505. Now that's a

  506. funny way of

  507. putting that.

  508. The form of

  509. teaching

  510. is saying

  511. it's the

  512. gospel.

  513. That's what

  514. the form of

  515. teaching was

  516. that they had

  517. been taught.

  518. And in

  519. particular,

  520. it is the

  521. good news

  522. that he has

  523. begun explaining

  524. all the way

  525. through Romans

  526. that Jesus

  527. has put us

  528. right with

  529. God.

  530. He's changed

  531. our life

  532. around.

  533. The author

  534. John Stott

  535. explains it

  536. well.

  537. There's a

  538. quote up

  539. behind me.

  540. Just follow

  541. it as I

  542. read about

  543. the way in

  544. which God

  545. puts us

  546. right.

  547. This is a

  548. summary of

  549. the gospel.

  550. Justification

  551. is a legal

  552. term borrowed

  553. from the

  554. law courts.

  555. It is the

  556. exact opposite

  557. of condemnation.

  558. To condemn

  559. is to

  560. declare someone

  561. guilty.

  562. To justify

  563. is to

  564. declare him

  565. righteous

  566. or put

  567. right with

  568. God.

  569. In the

  570. Bible,

  571. it refers

  572. to God's

  573. act of

  574. unmerited

  575. favour,

  576. his grace,

  577. by which

  578. he puts

  579. the sinner

  580. right with

  581. himself,

  582. not only

  583. pardoning or

  584. acquitting him,

  585. but accepting

  586. him and

  587. treating him

  588. as righteous.

  589. That is the

  590. form of

  591. teaching.

  592. That is the

  593. gospel.

  594. Jesus was

  595. treated as

  596. I deserve

  597. to be

  598. treated

  599. so that

  600. I can be

  601. treated

  602. as Jesus

  603. deserves to

  604. be treated.

  605. And if we

  606. obey this

  607. gospel,

  608. if we put

  609. our faith

  610. and trust

  611. in this,

  612. we are

  613. saying,

  614. I can't

  615. help but

  616. be a

  617. sinner,

  618. and I

  619. need Jesus

  620. to change

  621. me.

  622. And this

  623. is what

  624. sets us

  625. free.

  626. This is what

  627. changes us

  628. from being

  629. so self

  630. centred

  631. to being

  632. God

  633. centred.

  634. But there's

  635. a second

  636. part to

  637. how this

  638. change

  639. comes about,

  640. how this

  641. freedom

  642. comes.

  643. Look at

  644. what it

  645. says there.

  646. It says

  647. this form

  648. of teaching

  649. to which

  650. you were

  651. entrusted.

  652. Now if

  653. you are

  654. entrusted

  655. to something,

  656. that means

  657. you are

  658. under its

  659. care or

  660. protection.

  661. If you

  662. bring your

  663. child to a

  664. creche or

  665. to a

  666. school,

  667. you are

  668. placing

  669. your

  670. child or

  671. entrusting

  672. them to

  673. their care

  674. or protection.

  675. And that's

  676. exactly what

  677. it is for

  678. those who

  679. have obeyed

  680. the gospel.

  681. We are

  682. put under

  683. the care

  684. and under

  685. the supervision

  686. of the

  687. gospel.

  688. That means

  689. we can

  690. never be

  691. taken back

  692. by the

  693. rule of

  694. sin.

  695. Nobody

  696. can come

  697. in and

  698. take us

  699. away.

  700. We have

  701. been set

  702. free and

  703. are now

  704. under the

  705. gospel's

  706. care,

  707. never to

  708. be condemned

  709. but always

  710. accepted and

  711. always treated

  712. as righteous

  713. no matter

  714. what we've

  715. done.

  716. And maybe

  717. you're sitting

  718. here this

  719. morning and

  720. you're thinking

  721. what I did

  722. this week or

  723. what I've been

  724. thinking this

  725. morning is

  726. so outside

  727. of God.

  728. But yet if

  729. we are trusting

  730. in Jesus,

  731. we are entrusted

  732. under his

  733. care,

  734. under his

  735. protection,

  736. never to be

  737. condemned

  738. but always

  739. accepted and

  740. treated as

  741. righteous.

  742. So we

  743. have been

  744. set free

  745. by grace

  746. to live a

  747. different way.

  748. Not to do

  749. like what we

  750. want to do

  751. but to live

  752. a different

  753. way,

  754. to live a

  755. life of

  756. service because

  757. grace sets

  758. us free to

  759. serve.

  760. Look at the

  761. rest of verse

  762. 18.

  763. Well we'll

  764. read all of

  765. verse 18

  766. into 19.

  767. You have

  768. been set

  769. free from

  770. sin,

  771. so that's

  772. the old

  773. way,

  774. and have

  775. now become

  776. slaves to

  777. righteousness.

  778. I put this

  779. in human

  780. terms or I

  781. use a human

  782. illustration

  783. because you're

  784. weak in your

  785. natural selves.

  786. He's being a

  787. little bit rude

  788. there isn't he?

  789. He's saying

  790. you're a bit

  791. thick, you

  792. can't get it

  793. so I'm going

  794. to use a

  795. little illustration

  796. to help

  797. you.

  798. Now we

  799. probably

  800. struggle with

  801. this word

  802. here of

  803. slaves because

  804. nobody wants

  805. to be a

  806. slave.

  807. Slavery was

  808. cruel,

  809. slavery was

  810. abolished many

  811. years ago.

  812. It breaks

  813. people and

  814. destroys

  815. people.

  816. So why is

  817. he using it?

  818. Well he's

  819. using it here

  820. to help us

  821. to understand

  822. our new

  823. purpose in

  824. life.

  825. And that's

  826. why he puts

  827. it in a

  828. strange way

  829. in verse

  830. 19.

  831. He says I

  832. use this

  833. in human

  834. terms because

  835. you're weak

  836. in your

  837. natural

  838. selves.

  839. I want to

  840. use this

  841. illustration

  842. of slavery

  843. to help

  844. you grasp

  845. our freedom.

  846. It sounds

  847. a contradiction

  848. but I want

  849. you to

  850. grasp this.

  851. He says

  852. before you

  853. were under

  854. the control

  855. of sin.

  856. He was

  857. our master

  858. and we

  859. were his

  860. slaves.

  861. We just

  862. obeyed it.

  863. We had

  864. no way

  865. about it.

  866. But now

  867. he says

  868. you've been

  869. set free.

  870. You're under

  871. the control

  872. of grace.

  873. God is

  874. your master

  875. and now

  876. you're his

  877. slaves.

  878. But these

  879. slaveries

  880. are completely

  881. opposite.

  882. The way

  883. in which

  884. we serve

  885. is completely

  886. different.

  887. these ways

  888. are contrasted

  889. in verse

  890. 19.

  891. First,

  892. slavery to

  893. sin

  894. is a

  895. downward

  896. spiral

  897. into

  898. chaos.

  899. If you

  900. were to

  901. serve

  902. self,

  903. if that's

  904. your option,

  905. well,

  906. it's just

  907. going to

  908. end in

  909. chaos.

  910. Look at

  911. verse 19.

  912. He says,

  913. just as

  914. you used

  915. to offer

  916. the parts

  917. of your

  918. body,

  919. your life

  920. in slavery

  921. to impurity

  922. and to

  923. ever

  924. increasing

  925. wickedness.

  926. It's a

  927. downward

  928. spiral.

  929. When I

  930. was at

  931. school,

  932. we were

  933. always given

  934. a packed

  935. lunch,

  936. sandwiches,

  937. which I

  938. never really

  939. liked.

  940. And I

  941. had to

  942. eat them.

  943. That was

  944. the rule.

  945. Except for

  946. I came

  947. home one

  948. day with

  949. the

  950. sandwiches

  951. in my

  952. box and

  953. I didn't

  954. want to

  955. get into

  956. trouble so

  957. I threw

  958. them in

  959. the garden.

  960. And I

  961. was asked

  962. when I

  963. came in,

  964. as mum

  965. looked at

  966. the empty

  967. lunchbox,

  968. did you

  969. eat your

  970. sandwiches?

  971. Yes.

  972. Sat down,

  973. had dinner

  974. that night

  975. and in

  976. came the

  977. dog.

  978. And he

  979. dropped a

  980. sandwich in

  981. the kitchen

  982. floor.

  983. Are these

  984. your

  985. sandwiches?

  986. No.

  987. they are

  988. your

  989. sandwiches,

  990. aren't

  991. they?

  992. Yes,

  993. they are.

  994. Yes,

  995. yes.

  996. When did

  997. you put

  998. them there?

  999. Oh,

  1000. I can't

  1001. remember.

  1002. Ages

  1003. ago.

  1004. Jonathan,

  1005. they're

  1006. still

  1007. fresh.

  1008. I'd

  1009. been caught

  1010. rotten,

  1011. hadn't I?

  1012. But that's

  1013. the point

  1014. here.

  1015. That sin

  1016. always leads

  1017. to more

  1018. sin.

  1019. Ever

  1020. increasing

  1021. wickedness.

  1022. just a

  1023. downward

  1024. spiral.

  1025. The little

  1026. tiny mess

  1027. of just

  1028. throwing a

  1029. little

  1030. sandwich

  1031. away

  1032. ended up

  1033. to being

  1034. grounded

  1035. and a

  1036. big mess

  1037. for me.

  1038. But that's

  1039. just a

  1040. tiny little

  1041. picture of

  1042. the choices

  1043. that we

  1044. make in

  1045. our lives.

  1046. Tiny

  1047. little sins,

  1048. tiny little

  1049. choices that

  1050. people make,

  1051. obeying

  1052. self,

  1053. wanting to

  1054. please

  1055. themselves,

  1056. it destroys

  1057. their lives

  1058. and it

  1059. begins to

  1060. destroy

  1061. others.

  1062. Ever

  1063. increasing

  1064. wickedness.

  1065. Slavery

  1066. to sin.

  1067. It is

  1068. slavery.

  1069. It isn't

  1070. a freedom.

  1071. It's a

  1072. downward

  1073. spiral

  1074. into

  1075. chaos.

  1076. But grace

  1077. saves us

  1078. from all

  1079. of that.

  1080. It gives

  1081. us a

  1082. new way

  1083. to serve.

  1084. Slavery

  1085. to God

  1086. is a

  1087. growing

  1088. spiral

  1089. into

  1090. holiness.

  1091. Look

  1092. at the

  1093. rest of

  1094. verse

  1095. 19.

  1096. He

  1097. says,

  1098. so now

  1099. offer

  1100. your body,

  1101. offer

  1102. yourselves

  1103. in

  1104. slavery

  1105. to

  1106. righteousness

  1107. which

  1108. leads

  1109. to

  1110. holiness.

  1111. As we

  1112. give

  1113. ourselves

  1114. now to

  1115. God

  1116. because

  1117. we're

  1118. able

  1119. to,

  1120. we

  1121. become

  1122. more

  1123. like

  1124. Christ.

  1125. His

  1126. character

  1127. becomes

  1128. like

  1129. our

  1130. character.

  1131. Slowly

  1132. we

  1133. begin

  1134. to be

  1135. transformed

  1136. where

  1137. we

  1138. no

  1139. longer

  1140. want

  1141. to

  1142. serve

  1143. self

  1144. but

  1145. we

  1146. want

  1147. to

  1148. serve

  1149. God.

  1150. And this

  1151. is the

  1152. amazing

  1153. transformation

  1154. that the

  1155. gospel

  1156. brings

  1157. into

  1158. our

  1159. lives.

  1160. Once

  1161. we

  1162. had

  1163. no

  1164. choice

  1165. but

  1166. now

  1167. we

  1168. have

  1169. a

  1170. brand

  1171. new

  1172. freedom

  1173. to

  1174. give

  1175. ourselves

  1176. completely

  1177. to

  1178. God.

  1179. But

  1180. let's

  1181. not

  1182. misunderstand

  1183. this

  1184. slavery

  1185. to

  1186. God.

  1187. God

  1188. is not

  1189. a cruel

  1190. dictator

  1191. who

  1192. orders

  1193. us

  1194. around

  1195. as an

  1196. exercise

  1197. of his

  1198. power

  1199. just to

  1200. show

  1201. how

  1202. strong

  1203. he

  1204. is.

  1205. He's

  1206. not

  1207. a

  1208. tyrant

  1209. who

  1210. waves

  1211. a

  1212. big

  1213. stick

  1214. at

  1215. us

  1216. in

  1217. temper.

  1218. No

  1219. he

  1220. is

  1221. the

  1222. loving

  1223. God

  1224. you

  1225. remember

  1226. who

  1227. came

  1228. to

  1229. serve

  1230. us

  1231. who

  1232. gave

  1233. his

  1234. life

  1235. for

  1236. us

  1237. who

  1238. would

  1239. die

  1240. for

  1241. us

  1242. that

  1243. is

  1244. the

  1245. kind

  1246. of

  1247. master

  1248. he

  1249. is

  1250. he

  1251. would

  1252. lay

  1253. down

  1254. his

  1255. life

  1256. for

  1257. us

  1258. he

  1259. gave

  1260. us

  1261. everything

  1262. so

  1263. that

  1264. in

  1265. grateful

  1266. response

  1267. we

  1268. owe

  1269. him

  1270. everything

  1271. that's

  1272. what

  1273. it

  1274. is

  1275. to

  1276. be

  1277. a

  1278. slave

  1279. we

  1280. owe

  1281. him

  1282. everything

  1283. because

  1284. he

  1285. gave

  1286. us

  1287. his

  1288. everything

  1289. so

  1290. we

  1291. have

  1292. been

  1293. given

  1294. a

  1295. brand

  1296. new

  1297. way

  1298. to

  1299. serve

  1300. but

  1301. let's

  1302. face

  1303. it

  1304. we

  1305. all

  1306. know

  1307. that

  1308. this

  1309. is

  1310. extremely

  1311. hard

  1312. it's

  1313. fine

  1314. in

  1315. theory

  1316. it's

  1317. fine

  1318. written

  1319. down

  1320. on

  1321. these

  1322. pages

  1323. and

  1324. talking

  1325. about

  1326. it

  1327. but

  1328. we

  1329. still

  1330. struggle

  1331. every

  1332. single

  1333. day

  1334. to

  1335. make

  1336. the

  1337. right

  1338. choice

  1339. and

  1340. as

  1341. we

  1342. begin

  1343. to

  1344. put

  1345. into

  1346. practice

  1347. this

  1348. whole

  1349. idea

  1350. of

  1351. serving

  1352. on

  1353. a

  1354. Sunday

  1355. morning

  1356. and

  1357. being

  1358. here

  1359. being

  1360. early

  1361. and

  1362. going

  1363. home

  1364. late

  1365. making

  1366. that

  1367. choice

  1368. is

  1369. going

  1370. to

  1371. be

  1372. hard

  1373. and

  1374. difficult

  1375. for

  1376. us

  1377. well

  1378. the

  1379. only

  1380. way

  1381. we're

  1382. going

  1383. to

  1384. make

  1385. the

  1386. right

  1387. choices

  1388. is

  1389. not

  1390. more

  1391. rules

  1392. we

  1393. could

  1394. have

  1395. 10,000

  1396. rules

  1397. up on

  1398. the

  1399. board

  1400. telling

  1401. you

  1402. what

  1403. time

  1404. you

  1405. have

  1406. to

  1407. be

  1408. here

  1409. what

  1410. time

  1411. you

  1412. have

  1413. to

  1414. go

  1415. home

  1416. at

  1417. when

  1418. to

  1419. drink

  1420. your

  1421. tea

  1422. when

  1423. to

  1424. sit

  1425. down

  1426. he

  1427. can

  1428. have

  1429. all

  1430. of

  1431. these

  1432. sorts

  1433. of

  1434. things

  1435. but it's

1436. not going to make anybody do anything

1437. we need to be motivated by grace

  1438. each day

  1439. look at verse 21 to 22

1440. they're written in contrast to each other

1441. in other words he's saying look at what the life of sin brings

1442. and look at what the life of grace brings

1443. look at the benefits and the results of each

1444. verse 21 this is what this is what a life of serving self brings

  1445. verse 21

  1446. what benefit

1447. did you reap at the time from the things that you are now ashamed of

1448. so when you were serving self and it was just going down and down and

  1449. down

1450. what were the benefits of that

  1451. well absolutely nothing

1452. those things result in death

  1453. complete separation from god

  1454. and eternity from him

1455. is that the way you want to live he says

  1456. well here's another way

1457. here's another way to be motivated

  1458. verse 22

1459. but now that you've been set free from sin

1460. and have become slaves to god

  1461. the benefit you reap

  1462. leads to holiness

  1463. and the result

  1464. is eternal life

  1465. complete contrast

1466. if i want my son ethan to do his homework

1467. i can sit him down at the table

1468. i can shout at him and roar at him and tell him to hurry up

1469. i can give off to him when his sums are wrong

1470. i can tell him he's not doing good enough and he should do better

1471. well the outcome would be absolutely disastrous

1472. the work is never going to get done

1473. it's going to end in tears

1474. he's not going to like his homework

1475. and he's not going to like me either

1476. it'd be an absolute disaster

1477. but if i were to sit down with ethan

1478. and show him what to do

1479. to go through it with him

1480. and then to tell him

  1481. look when we're finished

1482. whether you get it right or wrong

1483. we're going to go to the cinema

1484. now rather than fight homework

1485. he's going to want to do it isn't he

1486. now don't tell him i said that

1487. because i don't want to bring him to the cinema every day

1488. but there's an illustration there isn't it

1489. that in the same way when we look at the benefits

1490. and the results of grace

1491. when we look at what's to come

1492. the result is eternal life

1493. the new heaven and the new earth

1494. we will want to serve god more and more

1495. because of what's to come

1496. we'll want to do it

1497. not as a way of earning these things

1498. but because they belong to us already

  1499. look at verse 22

1500. and look at how it's all past tense

1501. but now that you have been set free

1502. we're not working to set ourselves free

1503. it's past it's been done by jesus

1504. you have become slaves to god

1505. it's not something we have to try and earn or work towards

  1506. it's been done

1507. and now the benefits today

1508. will be christ's likeness holiness

1509. it will be eternal life

1510. you see we need more grace

  1511. not more rules

1512. if we're to serve god well

1513. we need to see everything that god has done for us

1514. all that is ours today

1515. all that is ours to come

1516. and it will change us to be people who serve

1517. so the question we all need to be clear on is this

1518. who are we going to serve

1519. who is going to be the boss of your life

  1520. will it be self

1521. or will it be christ

1522. the outcomes are very different

  1523. verse 23

1524. the wages of sin is death

  1525. the payment

1526. if you live for self

1527. all the work of living for yourself

1528. sin is going to pay you

1529. and he will pay you with death

1530. but the gift of god

1531. if we live to serve christ

  1532. the gift

1533. not because of what we've done

1534. but because of his generosity

  1535. will be eternal life

1536. you see a community of believers

1537. such as us here this morning

1538. if we live under the rule of grace

1539. we will have the lord jesus as our boss

1540. and in response to this liberating grace

1541. we will want to serve him in our lives

  1542. and in the world

  1543. and in our church

1544. and it won't matter whether we're on a rota

1545. for this week or next week

1546. we'll just be serving all the time

  1547. any time

  1548. because it's really true

1549. what we said at the beginning

1550. we are not under grace

  1551. or sorry

  1552. we are under grace

1553. there are no more rules

1554. grace is the only rule

1555. and grace that changes us

1556. will turn lives that turn from self

  1557. to serving god

1558. and serving those around us

1559. may god help us to be a community

1560. who live under his grace

  1561. and his goodness

  1562. let's pray together

  1563. our father god

  1564. we thank you

1565. that you are the great servant

  1566. although you are creator

1567. and lord of this world

1568. you came to serve us

1569. by giving your life for us

  1570. to set us free

1571. from one kind of life

1572. to bring us into another kind of life

  1573. help us to live

  1574. under your grace

  1575. each and every day

  1576. to be generous

  1577. with your grace

  1578. to one another

  1579. forgiving one another

  1580. supporting one another

  1581. caring for one another

1582. help us not to abuse your grace

  1583. or to misunderstand it

  1584. as a license

1585. to do what we want

1586. but may it so transform us

  1587. and change us

1588. that we are the kind of people

  1589. that serve you

  1590. so please help us

  1591. as your people

1592. please help us as a church

1593. we thank you for everybody

  1594. represented here

1595. we thank you for all of their gifts

  1596. and abilities

1597. we thank you for all those

1598. who have served us today

  1599. in setting up

  1600. in tea and coffee

  1601. in welcoming

1602. we thank you for everybody

1603. and for all that they do

1604. and we pray that we would

  1605. encourage each other

  1606. more and more

  1607. to do this well

  1608. in Jesus name

  1609. Amen
