  1. 5, 3, 7 if you're using a red covered Bible.

  2. Starting at verse 1 of chapter 37.

  3. At this my heart pounds and leaps from its place.

  4. Listen, listen to the roar of his voice.

  5. To the rumbling that comes from his mouth.

  6. He unleashes his lightning belief, the whole heaven.

  7. And sends it to the ends of the earth.

  8. After that comes the sound of his roar.

  9. He thunders with his majestic voice.

  10. When his voice resounds, he holds nothing back.

  11. God's voice thunders in marvelous ways.

  12. He does great things beyond our understanding.

  13. He says to the snow, fall on the earth.

  14. And to the rain shower, be a mighty downpour.

  15. So that all people he has made may know his work.

  16. He stops every person from his labor.

  17. The animals take cover.

  18. They remain in their dens.

  19. The tempest comes out from its chamber.

  20. The cold from the driving winds.

  21. The breath of God produces ice.

  22. And the broad waters become frozen.

  23. He loads the clouds with moisture.

  24. He scatters his lightning through them.

  25. At his direction, they swirl around over the face of the whole earth.

  26. To do whatever he commands them.

  27. He brings the clouds to punish men.

  28. Or to water his earth.

  29. And show his love.

  30. Listen to this, Job.

  31. Stop and consider God's wonders.

  32. Do you know how God controls the clouds and makes his lightning flash?

  33. Do you know how the clouds hang poised?

  34. Those wonders of him who is perfect in knowledge.

  35. And our second reading is on page 1158.

  36. Page 1158.

  37. And it's from 2 Corinthians.

    2 Corinthians 1 chapter mention

  38. Chapter 1.

  39. And verses 3 to 11.

  40. So it's on page 1158.

  41. 2 Corinthians chapter 1.

    2 Corinthians 1 chapter mention

  42. Verse 3.

  43. Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

  44. The Father of compassion.

  45. And the God of all comfort.

  46. Who comforts us in all our troubles.

  47. So that we can comfort those in any trouble.

  48. With the comfort we ourselves have received from God.

  49. For just as the sufferings of Christ.

  50. Flow over into our lives.

  51. So also through Christ.

  52. Our comfort overflows.

  53. If we are distressed.

  54. If we are distressed.

  55. It is for your comfort.

  56. And salvation.

  57. Sorry.

  58. If we are comforted.

  59. It is for your comfort.

  60. Which produces in you.

  61. Which produces in you.

  62. Patient endurance of the same sufferings we suffer.

  63. And our hope for you is firm.

  64. Because we know that just as you share in our sufferings.

  65. So also you share in our comfort.

  66. We do not want you to be uninformed brothers.

  67. About the hardships we suffered in the province of Asia.

  68. We were under great pressure.

  69. Far beyond our ability to endure.

  70. So that we despaired even of life.

  71. Indeed in our hearts we felt the sentence of death.

  72. But this happened that we might not rely on ourselves.

  73. But on God who raises the dead.

  74. He has delivered us from such a deadly peril.

  75. And he will deliver us.

  76. On him we have set our hope that he will continue to deliver us.

  77. As you help us by your prayers.

  78. Then many will give thanks on our behalf.

  79. For the gracious favor granted us in answer to the prayers of many.

  80. Thank you Peter.

  81. On Thursday morning.

  82. As I did the school run with our son Ethan.

  83. He turned to me.

  84. It's very foggy this morning dad.

  85. Very difficult to see what's coming.

  86. Was my reply.

  87. Little did we know that within the hour flight.

  88. NM 7100.

  89. From Belfast to Cork.

  90. Would crash in Cork airport.

  91. Due to poor visibility.

  92. A sad and tragic accident.

  93. That has left six families grieving.

  94. As they mourn the loss.

  95. Of family members.

  96. And others who have lost friends and colleagues.

  97. Remarkably.

  98. Six other people survived.

  99. Two of whom would walk away without serious injury.

  100. One of those we've learned this morning was Donal Walsh.

  101. A relay worker with Ifees here in Cork.

  102. And who works closely with Peter.

  103. And I know he's a good friend to many here.

  104. And that's a time like this.

  105. That we begin to ask the question.

  106. Why?

  107. And as the conflicting emotions begin to settle.

  108. On the one hand of joy.

  109. That Donal is safe.

  110. And the other hand sadness.

  111. That many are still grieving.

  112. We can't help think.

  113. What might have been.

  114. Why that flight?

  115. Why did some not survive?

  116. And why did others walk away unhurt?

  117. Perhaps in some of our more reflective moments.

  118. We ask.

  119. Why them?

  120. And not me?

  121. As we think back on last Thursday's tragedy.

  122. I want us this morning.

  123. Not to allow this suffering to pass.

  124. Without us all thinking deeply and carefully.

  125. About how we should all respond when suffering strikes.

  126. And as we do this together.

  127. I want us to look at 2 Corinthians chapter 1.

    2 Corinthians 1 chapter mention

  128. So please have your Bibles open.

  129. Ready.

  130. Ready.

  131. To engage.

  132. And to hear what God's word says to us.

  133. This is the passage that we looked at.

  134. In our home groups on Wednesday.

  135. A study that I believe was not by chance.

  136. But one that would prepare us for the news that came the following morning.

  137. But before we look at this passage.

  138. We're going to pray.

  139. And to ask God to help us.

  140. Let's do that now.

  141. Let's do that now.

  142. Indescribable.

  143. Uncontainable.

  144. The ways of God.

  145. The ways of God.

  146. Are beyond our understanding.

  147. All powerful.

  148. Humbly.

  149. We bow before you.

  150. Humbly.

  151. We ask that you would speak to us.

  152. That your voice.

  153. That your voice.

  154. Would speak through the suffering.

  155. Of this world.

  156. Into our lives.

  157. We ask that not one of us here this morning.

  158. Would allow these events to pass.

  159. Without them doing the work in our lives that they should do.

  160. Teach us.

  161. Teach us.

  162. Teach us.

  163. Teach us.

  164. How we should respond.

  165. And may we be people.

  166. Who love you.

  167. And worship you.

  168. In every circumstance.

  169. Of life.

  170. Amen.

  171. The first thing that we should take.

  172. From this air tragedy.

  173. Is that suffering.

  174. Is a reality.

  175. I'm not going to be smart.

  176. And pretend that I have answers.

  177. Because I don't.

  178. In fact the more answers that we give.

  179. The more questions that we ask.

  180. Thursday was just another reminder to us.

  181. And to the wider community that we live in.

  182. That we have a broken and a decaying world.

  183. Most of the tragic events that happen in this world.

  184. Pass us by without much thought.

  185. The recent floods and fires in Australia.

  186. The unseen illness and disease that a billion children live with every day.

  187. But then something happens.

  188. Something a little bit closer to home.

  189. It stops us in our tracks.

  190. And it makes us think.

  191. We look away from the computer screen.

  192. We put down our pen.

  193. We think.

  194. Paul knew what it was to live in a suffering world.

  195. We read that in verse 8.

  196. Have a look at it there.

  197. 2 Corinthians 1.

  198. We do not want you to be uninformed.

  199. Brothers and sisters.

  200. About the hardships we suffered in the province of Asia.

  201. We were under great pressure.

  202. Far beyond our ability to endure.

  203. So that we despaired even of life.

  204. This particular kind of suffering.

  205. Was hostility and persecution.

  206. But it was suffering all the same.

  207. It was so intense.

  208. It was so intense.

  209. He says.

  210. That it was beyond our ability to endure.

  211. In fact they thought that through these things they were going to die.

  212. Verse 9.

  213. Indeed in our hearts we felt the sentence of death.

  214. Suffering can.

  215. And it will come in all kinds of different ways.

  216. It is inescapable.

  217. From the moment Adam and Eve pushed God from the center.

  218. And made themselves God.

  219. The whole world broke.

  220. Everything moved from order to chaos.

  221. It was like the cogs in the wheel began to jam.

  222. And everything became disjointed.

  223. And out of sync.

  224. And the world began to grind.

  225. The world and its people have been feeling the effects ever since.

  226. Physically we suffer with disease and illness.

  227. Cancers and death.

  228. Cosmologically we suffer with climate change.

  229. And destructive weather patterns.

  230. Socially we suffer with community and relational breakdown.

  231. These are experiences common to us all.

  232. And they are unavoidable.

  233. Whether you are a Christian.

  234. Or not yet a Christian.

  235. We all feel these effects.

  236. No one is immune to them.

  237. And living in this world with all its pain and its hurt.

  238. It's like we too in the words of Paul.

  239. Feel the sentence of death.

  240. It's like death follows us round like a shadow.

  241. And when we go through our own personal suffering.

  242. Whatever shape it may take us.

  243. We too can even despair of life.

  244. We live with the reality of a broken and a disjointed world.

  245. Where life goes wrong.

  246. Bad things happen.

  247. Tragic events strike.

  248. People get ill.

  249. Mountains shake.

  250. And planes crash.

  251. So the first thing that we need to take from this.

  252. Is that suffering is a reality.

  253. The second thing that I think we could take from this air tragedy.

  254. Is that suffering is ordained.

  255. For many people Thursday's crash is a sign that God is either unloving.

  256. Or impotent.

  257. That means he's not powerful.

  258. Or he is both.

  259. People say if he was loving he would not have allowed these things to happen.

  260. What kind of loving God lets people suffer in a plane crash?

  261. Others say if he was powerful he would have stopped this from happening.

  262. What kind of God is he that he can't even control the weather?

  263. They're normal responses.

  264. And if we're honest we ask them too.

  265. But as we will see rather than a God who sits immune to what goes on.

  266. He controls everything that happens.

  267. So let me make it crystal clear what we are saying.

  268. God ordained the air crash on Thursday morning.

  269. Look at verse 5.

  270. It says therefore just as the sufferings of Christ overflow into our lives.

  271. We're going to come back to that verse.

  272. But I just want us to pick up on the sufferings of Christ.

  273. It's talking about his death.

  274. His death was not a tragic accident.

  275. Christ's death was ordained by God.

  276. Listen to what it says in Acts 4 verse 28.

    Acts 4:28

  277. This is speaking about the suffering of Jesus.

  278. People were responsible.

  279. People were responsible.

  280. But this is what it says.

  281. They did what your power and will had decided before it should happen.

  282. This doesn't mean that God allowed it.

  283. Or that God permitted it.

  284. But that God caused it to happen.

  285. They did what your power and will had decided beforehand should happen.

  286. And I'm not saying these things to score deep theological points.

  287. I'm saying it because it awakens our conscience to a God who is all loving and a God who is all powerful.

  288. Because if God has ordained it, it means he's in control of it.

  289. The world and its people are not subjected to random chance.

  290. Life is not a lottery.

  291. Things only happen as God ordains it to happen.

  292. Keep your finger in 2 Corinthians and flick back to the reading in Job chapter 37.

    Job 37 chapter mention

  293. It's on page 537.

  294. Job was a man who suffered greatly.

  295. In chapter 1 of Job we read how natural disasters caused the death of his family.

  296. And he struggles and he contemplates.

  297. And a friend, not to be confused with the three friends that spoke ill advice,

  298. but a good one who came to him spoke these words.

  299. Job 37 verse 6.

    Job 37:6

  300. God says to the snow, fall on the earth.

  301. God says to the rain shower, be a mighty downpour.

  302. God says to the rain shower, be a mighty downpour.

  303. So that all people he has made may know his works.

  304. He stops every man from his labour.

  305. Verse 11.

  306. He loads the clouds with moisture.

  307. And we can take that that's the fog as well.

  308. He scatters his lightning through them.

  309. At his direction they swirl around over the face of the whole earth

  310. to do whatever he commands them.

  311. Verse 14.

  312. Listen to this.

  313. Stop and consider God's wonders.

  314. Job didn't understand it.

  315. And nor do we.

  316. But if God is in sovereign control,

  317. that means we have a God that we can trust.

  318. What kind of God would he be if he watched helplessly

  319. as weather patterns formed that he couldn't control?

  320. He would be nothing more than a mad professor

  321. who watches helplessly as his controlled experiment

  322. gets out of control.

  323. In the midst of tragedy,

  324. there is this mystery

  325. as to why God ordained it.

  326. But there comes with it an invitation to trust

  327. and hold on to the God

  328. who rules and controls our entire universe

  329. and all its powers.

  330. Look at verse 9 back to 2 Corinthians chapter 1.

    2 Corinthians 1 chapter mention

  331. The middle of verse 9.

  332. But this happened.

  333. What happened to Paul was not a mistake.

  334. It was not a surprise.

  335. It was not out of God's hands.

  336. It happened.

  337. It was ordained.

  338. And it was the same on Thursday morning.

  339. The early morning fog.

  340. The flight times.

  341. The passengers.

  342. The survivors.

  343. The fact that Donal could not move seats

  344. to the front of the plane when he requested

  345. and he had to sit at the back of the plane.

  346. Everything that happened.

  347. Everything that happened.

  348. Was in the mysterious hands of God.

  349. And let me say this with the greatest respect and humility.

  350. Let us banish every thought

  351. that God would be somehow less powerful,

  352. less loving,

  353. less worthy of our praise and worship

  354. if our friend Donal had passed away.

  355. I don't pretend that any of this is easy.

  356. Every thought raises a hundred questions.

  357. But I prefer a hundred questions

  358. and all our doubts

  359. and a God who is in control

  360. than a God who is weak,

  361. impotent

  362. and fails to control the world

  363. that he has made.

  364. So it reminds us that suffering is a reality.

  365. Suffering is ordained.

  366. And the third thing that I think we should take from this tragedy

  367. is that suffering has purpose.

  368. One of the comments that people have made

  369. and will make about Thursday's crash

  370. is that it was all pointless.

  371. It was a waste of life.

  372. Amidst all the hurting and pain,

  373. we can't make any sense of it.

  374. We've been reading that Paul suffered

  375. to the point of death.

  376. In fact, those who he was writing to were suffering.

  377. And while it doesn't ease the pain

  378. or soften the blow or end the hurt,

  379. there is a mysterious purpose in suffering.

  380. First, I think suffering enables comfort to take place.

  381. Look at verse 3.

  382. Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,

  383. the Father of compassion,

  384. the God of all comfort,

  385. who comforts us in all our troubles.

  386. God is not distant, cold and immune to the hurt.

  387. He is our Father.

  388. He is intimately involved with us and with our world.

  389. And as a Father,

  390. it tells us here,

  391. He is the source of all compassion and all comfort.

  392. Compassion literally means to suffer with.

  393. And so He enters into our suffering to bring comfort.

  394. But notice how that suffering comes.

  395. Go back to verse 5.

  396. For just as the sufferings of Christ flow over into our lives,

  397. so also through Christ our comfort overflows.

  398. The sufferings here of Christ refer to His death.

  399. And I think it's saying that when it talks about the suffering of Christ

  400. flowing over into our lives,

  401. it's saying that the benefits of the cross

  402. overflow into our suffering lives.

  403. When we turn to Christ

  404. and receive the overflowing comfort of the cross,

  405. not just our sins forgiven,

  406. but His grace and His peace

  407. and His strength and His joy,

  408. all of these things flow from the suffering of Christ

  409. to His people.

  410. And all of this has a purpose.

  411. Back to verse 4.

  412. This God who comforts us in all our troubles,

  413. so that we can comfort those in any trouble

  414. with the comfort we ourselves have received from God.

  415. Let me read to you a quote

  416. from Stephen Saint.

  417. Stephen Saint lost his own father.

  418. His father was a pilot.

  419. He lost his father when he was very young.

  420. In later years when Stephen married,

  421. his daughter of age 18

  422. was suddenly taken from them,

  423. died without reason.

  424. And this is what he says about the reasons

  425. why suffering comes into our lives.

  426. Let me quote.

  427. If we are going to emulate our Saviour,

  428. if we have to identify with the people

  429. to whom we take His good news,

  430. I don't advocate that we look for suffering.

  431. Life brings enough of it on its own.

  432. But what I do advocate

  433. is that suffering is an important prerequisite

  434. to ministering to hurting people.

  435. Christ took on our likeness

  436. and subjected himself

  437. to the suffering that plagues us.

  438. I am convinced that we should not make heroic efforts

  439. and expend vast resources

  440. like the rest of society does

  441. to avoid suffering.

  442. Not only would a willingness to experience hurt

  443. give us a credibility with suffering people,

  444. but it would also give God

  445. a special opportunity

  446. to prove His sufficiency

  447. to meet our needs.

  448. He comforts us

  449. in our suffering.

  450. Suffering comes.

  451. It is not wasted

  452. because it enables us

  453. to better comfort those

  454. who also suffer.

  455. The second purpose

  456. that I think suffering brings

  457. is that it ensures hope.

  458. Look at verse 9.

  459. He says,

  460. Indeed, in our hearts

  461. we felt the sentence of death.

  462. But this happened

  463. that we might not rely on ourselves,

  464. but on God who raises the dead.

  465. He has delivered us

  466. from such deadly peril.

  467. And He will deliver us.

  468. On Him we have set our hope

  469. that He will continue

  470. to deliver us.

  471. Suffering causes us to see

  472. that we are not in control

  473. or able to determine

  474. the pattern of our life.

  475. In fact, it shows

  476. our complete frailty.

  477. However, in the midst

  478. of our helplessness

  479. and our weakness,

  480. it is in that very weakness

  481. that hope begins

  482. to shine through.

  483. For Paul,

  484. God had delivered him.

  485. Literally,

  486. He had saved him

  487. from death.

  488. And he is confident

  489. that God will save him

  490. in the future.

  491. But more than that,

  492. look at verse 10.

  493. He says,

  494. He has delivered us

  495. from such deadly peril

  496. and He will deliver us.

  497. And on Him we have set

  498. our hope

  499. that He will continue

  500. to deliver us.

  501. This hope that He is talking about

  502. was beyond the present.

  503. It was beyond

  504. His immediate future.

  505. And it was taking Him

  506. into eternity

  507. for Paul knew

  508. that he lived in a world

  509. that was broken.

  510. There would be times

  511. God would deliver him

  512. but a time would come

  513. when He would pass

  514. into eternity.

  515. His sufferings caused him

  516. to think upon the resurrection.

  517. That God has power

  518. and victory over the grave.

  519. And He will bring Him

  520. safely to a world

  521. without suffering.

  522. Even if our life

  523. and its will

  524. and whatever form it takes

  525. it ends in death,

  526. it is not the end

  527. but the beginning.

  528. The sure and the certain guarantee

  529. of a new creation,

  530. of no more death

  531. or mourning

  532. or crying

  533. or pain.

  534. No more earthquakes.

  535. No more famine.

  536. Diseases

  537. or cancer.

  538. And no more plane crashes.

  539. Suffering

  540. is not wasted

  541. because it points forward

  542. to the resurrection,

  543. the hope

  544. of an eternity

  545. with Him.

  546. The third thing

  547. that I think

  548. that suffering,

  549. the purpose in suffering

  550. is this,

  551. that it brings

  552. salvation.

  553. verse 6.

  554. He says,

  555. if we are distressed

  556. and that distress

  557. is one of suffering,

  558. it is for your comfort

  559. and salvation.

  560. Paul knew

  561. that as he suffered

  562. in his distress,

  563. God was working

  564. out his salvation

  565. in the lives

  566. of others.

  567. I can't explain it.

  568. I certainly

  569. don't understand it.

  570. But God's Word

  571. tells us

  572. that through suffering,

  573. God brings

  574. His salvation.

  575. On Wednesday,

  576. we looked very briefly

  577. at the life of Joseph.

  578. Sold into slavery

  579. with his brothers.

  580. He suffered terribly.

  581. Many years later,

  582. he was able

  583. to help his brothers

  584. who had sold him

  585. into slavery

  586. and this is what

  587. he could say.

  588. You didn't send me here,

  589. but God did.

  590. Ordained,

  591. planned and purposed.

  592. You didn't send me here,

  593. but God.

  594. It was to save lives

  595. that God sent me

  596. ahead of you.

  597. God brings salvation

  598. through suffering.

  599. But perhaps we see

  600. this most of all

  601. in Jesus.

  602. He was innocent.

  603. He only did

  604. what was right

  605. and good.

  606. He fed the poor.

  607. He healed the sick.

  608. He comforted the broken.

  609. He raised the dead.

  610. But yet,

  611. He died a cruel

  612. and horrible death.

  613. Why?

  614. Well,

  615. as we look to Christ

  616. and see all that

  617. He suffered for us,

  618. not just the violent

  619. execution,

  620. but suffering

  621. hell for us.

  622. Suffering,

  623. the ultimate suffering

  624. to bring us

  625. salvation.

  626. He suffered for us

  627. so that we might

  628. experience

  629. and know

  630. His grace

  631. in our lives.

  632. God will take

  633. and use our suffering,

  634. shaping it

  635. and conforming it

  636. to do His work

  637. in the lives

  638. of others.

  639. and I am convinced

  640. without any doubts

  641. at all

  642. that Thursday's tragedy

  643. that God

  644. will work

  645. His salvation

  646. in the lives

  647. of people.

  648. Suffering

  649. is not wasted

  650. because God

  651. worked through it

  652. to bring about

  653. His salvation's plan.

  654. On Thursday morning,

  655. there was a terrible fog

  656. that reduced visibility.

  657. A heavy cloud

  658. that the pilot

  659. couldn't see

  660. the runway.

  661. His vision

  662. was compromised.

  663. He was flying

  664. blind.

  665. Suffering

  666. can seem

  667. like a fog

  668. to us.

  669. We can't see

  670. what it is all about.

  671. From our

  672. earthly perspective,

  673. our vision

  674. is blurred.

  675. We admit

  676. we don't understand

  677. the mind of God

  678. and His ways.

  679. We struggle

  680. to comprehend.

  681. We can't see

  682. how He is working

  683. in this world.

  684. We're blinded.

  685. but we trust

  686. Him.

  687. Look at verse 9.

  688. The middle

  689. of verse 9.

  690. But this

  691. happened

  692. that we might

  693. not rely

  694. on ourselves

  695. but on God.

  696. As we walk

  697. by faith

  698. through this

  699. world

  700. of suffering,

  701. may God

  702. enable us

  703. to rely

  704. on Him

  705. all the more.

  706. One day

  707. the fog

  708. will lift.

  709. One day

  710. the clouds

  711. that blur

  712. our vision

  713. will be

  714. rolled back.

  715. And Christ

  716. will come

  717. and bring us

  718. to His

  719. eternal home

  720. where we will

  721. be comforted

  722. forever.

  723. may God

  724. give us

  725. faith

  726. to see

  727. the purposes

  728. of His

  729. workings

  730. through a

  731. suffering

  732. and broken

  733. world.

  734. Let's pray.

  735. Let's pray.

  736. Let's just

  737. take time

  738. to reflect

  739. ...

  740. ...

  741. ...

  742. ...

  743. ...

  744. ...

  745. ...

  746. ...

  747. ...

  748. ...

  749. ...

  750. Amen.

  751. Our Father God, we confess that you are God and we are not.

  752. You are creator and we are your creation.

  753. And while we cannot understand or fathom your ways and your workings,

  754. while we have questions and doubts, joy and anger,

  755. Father, help us to submit to your ways.

  756. Help us to rely and to trust in you,

  757. that you are working out your purposes in ways that we do not always see.

  758. And we pray, Father God, that through these events of Thursday,

  759. that you will pour out your comfort into the lives of those who are grieving,

  760. that you will bring those who have experienced suffering

  761. so that they can comfort in a way that no one else can do so.

  762. We pray that they will find hope and assurance and life in Christ.

  763. We pray that you will work your salvation.

  764. And we pray that we as people will love you and worship you and honour you,

  765. whether it is a bright, sunny and cloudless day,

  766. or whether the fog is heavy and things happen.

  767. We ask for your help and humbly pray that you will teach us.

  768. In Jesus' name, Amen.
