  1. I tell you the truth, the man who does not enter the sheep pen by the gate, but climbs in by some other way, is a thief and a robber.

  2. The man who enters by the gate is the shepherd of his sheep.

  3. The watchman opens the gate for him, and the sheep listen to his voice.

  4. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.

  5. When he has brought out all his own, he goes on ahead of them, and his sheep follow him because they know his voice.

  6. But they will never follow a stranger.

  7. In fact, they will run away from him because they do not recognize a stranger's voice.

  8. Jesus used this figure of speech, but they did not understand what he was telling them.

  9. Therefore Jesus said again, I tell you the truth, I am the gate for the sheep.

  10. All who ever came before me were thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not listen to them.

  11. I am the gate.

  12. Whoever enters through me will be saved.

  13. He will come in and go out and find pasture.

  14. The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy.

  15. I have come that they may have life and have it to the full.

  16. I am the good shepherd.

  17. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.

  18. The hired hand is not the shepherd who owns the sheep.

  19. So when he sees the wolf coming, he abandons the sheep and runs away.

  20. Then the wolf attacks the flock and scatters it.

  21. The man runs away because he is a hired hand and cares nothing for the sheep.

  22. I am the good shepherd.

  23. I know my sheep and my sheep know me, just as the father knows me and I know the father.

  24. And I lay down my life for the sheep.

  25. I have other sheep that are not of this sheep pen.

  26. I must bring them also.

  27. They too will listen to my voice and there shall be one flock and one shepherd.

  28. The reason my father loves me is that I lay down my life only to take it up again.

  29. No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord.

  30. I have authority to lay it down and authority to take it up again.

  31. This command I received from my father.

  32. At these words, the Jews were again divided.

  33. Many of them said, he is demon possessed and raving mad.

  34. Why listen to him?

  35. But others said, these are not the sayings of a man possessed by a demon.

  36. Can a demon open the eyes of the blind?

  37. Thanks, Chris.

  38. Many of you will have noticed that I am not Johnny.

  39. Johnny is away this weekend.

  40. He is speaking in Dublin at a church weekend for Grosvenor Road Baptist Church,

  41. the church that he served his apprenticeship in.

  42. So we can be praying for Johnny as he is up there speaking to the church.

  43. But in this place, we have Michael Grant.

  44. The name is familiar.

  45. Johnny's father.

  46. It is great to have you with us this morning, Michael.

  47. And if I can invite you up as you share God's word with us this morning.

  48. I knew he wasn't Johnny.

  49. He's got more hair than Johnny.

  50. Anyway, it's good to be with you once again and to be able to share from God's word.

  51. And as you've already heard, we're looking today at the good shepherd.

  52. And I think last week you looked at I am the bread.

  53. And we see in John chapter 10 and verse 11, the same thoughts on I am.

    John 10 chapter mention

  54. I am the bread of life.

  55. And here in verse 11 of chapter 10 of John, we have I am the good shepherd.

  56. Of course, there are lots of descriptions regarding the Lord Jesus Christ.

  57. And all of them describe something of his attributes, something of his character, if you like, something of his beauty.

  58. And it's true of this particular description from the words of the Lord Jesus himself.

  59. It's very beautiful.

  60. I am the Lord's shepherd.

  61. I am the Lord is my shepherd, says the psalmist.

  62. And here it is.

  63. I am the good shepherd.

  64. There was a commentator by the name of John Brown who lived a number of years ago.

  65. And he was studying these words.

  66. And this is what he said about them.

  67. They are at once transparently clear and unfathomably deep.

  68. There is much important truth on the surface.

  69. There is more, much more beneath it.

  70. Much meaning meets the year, but more meets the mind.

  71. The words express much.

  72. They suggest more.

  73. They are replete with emphasis.

  74. And if you want that in everyday English, a child can understand these words.

  75. I am the good shepherd and can gain much from it.

  76. Some of us who were brought up through Sunday school, we heard the story of the good shepherd

  77. and the seeking shepherd who went out to look for the lost sheep.

  78. And we understood it.

  79. And we gained something from it.

  80. And yet there is something here.

  81. If we have studied the scriptures for the whole of our lives, we can still learn more.

  82. And I would suggest to you this morning that as we look at this subject of the Lord Jesus being a good shepherd,

  83. that our minds are open to receive things that perhaps we have not heard before,

  84. that will encourage us, not only now, but in the very day of our death also,

  85. when we shall meet face to face with the good shepherd.

  86. But to interpret this with these words of the Lord Jesus,

  87. we need to see that the idea of the shepherd is firmly rooted in the Old Testament scriptures.

  88. We tend to look at a shepherd through our Western eyes,

  89. and we see, as I did when I was coming over from Killa today,

  90. we look at fields, and we see sheep in them.

  91. And there's all things that can go wrong with sheep.

  92. And the shepherd has to go to the field and look out for things,

  93. particularly this time of the year when there's lambing going on.

  94. And we tend to think of a shepherd in those terms,

  95. but we dare not think of a shepherd in those terms.

  96. We think of an Eastern shepherd, and we think of one who,

  97. in this particular title of the Lord Jesus,

  98. a title that is firmly rooted in the Old Testament.

  99. It reminds me of a story of somebody who was taking a group of young people

  100. over to the Holy Land, so-called,

  101. and he was taking them over,

  102. and he was giving talks each day about various aspects of life in the Holy Land.

  103. And one of the talks this particular morning was on the good shepherd

  104. who goes before and calls his sheep by name,

  105. and they follow him.

  106. If you go out to Israel,

  107. indeed I've seen it in Spain as well,

  108. a shepherd going before,

  109. and the sheep following after the shepherd,

  110. leading them to the good pasture.

  111. And the pastor who was leading this particular group said,

  112. well, it's a good thing to do,

  113. and it's a lovely story of the shepherd leading the sheep.

  114. And he was telling the people about this.

  115. Well, as they were going out on their coach tour that particular day

  116. to one of the sites,

  117. they saw some sheep going along the road,

  118. but the man wasn't in front.

  119. He was behind.

  120. And they were saying,

  121. I thought you said the shepherd goes ahead.

  122. Well, he does, he said.

  123. I can't understand this.

  124. Stop the coach.

  125. Stop the coach.

  126. So he went back and spoke to this man.

  127. And there was nodding and talking going on.

  128. And eventually he comes back to the coach,

  129. and he says,

  130. well, I found out the secret.

  131. That wasn't the shepherd.

  132. That was the butcher.

  133. The butcher drives his sheep.

  134. The shepherd leads his sheep.

  135. And thank God for a shepherd who leads his sheep.

  136. So let's look at this story together.

  137. Let's see that the title suggests the deity of the Lord Jesus.

  138. I am the good shepherd.

  139. Just a few chapters before in chapter 8 and verse 58,

  140. Jesus says to the people,

  141. before Abraham was born, I am.

  142. And the people are ready to stone him because he said that.

  143. They said, you're a man,

  144. and yet you're making yourself equal with God.

  145. That's not correct.

  146. And they're ready to stone him.

  147. I am was a title that spoke of deity.

  148. So when we read these words,

  149. I am the good shepherd,

  150. it's saying that Jesus is truly God.

  151. I am is rooted way back in Exodus chapter 3.

    Exodus 3 chapter mention

  152. Remember that Moses was out in the desert.

  153. He was watching sheep.

  154. And he sees a bush that's burning with fire.

  155. And yet it's not consumed.

  156. And Moses goes over to look at this bush

  157. to see exactly what is happening.

  158. And God speaks to him from the bush.

  159. He tells him to take his shoes off

  160. because he's standing on holy ground.

  161. And then in Exodus 3 and verse 6,

  162. he says,

  163. I am the God of Abraham,

  164. the God of Isaac,

  165. the God of Jacob.

  166. And Moses is terrified

  167. because he's face to face with the living God.

  168. And God speaks to Moses and says,

  169. I've chosen you

  170. to lead my people

  171. out of the land of bondage,

  172. out of the land of slavery,

  173. into the land of Egypt.

  174. You're going to be the leader.

  175. Now, Joseph,

  176. Moses rather,

  177. doesn't like the job description.

  178. And he argues with God.

  179. He doesn't want to go.

  180. Let somebody else go.

  181. I can't speak.

  182. And he goes through all the arguments.

  183. And then in verse 13 of that same passage,

  184. he says,

  185. Suppose I go to the Israelites

  186. and say to them,

  187. The God of our fathers has sent me to you.

  188. And they ask me,

  189. What is his name?

  190. What shall I tell them?

  191. And God says to Moses,

  192. This is my name.

  193. I am that I am.

  194. Tell them,

  195. I am has sent me to you.

  196. What does it mean,

  197. I am?

  198. Well, God was making known to Moses

  199. that he was unchanging.

  200. That he was Yahweh, Jehovah,

  201. the one who would be with him.

  202. He would be with Moses.

  203. His presence would go with Moses.

  204. His power would be with Moses.

  205. He would go with him

  206. in order to accomplish the task

  207. of bringing the people

  208. out of the land of slavery

  209. into the land of promise.

  210. I am the ever-present one,

  211. the unchanging one.

  212. We, for ourselves,

  213. are always changing.

  214. We cannot be everywhere present.

  215. I am here today.

  216. I don't expect to be here tomorrow.

  217. Because I'm here today,

  218. I cannot be in my own local church

  219. in Middleton.

  220. And the day will come

  221. when I will pass from the scene of time.

  222. And they will speak of Michael Grant

  223. in the past tense.

  224. He was.

  225. Etc.

  226. But the God that we serve

  227. and the God who reveals Himself to us

  228. in the person of the Lord Jesus

  229. is the I Am.

  230. In the Lord Jesus,

  231. we have One who is eternally present with us.

  232. I am the Good Shepherds.

  233. We have the eternal presence

  234. of the eternal God

  235. in the person of the Lord Jesus Christ.

  236. So when Jesus says this,

  237. I am the Good Shepherd,

  238. He is making it clear

  239. that He is the eternal,

  240. ever-present One.

  241. I am the bread of life,

  242. always there to satisfy us.

  243. I am the resurrection

  244. and the life.

  245. He is the eternal life.

  246. And our life is in Him.

  247. He is the bread.

  248. He is the resurrection and the life.

  249. He is the Good Shepherd,

  250. the I Am.

  251. I am the Good Shepherd.

  252. And that again speaks to us

  253. of the One who is eternal.

  254. If you were listening to Jesus' words

  255. for the first time

  256. over there in the land of Israel

  257. as it is today,

  258. you would immediately go back

  259. to the Old Testament Scriptures.

  260. The New Testament

  261. wouldn't have been available

  262. for these people.

  263. It was yet to be written.

  264. So their Scriptures

  265. were the Old Testament Scriptures.

  266. What were the Scriptures

  267. that they would think of

  268. as Jesus says,

  269. I am the Good Shepherd?

  270. They would think

  271. of Psalm 23 and verse 1.

  272. The Lord, Yahweh, Jehovah,

  273. is my shepherd.

  274. And yet Jesus is saying,

  275. I am the Good Shepherd.

  276. He was saying that that shepherd

  277. that David spoke of

  278. in the 23rd Psalm,

  279. that's me, I manifest in the flesh.

  280. They would think of perhaps

  281. Psalm 95 and verse 6.

  282. Come, let us bow down in worship.

  283. Let us kneel before the Lord,

  284. our Maker,

  285. for He is our God

  286. and we are the people

  287. of His pasture,

  288. the flock under His care,

  289. the concern of a shepherd

  290. who's worthy of worship

  291. and praise.

  292. And the psalmist is thinking

  293. of Him being not only

  294. our Lord and Maker,

  295. but the one who watches

  296. over Him personally

  297. and over His people.

  298. Or maybe they would think

  299. of the prophecy of Ezekiel,

    Ezekiel 34 chapter mention

  300. chapter 34 and verse 15.

  301. I myself will tend my sheep

  302. and make them lie down,

  303. declares the Sovereign Lord.

  304. So thinking of this title

  305. that the Lord Jesus gives to Himself,

  306. He's clearly demonstrating

  307. that He is the eternal I Am,

  308. that He is the Good Shepherd,

  309. that He is the shepherd

  310. who was spoken of

  311. in the New Testament,

  312. who is now being manifest

  313. in the flesh.

  314. My friends,

  315. when we think of this,

  316. it should cause us

  317. to praise and worship.

  318. We are His people.

  319. He has come down

  320. to where we are

  321. to bring deliverance for us,

  322. to deliver us from the,

  323. not only sin,

  324. but the power of sin.

  325. It should thrill our hearts.

  326. It should cause us to wonder,

  327. to stand in awe.

  328. And if we are true Christians today,

  329. we can say with Peter,

  330. as he does in 1 Peter 2 and verse 25,

  331. For you were like sheep

  332. going astray,

  333. but now you have returned

  334. to the shepherd

  335. and overseer of your souls.

  336. You have been brought

  337. into the fold of God

  338. through the One

  339. who was eternally God

  340. who came down

  341. to live among us.

  342. The Lord reveals His deity

  343. in these words.

  344. But also in these words,

  345. the Lord reveals His destiny.

  346. And what was His destiny?

  347. Well again,

  348. if you go back to verse 11,

  349. we see I am the good shepherd.

  350. The good shepherd

  351. lays down His life

  352. for the sheep.

  353. We have the same thought

  354. in the latter part

  355. of verse 14.

  356. I lay down my life,

  357. says the good shepherd.

  358. We have the same thought

  359. in verse 17.

  360. The reason my Father loves me

  361. is that I lay down my life.

  362. Jesus is speaking

  363. to His disciples

  364. amongst others

  365. and He's telling them

  366. what is going to happen.

  367. He will become

  368. even more specific

  369. later on

  370. as He goes to Gethsemane.

  371. And He says to His disciples

  372. in Matthew 26 and verse 31,

  373. This very night

  374. you will all fall away

  375. on account of Me,

  376. for it is written,

  377. I will strike the shepherd

  378. and the sheep of the flock

  379. will be scattered.

  380. Which is a direct reference

  381. to Zechariah 13 and verse 7.

  382. So when we think

  383. of this particular

  384. I am of Jesus,

  385. we have to associate it

  386. with His death.

  387. He is different to others

  388. who came before Him.

  389. Jesus refers to them

  390. in this passage

  391. as hirelings.

  392. What happened

  393. to the hired hand?

  394. Well, Jesus contrasts Himself

  395. with the hired hand.

  396. In verse 12,

  397. He says,

  398. The hired hand

  399. is not the shepherd

  400. who owns the sheep.

  401. So when He sees

  402. the wolf coming,

  403. He abandons the sheep

  404. and runs away.

  405. He doesn't care

  406. and He doesn't have

  407. an interest

  408. in the flock.

  409. Soon,

  410. not only the wolf

  411. would attack,

  412. but the pack of wolves

  413. would attack

  414. the Lord Jesus.

  415. There would be

  416. the chief priests,

  417. the Pharisees,

  418. Herod,

  419. Pilate.

  420. They would all

  421. attack Him

  422. in one way

  423. or another.

  424. But He doesn't run

  425. because He cares

  426. for the sheep.

  427. The Good Shepherd

  428. knew that He came,

  429. yes,

  430. eternally God,

  431. but He becomes man

  432. in order that He might

  433. die there

  434. upon the cross

  435. of Calvary.

  436. He becomes

  437. obedient to death,

  438. even death

  439. upon the cross.

  440. He lays down

  441. His life

  442. because He's not

  443. the hired hand

  444. and He lays down

  445. His life gladly

  446. and willingly.

  447. Look at verse 18.

  448. No one takes

  449. my life from me,

  450. but I lay it down

  451. of my own accord.

  452. I have authority

  453. to lay it down

  454. and authority

  455. to take it again.

  456. This command

  457. have I received

  458. from the Father.

  459. Oh, there was

  460. ample opportunity

  461. for Jesus

  462. to run away

  463. as hired hands did.

  464. But He didn't run.

  465. He went all the way

  466. to Calvary.

  467. He lays down

  468. His life

  469. as the good shepherd.

  470. No one

  471. took His life

  472. from Him.

  473. He lay it down

  474. of Himself.

  475. Think of this

  476. for a moment.

  477. Jesus goes

  478. to Gethsemane.

  479. We know

  480. that He could

  481. have called

  482. the legions

  483. of angels

  484. to come

  485. to His aid,

  486. but He does not.

  487. He prays,

  488. Father,

  489. if You be willing,

  490. take this cup

  491. from Me,

  492. this cup of suffering,

  493. this cup of death.

  494. Yet,

  495. not My will,

  496. but Yours

  497. be done.

  498. And as He prays,

  499. we are told

  500. His sweat

  501. was as it were

  502. drops of blood

  503. falling to the ground.

  504. He was in agony

  505. as He faced

  506. death

  507. upon the cross

  508. because He was going

  509. to bear the sins

  510. of many

  511. there upon

  512. the cross.

  513. As He's in the garden,

  514. we see Judas

  515. approaching

  516. with the officials

  517. and the chief priests

  518. and the Pharisees.

  519. and they're all

  520. armed to the teeth.

  521. And John,

  522. giving his account

  523. of this particular

  524. happening,

  525. says in John 18

  526. and verse 4

  527. that Jesus

  528. speaks to these

  529. crowds

  530. that are coming

  531. to get Him.

  532. Who is it

  533. you want?

  534. Jesus of Nazareth,

  535. they reply.

  536. And then Jesus

  537. says,

  538. I am He.

  539. And we're told

  540. that they fell

  541. backwards.

  542. Who's in charge

  543. of the situation?

  544. Is it those

  545. that are armed

  546. to the teeth?

  547. No,

  548. they're not in charge

  549. of the situation.

  550. When Jesus said,

  551. I am He,

  552. they drew back

  553. and fell

  554. to the ground.

  555. And only then

  556. does Jesus

  557. allow them

  558. to take Him

  559. away

  560. to be crucified.

  561. He lays

  562. down His

  563. life

  564. as the

  565. Good Shepherd.

  566. And He

  567. lays down

  568. His life

  569. to bring

  570. a people

  571. to Himself.

  572. It's not just

  573. that He dies

  574. a martyr's death

  575. as others

  576. have done

  577. for various

  578. religions

  579. of the world.

  580. But He lays

  581. down His

  582. life,

  583. we are told,

  584. for the sheep.

  585. He says

  586. it in verse 11

  587. that He lays

  588. down His

  589. life for the sheep.

  590. Again,

  591. we have it

  592. in the latter

  593. part of verse 14.

  594. I lay

  595. down My

  596. life

  597. for the sheep.

  598. Who were

  599. these sheep?

  600. Well,

  601. they certainly

  602. included Jews,

  603. but they also

  604. included Gentiles.

  605. It included

  606. people like

  607. you and

  608. I.

  609. Verse 16

  610. says,

  611. I have other

  612. sheep that

  613. are not of

  614. this sheep pen.

  615. I must bring

  616. them also.

  617. They too

  618. will listen

  619. to My voice

  620. and there

  621. shall be

  622. one fold

  623. and one

  624. shepherd.

  625. So here

  626. the Good Shepherd

  627. lays down

  628. for His sheep.

  629. Elsewhere

  630. they're referred

  631. to as His

  632. elect,

  633. His chosen.

  634. But He lays

  635. down His life

  636. and gives His

  637. life a ransom

  638. for many.

  639. How many?

  640. Revelation 7

  641. and verse 9

  642. tells us,

  643. a great

  644. multitude

  645. that no man

  646. could number

  647. from every

  648. nation

  649. and tribe

  650. and people

  651. and language.

  652. And I like

  653. the certainty

  654. of this.

  655. The Good Shepherd

  656. is going

  657. to bring

  658. a people

  659. to Himself.

  660. He came

  661. into the world

  662. to seek

  663. and to save

  664. those that

  665. were lost.

  666. And those

  667. of us who

  668. knew the Good

  669. Shepherd

  670. this morning

  671. could look

  672. back to

  673. a time

  674. when they

  675. heard the

  676. Good Shepherd

  677. calling them

  678. out of

  679. darkness

  680. into light.

  681. perhaps they

  682. were in

  683. a church

  684. service.

  685. Perhaps they

  686. were in

  687. their own

  688. home

  689. reading

  690. their own

  691. scriptures.

  692. But they

  693. heard the

  694. voice,

  695. I not

  696. only died,

  697. but I

  698. died for

  699. You.

  700. And humbly

  701. you said,

  702. Lord,

  703. I'm a

  704. sinner.

  705. I need

  706. the Good

  707. Shepherd

  708. as my

  709. Savior.

  710. He died

  711. for me.

  712. And you

  713. were able

  714. to say

  715. from your

  716. heart,

  717. Hallelujah!

  718. What a

  719. Savior!

  720. The

  721. Great

  722. God,

  723. the

  724. Eternal

  725. Shepherd,

  726. became man

  727. to die

  728. in order

  729. to bring

  730. a people

  731. to Himself.

  732. Do you

  733. know the

  734. Good

  735. Shepherd?

  736. Are you

  737. one of the

  738. sheep today

  739. that has

  740. been brought

  741. into the

  742. fold?

  743. Let's

  744. follow this

  745. up.

  746. Because

  747. there's a

  748. third thing

  749. I want

  750. to bring

  751. before you

  752. this morning

  753. and that

  754. is this,

  755. that the

  756. Lord Jesus

  757. in these

  758. words reveals

  759. His

  760. uniqueness.

  761. I am

  762. the Good

  763. Shepherd.

  764. The Good

  765. Shepherd lays

  766. down His

  767. life for

  768. the sheep.

  769. Go back

  770. to verse

  771. 7.

  772. Therefore

  773. Jesus said

  774. to them,

  775. said again,

  776. I tell

  777. you the

  778. truth.

  779. I am

  780. the gate

  781. for the

  782. sheep.

  783. He's

  784. making it

  785. very clear

  786. that there's

  787. only one

  788. way to

  789. enter the

  790. fold and

  791. that is

  792. through

  793. Him.

  794. I

  795. alone

  796. am the

  797. door to

  798. the sheep.

  799. sheep.

  800. There is

  801. no other

  802. entrance

  803. into the

  804. fold of

  805. God's.

  806. In verse

  807. 1, I

  808. tell you the

  809. truth, the

  810. man who

  811. does not

  812. enter the

  813. sheep pen

  814. by the

  815. gate but

  816. climbs by

  817. in some

  818. other way

  819. is a

  820. thief and

  821. a robber.

  822. There's only

  823. one way to

  824. enter into

  825. the sheep

  826. fold and

  827. that is

  828. through the

  829. Lord Jesus

  830. Christ.

  831. Let's

  832. underline this

  833. truth.

  834. We always

  835. have to

  836. remember the

  837. context of

  838. Scripture.

  839. The chapter

  840. headings and

  841. the verses are

  842. there for

  843. our convenience

  844. and our

  845. help.

  846. But we

  847. remember that

  848. chapter 9

  849. preceded

  850. chapter 10.

  851. And in

  852. chapter 9,

  853. you have

  854. a blind

  855. man who

  856. comes to

  857. know that

  858. the Lord

  859. Jesus Christ

  860. is indeed

  861. the one

  862. who's healed

  863. him, who's

  864. also the

  865. Messiah.

  866. And

  867. eventually this

  868. man, because

  869. he puts his

  870. trust in the

  871. Lord Jesus

  872. Christ, is

  873. thrown out

  874. of the

  875. synagogue.

  876. The Pharisees

  877. were upset.

  878. They didn't

  879. like this

  880. man coming

  881. to the

  882. Lord Jesus.

  883. and putting

  884. his trust

  885. in the

  886. Lord Jesus.

  887. They wanted

  888. to put him

  889. from the

  890. scene, as

  891. it were,

  892. this Jesus.

  893. He's not

  894. God.

  895. He's not

  896. a prophet,

  897. as you're

  898. making him

  899. out to be,

  900. they say.

  901. Why were

  902. the Pharisees

  903. upset?

  904. Well, they

  905. thought that

  906. the way of

  907. salvation was

  908. through the

  909. law, through

  910. what they

  911. had to say.

  912. they were

  913. people who

  914. were encouraging

  915. others to

  916. climb in

  917. some other

  918. way.

  919. And maybe

  920. there are

  921. those here

  922. this morning

  923. who think

  924. that they

  925. can climb

  926. into the

  927. sheepfold

  928. through their

  929. own good

  930. works, and

  931. through their

  932. own efforts,

  933. through what

  934. they do,

  935. through their

  936. supposed

  937. obedience,

  938. through their

  939. own righteousness,

  940. righteousness.

  941. But that is

  942. not the

  943. way into

  944. the

  945. sheepfold.

  946. Jesus says,

  947. you must

  948. come through

  949. me.

  950. You must

  951. come through

  952. my death

  953. there upon

  954. the cross

  955. of Calvary.

  956. I am

  957. the way.

  958. In John

  959. 14 and

  960. verse 6,

  961. he says,

  962. I am

  963. the way,

  964. the truth

  965. and the

  966. life.

  967. no one

  968. comes unto

  969. the Father

  970. but by

  971. me.

  972. But if we

  973. come through

  974. the Lord

  975. Jesus,

  976. if we come

  977. to him

  978. acknowledging

  979. our sin

  980. and come

  981. through him,

  982. we're told

  983. in verse 9

  984. that Jesus

  985. says,

  986. I am the

  987. gate.

  988. Whoever

  989. enters

  990. through me

  991. will be

  992. saved.

  993. It's an

  994. old-fashioned

  995. word,

  996. but it's

  997. what needs

  998. to happen,

  999. that you

  1000. and I

  1001. need to

  1002. come to

  1003. the Lord

  1004. Jesus

  1005. Christ

  1006. if we

  1007. would be

  1008. saved.

  1009. Some

  1010. people say,

  1011. and maybe

  1012. even thinking

  1013. in their own

  1014. hearts this

  1015. morning,

  1016. because I

  1017. don't know

  1018. what's going

  1019. on as you're

  1020. listening to

  1021. me,

  1022. you're very

  1023. dogmatic.

  1024. You're not

  1025. leaving any

  1026. other way.

  1027. No,

  1028. I'm not.

  1029. Because the

  1030. Bible doesn't

  1031. give any

  1032. other way.

  1033. there's not

  1034. so many

  1035. ways into

  1036. this

  1037. sheepfold.

  1038. There's only

  1039. one way,

  1040. and that

  1041. is through

  1042. the Lord

  1043. Jesus

  1044. Christ.

  1045. The Lord

  1046. Jesus

  1047. Christ

  1048. himself

  1049. gave a

  1050. commission

  1051. to his

  1052. church

  1053. to go

  1054. into all

  1055. the world

  1056. and preach

  1057. the gospel,

  1058. to go

  1059. and make

  1060. disciples.

  1061. and he

  1062. promised to

  1063. those who

  1064. would go

  1065. that he

  1066. would be

  1067. with them

  1068. to the

  1069. end of

  1070. the age.

  1071. It is

  1072. Jesus

  1073. himself who

  1074. says that

  1075. there is

  1076. no

  1077. alternative.

  1078. It is

  1079. Jesus

  1080. himself

  1081. who says

  1082. there is

  1083. no other

  1084. way.

  1085. And

  1086. therefore,

  1087. the world

  1088. needs to

  1089. hear that

  1090. there is

  1091. only one

  1092. good shepherd

  1093. shepherd

  1094. who can save.

  1095. There is

  1096. only one

  1097. good shepherd

  1098. that can

  1099. bring people

  1100. into the

  1101. very fold

  1102. of God.

  1103. But that

  1104. was the

  1105. good shepherd

  1106. who laid

  1107. down his

  1108. life for

  1109. the sheep.

  1110. So if

  1111. men and

  1112. women would

  1113. be saved,

  1114. they must

  1115. come through

  1116. the Lord

  1117. Jesus Christ,

  1118. the good

  1119. shepherd.

  1120. The final

  1121. thing I want

  1122. to say to

  1123. you this

  1124. morning,

  1125. and that

  1126. is this,

  1127. that this

  1128. Lord Jesus

  1129. reveals

  1130. himself to

  1131. us,

  1132. not only

  1133. as the

  1134. eternal

  1135. God who

  1136. entered

  1137. into time,

  1138. not ceasing

  1139. for a moment

  1140. to be God,

  1141. but becoming

  1142. man and

  1143. dying a

  1144. death upon

  1145. the cross

  1146. of Calvary.

  1147. Not only

  1148. does he

  1149. show himself

  1150. to be

  1151. unique,

  1152. but he

  1153. shows himself

  1154. to us

  1155. as being

  1156. good.

  1157. let's

  1158. focus on

  1159. the wonderful

  1160. fact that

  1161. this one

  1162. who did

  1163. indeed enter

  1164. into time

  1165. is good.

  1166. He is

  1167. good in

  1168. the three

  1169. ways we've

  1170. already

  1171. mentioned.

  1172. He's

  1173. good in

  1174. the fact

  1175. that he,

  1176. though he

  1177. was eternally

  1178. God,

  1179. that he was

  1180. ready to

  1181. enter into

  1182. time.

  1183. the word

  1184. became

  1185. flesh.

  1186. We think

  1187. about that

  1188. at Christmas

  1189. time,

  1190. don't we?

  1191. The word,

  1192. the eternal

  1193. God,

  1194. became flesh

  1195. and made

  1196. his dwelling

  1197. among us.

  1198. And we

  1199. have seen

  1200. his glory,

  1201. the glorious

  1202. of the one

  1203. and only

  1204. who came

  1205. from the

  1206. Father,

  1207. full of

  1208. grace and

  1209. truth.

  1210. Now isn't

  1211. that good?

  1212. That the

  1213. eternal God

  1214. didn't stay

  1215. up in

  1216. heaven,

  1217. as it were,

  1218. and look

  1219. down upon

  1220. us in

  1221. all our

  1222. sin and

  1223. degradation?

  1224. No,

  1225. he came

  1226. to where

  1227. we are,

  1228. and he

  1229. looked upon

  1230. us as

  1231. sheep

  1232. without a

  1233. shepherd,

  1234. and he

  1235. had compassion

  1236. upon us,

  1237. full of

  1238. grace and

  1239. truth.

  1240. God's

  1241. only begotten

  1242. Son should

  1243. come from

  1244. the glory

  1245. of heaven

  1246. to be

  1247. my shepherd.

  1248. Is that

  1249. good or

  1250. isn't it?

  1251. It's good

  1252. and calls

  1253. us to

  1254. worship and

  1255. to wonder

  1256. and to

  1257. marvel that

  1258. he should

  1259. not only be

  1260. good,

  1261. but good

  1262. to me.

  1263. Good

  1264. not only

  1265. in his

  1266. deity,

  1267. good in

  1268. his death.

  1269. Through

  1270. his death

  1271. he purchased

  1272. me.

  1273. Through

  1274. his death,

  1275. we who

  1276. were dead

  1277. in trespasses

  1278. and sins

  1279. are brought

  1280. into the

  1281. fold.

  1282. Remember those

  1283. words of the

  1284. apostle Paul

  1285. as he writes

  1286. to the

  1287. Ephesians in

  1288. chapter 5

  1289. and verse

  1290. 25.

  1291. Christ

  1292. loved the

  1293. church

  1294. and gave

  1295. himself

  1296. for us.

  1297. We're from

  1298. various nationalities

  1299. this morning,

  1300. various

  1301. backgrounds,

  1302. but we've

  1303. been brought

  1304. together

  1305. to worship

  1306. the King

  1307. of Kings,

  1308. the Lord

  1309. of Lords,

  1310. the great

  1311. shepherd of

  1312. the sheep.

  1313. We've been

  1314. brought

  1315. together.

  1316. Why?

  1317. Because Christ

  1318. has died

  1319. for us

  1320. and risen

  1321. again for

  1322. us.

  1323. We are the

  1324. other sheep

  1325. that have been

  1326. brought into

  1327. the fold.

  1328. What a

  1329. good shepherd

  1330. that he should

  1331. love miserable

  1332. sinners like

  1333. ourselves

  1334. and bring

  1335. us into

  1336. his fold.

  1337. He's good

  1338. in his

  1339. uniqueness.

  1340. Look at

  1341. all the

  1342. religions of

  1343. the world.

  1344. They can

  1345. all be put

  1346. together.

  1347. And all

  1348. of them say

  1349. something like

  1350. this,

  1351. oh yes,

  1352. you need

  1353. faith,

  1354. but you

  1355. also need

  1356. works.

  1357. And if you

  1358. have done

  1359. enough works,

  1360. you may

  1361. or may

  1362. not enter

  1363. into salvation

  1364. because you'll

  1365. never know

  1366. how many

  1367. works you

  1368. have to

  1369. do.

  1370. But our

  1371. good shepherd

  1372. went to

  1373. the cross

  1374. and he

  1375. died

  1376. and he

  1377. cried,

  1378. it is

  1379. finished.

  1380. I've

  1381. paid the

  1382. price once

  1383. and for

  1384. all.

  1385. He saves

  1386. us by

  1387. grace.

  1388. his free

  1389. favor

  1390. lavished

  1391. upon us.

  1392. No other

  1393. religion in

  1394. the world

  1395. says it's

  1396. free.

  1397. It's

  1398. faith plus

  1399. works.

  1400. But

  1401. Christianity

  1402. says,

  1403. trust in

  1404. this Jesus

  1405. who's paid

  1406. the price

  1407. once and

  1408. for all

  1409. and you

  1410. have the

  1411. gift of

  1412. eternal

  1413. life.

  1414. And it

  1415. will show

  1416. itself

  1417. in a

  1418. life of

  1419. good works.

  1420. But not

  1421. only is he

  1422. good in

  1423. these ways,

  1424. he's

  1425. pastorally

  1426. good.

  1427. He's

  1428. pastorally

  1429. good.

  1430. In order

  1431. to get a

  1432. reflection of

  1433. this, look

  1434. at chapter

  1435. 40 of

  1436. Isaiah

  1437. and verse

  1438. 11.

  1439. There's a

  1440. beautiful

  1441. description

  1442. of the

  1443. good shepherd

  1444. there.

  1445. Isaiah

  1446. 40 and

  1447. verse 11.

  1448. He tends

  1449. his flock

  1450. like a

  1451. shepherd.

  1452. He gathers

  1453. the lambs

  1454. in his

  1455. arms and

  1456. carries them

  1457. close to

  1458. his heart.

  1459. He gently

  1460. leads those

  1461. that have

  1462. young.

  1463. What a

  1464. tender

  1465. description

  1466. of the

  1467. good shepherd.

  1468. There's a

  1469. caring here.

  1470. There's a

  1471. pastoral

  1472. concern

  1473. here.

  1474. How can

  1475. a shepherd

  1476. care for

  1477. us?

  1478. Does he

  1479. have that

  1480. power?

  1481. Does he

  1482. have that

  1483. authority?

  1484. Is he

  1485. able to

  1486. do it?

  1487. Well, look

  1488. at the

  1489. context of

  1490. those words

  1491. in Isaiah

  1492. and you

  1493. will come

  1494. to these

  1495. words.

  1496. Who has

  1497. measured the

  1498. waters in

  1499. the hollow

  1500. of his

  1501. hand?

  1502. Or with

  1503. the breadth

  1504. of his

  1505. hand marked

  1506. off the

  1507. heavens?

  1508. Who has

  1509. held the

  1510. dust of

  1511. the earth

  1512. in a

  1513. basket or

  1514. weighed the

  1515. mountains on

  1516. the scales

  1517. and the

  1518. hills in

  1519. a balance?

  1520. Think of

  1521. the creation

  1522. of the

  1523. world.

  1524. That God

  1525. flung stars

  1526. into space.

  1527. That he

  1528. measured the

  1529. waters in

  1530. the hollow

  1531. of his

  1532. hand.

  1533. My friends,

  1534. that's the

  1535. good shepherd

  1536. who holds

  1537. you and

  1538. I.

  1539. He holds

  1540. the world,

  1541. yes, in

  1542. all its

  1543. trouble and

  1544. all its

  1545. anguish,

  1546. but he

  1547. holds you

  1548. and I.

  1549. He tends

  1550. his flock

  1551. like a

  1552. shepherd.

  1553. He gathers

  1554. the lambs in

  1555. his arms and

  1556. claries them

  1557. close to

  1558. his heart.

  1559. He gently

  1560. leads those

  1561. that have

  1562. young.

  1563. And this

  1564. good shepherd

  1565. that is

  1566. described by

  1567. Isaiah is

  1568. the same

  1569. one that is

  1570. brought before

  1571. us in the

  1572. person of the

  1573. Lord Jesus

  1574. Christ who

  1575. speaks to

  1576. his sheep.

  1577. John 10

  1578. and verse

  1579. 3, the

  1580. sheep listen

  1581. to his

  1582. voice.

  1583. Verse 16,

  1584. other sheep,

  1585. they too

  1586. will listen

  1587. to my

  1588. voice.

  1589. He speaks

  1590. to his

  1591. people

  1592. pastorally

  1593. through his

  1594. word.

  1595. He may be

  1596. speaking to

  1597. you and

  1598. reminding you

  1599. of the fact

  1600. that he is

  1601. the good

  1602. shepherd this

  1603. morning.

  1604. He comes

  1605. to you.

  1606. It may be

  1607. through your

  1608. private reading.

  1609. It may be

  1610. through your

  1611. friends.

  1612. It may be

  1613. through the

  1614. promptings of

  1615. his Holy

  1616. Spirit.

  1617. But he

  1618. comes whether

  1619. it be in

  1620. the storms

  1621. of life.

  1622. And he

  1623. says to

  1624. us, I

  1625. am your

  1626. good shepherd.

  1627. Fear

  1628. not.

  1629. And as

  1630. the good

  1631. shepherd,

  1632. he speaks

  1633. to us

  1634. sometimes to

  1635. rebuke us

  1636. because we're

  1637. apt to

  1638. stray.

  1639. But he

  1640. does it

  1641. with love

  1642. and great

  1643. tenderness.

  1644. Why?

  1645. Because he

  1646. is the

  1647. good shepherd.

  1648. He's

  1649. pastorally

  1650. good.

  1651. He speaks

  1652. to us.

  1653. But also

  1654. this good

  1655. shepherd leads

  1656. his sheep.

  1657. Again,

  1658. verse 3,

  1659. he calls

  1660. his own

  1661. sheep by

  1662. name and

  1663. leads them

  1664. out.

  1665. When he

  1666. has brought

  1667. out all

  1668. his own,

  1669. he goes

  1670. on ahead

  1671. of them.

  1672. Was

  1673. Jesus

  1674. himself

  1675. thinking of

  1676. the 23rd

  1677. psalm,

  1678. he leads

  1679. me beside

  1680. still waters.

  1681. He restores

  1682. my soul.

  1683. He guides

  1684. me in

  1685. paths of

  1686. righteousness

  1687. for his

  1688. name's sake.

  1689. Even

  1690. though I

  1691. walk

  1692. through the

  1693. valley of

  1694. the shadow

  1695. of death.

  1696. And that's

  1697. a walk

  1698. that all

  1699. of us

  1700. will have

  1701. to take

  1702. one day

  1703. and we

  1704. do not

  1705. know when

  1706. it will

  1707. come.

  1708. But he

  1709. leads us

  1710. through the

  1711. valley of

  1712. the shadow

  1713. of death.

  1714. Why?

  1715. Because he's

  1716. a good

  1717. shepherd.

  1718. He

  1719. pastorally

  1720. cares for

  1721. us.

  1722. Philip

  1723. Henry,

  1724. who was

  1725. the father

  1726. of Matthew

  1727. Henry,

  1728. the great

  1729. commentator,

  1730. fell in

  1731. love with

  1732. a young

  1733. lady.

  1734. And she

  1735. came from

  1736. a very

  1737. aristocratic

  1738. family.

  1739. And her

  1740. family were

  1741. objecting to

  1742. her going

  1743. with this

  1744. nobody,

  1745. as it

  1746. were,

  1747. this

  1748. nobody

  1749. pastor.

  1750. But what

  1751. did she

  1752. say to

  1753. her parents

  1754. who objected

  1755. to the

  1756. romance?

  1757. She

  1758. said,

  1759. he knows

  1760. where he's

  1761. going and

  1762. I want

  1763. to go

  1764. with him.

  1765. In other

  1766. words, she

  1767. was saying

  1768. that he

  1769. knows that

  1770. he's going

  1771. to heaven

  1772. and I

  1773. want to

  1774. go with

  1775. him.

  1776. The Lord

  1777. Jesus has

  1778. gone to

  1779. prepare a

  1780. place for

  1781. you and

  1782. me, our

  1783. bridegroom.

  1784. We are

  1785. his bride.

  1786. We want

  1787. to go

  1788. with him.

  1789. He leads

  1790. us

  1791. because he

  1792. is the

  1793. good

  1794. shepherd.

  1795. I am

  1796. the good

  1797. shepherd.

  1798. And the

  1799. final thing

  1800. is this,

  1801. that he

  1802. gives us

  1803. fullness of

  1804. life because

  1805. he is the

  1806. good shepherd.

  1807. I have

  1808. come,

  1809. the latter

  1810. part of

  1811. verse 10,

  1812. that they

  1813. might have

  1814. life.

  1815. and that

  1816. they might

  1817. have it

  1818. to the

  1819. full.

  1820. The

  1821. Lord Jesus

  1822. gives us

  1823. security of

  1824. life in

  1825. the here

  1826. and now.

  1827. My

  1828. sheep,

  1829. verse 27,

  1830. listen to

  1831. my voice.

  1832. I know

  1833. them and

  1834. they follow

  1835. me.

  1836. I give

  1837. them eternal

  1838. life and

  1839. they shall

  1840. never perish.

  1841. No one

  1842. can snatch

  1843. them out

  1844. of my

  1845. hand.

  1846. My

  1847. father who

  1848. has given

  1849. them to

  1850. me is

  1851. greater than

  1852. all.

  1853. No one

  1854. can snatch

  1855. them out

  1856. of my

  1857. father's

  1858. hand.

  1859. I and

  1860. my father

  1861. are one.

  1862. I'm not a

  1863. carpenter.

  1864. I'm not very

  1865. good at

  1866. do-it-yourself.

  1867. But I'm

  1868. told that

  1869. sometimes

  1870. carpenters,

  1871. when they're

  1872. hammering in

  1873. the nail,

  1874. maybe in

  1875. a roof

  1876. joist,

  1877. that they

  1878. will knock

  1879. the nail

  1880. through.

  1881. And there

  1882. may be a

  1883. few inches

  1884. exposed at

  1885. the other

  1886. end.

  1887. What they

  1888. do then is

  1889. bang that

  1890. nail into

  1891. the wood.

  1892. They

  1893. clinch it.

  1894. Jesus

  1895. says he's

  1896. laying down

  1897. his life for

  1898. the sheep.

  1899. They will

  1900. never perish

  1901. and no one

  1902. is able to

  1903. pluck them

  1904. out of my

  1905. hand.

  1906. He clinches

  1907. it.

  1908. He

  1909. clinches it.

  1910. You see that?

  1911. He holds us

  1912. secure and

  1913. firm.

  1914. But there's

  1915. more.

  1916. The father

  1917. that has given

  1918. them to me

  1919. is greater

  1920. than all.

  1921. There's a

  1922. nail going

  1923. in.

  1924. He

  1925. clinches it

  1926. and no one

  1927. is able to

  1928. pluck them

  1929. out of my

  1930. father's hand.

  1931. It's though

  1932. we're held

  1933. in a double

  1934. grip.

  1935. The father

  1936. and the son

  1937. who Jesus

  1938. says are

  1939. one.

  1940. He's good

  1941. and we

  1942. should be

  1943. rejoicing.

  1944. He's given

  1945. us fullness

  1946. of life

  1947. and that

  1948. life that

  1949. he gives

  1950. us is

  1951. resurrection

  1952. life.

  1953. He lays

  1954. down his

  1955. life that

  1956. he might

  1957. take it

  1958. again and

  1959. he takes

  1960. it again

  1961. that we

  1962. might enjoy

  1963. his life

  1964. in us.

  1965. I am

  1966. the good

  1967. shepherd.

  1968. Do you

  1969. know him?

  1970. Do you

  1971. love him?

  1972. Are you

  1973. listening to

  1974. his voice?

  1975. Are you

  1976. following him?

  1977. Or will

  1978. you forget

  1979. all about

  1980. it tomorrow?

  1981. My friends,

  1982. I trust

  1983. that you

  1984. know what

  1985. it is

  1986. to be

  1987. in the

  1988. fold.

  1989. But I

  1990. plead with

  1991. you this

  1992. morning.

  1993. If you're

  1994. not in

  1995. the fold,

  1996. then humble

  1997. yourself

  1998. and bow

  1999. the knee

  2000. before the

  2001. good shepherd

  2002. and take

  2003. him as

  2004. your

  2005. savior.

  2006. Let's

  2007. pray together.

  2008. father,

  2009. you know

  2010. all our

  2011. hearts.

  2012. You know

  2013. where each

  2014. of us

  2015. stand here

  2016. this

  2017. morning.

  2018. If we

  2019. know the

  2020. shepherd,

  2021. we pray,

  2022. oh lord,

  2023. that we

  2024. might rejoice

  2025. that we

  2026. know him

  2027. and recognize,

  2028. oh lord,

  2029. our standing

  2030. in him.

  2031. thank you

  2032. for who

  2033. he is.

  2034. Thank you

  2035. for what

  2036. he came

  2037. to do.

  2038. Thank you

  2039. for his

  2040. uniqueness.

  2041. Thank you

  2042. for his

  2043. pastoral

  2044. care.

  2045. If we

  2046. don't know

  2047. him,

  2048. we pray,

  2049. oh lord,

  2050. that you

  2051. will speak

  2052. to us
