  1. How many followers of Jesus do you think there are in the world today? At a guess, how many

  2. would you say? Well, according to the most recent figures, which have been published by

  3. Operation World in their book, the figures, and these are their statistics, are there are 546 million

  4. people. That's about 10% of the world's population are active disciples of Jesus Christ. It's staggering.

  5. The growth has been amazing. In China, over 10,000 people repent and turn to Christ every single day.

  6. In Kenya, almost 50% of the population are committed followers of Jesus. The highest rate of growth in the

  7. world today, not with the highest number, but the highest rate of growth is in Iran and Afghanistan,

  8. where persecution is at its worst. But it's not just other parts of the world. Ireland has also

  9. seen growth. 70,000 people, that's about 1% of the population, have turned to Jesus as their Lord

  10. and Saviour. It's incredible. Now, why is this? Well, it's all because of Jesus' promise to his disciples

  11. over 2,000 years ago. Listen to this promise. It's in verse 16. You did not choose me, but I chose you

  12. and appointed you to go and bear fruit, fruit that will last. That promise has been taking effect ever

  13. since, as disciples of Jesus around the world have taken his word seriously.

  14. Now in John's Gospel chapters 13 to 17, we have what commentators call the last discourse.

  15. It's the last few days of Jesus before his death, which he spends with his disciples. They chat, they have meals together.

  16. It's a very intimate and close time. It's just Jesus and his disciples. And throughout, Jesus is preparing his disciples

  17. for his going back to the Father. But as Jesus is going back to the Father, so he sends his people out. As Jesus leaves the world,

  18. the disciples begin to move out into the world. We see this at the very beginning and the end of this section. So in chapter 13,

  19. verse 20, Jesus says, I tell you the truth, whoever accepts anyone I send accepts me, and whoever accepts me accepts the one who sent me.

  20. And we see the same in chapter 17, verse 18. As you sent me into the world, I have sent them into the world.

  21. So there's this movement taking place. Jesus going, Jesus leaving, but the disciples going and being sent.

  22. And in chapter 15, at the very centre of this conversation, Jesus makes it crystal clear.

  23. Chapter 15, verse 8. This is to my Father's glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.

  24. Jesus sends out his church to be fruitful. That people within our communities and all around the world would believe and trust in Christ.

  25. That's the fruit that Jesus is looking for. And that's the fruit that he has promised. People who will follow him.

  26. Now to help us understand what Jesus is saying, he uses three horticultural metaphors to explain it all.

  27. The first is the vine. In verse 1. I am the true vine. Jesus is the vine. That's the first metaphor.

  28. Then also in verse 1. We have the gardener. I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener.

  29. So Jesus the vine, the Father, the gardener. And then down at verse 5.

  30. I am the vine, says Jesus, and you are the branches. The church are the branches in the vine.

  31. Now we're going to look at these three metaphors and see how we can go and bear fruit. Fruit that will last.

  32. First then, the vine, which is all about expanding mission.

  33. Jesus identifies himself very clearly as being the vine. Look at verse 1.

  34. I am the true vine. And verse 5. I am the vine.

  35. Now when we think of vine, don't think wine and all types of grapes.

  36. Think mission.

  37. Vine equals mission.

  38. To see this, have a look back at Isaiah chapter 5.

    Isaiah 5 chapter mention

  39. Isaiah chapter 5, starting at verse 1.

    Isaiah 5 chapter mention

  40. This is a picture of a vineyard.

  41. I will sing for the one I love a song about his vineyard.

  42. My loved one had a vineyard on a fertile hillside.

  43. He dug it up and cleared it of stones and planted it with the choicest of vines.

  44. Well, who is this vine?

  45. Well, we're told down at verse 7.

  46. The vineyard of the Lord Almighty is the house of Israel and the people of Judah.

  47. So the vineyard is God's people.

  48. And what's the purpose of this vine?

  49. Well, go back up to the rest of verse 2.

  50. He built a watchtower around it.

  51. Cut out a winepress as well.

  52. Then he looked for a good crop of grapes.

  53. But it yielded only bad fruit.

  54. God had rescued Israel from Egypt, from their slavery.

  55. He had taken them out of there.

  56. And now he had planted them amongst the nations in a new land, a fertile land.

  57. So as to bring his salvation to others.

  58. They would be the means of bringing others, other nations, other peoples into that relationship with God.

  59. But they bought only bad fruit.

  60. Look at the end of verse 7.

  61. He looked for justice, but saw bloodshed.

  62. He looked for righteousness, but he heard cries of distress.

  63. And in response, God judged the vine.

  64. Look at verse 4.

  65. What more could have been done for my vineyard than I have done for it?

  66. When I looked for good grapes, why did it yield only bad?

  67. Now I will tell you what I am going to do to my vineyard.

  68. I will take away its hedge and it will be destroyed.

  69. I will break down its walls and it will be trampled.

  70. I will make it a wasteland neither pruned nor cultivated.

  71. And briars and thorns will grow there.

  72. I will command the clouds not to rain on it.

  73. A judgment of God upon his people.

  74. Because they fail to be the fruit-bearing vine that he had called them to be.

  75. Now it seems from this that the vine, the vineyard, has been a failure.

  76. But God doesn't give up on his promise to reach the nations and bring his salvation.

  77. Flick on to Isaiah chapter 27.

    Isaiah 27 chapter mention

  78. Because here we see a further promise.

  79. We could go to many different places, but this one I think helps sums it up.

  80. Isaiah 27 verse 2.

    Isaiah 27:2

  81. Here is a promise of restoration.

  82. In that day, verse 2, sing about a fruitful vineyard.

  83. I, the Lord, watch over it.

  84. I water it continually.

  85. I guard it day and night so that no one may harm it.

  86. And verse 6.

  87. In days to come, Jacob, that's the people of Israel, will take root.

  88. Israel, my people, will bud and blossom and fill all the world with fruit.

  89. It's a wonderful picture of this vineyard spreading out its branches into all the world so that it bears fruit.

  90. Now that promise became a reality with the coming of Jesus.

  91. Jesus said, I am the true vine.

  92. Jesus came as the true vine sent by God and planted in the world.

  93. He came to replace or fulfil what Israel were meant to be.

  94. Now when we say Jesus has replaced Israel, it's not more of the same.

  95. It's completely different.

  96. Jesus is everything that Israel were not.

  97. Israel had been sent into the nations.

  98. They were planted there.

  99. They were to be a blessing to the others.

  100. But they had failed.

  101. Rather than lead people to God, they turned people away from God.

  102. And in contrast, Jesus the vine was sent into the world.

  103. Jesus came to die for us.

  104. And through his death, the way is now open for people from every race and every culture and every background, whoever they are,

  105. to receive the blessings of God, to receive forgiveness for all of their sin,

  106. to find peace with God and the hope of eternity with him.

  107. So Jesus comes as the true vine planted in the world,

  108. welcoming all who will come to him to find the new and eternal life.

  109. Jesus as the true vine comes into the world and he expands the mission of God out to the world and to the nations.

  110. So that is the true vine, the first metaphor.

  111. The second metaphor is of the gardener working among the vine.

  112. We can picture the gardener coming along, walking down through the vineyard and cutting and snipping away.

  113. That's what we have in verse 2.

  114. The Father cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit,

  115. while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful.

  116. Now can you see how all of this relates to us?

  117. Remember in verse 5 it says,

  118. We are the branches.

  119. The Father is the gardener, walking amongst his people.

  120. He's working in us.

  121. And it seems he has two roles, which is all about producing more fruit.

  122. First he is a negative one.

  123. He cuts off.

  124. Look at verse 2 again.

  125. He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit.

  126. If we want to see growth and we want to see fruit,

  127. then all the useless parts must be cut off and cleared away.

  128. Any gardener will tell you that.

  129. In winter and in spring all the dead branches,

  130. the ones without any life,

  131. are simply cut away, gathered, taken off,

  132. and then thrown away.

  133. The image is repeated for us in verse 6.

  134. If anyone does not remain in me,

  135. he is like a branch that is thrown away and withers.

  136. Such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire, and burned.

  137. Now it's quite a stark picture,

  138. but it's a very clear picture of what God will do

  139. with those who claim to be followers of Jesus,

  140. but are actually not.

  141. Now within this context here,

  142. the obvious example is Judas.

  143. Look back at chapter 13.

  144. He claimed to be a follower of Jesus.

  145. Chapter 13, verse 20.

  146. I tell you the truth,

  147. whoever accepts anyone I send accepts me,

  148. and whoever accepts me

  149. accepts the one who sent me.

  150. After he had said this,

  151. Jesus was troubled in spirit and testified,

  152. I tell you the truth,

  153. one of you is going to betray me.

  154. Down to verse 26.

  155. Jesus answered,

  156. It is the one to whom I will give this piece of bread

  157. when I have dipped it in the dish.

  158. Then dipping the piece of bread,

  159. he gave it to Judas Iscariot, son of Simon.

  160. As soon as Judas took the bread,

  161. Satan entered into him.

  162. What you are about to do,

  163. do quickly,

  164. Jesus told him.

  165. You see,

  166. Judas looked like a believer.

  167. He had been with Jesus for the last few years.

  168. He had been with the rest of the disciples.

  169. He read his Bible.

  170. He went to church like the rest of them.

  171. He did all kinds of good things.

  172. And they all thought he was a true disciple.

  173. But God knew his true heart.

  174. It was like he was cut away from the vine.

  175. Now this, of course,

  176. raises a very big question for us.

  177. Which is simply this.

  178. Can people who say they are Christians

  179. fall away from God?

  180. Can I be a Christian this year

  181. and then next year not be a Christian?

  182. Well, this cutting off

  183. is not meant to cause us doubt.

  184. Remember what Jesus has already said

  185. back in chapter 10

  186. verse 20

  187. Sorry, John chapter 10 verse 28

    John 10:28

  188. Jesus says,

  189. I give them eternal life

  190. and they shall never perish.

  191. No one can snatch them out of my hand.

  192. My Father who has given them to me

  193. is greater than all.

  194. No one can snatch them out of my Father's hand.

  195. You see there, it's quite clear, isn't it?

  196. Jesus gives eternal life

  197. and he will keep those

  198. who he gives eternal life to.

  199. Nobody can take them away.

  200. They can't fall away.

  201. He will keep them.

  202. So the purpose of John chapter 15

    John 15 chapter mention

  203. is not to cause us doubt

  204. and wonder,

  205. I wonder if I'm going to fall away as a Christian.

  206. But to remind us

  207. that all true disciples

  208. bear fruit.

  209. You can't be a disciple,

  210. you can't claim to be a disciple

  211. and not bear fruit.

  212. It's two sides of the one coin.

  213. Disciple and fruit.

  214. You can't have one without the other.

  215. As it says in 15 verse 8

  216. This is to my Father's glory

  217. that you bear much fruit

  218. showing yourselves

  219. to be my disciples.

  220. So if you have trusted Christ

  221. and you are following him

  222. the promise is

  223. people will come to Christ

  224. people will trust Christ

  225. because of you.

  226. We'll come back to that

  227. in a little while.

  228. But that's the first rule.

  229. He cuts away.

  230. It's a negative one.

  231. Then there's a positive one.

  232. Look at the rest of verse 2.

  233. He cuts off every branch

  234. in me that bears no fruit

  235. and while every branch

  236. that does bear fruit

  237. he prunes

  238. so that it will be

  239. even more fruitful.

  240. Now being fruitful

  241. is not about perfection.

  242. He doesn't call us

  243. to be perfect.

  244. It's about pruning.

  245. And again

  246. the imagery is striking.

  247. Where the gardener

  248. sees life

  249. where he sees

  250. bunches of grapes

  251. where he sees

  252. a lot happening

  253. he works on it

  254. even more.

  255. He cuts it back.

  256. He snips away

  257. all the bits

  258. that are no good.

  259. He cuts it back

  260. so that it will be

  261. more fruitful.

  262. But notice how he does it.

  263. Verse 3.

  264. You are already clean

  265. because of the word

  266. that I have spoken to you.

  267. The word of Christ

  268. has already cleaned

  269. the disciples.

  270. We'll come back to that

  271. in a minute.

  272. But that's what the word does.

  273. It cleans us.

  274. The gospel has taken effect

  275. in their lives.

  276. But it doesn't stop there.

  277. God's word also

  278. has a pruning effect

  279. in our lives.

  280. We see this in

  281. chapter 17

  282. verse 17.

  283. John 17

    John 17:17

  284. verse 17

  285. it says

  286. sanctify them.

  287. That word means

  288. to make holy

  289. to set apart

  290. to purify.

  291. So he says

  292. sanctify them

  293. by the truth.

  294. Your word

  295. is truth.

  296. You see

  297. God's word

  298. not just

  299. cleans us

  300. and makes it right

  301. with God

  302. but it goes on

  303. working in us

  304. cleaning us

  305. pruning us

  306. purifying us.

  307. God's word

  308. works in our life

  309. taking away

  310. the bits

  311. that are useless

  312. the bits

  313. that are no good

  314. so that we

  315. become more

  316. like Christ

  317. so that we

  318. become more

  319. fruitful.

  320. So if we want

  321. to see more

  322. fruit in our lives

  323. if we want

  324. to see more

  325. people come

  326. to Christ

  327. then we must

  328. be people

  329. who take

  330. God's word

  331. seriously.

  332. It's not just

  333. something we turn

  334. to in a time

  335. of trouble

  336. or just on a

  337. Sunday.

  338. It's got to be

  339. part of our

  340. appetite

  341. part of our

  342. diet

  343. every day.

  344. of course

  345. pruning is

  346. painful

  347. isn't it?

  348. If you could

  349. ask a branch

  350. what it's like

  351. when they get

  352. cut

  353. it's painful

  354. and so it

  355. is

  356. when God's

  357. word takes

  358. effect in our

  359. life

  360. nobody likes

  361. the spirit

  362. of God

  363. showing us

  364. through his

  365. word

  366. the areas

  367. of our lives

  368. that need

  369. cleaned up

  370. and cut

  371. off.

  372. It's not

  373. nice to be

  374. shown things

  375. that are wrong

  376. and how we

  377. should be

  378. but as the

  379. word of God

  380. takes effect

  381. in our lives

  382. the positive

  383. is that he

  384. is changing

  385. us and

  386. transforming

  387. us so

  388. that we

  389. can become

  390. more fruitful.

  391. So the

  392. father comes

  393. as the

  394. gardener

  395. walking

  396. amongst his

  397. vine

  398. walking

  399. amongst his

  400. people

  401. cutting off

  402. those who

  403. do not

  404. bear fruit

  405. because they

  406. are not

  407. true disciples.

  408. and pruning

  409. those who

  410. are fruitful

  411. so that

  412. they can

  413. be even

  414. more fruitful.

  415. So we

  416. have the

  417. vine

  418. we have

  419. the

  420. gardener

  421. and the

  422. last metaphor

  423. is that

  424. of the

  425. branches.

  426. Look at

  427. verse 5

  428. Jesus says

  429. I am

  430. the vine

  431. and you

  432. are the

  433. branches.

  434. Now while

  435. the branches

  436. are important

  437. they must

  438. be seen

  439. in relation

  440. to the

  441. vine.

  442. they're

  443. connected

  444. and first

  445. we must

  446. see that

  447. we the

  448. branches are

  449. connected

  450. through Christ.

  451. Jesus as

  452. we've seen

  453. is the

  454. true vine.

  455. He has

  456. replaced the

  457. old.

  458. So it's

  459. our response

  460. to Jesus

  461. that determines

  462. whether we are

  463. actually connected

  464. to the vine.

  465. We have to

  466. ask that

  467. question am I

  468. in the vine

  469. or am I

  470. not?

  471. What's my

  472. response to

  473. Jesus?

  474. And how

  475. can I be

  476. in the vine?

  477. Well look

  478. at verse 3

  479. You are

  480. already

  481. clean because

  482. of the

  483. word I

  484. have spoken

  485. to you.

  486. It's the

  487. word of

  488. God that

  489. cleans us

  490. that makes

  491. us acceptable

  492. to God

  493. that makes

  494. us part

  495. of the vine.

  496. Let's have

  497. a look at

  498. this in

  499. more detail

  500. go back

  501. to chapter

  502. 13

  503. verse 6

  504. You see

  505. this whole

  506. section

  507. 13 to

  508. 17

  509. is all

  510. intertwined

  511. chapter 13

  512. verse 6

  513. This is at

  514. the Passover

  515. meal

  516. and they're

  517. just about

  518. to sit down

  519. and have

  520. dinner together

  521. and as was

  522. custom

  523. after their

  524. walk and

  525. their dirty

  526. feet they

  527. would be

  528. washed.

  529. So Jesus

  530. came

  531. verse 6

  532. to Simon

  533. Peter

  534. who said

  535. to him

  536. Lord are

  537. you going

  538. to wash

  539. my feet?

  540. Jesus

  541. replied

  542. You do

  543. not realise

  544. now what

  545. I am doing

  546. but later

  547. you will

  548. understand.

  549. No said

  550. Peter

  551. you shall

  552. never wash

  553. my feet.

  554. Jesus

  555. answered

  556. Unless I

  557. wash you

  558. you have

  559. no part

  560. with me.

  561. Then Lord

  562. Simon Peter

  563. replied

  564. not just

  565. my feet

  566. and my

  567. hands

  568. but my

  569. head

  570. as well.

  571. Jesus

  572. answered

  573. A person

  574. who has

  575. had a

  576. bath

  577. needs

  578. only

  579. to wash

  580. his feet

  581. his whole

  582. body

  583. is clean.

  584. Of course

  585. Jesus

  586. didn't mean

  587. here a

  588. physical

  589. cleaning.

  590. As he

  591. said

  592. it wasn't

  593. about

  594. having a

  595. bath

  596. or a

  597. shower.

  598. He was

  599. talking about

  600. being

  601. spiritually

  602. clean.

  603. And the

  604. cleaning

  605. that Jesus

  606. would do

  607. would happen

  608. when he

  609. goes to

  610. the cross

  611. where he

  612. would clean

  613. them of

  614. their sin.

  615. He would

  616. take their

  617. sin,

  618. their failure

  619. upon himself

  620. and he

  621. would take

  622. the blame

  623. for that.

  624. And through

  625. trust in him

  626. we could be

  627. clean.

  628. So it's

  629. how we

  630. respond to

  631. Jesus and

  632. his death

  633. for us

  634. that determines

  635. whether we are

  636. connected to

  637. Christ.

  638. Those who

  639. trust Christ,

  640. those who

  641. look to him

  642. for that

  643. cleaning,

  644. that inner

  645. cleaning,

  646. are connected

  647. to the

  648. vine.

  649. They become

  650. the branches.

  651. They are

  652. like grafted

  653. in.

  654. So we are

  655. connected

  656. through Christ.

  657. Now the

  658. purpose of

  659. being connected

  660. to the vine

  661. is fruitfulness.

  662. So the

  663. question we

  664. need to ask

  665. is, well

  666. how can we

  667. be fruitful

  668. if we're

  669. branches in

  670. the vine

  671. how can

  672. we bring

  673. about fruit?

  674. Well fruit

  675. bearing is

  676. ultimately the

  677. responsibility and

  678. work of

  679. Jesus.

  680. It's not

  681. us.

  682. Look at

  683. verse 4

  684. chapter 15.

  685. Remain in

  686. me and I

  687. will remain

  688. in you.

  689. No branch

  690. can bear

  691. fruit by

  692. itself.

  693. It must

  694. remain in

  695. the vine.

  696. Neither can

  697. you bear

  698. fruit unless

  699. you remain

  700. in me.

  701. I am

  702. the vine,

  703. you are

  704. the branches.

  705. If a

  706. person remains

  707. in me and

  708. I in him,

  709. you will

  710. bear much

  711. fruit.

  712. apart from

  713. me you

  714. can do

  715. nothing.

  716. Now we

  717. don't need

  718. to know

  719. anything about

  720. gardening to

  721. get the

  722. point here.

  723. A branch

  724. that is

  725. connected to

  726. the vine

  727. will be

  728. fruitful,

  729. but a

  730. branch that

  731. is disconnected

  732. will be

  733. fruitless.

  734. Look what it

  735. says in

  736. verse 4.

  737. No branch

  738. can bear

  739. fruit by

  740. itself.

  741. End of

  742. verse 5.

  743. Apart from

  744. me you

  745. can do

  746. nothing.

  747. vine.

  748. In

  749. other

  750. words,

  751. it's

  752. the vine

  753. that

  754. produces

  755. the fruit.

  756. That's

  757. where the

  758. life comes

  759. from.

  760. It comes

  761. from the

  762. vine,

  763. from the

  764. main part.

  765. The

  766. source of

  767. life is

  768. Christ.

  769. He is

  770. the one

  771. who brings

  772. salvation

  773. into people's

  774. lives.

  775. It flows

  776. out through

  777. the branches

  778. to others,

  779. but it

  780. comes from

  781. Christ.

  782. So is

  783. that it?

  784. What do

  785. we do?

  786. If Christ

  787. is the

  788. one who

  789. does it

  790. all,

  791. what do

  792. I do?

  793. Well,

  794. again,

  795. we can't

  796. miss the

  797. point in

  798. these verses.

  799. Look at

  800. verse 4.

  801. It says,

  802. remain in

  803. me.

  804. Remain in

  805. the vine.

  806. It's

  807. repeated over

  808. and over.

  809. It's vital

  810. that we

  811. remain close

  812. and intimate

  813. in our

  814. relationship

  815. with Christ.

  816. And how

  817. do we do

  818. that?

  819. Well,

  820. we have a

  821. clue,

  822. don't we,

  823. in verse 7.

  824. if you

  825. remain in

  826. me and

  827. my words

  828. remain in

  829. you.

  830. You see,

  831. there's the

  832. clue to

  833. remaining

  834. in Christ

  835. is connected

  836. with remaining

  837. or being

  838. dependent upon

  839. his word.

  840. If you

  841. like,

  842. God's word

  843. is the

  844. nutrients,

  845. the

  846. fertilizer

  847. that will

  848. cause us

  849. to grow

  850. and be

  851. fruitful.

  852. Just like

  853. a gardener

  854. will put

  855. down all

  856. kinds of

  857. compost to

  858. make his

  859. garden grow,

  860. so the

  861. word is

  862. the nutrients

  863. that will

  864. help us

  865. to grow.

  866. And so

  867. if we

  868. remain,

  869. if we

  870. stay close

  871. to Christ,

  872. if we

  873. are taking

  874. him,

  875. absorbing

  876. him,

  877. we will

  878. bear fruit.

  879. In fact,

  880. there's a

  881. promise.

  882. If we're

  883. remaining in

  884. Christ,

  885. we can

  886. pray to

  887. God for

  888. people to

  889. come to

  890. Christ.

  891. Look at

  892. verse 7.

  893. If you

  894. remain in

  895. me,

  896. and my

  897. words remain

  898. in me,

  899. you,

  900. ask whatever

  901. you wish,

  902. and it

  903. will be

  904. given you.

  905. The

  906. whatever you

  907. wish here

  908. doesn't

  909. mean,

  910. well,

  911. I can

  912. ask for

  913. a car

  914. or for

  915. a new

  916. job.

  917. We can

  918. ask for

  919. those things,

  920. but it's

  921. not guaranteed.

  922. He's not

  923. saying,

  924. you know,

  925. whatever you

  926. like.

  927. No,

  928. the whatever

  929. you wish

  930. has to

  931. be related

  932. to the

  933. fruit that

  934. Jesus has

  935. promised.

  936. In

  937. prayer,

  938. we ask

  939. God to

  940. work through

  941. us so that

  942. people will

  943. come to

  944. Christ.

  945. it's the

  946. same in

  947. verse 16,

  948. where he

  949. tells them

  950. to go and

  951. bear fruit,

  952. fruitful last.

  953. That will

  954. last.

  955. Then the

  956. Father will

  957. give you

  958. whatever you

  959. ask in

  960. my name.

  961. It's about

  962. fruit.

  963. That's the

  964. promise.

  965. Ask him

  966. to work in

  967. people's

  968. lives,

  969. and God

  970. will do

  971. it.

  972. The

  973. church

  974. around the

  975. world

  976. has seen

  977. huge growth.

  978. We saw

  979. that at the

  980. beginning from

  981. just a few

  982. people who

  983. are following

  984. him.

  985. At his

  986. death,

  987. they all

  988. deserted.

  989. Whereas

  990. today,

  991. 546

  992. million people

  993. around the

  994. world,

  995. such huge

  996. growth.

  997. Disciples

  998. are and

  999. have been

  1000. through the

  1001. centuries

  1002. bearing fruit

  1003. as he

  1004. promised.

  1005. But as

  1006. encouraging as

  1007. that is,

  1008. over 60%

  1009. of the

  1010. world's

  1011. population

  1012. has never

  1013. been introduced

  1014. to Jesus

  1015. Christ.

  1016. Not that

  1017. they've heard

  1018. and not

  1019. responded.

  1020. They have

  1021. never been

  1022. introduced.

  1023. They don't

  1024. know anything

  1025. about him.

  1026. In

  1027. Ireland,

  1028. while

  1029. thousands

  1030. have turned

  1031. to Christ,

  1032. we can

  1033. say that

  1034. millions

  1035. have not

  1036. yet

  1037. turned to

  1038. Christ.

  1039. And

  1040. closer to

  1041. home,

  1042. we have

  1043. friends,

  1044. don't we?

  1045. People

  1046. within our

  1047. family who

  1048. are not

  1049. yet

  1050. disciples

  1051. and

  1052. followers

  1053. of

  1054. Jesus.

  1055. What's

  1056. going to

  1057. happen?

  1058. Well,

  1059. we have

  1060. been sent

  1061. by Jesus.

  1062. We have

  1063. been planted

  1064. out into

  1065. the community.

  1066. We are the

  1067. branches that

  1068. are spreading

  1069. out into

  1070. the vine

  1071. in all the

  1072. different

  1073. places where

  1074. we are,

  1075. our work,

  1076. our neighbourhoods,

  1077. the families

  1078. where we are.

  1079. We are

  1080. branching

  1081. out.

  1082. We have a

  1083. purpose where

  1084. we have been

  1085. sent.

  1086. And with

  1087. that purpose

  1088. comes a

  1089. promise.

  1090. It's not

  1091. a mistake

  1092. where each

  1093. one of us

  1094. are planted.

  1095. And here's

  1096. the promise,

  1097. verse 16,

  1098. you did

  1099. not choose

  1100. me,

  1101. but I

  1102. chose you

  1103. and I

  1104. appointed you

  1105. to go

  1106. and bear

  1107. fruit,

  1108. fruit

  1109. that

  1110. will

  1111. last.

  1112. That's the

  1113. promise that

  1114. each one of

  1115. us has

  1116. wherever we

  1117. are.

  1118. This is

  1119. ultimately

  1120. God's

  1121. mission.

  1122. this is

  1123. his

  1124. work.

  1125. But yet

  1126. he works

  1127. through people

  1128. like you

  1129. and me

  1130. with all

  1131. our ups

  1132. and downs

  1133. and our

  1134. failures

  1135. and all

  1136. our

  1137. difficulties.

  1138. And he

  1139. will work

  1140. through us

  1141. to bring

  1142. about that

  1143. fruit.

  1144. But yet

  1145. he calls

  1146. us to

  1147. remain in

  1148. him,

  1149. to stay

  1150. close to

  1151. him,

  1152. to follow

  1153. him,

  1154. to obey

  1155. him,

  1156. to absorb

  1157. through our

  1158. roots the

  1159. very nutrients,

  1160. the words

  1161. of God,

  1162. so that

  1163. we become

  1164. more like

  1165. Christ,

  1166. so that

  1167. more fruit

  1168. will come.

  1169. We

  1170. mightn't

  1171. see it

  1172. for ourselves.

  1173. We

  1174. might not

  1175. even see

  1176. it in

  1177. our own

  1178. lifetime.

  1179. That's

  1180. the way

  1181. God works

  1182. at times.

  1183. But the

  1184. promise

  1185. remains

  1186. true.

  1187. I

  1188. chose

  1189. you,

  1190. I

  1191. appointed

  1192. you,

  1193. I've

  1194. cleaned

  1195. you,

  1196. I'm

  1197. pruning

  1198. you,

  1199. to go

  1200. and bear

  1201. fruit,

  1202. fruit that

  1203. will last.

  1204. So let's

  1205. go,

  1206. let's

  1207. be sent,

  1208. and as

  1209. we go,

  1210. be full

  1211. of confidence

  1212. that we

  1213. will bear

  1214. fruit,

  1215. fruit that

  1216. will last.

  1217. well,

  1218. and as

  1219. we're

  1220. and so

  1221. are

  1222. Thank you.
