  1. Thanks. Oh, dear me. Turn me down quickly, Joe. Far too echoey. There we go. Well, thanks

  2. very much, Ralph, for leading this morning, and thank you, Ian, for reading. As you can

  3. see there, we've finished our studies in John, looking at the I Ams. We're going right the

  4. way back into the Old Testament, and we're going to be going through Joshua over the next

  5. few weeks. I don't know how you feel about going into the Old Testament. As I looked at

  6. my Bible on Monday morning, I thought to myself, why on earth didn't you just stay in John?

  7. It's a little bit easier than going back to the Old Testament. Sure, it's boring, and

  8. it's just full of history. Well, I'm hoping not to make it boring, but exciting, and it's

  9. not just history. It's a story about Jesus. Even in the Old Testament, it's a story about

  10. Jesus. That's what we're going to discover this morning. Let's pray together as we ask

  11. for God's help. Our Father God, we thank you so much for these wonderful true stories

  12. in the Bible. Although written hundreds and thousands of years ago, although they happened

  13. so long ago, we thank you that they are there for us, written to tell us something about

  14. how great God is, to tell us about his promises, and to tell us ultimately about his Son, the

  15. Lord Jesus. Please help us to understand your Word to us. May it encourage us, build us up,

  16. and above all, may it cause us to be people who trust you, the God who makes promises, and

  17. the God who keeps his promise. So please help us all this morning. In Jesus' name. Amen.

  18. There was pens and notes going around. They've all gone, have they? Okay. So you can use the

  19. back of your news sheet if you want to, and please do come back to me if there's any questions

  20. later on.

  21. Well, it's been hailed as Barack Obama's finest moment since he took office. Last Sunday evening,

  22. as I'm sure you saw in the news, he gave the order for US Special Service Unit to attack

  23. the residents of Osama bin Laden. After months of surveillance and intelligence gathering,

  24. bin Laden was finally shot, killed, and then buried at sea. The man behind the 9-11 attacks

  25. in New York and the 7-7 bombings in London has finally been found and removed. Now, when

  26. Obama took office, he promised the world that he would make it a safer place. Top of his priority

  27. was finding Osama bin Laden. He promised that no stone would be left unturned until those behind

  28. the attacks were defeated. But now that bin Laden has been killed, I wonder, is the world

  29. any safer?

  30. Of course, Barack Obama's not the only one to make such promises. Political leaders in

  31. our own country have made similar statements. They vowed to end all sectarian violence and

  32. acts of terrorism. But I think it's very clear that the promises that our world leaders make,

  33. despite their best efforts, are never truly realised. The world is still very broken. There is an unrest

  34. that hangs over us all like a dark cloud. The safer world that we all want is still being sought for.

  35. Of course, presidents are not alone in making their promises. God has promised to restore and to renew

  36. this broken world and to bring about an everlasting rest. But again, as we look around the world in which

  37. we live, it seems that God's promises are no better. It's still a very broken world.

  38. So the big question we want to ask as we get stuck into Joshua is this. Can we trust the God of the Bible

  39. who makes such big and grand promises? Can we trust him?

  40. Well, the book of Joshua is here to give us confidence and assurance that God will do what he said he will do.

  41. Let's see how all of this is worked out. Let's meet the promise maker.

  42. Look at verse 2.

  43. Now this promise, which is restated here, given to Joshua, was given to Moses,

  44. but it was first given to Abraham way back at the beginning of the Bible story in Genesis 12.

  45. In Genesis 12, God promised Abraham that he would build a great nation, a big community,

  46. that they would have their own land and they would be blessed.

  47. And as the years have passed, God kept repeating that same promise

  48. to each new generation and to each new people.

  49. He kept giving a new promise. He gave it to Isaac and then on to his grandson.

  50. Listen to what Jacob says to his son.

  51. It comes from Genesis 48.

  52. Jacob said to Joseph,

  53. God Almighty has appeared to me

  54. And they said to me,

  55. I am going to make you fruitful and will increase your numbers.

  56. I will make you a community of peoples and I will give you this land as an everlasting possession to your descendants after you.

  57. So God has said he's going to gather together a people that belong to him

  58. and they would have their own place in which they can live with God and be blessed.

  59. Now when God made that first promise in Genesis 12,

  60. now we're in Joshua,

  61. 600 years have passed.

  62. They've become a great people.

  63. Someone's worked out there was about 3 million of them at this stage.

  64. But they're still wandering around the desert,

  65. still without any place to live,

  66. no land of their own and without any sign of blessing.

  67. Has God forgotten his promise?

  68. Added to that, we're told in verse 1 that Moses, their great leader, is dead.

  69. He was the one who had rescued them from slavery,

  70. brought them out of Egypt,

  71. he'd performed miraculous signs,

  72. he'd showed great power,

  73. he'd done it for over 40 years,

  74. and if anybody was going to bring about God's promises,

  75. surely it would be Moses.

  76. But we're told right at the beginning,

  77. Moses dead.

  78. It seems like God's promises are all set to fail.

  79. But in this first chapter,

  80. God is reminding us who he is.

  81. He is the promise maker.

  82. He is the one who is in control.

  83. He is telling us,

  84. the years may pass,

  85. leaders may come and go,

  86. but God's promise will remain firmly on track.

  87. No one and nothing can hinder or stop what God has promised to do.

  88. Look at verse 3 again.

  89. He says,

  90. I will give you every place where you set your foot,

  91. as I promised Moses.

  92. But what is that promise?

  93. Yes, it was a promise of land,

  94. but what exactly was it?

  95. Well, look at verse 4.

  96. He says,

  97. Your territory will extend from the desert,

  98. which was way down in the south,

  99. right up to Lebanon in the north,

  100. and from the great river, the Euphrates,

  101. which was right over on the east,

  102. all the Hittite country in between,

  103. right across to the great sea,

  104. the Mediterranean,

  105. which was on the west.

  106. It was a huge land.

  107. I pulled out my Bible atlas

  108. and got my ruler out and tried to measure it.

  109. It's about 500 by 800 miles.

  110. It was huge.

  111. It was a prosperous land.

  112. You could imagine the sunny shores of the Mediterranean.

  113. Think of all those luscious grapes growing.

  114. The fine wines they would enjoy.

  115. The fertile plains of the Euphrates,

  116. where land would grow and cattle would graze.

  117. People call this land the land flowing with milk and honey.

  118. So rich was its produce.

  119. But this land was ultimately going to be a place of rest.

  120. Look at verse 13.

  121. Remember the command that Moses, the servant of the Lord, gave you.

  122. The Lord, your God,

  123. is giving you rest

  124. and has granted you this land.

  125. It's repeated again for us at the end of verse 14.

  126. You are to help your brothers

  127. until the Lord gives them rest

  128. as He has done for you.

  129. Of course, this promised rest

  130. had been experienced once before.

  131. We've come across it in the Bible story

  132. right at the very beginning

  133. in the Garden of Eden.

  134. God had been busy creating the world

  135. over the first six days

  136. and then on the seventh day, what did He do?

  137. He rested.

  138. This was a place where God's people

  139. would live and enjoy intimacy with God.

  140. All of creation was in perfect harmony,

  141. a place of beauty.

  142. It was paradise.

  143. The Garden of Eden was the perfect rest.

  144. And now in keeping with His promise,

  145. since the world had been cursed,

  146. God was saying,

  147. I am going to bring that rest again.

  148. I am going to provide a place

  149. for my people

  150. where they can enjoy rest,

  151. peace and prosperity.

  152. Just like it was

  153. way back in the Garden of Eden.

  154. So God again

  155. would bring His people together

  156. so that they could enjoy rest

  157. in the new garden,

  158. the promised lands.

  159. Did God do what He said

  160. He would do?

  161. Well, look at chapter 21 of Joshua.

  162. This is a key passage.

  163. It's like the big theme,

  164. the theme tune

  165. of the whole book.

  166. Joshua chapter 21,

    Joshua 21:43

  167. verse 43.

  168. Verse 43.

  169. Verse 43.

  170. Joshua 21,

    Joshua 21:43

  171. verse 43.

  172. So the Lord gave Israel

  173. all the land

  174. He had promised

  175. to give their forefathers,

  176. and they took possession of it,

  177. and they settled there.

  178. The Lord gave them

  179. rest

  180. on every side,

  181. just as He had promised

  182. to their forefathers.

  183. Verse 45.

  184. Not one

  185. of all the Lord's

  186. good promises

  187. to the house of Israel

  188. failed.

  189. Every one

  190. was fulfilled.

  191. You see,

  192. God

  193. is the promise maker.

  194. Not even time,

  195. not even the death

  196. of His leaders,

  197. not even,

  198. as we'll discover,

  199. the disobedience

  200. of His people

  201. will stop

  202. His promise

  203. of rest

  204. being realized.

  205. So He's made a promise,

  206. a promise of rest.

  207. But what about

  208. the rest for us?

  209. Does that mean

  210. that we today

  211. have to go looking

  212. for the same land?

  213. Do we all have to

  214. pack our bags

  215. and head up to Cork airport

  216. and head off to Palestine

  217. in search of this great land?

  218. Unfortunately,

  219. that's how many people

  220. see it.

  221. If you look at

  222. what's going on

  223. in Israel today

  224. and all the battles

  225. and the fighting

  226. that's going on,

  227. they're still fighting

  228. over land.

  229. But I think

  230. they're not reading

  231. their Bibles properly.

  232. You see,

  233. we must understand

  234. the promise

  235. as God understands it,

  236. not as we understand it.

  237. You see,

  238. the land

  239. that God

  240. had promised

  241. His people,

  242. for God,

  243. yes,

  244. it was the promise

  245. of land,

  246. but that wasn't it.

  247. It was never

  248. just the physical land,

  249. it was always

  250. so much more.

  251. the land

  252. that we read

  253. about in Joshua

  254. was only a picture

  255. of a much

  256. greater land

  257. that God

  258. had promised.

  259. Keep your finger,

  260. please,

  261. in Joshua chapter 1

    Joshua 1 chapter mention

  262. and jump all the way

  263. to Hebrews

    Hebrews 4 chapter mention

  264. chapter 4.

  265. I think we've got

  266. the page number there.

  267. It's

  268. 1203.

  269. Hebrews chapter 4.

    Hebrews 4 chapter mention

  270. Hebrews chapter 4,

    Hebrews 4:8

  271. verse 8.

  272. Remember,

  273. in Joshua,

  274. it's all about

  275. a land of rest.

  276. Look what it says

  277. in verse 8.

  278. For if Joshua

  279. had given them rest,

  280. God would not

  281. have spoken about

  282. another day.

  283. there remains

  284. then a Sabbath rest

  285. for the people

  286. of God.

  287. So,

  288. the rest

  289. wasn't actually

  290. about the land.

  291. God was saying,

  292. there's another day.

  293. There's going to be

  294. another rest

  295. to come.

  296. Well,

  297. what's that rest?

  298. Well,

  299. keep going on

  300. in Hebrews

  301. and we find the answer.

  302. Look at chapter 11.

  303. Chapter 11,

  304. verse 9.

  305. Remember we said

  306. the promise

  307. was first made

  308. to Abraham?

  309. Well,

  310. here it's talking

  311. about Abraham.

  312. Chapter 11,

  313. verse 9.

  314. By faith,

  315. Abraham made

  316. his home

  317. in the promised land.

  318. Like a stranger

  319. in a foreign country,

  320. he lived in tents,

  321. as did Isaac

  322. and Jacob,

  323. who were heirs

  324. with him

  325. of the same promise.

  326. for he was

  327. looking forward

  328. to the city

  329. with foundations

  330. whose architect

  331. and builder

  332. is God.

  333. Well,

  334. what's that about?

  335. Look at verse 13.

  336. All these people

  337. were still living

  338. by faith

  339. when they died.

  340. They did not receive

  341. the things promised.

  342. They only saw them

  343. and welcomed them

  344. from a distance.

  345. Verse 16.

  346. Instead,

  347. they were longing

  348. for a better country,

  349. a heavenly one.

  350. Therefore,

  351. God is not ashamed

  352. to be called

  353. their God,

  354. for he has prepared

  355. a city for them.

  356. Verse 39.

  357. He goes on

  358. listing all the people,

  359. Joshua included.

  360. It says,

  361. these were all

  362. commended

  363. for their faith,

  364. yet none of them

  365. received

  366. what had been

  367. promised.

  368. God had planned

  369. something better

  370. for us

  371. so that only

  372. together with us

  373. would they be

  374. made perfect.

  375. You see,

  376. people like

  377. Abraham,

  378. Moses,

  379. Joshua,

  380. the promises

  381. were all made

  382. to them,

  383. but they were

  384. looking forward,

  385. the Bible says,

  386. to something

  387. not that was

  388. temporary like

  389. the promised land,

  390. but something

  391. eternal.

  392. They were looking

  393. forward to the

  394. true city,

  395. the ultimate city,

  396. heaven itself,

  397. because that is

  398. the final rest,

  399. a place of true

  400. peace and prosperity,

  401. the new creation,

  402. the new,

  403. ultimate

  404. garden of Eden,

  405. where all evil

  406. is gone.

  407. and the good

  408. news is that

  409. God has promised

  410. it to his

  411. people

  412. and nothing

  413. and no one

  414. is going to

  415. stop him

  416. bringing it

  417. about.

  418. God has made

  419. a promise of

  420. rest,

  421. heaven itself,

  422. the new

  423. creation.

  424. So,

  425. back to

  426. Joshua.

  427. Joshua,

  428. how are

  429. all these

  430. people,

  431. and there's

  432. about three

  433. million of

  434. them,

  435. we can imagine

  436. them all

  437. sitting alongside

  438. the river

  439. Jordan,

  440. how are they

  441. all going to

  442. get into

  443. this promised

  444. land?

  445. Well,

  446. they need a

  447. leader,

  448. don't they?

  449. And we're

  450. told who that

  451. leader is.

  452. Verse 6,

  453. God says

  454. to Joshua,

  455. be strong

  456. and courageous

  457. because you

  458. will lead

  459. these people

  460. to inherit

  461. the land

  462. I swore

  463. to their

  464. forefathers

  465. to give

  466. them.

  467. Joshua

  468. is God's

  469. chosen leader.

  470. Moses,

  471. who had led

  472. them for

  473. 40 years,

  474. well,

  475. he was dead

  476. and buried

  477. at this

  478. stage.

  479. They needed

  480. a new

  481. leader,

  482. and Joshua

  483. was going

  484. to be that

  485. man.

  486. Verse 7,

  487. So Joshua,

  488. be strong

  489. and very

  490. courageous.

  491. Be careful

  492. to obey

  493. all the law

  494. of my servant

  495. Moses gave

  496. you.

  497. Do not

  498. turn from

  499. it to the

  500. right or

  501. to the

  502. left,

  503. that you

  504. may be

  505. successful

  506. wherever you

  507. go.

  508. He says

  509. the same

  510. thing in

  511. verse 9,

  512. Have I not

  513. commanded you,

  514. Joshua,

  515. be strong

  516. and courageous.

  517. Now we

  518. have to be

  519. very careful

  520. to read

  521. this properly.

  522. Last night

  523. I was doing

  524. a Bible

  525. reading with

  526. Ethan,

  527. and it

  528. just so

  529. happened

  530. that the

  531. notes that

  532. he's going

  533. through is

  534. on the

  535. story of

  536. Joshua.

  537. And I

  538. had a look

  539. in his

  540. Bible,

  541. it's a

  542. children's

  543. Bible,

  544. and I

  545. had a

  546. little note

  547. to one

  548. side about

  549. this passage

  550. here,

  551. verse 6.

  552. And it

  553. was encouraging

  554. people like

  555. Ethan and

  556. me to be

  557. strong and

  558. courageous.

  559. And the

  560. way they

  561. described it

  562. was,

  563. it was like

  564. a football

  565. manager talking

  566. to his team,

  567. a little

  568. pep talk to

  569. give them

  570. great encouragement.

  571. Go on out

  572. there,

  573. be strong and

  574. courageous.

  575. And I think

  576. in some ways

  577. that's how we

  578. read this

  579. passage,

  580. isn't it?

  581. It's like a

  582. little kind of

  583. bit of energy

  584. boost,

  585. a bit of

  586. LucasAid.

  587. Go on out

  588. there,

  589. be strong and

  590. courageous.

  591. But it's not

  592. really written

  593. to us,

  594. is it?

  595. And it

  596. shouldn't be

  597. read that

  598. way.

  599. It was

  600. written and

  601. it was

  602. spoken to

  603. their leader.

  604. The people

  605. are not to

  606. be strong and

  607. courageous.

  608. The leader

  609. is to be

  610. strong and

  611. courageous.

  612. Joshua is

  613. to be strong

  614. for the

  615. people.

  616. And he

  617. can be

  618. strong because,

  619. look at the

  620. end of verse

  621. 9,

  622. God says,

  623. don't be

  624. terrified,

  625. do not be

  626. discouraged,

  627. for the

  628. Lord your

  629. God will

  630. be with

  631. you wherever

  632. you go.

  633. God is

  634. going to

  635. be with

  636. this leader,

  637. that's why

  638. he can be

  639. strong and

  640. courageous.

  641. Now I

  642. don't think

  643. it's a

  644. mistake that

  645. Joshua's

  646. name actually

  647. means the

  648. Lord is

  649. salvation.

  650. So God

  651. is saying

  652. to these

  653. people,

  654. see Joshua

  655. over here?

  656. He's my

  657. chosen leader.

  658. He's going

  659. to be the

  660. one who's

  661. going to

  662. save you.

  663. And he

  664. is the

  665. one who's

  666. going to

  667. bring you

  668. into the

  669. promised

  670. land.

  671. My

  672. chosen

  673. leader.

  674. Now I'm

  675. sure we're

  676. beginning to

  677. make connections

  678. here,

  679. aren't we?

  680. But we

  681. don't want to

  682. rush ahead

  683. too quickly.

  684. The question

  685. is, will

  686. these people

  687. trust God's

  688. chosen leader?

  689. Will they

  690. fall in

  691. behind him?

  692. Will they

  693. follow him?

  694. Well, Joshua

  695. fresh from

  696. his instructions

  697. from God

  698. goes back

  699. to the

  700. people,

  701. verse 10.

  702. So Joshua

  703. ordered the

  704. officers and

  705. the people,

  706. go through

  707. the camp

  708. and tell

  709. the people,

  710. get your

  711. supplies

  712. ready.

  713. Three days

  714. from now

  715. you will

  716. cross the

  717. Jordan

  718. here to

  719. go in

  720. and take

  721. possession

  722. of the

  723. land the

  724. Lord your

  725. God is

  726. going to

  727. give you

  728. for your

  729. own.

  730. Are they

  731. going to

  732. do as

  733. he says?

  734. Are they

  735. going to

  736. trust him?

  737. Will they

  738. obey their

  739. leader?

  740. History

  741. tells us,

  742. if we know

  743. anything of

  744. the Israelites

  745. up to this

  746. point,

  747. that they're

  748. actually quite

  749. a rebellious

  750. and stubborn

  751. lot.

  752. So there's

  753. no telling

  754. what they

  755. might do.

  756. One

  757. possible

  758. obstacle

  759. might be

  760. the tribes

  761. who were

  762. going to

  763. settle where

  764. they were.

  765. There were

  766. twelve tribes

  767. in all.

  768. Well,

  769. thirteen.

  770. There were

  771. two halves.

  772. The sons

  773. of Jacob

  774. and all

  775. their

  776. families.

  777. And two

  778. and a half

  779. of those

  780. tribes had

  781. said they

  782. wanted to

  783. settle on

  784. the east

  785. side of

  786. the Jordan.

  787. So were

  788. they going

  789. to follow

  790. Jacob?

  791. Were they

  792. just going

  793. to say,

  794. well,

  795. we've got

  796. our land

  797. here,

  798. we're going

  799. to stay

  800. put?

  801. What were

  802. they going

  803. to do?

  804. Well,

  805. look at

  806. verse 12.

  807. But to

  808. the Reubenites,

  809. the Gadites,

  810. and the half

  811. tribe of

  812. Manasseh,

  813. Joshua said,

  814. remember the

  815. command that

  816. Moses,

  817. the servant

  818. of the Lord

  819. gave you.

  820. The Lord,

  821. your God,

  822. is giving you

  823. rest and has

  824. granted you this

  825. land.

  826. Your wives,

  827. your children,

  828. and all the

  829. animals may

  830. stay in the

  831. land that

  832. Moses gave

  833. you east

  834. of the

  835. Jordan.

  836. But all

  837. your fighting

  838. men,

  839. fully armed,

  840. must cross over

  841. ahead of your

  842. brothers,

  843. because all the

  844. rest of the

  845. tribes,

  846. they had to

  847. go across.

  848. You are to

  849. go with them.

  850. You are to

  851. help your

  852. brothers until

  853. the Lord gives

  854. them rest as

  855. he has done

  856. for you,

  857. and until

  858. they too have

  859. taken possession

  860. of the land

  861. that the Lord,

  862. your God,

  863. is giving them.

  864. After that,

  865. you may go

  866. back to

  867. occupy your own

  868. land,

  869. which Moses,

  870. the servant of

  871. the Lord,

  872. gave you east

  873. of the Jordan

  874. towards the

  875. sunrise.

  876. So again,

  877. we're asking

  878. the question,

  879. are they going

  880. to obey him?

  881. Are they going

  882. to trust Joshua?

  883. Well, look at

  884. verse 16.

  885. Then they

  886. answered Joshua,

  887. whatever you

  888. have commanded

  889. us, we

  890. will do.

  891. And whatever

  892. you send us,

  893. and wherever

  894. you send us,

  895. we will go.

  896. Just as we

  897. fully obeyed

  898. Moses, so we

  899. will obey

  900. you.

  901. You see, if the

  902. people are going

  903. to experience

  904. rest, if they

  905. are going to

  906. enjoy the

  907. promise that

  908. God has given

  909. them, they

  910. have to follow,

  911. they have to

  912. trust God's

  913. leader.

  914. They have to

  915. fall in behind

  916. them and do

  917. what he says.

  918. Well, in the

  919. coming weeks,

  920. we're going to

  921. find out how

  922. they got on.

  923. how did they

  924. follow their

  925. leader?

  926. But again, at

  927. this point, we're

  928. forced to ask the

  929. question for

  930. ourselves.

  931. What leader are

  932. we going to

  933. follow?

  934. Well, the book

  935. of Joshua starts,

  936. surprisingly, with a

  937. death, verse 1.

  938. It tells us that

  939. Moses has died.

  940. And the very end

  941. of the book

  942. finishes with a

  943. death.

  944. Go to Joshua

    Joshua 24 chapter mention

  945. chapter 24.

  946. It starts with the

  947. death of Moses, and

  948. it finishes with the

  949. death of Joshua.

    Joshua 24:28

  950. Chapter 24, verse

  951. 28.

  952. Joshua sent the

  953. people away, each

  954. to his own

  955. inheritance.

  956. After these

  957. things, Joshua, son

  958. of Nun, the

  959. servant of the

  960. Lord, died at

  961. an age of 110, and

  962. they buried him in

  963. the land of his

  964. inheritance at

  965. Timna, Sarah, in

  966. the hill country of

  967. Ephraim, north of

  968. Mount Gash.

  969. So, Moses is

  970. dead.

  971. Joshua is

  972. dead.

  973. Who's going to

  974. lead the people

  975. now?

  976. Well, look at

  977. verse 33.

  978. Next in line was

  979. Eleazar.

  980. He was the next

  981. one to take the

  982. position after

  983. Joshua.

  984. But look what

  985. happened to him.

  986. Eleazar, son of

  987. Aaron, died and

  988. was buried at

  989. Gibba, which

  990. had been allotted

  991. to his son

  992. Phinehas in the

  993. hill country of

  994. Ephraim.

  995. Do you see

  996. what's happening?

  997. All the leaders

  998. are dying.

  999. They kind of

  1000. get, Moses

  1001. didn't even get

  1002. into the

  1003. promised land.

  1004. Joshua kind of

  1005. just about gets

  1006. there, and as

  1007. soon as he's

  1008. about to enjoy

  1009. it, he dies.

  1010. You see, all of

  1011. these funeral

  1012. notices are not

  1013. a mistake.

  1014. It's forcing us

  1015. to keep on

  1016. reading through,

  1017. saying, okay,

  1018. well, who's the

  1019. next leader?

  1020. leader.

  1021. Because as we

  1022. keep on going,

  1023. they all seem

  1024. to die.

  1025. So it's forcing

  1026. us to look for

  1027. a leader who

  1028. won't die.

  1029. Somebody who

  1030. will lead us

  1031. into the

  1032. eternal promised

  1033. rest.

  1034. And of course,

  1035. as we know,

  1036. as the story

  1037. unfolds of the

  1038. Bible, God

  1039. sends his

  1040. final leader,

  1041. the greatest

  1042. leader, the

  1043. king, his

  1044. own son,

  1045. Jesus Christ,

  1046. who would

  1047. come as

  1048. God's leader

  1049. for the

  1050. people.

  1051. But what

  1052. would happen

  1053. to his

  1054. leader?

  1055. He would

  1056. die.

  1057. But his

  1058. death was a

  1059. death for

  1060. us.

  1061. As our

  1062. representative,

  1063. as our

  1064. leader on

  1065. behalf of the

  1066. people, he

  1067. would go to

  1068. the cross for

  1069. us.

  1070. He would die

  1071. in our place.

  1072. He would go

  1073. for our

  1074. disobedience.

  1075. But there's

  1076. something quite

  1077. different about

  1078. this leader,

  1079. isn't there?

  1080. This leader

  1081. wouldn't stay

  1082. dead.

  1083. This leader

  1084. would rise

  1085. again from

  1086. the grave.

  1087. This king

  1088. would rise

  1089. triumphant.

  1090. Death would

  1091. be defeated.

  1092. He would

  1093. conquer the

  1094. grave so

  1095. that we

  1096. could live

  1097. forever.

  1098. The one

  1099. thing that

  1100. stops us

  1101. enjoying the

  1102. rest that

  1103. God has

  1104. promised to

  1105. us is sin

  1106. and death.

  1107. And it

  1108. has all been

  1109. conquered by

  1110. his leader,

  1111. Jesus Christ.

  1112. Jesus,

  1113. the risen

  1114. leader,

  1115. the true

  1116. Joshua.

  1117. Joshua means

  1118. the Lord

  1119. saves.

  1120. What does

  1121. Jesus mean?

  1122. It's the

  1123. New Testament

  1124. name.

  1125. He's the

  1126. Saviour.

  1127. And he

  1128. comes into

  1129. the world

  1130. inviting us

  1131. to trust

  1132. him.

  1133. He commands

  1134. us to

  1135. follow him.

  1136. so that

  1137. we may

  1138. enjoy

  1139. heaven.

  1140. The

  1141. ultimate

  1142. rest with

  1143. him.

  1144. Rest from

  1145. all evil.

  1146. Rest from

  1147. violence and

  1148. terrorism.

  1149. Rest from

  1150. every kind of

  1151. tragedy imaginable.

  1152. Rest from

  1153. all sin.

  1154. A new world

  1155. which would be

  1156. marked by

  1157. peace and

  1158. prosperity.

  1159. as Jesus

  1160. came on to

  1161. the world

  1162. scene.

  1163. Come

  1164. unto me

  1165. all you

  1166. who are

  1167. heavy

  1168. burdened

  1169. and I

  1170. will give

  1171. you

  1172. rest.

  1173. The true

  1174. leader,

  1175. Jesus Christ

  1176. has come

  1177. for us

  1178. his people.

  1179. He says,

  1180. I will go

  1181. before you.

  1182. I want you

  1183. to follow

  1184. me and

  1185. that's why

  1186. you can be

  1187. strong and

  1188. courageous because

  1189. not even

  1190. death can

  1191. defeat you if

  1192. you are

  1193. following me.

  1194. And as we

  1195. his people

  1196. follow our

  1197. true leader,

  1198. Jesus,

  1199. so we are

  1200. showing others

  1201. the way that

  1202. they can find

  1203. ultimate rest.

  1204. we are

  1205. on a

  1206. journey.

  1207. Israel,

  1208. we are

  1209. on a

  1210. journey.

  1211. We are

  1212. on a

  1213. journey.

  1214. We are

  1215. just strangers

  1216. in this

  1217. land.

  1218. We are

  1219. just

  1220. visiting.

  1221. We are

  1222. only here

  1223. for a

  1224. short time.

  1225. We have

  1226. eternity to

  1227. look forward

  1228. to.

  1229. But as we

  1230. go on our

  1231. journey,

  1232. so people

  1233. will look

  1234. and see,

  1235. where are

  1236. they going?

  1237. We are

  1238. going to be

  1239. with him

  1240. in that

  1241. final rest.

  1242. You see,

  1243. the story

  1244. of Joshua

  1245. is not

  1246. just a

  1247. book of

  1248. history

  1249. about a

  1250. people

  1251. thousands

  1252. of years

  1253. ago

  1254. unrelated

  1255. to us.

  1256. It's the

  1257. story of

  1258. Jesus.

  1259. The world

  1260. has promised

  1261. and produced

  1262. some great

  1263. leaders.

  1264. And the

  1265. world's

  1266. leaders have

  1267. made some

  1268. great promises,

  1269. haven't they?

  1270. Now, I

  1271. don't doubt

  1272. the sincerity

  1273. or the efforts

  1274. of Barack

  1275. Obama to

  1276. bring about

  1277. world peace.

  1278. I think he's

  1279. doing a good

  1280. job.

  1281. I don't

  1282. knock the

  1283. plans or

  1284. the promises

  1285. of Ender

  1286. Kenny to

  1287. change Ireland's

  1288. future.

  1289. I think he's

  1290. doing a good

  1291. job too.

  1292. But as

  1293. history has

  1294. proved,

  1295. promises will

  1296. always be

  1297. broken and

  1298. leaders will

  1299. always die.

  1300. the good

  1301. news of

  1302. God's

  1303. story,

  1304. which is

  1305. not only a

  1306. true story,

  1307. it's our

  1308. story.

  1309. This is about

  1310. us.

  1311. It's that

  1312. God's chosen

  1313. leader,

  1314. Jesus Christ,

  1315. not only

  1316. makes promises,

  1317. but he will

  1318. keep his

  1319. promise.

  1320. What God

  1321. says he will

  1322. do,

  1323. he will do.

  1324. we can

  1325. trust him

  1326. and he will

  1327. bring us

  1328. to his

  1329. eternal rest.

  1330. Let's pray

  1331. together.

  1332. Our

  1333. Father God,

  1334. we thank you

  1335. so much

  1336. for these

  1337. stories.

  1338. Thank you

  1339. for Joshua.

  1340. Thank you

  1341. for his

  1342. leadership,

  1343. his leading

  1344. of your

  1345. people.

  1346. But most

  1347. of all,

  1348. we thank you

  1349. for him

  1350. because he

  1351. pictures,

  1365. sin.

  1366. He has

  1367. called us

  1390. journey,

  1391. telling others

  1392. about the

  1393. journey,

  1394. encouraging

  1395. others to

  1396. get on

  1397. board.

  1398. Father,

  1399. go before

  1400. us.

  1401. Help us

  1402. to trust

  1403. you,

  1404. the God

  1405. who has

  1406. made his

  1407. promise,

  1408. the God

  1409. who will

  1410. keep his

  1411. promise.

  1412. Amen.

  1413. Amen.

  1414. Amen.

  1415. Thank you,

  1416. Johnny.

  1417. We're going

  1418. to take an

  1419. opportunity to

  1420. respond by

  1421. singing together,

  1422. respond to

  1423. what we've

  1424. heard.

  1425. Amen.

  1426. Amen.

  1427. Amen.

  1428. Amen.
