  1. The couple who are involved with the church plant in Kinsale, I'll leave it at the back there, but it's just a thank you to express their thanks for our support to them in many different ways in their work in their church plant there in Kinsale.

  2. So that's from Craig and Heather. I'll leave it at the back and you can have a read of it afterwards.

  3. Thank you, Cherry. Sorry. No, no, just the door.

  4. No, she can come back, honestly. It was just the door.

  5. So Joshua chapter 2. Let's pray and ask for God's help.

    Joshua 2 chapter mention

  6. Amen.

  7. Our Father God, we thank you so much for these amazing stories which have been recorded for us, kept preserved over many hundreds and thousands of years.

  8. So that we today can read them.

  9. And we pray that they would speak to us afresh, telling us and reminding us of the great God that you are.

  10. The God who has come to change us and transform us.

  11. And we pray, Father, that we would meet the God who met with Rahab.

  12. And that we would experience the same things that she experienced.

  13. That our lives would be changed.

  14. In Jesus' name.

  15. Amen.

  16. Amen.

  17. When I was little, one of my favorite stories to listen to was called The Magic Porridge Pot.

  18. Any of you ever read that?

  19. Yeah?

  20. You remember it?

  21. Some of the older people might know it.

  22. Well, for those of you who don't know the story, it's about a little girl and her mum who are very poor.

  23. They have no money and they're in hard times and can't buy any food.

  24. So the little girl goes off into the woods to buy or to find some mushrooms and wild berries.

  25. And while she's out in the woods, she meets an old lady who gives her a magic porridge pot.

  26. The pot came with two rules.

  27. By simply saying, cook, little pot, cook, the magic pot would go on making porridge.

  28. And by saying, stop, little pot, stop, the magic pot would stop making porridge.

  29. And one day, as the story goes, the little girl goes off to visit her grandmother.

  30. And the mum at home decides to make some porridge.

  31. So she puts the pot on top of the stove and she says, cook, little pot, cook.

  32. But the problem is she can't remember the words to stop it.

  33. This is how the story goes.

  34. No more now, little pot.

  35. But it kept making porridge.

  36. That's it, little pot, stop.

  37. But the porridge started to overflow from the pot and spill onto the stove.

  38. Stop it, she cried.

  39. But the porridge overflowed onto the floor and it filled the kitchen.

  40. It poured out into the street and then into the next house.

  41. Then it poured through every street in the town and no one knew how to stop it.

  42. People came with buckets and pots to scoop it up, scoop up the porridge.

  43. But as fast as they did, more and more porridge filled the streets.

  44. You'll have to go out and buy it to find out the rest of the story.

  45. But in Joshua chapter 2, we don't have anybody cooking porridge.

    Joshua 2 chapter mention

  46. But we do have overflowing grace.

  47. Grace is God's generous favor whereby he welcomes and accepts undeserving rebels like you and me.

  48. God's grace begins to flow through the streets of Jericho.

  49. Up until this point of the Bible story, it seems as if God's grace is limited to the people of Israel.

  50. But that was never God's intention.

  51. God's grace came to Israel so that it would overflow from one nation to all the other nations.

  52. Do you remember the promise that God made to Abraham back at the very beginning?

  53. You can read it in Genesis 12 and 15.

  54. He says, you will become a great nation.

  55. You will have your own place to live.

  56. And all the peoples on the earth will be blessed through you, through your family.

  57. In other words, God's grace would overflow from those people to the people of the world.

  58. And as much as we would like to shout, stop, it just keeps on flowing.

  59. No one and nothing can stop the overflow of God's grace.

  60. That's the message of Joshua chapter 2.

    Joshua 2 chapter mention

  61. Well, let's dig a little deeper and find out how that's so.

  62. First of all, the inclusiveness of God's grace.

  63. Remember, the whole nation of Israel are camped on the east side of the Jordan River.

  64. On the other side of the river lies the city of Jericho.

  65. Verse 1.

  66. Then Joshua, son of Nun, secretly sent two spies from Shittim.

  67. Go look over the land, he said, especially Jericho.

  68. Go check it out.

  69. Go see what's going on there.

  70. What are their armies doing?

  71. What way can we penetrate?

  72. Now, while Joshua is concerned about the lie of the land, God is concerned about the spread of his grace towards people.

  73. The rest of verse 1.

  74. And so the spies went and entered the house of a prostitute, a brothel, to a woman named Rahab.

  75. And they stayed there.

  76. Now, from the point of this story forwards, it all focuses around this rather dubious woman called Rahab.

  77. Verse 2.

  78. The king of Jericho was told, look, some of the Israelites came here tonight to spy out the land.

  79. So the king of Jericho sent this message to Rahab.

  80. Bring out those men who have come here and entered your house, because they have come to spy out the whole land.

  81. But the woman had taken the two men and hidden them.

  82. She said, yes, the men came to me, but I did not know where they had come from.

  83. At dusk, when it was time to close the city gate, the men left.

  84. I don't know which way they went.

  85. Go after them quickly.

  86. You may catch up with them.

  87. But Rahab had taken them up onto the roof and hidden them under the stalks of flax she had laid out on the roof.

  88. So the men set out in pursuit of the spies on the road that leads to the fords of the Jordan.

  89. And as soon as the pursuers had gone out, the gate was shut, leaving the spies still at Rahab's house.

  90. Now the moral of the story here is not to go and do likewise, because Rahab was telling big fat porkies, wasn't she?

  91. A lot of lies were going on here.

  92. So it doesn't mean to say it's okay to tell lies.

  93. Now I think what's going on here is that it's introducing us to the people that God longs to welcome in.

  94. It's introducing us to this woman, Rahab.

  95. Now there seems to be three reasons why first readers of this story would consider Rahab to be excluded from God's grace.

  96. First of all, she's a woman.

  97. Women in that culture were thought of as nobodies, second class citizens, not much better than the animals out in the pen.

  98. That's the way they were treated.

  99. Secondly, she was a prostitute, a lifestyle that was worthy of stoning.

  100. And third, Rahab is a pagan.

  101. She didn't worship God, but she served most likely at the local temple fertility shrine,

  102. basically offering sex to evoke the blessings of the gods on the people.

  103. So on all three counts, socially a woman, morally a prostitute, spiritually a pagan,

  104. Rahab ought to be excluded from God's grace.

  105. In fact, later on in Jewish culture, we learned that the first prayer that the Jew would pray,

  106. the Jewish man would pray, went like this.

  107. The first prayer in the morning, he'd wake up and he'd say,

  108. I thank you God that I am not born a Gentile.

  109. I thank you God that I am not born a woman.

  110. And I thank you that I am not born a slave.

  111. Rahab was all three, wasn't she?

  112. A pagan Gentile, an outsider.

  113. She was a woman, an outcast, a sex slave.

  114. But yet, as we will see, Rahab was included.

  115. She was welcomed into the community of God's people.

  116. So this story is not so much about spies checking out the lie of the land.

  117. It's more about a story where we're checking out God's grace.

  118. But that's not the end of Rahab.

  119. You see, I think stories here are written to remind us of God's desire to welcome and accept the outsider.

  120. From Joshua onward, Rahab goes off the radar.

  121. We don't hear much about her until we start looking back into the family tree of God's son, Jesus Christ.

  122. Hold your finger in Joshua and jump all the way to Matthew's Gospel, chapter 1.

  123. It's on page 965.

  124. Matthew, chapter 1.

    Matthew 1 chapter mention

  125. Rahab turns up in Joshua 2.

  126. We don't hear much more of her.

  127. And then she turns up in Matthew, chapter 1.

    Matthew 1 chapter mention

  128. Look at verse 1.

  129. It says,

  130. A record of the genealogy of Jesus Christ.

  131. This is the whole family line of Jesus before us.

  132. And there's some pretty famous people in here.

  133. Verse 2.

  134. Abraham, the father of Isaac, and Isaac the father of Jacob, and Jacob the father of Judah,

  135. and his 12 sons that we're actually reading about as they go into the Promised Land.

  136. So they're big, important people.

  137. And then we get down to verse 5 and we read of Salmon, the father of Boaz,

  138. whose mother was Rahab.

  139. Rahab, we're told there, had a son called Boaz.

  140. And Boaz later had a family.

  141. He was married to Ruth, by the way, another great story.

  142. And they had a family and so on, all the way down through the generations,

  143. until we come to a young teenage girl called Mary.

  144. Look at verse 21.

  145. Where we're told that she will give birth to a son,

  146. and you are to give him the name Jesus.

  147. And your notes at the bottom of the Bible, there's a little letter there.

  148. And you'll see the note at the bottom there.

  149. Jesus is the Greek form of Joshua, which means the Lord saves.

  150. Because he will save his people from their sins.

  151. Rahab was used by God to bring in Jesus Christ.

  152. Without Rahab, we would never get to Jesus.

  153. Don't you think that it's ironic that Rahab, who we might exclude,

  154. who we would write out of the story,

  155. is the vital link to the main character.

  156. To the centerpiece of the whole story.

  157. The one that we would reject, the one that we would consider not suitable,

  158. is welcomed in by God to bring about the birth of his son, Jesus Christ,

  159. so that God's grace would overflow to the whole world.

  160. That is the inclusive nature of God's grace.

  161. Now God's grace is amazing because, like Rahab, we all desperately need God's grace.

  162. You see, as God's grace begins to flow out towards the nations,

  163. he also begins to deal with the nations.

  164. As Israel moved towards the promised land,

  165. so God was beginning to confront the nations with who he is.

  166. Look back to Genesis chapter 15.

    Genesis 15 chapter mention

  167. Genesis chapter 15.

    Genesis 15 chapter mention

  168. In that chapter we read about God giving promises to Abraham about the land,

  169. about him becoming a great nation.

  170. But he also says this in verse 16 of chapter 15.

  171. Abraham is presently in the promised land.

  172. This is hundreds of years before.

  173. And God is promising him that the land where he is,

  174. that that will one day belong to all his family.

  175. But he says in verse 16,

  176. In the fourth generation,

  177. your descendants will come back here.

  178. For the sin of the Amorites has not yet reached its full measure.

  179. God has not only made promises to give them rest,

  180. but he has also made a promise that he is going to come back

  181. and he's going to judge the Amorite people.

  182. Now when we get to Joshua,

  183. 600 years later,

  184. Abraham's descendants are now under the leadership of Joshua

  185. and are camped on the edge of Jericho,

  186. the Amorite people.

  187. They're on the edge of the promised land that God had given to them.

  188. And for 600 years,

  189. the people of Jericho,

  190. the Amorites,

  191. have been living as they wanted,

  192. rejecting God

  193. and rebelling against God.

  194. As it said in Genesis 15, 16,

  195. their sins were mounting up to their full measure.

  196. Year after year,

  197. it was just getting worse and worse and worse.

  198. And now God

  199. is moving against them.

  200. Well, you say,

  201. maybe they never heard about God.

  202. Maybe it's not fair that God is going to judge them.

  203. Maybe they didn't know about God.

  204. Well, they did know about God.

  205. Back in Joshua chapter 2,

    Joshua 2:8

  206. verse 8,

  207. Before the spies lay down on the night,

  208. Rahab went up on the roof

  209. and she said to them,

  210. I know that the Lord has given this land to you

  211. and that a great fear of you has fallen on us

  212. so that all who live in this country

  213. are melting in fear

  214. are melting in fear because of you.

  215. So it wasn't just Rahab

  216. who had heard about God.

  217. The whole city knew about God

  218. and what he had promised.

  219. Look at verse 10.

  220. We have heard

  221. how the Lord dried up the water of the Red Sea

  222. for you when you came out of Egypt.

  223. That great big story

  224. when the people were let go from Egypt

  225. and they came to the Red Sea

  226. and the waters parted

  227. and Israel marched through on dry land.

  228. They got through safely to the other side

  229. and when the Egyptians followed,

  230. the waters came crashing back down on them.

  231. Jericho heard all about that.

  232. The rest of verse 10.

  233. And they heard about what you did to Zion and Og,

  234. the two kings of the Amorites

  235. east of the Jordan,

  236. whom you had completely destroyed.

  237. As they came round to the River Jordan,

  238. they came across these two kings

  239. and they said,

  240. let us pass through.

  241. God has given us this land.

  242. If you let us through,

  243. nothing will happen to you.

  244. But they refused to let them by

  245. and they were completely destroyed.

  246. It was all over the local news in Jericho.

  247. Facebook and Twitter were bouncing with stories

  248. of what had happened to the nations

  249. as they tried to stand in God's way.

  250. Anyone with an ounce of sense

  251. would have turned in repentance to God.

  252. They were a rebellious people

  253. and God was moving in judgment

  254. towards Jericho.

  255. And we knew how they feel.

  256. Look at verse 11.

  257. When we heard of it,

  258. our hearts sank

  259. and everyone's courage failed

  260. because of you.

  261. For the Lord your God

  262. is God

  263. in heaven,

  264. above and on the earth below.

  265. There's no other God.

  266. We do have our own little gods,

  267. but they're nothing.

  268. This is the one and true God.

  269. They knew who he was

  270. and they knew that judgment

  271. wasn't far behind.

  272. So how were Jericho going to respond?

  273. Well, we know how Rahab would respond

  274. and we'll find out

  275. how the rest of the city responded

  276. in chapter 5 later on.

  277. But I think it reminds us,

  278. doesn't it,

  279. that God takes sin seriously.

  280. He can't let the people

  281. and the nations of the world

  282. carry on as they wish,

  283. wrecking their own lives

  284. and destroying everybody else's.

  285. He gives the nations warning.

  286. In this case for Jericho,

  287. there were 600 years

  288. that they had to respond

  289. to God's grace.

  290. It wasn't like God woke up

  291. one morning after a bad night

  292. and he had a sore head

  293. and he decided to let it all out

  294. on poor Jericho.

  295. No, it was his reasoned

  296. and his just and fair response

  297. to a rebellious people.

  298. God had been entirely gracious to them.

  299. Now hundreds of years later,

  300. the warning still sounds to us today.

  301. And that's why we all need God's grace.

  302. Because what we see happening here

  303. to Jericho

  304. is only a picture

  305. of what will happen

  306. on a universal scale.

  307. As we begin to move

  308. through the Bible story,

  309. the judgment of God moves

  310. from the local

  311. and the temporary,

  312. what would happen to Jericho

  313. and just for the nation

  314. or just for a generation,

  315. as we move through the Bible,

  316. it moves to the global

  317. and the eternal.

  318. God's judgment

  319. isn't just in a little place

  320. and just for a little bit of time.

  321. It goes globally

  322. and it's for an eternity.

  323. What God said to Jericho,

  324. he is now saying to the world.

  325. And what God did to Jericho,

  326. he will do to everyone

  327. who refuses to turn to him

  328. and who rejects his grace.

  329. Whoever we are,

  330. we are all desperately needing

  331. God's intervening grace

  332. to save rebellious people like us

  333. from his coming judgment.

  334. Well, the wonder of God's grace

  335. is not only that he is patient,

  336. giving people lots and lots of time,

  337. but that he has made his grace available

  338. and we can receive it.

  339. Look at how Rahab responds

  340. to God's grace in verse 12.

  341. Now then, please swear to me

  342. by the Lord

  343. that you will show kindness

  344. to my family

  345. because I have shown kindness to you.

  346. The word kindness there

  347. is about God's faithful covenant

  348. or promised love.

  349. It's a love that's dependent

  350. not on us,

  351. but it's entirely dependent upon God.

  352. It's a promised love

  353. so that God remains faithful to us

  354. even when we are unfaithful to him.

  355. That's what kindness means.

  356. And so here Rahab in verse 12,

  357. it's like she's throwing herself

  358. completely into the faithful,

  359. loving arms of God.

  360. She's entrusting herself

  361. into God's kindness.

  362. Give your kindness to me.

  363. It's an act of faith.

  364. It's a means of trust

  365. as the story shows.

  366. Look at the rest of verse 12.

  367. Give me a sure sign,

  368. she says,

  369. that you will spare the lives

  370. of my father and mother

  371. and my brothers and sisters

  372. and all who belong to them

  373. and that you will save us from death.

  374. Well, what would the sign be?

  375. Verse 14.

  376. Our lives for your lives,

  377. the man assured us.

  378. We will put our lives on the line.

  379. Death itself will make sure

  380. that this promise will remain.

  381. Verse 17.

  382. So the men said to her,

  383. this oath you made us swear

  384. will not be binding on us

  385. unless when we enter the land,

  386. you have tied this scarlet cord

  387. in the window through which

  388. you let us down.

  389. Verse 21.

  390. Agreed, Rahab replied.

  391. Let it be as you say.

  392. So she went away

  393. and they departed

  394. and she tied the scarlet cord

  395. in the window.

  396. Now I want us to notice

  397. that Rahab doesn't have to do anything.

  398. All she,

  399. she doesn't have to kind of like

  400. go to church.

  401. She's not asked to read her Bible.

  402. She's not asked to do anything.

  403. All she does is tie

  404. this scarlet cord

  405. in the window

  406. which is an act of faith

  407. in what God has promised to do.

  408. God has promised

  409. to save her,

  410. to rescue her.

  411. And so all she does

  412. is tie this ribbon

  413. in the window

  414. as an act of faith

  415. because the salvation of Rahab

  416. is not based on her social,

  417. moral or spiritual condition.

  418. It's all based on God's promise

  419. towards her.

  420. And that promise

  421. becomes effective to her

  422. as she trusts

  423. in what God is going to do.

  424. And this faith

  425. leads to the protection

  426. for herself

  427. and for her whole family.

  428. Go back again to verse 12.

  429. She says,

  430. Give me a sure sign

  431. that you will spare the lives

  432. of my father and mother,

  433. my brothers and sisters

  434. and all who belong to them,

  435. that you will save us from death.

  436. Rahab longs that God's grace

  437. would flow not just to her,

  438. not that she would just be

  439. the only privileged one,

  440. but that it would extend

  441. to her whole family.

  442. And so we're left with the question,

  443. is God so generous

  444. that he would move

  445. not just to Rahab?

  446. Would he also include

  447. everybody else?

  448. Well, look at verse 17.

  449. The men said to her,

  450. This oath you made us swear

  451. will not be binding on us

  452. unless when we enter the land

  453. you have tied this scarlet cord

  454. in the window

  455. through which you let us down,

  456. and unless you have brought

  457. your father and mother,

  458. your brothers,

  459. and all your family

  460. into the house.

  461. If anyone goes outside

  462. your house into the street,

  463. his blood will be

  464. on his own head.

  465. We will not be responsible.

  466. As for anyone

  467. who is in the house with you,

  468. his blood will be on your head

  469. if a hand is laid on him.

  470. The promise is made

  471. that if they too

  472. come into the house,

  473. if her mum and her dad

  474. and her brothers

  475. and her sisters

  476. and all their wives

  477. and husbands

  478. and all of their children

  479. and all the grandchildren,

  480. if they all come

  481. under the shelter

  482. of the house,

  483. the house that God

  484. has promised to protect,

  485. they would all be kept safe

  486. when Israel march

  487. against Jericho.

  488. Would God do it?

  489. Would he really save them?

  490. Well, have a look

  491. at chapter 6,

  492. verse 22.

  493. This is after

  494. Israel have gone up

  495. against Jericho.

  496. Joshua chapter 6,

    Joshua 6:22

  497. verse 22.

  498. Joshua said to the two men

  499. who had spied out the land,

  500. go into the prostitute's house

  501. and bring her out

  502. and all who belong to her

  503. in accordance with your oath to her.

  504. So the young men who had gone,

  505. so the young men

  506. who had done the spying

  507. went in and bought out Rahab,

  508. her father and mother

  509. and brothers

  510. and all who belonged to her.

  511. And they brought her

  512. and her entire family

  513. and put them in a place

  514. outside the camp of Israel,

  515. a place of safety.

  516. Can you see the generous,

  517. overflowing,

  518. protective grace of God?

  519. You get the sense here

  520. that there was

  521. so much grace available

  522. that everybody

  523. who would trust

  524. in the promise of God,

  525. they could be in there

  526. and be kept safe.

  527. That was the nature

  528. of God's grace.

  529. It overflows.

  530. It can't be contained.

  531. It can't be stopped.

  532. It's overflowing

  533. through the streets of Jericho,

  534. through the family.

  535. And it was there

  536. for all

  537. who would trust

  538. in Him.

  539. Amen.

  540. The story of God's

  541. overflowing grace

  542. doesn't stop there.

  543. The house of refuge

  544. for Rahab

  545. and her family

  546. is not really big enough

  547. for the world,

  548. is it?

  549. We need something

  550. much bigger than a house.

  551. And in His determination

  552. to keep His grace

  553. flowing to the world,

  554. God sent His Son,

  555. Jesus Christ,

  556. through Rahab

  557. as we learned.

  558. He sent His Son,

  559. Jesus,

  560. to die on the cross,

  561. the place where

  562. all who will trust

  563. in Him

  564. will find shelter

  565. and refuge

  566. from the ultimate

  567. coming judgment.

  568. The cross stands

  569. across history,

  570. across time.

  571. It stands

  572. across the nations.

  573. The shadow of the cross

  574. falls across the world,

  575. welcoming outsiders,

  576. welcoming people

  577. who are socially

  578. and morally

  579. and spiritually

  580. broken.

  581. And He says,

  582. come to me,

  583. come into my family

  584. and you will be safe.

  585. But it doesn't stop there.

  586. Because all those

  587. who come into His family

  588. are brought together

  589. to be called

  590. God's church,

  591. His people.

  592. And the church,

  593. His people,

  594. is to be an overflow

  595. of His grace.

  596. As we are here

  597. together this morning,

  598. we are a new community

  599. of people

  600. who have been welcomed

  601. in by God,

  602. who are here to welcome

  603. one another.

  604. We are to offer

  605. as a church family

  606. a refuge for the broken.

  607. We are to take

  608. in the outsider.

  609. We are to proclaim

  610. the message of God

  611. that His grace

  612. is always greater

  613. than our sin.

  614. There is nobody

  615. who is outside

  616. the bounds

  617. of God's grace

  618. in terms of people

  619. who God can reach.

  620. Rahab is presented here

  621. in this story

  622. as one who is socially,

  623. morally,

  624. and spiritually

  625. completely outside.

  626. If God would do that

  627. for her,

  628. He will do it

  629. for anyone.

  630. And we are to be

  631. a community of grace

  632. that would bring

  633. that grace

  634. to the world

  635. in which we live.

  636. That it would overflow

  637. from our lives.

  638. That it would bubble out

  639. into our communities.

  640. That it would begin

  641. to flow through

  642. the streets of Carragalline.

  643. That it would begin

  644. to flow into

  645. every home in Ireland.

  646. And that we would be people

  647. that some here

  648. would even go

  649. and bring that grace

  650. to the world.

  651. Because there is nothing

  652. that is ever going

  653. to stop

  654. the overflow

  655. of God's grace.

  656. He has welcomed us in.

  657. And He sends us today

  658. to welcome others in.

  659. Into His amazing love.

  660. Let's pray together.

  661. Our Father God,

  662. we want to thank You

  663. so much

  664. for Your generosity,

  665. for Your amazing favor,

  666. for Your kindness.

  667. While like Jericho,

  668. we deserve,

  669. we deserve judgment

  670. because of our rebellion,

  671. because of our sin.

  672. But yet,

  673. You have sent Your Son

  674. and under the cross

  675. of Christ,

  676. we find protection,

  677. we find shelter

  678. and refuge.

  679. We find a home.

  680. We find peace

  681. and security.

  682. We find a Father

  683. who loves us.

  684. A Father who will

  685. always accept us.

  686. A Father who will

  687. never turn His back on us.

  688. A Father who will

  689. give to us

  690. all that we ever need.

  691. And it is our prayer

  692. that we would be people

  693. who would welcome others

  694. into Your family.

  695. Father,

  696. help us to be

  697. overflowing with Your grace.

  698. Fill us afresh

  699. with Your grace

  700. every day

  701. so that we would

  702. bubble over,

  703. that the streets

  704. in Carigaline,

  705. the homes in this nation

  706. would be filled

  707. with Your grace.

  708. Pour out Your Spirit

  709. and make it happen.

  710. In Jesus' name.

  711. Amen.
