  1. 19, if you're using a church Bible, it's a red...

  2. It's on page 219.

  3. So let's read together.

  4. Now when Joshua was near Jericho, he looked up and he saw a man standing in front of him with a drawn sword in his hand.

  5. Joshua went up to him and asked,

  6. Are you for us or for our enemies?

  7. Neither, he replied.

  8. But as commander of the army of the Lord, I have now come.

  9. Then Joshua fell face down to the ground in reverence and asked him,

  10. What message does my Lord have for his servant?

  11. The commander of the Lord's army replied,

  12. Take off your sandals for the place where you are standing is holy.

  13. And Joshua did so.

  14. Now Jericho was tightly shut up because of the Israelites.

  15. No one went out and no one came in.

  16. Then the Lord said to Joshua,

  17. See, I have delivered Jericho into your hands, along with its king and its fighting men.

  18. March around the city once with all the armed men.

  19. Do this for six days.

  20. Make the seven priests carry trumpets of ram's horns in front of the ark.

  21. And on the seventh day, march around the city seven times with the priests blowing the trumpets.

  22. When you hear them sound a long blast on the trumpets, make all the people give a loud shout.

  23. Then the wall of the city will collapse and all the people will go up, every man straight in.

  24. So Joshua, son of Nun, called the priests and said to them,

  25. Take up the ark of the covenant of the Lord.

  26. Make the seven priests carry trumpets in front of it.

  27. Then he ordered the people,

  28. Advance!

  29. March around the city with the armed guard, going ahead of the ark to the Lord.

  30. When Joshua had spoken to the people,

  31. the seven priests carrying the seven trumpets before the Lord went forward,

  32. blowing their trumpets, and the ark of the Lord's covenant followed them.

  33. The armed guard marched ahead of the priests who blew the trumpets,

  34. and the rear guard followed the ark.

  35. All this time the trumpets were sounding.

  36. But Joshua had commanded the people,

  37. Do not give a war cry.

  38. Do not raise your voices.

  39. Do not say a word until the day I tell you to shout.

  40. Then shout.

  41. So he had the ark of the Lord carried around the city, circling it once.

  42. Then the people returned to camp and spent the night there.

  43. Joshua got up early the next morning,

  44. and the priests took up the ark of the Lord.

  45. The seven priests carrying the seven trumpets went forward,

  46. marching before the ark of the Lord and blowing the trumpets.

  47. The armed men went ahead of them,

  48. and the rear guard followed the ark of the Lord,

  49. while the trumpets kept sounding.

  50. So on the second day,

  51. they marched around the city once,

  52. returned to the camp.

  53. They did this for six days.

  54. On the seventh day,

  55. they got up at daybreak and marched around the city seven times in the same manner,

  56. except that on that day they circled the city seven times.

  57. The seventh time around,

  58. when the priests sounded the trumpet blast,

  59. Joshua commanded the people,

  60. Shout!

  61. For the Lord has given you the city.

  62. The city and all that is in it are to be devoted to the Lord.

  63. Only Rahab the prostitute and all who are with her in the house shall be spared,

  64. because she hid the spies we sent.

  65. But keep away from the devoted things,

  66. so that you will not bring about your own destruction by taking any of them.

  67. Otherwise, you will make the camp of Israel liable to destruction and bring trouble on it.

  68. All the silver and gold and the articles of bronze and iron are sacred to the Lord

  69. and must go into his treasury.

  70. When the trumpet sounded,

  71. the people shouted,

  72. and at the sound of the trumpet,

  73. when the people gave a loud shout,

  74. the wall collapsed,

  75. so every man charged straight in and they took the city.

  76. They devoted the city to the Lord

  77. and destroyed with the sword every living thing in it,

  78. men and women,

  79. young and old,

  80. cattle, sheep, and donkeys.

  81. And Joshua said to the two men who had spied out the land,

  82. Go into the prostitute's house and bring her out

  83. and all who belong to her

  84. in accordance with your oath to her.

  85. So the young men who had done the spying went in and bought out Rahab,

  86. her father and mother and brothers,

  87. and all who belonged to her.

  88. They brought her out,

  89. her entire family,

  90. and put them in a place outside the camp of Israel.

  91. Then they burned the whole city and everything in it.

  92. But they put the silver and gold and the articles of bronze and iron

  93. into the treasury of the Lord's house.

  94. But Joshua spared Rahab the prostitute with her family

  95. and all who belonged to her,

  96. because she hid the men Joshua had sent as spies to Jericho,

  97. and she lives among the Israelites to this day.

  98. At that time Joshua pronounced his solemn oath,

  99. Cursed before the Lord is the man who undertakes to rebuild the city, Jericho.

  100. At the cost of his firstborn son will he lay its foundations,

  101. at the cost of its youngest will he set up its gates.

  102. So the Lord was with Joshua,

  103. and his fame spread throughout the land.

  104. I'm going to ask Derek to come up now.

  105. He's going to preach.

  106. And before he does,

  107. I'm going to pray for him and for us as well.

  108. Okay?

  109. So let's pray together.

  110. Our Father God,

  111. we thank you again for these stories

  112. which have been recorded for us,

  113. to teach us and to tell us

  114. about your salvation and your plan.

  115. We thank you for your gifts in people

  116. who are able to teach your word.

  117. We thank you for Derek who is here with us today.

  118. We pray that you would fill him

  119. and that you would fill us afresh with your Holy Spirit,

  120. that we may understand your word,

  121. apply it to our lives,

  122. that you would change us and transform us

  123. and encourage us through it.

  124. We ask this in Jesus' name.

  125. Amen.

  126. Thanks, Derek.

  127. Well, we have enjoyed being here with you all this week.

  128. It has been great.

  129. And we were especially looking forward to,

  130. and I think we have enjoyed

  131. worshipping with you all this morning.

  132. And especially now as we look to God's word,

  133. we are reminded this is God's word

  134. to all his people over all the earth.

  135. And that's such an exciting thing

  136. to remember and realize.

  137. Now, I've learned a bit about Irish culture

  138. since I've been here.

  139. I haven't learned everything.

  140. And I don't think I may not have vetted

  141. this particular introduction properly.

  142. But we have in the United States

  143. a television show called The Office,

  144. which I understand actually originally came from England.

  145. We have an American version of it.

  146. And there's one particular episode

  147. in which the character who's the manager in The Office,

  148. his name is Michael Scott,

  149. he gets into a bit of a pickle

  150. because he has promised a bunch of primary school students

  151. that when they graduate from high school,

  152. he's going to pay for their college tuition.

  153. Anybody seen that episode?

  154. Okay.

  155. The Americans raised their hand, yeah.

  156. Now, the problem is

  157. he doesn't actually have any money.

  158. Well, I suppose he has some money,

  159. but he can't come through on the promise.

  160. It was an empty promise.

  161. And so Michael is trying to explain himself.

  162. He's trying to justify himself

  163. and say why this is not such a bad thing.

  164. And this is what he says

  165. as he tries to explain himself.

  166. He says,

  167. I've made some empty promises in my life,

  168. but hands down,

  169. that was the most generous.

  170. As if to say,

  171. a generous empty promise

  172. is any better

  173. than an empty promise

  174. that is not generous.

  175. But of course,

  176. that's not the case, is it?

  177. An empty barrel of water

  178. is of no more use

  179. to a thirsty man

  180. than an empty glass of water.

  181. An empty promise

  182. is an empty promise.

  183. And so, you know,

  184. sometimes we've all experienced

  185. being on the receiving end

  186. of empty promises.

  187. We've all experienced

  188. the uncertainty

  189. that comes from

  190. not knowing

  191. if somebody's really going to come through

  192. on their promise for us or not.

  193. And so many of the promises

  194. that people make today

  195. are empty.

  196. They may be generous.

  197. They may be quite generous.

  198. But they're empty.

  199. And it's not just other people.

  200. It's not just

  201. what you might promise

  202. to somebody else

  203. or what somebody else

  204. might promise to you.

  205. But we make promises

  206. to ourselves

  207. that are empty also,

  208. don't we?

  209. How many of you,

  210. I don't know

  211. if this is a cultural thing here,

  212. but do you make

  213. New Year's resolutions

  214. in Ireland?

  215. Okay.

  216. Raise your hand.

  217. Be honest.

  218. Raise your hand

  219. if you made

  220. a New Year's resolution

  221. this year.

  222. Oh, come on.

  223. Oh, come on.

  224. Nobody?

  225. Okay.

  226. A few of you

  227. raised your hand.

  228. Are any of you

  229. to this day,

  230. you've been totally faithful

  231. to your New Year's resolution?

  232. Anybody?

  233. No.

  234. Of course not.

  235. And that's why most of you

  236. didn't raise your hands

  237. because you get to a certain point

  238. where you realize

  239. it doesn't matter

  240. what I promised myself.

  241. Right?

  242. I'm never going to do that again.

  243. Or I'm going to start doing that.

  244. You know,

  245. it's,

  246. I'm going to lose weight.

  247. I'm going to start running.

  248. Or I'm not going to do

  249. this habit anymore.

  250. Or I'm going to,

  251. you know,

  252. for those of us

  253. who like to think of ourselves

  254. as super spiritually,

  255. I'm going to wake up

  256. at four o'clock every morning

  257. and pray for two hours.

  258. And, you know,

  259. or something like this nature.

  260. Or I'm going to read the Bible,

  261. you know,

  262. three times a day.

  263. Or whatever it is,

  264. we make these promises

  265. to ourselves.

  266. We resolve.

  267. But they're empty.

  268. Our promises to ourselves,

  269. they may be grand,

  270. they may be generous.

  271. I shouldn't use the word

  272. grand improperly,

  273. sorry.

  274. They may be generous,

  275. but they're empty.

  276. So the question is,

  277. is there nowhere we can turn?

  278. Is there no one we can turn to

  279. for a promise that is not empty?

  280. If we're so used to giving

  281. and receiving empty promises,

  282. then where do we find someone

  283. who can give us a promise

  284. that he can keep?

  285. Because it takes a couple of things

  286. to keep a promise.

  287. It takes the intention

  288. to keep it.

  289. It takes the power

  290. and ability to keep it.

  291. It takes the resolution

  292. and the steadfastness,

  293. the faithfulness,

  294. we might say,

  295. to keep it.

  296. Well, I think we're going to find

  297. an answer to that question

  298. in today's text.

  299. But before we dig into

  300. Joshua chapter 5,

    Joshua 5 chapter mention

  301. let's back up just a bit

  302. and set some context

  303. for those of you maybe

  304. who haven't been here.

  305. Every week,

  306. as Johnny has been preaching

  307. through Joshua,

  308. the book begins

  309. with God's chosen people

  310. on the verge of realizing

  311. a promise that was made to them.

  312. They're on the verge

  313. of this land

  314. that was promised to them.

  315. A promise was given,

  316. a very generous promise.

  317. And the question is,

  318. is this an empty promise

  319. or is this a promise

  320. that's going to be fulfilled?

  321. The first time they tried to enter,

  322. they failed.

  323. They failed,

  324. according to Scripture,

  325. by virtue of their unbelief.

  326. They didn't believe the promise.

  327. So the problem was not

  328. the promise was empty,

  329. the problem was

  330. they didn't believe it.

  331. And by virtue of that,

  332. they failed.

  333. So this is

  334. possession of the promise 2.0.

  335. Or this is

  336. sort of the second attempt

  337. to possess the promise of God.

  338. And so what's really interesting

  339. in these first couple of chapters

  340. of Joshua

  341. is that this really is

  342. the second time.

  343. And everything is occurring again.

  344. Everything that had happened before.

  345. This is basically

  346. an affirmation

  347. that the present generation

  348. that's about to

  349. attain the promise of the land

  350. are, in fact,

  351. the same people of God

  352. as those who received

  353. the promise originally.

  354. You have a new leader

  355. replacing Moses

  356. in the person of Joshua.

  357. You have a new experience

  358. with the spies,

  359. whereas before

  360. the spies were unfaithful,

  361. now the spies

  362. come back

  363. and make a faithful report.

  364. You have Israel

  365. responding with faith

  366. to the spies' report.

  367. You have a whole new

  368. crossing experience

  369. of the Jordan River

  370. instead of the Red Sea.

  371. You have a circumcision

  372. occurring again

  373. earlier in chapter 5.

  374. And you have the Passover

  375. occurring again.

  376. Both of those things

  377. are very significant

  378. because the people of Israel

  379. who are there

  380. on the verge

  381. of receiving the promise,

  382. they're saying,

  383. we are the people of God.

  384. The circumcision

  385. was given as a sign

  386. that we belong to God

  387. and His promises

  388. are our promises.

  389. And the Passover

  390. was a ritual

  391. that would have

  392. connected them

  393. back to the original Exodus

  394. and said,

  395. that was our story.

  396. That's the story

  397. of our people.

  398. That's the story

  399. of God at work

  400. among His people

  401. and that's us.

  402. And so all of those things

  403. that are happening

  404. as Israel is standing there

  405. on the verge

  406. of receiving the promise,

  407. everything is falling

  408. into place

  409. to reaffirm

  410. that these are

  411. the people of God

  412. and He has given them

  413. a promise.

  414. Now what is that promise?

  415. Well, the promise was

  416. I will be your God

  417. and you will be my people.

  418. And that included

  419. a couple of elements.

  420. One of those elements

  421. was land.

  422. You see, you have God

  423. who is king,

  424. you have people

  425. who are subjects,

  426. and then you have land.

  427. And all those things

  428. together would constitute

  429. in that way of thinking

  430. the kingdom of God.

  431. This was the promise.

  432. But there was a problem.

  433. Guess what they found

  434. as they were ready,

  435. they had actually

  436. already crossed,

  437. they were ready now

  438. to possess the land,

  439. but there's already

  440. somebody there.

  441. There are already

  442. other nations

  443. living there.

  444. And it's even worse

  445. than that.

  446. They're prepared

  447. to defend themselves.

  448. They're planning

  449. to fight.

  450. So how are we going

  451. to receive this land?

  452. Is this just

  453. an empty promise?

  454. Was this God

  455. just being overly optimistic

  456. and hopeful,

  457. but it's not going

  458. to come through?

  459. Or will something

  460. else happen?

  461. And this is where we are

  462. as we step into

  463. Joshua chapter 5,

    Joshua 5:13

  464. verse 13.

  465. As we look at this text,

  466. I'm going to go ahead

  467. and give you

  468. the main point,

  469. the big picture,

  470. just in case

  471. you're tempted

  472. to lose sight

  473. of the forest

  474. for the trees,

  475. you can kind of

  476. keep coming back

  477. to this.

  478. This is the main point

  479. of this text.

  480. God is a divine

  481. warrior

  482. who,

  483. by His holy

  484. presence,

  485. secures His promises

  486. for His people,

  487. judges His enemies,

  488. and saves

  489. those who have faith.

  490. Let me say that again.

  491. God is a divine warrior

  492. who,

  493. by His holy

  494. presence,

  495. does three things.

  496. He secures

  497. His promises

  498. for His people,

  499. He judges

  500. His enemies,

  501. and He saves

  502. those who have faith.

  503. And so,

  504. at its core,

  505. this is a story

  506. about God,

  507. as all the stories

  508. of Scripture are.

  509. It's a story

  510. about God's presence,

  511. God's gift,

  512. God's holiness,

  513. and so let's look

  514. at this story.

  515. We see at the end

  516. of chapter 5,

  517. this very interesting

  518. occurrence.

  519. Joshua looks up

  520. and sees a man

  521. standing in front of him.

  522. This mysterious figure

  523. who identifies himself

  524. as commander

  525. of the Lord's army.

  526. Well, who is this commander

  527. of the Lord's army?

  528. Well,

  529. obviously,

  530. we can see a couple

  531. of things,

  532. or at least one thing,

  533. very obvious.

  534. This is a warrior.

  535. After all,

  536. what does it say?

  537. It says he sees a man

  538. standing in front of him

  539. with a drawn sword.

  540. This is somebody

  541. ready to fight.

  542. This is somebody

  543. ready for battle.

  544. This is a warrior.

  545. And then he identifies

  546. himself more specifically

  547. when he says

  548. in verse 14,

  549. I have now come

  550. as commander

  551. of the Lord's army.

  552. This is a phrase,

  553. the idea of the Lord's army,

  554. or Yahweh's army,

  555. specifically,

  556. the God of Scripture

  557. as opposed to

  558. the various other gods

  559. of that time.

  560. God's army

  561. would have been understood

  562. to be primarily

  563. the angels

  564. or sort of,

  565. you know,

  566. a heavenly host,

  567. a heavenly army.

  568. But it could also be

  569. God's people

  570. if they were willing

  571. to fight on his side.

  572. And this is the question,

  573. you know,

  574. Joshua asks,

  575. are you for us

  576. or for our enemies?

  577. And the response is,

  578. well,

  579. I'm sort of on my own side.

  580. I'm on the Lord's side.

  581. I fight for the Lord's army.

  582. So, Joshua,

  583. the question really is,

  584. are you for us

  585. or for our enemies?

  586. And Joshua,

  587. like we so often do,

  588. wants to sort of claim God

  589. for whatever our cause is

  590. or whatever our nationality is

  591. or whatever,

  592. you know,

  593. we might want God

  594. to be on our side for.

  595. But the real question is,

  596. you know,

  597. God commands his own army.

  598. Are we in that army?

  599. So the question for Joshua is,

  600. are you for me

  601. or for my adversaries?

  602. Now,

  603. this is an example.

  604. As we ask the question,

  605. who is this commander?

  606. This would be an example

  607. of what's called

  608. a theophany,

  609. which is just a big word

  610. that means

  611. God showed up.

  612. God is there.

  613. And I think there's

  614. compelling evidence

  615. that this is God

  616. in some form

  617. appearing to Joshua

  618. because of one reality.

  619. And that is found

  620. in verse 15.

  621. The commander of the Lord's army

  622. said to Joshua,

  623. remove the sandals

  624. from your feet

  625. for the place

  626. where you are standing

  627. is holy.

  628. And Joshua did so.

  629. Holiness

  630. is going to be

  631. a significant theme

  632. throughout this entire passage.

  633. And it's set up right here.

  634. As Joshua,

  635. prepared to enter into battle,

  636. is confronted

  637. with an appearance

  638. of some sort

  639. of God himself.

  640. And wherever God is,

  641. is holy.

  642. holy.

  643. That's what you need

  644. to understand

  645. about holiness

  646. this morning,

  647. is that wherever God

  648. is,

  649. is holy.

  650. I understand

  651. the Queen of England

  652. was here

  653. recently.

  654. And,

  655. we went to the

  656. English market

  657. yesterday

  658. and toured around

  659. and I saw a little

  660. plaque that apparently

  661. had been unveiled.

  662. I guess the Queen

  663. had showed up there

  664. and a plaque

  665. had been unveiled.

  666. I've never seen

  667. the Queen

  668. in person.

  669. But I would imagine

  670. had I been there

  671. that day,

  672. had I been in that market

  673. on that day

  674. when the Queen

  675. was there,

  676. I may have acted,

  677. I don't know if I would

  678. have acted differently,

  679. it wasn't like I was being

  680. particularly rude

  681. or anything,

  682. but I would have been

  683. sure to be on my best

  684. behavior, right?

  685. The Queen is here.

  686. This is somebody

  687. important.

  688. Because somebody

  689. is important here,

  690. then to be here,

  691. there's something

  692. significant about it.

  693. There's something

  694. momentous about this.

  695. Because the Queen

  696. is here.

  697. And so,

  698. had you had children

  699. there,

  700. you would have made

  701. sure they were

  702. on their best

  703. behavior and maybe

  704. not acting the way

  705. they normally do

  706. or you might have

  707. been particularly

  708. respectful or

  709. whatever.

  710. It's the nature

  711. of somebody

  712. important being

  713. there makes

  714. that entire

  715. location special.

  716. Well,

  717. now,

  718. multiply that

  719. times,

  720. and I know

  721. this is mathematically

  722. incorrect,

  723. but multiply it

  724. times infinity

  725. because I don't

  726. know what else

  727. to multiply it

  728. by.

  729. Alright?

  730. Imagine God

  731. was there in the

  732. market.

  733. Then it would be

  734. holy ground.

  735. Not just special,

  736. not just interesting

  737. or unique,

  738. it would be

  739. holy ground.

  740. And the reason

  741. why this is so

  742. important to grasp

  743. is because,

  744. remember,

  745. wherever God is,

  746. is holy.

  747. holy.

  748. I think the

  749. whole point of

  750. this whole story

  751. is to say,

  752. God is here

  753. among his

  754. people.

  755. His people are

  756. taking the land

  757. and now the

  758. land is holy.

  759. Now,

  760. that may be

  761. misunderstood in

  762. our modern context

  763. and I'll try to

  764. clear that up as

  765. we go,

  766. but that's an

  767. important idea.

  768. God is in the

  769. midst of his

  770. people.

  771. And so what

  772. does that make

  773. them?

  774. It makes them

  775. a holy people.

  776. So God is the

  777. divine warrior

  778. and God is

  779. holy.

  780. As we move on

  781. to chapter 6,

  782. we see that God

  783. gives gifts

  784. and God makes

  785. promises.

  786. We read in

  787. verse 1,

  788. it says,

  789. Now Jericho was

  790. strongly fortified

  791. because of the

  792. Israelites,

  793. no one leaving

  794. or entering.

  795. The Lord said

  796. to Joshua,

  797. Look,

  798. I have handed

  799. Jericho its

  800. king and its

  801. fighting men

  802. over to you.

  803. This is an

  804. encouraging word

  805. for Joshua

  806. on the eve

  807. of combat.

  808. For the

  809. commander

  810. of the

  811. Lord's army

  812. who is

  813. holy

  814. with his

  815. sword drawn

  816. to say

  817. to Joshua,

  818. I have

  819. given you

  820. this city.

  821. It was a

  822. gift.

  823. It wasn't

  824. something that

  825. Israel was

  826. supposed to

  827. somehow earn

  828. or somehow

  829. deserve.

  830. That wasn't

  831. the point.

  832. The point

  833. was it was

  834. a gift.

  835. I have

  836. given it

  837. to you.

  838. It was a

  839. promise.

  840. It was a

  841. promise given

  842. as a gift.

  843. And that's

  844. important because

  845. this is not

  846. the story

  847. of one

  848. ethnic group

  849. being morally

  850. superior to

  851. another group

  852. and thereby

  853. deserving to

  854. take their

  855. land.

  856. There would

  857. be a

  858. misunderstanding

  859. of this

  860. whole book

  861. of Joshua.

  862. Turn to

  863. Deuteronomy

    Deuteronomy 7 chapter mention

  864. chapter 7.

  865. In verses

  866. 6-8

  867. it says,

  868. For you are

  869. a holy

  870. people.

  871. That idea

  872. should sound

  873. familiar.

  874. You are a

  875. holy people

  876. belonging to

  877. the Lord

  878. your God.

  879. The Lord

  880. your God

  881. has chosen

  882. you to

  883. be his

  884. own

  885. possession

  886. out of

  887. all the

  888. peoples on

  889. the face

  890. of the

  891. earth.

  892. The Lord

  893. was devoted

  894. to you

  895. and chose

  896. you,

  897. not because

  898. you were

  899. more numerous

  900. than all

  901. peoples,

  902. for you were

  903. the fewest

  904. of all

  905. peoples,

  906. but because

  907. the Lord

  908. loved you

  909. and kept

  910. the oath

  911. he swore

  912. to your

  913. fathers.

  914. He brought

  915. you out

  916. with a

  917. strong hand

  918. and redeemed

  919. you from

  920. the place

  921. of slavery,

  922. from the

  923. power of

  924. Pharaoh,

  925. king of

  926. Egypt.

  927. God

  928. chose

  929. this

  930. people.

  931. He set

  932. his affection

  933. and his

  934. love on

  935. them,

  936. but not

  937. because they

  938. were such

  939. a great

  940. people,

  941. for reasons

  942. that are

  943. mysterious

  944. that we

  945. may never

  946. understand,

  947. but probably

  948. having something

  949. to do with

  950. the fact

  951. they were

  952. the smallest

  953. of all

  954. peoples.

  955. God

  956. chose

  957. them and

  958. gave them

  959. a promise

  960. and that

  961. promise

  962. involved

  963. giving

  964. them a

  965. gift,

  966. giving

  967. them

  968. the

  969. land.

  970. There's

  971. an application

  972. for this

  973. for us

  974. because if we

  975. go to

  976. Hebrews

    Hebrews 4 chapter mention

  977. chapter 4,

  978. we understand

  979. that this

  980. same idea

  981. of God

  982. giving his

  983. people in

  984. the Old

  985. Testament

  986. this land

  987. as a

  988. gift.

  989. We have

  990. a similar

  991. promise

  992. ourselves.

  993. It's really

  994. the same

  995. promise

  996. sort of

  997. fleshed out

  998. more

  999. fully.

  1000. In

  1001. Hebrews

    Hebrews 4:1

  1002. chapter 4

  1003. verse 1

  1004. it says,

  1005. therefore,

  1006. while the

  1007. promise to

  1008. enter his

  1009. rest remains,

  1010. let us

  1011. fear that

  1012. none of

  1013. you should

  1014. miss it.

  1015. He's

  1016. writing here

  1017. in the

  1018. New Testament

  1019. to New

  1020. Testament

  1021. Christians

  1022. saying the

  1023. promise to

  1024. enter the

  1025. rest was

  1026. not an

  1027. Old Testament

  1028. promise.

  1029. It

  1030. remains.

  1031. If you

  1032. back up to

  1033. chapter 3,

  1034. you see that's

  1035. the context.

  1036. The context

  1037. he's talking

  1038. about is

  1039. the parallel

  1040. with Israel

  1041. entering the

  1042. promised land.

  1043. And the

  1044. writer of

  1045. Hebrews is

  1046. saying this

  1047. promise is

  1048. still in

  1049. front of

  1050. us.

  1051. It's not

  1052. behind us.

  1053. It's still

  1054. in front of

  1055. us.

  1056. And then you

  1057. read down in

  1058. verse 8 where

  1059. it says,

  1060. if Joshua had

  1061. given them

  1062. rest, God

  1063. would not have

  1064. spoken later

  1065. about another

  1066. day.

  1067. See, our

  1068. promise, we

  1069. have a promise

  1070. of eternal

  1071. rest.

  1072. Just as a

  1073. promise was

  1074. given to

  1075. Israel of

  1076. this land,

  1077. we have the

  1078. same promise,

  1079. don't we?

  1080. It's a

  1081. promise given

  1082. to us in

  1083. Christ.

  1084. I know it's

  1085. given to us

  1086. in Christ

  1087. because of

  1088. Hebrews chapter

    Hebrews 9 chapter mention

  1089. 9 where it

  1090. says in

  1091. verse 12,

  1092. He entered

  1093. the most holy

  1094. place once

  1095. for all,

  1096. not by the

  1097. blood of

  1098. goats and

  1099. calves, but

  1100. by His own

  1101. blood, having

  1102. obtained eternal

  1103. redemption.

  1104. And so

  1105. Christ, by

  1106. His own

  1107. blood, obtained

  1108. in eternal,

  1109. that means

  1110. forever,

  1111. redemption,

  1112. being brought

  1113. out of

  1114. something,

  1115. being purchased

  1116. for something

  1117. else.

  1118. And we

  1119. have clarity

  1120. of what that

  1121. is a few

  1122. verses later

  1123. in verse

  1124. 15.

  1125. Therefore,

  1126. He, Christ,

  1127. is the

  1128. mediator of

  1129. a new

  1130. covenant,

  1131. so that

  1132. those who

  1133. are called

  1134. might receive

  1135. the promise

  1136. of the

  1137. eternal

  1138. inheritance,

  1139. because a

  1140. death has

  1141. taken place

  1142. for redemption

  1143. from the

  1144. transgressions

  1145. committed under

  1146. the first

  1147. covenant.

  1148. you see,

  1149. Christ, by

  1150. His own

  1151. death, secured

  1152. for us, for

  1153. His people, a

  1154. promise, a

  1155. rest that is

  1156. still in front

  1157. of us, an

  1158. eternal redemption

  1159. that begins when

  1160. we put our faith

  1161. in Christ, but

  1162. the fullness of

  1163. the promise is

  1164. still in front

  1165. of us.

  1166. And so, just

  1167. as for Israel,

  1168. this land,

  1169. Jericho, was a

  1170. gift, and they

  1171. should never think

  1172. of it as anything

  1173. else but a gift

  1174. freely given by

  1175. God to a

  1176. people who did

  1177. not deserve it.

  1178. So, when we

  1179. think of the

  1180. promise that is

  1181. out in front of

  1182. us, we should

  1183. never come to

  1184. the point where

  1185. we think, you

  1186. know, it was

  1187. really, you

  1188. know, God

  1189. really knew what

  1190. He was doing

  1191. when He saved

  1192. me, because,

  1193. you know, He

  1194. really foresaw

  1195. that, you know, I

1196. was going to be a

  1197. great Christian.

  1198. You know, God

  1199. is awfully smart.

  1200. No.

  1201. This was a

  1202. gift.

  1203. Don't forget

  1204. that.

  1205. And this whole

  1206. story is constructed

  1207. to remind Israel

  1208. forever and ever

  1209. and ever that they

  1210. didn't take

  1211. Jericho.

  1212. God did.

  1213. God gives gifts

  1214. and makes

  1215. promises.

  1216. Next, we see in

  1217. verses 3 through

  1218. 14 that God is

  1219. present among His

  1220. people.

  1221. God is present

  1222. among His

  1223. people.

  1224. In verses 3

  1225. through 14, we

  1226. have a

  1227. explanation of

  1228. a continuing

  1229. explanation.

  1230. God speaking to

  1231. Joshua with

  1232. instructions.

  1233. And then Joshua

  1234. transferring those

  1235. instructions to the

  1236. people and then

  1237. they begin the

  1238. first six days of

  1239. following through

  1240. with those

  1241. instructions.

  1242. We've already read

  1243. that text.

  1244. You can look back

  1245. and see some of

  1246. these things that I

  1247. refer to.

  1248. But here are a

  1249. couple of key

  1250. ideas in these

  1251. verses.

  1252. Number one is the

  1253. ark.

1254. Now, the ark is a

  1255. box that they would

  1256. carry around, but it

  1257. wasn't just a box.

  1258. You see, in the

  1259. Old Testament, there

  1260. were many very

  1261. profound realities,

  1262. very abstract sorts

  1263. of things that are

  1264. hard to understand,

  1265. and they were all

  1266. made very concrete,

  1267. very tangible,

  1268. things you could

  1269. touch and smell

  1270. and feel and look

  1271. at.

  1272. That's why there was

  1273. a sacrificial system

  1274. with blood, so that

  1275. you could see the

  1276. animals that you

  1277. were slaughtering, so

  1278. that you could feel,

  1279. so you could feel

  1280. the blood on

  1281. yourself, so that

  1282. you could see that

  1283. you were applying

  1284. blood to an altar

  1285. or to the ark.

1286. And so, all of the

  1287. rituals in the Old

  1288. Testament are not

  1289. random.

  1290. They're like object

  1291. lessons that we give

  1292. to children as we

  1293. try to instruct them

  1294. about very complicated

  1295. concepts.

1296. And so, in the Old

  1297. Testament, when you

  1298. see the ark, just

  1299. realize this is

  1300. supposed to be God.

  1301. Wherever the ark

  1302. is, that's where

  1303. God is.

  1304. In fact, that was

  1305. the whole symbolism

  1306. of it all, wasn't

  1307. it?

  1308. You have this

  1309. mercy seat on top,

  1310. which is actually a

  1311. throne.

  1312. It's a throne of

  1313. mercy.

  1314. You have the ark,

  1315. which is the object

  1316. inside the most

  1317. holy place, and so

1318. once a year, that is

  1319. the object that has

1320. to be atoned for, or

  1321. that's where you

  1322. atone for your sins

1323. of the nation, is at

  1324. the ark, because

  1325. that's where God is.

  1326. And so, in this

  1327. story, as you see

  1328. all of these

  1329. references to the

  1330. ark, and there are

  1331. many, the picture

  1332. there seems to be

  1333. you have this ark

  1334. just going around

  1335. in circles around

  1336. the city.

  1337. And all these

  1338. references to the

  1339. priests, and the

  1340. only reason the

  1341. priests are important

  1342. is because they're

  1343. the ones who

  1344. handle the ark.

  1345. What's actually

  1346. quite mysterious is

  1347. that this entire

  1348. thing is a

  1349. religious ritual.

  1350. Priests?

  1351. The ark, which is

  1352. a religious object?

  1353. This is not

  1354. combat.

  1355. That?

  1356. This isn't a

  1357. military strategy.

  1358. This is some kind

  1359. of worship service.

  1360. This is some kind

  1361. of religious ritual,

  1362. which is really

  1363. confusing because

  1364. God is just

  1365. walking around

  1366. circles around the

  1367. city, and why?

  1368. Well, it's because

  1369. God is present

  1370. among his people,

  1371. and he wanted to

  1372. make that clear,

  1373. that he was there

  1374. in the midst of

  1375. his people.

  1376. There are other

  1377. references in this

  1378. passage.

  1379. In verse 27, at

  1380. the end, it says

  1381. God was with

  1382. Joshua.

  1383. We can even back

1384. up to the end of

  1385. chapter 5 and see

  1386. that the commander

  1387. of the Lord's army

  1388. says, I have now

  1389. come, right?

  1390. Presence.

  1391. So throughout this

  1392. passage, there's this

  1393. continuing theme that

1394. God is here, God is

  1395. present with us.

  1396. God is present among

  1397. his people.

  1398. And there's

  1399. application here as

  1400. well, isn't there?

  1401. Because God is

  1402. present with his

  1403. people now through

  1404. Jesus Christ.

  1405. Emmanuel?

  1406. God?

  1407. What?

  1408. With us.

  1409. We see this in

  1410. Matthew chapter 1,

    Matthew 1 chapter mention

  1411. in verses 22 and 23,

  1412. where it says this,

  1413. now all this took

  1414. place to fulfill what

  1415. was spoken by the

  1416. Lord through the

  1417. prophet.

  1418. See, the virgin will

  1419. become pregnant and

1420. give birth to a son,

  1421. and they will name

  1422. him Emmanuel, which

  1423. is translated, God

  1424. is with us.

  1425. Just as, you know,

  1426. when you think about

  1427. this story, there are

  1428. other references in the

  1429. New Testament that make

1430. this clear, but as you

1431. think of this story and

1432. you think of God present

  1433. among his people,

  1434. people marching

  1435. around the city,

  1436. sort of being

  1437. transported, carried

  1438. around the city by

  1439. these priests, I

  1440. think it's a helpful

  1441. picture for us to

  1442. keep in mind.

  1443. That that's where our

  1444. hope and confidence is,

  1445. that God really is

  1446. present among his

  1447. people.

1448. We don't have to go

  1449. try to knock those

  1450. walls down by some

  1451. military strategy.

  1452. We simply need to

  1453. believe that God

  1454. really is here among

  1455. his people, among us,

  1456. through Jesus Christ,

  1457. and through the

  1458. spirit of Christ.

1459. And I think that has

  1460. a special relevance

  1461. when we think about

  1462. what we call the

  1463. Great Commission,

  1464. right, in Matthew

    Matthew 28 chapter mention

  1465. chapter 28, when

1466. Jesus says, I will be

1467. with you always to the

  1468. end of the age.

  1469. That's a reality that

  1470. we have to trust.

  1471. I don't know really

  1472. how to explain that

1473. any better to you than

1474. to just sort of give

1475. you an example in my

  1476. own life this morning.

  1477. As I thought about,

1478. and as I was praying,

1479. you know, God, I want

1480. your word to build up

  1481. your people.

1482. I want your spirit to

1483. be here and be at

  1484. work.

  1485. And, you know, I

  1486. don't want to, you

1487. know, the worst thing a

  1488. preacher can imagine is

1489. to just stand up there

  1490. and talk to himself

  1491. and nobody get it,

  1492. right, nobody be

  1493. changed, nobody grow,

1494. nobody be fed by God's

  1495. word.

  1496. So I was praying as I

  1497. often do and just

  1498. asking God to,

  1499. to be here.

1500. And then it dawned on

  1501. me, what am I

  1502. preaching about?

  1503. God is here.

  1504. God is present among

  1505. his people.

1506. God will do the work.

  1507. And it was encouraging

1508. for me, myself, in that

  1509. situation.

1510. And I'm sure that there

  1511. are situations you

  1512. might encounter where

1513. it would be helpful to

  1514. recall this event and

  1515. think of God marching

1516. around the city with his

  1517. people and then

  1518. realize that God is

  1519. present with you.

  1520. Believe it by faith.

  1521. God is present among

  1522. his people.

1523. As we continue on and

1524. we see the results in

  1525. verses 15 through 27,

1526. we see that God's holy

  1527. presence, because

  1528. remember he is present

  1529. and he is holy,

  1530. God's holy presence

  1531. results in two things,

1532. in one of two things.

  1533. judgment or salvation.

1534. After all, the people do

  1535. what they are instructed.

  1536. They perform this

  1537. religious ritual, this

  1538. consecration ritual, really

1539. it is, which goes back to

  1540. the issue of holiness.

  1541. Right?

1542. This city is being set

  1543. apart.

  1544. It's being made holy.

  1545. It's a way of

  1546. consecrating the entire

  1547. land.

1548. That's why they had to

  1549. destroy it completely.

1550. It was like a first

  1551. fruits sort of offering.

1552. So they do all of

1553. this and then the walls

  1554. come down, don't they?

1555. The walls come down and

1556. the people do what they

  1557. are instructed to do.

1558. In verse 16 it says,

  1559. After the seventh time

  1560. the priests blew the

  1561. trumpets and Joshua said

  1562. to the people,

1563. Shout, for the Lord has

  1564. given you the city.

  1565. But the city and

1566. everything in it are set

1567. apart to the Lord for

  1568. destruction.

  1569. Only Rahab the

  1570. prostitute and everyone

1571. with her in the house

  1572. will live because she

1573. hid the men we sent.

  1574. But keep yourselves from

1575. the things set apart or

1576. you will be set apart for

  1577. destruction.

1578. If you take any of those

  1579. things, you will set

1580. apart the camp of Israel

  1581. for destruction and bring

  1582. disaster on it.

1583. For all the silver and

1584. gold and the articles of

  1585. bronze and iron are

1586. dedicated to the Lord and

1587. must go into the Lord's

  1588. treasury.

  1589. God's holiness results in

  1590. judgment or salvation.

1591. It's judgment for those who

1592. even though they fear God

  1593. in some sense, ultimately

  1594. reject God and entrench

  1595. themselves behind walls,

  1596. refusing to believe and

  1597. instead choosing to remain

  1598. as they are.

  1599. And it's important to

  1600. understand that this is

1601. not a story of ethnic

  1602. cleansing.

  1603. I've already mentioned that

1604. this is not a story of

  1605. ethnic superiority.

  1606. It's also not a story of

  1607. ethnic cleansing.

  1608. It's not a story of some

1609. sort of simple, just, you

1610. know, people greedy for land

1611. and coming and taking it.

  1612. Because this was judgment.

1613. It wasn't just like God was

  1614. looking around and saying,

1615. my people need a place to

  1616. live.

  1617. That looks convenient.

  1618. Let's go over there.

1619. No, the people in Canaan

  1620. were under God's judgment.

1621. This was not just an act of

  1622. conquest.

1623. It was an act of judgment.

1624. God in His holy presence as

1625. He's marching around the city,

  1626. as the trumpets are

  1627. announcing His presence, as

1628. the trumpets, as they often

1629. do in Scripture, announce the

1630. coming judgment of the Lord.

1631. This was a proclamation of

  1632. judgment against Jericho.

1633. They hid behind their walls.

1634. They had nowhere else to go,

1635. but they had these big walls to

  1636. hide behind.

1637. And perhaps they thought they

  1638. were safe.

1639. We know that they were fearful

1640. because Rahab tells the spies as

  1641. much.

  1642. They were afraid.

1643. They understood that they were

1644. not dealing with something that

  1645. they could handle.

1646. But it didn't lead them to seek

  1647. salvation.

1648. It didn't lead them to seek some

  1649. sort of treaty.

1650. It didn't lead them as it led

1651. Rahab to proclaim, this is the

  1652. true God.

1653. I want to join you.

1654. No, they didn't seek escape.

1655. They just doubled down and tried

1656. to hide inside their fortress, even

  1657. though they were scared.

1658. Sometimes we can fall into the

  1659. same trap.

1660. It's easy to fear God.

1661. It's easy to be afraid of God.

  1662. And yet never repent.

1663. Yet never seek that salvation.

1664. Never seek that rescue because

1665. we would rather just keep building

1666. up walls and sort of try to be

1667. safe from the judgment of God,

1668. even though the trumpets are

1669. sounding and the judgment is

1670. coming and we hear it, we hear it,

  1671. it's happening every day.

1672. We hear this proclamation, but we

1673. don't want to believe it.

1674. And so God's holiness becomes

  1675. judgment for us.

1676. Now it's important to note that

1677. this same principle would apply to

1678. other nations later in history as

  1679. they would judge Israel.

1680. I'm going to give you a few texts

  1681. you can read later.

1682. I don't have time to go into them,

1683. but Jeremiah chapter 4 and verses

    Jeremiah 4 chapter mention

  1684. 5 through 8.

  1685. Jeremiah chapter 4 verses 16 through

    Jeremiah 4:16–21

  1686. 21.

  1687. Leviticus 18, 24 through 28.

1688. If you're taking notes, look up

  1689. those passages.

1690. Those are passages that make this

  1691. point clear.

1692. But I will read one verse, and that

  1693. is Isaiah chapter 1 verse 7.

    Isaiah 1:7

1694. Isaiah is speaking to the nation as

1695. they are running away from God.

1696. This is much later in history.

1697. They are now, they possess the land,

1698. but they are running away from God.

  1699. And it says this,

  1700. Your land is desolate.

1701. Your cities burned with fire.

  1702. Foreigners devour your fields

  1703. before your very eyes.

1704. A desolation demolished by foreigners.

1705. The exact same judgment would later

  1706. come upon Israel.

1707. That's how we know this has nothing

  1708. to do with ethnicity.

1709. This has nothing to do with ethnic

1710. cleansing or just sort of,

1711. some sort of conquest for land.

1712. This has to do with God and His people

  1713. in holiness.

1714. And I think that this story was

1715. included in the history here in Joshua

1716. precisely to teach and encourage

1717. God's people that, you know what?

1718. God gave us this land.

1719. God made this land holy.

1720. And the same thing can happen to us

1721. if we reject the covenant.

  1722. If we reject God.

1723. What prevents the same thing

  1724. from happening to us?

1725. But it's not just a proclamation of judgment,

  1726. but it's also salvation, isn't it?

1727. Because there is somebody here

1728. in this story who is saved,

1729. which reminds us that salvation is possible.

1730. Even as God encircles us

  1731. proclaiming His judgment,

  1732. salvation is possible.

1733. It's possible for those outside.

1734. It's possible for the outsiders,

  1735. which in fact,

1736. all of us were at one time,

1737. outside the people of God.

1738. And so we see the example of Rahab,

1739. who according to Hebrews 11,

1740. by faith Rahab was saved.

  1741. This was the issue.

1742. Rahab saw all the same things

1743. that the rest of her people saw.

  1744. But she had faith.

1745. And so when the spies came,

1746. she basically turned against her own people

  1747. and said,

  1748. I'm with you.

1749. Your God is my God.

1750. Your people are my people.

  1751. And it's interesting,

1752. Rahab broke with a couple of specific things.

1753. She broke with her people

1754. and she broke with her past.

  1755. Right?

  1756. She's a prostitute.

1757. And I know that there are so many people

  1758. here in Carraghline

  1759. and Ireland

  1760. and across the world.

1761. And if only we had the chance

1762. to sit down with him and say,

  1763. you know,

1764. there was somebody in Scripture

  1765. who made that break

  1766. with her own people

  1767. and her own past

  1768. and by faith

1769. was saved out of judgment.

  1770. You know,

1771. everybody else in this city

  1772. is destroyed

1773. except for Rahab and her family.

  1774. Salvation,

  1775. it's rescue.

  1776. And of course,

  1777. we understand

1778. now in the New Testament

  1779. that all of this

1780. is pictured in the cross,

  1781. isn't it?

  1782. The judgment

  1783. and salvation

  1784. in the presence

  1785. of a holy God

  1786. which presents for us

  1787. I think a very clear application.

  1788. Is God's holiness

  1789. judgment for you

  1790. or is it salvation?

  1791. Are you entrenched

  1792. like a fortified city?

1793. Or do you seek mercy

  1794. as Rahab did?

1795. Have you come to Christ

  1796. with empty hands

  1797. saying,

  1798. I'm leaving

  1799. my fortification behind

1800. because I want to be rescued.

  1801. I don't want to be destroyed.

1802. I want to be numbered

  1803. among Christ's people.

1804. The road to life is narrow.

  1805. The road to destruction

  1806. is broad.

  1807. Don't let the crowd

  1808. on the broad road

  1809. keep you from putting

  1810. all,

  1811. all,

  1812. all of your hope

  1813. in Jesus Christ.

  1814. Let Rahab

  1815. be your example.

  1816. And I think

  1817. in closing

  1818. I would just

  1819. want to summarize

  1820. a couple of things.

  1821. Number one,

1822. what I've tried to say today

  1823. is that

  1824. Jesus Christ

  1825. in this context

  1826. it is God

  1827. but we now understand

  1828. specifically this

  1829. we can put this

  1830. in the context

  1831. of Jesus Christ.

  1832. Jesus Christ

  1833. is a divine warrior

  1834. who by His

  1835. holy presence

  1836. secures

  1837. God's promises

  1838. for His people

  1839. judges His enemies

  1840. and saves

  1841. those who have faith.

  1842. Trust the promises

  1843. heed the warning

  1844. and trust

  1845. in Jesus Christ.

  1846. and I especially

  1847. want to apply that

  1848. now

  1849. to all of you

  1850. as a church

  1851. as a body

1852. as you hear this word

  1853. from the Lord together.

  1854. Believe that God

  1855. is present among you.

  1856. His promises

  1857. are true.

  1858. He is at work

  1859. in the world.

  1860. He is bringing

  1861. the nations

  1862. to faith in Christ

  1863. through the power

  1864. of the gospel.

  1865. Believe.

  1866. Believe in the power

  1867. of the gospel.

  1868. Don't be afraid.

  1869. Don't be afraid

  1870. as a church

  1871. to step out

  1872. in faith

  1873. and to do

  1874. what you feel

  1875. like you need

  1876. to do

  1877. for the sake

  1878. of the gospel

  1879. because God

  1880. is with you.

  1881. Do not be afraid.

  1882. Don't let fear

  1883. control you

  1884. when you look around

  1885. and realize

  1886. you are outnumbered

  1887. and the task

  1888. of taking the gospel

  1889. to this city

  1890. feels so momentous

  1891. and there are

  1892. so many fortifications

  1893. there are so many

  1894. barriers

1895. but God is with you.

  1896. Jesus Christ

  1897. is with you

  1898. and his gospel

  1899. is advancing.

  1900. It will advance

  1901. here in Karagline

  1902. through you

  1903. his people.

  1904. It will advance

  1905. to the ends

  1906. of the earth

  1907. through you

  1908. his people.

  1909. Believe.

  1910. Trust.

  1911. By faith

  1912. that God

  1913. is present

  1914. with you.

  1915. Trust the promises.

  1916. Heed the warning

  1917. and trust

  1918. in Jesus Christ.

  1919. Let's pray.

  1920. Heavenly Father

  1921. this is a story

  1922. of your great power

  1923. and of the battles

  1924. you fight

  1925. for your people.

  1926. But Father

  1927. this is also

  1928. a story

  1929. as Hebrews

  1930. reminds us

  1931. of faith.

  1932. It is a story

  1933. of the faith

  1934. of your people.

  1935. Father

  1936. I pray today

  1937. that you might

  1938. give birth

  1939. to faith

  1940. in hearts

  1941. in this very room.

  1942. That they would

  1943. see their sin

  1944. and be repulsed

  1945. by it.

  1946. That they would

  1947. see the coming

  1948. judgment on their

  1949. sin

  1950. but that at the

  1951. same time

  1952. they would see

  1953. a Savior

  1954. who beckons them

  1955. and says

  1956. come

  1957. come out

  1958. from the city

  1959. of destruction

  1960. and find life.

  1961. Lord I pray

  1962. for your people

  1963. here today

  1964. that you would

  1965. give us faith

  1966. believing your

  1967. presence

  1968. believing your

  1969. promise

  1970. and marching

  1971. forward

  1972. marching forward

  1973. for the cause

  1974. of the gospel

  1975. for the cause

  1976. of your kingdom.

  1977. A mighty army

  1978. not engaged

  1979. in military battle

  1980. but a mighty army

  1981. marching with

  1982. the presence

  1983. of God

  1984. seeing the

  1985. nations come

  1986. to faith

  1987. transformed

  1988. by Jesus Christ.

  1989. It is in

  1990. Christ's

  1991. glorious

  1992. name we pray.

  1993. Amen.

  1994. Amen.
