  2. 228, thank you.

  3. Joshua 13

  4. When Joshua was old and well advanced in years,

  5. the Lord said to him,

  6. You are very old and there are still very large areas of land to be taken over.

  7. This is the land that remains all the regions of the Philistines and Geshurites

  8. from the Shehor River on the east of Egypt

  9. to the territory of Ekron on the north.

  10. All of it counted as Canaanite,

  11. the territory of the five Philistine rulers in Gaza,

  12. Ashdod, Ashkelon, Gath and Ekron,

  13. that of the Avites.

  14. From the south, all the land of the Canaanites,

  15. from Ara of the Sidonians as far as Aphek,

  16. the region of the Amorites,

  17. the area of the Gabalites and all Lebanon to the east,

  18. from Baal, Gad below Mount Hermon to Lebo, Hamath.

  19. As for all the inhabitants of the mountain regions from Lebanon to Misrafoth,

  20. Maim, that is all the Sidonians,

  21. I myself will drive them out before the Israelites.

  22. Be sure to allocate this land to Israel for an inheritance,

  23. as I have instructed you,

  24. and divide it as an inheritance among the nine tribes

  25. and half of the tribe of Manasseh.

  26. The other half of Manasseh,

  27. the Reubenites and the Gadites,

  28. had received the inheritance

  29. that Moses had given them east of the Jordan,

  30. as he, the servant of the Lord,

  31. had assigned it to them.

  32. We have Joshua chapter 14, verses 6 through 15.

    Joshua 14:6–15

  33. Now the men of Judah approached Joshua at Gilgal,

  34. and Caleb, son of Jephunneh, the Kenizzite, said to him,

  35. You know what the Lord said to Moses,

  36. the man of God at Kadesh Barnea, about you and me?

  37. I was forty years old when Moses, the servant of the Lord,

  38. sent me from Kadesh Barnea to explore the land,

  39. and I brought him back a report according to my convictions.

  40. But my brothers, who went up with me,

  41. made the hearts of the people melt with fear.

  42. I, however, followed the Lord my God wholeheartedly.

  43. So on that day Moses swore to me,

  44. The land on which your feet have walked

  45. will be with your inheritance,

  46. and that of your children forever,

  47. because you have followed the Lord my God wholeheartedly.

  48. Now then, just as the Lord promised,

  49. he has kept me alive for forty-five years

  50. since the time he said this to Moses,

  51. while Israel moved about in the desert.

  52. So here I am today, eighty-five years old.

  53. I am still as strong today as the day Moses sent me out.

  54. I am just as vigorous to go out to battle now as I was then.

  55. Now give me this hill country that the Lord promised me that day.

  56. You yourself heard then that the Anakites were there,

  57. and their cities were large and fortified,

  58. but the Lord, helping me,

  59. I will drive them out just as he said.

  60. Then Joshua blessed Caleb, son of Jephunneh,

  61. and gave him Hebron as his inheritance.

  62. So Hebron has belonged to Caleb, son of Jephunneh, the Kenizzite, ever since,

  63. because he followed the Lord, the God of Israel, wholeheartedly.

  64. Hebron used to be called Kiriath Arba after Arba,

  65. who was the greatest man among the Anakites.

  66. Then the land had rest from war.

  67. Thanks very much.

  68. I think they deserve a prize for getting through half of those names anyway.

  69. Nightmare.

  70. Well, what are all those names all about?

  71. That's what we're going to find out.

  72. So let's talk to God and pray,

  73. and ask for His help as we get stuck into this.

  74. Let's pray together.

  75. Our Father God, we thank You again for Your Word.

  76. We thank You that it is trustworthy and true.

  77. We thank You that these words are not just words written by humans,

  78. but they originate with You.

  79. They are Your words that You have caused people to write.

  80. And so as we read and as we listen,

  81. we are hearing God's story,

  82. His message to us today.

  83. And so we pray that You would make Your Word applicable to us.

  84. Make it relevant.

  85. Speak it deep into our lives so that it changes us

  86. and helps us to see the wonderful inheritance that is ours.

  87. We ask this in Jesus' name.

  88. Amen.

  89. Well, I want to start this morning by asking us all two questions.

  90. The first question is this.

  91. What would you like to be doing in five years' time?

  92. Or to put it another way,

  93. what are your dreams for the future?

  94. Just think about that for a minute.

  95. What would you like to be doing in five years' time?

  96. Well, if you are of school or college age,

  97. you will most likely be finished your studies.

  98. And so maybe you see yourself settled into a good, well-paid job,

  99. possibly living in a different country.

  100. Perhaps you'll even be married,

  101. have a beautiful home,

  102. and have a couple of children.

  103. Who knows in five years' time?

  104. Well, if you're in the midlife range,

  105. you might see yourself as living comfortably.

  106. Kids have kind of grown up a little bit,

  107. so you have a little bit more time.

  108. Maybe you see yourself in a bigger home,

  109. finally enjoying some of life's little treats.

  110. If you're in the next stage,

  111. perhaps you will be retired,

  112. or you're nearing retirement.

  113. Your health is good,

  114. and so you plan to travel a bit,

  115. see the world,

  116. visit family,

  117. spend time with the grandchildren,

  118. spend all your hard-earned savings.

  119. What is it that you dream about?

  120. What would you like to be doing in five years' time

  121. or ten years' time?

  122. Now, with those thoughts in mind,

  123. here's the second question.

  124. How certain are you

  125. that those things are going to happen?

  126. How confident are you

  127. that your dreams and plans

  128. will actually become a reality?

  129. You see, we live in a world of uncertainty,

  130. where dreams of healthy retirement

  131. are interrupted by the news of a terminal illness,

  132. where dreams of enjoying life with kids

  133. are broken by redundancy or debt,

  134. where dreams of getting married

  135. and having a good job

  136. remain dreams

  137. because of spectacular personal failure.

  138. The world that we live in today

  139. is broken,

  140. and we're broken,

  141. and because of that,

  142. there is nothing certain.

  143. One comedian quipped

  144. that the only thing that we are certain of

  145. is paying taxes and dying.

  146. In fact, the rise of the insurance industry

  147. proves that we can't be certain.

  148. It's so bad now

  149. that we take out insurance

  150. on top of insurance

  151. because we live each day

  152. with the reality

  153. that something is going to go wrong,

  154. and we need to be sure of that,

  155. to be covered.

  156. Nothing is certain.

  157. Nothing is guaranteed in this world.

  158. However, in Joshua,

  159. all of that is reversed

  160. because here we're introduced

  161. to a God who speaks certainty

  162. into an uncertain world,

  163. a God who gives promises

  164. and completes the promises.

  165. In Joshua,

  166. we've been meeting a God

  167. who gives confidence

  168. that He will do for His people

  169. everything He said He will do,

  170. no matter what or who

  171. they come up against.

  172. So whether it's a flooded River Jordan,

  173. not a problem.

  174. Whether it's the fierce armies of Jericho,

  175. no hindrance,

  176. whether it's the failure

  177. of Joshua's people,

  178. nothing can stop

  179. what God has said He will do.

  180. There's a confidence

  181. and a certainty

  182. with the promises of God.

  183. And in Joshua chapters 13 and 14,

    Joshua 13 chapter mention

  184. it's all about our future inheritance

  185. and how we can be confidently certain

  186. we will receive it.

  187. So first,

  188. our inheritance that's been promised.

  189. Let's get into these chapters 13 and 14.

  190. Geographically speaking,

  191. Israel have crossed over the Jordan River.

  192. They had defeated the Amorites.

  193. They had destroyed Jericho.

  194. They've broken through the main line of defense.

  195. And in many ways,

  196. the hard work has been done.

  197. The big battles have been fought.

  198. But they're not yet settled in the promised land.

  199. A lot has been done,

  200. but there's a lot more to do.

  201. So chapter 13, verse 1.

  202. When Joshua was old and well advanced in years,

  203. the Lord said to him,

  204. Joshua, you are very old

  205. and there are still very large areas of land

  206. to be taken over.

  207. This is the land that remains.

  208. And then he starts listing it all out.

  209. In fact, you can see it there on the map.

  210. The little blue arrows there

  211. show that Israel have crossed over the Jordan River.

  212. And then as they move west,

  213. south and in the central lands

  214. and up north,

  215. these are all the lands to be taken.

  216. So in the south, verse 2,

  217. we read about the Philistines who are there

  218. and the five big cities

  219. where their rulers are in Gaza,

  220. Ashdod, Ashkelon and Gath and Ekron.

  221. Way down in the south,

  222. the land still to be taken.

  223. And then as they move up

  224. into the center lands in verse 4,

  225. there's the Canaanites.

  226. And then as they move up from there

  227. up into the north,

  228. all the way up as far as Mount Hermon,

  229. all those lands still to be taken.

  230. You see, there's a lot of land there,

  231. but with it,

  232. there are still a lot of enemies.

  233. Each region and each city

  234. is fortified with their own armies.

  235. Every town and place poses a threat

  236. to Israel, to God's people.

  237. Each one is strong enough to defeat them.

  238. And it seems an insurmountable task.

  239. They've only crossed the little river.

  240. They've only overtaken Jericho.

  241. But it's like there's a hundred other

  242. Jerichos still to take.

  243. And added to that,

  244. look back at verse 1.

  245. Joshua, we told,

  246. was very old and well advanced in years.

  247. He's got a zimmer frame out.

  248. And in case poor Joshua has forgotten

  249. and he thinks he's still a bit lively,

  250. God reminds him,

  251. Joshua, you're very old.

  252. You need to put your slippers on, mate.

  253. It's quite clear Joshua is past the age of fighting

  254. and leading his people into battle.

  255. So we're left wondering,

  256. will they ever get to settle

  257. in the land that God has promised them?

  258. Well, as we work through this,

  259. we must remember that it is God

  260. who made the promise

  261. and therefore it is His responsibility

  262. to make sure that the promise is kept.

  263. So look at verse 6.

  264. He says,

  265. as for all the inhabitants

  266. of these mountainous regions,

  267. from Lebanon to Mithra,

  268. from Maim,

  269. that is all the Sidonians,

  270. I myself will drive them out

  271. before the Israelites.

  272. So God is saying to Joshua and his people,

  273. I promised you an inheritance,

  274. so it is my responsibility

  275. to make sure that you get it

  276. and to make sure that you will get it.

  277. Look at the end of verse 6.

  278. I myself will drive them out before you.

  279. I'm going to fight for you.

  280. In fact,

  281. rehearsing this list of lands

  282. in 2 to 5

  283. is not meant to strike fear

  284. into the heart of the people,

  285. but to build confidence,

  286. reminding them of actually

  287. what is theirs,

  288. what God has already promised them.

  289. So look at the end of verse 6.

  290. He's so sure,

  291. so certain,

  292. that he says,

  293. be sure to allocate this land

  294. to Israel for an inheritance

  295. as I have instructed you,

  296. and divide it out as an inheritance

  297. among the nine tribes

  298. and a half of the tribe of Manasseh.

  299. The lands that lay before you

  300. are not dreams

  301. and wishful thinking

  302. that you hope to someday get.

  303. This is your inheritance.

  304. You see,

  305. it seems like that

  306. in the face of challenges

  307. and obstacles

  308. and opposition,

  309. God's people

  310. constantly need to be reminded

  311. of what God has promised

  312. and what God has promised

  313. he will always do.

  314. It's so easy to look at

  315. what's before us

  316. and begin to shake and quiver

  317. in our own boots

  318. and seem,

  319. this is insurmountable.

  320. How are we going to get there?

  321. How are we going to do it?

  322. But God would have us

  323. listen to his promise.

  324. In fact,

  325. this side of the cross

  326. where we stand

  327. in the whole redemptive story

  328. of God,

  329. he would have us look to,

  330. not to Joshua

  331. and all the battles

  332. they would fight,

  333. but he would have us look

  334. to the ultimate warrior,

  335. Jesus Christ,

  336. the ultimate battle

  337. that Christ has fought for us.

  338. The battle he fought for us

  339. on the cross

  340. where he drove back

  341. the greatest enemy,

  342. Satan,

  343. where he has defeated him,

  344. where on the cross

  345. he destroyed his plan,

  346. he disarmed him

  347. by his victory

  348. on the cross.

  349. And because he has defeated him,

  350. he would have us look

  351. at the ultimate inheritance,

  352. not the physical lands,

  353. that's all gone.

  354. But the promised rest,

  355. the eternal rest,

  356. the land of the new creation,

  357. paradise itself.

  358. And he says,

  359. that is guaranteed for you,

  360. that is yours

  361. because I have gone ahead of you

  362. and fought the battle for you.

  363. I have defeated your enemies

  364. so that you can go

  365. and receive that promised inheritance

  366. because of what Christ has done.

  367. That inheritance

  368. promised

  369. to his people.

  370. But then,

  371. inheritance

  372. assured.

  373. For the rest of chapter 13,

  374. all the way through

  375. to chapter 21,

  376. we have this very detailed description

  377. of what tribe of Israel

  378. is going to get

  379. what piece of land

  380. and region.

  381. We're told that

  382. two of the tribes,

  383. the Reubenites

  384. and the Gadites,

  385. they were going to settle

  386. east of the Jordan

  387. along with

  388. half of a tribe

  389. of Manasseh.

  390. Then the other

  391. nine and a half tribes

  392. would settle

  393. west of the Jordan,

  394. making up 12 altogether.

  395. Now this intricate detail,

  396. it seems quite of a bore to us,

  397. all these lists of names.

  398. Look at verse 16,

  399. for example,

  400. as he starts listing out

  401. what's going to happen.

  402. He talks about

  403. the territory

  404. from Eror

  405. of the rim

  406. of the Arnon Gorge

  407. and from the town

  408. in the middle of the gorge

  409. and the whole plateau

  410. past Miba.

  411. And then verse 25,

  412. there's the territory

  413. speaking to the Gadites.

  414. You've got the territory

  415. of Jazar

  416. and all the towns

  417. of Gilead

  418. and the half

  419. of the Ammonite country

  420. as far as Eror

  421. and Rabba.

  422. And then speaking

  423. to the half tribe

  424. of Manasseh,

  425. verse 30,

  426. he says,

  427. your territory

  428. will extend

  429. from Manahem

  430. and including

  431. all of Bashan,

  432. the entire realm

  433. of Og,

  434. king of Bashan.

  435. And that's just

  436. chapter 13.

  437. On and on it goes

  438. for eight chapters.

  439. Endless list of names

  440. that I can't even pronounce.

  441. That's why I'm not

  442. reading it all.

  443. Boundaries and borders

  444. one after the other.

  445. And it only seems

  446. that the county

  447. planner officer

  448. understands what's

  449. going on here.

  450. It's a hard old read

  451. and it's more like

  452. an endurance exercise

  453. to try and get through it.

  454. But we must remember

  455. that as we begin

  456. to read

  457. and flick over

  458. the pages

  459. one by one,

  460. it's like reading

  461. your own name

  462. in the family inheritance.

  463. So it's to be read

  464. with excitement

  465. and anticipation.

  466. Every region named,

  467. every city

  468. that's mentioned,

  469. every border

  470. that's described

  471. is like another item

  472. of the family inheritance

  473. that has been

  474. personally given to you.

  475. It's God's guarantee

  476. to each people

  477. that he says,

  478. this is what you will get

  479. because it's what

  480. I have promised you.

  481. In fact,

  482. if we take a closer look

  483. at some of these names

  484. and places,

  485. we will come away

  486. confidently assured

  487. that we will have

  488. everything that God

  489. has promised.

  490. Look at verse 10.

  491. He talks there

  492. about all the towns

  493. of Sion,

  494. king of the Amorites,

  495. who ruled in Heshbon.

  496. And then down

  497. at verse 12,

  498. he talks about

  499. the whole kingdom

  500. of Og in Bashan,

  501. who had reigned

  502. at Ashtore.

  503. Now when they begin

  504. dividing up these lands,

  505. we see that these places

  506. begin to be mentioned

  507. again.

  508. In fact,

  509. all the way through

  510. we keep seeing them

  511. being mentioned.

  512. So look at verse 21.

  513. He talks about

  514. all the towns

  515. and the plateau

  516. and the entire realm

  517. of Sion,

  518. king of the Amorites,

  519. who ruled in Heshbon.

  520. He's mentioned it again,

  521. verse 27.

  522. The end of verse 27,

  523. the realm of Sion,

  524. king of Heshbon.

  525. And then down

  526. at verse 30,

  527. he starts talking

  528. about Og,

  529. king of Bashan.

  530. They just keep

  531. being repeated

  532. all the time.

  533. And you were asking

  534. the question,

  535. what's so special

  536. about these kings

  537. and these regions

  538. that they're being

  539. repeated?

  540. Well,

  541. keep your finger

  542. in chapter 13

  543. and go back

  544. to chapter 2.

  545. Because

  546. the kings of Sion

  547. at Nog

  548. were situated

  549. on the east side

  550. of the Jordan.

  551. They were the first kings

  552. that they came up against

  553. before they even

  554. crossed the Jordan.

  555. And they defeated them.

  556. And people began

  557. to hear about it.

  558. In fact,

  559. the people of Jericho

  560. heard about it.

  561. So chapter 2,

  562. verse 10.

  563. We have heard

  564. how the Lord

  565. dried up the water

  566. of the Red Sea

  567. for you

  568. when you came up

  569. out of Egypt.

  570. And what you did

  571. to Zion and Og,

  572. the two kings

  573. of the Emirates

  574. east of the Jordan,

  575. whom you completely

  576. destroyed.

  577. When we heard of it,

  578. our hearts sank

  579. and everyone's courage

  580. failed because of you.

  581. For the Lord your God

  582. is God in heaven

  583. above

  584. and on the earth

  585. below.

  586. You see,

  587. it's a reminder

  588. to the tribes

  589. that if God

  590. has dealt

  591. with the likes

  592. of Zion and Og,

  593. these two great

  594. big kingdoms

  595. with their vast armies,

  596. do you think

  597. that there's anybody

  598. else that could

  599. stand in your way?

  600. A few weeks ago,

  601. Munster were playing

  602. Leinster

  603. in the Magners League

  604. final.

  605. Leinster were the

  606. team of the season.

  607. A week before,

  608. they had been crowned

  609. European champions,

  610. Heineken Cup champions.

  611. They were a formidable

  612. force,

  613. not a weak spot

  614. in the side.

  615. And a week later,

  616. they were to play

  617. Munster.

  618. After a bad season

  619. and everything,

  620. the odds were

  621. against them.

  622. But we could imagine

  623. McGahan,

  624. Munster's coach,

  625. talking to them

  626. in the changing rooms.

  627. Listen guys,

  628. the last time

  629. we played them,

  630. we won.

  631. The last time

  632. they were down here

  633. in Thoman Park,

  634. we beat them.

  635. Now if we've done

  636. that in the past,

  637. what's to stop

  638. you doing it again?

  639. And that's exactly

  640. what's going on here.

  641. God is saying,

  642. if I defeated

  643. the likes of Zion and Og,

  644. the greatest enemies,

  645. the strongest forces,

  646. is there anybody else

  647. that could stand

  648. in your way?

  649. And this is what

  650. gives us assurance

  651. and confidence,

  652. rehearsing and remembering

  653. past victories.

  654. If this is what God

  655. has done,

  656. then what can He not do?

  657. And there's a sense

  658. in which our future

  659. assurance

  660. is all grounded

  661. in past events.

  662. The certainty of heaven

  663. is grounded

  664. in the past events

  665. of what Christ has done.

  666. not future things

  667. that He's going to do.

  668. And it's only as we

  669. stand back

  670. and we look back

  671. and gaze through history

  672. and see what God

  673. has done

  674. that we have confidence

  675. and assurance

  676. to move forward.

  677. If Christ has taken

  678. on our greatest enemy,

  679. if Christ has disarmed

  680. him of all His weapons,

  681. if Christ has destroyed

  682. the power over of death

  683. through His resurrection,

  684. if He is raised on high

  685. and rules over all,

  686. is there any reason

  687. to think

  688. that our conquered enemy

  689. will be able

  690. to stop us

  691. reaching our inheritance?

  692. Nothing

  693. and no one

  694. can stand

  695. in the way

  696. of God

  697. and His people

  698. and His promises.

  699. Nothing.

  700. So that's inheritance

  701. assured.

  702. But what about

  703. actually receiving

  704. their inheritance?

  705. inheritance?

  706. Well, in the same way

  707. as the land

  708. was divided

  709. east of the Jordan,

  710. so it was divided

  711. west of the Jordan.

  712. The division

  713. of the east

  714. between those

  715. two and a half tribes

  716. is chapter 13

    Isaiah 13 chapter mention

  717. and then we move

  718. into chapter 14

  719. and on

  720. and it's the division

  721. of the rest

  722. of the land.

  723. Look at 14 verse 1.

  724. Now these are the areas

  725. the Israelites

  726. received

  727. as an inheritance

  728. in the land of Canaan,

  729. which Eliezer,

  730. the priest,

  731. Joshua,

  732. son of Nun

  733. and the heads

  734. of the tribal clans

  735. of Israel

  736. allotted to them.

  737. Their inheritances

  738. were assigned

  739. by lot

  740. to the nine

  741. and a half tribes

  742. as the Lord

  743. had commanded

  744. through Moses.

  745. So here they are.

  746. But let's remember

  747. that 45 years ago

  748. they were on the verge

  749. of receiving

  750. this exact

  751. same inheritance.

  752. 45 years ago

  753. do you remember

  754. the stories?

  755. 12 spies

  756. were sent out

  757. one from each tribe

  758. to go and explore

  759. the land

  760. and see what it was like.

  761. 45 years ago

  762. and 12 of them

  763. went out.

  764. Do you remember

  765. your Sunday school song?

  766. How many were good?

  767. Two were good

  768. and

  769. you didn't sing it

  770. obviously.

  771. 10 were bad

  772. and 2 were good.

  773. Wasn't that it?

  774. Anyway.

  775. We'll have to ask Sandra

  776. to sing it.

  777. She knows it.

  778. Well look back

  779. at chapter 13.

  780. Numbers chapter 13.

    Numbers 13 chapter mention

  781. Because that gives us

  782. a report

  783. of what they found

  784. when they went out

  785. to explore this land

  786. 45 years previously.

  787. remember God

  788. had promised the land

  789. and then he says

  790. go out and have a look.

  791. And this is the report

  792. that comes back

  793. chapter 13 of Numbers

  794. verse 28.

  795. But the people

  796. who lived there

  797. are powerful

  798. and the cities

  799. are fortified

  800. and very large.

  801. We even saw

  802. descendants of Anak

  803. there.

  804. The Amalekites

  805. live in the Negev.

  806. The Hittites

  807. the Jebusites

  808. and the Amorites

  809. live in the hill country

  810. and the Canaanites

  811. live near the sea

  812. and along the Jordan.

  813. Then Caleb

  814. he was one of the good spies

  815. silenced the people

  816. before Moses

  817. and said

  818. we should go up

  819. and take possession

  820. of the land

  821. for we can

  822. certainly do it.

  823. But the men

  824. who had gone up

  825. with him said

  826. we can't attack

  827. these people.

  828. They are stronger

  829. than we are.

  830. And they spread

  831. among the Israelites

  832. a bad report

  833. about the land

  834. they had explored.

  835. They said

  836. the land we explored

  837. devours

  838. those living in it.

  839. All the people

  840. we saw there

  841. are of great size.

  842. We saw the Nephilim

  843. there.

  844. The descendants of Anak

  845. come from Nephilim.

  846. They were giants.

  847. Huge people.

  848. We seemed like

  849. grasshoppers

  850. in our own eyes

  851. and we looked

  852. the same to them.

  853. Now we know

  854. from the rest

  855. of the story

  856. that after that

  857. 40 years

  858. after spying out

  859. the land

  860. they wandered

  861. the desert

  862. for 40 years.

  863. A whole generation

  864. died.

  865. They failed

  866. to get into

  867. the promised land

  868. because they failed

  869. to trust

  870. in what God

  871. had promised them.

  872. He said

  873. this land is for you

  874. but they didn't

  875. trust them

  876. to go ahead

  877. except for two spies

  878. one of whom

  879. is mentioned here

  880. in our story

  881. in Joshua chapter 14.

    Joshua 14 chapter mention

  882. Let's read about

  883. what Joshua says

  884. in verse 6

  885. of chapter 14

  886. in Joshua.

  887. Now the men

  888. of Judah

  889. approached Joshua

  890. at Gilgal

  891. and they said

  892. to Joshua

  893. you know

  894. what the Lord

  895. said to Moses

  896. the man of God

  897. at Kadesh Barnea

  898. about you and me.

  899. That's where they

  900. gave the report.

  901. I was 40 years old

  902. when Moses

  903. the servant

  904. of the Lord

  905. sent me from

  906. Kadesh Barnea

  907. to explore the land

  908. and I brought him

  909. back a report

  910. according to my convictions.

  911. I knew we could

  912. do it he was saying.

  913. I knew God

  914. had given to us.

  915. I knew we could

  916. go in and take the land.

  917. Verse 8

  918. But my brothers

  919. who went up with me

  920. made the hearts

  921. of the people sink.

  922. I however

  923. followed the Lord

  924. my God

  925. wholeheartedly.

  926. So on that day

  927. Moses swore to me

  928. the land on which

  929. your feet have walked

  930. will be your inheritance

  931. and that of your children

  932. forever

  933. because you have

  934. followed the Lord

  935. my God

  936. wholeheartedly.

  937. Now this is not

  938. an arrogant demand

  939. on the part of Caleb

  940. as if to say

  941. stand back guys

  942. and watch me

  943. as I march in

  944. and take the land.

  945. Not at all.

  946. This was an expression

  947. of faith.

  948. His confidence

  949. hadn't changed

  950. in the 40 years.

  951. He was ready

  952. to take the land

  953. then

  954. and he was ready

  955. to take the land

  956. now

  957. not because of

  958. who he was

  959. but because of

  960. what God

  961. had promised him.

  962. Verse 12

  963. So he says

  964. now give me

  965. this hill country

  966. that the Lord

  967. promised me

  968. that day.

  969. You yourself

  970. heard that the

  971. Anakites were there

  972. and that cities

  973. were large and fortified

  974. but

  975. is that going to

  976. stand in our way?

  977. No, the Lord

  978. helping me

  979. we will drive

  980. them out

  981. just as he said.

  982. You see

  983. Caleb was a man

  984. of faith.

  985. He was stepping

  986. out in faith

  987. and the only way

  988. that the people

  989. were going to

  990. receive their

  991. inheritance

  992. is faith

  993. in what God

  994. said he will do.

  995. In fact

  996. there's no room

  997. for arrogance

  998. or self-dependence.

  999. It all rests

  1000. on God's power

  1001. on his plan

  1002. and on his promise.

  1003. One writer

  1004. put it helpfully

  1005. like this

  1006. it's not

  1007. great faith

  1008. in God

  1009. but it's our

  1010. little faith

  1011. in a great

  1012. big God.

  1013. Faith

  1014. in a great

  1015. big God

  1016. in what God

  1017. said he would do.

  1018. This is what

  1019. guarantees

  1020. receiving our

  1021. inheritance.

  1022. Faith in what

  1023. God can do

  1024. not what we

  1025. can do.

  1026. And nothing

  1027. has changed

  1028. throughout time.

  1029. Whatever place

  1030. we stand in

  1031. history

  1032. the way to

  1033. receive our

  1034. inheritance

  1035. is always

  1036. by faith.

  1037. Jump forward

  1038. in your Bible

  1039. to 1 Peter.

  1040. I haven't got a

  1041. page number.

  1042. If somebody's got it

1043. they can shout it out.

  1044. 1 Peter chapter 1.

    1 Peter 1 chapter mention

  1045. 1-2-1-7

  1046. if you're using a

  1047. church Bible.

  1048. 1-2-1-7

  1049. 1 Peter

    1 Peter 1 chapter mention

  1050. chapter 1.

  1051. Let's pick it up

  1052. in verse 3.

  1053. We're remembering

  1054. here Caleb

  1055. he would go

  1056. into the land

  1057. by faith

  1058. trusting in

  1059. what God

  1060. said he would

  1061. do.

  1062. Now listen to

  1063. how this all

  1064. applies to us.

  1065. Verse 3

  1066. He says

  1067. Praise be

  1068. to the God

  1069. and Father

  1070. of our Lord

  1071. Jesus Christ

  1072. in his great

  1073. mercy

  1074. he has given

  1075. us new birth

  1076. into a living

  1077. hope

  1078. through the

  1079. resurrection

  1080. of Jesus

  1081. Christ

  1082. from the dead.

  1083. This is the

  1084. past events

  1085. the past victories

  1086. something that

  1087. Christ has done

  1088. he's died

  1089. he's risen again

  1090. and because of

  1091. that verse 4

  1092. we go into

  1093. an inheritance

  1094. that can never

  1095. perish

  1096. spoil or fade

  1097. heaven itself

  1098. which is kept

  1099. in heaven

  1100. for you

  1101. and here's the

  1102. key verse

  1103. verse 5

  1104. who through

  1105. faith

  1106. are shielded

  1107. by God's

  1108. power

  1109. until the

  1110. coming of

  1111. salvation

  1112. that is ready

  1113. to be revealed

  1114. in the last

  1115. time.

  1116. Now you tell

  1117. me from

  1118. reading that

  1119. what guarantees

  1120. our inheritance

  1121. it's faith

  1122. in what Christ

  1123. has done

  1124. in the past

  1125. his death

  1126. and resurrection

  1127. for us

  1128. and his promise

  1129. to shield

  1130. us

  1131. or to protect

  1132. us

  1133. until we

  1134. get there.

  1135. Our inheritance

  1136. is guaranteed

  1137. our destination

  1138. is 100%

  1139. secure.

  1140. we thought

  1141. at the beginning

  1142. about our

  1143. dreams

  1144. well you know

  1145. what you can

  1146. lose your

  1147. job

  1148. you can

  1149. lose

  1150. your health

  1151. you can

  1152. lose your

  1153. spouse

  1154. or a

  1155. friend

  1156. you could

  1157. lose your

  1158. home

  1159. you could

  1160. lose your

  1161. possessions

  1162. you could

  1163. lose all

  1164. your savings

  1165. and the

  1166. loss of

  1167. any one

  1168. of those

  1169. things would

  1170. be terribly

  1171. difficult

  1172. but listen

  1173. to this

  1174. you cannot

  1175. lose

  1176. what God

  1177. has promised

  1178. you

  1179. you cannot

  1180. lose his

  1181. gift of

  1182. forgiveness

  1183. you cannot

  1184. lose his

  1185. love and

  1186. grace

  1187. and you

  1188. cannot

  1189. lose

  1190. what he

  1191. has reserved

  1192. for you

  1193. in heaven

  1194. in fact

  1195. all the

  1196. things that

  1197. are truly

  1198. worth living

  1199. for can

  1200. never be

  1201. taken away

  1202. from you

  1203. and as we

  1204. live through

  1205. this life

  1206. as we look

  1207. forward to

  1208. what's to

  1209. come

  1210. if we keep

  1211. our eyes

  1212. on what

  1213. is certain

  1214. it means

  1215. we can live

  1216. securely in

  1217. this world

  1218. today where

  1219. nothing seems

  1220. guaranteed

  1221. it means that

  1222. our decisions

  1223. and our choices

  1224. that we make

  1225. today will not

  1226. be made on

  1227. the basis of

  1228. fears and

  1229. worries about

  1230. the future

  1231. and what

  1232. happens if

  1233. this happens

  1234. and what

  1235. happens if

  1236. that happens

  1237. instead there

  1238. will be a

  1239. freedom

  1240. we will be

  1241. set free

  1242. to give

  1243. ourselves

  1244. completely

  1245. and entirely

  1246. to that which

  1247. is guaranteed

  1248. our promised

  1249. inheritance

  1250. and if you

  1251. are a Christian

  1252. then that's

  1253. where you're

  1254. heading

  1255. but there's

  1256. plenty of

  1257. people who

  1258. are not

  1259. heading to

  1260. their promised

  1261. inheritance

  1262. inheritance

  1263. but Christians

  1264. are changed

  1265. that means we

  1266. can give

  1267. ourselves

  1268. completely to

  1269. our promised

  1270. inheritance

  1271. we can do

  1272. everything

  1273. we can take

  1274. risks in

  1275. life to see

  1276. that other

  1277. people get

  1278. there because

  1279. our future

  1280. is certain

  1281. we can give

  1282. of our money

  1283. to make sure

  1284. that people

  1285. that the gospel

  1286. goes out

  1287. because our

  1288. future is

  1289. certain

  1290. we can give

  1291. of our lives

  1292. we can go

  1293. moving places

  1294. we can go

  1295. different places

  1296. because our

  1297. future is

  1298. certain

  1299. and God

  1300. is with us

  1301. we don't need

  1302. to be building

  1303. for the here

  1304. and now

  1305. and building

  1306. our lives

  1307. full of material

  1308. things and

  1309. making sure

  1310. that everything

  1311. is okay

  1312. today

  1313. because all

  1314. of that

  1315. will one

  1316. day be

  1317. gone

  1318. but our

  1319. future

  1320. is certain

  1321. and it's

  1322. guaranteed

  1323. therefore we

  1324. are free

  1325. to make

  1326. decisions

  1327. and take

  1328. choices

  1329. and actions

  1330. that will

  1331. see other

  1332. people

  1333. also receive

  1334. their promised

  1335. inheritance

  1336. we have a

  1337. great promise

  1338. a great God

  1339. who has gone

  1340. before us

  1341. and nothing

  1342. and no one

  1343. will ever

  1344. stand

  1345. in his way

  1346. let's pray

  1347. together

  1348. our father

  1349. god

  1350. we are

  1351. truly

  1352. amazed

  1353. that it

  1354. is not

  1355. dependent

  1356. on us

  1357. in what

  1358. we can

  1359. do

  1360. but it's

  1361. all about

  1362. what god

  1363. has done

  1364. for us

  1365. in christ

  1366. he has

  1367. won the

  1368. greatest

  1369. battle

  1370. he has

  1371. secured

  1372. a victory

  1373. for us

  1374. he has

  1375. guaranteed

  1376. our future

  1377. inheritance

  1378. therefore

  1379. father

  1380. change us

  1381. so that

  1382. we will

  1383. live with

  1384. eternity

  1385. in mind

  1386. that we

  1387. wouldn't be

  1388. building up

  1389. storing up

  1390. for the

  1391. here and

  1392. now

  1393. but we

  1394. would live

  1395. for eternity

  1396. give us

  1397. as our

  1398. inheritance

  1399. the lost

  1400. may people

  1401. we know

  1402. in our

  1403. families

  1404. and our

  1405. friends

  1406. come to

  1407. love you

  1408. and follow

  1409. you

  1410. may we

  1411. give of

  1412. our

  1413. resources

  1414. give of

  1415. our

  1416. money

  1417. give of

  1418. our

  1419. time

  1420. give of

  1421. our

  1422. energies

  1423. because we

  1424. know that

  1425. the victory

  1426. is sure

  1427. so please

  1428. father do a

  1429. work in us

  1430. do a work

  1431. in our

  1432. community

  1433. do a work

  1434. in our

  1435. land

  1436. we pray

  1437. this in

  1438. jesus name

  1439. amen

  1440. we're going

  1441. to sing

  1442. together

  1443. how many

  1444. people know

  1445. this song

  1446. one

  1447. ralph

  1448. ralph

  1449. ralph

  1450. knows

  1451. it

  1452. sandra

  1453. knows

  1454. it

  1455. a couple

  1456. others

  1457. i think

  1458. you kind

  1459. of have

  1460. to

  1461. you either

  1462. have to

  1463. have been

  1464. brought up

  1465. in church

  1466. or kind

  1467. of be a

  1468. little bit

  1469. older

  1470. it's kind

  1471. of an

  1472. oldie

  1473. hymn

  1474. but it's a

  1475. good one

  1476. and it

  1477. reminds us

  1478. that

  1479. yeah we

  1480. don't rest

  1481. in ourselves

  1482. we rest

  1483. in the

  1484. one who

  1485. has gone

  1486. before us

  1487. the lord

  1488. jesus christ

  1489. we trust

  1490. in him

  1491. and in

  1492. his name

  1493. we go

  1494. let's stand

  1495. together

  1496. just follow

  1497. along

  1498. if you don't

  1499. know it

  1500. and join

  1501. in

  1502. we're going

  1503. to play it

  1504. at a reasonable

  1505. pace as well

  1506. because it can

  1507. drag out

  1508. otherwise

  1509. so we'll see

  1510. how it goes

  1511. we rest

  1512. on thee

  1513. a shield

  1514. and a defender

  1515. we go

  1516. not for

  1517. alone

  1518. against

  1519. the

  1520. strong

  1521. in thy

  1522. strength

  1523. praise

  1524. in thy

  1525. team
