  1. And Kirstie to come and read. So if you'd like to come up the front, you can put your

  2. Bibles here and use this. Just hold it up to your mouth so we can all hear.

  3. It's Joshua chapter 24, verses 1 to 13 I'll be reading. That's page 240 on the church

    Joshua 24:1–13

  4. Bibles. Then Joshua assembled all the tribes of Israel at Shechem. He summoned the elders,

  5. leaders, judges, and officials of Israel, and they presented themselves before God.

  6. Joshua said to all the people, This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says. Long ago your

  7. forefathers, including Terah, the father of Abraham and Nahor, lived beyond the river,

  8. and worshipped other gods. But I took your father Abraham from the land beyond the river,

  9. and led him throughout Canaan, and gave him many descendants. I gave him Isaac, and to Isaac I gave

  10. Jacob and Esau. I assigned the hill country of Ther to Esau, but Jacob and his sons went down to Egypt.

  11. Then I sent Moses and Aaron, and I afflicted the Egyptians by what I did there, and I brought you

  12. out. When I brought your fathers out of Egypt, you came to the sea, and the Egyptians pursued them

  13. with chariots and horsemen as far as the Red Sea. But they cried to the Lord for help, and he put

  14. darkness between you and the Egyptians. He brought the sea over them and covered them. You saw with

  15. your own eyes what I did to the Egyptians. Then you lived in the desert for a long time. I brought you

  16. to the land of the Amorites, who lived east of the Jordan. They fought against you, but I gave them

  17. into your hands. I destroyed them from before you, and you took possession of their land. When Balak,

  18. son of Zippor, the king of Moab, prepared to fight against Israel, he sent for Balaam, son of Beor,

  19. to put a curse on you. But I would not listen to Balaam, so he blessed you again and again,

  20. and I delivered you out of his hand. Then you crossed the Jordan and came to Jericho. The citizens

  21. of Jericho fought against you, as did also the Amorites, Perizzites, Canaanites, Hittites,

  22. Gergashites, Hivites, and Jebusites. But I gave them into your hands. I sent the hornet ahead of you,

  23. which drove them out before you. Also the two Amorite kings. You did not do it with your own sword

  24. and bow. So I gave you a land in which you did not toil, and cities you did not build,

  25. and you live in them and eat from vineyards and olive groves that you did not plant.

  26. Let's continue in verse 14. Now fear the Lord and serve him with all faithfulness. Throw away the

  27. gods of your forefathers, worship beyond the river and in Egypt, and serve the Lord. But if serving the

  28. Lord seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether

  29. the gods of your forefathers serve beyond the river, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are

  30. living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord. Then the people answered,

  31. Far be it from us to forsake the Lord to serve other gods. It was the Lord, our God himself, who

  32. brought us and our fathers up out of Egypt from that land of slavery, and performed those great signs

  33. before our eyes. He protected us on our entire journey, and among all the nations through which

  34. we traveled. And the Lord drove out before all the nations, including the Amorites, who lived in the

  35. land. We too will serve the Lord, because he is our God. Joshua said to the people, You are not able to

  36. serve the Lord. He is a holy God. He is a jealous God. He will not forgive your rebellion and your sins.

  37. If you forsake the Lord and serve foreign gods, he will turn and bring disaster on you and will make

  38. an end of you, after he has been good to you. But the people said to Joshua, No, we will serve the

  39. Lord. Then Joshua said, You are witnesses against yourselves that you have chosen to serve the Lord.

  40. Yes, we are witnesses, they replied. Now then, said Joshua, throw away the foreign gods that are among

  41. you, and yield your hearts to the Lord, the God of Israel. And the people said to Joshua, We will serve

  42. the Lord our God and obey him. On that day Joshua made a covenant for the people, and there at Shechem

  43. he drew up for them decrees and laws. And Joshua recorded these things in the book of law of God.

  44. Then he took a large stone and set it up there under the oak, near the holy place of the Lord.

  45. See, he said to all the people, this stone will be a witness against us. It has heard all the words

  46. the Lord has said to us. It will be a witness against you if you are untrue to your God.

  47. Thank you, Jonathan and Kirstie for reading. Let's talk to God, let's pray. As we finish

  48. off this great book of Joshua, let's pray together.

  49. Our Father God, you are very great. You are creator and ruler over our lives. And we are small

  50. and insignificant. And we come before you humbly and ask that you would speak to us.

  51. We ask that you would change our lives. That you would cause us to be a people who live in response

  52. to you in worship. Teach us what that means. And help us in Jesus' name. Amen.

  53. So all the hard work has been done. Battles have been fought, cities have been captured,

  54. and the lands have all been divided. Finally, God's people can sit back and take things easy

  55. in the promised land. That's the expectation as we reach the concluding chapter of Joshua chapter 24.

    Joshua 24 chapter mention

  56. After 600 years of patiently waiting for God's promise to be realized, it seems that at long

  57. last they can rest and relax they can rest and relax. Perhaps it's time to build a nice new home

  58. along the Mediterranean coast. Maybe to upgrade their car or their chariot or whatever they used.

  59. Join the gym and take a few holidays. But God is not finished with his people. Far from settling down,

  60. it's time to start serving. The sight that Joshua has chosen to speak to the people is full of

  61. significance. Let's read verse 1. Then Joshua assembled all the tribes of Israel at Shechem. Not just

  62. individuals. Everybody was included. All God's people. He summoned the elders, the leaders, the judges,

  63. and officials of Israel, and they presented themselves before God. Well, you say, what's significant about

  64. that? Well, Shechem was the place where God first met Abraham way back in Genesis chapter 12. It was the

    Genesis 12 chapter mention

  65. place that God spoke promises to Abraham. He said to Abraham all those years ago, I promise you that you

  66. will be a great nation. You will have a land in which to live and you will be a blessing.

  67. Now here they are, 600 years later, gathered together as a nation, gathered together in the land that God

  68. had promised to hear Joshua's speech. What's he going to say to them? Well, to our surprise, look at what he does

  69. say in verse 14. Now fear the Lord and serve him with all faithfulness. Rather than settling down, it's a time to get up

  70. and start serving. The work is just beginning. You see, God has brought his people into the land so that they can bring

  71. God to the surrounding nations. They are to serve God by speaking and living the salvation that they've experienced

  72. and come to know. They are to begin to live out amongst the people around them. So it's not a case of Israel

  73. sitting back and putting the feet up and watching TV. It's a case of God has so blessed you.

  74. Now go and be a blessing to all the other nations. Go and be a blessing to the world. Go and serve your God.

  75. So Joshua chapter 24 reminds us that while God has saved us, it's only the start. Our salvation is only the beginning.

    Joshua 24 chapter mention

  76. He has saved us so that we can go and serve him together as a community wholeheartedly.

  77. And sometimes we lose sight of that. We are very individualistic in our thinking about things that I want to do.

  78. There's none of that here. The whole nation of Israel was gathered together.

  79. We are all gathered together this morning to hear what God is saying to us together, not individually.

  80. It's a message for his church today.

  81. Well, what does he have to say to his church? Well, let's look at what God has done, first of all, his amazing salvation.

  82. Look at verse 2.

  83. Now let's go back in time to where Abraham was.

  84. He was the kind of guy who you would never see in church.

  85. If you showed Abraham a Bible, he wouldn't know what it was.

  86. Verse 2 tells us that he and his family worshipped other gods.

  87. God wasn't on his radar. He wasn't looking for him and he wasn't wanting him.

  88. In fact, Abraham's whole life was lived serving someone else or something else.

  89. Because that's what worship is.

  90. That's what it says in verse 2.

  91. They worshipped other gods.

  92. Worship is not about singing songs and getting excited with the praise time.

  93. As much as it's good to sing, that's not what worship is.

  94. Worship is all about what or who you serve.

  95. What you give your life to.

  96. What you give your life to.

  97. Or who is most important to you becomes the object of your worship.

  98. So, whatever you love the most, whoever you trust the most, that's where you serve.

  99. And for Abraham, it was certainly not the creator god.

  100. He had a god of his own invention or making.

  101. People of Abraham's culture, well, they depicted everything as a god.

  102. They had hundreds of gods.

  103. They had sex gods.

  104. They had work gods.

  105. They had money gods, nation gods.

  106. Gods all over the place.

  107. And in reality, all of these different gods were just replacements for the one true god.

  108. They were god substitutes.

  109. And that's how Abraham and his family lived.

  110. They were ruled by the gods that they made and therefore they worshipped them.

  111. They served them.

  112. Now, the problem with worshipping other gods is they're not actually good to you.

  113. They enslave you.

  114. They begin to control you and to consume you.

  115. And isn't that what happens when we make money and work and family a god,

  116. when we put that as the priority in our lives?

  117. They begin to control your life.

  118. They begin to overtake you.

  119. And so you live your life for that.

  120. And rather than your gods giving you something,

  121. they begin to take from you.

  122. They take of your life.

  123. They suck you dry.

  124. And the trouble with these kind of gods is that you make and create for yourself,

  125. they can't free you.

  126. They can't do anything for you.

  127. Of course they give us some pleasure for a time,

  128. but they're powerless.

  129. Rather than save you,

  130. they actually enslave you.

  131. And this is the life that Abraham was stuck in.

  132. He was living a life where he was worshipping other gods.

  133. And it's the kind of life that we're in as well.

  134. It's how society operates.

  135. Oz Guinness, you may have heard of him as a well-known apologist,

  136. comes from the great line of the Guinness family.

  137. He wrote in one of his books,

  138. No God but God.

  139. Listen to this quote.

  140. He says,

  141. When we cease to worship God,

  142. we do not worship nothing.

  143. We worship anything.

  144. We don't just eliminate God.

  145. We don't just put God to one side.

  146. We erect God's substitutes in his place.

  147. A God's substitute can be anything.

  148. It can be a physical object,

  149. a property.

  150. It can be a person,

  151. like your spouse.

  152. It can be an activity,

  153. like sport.

  154. It can be a role,

  155. an institution,

  156. like church.

  157. It can be a hope,

  158. an image,

  159. like beauty,

  160. an idea,

  161. or a pleasure,

  162. a hero.

  163. Anything can substitute for God.

  164. And so, like Abraham,

  165. we need to be people who are set free

  166. from the gods that we worship

  167. so that we can be free to serve

  168. and worship the true living God.

  169. And that's exactly what God did in Abraham's life.

  170. Look at verse 3.

  171. He says,

  172. But I took your father Abraham

  173. from the land beyond the river

  174. and led him throughout Canaan

  175. and gave him many descendants.

  176. I gave him Isaac.

  177. And to Isaac,

  178. I gave Jacob and Esau.

  179. I assigned the hill country of Seir to Esau.

  180. Do you see what's going on here?

  181. It is God who makes the move.

  182. He says,

  183. I took you, Abraham.

  184. God intervenes.

  185. God takes the initiative.

  186. And when we're stuck worshipping

  187. and serving something

  188. or someone else,

  189. we need somebody from outside

  190. to come into our lives,

  191. to break into our lives,

  192. to free us.

  193. And this is illustrated so well for us

  194. in the next few verses.

  195. Look at the end of verse 4.

  196. We learn that, yes,

  197. he had taken Isaac and Jacob

  198. and they had had many families,

  199. but Jacob and his sons

  200. went down to Egypt

  201. where they were enslaved.

  202. Verse 5.

  203. Then I sent Moses and Aaron

  204. and I afflicted the Egyptians

  205. by what I did there

  206. and I brought you out.

  207. Now not only were they rescued

  208. and set free from slavery.

  209. Verse 8.

  210. I brought you to the land

  211. of the Amorites

  212. who lived east of the Jordan.

  213. They fought against you,

  214. but I gave them into your hands.

  215. I destroyed them from before you

  216. and you took possession

  217. of their land.

  218. Look at verse 11.

  219. Keep with me.

  220. Then you crossed the Jordan

  221. and you came to Jericho.

  222. The citizens of Jericho

  223. fought against you

  224. as did the Amorites,

  225. the Perizzites,

  226. the Canaanites,

  227. the Hittites,

  228. the Girgashites,

  229. the Hivites,

  230. Jebusites,

  231. and all the other ites

  232. that there would have been.

  233. And I gave them into your hands.

  234. Verse 13.

  235. So I gave you a land

  236. on which you did not toil

  237. and cities you did not build

  238. and you live in them

  239. and you eat from the vineyards

  240. and from the olive groves

  241. that you did not plant.

  242. Do you see what he's saying here?

  243. It's crystal clear.

  244. Salvation is God's work.

  245. We can't free ourselves

  246. from our own slavery.

  247. We need God to rescue us.

  248. Now I want to drive this home

  249. for us this morning

  250. because many people

  251. like to think

  252. that we can free ourselves.

  253. That somehow

  254. when it comes to salvation

  255. it's our choice

  256. and our decision.

  257. That we have the power

  258. and the resources

  259. within ourselves

  260. to change us.

  261. But that's not what God is saying.

  262. Look at the emphasis.

  263. It's all I.

  264. I took you.

  265. I sent Moses.

  266. I brought you into the land.

  267. I fought for you.

  268. I delivered you.

  269. I gave what you did not have.

  270. In other words

  271. you cannot save yourself.

  272. You can't free yourself.

  273. Abraham and his family

  274. couldn't do it

  275. and neither can we.

  276. It's not your decision.

  277. It's not even your desire.

  278. It's all by God's grace.

  279. Now of course

  280. some of you will be thinking

  281. they're going

  282. yeah but don't I decide

  283. to follow Jesus?

  284. Yeah I know this thing

  285. about God choosing

  286. and all the rest of it.

  287. But don't I decide

  288. to follow Jesus?

  289. Don't I decide

  290. to be a Christian?

  291. Well no you don't decide.

  292. One of the most well-known verses

  293. that we often quote

  294. from Ephesians 2.

  295. It says by grace

  296. you have been saved

  297. and it's through faith

  298. which is the gift of God.

  299. Even faith

  300. the faith to believe in God

  301. is a gift from God.

  302. It comes from Him.

  303. And this is the point

  304. that He's making.

  305. You made no move towards me.

  306. You were off serving

  307. your own gods

  308. and doing your own thing

  309. but I intervened

  310. into your life

  311. and caused you.

  312. I called you.

  313. I chose you.

  314. It's all by God's grace.

  315. Why?

  316. So that He would humble us.

  317. He would remove

  318. any ounce of pride

  319. any sense of superiority

  320. because as soon as I say

  321. well I did something

  322. or I chose

  323. or I responded

  324. then we're saying

  325. I did something

  326. what somebody else can't do.

  327. It removes all pride

  328. and all sense of superiority.

  329. superiority.

  330. But the big point is

  331. if God has done this for us

  332. as God has intervened

  333. into our life

  334. if God has saved us

  335. and freed us

  336. and blessed us

  337. then the only reasonable

  338. and right response

  339. is to give our lives

  340. in service

  341. to the only true God.

  342. God has done this for you

  343. if God has saved us

  344. and freed us

  345. then the only right response

  346. is to give our lives

  347. in service

  348. to the true God.

  349. So having looked at

  350. God's amazing salvation

  351. let's look at how we respond

  352. our loving service.

  353. there's a few things

  354. that we need to look at here.

  355. The first one is

  356. choose who you serve.

  357. Joshua gives a very simple

  358. but yet direct choice

  359. to God's people.

  360. Look at verse 15.

  361. He says there

  362. but if serving the Lord

  363. seems undesirable to you

  364. then choose for yourselves

  365. this day

  366. whom you will serve

  367. whether the gods

  368. your forefathers

  369. served beyond the river

  370. or the gods

  371. of the Amorites

  372. in whose land

  373. you are living.

  374. But as for me

  375. and my household

  376. we will serve the Lord.

  377. Now read that carefully.

  378. Look at the verse.

  379. Read it carefully.

  380. It does not say

  381. choose to serve God

  382. and then serve nothing.

  383. No it says

  384. choose whom

  385. you will serve.

  386. In other words

  387. if you don't serve God

  388. you will end up

  389. serving someone else

  390. or something else.

  391. Because you can't serve

  392. nothing.

  393. Every one of us

  394. are born into this world

  395. as servers

  396. and worshippers.

  397. We all worship

  398. someone or something.

  399. And since we're all

  400. very good this morning

  401. and we've all gotten

  402. out of our beds

  403. and we're here in

  404. church together

  405. and we're reading

  406. our Bibles

  407. and listening

  408. and paying attention

  409. we're all going to say

  410. I serve God

  411. I worship God

  412. that's me

  413. that's who I've chosen.

  414. But do we?

  415. Do we worship God?

  416. Do we serve God?

  417. Well

  418. I help stack up

  419. a few chairs

  420. and I kind of

  421. I do my bit

  422. and I serve the tea

  423. and coffee

  424. and well I'm even there

  425. on a Wednesday

  426. sometimes handing out

  427. the flyers.

  428. I do my bit.

  429. But is that it?

  430. Is that what service?

  431. Is that what worship is?

  432. Now I want us to do

  433. some really hard

  434. self-examination here

  435. and I ask myself

  436. the same questions.

  437. I'm going to ask

  438. two big questions

  439. and I want you to

  440. think about it

  441. very carefully.

  442. Here's the first one.

  443. It's to find out

  444. who we serve.

  445. To find out

  446. where our worship

  447. is lying.

  448. Here's the first question.

  449. What is

  450. your greatest

  451. nightmare?

  452. What causes you

  453. the most amount

  454. of worry?

  455. Okay?

  456. Stay with me.

  457. I'm over here.

  458. Okay?

  459. What's your greatest

  460. nightmare?

  461. What causes you

  462. the most amount

  463. of worry?

  464. Is it losing

  465. your job?

  466. Is it maybe

  467. getting cancer?

  468. Is it your

  469. children's future

  470. and what's

  471. going to happen

  472. then?

  473. Is it maybe

  474. losing your spouse?

  475. And here's

  476. the next question

  477. and it's related

  478. to it.

  479. So you've all

  480. got something

  481. there that

  482. causes you

  483. the biggest

  484. worry.

  485. What do you

  486. look to

  487. to comfort

  488. you or

  489. give you

  490. happiness

  491. when those

  492. worries come

  493. or when

  494. things go

  495. wrong in

  496. your life?

  497. Where do you

  498. look to?

  499. What do you

  500. go to to

  501. give some

  502. little comfort

  503. to yourself?

  504. Is it in

  505. relationships?

  506. Maybe it's

  507. sex.

  508. Maybe you run

  509. to family.

  510. Maybe it's

  511. all about

  512. comfort spending

  513. and buying

  514. yourself

  515. little treats.

  516. Maybe it's

  517. even in

  518. religion,

  519. in church.

  520. Now your

  521. answer to

  522. those questions

  523. will tell you

  524. what or who

  525. you serve.

  526. What's most

  527. important to you

  528. in life?

  529. What do you

  530. dream about

  531. and long for

  532. when you're

  533. sitting down

  534. daydreaming?

  535. Where does

  536. your mind

  537. go to?

  538. anything that

  539. takes priority

  540. over God,

  541. anything that

  542. is more

  543. important to

  544. you than

  545. God is

  546. what we

  547. serve.

  548. And the

  549. reality is we

  550. serve many

  551. gods.

  552. We worship

  553. our job.

  554. It consumes

  555. us.

  556. It's what we

  557. live for.

  558. We worship

  559. our children.

  560. Our children

  561. tell us,

  562. control us.

  563. They absorb

  564. us.

  565. Our health

  566. becomes a

  567. God.

  568. Our

  569. relationships,

  570. the need

  571. for a

  572. partner,

  573. the need

  574. for a

  575. boyfriend or

  576. a girlfriend

  577. or a

  578. wife or

  579. a husband,

  580. that becomes

  581. the priority

  582. and the

  583. goal of

  584. our life.

  585. And God

  586. gets pushed

  587. out.

  588. As we said

  589. earlier in the

  590. quote,

  591. God is

  592. eliminated.

  593. We push

  594. him to one

  595. side and

  596. we erect

  597. God's

  598. substitutes.

  599. Something to

  600. take the

  601. place of

  602. God.

  603. Something that

  604. we look to

  605. for our

  606. meaning and

  607. our purpose.

  608. So there's a

  609. challenging

  610. question,

  611. verse 15.

  612. In the

  613. light of

  614. God's

  615. amazing

  616. salvation,

  617. choose who

  618. you will

  619. serve.

  620. Is it the

  621. God who

  622. frees you

  623. or the

  624. gods that

  625. fail you?

  626. So choose

  627. who you

  628. serve.

  629. Second,

  630. know the

  631. cost.

  632. God's

  633. God.

  634. Because

  635. serving

  636. God is

  637. not going

  638. to be

  639. easy.

  640. This next

  641. point is

  642. an attempt

  643. to stop

  644. anybody from

  645. becoming a

  646. Christian.

  647. You've heard

  648. me.

  649. It costs

  650. your life.

  651. It's

  652. serious if

  653. you are

  654. going to

  655. be a

  656. Christian.

  657. Verse

  658. 16.

  659. The people

  660. answered,

  661. far be

  662. it for

  663. us to

  664. forsake

  665. the

  666. Lord to

  667. serve

  668. other

  669. gods.

  670. Verse

  671. 19.

  672. Then Joshua

  673. said to

  674. the people,

  675. you're not

  676. able to

  677. serve the

  678. Lord.

  679. He is a

  680. holy God.

  681. He is a

  682. jealous God.

  683. He will

  684. not forgive

  685. your rebellion

  686. and your

  687. sins.

  688. If you

  689. forsake the

  690. Lord and

  691. serve other

  692. gods,

  693. he will

  694. turn and

  695. bring disaster

  696. on you and

  697. make an

  698. end of you

  699. after he

  700. has been

  701. good to

  702. you.

  703. You see,

  704. serving God

  705. is serious.

  706. It's not

  707. for half-hearted

  708. people.

  709. We can't

  710. treat God

  711. with an

  712. attitude that

  713. says something

  714. like this,

  715. sure,

  716. God is

  717. loving and

  718. forgiving.

  719. It really

  720. doesn't matter

  721. how I

  722. treat God

  723. and,

  724. well,

  725. if I

  726. want to

  727. live my

  728. life this

  729. way and

  730. God is

  731. second best,

  732. that's okay

  733. because God

  734. always forgives

  735. us,

  736. doesn't he?

  737. He's kind

  738. and compassionate

  739. and gracious

  740. and,

  741. well,

  742. God may be

  743. forgiving,

  744. but it

  745. doesn't give

  746. us a

  747. right to

  748. abuse his

  749. forgiveness

  750. or take

  751. it for

  752. granted.

  753. And I

  754. think Joshua

  755. is putting

  756. it up to

  757. them.

  758. He's

  759. challenging

  760. them and

  761. he's putting

  762. it up to

  763. us as well

  764. as we

  765. listen in.

  766. It requires

  767. careful thinking

  768. for each one

  769. of us to

  770. respond.

  771. He's

  772. challenging

  773. us of

  774. the cost.

  775. Can you

  776. do it?

  777. He is a

  778. great God.

  779. God,

  780. can you

  781. give your

  782. life to

  783. him?

  784. But yet

  785. he's urging

  786. us on in

  787. his commitment.

  788. You can't

  789. serve him.

  790. You can't

  791. serve this

  792. God.

  793. Yes,

  794. we can.

  795. He's urging

  796. them on in

  797. their commitment.

  798. Isn't that

  799. exactly what

  800. Jesus said?

  801. Let me read

  802. to you from

  803. Mark's

  804. Gospel.

  805. Jesus said,

  806. whoever wants

  807. to save

  808. his life

  809. will lose

  810. it.

  811. Whoever

  812. loses his

  813. life for

  814. me and

  815. for the

  816. Gospel

  817. will save

  818. it.

  819. What good

  820. is it for

  821. a person

  822. to gain

  823. the whole

  824. world yet

  825. forfeit

  826. his soul?

  827. What can

  828. a person

  829. give in

  830. exchange for

  831. his soul?

  832. If anyone

  833. is ashamed

  834. of me,

  835. says Jesus,

  836. and my

  837. words in

  838. this

  839. adulterous

  840. and sinful

  841. generation,

  842. then I

  843. will be

  844. ashamed of

  845. him when

  846. he comes

  847. in my

  848. Father's

  849. glory.

  850. Before we

  851. start making

  852. great and

  853. grand promises,

  854. before we

  855. start waving

  856. our flags

  857. around and

  858. saying,

  859. oh, I'm

  860. going to

  861. serve the

  862. Lord,

  863. or I'm

  864. committed to

  865. him,

  866. know the

  867. cost of

  868. serving a

  869. God who

  870. saves.

  871. It's

  872. serious.

  873. It costs

  874. your life.

  875. The third

  876. thing there

  877. then is,

  878. know the

  879. cost.

  880. Second,

  881. deal with

  882. your

  883. gods.

  884. If we're

  885. going to

  886. choose to

  887. serve God,

  888. we must

  889. first deal

  890. with our

  891. God

  892. substitutes

  893. that we

  894. have in

  895. our lives.

  896. Look at

  897. verse 14,

  898. he says,

  899. fear the

  900. Lord,

  901. serve him

  902. with all

  903. faithfulness,

  904. throw away

  905. the gods

  906. your

  907. forefathers

  908. worshipped.

  909. And the

  910. people,

  911. verse 21,

  912. the people

  913. said to

  914. Joshua,

  915. we will

  916. serve the

  917. Lord.

  918. Then Joshua

  919. said,

  920. you are

  921. witnesses

  922. against

  923. yourselves

  924. that you

  925. have chosen

  926. to serve

  927. the Lord.

  928. Yes,

  929. we are

  930. witnesses,

  931. they replied.

  932. Now then,

  933. said Joshua,

  934. throw away

  935. the foreign

  936. gods that

  937. are among

  938. you and

  939. yield your

  940. hearts to

  941. the Lord,

  942. the God

  943. of Israel.

  944. This is a

  945. call to

  946. repentance

  947. and faith.

  948. We are

  949. first of all

  950. to repent.

  951. That means

  952. we are to

  953. turn from

  954. the things

  955. that we

  956. worship and

  957. serve.

  958. Look at

  959. what it

  960. says,

  961. verse 23,

  962. throw away

  963. your gods.

  964. we must

  965. take active

  966. steps to

  967. remove

  968. whatever it

  969. is that

  970. has become

  971. the priority

  972. in our

  973. life and

  974. replace it

  975. with God.

  976. The answer

  977. to the

  978. questions that

  979. we gave

  980. earlier,

  981. what is that

  982. thing that

  983. drives you?

  984. What is it

  985. that consumes

  986. your thinking?

  987. Put it

  988. to one

  989. side and

  990. replace it

  991. with God,

  992. the only

  993. true God.

  994. Repent.

  995. second,

  996. we must

  997. have faith.

  998. That means

  999. that in

  1000. trusting,

  1001. that means

  1002. that trusting

  1003. in God,

  1004. we have

  1005. everything

  1006. that we

  1007. need.

  1008. Look at

  1009. verse 23

  1010. again,

  1011. it says,

  1012. yield your

  1013. hearts

  1014. to the

  1015. Lord.

  1016. When we

  1017. worship God,

  1018. when He

  1019. alone is

  1020. our object

  1021. of trust,

  1022. when He

  1023. alone is

  1024. the person

  1025. we look

  1026. to for

  1027. our

  1028. confidence,

  1029. we will

  1030. find that

  1031. He

  1032. fills us,

  1033. that He

  1034. satisfies

  1035. us,

  1036. that He

  1037. frees

  1038. us.

  1039. If

  1040. everything

  1041. in your

  1042. life that

  1043. surrounds

  1044. your life,

  1045. if all

  1046. of that

  1047. was to

  1048. be

  1049. zapped

  1050. in one

  1051. moment,

  1052. all taken

  1053. from you,

  1054. lose your

  1055. job,

  1056. lose your

  1057. health,

  1058. lose your

  1059. family,

  1060. and all

  1061. you're left

  1062. with is

  1063. God,

  1064. and you

  1065. can still

  1066. say,

  1067. He is

  1068. my

  1069. everything.

  1070. I am

  1071. completely

  1072. satisfied and

  1073. content because

  1074. I have

  1075. God.

  1076. in Him

  1077. we rest.

  1078. And here

  1079. is a

  1080. double action

  1081. to deal

  1082. with our

  1083. gods.

  1084. Throw

  1085. away your

  1086. gods and

  1087. yield your

  1088. hearts to

  1089. the Lord.

  1090. Now we

  1091. need to

  1092. take time

  1093. to think

  1094. this through.

  1095. What is it

  1096. that controls

  1097. us?

  1098. What is it

  1099. that you're

  1100. building your

  1101. life around?

  1102. What right

  1103. now is your

  1104. number one

  1105. desire or

  1106. priority?

  1107. What's the

  1108. dream that

  1109. you have

  1110. for life?

  1111. If it's

  1112. not God

  1113. and His

  1114. glory,

  1115. deal with

  1116. it now.

  1117. Deal with

  1118. it now.

  1119. I think

  1120. we all,

  1121. myself

  1122. included,

  1123. need to

  1124. repent

  1125. and have

  1126. faith.

  1127. look at

  1128. verse 25.

  1129. On that

  1130. day Joshua

  1131. made a

  1132. covenant

  1133. for the

  1134. people and

  1135. I'll read

  1136. again,

  1137. sorry.

  1138. On that

  1139. day Joshua

  1140. made a

  1141. covenant

  1142. for the

  1143. people and

  1144. there at

  1145. Shechem he

  1146. drew up for

  1147. them decrees

  1148. and laws.

  1149. He's saying

  1150. to the

  1151. people,

  1152. if you

  1153. keep your

  1154. promise,

  1155. if you

  1156. keep your

  1157. promise to

  1158. serve God

  1159. as you

  1160. have said,

  1161. then blessing

  1162. will come

  1163. to you.

  1164. But if

  1165. you break

  1166. your

  1167. promise,

  1168. if you

  1169. fail to

  1170. serve,

  1171. then curses

  1172. will fall

  1173. on you.

  1174. That's what's

  1175. going on

  1176. here,

  1177. verse 26.

  1178. And Joshua

  1179. recorded these

  1180. things in the

  1181. book of the

  1182. law of God

  1183. and he took

  1184. up a large

  1185. stone and

  1186. he set it

  1187. up under

  1188. the oak

  1189. near the

  1190. holy place

  1191. of the

  1192. Lord.

  1193. See,

  1194. he said

  1195. to all

  1196. the people,

  1197. this stone

  1198. will be a

  1199. witness against

  1200. us.

  1201. It has

  1202. heard all

  1203. the words

  1204. the Lord

  1205. has said

  1206. to us.

  1207. In other

  1208. words,

  1209. it serves

  1210. as a

  1211. reminder of

  1212. what's

  1213. going on

  1214. here.

  1215. It will

  1216. be a

  1217. witness

  1218. against

  1219. you if

  1220. you are

  1221. untrue

  1222. to your

  1223. God.

  1224. At the

  1225. very

  1226. site

  1227. where God

  1228. made and

  1229. kept his

  1230. promise,

  1231. the people

  1232. now make

  1233. their promise

  1234. to serve

  1235. God.

  1236. But you

  1237. know something

  1238. about this

  1239. promise?

  1240. It's

  1241. terrifying.

  1242. It's

  1243. really

  1244. terrifying.

  1245. terrifying.

  1246. Because if

  1247. they break

  1248. their promise,

  1249. if they

  1250. are untrue

  1251. to God,

  1252. if they

  1253. should fail

  1254. and begin

  1255. to serve

  1256. other gods,

  1257. then look

  1258. what happens.

  1259. Look back

  1260. at verse

  1261. 20.

  1262. If you

  1263. forsake the

  1264. Lord and

  1265. serve foreign

  1266. gods,

  1267. he will

  1268. turn and

  1269. bring disaster

  1270. on you and

  1271. make an end

  1272. of you.

  1273. That's why

  1274. it's terrifying.

  1275. And we

  1276. know the

  1277. sad history

  1278. as we

  1279. read on

  1280. through our

  1281. Bibles.

  1282. That Israel

  1283. made this

  1284. great promise,

  1285. oh, we

  1286. will serve

  1287. you, oh, we

  1288. will give our

  1289. lives to you,

  1290. oh, we

  1291. will never

  1292. turn to

  1293. anybody else.

  1294. And they

  1295. failed.

  1296. They were

  1297. untrue.

  1298. And disaster

  1299. did come.

  1300. And they

  1301. ended up in

  1302. exile.

  1303. And the

  1304. curse of

  1305. God fell

  1306. on that

  1307. nation.

  1308. And you

  1309. know what?

  1310. We are

  1311. no better.

  1312. Don't we

  1313. replace God

  1314. with God's

  1315. substitutes?

  1316. Haven't we

  1317. all made

  1318. promises?

  1319. Haven't we?

  1320. We all make

  1321. promises, I'm

  1322. going to serve

  1323. God, I'm

  1324. going to do

  1325. this, and

  1326. we fail.

  1327. And we

  1328. fail.

  1329. And it

  1330. seems that

  1331. serving this

  1332. God is an

  1333. impossible task

  1334. for us to

  1335. do.

  1336. But God

  1337. knows our

  1338. hearts.

  1339. He knows

  1340. that we are

  1341. just like

  1342. Abraham that

  1343. we read at

  1344. the beginning,

  1345. that we

  1346. worship other

  1347. gods and we

  1348. can't save

  1349. ourselves.

  1350. so that the

  1351. God that

  1352. deserves our

  1353. service, the

  1354. God who

  1355. deserves our

  1356. worship, comes

  1357. down to

  1358. serve us.

  1359. The God

  1360. who made

  1361. us and

  1362. deserves our

  1363. worship, bowed

  1364. before us.

  1365. The God who

  1366. rules over all

  1367. served us by

  1368. dying for us.

  1369. He worshipped by

  1370. obeying his

  1371. father's call and

  1372. going to the

  1373. cross.

  1374. And the

  1375. curse and

  1376. the disaster

  1377. that should

  1378. fall on us

  1379. fell on God

  1380. so that the

  1381. blessings might

  1382. come to us.

  1383. That the

  1384. blessings might

  1385. come to us

  1386. that we might

  1387. be able to

  1388. go and serve

  1389. God without

  1390. fear, without

  1391. condemnation, in

  1392. complete joy.

  1393. Tell me, the

  1394. gods that we

  1395. have, the

  1396. gods that we

  1397. worship, the

  1398. gods that we

  1399. serve, would

  1400. they die for

  1401. you?

  1402. The gods that

  1403. we make and

  1404. create, do

  1405. they love you

  1406. and would they

  1407. give their life

  1408. for you?

  1409. In your

  1410. minds, look

  1411. at the one

  1412. and only true

  1413. God as he

  1414. hangs on the

  1415. cross, broken

  1416. for you,

  1417. destroyed for

  1418. you, crushed

  1419. for you under

  1420. the weight of

  1421. God's curse.

  1422. As we

  1423. create God's

  1424. substitute, he

  1425. becomes our

  1426. substitute.

  1427. In your

  1428. mind, see the

  1429. love and the

  1430. grace and the

  1431. mercy as blood

  1432. flows from his

  1433. hands and from

  1434. his feet and

  1435. from his head

  1436. and his side.

  1437. Hear him as he

  1438. cries out on the

  1439. cross in agony

  1440. and pain.

  1441. My God, my

  1442. God, why have

  1443. you forsaken

  1444. me?

  1445. He came to

  1446. serve you.

  1447. He came to

  1448. die for me

  1449. and for you.

  1450. And listen to

  1451. his promise

  1452. that all who

  1453. come to him

  1454. will not die

  1455. but will live.

  1456. This God

  1457. served you

  1458. and this

  1459. God saved

  1460. you.

  1461. How can we

  1462. not give

  1463. our lives

  1464. in service

  1465. to such

  1466. a great

  1467. God?

  1468. Let's just

  1469. take time to

  1470. be quiet

  1471. before we

  1472. sing our

  1473. closing song.

  1474. There's a lot

  1475. to think through,

  1476. a lot to

  1477. contemplate.

  1478. but we're

  1479. just going to

  1480. have a

  1481. moment's

  1482. quietness

  1483. now.

  1484. An

  1485. opportunity

  1486. for us

  1487. to think

  1488. about the

  1489. gods that we

  1490. serve and

  1491. worship.

  1492. where do

  1493. we need

  1494. to repent?

  1495. Ask God

  1496. to forgive

  1497. you and

  1498. to replace

  1499. those gods

  1500. with the

  1501. one and

  1502. true living

  1503. God.

  1504. God.

  1505. our

  1506. Father God,

  1507. may you be

  1508. our

  1509. priority.

  1510. May you be

  1511. our desire.

  1512. May you be

  1513. what controls

  1514. us and

  1515. consumes us

  1516. every day.

  1517. Forgive us,

  1518. Lord, for the

  1519. times we put

  1520. job and

  1521. family,

  1522. even church

  1523. and other

  1524. things and

  1525. people in

  1526. front of you.

  1527. Help us to

  1528. serve you and

  1529. to worship you

  1530. as we ought.

  1531. To center our

  1532. hearts around

  1533. you and to

  1534. make you the

  1535. focus of our

  1536. lives.

  1537. Teach us what

  1538. it is to

  1539. serve you.

  1540. Thank you

  1541. that we

  1542. can serve

  1543. you.

  1544. Thank you

  1545. that Jesus

  1546. died to

  1547. take the

  1548. blame for

  1549. all of our

  1550. failure so

  1551. that we can

  1552. now go and

  1553. serve you

  1554. without fear

  1555. and in

  1556. complete joy.

  1557. Thank you

  1558. for Jesus.

  1559. Amen.

  1560. Amen.

  1561. Amen.

  1562. Amen.

  1563. Amen.

  1564. Amen.

  1565. Amen.

  1566. Amen.

  1567. Amen.
