  1. To Mark chapter 1. We've just started a new series last week, Mark chapter 1, which is found on page 1002.

Mark 1 chapter mention Mark 1 chapter mention

  2. If you're using a red-covered Bible, if you haven't got a Bible, there's plenty at the back.

  3. Page 1002, Mark chapter 1, starting at verse 14 through to verse 39.

    Mark 1 chapter mention

  4. It's good to have Dave back. Dave was away, saving lives on the beaches of Kerry, and nobody drowned.

  5. So that was good. Yeah. So, anyway, over to you, Dave.

  6. After John was put into prison, Jesus went to Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God.

  7. The time has come, he said. The kingdom of God is near. Repent and believe the good news.

  8. As Jesus walked beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew, casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen.

  9. Come, follow me, Jesus said, and I will make you fishers of men.

  10. At once they left their nets and followed him.

  11. When he had gone a little further, he saw James, son of Zebedee, and his brother John in a boat, preparing their nets.

  12. Without delay, he called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men and followed him.

  13. They went to the Capernaum, and when the Sabbath came, Jesus went into the synagogue and began to teach.

  14. The people were amazed at his teaching, because he taught them as one who had authority, not as the teachers of the law.

  15. Just then, a man in the synagogue, who was possessed by an evil spirit, cried out,

  16. What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are, the Holy One of God.

  17. Be quiet, said Jesus sternly. Come out of him.

  18. The evil spirit shook the man violently and came out of him with a shriek.

  19. The people were all so amazed that they asked each other,

  20. What is this? A new teaching, and with authority, he even gives others to evil spirits when they obey him.

  21. News about him spreads quickly over the whole region of Galilee.

  22. As soon as they left the synagogue, they went with James and John to the home of Simon and Andrew.

  23. Simon's mother-in-law was in bed with a fever, and they told Jesus about her.

  24. So he went up to her, took her hand and helped her.

  25. The fever left her, and she began to wait on them.

  26. That evening, after sunset, the people brought to Jesus all the sick and the demon-possessed.

  27. The whole town gathered at the door, and Jesus healed many who had various diseases.

  28. He drove out many demons, but he would not let the demon speak, because they knew who he was.

  29. Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house, and went off to a solitary place where he prayed.

  30. Simon and his companions went to look for him, and when they found him, they exclaimed,

  31. Everyone is looking for you.

  32. Jesus replied,

  33. Let us go somewhere else, to the nearby villages, so that I can preach there also.

  34. That is why I have come.

  35. So he travelled throughout Galilee, preaching in the synagogues and driving out demons.

  36. Thanks very much, Dave.

  37. Well, please follow along in your Bibles.

  38. Some of you may have got a sheet with headings, if not, on the back of the new sheet.

  39. You can take notes.

  40. And please do ask questions afterwards, if there's anything you want to talk through.

  41. And also, at the back on the table, there's an introduction to the Gospel of Mark, to give you a big picture of what it's all about.

  42. Well, before we get stuck into this very exciting and dramatic, action-packed text,

  43. we're going to ask for God's help as we look at it together.

  44. So let's pray.

  45. Father, because you are King, you are the God who owns all things,

  46. and therefore we ask that you would give us an appreciation of the wonder of who you are.

  47. By your Holy Spirit, speak into each of our lives, individually and together as a church family.

  48. That we would be people who are orientated around you,

  49. that your kingdom becomes our priority,

  50. and we would learn what it is,

  51. that you are King.

  52. So please encourage us all this morning.

  53. In Jesus we pray,

  54. and for his glory alone.

  55. Amen.

  56. Well, I'm sure you will all know Louis Armstrong's famous song,

  57. What a Wonderful World.

  58. It's a touching, optimistic look at what life is like.

  59. I'm not going to sing, don't worry, I haven't got a great voice.

  60. But here it goes.

  61. I see trees of green, red roses too.

  62. I see them bloom for you and for me,

  63. and I think to myself,

  64. What a wonderful world.

  65. It's a song that celebrates life at its best,

  66. or perhaps what we wish the world was really like.

  67. The colours of the rainbow so pretty in the sky

  68. are also on the faces of those going by.

  69. I see friends shaking hands saying,

  70. How do you do?

  71. They're really saying,

  72. I love you.

  73. And I think to myself,

  74. What a wonderful world.

  75. But reality sings a different song.

  76. Today, as we've been seeing on the news,

  77. marks the 10th anniversary of the 9-11 attacks.

  78. And since then, over the last decade,

  79. there have been many more terrorist attacks.

  80. More wars and genocide.

  81. There's not too many people shaking hands saying,

  82. I love you.

  83. I love you.

  84. This week, I read an article that said,

  85. 2.5 million people are trafficked into the sex industry every year.

  86. Half of whom are children,

  87. to be abused and raped at will.

  88. There's no rainbows in their sky.

  89. And as we sit in comfort in this room,

  90. with bellies full after our breakfast,

  91. a billion more live with acute malnutrition,

  92. lack of basic needs like fresh water,

  93. and suffering curable disease like HIV.

  94. Not too many roses are blooming there either.

  95. You see, looking around our world,

  96. we realise it's a disordered world,

  97. filled with broken lives.

  98. But imagine for a minute,

  99. a world where the sound of laughter

  100. replaces the cries of pain.

  101. Where people begin to embrace one another,

  102. and no gun can be found.

  103. A world where suffering and sickness is no more.

  104. Where rainbows fill the sky,

  105. replacing hurricanes and tornadoes

  106. and destructive earthquakes.

  107. A world where justice rules,

  108. where cruel dictators are banished,

  109. where evil traffickers are removed,

  110. where health and prosperity

  111. is a given for all.

  112. Look at verse 14.

  113. After John was put in prison,

  114. Jesus went into Galilee,

  115. proclaiming the good news of God.

  116. The time has come, he said.

  117. The kingdom of God is near.

  118. You see, the touching optimism of Louis Armstrong,

  119. and the dream of every one of us,

  120. becomes a reality

  121. in the coming of Jesus Christ.

  122. The promise of the prophets long ago,

  123. that the Lord would be king

  124. over the whole earth,

  125. was about to start

  126. with the coming of Jesus.

  127. Jesus came into the world with a message.

  128. He said,

  129. the kingdom of God is near.

  130. God had intervened into the world,

  131. and was about to rule in a new,

  132. and a different way.

  133. The kingdom of God meant that

  134. things were now going to be done God's way.

  135. Wrongs would be put right,

  136. justice would prevail,

  137. peace would be established,

  138. and suffering would come to an end.

  139. And those, as they gathered around Jesus,

  140. were on the verge of a new world order.

  141. And Jesus said,

  142. it's very near.

  143. Of course, little did they know

  144. that Jesus was the king,

  145. who was going to make it a reality

  146. before their very eyes.

  147. For Jesus was much more than an announcer

  148. saying to people,

  149. the kingdom is coming.

  150. Jesus was the king

  151. of this promised kingdom.

  152. Now, from our vantage point

  153. of where we are today,

  154. we can look back over all of history,

  155. and we can wonder and ask the question,

  156. has Jesus made any difference at all?

  157. As far as I can see,

  158. the world hasn't got any better.

  159. It seems to have got worse.

  160. So where is this kingdom that he's promised?

  161. And where on earth has this king gone?

  162. Well, we must read carefully

  163. what Jesus has said.

  164. Look at verse 15,

  165. the first part.

  166. Jesus said,

  167. the time has come.

  168. The coming of Jesus marked the start

  169. or the beginning of his rule.

  170. But it didn't stop there.

  171. Read on.

  172. Look what it says at the end of verse 15.

  173. He says,

  174. the kingdom of God is near.

  175. It started,

  176. but it's not yet finished.

  177. One day it's going to be fulfilled.

  178. He's saying the day is yet to come.

  179. The good news is it has started.

  180. It's near.

  181. It's close.

  182. The king is in place

  183. to bring that process about.

  184. But it one day will be fulfilled.

  185. In fact,

  186. part of all that good news is,

  187. is that Jesus was inviting people

  188. to be a part of his kingdom.

  189. The king came with a specific call.

  190. Let's read 15 again.

  191. The time has come, he said.

  192. The kingdom of God is near.

  193. Response?

  194. Repent and believe the good news.

  195. Well, what does he mean,

  196. repent and believe?

  197. Well, let's read on.

  198. Verse 16.

  199. As Jesus walked beside the Sea of Galilee,

  200. he saw Simon and his brother Andrew

  201. casting a net into the lake

  202. because they're fishermen.

  203. Come follow me, Jesus said,

  204. and I'm going to make you fishers of men.

  205. And at once they left their nets

  206. and they followed him.

  207. And when he'd gone a little further,

  208. he saw James, son of Zebedee,

  209. and his brother John in a boat

  210. preparing their nets.

  211. Without delay, he called them

  212. and they left their father Zebedee

  213. in the boat and the hired men

  214. and they followed Jesus.

  215. Now, I think this gives us a picture

  216. of what it means to repent

  217. and believe the good news.

  218. Here we've got two sets of brothers.

  219. Simon, who later becomes,

  220. we know as Peter,

  221. Simon and Andrew,

  222. and then we've got James and John.

  223. They're four hardworking blokes,

  224. down-to-earth guys,

  225. getting on with life as best they could,

  226. trying to make a living

  227. and to provide for their family.

  228. They're like the neighbour

  229. who lives across the road from you

  230. or the person in your office.

  231. But like us,

  232. and like everyone,

  233. they're called to repent and believe.

  234. Now, pay attention to what Jesus says to them

  235. and how they respond, verse 17.

  236. Jesus comes to them.

  237. He hasn't met them before,

  238. as far as we know.

  239. He says to them, verse 17,

  240. Come, follow me,

  241. and I will make you fishers of men.

  242. And look at verse 20.

  243. Without delay,

  244. he called them,

  245. and they left,

  246. and they followed him.

  247. Simon and Andrew leave their nets,

  248. implying they're leaving their work.

  249. James and John leave their father

  250. and the rest of their buddies in the boat,

  251. implying they're leaving their family

  252. and their friends behind.

  253. It's a picture of what repentance

  254. and belief is all about.

  255. It's submitting to Jesus and his rule

  256. and making Jesus and his kingdom

  257. your priority.

  258. It doesn't mean to say

  259. that we all have to leave our work

  260. and not do any work,

  261. but making him our priority.

  262. Jesus has announced

  263. the good news of the kingdom,

  264. and now he's calling people,

  265. ordinary people,

  266. like you and me,

  267. to be part of it.

  268. He's welcoming us on board.

  269. And it calls for a radical decision

  270. on our part.

  271. A decisive action

  272. that each one of us must do

  273. to turn from our own selfish wants

  274. and desires

  275. and our own plans and ambitions

  276. and making Jesus' wants and desires

  277. the rule of your life.

  278. Now let's settle on that for a minute

  279. and let's probe a little bit deeper

  280. and ask ourselves the question,

  281. what is the priority in your life?

  282. What's the priority in my life?

  283. What's your main ambition?

  284. What do you hope to achieve?

  285. A stable job, a good salary.

  286. What is it?

  287. Or here's another question.

  288. Who is your greatest desire?

  289. Who is the one that consumes you,

  290. that you love the most?

  291. Your spouse, your children,

  292. your circle of friends?

  293. Well, Jesus says,

  294. none of those things are bad.

  295. But as Jesus comes to us,

  296. he is saying,

  297. our greatest desire in life

  298. must be Jesus.

  299. Jesus,

  300. and his kingdom

  301. must be our priority.

  302. Above all else,

  303. everything else must serve those ends.

  304. In fact,

  305. he's calling us to a completely new life altogether.

  306. Look at verse 17.

  307. He says,

  308. come and follow me

  309. and I will make you fishers of men.

  310. He's calling us that whatever work we do,

  311. whatever our life situation it is,

  312. that our priority

  313. is about doing what Jesus did,

  314. inviting other people

  315. to submit to Jesus

  316. and to invite them to be part of his kingdom.

  317. So if you find yourself tomorrow morning,

  318. Monday morning,

  319. at work,

  320. with your mates

  321. and with your buddies,

  322. whoever you're with,

  323. your main priority,

  324. your main ambition

  325. is to be seeking that they come

  326. to be part of God's kingdom.

  327. If you're with children,

  328. it's about raising your kids

  329. to know who Jesus is,

  330. that he is the king

  331. and that they too

  332. would be part of his kingdom.

  333. Now we're not different

  334. to anybody else.

  335. People long for a different world.

  336. Everybody sees the same news

  337. that we see.

  338. Everybody wants suffering to end.

  339. Everybody wants a ruler

  340. who's going to bring

  341. justice and peace to this world.

  342. And the amazing thing is

  343. people who are followers of Jesus

  344. know who that king is.

  345. They know who's going to do it.

  346. And they know the kind of kingdom

  347. that he has promised to bring about.

  348. That's what makes us exciting.

  349. And Jesus proves to us

  350. that he is the king

  351. to do all of this.

  352. And he gives us a reason

  353. of why we should be following him.

  354. Look at his authority,

  355. verse 21.

  356. They went to Capernaum

  357. and when the Sabbath came,

  358. Jesus went into the synagogue,

  359. their kind of local church,

  360. and he began to teach.

  361. And it was usual

  362. for those who could

  363. read and translate Hebrew

  364. to kind of get up

  365. and teach on a Sabbath

  366. and explain what the passage meant.

  367. And so Jesus stood up

  368. and he began to talk.

  369. Except for this time

  370. it was different

  371. to anybody else

  372. who had ever stood up.

  373. Verse 22.

  374. The people were amazed

  375. at his teaching

  376. because he taught them

  377. as one who had authority,

  378. not as the teachers of the law.

  379. You see,

  380. other teachers that came along

  381. would quote various scholars

  382. and that was their authority.

  383. They would say things like,

  384. oh, Rabbi so-and-so said this

  385. and that's why it's important.

  386. But when Jesus came along,

  387. Jesus would say things like,

  388. I say to you.

  389. Or I tell you the truth.

  390. Or you do this

  391. because I tell you to do it.

  392. Jesus was claiming

  393. to be an authority himself.

  394. He didn't need anybody

  395. to back him up.

  396. He didn't need books

  397. or scholars to agree with him.

  398. Jesus was an authority.

  399. Everything that he said

  400. was authoritative.

  401. And if any of us

  402. are in doubt about his authority,

  403. read on in this story.

  404. You could imagine, okay,

  405. a gathering just like this

  406. as we are.

  407. Just then,

  408. a man in their synagogue

  409. who was possessed

  410. by an evil spirit

  411. cried out in the middle

  412. of Jesus' sermon,

  413. What do you want with us?

  414. Jesus of Nazareth.

  415. Have you come to destroy us?

  416. I know who you are,

  417. the Holy One of God.

  418. Be quiet,

  419. said Jesus sternly.

  420. Come out of him.

  421. And the evil spirit

  422. shook the man violently

  423. and came out of him

  424. with a shriek.

  425. The people were all so amazed

  426. that they asked each other,

  427. What is this?

  428. A new teaching?

  429. And with authority?

  430. He even gives orders

  431. to evil spirits

  432. and they obey him.

  433. Now it would certainly

  434. liven up a Sunday morning,

  435. wouldn't it,

  436. if that happened?

  437. And I think we would

  438. all be amazed.

  439. But there's no arguments

  440. going on here.

  441. There's no mystical mantras.

  442. There's no quiet playing

  443. of music and people

  444. waving white handkerchiefs

  445. around.

  446. It's just a simple word.

  447. Be quiet.

  448. Come out of him.

  449. Jesus confronting

  450. the servants of Satan

  451. and they not only listen,

  452. but they actually obey

  453. and they submit

  454. to his supreme authority.

  455. They do what he tells them to do.

  456. It's hardly surprising then,

  457. look at verse 28,

  458. that news about Jesus

  459. spread quickly

  460. over the whole region.

  461. Did you hear what happened

  462. in church last Sunday?

  463. Man, this guy came up

  464. did you hear about it?

  465. And all the news

  466. started to travel around.

  467. But that's not all.

  468. Look at the power

  469. of this king.

  470. Verse 29.

  471. As soon as they left

  472. the synagogue,

  473. they went with James and John

  474. to the home of Simon and Andrew.

  475. And Simon's mother-in-law

  476. was in bed with a fever.

  477. And they told Jesus about her.

  478. So he went to her,

  479. took her hand,

  480. helped her up.

  481. The fever left her

  482. and she began to wait on them.

  483. Now it's really quite extraordinary,

  484. isn't it?

  485. There's just a simple touch,

  486. a holding of the hand,

  487. there's no words,

  488. lifts her up

  489. and immediately the fever goes.

  490. The high temperature,

  491. whatever sickness it was,

  492. it's just gone.

  493. Her strength returns

  494. and she begins to go

  495. and get dinner ready

  496. for everyone.

  497. And if that doesn't amaze us,

  498. I mean,

  499. it just gets more exciting.

  500. Look at verse 32.

  501. That evening,

  502. after all the word

  503. had gone around,

  504. after sunset,

  505. the people brought to Jesus

  506. all the sick

  507. and the demon-possessed.

  508. The whole town

  509. gathered at the door

  510. and Jesus healed many

  511. who had various diseases.

  512. Now we have to step back here

  513. from the familiarity

  514. of these accounts

  515. because we've probably

  516. read this story before

  517. and we just kind of

  518. read over and go,

  519. ah, yeah, yeah,

  520. I know that.

  521. But we've got to step back

  522. and be amazed

  523. at what's going on.

  524. Today it would be like

  525. walking through CUH.

  526. going into every ward,

  527. going down to accident

  528. and emergency,

  529. going down to the cancer treatment,

  530. down to the children's ward,

  531. touching them all,

  532. speaking to them all,

  533. and one by one

  534. getting out of their beds

  535. and walking out

  536. of that hospital,

  537. leaving all their tubes

  538. and everything else behind.

  539. The hospital

  540. completely empty.

  541. Now isn't that amazing?

  542. He healed the whole town.

  543. There's no special meeting,

  544. no gimmicks,

  545. no men in white suits

  546. with their gold rings

  547. with big flashing things,

  548. donate here

  549. and you'll be healed.

  550. Just a man

  551. with supreme power,

  552. touching

  553. and healing.

  554. before their very eyes,

  555. the kingdom

  556. that Jesus announced,

  557. the kingdom

  558. that he said

  559. was near,

  560. Jesus was now

  561. beginning to

  562. demonstrate it

  563. amongst them.

  564. By his authority

  565. and by his power,

  566. he was proving

  567. that he is

  568. God's king

  569. who's come to

  570. restore broken lives

  571. and to renew

  572. this disordered world.

  573. The evil spirit

  574. that he came across,

  575. the servant of Satan

  576. knows that Jesus

  577. had come to restore

  578. broken lives.

  579. Look at what he says

  580. back in verse 24.

  581. He says,

  582. have you come

  583. to destroy us?

  584. Jesus was demonstrating

  585. that he has authority

  586. over evil,

  587. over Satan,

  588. over darkness,

  589. over his servants.

  590. He's come to destroy

  591. Satan's rule

  592. to free people

  593. and to release them

  594. from his grasp.

  595. and all the sick

  596. who had come

  597. to his door,

  598. who had come

  599. to the house,

  600. most of whom

  601. would have been poor

  602. and ostracised

  603. from society,

  604. they recognised

  605. that in Jesus

  606. there was something

  607. different.

  608. He has one

  609. who has power

  610. to renew

  611. their broken world.

  612. Where they would

  613. have been ostracised,

  614. left outside

  615. by the rest

  616. of society,

  617. now made well

  618. and brought back in.

  619. Jesus is demonstrating

  620. that he has power

  621. over all the brokenness,

  622. that he has come

  623. to fix the suffering

  624. and the pain

  625. that the world

  626. has been plagued with.

  627. He's giving them

  628. a picture.

  629. He's undoing

  630. everything that's

  631. gone wrong.

  632. Now as awesome

  633. as all this is,

  634. and it truly is,

  635. Mark, the writer,

  636. does not want us

  637. to miss

  638. the crucial points,

  639. the priorities

  640. of the king.

  641. Look at the end

  642. of verse 34.

  643. We didn't finish that off.

  644. Let's read the end

  645. of verse 34.

  646. Jesus also

  647. drove out demons,

  648. but he would not

  649. let the demons speak

  650. because they knew

  651. who he was.

  652. Now doesn't that

  653. sound rather strange?

  654. Surely the whole purpose

  655. of Jesus coming

  656. is that people

  657. would know who he is.

  658. You would think

  659. he would want

  660. as much advertisement

  661. as possible.

  662. So why is he telling

  663. him not to speak?

  664. Why is he wanting

  665. to keep it all

  666. a big secret?

  667. Well the answer

  668. I think comes

  669. as we read on,

  670. verse 35.

  671. Very early in the morning

  672. when it was still dark,

  673. Jesus got up,

  674. left his house

  675. and went off

  676. to a place

  677. on his own

  678. where he could pray.

  679. Simon and his companions

  680. went to look for him

  681. and when they found him

  682. they exclaimed,

  683. everyone is looking

  684. for you.

  685. Now it's not surprising

  686. that everybody

  687. is looking for Jesus.

  688. He's just healed

  689. a whole town.

  690. And like us,

  691. they want a miracle worker

  692. who's going to end

  693. all present suffering

  694. and end all the disease

  695. that's around the place.

  696. Ironically, however,

  697. it's the demons

  698. who know

  699. that Jesus is much more

  700. than just a miracle worker.

  701. Look back at chapter 1,

  702. verse 24.

  703. They know who he is.

  704. Look at what it says

  705. at the end.

  706. He says,

  707. I know who you are.

  708. You're the Holy One of God.

  709. But,

  710. the demons know

  711. that Jesus is

  712. the chosen one

  713. from God.

  714. The king.

  715. And Jesus then

  716. does a strange thing.

  717. He silences them.

  718. And the reason

  719. I think is,

  720. and you can come back

  721. to me on this afterwards

  722. if you want,

  723. is because

  724. he doesn't want

  725. his identity

  726. to be misunderstood

  727. as just a miracle worker.

  728. Yes,

  729. Jesus is the Son of God.

  730. Yes,

  731. he is God's king.

  732. Yes,

  733. he is a miracle worker.

  734. But the Son of God

  735. is so much more

  736. than just that.

  737. That's just the tip

  738. of the iceberg.

  739. He's far greater

  740. than all of that.

  741. Jesus is supremely

  742. concerned

  743. about present suffering.

  744. But Jesus

  745. is especially

  746. concerned

  747. about eternal suffering.

  748. You see,

  749. our priority in life

  750. is always physical

  751. and temporary.

  752. If you ask people,

  753. what's the problem?

  754. It's what's immediate

  755. and what's now.

  756. What can we do

  757. to fix it now?

  758. For Jesus,

  759. his priority

  760. was spiritual

  761. and eternal.

  762. What can we do

  763. to make life

  764. eternally right?

  765. and I think

  766. the answer

  767. comes for us

  768. as we read on

  769. verse 38.

  770. They say,

  771. everyone's looking

  772. for you.

  773. What does Jesus say?

  774. Let us go

  775. somewhere

  776. else.

  777. Away from

  778. these crowds

  779. to nearby villages

  780. so that I can

  781. preach there also.

  782. That is why

  783. I have come.

  784. His priority

  785. was to preach

  786. the good news

  787. of the kingdom,

  788. to announce it.

  789. That the kingdom

  790. of God is near.

  791. That people

  792. need to repent

  793. and that they

  794. need to believe

  795. and they need

  796. to get right

  797. with God.

  798. And I think

  799. it's important

  800. for us to

  801. understand

  802. the king's

  803. priority.

  804. The healing

  805. and the casting

  806. out of demons,

  807. it was wonderful.

  808. And it demonstrates

  809. what the kingdom

  810. would be like.

  811. A world

  812. without suffering

  813. and a world

  814. without evil.

  815. But you know

  816. what?

  817. Being physically

  818. healed,

  819. being freed

  820. from demons,

  821. wouldn't actually

  822. get you

  823. into the kingdom.

  824. The only way

  825. to qualify

  826. for God's

  827. eternal kingdom

  828. was by doing

  829. what Simon

  830. and Andrew

  831. and James

  832. and John

  833. did.

  834. They repented

  835. and they believed

  836. and they made

  837. him their priority.

  838. Jesus

  839. didn't come

  840. to relieve

  841. as many people

  842. as possible

  843. from physical

  844. suffering.

  845. He came

  846. to rescue

  847. as many people

  848. as possible

  849. from eternal

  850. suffering.

  851. Let me just

  852. give you two

  853. references

  854. for this.

  855. Chapter 2

  856. verse 17.

  857. Chapter 2

  858. verse 17.

  859. Jesus said

  860. to them,

  861. it's not the

  862. healthy who

  863. need a doctor

  864. but the sick.

  865. I have not

  866. come to call

  867. the righteous

  868. or I haven't

  869. come for people

  870. who think

  871. they're well

  872. and that they're

  873. alright.

  874. Jesus says,

  875. I've come

  876. for sinners.

  877. A spiritual

  878. problem,

  879. a heart

  880. problem,

  881. not a physical

  882. problem.

  883. look at

  884. chapter 10

  885. verse 45.

  886. Mark

    Mark 10:45

  887. chapter 10

  888. verse 45.

  889. For even

  890. the Son

  891. of Man,

  892. that's

  893. Jesus,

  894. did not

  895. come to

  896. be served.

  897. He was

  898. king,

  899. alright,

  900. but he

  901. didn't come

  902. for everybody

  903. to serve

  904. him.

  905. But as

  906. the king

  907. he came

  908. to serve.

  909. and to

  910. give his

  911. life as

  912. a ransom

  913. for many.

  914. He's

  915. talking there

  916. about his

  917. coming death.

  918. His death

  919. on the cross

  920. where he

  921. was crucified,

  922. nailed,

  923. was about

  924. dealing with

  925. the wrath

  926. of God,

  927. the judgment

  928. that we all

  929. deserve

  930. for not

  931. treating Jesus

  932. as king.

  933. and Jesus

  934. says,

  935. I'll deal

  936. with that

  937. so that

  938. I can

  939. bring you

  940. safely

  941. to my

  942. eternal

  943. kingdom

  944. where there

  945. is no

  946. suffering

  947. and no

  948. pain

  949. and where

  950. all evil

  951. is banished.

  952. Back to

  953. Mark

    Mark 1 chapter mention

  954. chapter 1.

  955. Now as

  956. much as

  957. that is

  958. Jesus'

  959. priority,

  960. it does

  961. not mean

  962. Jesus

  963. stops

  964. doing

  965. his

  966. miracles.

  967. Verse 39

  968. of chapter

  969. 1.

  970. So we

  971. travel

  972. throughout

  973. Galilee,

  974. preaching

  975. in their

  976. synagogues,

  977. announcing

  978. the good

  979. news,

  980. and driving

  981. out demons.

  982. Jesus

  983. was filled

  984. with compassion

  985. and love

  986. for the

  987. people that

  988. he came

  989. to.

  990. And he

  991. healed

  992. them.

  993. Not

  994. everybody

  995. got healed

  996. that was

  997. living at

  998. the time

  999. of Jesus.

  1000. And in

  1001. effect he

  1002. was saying,

  1003. look,

  1004. I have

  1005. come to

  1006. restore

  1007. broken

  1008. lives

  1009. and to

  1010. renew

  1011. this

  1012. disordered

  1013. world,

  1014. but if

  1015. you want

  1016. to be

  1017. part of

  1018. my

  1019. eternal

  1020. kingdom,

  1021. you've

  1022. got to

  1023. repent

  1024. and you've

  1025. got to

  1026. believe.

  1027. And here

  1028. is a

  1029. crucial

  1030. lesson

  1031. for us

  1032. as a

  1033. church.

  1034. As we

  1035. examine and

  1036. watch the

  1037. life of

  1038. Jesus,

  1039. we must

  1040. never

  1041. separate

  1042. what we

  1043. might say

  1044. demonstration

  1045. and

  1046. proclamation.

  1047. We must

  1048. never

  1049. separate

  1050. just word

  1051. and deed

  1052. and kind

  1053. of split

  1054. them apart.

  1055. Jesus

  1056. did both

  1057. and so

  1058. should we.

  1059. We should

  1060. be concerned

  1061. about the

  1062. suffering in

  1063. the world.

  1064. We should

  1065. be ministering

  1066. to the

  1067. sick and

  1068. to the

  1069. dying.

  1070. We should

  1071. practically

  1072. take steps

  1073. to rid

  1074. the world

  1075. of evils

  1076. like human

  1077. trafficking.

  1078. We should

  1079. stand for

  1080. those things.

  1081. We should

  1082. desire peace

  1083. and justice

  1084. and an end

  1085. to all

  1086. terrorism.

  1087. We should

  1088. be at the

  1089. forefront of

  1090. these things

  1091. and shouting

  1092. about it.

  1093. And we

  1094. should do

  1095. all of this

  1096. because this

  1097. is the kind

  1098. of world

  1099. that God

  1100. has promised

  1101. to bring

  1102. about.

  1103. He longs

  1104. that things

  1105. would be

  1106. put right.

  1107. But let's

  1108. get this

  1109. clear.

  1110. None of

  1111. those things

  1112. will bring

  1113. any individual

  1114. into the

  1115. kingdom of

  1116. God.

  1117. They might

  1118. point people

  1119. into the

  1120. direction,

  1121. but I won't

  1122. get them

  1123. there.

  1124. Therefore,

  1125. like Jesus,

  1126. we must be

  1127. especially

  1128. concerned about

  1129. eternal

  1130. suffering and

  1131. the priority

  1132. to announce

  1133. the good

  1134. news that

  1135. the kingdom

  1136. has come.

  1137. It's near

  1138. and we

  1139. long for the

  1140. day of

  1141. its fulfillment.

  1142. Let's pray

  1143. together.

  1144. our

  1145. Father God,

  1146. we are

  1147. truly amazed

  1148. at these

  1149. accounts

  1150. recorded for

  1151. us of

  1152. when Jesus,

  1153. the King,

  1154. walked on

  1155. this earth.

  1156. The people

  1157. that he

  1158. met,

  1159. the suffering

  1160. that he

  1161. encountered,

  1162. the changes

  1163. that he

  1164. brought

  1165. about.

  1166. It's

  1167. truly

  1168. amazing.

  1169. Lord,

  1170. impact us

  1171. afresh at

  1172. the authority

  1173. and the

  1174. power that

  1175. you have.

  1176. But help

  1177. us to

  1178. grasp and

  1179. to hear

  1180. clearly what

  1181. you are

  1182. saying.

  1183. That while

  1184. you are

  1185. concerned about

  1186. physical and

  1187. present

  1188. suffering,

  1189. you are

  1190. especially

  1191. concerned with

  1192. spiritual and

  1193. eternal

  1194. suffering,

  1195. your desire

  1196. is that none

  1197. would perish,

  1198. that none

  1199. would go

  1200. to hell,

  1201. but that

  1202. all would

  1203. turn to

  1204. you,

  1205. repent and

  1206. believe,

  1207. and find

  1208. their hope

  1209. in Jesus

  1210. Christ,

  1211. the King

  1212. over all.

  1213. Lord,

  1214. help us

  1215. if we

  1216. have not

  1217. yet done

  1218. that,

  1219. to make

  1220. Jesus our

  1221. King right

  1222. now,

  1223. to understand

  1224. the urgency

  1225. and the

  1226. priority.

  1227. And if

  1228. we have,

  1229. may we be

  1230. people who

  1231. demonstrate

  1232. your kingdom,

  1233. that we

  1234. would live

  1235. it,

  1236. that we

  1237. would proclaim

  1238. it,

  1239. point people

  1240. to Jesus,

  1241. invite them

  1242. and encourage

  1243. them and

  1244. show them

  1245. that Jesus

  1246. is the only

  1247. hope for

  1248. our broken

  1249. world and

  1250. for disordered

  1251. lives.

  1252. We ask

  1253. this in

  1254. Jesus' name.

  1255. Amen.

  1256. we're going

  1257. to sing

  1258. a song

  1259. that I've

  1260. chosen to

  1261. try and

  1262. pick up

  1263. on some

  1264. of the

  1265. themes

  1266. of the

  1267. song.
