  1. It's Mark's Gospel. As we continue in our studies, Mark's Gospel, chapter 1, from verse 40 through to verse...

  2. Sorry, let me start that again. Mark, chapter 1, verse 40, to chapter 2, verse 17, and it's on page 1002.

    Mark 1:40

  3. So I'm reading from Mark 1, 40 to 7.

  4. A man with leprosy. A man with leprosy came to him and begged him on his knees,

  5. If you are willing, you can make me clean. Filled with compassion, Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man.

  6. I am willing, he said. Be clean. Immediately the leprosy left him and he was cured.

  7. Jesus sent him away at once with a strong warning.

  8. See that you don't tell this to anyone, but go, show yourself to the priest and offer the sacrifices that Moses commanded for your cleansing, as a testimony to them.

  9. Instead, he went out and began to talk freely, spreading the news.

  10. As a result, Jesus could no longer enter a town openly, but stayed outside in lonely places.

  11. Yet the people still came to him from everywhere.

  12. A few days later, when Jesus again entered Capernaum, the people heard that he had come home.

  13. So many gathered there, many gathered that there was no room left, not even outside the door, and he preached the word to them.

  14. Some men came, bringing to him a paralytic, carried by four of them.

  15. Since they could not get him to Jesus because of the crowd, they made an opening in the roof above Jesus.

  16. And after digging through it, lowered the mat the paralyzed man was lying on.

  17. When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic,

  18. Son, your sins are forgiven.

  19. Now some teachers of the law were sitting there, thinking to themselves,

  20. Why does this fellow talk like that?

  21. He's blaspheming.

  22. Who can forgive sins but God alone?

  23. Immediately Jesus knew in his spirit that this was what they were thinking in their hearts.

  24. And he said to them,

  25. Why are you thinking these things?

  26. Which is easier, to say to the paralytic,

  27. Your sins are forgiven?

  28. Or to say, Get up, take your mat and walk?

  29. But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins.

  30. He said to the paralytic,

  31. I tell you, get up, take your mat and go home.

  32. He got up, took his mat and walked out in full view of them all.

  33. This amazed everyone.

  34. And they praised God, saying,

  35. We have never seen anything like this.

  36. Once again, Jesus went out beside the lake.

  37. A large crowd came to him, and he began to teach them.

  38. As he walked along, he saw Levi, son of Alphaeus, sitting at the tax collector's booth.

  39. Follow me, Jesus told him.

  40. And Levi got up and followed him.

  41. While Jesus was having dinner at Levi's house,

  42. many tax collectors and sinners were eating with him and his disciples,

  43. for there were many who followed him.

  44. When the teachers of the law, who were Pharisees,

  45. saw him eating with the sinners and tax collectors,

  46. they asked his disciples,

  47. Why did Jesus eat with tax collectors and sinners?

  48. On hearing this, Jesus said to them,

  49. It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick.

  50. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.

  51. Thank you guys very much for reading.

  52. Please keep your Bibles open there.

  53. And if you happen to get up very early to watch Ireland,

  54. you might want a pen in hand and a piece of paper.

  55. It will keep you concentrating and awake,

  56. if you're missing some vital sleep.

  57. Well, I don't know how you could sleep

  58. listening to these stories we've just read.

  59. They are amazing.

  60. Let's ask God for his help as we seek to look at them together.

  61. Let's pray.

  62. Our Father, we thank you again for your word.

  63. We thank you for this Gospel of Mark recorded for us,

  64. told by Peter, written down by Mark,

  65. that we can read today in our language,

  66. study it together.

  67. And our purpose for doing this, Father,

  68. is so that we would know Jesus better,

  69. that we would become more like him,

  70. that we would be changed and transformed

  71. as we encounter him in these very stories itself.

  72. May your Holy Spirit be upon us all,

  73. giving us strength physically,

  74. helping us to concentrate,

  75. and giving us spirits to take in

  76. what you are saying to us.

  77. We ask this in Jesus' name.

  78. Amen.

  79. Well, in the text that we've just had read to us,

  80. Mark is introducing us to three people,

  81. all who have been completely changed.

  82. By a simple encounter with Jesus Christ,

  83. their lives have been radically transformed.

  84. Each one seems to be in a hopeless and helpless situation,

  85. but each one comes determined and dependent,

  86. and on meeting Jesus,

  87. they are renewed and restored.

  88. Now, that shouldn't surprise us,

  89. because that is the very mission of Jesus.

  90. His mission was to come into this world

  91. to change and transform lives.

  92. Now, that's really important for us,

  93. because I don't think there's anybody here

  94. who would say,

  95. there's nothing in my life that I don't want to change.

  96. We all want things to change in our lives.

  97. Perhaps we want to change our circumstances,

  98. maybe a new job.

  99. Maybe we'll want to live somewhere different.

  100. Maybe we're wanting to change our character.

  101. Maybe we feel a little bit kind of introverted,

  102. and we want to be more confident,

  103. and being able to speak to people,

  104. and that people would accept us.

  105. Maybe we want to change our physical looks,

  106. drop a waist size,

  107. build up a bicep or something,

  108. so that people will say,

  109. they're nice.

  110. Maybe we want to change our status.

  111. We want a new partner.

  112. There's something that we would all like to change.

  113. But the problem with all of those examples

  114. that I've given is,

  115. they're all external.

  116. It all has to do with how we see ourselves,

  117. and how other people perceive us.

  118. And the people that Jesus meets here,

  119. they all seem to be concerned with external things.

  120. But as Jesus shows us,

  121. real change starts with the internal things.

  122. In fact,

  123. Jesus deals with our perceived need,

  124. the external,

  125. to demonstrate his desire,

  126. to deal with our real need,

  127. the internal.

  128. I'll read that again.

  129. That's key to our understanding of this section.

  130. Jesus deals with our perceived need,

  131. the external,

  132. to demonstrate his desire,

  133. to deal with our real need,

  134. the internal.

  135. Look at verse 17.

  136. On hearing this,

  137. Jesus said to them,

  138. it is not the healthy who need a doctor,

  139. but the sick.

  140. I have not come to call the righteous,

  141. but sinners.

  142. He's interested with heart issues.

  143. So let's meet those who encounter Jesus,

  144. and let's see how we too can be people who can change.

  145. The first person that we meet is,

  146. look at verse 40,

  147. a man with leprosy.

  148. Now if you had leprosy,

  149. it destroyed your life.

  150. It affected you physically,

  151. with sores and infections,

  152. resulting in the loss of limbs,

  153. and eyesight,

  154. and eventual death.

  155. Second, it would have affected you socially.

  156. Nobody associated with you for fear of catching the disease.

  157. You were left on your own.

  158. And third, it would affect you religiously.

  159. Anybody with a skin disease like this

  160. was not allowed anywhere near the temple

  161. where people went to worship God.

  162. You were barred.

  163. And the way of describing all of this

  164. was in one word,

  165. unclean.

  166. In Leviticus chapter 13,

    Leviticus 13 chapter mention

  167. this is just a reference for you,

  168. Leviticus 13 verse 45,

    Leviticus 13:45

  169. this is what the law said

  170. about those who had leprosy.

  171. The person with such an infectious disease

  172. must wear torn clothes,

  173. let his hair be unkempt,

  174. cover the lower part of his face,

  175. and cry out,

  176. unclean, unclean.

  177. As long as he has the infection,

  178. he remains unclean.

  179. He must live alone.

  180. He must live outside the camp.

  181. So this man with leprosy,

  182. we're not even given his name,

  183. perhaps to say just how much an outsider he was,

  184. is somebody who is in desperate need of change.

  185. So it's not surprising,

  186. look at verse 40,

  187. that he comes to Jesus,

  188. falls down on his knees,

  189. and begs Jesus,

  190. if you are willing,

  191. you can make me clean.

  192. You see,

  193. to heal his leprosy

  194. would make him clean.

  195. It would end his physical,

  196. social,

  197. and religious problems

  198. all at once.

  199. And look at Jesus' response.

  200. Verse 41,

  201. filled with compassion,

  202. Jesus reached out his hand

  203. and touched the man.

  204. I am willing,

  205. he said.

  206. Be clean.

  207. Immediately,

  208. the leprosy left him,

  209. and he was cured.

  210. Incredible.

  211. But let's not miss the point here.

  212. Jesus deals with the perceived need,

  213. the external,

  214. to demonstrate his desire

  215. to deal with our real need,

  216. the internal.

  217. Let's see how he encounters this man.

  218. First,

  219. look at what he does.

  220. Verse 41,

  221. look at how Jesus responded.

  222. Jesus reached out his hand

  223. and he touched the man.

  224. Rather than run away,

  225. remember,

  226. he was somebody

  227. if there were crowds around,

  228. would be shouting,

  229. unclean,

  230. unclean,

  231. and everybody would scarper.

  232. But not Jesus.

  233. He doesn't run away.

  234. He actually reaches out

  235. towards the man

  236. who does keep his distance

  237. by bending down on his knees.

  238. But Jesus crosses that barrier

  239. and he touches the man.

  240. Now touching him

  241. made Jesus one with him.

  242. with one touch,

  243. what the man was,

  244. Jesus became.

  245. You see,

  246. this touching

  247. was an act of identifying

  248. with the man.

  249. The man is unclean.

  250. And so Jesus now,

  251. in the act of touching,

  252. he himself becomes unclean.

  253. But he does it deliberately.

  254. It's Jesus is saying to him,

  255. I am willing to be treated

  256. as you are treated.

  257. I am willing to be shut out,

  258. to be pushed out,

  259. to be left outside,

  260. so that you can be made clean,

  261. so that you can be welcomed,

  262. brought in,

  263. and accepted.

  264. In a way,

  265. through this touching

  266. and identifying,

  267. Jesus is trading places

  268. with this man.

  269. Look at what happens

  270. in verse 45.

  271. Jesus had told him

  272. to go off to the temple.

  273. He ignores that.

  274. Verse 45,

  275. he said,

  276. instead he went out

  277. and began to talk freely,

  278. spreading the news,

  279. mixing with all the people.

  280. As a result,

  281. Jesus could no longer

  282. enter a town openly,

  283. but stayed outside

  284. in the lonely places.

  285. Do we see what's happening?

  286. Jesus,

  287. who was clean,

  288. and on the inside,

  289. walking freely with the people,

  290. has been made unclean

  291. and pushed outside.

  292. The unclean leper,

  293. who was on the outside,

  294. has now been made clean,

  295. and he's walking freely

  296. amongst the people,

  297. accepted.

  298. What's Jesus doing here?

  299. Well, yes,

  300. he does heal this man.

  301. Externally,

  302. all those things

  303. are dealt with,

  304. but I think Jesus

  305. is teaching us

  306. something through this.

  307. This encounter

  308. is a picture

  309. of what Jesus sees

  310. as our real need.

  311. for Jesus knew

  312. that he came

  313. to go to the cross.

  314. And we can picture

  315. Christ on the cross now

  316. with his arms nailed,

  317. spread out.

  318. And with arms spread out,

  319. he is seeking

  320. to reach out,

  321. to cross the barriers,

  322. coming from heaven to earth,

  323. to cross over,

  324. to touch the world.

  325. And through the cross,

  326. what is he doing

  327. but identifying with us?

  328. Jesus comes

  329. to take our uncleanness,

  330. not just the external,

  331. but something greater

  332. and bigger,

  333. the uncleanness

  334. of our sin,

  335. our rebellion.

  336. And he is shut out

  337. from God

  338. for us.

  339. He is pushed outside

  340. to the extremes,

  341. to hell itself

  342. for us.

  343. so that you and I

  344. could be forgiven,

  345. so that we could be

  346. made clean,

  347. so that we could be

  348. welcomed in.

  349. He is trading places

  350. with us.

  351. He is changing us

  352. on the inside

  353. so that we can be

  354. accepted by the Father.

  355. And Jesus transforms us

  356. as he did this man.

  357. He transforms us

  358. so that we can have

  359. a new life externally.

  360. look at how this man's

  361. life is changed,

  362. verse 45.

  363. He went out

  364. and began to talk

  365. freely,

  366. spreading the news.

  367. And that's the work

  368. that he does.

  369. He changes us

  370. in the inside

  371. and he gives us

  372. a new picture,

  373. a new vision

  374. of what life

  375. is all about.

  376. A life where we

  377. can talk freely.

  378. A life where we

  379. can begin to share

  380. and live out

  381. the message of

  382. Jesus Christ.

  383. That's what this

  384. new life is all about.

  385. This man was

  386. radically changed

  387. and radically

  388. transformed.

  389. The second person

  390. that we meet

  391. is a man who

  392. can't walk.

  393. Look at chapter 2,

  394. verse 1.

  395. A few days later

  396. when Jesus again

  397. entered Capernaum,

  398. the people heard

  399. that he had come

  400. home.

  401. So many gathered

  402. that there was

  403. no room left,

  404. not even outside

  405. the door,

  406. and he preached

  407. the word to them.

  408. Some men came

  409. bringing to him

  410. a paralytic,

  411. carried by four

  412. of them.

  413. Now obviously

  414. these guys had

  415. heard about

  416. Jesus,

  417. the healer.

  418. The last time

  419. he was in Capernaum,

  420. back in chapter 1,

  421. verse 32,

  422. Jesus had healed

  423. all the people

  424. who were there,

  425. all those who

  426. had come to him.

  427. Now this poor man,

  428. obviously he's been

  429. left out,

  430. he missed out

  431. on the big healing

  432. thing,

  433. and so he's

  434. determined to

  435. get to Jesus.

  436. Verse 4.

  437. So since they

  438. couldn't get him

  439. to Jesus because

  440. of the crowds,

  441. they made an

  442. opening in the

  443. roof above Jesus

  444. and after digging

  445. through it,

  446. lowered the mat

  447. the paralysed man

  448. was lying on.

  449. Now imagine

  450. the scene,

  451. put yourself there.

  452. This crowded house,

  453. they can't get in

  454. from either way,

  455. either from the

  456. back door,

  457. the front door,

  458. or wherever.

  459. So they go out

  460. round the side,

  461. up the steps,

  462. and onto the

  463. flat roof.

  464. And flat roofs

  465. were just made

  466. of dirt and

  467. all sorts of

  468. things.

  469. And then with

  470. implements,

  471. I don't know,

  472. bit of stick in

  473. their hands,

  474. they start digging

  475. and digging,

  476. and they break

  477. through.

  478. And the crowds

  479. below,

  480. and they look up

  481. and there's dust

  482. and dirt falling

  483. in their eyes,

  484. and then this

  485. man is literally

  486. lowered down,

  487. forcing the

  488. crowd back

  489. as he plunks

  490. himself right

  491. in front of

  492. Jesus,

  493. determined

  494. to get

  495. healing.

  496. Now what Jesus

  497. does is rather

  498. surprising.

  499. Jesus deals

  500. with his

  501. perceived need,

  502. the external,

  503. to prove his

  504. authority to deal

  505. with our real

  506. need,

  507. the internal.

  508. Excuse me.

  509. Jesus deals

  510. with the

  511. perceived need,

  512. the external,

  513. to prove his

  514. authority to deal

  515. with our real

  516. need,

  517. the internal.

  518. Have a look

  519. here again at

  520. how he interacts.

  521. Now I know

  522. we know the

  523. story,

  524. but what would

  525. we expect

  526. Jesus to do

  527. next,

  528. when somebody

  529. falls down

  530. in front of

  531. them who

  532. can't walk?

  533. Well from

  534. our reading

  535. so far in

  536. Mark,

  537. we expect

  538. that he's

  539. going to

  540. tell the

  541. man,

  542. get up

  543. and walk.

  544. That's what

  545. we would

  546. expect him

  547. to do,

  548. but look

  549. what he

  550. says,

  551. verse 5.

  552. When

  553. Jesus saw

  554. their faith,

  555. he said

  556. to the

  557. paralytic,

  558. son,

  559. your sins

  560. are forgiven.

  561. Now this

  562. man and

  563. his friends,

  564. they've all

  565. gotten together,

  566. they've shown

  567. great faith.

  568. They're going

  569. to go to

  570. any lengths

  571. to get to

  572. Jesus,

  573. even if that

  574. means knocking

  575. down the

  576. roof.

  577. They're

  578. determined,

  579. they're

  580. dependent on

  581. getting to

  582. him.

  583. And that's

  584. what Jesus

  585. sees.

  586. That's

  587. primarily what

  588. he's seeing.

  589. He sees

  590. genuine faith.

  591. faith.

  592. Because faith

  593. isn't just

  594. knowing about

  595. Jesus,

  596. knowing that

  597. he can do

  598. all of these

  599. things,

  600. but an

  601. act of

  602. trust that

  603. he alone

  604. can meet

  605. our deepest

  606. need.

  607. And Jesus

  608. sees this

  609. kind of

  610. faith in

  611. this man.

  612. And he

  613. sees this

  614. kind of

  615. faith that

  616. is required

  617. to bring

  618. about an

  619. internal

  620. healing.

  621. And because

  622. he sees

  623. that faith,

  624. he responds

  625. differently and

  626. he says,

  627. your sins

  628. are forgiven.

  629. Now I'm

  630. quite sure

  631. the man

  632. would have

  633. been blown

  634. away by

  635. what Jesus

  636. said.

  637. Quite

  638. shocked.

  639. What's

  640. going on

  641. here?

  642. What do

  643. you mean

  644. my sins

  645. are forgiven?

  646. The paralytic

  647. never came

  648. to Jesus

  649. because he

  650. believed he

  651. needed his

  652. sins forgiven.

  653. He came

  654. because he

  655. wanted his

  656. paralysis

  657. healed.

  658. And it

  659. shows us

  660. that while

  661. we're

  662. concerned with

  663. external

  664. things,

  665. Jesus is

  666. primarily

  667. concerned with

  668. the internal.

  669. After all,

  670. this has

  671. been his

  672. message,

  673. chapter 1,

  674. verse 15.

  675. The time

  676. has come,

  677. he said.

  678. The kingdom

  679. of God

  680. is near.

  681. Repent

  682. and believe

  683. the good

  684. news,

  685. the good

  686. news that

  687. we can

  688. confess we

  689. can be

  690. forgiven and

  691. welcomed into

  692. his kingdom.

  693. freedom.

  694. And so

  695. Jesus,

  696. seeing this

  697. real faith,

  698. genuine

  699. faith,

  700. is willing

  701. to forgive

  702. the man

  703. his sins.

  704. Now,

  705. what Jesus

  706. has just

  707. done and

  708. said has

  709. upset the

  710. religious leaders.

  711. Verse 6.

  712. Some of the

  713. teachers of the

  714. law were

  715. sitting there

  716. thinking to

  717. themselves,

  718. why does

  719. this fellow

  720. talk like

  721. that?

  722. He's

  723. blaspheming.

  724. Who can

  725. forgive sins

  726. but God

  727. alone?

  728. Well, of course,

  729. they were right,

  730. weren't they?

  731. The forgiveness

  732. of sins is the

  733. exclusive right of

  734. God.

  735. No one else has

  736. that right to

  737. forgive sins.

  738. And here's this

  739. man claiming to

  740. forgive sins.

  741. Verse 8.

  742. Immediately,

  743. Jesus knew in

  744. his spirit that

  745. this is what

  746. they were

  747. thinking in

  748. their hearts.

  749. And he

  750. said to

  751. them,

  752. why are you

  753. thinking these

  754. things?

  755. You see,

  756. he not only

  757. sees the

  758. need of

  759. the paralytic,

  760. but he

  761. sees the

  762. true condition

  763. of everybody

  764. else's heart.

  765. He sees

  766. your heart.

  767. He sees my

  768. heart right

  769. now.

  770. He knows

  771. what we're

  772. thinking,

  773. what's going

  774. on.

  775. And knowing

  776. what they're

  777. thinking,

  778. Jesus sets

  779. out to

  780. prove that

  781. he can

  782. forgive.

  783. Verse 9.

  784. So he

  785. says,

  786. which is

  787. easier to

  788. say to

  789. the

  790. paralytic?

  791. Your sins

  792. are forgiven

  793. or get

  794. up and take

  795. your mat

  796. and walk?

  797. Well,

  798. again,

  799. the answer

  800. is simple.

  801. It's much

  802. easier to

  803. say your

  804. sins are

  805. forgiven because

  806. it can't be

  807. proven wrong.

  808. I could say

  809. to any of

  810. you,

  811. I can say

  812. to curse,

  813. curse,

  814. your sins

  815. are forgiven.

  816. You've a lot

  817. of them.

  818. Your sins

  819. are forgiven.

  820. You don't

  821. know.

  822. You don't

  823. know if

  824. they're

  825. forgiven.

  826. You can't

  827. prove it.

  828. On the

  829. other hand,

  830. it's much

  831. more difficult

  832. to say,

  833. get up and

  834. take your

  835. mat and

  836. walk.

  837. Because if

  838. I say

  839. that,

  840. or take

  841. my daughter,

  842. for example,

  843. she can't

  844. hear.

  845. Say,

  846. you're healed.

  847. You can

  848. hear.

  849. you'd

  850. have to

  851. prove it,

  852. wouldn't

  853. you?

  854. So,

  855. Jesus

  856. proves he

  857. can forgive

  858. sins by

  859. providing

  860. evidence.

  861. Verse 10,

  862. so he

  863. says,

  864. but that

  865. you may

  866. know that

  867. the Son

  868. of Man,

  869. and that's

  870. a title of

  871. great authority,

  872. that the

  873. Son of Man

  874. has authority

  875. on earth

  876. with you

  877. to forgive

  878. sins,

  879. he said to

  880. the paralytic,

  881. I tell you,

  882. get up,

  883. take your

  884. mat and

  885. go home.

  886. And he

  887. got up and

  888. he took

  889. his mat and

  890. he walked

  891. out in

  892. full view

  893. of them

  894. all.

  895. Amazing.

  896. And again,

  897. Jesus is

  898. teaching us

  899. through this,

  900. of what he

  901. sees as our

  902. real need.

  903. He isn't

  904. just somebody

  905. who comes

  906. to heal

  907. the external

  908. as great

  909. and as

  910. wonderful

  911. as it

  912. is,

  913. but he

  914. comes to

  915. heal the

  916. internal.

  917. We were

  918. looking at

  919. this very

  920. passage with

  921. some of

  922. the crusader

  923. groups on

  924. Friday night

  925. and I

  926. said to

  927. them,

  928. if you're

  929. lame,

  930. if you

  931. can't walk,

  932. does that

  933. get you

  934. into heaven?

  935. Does that

  936. get you

  937. to be part

  938. of the

  939. kingdom?

  940. No,

  941. it doesn't.

  942. If you're

  943. made well,

  944. does that

  945. get you

  946. into the

  947. kingdom?

  948. No.

  949. But if

  950. you're

  951. forgiven,

  952. does that

  953. get you

  954. into the

  955. kingdom?

  956. It does.

  957. You can

  958. have your

  959. sins forgiven

  960. and be

  961. lame and

  962. be in

  963. the

  964. kingdom.

  965. You see,

  966. he sees,

  967. he shows

  968. us that

  969. he has

  970. the ability

  971. to forgive

  972. sins.

  973. He proves

  974. he has

  975. the authority

  976. to forgive

  977. sins because

  978. this is

  979. most important.

  980. And in

  981. offering

  982. forgiveness,

  983. he is

  984. looking for

  985. the active

  986. faith,

  987. the faith

  988. that he

  989. could see

  990. that people

  991. were determined

  992. and dependent,

  993. trusting that

  994. Jesus alone

  995. can meet

  996. our deepest

  997. need.

  998. the third

  999. person that

  1000. we meet

  1001. is a

  1002. corrupt,

  1003. greedy

  1004. taxman.

  1005. Look at

  1006. verse 13.

  1007. Once again,

  1008. Jesus went

  1009. out beside

  1010. the lake.

  1011. A large

  1012. crowd came

  1013. to him

  1014. and he

  1015. began to

  1016. teach them.

  1017. As he

  1018. walked along,

  1019. he saw

  1020. Levi,

  1021. son of

  1022. Alphaeus,

  1023. sitting at

  1024. the tax

  1025. collector's

  1026. booth.

  1027. Now,

  1028. tax collectors

  1029. are thought

  1030. of in the

  1031. same way

  1032. I would

  1033. imagine as

  1034. developers and

  1035. bankers are

  1036. in our

  1037. country.

  1038. They're not

  1039. the most

  1040. popular,

  1041. despised,

  1042. hated.

  1043. They're to

  1044. blame for

  1045. everything.

  1046. And Levi's

  1047. job was to

  1048. collect tax

  1049. from his

  1050. own people

  1051. and from

  1052. any of the

  1053. traders who

  1054. were coming

  1055. into the

  1056. town.

  1057. He would

  1058. collect all

  1059. of this tax

  1060. and then it

  1061. would be

  1062. handed over

  1063. to the

  1064. Romans,

  1065. the occupying

  1066. enemy.

  1067. He was

  1068. working for

  1069. the other

  1070. side.

  1071. And the

  1072. way Levi

  1073. was paid

  1074. was by

  1075. charging a

  1076. bit extra

  1077. and putting

  1078. it into

  1079. his pocket.

  1080. Not a

  1081. nice character.

  1082. A historian

  1083. by the name

  1084. of Philo

  1085. writing in

  1086. 40 AD,

  1087. this is what

  1088. he said about

  1089. tax collectors.

  1090. When they

  1091. came,

  1092. they were

  1093. poor men.

  1094. But they

  1095. amassed much

  1096. wealth in

  1097. various forms

  1098. by defrauding

  1099. and embezzling

  1100. the people.

  1101. They weren't

  1102. nice characters.

  1103. They were

  1104. banned from

  1105. the synagogue.

  1106. They weren't

  1107. allowed in with

  1108. the others.

  1109. They were a

  1110. cause of

  1111. disgrace to

  1112. the family.

  1113. Nobody wanted

  1114. a tax collector

  1115. as their

  1116. friend.

  1117. That's the

  1118. kind of

  1119. person we're

  1120. dealing with

  1121. here.

  1122. And once

  1123. again, we

  1124. see how

  1125. Jesus deals

  1126. with this

  1127. man.

  1128. It's so

  1129. surprising.

  1130. It's

  1131. scandalous.

  1132. It's

  1133. shocking.

  1134. But before

  1135. we see how

  1136. Jesus interacts

  1137. with them,

  1138. we want to

  1139. introduce some

  1140. other people

  1141. and their

  1142. key to this

  1143. story.

  1144. They've been

  1145. mingling in

  1146. the crowd

  1147. back in

  1148. verse 6.

  1149. The teachers

  1150. of the law.

  1151. The Pharisees.

  1152. We see

  1153. them in

  1154. verse 16.

  1155. The teachers

  1156. of the law

  1157. who were

  1158. Pharisees saw

  1159. him eating

  1160. with the

  1161. sinners and

  1162. tax collectors.

  1163. So they're

  1164. following.

  1165. They're amongst

  1166. the crowd.

  1167. They're observing

  1168. what's going

  1169. on.

  1170. And because

  1171. of their

  1172. very careful

  1173. study of

  1174. God's law,

  1175. because of

  1176. the way they

  1177. dressed, the

  1178. way they

  1179. conducted

  1180. themselves in

  1181. society,

  1182. they disapproved

  1183. of all those

  1184. other people.

  1185. They thought

  1186. of themselves

  1187. as deserving

  1188. and righteous,

  1189. after all,

  1190. they read

  1191. their Bibles

  1192. and they

  1193. encouraged

  1194. people to

  1195. read their

  1196. Bibles and

  1197. they told

  1198. people where

  1199. they weren't

  1200. living up to

  1201. the Bible.

  1202. They were

  1203. loved by God

  1204. and accepted

  1205. by God.

  1206. And it was

  1207. people like

  1208. that that

  1209. deserved the

  1210. attention.

  1211. Externally,

  1212. they've got it

  1213. all so right

  1214. and together.

  1215. together.

  1216. Now those

  1217. are the

  1218. people that

  1219. we've got.

  1220. And Jesus

  1221. wants to

  1222. teach us

  1223. something through

  1224. this.

  1225. Jesus responds

  1226. with grace

  1227. to those who

  1228. see their

  1229. real needs,

  1230. the internal,

  1231. while he

  1232. refuses grace

  1233. to those who

  1234. rely on their

  1235. good efforts,

  1236. the external.

  1237. Did you get

  1238. that?

  1239. He responds

  1240. with grace to

  1241. those who see

  1242. their real need,

  1243. the internal,

  1244. while he

  1245. refuses grace

  1246. to those who

  1247. rely on their

  1248. good efforts,

  1249. the external.

  1250. Again, let's

  1251. look at how

  1252. he interacts.

  1253. Verse 14.

  1254. As he walked

  1255. along, he saw

  1256. Levi, son of

  1257. Alphaeus, sitting

  1258. at the tax

  1259. collector's booth.

  1260. Follow me,

  1261. Jesus told him.

  1262. And Levi got

  1263. up and

  1264. followed him.

  1265. It's shocking.

  1266. We've got to

  1267. get our minds

  1268. around it.

  1269. He is

  1270. undeserving.

  1271. He is

  1272. unrighteous.

  1273. He is a

  1274. greedy and

  1275. defrauding

  1276. tax man.

  1277. And what

  1278. does Jesus

  1279. do?

  1280. He says,

  1281. come on

  1282. Levi, follow

  1283. me.

  1284. An outsider

  1285. who worked

  1286. for the

  1287. enemy, hated

  1288. by society,

  1289. is called

  1290. to follow

  1291. God's

  1292. king.

  1293. There's

  1294. nothing in

  1295. his life

  1296. that deserves

  1297. such a

  1298. call.

  1299. But that's

  1300. what grace

  1301. is.

  1302. Grace is

  1303. scandalous.

  1304. grace takes

  1305. the initiative.

  1306. It doesn't

  1307. wait for

  1308. people to

  1309. come to

  1310. him.

  1311. He took

  1312. the initiative.

  1313. Christ did

  1314. by coming

  1315. into this

  1316. world, by

  1317. approaching

  1318. people and

  1319. going to

  1320. people.

  1321. He makes

  1322. the moves

  1323. and he

  1324. calls a

  1325. rebellious

  1326. person like

  1327. Levi and

  1328. says, come

  1329. and follow

  1330. me.

  1331. what happens

  1332. next is

  1333. even more

  1334. scandalous.

  1335. Verse 15.

  1336. Jesus is

  1337. having dinner

  1338. at Levi's

  1339. house and

  1340. many tax

  1341. collectors and

  1342. sinners were

  1343. eating with

  1344. him and

  1345. his disciples,

  1346. for there

  1347. were many

  1348. who followed

  1349. him.

  1350. the sinners

  1351. were the

  1352. people who

  1353. not only

  1354. disobeyed

  1355. the law,

  1356. well they

  1357. just lived

  1358. completely

  1359. outside the

  1360. law.

  1361. They had

  1362. nothing to

  1363. do with

  1364. it.

  1365. They wanted

  1366. nothing to

  1367. do with

  1368. it.

  1369. They were

  1370. murderers,

  1371. violent

  1372. people,

  1373. thieves,

  1374. prostitutes,

  1375. drug dealers,

  1376. abusers.

  1377. They were all

  1378. there gathered

  1379. together,

  1380. wheeling and

  1381. dealing with

  1382. each other.

  1383. They hung

  1384. out with

  1385. each other.

  1386. And where's

  1387. Jesus?

  1388. Jesus,

  1389. do you see

  1390. where he is?

  1391. Sat right

  1392. down in the

  1393. middle of

  1394. them,

  1395. eating dinner

  1396. with them.

  1397. Not because

  1398. he was forced

  1399. to, but

  1400. because he

  1401. wants to.

  1402. Willingly,

  1403. he's sitting

  1404. down amongst

  1405. them.

  1406. Now,

  1407. eating with

  1408. such people

  1409. was a sign

  1410. of solidarity.

  1411. It wasn't a

  1412. case of endorsing

  1413. their behaviour

  1414. and saying,

  1415. ah, it's

  1416. alright what

  1417. you do,

  1418. it doesn't

  1419. matter.

  1420. But it

  1421. was a sign

  1422. of his

  1423. solidarity

  1424. with alienated

  1425. and needy

  1426. people.

  1427. You see,

  1428. Jesus' act

  1429. of calling

  1430. Levi,

  1431. the very act

  1432. of going

  1433. into his

  1434. house and

  1435. sitting down

  1436. and having

  1437. food with

  1438. all of his

  1439. friends,

  1440. is sending

  1441. a signal to

  1442. all the rest

  1443. of the people,

  1444. to all the

  1445. other sinners,

  1446. people like

  1447. you and me,

  1448. that they

  1449. too,

  1450. you too,

  1451. are called

  1452. to follow

  1453. Christ.

  1454. I've

  1455. come for

  1456. you.

  1457. Well,

  1458. of course,

  1459. such an

  1460. act didn't

  1461. go unnoticed,

  1462. did it,

  1463. by these

  1464. ever-watching

  1465. Pharisees

  1466. sitting on

  1467. the outside.

  1468. I bet

  1469. they were

  1470. hungry,

  1471. but they

  1472. couldn't

  1473. bring

  1474. themselves

  1475. to eat

  1476. with such

  1477. people.

  1478. Verse

  1479. 16,

  1480. when the

  1481. teachers

  1482. of the

  1483. law,

  1484. who were

  1485. Pharisees,

  1486. saw him

  1487. eating with

  1488. the sinners

  1489. and the

  1490. tax collectors,

  1491. they asked

  1492. his disciples,

  1493. why does

  1494. he eat

  1495. with tax

  1496. collectors and

  1497. sinners?

  1498. don't we

  1499. think that

  1500. the external

  1501. is what

  1502. really counts?

  1503. Good

  1504. behaviour,

  1505. separation

  1506. from bad

  1507. people,

  1508. standing back

  1509. from all

  1510. those terrible

  1511. lifestyles,

  1512. sitting and

  1513. reading your

  1514. own Bible,

  1515. meditating on

  1516. the Lord,

  1517. singing worship

  1518. songs,

  1519. isn't that what

  1520. it's about?

  1521. But for

  1522. Jesus,

  1523. what counts

  1524. is the

  1525. internal.

  1526. Look at

  1527. verse 17,

  1528. on hearing

  1529. this,

  1530. Jesus said

  1531. to them,

  1532. it is not

  1533. the healthy

  1534. who need a

  1535. doctor,

  1536. but the

  1537. sick.

  1538. I have

  1539. not come

  1540. to call

  1541. the righteous,

  1542. but sinners.

  1543. The sick

  1544. are welcome,

  1545. the sinners,

  1546. the disobedient,

  1547. the rebellious.

  1548. They are

  1549. the ones

  1550. who are

  1551. welcome to

  1552. join in

  1553. and to

  1554. follow Jesus.

  1555. They're the

  1556. ones who

  1557. are accepted.

  1558. He's saying

  1559. and sending

  1560. out a clear

  1561. message,

  1562. that I have

  1563. not come

  1564. for those

  1565. who think

  1566. they are

  1567. deserving

  1568. and righteous,

  1569. but I've

  1570. come for

  1571. those who

  1572. are undeserving

  1573. and unrighteous.

  1574. Just as a

  1575. doctor would

  1576. never turn

  1577. away a sick

  1578. person,

  1579. so Jesus

  1580. is never

  1581. going to

  1582. turn away

  1583. a sinner,

  1584. no matter

  1585. how rebellious,

  1586. no matter

  1587. what they

  1588. do,

  1589. how often

  1590. they do

  1591. it,

  1592. it doesn't

  1593. matter.

  1594. Because Jesus

  1595. responds with

  1596. grace to

  1597. those who

  1598. see their

  1599. internal need

  1600. while he

  1601. refuses grace

  1602. to those who

  1603. rely on their

  1604. external efforts

  1605. and think that

  1606. they are above

  1607. everybody else

  1608. and so different.

  1609. There is no

  1610. grace there.

  1611. One writer

  1612. put it like

  1613. this,

  1614. ironically,

  1615. he says,

  1616. in one

  1617. sense,

  1618. great sinners

  1619. stand

  1620. closer to

  1621. God

  1622. than those

  1623. who think

  1624. themselves

  1625. righteous,

  1626. for sinners

  1627. are more

  1628. aware of

  1629. their need

  1630. of God's

  1631. transforming

  1632. grace.

  1633. If you're

  1634. aware of

  1635. your internal

  1636. need,

  1637. you are

  1638. closer to

  1639. God

  1640. than if you

  1641. think,

  1642. I am

  1643. better and

  1644. superior.

  1645. three people

  1646. who encounter

  1647. Jesus and

  1648. their lives

  1649. are changed,

  1650. transformed

  1651. radically,

  1652. and it

  1653. shows us

  1654. not only

  1655. how we

  1656. can change,

  1657. but it

  1658. shows us

  1659. how we

  1660. can bring

  1661. change to

  1662. the world.

  1663. Because the

  1664. world is

  1665. fixated on

  1666. the external,

  1667. all the

  1668. outside

  1669. things,

  1670. how I

  1671. see myself,

  1672. how others

  1673. perceive me,

  1674. that's what's

  1675. important.

  1676. Jesus says,

  1677. no,

  1678. it's what I

  1679. see,

  1680. that's what's

  1681. important.

  1682. I don't have

  1683. time to go

  1684. through all

  1685. of it,

  1686. but let me

  1687. just say

  1688. this,

  1689. as we go

  1690. into this

  1691. week,

  1692. let's be

  1693. Christ

  1694. where we

  1695. go.

  1696. Let's be

  1697. reaching

  1698. out,

  1699. reach across

  1700. the barriers,

  1701. touching.

  1702. accepting,

  1703. eating,

  1704. welcoming,

  1705. and let's

  1706. point people

  1707. as we point

  1708. ourselves and

  1709. one another

  1710. continually to

  1711. our amazing

  1712. Saviour,

  1713. who with

  1714. compassion

  1715. identifies with

  1716. us.

  1717. With

  1718. authority,

  1719. he will

  1720. forgive all

  1721. our sins,

  1722. and with

  1723. grace,

  1724. calls us

  1725. to follow

  1726. him and

  1727. be part of

  1728. what he is

  1729. doing.

  1730. This is

  1731. the Christ

  1732. that came

  1733. into the

  1734. world,

  1735. and this

  1736. is the

  1737. Christ we

  1738. are to

  1739. bring into

  1740. the world,

  1741. and we've

  1742. got to

  1743. live it.

  1744. Let's pray

  1745. together.

  1746. we are

  1747. just amazed

  1748. at Christ

  1749. who comes

  1750. to us

  1751. in grace,

  1752. in

  1753. compassion,

  1754. reaching

  1755. across,

  1756. reaching into

  1757. our lives,

  1758. wherever we

  1759. are,

  1760. whatever we've

  1761. done,

  1762. to change

  1763. us and

  1764. transform

  1765. us.

  1766. Father,

  1767. help us

  1768. to know

  1769. afresh the

  1770. wonder of

  1771. your

  1772. forgiveness,

  1773. but help

  1774. us to go

  1775. now like

  1776. Christ into

  1777. the world.

  1778. Help us to

  1779. do what

  1780. Jesus did,

  1781. to reach

  1782. across those

  1783. barriers,

  1784. to touch,

  1785. to identify,

  1786. to sit

  1787. and eat,

  1788. to be

  1789. amongst the

  1790. world,

  1791. to be with

  1792. people,

  1793. to point

  1794. them towards

  1795. Christ,

  1796. that we

  1797. are all

  1798. in need

  1799. of grace,

  1800. we are all

  1801. in need

  1802. of forgiveness,

  1803. and it's

  1804. only Christ

  1805. who can

  1806. change us

  1807. on the

  1808. inside,

  1809. and give

  1810. us a

  1811. brighter

  1812. future.

  1813. So please

  1814. help us,

  1815. we pray,

  1816. in Jesus'

  1817. name,

  1818. Amen.
