  1. I'm sorry, I haven't asked anybody, but I'm going to ask Ryan.

  2. Do you mind reading?

  3. Is that okay?

  4. You've got a voice?

  5. Mark 3, verse 7.

    Mark 3:7

  6. Crowds followed Jesus.

  7. Jesus went up on a mountainside and called to him those he wanted, and they came to him.

  8. He appointed twelve, designating them apostles, that they might be with him, and that he might send them out to preach and to have authority to drive out demons.

  9. These are the twelve he appointed.

  10. Simon, to whom he gave the name Peter.

  11. James, son of Zebedee, and his brother John.

  12. To them he gave the name Bonerges, which means son of thunder.

  13. Andrew, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James, son of Alphaeus, Thaddeus, Simon the Zealot, and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him.

  14. Then Jesus entered a house, and again a crowd gathered, so that he and his disciples were not even able to eat.

  15. When his family heard about this, they went to take charge of him, for they said, he is out of his mind.

  16. And the teachers of the law, who came down from Jerusalem, said, he is possessed by Beelzebub.

  17. By the prince of demons he is driving out demons.

  18. So Jesus called them and spoke to them in parables.

  19. How can Satan drive out Satan?

  20. If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand.

  21. If a house is divided against itself, that house cannot stand.

  22. And if Satan opposes himself and is divided, he cannot stand.

  23. His end has come.

  24. In fact, no one can enter a strong man's house and carry off his possessions unless he first ties up the strong man.

  25. Then he can rob his house.

  26. I tell you the truth, all the sins and blasphemies of men will be forgiven them.

  27. But whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven.

  28. He is guilty of an eternal sin.

  29. He said this because they were saying, he has an evil spirit.

  30. Then Jesus' mother and brothers arrived.

  31. Standing outside, they sent someone in to call him.

  32. A crowd was sitting around him, and they told him,

  33. your mother and brothers are outside looking for you.

  34. Who are my mother and my brothers, he asked.

  35. Then he looked at those seated in a circle around him and said,

  36. here are my mother and my brothers.

  37. Whoever does God's will is my brother and sister and mother.

  38. Sorry, there are some sheets going around.

  39. If anybody wants to take notes, we encourage people to do that.

  40. You can either take notes on the back of your new sheet,

  41. or there's some headed paper.

  42. Somebody mind getting the box of pens?

  43. I think they're in the cupboard somewhere.

  44. Thank you, Yelena.

  45. And if you have any questions at the end,

  46. we haven't got to the point of interrupting the talk just yet.

  47. But if you really have to, you can put up your hand,

  48. and you can interrupt, and I might answer.

  49. I might just say, wait until the end afterwards.

  50. But all I'm doing is asking and encouraging you

  51. to think through what we're talking at, what we're looking at,

  52. and to ask questions afterwards, and to think through it together.

  53. So we're looking at Mark's Gospel.

  54. Thank you, Yelena.

  55. There's pens there.

  56. If anybody would like a pen, just put up your hand.

  57. And the question that we're going to start with this morning

  58. is this, Satan, real or make-believe?

  59. And it's simply this.

  60. Do you believe in Satan?

  61. That's a big question, isn't it?

  62. Do you believe in Satan?

  63. Well, before we answer that, we're going to pray.

  64. Why don't we pray?

  65. Lord, we thank you for this day.

  66. We thank you for your help to us so far.

  67. And as we read your word, as we look at it together,

  68. we still need your help.

  69. We need the help of your Holy Spirit to hear what you are saying to us

  70. individually and together as a church,

  71. that we may understand better who Jesus is,

  72. what he has come to do,

  73. and what it means to follow him,

  74. what it means to be a part of his mission.

  75. So please break into our lives and change our lives,

  76. disrupt us,

  77. do what you have to do

  78. so that we are on board with you

  79. and know what it is to follow you your way.

  80. We ask this in Jesus' name.

  81. Amen.

  82. So do you believe in Satan?

  83. Well, if you don't,

  84. I suggest that that proves that he does exist

  85. and that he is alive and well.

  86. If you don't believe in him,

  87. I think that's proof that he does exist.

  88. Let me tell you why.

  89. C.S. Lewis wrote a book called The Screwtape Letters.

  90. Some of you may have read it.

  91. It's a collection of letters

  92. from a senior devil called Screwtape

  93. to an apprentice devil called Wormwood.

  94. And Screwtape, the senior devil,

  95. his aim is to help Wormwood,

  96. this kind of new, inexperienced understudy,

  97. to guide a man who they call the patient,

  98. their job is to guide the patient,

  99. to our father below, Satan,

  100. and away from our enemy, who's God.

  101. And at one point, Wormwood, the younger devil,

  102. he asked the senior devil, Screwtape,

  103. about their existence,

  104. about whether people believe they exist.

  105. And here's Screwtape's advice.

  106. He writes,

  107. My dear Wormwood,

  108. you ask me whether it is essential

  109. to keep the patient in ignorance

  110. of your own existence.

  111. Our policy for the moment

  112. is to conceal ourselves.

  113. I do not think you will have much difficulty

  114. in keeping the patient in the dark.

  115. The fact that devils are predominantly comic figures

  116. in the modern imagination will help you.

  117. If any faint suspicion of your existence

  118. begins to arise in his mind,

  119. suggest to him a picture of something in red tights,

  120. and persuade him that since he cannot believe in that,

  121. he therefore cannot believe in you.

  122. You see, we shouldn't be surprised

  123. if people don't believe in Satan,

  124. because that's part of his tactics.

  125. He doesn't want us to believe in him.

  126. In fact, the title the Bible gives him

  127. is deceiver and father of lies.

  128. He's a fraud.

  129. He's described as the ancient serpent

  130. called the devil or Satan

  131. who leads the whole world astray.

  132. In 1 John 5.19,

  133. it tells us there that the whole world

  134. is under the control of the evil one.

  135. So this is really serious.

  136. Because his purpose is,

  137. in the words of Screwtape to Wormwood,

  138. guide us to the Father below,

  139. to Satan, to hell itself.

  140. So it's very serious.

  141. And without a doubt,

  142. Satan does exist,

  143. and his influence is great.

  144. Now in Mark's Gospel,

  145. Jesus is coming up against Satan

  146. time and time again.

  147. Wherever Jesus goes,

  148. he seems to be specifically

  149. driving out demons

  150. and healing those who are possessed

  151. by evil spirits.

  152. His ministry, so far,

  153. can be summed up in chapter 1,

  154. verse 39.

  155. Where it says there,

  156. he travelled throughout Galilee,

  157. preaching in their synagogues

  158. and driving out demons.

  159. That seems to be his priority.

  160. And Mark, the author,

  161. is highlighting these events

  162. to show us not only that Satan is real,

  163. but to show us that Jesus has come

  164. to destroy the work of Satan.

  165. Jesus has come to rescue us

  166. from the snare and the grasp of Satan

  167. and to bring us into the freedom

  168. of his kingdom.

  169. Let's see how this happens.

  170. Look at verse 7.

  171. Jesus is gaining popularity

  172. in his ministry.

  173. He's attracting a lot of people

  174. and the crowds begin to follow.

  175. Verse 7.

  176. Jesus withdrew with his disciples

  177. to the lake

  178. and a large crowd,

  179. which was in the west,

  180. began to follow.

  181. When they heard all he was doing,

  182. many people came to him

  183. from Judea,

  184. Jerusalem,

  185. and Edumea,

  186. which was down in the south.

  187. And they came from the regions

  188. across the Jordan,

  189. which was over in the east,

  190. and around Tyre and Sidon,

  191. which was in the north.

  192. Now, this isn't just

  193. geographical information.

  194. This is a description for us

  195. of the worldwide mission of Jesus,

  196. that Jesus came into this world,

  197. and he came for people

  198. in this world,

  199. north, south, east, and west,

  200. regardless of their race or religion.

  201. And his mission for coming

  202. into this world,

  203. as we'll see,

  204. it'll unfold before us,

  205. is to rescue people,

  206. whoever they are

  207. and wherever they come from,

  208. from the grasp of Satan.

  209. Verse 9.

  210. Because of the crowd,

  211. he told his disciples

  212. to have a small boat ready for him

  213. to keep the people

  214. from crowding him.

  215. For he had healed many

  216. so that those with diseases

  217. were pushing forward

  218. to touch him.

  219. Now, the scene here,

  220. and I want us to try

  221. and picture this in our minds,

  222. is one of absolute chaos.

  223. I don't want you to think

  224. of your kind of little

  225. cuddly picture of Jesus

  226. and people lining up

  227. in an orderly queue,

  228. sitting beside the lake

  229. in a nice, sunny, shiny day.

  230. People here are crowding in

  231. and they're pushing

  232. and they're shoving.

  233. There's no lines here.

  234. It's dangerous.

  235. People are being crushed

  236. in their attempt

  237. to touch Jesus.

  238. All these people

  239. who are looking for healing,

  240. coming from all over the place,

  241. crowding in on Jesus.

  242. He's being mobbed

  243. at every side.

  244. And because he's got

  245. no limos to climb into,

  246. he has to make do

  247. with a boat.

  248. His disciples

  249. are on crowd control.

  250. And so Jesus gets into

  251. a boat for safety

  252. and so that he can speak

  253. to the crowds.

  254. And amidst all this disorder

  255. that's going on,

  256. look at verse 11.

  257. In the middle of it all,

  258. whenever the evil spirit

  259. saw him,

  260. they fell down before him

  261. and cried out,

  262. you are the son of God.

  263. So can we picture

  264. what's going on here?

  265. We have this aggressive

  266. mobbing crowd.

  267. There's chaos

  268. and there's disorder.

  269. And in the middle of it all,

  270. we have these demon-possessed people

  271. and the evil spirits

  272. present amongst the people.

  273. And I think Mark here

  274. is stepping back

  275. and painting a picture for us

  276. to show just how broken

  277. the world we live in is.

  278. And the huge needs

  279. that there are of people.

  280. And behind it all

  281. stand Satan

  282. and his work.

  283. But in all of this

  284. chaos and disorder,

  285. look at the calming authority

  286. of Jesus.

  287. Read verse 11 again.

  288. Whenever the evil spirit

  289. saw him,

  290. they fell down before him

  291. and they cried out,

  292. you are the son of God.

  293. As on other occasions,

  294. the demons are one step

  295. ahead of everybody else.

  296. They've got Jesus' identity right.

  297. He is the son of God.

  298. Jesus holds supernatural power

  299. and authority.

  300. He is God on earth

  301. in human form

  302. confronting Satan himself.

  303. And look at their response

  304. to Jesus.

  305. Verse 11,

  306. they fell down before him.

  307. It's an act of submission.

  308. The demons have come up

  309. against not just

  310. a higher authority,

  311. they've come up against

  312. the authority,

  313. God himself.

  314. And look how they respond

  315. to his command,

  316. verse 12.

  317. He gave them strict orders

  318. not to tell

  319. who he was.

  320. As we saw in the other weeks,

  321. he has come

  322. primarily to deal

  323. with spiritual needs.

  324. Physical needs

  325. are of concern.

  326. But he is concerned

  327. to rescue people.

  328. And so he comes

  329. showing them clearly

  330. that yes,

  331. Satan is real,

  332. but Jesus is the

  333. supreme king

  334. who is over

  335. and above all

  336. coming to free

  337. those

  338. who are under

  339. his grasp.

  340. Now with such

  341. a huge crowd

  342. of people

  343. crushing him

  344. from every side,

  345. and in the middle

  346. of all of these crowds

  347. he's trying to deal

  348. with the people

  349. who are demon-possessed,

  350. this is obviously

  351. a work

  352. that Jesus

  353. can't do

  354. on his own.

  355. So Jesus

  356. calls his disciples,

  357. his followers,

  358. to be part

  359. of his mission.

  360. He's become

  361. so overwhelmed

  362. he needs

  363. a band

  364. of people

  365. or as we were

  366. singing earlier

  367. an army

  368. of ordinary

  369. people

  370. to help him.

  371. Look at verse 13.

  372. Jesus went up

  373. on a mountainside

  374. and he called

  375. to him

  376. those he wanted

  377. and they came

  378. to him.

  379. He appointed

  380. twelve

  381. designating them

  382. apostles.

  383. In Genesis,

  384. the very first book

  385. of the Bible,

  386. the very first verse,

  387. it reads,

  388. in the beginning

  389. God

  390. made

  391. the heavens

  392. and the earth.

  393. Jesus.

  394. And that

  395. same idea

  396. and that

  397. same word

  398. is here

  399. where it's

  400. talking about

  401. Jesus making

  402. a new

  403. community

  404. of people.

  405. It literally

  406. reads,

  407. Jesus

  408. made

  409. twelve.

  410. In other words,

  411. these disciples

  412. are a new

  413. creation,

  414. a new

  415. kind of

  416. people,

  417. a new

  418. creation

  419. for a new

  420. beginning

  421. of something

  422. different

  423. that's happening.

  424. And I think

  425. it reminds us

  426. that we can't

  427. make ourselves

  428. disciples.

  429. We can't

  430. make ourselves

  431. a follower

  432. of Jesus.

  433. This is a work

  434. that Jesus

  435. does in the

  436. life of us.

  437. He makes

  438. us disciples.

  439. He intervenes

  440. into our lives.

  441. We would never

  442. choose to be

  443. a disciple

  444. or a follower

  445. of Jesus

  446. unless he

  447. first chose

  448. us

  449. and intervened

  450. into our lives

  451. and made us

  452. a disciple.

  453. So Jesus

  454. is forming

  455. this new

  456. creation,

  457. a new

  458. band of

  459. people,

  460. a new

  461. community.

  462. But this

  463. new community

  464. is for a

  465. purpose.

  466. Look at

  467. the rest

  468. of verse

  469. 14.

  470. That they

  471. might be

  472. with him

  473. and that

  474. he might

  475. send them

  476. out to

  477. preach

  478. and to

  479. have

  480. authority

  481. to drive

  482. out

  483. demons.

  484. They have

  485. been appointed

  486. for a

  487. mission

  488. because

  489. that's

  490. what

  491. apostle

  492. means.

  493. Apostle

  494. means

  495. to

  496. commission

  497. or to

  498. send

  499. somebody

  500. out

  501. with a

  502. specific

  503. purpose.

  504. And we're

  505. told what

  506. that purpose

  507. is in

  508. verse 14.

  509. They are

  510. sent out

  511. to preach

  512. about Jesus,

  513. to talk

  514. about the

  515. good news

  516. of his

  517. kingdom

  518. coming.

  519. And

  520. verse 15

  521. to demonstrate

  522. what Jesus

  523. came to

  524. do,

  525. which was

  526. to defeat

  527. Satan

  528. by driving

  529. out demons.

  530. So very

  531. simply,

  532. their mission

  533. is not

  534. something

  535. different,

  536. it is an

  537. extension

  538. of the

  539. mission of

  540. Jesus.

  541. They are

  542. to continue

  543. to do

  544. what Jesus

  545. has already

  546. started.

  547. Preaching

  548. was all

  549. about calling

  550. people into

  551. repentance,

  552. to submit

  553. to Jesus

  554. as their

  555. king,

  556. and the

  557. sign that

  558. we are

  559. to follow

  560. Jesus,

  561. why should

  562. we follow

  563. him above

  564. everybody

  565. else?

  566. Because of

  567. his power

  568. and authority

  569. over Satan.

  570. So as the

  571. disciples went

  572. around preaching,

  573. and we'll see

  574. they do that

  575. in chapter

  576. 6,

  577. they drove

  578. out demons

  579. as a sign

  580. that Jesus

  581. was God's

  582. king,

  583. and that

  584. people must

  585. repent

  586. and follow

  587. him.

  588. But I

  589. don't want us

  590. to lose

  591. sight of

  592. the people

  593. that Jesus

  594. makes

  595. disciples.

  596. That was a

  597. great song

  598. we sang

  599. earlier,

  600. an army

  601. of ordinary

  602. people,

  603. and Peter

  604. says,

  605. I'm looking

  606. at you,

  607. you are

  608. ordinary,

  609. we're not

  610. an army,

  611. we don't

  612. look like

  613. an army,

  614. but we

  615. are an

  616. army if

  617. we're

  618. followers

  619. of Jesus.

  620. But look

  621. at how

  622. ordinary

  623. we are,

  624. look at

  625. these people.

  626. Verse 16,

  627. these are

  628. the twelve

  629. he appointed,

  630. Simon,

  631. to whom

  632. he gave

  633. the name

  634. Peter,

  635. James,

  636. son of

  637. Zebedee,

  638. and his

  639. brother

  640. John,

  641. to them

  642. he gave

  643. the name

  644. Boandres,

  645. which means

  646. sons of

  647. thunder.

  648. Now we

  649. don't know

  650. everything about

  651. these first

  652. disciples,

  653. but what we

  654. do know is

  655. very instructive

  656. for us.

  657. Later on in

  658. Acts we

  659. read that

  660. they were

  661. thought of

  662. as unschooled

  663. ordinary

  664. people.

  665. In other

  666. words,

  667. they didn't

  668. quite get to

  669. college or

  670. university,

  671. they didn't

  672. do a great

  673. leaving,

  674. a little bit

  675. of sawdust

  676. upstairs.

  677. They weren't

  678. clever,

  679. ordinary

  680. people.

  681. And then

  682. James and

  683. John,

  684. he tells

  685. us what

  686. their nickname

  687. was,

  688. sons of

  689. thunder.

  690. They were

  691. a hot

  692. tempered

  693. pair.

  694. They were

  695. always

  696. arguing

  697. and losing

  698. the rag.

  699. And then

  700. of course

  701. we know

  702. a bit

  703. more about

  704. Peter,

  705. don't we?

  706. He

  707. disowned

  708. Jesus.

  709. Always

  710. said I

  711. stand up

  712. for you.

  713. When the

  714. time came

  715. he was

  716. an absolute

  717. coward,

  718. a yellow

  719. belly.

  720. Reading

  721. on,

  722. verse

  723. 18,

  724. Andrew,

  725. Philip,

  726. Bartholomew,

  727. Matthew.

  728. Well,

  729. sure we've

  730. met Matthew

  731. already,

  732. haven't we?

  733. He was

  734. the one

  735. in chapter

  736. 2,

  737. 13,

  738. the

  739. defrauding

  740. embezzler,

  741. the tax

  742. collector.

  743. The equivalent

  744. today is

  745. somebody like

  746. one of our

  747. corrupt,

  748. crooked bank

  749. managers,

  750. and the

  751. executives who

  752. help themselves

  753. to our

  754. hard-earned

  755. savings.

  756. He's in

  757. there too.

  758. And then

  759. reading on

  760. we have

  761. Thomas,

  762. well,

  763. he was

  764. a doubter.

  765. James,

  766. son of

  767. Alpheus,

  768. Thaddeus,

  769. Simon the

  770. Zealot.

  771. He was

  772. a Che Guevara

  773. of his

  774. day,

  775. a revolutionary.

  776. He terrorised

  777. Rome,

  778. the occupying

  779. forces,

  780. not unlike

  781. one of our

  782. presidential

  783. candidates.

  784. These are

  785. not the

  786. kind of

  787. people that

  788. you would

  789. appoint as

  790. an elder for

  791. your church,

  792. are they?

  793. they're not

  794. the kind

  795. of people

  796. who you

  797. would say,

  798. let's get

  799. them on

  800. the mission.

  801. They're going

  802. to be good.

  803. I mean,

  804. James and

  805. John,

  806. they're going

  807. to unify

  808. everybody,

  809. aren't

  810. they?

  811. And Peter,

  812. we can

  813. always depend

  814. on him.

  815. He'll be

  816. running a

  817. mile at

  818. the first

  819. side of

  820. trouble.

  821. Look at

  822. how ordinary,

  823. look at how

  824. much they

  825. fail,

  826. look at the

  827. kind of

  828. people that

  829. Jesus has

  830. said,

  831. I've made

  832. you disciples

  833. to be a

  834. part of

  835. my mission.

  836. But that

  837. is the

  838. amazing grace

  839. of God,

  840. taking ordinary

  841. people like

  842. you and

  843. me,

  844. with all

  845. our faults

  846. and all

  847. our failures

  848. and all

  849. our mess

  850. ups,

  851. and he

  852. makes us

  853. disciples.

  854. The church,

  855. the body

  856. of Christ,

  857. is God's

  858. new creation,

  859. a new

  860. community of

  861. people,

  862. appointed

  863. for mission.

  864. And that's

  865. what we're

  866. called to

  867. do.

  868. And the

  869. crowds of

  870. people that

  871. were coming

  872. to Jesus,

  873. he can't

  874. do it.

  875. And we're

  876. in a

  877. situation

  878. today,

  879. in the

  880. world,

  881. the church

  882. in the

  883. world,

  884. and it's

  885. under the

  886. control of

  887. the devil.

  888. And he

  889. has blinded

  890. people's

  891. eyes so

  892. that they

  893. can't see

  894. Jesus.

  895. They don't

  896. want to

  897. follow Jesus,

  898. they don't

  899. see the

  900. need to

  901. it,

  902. because they're

  903. all blinded.

  904. they think

  905. he doesn't

  906. exist.

  907. And many

  908. people within

  909. our community

  910. and in our

  911. world are

  912. under the

  913. snare and

  914. the grasp

  915. of Satan,

  916. and he

  917. sent us

  918. on a

  919. mission to

  920. release people

  921. and to

  922. free them.

  923. People

  924. like you

  925. and me,

  926. with all

  927. of our

  928. mess.

  929. people

  930. who

  931. are

  932. going to

  933. have

  934. an

  935. impact

  936. on the

  937. mission

  938. with

  939. Jesus.

  940. Well,

  941. we can

  942. have

  943. great

  944. confidence

  945. in the

  946. mission

  947. because of

  948. what

  949. Jesus

  950. has

  951. accomplished.

  952. Look at

  953. verse 20.

  954. Then

  955. Jesus

  956. entered a

  957. house,

  958. and again

  959. a crowd

  960. gathered,

  961. so that

  962. he and

  963. his

  964. disciples

  965. were not

  966. even able

  967. to

  968. eat.

  969. When

  970. his

  971. family

  972. heard about

  973. this,

  974. they went

  975. to take

  976. charge of

  977. him,

  978. for they

  979. said,

  980. he's out

  981. of his

  982. mind,

  983. he's gone

  984. a bit

  985. loopy,

  986. this crowd

  987. business

  988. has gone

  989. to his

  990. head.

  991. The

  992. reaction,

  993. I think,

  994. is not

  995. unlike

  996. what our

  997. reaction

  998. would be.

  999. They're

  1000. wanting to

  1001. take charge

  1002. of Jesus.

  1003. In other

  1004. words,

  1005. they want

  1006. to control

  1007. Jesus.

  1008. They want

  1009. Jesus to

  1010. do what

  1011. they want

  1012. him to

  1013. do.

  1014. Not

  1015. unlike the

  1016. crowds who

  1017. want Jesus

  1018. as a

  1019. healer.

  1020. They're

  1021. trying to

  1022. control him

  1023. and to

  1024. squish him

  1025. into a

  1026. box.

  1027. But Jesus

  1028. isn't going

  1029. to be

  1030. distracted

  1031. from his

  1032. mission.

  1033. Jesus

  1034. can't be

  1035. controlled.

  1036. We can't

  1037. control him.

  1038. In fact,

  1039. he's out

  1040. to prove

  1041. that he

  1042. has control

  1043. over Satan

  1044. himself.

  1045. Verse 22,

  1046. and the

  1047. teachers of

  1048. the law,

  1049. the religious

  1050. guys,

  1051. they came

  1052. down from

  1053. Jerusalem

  1054. and said,

  1055. Jesus is

  1056. possessed by

  1057. Beelzebub.

  1058. By the

  1059. prince of

  1060. demons,

  1061. he is

  1062. driving out

  1063. demons.

  1064. Beelzebub,

  1065. that's not

  1066. very common.

  1067. I don't

  1068. think anybody's

  1069. called that,

  1070. but it's

  1071. really a

  1072. reference to

  1073. Satan.

  1074. And the

  1075. religious leaders,

  1076. they've been

  1077. watching Jesus,

  1078. they've

  1079. recognised

  1080. who he is,

  1081. and they

  1082. see that

  1083. Jesus has

  1084. power and

  1085. authority to

  1086. perform miracles.

  1087. They've seen

  1088. him do all

  1089. the healing,

  1090. they've seen

  1091. him do all

  1092. the pushing

  1093. out of the

  1094. demons,

  1095. but they say

  1096. the source,

  1097. the power

  1098. behind that

  1099. is Satan.

  1100. Rather than

  1101. see Jesus as

  1102. God's king

  1103. who's come to

  1104. restore and to

  1105. renew the

  1106. broken world,

  1107. they see that

  1108. Jesus is a

  1109. servant of

  1110. Satan.

  1111. Verse 23,

  1112. so Jesus

  1113. called them

  1114. and he spoke

  1115. to them in

  1116. parables.

  1117. How can

  1118. Satan drive

  1119. out Satan?

  1120. Don't be so

  1121. silly.

  1122. If a kingdom

  1123. is divided

  1124. against itself,

  1125. that kingdom

  1126. cannot stand.

  1127. Jesus'

  1128. point is

  1129. simple and

  1130. clear.

  1131. If Jesus'

  1132. work is all

  1133. about driving

  1134. out Satan,

  1135. Satan's

  1136. demons,

  1137. then how

  1138. can you

  1139. say that

  1140. Jesus is

  1141. on the

  1142. side of

  1143. Satan?

  1144. The

  1145. religious

  1146. leader's

  1147. accusation

  1148. is

  1149. nonsensical.

  1150. It's

  1151. silly.

  1152. Look at

  1153. verse 25,

  1154. if a house

  1155. is divided

  1156. against itself,

  1157. that house

  1158. cannot stand.

  1159. And if

  1160. Satan opposes

  1161. himself and

  1162. is divided,

  1163. he cannot

  1164. stand,

  1165. his end

  1166. has come.

  1167. And to

  1168. state his

  1169. mission

  1170. clearly,

  1171. Jesus

  1172. explains what

  1173. he has

  1174. come to

  1175. do.

  1176. Verse 27,

  1177. in fact,

  1178. no one

  1179. can enter

  1180. a strong

  1181. man's

  1182. house and

  1183. carry off

  1184. his possessions

  1185. unless he

  1186. first ties up

  1187. the strong

  1188. man,

  1189. then he

  1190. can rob

  1191. his house.

  1192. Now the

  1193. image here

  1194. is the

  1195. strong man

  1196. is Satan.

  1197. He's got a

  1198. house with

  1199. captives,

  1200. but if you

  1201. want to

  1202. release those

  1203. captives,

  1204. you've got

  1205. to tie

  1206. up the

  1207. strong man

  1208. and release

  1209. them.

  1210. Or to

  1211. put it in

  1212. another way,

  1213. we could

  1214. picture it

  1215. like this,

  1216. a soldier

  1217. going in

  1218. behind enemy

  1219. lines to

  1220. free the

  1221. captive.

  1222. He goes

  1223. in,

  1224. he first

  1225. overpowers

  1226. and he

  1227. conquers the

  1228. enemy,

  1229. ties him

  1230. up and

  1231. then carries

  1232. off the

  1233. captives.

  1234. and Jesus

  1235. is saying,

  1236. I am

  1237. that soldier.

  1238. This is a

  1239. battle.

  1240. This is a

  1241. war.

  1242. I am the

  1243. one who

  1244. has come

  1245. from heaven.

  1246. I've come

  1247. into Satan's

  1248. territory.

  1249. I've invaded

  1250. into this

  1251. world.

  1252. I have come

  1253. to defeat

  1254. the strong

  1255. man,

  1256. to tie him

  1257. up and to

  1258. release his

  1259. prisoners.

  1260. And Jesus

  1261. has already

  1262. proven this

  1263. as he drives

  1264. out demons

  1265. and he

  1266. commands them

  1267. to be quiet.

  1268. But his

  1269. final and

  1270. ultimate display

  1271. of power

  1272. will come

  1273. at the

  1274. cross.

  1275. That's where

  1276. the true

  1277. battle is

  1278. going to

  1279. take place.

  1280. Of course

  1281. the cross

  1282. was seen

  1283. as a

  1284. failure.

  1285. Jesus

  1286. died on

  1287. the cross

  1288. at the

  1289. hands of

  1290. people.

  1291. It looked

  1292. like his

  1293. end was

  1294. over.

  1295. But the

  1296. death of

  1297. Jesus was

  1298. God's

  1299. victory.

  1300. It was

  1301. the means

  1302. by which

  1303. we can

  1304. be forgiven

  1305. and the

  1306. way in

  1307. which people

  1308. are

  1309. set free.

  1310. Let me

  1311. give you a

  1312. couple of

  1313. references.

  1314. You can

  1315. just listen

  1316. or you

  1317. can follow

  1318. them.

  1319. Colossians

    Colossians 2:15

  1320. 2 verse

  1321. 15 says

  1322. this,

  1323. talking about

  1324. Jesus'

  1325. cross and

  1326. his power

  1327. over evil.

  1328. It says,

  1329. having disarmed

  1330. the powers

  1331. and authority,

  1332. Satan himself,

  1333. he made a

  1334. public spectacle

  1335. of them,

  1336. triumphing

  1337. over them

  1338. by the

  1339. cross.

  1340. and then

  1341. in Hebrews

    Hebrews 2:14

  1342. chapter 2

  1343. verse 14.

  1344. Since the

  1345. children,

  1346. that's us,

  1347. have flesh

  1348. and blood

  1349. just as

  1350. we're

  1351. human,

  1352. Jesus too

  1353. shared in

  1354. our humanity.

  1355. He came as

  1356. a man into

  1357. this world

  1358. so that

  1359. by his

  1360. death

  1361. he might

  1362. destroy

  1363. him who

  1364. holds the

  1365. power of

  1366. death,

  1367. that is

  1368. the devil

  1369. and free

  1370. those who

  1371. all their

  1372. lives were

  1373. held in

  1374. slavery

  1375. by their

  1376. fear of

  1377. death.

  1378. Isn't that

  1379. amazing what

  1380. Jesus has

  1381. come to do?

  1382. He's been

  1383. fighting a

  1384. battle or

  1385. rather that

  1386. battle has

  1387. been fought

  1388. for us

  1389. already on

  1390. the cross.

  1391. on the

  1392. cross as

  1393. Jesus died

  1394. it looked

  1395. like Satan

  1396. won the

  1397. war.

  1398. But the

  1399. reality is

  1400. Jesus won

  1401. the battle.

  1402. God

  1403. Now if we

  1404. have been

  1405. appointed for

  1406. a mission

  1407. the way we

  1408. release people

  1409. and set them

  1410. free from the

  1411. grasp and

  1412. snare of

  1413. Satan is

  1414. to tell

  1415. people the

  1416. good news

  1417. about what

  1418. Jesus has

  1419. done on

  1420. the cross.

  1421. Jesus has

  1422. already bound

  1423. Satan.

  1424. He's already

  1425. been tied up.

  1426. He can't

  1427. hold people.

  1428. His power

  1429. has been

  1430. restrained.

  1431. And as we

  1432. simply tell

  1433. people the

  1434. good news

  1435. about Jesus

  1436. he sets

  1437. them free

  1438. from the

  1439. kingdom of

  1440. darkness

  1441. to bring

  1442. them into

  1443. a kingdom

  1444. of light

  1445. of hope

  1446. of forgiveness

  1447. of freedom

  1448. of the

  1449. assurance

  1450. of eternity

  1451. to come.

  1452. But Jesus

  1453. isn't finished.

  1454. He sends

  1455. a very

  1456. clear warning

  1457. for anybody

  1458. who ignores

  1459. the work

  1460. of Jesus

  1461. and says

  1462. don't believe

  1463. you.

  1464. Can't be

  1465. true.

  1466. Look at

  1467. verse 28.

  1468. These are

  1469. difficult

  1470. verses and

  1471. we've got

  1472. to deal

  1473. with them.

  1474. Jesus

  1475. says I

  1476. tell you

  1477. the truth

  1478. all the

  1479. sins and

  1480. blasphemies

  1481. that slanders

  1482. of men

  1483. will be

  1484. forgiven them.

  1485. That's good

  1486. news isn't

  1487. it?

  1488. Anything we

  1489. say and

  1490. do will

  1491. be forgiven

  1492. but

  1493. whoever

  1494. slanders

  1495. against the

  1496. Holy Spirit

  1497. will

  1498. never be

  1499. forgiven.

  1500. He is

  1501. guilty of

  1502. an eternal

  1503. sin

  1504. of hell

  1505. itself.

  1506. Now before

  1507. we unpack

  1508. this let

  1509. me just

  1510. address our

  1511. immediate

  1512. concern

  1513. because like

  1514. you I can

  1515. be guaranteed

  1516. you probably

  1517. thought as I

  1518. thought as I

  1519. read this

  1520. what if I

  1521. have blasphemed

  1522. what if I

  1523. slandered against

  1524. the Holy Spirit

  1525. I'm never

  1526. going to be

  1527. forgiven.

  1528. What if I've

  1529. done that?

  1530. What if I

  1531. don't know

  1532. if I've

  1533. done it?

  1534. Well let

  1535. me put you

  1536. at ease.

  1537. The fact

  1538. that you

  1539. have worry

  1540. or concern

  1541. about it

  1542. is a sure

  1543. sign that

  1544. you have

  1545. a repentant

  1546. heart.

  1547. So those

  1548. who don't

  1549. worry or

  1550. those who

  1551. aren't

  1552. questioning

  1553. this I

  1554. think they

  1555. have much

  1556. more to be

  1557. concerned about

  1558. but if you

  1559. are concerned

  1560. about it

  1561. it is a

  1562. sign of

  1563. a repentant

  1564. heart.

  1565. So let me

  1566. explain.

  1567. Remember back

  1568. in chapter

  1569. one Jesus'

  1570. baptism.

  1571. We're told

  1572. that Jesus

  1573. was sent

  1574. by the

  1575. Father and

  1576. he was

  1577. empowered by

  1578. the Holy

  1579. Spirit.

  1580. So the

  1581. work of

  1582. Jesus as

  1583. Jesus goes

  1584. about doing

  1585. his work

  1586. it is actually

  1587. the work of

  1588. the Holy

  1589. Spirit.

  1590. the

  1591. teachers of

  1592. the law

  1593. that we

  1594. met in

  1595. verse 22

  1596. are claiming

  1597. that Jesus'

  1598. work isn't

  1599. the work of

  1600. the Holy

  1601. Spirit

  1602. it's the

  1603. work of

  1604. the prince

  1605. of demons.

  1606. As Jesus

  1607. himself says

  1608. in verse 30

  1609. they were

  1610. saying all

  1611. this because

  1612. they were

  1613. saying he

  1614. has an

  1615. evil spirit.

  1616. But to

  1617. see the

  1618. work of

  1619. Satan when

  1620. it is

  1621. actually the

  1622. work of

  1623. the Holy

  1624. Spirit is

  1625. to slander

  1626. the Holy

  1627. Spirit.

  1628. In other

  1629. words if we

  1630. can't

  1631. distinguish

  1632. between

  1633. Jesus and

  1634. Satan

  1635. if we

  1636. can't see

  1637. the difference

  1638. between evil

  1639. and good

  1640. if we

  1641. can't

  1642. differentiate

  1643. between an

  1644. evil spirit

  1645. and the

  1646. Holy Spirit

  1647. if we

  1648. just think

  1649. it's all

  1650. the same

  1651. we're

  1652. beyond

  1653. repentance

  1654. repentance.

  1655. We're

  1656. beyond

  1657. repentance.

  1658. If you

  1659. refuse to

  1660. see Jesus

  1661. as the

  1662. supreme

  1663. king

  1664. over

  1665. Satan

  1666. if you

  1667. reject

  1668. that

  1669. it is

  1670. to be

  1671. guilty

  1672. of a

  1673. sin

  1674. with

  1675. eternal

  1676. consequences.

  1677. Hell

  1678. is your

  1679. only

  1680. destiny.

  1681. If you

  1682. turn your

  1683. back on

  1684. Jesus

  1685. and say

  1686. he is

  1687. not

  1688. supreme

  1689. he is

  1690. not

  1691. king

  1692. and to

  1693. turn your

  1694. back on

  1695. him

  1696. completely

  1697. is a

  1698. very

  1699. serious

  1700. matter.

  1701. And let's

  1702. note

  1703. who are

  1704. the people

  1705. who are

  1706. most likely

  1707. to fall

  1708. into this

  1709. sin.

  1710. Surprisingly

  1711. verse 22

  1712. it's the

  1713. religious

  1714. people.

  1715. The people

  1716. who think

  1717. they're better

  1718. than everybody

  1719. else,

  1720. better than

  1721. the sinners.

  1722. They see

  1723. no need

  1724. of Jesus.

  1725. I'm

  1726. alright

  1727. Jack.

  1728. Those

  1729. kind of

  1730. people.

  1731. They're

  1732. the ones

  1733. most likely

  1734. to fall

  1735. into this

  1736. sin.

  1737. Ones

  1738. who are

  1739. full of

  1740. pride,

  1741. self-righteous.

  1742. people

  1743. who are

  1744. on the

  1745. mission.

  1746. We've

  1747. got to

  1748. take these

  1749. things

  1750. seriously.

  1751. But we're

  1752. on a

  1753. mission.

  1754. Or rather

  1755. are we

  1756. on the

  1757. mission?

  1758. Because we

  1759. are either

  1760. on the

  1761. mission with

  1762. Jesus

  1763. or we

  1764. are on a

  1765. mission

  1766. against

  1767. Jesus.

  1768. We've

  1769. all got to

  1770. make our

  1771. decision

  1772. about that.

  1773. Am I

  1774. on the

  1775. mission with

  1776. Jesus or

  1777. am I on a

  1778. mission against

  1779. Jesus?

  1780. There's no

  1781. sitting on the

  1782. fence.

  1783. We're either in

  1784. one camp or

  1785. the other.

  1786. How do I

  1787. know if I

  1788. am on the

  1789. mission with

  1790. Jesus?

  1791. Well, look at

  1792. verse 31.

  1793. We'll just

  1794. read these

  1795. verses

  1796. quickly.

  1797. Then Jesus'

  1798. mother and

  1799. brothers arrived.

  1800. Originally,

  1801. they had come

  1802. to get

  1803. Jesus.

  1804. and they're

  1805. standing outside

  1806. and they

  1807. sent someone

  1808. in to call

  1809. Jesus.

  1810. A crowd was

  1811. sitting around

  1812. him and they

  1813. told him,

  1814. your mother and

  1815. your brothers are

  1816. outside looking

  1817. for you.

  1818. Who are my

  1819. mother and

  1820. brothers?

  1821. Who's my

  1822. real family?

  1823. Jesus asked.

  1824. Then he looked

  1825. at those who

  1826. were seated in

  1827. the circle around

  1828. him and he

  1829. said, here

  1830. are my

  1831. mother and

  1832. my brothers.

  1833. Here is my

  1834. true family.

  1835. Whoever does

  1836. God's will

  1837. is my

  1838. brother and

  1839. sister and

  1840. mother.

  1841. Those who

  1842. are on the

  1843. mission with

  1844. Jesus, those

  1845. who are in

  1846. his true

  1847. family, are

  1848. those who do

  1849. his will.

  1850. What is his

  1851. will?

  1852. We'll go back

  1853. to chapter 3

  1854. verse 14.

  1855. That they

  1856. might be with

  1857. him.

  1858. that they

  1859. might be with

  1860. Jesus.

  1861. People who

  1862. surround themselves

  1863. with Jesus, who

  1864. are there to

  1865. listen to him, to

  1866. learn from him, that

  1867. he might send them

  1868. out to preach.

  1869. Who are concerned

  1870. that people hear the

  1871. good news and have

  1872. authority to drive

  1873. out demons, to

  1874. tell people what

  1875. Christ has done,

  1876. that through Christ

  1877. people can be

  1878. released and set

  1879. free.

  1880. they're the

  1881. people who are on

  1882. the mission with

  1883. Jesus.

  1884. An army of

  1885. ordinary people

  1886. called to be

  1887. part of what

  1888. Jesus is doing.

  1889. It's an amazing

  1890. privilege and a

  1891. wonderful call.

  1892. Make sure you're

  1893. on the right

  1894. side.

  1895. let's pray.

  1896. Our

  1897. Father God, we

  1898. are amazed at

  1899. who Jesus is

  1900. with such

  1901. power and such

  1902. authority that

  1903. evil itself

  1904. falls down

  1905. before you.

  1906. We thank you

  1907. that we stand

  1908. today living

  1909. in the victory

  1910. of Jesus,

  1911. that he has

  1912. overpowered

  1913. Satan, hell

  1914. itself, that

  1915. when we believe

  1916. and trust the

  1917. good news, we

  1918. can be set free

  1919. and welcomed

  1920. into an eternal

  1921. kingdom.

  1922. And Father, help

  1923. us to go this

  1924. week recognizing

  1925. that we are

  1926. failures, we

  1927. are messy

  1928. people, ordinary

  1929. people, made

  1930. your disciples,

  1931. but a new

  1932. creation, a new

  1933. community, on a

  1934. mission with

  1935. Jesus, bringing

  1936. the good news

  1937. and pointing

  1938. others towards

  1939. Jesus the

  1940. Savior.

  1941. Help us to get

  1942. these things

  1943. right.

  1944. help us to

  1945. live for you.

  1946. And if we

  1947. have not yet

  1948. made that

  1949. decision,

  1950. help us,

  1951. make us

  1952. your disciple.

  1953. Ask him

  1954. that he will

  1955. make him

  1956. yours.

  1957. Amen.

  1958. Amen.

  1959. We're going

  1960. to sing.

  1961. We're going

  1962. to sing.
