  1. Christianity Explored study which will be happening in the new year which is going to be looking at Mark's Gospel after.

  2. Mark 4 verse 1

    Mark 4:1

  3. Again Jesus began to teach by the lake.

  4. The crowd that gathered around him was so large that he got into a boat and sat in it out on the lake.

  5. While all the people were along the shore at the water's edge.

  6. He taught them many things by parables and in his teaching said,

  7. Listen, a farmer went out to sow his seed.

  8. As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path and the birds came and ate it up.

  9. Some fell on rocky places where it did not have much soil.

  10. It sprang up quickly because the soil was shallow.

  11. But when the sun came up, the plants were scorched and they withered because they had no root.

  12. Other seeds fell among the thorns which grew up and choked the plants so that they did not bear grain.

  13. Still other seeds fell on good soil.

  14. It came up, grew and produced a crop multiplying 30, 60 or even 100 times.

  15. Then Jesus said,

  16. He who has ears to hear, let him hear.

  17. When he was alone, the twelve and others around him asked him about the parables.

  18. He told them,

  19. The secret of the kingdom of God has been given to you.

  20. But those on the outside, everything is said in parables.

  21. Then Jesus said to them,

  22. Don't you understand this parable?

  23. How then will you understand any parable?

  24. The farmer sows the word.

  25. Some people are like seeds among the path where the word is sown.

  26. As soon as they hear it, Satan comes and takes away the word that was sown in them.

  27. Others, like the seed sown on rocky places, hear the word and at once receive it with joy.

  28. But since they have no root, they only last a short time.

  29. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, they quickly fall away.

  30. Still others, like seeds sown among thorns, hear the word.

  31. But the worries of this life, the seedfulness of wealth and the desires for other things come in and choke the word,

  32. making it unfruitful.

  33. Others, like the seed sown on good soil, hear the word, accepting it,

  34. and produce a crop thirty, sixty or even a hundred times what was sown.

  35. Verse 21.

  36. He said to them,

  37. Do you bring in a lamp to put it under a bowl or a bed?

  38. Instead, don't you put it onto a stand.

  39. For whatever is hidden is meant to be disclosed,

  40. and whatever is concealed is meant to be brought out into the open.

  41. If anyone has ears to hear, let him hear.

  42. Consider carefully what you hear, he continued.

  43. With the measure you use it, it will be measured to you.

  44. And even more.

  45. Whoever has will be given more.

  46. Whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken from him.

  47. He also said,

  48. This is what the kingdom of God is like.

  49. A man scatters seed on the ground.

  50. Night and day, whether he sleeps or gets up,

  51. the seed sprouts and grows, though he does not know how.

  52. All by itself does the soil produce of corn.

  53. First the stalk, then the ear, then the full grain in the ear.

  54. As soon as the grain is ripe, he puts the sickle to it,

  55. because the harvest has come.

  56. Again he said to them,

  57. What shall we say the kingdom of God is like?

  58. Or what parable shall we use to describe it?

  59. It is like a mustard seed,

  60. which is the smallest seed you plant in the ground.

  61. Yet when planted, it grows and becomes the largest of all garden plants,

  62. with such big branches that the birds of the air can perch in its shade.

  63. With many similar parables, Jesus spoke the word to them

  64. as much as they could understand.

  65. He did not say anything to them without using a parable.

  66. But when he was alone with his own disciples, he explained everything.

  67. Thank you.

  68. Well, let's have our Bibles open.

  69. Take notes if you wish.

  70. Please talk afterwards if you have any questions.

  71. Let's pray together as we hear God's word.

  72. Father, we come to your word.

  73. For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any double-edged sword.

  74. It penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow,

  75. judging the thoughts and attitudes of our heart.

  76. Father, we come to your word.

  77. Father, we come to your word.

  78. And we ask that it would speak into our lives.

  79. Speak to the very core of our being.

  80. Showing us who we are.

  81. Telling us what you are like.

  82. And helping us to see the kind of response that we should have.

  83. Amen.

  84. Amen.

  85. Amen.

  86. We pray for your Holy Spirit in all of this.

  87. For it is his power, working through your word,

  88. that brings life to us.

  89. And changes us.

  90. So please do your work amongst us.

  91. We ask this in Jesus' name.

  92. Amen.

  93. Amen.

  94. Listen.

  95. That's how Jesus starts his first parable in verse 3 of chapter 4.

  96. Listen.

  97. And then look how he finishes in verse 9.

  98. Then Jesus said to them,

  99. He who has ears to hear, let him hear.

  100. And if we still haven't got the point,

  101. verse 23,

  102. if anyone has ears to hear,

  103. let them hear.

  104. Consider carefully what you hear.

  105. But why on earth should we be listening to the words of Jesus?

  106. Of all the other voices wanting our attention and claiming that we should listen to them,

  107. why should we hear what Jesus has to say?

  108. What makes his words any more important than, say, the likes of David Norris,

  109. Martin McGinnis, or Dana, or any other of the presidential candidates?

  110. Why should we listen to Jesus?

  111. Why are we even here on a Sunday morning with our Bibles open?

  112. Why aren't we just at home with the telly on or listening to the radio or talking to other people?

  113. Are their words not just as important?

  114. Why is Jesus saying, listen?

  115. Well, let me try and explain.

  116. Mark's Gospel, as we've been looking at together over these weeks,

  117. introduces us to a world of disorder and a world of darkness.

  118. The first, or the opening scenes of Mark's Gospel,

  119. show us that it is a world that is full of sickness and disease.

  120. The people are broken and they're hurt.

  121. The weak and the poor are marginalised and ostracised.

  122. They're pushed out of society.

  123. There's a disorder to life and to the world.

  124. But not only that, there's something sinister as well.

  125. Evil spirits are also active.

  126. People are possessed by demons.

  127. There is a darkness all around.

  128. And it's into this world of disorder and darkness that Jesus comes.

  129. We're introduced to him in this way.

  130. But rather than run away from this world,

  131. Jesus enters into it.

  132. He deliberately goes out of his way to come into contact with this disorder and darkness.

  133. And he begins to meet these people.

  134. And he begins to talk to these people.

  135. He speaks into the darkness.

  136. Look back at chapter 1, verse 25.

  137. One of the first accounts that were given here,

  138. Jesus is that it's a Sunday morning and he's got up to teach

  139. and he has his Bible open and he's speaking away.

  140. And this evil spirit comes from nowhere and disrupts the whole proceedings.

  141. And look what Jesus says in verse 25 of chapter 1.

  142. Be quiet, said Jesus sternly.

  143. Come out of him.

  144. The evil spirit shook the man violently and came out of him with a shriek.

  145. With a simple word, he speaks into the darkness.

  146. It obeys him and the darkness is dispelled.

  147. Later we see that Jesus also speaks into the disorder.

  148. He meets a man with leprosy.

  149. A man with leprosy would have been pushed out to the outside, ostracized.

  150. And he comes to Jesus and he says,

  151. verse 41, Jesus says,

  152. Filled with compassion, Jesus reached out his hand and he touched the man.

  153. I am willing, he said, be clean.

  154. Immediately, the leprosy left him and he was cured.

  155. And as we read on, he gets back into society.

  156. With a simple word, Jesus speaks into the disorder

  157. and it obeys and order is returned to this man's life.

  158. Jesus is being introduced to us in these early chapters

  159. as God's King who has supreme power and ultimate authority.

  160. And the way that power and authority is being expressed

  161. is through his simple words as he begins to talk to people.

  162. Just like we're talking now.

  163. Words like that spoken into people's lives

  164. and everything has changed.

  165. So when we get back to Mark 4,

  166. when Jesus says,

  167. Listen, if you have ears to hear,

  168. now is a good time to start using them.

  169. This is, chapter 4 is one of the first times

    Isaiah 4 chapter mention

  170. we get an extended look at what Jesus has to say,

  171. one of his first big teaching sessions.

  172. And I don't think it's a mistake

  173. that his first big teaching session

  174. is to tell us about the importance of his word,

  175. the centrality of his word.

  176. Verse 3 says,

  177. Listen, chapter 4, verse 3.

  178. Listen, a farmer went out to sow his seed.

  179. Later we're told what that means in verse 14.

  180. Jesus says it's the farmer who sows the word.

  181. The seed is the word.

  182. Well, what's the word?

  183. Well, the word is the message

  184. that Jesus preached and taught.

  185. It's the gospel.

  186. It's the good news.

  187. And it summarized for us back in chapter 1, verse 15.

  188. The time has come, Jesus said.

  189. The kingdom of God is near.

  190. The time for that restoration,

  191. for things to be put right,

  192. for lives to be put back in order.

  193. The time is now here.

  194. And the way for that to happen,

  195. he says, is to repent

  196. and to believe the good news.

  197. This is the message.

  198. This is the word that Jesus taught.

  199. And speaking this word becomes central to Jesus' mission.

  200. In chapter 1, verse 38,

  201. we read Jesus replied,

  202. they're all wanting Jesus for something.

  203. And he says,

  204. let us go somewhere else to the nearby villages

  205. so that I can preach there also.

  206. that is why I've come.

  207. His teaching this word is central.

  208. In fact,

  209. the word and teaching the word

  210. becomes central to the disciples' mission.

  211. Chapter 3, verse 14.

  212. We're told there that he appointed the twelve.

  213. He designated them apostles.

  214. That he might be with them

  215. and that he might send them out

  216. to preach this word.

  217. Because this word has power.

  218. It changes lives.

  219. And he says,

  220. I want you to go with the same message

  221. and do that same work.

  222. And so as we read through this story of chapter 4,

  223. we discover why Jesus' word must be kept central.

  224. Why it's so primary.

  225. Why there's such a focus on it.

  226. Look at verse 20 of chapter 4.

  227. Others like seed sown on good soil

  228. hear the word

  229. and accept the word.

  230. He's telling us that

  231. people enter into the kingdom,

  232. people get restored and get renewed

  233. as they hear the word

  234. and accept the word.

  235. But not only that,

  236. look at the rest of verse 20.

  237. It says they produce a crop

  238. 30, 60 or even 100 times what was sown.

  239. It begins to multiply.

  240. The kingdom grows significantly

  241. as this word begins to be planted

  242. and sown in people's lives

  243. in all different places.

  244. So if we take the word out of this,

  245. well, we have an empty kingdom.

  246. Nobody can get into the kingdom without the word.

  247. You take the word out,

  248. we've got an empty kingdom.

  249. And we've got a dead kingdom

  250. because it can't grow.

  251. You remove the gospel,

  252. you remove the good news,

  253. and we're left with nothing.

  254. Now if the word was central

  255. to Jesus' mission,

  256. the God-man coming to the world,

  257. if this is central to him,

  258. then I think it's got to be central

  259. to us and to our church.

  260. And I think people can get confused here.

  261. And I just want to kind of take a little detour,

  262. a little side here,

  263. and just explain some things.

  264. We get confused about the words of Jesus

  265. and the deeds of Jesus.

  266. In fact, some people think that,

  267. well, they achieved the same result.

  268. Some people speak about Jesus

  269. and that gets them into the kingdom.

  270. Other people kind of do good things

  271. and that gets them into the kingdom.

  272. But that's not the way.

  273. Three things here, very simply.

  274. Word and deed are different.

  275. They are distinct.

  276. The deed primarily addresses

  277. our physical needs.

  278. We do these one to another.

  279. While the word addresses

  280. our spiritual helplessness.

  281. It comes from outside to us.

  282. Physical deeds are done one to another.

  283. The word comes from outside to us

  284. in our helplessness.

  285. So they're different.

  286. They're distinct.

  287. But while they're distinct,

  288. they're also inseparable.

  289. Mark has shown us all the way

  290. through the first few chapters

  291. that Jesus didn't separate them.

  292. So neither should we.

  293. He had compassion on people.

  294. He spent time with people.

  295. But he also spoke to the people.

  296. He reached out to touch the people.

  297. But he also taught the people.

  298. He held them together.

  299. So it wasn't saying

  300. you can only do one

  301. and you can't do the other.

  302. No, they were held together.

  303. However, the word must remain central.

  304. Good deeds are never going to get people

  305. into the kingdom.

  306. And good deeds are never going to make

  307. his kingdom grow big.

  308. God's word is what enables

  309. the people to enter

  310. and God's word is what's going to build it.

  311. So it's not a case of either or,

  312. but both and.

  313. We've got to keep them together.

  314. But within that,

  315. the diagram is trying to show

  316. is that the word must remain central.

  317. The gospel,

  318. the good news of Jesus.

  319. It's got to be central.

  320. And that's the whole big point,

  321. if you like,

  322. of this parable.

  323. Being word-centered

  324. recognizes that the word,

  325. the good news about Jesus

  326. is the means by which people enter

  327. and it's the way in which

  328. the kingdom is going to grow.

  329. It's the way this church

  330. is going to grow.

  331. But being word-centered

  332. also means that this is a message

  333. that has to be told.

  334. It has to be proclaimed.

  335. It's a message of good news.

  336. It's going to be good

  337. for people's lives.

  338. It's going to change them

  339. and transform them.

  340. And the world is in desperate need

  341. and it is this message

  342. that Jesus brings into this world

  343. that's going to change things.

  344. So the word must remain central

  345. to our lives

  346. and to our work.

  347. So that's the first thing.

  348. And as we go through this story,

  349. this word is being spoken

  350. to a huge crowd of people

  351. who've gathered around Jesus,

  352. who's sitting on a boat

  353. on the edge of a lake,

  354. speaking to these crowds of people.

  355. And as we read through it,

  356. it seems like there's

  357. four different ways to respond.

  358. I think we all know the story

  359. and it seems like there's

  360. four different ways.

  361. But the reality is

  362. there's only two ways to respond

  363. to the words of Jesus.

  364. Look at verse 15.

  365. Let's read these through.

  366. Some people, he said,

  367. are like seeds sown along the path

  368. where the word is sown.

  369. As soon as they hear it,

  370. Satan comes along

  371. with his temptation

  372. and he takes the word

  373. that was sown in them.

  374. Then there's others

  375. like seeds sown on rocky places.

  376. They hear the word

  377. and they get very excited by it

  378. and they come along for a while

  379. and they're reading it for a while.

  380. But since they don't have any root,

  381. it only lasts a short time.

  382. And when trouble or persecution comes

  383. because of the word,

  384. they quickly fall away.

  385. And then there's others

  386. where the seed is sown

  387. like among thorns

  388. and they hear the word.

  389. And they're grabbed by it.

  390. It's something they haven't heard before.

  391. But then there's the worries of life,

  392. getting up for work

  393. and having to pay the bills

  394. and the deceitfulness of wealth

  395. and wanting a little bit more

  396. than we have

  397. and the desires for other things,

  398. wanting more and more stuff.

  399. And it begins to replace the word

  400. and it begins to choke

  401. and it makes it unfruitful.

  402. So do you see there

  403. that these first three groups,

  404. they all hear the word

  405. but the result is exactly the same.

  406. They all end up rejecting the word.

  407. The word.

  408. Now there may be different reasons.

  409. Maybe on the one hand

  410. it's Satan and his temptation.

  411. Maybe it's troubles in life.

  412. Maybe it's the desires of our heart.

  413. But the end result is the same.

  414. It's rejection.

  415. But the last group in verse 20,

  416. they also hear the word

  417. and they accept the word.

  418. Others like seed sown on good soil

  419. hear the word

  420. and accept it.

  421. Now the big question

  422. through all of this is

  423. if all hear the word,

  424. this big huge crowd

  425. and we're all kind of

  426. in that crowd too now,

  427. if we're all hearing the word,

  428. why do some reject the word

  429. and some accept it?

  430. Why is that?

  431. That's a big question, isn't it?

  432. Why are some of them going with it

  433. and some of them not going with it?

  434. Because they've all heard it.

  435. Well, I think it all depends

  436. on how well we listen.

  437. How we hear the word is critical.

  438. And hearing Jesus well

  439. requires three things from us.

  440. Helpless, dependent, and longing.

  441. The first is helpless.

  442. Those who hear the word

  443. see their own helplessness.

  444. Look at 4 verse 10.

  445. When he was alone,

  446. the twelve and the others around him

  447. asked him about the parables.

  448. Now that's interesting, isn't it?

  449. Because they've all heard it,

  450. but nobody has understood

  451. what Jesus has first said.

  452. He talked about a farmer

  453. sowing the seed.

  454. Hello?

  455. What was that about?

  456. Most of them have gone away

  457. stubbornly trying to figure it out

  458. for themselves.

  459. They've heard them,

  460. but now they've all gone.

  461. A few, however,

  462. have stayed behind

  463. because they don't know

  464. what it means.

  465. And so they've come to Jesus.

  466. And look what Jesus says

  467. to those who have come to him.

  468. Verse 11.

  469. He told them,

  470. the secret of the kingdom of God

  471. has been given to you.

  472. Because you see your own helplessness

  473. and an inability for you

  474. to figure it all out,

  475. you are going to be given understanding.

  476. Understanding of the kingdom,

  477. of who Jesus is

  478. and why he's come

  479. and why we need him,

  480. in some sense,

  481. is secret.

  482. It's a mystery.

  483. We could never really figure it out.

  484. And we're never going to really understand

  485. what it's all about

  486. unless it's revealed to us,

  487. unless somebody gives us insight into it.

  488. Look what it says in verse 11.

  489. The secret of the kingdom of God

  490. has been given to you.

  491. This revelation,

  492. it's a gift from God to us.

  493. It's not something

  494. that we can figure out by ourselves,

  495. by our own intelligence.

  496. So it demands

  497. that we come to Jesus

  498. helpless.

  499. That we don't know.

  500. We need to put up our hands

  501. and say,

  502. I'm sorry,

  503. I don't know what that means

  504. instead of trying to pretend we do.

  505. In fact,

  506. if we don't come helpless

  507. to God's word,

  508. it has the opposite effect.

  509. Look at the rest of verse 11.

  510. But to those on the outside,

  511. those are the ones

  512. who've now drifted away.

  513. They've heard it,

  514. but they don't come back

  515. wanting to know more.

  516. Those on the outside,

  517. everything is said in parables

  518. so that they may be ever seeing,

  519. but never perceiving.

  520. Ever hearing,

  521. but never understanding.

  522. Otherwise,

  523. they might turn

  524. and be forgiven.

  525. Now those are difficult verses,

  526. aren't they?

  527. It seems like

  528. Jesus doesn't want

  529. people to understand.

  530. It's as if he's saying,

  531. I'm going to say something

  532. so that people can't understand it.

  533. It's almost like

  534. he's deliberately hiding

  535. the truth from them.

  536. Well,

  537. in some ways,

  538. he is.

  539. You see,

  540. God's word

  541. has this double effect.

  542. On the one hand,

  543. it opens people's minds,

  544. and then on the other hand,

  545. it closes people's minds.

  546. Everybody can hear,

  547. and to one group of people,

  548. it will open their minds.

  549. To another group,

  550. it will close their minds.

  551. To those who are open,

  552. and who see their need of help,

  553. they are given understanding.

  554. But to those who are stubborn,

  555. and don't see their need of help,

  556. and don't see what's the point

  557. in all of this,

  558. their understanding

  559. is taken away from them.

  560. So people who hear well

  561. will come helpless.

  562. Second,

  563. those who hear the word

  564. are going to be dependent on Jesus.

  565. Look at verse 21.

  566. He said to them,

  567. Do you bring in a lamp

  568. to put it under a bowl or a bed?

  569. Instead,

  570. don't you put it up on a stand,

  571. high up in the room?

  572. Because the purpose

  573. of a lamp or a light

  574. in any situation

  575. is to illuminate it,

  576. to enable you to see

  577. what's going on.

  578. And Jesus is saying,

  579. I am that light.

  580. I have come to help you see.

  581. I've come to reveal

  582. what is hidden.

  583. Verse 22.

  584. For whatever is hidden

  585. is meant to be disclosed.

  586. Whatever is concealed

  587. is meant to be brought out

  588. into the open.

  589. And if anybody has ears to hear,

  590. let them hear.

  591. So can you hear

  592. what I am saying?

  593. Are you listening to me?

  594. Says Jesus.

  595. I not only speak words to you,

  596. but I am the one

  597. who gives you understanding

  598. of those words.

  599. Without me,

  600. you're always going to be

  601. in the dark.

  602. Without me,

  603. you'll never know

  604. the way into the kingdom.

  605. You'll never be able

  606. to figure things out.

  607. Trusting in your own intellect

  608. or reason

  609. is never going to work.

  610. Relying on the church

  611. and their interpretation.

  612. That's not going to work.

  613. You must depend on me

  614. to reveal the truth

  615. of my word to you.

  616. And that's the difference

  617. between these two groups

  618. of people.

  619. The few that come back

  620. to them are helpless.

  621. They're saying,

  622. we don't know.

  623. Tell us.

  624. But they come dependent

  625. because they know

  626. that Jesus is the only one

  627. who's going to give them insight.

  628. And third,

  629. those who hear the word

  630. come longing for more.

  631. Verse 24.

  632. Consider carefully

  633. what you hear,

  634. he continued.

  635. With the measure you use it,

  636. it will be measured to you

  637. and even more.

  638. Now,

  639. our attitude

  640. to Jesus' word

  641. becomes the measure

  642. by which Jesus

  643. will respond to us.

  644. So let's make this

  645. all very real

  646. and very practical

  647. right now.

  648. We're reading

  649. Jesus' word,

  650. we're studying it

  651. and we're thinking about it

  652. and we're all hearing it.

  653. Our attitude

  654. to it right now

  655. will be the measure

  656. by which Jesus responds

  657. to each one of us

  658. right now.

  659. In other words,

  660. if we come longing

  661. for more,

  662. if we come with an attitude

  663. that wants to be filled,

  664. then he is going to fill us.

  665. He's going to respond

  666. with a good measure.

  667. But if we come content

  668. and just think,

  669. ah,

  670. Jesus' word,

  671. heard this story,

  672. been there,

  673. done that,

  674. will receive very little.

  675. Verse 25,

  676. whoever has

  677. will be given more.

  678. Whoever does not have,

  679. even what they have

  680. will be taken from him.

  681. Can you see

  682. what's going on here?

  683. Those who are eager

  684. in their desire

  685. to understand,

  686. they'll be given

  687. more understanding.

  688. If we come with an attitude

  689. that is longing

  690. and wanting for more

  691. of Jesus

  692. and understanding

  693. more of him,

  694. God is going to respond

  695. generously

  696. and he's going to

  697. fill us up

  698. and he's going to enable us

  699. to grasp the things

  700. about his kingdom.

  701. He's going to be generous.

  702. If we come empty

  703. and say,

  704. please fill me,

  705. he'll fill you.

  706. But the opposite

  707. is also true

  708. and this is why

  709. it's so critical

  710. that we get this.

  711. if our attitude

  712. is one of contentment

  713. and one of

  714. not really into it,

  715. then what little

  716. understanding

  717. we may have

  718. is going to be

  719. taken from us.

  720. God's word

  721. has a double effect.

  722. It not only

  723. brings people

  724. to salvation

  725. and opens their minds,

  726. but it closes

  727. people's minds.

  728. So people

  729. who hear

  730. well

  731. come longing

  732. for more.

  733. And this is

  734. how we should listen.

  735. This is how we should

  736. hear

  737. Jesus' words.

  738. Jesus is God's

  739. appointed king

  740. who has come

  741. to speak

  742. into the disorder

  743. and the darkness

  744. of our lives.

  745. He has something

  746. to say to us.

  747. But we're never

  748. going to grasp it.

  749. We're never going

  750. to get it

  751. unless we become

  752. helpless,

  753. dependent

  754. and longing.

  755. The power

  756. of Jesus' word

  757. then.

  758. While hearing

  759. is a good thing

  760. and it's a right

  761. thing,

  762. Jesus wants us

  763. to know

  764. that at the end

  765. of the day

  766. it's his word

  767. that's going

  768. to bring about

  769. the change.

  770. The reason

  771. why we listen

  772. is because

  773. Jesus' word

  774. is active

  775. and powerful.

  776. When it is heard

  777. it begins

  778. to work

  779. in our lives

  780. in amazing ways.

  781. First,

  782. the word

  783. works

  784. supernaturally.

  785. Look at verse 26.

  786. He has two little

  787. stories

  788. that follow this.

  789. The word

  790. works supernaturally

  791. in our lives.

  792. Verse 26.

  793. He also said

  794. this is what

  795. the kingdom

  796. of God

  797. is like.

  798. A man

  799. scatters seed

  800. on the ground.

  801. It's still

  802. the same idea

  803. of the seed

  804. being the word.

  805. Night and day

  806. whether he sleeps

  807. or gets up

  808. the seed

  809. sprouts and grows

  810. though he does

  811. not know how

  812. and all by itself

  813. the soil

  814. produces corn

  815. first the stalk

  816. then the ear

  817. then the full grain

  818. in the ear.

  819. As soon as

  820. the grain

  821. is ripe

  822. he puts

  823. a sickle

  824. to it

  825. because the

  826. harvest

  827. has come.

  828. Hearing Jesus'

  829. word

  830. receiving it

  831. and accepting it

  832. is just like

  833. planting a little

  834. seed in the ground.

  835. By a supernatural

  836. power

  837. outside of ourselves

  838. it begins to

  839. grow and sprout

  840. and brings about

  841. new life.

  842. Just as a farmer

  843. can't make a seed

  844. grow

  845. just as a gardener

  846. can't make a seed

  847. grow

  848. he doesn't even

  849. know how it

  850. happens

  851. so we can't

  852. bring about

  853. this new life

  854. for ourselves.

  855. The word

  856. he's saying

  857. has a supernatural

  858. power

  859. and if we plant

  860. that seed

  861. into our lives

  862. if we plant

  863. the word of God

  864. into our lives

  865. we can be confident

  866. that it's going

  867. to grow

  868. and it's going

  869. to bring about

  870. a change.

  871. We can't do it

  872. but the gospel

  873. is supernatural

  874. and unless we

  875. try and unless

  876. we plant it in

  877. it's not going

  878. to grow and work.

  879. It's supernatural

  880. it's a powerful

  881. thing.

  882. But second

  883. he says

  884. the word works

  885. surprisingly

  886. verse 30

  887. again he said

  888. what shall we say

  889. the kingdom of God

  890. is like

  891. or what parable

  892. shall we use

  893. to describe it?

  894. It is like

  895. a mustard seed

  896. it's the same idea

  897. the seed is the word

  898. which is the smallest

  899. seed you plant

  900. in the ground

  901. yet when planted

  902. it grows

  903. and becomes

  904. the largest

  905. of all garden plants

  906. with such big branches

  907. that the birds

  908. of the air

  909. can perch

  910. in its shade.

  911. And he's reminding

  912. us here

  913. that his word

  914. works

  915. with surprising

  916. results.

  917. Not only are we

  918. encouraged to plant

  919. the gospel seeds

  920. in our own lives

  921. we are to begin

  922. to plant

  923. these seeds

  924. into other

  925. people's lives

  926. just as a tiny

  927. mustard seed

  928. grows

  929. into a huge

  930. big tree

  931. big enough

  932. for birds

  933. to rest

  934. so Jesus'

  935. word

  936. will have

  937. the same

  938. impact

  939. within us

  940. and within

  941. our community.

  942. Excuse me.

  943. so the good news

  944. is so powerful

  945. that when we

  946. begin to plant

  947. it in our lives

  948. it will bring

  949. about a supernatural

  950. work

  951. and when we

  952. begin to plant

  953. it in others

  954. it will cause

  955. that growth

  956. to happen.

  957. God

  958. will have

  959. to plant

  960. and let me

  961. just say a couple

  962. of things

  963. to apply all

  964. of this through

  965. for us.

  966. His word is

  967. central

  968. it's primary

  969. we've got to

  970. listen to it

  971. in a certain

  972. way

  973. and if we

  974. do

  975. it will bring

  976. about a

  977. supernatural

  978. and surprising

  979. work.

  980. So if you're

  981. a parent here

  982. this morning

  983. and you've got

  984. little children

  985. their lives

  986. are being

  987. bombarded

  988. by all

  989. kinds of

  990. words

  991. every day

  992. from television

  993. from school

  994. from friends

  995. words

  996. words

  997. words

  998. are piling

  999. in.

  1000. The greatest

  1001. words

  1002. that you

  1003. can ever

  1004. speak to

  1005. them

  1006. is the

  1007. words of

  1008. Jesus.

  1009. Nobody else

  1010. is going

  1011. to tell

  1012. them.

  1013. That is

  1014. your prime

  1015. responsibility

  1016. as a

  1017. parent.

  1018. I'm a

  1019. parent.

  1020. Johnny

  1021. read the

  1022. Bible with

  1023. your children.

  1024. Talk to

  1025. them about

  1026. it.

  1027. Teach them

  1028. what it is

  1029. to come

  1030. to God's

  1031. word

  1032. helpless

  1033. dependent

  1034. and longing.

  1035. Every one

  1036. of us

  1037. as parents

  1038. take your

  1039. time.

  1040. Read with

  1041. each other

  1042. all of us

  1043. together

  1044. and I know

  1045. this is what

  1046. some of you

  1047. do.

  1048. Some of you

  1049. meet up

  1050. during the

  1051. week

  1052. one to

  1053. one.

  1054. You

  1055. take

  1056. time

  1057. out

  1058. in the

  1059. week

  1060. and you

  1061. begin

  1062. to read

  1063. the

  1064. Bible

  1065. and as

  1066. you

  1067. do

  1068. see the

  1069. confidence

  1070. in his

  1071. word

  1072. because

  1073. it's

  1074. so

  1075. powerful

  1076. it will

  1077. change

  1078. you

  1079. and it

  1080. will bring

  1081. about a

  1082. growth

  1083. in your

  1084. life

  1085. and a

  1086. growth

  1087. within

  1088. the

  1089. church.

  1090. The

  1091. most

  1092. important

  1093. thing

  1094. for us

  1095. to do

  1096. is to

  1097. do

  1098. that.

  1099. And I

  1100. think if

  1101. we begin

  1102. to do

  1103. these

  1104. things

  1105. we will

  1106. be so

  1107. excited

  1108. so enthused

  1109. we will

  1110. begin to

  1111. see the

  1112. change

  1113. in our

  1114. own

  1115. lives

  1116. that the

  1117. words of

  1118. Jesus will

  1119. become so

  1120. natural, so

  1121. beautiful, so

  1122. wonderful that

  1123. we will begin to

  1124. talk those

  1125. words to

  1126. other people as

  1127. well.

  1128. But if we want

  1129. other people to

  1130. hear those

  1131. words we've

  1132. got to start

  1133. hearing them

  1134. for ourselves

  1135. first.

  1136. Jesus' word

  1137. must be a

  1138. priority.

  1139. Keep it

  1140. central.

  1141. Listen to

  1142. it well

  1143. and have

  1144. confidence

  1145. in its

  1146. amazing

  1147. power

  1148. to change

  1149. lives

  1150. and to

  1151. grow big.

  1152. Let's

  1153. pray.

  1154. Amen.

  1155. Amen.

  1156. Amen.

  1157. Amen.

  1158. Amen.

  1159. Amen.

  1160. Amen.

  1161. Amen.

  1162. Amen.

  1163. Amen.

  1164. Amen.

  1165. Amen.

  1166. Amen.

  1167. Amen.

  1168. Amen.

  1169. Our Father, we

  1170. recognize that

  1171. there are many

  1172. things that will

  1173. come in to

  1174. try and

  1175. steal away

  1176. the words.

  1177. Satan is

  1178. there ready

  1179. to take that

  1180. seed and

  1181. the worries

  1182. of life,

  1183. the things that

  1184. are happening

  1185. this week are

  1186. ready to come

  1187. in and bombard

  1188. our minds

  1189. and take away

  1190. what is sown.

  1191. and struggles

  1192. and pressures.

  1193. So we pray

  1194. that by the

  1195. power of your

  1196. Holy Spirit

  1197. allow that

  1198. word,

  1199. allow that

  1200. seed to

  1201. settle in

  1202. our lives.

  1203. May we

  1204. hear it.

  1205. May we

  1206. accept it.

  1207. God, may it

  1208. produce in us

  1209. amazing results

  1210. in our own

  1211. lives.

  1212. May it

  1213. produce amazing

  1214. results in this

  1215. church and in

  1216. this community.

  1217. May God do

  1218. amazing things

  1219. through his

  1220. word, we pray

  1221. in Jesus' name.

  1222. Amen.

  1223. Amen.

  1224. Amen.

  1225. Thank you.
