  1. going to be reading and Kirsty, so if you'd like to come up and maybe just give the reference

  2. and page numbers, that'll be helpful. Thanks very much.

  3. It's page 1010 in the Church Bible, Mark chapter 7 from verse 24.

    Mark 7 chapter mention

  4. Jesus left that place and went to the vicinity of Tyre. He entered a house and did not want anyone

  5. to know it, yet he could not keep his presence secret. In fact, as soon as she heard about him,

  6. a woman whose little daughter was possessed by an evil spirit came and fell at his feet.

  7. The woman was a Greek, born in Syrian Phoenicia. She begged Jesus to drive the demon out of her

  8. daughter. First, let the children eat all they want, he told her, for it is not right to take

  9. the children's bread and toss it to their dogs. Yes, Lord, she replied, but even the dogs under

  10. the table eat the children's crumbs. Then he said to her, for such a reply you may go,

  11. the demon has left your daughter. She went home and found her child lying on the bed and the demon gone.

  12. Then Jesus left the vicinity of Tyre and went through Sidon, down to the Sea of Galilee and

  13. into the region of the Decapolis. There some people brought to him a man who was deaf and could

  14. hardly talk, and they begged him to place his hand on the man. After he took him aside, away from the

  15. crowd, Jesus put his fingers into the man's ears. Then he spat and touched the man's tongue. He looked up

  16. to heaven and with a deep sigh said to him, Ifatahata, which means, be opened. At this, the man's ears were

  17. opened, his tongue was loosened, and he began to speak plainly. Jesus commanded them not to tell anyone,

  18. but the more he did so, the more they kept talking about it. People were overwhelmed with amazement.

  19. He has done everything well, they said. He even makes the deaf hear and the mute speak.

  20. Continuing on in chapter 8. During those days, another large crowd gathered. Since they had

  21. nothing to eat, Jesus called his disciples to him and said, I have compassion for these people.

  22. They have already been with me three days and have had nothing to eat. If I send them home hungry,

  23. they will collapse on the way because some of them have come a long distance. His disciples answered,

  24. But where in this remote place can anyone get enough bread to feed them? How many loaves do you have?

  25. Jesus asked. Seven, they replied. He told the crowd to sit down on the ground. When he had taken the

  26. seven loaves and given thanks, he broke them and gave them to his disciples to set before the people,

  27. and they did so. They had a few small fish as well. He gave thanks for them also and told the disciples

  28. to distribute them. The people ate and were satisfied. Afterwards, the disciples picked up

  29. seven basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over. About 4,000 men were present, and having sent

  30. them away, he got into the boat with his disciples and went to the region of Dalmanutha. The Pharisees

  31. came and began to question Jesus. To test him, they asked him for a sign from heaven. He sighed deeply and said,

  32. Why does this generation ask for a miraculous sign? I tell you the truth, no sign will be given to it.

  33. Then he left them, got back into the boat, and crossed to the other side.

  34. As I'm getting sorted here, there's notes and pens if anybody would like to avail of that.

  35. You can just ask for it.

  36. Thank you.

  37. Thank you.

  38. Thank you.

  39. Thanks very much.

  40. Okay, well, let's pray.

  41. Our Father God, we ask that you would answer the prayer that we sung a moment ago, that you would come.

  42. Holy Spirit, come.

  43. Breathe life into these words so that we hear your voice speaking to us.

  44. So that the words that we hear from your word change us, transform us, and help us to understand who you are, the kingdom that you have come to build.

  45. That we would leave as a people who are on board with your mission, with hearts that are aligned to your priorities.

  46. Please do a work amongst us, we pray in Jesus. Amen.

  47. Well, we reach a turning point in Mark's gospel where Jesus is moving towards a different people and into a different place.

  48. Up to this point in Mark's gospel, Jesus has been primarily located around the Lake Galilee with primarily Jewish people.

  49. And as he was preaching that they should repent and believe the good news.

  50. And also proving through his miracles that he is God's king who has come to renew this disordered world and restore broken lives.

  51. But now, look at verse 24, it tells us Jesus left that place and he went to the vicinity of Tyre.

  52. This is a decisive and a deliberate move by Jesus.

  53. Jesus leaves and goes to a different people.

  54. He goes to the Gentiles and he goes to a different place to Tyre.

  55. Jesus is on a mission to expand and to see his kingdom grow.

  56. So, verse 31.

  57. Then Jesus left the vicinity of Tyre and he went down through Sidon, down to the Sea of Galilee and into the region of the Decapolis.

  58. It seems a straightforward journey that Jesus goes out, he does his work and he comes back again to Lake Galilee.

  59. But the way that Jesus went, and if we had a big map here you'd be able to see it, it would be like us going to Limerick via Dublin.

  60. He makes this massive big detour, this big huge horseshoe all the way out.

  61. And it's telling us that Jesus is decisively and deliberately moving out to new people and he's going to new places because his kingdom is to go to all people.

  62. His mission is that his kingdom would expand and that people would know about him.

  63. So the question that we want to ask in all of this as we look through these three stories is to ask how does his kingdom expand?

  64. How will we see it grow in places like Carigaline?

  65. Well, firstly, it's an open kingdom.

  66. The grace of Jesus is open to all.

  67. Jesus may be going to a different place and to a different people, but the offer of Jesus remains the same.

  68. Look at verse 24.

  69. He entered a house and he did not want anyone to know it because he's always wanting to show who he is.

  70. He doesn't want other people trying to figure it out.

  71. He wants to tell them who he is.

  72. But he couldn't keep his presence secret.

  73. In fact, as soon as she heard about him, a woman whose little daughter was possessed by an evil spirit came and fell at his feet.

  74. Now, this is normal ministry for Jesus, isn't it?

  75. We've come across this before time and time again in Mark's Gospel.

  76. It happened all the time.

  77. But this time it's meant to shock us.

  78. The last person who fell at Jesus' feet was Jairus.

  79. He was a well-respected man within his community, president of his local church, a man with clout and influence, and he took his religion seriously.

  80. But here, look at verse 26.

  81. We have a woman who was a Greek.

  82. That is, she's a Gentile.

  83. She's unclean.

  84. Born in Syrian Phoenicia, they were enemies of Jews.

  85. But more importantly, they were pagans.

  86. She didn't go to church.

  87. She didn't have a Bible.

  88. They weren't into religion.

  89. All her credentials that we have before us basically disqualify her from coming to God.

  90. But this woman is not going to be disqualified.

  91. She is both determined and courageous.

  92. Look at the rest of verse 26.

  93. She begged Jesus to drive the demon out of her daughter.

  94. This is like an illegal immigrant in Ireland, bursting into the offices of Enderkenny, demanding that he give them a job right now.

  95. But they have no rights.

  96. They disqualify at so many levels.

  97. And it's the same with this woman.

  98. She's got no rights.

  99. But she does understand the generosity of God's grace.

  100. Jesus' answer is somewhat confusing and it almost seems quite harsh.

  101. Verse 27.

  102. Jesus said,

  103. Now Jews were considered God's children.

  104. They were the insiders.

  105. God's special people.

  106. And they had rights to God.

  107. Gentiles, on the other hand, were seen as dogs.

  108. Outsiders.

  109. Unclean.

  110. You didn't have anything to do with those people.

  111. They had no rights.

  112. So Jesus is saying,

  113. You can't take what rightfully belongs to the children.

  114. You can't take what belongs to the Jews

  115. and give it to the dogs.

  116. The Gentiles.

  117. The Messiah.

  118. God's King who's come to renew and to restore this broken world and disordered life.

  119. Well, he was sent to the Jews, not to the Gentiles.

  120. So who are you coming to me asking me to do something?

  121. Seems quite harsh, doesn't it?

  122. But she is determined to receive God's grace.

  123. Her answer is spectacular.

  124. Verse 28.

  125. Yes, Lord, she replied.

  126. But even the dogs under the table eat the children's crumbs.

  127. Look, Jesus.

  128. You know what it's like when kids have their dinner.

  129. There's a mess all over the floor.

  130. And the dogs come in and they clear up the leftovers.

  131. They also get to eat, don't they?

  132. Literally, the dogs eat as much as they like.

  133. In other words, she's grasped the fact

  134. that she knows the grace of Jesus

  135. is so deep

  136. that there is an overflow.

  137. His generosity

  138. spills over to people

  139. like her.

  140. Verse 29.

  141. So then he told her,

  142. for such a reply,

  143. you may go.

  144. The demon has left

  145. your daughter.

  146. In other words,

  147. she has received his grace.

  148. And she went home

  149. and found her child

  150. lying on the bed

  151. and the demon gone.

  152. This woman here

  153. shows us

  154. how God's grace

  155. is open to all.

  156. He has

  157. no favourites.

  158. He makes

  159. no distinction

  160. between people.

  161. Whoever you are,

  162. wherever you come from,

  163. whatever you've done,

  164. whatever you've done

  165. this week,

  166. the

  167. reservoir of God's grace

  168. is so deep,

  169. it's so wide,

  170. it's so long

  171. that everybody

  172. is welcome

  173. to come and drink

  174. and be filled

  175. and be satisfied

  176. from his grace.

  177. But why

  178. did Jesus speak

  179. in parables

  180. to this woman?

  181. Why did he not say,

  182. as he had done

  183. so many times before

  184. to other people,

  185. why didn't he just say,

  186. go, your daughter is healed?

  187. And that was the end

  188. of it.

  189. It seems that Jesus

  190. is deliberately

  191. making it difficult

  192. for this woman

  193. to receive grace.

  194. Why is he doing this?

  195. Well, the grace of Jesus

  196. is open to everybody.

  197. However, we must

  198. really want it.

  199. We must be both

  200. courageous

  201. and determined

  202. in our request

  203. and our desire

  204. for God's grace.

  205. Like this woman,

  206. we too have no rights

  207. to God's grace.

  208. We don't deserve

  209. God's grace.

  210. However,

  211. God's grace,

  212. because of his character,

  213. it is so deep

  214. that there is this

  215. overflow.

  216. His generosity

  217. spills over to people

  218. like us

  219. on a daily basis.

  220. And so,

  221. the invitation here

  222. is to come

  223. demanding

  224. that he pour his grace

  225. on us without measure.

  226. We can come to him

  227. insisting

  228. that he fills us

  229. and he satisfies us

  230. with his grace.

  231. Not because of who we are,

  232. but because of who he is,

  233. his generosity,

  234. his kindness.

  235. So,

  236. the kingdom of God

  237. is going to expand,

  238. it's going to grow

  239. when we come

  240. like this woman

  241. and receive

  242. the grace

  243. that Jesus

  244. has to offer.

  245. The second,

  246. the kingdom

  247. will expand

  248. because

  249. it's going to be revealed.

  250. The touch

  251. of Jesus

  252. is needed

  253. by all.

  254. Jesus may be going

  255. to different people

  256. and to different places,

  257. but the work

  258. of Jesus

  259. remains the same.

  260. Look at verse 32.

  261. There some people

  262. brought to him

  263. a man

  264. who was deaf

  265. and could hardly talk,

  266. and they begged Jesus

  267. to place his hand

  268. on the man

  269. just to touch him,

  270. to heal him.

  271. Now,

  272. the place

  273. where this is happening

  274. and the kind

  275. of person

  276. that's described here

  277. is full of significance.

  278. We've got to understand

  279. and to know

  280. our Old Testament

  281. to grasp

  282. what is going on here.

  283. So,

  284. keep your finger there

  285. in Mark

  286. and jump back

  287. to Isaiah

    Isaiah 35 chapter mention

  288. chapter 35.

  289. Isaiah

    Isaiah 35 chapter mention

  290. chapter 35.

  291. 35.

  292. The first 34 chapters,

  293. this is just generally,

  294. but generally,

  295. the first 34 chapters

  296. are all about

  297. God's judgment

  298. on rebellious people

  299. and on the nations.

  300. And included

  301. is,

  302. in chapter 23,

  303. is this lengthy judgment

  304. on Tyre

  305. and Sidon,

  306. the place where Jesus

  307. was doing his work,

  308. his ministry.

  309. And then we get

  310. to Isaiah

    Isaiah 35 chapter mention

  311. chapter 35

  312. and we get

  313. a glimpse

  314. of the work

  315. that God has promised

  316. to do in the future.

  317. And this is what we read,

  318. Isaiah 35,

    Isaiah 35:1

  319. verse 1.

  320. He says,

  321. the desert

  322. and the parched land

  323. will be glad.

  324. The wilderness

  325. will rejoice

  326. and blossom.

  327. Like the crocus,

  328. it will burst

  329. into bloom.

  330. It will rejoice

  331. greatly

  332. and shout

  333. for joy.

  334. This is a

  335. wonderful picture

  336. of God's

  337. promised

  338. restoration

  339. and renewal.

  340. Instead of judgment,

  341. he said,

  342. there's a time coming

  343. when salvation

  344. is going to come

  345. to all people.

  346. And the sign

  347. that that time

  348. has come,

  349. look at verse 5.

  350. How do we know

  351. that salvation

  352. has come?

  353. He tells us,

  354. verse 5,

  355. then the eyes

  356. of the blind

  357. will be opened,

  358. the ears

  359. of the deaf

  360. unstopped,

  361. the lame

  362. will leap

  363. like a deer

  364. and the mute

  365. tongue

  366. shout for joy.

  367. In Mark,

  368. and let's go

  369. back there,

  370. we find Jesus

  371. walking through

  372. the region

  373. of Tyre

  374. and Sidon

  375. and what's he doing

  376. as he's walking

  377. around this area

  378. once it had been

  379. told a place

  380. of judgment?

  381. He's now healing

  382. a deaf

  383. and a mute

  384. man.

  385. The significance

  386. is crystal clear.

  387. Jesus is doing

  388. the work

  389. that God had

  390. promised all

  391. those years ago.

  392. Jesus is God's

  393. king who's

  394. invaded,

  395. who's intervened

  396. into the world

  397. and he's come

  398. to restore

  399. the disordered

  400. world and to

  401. renew broken

  402. lives,

  403. to bring salvation,

  404. to bring grace,

  405. to bring mercy

  406. and he's right

  407. there on their

  408. patch.

  409. No wonder

  410. the people

  411. went celebrating

  412. verse 37.

  413. People were

  414. overwhelmed

  415. with amazement.

  416. He has done

  417. everything well,

  418. they said.

  419. He even makes

  420. the deaf hear

  421. and the mute

  422. speak.

  423. Jesus has

  424. reached into

  425. these people

  426. and he's

  427. touched their

  428. lives and

  429. he's revealed

  430. the kingdom

  431. to them.

  432. They understand

  433. who Jesus

  434. is.

  435. But why

  436. did Jesus

  437. heal in

  438. this way?

  439. I mean,

  440. it's very

  441. strange,

  442. isn't it?

  443. We don't read

  444. about this

  445. all the time.

  446. Coming along,

  447. sticking his

  448. fingers in

  449. somebody's ears

  450. and then

  451. spitting on

  452. his fingers

  453. and touching

  454. somebody's tongue.

  455. It's all

  456. rather gross,

  457. isn't it?

  458. why does

  459. he heal

  460. in this

  461. way?

  462. Well,

  463. we've got to

  464. remember where

  465. the disciples

  466. are at.

  467. Ironically,

  468. the disciples

  469. still don't

  470. get who

  471. Jesus is.

  472. The woman

  473. who we've

  474. met,

  475. she knows

  476. who Jesus

  477. is.

  478. She knows

  479. that he's

  480. overflowing

  481. with grace.

  482. That the

  483. people here

  484. who he's

  485. just healed,

  486. well,

  487. they've

  488. grasped

  489. who he is.

  490. He's God's

  491. promised king.

  492. The disciples,

  493. however,

  494. they've seen

  495. Jesus do

  496. lots of

  497. miracles.

  498. They've heard

  499. him teach

  500. all over

  501. the place,

  502. but they

  503. still don't

  504. get who

  505. he is.

  506. They still

  507. don't understand.

  508. In fact,

  509. at the beginning

  510. of chapter 7,

  511. Jesus said to

  512. them,

  513. why are you

  514. so dull?

  515. Why are you

  516. so thick?

  517. What have I

  518. got to do

  519. for you to

  520. understand?

  521. So it

  522. seems that

  523. this healing

  524. here pictures

  525. what needs

  526. to happen

  527. to us

  528. all.

  529. If people

  530. are to

  531. understand

  532. who Jesus

  533. is,

  534. then the

  535. kingdom has

  536. to be

  537. revealed to

  538. them.

  539. It has

  540. to be

  541. opened up

  542. to them.

  543. They must

  544. experience

  545. the touch

  546. of Jesus

  547. in their

  548. lives.

  549. So let's

  550. look at this

  551. healing in

  552. verse 33.

  553. After he

  554. took him

  555. aside,

  556. away from

  557. the crowd,

  558. this is

  559. something very

  560. personal and

  561. intimate,

  562. Jesus put

  563. his fingers

  564. fingers into

  565. the man's

  566. ears.

  567. Then he

  568. spat,

  569. and the

  570. translation there

  571. is on his

  572. fingers,

  573. and then

  574. touched the

  575. man's tongue.

  576. You see,

  577. he can't hear

  578. Jesus,

  579. he can't

  580. respond to

  581. Jesus and

  582. talk to him,

  583. so Jesus

  584. communicates by

  585. touch.

  586. Verse 34,

  587. he looked up

  588. to heaven

  589. and with a

  590. deep sigh

  591. said to

  592. him,

  593. Ephasa,

  594. which means

  595. be opened.

  596. At this,

  597. the man's

  598. ears were

  599. opened,

  600. his tongue

  601. was opened

  602. or loosened,

  603. and he

  604. began to

  605. speak

  606. plainly.

  607. Now,

  608. reading this,

  609. I couldn't

  610. help but

  611. make comparisons.

  612. Rebecca,

  613. our daughter,

  614. as you know,

  615. is deaf.

  616. She can't

  617. speak very

  618. well.

  619. She's just

  620. like this

  621. man in

  622. this story.

  623. And like

  624. the man's

  625. friends who

  626. bring him

  627. to Jesus,

  628. well,

  629. we've brought

  630. Rebecca to

  631. Jesus,

  632. and we

  633. asked that

  634. he would

  635. heal her,

  636. that he

  637. would touch

  638. her.

  639. but over

  640. time,

  641. we've

  642. learned to

  643. ask for

  644. a different

  645. kind of

  646. healing for

  647. our daughter.

  648. Of course,

  649. it would be

  650. great if

  651. Rebecca could

  652. physically hear,

  653. but God

  654. has chosen

  655. not to do

  656. that,

  657. and that's

  658. okay,

  659. we've worked

  660. through all

  661. of that,

  662. and we're

  663. content.

  664. In fact,

  665. we're probably

  666. glad that he

  667. hasn't,

  668. and you can

  669. ask us about

  670. that afterwards.

  671. But of

  672. far greater

  673. importance is

  674. that Rebecca

  675. can hear

  676. spiritually.

  677. So we

  678. now come to

  679. God and

  680. we ask that

  681. he would

  682. reveal the

  683. kingdom to

  684. her.

  685. Jesus,

  686. will you

  687. put your

  688. fingers in

  689. Rebecca's

  690. ears and

  691. say,

  692. be opened,

  693. so that

  694. she can

  695. understand

  696. who you

  697. are and

  698. trust you

  699. and love

  700. you?

  701. Jesus,

  702. will you

  703. put your

  704. finger on

  705. Rebecca's

  706. tongue and

  707. say,

  708. be opened,

  709. so that

  710. she can

  711. begin to

  712. sign to

  713. others who

  714. are deaf

  715. the abundance

  716. of your

  717. grace so

  718. that they

  719. can be

  720. welcomed

  721. in too?

  722. Now,

  723. I know

  724. that's very

  725. personal for

  726. us,

  727. but I

  728. think it

  729. illustrates the

  730. prayer

  731. prayer of

  732. every single

  733. one of us

  734. here.

  735. Isn't that

  736. what we

  737. ask for

  738. our own

  739. children?

  740. Isn't this

  741. what we

  742. want for

  743. our own

  744. family and

  745. for our

  746. own friends

  747. who have

  748. not come

  749. to experience

  750. the depth

  751. and the

  752. wonder of

  753. God's

  754. grace,

  755. that he

  756. would put

  757. his fingers

  758. in their

  759. ears and

  760. say,

  761. be opened,

  762. so that

  763. the kingdom

  764. is revealed

  765. to them,

  766. so that

  767. they can

  768. experience

  769. his grace?

  770. The

  771. kingdom of

  772. God will

  773. expand and

  774. it will

  775. grow when

  776. we experience

  777. the touch

  778. of Jesus

  779. in our

  780. lives.

  781. God

  782. will

  783. do that

  784. in people's

  785. lives,

  786. around our

  787. community.

  788. Well, it's

  789. an open

  790. kingdom,

  791. it's a

  792. revealed

  793. kingdom,

  794. but it's

  795. also a

  796. future

  797. kingdom,

  798. the feast

  799. of Jesus

  800. celebrated

  801. by all.

  802. Jesus may

  803. be going

  804. to different

  805. places and

  806. to different

  807. people,

  808. but the

  809. promise of

  810. Jesus remains

  811. the same.

  812. Look at

  813. verse 1

  814. of chapter

  815. 8, he

  816. says,

  817. during those

  818. days,

  819. another large

  820. crowd gathered,

  821. this time it

  822. was 4,000

  823. people,

  824. that's just

  825. the men,

  826. maybe there

  827. are women

  828. and children

  829. there.

  830. Since they

  831. had nothing

  832. to eat,

  833. Jesus called

  834. his disciples

  835. to him and

  836. said,

  837. I have

  838. compassion

  839. for these

  840. people.

  841. I want

  842. to meet

  843. them in

  844. their need.

  845. They have

  846. already been

  847. with me for

  848. three days

  849. and have

  850. had nothing

  851. to eat,

  852. and if I

  853. send them

  854. home hungry,

  855. they're going

  856. to collapse

  857. on the way

  858. because some

  859. of them have

  860. come a long

  861. distance.

  862. Now what

  863. follows in

  864. this story,

  865. and we know

  866. it all so

  867. well,

  868. is quite

  869. remarkable.

  870. It's nothing

  871. short of a

  872. feast.

  873. Look at

  874. verse 5,

  875. how many

  876. loaves do

  877. you have?

  878. Jesus asked

  879. seven.

  880. He told

  881. the crowd

  882. to sit

  883. down on

  884. the ground

  885. and when

  886. he had

  887. taken the

  888. seven loaves

  889. and given

  890. thanks,

  891. he broke

  892. them and

  893. gave them

  894. to his

  895. disciples to

  896. set before

  897. the people

  898. and they

  899. did so.

  900. And they

  901. had a few

  902. small fish

  903. as well and

  904. he gave

  905. thanks for

  906. them also

  907. and he

  908. told the

  909. disciples to

  910. distribute

  911. them.

  912. And the

  913. people ate

  914. and they

  915. were satisfied.

  916. And afterwards

  917. the disciples

  918. picked up

  919. seven

  920. basketfuls

  921. of broken

  922. pieces that

  923. were left

  924. over.

  925. Now we

  926. live in an

  927. age of

  928. plenty,

  929. don't we?

  930. It's normal

  931. for us to

  932. have three

  933. good meals

  934. a day.

  935. In fact,

  936. we've got so

  937. much food in

  938. our cupboards

  939. and our

  940. fridges,

  941. we throw

  942. it away.

  943. These people

  944. that are with

  945. Jesus are

  946. used to one

  947. basic meal

  948. and even that

  949. was rationed.

  950. In fact,

  951. we're told

  952. here they

  953. haven't eaten

  954. in three

  955. days.

  956. So they're

  957. pretty hungry

  958. guys.

  959. So you

  960. could imagine

  961. what this

  962. would have

  963. been like.

  964. Bread and

  965. fish,

  966. as much as

  967. you wanted.

  968. All you

  969. could eat,

  970. seconds and

  971. thirds and

  972. as much as

  973. you liked.

  974. To the point

  975. of where it

  976. says they

  977. were completely

  978. satisfied.

  979. They even

  980. went home

  981. with a doggy

  982. bag.

  983. There was

  984. so much

  985. left over.

  986. And to

  987. top it

  988. all off,

  989. this feast

  990. was free,

  991. provided

  992. completely

  993. by Jesus.

  994. So what's

  995. going on?

  996. Is Jesus

  997. trying to get

  998. on to

  999. MasterChef

  1000. or something?

  1001. Well,

  1002. I don't

  1003. think so.

  1004. Again,

  1005. we've got

  1006. to understand

  1007. our Old

  1008. Testament.

  1009. So jump

  1010. back to

  1011. Isaiah

    Isaiah 25 chapter mention

  1012. chapter 25.

  1013. Again,

  1014. this is

  1015. one of

  1016. these

  1017. little

  1018. pictures

  1019. amongst

  1020. all the

  1021. kind of

  1022. the judgment

  1023. that's going

  1024. on that

  1025. God is

  1026. pronouncing.

  1027. And we

  1028. get this

  1029. wonderful

  1030. picture of

  1031. the new

  1032. creation of

  1033. heaven itself,

  1034. something that

  1035. God is going

  1036. to do.

  1037. And look

  1038. how he

  1039. describes it.

  1040. Isaiah

    Isaiah 25:6

  1041. chapter 25

  1042. verse 6.

  1043. On this

  1044. mountain,

  1045. the Lord

  1046. Almighty

  1047. will prepare

  1048. a feast

  1049. of rich

  1050. food for

  1051. all peoples,

  1052. a banquet

  1053. of aged

  1054. wine,

  1055. the best

  1056. of meats

  1057. and the

  1058. finest

  1059. of wines.

  1060. And here

  1061. we are

  1062. in Mark's

  1063. Gospel.

  1064. Jesus has

  1065. just prepared

  1066. a feast

  1067. for all

  1068. these people,

  1069. 4,000 of

  1070. them.

  1071. And okay,

  1072. it's bread

  1073. and fish,

  1074. it's a little

  1075. bit different

  1076. to fine

  1077. wines and

  1078. roast beef,

  1079. but my

  1080. word,

  1081. this is still

  1082. a feast

  1083. for these

  1084. people,

  1085. isn't it?

  1086. It's almost

  1087. like an

  1088. appetizer,

  1089. the first

  1090. course for

  1091. what's to

  1092. come.

  1093. It's a

  1094. foretaste

  1095. of this

  1096. much greater

  1097. promise,

  1098. the promise

  1099. of heaven

  1100. itself,

  1101. the new

  1102. creation,

  1103. where God's

  1104. people will

  1105. live forever

  1106. and ever

  1107. and ever

  1108. and be

  1109. eternally

  1110. satisfied

  1111. satisfied.

  1112. But why

  1113. does Jesus

  1114. repeat this

  1115. same miracle?

  1116. Only

  1117. recently in

  1118. Mark's

  1119. Gospel,

  1120. we read

  1121. of the

  1122. miracle of

  1123. feeding the

  1124. 5,000.

  1125. Okay,

  1126. there was a

  1127. bit of

  1128. difference,

  1129. there were

  1130. five loaves

  1131. and two

  1132. fish there,

  1133. but it's

  1134. pretty much

  1135. the same,

  1136. isn't it?

  1137. Why does

  1138. he repeat

  1139. the same

  1140. miracle again?

  1141. well,

  1142. the one

  1143. big difference

  1144. between these

  1145. two miracles

  1146. is his

  1147. audience.

  1148. Earlier,

  1149. the people

  1150. were all

  1151. Jewish.

  1152. This time,

  1153. he's in a

  1154. different place

  1155. with different

  1156. people.

  1157. They're all

  1158. Gentiles,

  1159. they're all

  1160. outsiders,

  1161. they're all

  1162. unclean,

  1163. they're all

  1164. pagans,

  1165. they're people

  1166. who don't

  1167. go to church

  1168. and they

  1169. don't read

  1170. their Bible.

  1171. In other

  1172. words,

  1173. he's saying

  1174. to them,

  1175. I am

  1176. providing

  1177. a feast.

  1178. The feast

  1179. of heaven

  1180. which is

  1181. promised for

  1182. you is

  1183. open to

  1184. all people.

  1185. I don't

  1186. care who

  1187. you are

  1188. or where

  1189. you come

  1190. from,

  1191. it's open

  1192. to you

  1193. all.

  1194. In fact,

  1195. it's the

  1196. kind of

  1197. feast that

  1198. we all

  1199. long for.

  1200. Again,

  1201. look at

  1202. Isaiah

    Isaiah 25:7

  1203. chapter 25

  1204. verse 7.

  1205. He says

  1206. it's a feast

  1207. for all

  1208. peoples.

  1209. On this

  1210. mountain

  1211. he will

  1212. destroy the

  1213. shroud

  1214. that

  1215. enfolds

  1216. all

  1217. people.

  1218. This

  1219. blanket

  1220. if you

  1221. like

  1222. that

  1223. covers

  1224. people

  1225. with

  1226. darkness.

  1227. The

  1228. sheet

  1229. that

  1230. covers

  1231. all

  1232. nations.

  1233. He will

  1234. swallow

  1235. up

  1236. death

  1237. forever.

  1238. The

  1239. sovereign

  1240. Lord

  1241. will

  1242. wipe

  1243. away

  1244. the

  1245. tears

  1246. from

  1247. all

  1248. their

  1249. faces.

  1250. He

  1251. will

  1252. remove

  1253. the

  1254. disgrace

  1255. of

  1256. his

  1257. people

  1258. from

  1259. all

  1260. the

  1261. earth.

  1262. The

  1263. Lord

  1264. has

  1265. spoken.

  1266. This

  1267. promised

  1268. feast

  1269. will

  1270. include

  1271. people

  1272. of all

  1273. nations

  1274. regardless

  1275. of race

  1276. or religion.

  1277. And he's

  1278. making it

  1279. crystal clear

  1280. that it's

  1281. for people

  1282. like you

  1283. and me

  1284. who mess

  1285. up and

  1286. who fail

  1287. all the

  1288. time.

  1289. And it's

  1290. going to be a

  1291. feast that's

  1292. going to be

  1293. celebrated with

  1294. life.

  1295. Because he

  1296. says here

  1297. death is

  1298. going to be

  1299. swallowed up

  1300. forever.

  1301. forever.

  1302. And living

  1303. in a

  1304. broken

  1305. world

  1306. where

  1307. death

  1308. sometimes

  1309. invades

  1310. not just

  1311. to old

  1312. people

  1313. but as

  1314. we were

  1315. reminded

  1316. today

  1317. sometimes

  1318. to little

  1319. people.

  1320. But the

  1321. promise

  1322. in the

  1323. midst

  1324. of all

  1325. the

  1326. brokenness

  1327. that we

  1328. are

  1329. surrounded

  1330. with

  1331. day in

  1332. day out.

  1333. Here is

  1334. a feast

  1335. where he

  1336. will swallow

  1337. up death

  1338. forever

  1339. and the

  1340. sovereign

  1341. Lord

  1342. will wipe

  1343. away the

  1344. tears

  1345. from all

  1346. their faces.

  1347. A feast

  1348. filled with

  1349. joy and

  1350. happiness

  1351. because there

  1352. is no more

  1353. pain

  1354. and no more

  1355. heartaches.

  1356. And this

  1357. is the

  1358. Jesus who

  1359. has come

  1360. into this

  1361. world

  1362. who has

  1363. invaded

  1364. into our

  1365. lives

  1366. to offer

  1367. this future

  1368. feast

  1369. promised

  1370. to all

  1371. his people.

  1372. The

  1373. kingdom of

  1374. God will

  1375. expand

  1376. when we

  1377. anticipate

  1378. and look

  1379. forward

  1380. to the

  1381. feast

  1382. that Jesus

  1383. has to

  1384. offer.

  1385. This is

  1386. three stories

  1387. combined

  1388. combined

  1389. together

  1390. showing us

  1391. that Jesus

  1392. is continually

  1393. moving out

  1394. to different

  1395. people and

  1396. different places.

  1397. We're never

  1398. meant to be

  1399. stuck in the

  1400. one place

  1401. and with the

  1402. same people.

  1403. We've got a

  1404. kingdom to

  1405. build.

  1406. A kingdom

  1407. where the

  1408. grace of

  1409. God will

  1410. flow.

  1411. The kingdom

  1412. that is going

  1413. to be revealed

  1414. as Jesus

  1415. touches people

  1416. alive.

  1417. The kingdom

  1418. will grow

  1419. as this

  1420. feast is

  1421. being celebrated

  1422. right now

  1423. by people

  1424. like you

  1425. and me.

  1426. We need

  1427. to pray

  1428. that God

  1429. will build

  1430. his kingdom

  1431. through us

  1432. and be

  1433. pleased to

  1434. see many

  1435. people

  1436. welcomed

  1437. in.

  1438. Let's pray

  1439. together.

  1440. Our Father

  1441. God, we

  1442. thank you

  1443. that in

  1444. your generosity

  1445. and in

  1446. your goodness

  1447. you have

  1448. reached out

  1449. to people

  1450. like us.

  1451. Different

  1452. people

  1453. represented

  1454. here

  1455. from

  1456. different

  1457. places.

  1458. But yet

  1459. you have

  1460. made it

  1461. your business

  1462. to reach

  1463. out to

  1464. us.

  1465. To welcome

  1466. us into

  1467. your kingdom.

  1468. To be

  1469. satisfied

  1470. with your

  1471. grace.

  1472. To be

  1473. filled

  1474. with it.

  1475. Thank you

  1476. that you

  1477. have revealed

  1478. the kingdom

  1479. to us.

  1480. That you've

  1481. opened up

  1482. our ears

  1483. to understand.

  1484. And please

  1485. would you

  1486. open up

  1487. our mouths

  1488. and our

  1489. lives

  1490. so that

  1491. we will

  1492. speak the

  1493. kingdom

  1494. to other

  1495. people.

  1496. And we

  1497. thank you

  1498. that we

  1499. have a

  1500. future

  1501. to look

  1502. forward to.

  1503. A great

  1504. feast.

  1505. We long

  1506. for that

  1507. day.

  1508. And please

  1509. keep us

  1510. faithful

  1511. and please

  1512. help us

  1513. to be about

  1514. your work

  1515. and the

  1516. building of

  1517. your kingdom

  1518. until that

  1519. day comes.

  1520. In Jesus'

  1521. name.

  1522. Amen.

  1523. Amen.

  1524. We're going

  1525. to sing

  1526. something that

  1527. reflects really

  1528. what we've

  1529. been looking

  1530. at.

  1531. Your glorious

  1532. cause, oh

  1533. God, engages

  1534. our hearts.

  1535. It's all

  1536. about the

  1537. kingdom

  1538. growing, the

  1539. kingdom

  1540. expanding, and

  1541. God using

  1542. people like

  1543. us who

  1544. have

  1545. experienced

  1546. it in

  1547. our own

  1548. lives, that

  1549. we would

  1550. go and be

  1551. about his

  1552. work.

  1553. Let's stand

  1554. together as

  1555. we sing.

  1556. Amen.

  1557. Amen.

  1558. Amen.

  1559. Amen.

  1560. Amen.

  1561. Amen.

  1562. Amen.

  1563. Amen.

  1564. Amen.

  1565. Amen.

  1566. Amen.

  1567. Amen.

  1568. Amen.

  1569. Amen.

  1570. Amen.

  1571. Amen.

  1572. Amen.

  1573. Amen.

  1574. Amen.

  1575. Your glorious Father God

  1576. Engages our hearts

1577. May Jesus Christ be known

  1578. Wherever we are

1579. We ask not for ourselves

  1580. For your renown

  1581. The cross was made

  1582. So we pray

  1583. So we are not

  1584. Let your kingdom come

1585. Let your will be done

1586. That every heart might know your name

1587. Let your song be heard

  1588. Everywhere I heard

  1589. But your song be

1590. On this gift of life

  1591. And the kingdom come

  1592. The kingdom come

  1593. Give us your strength

  1594. Give us your strength

  1595. Oh God

  1596. The will you do

  1597. Perform your wondrous deeds

1598. And also our will be

  1599. Lord Jesus

  1600. Lord Jesus

  1601. Lord Jesus

  1602. Lord Jesus

  1603. Lord Jesus

  1604. Lord Jesus

  1605. Lord Jesus

  1606. Lord Jesus
