  1. at the back and turn to Hebrews chapter 11 and I haven't got a page number but if somebody does

    Hebrews 11 chapter mention

  2. they can tell me what it is and I'll shout it out to help you.

  3. It's 12.09, 1-2-0-9 if you're using a red covered Bible. 1-2-0-9 Hebrews chapter 11

    Hebrews 11 chapter mention

  4. and we're going to read verses 1 through to 16.

  5. Hebrews 11, 1 through 16 on page 1209.

  6. So as we read, remember this is God speaking to us.

  7. Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.

  8. This is what the ancients were commended for.

  9. By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God's command so that what is seen

  10. was not made out of what was visible.

  11. By faith Abel offered God a better sacrifice than Cain did.

  12. By faith he was commended as a righteous man when God spoke well of his offerings.

  13. And by faith he still speaks even though he is dead.

  14. By faith Enoch was taken from this life so that he did not experience death.

  15. He could not be found because God had taken him away.

  16. For before he was taken he was commended as one who pleased God.

  17. And without faith it is impossible to please God because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists

  18. and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.

  19. By faith Noah when warned about things not yet seen in holy fear built an ark to save his family.

  20. By his faith he condemned the world and became heir of the righteousness that comes by faith.

  21. By faith Abraham when called to go to a place he would later receive as his inheritance

  22. obeyed and went even though he did not know where he was going.

  23. By faith he made his home in the promised land like a stranger in a foreign country.

  24. He lived in tents as did Isaac and Jacob who were heirs with him of the same promise.

  25. For he was looking forward to the city with foundations whose architect and builder is God.

  26. By faith Abraham even though he was past age and Sarah herself was barren

  27. was unable to become a father because he considered him faithful who had made the promise.

  28. And so from this one man and he as good as dead

  29. came descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and as countless as the sand on the seashore.

  30. All these people were still living by faith when they died.

  31. They did not receive the things promised.

  32. They only saw them and welcomed them from a distance.

  33. And they admitted that they were aliens and strangers on earth.

  34. People who say such things show that they are looking for a country of their own.

  35. If they had been thinking of the country they had left

  36. they would have had opportunity to return.

  37. Instead they were longing for a better country, a heavenly one.

  38. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God

  39. for he has prepared a city for them.

  40. And please come and speak

  41. and I'm going to pray for you and then you can carry on.

  42. So let's just pray together.

  43. Father again we thank you for your words.

  44. Thank you that we have it in our language.

  45. Thank you that you've given us the ability to read.

  46. Thank you that you've given us teachers to explain it to us.

  47. But ultimately we need your Holy Spirit

  48. and pray that he would be at work through and through us.

  49. So that we can better comprehend and understand

  50. that it would change us

  51. and bring us more on board what you are doing

  52. and change us to be the people you want us to be.

  53. In Jesus name we all pray.

  54. Amen.

  55. Thank you.

  56. Thank you.

  57. Thank you for having us around.

  58. It's good to meet up with you again

  59. and thank you for your interest and involvement

  60. in what we're doing in lots of different ways.

  61. Look forward to chatting with more of you over lunch

  62. if you're around and able to stay for that as well.

  63. We're going to have a look this morning

  64. at some of these verses in Hebrews 11 and 12.

  65. So if you have that on standby we'll be there in a minute.

  66. But as Johnny said at the beginning

  67. the Bible is one book isn't it?

  68. With one overarching theme.

  69. And you know wherever you cut the Bible

  70. you find that it's all about the mission of God.

  71. It is one book with one complete message in that way.

  72. Sometimes we might think that there are certain

  73. kind of mission passages that we think of

  74. like Acts 1-8 where it says

  75. go in to be my witnesses in Jerusalem

  76. and Judea and Samaria and the ends of the earth.

  77. Or we might think of Matthew 28

  78. where Jesus tells his disciples to go into all the world

  79. and preach the gospel and so on.

  80. But one of the things that is important for us to realize

  81. is that because God is a God of mission

  82. he is on a mission to call and recreate a people for himself

  83. to forgive us and to fill us with himself

  84. and to have us live with him and glorify him forever

  85. in a new heaven and a new earth

  86. because that's his vision.

  87. That's what the whole Bible is about.

  88. That's his purpose in this world

  89. and that's the mission that then

  90. as we become one of his people

  91. he calls us to join with him on.

  92. And so when you look at the Bible through those eyes

  93. you realize the whole thing is about mission.

  94. It's all about it.

  95. So from early on after the fall in Genesis

  96. you get that hope held out of the Messiah

  97. who would crush Satan's head

  98. and then you get Abraham

  99. who's going to have a descendant

  100. who would bless the whole world

  101. and you've got then the nation that comes from Abraham

  102. Israel that is meant to be a light to the nations

  103. and then Jesus finally comes

  104. and then he dies for the world

  105. he is risen again

  106. he's ascended into heaven

  107. he sends his spirit into his followers

  108. who then scatter all over the planet

  109. and you can see it all the way through.

  110. And then when you have all the letters of the New Testament

  111. that this is the context

  112. in which all those letters are written

  113. they're written from people on a mission

  114. to other people on a mission

  115. about the mission.

  116. That's what it's all to do with.

  117. And then we find ourselves in that era ourselves

  118. of being in this time where

  119. Jesus has gone back to heaven

  120. he sent his spirit

  121. and we're living in a world

  122. trying to spread it as far as we can.

  123. It's our turn now if you like.

  124. The baton is in our hands

  125. and it's our turn in this generation.

  126. And we'll think some more about that later.

  127. But the fact is that the need is still massive isn't it?

  128. It's still a big task.

  129. When Jesus said go and preach the gospel everywhere

  130. there are some pretty large areas of the world

  131. that just haven't heard yet.

  132. Of course there's many people in our own countries

  133. as well aren't there?

  134. But you start thinking around the planet

  135. and you look at a website like joshuaproject.net

  136. if you've never looked at that

  137. you have a look

  138. and they reckon that there are

  139. over 16,000 different people groups in the world

  140. and as they've done their research

  141. they reckon that 6,954 of them

  142. are effectively unreached.

  143. So about 40% of the people groups of the world

  144. they say are effectively unreached.

  145. There may be one or two Christians in some cases

  146. but there isn't an established indigenous church

  147. in those people groups.

  148. And they represent about 2.8 billion people

  149. around the world.

  150. And then you think about our own countries

  151. that maybe have something of a Christian heritage

  152. but they're tough now aren't they?

  153. They're tough ground

  154. and missionaries are now coming here.

  155. And so when you think about our job in the world

  156. that we're part of God's people

  157. and we're now joining with him on his mission

  158. and you start to think

  159. well what kind of people then does he want us to be?

  160. What does he want us to be like?

  161. And having said that the whole Bible is about mission

  162. we could look anywhere in many ways

  163. but we're going to look at Hebrews chapter 11

    Hebrews 11 chapter mention

  164. because I think that we're going to find encouragement

  165. and challenge in this chapter

  166. to live out what I want to call

  167. ordinary people taking faith-filled risks for the kingdom.

  168. If you're going to summarise the whole thing this morning

  169. you could put that.

  170. Ordinary people taking faith-filled risks

  171. for the kingdom.

  172. And to give you a really quick background

  173. to get up to speed on Hebrews at this point

  174. this letter is written to a bunch of Jewish Christians

  175. who were finding it really hard to follow Jesus.

  176. They're living in an environment where

  177. it was very hostile

  178. people didn't like them being believers

  179. and they were just finding it difficult

  180. so that they were tempted to give up.

  181. They were really tempted to jack it all in

  182. and go back to how it was before

  183. thinking maybe that just would have been easier.

  184. And this letter is written to say

  185. please don't give up.

  186. It is worth it.

  187. Keep on going.

  188. You can do it.

  189. Jesus is better.

  190. He is worth it.

  191. You can keep on trusting him.

  192. And wants them to persevere right on to the end.

  193. And so as part of his effort

  194. to encourage the Christians not to give up

  195. we then get this chapter

  196. where he parades all these different people

  197. from through the Bible

  198. as examples of people who kept on going

  199. and kept on following God

  200. no matter what came their way.

  201. He's trying to encourage them to say

  202. look at these people who did it.

  203. You can keep on going as well.

  204. And of course there's so much in here

  205. that you could spend weeks and weeks

  206. going through this chapter.

  207. We're just going to skim over

  208. and drop in on two or three examples.

  209. And the first one I want us to look at

  210. is Noah in verse 7.

  211. And have a look at what he has to say about him.

  212. He says there in verse 7

  213. by faith Noah

  214. when warned about things not yet seen

  215. in holy fear

  216. built an ark to save his family.

  217. By faith he condemned the world

  218. and became heir of the righteousness

  219. that comes by faith.

  220. And I know when you get

  221. some of these characters

  222. from a long time ago

  223. you can almost have this feeling

  224. like they're not quite real.

  225. You know?

  226. They're a bit mythical

  227. you sometimes can feel.

  228. So I sometimes think

  229. how my kids one minute

  230. would be playing with

  231. a little Bob the Builder

  232. and then they've got

  233. a little wooden Mr. Noah.

  234. And they're sort of, you know,

  235. together it's almost like

  236. they didn't feel very real sometimes.

  237. But we need to try and

  238. get our head around the fact that

  239. Mr. Noah

  240. was a real man.

  241. He was a real bloke

  242. who lived

  243. in the real world.

  244. And just the reality

  245. of what he faced.

  246. At the risk of appealing to Hollywood

  247. to get us back to reality.

  248. I don't know if you've ever seen

  249. the film Evan Almighty

  250. but it was the follow-up

  251. to Bruce Almighty

  252. which was a bit more famous.

  253. And whilst Evan Almighty

  254. probably isn't going to go down

  255. in the annals of

  256. classic cinematography

  257. I found it quite interesting

  258. because the idea is

  259. that this guy

  260. is in 21st century America

  261. but he has like

  262. a Mr. Noah type experience.

  263. He has to build a boat

  264. in the middle of nowhere.

  265. And the thing that I thought

  266. was interesting about the film

  267. was just how ridiculous

  268. and embarrassed

  269. he was about doing it.

  270. And the ridicule

  271. that people heaped on him.

  272. And you think about

  273. if he actually

  274. if God actually asked you

  275. to do something like that

  276. what that would be like.

  277. It was just

  278. odd

  279. and embarrassing

  280. and awful

  281. and we can maybe read back

  282. on the Noah story

  283. and say oh yeah

  284. of course he built a boat.

  285. Of course he did.

  286. But it was really hard for him.

  287. It was really hard

  288. and the film kind of

  289. portrayed that quite well.

  290. It just seemed

  291. unfathomably stupid

  292. to build a boat.

  293. And the same for the real Noah.

  294. It was no different.

  295. He was an ordinary man.

  296. It was just as bizarre

  297. and embarrassing

  298. for him to do that.

  299. But

  300. it says

  301. when he was warned

  302. about unseen events

  303. in holy fear

  304. he built the ark

  305. and so

  306. he saved his family

  307. and condemned the world.

  308. In other words

  309. he feared God

  310. more than he feared man

  311. and so he basically said

  312. to the man around him

  313. you're wrong

  314. and so became part of

  315. the family of God.

  316. I'm going God's way

  317. you're not right

  318. when you ridicule this

  319. I'm going to do what he says.

  320. And

  321. the whole

  322. people pleasing

  323. thing

  324. is a tough one

  325. to overcome

  326. for most of us

  327. isn't it?

  328. The fear of people.

  329. It's one of the reasons

  330. that we don't

  331. often stick our necks out

  332. and say some of the things

  333. that maybe we

  334. think we should.

  335. It's just that

  336. basic instinct that

  337. we don't want to look stupid.

  338. Most of us have it.

  339. We want to be liked.

  340. And it's a big thing

  341. and that's why the Bible

  342. says so much about

  343. the fear of other people.

  344. It's a theme that comes up

  345. quite a lot

  346. because God knows

  347. that we're wired that way

  348. and that it's difficult.

  349. But if you think about

  350. Noah's life

  351. if he had not loved

  352. the affirmation of God

  353. more than the affirmation

  354. of the people

  355. who were around him

  356. he would never have

  357. filled the boat

  358. would he?

  359. He just wouldn't have done it.

  360. He was more concerned

  361. about what God

  362. thought of him

  363. and seeking his approval

  364. than he was about

  365. what anybody else said.

  366. An ordinary guy

  367. with all the same

  368. kind of hangups

  369. and emotions

  370. and life

  371. as we would have

  372. all the same

  373. kind of fragilities

  374. he said

  375. I'm going to do this thing.

  376. And he says

  377. by faith

  378. he did it.

  379. Then look at another one

  380. in verse 8

  381. another example

  382. look at Abraham.

  383. So Abraham it says

  384. in verse 8

  385. when called to go

  386. to a place

  387. he would later receive

  388. as his inheritance

  389. obeyed and went

  390. even though

  391. he did not know

  392. where he was going.

  393. By faith

  394. he made his home

  395. in the promised land

  396. like a stranger

  397. in a foreign country

  398. lived in tents

  399. as did Isaac and Jacob

  400. who were heirs with him

  401. of the same promise

  402. for he was looking forward

  403. to the city

  404. with foundations

  405. who's architect

  406. and builder

  407. is God.

  408. So here's how

  409. being a faith-filled

  410. risk taker

  411. worked out for Abraham.

  412. He obeyed God

  413. and left his home

  414. even though

  415. he didn't know

  416. where he was going.

  417. Again

  418. don't just sort of

  419. categorise this

  420. as a legendary

  421. Abraham

  422. of course he would do that

  423. because he was Abraham

  424. kind of classic story.

  425. He wasn't superhuman

  426. he was just

  427. a mere mortal

  428. who messed it up

  429. at times

  430. got it wrong

  431. sometimes he lied

  432. under pressure

  433. we see that in the Bible

  434. he didn't always

  435. make the right decisions

  436. but he trusted God

  437. to physically

  438. set out on a journey

  439. without knowing

  440. where the end point was.

  441. I mean

  442. you imagine

  443. doing that

  444. you're packing up

  445. all your stuff

  446. sticking it all in the car

  447. pack up your house even

  448. stick it all in the back

  449. of a lorry

  450. and you get in

  451. and you're asked

  452. the kids say

  453. where are we going?

  454. You say

  455. don't know

  456. we're just setting off.

  457. Imagine if they start saying

  458. are we there yet?

  459. Can you say

  460. yeah kids

  461. you have no idea.

  462. Of course Abraham

  463. didn't have any kids

  464. so he didn't have that trouble

  465. but nevertheless

  466. it was

  467. it was

  468. that weird.

  469. He didn't know

  470. where he was going

  471. but he trusted God

  472. and went out

  473. even though

  474. he could not see

  475. and stepped out

  476. in faith.

  477. And verse 17

  478. has an even more

  479. extreme example of this

  480. as Abraham is tested

  481. and asked

  482. to offer Isaac

  483. as he then

  484. by this point now

  485. has had a son

  486. asked to offer Isaac

  487. as a sacrifice

  488. and you know

  489. you read this

  490. and for any parent

  491. the thought is just

  492. gut wrenching

  493. so again

  494. don't think these people

  495. were different to us

  496. it would have been

  497. just as hard

  498. for him

  499. but he believed

  500. that God

  501. had said

  502. God had his original plan

  503. to say

  504. you know

  505. I'm going to give you

  506. a nation

  507. make you into a nation

  508. through Isaac

  509. and now

  510. he's willing to obey God

  511. when God says

  512. I want you to sacrifice

  513. your son

  514. and he must have

  515. scrambled his brain

  516. really to have

  517. how do these two things

  518. fit together?

  519. So verse 18

  520. it says

  521. well starting in verse 17

  522. he who had received

  523. the promises

  524. was about to sacrifice

  525. his one and only son

  526. even though

  527. God had said to him

  528. it is through Isaac

  529. that your offspring

  530. will be reckoned.

  531. But verse 19

  532. tells us

  533. how his mind

  534. was working.

  535. Verse 19 says

  536. Abraham reasoned

  537. that God could raise

  538. the dead

  539. and figuratively speaking

  540. he did receive

  541. Isaac back from death.

  542. Isn't that great?

  543. Abraham had never seen

  544. anyone raised

  545. from the dead.

  546. It wasn't that he thought

  547. oh yeah

  548. this happened

  549. but

  550. he so believed

  551. what God said

  552. he just simply reasoned

  553. that if God

  554. actually wanted him

  555. to sacrifice Isaac

  556. and he said

  557. that he was going

  558. to be the means

  559. to make a whole nation

  560. God must be planning

  561. to bring him back

  562. to life.

  563. And although

  564. in the end

  565. of course

  566. God didn't

  567. require him

  568. to kill him

  569. that was

  570. where Abraham

  571. had got to

  572. he trusted God

  573. to that extent

  574. now I don't think

  575. that would have

  576. made it any easier

  577. to lift a knife

  578. but

  579. he believed

  580. that

  581. that God

  582. would do this.

  583. an ordinary man

  584. though he was

  585. he was full of faith

  586. in what God said

  587. and was prepared

  588. to take

  589. extraordinary risks

  590. there.

  591. Let's zoom in on

  592. one more as well

  593. in verse 24

  594. so verse 24

  595. talking about Moses

  596. now it says

  597. by faith

  598. Moses

  599. when he had grown up

  600. refused to be known

  601. as the son of

  602. Pharaoh's daughter

  603. he chose to be

  604. ill treated

  605. along with the people

  606. of God

  607. rather than to enjoy

  608. the pleasures of sin

  609. for a short time.

  610. So here's Moses

  611. there's been the whole

  612. bulrushes thing

  613. which leads

  614. providentially

  615. to him being part of

  616. the royal household

  617. of Egypt.

  618. So

  619. remember

  620. this is the superpower

  621. of the day.

  622. This is a seriously

  623. good deal

  624. he's got here.

  625. Through an unlikely

  626. series of events

  627. he now finds himself

  628. part of the first family

  629. of the superpower

  630. the most powerful

  631. nation of the world

  632. but it says

  633. he refused to be known

  634. as the son of

  635. Pharaoh's daughter

  636. and chose to be

  637. ill treated with the

  638. people of God

  639. instead.

  640. Which again

  641. on the surface of it

  642. seems ridiculous

  643. you may sort of

  644. spot the pattern here

  645. that they're often

  646. ending up doing

  647. things that

  648. seem

  649. odd.

  650. Why would you

  651. give up

  652. comfort

  653. and ease

  654. and applause

  655. in order to be

  656. beaten up

  657. and despised?

  658. Why give up

  659. the celebrity

  660. lifestyle

  661. for the

  662. pauper lifestyle?

  663. Why would

  664. anybody do that?

  665. It just seems

  666. illogical

  667. until

  668. you get to

  669. the point that

  670. Moses got to

  671. in verse 26

  672. where it says

  673. he regarded

  674. disgrace for the

  675. sake of Christ

  676. interestingly

  677. it mentions

  678. Christ there

  679. of course

  680. this was before

  681. Christ

  682. but effectively

  683. his trust

  684. was in Christ

  685. he regarded

  686. disgrace for the

  687. sake of Christ

  688. as of greater

  689. value than the

  690. treasures of Egypt

  691. because he was

  692. looking ahead

  693. to his reward

  694. and that makes

  695. much more sense

  696. doesn't it?

  697. His reason for

  698. making these choices

  699. was not that he

  700. liked being

  701. disgraced

  702. but that he

  703. wanted something

  704. more than

  705. pleasures of

  706. money or fame

  707. or whatever you

  708. want to call it

  709. he got his eyes

  710. fixed

  711. on a reward

  712. that was so

  713. great it made

  714. all the treasures

  715. of Egypt just

  716. look like rubble

  717. that was the

  718. perspective he

  719. had

  720. he wanted to

  721. have this

  722. reward of being

  723. part of God's

  724. family

  725. part of God's

  726. kingdom

  727. one of his

  728. people

  729. and so it

  730. says he refused

  731. to be enticed

  732. by sin

  733. which

  734. sin is so

  735. often isn't it

  736. what keeps us

  737. from living a

  738. sort of faith

  739. filled life

  740. living out our

  741. lives for God

  742. because sin in

  743. our lives in

  744. whatever form it

  745. comes it often

  746. has the effect

  747. doesn't it of

  748. just sapping

  749. our spiritual

  750. energy

  751. leaves us

  752. feeling kind

  753. of pathetic

  754. and defeated

  755. and you know

  756. that's my

  757. experience

  758. I'm sure many

  759. of you would

  760. be the same

  761. that you just

  762. you lose

  763. the kind of

  764. focus

  765. and it's a real

  766. issue and

  767. what Moses did

  768. here is

  769. actually the way

  770. that faith deals

  771. with the challenge

  772. and temptation

  773. of sin

  774. what he did

  775. is the right

  776. thing because

  777. it wasn't just

  778. about I'm going

  779. to try really

  780. hard not to do

  781. this I try

  782. really really

  783. hard not to

  784. do this

  785. actually what

  786. he did was

  787. he put his

  788. focus on

  789. something better

  790. so this is how

  791. faith deals with

  792. it it looks up

  793. and sees something

  794. better than

  795. whatever the

  796. temptation of

  797. the current

  798. situation might

  799. be and

  800. fixes its eyes

  801. on that

  802. and says

  803. this is better

  804. than whatever

  805. temporary

  806. satisfaction or

  807. enjoyment or

  808. release I might

  809. get out of this

  810. particular temptation

  811. this is better

  812. there is something

  813. better and that

  814. realization in

  815. Moses case

  816. enabled him to

  817. go and take

  818. incredible faith

  819. filled risks

  820. so in his

  821. case standing

  822. in front of

  823. that leader of

  824. the world

  825. superpower and

  826. saying you're

  827. wrong

  828. and you've

  829. got to let

  830. God's people

  831. go

  832. and verse

  833. 27 to 30

  834. outline how

  835. the people were

  836. released through

  837. the Passover

  838. and across the

  839. Red Sea all

  840. stories you could

  841. go into

  842. themselves we

  843. could just keep

  844. on going with

  845. this what the

  846. writer then says

  847. in verse 32

  848. is right isn't

  849. it you could

  850. just go on

  851. and on and

  852. on what more

  853. shall I say he

  854. says in verse

  855. 32 I don't

  856. have time to

  857. tell about

  858. Gideon Barak

  859. Samson Jephthah

  860. David Samuel

  861. and the prophets

  862. who through

  863. faith conquered

  864. kingdoms administered

  865. justice gained

  866. what was promised

  867. shut the mouths

  868. of lions quenched

  869. the fury of the

  870. flames escaped the

  871. edge of the sword

  872. whose weakness

  873. was turned to

  874. strength and who

  875. became powerful in

  876. battle and routed

  877. foreign armies

  878. women received

  879. their back their

  880. dead raised to

  881. life again but

  882. it wasn't always

  883. positive great glory

  884. stuff because then

  885. others it says

  886. were tortured and

  887. refused to be

  888. released so that

  889. they might get a

  890. better resurrection

  891. some faced jeers and

  892. flogging while others

  893. were chained and put

  894. in prison they were

  895. stoned they were

  896. sawn in two they

  897. were put to death by

  898. the sword they went

  899. about in sheepskins

  900. and goatskins destitute

  901. persecuted and

  902. ill-treated the world

  903. was not worthy of

  904. them

  905. one of the songs our

  906. kids sometimes sing

  907. is um i don't know

  908. if you know it

  909. god's people aren't

  910. super brave superheroes

  911. have you ever heard

  912. that i'm not going to

  913. sing it but um it's

  914. great little song god's

  915. people aren't super

  916. brave superheroes they

  917. don't have muscles from

  918. their heads to their

  919. toes they're not

  920. gladiators that's easy

  921. to see in fact it's

  922. amazing they're just

  923. like you and me and

  924. there's a bit of

  925. shouting and stuff

  926. which will be later

  927. maybe but it's kids

  928. song i actually think

  929. that's quite profound

  930. though because as i

  931. say we we tend to

  932. think of these people

  933. and put them on a bit

  934. of a pedestal and

  935. this says god's people

  936. aren't super brave

  937. superheroes they're

  938. just like you and me

  939. they're ordinary people

  940. and yet they take these

  941. kind of risks and and

  942. and step out in faith in

  943. order to advance the

  944. kingdom of god and it's

  945. all through the bible and

  946. it's through church

  947. history and it's around

  948. in our own day as well

  949. there are many many

  950. places where we see

  951. this there's a man

  952. called um alistair that

  953. um some of us know i i'm

  954. guessing that you guys

  955. would have met him out

  956. in kosovo friend of

  957. from rose and dan's and

  958. others who um he lives

  959. there these days but for

  960. many years he used to

  961. work for open doors uh

  962. getting bibles into

  963. unlikely situations and

  964. one day somebody from

  965. uh open doors contacted

  966. him with a new project

  967. saying that uh he should

  968. go to the philippines

  969. and uh stay in a hotel

  970. and just wait someone

  971. would contact him

  972. kind of james bond like

  973. almost isn't it

  974. someone will contact you

  975. so he went there and

  976. uh he was recruited

  977. basically to be part of

  978. a team taking a ship

  979. into the seas off china

  980. and they dropped a

  981. million bibles uh under

  982. the nose of the chinese

  983. authorities doubled the

  984. number number of bibles

  985. in china overnight and

  986. uh some crazy stuff

  987. happened along the way

  988. like going into the path

  989. of a typhoon which

  990. diverted miraculously and

  991. head off another way and

  992. different things like

  993. that you can if you

  994. google project pearl

  995. there's all kinds of

  996. stuff on the internet

  997. about it time magazine

  998. even wrote an article

  999. about it but you meet

  1000. alistair he's a fairly

  1001. unassuming down to earth

  1002. little scottish fella who

1003. just trust god and put

  1004. some faith filled risks

  1005. in some particular way

1006. that he was called to do

1007. uh you think of uh the

1008. team that one of the

1009. guys uh is uh from our

1010. church is part of out in

  1011. macedonia they've moved

1012. there to start a business

  1013. and be a witness in a

1014. muslim city uh that has

1015. no church and this is a

1016. city where a man who did

  1017. become a believer a little

1018. while ago was tied upside

1019. down to a tree and told

1020. that's what we do to

  1021. christians around here

1022. but these two or three

  1023. families have moved out

  1024. there and amid many

  1025. heart-searching questions

  1026. and lots of difficulties

1027. and how does it work with

1028. the kids and all this sort

1029. of thing and it's hard

1030. work but they're out there

  1031. ordinary people just like

1032. you and me taking faith

1033. filled risks um i was in

1034. north india uh a while

1035. back and uh i was talking

  1036. to somebody before about

1037. that north india is quite

  1038. different to south india

1039. you think about lots of

  1040. mission work that's gone

1041. on in india most of it

1042. was in the south the north

  1043. was fairly untouched such

  1044. that people sometimes dubbed

  1045. it the graveyard of

  1046. christian missions which of

1047. course it wasn't but it

1048. was seen sometimes as the

  1049. place where christianity

1050. just couldn't get to people

  1051. sometimes said um but

  1052. nevertheless it's really

1053. starting to open up and

  1054. the massive number of

  1055. unreached people groups when

1056. you actually look at some

1057. of the stuff that joshua

1058. project talks about loads of

1059. those people groups are in

1060. this big area of north india

  1061. and there's new churches

  1062. starting all the time

  1063. sometimes that such that

  1064. the leaders of the

1065. movements don't even um get

1066. to hear about it until

1067. after the event you know

  1068. you normally in our

  1069. context we think of

1070. planning a church for ages

1071. we're going to plant this

1072. church and this is how we're

1073. going to do it and you have

1074. lots of meetings and in that

  1075. context they sometimes these

  1076. churches just happen

  1077. there's one girl 16 year old

1078. girl i met a couple of times

1079. who kind of started three

  1080. churches by accident

1081. it sounds a bit ridiculous

  1082. doesn't it but she had a

1083. demon cast out of her

1084. which is very much a reality

1085. out there she trusted jesus

1086. and she told people in three

  1087. different villages nearby

1088. about what happened to her

1089. and a whole load of them

1090. decided they were going to

1091. follow jesus so very quickly

1092. there was about 80 of them

1093. and so they all got together in

  1094. a house and they're saying so

1095. um you told us about this so

1096. tell us some more and she's

  1097. like well i don't really know

1098. that much more so let me go

1099. back and talk to the pastor

1100. who told me and then people

1101. brought in some support now

1102. and so on and effectively

1103. uh there's two more fledgling

  1104. churches started about 300

1105. people all together but a lot

1106. of difficulty in that area a lot

1107. of opposition so that when i was

1108. out there talking to some of the

1109. house church leaders we were

1110. going through a bit of acts in

1111. some training and the subject of

1112. persecution came up and i said

1113. how many of you have faced

1114. persecution and they all put

1115. their hands up and looked at me

  1116. like kind of that's a stupid

1117. question why why did you of course

1118. we do one pastor i met explained

1119. how when he became a christian his

1120. own mother and brother tied him to

1121. a tree and beat him and his wife

1122. was going to divorce him until god

1123. spoke to her in a dream and and

1124. then god did a few things and now

  1125. the whole family's christians

1126. that's the edited short down

1127. version but you can see how you

1128. look at some of these contexts it's

  1129. a faith-filled risk to even become a

1130. christian in some of these places

1131. you know from the outset if i become

1132. a christian this is going to mean

1133. it's difficulties for me you go into

1134. it very much with your eyes open that

1135. was true of a baptism that i went to

1136. whether they were baptized down in a

1137. river it was this remote village miles

1138. away from anywhere and they didn't

1139. want to draw attention to it at all so

1140. that people gathered in this village

1141. but then walked in twos and threes so

1142. as to not make it obvious that walked

1143. about a mile through some fields and

1144. woods and so on down to the river i

1145. thought this kind of white cloth around

1146. my head to try and vaguely disguise

1147. that i was a big white guy don't think

1148. i fooled anybody really but you know

1149. they were very concerned to avoid

  1150. unwanted attention because sometimes

1151. mobs had gathered in the past when

1152. they'd had baptisms and so we went

1153. along and eventually we got to this

1154. clearing where the group of christians

1155. were and they went down into the river

1156. and 23 new brothers and sisters were

1157. baptized in the river with the water

1158. buffalo just by in the river with them

1159. and the thing that it's just very

1160. striking to me that it's the way that

1161. for some of these people when you're

1162. in a setting where even becoming a

1163. christian in the first place is risky

1164. where there's the threat of suffering

1165. and persecution it affects the kind of

1166. christian you become so you expect to

1167. take risks you expect that you you need

1168. to have this kind of faith where you're

1169. hanging on to god for everything because

1170. you can't do it all yourself

1171. but bringing it back to the here and

1172. now and into our context

1173. you know our societies are quite risk

  1174. averse aren't they

1175. i suspect the uk might be worse at this

  1176. than ireland

1177. but you know we are we have risk

1178. assessments coming out of our ears and

1179. everything is is is very very cautious

1180. and and obviously there are times when

1181. if you can avoid a simple accident by

1182. doing something sensible then good

1183. obviously that there's many good things

1184. about that even if the paperwork

1185. sometimes gets a bit over the top

  1186. but i think there's a problem that as

1187. cultures in the west sometimes we we're

1188. almost in pursuit of the risk-free life

1189. we we kind of think we can have you know

1190. perfectly safe cars super safe cars

1191. super safe playgrounds safe houses safe

  1192. working environments everything's covered

1193. so this is kind of our right and i think

1194. if we're not careful we also want a safe

  1195. christianity

1196. and maybe we don't ever say that out

1197. loud but given that it's a mindset that

1198. we have for so much of the rest of life

1199. i think we can fairly unwittingly apply it to

1200. our faith as well and it is actually

  1201. deadening to faith

1202. pursue other things if you want they're

1203. fine to a point but please don't pursue

1204. safe christianity because you just don't

1205. find it in the bible it's not there

1206. jesus they take up your cross not your armchair

1207. it's not about going out and looking for

1208. trouble or difficulty obviously and we thank

1209. god that we don't have some of the pressures

1210. that people in other countries may have

1211. but the truth is that for many of us

1212. we will steer clear from anything that will

1213. cause us a little bit of discomfort because

1214. culturally we just don't do discomfort

1215. if we can possibly avoid it

1216. and this matters because the era of living on

1217. the edge for the sake of the extension of

  1218. god's kingdom isn't over

1219. because as i said before it's our turn now

1220. the baton's in our hand

1221. and so when you go back to hebrews 11 again

1222. these are not the records of great activities

1223. of the days of old and they're nice bedtime

  1224. stories and so on

1225. no this faith-filled live on the edge stuff

  1226. was an era

1227. it was the first stage they were the

1228. forerunners in a race that is not over yet

1229. so you look at verse 39 and 40 that's what

1230. this means 39 and 40 at the end of chapter 11

1231. say these were all commended for their faith

1232. yet none of them received what had been

  1233. promised

1234. god had planned something better for us

1235. so that only together with us would they be

1236. made perfect so the reward it's like the end of the race isn't

  1237. it's not over yet

1238. the reward is for us and them together

1239. it's not finished if you're watching the 4x400 meters relay

1240. you don't leave after three of the runners

1241. have taken their turn and say that was good wasn't it

1242. okay let's go and get a coffee

1243. because there's another stage yet

  1244. it's not finished

1245. and this race image is then where the writer goes

1246. if you just go on into the beginning of chapter 12

1247. where he describes this cloud of witnesses

1248. looking on and cheering us on

1249. and so the idea is that these people that he's

1250. been through in chapter 11

1251. the ones that we looked at and all the others as well

1252. he's got this picture where he's saying

  1253. imagine they're watching now

  1254. they're seeing you

  1255. they're in the stands

1256. watching as now you have it

  1257. in your turn

  1258. in your generation

1259. the baton's in your hand

  1260. and they're shouting

1261. come on you can do it

  1262. to these Hebrews

  1263. there

  1264. and to us now

  1265. and so

1266. you learn from what they learned

1267. so it's like Noah is there shouting to us

  1268. and saying

1269. you don't have to fear what others think

  1270. I learned that

  1271. he's saying

1272. you don't have to fear what others think

1273. fear God and trust him

  1274. and Abraham is shouting

  1275. come on

1276. you can trust him with a future that you can't see

1277. and you don't fully understand

  1278. follow him

1279. even if you're not sure where you're going

1280. or how it'll all work out

  1281. you can trust him

  1282. and Moses is shouting

1283. it is possible to love God

  1284. more than you love

  1285. sin

  1286. and temptation

1287. and be free to go out

  1288. and serve him

1289. and these witnesses are all there

1290. as we've got the baton

  1291. in our hand

1292. and so how then do we handle

  1293. the fact

1294. that it's our turn now

1295. and we're on the track

1296. well two things to close off with

1297. from the beginning of chapter 12

  1298. as

  1299. God says

  1300. chapter 12 verse 1

  1301. it says

1302. therefore since we are surrounded

1303. by such a great cloud of witnesses

1304. let us throw off everything that hinders

1305. and the sin that so easily entangles

  1306. and let us run

  1307. with perseverance

  1308. the race

  1309. marked out for us

  1310. we've got to run

1311. but for all of us

1312. there's stuff that holds us back

  1313. that weighs us down

1314. and you think about what it is for you

  1315. because we're all different

1316. what is it for you

  1317. that just

  1318. dampens

  1319. your spiritual fervor

  1320. that just

  1321. distracts you

  1322. or cools you down

1323. what are the things that weigh you

  1324. down

  1325. and our priorities

  1326. can get twisted

  1327. and our vision distorted

1328. we need to see those things

  1329. for what they are

  1330. and

  1331. say

1332. I'm not going to be seduced

  1333. by these things

1334. I'm going to throw them off

1335. I'm going to run the race

1336. I'm going to keep on going

1337. and then second thing is

  1338. he says

  1339. in verse 2

1340. let us fix our eyes on Jesus

  1341. the author

  1342. and perfecter

  1343. of our faith

1344. he's the one who gives us

  1345. our spiritual life

  1346. he's described as

  1347. the author

  1348. and the perfecter

1349. the finisher of our faith

1350. so he's at both ends of it

  1351. if you like

1352. he's the one we get our faith from

1353. and he's also the one we fix

  1354. our eyes on

1355. and if we look away from him

  1356. we're actually cutting off

1357. the supply line of our faith

1358. because he's the author of it

1359. he's the one who gives us it

1360. so we keep our eyes fixed on him

1361. and we're sustained by him

  1362. as we go on

  1363. and finish it

1364. and we follow his example

  1365. too

  1366. because he models

1367. exactly what we're being called to do

  1368. because he says

1369. the perfecter of our faith

1370. who for the joy set before him

  1371. endured the cross

  1372. scorning its shame

1373. sat down at the right hand

  1374. of the throne

  1375. of God

1376. and we're told to keep on going

  1377. consider him who endured

  1378. such opposition

1379. so that you will not grow weary

  1380. and lose heart

1381. you probably can relate to that

  1382. I'm sure

1383. at different points in our lives

  1384. you grow weary

  1385. and you lose heart

  1386. you just think this

  1387. is hard

1388. but don't drop out of the race

  1389. remember that's exactly

1390. what this letter was all about

  1391. telling them

1392. fix your eyes on Jesus

1393. cry out and ask for his help

1394. and say I need your help

1395. I'm going to keep on going

1396. I want to keep on going

  1397. with this race

  1398. and trusting you

  1399. I believe you

  1400. even that prayer

1401. like the guy said to Jesus

  1402. in the gospels

  1403. I believe

  1404. help my unbelief

  1405. I want to believe

1406. I want to trust you

  1407. so then we ask

1408. how are you going to play your part

  1409. in God's mission

1410. what does it look like for you

  1411. to take your turn

  1412. on the track

  1413. as a church

  1414. and individually

  1415. what's next

  1416. basically

1417. lots of great things going on

1418. lots of great things you've done

  1419. but what's next

  1420. and you think globally

  1421. I don't know

  1422. maybe there's things

1423. you can get involved with

1424. in terms of new initiatives

1425. linking up with other churches

1426. so like we're going to talk about

  1427. at the round table

  1428. maybe there's things

1429. that you can get behind

  1430. as a church

  1431. maybe some of you

  1432. might even go

1433. and live in some place

  1434. far from here

  1435. some place that maybe

  1436. you won't find

1437. in your average travel brochure

  1438. but where people need

  1439. the gospel

  1440. thinking locally

  1441. maybe you

  1442. want to go out

1443. on a bit more of a limb

1444. taking a few more risks

  1445. in the community

  1446. around here

  1447. building some friendships

  1448. that might

  1449. just scare you slightly

  1450. living counter-culturally

  1451. treating what you own

1452. and the money you have

1453. in a slightly different way

  1454. I don't know

1455. there's lots of different ideas

  1456. I think that's something for you

  1457. to be praying about

  1458. isn't it

  1459. and talk about

  1460. and think about

  1461. but whether it's here

1462. or whether it's far away

  1463. for all of us

  1464. let's not be duped

  1465. by the dream

  1466. of some kind of

  1467. safe

  1468. sanitized

  1469. tame Christianity

1470. that asks very little of us

  1471. and that is easily

  1472. controlled by us

  1473. may God give us

  1474. the vision

  1475. and the faith

  1476. and the courage

  1477. to live our lives

  1478. for him

  1479. let's pray

1480. Lord we want to thank you

  1481. that you

  1482. give us the faith

  1483. that we need

1484. that you give us the strength

  1485. to follow you

  1486. and thank you

1487. that you've opened our eyes

1488. to you in the first place

1489. that we can know you

  1490. and follow you

  1491. and

  1492. that you've forgiven us

1493. and that you're changing us

  1494. and

1495. that we have this great

  1496. destiny now

  1497. with you

1498. we pray that you'll help us

1499. in the day to day

  1500. living of this life

  1501. help us to

  1502. see ourselves

  1503. as

  1504. on the track

  1505. taking our turn

  1506. in the race

  1507. and to be inspired

1508. by those you've gone before

  1509. and not least

1510. by the example of Jesus

1511. and to fix our eyes

  1512. on him

1513. and we pray that you'd

  1514. help us to

  1515. be clear about

1516. the things that you want us

  1517. to do

1518. and to go out in faith

  1519. and do them

  1520. even though

  1521. it may mean

1522. some things aren't as easy

  1523. as they might be

1524. even though it might mean

  1525. sacrifices in different ways

1526. Lord we pray that you would

1527. help us to be people

1528. who are full of faith

  1529. and prepared

  1530. to take risks

  1531. to serve you

  1532. no matter what

  1533. that may mean

1534. Lord we pray that we would be

  1535. so

  1536. so much loving you

  1537. and loving your glory

  1538. that our own lives

  1539. and priorities

  1540. and comfort

  1541. and everything else

  1542. takes second place

  1543. behind all of that

1544. and that it would all be

  1545. for you

1546. so we pray that you'd give us

  1547. this big vision

  1548. of who you are

  1549. that helps us

  1550. to live

  1551. and give everything

  1552. for you

1553. pray that for the church here

  1554. and for

1555. the church where I am

  1556. as well

  1557. and wherever

  1558. we might serve you

  1559. one day

1560. in the course of our lives

1561. and we ask it all

  1562. for your fame

  1563. and for your glory

  1564. amen

  1565. you

  1566. and we arrive

  1567. to

  1568. heal

  1569. that you

  1570. a

  1571. of who you

  1572. are

  1573. a

  1574. him
