  1. Exodus chapter 12, it's on page 68 of the Church Bible.

    Exodus 12 chapter mention

  2. So Exodus chapter 12 and it's verse 1 to 14.

    Exodus 12 chapter mention

  3. The Lord said to Moses and Aaron in Egypt,

  4. This month is to be for you the first month, the first month of your year.

  5. Tell the whole community of Israel that on the tenth day of this month,

  6. each man is to take a lamb for his family, one for each household.

  7. If any household is too small for a whole lamb,

  8. they must share one with the nearest neighbor,

  9. having taken into account the number of people there are.

  10. You are to determine the amount of lamb needed in accordance with what each person will eat.

  11. The animals you choose must be year-old males, without defect,

  12. and you may take them from the sheep or the goats.

  13. Take care of them until the fourteenth day of the month,

  14. when all the people of the community of Israel must slaughter them at twilight.

  15. Then they are to take some of the blood and put it on the sides and tops of the door frames of the houses

  16. where they eat the lambs.

  17. That same night they are to eat the meat roasted over the fire,

  18. along with bitter herbs and bread made without yeast.

  19. Do not eat the meat raw or cooked in water,

  20. but roast it over the fire, head, legs and inner parts.

  21. Do not leave any of it until morning.

  22. If something is left till morning, you must burn it.

  23. This is how you are to eat it,

  24. with your cloak tucked into your belt,

  25. and your sandals on your feet,

  26. and your staff in your hand.

  27. Eat it in haste, it is the Lord's Passover.

  28. On that same night I will pass through Egypt

  29. and strike down every firstborn,

  30. both men and animals,

  31. and I will bring judgment on all the gods of Egypt.

  32. I am the Lord.

  33. The blood will be assigned to you on the houses where they are,

  34. and when I see the blood, I will pass over you.

  35. No destructive plague will touch you when I strike Egypt.

  36. This is the day you are to commemorate for the generations to come.

  37. You shall celebrate it as a festival to the Lord,

  38. a lasting ordinance.

  39. Okay, this reading is from 1 Corinthians 11, verse 12,

    1 Corinthians 11:12

  40. and that's on page 1152.

  41. That's 1152.

  42. I think I have a book in verse 17.

  43. Oh, right.

  44. Okay.

  45. Yeah, that's 1 Corinthians 11, verse 17.

    1 Corinthians 11:17

  46. In the following directives,

  47. I have no praise for you,

  48. for your meetings do more harm than good.

  49. In the first place,

  50. I hear that when you come together as a church,

  51. there are divisions among you,

  52. and to some extent I believe it.

  53. No doubt there have to be differences among you

  54. to show which of you have God's approval.

  55. When you come together,

  56. it is not the Lord's supper you eat,

  57. for as you eat,

  58. each of you goes ahead without waiting for anybody else.

  59. One remains hungry, another gets drunk.

  60. Don't you have homes to eat and drink in?

  61. Or do you despise the church of God

  62. and humiliate those who have nothing?

  63. What shall I say to you?

  64. Shall I praise you for this?

  65. Certainly not.

  66. For I receive from the Lord

  67. what also passed on to you.

  68. The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed,

  69. took bread,

  70. and when he had given thanks,

  71. he broke and said,

  72. This is my body, which is for you.

  73. Do this in remembrance of me.

  74. In the same way, after supper,

  75. he took the cup, saying,

  76. This is the cup of the new covenant in my blood.

  77. Do this whenever you drink in remembrance of me.

  78. For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup,

  79. you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes.

  80. So, please keep your Bibles open at 1 Corinthians 11.

  81. Kirstie's or Angelina are handing around pens and sheets.

  82. If anybody would like that to take notes,

  83. please feel free to do that.

  84. Looking at different aspects of our gathering on Sundays

  85. when we meet together.

  86. Looking at things like hearing God's word from the Bible,

  87. prayer, singing together,

  88. and something we also do is to remember Jesus' death.

  89. So, this morning we celebrate the Lord's Supper

  90. and we're going to focus and look in that

  91. and hopefully what we do this morning

  92. is going to help us.

  93. It will shape a little bit more

  94. of how we should think about this very simple meal.

  95. Well, let's pray together

  96. and ask for God's help in this.

  97. Our Father, thank you again for your amazing grace.

  98. Thank you for the word of your grace.

  99. Thank you that we can hear you speak to us

  100. by your Spirit.

  101. and we pray that you would continue to change us

  102. and transform us

  103. and as we think about the Lord's Supper,

  104. something we do very often

  105. and maybe we just do without thinking,

  106. we pray that we would learn afresh

  107. what it is all about,

  108. how it changes us

  109. and how it helps us to understand

  110. your grace better.

  111. So, we ask for your help in this this morning.

  112. In Jesus' name.

  113. Amen.

  114. Well, depending on your church tradition,

  115. the celebration of the bread and wine

  116. is known by different names.

  117. So, if you happen to come from a Protestant tradition,

  118. you might call it something like Holy Communion

  119. or the Lord's Supper.

  120. If you come from a Catholic tradition,

  121. you might call it the Eucharist,

  122. which simply means Thanksgiving

  123. or the Sacrament.

  124. But we're not so much interested

  125. in various church traditions.

  126. We want to hear what the Bible has to say.

  127. Primarily, when we're thinking about the Lord's Supper,

  128. it is a dramatic visual picture

  129. of the Gospel.

  130. The good news that Jesus Christ died for our sins

  131. and that we can be forgiven.

  132. That's why we can call it,

  133. or as I have termed it,

  134. the Grace Meal.

  135. As we gather,

  136. we remember and we participate

  137. in God's grace to us.

  138. It flows from God to us.

  139. And as we gather,

  140. we practice

  141. and we announce God's grace to each other.

  142. So we receive God's grace

  143. and we give God's grace.

  144. The detail of this Grace Meal

  145. is mentioned only five times

  146. in the New Testament.

  147. We read about it three times

  148. in the Gospels,

  149. Matthew, Mark and Luke,

  150. and there's a couple of references,

  151. one of which is here

  152. in Corinthians.

  153. It's a command from the Lord Jesus

  154. as we read in verse 23 of chapter 11.

  155. This is Paul writing, he says,

  156. For I received from the Lord

  157. what I also passed on to you.

  158. So he got it from the Lord,

  159. the Lord Jesus instituted it

  160. and he passes it on to his church,

  161. to his people.

  162. So let's have a look at what this Grace Meal

  163. is all about.

  164. And to do that,

  165. we're going to look at four things

  166. as we share in this meal.

  167. First one,

  168. we remember God's grace.

  169. Second,

  170. we participate in God's grace.

  171. Third,

  172. we practice God's grace.

  173. And fourth,

  174. we announce God's grace.

  175. So we're going to look at those four things

  176. to help us better understand

  177. this simple meal.

  178. First,

  179. we remember God's grace.

  180. Look at verse 24.

  181. When he,

  182. that Jesus,

  183. had given thanks for the bread

  184. and broke it,

  185. he said,

  186. This is my body,

  187. which is for you.

  188. Do this in remembrance

  189. of me.

  190. In the same way,

  191. after supper,

  192. he took the cup saying,

  193. This cup is the new covenant

  194. in my blood.

  195. Do this whenever you drink it

  196. in remembrance

  197. of me.

  198. But what is it

  199. that we are remembering

  200. about Jesus?

  201. Well,

  202. there are two events

  203. that we need to look at.

  204. The first has to do

  205. with the Passover.

  206. Look at verse 23.

  207. He says,

  208. For I received from the Lord

  209. what I also passed

  210. unto you.

  211. The Lord Jesus,

  212. on the night

  213. he was betrayed,

  214. took bread.

  215. But what happened

  216. on that night?

  217. The first time

  218. Jesus celebrated

  219. with his disciples.

  220. Well,

  221. Paul is giving us

  222. a context

  223. to help us

  224. to understand

  225. what we are to remember.

  226. He's bringing to our minds

  227. to think back

  228. to what happened

  229. when Jesus was with

  230. his disciples

  231. on that night.

  232. Let me read to you

  233. what happened

  234. on that night.

  235. It's Matthew 26,

    Matthew 26:17

  236. verse 17.

  237. Just listen to these words.

  238. The disciples said to Jesus,

  239. Where do you want us

  240. to make preparations

  241. for you to eat

  242. the Passover?

  243. Jesus replied,

  244. Go into the city

  245. to a certain man

  246. and tell him,

  247. The teacher says,

  248. My appointed time

  249. is near.

  250. I am going to celebrate

  251. the Passover

  252. with my disciples

  253. at your house.

  254. So the disciples did

  255. as Jesus had directed them

  256. and prepared

  257. the Passover.

  258. Now,

  259. as we read

  260. just a moment ago

  261. in Exodus,

  262. the Passover

  263. was a special

  264. annual meal

  265. to remember

  266. the rescue

  267. of Israel

  268. from their slavery

  269. under Pharaoh

  270. in Egypt.

  271. And because Pharaoh

  272. would not release

  273. Israel,

  274. God's people,

  275. from their slavery,

  276. God had promised

  277. a plague.

  278. He was going to send

  279. the angel of death

  280. who would pass over

  281. every home

  282. in Egypt.

  283. And the eldest son

  284. in each home,

  285. God said,

  286. would die

  287. as a sign

  288. of his judgment

  289. and his justice

  290. because of their sin,

  291. because they would not

  292. let the people go.

  293. But it wasn't just Egypt.

  294. We have to ask the question,

  295. how would Israel,

  296. God's people,

  297. also survive

  298. the angel of death?

  299. Because, well,

  300. let's face it,

  301. they were as messed up

  302. as everybody else.

  303. They weren't pure

  304. and perfect.

  305. So as this angel of death

  306. was going to pass over,

  307. how would they survive?

  308. Well,

  309. they were told by God

  310. to take a lamb,

  311. to kill this lamb,

  312. to eat it.

  313. And then they were

  314. to take some of the blood

  315. from the lamb

  316. and they were to put it

  317. on the door frames

  318. of the house.

  319. And through this very act,

  320. the people were learning

  321. that this little lamb

  322. would die

  323. instead of them.

  324. The lamb that they would

  325. eat together

  326. as a family

  327. was being sacrificed

  328. in their place.

  329. So when the angel of death

  330. passed over

  331. and when he saw

  332. the blood on the door,

  333. he would pass over

  334. that house

  335. and all inside

  336. were kept safe

  337. from God's judgment

  338. and justice.

  339. And as we read

  340. in Exodus,

  341. every year following,

  342. they were to remember

  343. this rescue

  344. with a Passover meal.

  345. Every year,

  346. they were to remember

  347. God's rescue

  348. and liberation

  349. of his people.

  350. That was until Jesus

  351. gave it a new meaning

  352. and a new interpretation.

  353. Because as Jesus

  354. celebrated that Passover meal

  355. with his disciples,

  356. on that occasion,

  357. that very night,

  358. something very significant

  359. happened.

  360. Look at verse 24

  361. of Corinthians 11.

  362. Jesus took some bread.

  363. And when he had

  364. broken it,

  365. when he had

  366. torn that bread

  367. apart,

  368. he gave it to them

  369. and said,

  370. this is my body

  371. broken for you.

  372. This is for you.

  373. And then he took some wine

  374. and he poured it

  375. into a cup

  376. and he said,

  377. this is my blood.

  378. It's for you.

  379. So here we have

  380. a bread,

  381. a torn body.

  382. We have this wine

  383. representing spilt blood.

  384. Jesus is obviously

  385. talking about

  386. a terrible

  387. and a violent death.

  388. Except Jesus

  389. is no longer

  390. talking about

  391. what happened

  392. to the lamb

  393. in the Passover meal.

  394. Jesus is talking

  395. about himself.

  396. You see,

  397. in this text here

  398. in Corinthians 11,

  399. there's no mention

  400. of a lamb.

  401. There's no lamb here.

  402. Why?

  403. Because Jesus

  404. is the true lamb.

  405. What happened

  406. in the Passover meal

  407. was only a sign

  408. of something

  409. far greater.

  410. The lambs

  411. that were broken,

  412. that were torn.

  413. The blood

  414. that was spilt

  415. and that was put

  416. across the door frames

  417. could never

  418. deal with sin

  419. and deal with

  420. God's judgment

  421. and justice.

  422. They pointed forward

  423. to the greater need

  424. for a bigger

  425. and a greater sacrifice,

  426. a perfect one

  427. and a complete one.

  428. So as Jesus

  429. sat with his disciples

  430. to celebrate

  431. this meal,

  432. he was talking

  433. about his death

  434. and the cross

  435. which was just

  436. about to happen.

  437. His body

  438. broken for you.

  439. His blood

  440. spilt for you.

  441. Jesus was saying

  442. to his disciples,

  443. I have come

  444. to die for you.

  445. I have become

  446. the sacrifice

  447. for you.

  448. I am the lamb,

  449. the lamb that was cut

  450. and torn up

  451. and eaten.

  452. I am that lamb

  453. who's come to deal

  454. with the judgment

  455. and the justice

  456. of God

  457. so that you

  458. can be kept safe.

  459. So first,

  460. as we remember

  461. or come to this

  462. simple meal,

  463. it's a simple

  464. remembrance

  465. of God's

  466. amazing grace

  467. demonstrated

  468. as Christ died

  469. on the cross.

  470. And second,

  471. we not only remember

  472. but we participate

  473. in God's grace.

  474. We're not only

  475. to remember

  476. this meal,

  477. we are to get

  478. involved in it.

  479. Look at the words.

  480. He says,

  481. do this,

  482. take this,

  483. eat this bread,

  484. drink this wine.

  485. Flick back to

  486. chapter 10,

  487. verse 16.

  488. chapter 10,

  489. verse 16.

  490. He says,

  491. is not the cup

  492. of thanksgiving

  493. for which we give

  494. thanks a participation

  495. in the blood

  496. of Christ?

  497. And is not the bread

  498. that we break

  499. a participation

  500. in the body

  501. of Christ?

  502. You see,

  503. if we are to

  504. experience

  505. God's grace,

  506. if it's going

  507. to change us

  508. and transform us

  509. from the inside out,

  510. we've got to

  511. participate in this

  512. meal.

  513. We've got to be

  514. involved in it.

  515. Now,

  516. there's two very

  517. different traditions

  518. when it comes to

  519. participating in

  520. this grace meal.

  521. And I'm not

  522. wanting to

  523. pinpoint or

  524. direct things

  525. in any particular

  526. way because

  527. both of what

  528. I'm going to say,

  529. both,

  530. I don't think,

  531. get it right.

  532. So hear me out.

  533. First of all,

  534. the Catholic teaching

  535. takes the literal

  536. view.

  537. It says that

  538. the bread and

  539. wine actually

  540. become the body

  541. and the blood

  542. of Jesus.

  543. So when you

  544. eat the bread

  545. and when you

  546. drink the wine,

  547. you automatically

  548. receive the

  549. saving grace

  550. of God.

  551. In other words,

  552. you can only

  553. get eternal life,

  554. you can only

  555. have forgiveness

  556. of sins

  557. when you

  558. eat and

  559. drink.

  560. Theologians

  561. call it

  562. transubstantiation.

  563. Now,

  564. the problem

  565. with looking

  566. at it like

  567. that is that

  568. the participation

  569. is just simply

  570. physical.

  571. It doesn't

  572. require you

  573. to engage

  574. the heart.

  575. It's just

  576. a physical act,

  577. something you

  578. do that you

  579. don't necessarily

  580. have to understand

  581. or enter into

  582. or be involved

  583. and it's

  584. just there

  585. to cover

  586. over sin

  587. until the

  588. next time.

  589. So,

  590. sin this

  591. week,

  592. take something,

  593. cover over,

  594. and so on

  595. and so on.

  596. There's no

  597. assurance.

  598. In fact,

  599. it goes against

  600. everything Jesus

  601. teaches because

  602. he is saying

  603. that it's not

  604. what you do,

  605. not even what

  606. you eat and

  607. drink,

  608. that brings

  609. salvation.

  610. It's faith

  611. in what Christ

  612. has done

  613. and completed

  614. on your behalf.

  615. So,

  616. that's the

  617. literal view.

  618. Protestant churches

  619. talk about

  620. the symbol

  621. view.

  622. So,

  623. as Jesus

  624. ate the meal

  625. with his

  626. disciples,

  627. he didn't

  628. mean that

  629. the bread

  630. and wine

  631. actually became

  632. his body

  633. and blood.

  634. No,

  635. it was a

  636. symbol,

  637. a sign

  638. of his

  639. death

  640. to come.

  641. The bread

  642. and the

  643. wine

  644. represent

  645. Jesus.

  646. We look

  647. beyond them

  648. to what

  649. Jesus had

  650. done.

  651. So,

  652. when we

  653. see the

  654. bread being

  655. broken,

  656. when the

  657. wine is

  658. being poured,

  659. it's a

  660. visual picture

  661. of the

  662. gospel,

  663. the good

  664. news that

  665. Christ died

  666. for us.

  667. Now,

  668. I think

  669. that's

  670. beginning to

  671. get to

  672. a right

  673. interpretation.

  674. We do

  675. treat the

  676. bread and

  677. the wine

  678. as symbols.

  679. But there's

  680. also a

  681. problem with

  682. that view.

  683. The

  684. emphasis

  685. that the

  686. bread and

  687. the wine

  688. are just

  689. symbols

  690. and that

  691. they can

  692. never

  693. change

  694. you

  695. seems to

  696. go against

  697. what Jesus

  698. is teaching.

  699. In other

  700. words,

  701. we can go

  702. so far to

  703. try and

  704. correct a

  705. literal view

  706. that we

  707. lose something

  708. of its

  709. actual effect

  710. and our

  711. involvement

  712. and our

  713. participation.

  714. So,

  715. how do we

  716. participate

  717. in this

  718. grace meal?

  719. How can

  720. we

  721. experience

  722. God's

  723. grace?

  724. Well,

  725. look at

  726. those

  727. words in

  728. chapter 10

  729. verse 16

  730. again.

  731. Is not

  732. the cup

  733. of

  734. thanksgiving

  735. for which

  736. we give

  737. thanks

  738. a

  739. participation

  740. in the

  741. blood of

  742. Christ?

  743. And is

  744. not the

  745. bread that

  746. we break

  747. a

  748. participation

  749. in the

  750. body of

  751. Christ?

  752. You see,

  753. as we

  754. eat the

  755. bread,

  756. as we

  757. drink the

  758. wine,

  759. by faith,

  760. we are

  761. participating

  762. in Jesus'

  763. sacrifice

  764. for us.

  765. The very

  766. physical act

  767. of taking

  768. something in

  769. your hand,

  770. of holding

  771. the bread

  772. in your

  773. hand,

  774. of drinking

  775. the wine,

  776. reflects our

  777. absolute

  778. dependence

  779. upon the

  780. sacrifice of

  781. Jesus.

  782. As I eat

  783. the bread,

  784. I am

  785. saying,

  786. Jesus had

  787. to be

  788. broken for

  789. me.

  790. As I

  791. drink the

  792. wine,

  793. I am

  794. saying,

  795. Jesus had

  796. to be

  797. slain for

  798. me.

  799. That if

  800. he didn't

  801. do it,

  802. I'm

  803. lost,

  804. I'm

  805. nothing,

  806. I need

  807. God's

  808. grace,

  809. and I

  810. need to

  811. take it

  812. into my

  813. life.

  814. But more

  815. than that,

  816. we are to

  817. take the

  818. grace of

  819. God by

  820. faith,

  821. so that

  822. it becomes

  823. part of

  824. us.

  825. And I

  826. think this

  827. is what

  828. Jesus wants

  829. us to

  830. grasp when

  831. he says,

  832. take and

  833. eat,

  834. this is

  835. my body,

  836. this is

  837. my blood,

  838. drink from

  839. it,

  840. all of

  841. you.

  842. John

  843. Stott,

  844. an Anglican

  845. minister,

  846. he's now

  847. in heaven,

  848. he wrote

  849. and he put

  850. it like

  851. this,

  852. our faith

  853. looks beyond

  854. the symbols

  855. to the

  856. reality

  857. they

  858. represent.

  859. bread and

  860. even as

  861. we take

  862. the bread

  863. and wine

  864. and feed

  865. on them

  866. in our

  867. mouths by

  868. eating and

  869. drinking,

  870. so we

  871. feed on

  872. Christ

  873. crucified

  874. in our

  875. hearts

  876. by faith.

  877. we must

  878. eat and

  879. drink,

  880. we must

  881. as it

  882. were

  883. take in

  884. by faith

  885. the grace

  886. of God,

  887. we must

  888. realise that

  889. we are so

  890. needy people

  891. that without

  892. God's grace

  893. we are

  894. nothing.

  895. And so our

  896. participation

  897. isn't just

  898. thinking,

  899. oh well these

  900. are just

  901. symbols and

  902. they're never

  903. going to

  904. change me

  905. or do

  906. anything to

  907. me and

  908. you know

  909. it's just

  910. as much as

  911. reading the

  912. Bible and

  913. going to

  914. church is

  915. never going

  916. to save

  917. me, so

  918. doing this

  919. is never

  920. going to

  921. save me.

  922. Yeah that's

  923. right, but

  924. we are to

  925. engage, we

  926. are to be

  927. involved and

  928. see that in

  929. eating and

  930. drinking we

  931. are by

  932. faith taking

  933. in God's

  934. grace to

  935. transform us

  936. and to

  937. change us.

  938. So we

  939. must participate

  940. in God's

  941. grace.

  942. Third, we

  943. must practice

  944. God's grace.

  945. This grace

  946. meal is

  947. something we

  948. don't just

  949. do alone,

  950. we participate

  951. together, that's

  952. why we're all

  953. here.

  954. We don't just

  955. have our little

  956. individual meals

  957. at home.

  958. But you

  959. know what,

  960. there was a

  961. problem whenever

  962. this church in

  963. Corinthians were

  964. meeting and I

  965. don't think it's

  966. unlike most

  967. churches.

  968. Look at

  969. verse 18 of

  970. chapter 11.

  971. He says,

  972. in the first

  973. place I hear

  974. that when you

  975. come together

  976. as a church

  977. there are

  978. divisions among

  979. you and to

  980. some extent I

  981. can believe it

  982. because, well,

  983. you know, we're

  984. people and people

  985. make mistakes.

  986. Verse 20.

  987. When you come

  988. together it is

  989. not the Lord's

  990. supper you eat.

  991. For as you

  992. eat each of you

  993. goes ahead without

  994. waiting for anybody

  995. else.

  996. One remains

  997. hungry and

  998. another one

  999. gets drunk.

  1000. pretty mad,

  1001. eh?

  1002. You see,

  1003. unlike our

  1004. church practice,

  1005. the early

  1006. church would

  1007. have met for

  1008. a meal

  1009. beforehand.

  1010. And then they

  1011. would have

  1012. shared in the

  1013. Lord's supper.

  1014. It was a

  1015. little bit like

  1016. a potluck

  1017. lunch.

  1018. Everybody

  1019. brought their

  1020. own bit of

  1021. food and,

  1022. well, they

  1023. were all meant

  1024. to share it

  1025. and be together

  1026. in it.

  1027. But what they

  1028. were doing was

  1029. they were all

  1030. doing their

  1031. own thing.

  1032. Some were

  1033. just plain

  1034. greedy and

  1035. they had

  1036. lots of

  1037. money and

  1038. had nice

  1039. food and,

  1040. well, they

  1041. could just

  1042. eat away.

  1043. And there

  1044. were poor

  1045. people there

  1046. who didn't

  1047. have money and

  1048. maybe the

  1049. only actual

  1050. meal they

  1051. were going

  1052. to have was

  1053. the bread

  1054. and the

  1055. wine that

  1056. was there

  1057. for the

  1058. Lord's

  1059. supper.

  1060. And others

  1061. were just

  1062. too busy

  1063. getting drunk

  1064. on the

  1065. wine that

  1066. they bought

  1067. to notice

  1068. the needs

  1069. of anybody

  1070. else.

  1071. There was

  1072. chaos.

  1073. And Paul

  1074. was furious.

  1075. Verse 22.

  1076. He says,

  1077. don't you

  1078. have homes

  1079. to eat

  1080. in and

  1081. drink in?

  1082. Or do you

  1083. despise the

  1084. church of

  1085. God and

  1086. humiliate those

  1087. who have

  1088. nothing?

  1089. What shall I

  1090. say to you?

  1091. Am I going

  1092. to praise you

  1093. for this?

  1094. Well done,

  1095. you're behaving

  1096. very well.

  1097. Absolutely not.

  1098. It's a

  1099. disgrace.

  1100. Now, I

  1101. don't think we

  1102. have to be

  1103. too hard on

  1104. these guys.

  1105. Well, we

  1106. have to be

  1107. hard on

  1108. them because,

  1109. well, they

  1110. weren't doing

  1111. what's right.

  1112. But I

  1113. don't think

  1114. we're any

  1115. different to

  1116. some extent.

  1117. not saying

  1118. that we're

  1119. all turning

  1120. up drunk

  1121. or anything

  1122. else like

  1123. that, but

  1124. we're all

  1125. messy people,

  1126. aren't we?

  1127. And we

  1128. fail to

  1129. understand the

  1130. workings out

  1131. of God's

  1132. grace.

  1133. And instead

  1134. of joining

  1135. together as a

  1136. family, and

  1137. he's at these

  1138. people here,

  1139. they were all

  1140. huddling into

  1141. cliques.

  1142. The rich were

  1143. with the rich

  1144. and the poor

  1145. with the poor

  1146. and the insiders

  1147. were separated

  1148. from the

  1149. outsiders, and

  1150. well, all the

  1151. good people who

  1152. read their

  1153. Bible and

  1154. went to

  1155. church and

  1156. went to

  1157. prayer meetings,

  1158. they all

  1159. huddled together,

  1160. and then all

  1161. the bad people

  1162. who kept

  1163. messing up and

  1164. failing, well,

  1165. they were all

  1166. over here.

  1167. It was quite

  1168. ironic that the

  1169. meal that was

  1170. supposed to

  1171. unite the

  1172. family of God

  1173. was becoming

  1174. a meal of

  1175. division.

  1176. And in

  1177. response, Paul

  1178. directs them

  1179. back to the

  1180. grace meal.

  1181. We are to

  1182. remember God's

  1183. grace.

  1184. We are to

  1185. participate in

  1186. God's grace

  1187. so that we

  1188. can practice

  1189. God's grace

  1190. to each

  1191. other.

  1192. You see, the

  1193. grace meal is

  1194. a great

  1195. leveller, isn't

  1196. it?

  1197. It brings us

  1198. all into line.

  1199. We all think,

  1200. well, I'm here

  1201. and they're

  1202. there.

  1203. Well, actually,

  1204. no.

  1205. Regardless of

  1206. our class or

  1207. our culture,

  1208. our religious

  1209. background or

  1210. our heritage,

  1211. we are all

  1212. brought into

  1213. line equally.

  1214. The reality

  1215. is none of

  1216. us deserve

  1217. God's grace.

  1218. We're all in

  1219. desperate need

  1220. of God's

  1221. grace.

  1222. We're all

  1223. outsiders, but

  1224. we have become

  1225. insiders through

  1226. the sacrificial

  1227. death of

  1228. Christ.

  1229. So when we

  1230. gather together,

  1231. we are reminding

  1232. ourselves through

  1233. the grace meal

  1234. that there's no

  1235. room for

  1236. superiority, nobody

  1237. can think of

  1238. themselves better,

  1239. and there's no

  1240. room for

  1241. inferiority to

  1242. think that I'm

  1243. no good.

  1244. By remembering

  1245. and participating

  1246. in this grace

  1247. meal, we

  1248. accept one

  1249. another, we

  1250. welcome one

  1251. another, just

  1252. as Christ

  1253. accepted and

  1254. welcomed us.

  1255. So third, we

  1256. are practicing

  1257. grace as we

  1258. meet together.

  1259. Fourth, we're

  1260. announcing God's

  1261. grace.

  1262. Because this

  1263. grace meal is

  1264. not just to be

  1265. kept for

  1266. ourselves.

  1267. It is to be

  1268. announced, to

  1269. be proclaimed.

  1270. Look at how

  1271. this meal

  1272. finished in

  1273. this passage,

  1274. verse 26.

  1275. For whenever

  1276. you eat this

  1277. bread and

  1278. drink this

  1279. cup, you

  1280. proclaim, you

  1281. announce the

  1282. Lord's death.

  1283. You talk about

  1284. his grace

  1285. grace until

  1286. he comes

  1287. again.

  1288. At one level,

  1289. this meal is

  1290. exclusive.

  1291. It is for all

  1292. those who

  1293. come to

  1294. Jesus by

  1295. faith to

  1296. receive and

  1297. experience God's

  1298. grace.

  1299. But in

  1300. another way,

  1301. this meal is

  1302. open.

  1303. There's an

  1304. inclusiveness to

  1305. this meal.

  1306. There is this

  1307. open invitation

  1308. to all

  1309. those who

  1310. see their

  1311. need of

  1312. grace to

  1313. participate in

  1314. it.

  1315. The grace

  1316. that we have

  1317. received from

  1318. God is not

  1319. private.

  1320. It is to be

  1321. proclaimed.

  1322. It's to be

  1323. announced.

  1324. Jesus came for

  1325. sinners and I

  1326. reckon that we're

  1327. not the only

  1328. sinners.

  1329. As we're

  1330. reminded in

  1331. this text in

  1332. verse 23,

  1333. that it all

  1334. happened on the

  1335. night, Jesus

  1336. was betrayed.

  1337. Remember

  1338. Judas, the

  1339. one who turned

  1340. his back on

  1341. Jesus, the

  1342. betrayer, the

  1343. failure, the

  1344. sinner, was

  1345. present at

  1346. that meal.

  1347. And grace

  1348. was offered

  1349. to him.

  1350. He rejected

  1351. it, but it

  1352. was offered.

  1353. And in the

  1354. same way, we

  1355. are to announce

  1356. God's grace to

  1357. all who

  1358. will come in

  1359. faith to

  1360. receive and

  1361. experience God's

  1362. amazing grace.

  1363. So four things

  1364. that help us to

  1365. grasp and

  1366. understand a

  1367. little bit more

  1368. what we're going

  1369. to celebrate, and

  1370. we're going to do

  1371. that in just a

  1372. minute.

  1373. We remember

  1374. his grace as we

  1375. look back to the

  1376. cross.

  1377. We participate

  1378. in that grace as

  1379. we involve

  1380. ourselves by

  1381. faith.

  1382. And we

  1383. practice grace to

  1384. one another,

  1385. welcoming each

  1386. other as Christ

  1387. welcomed us, and

  1388. we announce that

  1389. grace, saying that

  1390. God's grace is

  1391. available to all

  1392. who will come

  1393. in faith.

  1394. we're going to

  1395. sing Behold

  1396. the Lamb, which

  1397. is a song that

  1398. really takes us

  1399. through the

  1400. whole story of

  1401. the grace meal.

  1402. We're going to

  1403. sing it all the

  1404. way through, and

  1405. then we're going

  1406. to share in that

  1407. simple meal together.

  1408. But just use these

  1409. words to reflect,

  1410. to meditate, and

  1411. also to give

  1412. thanks to the

  1413. Lord Jesus for

  1414. what he has

  1415. done.

  1416. We'll stand

  1417. together as we

  1418. sing this.

  1419. Behold the Lamb

  1420. who bears our

  1421. sins away,

  1422. slain for us.

  1423. And we

  1424. remember the

  1425. promise made

  1426. that all who

  1427. come in

  1428. faith find

  1429. forgiveness

  1430. the cross.

  1431. So we

  1432. share

  1433. in this

  1434. bread of

  1435. life, and

  1436. we drink

  1437. of his

  1438. sacrifice

  1439. at the

  1440. time

  1441. of our

  1442. palms of

  1443. peace.

  1444. Around the

  1445. table of

  1446. peace.

  1447. The body

  1448. of our

  1449. Savior,

  1450. Jesus Christ,

  1451. torn for

  1452. you.

  1453. Read and

  1454. remember

  1455. the wounds

  1456. that heal,

  1457. the death

  1458. that brings

  1459. us life,

  1460. save the

  1461. pride to

  1462. make us

  1463. one.

  1464. so we

  1465. share

  1466. in this

  1467. bread of

  1468. life,

  1469. and we

  1470. drink

  1471. of his

  1472. sacrifice

  1473. at the

  1474. side

  1475. of our

  1476. bones of

  1477. love.

  1478. Around the

  1479. table of

  1480. the

  1481. king,

  1482. the

  1483. blood that

  1484. cleanses

  1485. every stain

  1486. of sin

  1487. shed for

  1488. you.

  1489. Drink and

  1490. remember

  1491. he

  1492. drained

  1493. death

  1494. cup that

  1495. only enter

  1496. in to

  1497. receive

  1498. the

  1499. life

  1500. of

  1501. God.

  1502. so we

  1503. share

  1504. in the

  1505. bread of

  1506. life,

  1507. and we

  1508. drink

  1509. of

  1510. his

  1511. sacrifice

  1512. at the

  1513. side

  1514. of our

  1515. bones of

  1516. grace.

  1517. Around the

  1518. table of

  1519. the

  1520. king,

  1521. and so

  1522. with

  1523. thankfulness

  1524. and faith

  1525. we

  1526. rise to

  1527. respond,

  1528. and to

  1529. remember

  1530. our call

  1531. to follow

  1532. in the

  1533. steps of

  1534. Christ,

  1535. as his

  1536. body

  1537. here

  1538. on

  1539. earth.

  1540. As we

  1541. share

  1542. in

  1543. his

  1544. suffering

  1545. we

  1546. proclaim

  1547. Christ

  1548. will

  1549. come

  1550. again

  1551. and

  1552. we'll

  1553. join

  1554. in

  1555. the

  1556. feast

  1557. of

  1558. heaven

  1559. around

  1560. the

  1561. table

  1562. of

  1563. the

  1564. king.

  1565. Please

  1566. do take

  1567. a seat.

  1568. So as

  1569. we gather

  1570. to share

  1571. in this

  1572. grace

  1573. meal,

  1574. we want

  1575. to come

  1576. and we

  1577. need to

  1578. involve

  1579. all of

  1580. who we

  1581. are.

  1582. We need

  1583. to bring,

  1584. if you like,

  1585. our senses

  1586. to this

  1587. meal.

  1588. We need

  1589. to use

  1590. our eyes,

  1591. we need

  1592. to use

  1593. our ears,

  1594. and our

  1595. mouth as

  1596. we taste,

  1597. as we

  1598. celebrate

  1599. in this

  1600. grace

  1601. meal

  1602. together.

  1603. prayer.

  1604. We need

  1605. to use

  1606. our

  1607. life

  1608. as we

  1609. visualize.

  1610. We

  1611. think of

  1612. the cross

  1613. of Christ.

  1614. We

  1615. think of

  1616. Jesus

  1617. holding

  1618. the

  1619. bread,

  1620. speaking of

  1621. his

  1622. day.

  1623. His body

  1624. broken,

  1625. torn for

  1626. us,

  1627. ripped

  1628. for us,

  1629. broken

  1630. for us,

  1631. we visualize

  1632. and we

  1633. remember

  1634. Christ.

  1635. And when

  1636. he comes

  1637. to

  1638. the cross

  1639. to the

  1640. light,

  1641. we visualize

  1642. and we

  1643. remember

  1644. himself.

  1645. His blood

  1646. shed,

  1647. slain

  1648. for us,

  1649. dying

  1650. for us.

  1651. a visual

  1652. picture,

  1653. a reminder

  1654. of a

  1655. broken

  1656. body,

  1657. blood

  1658. in the

  1659. sense,

  1660. the

  1661. true

  1662. man

  1663. sacrifice

  1664. for us.

  1665. So we

  1666. use our

  1667. eyes as

  1668. we

  1669. visualize,

  1670. but we

  1671. use our

  1672. ears to

  1673. listen,

  1674. listen to

  1675. this from

  1676. God's

  1677. words,

  1678. for his

  1679. words give

  1680. interpretation

  1681. and meaning

  1682. to the

  1683. bread and

  1684. to the

  1685. wine.

  1686. I tell

  1687. you the

  1688. truth,

  1689. Jesus

  1690. says,

  1691. he who

  1692. believes,

  1693. who has

  1694. faith,

  1695. has

  1696. everlasting

  1697. life.

  1698. Jesus

  1699. said to

  1700. them,

  1701. I tell

  1702. you the

  1703. truth,

  1704. unless you

  1705. can eat

  1706. the flesh

  1707. of the

  1708. Son of

  1709. Man and

  1710. drink his

  1711. blood,

  1712. you have

  1713. no life

  1714. in you.

  1715. Whoever

  1716. eats my

  1717. flesh and

  1718. drinks my

  1719. blood has

  1720. eternal life

  1721. and I will

  1722. raise them

  1723. up at the

  1724. last day,

  1725. for my

  1726. flesh is

  1727. real food

  1728. and my

  1729. blood is

  1730. real drink.

  1731. Whoever

  1732. eats my

  1733. flesh and

  1734. drinks my

  1735. blood,

  1736. remains in

  1737. me and

  1738. I in

  1739. him.

  1740. Just as

  1741. the living

  1742. Father sent

  1743. me and

  1744. I live

  1745. because of

  1746. the Father,

  1747. so the

  1748. one who

  1749. feeds on

  1750. me will

  1751. live because

  1752. of me.

  1753. So we

  1754. use our

  1755. eyes to

  1756. visualize,

  1757. our ears

  1758. to listen,

  1759. and in a

  1760. moment we're

  1761. going to use

  1762. our mouths as

  1763. we taste

  1764. and eat

  1765. and drink

  1766. and by

  1767. faith we

  1768. receive and

  1769. experience the

  1770. grace of

  1771. God.

  1772. Before we do

  1773. that we're

  1774. going to read

  1775. together a

  1776. portion of

  1777. a psalm,

  1778. Psalm 32.

  1779. If you turn to

  1780. that's Psalm 32,

  1781. that's Psalm 32.

  1782. We come without

  1783. any masks,

  1784. we come without

  1785. any sense of

  1786. pretense,

  1787. we may hide

  1788. our sin,

  1789. our secret

  1790. sin from

  1791. one another,

  1792. but the

  1793. Lord knows

  1794. us and

  1795. he invites

  1796. us to

  1797. come as

  1798. we are

  1799. with all

  1800. of our

  1801. sin and

  1802. all of

  1803. our mess

  1804. and our

  1805. failures

  1806. to receive

  1807. his

  1808. forgiveness

  1809. because

  1810. he took

  1811. our sin

  1812. on himself

  1813. and died

  1814. in our

  1815. place.

  1816. So let's

  1817. read this

  1818. as a

  1819. means of

  1820. our

  1821. confession

  1822. and

  1823. reminding

  1824. us

  1825. of the

  1826. grace of

  1827. forgiveness.

  1828. Let's

  1829. read Psalm

    Psalms 32:1–5

  1830. 32 verses

  1831. 1 to

  1832. 5

  1833. together.

  1834. Blessed

  1835. is he

  1836. whose

  1837. transgressions

  1838. are forgiven,

  1839. whose

  1840. sins are

  1841. covered.

  1842. Blessed

  1843. is the

  1844. man whose

  1845. sin the

  1846. Lord does

  1847. not count

  1848. against

  1849. him and

  1850. in whose

  1851. spirit is

  1852. no deceit.

  1853. When I

  1854. kept silent,

  1855. my bones

  1856. wasted away

  1857. through my

  1858. groaning all

  1859. day long.

  1860. For day

  1861. and night

  1862. your hand

  1863. was heavy

  1864. upon me,

  1865. my strength

  1866. was sacked

  1867. as in the

  1868. heat of

  1869. summer.

  1870. Then I

  1871. acknowledged

  1872. my sin

  1873. to you

  1874. and did

  1875. not cover

  1876. up my

  1877. iniquity.

  1878. I said,

  1879. I will

  1880. confess my

  1881. transgressions

  1882. to the

  1883. Lord,

  1884. and you

  1885. forgave the

  1886. guilt of

  1887. my sin.

  1888. God's

  1889. will

  1890. pass the

  1891. bread

  1892. around

  1893. and you

  1894. will

  1895. taste,

  1896. you

  1897. will

  1898. visualize

  1899. and you

  1900. will hear

  1901. those words

  1902. we have

  1903. just read.

  1904. Hold on

  1905. to that

  1906. piece of

  1907. bread and

  1908. then we

  1909. will eat

  1910. together

  1911. because we

  1912. participate

  1913. together

  1914. and we

  1915. practice

  1916. grace

  1917. together

  1918. as God's

  1919. family.

  1920. so please

  1921. take the

  1922. piece of

  1923. bread,

  1924. hold on

  1925. to it

  1926. and then

  1927. we will

  1928. eat

  1929. together.

  1930. As we

  1931. visualize

  1932. and we

  1933. remember

  1934. Christ's

  1935. body

  1936. torn,

  1937. broken

  1938. for us,

  1939. taking

  1940. our sin

  1941. upon

  1942. himself,

  1943. by faith

  1944. we

  1945. participate

  1946. to

  1947. experience

  1948. and receive

  1949. his grace.

  1950. Let us

  1951. taste and

  1952. eat

  1953. and remember

  1954. let's

  1955. eat

  1956. together.

  1957. Let us

  1958. eat

  1959. together.

  1960. he made

  1961. known his

  1962. ways to

  1963. Moses,

  1964. his deeds

  1965. to the

  1966. people of

  1967. Israel.

  1968. The

  1969. Lord is

  1970. compassionate

  1971. and gracious,

  1972. slow to

  1973. anger,

  1974. abounding

  1975. in love.

  1976. He will

  1977. not always

  1978. accuse,

  1979. nor will

  1980. he harbor

  1981. his anger

  1982. forever.

  1983. He does

  1984. not treat

  1985. us as our

  1986. sins deserve

  1987. or repay

  1988. us according

  1989. to our

  1990. iniquities.

  1991. for as

  1992. high as

  1993. the heavens

  1994. are above

  1995. the earth,

  1996. so great

  1997. is his

  1998. love for

  1999. those who

  2000. fear him.

  2001. As far

  2002. as the

  2003. east is

  2004. from the

  2005. west,

  2006. so far

  2007. has he

  2008. removed

  2009. our

  2010. transgressions

  2011. from us.

  2012. we're

  2013. going to

  2014. sing

  2015. together.

  2016. Only by

  2017. grace can

  2018. we enter

  2019. because it

  2020. is only

  2021. because of

  2022. the grace

  2023. of God

  2024. it picks

  2025. up something

  2026. of that

  2027. theme that

  2028. we were

  2029. looking at.

  2030. It's not

  2031. by our

  2032. human

  2033. endeavor,

  2034. nothing that

  2035. we do,

  2036. but by

  2037. the blood

  2038. of the

  2039. Lamb,

  2040. but by

  2041. Jesus

  2042. Christ.

  2043. we'll

  2044. remain

  2045. seated

  2046. as we

  2047. sing this

  2048. through a

  2049. couple of

  2050. times.

  2051. verse.

  2052. Only by

  2053. grace can

  2054. we enter,

  2055. only by

  2056. grace can

  2057. we stand,

  2058. not by

  2059. a human

  2060. endeavor,

  2061. but by

  2062. the blood

  2063. of the

  2064. Lamb.

  2065. Into

  2066. your presence

  2067. you call,

  2068. we call

  2069. us to

  2070. come.

  2071. Into

  2072. your presence

  2073. you jolt,

  2074. and now

  2075. by your

  2076. grace we

  2077. come.

  2078. Now by

  2079. your grace

  2080. we come.

  2081. Lord,

  2082. if you

  2083. mark our

  2084. transgressions,

  2085. who would

  2086. die?

  2087. Thanks to

  2088. your grace

  2089. we are

  2090. cleansed by

  2091. the blood

  2092. of the

  2093. Lamb.

  2094. Lord,

  2095. if you

  2096. mark our

  2097. transgressions,

  2098. who would

  2099. die?

  2100. Thanks to

  2101. your grace

  2102. we are

  2103. cleansed by

  2104. the blood

  2105. of the

  2106. Lamb.

  2107. The blood

  2108. of the Lamb.

  2109. Only by

  2110. grace can

  2111. be

  2112. enter,

  2113. only by

  2114. grace can

  2115. be

  2116. stand,

  2117. not by

  2118. our

  2119. human

  2120. endeavor,

  2121. but by

  2122. the blood

  2123. of the

  2124. Lamb.

  2125. Into

  2126. your

  2127. presence

  2128. you

  2129. call,

  2130. you

  2131. call us

  2132. to

  2133. come.

  2134. Into

  2135. your

  2136. presence

  2137. you

  2138. draw.

  2139. Now by

  2140. your grace

  2141. we come.

  2142. Now by

  2143. your grace

  2144. we come.

  2145. Now by

  2146. your grace

  2147. we come.

  2148. we

  2149. continue to

  2150. visualize

  2151. as we

  2152. look at

  2153. the wine

  2154. we remember

  2155. Christ's

  2156. sacrifice

  2157. on the

  2158. cross.

  2159. his

  2160. blood

  2161. our

  2162. faith

  2163. in

  2164. his

  2165. death

  2166. for

  2167. us

  2168. that

  2169. rescues

  2170. us

  2171. and

  2172. forgives

  2173. us.

  2174. As

  2175. this

  2176. is

  2177. being

  2178. passed

  2179. around

  2180. drink

  2181. as

  2182. you

  2183. receive

  2184. but

  2185. let's

  2186. use

  2187. this

  2188. as

  2189. an

  2190. open

  2191. time

  2192. to

  2193. give

  2194. thanks

  2195. and

  2196. to

  2197. praise.

  2198. We

  2199. have

  2200. had

  2201. our

  2202. personal

  2203. reflection

  2204. and

  2205. repentance

  2206. but

  2207. now

  2208. we

  2209. celebrate

  2210. his

  2211. forgiveness

  2212. we

  2213. celebrate

  2214. that

  2215. new

  2216. life.

  2217. So

  2218. let's

  2219. take

  2220. this

  2221. time

  2222. as

  2223. it's

  2224. being

  2225. passed

  2226. around

  2227. to

  2228. pray

  2229. if

  2230. you

  2231. want

  2232. to

  2233. pray

  2234. out

  2235. loud

  2236. or

  2237. read

  2238. something

  2239. of

  2240. prayer

  2241. or

  2242. of

  2243. praise

  2244. to

  2245. do

  2246. that

  2247. as

  2248. we

  2249. gather

  2250. together.
