  1. Reading Matthew chapter 27 verses 45 to 54 which is on page 999 of the Church Bibles.

    Matthew 27:45–54

  2. Page 999 of the Church Bibles, Matthew 27.

  3. Starting from verse 45.

  4. From the sixth hour until the ninth hour, darkness came over all the land.

  5. About the ninth hour, Jesus cried out in a loud voice,

  6. Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani, which means, my God, my God, why have you forsaken me?

  7. When some of those standing there heard this, they said, he's calling Elijah.

  8. Immediately one of them ran and got a sponge.

  9. He filled it with wine vinegar, put it on a stick and offered it to Jesus to drink.

  10. The rest said, now leave him alone.

  11. Let's see if Elijah comes to save him.

  12. And when Jesus has cried out again in a loud voice, he gave up his spirit.

  13. At that moment, the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom.

  14. The earth shook and the rocks split.

  15. The tombs broke open and the bodies of many holy people who had died were raised to life.

  16. They came out of the tombs.

  17. And after Jesus' resurrection, they went into the holy city and appeared to many people.

  18. When the centurion and those with him who were guarding Jesus saw the earthquake and all that had happened,

  19. they were terrified and exclaimed, surely he was the Son of God.

  20. For the second reading, we'll be looking at Hebrews chapter 10.

    Hebrews 10 chapter mention

  21. I don't know if Johnny has the page in the church Bible.

  22. On page 1208.

  23. Hebrews chapter 10.

    Hebrews 10 chapter mention

  24. Starting in verse 19.

  25. I'll read 19 to 25.

  26. Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the most holy place by the blood of Jesus,

  27. by a new and living way open for us through the curtain that is his body,

  28. and since we have a great priest over the house of God,

  29. let us draw near to God with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith,

  30. having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience

  31. and having our bodies washed with pure water.

  32. Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess,

  33. for he who promised is faithful.

  34. And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds.

  35. Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing,

  36. but let us encourage one another, and all the more, as you see the day approaching.

  37. Thanks very much.

  38. Well, let's pray and ask for God's help.

  39. Our Father God, we thank you for the church family.

  40. Thank you that we can meet and gather together.

  41. Thank you for the provision of this building.

  42. Thank you for the gifts of all the people here

  43. who serve in so many different ways to make this gathering possible.

  44. Thank you for all.

  45. Thank you for all that we've been able to do together so far,

  46. for being able to sing,

  47. to read, to pray,

  48. to talk over tea and coffee.

  49. Thank you, Father,

  50. thank you, Father,

  51. that we can meet in this way in freedom,

  52. without fear of authorities,

  53. without persecution.

  54. And we ask that you would help us to better understand what it means for us

  55. to meet together and to gather as your people.

  56. Teach us then, through your word we pray.

  57. In Jesus' name.

  58. Amen.

  59. Amen.

  60. So, meeting with God's people or gathering as a family,

  61. I want us to start with a question.

  62. And it's simply this.

  63. Why bother with church?

  64. Why did any of us bother to get up this morning to come and meet?

  65. Why did we do that?

  66. Is it really worth all the effort?

  67. Rushing around, trying to get the kids sorted,

  68. in and out of the showers,

  69. getting the lunch organised before you leave?

  70. Or is that just our house?

  71. Why bother?

  72. Why don't we just stay at home?

  73. After all, it is a lot warmer,

  74. and so much more comfortable,

  75. to be in our own living rooms.

  76. We could just stay at home and listen to the sermon online,

  77. in our own time,

  78. or you could choose whoever you wanted to listen to,

  79. online.

  80. What's the point of gathering together like this?

  81. Well, to be a Christian person,

  82. is to be a church person.

  83. Because the Bible's view is this.

  84. If you are committed to Christ,

  85. you are also committed to church.

  86. You can't have one without the other.

  87. It's two sides of the one coin.

  88. You are committed to Christ,

  89. and you are committed to church.

  90. You can't separate them.

  91. In fact, if we are to experience Christ in our life,

  92. the Bible says we must participate in church life.

  93. Because the way in which the Gospel,

  94. the good news about Jesus,

  95. gets worked into our hearts,

  96. and the way it gets worked out through our lives,

  97. is in our involvement and participation

  98. with and in the church family.

  99. The church family,

  100. the gathering of God's people,

  101. is God's means of enabling us

  102. to experience the full effects of the Gospel.

  103. So why bother with church?

  104. Why bother getting up and coming together?

  105. Well, without the church family,

  106. we are never going to grow,

  107. we are never going to change as people,

  108. and we're never going to know Christ

  109. in all his fullness

  110. and all that he has to give us.

  111. Because it is through the church family

  112. that he works

  113. so that we experience the full effects

  114. of the Gospel.

  115. So it's essential that we are gathering together.

  116. But let's try and unpack this a little bit more

  117. and get the connection between Christ on the one hand

  118. and church on the other

  119. and see how they are integral

  120. and fit together.

  121. First of all, our faith in Christ.

  122. Look at verse 19 of our reading from Hebrews 10.

  123. Therefore, brothers and sisters,

  124. since we have confidence

  125. to enter the most holy place

  126. by the blood of Jesus.

  127. Now, verse 19 is almost a summary

  128. of all of chapters 1 to 9.

  129. In chapters 1 to 9,

  130. it goes into great detail,

  131. looking back through the Old Testament,

  132. to show us that without Christ,

  133. without his sacrifice,

  134. we can't come to God.

  135. In the past,

  136. people couldn't get close to God.

  137. But now, again, look at verse 19.

  138. Since we have confidence

  139. to enter the most holy place

  140. by the blood of Jesus,

  141. by a new and living way

  142. opened up for us through the curtain,

  143. that is his body.

  144. And we've got all this religious language

  145. through here.

  146. We've got this most holy place,

  147. the blood of Jesus,

  148. and the curtain.

  149. Strange language.

  150. But it's taking us back

  151. to a miraculous event

  152. of when Christ died on the cross.

  153. we read about it

  154. from Matthew's Gospel.

  155. The most holy place

  156. was a room in the temple

  157. which marked or symbolised

  158. the presence of God.

  159. And blocking the way,

  160. the entrance into that room,

  161. was this large curtain.

  162. It acted as a barrier,

  163. an enormous signpost

  164. that was telling everybody,

  165. stop, no entry.

  166. It's a little bit like

  167. this room here.

  168. If you could imagine

  169. that we here are the people,

  170. and in behind that screen

  171. is the most holy place

  172. which symbolised

  173. where God's presence was,

  174. where God dwelt.

  175. And the screen here

  176. is an enormous curtain

  177. except for it would have gone

  178. from top to bottom.

  179. And it was this great big sign

  180. that meant we couldn't enter,

  181. we couldn't get to God.

  182. God was making it clear

  183. that our sin means

  184. we can't enjoy God

  185. as we are meant to.

  186. We've been shut out.

  187. We're here.

  188. God is there.

  189. Denied accent.

  190. Barred from coming to God.

  191. Just like Adam and Eve

  192. were shut out of the garden

  193. and it was barred from re-entry.

  194. And it has been ever since.

  195. But something has happened,

  196. verse 20.

  197. A new and living way

  198. has opened up for us

  199. through the curtain.

  200. That is his body.

  201. You see, the moment

  202. that Jesus died on the cross,

  203. and you'll remember that

  204. from the reading in Matthew,

  205. the moment Jesus died,

  206. the curtain in the most holy place

  207. was torn from top to bottom,

  208. ripped open.

  209. It was a divine intervention by God.

  210. The barrier that stood in the way

  211. was removed.

  212. And access to God

  213. was now possible.

  214. Entrance into the family of God

  215. was now open

  216. to everybody

  217. who had faith in Jesus.

  218. Because Jesus,

  219. through his death on the cross,

  220. was taking the punishment

  221. for our sin.

  222. He was dealing with the wrath

  223. that we deserve.

  224. And we are forgiven.

  225. His body

  226. was the one that was torn open.

  227. His body, if you like,

  228. was ripped apart

  229. on the cross

  230. so that the way

  231. is open for us now

  232. to go through

  233. to meet with God.

  234. And now we can come,

  235. verse 19,

  236. with confidence,

  237. without fear of rejection,

  238. without God telling us,

  239. no, you can't.

  240. We can come

  241. with confidence,

  242. and that's why

  243. we are gathered here today

  244. because of what Jesus did

  245. 2,000 years ago

  246. on the cross,

  247. his people gathering

  248. to God

  249. because of what Jesus

  250. has done.

  251. So the way is open

  252. for us to enter

  253. by faith in Christ.

  254. But not only

  255. do we have access

  256. to God

  257. through our faith

  258. in Christ,

  259. we also become

  260. part of the church

  261. family.

  262. Look at verse 21.

  263. So we have access

  264. to God

  265. because of Christ,

  266. but not only that,

  267. we have access

  268. to the church family.

  269. Verse 21,

  270. and since we have

  271. a great priest

  272. over

  273. the house of God.

  274. Now Jesus here

  275. is our ultimate priest.

  276. He's the one

  277. who makes it possible

  278. to come to God.

  279. But he also makes it

  280. possible to be part

  281. of the house of God.

  282. And the house of God

  283. is simply another way

  284. of saying

  285. the family of God,

  286. the church,

  287. God's people.

  288. Hold your finger there

  289. in chapter 10

  290. and go back

  291. to chapter 3,

  292. verse 6.

  293. Where this is spelt out

  294. clearly for us.

  295. Chapter 3,

  296. verse 6.

  297. But Christ is faithful

  298. as a son

  299. over God's house.

  300. And we are

  301. his house

  302. if we hold on

  303. to our courage

  304. and the hope

  305. of which we boast.

  306. Do you see that?

  307. Christ is the faithful son.

  308. He was the only

  309. faithful one

  310. who by his death

  311. has not only

  312. given us access

  313. to God,

  314. but he has welcomed us

  315. into the house of God.

  316. And it says here

  317. that we,

  318. the people,

  319. are the house of God.

  320. We are in his family.

  321. Now it's crucial

  322. for us to make

  323. that connection.

  324. There is faith in Christ.

  325. That's one side

  326. of the coin.

  327. But through our faith

  328. in Christ

  329. we are also part

  330. of the church family.

  331. That is the other side

  332. of the coin.

  333. And look how

  334. all of this works out

  335. back in chapter 10,

  336. verse 22.

  337. Because of our faith

  338. in Christ

  339. we are now part

  340. of the church family

  341. so,

  342. verse 22,

  343. let us

  344. together

  345. draw near

  346. to God.

  347. It doesn't say

  348. let me.

  349. Our life

  350. with Christ

  351. is not an

  352. individual exercise

  353. that we sit at home

  354. and do our own thing.

  355. It says

  356. let us

  357. together.

  358. Verse 23,

  359. let us

  360. together

  361. hold unswervingly

  362. to the hope.

  363. The Christian life

  364. is something

  365. that we do

  366. together.

  367. Verse 24,

  368. and let us

  369. consider

  370. how we spur

  371. one another on.

  372. We can't do

  373. the Christian life

  374. alone.

  375. You need me

  376. and I need you.

  377. We need

  378. each other.

  379. Verse 25,

  380. let us

  381. not give up

  382. meeting together.

  383. together.

  384. You see,

  385. the church

  386. family

  387. is God's

  388. means of

  389. enabling us

  390. to experience

  391. the full

  392. effects of

  393. the gospel,

  394. the good news

  395. of Jesus

  396. Christ.

  397. And we're

  398. never going

  399. to know

  400. all that

  401. Christ

  402. has to

  403. give us

  404. apart from

  405. the church.

  406. church.

  407. That's why

  408. we bother

  409. with church.

  410. That's why

  411. we've gotten

  412. up out of

  413. our beds

  414. this morning

  415. and that's

  416. why we've

  417. gathered

  418. together.

  419. And of

  420. course,

  421. it's not

  422. just a

  423. couple of

  424. hours here,

  425. it's 24-7,

  426. it's throughout

  427. the week.

  428. But the

  429. emphasis here

  430. I want us

  431. to see is

  432. this,

  433. let us

  434. come together.

  435. Because to

  436. cut yourself

  437. off from

  438. the church

  439. is like a

  440. deep sea

  441. diver cutting

  442. off his

  443. oxygen supply.

  444. we'll die

  445. spiritually,

  446. we'll drown,

  447. we'll not

  448. cope,

  449. we won't

  450. survive.

  451. The church

  452. family is

  453. God's

  454. means for

  455. us to

  456. experience the

  457. workings out

  458. of the

  459. gospel in

  460. our lives.

  461. So we're

  462. going to look

  463. at four ways

  464. this works

  465. out in

  466. practice.

  467. You know

  468. how we all

  469. need our

  470. greens to

  471. survive,

  472. don't we?

  473. Our

  474. vegetables.

  475. We need

  476. to have our

  477. four vegetables

  478. or whatever

  479. to have

  480. every day

  481. if we're

  482. to survive.

  483. Well here

  484. we've got

  485. four

  486. lettuces.

  487. Okay?

  488. The lettuce

  489. of verse

  490. 22,

  491. lettuce of

  492. verse 23,

  493. and lettuce

  494. of verse

  495. 24,

  496. and lettuce

  497. of verse

  498. 25.

  499. Four good

  500. greens to

  501. get into

  502. us,

  503. to help us

  504. understand

  505. what it

  506. is to be

  507. in church

  508. family.

  509. The first

  510. one then,

  511. the first

  512. lettuce,

  513. experience

  514. grace

  515. together.

  516. Verse 22,

  517. let us

  518. draw near

  519. to God

  520. with a

  521. sincere

  522. heart,

  523. in full

  524. assurance

  525. of faith,

  526. having our

  527. hearts sprinkled

  528. to cleanse

  529. us from a

  530. guilty conscience,

  531. and having

  532. our bodies

  533. washed

  534. with pure

  535. water.

  536. Now because

  537. of Jesus'

  538. death,

  539. we can

  540. come

  541. confidently

  542. with

  543. absolute

  544. assurance.

  545. The invitation

  546. is open,

  547. it's given,

  548. by faith we

  549. draw near

  550. to God

  551. to experience

  552. his grace.

  553. And coming

  554. to God,

  555. as the

  556. picture here

  557. in verse

  558. 22 is,

  559. is like

  560. stepping into

  561. a hot

  562. shower,

  563. or into

  564. a big

  565. deep bath,

  566. after a

  567. muddy day

  568. in the

  569. garden,

  570. or after

  571. rolling about

  572. in the

  573. rugby pitch.

  574. Look at

  575. what it

  576. says in

  577. verse 22.

  578. Our hearts

  579. are sprinkled

  580. clean,

  581. our conscience

  582. cleansed,

  583. and the

  584. sin that

  585. ruins our

  586. life is

  587. washed away

  588. with pure

  589. water,

  590. the pure

  591. water of

  592. Christ's

  593. forgiveness.

  594. It's an

  595. invitation to

  596. tell us that

  597. there is no

  598. sin that

  599. is so

  600. great that

  601. God's grace

  602. cannot

  603. clean.

  604. So together

  605. by faith in

  606. Christ,

  607. it's an

  608. invitation to

  609. bathe and

  610. wash in

  611. God's grace.

  612. But why

  613. do we have

  614. to do this

  615. together?

  616. together?

  617. Why can't

  618. I just

  619. come to

  620. God on

  621. my own

  622. and experience

  623. his grace

  624. without involving

  625. other people?

  626. Why can't I

  627. just do this

  628. at home?

  629. Why is there

  630. a let us

  631. draw near?

  632. Well, it

  633. doesn't rule us

  634. out coming to

  635. God on our

  636. own.

  637. It's important

  638. we do that.

  639. But the

  640. reality is,

  641. on our own,

  642. we are not

  643. always going to

  644. be people who

  645. are seeking

  646. after God's

  647. grace.

  648. You see,

  649. when we

  650. fail and

  651. fall,

  652. and we

  653. do it all

  654. the time,

  655. Satan is

  656. quick to

  657. remind us

  658. of just

  659. how bad

  660. and useless

  661. we are.

  662. And the

  663. last thing

  664. that we

  665. want to

  666. do is

  667. come to

  668. God.

  669. When we've

  670. messed up

  671. and things

  672. have gone

  673. wrong,

  674. we don't

  675. want to

  676. get anywhere

  677. near to

  678. God.

  679. We feel

  680. too ashamed,

  681. we feel

  682. too dirty,

  683. too messed

  684. up,

  685. and we

  686. kind of

  687. withdraw and

  688. we hide

  689. from God.

  690. And if

  691. that cycle

  692. continues for

  693. long enough,

  694. we'll end

  695. up completely

  696. away.

  697. But when

  698. we come

  699. together,

  700. we are

  701. reminded that

  702. we are

  703. meeting with

  704. a whole bunch

  705. of messed

  706. up sinners

  707. and failures

  708. dependent on

  709. God's grace.

  710. And that's

  711. why I love

  712. coming here

  713. on a Sunday,

  714. because I'm

  715. meeting a whole

  716. load of other

  717. messed up

  718. sinners,

  719. because that's

  720. what we all

  721. are, and

  722. we're all

  723. dependent on

  724. God's grace.

  725. And when I

  726. come here

  727. with everybody

  728. else, everybody

  729. together is

  730. focusing us on

  731. the need for

  732. God's grace.

  733. Because when

  734. my sin is

  735. so great, and

  736. when I've

  737. lost sight of

  738. God's grace,

  739. meeting with

  740. other people who

  741. are talking about

  742. grace, when

  743. people are

  744. singing about

  745. grace, when

  746. they're preaching

  747. about grace, it

  748. encourages me to

  749. seek God's

  750. grace.

  751. Just a

  752. personal

  753. experience.

  754. There are

  755. times, it

  756. doesn't happen

  757. all the time,

  758. but there have

  759. been times where

  760. the last place I

  761. want to be is

  762. standing here and

  763. speaking and

  764. preaching.

  765. There's things

  766. weighing in my

  767. life.

  768. I'm conscious of

  769. sin, and I

  770. just don't feel

  771. good enough, I

  772. don't feel worthy

  773. enough, and I

  774. just don't want to

  775. do it.

  776. But as I am

  777. here, as I

  778. hear people

  779. singing, as

  780. we're focused

  781. in on God's

  782. grace, it

  783. lifts me, it

  784. encourages me, it

  785. builds me up, and

  786. it says, it's

  787. all been cleaned.

  788. My sin has been

  789. washed away, my

  790. heart has been

  791. sprinkled, my

  792. conscience

  793. cleansed.

  794. That's why we

  795. need to come

  796. together, to

  797. experience grace

  798. together, because

  799. without each

  800. other, we will

  801. lose sight, and

  802. we won't do

  803. it.

  804. So that's our

  805. first letter that

  806. we need to get

  807. into our lives.

  808. The second is

  809. this, experience

  810. support together,

  811. verse 23.

  812. Let us hold

  813. unswervingly to

  814. the hope we

  815. profess, for he

  816. who promised is

  817. faithful.

  818. You know, the

  819. reality is, as you

  820. and I go about

  821. this week, and

  822. it's probably been

  823. the experience of

  824. the past week, we

  825. face pressure

  826. after pressure,

  827. challenge after

  828. challenge, to

  829. let go and to

  830. give up of the

  831. hope of the

  832. gospel.

  833. Because we live

  834. in a world where

  835. people live in

  836. opposition to the

  837. gospel, and they

  838. think that Christ is

  839. irrelevant.

  840. Think about it, how

  841. many times did

  842. somebody in your

  843. work or one of

  844. your neighbours

  845. come round and

  846. say, go on, keep

  847. going as a

  848. Christian?

  849. It doesn't

  850. happen very

  851. often.

  852. And if that's

  853. what we're

  854. facing every

  855. day, just the

  856. sheer struggle of

  857. being a Christian

  858. in the world,

  859. holding on to the

  860. hope is going to

  861. be very hard.

  862. And of course, we

  863. can try and play

  864. the Lone Ranger

  865. and do it my

  866. way, but

  867. experience shows

  868. it doesn't

  869. work.

  870. That's why we

  871. need to hold on

  872. to the hope

  873. together.

  874. Look at what

  875. it says.

  876. Let us

  877. hold unswervingly

  878. to the hope.

  879. we're to hold

  880. on to it for

  881. all that we

  882. are, everything

  883. that's inside of

  884. us, and

  885. everything that's

  886. inside of you

  887. together, we are

  888. to hold and

  889. grasp this hope.

  890. Because on our

  891. own, we're

  892. weak.

  893. We give in and

  894. we give up.

  895. But with the

  896. support of other

  897. people, we are

  898. able to hold on

  899. and we are able

  900. to keep going.

  901. people.

  902. In fact, that's

  903. what chapter 11

  904. is all about, as

  905. it goes through

  906. all this great

  907. big list of

  908. people of the

  909. past and how

  910. they had held

  911. to the faith.

  912. It is

  913. encouragement for

  914. us.

  915. So when we

  916. gather together,

  917. as we do like

  918. this, when we

  919. come early, and

  920. that's one of the

  921. good reasons to

  922. come early, or

  923. whether we stay

  924. late, one of the

  925. good questions to be

  926. asking is this, of

  927. each other, how

  928. is your faith?

  929. Nobody else is

  930. going to ask you

  931. that question.

  932. The only person

  933. who's going to ask

  934. you that is

  935. somebody within the

  936. church family.

  937. How is your

  938. faith?

  939. How are you

  940. getting on?

  941. And one of the

  942. greatest supports

  943. that we could give

  944. to help each

  945. other, look at

  946. the rest of

  947. verse 23.

  948. He who promised

  949. is faithful.

  950. You know what?

  951. We give up and

  952. we fail.

  953. We mess up and

  954. we let go.

  955. But here's

  956. encouragement.

  957. He who promised

  958. is faithful.

  959. God is faithful

  960. to us.

  961. He will never,

  962. ever let go of

  963. his people.

  964. And sometimes it

  965. takes one other

  966. person to remind

  967. us that he is

  968. faithful to us.

  969. So we experience

  970. this support

  971. together.

  972. we hold on to

  973. the hope

  974. that we have.

  975. So we experience

  976. grace together.

  977. We experience

  978. support together.

  979. And third, we

  980. experience compassion

  981. together.

  982. Verse 24.

  983. And let us

  984. consider how we

  985. may spur

  986. one another

  987. on towards

  988. love and

  989. good deeds.

  990. I'm summarising

  991. love and good

  992. deeds there as

  993. compassion.

  994. Compassion is

  995. responding to

  996. the needs and

  997. concerns of other

  998. people in

  999. active love.

  1000. Not just words,

  1001. but action,

  1002. in deeds.

  1003. So the church

1004. family is to be a

  1005. place where we do

  1006. experience compassion.

  1007. compassion.

  1008. Now there's a

  1009. difficulty with that.

  1010. And that is because

  1011. we're all naturally

  1012. selfish people.

  1013. Looking out for

  1014. others, surprise,

  1015. surprise, is not

1016. always the top of our

  1017. agenda.

  1018. We're looking out for

  1019. me, for number one.

1020. In fact, the truth be

  1021. told, we don't even

  1022. know what the needs

  1023. of other people are.

1024. We could maybe do a

  1025. mental check of that

  1026. right now for the

  1027. person sitting beside

  1028. you.

  1029. What are their needs?

  1030. Do you know what

  1031. they are?

  1032. Do I know what

  1033. they are?

  1034. And that's why we

  1035. gather together.

  1036. That's why we come

  1037. together as God's

  1038. people, not just on

  1039. a Sunday.

  1040. That's why we meet

  1041. in our home groups.

  1042. That's why we

  1043. encourage people to

  1044. meet throughout the

  1045. week.

  1046. Because by meeting

  1047. together, we get to

  1048. know each other.

1049. We get to know what

  1050. the needs are.

  1051. Not just about the

  1052. weather or what did

  1053. you think of the

  1054. rugby and wasn't that

  1055. disappointing that they

  1056. did.

  1057. Yes, important

  1058. conversation, but it's

  1059. not as important as

  1060. knowing what are the

1061. real needs and what are

  1062. the real concerns that

1063. we have in our lives.

1064. And when we know what

  1065. they are, then we're

  1066. able to respond with

  1067. compassion, love and

  1068. good deeds.

  1069. So again, before the

  1070. meeting starts, or even

  1071. over tea and coffee,

1072. that's why we have tea

  1073. and coffee.

  1074. an opportunity to talk

1075. to each other and to

  1076. ask each other, how

  1077. are you?

1078. And don't give the all

  1079. too common phrase, fine,

  1080. I'm sure I'm grand.

  1081. Hmm?

1082. Well, I'm sure we are

1083. grand and I'm sure we

1084. are fine, but how are

  1085. we?

1086. Is there anything that I

1087. can do to help in that

  1088. situation?

  1089. And one of the

  1090. responses to that might

1091. be to pray for that

  1092. person.

  1093. Might be just praying

1094. quietly for them in your

  1095. own time.

1096. If you know them well

  1097. enough and you're

  1098. comfortable enough with

1099. it, it might be to pray

  1100. with that person right

  1101. there.

1102. It might be to arrange

1103. to meet up for coffee or

  1104. for lunch during the

  1105. week.

1106. We've all got to eat,

  1107. haven't we?

1108. Why don't we meet at

1109. lunchtime or at a coffee

1110. time and meet up with

  1111. that person?

  1112. Read with them, pray

  1113. with them, encourage

  1114. them.

1115. We try to develop what

  1116. we call one-to-one,

  1117. which is simply meeting

  1118. with another believer,

  1119. another Christian within

  1120. the church family, just

  1121. to read 15 minutes,

  1122. whatever time you have,

  1123. to pray together.

  1124. In some cases, there

  1125. might be practical help

  1126. that's required for

  1127. people.

  1128. There might even be

  1129. financial assistance.

  1130. Who knows?

1131. We don't know what the

  1132. needs are, the concerns

  1133. are, until we talk.

1134. And let's be full of

1135. grace in all of this.

  1136. We are sinful, aren't

  1137. we?

  1138. We are failures.

1139. We don't always look out

1140. for people as we ought

  1141. to.

1142. So look what it says in

  1143. verse 24.

  1144. Consider, think about,

1145. apply, work it out, how

1146. we can spur one another

1147. on towards love and good

  1148. deeds.

1149. I've got to be thinking,

1150. how can I motivate each

  1151. other to be compassionate?

1152. How can I help us to do

  1153. that more and more?

  1154. Well, you know what?

1155. The best way that we can

1156. spur each other to be

  1157. compassionate is to be

  1158. compassionate to one

  1159. another.

1160. If you come and you're

  1161. thinking, nobody shows me

  1162. compassion around here.

  1163. Well, demonstrate that

  1164. compassion and maybe

  1165. others will follow you.

  1166. We're in it together.

  1167. We're a church family.

  1168. And this isn't a kind of

1169. beat us on the head.

  1170. Because there is

  1171. compassion, there is

  1172. support, there is

  1173. grace, there is

  1174. encouragement.

  1175. It's just simply

1176. reminding us of why we

  1177. are gathering together.

  1178. So, grace, support,

  1179. compassion.

  1180. The fourth lettuce that

1181. we need is verse 25.

1182. Let us not give up

  1183. meeting together as some

1184. are in the habit of

  1185. doing, but let us

  1186. encourage one another

1187. and all the more as you

  1188. see the day approaching.

  1189. You know what?

  1190. None of what we've

  1191. looked at so far.

  1192. Grace, support,

  1193. compassion can happen.

  1194. None of these things

  1195. can be experienced

  1196. unless we are actually

  1197. meeting together.

  1198. Sounds obvious,

  1199. but that's the truth.

1200. So we've got to be

  1201. encouraged to make

  1202. our gathering together

  1203. formally on a Sunday

  1204. morning, through the

  1205. week at home group,

  1206. and at other informal

  1207. times through the week,

1208. to make it a priority.

  1209. Now, I understand

  1210. that it's not always

  1211. possible.

  1212. I am married,

  1213. and I've got children,

  1214. and family,

  1215. there can be family

  1216. concerns.

  1217. Some people might even

  1218. have to be working.

  1219. I understand all of

  1220. that.

  1221. There can be genuine

  1222. reasons, but as verse

  1223. 25 is saying,

1224. let's be in the habit.

  1225. Let's set good

  1226. habits.

  1227. Let's plan our

  1228. diaries.

  1229. Let's think about what

1230. we're going to be doing

  1231. as a family, where

  1232. we're going to be,

  1233. who's going to be

  1234. going out on Wednesday

  1235. to home group.

  1236. Let's make that

  1237. effort.

1238. Why do we need to

  1239. make the effort?

  1240. Well, life is tough,

  1241. isn't it?

  1242. We're going to face

  1243. pressures at work.

  1244. There's difficulties

  1245. in relationships.

  1246. We have the demands

  1247. of family life.

  1248. We might even be

  1249. struggling with health.

  1250. And all of these

  1251. things can weigh us

  1252. down, but in God's

1253. grace is given to us,

  1254. the family, one

  1255. another, a source of

  1256. constant encouragement.

  1257. Let us encourage

  1258. one another all the

1259. more as you see the

  1260. day approaching.

  1261. The day, capital D,

1262. is the day of Christ's

  1263. return.

  1264. And it says it's

  1265. happening soon.

  1266. He's coming soon.

  1267. As Christ is coming,

  1268. be encouraging each

  1269. other.

  1270. Because the only

  1271. things, or the only,

  1272. all that's going to

  1273. survive are people.

  1274. So we give our

  1275. efforts and our

  1276. attention to people.

  1277. How do we encourage

  1278. each other then when

  1279. we do meet?

  1280. Well, by bringing

  1281. each other back to

  1282. grace.

  1283. To have our hearts

  1284. sprinkled, to remind

  1285. each other of the

  1286. depth of God's

  1287. amazing grace.

  1288. By getting

  1289. alongside each

  1290. other, giving that

  1291. vital support to

  1292. hold on to the

  1293. hope that we have.

  1294. By responding to

  1295. the needs and

  1296. concerns of each

  1297. other with

  1298. compassion.

1299. And by making it a

  1300. priority to gather

  1301. with God's people.

  1302. The church family

  1303. is God's means of

  1304. enabling us to

  1305. experience the

  1306. full effects of

  1307. the gospel, the

  1308. good news of

  1309. Jesus Christ.

  1310. And we're never

  1311. going to know all

  1312. that Christ has to

  1313. give us.

  1314. We'll never explore

  1315. the depths of the

  1316. riches of Christ

  1317. apart from the

  1318. church.

  1319. He's given us the

  1320. church so we can

  1321. go deeper with

  1322. all that he has

  1323. to give us.

  1324. That's why we

  1325. bother with

  1326. church.

  1327. That's why we

  1328. meet together.

  1329. Let's pray.

  1330. This is a prayer

  1331. that comes from

  1332. 2 Thessalonians

    2 Thessalonians 2:16

  1333. chapter 2

  1334. verse 16.

  1335. Just listen to

  1336. this prayer.

  1337. May our Lord

  1338. Jesus Christ

  1339. himself and God

  1340. our Father who

  1341. loved us,

  1342. and by his

  1343. grace gave us

  1344. eternal

  1345. encouragement and

  1346. good hope.

  1347. Encourage our

  1348. hearts and

  1349. strengthen us in

  1350. every good deed

  1351. and word.

  1352. And all God's

  1353. people said,

  1354. Amen.
