  1. I find where you can bring your own personal requests and prayers.

  2. So let's pray together now, let's talk to God.

  3. Our Father, we thank you for the world in which we live,

  4. for the beauty of your creation,

  5. for the provision of all that we have every day.

  6. We thank you for your control, for your rule.

  7. We thank you so much for the things that we can enjoy in this world.

  8. But yet we recognize when we look out into the world,

  9. as we listen to our news, we see that not only is it a place of beauty,

  10. but it is a place that is terribly broken,

  11. where people are living in rebellion against you,

  12. which we see in wars, we see in famine,

  13. we see in so much destruction.

  14. And so today we pray especially for the country of Syria.

  15. We pray for an end of the violence and the bloodshed.

  16. we pray for an end of the rule upon the people

  17. that is causing so much pain and so much suffering.

  18. And we pray that in its place,

  19. there would be a new leadership,

  20. a new government

  21. that would not only seek justice and peace,

  22. a government that would not only seek

  23. what is right and best for the most vulnerable,

  24. but leaders who would seek to follow the way of God

  25. and would lead people towards the Lord Jesus.

  26. We pray for the church in that country,

  27. for all the believers,

  28. for all those who know you and love you,

  29. that you would give to them courage

  30. to be peacemakers,

  31. to speak the truth of peace

  32. rather than taking up arms.

  33. So we pray, Father,

  34. that you would intervene into that land

  35. and the many nations surrounding that area too.

  36. Not only that, we pray for our own country.

  37. We thank you for all the privileges

  38. and the benefits that we enjoy.

  39. While we recognize there is hard times

  40. and economic difficulties,

  41. we praise you and thank you

  42. for the things that we do have,

  43. for our education,

  44. for our health,

  45. for benefits,

  46. for care,

  47. for the freedom that we have to meet together

  48. without fear of any authority,

  49. coming to shut this meeting down

  50. or telling us that we cannot talk about Jesus.

  51. We thank you for all that we have

  52. and we pray for our government

  53. and for our leaders

  54. that you would continue to give them wisdom

  55. in leading us and helping us.

  56. And again, we pray that it will be

  57. for the best of those who are most vulnerable

  58. and most in need within our society

  59. and our community.

  60. Now let's just take a moment,

  61. quietness,

  62. to bring our own personal requests to God.

  63. Let's just use the quietness to do that now.

  64. God bless you.

  65. So, let's go.

  66. Thank you, Father, that you are kind, generous, always listening, always caring.

  67. Thank you for this privilege that we can talk to you about all of our needs and concerns.

  68. And we pray that we would be a people who live for you, who follow you, and who trust you in every circumstance of life.

  69. We pray this in Jesus' name. Amen.

  70. Amen.

  71. Well, we're going to hear God's Word, so if you've got a Bible...

  72. I've got a Bible, and one will be brought to you.

  73. Put it up nice and high.

  74. And turn to Acts 2.

  75. As you're doing that, just for those who are going away on the church weekend, next weekend, I've been asked to announce that if you could read, if possible, all of Philippians.

  76. It's only a short book.

  77. In preparation, the book of Philippians.

  78. It will take you about 20 minutes, I reckon.

  79. Less.

  80. It doesn't take very long at all.

  81. Kirstie.

  82. Thank you.

  83. Our reading is from Acts chapter 2, starting from verse 37.

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  84. That's on page 1094 in the church Bibles.

  85. So page 1094 in the church Bibles.

  86. That's Acts chapter 2.

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  87. Starting from verse 37.

  88. When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles,

  89. Brothers, what shall we do?

  90. Peter replied,

  91. Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ, for the forgiveness of your sins,

  92. and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

  93. The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off, for all whom the Lord our God will call.

  94. With many other words, he warned them and he pleaded with them,

  95. Save yourselves from this corrupt generation.

  96. Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about 3,000 were added to their number that day.

  97. They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.

  98. Everyone was filled with awe, and many wonders and miraculous signs were done by the apostles.

  99. All the believers were together and had everything in common, selling their possessions and goods.

  100. They gave to anyone as he had need.

  101. Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts.

  102. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts,

  103. praising God and enjoying the favour of all the people.

  104. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.

  105. Well, if you've got the Welcome to sheet again on the back,

  106. and also on the screen there's an outline of the talk,

  107. you can write notes on there, or even on the back there.

  108. I'm not sure where the pens are, there are pens around, I think at the back there.

  109. If anybody would like a pen to jot down notes again, put up your hands,

  110. and you can get one there.

  111. Well, let's pray and ask for God's help as we hear his word.

  112. Let's pray together.

  113. Father, again, we thank you for this opportunity to come and to join with Stephen and with Shane

  114. as they get baptised.

  115. Help us now as we think about that,

  116. that not only would it be something they are doing,

  117. but it is something that we also understand and respond to.

  118. We pray that by your Holy Spirit,

  119. you would help us to see the good news,

  120. the wonder of who Jesus is,

  121. and all that he has given to us.

  122. In Jesus' name, Amen.

  123. So, baptism.

  124. What's it all about?

  125. Well, I'm quite sure the idea of baptism is not new.

  126. In fact, I'd say that most people who are here have been baptised either as a baby or as an adult.

  127. And depending on your background, we all have a different idea of what baptism is.

  128. But whatever our tradition and our experience is,

  129. we want to hear what the Bible has to say.

  130. In other words, you and I don't get to decide what baptism is or what it is not.

  131. We need to let God's Word, the Bible, tell us what it is.

  132. And that's why we're going to be looking at this section here in Acts chapter 2,

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  133. which is on page 1094.

  134. You can follow along there.

  135. In the book of Acts, which is really a great big story

  136. of how the good news of Jesus began to spread in the early years,

  137. we hear people talk about Jesus,

  138. and then in response, people get baptised.

  139. So let me show you a few examples of that from Acts.

  140. So look at verse 41 of chapter 2.

  141. It says,

  142. Those who accepted his message,

  143. that's the message of Jesus Christ,

  144. were baptised.

  145. Then have a look at chapter 8,

  146. verse 35.

  147. This is the story of Philip and the Ethiopian.

  148. Philip had been,

  149. or the Ethiopian had been reading something from Isaiah,

  150. and then Philip explains what it is.

  151. So in chapter 8, verse 35,

  152. it tells us there that Philip began with that very passage of Scripture

  153. and told him the good news about Jesus.

  154. As they travelled along the road,

  155. they came to some water,

  156. and the eunuch said,

  157. Look, here is water.

  158. Why shouldn't I be baptised?

  159. And he gave orders to stop the chariots.

  160. Then both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water,

  161. and Philip baptised him.

  162. Then in chapter 10,

  163. over the page from me,

  164. not sure where it is for you,

  165. but chapter 10, verse 36.

  166. Again, we're back to Peter,

  167. as somebody who went around telling people the good news about Jesus.

  168. We read in verse 36.

  169. He says,

  170. You know the message that God sent to the people of Israel,

  171. and this was the message,

  172. telling the good news of peace through Jesus Christ,

  173. who is Lord of all,

  174. whatever country or nation you are from.

  175. And then at the end of his talk,

  176. look at verse 47.

  177. Then Peter said,

  178. Can anyone keep these people from being baptised with water?

  179. They have received the Holy Spirit just as we have,

  180. so he ordered that they be baptised in the name of Jesus Christ.

  181. So, baptism is related to hearing about Jesus,

  182. and then responding to Jesus.

  183. In fact, baptism is actually a visible picture,

  184. a demonstration of the good news about Jesus.

  185. Two things,

  186. the new life that we receive from Jesus,

  187. and the new community that we enter because of Jesus.

  188. New life from Jesus,

  189. and the new community we have from Jesus.

  190. So, although Stephen and Shane are getting baptised in a little while,

  191. as we said at the beginning,

  192. it's not actually about them at all.

  193. It's all about a person,

  194. the person of Jesus Christ.

  195. So, let's have a look at these two ideas of new life and new community.

  196. First, baptism is a picture of new life,

  197. our faith in Jesus.

  198. I was talking with someone recently

  199. who told me about a man who was both deaf and blind.

  200. So, the way to communicate to this person was through hand signs.

  201. Literally, the hand would go in one hand,

  202. and through the shape he would be able to communicate

  203. and understand the other person.

  204. And this blind and deaf man was told the good news about Jesus,

  205. and in response, he too wanted to get baptised.

  206. But somewhere along the line,

  207. the communication had broken down.

  208. This poor man thought he had to jump into a pool.

  209. Now, if you're blind,

  210. that would be a huge step of faith, wouldn't it?

  211. Being told to jump

  212. and not being able to see what you are jumping into

  213. requires faith.

  214. Well, as you can see,

  215. we thankfully don't have any diving boards rigged up here,

  216. and Shane and Stephen aren't going to have to jump from a height.

  217. But, what is required

  218. is a step of faith.

  219. Faith not in a church,

  220. but faith in a person,

  221. Jesus Christ.

  222. Look at chapter 2, verse 37.

  223. It starts like this.

  224. Chapter 2, verse 37.

  225. When the people heard this,

  226. well, what had they heard?

  227. Well, Peter had been telling them the good news about Jesus.

  228. In fact, we can see what he actually had told them.

  229. Go back to verse 22 of chapter 2.

  230. Because he says there,

  231. men of Israel,

  232. listen to this.

  233. And then he went on to tell them

  234. the good news about Jesus.

  235. Now, there's three things we are going to learn

  236. about Jesus from what Peter told them.

  237. First, who Jesus is.

  238. Look at verse 22.

  239. Jesus of Nazareth

  240. was a man accredited by God to you

  241. by miracles, wonders, and signs,

  242. which God did among you through him,

  243. as you yourselves know.

  244. So he's talking about Jesus

  245. who lived on earth

  246. and did amazing miracles.

  247. By a simple word,

  248. and we can read this in the Gospels,

  249. the Gospel of Mark, for example.

  250. By a simple word,

  251. he calmed the storms.

  252. By a simple word,

  253. he healed the sick.

  254. He raised the dead to life.

  255. He fed crowds of people

  256. with only a few fish

  257. and a bit of bread.

  258. He silenced demons.

  259. He did amazing miracles.

  260. Now, amazing as that was to the people,

  261. the primary reason of all these miracles

  262. were signposts

  263. pointing people to who Jesus is,

  264. his identity.

  265. Because Jesus was doing

  266. what only God could do.

  267. Only God could raise the dead

  268. and heal the sick.

  269. And now this man was coming

  270. and he was doing the same things.

  271. Jesus was God in human form.

  272. The God who created the universe

  273. and who controls the world

  274. was walking on earth

  275. as a human being.

  276. The God-man.

  277. But look what happened

  278. to this Jesus.

  279. His death.

  280. Look at verse 23.

  281. This man was handed over to you

  282. by God's set purpose

  283. and foreknowledge

  284. and you,

  285. with the help of wicked men,

  286. put him to death

  287. by nailing him

  288. to the cross.

  289. Now, we know through reading

  290. the Gospel,

  291. through reading the Bible,

  292. that Jesus was a man

  293. who did nothing wrong.

  294. No fault could be found in him.

  295. He was perfect without sin.

  296. He lived the perfect life

  297. that you and I could never live.

  298. But yet we're told here

  299. in verse 23

  300. that he was put to death,

  301. he was executed

  302. by nailing him

  303. to a cross.

  304. Now, why was Jesus executed?

  305. An innocent man.

  306. Well, Jesus' death on the cross

  307. was all part of God's plan.

  308. Look carefully at verse 23.

  309. It tells us that this man,

  310. Jesus,

  311. was handed over to you

  312. not by chance,

  313. but by God's set purpose

  314. and foreknowledge.

  315. This was all part of God's design

  316. and plan

  317. right from the very beginning of time.

  318. Because Jesus' death on the cross

  319. was God's means of dealing

  320. with the big problem of sin.

  321. For Jesus came into the world

  322. to take our sin,

  323. my sin and your sin

  324. on himself

  325. and suffer the punishment

  326. that you and I deserve.

  327. That was the purpose

  328. of his death.

  329. Now, let me illustrate this

  330. for you.

  331. Some of you may have seen it

  332. before,

  333. but I want you to imagine

  334. that this DVD here

  335. is a record

  336. of your life

  337. or my life.

  338. It's a record

  339. of our life.

  340. Right from the very beginning

  341. of your life,

  342. right up to this moment,

  343. everything that you

  344. ever thought,

  345. everything that you

  346. ever said,

  347. everything you

  348. ever did

  349. is all recorded

  350. on here.

  351. Everything.

  352. All those public occasions,

  353. all those private occasions,

  354. everything is recorded

  355. in here.

  356. What would you think?

  357. Maybe you'd be happy

  358. with some of the things

  359. you'd see,

  360. maybe there's some things

  361. you wouldn't like.

  362. Well, if this was a record

  363. of my life,

  364. I wouldn't like it

  365. to be in the public library,

  366. that's for sure,

  367. or in extravision.

  368. Might be entertaining

  369. to you,

  370. but not to me.

  371. Because if this was

  372. a record of my life,

  373. it tells of all the things

  374. that I've ever done wrong.

  375. Now I want us to imagine

  376. that in this room.

  377. Okay, God is up there.

  378. We are here.

  379. This record of our life

  380. is a problem

  381. because it causes

  382. a barrier between us

  383. and God.

  384. All our things

  385. that we've ever done wrong,

  386. all the things

  387. that we've ever said

  388. and thought,

  389. are a barrier

  390. between us

  391. and God.

  392. And God says

  393. the punishment for that

  394. is judgment,

  395. is separation from God.

  396. God is hell itself.

  397. To be separated

  398. from all that is good

  399. and all that is beautiful.

  400. That's the problem.

  401. Christ, on the other hand,

  402. has come,

  403. we are told,

  404. the God-man

  405. who entered into the world.

  406. And he has come

  407. and through his death

  408. he takes the record

  409. of all the things

  410. that we've ever done

  411. on himself.

  412. He takes the blame.

  413. He takes the punishment.

  414. He suffers hell

  415. for you and I

  416. so that we don't have to

  417. so that what was in the way,

  418. the barrier,

  419. is now gone

  420. and we can have

  421. that relationship with God.

  422. We can know God

  423. and enjoy him

  424. and love him

  425. and have all his

  426. wonderful promises

  427. because Jesus

  428. took the record

  429. for us.

  430. But not only that,

  431. let's just change

  432. that this is no longer

  433. a record of us,

  434. but this is a record

  435. of the life of Jesus.

  436. A perfect life,

  437. a good life,

  438. a pure life,

  439. a life that never

  440. did anything wrong.

  441. Not only does Jesus

  442. take our record,

  443. but he gives us

  444. his record,

  445. his beauty,

  446. his perfection,

  447. his life,

  448. so that now

  449. when God looks at us,

  450. when he looks at me,

  451. he doesn't see me,

  452. he sees the record

  453. of Jesus Christ,

  454. which is now applied

  455. to my life

  456. through faith.

  457. And now I'm treated

  458. and loved

  459. and treasured

  460. like Jesus,

  461. like God does

  462. his own son.

  463. That's what his death

  464. is all about.

  465. That's why he died,

  466. to take our record

  467. and to give us

  468. his record.

  469. So we learn about his life,

  470. we learn about his death,

  471. but look at verse 24.

  472. We also learn about

  473. his resurrection.

  474. We're told that God

  475. raised Jesus from the dead,

  476. freeing him from the agony

  477. of death,

  478. because it was impossible

  479. for death

  480. to keep its hold

  481. on him.

  482. Jesus did die,

  483. but God also raised

  484. Jesus from the dead.

  485. Now death isn't something

  486. we like to talk about,

  487. is it?

  488. Not a very popular subject,

  489. because when people die,

  490. it means the end

  491. of relationships.

  492. It means separation.

  493. We don't get to see

  494. those people again,

  495. not on this earth

  496. or in this life.

  497. There's sadness,

  498. a loss of friends.

  499. It hurts,

  500. it's painful.

  501. And amazingly,

  502. we found lots of cures

  503. for all kinds of diseases

  504. and all kinds of

  505. health problems.

  506. We can go to the chemist,

  507. we can go to the doctor,

  508. we can get all kinds

  509. of treatments.

  510. But we can't find

  511. a cure for death.

  512. Nobody has.

  513. Except for Jesus'

  514. resurrection.

  515. Because when Jesus

  516. rose from the grave,

  517. he defeated death,

  518. he destroyed death.

  519. Or look what it says

  520. in verse 24.

  521. Jesus was freed

  522. from the agony of death.

  523. And the good news is,

  524. as Jesus says,

  525. I can free you

  526. from the agony of death.

  527. It doesn't mean to say

  528. that we won't face death,

  529. we all will die,

  530. but the Bible says

  531. death for the believer,

  532. for the person

  533. who trusts in Christ,

  534. is just like waking up

  535. from your sleep

  536. in the morning.

  537. Just a simple waking up

  538. to eternal life.

  539. That's what it's like.

  540. And Jesus is the one

  541. who can free us.

  542. He has the cure,

  543. the antidote,

  544. his resurrection

  545. from the dead.

  546. So we have here

  547. a story,

  548. an account of Jesus,

  549. the God-man

  550. who came to live

  551. in this world,

  552. who deals with sin

  553. through his own death.

  554. He defeats death

  555. through his resurrection.

  556. Now the question is,

  557. what are we to do

  558. with this good news

  559. about Jesus?

  560. What are you going to do?

  561. What am I going to do?

  562. Well, it requires a response.

  563. Look at verse 37.

  564. So when the people heard this,

  565. this was the good news

  566. about Jesus' life,

  567. his death and resurrection,

  568. when they heard

  569. all of this explained to them,

  570. they were cut to the heart

  571. and they said to Peter

  572. and the other apostles,

  573. what shall we do?

  574. What are we to do

  575. in response

  576. to what we've heard?

  577. Well, Peter replied,

  578. repent

  579. and be baptized

  580. every one of you.

  581. He was talking

  582. to crowds of people,

  583. far more than there is

  584. in this room.

  585. Repent every one of you

  586. in the name of Jesus Christ

  587. for the forgiveness

  588. of sins

  589. and you will receive

  590. the gift of the Holy Spirit.

  591. Now repentance

  592. is a double action.

  593. It means simply

  594. turning away

  595. from going your way

  596. and living your own life

  597. and turning around

  598. not just 90 degrees

  599. but 180

  600. and going Jesus' way.

  601. A complete turnaround.

  602. Repentance.

  603. Turning away from self

  604. and turning to Jesus.

  605. So no longer

  606. are we putting

  607. our faith

  608. in our own ability

  609. to deal with sin

  610. and death

  611. but now our faith

  612. is in Jesus

  613. who deals with

  614. the punishment

  615. that we deserve

  616. and he destroys

  617. death that we can

  618. never defeat.

  619. So we've got to do

  620. something about

  621. this good news of Jesus.

  622. Am I going to trust

  623. in myself

  624. to deal with

  625. sin

  626. and with death?

  627. Am I going to face

  628. the grave and say

  629. well I'm going to

  630. count on myself

  631. and I'm going to

  632. figure out a way.

  633. Am I going to

  634. trust myself

  635. to do that?

  636. Or am I actually

  637. going to turn to Jesus

  638. and say no

  639. he actually died

  640. for me.

  641. He took the blame

  642. that I deserve.

  643. He is raised

  644. from the grave.

  645. He defeated death.

  646. I can never do that.

  647. I'm going to trust him.

  648. Shane puts it

  649. like this

  650. in his story.

  651. You can read it

  652. in the little sheet

  653. later.

  654. He puts it

  655. like this.

  656. He said

  657. I had come to

  658. realise that

  659. Jesus is our

  660. substitute on the

  661. cross.

  662. He takes the pain

  663. and experiences

  664. death and hell

  665. for us

  666. so that we

  667. never have to.

  668. Not only that

  669. but because of

  670. Jesus we have

  671. an amazing promise

  672. eternal life.

  673. Stephen says

  674. it simply

  675. like this.

  676. I believed

  677. in God

  678. and asked him

  679. to forgive me

  680. for my sins.

  681. Now baptism

  682. as we'll see

  683. in a minute

  684. is just a picture

  685. of that.

  686. It's a picture

  687. of our faith.

  688. A visible

  689. demonstration

  690. of our faith

  691. in Jesus Christ.

  692. In his death

  693. and in his resurrection.

  694. So when we

  695. climb into this

  696. pool here

  697. when we go

  698. down into

  699. the water

  700. it's a picture

  701. of Jesus'

  702. death.

  703. And when

  704. Stephen and

  705. Shane go down

  706. under the water

  707. they are saying

  708. that when

  709. Jesus died

  710. he was dying

  711. for me.

  712. Jesus'

  713. death was

  714. my death.

  715. He was taking

  716. the blame.

  717. He was experiencing

  718. hell for me

  719. so that I don't

  720. have to.

  721. So when they go

  722. down under the water

  723. they are putting

  724. their faith in Jesus

  725. and saying

  726. he died for me.

  727. He did it all

  728. for me.

  729. I'm not trusting

  730. in myself

  731. but in Jesus.

  732. And then when

  733. they come up

  734. out of the water

  735. we promise

  736. we'll do that.

  737. We'll not leave you

  738. down there.

  739. We're going to

  740. bring you up.

  741. It's a picture

  742. of Jesus'

  743. resurrection.

  744. That Jesus

  745. was raised

  746. for me.

  747. That his

  748. resurrection

  749. was my

  750. resurrection.

  751. That his

  752. life,

  753. his ability

  754. to defeat

  755. death

  756. is in

  757. Jesus.

  758. They're not

  759. trusting

  760. on their

  761. own.

  762. They're not

  763. trusting in

  764. their own

  765. self or

  766. anyone else

  767. or anything

  768. else.

  769. Only in

  770. the death

  771. and the

  772. resurrection

  773. of Jesus.

  774. And this

  775. is a wonderful

  776. picture of

  777. new life.

  778. Their death

  779. and their

  780. rising again

  781. to new

  782. life.

  783. And that's

  784. what baptism

  785. is all

  786. about.

  787. It's new

  788. life.

  789. A transformed

  790. life.

  791. The hope

  792. of eternal

  793. life.

  794. A new

  795. life today.

  796. Sins

  797. forgiven

  798. and the

  799. future

  800. secured.

  801. So that's

  802. the first.

  803. It's new

  804. life.

  805. Second,

  806. baptism is

  807. also a

  808. picture of

  809. the new

  810. community or

  811. if you like

  812. the family

  813. of Jesus.

  814. Community

  815. is vital

  816. to all

  817. of our

  818. lives,

  819. isn't it?

  820. In fact,

  821. most of us

  822. I say long

  823. for real

  824. community.

  825. Friendships,

  826. relationships,

  827. people that

  828. are going to

  829. support us

  830. and encourage

  831. us and

  832. never let

  833. us down.

  834. A place

  835. where we

  836. can feel

  837. safe,

  838. a place

  839. where we

  840. feel we

  841. belong,

  842. a place

  843. where we're

  844. not going

  845. to be

  846. left out

  847. and even

  848. if we

  849. mess up

  850. we're

  851. still going

  852. to be

  853. welcomed.

  854. That's

  855. the kind

  856. of community

  857. we want.

  858. Now most

  859. of us

  860. belong to

  861. communities.

  862. You live

  863. in a

  864. neighbourhood

  865. don't you?

  866. Or on a

  867. street

  868. somewhere?

  869. That's a

  870. little

  871. community.

  872. We all

  873. live within

  874. the bigger

  875. community of

  876. Carragaline.

  877. Maybe some

  878. of you belong

  879. to a sports

  880. community or

  881. a social

  882. club.

  883. We all

  884. belong to

  885. little

  886. communities.

  887. Now it

  888. tells us here

  889. that when our

  890. faith is in

  891. Jesus Christ

  892. you know

  893. what?

  894. We become

  895. part of a

  896. new

  897. community,

  898. a new

  899. family.

  900. family.

  901. Look at

  902. verse 40.

  903. It says

  904. with many

  905. other words

  906. Peter warned

  907. them and

  908. he pleaded

  909. with them

  910. save yourselves

  911. from this

  912. corrupt

  913. generation.

  914. He's telling

  915. the people

  916. look you're

  917. to leave

  918. this old

  919. community.

  920. Leave the

  921. community of

  922. people who

  923. do not

  924. put their

  925. faith in

  926. Jesus.

  927. Who do

  928. not have

  929. Jesus at

  930. the centre

  931. of their

  932. lives.

  933. And devote

  934. yourself or

  935. join this

  936. new community

  937. who do

  938. have Jesus

  939. at the

  940. centre.

  941. Now of

  942. course that

  943. doesn't mean

  944. we all have

  945. to leave our

  946. neighbourhoods

  947. and go and

  948. live in some

  949. little commune

  950. somewhere or

  951. stop going to

  952. our sports

  953. club or

  954. anything else

  955. like that.

  956. Don't do

  957. that.

  958. Stay where

  959. you are and

  960. live where

  961. you are and

  962. keep being

  963. involved where

  964. you are.

  965. Both of

  966. you.

  967. Keep

  968. involved where

  969. you are with

  970. your friends.

  971. Don't ever

  972. leave them.

  973. Alright?

  974. But what

  975. does it

  976. mean this

  977. leaving to

  978. another

  979. community?

  980. Well it

  981. simply means

  982. that we

  983. have this

  984. awesome

  985. privilege and

  986. responsibility

  987. of belonging

  988. to those

  989. who also

  990. love Jesus.

  991. Look what

  992. it looks

  993. like.

  994. Verse 42

  995. it says

  996. they now

  997. devoted

  998. themselves

  999. so they

  1000. leave one

  1001. community

  1002. and connect

  1003. themselves to

  1004. another

  1005. community.

  1006. They

  1007. devoted

  1008. themselves

  1009. to the

  1010. apostles

  1011. teaching

  1012. that's

  1013. devoting

  1014. themselves

  1015. to the

  1016. good news

  1017. about

  1018. Jesus

  1019. and

  1020. learning

  1021. from

  1022. God's

  1023. word

  1024. to the

  1025. fellowship

  1026. that's

  1027. to the

  1028. rest of

  1029. the people

  1030. to the

  1031. breaking

  1032. of bread

  1033. remembering

  1034. everything

  1035. that Jesus

  1036. had done

  1037. for them

  1038. his death

  1039. and to

  1040. prayer.

  1041. And verse

  1042. 44

  1043. all of

  1044. the

  1045. believers

  1046. were

  1047. together

  1048. and they

  1049. had

  1050. everything

  1051. in

  1052. common.

  1053. They

  1054. were even

  1055. selling

  1056. their

  1057. possessions

  1058. and goods

  1059. and they

  1060. gave to

  1061. anyone

  1062. as he

  1063. had

  1064. need.

  1065. Now

  1066. this isn't

  1067. a community

  1068. of rules

  1069. and regulations

  1070. where everything

  1071. is decided

  1072. for you

  1073. or we're

  1074. suddenly going

  1075. to ask

  1076. Stephen and

  1077. Shane to

  1078. hand over

  1079. their bank

  1080. account details

  1081. or no

  1082. it's not

  1083. like that

  1084. at all.

  1085. It's like

  1086. a family.

  1087. It's a

  1088. place of

  1089. support and

  1090. care,

  1091. a place

  1092. where people

  1093. grow and

  1094. learn.

  1095. It's a

  1096. community

  1097. of

  1098. continual

  1099. forgiveness

  1100. and

  1101. unconditional

  1102. love.

  1103. And of

  1104. course it's

  1105. not perfect

  1106. because this

  1107. community is

  1108. made up of

  1109. people.

  1110. I'm involved

  1111. in that

  1112. community.

  1113. That's one

  1114. good reason

  1115. why it's

  1116. not perfect.

  1117. And Stephen

  1118. and Shane

  1119. are joining.

  1120. That's another

  1121. reason why

  1122. it's not

  1123. perfect.

  1124. He was

  1125. already blaming

  1126. his brother

  1127. earlier on

  1128. for being

  1129. late.

  1130. That's how

  1131. imperfect it

  1132. is.

  1133. But this

  1134. is a

  1135. community

  1136. that depends

  1137. on the

  1138. daily grace

  1139. and mercy

  1140. of God.

  1141. We're

  1142. messed up

  1143. people who

  1144. get it

  1145. wrong all

  1146. the time

  1147. but we're

  1148. simply

  1149. depending on

  1150. his grace

  1151. each and

  1152. every day

  1153. and seeking

  1154. to live

  1155. that grace

  1156. out with

  1157. each other.

  1158. Stephen

  1159. puts it

  1160. like this

  1161. in his

  1162. story.

  1163. This is

  1164. after his

  1165. faith.

  1166. He says

  1167. I then

  1168. knew in

  1169. my heart

  1170. that God

  1171. really had

  1172. forgiven me

  1173. and that I

  1174. was saved.

  1175. I knew I

  1176. was part of

  1177. God's family

  1178. and that I

  1179. was a citizen

  1180. of heaven.

  1181. From then

  1182. on I began

  1183. to grow

  1184. every day

  1185. as a

  1186. believer.

  1187. Shane

  1188. says it

  1189. like this.

  1190. He says

  1191. it's bizarre

  1192. to me

  1193. that you

  1194. can know

  1195. someone for

  1196. five minutes

  1197. but instantly

  1198. have a

  1199. strong bond

  1200. thanks to

  1201. a shared

  1202. love of

  1203. Jesus

  1204. you automatically

  1205. feel as if

  1206. you have a

  1207. bond with

  1208. the other.

  1209. It's bizarre

  1210. isn't it?

  1211. But it's

  1212. very true.

  1213. Now the

  1214. question is

  1215. how do

  1216. people know

  1217. that Stephen

  1218. and Shane

  1219. are a part

  1220. of this

  1221. new community?

  1222. Well hopefully

  1223. by the way

  1224. they live

  1225. and the way

  1226. they care

  1227. for others

  1228. and the way

  1229. they help

  1230. out which

  1231. is what

  1232. they do

  1233. but the

  1234. sign

  1235. well look

  1236. at verse

  1237. 41 was

  1238. that they

  1239. were

  1240. baptized.

  1241. Look at

  1242. verse 41

  1243. those who

  1244. accepted the

  1245. message

  1246. the good

  1247. news about

  1248. Jesus

  1249. were baptized

  1250. and about

  1251. 3,000 were

  1252. added to

  1253. their number

  1254. that day.

  1255. They just

  1256. simply became

  1257. part of

  1258. the community.

  1259. You see

  1260. baptism was

  1261. like an

  1262. initiation.

  1263. It was a

  1264. sign to

  1265. say that

  1266. we're no

  1267. longer part

  1268. of this

  1269. community

  1270. we're

  1271. part of

  1272. this

  1273. community

  1274. the family

  1275. of Jesus.

  1276. You see

  1277. our faith

  1278. in Jesus

  1279. is not

  1280. just some

  1281. personal

  1282. affair

  1283. that we

  1284. conduct

  1285. out there

  1286. somewhere in

  1287. our house

  1288. on our

  1289. own

  1290. and do

  1291. it when

  1292. we want

  1293. to.

  1294. No it's

  1295. a public

  1296. event

  1297. of joining

  1298. the family

  1299. of Jesus.

  1300. Faith in

  1301. Jesus

  1302. and the

  1303. family of

  1304. Jesus.

  1305. You can't

  1306. separate them.

  1307. They belong

  1308. together.

  1309. And that's

  1310. why we have

  1311. this public

  1312. event inviting

  1313. people to

  1314. come and to

  1315. share that

  1316. they're saying

  1317. yes I'm a

  1318. follower of

  1319. Jesus,

  1320. yes I have

  1321. faith in

  1322. Jesus and

  1323. yes I'm in

  1324. the family

  1325. of Jesus.

  1326. Jesus.

  1327. Now in a

  1328. moment Shane

  1329. and Stephen

  1330. are going to

  1331. get baptised

  1332. but as we

  1333. said at the

  1334. very beginning

  1335. it's not

  1336. actually about

  1337. them.

  1338. If we think

  1339. it's about

  1340. them we've

  1341. missed the

  1342. point.

  1343. And it's

  1344. not even

  1345. about this

  1346. church.

  1347. It's a

  1348. Baptist

  1349. church.

  1350. So be it

  1351. but it's

  1352. not actually

  1353. about this

  1354. church either.

  1355. It's all

  1356. about Jesus

  1357. Christ.

  1358. Their

  1359. baptism is a

  1360. picture of

  1361. their new

  1362. life.

  1363. Our faith

  1364. in Jesus.

  1365. The new

  1366. community.

  1367. The family

  1368. of Jesus.

  1369. But is this

  1370. just for

  1371. Shane and

  1372. Stephen?

  1373. Is the

  1374. good news

  1375. of Jesus

  1376. Christ just

  1377. for these

  1378. two people

  1379. here?

  1380. The new

  1381. life, the

  1382. new community

  1383. is it just

  1384. kind of for

  1385. a few?

  1386. Well look

  1387. at verse

  1388. 39.

  1389. I don't

  1390. think it

  1391. is.

  1392. I think

  1393. it's open

  1394. to all.

  1395. Look at

  1396. verse 39.

  1397. This

  1398. promise,

  1399. the new

  1400. life, the

  1401. new community

  1402. is for

  1403. you and

  1404. your children

  1405. and for

  1406. all who

  1407. are far

  1408. off.

  1409. So he

  1410. was talking,

  1411. this is like

  1412. 2,000 years

  1413. ago, so

  1414. we're these

  1415. people who

  1416. are far

  1417. off at

  1418. this stage,

  1419. a long

  1420. ways off,

  1421. 2,000 years

  1422. off.

  1423. and for

  1424. all whom

  1425. the Lord

  1426. our God

  1427. will call.

  1428. You see,

  1429. God has

  1430. done a

  1431. work in

  1432. Stephen and

  1433. Shane's

  1434. life.

  1435. He's

  1436. helped them

  1437. to see

  1438. and understand.

  1439. He's given

  1440. them understanding

  1441. and he's

  1442. brought them

  1443. to a place

  1444. of faith.

  1445. That's God's

  1446. work in

  1447. their life

  1448. and this

  1449. promise is

  1450. open to

  1451. everybody

  1452. who will

  1453. come and

  1454. trust him.

  1455. they've

  1456. responded to

  1457. the good

  1458. news.

  1459. They've

  1460. put their

  1461. faith in

  1462. Jesus.

  1463. They've

  1464. identified

  1465. themselves

  1466. with belonging

  1467. to the

  1468. family of

  1469. Jesus.

  1470. Baptism

  1471. is simply

  1472. a sign

  1473. of those

  1474. things.

  1475. What's

  1476. our

  1477. response?

  1478. What's

  1479. my response?

  1480. What's

  1481. your

  1482. response

  1483. to the

  1484. good

  1485. news

  1486. of

  1487. Jesus?

  1488. Have

  1489. you got

  1490. faith in

  1491. Jesus?

  1492. is your

  1493. faith in

  1494. his death

  1495. and

  1496. resurrection

  1497. or are

  1498. you going

  1499. to trust

  1500. yourself

  1501. or are

  1502. you going

  1503. to trust

  1504. him?

  1505. What about

  1506. the family

  1507. of Jesus?

  1508. Is the

  1509. Christian life

  1510. something you

  1511. just want to

  1512. live on

  1513. your own

  1514. or have

  1515. you committed

  1516. to the

  1517. family?

  1518. It's part of

  1519. the same

  1520. thing.

  1521. If you have

  1522. faith in

  1523. Jesus,

  1524. you're in

  1525. the family

  1526. of Jesus.

  1527. You can't

  1528. separate it.

  1529. This is the

  1530. good news

  1531. that Christ

  1532. has come

  1533. to bring

  1534. us.

  1535. Stephen and

  1536. Shane have

  1537. responded.

  1538. We all

  1539. need to

  1540. respond

  1541. to this

  1542. message.

  1543. Let's

  1544. pray

  1545. and then

  1546. we are

  1547. going to

  1548. baptise

  1549. Stephen and

  1550. Shane,

  1551. but we'll

  1552. pray and

  1553. then we'll

  1554. just have a

  1555. little minute

  1556. or two and

  1557. somebody can

  1558. go and get

  1559. the others.

  1560. But let's

  1561. just pray

  1562. together

  1563. first.

  1564. Let's

  1565. just use

  1566. a moment's

  1567. silence

  1568. for us

  1569. all to

  1570. respond to

  1571. what we've

  1572. heard.

  1573. When they

  1574. heard the

  1575. message,

  1576. they said,

  1577. what shall

  1578. we do?

  1579. And Peter

  1580. replied,

  1581. repent

  1582. and be

  1583. baptised,

  1584. every one

  1585. of you.

  1586. Father, we

  1587. thank you

  1588. that it's

  1589. not dependent

  1590. on ourselves,

  1591. but it's

  1592. dependent on

  1593. the Lord

  1594. Jesus,

  1595. that he

  1596. died our

  1597. death.

  1598. He took

  1599. the blame

  1600. that you

  1601. and I

  1602. deserve.

  1603. He defeated

  1604. death for

  1605. us,

  1606. something that

  1607. we could

  1608. never do,

  1609. so that we

  1610. might have

  1611. new and

  1612. eternal life.

  1613. But not

  1614. only that,

  1615. he has given

  1616. us the

  1617. wonderful family

  1618. of Jesus,

  1619. other people

  1620. to care and

  1621. support and

  1622. encourage,

  1623. people who

  1624. forgive.

  1625. People who

  1626. show grace

  1627. and mercy

  1628. and love.

  1629. We thank

  1630. you for

  1631. these wonderful

  1632. things that

  1633. we can have

  1634. because of

  1635. you.

  1636. We thank

  1637. you for

  1638. Stephen and

  1639. Shane.

  1640. Thank you

  1641. that they

  1642. have put

  1643. their faith

  1644. in you.

  1645. Thank you

  1646. that they

  1647. love you.

  1648. And we

  1649. pray your

  1650. help for

  1651. them as

  1652. they go

  1653. into school

  1654. and college

  1655. at the

  1656. beginning

  1657. of this

  1658. week.

  1659. That they

  1660. would be

  1661. strong for

  1662. you,

  1663. that they

  1664. would live

  1665. for you,

  1666. that they

  1667. would be

  1668. people who

  1669. tell others

  1670. the good

  1671. news and

  1672. bring that

  1673. same love

  1674. wherever they

  1675. go.

  1676. Encourage

  1677. them in

  1678. their lives.

  1679. Bless

  1680. them.

  1681. Keep

  1682. them strong.

  1683. Keep

  1684. them focused

  1685. on you.

  1686. We pray

  1687. all these

  1688. things in

  1689. Jesus'

  1690. name.

  1691. Amen.

  1692. So I'm

  1693. going to

  1694. ask Stephen

  1695. on you.

  1696. Hold on

  1697. water on e

  1698. and for

  1699. to

  1700. to

  1701. be

  1702. good.
