  1. 109 of the church bible and we're going to read all of chapter 1 so someone's going to read verses 1 to 12 and then 13 to 22.

  2. Job chapter 1 or yeah chapter 1 sorry in verse 1.

    Job 1 chapter mention

  3. In the land of Uz there lived a man whose name was Job. This man was blameless and upright. He feared God and shunned evil.

  4. He had seven sons and three daughters and he owned 7,000 sheep, 3,000 camels, 500 yoke of oxen and 500 donkeys and had a large number of servants.

  5. He was the greatest man among all the people of the east.

  6. His sons used to take turns holding feasts in their homes and he would invite their three sisters to eat and drink with them.

  7. When a period of feasting had run its course Job would send and have them purified.

  8. Early in the morning he would sacrifice a burnt offering for each of them thinking perhaps my children have sinned and cursed God in their hearts.

  9. This was Job's regular custom.

  10. One day the angels came to present themselves before the Lord and Satan also came with them.

  11. The Lord said to Satan, Where have you come from?

  12. Satan answered the Lord, From roaming through the earth and going to and fro in it.

  13. Then the Lord said to Satan, Have you considered my servant Job?

  14. There is no one on earth like him. He is blameless and upright, a man who fears God and shuns evil.

  15. Does Job fear God for nothing? Satan replied.

  16. Have you not put a hedge around him and his household and everything he has?

  17. You have blessed the work of his hands so that his flocks and herds are spread throughout the land.

  18. But stretch out your hands and strike everything he has and he will surely curse you to your face.

  19. The Lord said to Satan, Very well then.

  20. Everything he has is in your hands.

  21. But on the man himself do not lay a finger.

  22. Then Satan went out from the presence of the Lord.

  23. One day when Job's sons and daughters were feasting and drinking wine at the oldest brother's house,

  24. a messenger came to Job and said,

  25. The oxen were plowing and the donkeys were grazing nearby,

  26. and the Sabians attacked and carried them off.

  27. They put the servants to the sword, and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you.

  28. While he was still speaking, another messenger came and said,

  29. The fire of God fell from the sky and burned up the sheep and the servants,

  30. and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you.

  31. While he was still speaking, another messenger came and said,

  32. The Chaldeans formed three raiding parties and swept down on your camels and carried them off.

  33. They put the servants to the sword, and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you.

  34. While he was still speaking, yet another messenger came and said,

  35. Your sons and daughters were feasting and drinking wine at the oldest brother's house,

  36. when suddenly a mighty wind swept in from the desert and struck the four corners of the house.

  37. It collapsed on them, and they are dead, and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you.

  38. At this, Job got up and tore his robe and shaved his head.

  39. Then he fell to the ground in worship and said,

  40. Naked I came from my mother's womb, and naked I shall depart.

  41. The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away.

  42. May the name of the Lord be praised.

  43. In all this, Job did not sin by charging God with wrongdoing.

  44. Well, we are going to be looking at this book over the next number of weeks,

  45. and time to time I will recommend some books that relate to this theme.

  46. I have got three this morning, some that I have read that you may find helpful.

  47. This one is just a very simple little book.

  48. It's called Suffering and Evil, aimed at kind of teenage years.

  49. But if you've got a simple mind like me, then that's the book for you.

  50. It's a very simple read.

  51. This one on a similar vein is,

  52. If I were God, I would end all the pain,

  53. written by a man whose father died in an airplane crash,

  54. and he works through that whole issue of suffering and the big question, why?

  55. Okay, this one is a little bit more, I think, better.

  56. It's a longer read, a little bit more pastoral.

  57. Suffering Well, the Predictable Surprise of Christian Suffering.

  58. And it really says, look, it's not if we suffer, but when we suffer,

  59. because we're all going to face it at some stage or another,

  60. asking all those questions and how to deal with it as Christian people.

  61. So those are three books that I recommend,

  62. and there'll be others along the way that I'll be pointing out too.

  63. So you can look at them afterwards if you wish.

  64. Well, let's get to the book of the Bible,

  65. the book that we can trust, God's Word.

  66. Let's pray.

  67. Father, we recognise that all of us will face some form of suffering,

  68. and perhaps we are already in it or have gone through it.

  69. And we come with all kinds of questions and struggles,

  70. and we want to come with you openly and honestly,

  71. asking that you would speak into our lives,

  72. that you would help us to understand your ways better,

  73. but ultimately that you would give us a heart

  74. that submits to you and trusts you.

  75. Even when the darkness closes in,

  76. we would still be able to say,

  77. blessed be the name of the Lord.

  78. Please help us.

  79. In Jesus' name.

  80. Amen.

  81. Amen.

  82. A loving family,

  83. with all their plans and dreams ahead of them,

  84. are greeted with the unwelcome news

  85. that the husband has a tumour.

  86. With great strength and determination and faith in God,

  87. they fight through all the operations,

  88. all the treatment and the pain.

  89. Just after the birth of their second child,

  90. which he's become too weak to hold,

  91. he leaves this world as death takes over.

  92. Why?

  93. A young man has become a Christian.

  94. He turns from his selfish life to submit to God.

  95. He was told that the cost of becoming a Christian,

  96. that friends might turn their back on you,

  97. and people might even criticise you.

  98. But he never thought his wife would leave him,

  99. taking with her their only child.

  100. Why?

  101. A family who obeyed God's call

  102. to go and serve the people in North Asia.

  103. At great sacrifice,

  104. they leave their family and friends,

  105. bringing with them the good news of the gospel.

  106. The conditions they are at are poor and basic,

  107. but filled with a love for God,

  108. they go on serving their neighbours around them.

  109. Tragically,

  110. their little son dies in an awful accident,

  111. burned from an open cooking fire.

  112. Why?

  113. A pastor and his wife rush to the hospital,

  114. ready for the birth of their fourth child.

  115. The delivery goes well,

  116. but as the early days pass,

  117. it becomes apparent

  118. that their daughter is not going to survive for very long.

  119. Amazingly, she does survive,

  120. but requires 24-7 care.

  121. Now more than 20 years later,

  122. she still can't walk or talk

  123. or go to the loo by herself.

  124. Why?

  125. Now I'm sure you all have your own stories

  126. of people who suffer,

  127. but each one of these are people that I know.

  128. And their suffering is not just

  129. an intellectual problem with the head,

  130. it's experienced,

  131. and they live with the pain

  132. and the heartache

  133. every single day.

  134. And of course,

  135. it's natural for us

  136. that when we are facing suffering,

  137. that we ask the question,

  138. why?

  139. Why me?

  140. Why this?

  141. Why now?

  142. And it's a question

  143. that we all want answers to,

  144. but there are no easy answers.

  145. When we ask the question,

  146. why?

  147. God in his wisdom

  148. has given us a book

  149. called Job,

  150. which is 42 chapters long.

  151. In other words,

  152. it's telling us

  153. that there is no quick fix.

  154. There are no pat answers.

  155. You can't just do it

  156. in one easy session.

  157. As one writer has put it,

  158. these are not armchair questions.

  159. These are wheelchair questions.

  160. So as we read through Job,

  161. we are invited to watch

  162. and listen

  163. and to learn

  164. from one man's experience

  165. of suffering.

  166. It's a real

  167. and an honest account

  168. of personal pain,

  169. heartache,

  170. and tragedy.

  171. It's a journey

  172. of one man

  173. as he gets angry,

  174. confronting God

  175. and questioning God

  176. and shaking his fist

  177. at God

  178. to cope with suffering,

  179. to deal with suffering,

  180. to understand suffering.

  181. We need to take time

  182. to immerse ourselves

  183. in this story.

  184. In some way,

  185. this story

  186. must become

  187. our story.

  188. We've got to let it

  189. touch our hearts

  190. and to impact our minds.

  191. We are to feel

  192. his pain.

  193. We're to ask

  194. his questions

  195. and we are to submit

  196. to his God.

  197. So as we go over

  198. these studies

  199. over the next few weeks,

  200. there's got to be

  201. some clear signposts

  202. that we have in place.

  203. They don't answer

  204. all of our questions.

  205. In fact,

  206. at the end of this study,

  207. there are going to be

  208. more questions.

  209. But what they do

  210. is they begin

  211. to point us

  212. in the right direction.

  213. They help us

  214. to start the journey

  215. as we live life

  216. in a suffering world.

  217. So signpost number one

  218. is this,

  219. innocent suffering.

  220. Job is innocent,

  221. but yet he suffers.

  222. You know the stories

  223. that I told

  224. at the beginning

  225. have all one thing

  226. in common.

  227. Those involved

  228. are all

  229. innocent people.

  230. I don't mean

  231. they're perfect

  232. because none of them

  233. will tell you

  234. that they're perfect.

  235. But what I mean

  236. is they are hard-working,

  237. loving and caring people

  238. who seek to do

  239. what is right

  240. and good.

  241. You see,

  242. some suffering

  243. that happens

  244. as a result

  245. of our foolish actions.

  246. We can understand that.

  247. So somebody

  248. might drink too much,

  249. they get in their car,

  250. they end up having a crash

  251. and they have brain damage.

  252. And as tragic

  253. and as awful

  254. as that is,

  255. we can understand

  256. that there's a logic

  257. to it.

  258. But when people

  259. suffer for no

  260. apparent reason,

  261. then that's really hard.

  262. When good,

  263. honest and caring

  264. people get sick

  265. and they struggle

  266. with terrible pain

  267. and then they die.

  268. When people

  269. who love justice

  270. and seek peace

  271. get mugged

  272. and stabbed.

  273. When hard-working,

  274. generous people

  275. lose their savings

  276. and job,

  277. we find it very difficult

  278. to understand.

  279. But that's the story

  280. of Job.

  281. Job is introduced

  282. to us,

  283. look at verse 3

  284. of chapter 1,

  285. the end of verse 3,

  286. as the greatest man

  287. among all the people

  288. of the East.

  289. He is obviously

  290. a man of great influence

  291. and power.

  292. He has considerable wealth.

  293. Look at verse 2.

  294. He had seven sons

  295. and three daughters

  296. and he owned

  297. 7,000 sheep,

  298. 3,000 camels,

  299. 500 yoke of oxen

  300. and 500 oxen

  301. and he had a large

  302. number of servants.

  303. He's in millionaire status.

  304. But he doesn't allow

  305. his wealth to rule

  306. or ruin his life.

  307. Look at verse 1.

  308. We're told there

  309. in the middle

  310. that this man

  311. was blameless

  312. and upright.

  313. He feared God

  314. and he shunned evil.

  315. Or as God says

  316. in verse 8,

  317. there is no one

  318. on earth

  319. like him.

  320. Job is a man

  321. of integrity

  322. and honesty.

  323. He seeks

  324. what is good.

  325. He loves God,

  326. not just in words,

  327. but in his actions.

  328. And he hates

  329. evil.

  330. But not only that,

  331. he's not only concerned

  332. for his own spiritual life,

  333. he's concerned

  334. for his whole family.

  335. Look at verse 4.

  336. His sons used

  337. to take turns

  338. holding feasts

  339. or parties

  340. in their homes

  341. and they would invite

  342. their three sisters

  343. to eat and drink

  344. with them.

  345. And when a period

  346. of feasting

  347. had run its course,

  348. Job would send

  349. and have them purified.

  350. Early in the morning

  351. he would sacrifice

  352. a burnt offering

  353. for each of them

  354. thinking,

  355. perhaps my children

  356. have sinned

  357. and have cursed God

  358. in their hearts.

  359. You see,

  360. Job is the kind

  361. of neighbour

  362. you would want,

  363. the kind of friend

  364. that you'd love

  365. to have,

  366. the husband

  367. or the father

  368. that you would dream of,

  369. the employer

  370. you'd love to be

  371. working for.

  372. You can't fault him.

  373. He's innocent.

  374. But then all of a sudden

  375. and without warning,

  376. he is destroyed

  377. by personal suffering.

  378. In the first scene,

  379. look at verse 15.

  380. He loses his donkeys

  381. and servants

  382. to some act of war,

  383. not unlike what's

  384. going on in Syria.

  385. Then in verse 16,

  386. through some natural disaster,

  387. most likely it's

  388. lightning,

  389. but we're told

  390. that fire wipes out

  391. his sheep

  392. and more servants.

  393. And then in verse 17,

  394. there's more violence

  395. as all his camels

  396. are stolen

  397. and his remaining

  398. servants are

  399. brutally butchered.

  400. And if that were

  401. not enough,

  402. in verse 18,

  403. all of his children

  404. and their families

  405. and all the grandchildren

  406. are killed

  407. in what seems like

  408. a tornado

  409. or a hurricane,

  410. a natural disaster

  411. similar to what

  412. had struck

  413. at Japan

  414. a year ago.

  415. And then in the second

  416. scene,

  417. in chapter 2,

  418. verse 7,

  419. it gets even

  420. more personal.

  421. We're told there

  422. that Job is afflicted

  423. with painful sores

  424. from the tip of his toes

  425. to the top of his head,

  426. excruciating pain

  427. all day

  428. and all night.

  429. In a matter of days,

  430. his life is ruined,

  431. broken,

  432. and destroyed.

  433. An innocent man

  434. experiencing

  435. unimaginable suffering.

  436. And as we said,

  437. suffering that happens

  438. as a result of our

  439. foolish actions,

  440. we can understand,

  441. we can kind of get

  442. our heads around it,

  443. but innocent people

  444. who suffer,

  445. well, that's too hard

  446. to bear.

  447. And it's that kind

  448. of suffering that

  449. begins to ask

  450. the question,

  451. why?

  452. Why did God

  453. allow this to happen?

  454. Why did God

  455. not intervene?

  456. Such suffering

  457. threatens to destroy

  458. our faith,

  459. our hope,

  460. and our meaning

  461. and purpose,

  462. and to get our heads

  463. around the world

  464. that we live in.

  465. Another man

  466. who knew

  467. great suffering

  468. was a man

  469. called

  470. Elie Wiesel.

  471. As a teenager,

  472. he was shoved

  473. with his family,

  474. a Jewish family,

  475. into a cattle hold

  476. onto a train

  477. and taken

  478. to Auschwitz.

  479. On the first night

  480. of being in that

  481. concentration camp,

  482. he witnessed

  483. his mother

  484. and his little sister

  485. being forced

  486. into a giant

  487. furnace.

  488. and as he

  489. reflects,

  490. this is what

  491. he writes.

  492. He reflects

  493. on that night.

  494. Never

  495. shall I forget

  496. that night,

  497. the first night

  498. in camp

  499. that turned

  500. my life

  501. into one

  502. long night,

  503. seven times

  504. sealed.

  505. Never shall I

  506. forget that smoke,

  507. never shall I

  508. forget the

  509. small faces

  510. of the children

  511. whose bodies

  512. I saw

  513. transformed into

  514. smoke under

  515. a silent sky.

  516. Never shall I

  517. forget those flames

  518. that consumed

  519. my faith

  520. forever.

  521. Never shall I

  522. forget the

  523. nocturnal silence

  524. that deprived me

  525. for all eternity

  526. of the desire

  527. to live.

  528. Never shall I

  529. forget those moments

  530. that murdered

  531. that murdered

  532. my God

  533. and my soul

  534. and turned

  535. my dreams

  536. to ashes.

  537. Never shall I

  538. forget these

  539. things,

  540. even were I

  541. condemned to

  542. live as long

  543. as God

  544. himself.

  545. Never.

  546. Do you hear

  547. what he said?

  548. Never shall I

  549. forget those flames

  550. that consumed

  551. my faith.

  552. Never shall I

  553. forget those

  554. moments that

  555. murdered my

  556. God.

  557. You see,

  558. innocent suffering

  559. when it comes

  560. threatens to

  561. destroy our

  562. faith,

  563. our hope,

  564. our meaning,

  565. our purpose.

  566. What is this

  567. world that we're

  568. living in?

  569. And if we are

  570. to leave it there

  571. at this point,

  572. it would leave us

  573. without faith,

  574. without hope,

  575. without meaning,

  576. like Elie

  577. Wiesel.

  578. But God has

  579. so much more

  580. to say.

  581. Our second

  582. signpost is

  583. this.

  584. Satanic

  585. influence.

  586. Satan is

  587. real,

  588. but not

  589. in control.

  590. When suffering

  591. happens,

  592. people tend

  593. to blame

  594. Satan.

  595. In other

  596. words,

  597. everything bad

  598. that happens

  599. in this world

  600. is the work

  601. and the influence

  602. of Satan.

  603. But everything

  604. good that

  605. happens is

  606. the result

  607. of God's

  608. goodness and

  609. his love.

  610. But that's

  611. not how it's

  612. presented in

  613. Job.

  614. Unknown to

  615. Job,

  616. and let's

  617. remember this,

  618. unknown to

  619. Job,

  620. but known

  621. to us,

  622. the reader,

  623. God and

  624. Satan are

  625. in conversation

  626. behind the

  627. scenes.

  628. Look at

  629. verse 6,

  630. chapter 1.

  631. One day

  632. the angels

  633. came to

  634. present themselves

  635. before the

  636. Lord,

  637. and Satan

  638. came with

  639. them.

  640. The Lord

  641. said to

  642. Satan,

  643. where have

  644. you come

  645. from?

  646. Satan

  647. answered the

  648. Lord,

  649. from roaming

  650. through the

  651. earth and

  652. going to

  653. and throw

  654. in it.

  655. There's

  656. something evil

  657. and sinister

  658. there,

  659. isn't there?

  660. Satan

  661. wandering

  662. around the

  663. earth looking

  664. for ways

  665. to get

  666. at people.

  667. Verse 8,

  668. then the

  669. Lord said

  670. to Satan,

  671. if you

  672. considered my

  673. servant Job,

  674. there is

  675. no one

  676. on earth

  677. like him,

  678. he is

  679. blameless

  680. and upright,

  681. a man

  682. who fears

  683. God and

  684. shuns

  685. evil.

  686. Does Job

  687. fear God

  688. for nothing?

  689. Satan

  690. replied.

  691. Have you

  692. not put a

  693. hedge around

  694. him and

  695. his household

  696. and everything

  697. he has?

  698. You have

  699. blessed the

  700. work of

  701. his hands

  702. so that

  703. his flocks

  704. and his

  705. herds are

  706. spread

  707. throughout

  708. the

  709. land.

  710. You see,

  711. anyone will

  712. love God,

  713. or the

  714. only reason

  715. that Job

  716. seeks good,

  717. the only

  718. reason that

  719. Job loves

  720. God,

  721. the only

  722. reason that

  723. Job hates

  724. evil is

  725. because he's

  726. wealthy and

  727. healthy.

  728. Do something

  729. to him,

  730. verse 11,

  731. stretch out

  732. your hands

  733. and strike

  734. everything he

  735. has and

  736. he will

  737. surely curse

  738. you to

  739. your face.

  740. You see,

  741. saying anybody

  742. will love

  743. God,

  744. any one of

  745. us will

  746. be a

  747. Christian,

  748. if everything

  749. in their

  750. life is a

  751. bed of

  752. roses.

  753. But if

  754. you throw

  755. in a

  756. few

  757. thorns,

  758. then that

  759. will soon

  760. sort out

  761. who is a

  762. genuine

  763. believer.

  764. Go on,

  765. God,

  766. make something

  767. bad happen,

  768. make him

  769. suffer,

  770. and then

  771. you'll soon

  772. see that

  773. he is

  774. nothing more

  775. than a

  776. fake.

  777. Without a

  778. doubt,

  779. Satan is

  780. real.

  781. His

  782. influence

  783. is real.

  784. And we

  785. should never

  786. minimize his

  787. desire and

  788. his effort to

  789. keep people

  790. from God

  791. and to

  792. turn people

  793. away from

  794. God.

  795. He is

  796. God's

  797. enemy and

  798. he's our

  799. enemy.

  800. But we

  801. should never

  802. think that

  803. he has the

  804. power over

  805. God or

  806. that he has

  807. control over

  808. the world.

  809. The story

  810. of Job does

  811. not allow us

  812. to let Satan

  813. be the

  814. boss.

  815. Look at

  816. what happens

  817. in this

  818. conversation.

  819. It's all

  820. happening in

  821. the control

  822. room of

  823. power.

  824. Look at

  825. verse 6

  826. again.

  827. The angels

  828. were told

  829. and Satan

  830. come to

  831. present

  832. themselves

  833. before God.

  834. It's like

  835. they've been

  836. summoned to

  837. report their

  838. activities to

  839. the Almighty,

  840. to the one

  841. who's in

  842. control.

  843. Even Satan

  844. knows who

  845. is in

  846. control.

  847. Look down

  848. at verse

  849. 11.

  850. He says,

  851. but stretch

  852. out your

  853. hand and

  854. strike

  855. everything

  856. he has.

  857. Satan

  858. knows he

  859. can do

  860. nothing on

  861. his own.

  862. He hasn't

  863. got the

  864. power to

  865. do as

  866. he pleases.

  867. He has

  868. to ask

  869. God to

  870. stretch

  871. out his

  872. hand.

  873. Verse 12.

  874. The Lord

  875. said to

  876. Satan,

  877. very well

  878. then,

  879. everything

  880. he has

  881. is in

  882. your hands.

  883. God,

  884. with absolute

  885. power and

  886. supreme

  887. authority,

  888. allows

  889. Satan to

  890. bring

  891. suffering

  892. into this

  893. man's

  894. life.

  895. But there

  896. is a

  897. boundary.

  898. Look at

  899. the rest

  900. of verse

  901. 12.

  902. But on

  903. this man

  904. himself,

  905. do not

  906. lay a

  907. finger.

  908. It's

  909. repeated

  910. again in

  911. chapter 2.

  912. There's

  913. almost the

  914. identical

  915. same

  916. scene.

  917. They come

  918. before God,

  919. present

  920. themselves.

  921. Look at

  922. verse 6.

  923. Satan has

  924. come again

  925. asking for

  926. more

  927. suffering.

  928. The Lord

  929. said to

  930. Satan,

  931. verse 6,

  932. very well

  933. then,

  934. he is in

  935. your hands,

  936. but you

  937. must spare

  938. his life.

  939. So Satan

  940. went out

  941. from the

  942. presence of

  943. the Lord

  944. and afflicted

  945. Job with

  946. painful sores

  947. from the

  948. soles of

  949. his feet

  950. to the

  951. top of

  952. his head.

  953. Satan

  954. is real,

  955. but he

  956. is under

  957. the control

  958. of God.

  959. It's

  960. like if we

  961. could imagine

  962. it like

  963. this,

  964. that Satan

  965. is on a

  966. leash,

  967. he's on

  968. a lead,

  969. he's tied.

  970. Yes,

  971. he has

  972. influence,

  973. but he

  974. does not

  975. have free

  976. reign to

  977. do what

  978. he pleases

  979. when he

  980. pleases.

  981. The story

  982. of Job

  983. makes it

  984. crystal clear

  985. that this

  986. is God's

  987. world and

  988. he is the

  989. one who

  990. remains in

  991. charge.

  992. sin.

  993. So signpost

  994. one, there

  995. is such a

  996. thing as

  997. innocent

  998. suffering.

  999. Signpost

  1000. two, there

  1001. is satanic

  1002. influence, but

  1003. he does not

  1004. have control.

  1005. And the

  1006. third signpost

  1007. is this,

  1008. divine sovereignty

  1009. or sovereign

  1010. control.

  1011. God is

  1012. powerful,

  1013. but lets

  1014. people suffer.

  1015. You see,

  1016. despite all

  1017. the suffering,

  1018. God holds

  1019. sovereign

  1020. control.

  1021. Nowhere are

  1022. we ever to

  1023. think that

  1024. this world

  1025. is in

  1026. freefall,

  1027. that it's

  1028. some kind

  1029. of avalanche

  1030. that nobody

  1031. can stop,

  1032. or that

  1033. somehow Satan

  1034. is this force

  1035. that God

  1036. is struggling

  1037. to cope

  1038. with,

  1039. trying to

  1040. come up

  1041. with plan

  1042. B and

  1043. plan C.

  1044. In fact,

  1045. the opposite

  1046. is true.

  1047. Behind all

  1048. the suffering

  1049. that is

  1050. going on

  1051. stands God

  1052. who remains

  1053. firmly in

  1054. charge of

  1055. Job's life,

  1056. of your

  1057. life,

  1058. of my

  1059. life,

  1060. over Satan

  1061. and the

  1062. world in

  1063. which we

  1064. live.

  1065. In fact,

  1066. the big

  1067. shock and

  1068. the big

  1069. struggle and

  1070. the big

  1071. difficulty

  1072. for us

  1073. is that

  1074. God,

  1075. who is

  1076. all-loving

  1077. and all-powerful,

  1078. allows

  1079. innocent

  1080. people

  1081. to suffer.

  1082. Look at

  1083. how this

  1084. has worked

  1085. out.

  1086. God

  1087. initiates

  1088. Job's

  1089. test.

  1090. Look at

  1091. verse 8

  1092. of chapter

  1093. 1.

  1094. Then the

  1095. Lord said

  1096. to Satan,

  1097. have you

  1098. considered

  1099. my servant

  1100. Job?

  1101. You see,

  1102. it's not

  1103. Satan who

  1104. picks on

  1105. Job.

  1106. It is

  1107. God who

  1108. brings

  1109. his faithful

  1110. servant

  1111. Job

  1112. to Satan's

  1113. attention.

  1114. To God,

  1115. Job is

  1116. special.

  1117. He calls

  1118. him a

  1119. servant.

  1120. It's a

  1121. title.

  1122. The same

  1123. title that

  1124. were given

  1125. to great

  1126. men of

  1127. honour like

  1128. Abraham and

  1129. Moses.

  1130. The same

  1131. title that

  1132. was given

  1133. to Jesus

  1134. Christ.

  1135. So there's

  1136. no animosity

  1137. between God

  1138. and Job.

  1139. God loves

  1140. him.

  1141. He treasures

  1142. him.

  1143. He cares

  1144. for him.

  1145. But yet

  1146. God takes

  1147. this initiative.

  1148. Have you

  1149. considered

  1150. my servant

  1151. Job?

  1152. Job?

  1153. Job.

  1154. Job.

  1155. Job.

  1156. Job.

  1157. Job.

  1158. Job.

  1159. Job.

  1160. Job.

  1161. Job.

  1162. Job.

  1163. Job.

  1164. Job.

  1165. Job.

  1166. Job.

  1167. But then

  1168. God also

  1169. permits

  1170. Job's

  1171. suffering.

  1172. Verse 12.

  1173. The Lord

  1174. said to

  1175. Satan,

  1176. Very well

  1177. then,

  1178. everything he

  1179. has is

  1180. in your

  1181. hands,

  1182. but on

  1183. the man

  1184. himself do

  1185. not lay

  1186. a finger.

  1187. Satan

  1188. knows who's

  1189. in control.

  1190. That's why

  1191. he had to

  1192. first ask

  1193. God,

  1194. for God

  1195. to stretch

  1196. out his

  1197. hand.

  1198. But in

  1199. what is

  1200. perhaps the

  1201. most

  1202. surprising

  1203. and shocking

  1204. response

  1205. in the

  1206. whole of

  1207. the story

  1208. of the

  1209. Bible,

  1210. God

  1211. turns

  1212. Satan's

  1213. desire

  1214. back to

  1215. Satan

  1216. and gives

  1217. him

  1218. permission

  1219. to inflict

  1220. suffering.

  1221. It's not

  1222. that God

  1223. is standing

  1224. idly by

  1225. with his

  1226. hands tied

  1227. behind his

  1228. back.

  1229. No,

  1230. he's

  1231. involved,

  1232. he gives

  1233. permission

  1234. for this

  1235. awful

  1236. suffering

  1237. that

  1238. follows.

  1239. And if

  1240. that is

  1241. not shocking

  1242. enough,

  1243. and it

  1244. should

  1245. outrage

  1246. us,

  1247. Satan

  1248. comes a

  1249. second time

  1250. to God.

  1251. Look at

  1252. chapter 2,

  1253. verse 3.

  1254. The Lord

  1255. said to

  1256. Satan,

  1257. Have you

  1258. considered

  1259. my servant

  1260. Job?

  1261. There is

  1262. no one on

  1263. earth like

  1264. him.

  1265. He is

  1266. blameless

  1267. and upright,

  1268. a man who

  1269. fears God

  1270. and shuns

  1271. evil,

  1272. and he

  1273. still maintains

  1274. his integrity,

  1275. though you

  1276. incited me

  1277. against him

  1278. to ruin

  1279. him without

  1280. any reason.

  1281. Skin for

  1282. skin,

  1283. Satan replied.

  1284. A man will

  1285. give all he

  1286. has for his

  1287. own life,

  1288. but stretch

  1289. out your

  1290. hands and

  1291. strike his

  1292. flesh and

  1293. bones,

  1294. and he

  1295. will surely

  1296. curse you

  1297. to your

  1298. face.

  1299. You see,

  1300. at this

  1301. point we

  1302. would think

  1303. God would

  1304. say,

  1305. no,

  1306. that's it,

  1307. stop,

  1308. enough is

  1309. enough.

  1310. There's been

  1311. enough suffering

  1312. in this

  1313. man's life,

  1314. there's going

  1315. to be no

  1316. more.

  1317. But to

  1318. our shocking

  1319. surprise,

  1320. God gives

  1321. Satan

  1322. permission

  1323. again,

  1324. verse 6.

  1325. Then the

  1326. Lord said

  1327. to Satan,

  1328. very well

  1329. then,

  1330. he is

  1331. in your

  1332. hands,

  1333. but you

  1334. must spare

  1335. his life.

  1336. You see,

  1337. everything

  1338. within us

  1339. screams

  1340. that this

  1341. can't be

  1342. true.

  1343. I want

  1344. to rip

  1345. those verses

  1346. out of

  1347. the Bible.

  1348. I don't

  1349. want to

  1350. read them

  1351. because I

  1352. don't like

  1353. them.

  1354. I find

  1355. it too

  1356. hard to

  1357. come to

  1358. terms with

  1359. because the

  1360. God that I

  1361. know is

  1362. loving and

  1363. compassionate

  1364. and in my

  1365. thinking he

  1366. would never

  1367. take initiative

  1368. and he

  1369. would never

  1370. give permission

  1371. for such

  1372. terrible

  1373. suffering to

  1374. happen to

  1375. innocent people.

  1376. The man is

  1377. blameless,

  1378. people are

  1379. blameless,

  1380. he's done

  1381. nothing wrong,

  1382. how can we

  1383. say that

  1384. God is

  1385. behind all

  1386. of this?

  1387. It raises

  1388. lots of

  1389. questions and

  1390. there's no way

  1391. that we're

  1392. going to

  1393. answer all

  1394. of that.

  1395. That's why

  1396. we're going

  1397. to take

  1398. our time

  1399. over these

  1400. coming weeks

  1401. to work

  1402. through it,

  1403. to battle

  1404. with it,

  1405. to deal

  1406. with it.

  1407. But at

  1408. this point

  1409. let me

  1410. say that

  1411. as far

  1412. as this

  1413. story so

  1414. far,

  1415. the story

  1416. of Job

  1417. tells us

  1418. that God

  1419. stands behind

  1420. all good

  1421. and behind

  1422. all evil.

  1423. But God

  1424. is never

  1425. ever charged

  1426. with wrong

  1427. doing.

  1428. He's never

  1429. charged with

  1430. doing anything

  1431. wrong.

  1432. He's not

  1433. vindictive.

  1434. But he

  1435. stands behind

  1436. it as the

  1437. one who's

  1438. in control

  1439. and as

  1440. mysterious

  1441. as it

  1442. is for

  1443. us to

  1444. try and

  1445. comprehend,

  1446. we are

  1447. left to

  1448. conclude at

  1449. this point

  1450. in the

  1451. story

  1452. that God

  1453. is in

  1454. control.

  1455. He's in

  1456. control of

  1457. the world.

  1458. He's in

  1459. control of

  1460. your life.

  1461. He's in

  1462. control of

  1463. my life.

  1464. He's in

  1465. control of

  1466. everything.

  1467. everything.

  1468. So how

  1469. do we

  1470. respond?

  1471. Well,

  1472. Job's

  1473. response

  1474. helps us.

  1475. Look at

  1476. verse 20

  1477. of chapter

  1478. 1.

  1479. Let's

  1480. try and put

  1481. ourselves in

  1482. this man's

  1483. shoes and

  1484. all that he

  1485. has lost

  1486. and the

  1487. suffering that

  1488. has come

  1489. his way,

  1490. verse 20.

  1491. How does

  1492. he respond?

  1493. At this,

  1494. Job got

  1495. up and

  1496. he tore

  1497. his robe

  1498. and he

  1499. shaved his

  1500. head and

  1501. then he

  1502. fell to

  1503. the ground

  1504. in worship.

  1505. He doesn't

  1506. understand his

  1507. suffering.

  1508. He has no

  1509. answers.

  1510. He has no

  1511. reasons.

  1512. He simply

  1513. responds with

  1514. worship.

  1515. He's not

  1516. jumping up

  1517. around the

  1518. place,

  1519. jumping up

  1520. and down,

  1521. singing happy

  1522. songs.

  1523. That's not

  1524. what it

  1525. means.

  1526. He fell

  1527. to the

  1528. ground in

  1529. worship.

  1530. It means

  1531. that he

  1532. just fell

  1533. down and

  1534. submitted

  1535. himself to

  1536. God.

  1537. He bows

  1538. down to

  1539. one who

  1540. does know

  1541. and one

  1542. who we

  1543. can trust

  1544. in every

  1545. circumstance

  1546. of life.

  1547. And then

  1548. he says,

  1549. verse 21,

  1550. the well-known

  1551. words,

  1552. naked I

  1553. came from

  1554. my mother's

  1555. womb,

  1556. naked I

  1557. shall

  1558. depart.

  1559. The Lord

  1560. gave and

  1561. the Lord

  1562. has taken

  1563. away.

  1564. May the

  1565. name of

  1566. the Lord

  1567. be praised.

  1568. Do you

  1569. notice that

  1570. Job attributes

  1571. all the

  1572. good in

  1573. his life

  1574. and all

  1575. the suffering

  1576. in his

  1577. life,

  1578. not to

  1579. Satan,

  1580. but to

  1581. God.

  1582. we sang

  1583. it earlier,

  1584. these very

  1585. words,

  1586. the Lord

  1587. gave and

  1588. the Lord

  1589. has taken

  1590. away.

  1591. Blessed

  1592. be the

  1593. name of

  1594. the Lord.

  1595. Verse 22,

  1596. in all

  1597. this,

  1598. Job did

  1599. not sin

  1600. by charging

  1601. God with

  1602. wrongdoing.

  1603. Job longs

  1604. for answers

  1605. as we will

  1606. see as we

  1607. read through,

  1608. and we

  1609. desperately

  1610. want answers.

  1611. But before

  1612. we can move

  1613. on and start

  1614. addressing some

  1615. of those,

  1616. we've got to

  1617. stop.

  1618. We've got to

  1619. stop and

  1620. worship.

  1621. To learn to

  1622. trust God

  1623. like Job

  1624. and not

  1625. curse God

  1626. like his

  1627. wife.

  1628. Look at

  1629. chapter 2,

  1630. verse 9.

  1631. His wife

  1632. said to him,

  1633. are you still

  1634. holding on to

  1635. your integrity?

  1636. Curse God

  1637. and die.

  1638. He replied,

  1639. you are

  1640. talking like

  1641. a foolish

  1642. woman.

  1643. Shall we

  1644. accept good

  1645. from God

  1646. and not

  1647. trouble?

  1648. In all

  1649. this,

  1650. Job did

  1651. not sin

  1652. in what

  1653. he said.

  1654. There's

  1655. no quick

  1656. fixes.

  1657. There's

  1658. no pat

  1659. answers.

  1660. And if

  1661. we are to

  1662. live in a

  1663. suffering

  1664. world,

  1665. we must

  1666. stop

  1667. to worship.

  1668. to bow

  1669. down with

  1670. all of our

  1671. questions that

  1672. we have

  1673. right now

  1674. and submit

  1675. to our

  1676. God,

  1677. who is

  1678. loving and

  1679. compassionate,

  1680. who is

  1681. powerful and

  1682. sovereign,

  1683. and kneel

  1684. before him

  1685. and say

  1686. with all of

  1687. our struggles

  1688. that you

  1689. are God

  1690. and I

  1691. am not.

  1692. Amen.

  1693. I'd like

  1694. us to

  1695. turn to

  1696. Psalm

  1697. 13.

  1698. Rather

  1699. than sing,

  1700. I think

  1701. it's hard

  1702. to sing

  1703. sometimes.

  1704. It's not

  1705. always appropriate

  1706. to sing.

  1707. but we're

  1708. going to

  1709. read a

  1710. psalm that

  1711. perhaps helps

  1712. us to

  1713. express

  1714. some of

  1715. the things

  1716. that we've

  1717. been looking

  1718. at.

  1719. Psalm

  1720. 13.

  1721. I'm going

  1722. to read

  1723. verses 1

  1724. and 2

  1725. and then

  1726. I'd like

  1727. us all

  1728. together to

  1729. read verses

  1730. 3 to

  1731. 6.

  1732. Psalm

  1733. 13.

  1734. 13.

  1735. The first

  1736. part is

  1737. just simply

  1738. an expression

  1739. of the

  1740. questions

  1741. of why.

  1742. But then

  1743. as we get

  1744. into it

  1745. then there's

  1746. this trust

  1747. in verse

  1748. 5.

  1749. I will

  1750. trust in

  1751. your unfailing

  1752. love.

  1753. So let me

  1754. read verses

  1755. 1 to 2

  1756. then you

  1757. respond by

  1758. reading verses

  1759. 3 to 6

  1760. out loud

  1761. and then

  1762. we'll just

  1763. simply have

  1764. a moment's

  1765. quietness

  1766. to reflect.

  1767. How long

  1768. O Lord

  1769. will you

  1770. forget me

  1771. forever?

  1772. How long

  1773. will you

  1774. hide your

  1775. faith from

  1776. me?

  1777. How long

  1778. must I

  1779. wrestle with

  1780. my thoughts

  1781. and every

  1782. day have

  1783. sorrow

  1784. in my

  1785. heart?

  1786. how long

  1787. will my

  1788. enemy

  1789. triumph

  1790. over me?

  1791. Look on

  1792. me and

  1793. answer

  1794. O Lord

  1795. my God

  1796. give light

  1797. to my

  1798. eyes

  1799. or I

  1800. will sleep

  1801. in death

  1802. my enemy

  1803. will say

  1804. I have

  1805. overcome

  1806. him

  1807. and my

  1808. foes

  1809. will rejoice

  1810. when I

  1811. fall

  1812. but I

  1813. trust in

  1814. your

  1815. unfailing

  1816. love

  1817. my heart

  1818. rejoices

  1819. in your

  1820. salvation

  1821. I

  1822. will sing

  1823. to the

  1824. Lord

  1825. for he

  1826. has been

  1827. good to

  1828. me

  1829. let's just

  1830. take a

  1831. moment's

  1832. quietness

  1833. to reflect

  1834. Lord

  1835. holy

  1836. safe

  1837. and

  1838. have

  1839. tears

  1840. to the

  1841. you

  1842. .

  1843. pro

  1844. Thank you.

  1845. Thank you.

  1846. Thank you.

  1847. Thank you.

  1848. Thank you.

  1849. Thank you.

  1850. Thank you.

  1851. Thank you.

  1852. Thank you.

  1853. Thank you.

  1854. Everything is possible.

1855. God at that moment could have come to Jesus and said, enough is enough.

1856. We won't go through this suffering.

  1857. Everything is possible.

1858. But then he says, yet not what I will, but what you will.

1859. The cross reminds us that God plans suffering for himself so that we might live.

1860. And with absolute control, God in Christ suffered for you and for me.

1861. Jesus submitted himself to the Father and Jesus on the cross drinks the cup of suffering.

1862. He takes the wrath of God on himself for my sin, for your sin.

1863. He takes the judgment of God.

1864. He experiences hell, the ultimate suffering, on himself so that we don't have to.

1865. God planned suffering for himself so that we might escape the greatest suffering.

1866. And that's what we celebrate here with the bread and the wine.

1867. The simple meal, Jesus took bread and broachers and gave it to his disciples.

1868. And he said, you have to do this in remembrance of me.

1869. God will not suffer anything from himself so that we might escape the most of you.

1870. And the bread and the wine after I make is full of me.

1871. Just in his mind, reflect on what Christ has done to me and to me.

1872. And then we will continue.

  1873. Amen.

  1874. Amen.

  1875. Amen.

  1876. Amen.

  1877. Amen.

  1878. Amen.

  1879. Amen.

1880. And Christ was in the garden.

  1881. And he prayed.

1882. he cried out that if possible the suffering would pass but not my will but

1883. your will be done and in his submission he suffered on the cross for you and for

1884. me so that we might have life and the promise
