  1. Thank you.

  2. Now I am going to him who sent me, yet none of you asks me, where are you going?

  3. Because I have said these things, you are filled with grief.

  4. But I tell you the truth, it is for your good that I am going away.

  5. Unless I go away, the counselor will not come to you, but if I go, I will send him to you.

  6. When he comes, he will convict the world of guilt in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment.

  7. In regard to sin, because men do not believe in me.

  8. In regard to righteousness, because I am going to the Father where you can see me no longer.

  9. And in regard to judgment, because the prince of this world now stands condemned.

  10. And can you turn to Acts 2, verse 22, page 1098.

    Acts 2:22

  11. Acts 2, verse 22.

    Acts 2:22

  12. Men of Israel, listen to this.

  13. Jesus of Nazareth was a man accredited by God to you by miracles, wonders and signs which God did among you through him, as you yourself know.

  14. This man was handed over to you by God's set purpose and foreknowledge.

  15. And you, with the help of wicked men, put him to death by nailing him to the cross.

  16. But God raised him from the dead, freeing him from the agony of death, because it was impossible for death to keep its hold on him.

  17. David said about him,

  18. I saw the Lord always before me, because he is at my right hand.

  19. I will not be shaken.

  20. Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices.

  21. My body also will live in hope, because you will not abandon me to the grave, nor will you let your Holy One see decay.

  22. You have made known to me the paths of life.

  23. You will fill me with joy in your presence.

  24. Brothers, I can tell you confidently that the patriarch David died and was buried, and his tomb is here to this day.

  25. But he was a prophet, and knew that God had promised him on oath that he would place one of his descendants on his throne.

  26. Seeing what was ahead, he spoke of the resurrection of the Christ, that he was not abandoned to the grave, nor did his body see decay.

  27. God has raised this Jesus to life, and we are all witnesses of the fact.

  28. Exalted to the right hand of God, he has received from the Father the promised Holy Spirit, and has poured out what you now see and hear.

  29. For David did not ascend to heaven, and yet he said,

  30. The Lord said to my Lord, Sit at my right hand, until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet.

  31. Therefore let all Israel be assured of this.

  32. God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ.

  33. When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the other apostles,

  34. Brothers, what shall we do?

  35. Peter replied, Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ, for the forgiveness of your sins.

  36. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

  37. The promise is for you and your children, and for all who are far off, for all whom the Lord your God will call.

  38. With many other words he warned them, and he pleaded with them,

  39. Save yourselves from this corrupt generation.

  40. Those who accepted this message were baptized, and about 3,000 were added to their number that day.

  41. Thanks very much.

  42. Well, keep your Bibles open there at those passages.

  43. Michael's going to come now and speak.

  44. As he's doing that, I'm going to hand out pens,

  45. so if you want to take notes and use the back of your new sheet for that, you can do that.

  46. I think most of you know who Michael is.

  47. I know him a little bit.

  48. He probably knows me a lot more.

  49. Yes.

  50. There we go.

  51. Good to have you today.

  52. Thank you.

  53. Thanks.

  54. Thanks.

  55. It is good to be here.

  56. I was looking at your notes before that I was the father of a well-known local pastor.

  57. I know myself.

  58. I don't know who the other fellow is.

  59. But it is good to be back with you once again in Carragalline.

  60. And we want to talk about the Holy Spirit's work this morning.

  61. And so, as we've been reminded, have your Bibles open at those two passages that we read.

  62. How do you do that?

  63. Well, for some means, I'm sure you can think of, as we'll be referring to both of these passages

  64. we go through the message this morning.

  65. Let's begin with a question.

  66. What is the principal work of the Holy Spirit?

  67. I wonder how you would answer that particular question.

  68. What is the principal work of the Holy Spirit?

  69. Last week I was at a very charismatic church, and I'm sure they would have said something like this,

  70. miraculous power of the Spirit.

  71. And they would think of miracles performed in the power of the Spirit.

  72. But is that the principal work of the Holy Spirit?

  73. Some people would say, yes, gifts are the principal work of the Holy Spirit.

  74. But that isn't the answer that the Scriptures give.

  75. If you look at John chapter 16 and verse 14, you read these words.

    John 16 chapter mention

  76. He, that is the Holy Spirit, the Counselor, the Comforter,

  77. He will bring glory to me by taking from it what is mine and making it known to you.

  78. The principal work of the Holy Spirit is to make known the Lord Jesus Christ.

  79. That is His work.

  80. If somebody fill with the Holy Spirit, then they will want to testify to the Lord Jesus Christ.

  81. One has said that speaking of the Holy Spirit, He has as His supreme mission,

  82. the glorifying of the Lord Jesus Christ.

  83. And I think we all this morning are conscious of the fact that we need the Holy Spirit

  84. to work in our lives and our individual lives.

  85. But what will that mean?

  86. Well, it will mean, of course, a likeness to the Lord Jesus Christ.

  87. It will begin to take on the family likeness.

  88. There will be that fruit of the Spirit that is evident in our lives.

  89. We will give the Lord Jesus the honour that is due to His holy name.

  90. We will be ready to be submissive to His every command.

  91. And the Lord Jesus will be glorified because the Holy Spirit is at work in our lives.

  92. If we think of the church, what will it mean for the church to be filled with the Spirit?

  93. Well, there will be a greater awareness of the Lord Jesus as we come together to worship.

  94. The fruit of the Spirit, again, will be in evidence among us.

  95. We will not be able to do anything else but love each other

  96. because the love of Christ has been shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Spirit.

  97. The Lord Jesus will be honoured as we speak,

  98. as we converse,

  99. as we testify one to another of His goodness in our lives.

  100. So, as individuals, we will be affected.

  101. As a church, we will be affected.

  102. But also, there will be an effect on the community in which we live

  103. because we will want to be witnesses to the Lord Jesus Christ.

  104. We will be witnesses, of course, in the way that we live.

  105. We will be witnesses in the way that we speak.

  106. Our conversation will testify of Him who was crucified,

  107. who rose from the dead,

  108. and who ascended into glory.

  109. We will not be able to be silent.

  110. The Holy Spirit is so necessary.

  111. It is He that gives us new birth.

  112. It is He that gives us new life.

  113. But that new life is in Christ.

  114. Now, the promise of John 16 and verse 7

  115. is, I will send Him to you.

  116. And when He comes,

  117. He will do certain things

  118. that will bring glory to the Lord Jesus Christ.

  119. And those verses that were read, first of all,

  120. from John chapter 16 and verses 8 to 11

    John 16 chapter mention

  121. are the verses that we're going to be looking at.

  122. But we're going to be looking at them

  123. in the light of Acts chapter 2.

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  124. Because I would believe that

  125. Acts chapter 2 is a commentary, if you like,

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  126. of what the Lord is saying in Acts chapter 16.

    Acts 16 chapter mention

  127. When the Holy Spirit comes,

  128. this will happen.

  129. And on the day of Pentecost,

  130. it did happen.

  131. So let's look at this passage together.

  132. And the first thing that we will notice is this.

  133. That the Holy Spirit will convict men of sin

  134. that they might turn to the Lord Jesus Christ.

  135. Look at verse 8.

  136. When He comes,

  137. He will convict the world of guilt

  138. in regard to sin.

  139. And then in verse 9,

  140. there's an explanation of that.

  141. In regard to sin,

  142. because men do not believe in me.

  143. What was the principal sin

  144. that was identified on the day of Pentecost?

  145. That one sin,

  146. that great sin which embraces all other sins.

  147. Well, this sin that men and women

  148. do not believe in the Lord Jesus Christ.

  149. It is the sin of unbelief.

  150. And in Acts 2,

  151. the Holy Spirit that had been promised comes.

  152. And Peter preaches in the power of the Spirit.

  153. He's speaking, remember,

  154. to people who had witnessed the miracles.

  155. People who had had ample opportunity

  156. to see that God had sent His Son into the world.

  157. But they did not believe.

  158. Hear Peter in Acts 2 and verse 22.

  159. Men of Israel,

  160. listen to this.

  161. Jesus of Nazareth

  162. was a man accredited by God to you

  163. by miracles, wonders, and signs

  164. which God did among you

  165. through Him

  166. as you yourself know.

  167. Those miracles,

  168. those signs,

  169. those wonders,

  170. they were not done in the corner.

  171. People spoke about them.

  172. It was evident

  173. that there was someone different among them.

  174. But they did not believe.

  175. And the Holy Spirit,

  176. on the day of Pentecost,

  177. speaking through the mouth of Peter,

  178. was witness for the prosecution.

  179. He was exposing unbelieving hearts.

  180. Of course,

  181. unbelief

  182. had been apparent

  183. all through the ministry

  184. of the Lord Jesus.

  185. It had been demonstrated

  186. in different ways,

  187. but it was unbelief

  188. nonetheless.

  189. If you think of His birth,

  190. remember the wise men

  191. arrive at the palace

  192. of Herod.

  193. And what does Herod do?

  194. Well, he calls the wise men

  195. and they look up the

  196. Holy Scriptures.

  197. They look up the Word of God.

  198. Where is this new king

  199. to be born?

  200. Well, it's in Bethlehem.

  201. It says in Micah,

    Micah 5 chapter mention

  202. chapter 5,

  203. and verse 2.

  204. But what does Herod do?

  205. He tries to murder him.

  206. He was a king

  207. who couldn't accept any other.

  208. So it was a sin of unbelief.

  209. He rejected the one

  210. that had been promised.

  211. As we see the Lord Jesus

  212. in His unfolding ministry,

  213. we read in John,

    John 7 chapter mention

  214. chapter 7,

  215. and verse 5,

  216. even His own brothers

  217. did not believe in Him.

  218. Initially,

  219. He had a great following.

  220. But if we look at Acts,

    Acts 6 chapter mention

  221. chapter 6,

  222. we're told that many

  223. of His people,

  224. many of those

  225. who claimed to be

  226. His disciples,

  227. did not follow Him.

  228. They did not continue

  229. with Him.

  230. He told them that His,

  231. He offered them

  232. living bread.

  233. This bread,

  234. He said,

  235. is my flesh,

  236. which I will give

  237. for the life of the world.

  238. But they turned away from Him.

  239. They turned away

  240. in unbelief.

  241. And the comment

  242. that is given

  243. in Acts,

  244. in John,

    John 6 chapter mention

  245. chapter 6,

  246. and verse 64,

  247. Jesus had known

  248. from the beginning

  249. which of them

  250. did not believe

  251. and who would

  252. betray Him.

  253. So there was this

  254. constant rejection,

  255. this constant

  256. unbelief.

  257. And this unbelief

  258. reached its climax,

  259. of course,

  260. in the crucifixion

  261. of Jesus.

  262. And we see

  263. the heinousness

  264. of sin.

  265. Jesus, of course,

  266. had referred to it

  267. in the parable

  268. of the vineyard.

  269. How servants

  270. had been sent.

  271. How they'd been

  272. ill-treated,

  273. abused,

  274. and some of them

  275. killed.

  276. Last of all,

  277. the son

  278. of the owner

  279. of the vineyard

  280. was sent.

  281. But they

  282. murdered him.

  283. And empowered

  284. by the Spirit,

  285. on the day

  286. of Pentecost,

  287. Peter drives

  288. it home.

  289. You,

  290. he says,

  291. no one else,

  292. you,

  293. have been

  294. responsible.

  295. And with the

  296. help of wicked

  297. men,

  298. put him to death,

  299. nailing him

  300. to the cross.

  301. But let all

  302. Israel be

  303. assured of this.

  304. God has made

  305. this Jesus

  306. whom you

  307. crucified,

  308. both Lord

  309. and Christ.

  310. Here's the result

  311. of your

  312. unbelieving hearts.

  313. You have

  314. crucified

  315. the Lord

  316. of glory.

  317. You

  318. have taken

  319. the hammer

  320. and put

  321. those nails

  322. into his hands

  323. and into his feet.

  324. you have jammed

  325. that crown

  326. of thorns

  327. upon his head

  328. and you did it

  329. because of your

  330. unbelieving hearts.

  331. And as the

  332. Holy Spirit

  333. worked

  334. and testified

  335. to what they

  336. had done

  337. to the Lord

  338. Jesus Christ,

  339. the people

  340. were affected.

  341. Sin that

  342. had been

  343. identified

  344. led that

  345. day to the

  346. salvation

  347. of many.

  348. The Holy

  349. Spirit

  350. convinced

  351. three

  352. thousand

  353. on the

  354. day of

  355. Pentecost

  356. that they

  357. did not

  358. believe in

  359. Jesus.

  360. They were,

  361. as we are

  362. told in Acts

  363. 2,

  364. cut to

  365. the heart.

  366. They cried

  367. out

  368. because they

  369. saw the

  370. awfulness

  371. of the

  372. sin of

  373. unbelief.

  374. What

  375. shall we

  376. do?

  377. And the

  378. answer comes

  379. back clearly,

  380. repent

  381. and be

  382. baptized

  383. every one

  384. of you

  385. in the

  386. name of

  387. Jesus

  388. Christ

  389. for the

  390. forgiveness

  391. of sin.

  392. The Holy

  393. Spirit

  394. convicted

  395. men of

  396. their sin,

  397. the sin

  398. of unbelief,

  399. that they

  400. might turn

  401. to the

  402. Lord Jesus

  403. Christ in

  404. belief.

  405. Let me ask

  406. you the

  407. question this

  408. morning.

  409. Do you

  410. know the

  411. work of

  412. the Holy

  413. Spirit in

  414. your heart

  415. convicting

  416. you of

  417. the sin

  418. of

  419. unbelief?

  420. Are you

  421. convicted

  422. of your

  423. rejection

  424. of the

  425. one who

  426. performed

  427. those signs

  428. and wonders?

  429. Are you

  430. convicted

  431. of your

  432. unbelief?

  433. Oh, so

  434. many today

  435. say, I

  436. believe in

  437. Jesus.

  438. I believe

  439. he was a

  440. historical

  441. character.

  442. I was

  443. listening to

  444. an interview

  445. coming over

  446. today of

  447. two sisters.

  448. They were

  449. religious.

  450. Oh, yes, if

  451. you asked

  452. them, did

  453. they believe

  454. in Jesus,

  455. they would

  456. have said

  457. yes.

  458. But do

  459. they believe

  460. in him in

  461. the sense

  462. that they've

  463. turned from

  464. their sin to

  465. the only way

  466. of salvation

  467. in the

  468. Lord Jesus

  469. Christ?

  470. Christ.

  471. You can't

  472. sit on the

  473. fence as

  474. far as

  475. these things

  476. are concerned,

  477. can you?

  478. Remember

  479. those words

  480. of Jesus

  481. in John

  482. 3 and

  483. verse 18,

  484. whoever

  485. believes in

  486. him is

  487. not condemned,

  488. but whoever

  489. does not

  490. believe stands

  491. condemned

  492. already because

  493. he has not

  494. believed in

  495. the name of

  496. God's one

  497. and only

  498. Son.

  499. So we

  500. see on the

  501. day of

  502. Pentecost,

  503. the Holy

  504. Spirit

  505. brought glory

  506. to the

  507. Lord Jesus

  508. Christ as

  509. 3,000 people

  510. vowed their

  511. knees to

  512. the King

  513. of Kings

  514. and Lord

  515. of Lords.

  516. How we

  517. need the

  518. Holy Spirit

  519. in our

  520. own lives,

  521. how the

  522. community in

  523. which we

  524. find ourselves

  525. needs to

  526. know something

  527. of the

  528. work of

  529. the Holy

  530. Spirit

  531. that they

  532. too might

  533. be convicted

  534. of sin.

  535. For a time

  536. I was in

  537. membership in a

  538. church in

  539. the north of

  540. Ireland and

  541. there was a

  542. man who used

  543. to pray.

  544. He's now in

  545. heaven enjoying

  546. his reward,

  547. but he used

  548. to have a

  549. very quaint

  550. prayers and

  551. one of his

  552. prayers was

  553. this,

  554. bless those

  555. who are

  556. sick of

  557. our

  558. fellowship.

  559. Well, we

  560. knew what

  561. he meant.

  562. But, you

  563. know, another

  564. thing that he

  565. used to

  566. pray was

  567. this,

  568. Lord, you

  569. know, we

  570. cannot raise

  571. an anxious

  572. thought.

  573. And we

  574. can speak

  575. to people,

  576. we can

  577. testify to

  578. people,

  579. but oh,

  580. it needs the

  581. Holy Spirit

  582. to come

  583. upon them

  584. that they

  585. might have

  586. that anxious

  587. thought and

  588. that they

  589. might turn

  590. to the

  591. Lord Jesus

  592. Christ in

  593. repentance

  594. and faith.

  595. Let's pray

  596. for our

  597. community

  598. that as we

  599. witness, the

  600. Holy Spirit

  601. will take our

  602. words and

  603. convict them

  604. of sin

  605. in regard

  606. to sin

  607. because they

  608. do not

  609. believe in

  610. the Lord

  611. Jesus Christ.

  612. There's an

  613. old hymn

  614. I used to

  615. sing,

  616. I know

  617. not how

  618. the Spirit

  619. moves,

  620. convincing

  621. men of

  622. sin,

  623. revealing

  624. Jesus through

  625. the Word,

  626. create in

  627. faith in

  628. Him.

  629. But the

  630. Spirit does

  631. convince,

  632. and the

  633. Spirit does

  634. convince.

  635. May we

  636. know His

  637. work in

  638. our midst.

  639. The second

  640. point,

  641. the Holy

  642. Spirit reveals

  643. the righteousness

  644. of the Lord

  645. Jesus Christ.

  646. John 16

  647. and verse

  648. 8.

  649. When He

  650. comes,

  651. He will

  652. convict the

  653. world of

  654. guilt in

  655. regard to

  656. sin and

  657. righteousness.

  658. righteousness.

  659. And then in

  660. verse 10,

  661. in regard

  662. to righteousness,

  663. because I am

  664. going to the

  665. Father where

  666. you can see

  667. me no longer.

  668. So how

  669. does the

  670. Spirit convince

  671. of the

  672. righteousness of

  673. the Lord

  674. Jesus Christ?

  675. Well,

  676. Peter on the

  677. day of

  678. Pentecost

  679. shows very

  680. clearly that

  681. the death

  682. of Jesus

  683. was an

  684. unrighteous

  685. act.

  686. Acts 2

  687. and verse

  688. 23.

  689. You,

  690. with the

  691. help of

  692. wicked men,

  693. put Him

  694. to death,

  695. nailing Him

  696. to the

  697. cross.

  698. They were

  699. aware of it.

  700. It was

  701. recent

  702. history.

  703. They had

  704. said,

  705. and their

  706. leaders had

  707. said,

  708. by our

  709. law,

  710. He ought

  711. to die

  712. because He

  713. claims to

  714. be the

  715. Son of

  716. God.

  717. It was

  718. blasphemy.

  719. The law

  720. was clear.

  721. Blasphemy

  722. meant death.

  723. Jesus should

  724. be put to

  725. death.

  726. It was a

  727. righteous act

  728. in their

  729. eyes.

  730. But Jesus

  731. had been

  732. approved of

  733. God.

  734. He always

  735. had the

  736. Father's

  737. approval.

  738. There is

  739. His

  740. baptism.

  741. This is

  742. my

  743. beloved

  744. Son in

  745. whom I

  746. am well

  747. pleased.

  748. At His

  749. transfiguration,

  750. the same

  751. thing

  752. happened.

  753. And Jesus

  754. Himself was

  755. able to

  756. say,

  757. I do

  758. always

  759. those

  760. things

  761. that

  762. please

  763. Him.

  764. But the

  765. people had

  766. said it

  767. was a

  768. righteous

  769. thing in

  770. putting Him

  771. to death.

  772. And they

  773. put Him

  774. to death

  775. between

  776. two

  777. thieves.

  778. It was

  779. a

  780. travesty

  781. of

  782. justice.

  783. But here

  784. Peter,

  785. on the

  786. day of

  787. Pentecost,

  788. as He

  789. proclaims

  790. in the

  791. power of

  792. the Spirit,

  793. He shows

  794. very clearly

  795. that the

  796. Lord Jesus

  797. Christ was

  798. righteous.

  799. And that

  800. the Father

  801. had vindicated

  802. Him.

  803. God

  804. raised Him

  805. from the

  806. dead,

  807. He says

  808. in verse

  809. 24.

  810. Verse

  811. 32,

  812. God

  813. has raised

  814. this Jesus

  815. to life.

  816. and we

  817. are all

  818. witnesses

  819. to this

  820. fact.

  821. Therefore,

  822. let all

  823. Israel be

  824. assured of

  825. this.

  826. God has

  827. made this

  828. Jesus,

  829. whom you

  830. crucified,

  831. both Lord

  832. and Christ.

  833. Far

  834. from being

  835. guilty,

  836. the Father

  837. was saying

  838. clearly,

  839. I have

  840. vindicated

  841. my Son.

  842. The one

  843. you crucified

  844. was the

  845. Lamb without

  846. spot or

  847. blemish.

  848. And the

  849. Holy Spirit

  850. is drawing

  851. attention to

  852. the fact

  853. that the

  854. Father

  855. had

  856. accepted

  857. the sacrifice

  858. of His

  859. Son.

  860. Son.

  861. The

  862. Holy Spirit

  863. through

  864. Peter

  865. was

  866. proclaiming

  867. clearly

  868. that the

  869. death of

  870. Jesus

  871. was an

  872. unrighteous

  873. act.

  874. When

  875. He

  876. comes,

  877. He

  878. will

  879. convict

  880. the

  881. world

  882. in

  883. regard

  884. to

  885. righteousness,

  886. in

  887. righteousness,

  888. because I

  889. am going

  890. to the

  891. Father.

  892. And He

  893. had gone

  894. to the

  895. Father,

  896. and He

  897. sent forth

  898. His

  899. Spirit.

  900. They

  901. saw Him

  902. no more,

  903. but He

  904. lived on

  905. in the

  906. power of

  907. His

  908. Spirit.

  909. Notice

  910. how He

  911. draws

  912. attention

  913. to the

  914. resurrection

  915. in Acts

  916. 2 and

  917. verses

  918. 24 and

  919. 34.

  920. Indeed,

  921. the majority

  922. of Peter's

  923. message that

  924. day centered

  925. on the

  926. resurrection

  927. of the

  928. Lord Jesus.

  929. He

  930. had gone

  931. home to

  932. the

  933. Father

  934. by way

  935. of the

  936. cross.

  937. They

  938. saw Him

  939. no more,

  940. but He

  941. lives on

  942. a living,

  943. risen

  944. Savior.

  945. And the

  946. Holy Spirit

  947. testifies to

  948. this fact.

  949. It is as

  950. though the

  951. Father had

  952. placed His

  953. seal of

  954. approval on

  955. His Son by

  956. raising Him

  957. from the

  958. dead.

  959. And as

  960. Peter preached,

  961. so the

  962. Holy Spirit

  963. took the

  964. Word and

  965. planted it

  966. in the

  967. hearts of

  968. the hearers.

  969. It became

  970. a living,

  971. acting,

  972. life-giving

  973. Word.

  974. These

  975. people had

  976. known the

  977. Holy Scriptures.

  978. They knew the

  979. Old Testament.

  980. Many of them

  981. had memorized

  982. whole sections

  983. of it.

  984. They'd grown

  985. up with the

  986. Word of

  987. God.

  988. They would

  989. have known

  990. Psalm 16.

  991. Psalm 16

  992. that is

  993. quoted by

  994. the Apostle

  995. Peter on

  996. the day of

  997. Pentecost.

  998. You will

  999. not abandon

  1000. me to the

  1001. grave, nor

  1002. will you let

  1003. your Holy

  1004. One, your

  1005. Righteous

  1006. One, your

  1007. Perfect

  1008. One, see

  1009. decay.

  1010. On the

  1011. day of

  1012. Pentecost,

  1013. they saw

  1014. that this

  1015. spoke of

  1016. the Lord

  1017. Jesus

  1018. Christ,

  1019. the one

  1020. they had

  1021. recently

  1022. crucified.

  1023. They saw

  1024. it now

  1025. clearly, and

  1026. they saw

  1027. themselves as

  1028. guilty.

  1029. They saw

  1030. themselves as

  1031. the ones

  1032. who had

  1033. crucified the

  1034. risen Christ.

  1035. He wasn't

  1036. with them

  1037. anymore,

  1038. but he

  1039. descended up

  1040. on high.

  1041. He sent

  1042. the Holy

  1043. Spirit,

  1044. that they

  1045. might hear

  1046. these things

  1047. and believe.

  1048. No wonder

  1049. they shouted

  1050. out,

  1051. brothers,

  1052. what shall

  1053. we do?

  1054. They were

  1055. saying, is

  1056. there any

  1057. hope for

  1058. us?

  1059. And Peter

  1060. is able to

  1061. say, yes,

  1062. there is

  1063. hope for

  1064. you.

  1065. If you

  1066. turn in

  1067. faith to

  1068. this

  1069. crucified,

  1070. risen

  1071. Christ,

  1072. and we're

  1073. told in

  1074. Acts 2

    Acts 2:40

  1075. verse 40

  1076. with many

  1077. other words,

  1078. he warned

  1079. them and

  1080. pleaded with

  1081. them, save

  1082. yourselves from

  1083. this corrupt

  1084. generation.

  1085. You see,

  1086. they came to

  1087. see that

  1088. Jesus was

  1089. right and

  1090. that they

  1091. were wrong,

  1092. totally wrong.

  1093. do you know

  1094. the Holy

  1095. Spirit working

  1096. in your

  1097. life?

  1098. Do you

  1099. see him as

  1100. the righteous

  1101. one,

  1102. the perfect

  1103. one?

  1104. You do not

  1105. see him in

  1106. the flesh,

  1107. he has gone

  1108. to the

  1109. Father,

  1110. but he sent

  1111. the Holy

  1112. Spirit that

  1113. we might

  1114. see these

  1115. things,

  1116. and that

  1117. the very

  1118. righteousness

  1119. of the

  1120. Lord Jesus

  1121. Christ should

  1122. become ours.

  1123. Not only

  1124. that our

  1125. sin might

  1126. be wiped

  1127. clean,

  1128. but also

  1129. the very

  1130. righteousness

  1131. of Christ

  1132. should be

  1133. put to

  1134. our

  1135. account.

  1136. In

  1137. 1927,

  1138. there was

  1139. a revival

  1140. on the

  1141. east coast

  1142. of England.

  1143. I'm not

  1144. talking about

  1145. a mission.

  1146. I'm not

  1147. talking about

  1148. something that

  1149. man arranges.

  1150. I'm talking

  1151. about a

  1152. work of

  1153. God.

  1154. A work

  1155. of the

  1156. Holy

  1157. Spirit.

  1158. A man

  1159. had been

  1160. appointed to

  1161. preach a

  1162. series of

  1163. messages in

  1164. a place

  1165. called

  1166. Loisdorf.

  1167. It was a

  1168. fishing town.

  1169. It happened

  1170. to coincide

  1171. with the

  1172. herring

  1173. season.

  1174. The

  1175. herrings

  1176. went along

  1177. and the

  1178. boats

  1179. caught the

  1180. fish and

  1181. then they

  1182. moved up

  1183. the coast

  1184. following

  1185. the

  1186. shoals

  1187. of

  1188. herring.

  1189. Big

  1190. industry

  1191. in those

  1192. days.

  1193. A lot

  1194. of

  1195. Scots

  1196. fishermen

  1197. had come

  1198. down.

  1199. They were

  1200. religious

  1201. people.

  1202. But they

  1203. come down

  1204. for the

  1205. fishing

  1206. season.

  1207. They

  1208. come down

  1209. with their

  1210. wives

  1211. who

  1212. gutted

  1213. the

  1214. herrings

  1215. salted

  1216. them

  1217. as was

  1218. a

  1219. custom

  1220. in

  1221. those

  1222. days.

  1223. But because

  1224. they were

  1225. religious

  1226. they didn't

  1227. go to

  1228. sea on

  1229. Sunday.

  1230. They went

  1231. to the

  1232. church.

  1233. It happened

  1234. to be a

  1235. Baptist

  1236. church.

  1237. church.

  1238. And what

  1239. happened?

  1240. An

  1241. ordinary

  1242. sermon was

  1243. preached.

  1244. I've read

  1245. it.

  1246. There's

  1247. nothing

  1248. particularly

  1249. wonderful

  1250. about it.

  1251. It was

  1252. ordinary.

  1253. But it

  1254. was made

  1255. extraordinary

  1256. by the

  1257. Holy Spirit.

  1258. Because

  1259. people saw

  1260. him as

  1261. he really

  1262. was.

  1263. The

  1264. righteous

  1265. one.

  1266. And they

  1267. knew that

  1268. they were

  1269. not righteous

  1270. and they

  1271. turned to

  1272. him.

  1273. Many

  1274. fishermen.

  1275. Many

  1276. local

  1277. people.

  1278. And as

  1279. they went

  1280. up the

  1281. coast

  1282. so they

  1283. took that

  1284. message with

  1285. them.

  1286. And others

  1287. were converted.

  1288. It went

  1289. right up to

  1290. Scotland to

  1291. the fishing

  1292. villages.

  1293. It reached

  1294. Edinburgh

  1295. and Glasgow.

  1296. And a

  1297. great work

  1298. was done.

  1299. Because the

  1300. Holy Spirit

  1301. was present

  1302. testifying to

  1303. the Lord

  1304. Jesus Christ.

  1305. That he

  1306. was the

  1307. righteous

  1308. one.

  1309. That he

  1310. had ascended

  1311. to the

  1312. Father.

  1313. And that the

  1314. Father had

  1315. vindicated him

  1316. by raising

  1317. him from

  1318. the dead.

  1319. God

  1320. said to

  1321. God.

  1322. The third

  1323. and final

  1324. point is

  1325. this.

  1326. That the

  1327. Holy Spirit

  1328. reveals the

  1329. triumph

  1330. of the

  1331. Lord Jesus

  1332. Christ.

  1333. His triumph

  1334. over evil.

  1335. John 16

  1336. and verse

  1337. 8.

  1338. When he

  1339. comes

  1340. he will

  1341. convict the

  1342. world of

  1343. guilt

  1344. in regard

  1345. to sin

  1346. and righteousness

  1347. and judgment.

  1348. And verse

  1349. 11.

  1350. In regard

  1351. to judgment

  1352. because the

  1353. prince of

  1354. this world

  1355. now stands

  1356. condemned.

  1357. And on the

  1358. day of

  1359. Pentecost the

  1360. Holy Spirit

  1361. reveals the

  1362. Lord Jesus

  1363. Christ as

  1364. king and

  1365. ruler.

  1366. the one

  1367. who had

  1368. triumphed

  1369. over the

  1370. principalities

  1371. and powers

  1372. of darkness.

  1373. Look at

  1374. Acts 2

  1375. and verses

  1376. 29 to

  1377. 33.

  1378. Brothers

  1379. I tell

  1380. you confidently

  1381. that the

  1382. patriarch

  1383. David died

  1384. and was

  1385. buried.

  1386. And his

  1387. tomb is

  1388. here to

  1389. this day.

  1390. But he

  1391. was a

  1392. prophet.

  1393. And knew

  1394. that God

  1395. had promised

  1396. him on

  1397. oath that

  1398. he would

  1399. place one

  1400. of his

  1401. descendants on

  1402. his throne.

  1403. Seeing what

  1404. was ahead he

  1405. spoke of the

  1406. resurrection of

  1407. Christ.

  1408. That he was

  1409. not abandoned

  1410. to the grave

  1411. nor did his

  1412. body see

  1413. decay.

  1414. God

  1415. has raised

  1416. this Jesus

  1417. to life

  1418. and we are

  1419. all witnesses

  1420. of the fact

  1421. exalted

  1422. exalted

  1423. to the

  1424. right hand

  1425. of God.

  1426. He has

  1427. received from

  1428. the Father

  1429. the promised

  1430. Holy Spirit

  1431. and has

  1432. poured out

  1433. what you

  1434. now see

  1435. and hear.

  1436. what does

  1437. Peter say

  1438. empowered by

  1439. the Spirit?

  1440. What does

  1441. he testify

  1442. to?

  1443. He

  1444. testifies to

  1445. one who

  1446. wasn't allowed

  1447. to remain

  1448. in the

  1449. grave

  1450. but one

  1451. who is the

  1452. fulfillment of

  1453. the prophet

  1454. David

  1455. that there

  1456. was one

  1457. from his

  1458. very own

  1459. line who

  1460. would sit

  1461. on his

  1462. throne.

  1463. he testifies

  1464. to one

  1465. who has

  1466. been

  1467. exalted

  1468. to the

  1469. right hand

  1470. of God

  1471. the Father

  1472. having triumphed

  1473. over the

  1474. principalities

  1475. and powers

  1476. of darkness

  1477. having

  1478. condemned

  1479. the

  1480. prince

  1481. of this

  1482. world

  1483. having

  1484. condemned

  1485. him

  1486. through

  1487. his death

  1488. on the

  1489. cross

  1490. Paul

  1491. inspired

  1492. by the

  1493. Spirit

  1494. testifies

  1495. to these

  1496. things

  1497. in Colossians

  1498. 2

  1499. and verse

  1500. 15

  1501. having

  1502. disarmed

  1503. the powers

  1504. and authorities

  1505. he made

  1506. a public

  1507. spectacle

  1508. of them

  1509. triumphing

  1510. over them

  1511. by the

  1512. cross

  1513. a few

  1514. days

  1515. before

  1516. people

  1517. had looked

  1518. at the

  1519. situation

  1520. and it

  1521. seemed

  1522. utterly

  1523. hopeless

  1524. there

  1525. was their

  1526. prince

  1527. the one

  1528. they thought

  1529. who would

  1530. redeem

  1531. Israel

  1532. hanging

  1533. on a

  1534. cross

  1535. naked

  1536. a

  1537. spectacle

  1538. to the

  1539. watching

  1540. crowd

  1541. taken

  1542. away

  1543. and

  1544. buried

  1545. and a

  1546. stone

  1547. rolled

  1548. in front

  1549. of the

  1550. tomb

  1551. and a

  1552. seal

  1553. placed

  1554. upon

  1555. it

  1556. with

  1557. guards

  1558. even

  1559. his

  1560. disciples

  1561. spoke

  1562. of

  1563. Jesus

  1564. in the

  1565. past

  1566. tense

  1567. remember

  1568. them on

  1569. the

  1570. Emmaus

  1571. road

  1572. in

  1573. Luke

  1574. 24

  1575. and

  1576. verse

  1577. 21

  1578. we

  1579. had

  1580. hoped

  1581. that

  1582. he

  1583. was

  1584. the

  1585. one

  1586. who

  1587. would

  1588. redeem

  1589. Israel

  1590. but

  1591. remember

  1592. that

  1593. stranger

  1594. who

  1595. walked

  1596. with

  1597. them

  1598. even

  1599. the

  1600. risen

  1601. Christ

  1602. speaking

  1603. to

  1604. them

  1605. and

  1606. rebuking

  1607. them

  1608. did

  1609. not

  1610. the

  1611. Christ

  1612. have

  1613. to

  1614. suffer

  1615. these

  1616. things

  1617. and

  1618. then

  1619. enter

  1620. his

  1621. glory

  1622. but

  1623. the

  1624. glory

  1625. had

  1626. now

  1627. been

  1628. entered

  1629. the

  1630. son

  1631. had

  1632. triumphed

  1633. the

  1634. devil

  1635. had

  1636. been

  1637. defeated

  1638. the

  1639. conquering

  1640. king

  1641. was

  1642. demonstrating

  1643. his

  1644. power

  1645. that

  1646. day

  1647. as

  1648. three

  1649. thousand

  1650. people

  1651. bowed

  1652. the

  1653. knee

  1654. to

  1655. him

  1656. my

  1657. friends

  1658. what a

  1659. saviour

  1660. who has

  1661. done

  1662. all

  1663. this

  1664. when

  1665. he

  1666. comes

  1667. he

  1668. will

  1669. convict

  1670. the

  1671. world

  1672. of

  1673. guilt

  1674. in

  1675. regard

  1676. to

  1677. sin

  1678. and

  1679. righteousness

  1680. and

  1681. judgment

  1682. and the

  1683. holy

  1684. spirit

  1685. has

  1686. come

  1687. and

  1688. testified

  1689. to

  1690. all

  1691. that

  1692. Jesus

  1693. came

  1694. to

  1695. say

  1696. and

  1697. to

  1698. do

  1699. and

  1700. the

  1701. holy

  1702. spirit

  1703. calls

  1704. us

  1705. to

  1706. submission

  1707. to

  1708. the

  1709. triumphant

  1710. Christ

  1711. hear

  1712. Peter

  1713. in

  1714. Acts

  1715. 2

  1716. and

  1717. verse

  1718. 36

  1719. therefore

  1720. let

  1721. all

  1722. Israel

  1723. be

  1724. assured

  1725. of

  1726. this

  1727. God

  1728. has

  1729. made

  1730. this

  1731. Jesus

  1732. whom

  1733. you

  1734. crucified

  1735. both

  1736. Lord

  1737. and

  1738. Christ

  1739. he

  1740. is

  1741. Lord

  1742. we

  1743. sometimes

  1744. speak

  1745. of

  1746. Jesus

  1747. and

  1748. we

  1749. leave

  1750. out

  1751. his

  1752. lordship

  1753. but

  1754. we

  1755. cannot

  1756. according

  1757. to

  1758. scripture

  1759. he

  1760. is

  1761. Lord

  1762. and

  1763. he

  1764. demands

  1765. our

  1766. submission

  1767. what

  1768. were the

  1769. people

  1770. to do

  1771. when

  1772. they

  1773. heard

  1774. the

  1775. information

  1776. they

  1777. were

  1778. to

  1779. repent

  1780. and

  1781. be

  1782. baptized

  1783. and

  1784. they

  1785. did

  1786. repent

  1787. they

  1788. did

  1789. believe

  1790. they

  1791. were

  1792. baptized

  1793. and

  1794. they

  1795. continued

  1796. in

  1797. the

  1798. apostles

  1799. fellowship

  1800. and

  1801. in

  1802. their

  1803. teaching

  1804. they

  1805. had

  1806. been

  1807. delivered

  1808. from

  1809. the

  1810. judgment

  1811. that

  1812. was

  1813. to

  1814. come

  1815. they

  1816. walked

  1817. with

  1818. the

  1819. victorious

  1820. risen

  1821. Christ

  1822. they

  1823. were

  1824. convinced

  1825. of

  1826. sin

  1827. and

  1828. the

  1829. righteousness

  1830. and

  1831. judgment

  1832. so

  1833. what

  1834. are we

  1835. going

  1836. to do

  1837. with

  1838. the

  1839. information

  1840. that we

  1841. have

  1842. received

  1843. today

  1844. well

  1845. there's

  1846. two

  1847. ways

  1848. if you're

  1849. not a

  1850. believer

  1851. turn

  1852. from

  1853. your

  1854. sin

  1855. to

  1856. him

  1857. it's

  1858. as

  1859. simple

  1860. and

  1861. as

  1862. wonderful

  1863. as

  1864. that

  1865. if

  1866. you

  1867. are

  1868. the

  1869. Lord's

  1870. then

  1871. there's

  1872. a

  1873. world

  1874. out

  1875. there

  1876. that

  1877. needs

  1878. to

  1879. hear

  1880. of

  1881. this

  1882. Jesus

  1883. but

  1884. don't

  1885. do

  1886. it

  1887. in

  1888. your

  1889. own

  1890. strength

  1891. look

  1892. for

  1893. the

  1894. Holy

  1895. Spirit

  1896. to

  1897. come

  1898. and

  1899. take

  1900. your

  1901. words

  1902. pray

  1903. that

  1904. you

  1905. will

  1906. know

  1907. the

  1908. working

  1909. of

  1910. God's

  1911. Spirit

  1912. in

  1913. your

  1914. life

  1915. that

  1916. you

  1917. may

  1918. constantly

  1919. glorify

  1920. the

  1921. Lord

  1922. Jesus

  1923. Christ

  1924. pray

  1925. that

  1926. our

  1927. words

  1928. of

  1929. witness

  1930. will

  1931. be

  1932. effectual

  1933. that

  1934. they

  1935. will

  1936. be

  1937. taken

  1938. by

  1939. the

  1940. Spirit

  1941. and

  1942. used

  1943. to

  1944. bring

  1945. people

  1946. to

  1947. trust

  1948. in

  1949. the

  1950. Savior

  1951. but

  1952. there

  1953. we

  1954. pray

  1955. something

  1956. else

  1957. we

  1958. do

  1959. not

  1960. despise

  1961. the

  1962. day

  1963. of

  1964. small

  1965. things

  1966. of

  1967. one

  1968. here

  1969. and

  1970. another

  1971. there

  1972. coming

  1973. to

  1974. salvation

  1975. in

  1976. the

  1977. Lord

  1978. Jesus

  1979. Christ

  1980. indeed

  1981. we

  1982. rejoice

  1983. and

  1984. why

  1985. shouldn't

  1986. we

  1987. seeing

  1988. that

  1989. the

  1990. angels

  1991. rejoice

  1992. over

  1993. one

  1994. sinner

  1995. that

  1996. repents

  1997. so

  1998. we

  1999. don't

  2000. despise

  2001. the

  2002. day

  2003. of

  2004. small

  2005. things

  2006. but

  2007. there

  2008. we

  2009. pray

  2010. that

  2011. God

  2012. would

  2013. move

  2014. by

  2015. his

  2016. Holy

  2017. Spirit

  2018. that

  2019. Karageline

  2020. would

  2021. be

  2022. transformed

  2023. in

  2024. 1904

  2025. and

  2026. 5

  2027. there

  2028. was

  2029. a

  2030. revival

  2031. in

  2032. Wales

  2033. and a

  2034. man

  2035. got on

  2036. a train

  2037. early

  2038. one

  2039. Sunday

  2040. morning

  2041. to go

  2042. to see

  2043. this

  2044. revival

  2045. that was

  2046. happening

  2047. in the

  2048. north part

  2049. of Wales

  2050. got off

  2051. the train

  2052. and

  2053. he met

  2054. somebody

  2055. he says

  2056. I've

  2057. come

  2058. to

  2059. witness

  2060. the

  2061. revival

  2062. where

  2063. is

  2064. it

  2065. he

  2066. said

  2067. walk

  2068. down

  2069. the

  2070. road

  2071. two

  2072. miles

  2073. and

  2074. you

  2075. will

  2076. feel

  2077. it

  2078. the

  2079. presence

  2080. of

  2081. God

  2082. was

  2083. so

  2084. real

  2085. courts

  2086. didn't

  2087. sit

  2088. because

  2089. there

  2090. was no

  2091. one

  2092. charged

  2093. with

  2094. any

  2095. offense

  2096. even

  2097. the

  2098. unbeliever

  2099. kept

  2100. away

  2101. from

  2102. his

  2103. sin

  2104. such

  2105. was

  2106. the

  2107. presence

  2108. of

  2109. God

  2110. could

  2111. it

  2112. happen

  2113. in

  2114. Caragalline

  2115. well I

  2116. can't

  2117. do it

  2118. Johnny

  2119. here

  2120. can't

  2121. do it

  2122. but

  2123. God

  2124. can

  2125. oh

  2126. that he

  2127. might

  2128. come

  2129. in the

  2130. power

  2131. of his

  2132. Holy

  2133. Spirit

  2134. and the

  2135. Holy

  2136. Spirit

  2137. will

  2138. testify

  2139. of

  2140. Christ

  2141. let's

  2142. pray

  2143. father

  2144. in

  2145. heaven

  2146. we're

  2147. conscious

  2148. so often

  2149. of the

  2150. coldness

  2151. of our

  2152. hearts

  2153. we're

  2154. conscious

  2155. of the

  2156. fact

  2157. that we're

  2158. not as

  2159. thrilled

  2160. with the

  2161. message of

  2162. salvation

  2163. as we

  2164. perhaps

  2165. once

  2166. were

  2167. move

  2168. in our

  2169. own

  2170. hearts

  2171. revive

  2172. our

  2173. hearts

  2174. we pray

  2175. and send

  2176. us out

  2177. into the

  2178. community

  2179. that we

  2180. might
