  1. If those who are going to read, if they could come up.

  2. There's two readings, one from Ephesians and one from Genesis.

  3. The Genesis reading first and then Ephesians, so we'll do that.

  4. Genesis 3, 1-17, you'll find it on page 5.

  5. Of your Bible.

  6. That's the beginning of the Bible.

  7. Now the servant was more crafty than any of the wild animals the Lord God had made.

  8. He said to the woman, did God really say you must not eat from the tree in the garden?

  9. The woman said to the serpent, we may eat fruit from the trees in the garden.

  10. But God did say you must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden.

  11. You must not touch it or you will die.

  12. You will not surely die, the servant said to the woman, for God knows that when you eat it, your eyes will be opened and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.

  13. When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it.

  14. She also gave some to her husband who was with her and he ate it.

  15. Then the eyes of both of them were opened and they realized they were naked.

  16. So they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves.

  17. Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the Lord God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day.

  18. And they hid from the Lord God among the trees of the garden.

  19. But the Lord God called to the man, where are you?

  20. He answered, I heard you in the garden and I was afraid because I was naked.

  21. So I hid.

  22. And he said, who told you that you were naked?

  23. Have you eaten from the tree from which I commanded you not to eat?

  24. The man said, the woman, you put her here with me.

  25. She gave me some fruit from the tree and I ate it.

  26. And then the Lord God said to the woman, what is this that you have done?

  27. And the woman said, the serpent, he deceived me and I ate it.

  28. So the Lord God said to the serpent, because you have done this, cursed are you above all the livestock and all the wild animals.

  29. You will crawl on your belly and you will eat dust all the days of your life.

  30. And I will put enmity between you and the woman, between your offspring and hers.

  31. He will crush your head and you will strike his heel.

  32. To the woman he said, I will greatly increase your pains in childbearing.

  33. With pain you will give birth to children.

  34. Your desire will be for your husband and he will rule over you.

  35. To Adam he said, because you listened to your wife and ate from the tree about which I commanded you, you must not eat of it.

  36. Cursed is the ground because of you.

  37. Through painful toil you will eat of it all the days of your life.

  38. And the next reading is taken from Ephesians chapter 5, beginning at verse 22.

    Ephesians 5 chapter mention

  39. And that's on page 1176 of the Church Bible.

  40. Ephesians chapter 5, beginning at verse 22.

    Ephesians 5 chapter mention

  41. Wives, submit to your husbands as to the Lord.

  42. For the husband is the head of the wife, as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the saviour.

  43. Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything.

  44. Husbands, love your wives just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her, to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word,

  45. and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless.

  46. In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies.

  47. He who loves his wife loves himself.

  48. After all, no one ever hated his own body, but he feeds and cares for it, just as Christ does the church.

  49. For we are members of his body.

  50. For this reason, a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.

  51. This is a profound mystery, but I am talking about Christ and the church.

  52. However, each of you also must love his wife as he loves himself,

  53. and the wife must respect her husband.

  54. Thanks very much, Ross and Chris, for reading.

  55. Please keep your Bibles open there at Ephesians 5.

  56. That's the main part that we're going to be looking at, but we'll also be going back to Genesis 3.

  57. And this is a continuation in our little series on learning to lead.

  58. Last week we were looking at leaders within the church.

  59. Next week, well, it's the all-age celebration.

  60. So a week after that, we're going to be looking at leaders within the home.

  61. And today we're looking at leaders in marriage.

  62. Well, let's ask for God's help as we look at this.

  63. Our Father, we are grateful for all that you give to us, but we are needy people,

  64. and we always need the help of your Holy Spirit to understand these words that have been written,

  65. to see how they apply to us, but also that they would change us and transform us and cause us to live according to your design.

  66. So please work amongst us this morning.

  67. Please encourage us all and help us as we seek to understand what it is to lead in marriage as you have designed it.

  68. And we pray it in Jesus' name. Amen.

  69. And can I say as well, if there's any questions at any time,

  70. if it's really a bursting question, you can signal.

  71. But if you can wait until at the end, that's okay too.

  72. But please, you know, we do want to discuss these things,

  73. and there may be issues that arise and you want to talk through.

  74. So please feel free to talk to me after.

  75. So, leaders in marriage.

  76. Well, marriage, it seems, is still very popular.

  77. According to last year's census, which I hope you all filled out,

  78. 37% of our population is now married.

  79. That's an increase of 145,000 from five years ago.

  80. So love is certainly in the air.

  81. However, the same census tells us that there's a greater increase in marriage breakdown.

  82. So, for example, divorce is up by 150% from five years ago.

  83. That's an extra 50,000 couples who've experienced a broken marriage.

  84. Or to put it another way, 15% of those who get married end in divorce or separation.

  85. And that's a very conservative figure.

  86. And it doesn't stop there.

  87. Many stay together, but yet their marriages are very unhappy,

  88. and they cease to function as they ought.

  89. And, of course, there's many reasons for that,

  90. and we haven't time to look at all of those reasons.

  91. But I think the main underlying reason,

  92. the root cause for marriage breakdown,

  93. is a failure for God's people to follow God's design for marriage.

  94. And, in particular, the husband in his role as leader.

  95. So what is God's design for marriage?

  96. Well, as one writer put it,

  97. it is politically incorrect and deeply beautiful.

  98. Have a look at Ephesians, chapter 5, verse 22.

    Ephesians 5:22

  99. Wives, submit to your husbands as to the Lord.

  100. For the husband is the head of the wife,

  101. as Christ is the head of the church.

  102. So let me summarize it like this.

  103. Submission and headship,

  104. and when we say headship, we mean leadership.

  105. Submission and headship is God's beautiful design for marriage.

  106. Now, I know that's a terribly unpopular statement,

  107. and that could get me into a lot of trouble.

  108. If I was to write that in a local newspaper,

  109. I bet you I would get a lot of replies.

  110. In fact, it sounds very deeply offensive

  111. and culturally oppressive.

  112. And before you're going to leave in anger or annoyance

  113. or start throwing shoes at me or anything else like that,

  114. we want to explore what we mean by submission and headship.

  115. Well, first, it does not mean inferiority or superiority.

  116. It means equality.

  117. At the very beginning of the Bible,

  118. no need to turn to it.

  119. In Genesis 1, 27, it says that

  120. God created man in his own image.

  121. In the image of God, he created him.

  122. Male and female, he created them.

  123. So we are all equal in God's sight.

  124. We're all made in his image.

  125. So men are not greater,

  126. and women are not better.

  127. Exercising headship

  128. does not increase my status or my value

  129. any more than exercising submission

  130. reduces my status or value.

  131. We are equally loved

  132. and treasured by God.

  133. Equal in value

  134. before God

  135. and equal in our position

  136. before God.

  137. So there's equality

  138. between man and woman,

  139. husband and wife.

  140. Now, second,

  141. while there's equality,

  142. this does not mean

  143. sameness or likeness.

  144. It means

  145. that we are complementary.

  146. Men and women are different.

  147. Physically,

  148. we're different.

  149. That's obvious.

  150. Emotionally,

  151. we're different.

  152. And part of that difference

  153. is seen in our God-given roles.

  154. So under God's design,

  155. we have been given

  156. different responsibilities.

  157. And we see this

  158. as we read through

  159. the creation account

  160. of the man and the woman,

  161. particularly in Genesis chapter 2.

    Genesis 2 chapter mention

  162. Because there's,

  163. we read through that account,

  164. we see that Adam

  165. was given the command

  166. not to eat

  167. from the fruit of the tree

  168. in the middle of the garden.

  169. Chapter 2, verse 16.

  170. Don't eat it,

  171. he was told.

  172. And then we read

  173. a little bit later on

  174. and we see that Eve

  175. eats the fruit

  176. and she gives it

  177. to her husband,

  178. but it's God

  179. who holds Adam

  180. to account

  181. for what has happened

  182. in chapter 3, verse 9.

  183. So this is termed

  184. in Ephesians

  185. as headship.

  186. He's responsible.

  187. He's the leader.

  188. God holds him

  189. to account.

  190. And we also see

  191. within the Genesis account

  192. that when God

  193. created Eve,

  194. it was with a special purpose

  195. of being a helper

  196. to Adam.

  197. in chapter 2, verse 20.

  198. And being a helper

  199. doesn't mean

  200. a go for,

  201. get this, get that.

  202. But that Adam

  203. was incapable

  204. of doing all

  205. that God had called him

  206. to do

  207. and he needed

  208. a helper,

  209. he needed a partner,

  210. somebody who was going

  211. to work alongside him.

  212. And this is termed

  213. in Ephesians

  214. as submission.

  215. So equality

  216. but complementarity.

  217. Adam needed Eve

  218. and Eve needed Adam.

  219. This was all part

  220. of God's beautiful design

  221. for marriage.

  222. But third and primarily,

  223. God's design

  224. for the man

  225. and the woman

  226. was ultimately

  227. that he would reflect

  228. the gospel.

  229. So when we look

  230. at the role

  231. of the husband

  232. and the wife,

  233. we see a picture

  234. of the gospel.

  235. The role

  236. of the husband

  237. reflects the headship

  238. of Christ

  239. which is seen

  240. through sacrificial service.

  241. The role

  242. of the wife

  243. reflects the submission

  244. of the church

  245. to Christ

  246. through willing obedience.

  247. So look at verse 24

  248. of Ephesians

    Ephesians 5 chapter mention

  249. chapter 5.

  250. Now as the church

  251. submits to Christ,

  252. so also wives

  253. should submit

  254. to their husbands.

  255. And verse 25,

  256. Husbands,

  257. love your wives

  258. just as Christ

  259. loved the church

  260. and gave himself

  261. up for her.

  262. Verse 32,

  263. this is a profound mystery

  264. but I am talking

  265. about Christ

  266. and the church.

  267. So here he's going

  268. on about marriage

  269. but then he says,

  270. no actually

  271. we're talking

  272. about Christ

  273. and the church.

  274. We're talking

  275. about the gospel.

  276. God's design

  277. for marriage

  278. is a visible picture

  279. of the good news.

  280. In fact,

  281. a marriage relationship

  282. is a working demonstration

  283. of Christ's headship

  284. over the church

  285. and the church's

  286. submission to Christ.

  287. So if you want to know

  288. what Christ has done,

  289. well we're to look

  290. at the husband

  291. and we'll get

  292. a picture of that.

  293. If we want to know

  294. how the church

  295. should respond to Christ,

  296. we'll look at the wife

  297. and we'll get

  298. a picture of that.

  299. The marriage relationship

  300. is to be a beautiful

  301. picture of the gospel.

  302. That is its primary

  303. reason.

  304. But to get back

  305. to the design

  306. and the reason

  307. for the breakdown

  308. in marriage

  309. is because

  310. we have rejected

  311. collectively

  312. as a society

  313. God's design

  314. for marriage

  315. especially

  316. and I'm going

  317. to be hard

  318. on us men,

  319. myself included,

  320. we have rejected

  321. God's design

  322. for marriage

  323. in two ways.

  324. first we

  325. abdicate

  326. our authority.

  327. Look back

  328. to Genesis 3

  329. and we'll see

  330. how this has worked out.

  331. Genesis chapter 3.

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  332. In Genesis 3

  333. we have the account

  334. of the first marriage

  335. and sadly

  336. the first marriage

  337. breakdown.

  338. and traditionally

  339. we tend to look

  340. at this story

  341. and we think

  342. well

  343. the wife

  344. that's Eve

  345. she's the one

  346. to blame

  347. because she's the one

  348. who ate the fruit

  349. but that's not actually

  350. the real story.

  351. Look at chapter 3

  352. verse 6.

  353. When the woman

  354. saw the fruit

  355. of the tree

  356. that was good

  357. for food

  358. and pleasing

  359. to the eye

  360. and also desirable

  361. for gaining wisdom

  362. she took some

  363. and she ate it.

  364. she also gave

  365. some to her husband

  366. who was with her

  367. and he ate it.

  368. So Adam

  369. the husband

  370. was actually there

  371. all along.

  372. All throughout

  373. that temptation

  374. Adam was just

  375. standing idly by.

  376. He had been given

  377. the original command

  378. in chapter 2

  379. verse 16

  380. not to eat

  381. of the fruit

  382. and now

  383. he ignores

  384. his responsibility

  385. to ensure

  386. that God's commands

  387. are being worked out

  388. within his life

  389. and within his marriage.

  390. That's why

  391. it's God

  392. who comes looking

  393. for Adam

  394. afterwards

  395. even though

  396. it was Eve

  397. who ate the fruit

  398. first

  399. he comes looking

  400. for Adam

  401. chapter 3

  402. verse 9

  403. the Lord God

  404. called to the man

  405. where are you?

  406. Come on Adam

  407. show yourself.

  408. Down to verse 17

  409. to Adam

  410. he said

  411. because

  412. you listened

  413. to your wife

  414. and ate

  415. from the tree

  416. about which

  417. I commanded you

  418. you must not

  419. eat of it

  420. cursed

  421. is the ground

  422. because of you.

  423. God holds

  424. Adam

  425. the head

  426. of the marriage

  427. to account

  428. he is the one

  429. who is responsible

  430. Adam

  431. has abdicated

  432. his authority

  433. he's been sitting

  434. back with his arms

  435. folded

  436. he hasn't taken

  437. his role seriously

  438. in fact

  439. he's turned

  440. his back

  441. on God's design

  442. and the knock-on

  443. effects of this

  444. are disastrous

  445. because

  446. abdicating

  447. authority

  448. leads to

  449. the husband

  450. abusing

  451. his authority

  452. look at

  453. chapter 3

  454. of Genesis

  455. and the last

  456. part of verse 16

  457. this is the

  458. the pronouncement

  459. upon Eve

  460. upon the woman

  461. for her part

  462. in it

  463. but let's

  464. let's hear

  465. carefully what it

  466. says

  467. it's the last

  468. two lines

  469. of verse 16

  470. it says

  471. that your

  472. desire

  473. will be

  474. for your

  475. husband

  476. and he

  477. will rule

  478. over you

  479. now we need

  480. to understand

  481. that carefully

  482. when it says

  483. for the woman

  484. to desire

  485. your husband

  486. it doesn't

  487. mean to say

  488. that she's

  489. going to be

  490. totally madly

  491. in love

  492. with him

  493. it means

  494. actually to

  495. dominate

  496. your husband

  497. to take

  498. his place

  499. to put

  500. yourself

  501. in his

  502. place

  503. and to

  504. take on

  505. his role

  506. and in

  507. response

  508. he

  509. will rule

  510. over you

  511. to rule

  512. over

  513. not in a

  514. good way

  515. but in a

  516. bad way

  517. it means

  518. to oppress

  519. your wife

  520. to be

  521. harsh

  522. today we

  523. call it

  524. feminism

  525. and chauvinism

  526. where the

  527. wife

  528. usurps

  529. her authority

  530. and the

  531. husband

  532. abdicates

  533. or abuses

  534. his authority

  535. the wife

  536. tries to do

  537. what the

  538. husband should

  539. do

  540. she seeks

  541. to be

  542. head of

  543. the family

  544. and the

  545. husband

  546. abuses

  547. his role

  548. so instead

  549. of serving

  550. his wife

  551. his wife

  552. is there

  553. to serve

  554. him

  555. and I

  556. hope we

  557. can see

  558. how this

  559. begins to

  560. get worked

  561. out within

  562. our marriage

  563. relationships

  564. this is

  565. part of

  566. the fall

  567. this is a

  568. part of

  569. working out

  570. of what

  571. happens when

  572. we go

  573. against

  574. God's

  575. design

  576. the wife

  577. tries to

  578. control

  579. the husband

  580. manipulating

  581. and scheming

  582. and trying

  583. to get

  584. their own

  585. way

  586. and in

  587. response

  588. the husband

  589. doesn't like

  590. this so he

  591. tries to

  592. crush the

  593. wife

  594. and becomes

  595. very domineering

  596. and aggressive

  597. and all of

  598. this leads

  599. to heartache

  600. and pain

  601. and brokenness

  602. and disorder

  603. this terrible

  604. ongoing cycle

  605. of trying

  606. to control

  607. the husband

  608. and the

  609. husband

  610. in response

  611. crushing

  612. his wife

  613. so instead

  614. of seeing

  615. the gospel

  616. instead of

  617. getting this

  618. wonderful picture

  619. of Christ

  620. all we see

  621. is sin

  622. in all

  623. its ugliness

  624. things

  625. now let's

  626. just take a

  627. moment out

  628. from this

  629. and apply

  630. this to

  631. husbands

  632. and to

  633. wives

  634. so husbands

  635. listen up

  636. and not just

  637. husbands

  638. but all

  639. potential husbands

  640. okay

  641. listen carefully

  642. we need to

  643. see that

  644. our sinful

  645. nature

  646. our natural

  647. tendency

  648. is always

  649. moving towards

  650. abdicating

  651. our authority

  652. or abusing

  653. our authority

  654. we abdicate

  655. and we sit

  656. back because

  657. we just don't

  658. want to take

  659. on the

  660. responsibility

  661. it's too

  662. much like

  663. hard work

  664. after all

  665. we've got

  666. much better

  667. things to be

  668. doing like

  669. well there's

  670. all the sport

  671. we've got to

  672. do and there's

  673. all those

  674. DIY projects

  675. and then there's

  676. all that work

  677. I've got to

  678. do it

  679. you know

  680. in the mornings

  681. and everything

  682. else

  683. why would I

  684. waste my

  685. time on

  686. caring

  687. and giving

  688. to my wife

  689. and to

  690. family

  691. and investing

  692. in them

  693. why would I

  694. do that

  695. when I've

  696. got things

  697. to do

  698. for myself

  699. and we

  700. abuse our

  701. authority

  702. because well

  703. we're just

  704. selfish beings

  705. and we're

  706. insecure

  707. and we want

  708. everything done

  709. for us

  710. we prioritize

  711. our comfort

  712. and our

  713. happiness

  714. above our

  715. wife

  716. we know

  717. what our

  718. comforts are

  719. and we

  720. know what

  721. we want

  722. so they

  723. suffer

  724. while we

  725. savour

  726. the moment

  727. now I

  728. don't know

  729. what you

  730. think of

  731. that

  732. husbands

  733. and potential

  734. husbands

  735. but I

  736. think

  737. we fit

  738. into one

  739. or at

  740. times both

  741. of these

  742. positions

  743. but God

  744. has made

  745. us and he

  746. has given

  747. us a role

  748. and responsibility

  749. that demands

  750. our attention

  751. and we

  752. need to

  753. repent

  754. we need

  755. to acknowledge

  756. to our

  757. wives

  758. we need

  759. to come

  760. before them

  761. verbally

  762. and acknowledge

  763. and say

  764. to them

  765. yes I

  766. have let

  767. you down

  768. yes I

  769. have failed

  770. in this

  771. area

  772. and we

  773. need to

  774. seek God's

  775. forgiveness

  776. and we

  777. need to

  778. ask of

  779. his grace

  780. and his

  781. spirit

  782. to be

  783. able to

  784. live out

  785. his

  786. beautiful

  787. design

  788. so

  789. husbands

  790. and potential

  791. husbands

  792. listen

  793. carefully

  794. to these

  795. things

  796. but let

  797. me say

  798. something

  799. to wives

  800. and all

  801. potential

  802. wives as

  803. well

  804. you need

  805. to see

  806. that your

  807. sinful

  808. nature

  809. your

  810. heart

  811. tendency

  812. is always

  813. moving

  814. towards

  815. usurping

  816. authority

  817. or

  818. becoming

  819. a slave

  820. to authority

  821. so let

  822. me unpack

  823. that

  824. wives

  825. tend to

  826. usurp

  827. their

  828. authority

  829. to demand

  830. their rights

  831. to express

  832. their autonomy

  833. it's my

  834. way or

  835. the highway

  836. unless it's

  837. my way

  838. we're not

  839. doing it

  840. but wives

  841. can also

  842. become a

  843. slave to

  844. authority

  845. they see

  846. themselves

  847. as just

  848. nothing more

  849. than a

  850. little

  851. mousy

  852. doormat

  853. a yes

  854. sir

  855. no

  856. sir

  857. three

  858. bags

  859. full

  860. sir

  861. whatever

  862. you

  863. want

  864. I'll

  865. do

  866. well such

  867. a wife

  868. who lives

  869. that way

  870. sadly

  871. has lost

  872. sight of

  873. her dignity

  874. and her

  875. value

  876. that she

  877. is precious

  878. and that

  879. she's been

  880. made in

  881. God's

  882. image

  883. that wives

  884. were called

  885. to be

  886. helpers and

  887. partners with

  888. their husbands

  889. and to

  890. make possible

  891. what their

  892. husbands simply

  893. cannot do

  894. on their

  895. own

  896. so wives

  897. and potential

  898. wives

  899. God has

  900. made you

  901. beautifully

  902. and wonderfully

  903. but rather

  904. than write

  905. your own

  906. role and

  907. your own

  908. description

  909. for what

  910. a wife

  911. should be

  912. follow

  913. God's

  914. design

  915. which is

  916. best for

  917. you

  918. and good

  919. for you

  920. and where

  921. we need

  922. to repent

  923. let's

  924. repent

  925. and just

  926. as husbands

  927. need to

  928. acknowledge

  929. to wives

  930. so wives

  931. need to

  932. acknowledge

  933. to their

  934. husbands

  935. and maybe

  936. you're not

  937. married

  938. maybe you

  939. were married

  940. where do

  941. you fit

  942. into all

  943. of this

  944. well

  945. marriages

  946. need

  947. prayer

  948. and support

  949. as I

  950. said at

  951. the beginning

  952. the increase

  953. in marriage

  954. breakdown

  955. goes on

  956. and on

  957. and on

  958. and it's

  959. just as

  960. likely to

  961. happen

  962. within

  963. God's

  964. family

  965. as

  966. anywhere

  967. else

  968. we're

  969. not

  970. immune

  971. to

  972. the

  973. pressures

  974. and

  975. the

  976. temptations

  977. so

  978. marriages

  979. need

  980. prayer

  981. and they

  982. need

  983. support

  984. and they

  985. need

  986. encouragement

  987. from

  988. all

  989. of

  990. God's

  991. family

  992. so what

  993. does it

  994. look like

  995. then to

  996. live out

  997. God's

  998. good design

  999. for marriage

  1000. well let's

  1001. look at

  1002. two things

  1003. here

  1004. the design

  1005. of headship

  1006. to start

  1007. with

  1008. we need

  1009. to go

  1010. back to

  1011. Ephesians

    Ephesians 5 chapter mention

  1012. chapter 5

  1013. go back

  1014. to Ephesians

    Ephesians 5 chapter mention

  1015. chapter 5

  1016. the

  1017. husband's

  1018. headship

  1019. of the

  1020. wife

  1021. is

  1022. modelled

  1023. on

  1024. Christ's

  1025. headship

  1026. of the

  1027. church

  1028. so in

  1029. Ephesians

    Ephesians 5:23

  1030. 5

  1031. verse

  1032. 23

  1033. it says

  1034. for the

  1035. husband

  1036. is the

  1037. head

  1038. of the

  1039. wife

  1040. as

  1041. Christ

  1042. is the

  1043. head

  1044. of the

  1045. church

  1046. his

  1047. body

  1048. of which

  1049. he

  1050. is the

  1051. savior

  1052. verse

  1053. 25

  1054. so

  1055. husbands

  1056. love

  1057. your

  1058. wives

  1059. just

  1060. as

  1061. Christ

  1062. loved

  1063. the

  1064. church

  1065. and

  1066. gave

  1067. himself

  1068. up

  1069. for

  1070. her

  1071. headship

  1072. is about

  1073. self

  1074. sacrifice

  1075. it's about

  1076. loving

  1077. service

  1078. C.S.

  1079. Lewis

  1080. writes

  1081. that the

  1082. headship

  1083. of the

  1084. husband

  1085. is not

  1086. expressed

  1087. in husbands

  1088. doing as

  1089. they like

  1090. but in

  1091. him whose

  1092. marriage

  1093. is most

  1094. like a

  1095. crucifixion

  1096. one

  1097. one of

  1098. service

  1099. whose

  1100. wife

  1101. receives

  1102. most

  1103. and

  1104. gives

  1105. least

  1106. so

  1107. husbands

  1108. we are

  1109. to

  1110. exercise

  1111. our

  1112. authority

  1113. by giving

  1114. of ourselves

  1115. sacrificially

  1116. to our

  1117. wives

  1118. and primarily

  1119. I think

  1120. this is

  1121. done by

  1122. taking

  1123. and applying

  1124. and working

  1125. out the

  1126. gospel

  1127. within

  1128. our

  1129. marriages

  1130. and within

  1131. our

  1132. family

  1133. so look

  1134. at the

  1135. rest of

  1136. verse

  1137. 26

  1138. and 27

  1139. husbands

  1140. are to

  1141. love

  1142. their

  1143. wives

  1144. just as

  1145. Christ

  1146. gave

  1147. himself

  1148. for her

  1149. to make

  1150. her holy

  1151. cleansing

  1152. her by

  1153. the washing

  1154. with water

  1155. through the

  1156. word

  1157. and to

  1158. present

  1159. her to

  1160. himself

  1161. as a

  1162. radiant

  1163. church

  1164. without

  1165. stain

  1166. or wrinkle

  1167. or any

  1168. other

  1169. blemish

  1170. but holy

  1171. and

  1172. blameless

  1173. so just

  1174. as Jesus

  1175. Christ

  1176. gave of

  1177. himself

  1178. to make

  1179. us

  1180. the church

  1181. beautiful

  1182. so husbands

  1183. are to

  1184. give

  1185. themselves

  1186. to their

  1187. wives

  1188. to make

  1189. them

  1190. beautiful

  1191. not just

  1192. physically

  1193. outwardly

  1194. but in

  1195. their purity

  1196. inwardly

  1197. and in

  1198. their

  1199. godliness

  1200. I find

  1201. this quote

  1202. very helpful

  1203. we who

  1204. are husbands

  1205. need

  1206. sufficient

  1207. guts

  1208. to be

  1209. beauticians

  1210. that is

  1211. to give

  1212. ourselves

  1213. in loving

  1214. serving

  1215. leadership

  1216. of our

  1217. wives

  1218. so that

  1219. through

  1220. our

  1221. love

  1222. they may

  1223. become

  1224. more

  1225. beautiful

  1226. on the

  1227. inside

  1228. potential

  1229. wives

  1230. never

  1231. settle

  1232. for anything

  1233. less

  1234. than a

  1235. husband

  1236. who will

  1237. give

  1238. themselves

  1239. in loving

  1240. serving

  1241. leadership

  1242. so that's

  1243. the design

  1244. of

  1245. head

  1246. ship

  1247. what about

  1248. the design

  1249. of

  1250. submission

  1251. the

  1252. wife

  1253. well the

  1254. wife's

  1255. submission

  1256. to the

  1257. husband

  1258. is again

  1259. modeled on

  1260. the church's

  1261. submission to

  1262. Christ

  1263. look at

  1264. Ephesians 5

    Ephesians 5:22

  1265. verse 22

  1266. and 24

  1267. wives

  1268. submit to

  1269. your husbands

  1270. as to

  1271. the Lord

  1272. verse 24

  1273. now as the

  1274. church submits

  1275. to Christ

  1276. so also

  1277. wives should

  1278. submit to

  1279. their husbands

  1280. in everything

  1281. now let's be

  1282. clear

  1283. submission if we

  1284. were to read

  1285. the whole context

  1286. of chapter 5

  1287. it starts by

  1288. telling us that

  1289. we are to

  1290. submit to

  1291. one another

  1292. verse 21

  1293. so submission

  1294. isn't just

  1295. for wives

  1296. just for women

  1297. we're all to

  1298. submit to

  1299. one another

  1300. in order

  1301. to submit to

  1302. God's design

  1303. and purposes

  1304. for us

  1305. and submission

  1306. is not about

  1307. obeying every

  1308. demand or

  1309. decree of

  1310. your husband

  1311. submission

  1312. is primarily

  1313. about obedience

  1314. to God's

  1315. order and

  1316. God's design

  1317. it's about

  1318. living life

  1319. as God

  1320. intended you

  1321. to live

  1322. this is his

  1323. best for you

  1324. in practice

  1325. wives it

  1326. means not

  1327. being insistent

  1328. on one's

  1329. rights

  1330. not always

  1331. pushy and

  1332. demanding

  1333. your own

  1334. way

  1335. but instead

  1336. becoming a

  1337. partner

  1338. instead coming

  1339. alongside your

  1340. husband and

  1341. encouraging him

  1342. on in his

  1343. role

  1344. John Stott has

  1345. put it well

  1346. like this he

  1347. says submission

  1348. to the husband's

  1349. role does not

  1350. mean living under

  1351. a tyranny of

  1352. oppression

  1353. compassion but

  1354. under his

  1355. responsibility

  1356. and care

  1357. so here we

  1358. have these

  1359. wonderful pictures

  1360. of what it is

  1361. to live in

  1362. God's design

  1363. together the

  1364. husband and

  1365. the wife paint

  1366. a beautiful

  1367. picture of the

  1368. gospel and

  1369. as we live

  1370. according to

  1371. God's design

  1372. they point

  1373. people around

  1374. them to the

  1375. love of

  1376. Christ and

  1377. how we

  1378. ought to

  1379. respond to

  1380. Christ

  1381. that's why

  1382. marriage is

  1383. so vital

  1384. as we go

  1385. about our

  1386. day every

  1387. day as we

  1388. go to work

  1389. as we live

  1390. amongst our

  1391. neighbours

  1392. our marriages

  1393. are on

  1394. display all

  1395. the time

  1396. our marriages

  1397. are out there

  1398. people are

  1399. looking at us

  1400. they are always

  1401. witnessing our

  1402. marriages are

  1403. always communicating

  1404. something to

  1405. everybody else

  1406. around us

  1407. and by God's

  1408. grace

  1409. we can

  1410. communicate

  1411. through our

  1412. marriage the

  1413. gospel of

  1414. Jesus Christ

  1415. people see a

  1416. visible picture

  1417. of Christ's

  1418. love for the

  1419. church as the

  1420. husband loves

  1421. his wife

  1422. and people

  1423. get to see

  1424. how we

  1425. should respond

  1426. to Christ

  1427. as the

  1428. wife submits

  1429. and supports

  1430. her husband

  1431. so men

  1432. and all

  1433. potential

  1434. husbands

  1435. take

  1436. responsibility

  1437. take this

  1438. calling

  1439. seriously

  1440. and lead

  1441. your marriages

  1442. well

  1443. and wives

  1444. take your

  1445. calling

  1446. seriously

  1447. and know

  1448. what it is

  1449. to submit

  1450. to your

  1451. husbands

  1452. in partnership

  1453. and may God

  1454. give us the

  1455. grace to live

  1456. out his

  1457. beautiful design

  1458. every single

  1459. day

  1460. let's pray

  1461. our father

  1462. God we

  1463. come to you

  1464. and

  1465. well we

  1466. acknowledge

  1467. perhaps we're

  1468. feeling

  1469. a little

  1470. bit

  1471. rebuked

  1472. and challenged

  1473. about your

  1474. your model

  1475. and your

  1476. design for

  1477. how we

  1478. should live

  1479. but thank

  1480. you for

  1481. your grace

  1482. that even

  1483. what we've

  1484. been looking

  1485. at reminds

  1486. us of

  1487. the gospel

  1488. the good

  1489. news of

  1490. Jesus

  1491. that we

  1492. can come

  1493. to him

  1494. time and

  1495. time again

  1496. and find

  1497. forgiveness

  1498. and find

  1499. the grace

  1500. and the

  1501. mercy

  1502. and the

  1503. way to

  1504. go on

  1505. living as

  1506. you call

  1507. us to

  1508. live

  1509. I pray

  1510. for every

  1511. marriage

  1512. represented

  1513. here

  1514. that you

  1515. would protect

  1516. them

  1517. and keep

  1518. them

  1519. enable each

  1520. husband here

  1521. to lead

  1522. his marriage

  1523. and his

  1524. family

  1525. well

  1526. may

  1527. every

  1528. wife

  1529. and

  1530. potential

  1531. wife

  1532. know what

  1533. it is

  1534. to live

  1535. alongside

  1536. their

  1537. husband

  1538. in

  1539. submission

  1540. in

  1541. partnership

  1542. and we

  1543. pray that

  1544. you would

  1545. give us

  1546. the grace

  1547. to do

  1548. this

  1549. and

  1550. ultimately

  1551. that it

  1552. may lead

  1553. and point

  1554. others

  1555. to

  1556. our

  1557. saviour

  1558. jesus

  1559. christ

  1560. so please

  1561. help us

  1562. and help us

  1563. all to be an

  1564. encouragement to

  1565. one another

  1566. we ask all

  1567. this in

  1568. jesus name

  1569. amen
