  1. Well, we've been looking at a series, Learning to Lead. We've looked at leading within the

  2. church, leading within marriage, and this morning we're looking at leaders in the home

  3. in particular, how that is for parents and their children. But before we do, let's pray.

  4. Father, thank you so much for the gift of children. We thank you for all that they bring to us

  5. as families and all that they give to us every day, the joy, the happiness. And we also recognise

  6. that raising children is not easy, it is hard, and therefore we need your wisdom and your help,

  7. and above all, the work of your Spirit in our lives to be the kind of parents that you call us to be.

  8. So please help us to learn from this, and to understand what it is to be good parents for our children.

  9. In Jesus' name. Amen.

  10. Now before we actually start, I should say that while this is directed at parents, those who have

  11. children, or those who are thinking of having children, I think it does apply to us all because

  12. we all have a responsibility towards the children within the family of the church. And I think what

  13. we look at here, there are principles here that apply to those who are teaching or helping at

  14. Sunday school, or those who are involved in creche, or are crusaders, and so on. So I hope that

  15. whatever stage of life we are at, that we can draw something from this. But nonetheless,

  16. this is directed primarily towards those who are parents. So, gift or curse? The chairman of the

  17. association of non-parents, that's a group that are deliberately against having children, and yes,

  18. such a group does exist. This is what the chairman says.

  19. I have never wanted to be a parent. I have never wanted that sort of responsibility.

  20. It is the fact that child-rearing goes on every day for so long. I just do not want to devote myself,

  21. in this way, to children. What do you think of that? Well, many couples agree. They have a lifestyle

  22. to enjoy, and careers to pursue, and having children just gets in the way. It's reflected throughout our

  23. society. Married people are having less children than before, simply because they take up too much time,

  24. and too much money. Those who do have children seem to have them later in life, after they've finished

  25. exploring life. Abortion is also an increasing option, as children, they say, interfere with,

  26. and complicates, an adult's life. So, to many, children are nothing more than a curse.

  27. But the Bible has a much more positive view on our children. Rather than a curse, children,

  28. all children, are a gift to be celebrated. Listen to this from Psalm 127, verse 3. It says,

    Psalms 127:3

  29. Sons and daughters are a heritage from the Lord. Children are a reward from Him. Or in Proverbs 17, 6,

  30. children's children are a crown to the aged. Grandchildren are wonderful.

  31. So, children are a wonderful gift from God, and have a special place in the purposes of God. They are a

  32. blessing and a reward, a joy and a treasure. So, rather than think our thoughts about children,

  33. children, we need to be people who think God's thoughts about children. We need to see that

  34. leading in our home, that's parenting, is not a chore to endure, but a privilege to enjoy.

  35. And we're going to look at three areas that Christian parents are to lead in their homes and families.

  36. First, we are to lead children to Christ. That's the primary role, responsibility of parents,

  37. to lead their children to Christ. So, look, Ephesians chapter 6, verse 1.

    Ephesians 6:1

  38. Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. And what are they to obey? Well, look at verse 4.

  39. For fathers, do not exasperate your children. Instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.

  40. So, children are to obey their parents in all things. Parents don't obey the children. Children,

  41. obey your parents in all things. In particular, they are to obey the teaching, that's the spiritual

  42. formation that the parents bring and give to their children. So, what does that look like? Well,

  43. negatively, verse 4 again, fathers, do not exasperate your children. Don't make them angry.

  44. Or as my wife often says to me, Johnny, will you stop annoying your children? Leave them alone.

  45. Do not be making harsh demands on them. Do this. Do that. Don't abuse your authority. They're not your slaves.

  46. Do not be unfair, constantly nagging, putting them down and comparing. I wish you weren't like this. I wish you were like them.

  47. Do not believe. Instead, look at verse 4. Bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.

  48. Make sure your child learns about Jesus from you.

  49. Paul has already given an example of this back in chapter 4.

  50. Here he is reminding the church of how they had become followers of Jesus. Look at chapter 4, verse 21.

  51. He reminds them, surely you heard of him, you heard of Jesus, and you were taught in him in accordance with the truth that is in Jesus.

  52. He says,

  53. You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which had been corrupted by its deceitful desires,

  54. to be made new in the attitude of your minds, and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.

  55. You are to teach them Christ just as you were taught about Christ. Somebody, your parents or someone, taught you Christ and encouraged you in Christ.

  56. They helped you grow in Christ. So we are not to put on demand and say, do this, do that and do the other. That's legalism.

  57. We are to bring them. We are to bring them up in Christ and to show them what it is to take off and to put on what it is to grow in Christ every day.

  58. Now, before we move on, did you notice the specific commands?

  59. Now, this, it seems, is part of God's good order and design for his people. It starts back in chapter 5, verse 21, where it says,

  60. Submit to submit to one another out of reverence for Christ. So God has this order, this design for life, for family.

  61. So husbands and wives are to submit to God. Wives are to submit to husbands. Children are to submit to their parents.

  62. Submission to God's order for family life.

  63. And God, within that order, has called fathers to be the primary teacher of the children, to be responsible for the spiritual input into their little lives.

  64. As we saw the other week, fathers and men in general have a habit of abdicating our authority.

  65. Well, God has given us children. He has entrusted us with children to teach them about Christ.

  66. That is our role and responsibility.

  67. We're not to assume that mum's going to do it, or that the church will do it, or somebody in Sunday school's going to do it.

  68. Fathers, you, I, we are to do it.

  69. And as fathers, we love to see our children learn new skills.

  70. We get excited when they take their first step.

  71. When they get out a toy drill and hammer and start trying to fix something.

  72. Or when they draw something and create something wonderful.

  73. In fact, we spend time teaching them these things.

  74. That's all good and crucial to their development.

  75. But it must never, never take the place of opening up the Bible with your son and daughter,

  76. sitting down with them and teaching them about Jesus.

  77. It doesn't get any better than that.

  78. The question is not, did you teach your son how to kick a football?

  79. Or did you teach your daughter how to work the computer?

  80. But did you bring your children up in the training and instruction of the Lord?

  81. Will you be remembered as parents?

  82. Will you be remembered as a father who brought your child up in the way of God?

  83. Not, are they Christians?

  84. Because that's God's job and we can never make our children Christians.

  85. But did you teach them?

  86. And did you pray for them?

  87. Well, that's the fathers.

  88. What about the mothers?

  89. What do they do?

  90. Well, mothers play a crucial part in this too.

  91. In Genesis chapter 2 verse 20, right at the beginning,

    Genesis 2:20

  92. we are told that God made, and here's the word, a suitable helper for Adam.

  93. And that helper we know was Eve, Adam's wife.

  94. And when we think helper, we don't mean a go-for, we are to think partnership.

  95. Tim Keller in his book The Meaning of Marriage puts it like this.

  96. To help someone is to make up what is lacking in them with your strength.

  97. To help someone does not imply the helper is stronger or the helped is weaker,

  98. simply that the husband's strength is inadequate by itself.

  99. Now, I think that helps understand what this role is for a mother to help the father.

  100. So, mothers who are here, the father of your children needs your support and help.

  101. This is not a task that they can do on their own.

  102. Yes, they are to be primarily responsible for all of this,

  103. but they are inadequate.

  104. They are lacking in strength.

  105. So, God has called you, the mum, the wife, not anybody else,

  106. to support your husband in their role.

  107. So, motherhood is not a second-rate role.

  108. Mothers are not second-class citizens,

  109. as if leaving their career and becoming a mother is kind of taking a lower position.

  110. It isn't.

  111. It is a high calling.

  112. It is a great calling.

  113. It is a wonderful gift from God.

  114. It is to be protected, to be valued, and it is to be treasured.

  115. So, mums, encourage your husbands as they lead their children to Christ.

  116. So, first, we are to lead children to Christ.

  117. Second, we are to lead children on mission.

  118. Look back to Genesis chapter 1 a minute.

    Genesis 1 chapter mention

  119. Genesis chapter 1 and verse 26.

    Genesis 1 chapter mention

  120. Let's read verse 26.

  121. Then God said,

  122. Let us make man in our image, in our likeness,

  123. and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air,

  124. over the livestock, over all the earth,

  125. and over all the creatures that move along the ground.

  126. So God created man in his own image.

  127. In the image of God he created them, male and female he created them.

  128. And God blessed them and said to them,

  129. Be fruitful and increase in number.

  130. Fill the earth and subdue it.

  131. Rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air,

  132. and over every living creature that moves on the ground.

  133. Here we have the first command of the Bible,

  134. which is given to the first husband and wife.

  135. And here it is, to rule over the earth.

  136. And the way to rule over the earth is to have children.

  137. Look at verse 28.

  138. God said to them,

  139. Be fruitful and increase in number.

  140. Fill the earth and subdue it.

  141. Rule over it.

  142. In other words,

  143. children are an integral part of God's mission.

  144. God's mission, his end goal, his plan,

  145. where it's all heading towards,

  146. is to have people from every nation

  147. living under his rule and authority.

  148. Ultimately, that is living under Jesus,

  149. who is God's promised king.

  150. This is what is best for us,

  151. for you, for me,

  152. and what is best for our world.

  153. Now, our job as parents

  154. is to lead children on this mission.

  155. We are to raise our children

  156. to live under the rule of Jesus

  157. so that they grow up themselves,

  158. they have families,

  159. so that they also live under the rule of Jesus.

  160. Look at Psalm 78.

  161. Psalm 78.

  162. Pick it up in verse 3.

  163. What we have heard and known,

  164. what our fathers have told us.

  165. We will not hide them from their children.

  166. We will tell the next generation

  167. the praiseworthy deeds of the Lord,

  168. his power,

  169. and the wonders he has done.

  170. Verse 6.

  171. You see,

  172. children are to be raised up,

  173. to be taught about Christ,

  174. who in turn tell their children about Christ

  175. and tell those who are yet to be born about Christ.

  176. This is all part of God's mission.

  177. Christopher Ash in his book

  178. Married for God says this,

  179. The Creator entrusts to married couples

  180. the awesome privilege and responsibility

  181. of procreating potential disciples

  182. to join his team.

  183. We are to work,

  184. teach,

  185. discipline,

  186. and pray that they will grow

  187. into disciples

  188. who learn to love God

  189. and care for his world.

  190. Of course, as parents,

  191. we all have different plans

  192. and dreams for our children,

  193. not least a good education

  194. and a great career.

  195. In fact, parents make great sacrifices.

  196. They spend a lot of money

  197. to ensure their children

  198. are given the best opportunity

  199. in life to succeed.

  200. But parents,

  201. never let career and education

  202. be the driving motivation

  203. in your child's life.

  204. Instead, let the grand mission of God

  205. shape, mould, and drive

  206. your child's future.

  207. Don't limit the vision of your child

  208. to a philosophy of,

  209. well, son,

  210. just work hard,

  211. get a job,

  212. find a wife,

  213. get a mortgage,

  214. and settle down.

  215. Give them a vision of God's mission.

  216. That Jesus Christ

  217. has reconciled

  218. all things to himself

  219. through the cross,

  220. and that one day

  221. Jesus Christ

  222. is going to come again,

  223. and he's going to renew

  224. and restore this broken

  225. and suffering world,

  226. and one day

  227. every human being

  228. is going to bow

  229. before his rule.

  230. That is the mission.

  231. That is the vision.

  232. That is what we are to be

  233. raising our children up to

  234. and being involved in.

  235. So whatever your job,

  236. or whatever job or career

  237. your child should choose,

  238. pray that they will do it

  239. motivated by God's mission.

  240. That they will live and work

  241. under God's rule.

  242. That they would use their gifts

  243. and their resources

  244. to see that the mission of God

  245. is worked out

  246. in their workplaces

  247. and within their homes.

  248. Pray that your child

  249. would even take their career

  250. and their work

  251. and go amongst a people

  252. who do not yet know Christ.

  253. Pray that your child

  254. would be willing to go

  255. and risk their life,

  256. even that they would

  257. be willing to lay down

  258. their life for Christ

  259. in a place that is hostile

  260. to the mission of God.

  261. Will you dare to do that

  262. for your children?

  263. If God has given you children,

  264. he has given you

  265. the awesome privilege

  266. and responsibility

  267. of leading your family

  268. on mission.

  269. So first,

  270. we are to lead

  271. our children to Christ.

  272. Second,

  273. we are to lead children

  274. on mission.

  275. And third,

  276. we are to lead children

  277. with grace.

  278. Yes,

  279. children need grace.

  280. parents.

  281. But I want to apply this

  282. particularly to parents.

  283. Parents,

  284. we need lots of grace.

  285. I watched a documentary

  286. recently about an Olympian.

  287. For 12 years,

  288. she was at the top

  289. of her game,

  290. finishing in the medals

  291. year after year,

  292. training six days a week,

  293. running,

  294. going to the weights gym,

  295. working on the technique.

  296. every aspect of her sport

  297. was strengthened

  298. and paid attention to.

  299. Now she's retired

  300. and she recently

  301. had a baby.

  302. And on reflection,

  303. she said this

  304. as she was sitting

  305. on the floor

  306. surrounded by toys

  307. and a little toddler

  308. sitting on her knee.

  309. And this is what she said.

  310. Being an Olympian

  311. is much easier

  312. than being a mum.

  313. So all the mums out there,

  314. you are an Olympian.

  315. You deserve

  316. a gold medal.

  317. In fact,

  318. what I want

  319. all the dads to do

  320. is to go home

  321. and to build

  322. one of these little boxes

  323. with one,

  324. two and three on it.

  325. A little podium.

  326. I want you to put it outside

  327. and every evening

  328. mums,

  329. you're to go outside

  330. and you're to stand

  331. in number one position.

  332. And one by one

  333. your children

  334. are going to walk by

  335. and hang gold medals

  336. around your neck

  337. because you are an Olympian

  338. and you deserve it.

  339. Being a mum,

  340. being a parent,

  341. is hard work

  342. physically,

  343. emotionally

  344. and spiritually.

  345. And because it's so hard,

  346. we often feel

  347. a failure,

  348. don't we?

  349. We feel like

  350. we're coming last

  351. in the race,

  352. crawling over the line

  353. rather than finishing first

  354. and doing a lap of honour.

  355. Maybe it's because

  356. your child

  357. is not interested

  358. in Christ

  359. or has turned away

  360. from Christ

  361. and you feel

  362. a failure.

  363. Perhaps you're struggling

  364. with the changing

  365. demands of your child

  366. and what they want

  367. and what they need

  368. and you just feel

  369. too weak.

  370. Perhaps you can't

  371. even manage

  372. your own self,

  373. never mind the needs

  374. and the demands

  375. of your children

  376. and you feel

  377. inadequate.

  378. That's why

  379. we need to rest

  380. in the abundant,

  381. overflowing

  382. grace

  383. of God.

  384. Now there's no

  385. particular passages

  386. or verses

  387. that are speaking

  388. directly to parents

  389. in this

  390. but I think

  391. there are principles

  392. that we can draw

  393. out from Scripture

  394. for parents

  395. in regards

  396. to

  397. the need

  398. for God's grace

  399. in parenting.

  400. So three things.

  401. First,

  402. grace

  403. for our failures.

  404. Romans chapter 5.

    Romans 5 chapter mention

  405. Grace

  406. for our failures.

  407. Go to Romans chapter 5.

    Romans 5 chapter mention

  408. As parents

  409. we often fail.

  410. We say

  411. the wrong things

  412. and we do

  413. the wrong things.

  414. And hardly

  415. a day goes past

  416. and we get

  417. to the end

  418. and we think

  419. I wish

  420. we could start

  421. the day

  422. again.

  423. I wish

  424. I hadn't said

  425. I wish

  426. I hadn't

  427. done it

  428. that way.

  429. You see

  430. it's hard work

  431. isn't it?

  432. There are no

  433. practice runs

  434. and as a result

  435. we mess up

  436. big time.

  437. But the good

  438. news is

  439. no matter

  440. how great

  441. our failures

  442. God's grace

  443. is greater.

  444. Look at

  445. Romans 5

    Romans 5:17

  446. verse 17.

  447. Here it's

  448. talking about

  449. the consequences

  450. the knock

  451. on effects

  452. of our sin.

  453. It says

  454. verse 17

  455. for if

  456. by the

  457. trespass

  458. of the

  459. one man

  460. death

  461. reign

  462. through

  463. that

  464. one

  465. man

  466. how much

  467. more

  468. will those

  469. who receive

  470. God's

  471. abundant

  472. provision

  473. of grace

  474. and of the

  475. gift of

  476. righteousness

  477. reign in life

  478. through that

  479. one man

  480. Jesus Christ.

  481. In other words

  482. he's saying

  483. look

  484. if your

  485. failures

  486. are great.

  487. How much

  488. more

  489. greater

  490. is God's

  491. grace

  492. to you?

  493. If our

  494. failures

  495. make a

  496. mess

  497. how much

  498. more

  499. does God's

  500. grace

  501. redeem

  502. and restore

  503. that mess

  504. and all

  505. that failure

  506. and turn

  507. it into

  508. something

  509. beautiful.

  510. The chapter

  511. 5 verse

  512. 20

  513. the second

  514. part

  515. but where

  516. sin

  517. increased

  518. grace

  519. increased

  520. all

  521. the more.

  522. We can

  523. put our

  524. hands up

  525. and admit

  526. that we

  527. fail.

  528. There's

  529. nothing wrong

  530. with saying

  531. that we

  532. fail

  533. because it's

  534. only as we

  535. admit

  536. our failures

  537. that we

  538. can receive

  539. the abundant

  540. grace

  541. of God

  542. to redeem

  543. and restore

  544. our mess

  545. and turn

  546. it into

  547. something

  548. beautiful.

  549. As parents

  550. we're not

  551. to keep

  552. a record

  553. of the

  554. past.

  555. We're not

  556. to wake

  557. up each

  558. day and

  559. think I

  560. wish I

  561. could start

  562. again or

  563. I wish I

  564. should have

  565. done this

  566. or I

  567. could have

  568. done that.

  569. God's

  570. grace

  571. covers the

  572. past.

  573. He gives

  574. us grace

  575. for today

  576. and his

  577. grace

  578. is going

  579. to take

  580. care of

  581. the future.

  582. So first

  583. grace for

  584. our failures.

  585. Second

  586. grace in

  587. our weaknesses.

  588. Look at

  589. 2 Corinthians

    2 Corinthians 12 chapter mention

  590. chapter 12.

  591. 2 Corinthians

    2 Corinthians 12 chapter mention

  592. chapter 12.

  593. As parents

  594. we often

  595. feel very

  596. weak.

  597. The demands

  598. and pressures

  599. of babies

  600. and teenagers

  601. is draining.

  602. Parents,

  603. listen to this.

  604. You are

  605. full-time

  606. carers

  607. and

  608. counsellors.

  609. You're

  610. relationship

  611. advisors

  612. and law

  613. enforcers.

  614. You're

  615. a taxi

  616. driver,

  617. a lending

  618. agency,

  619. you're

  620. peacemakers

  621. and a

  622. party

  623. organiser.

  624. You're

  625. a personal

  626. assistant,

  627. a guidance

  628. counsellor,

  629. you're a

  630. doctor,

  631. you're a

  632. nurse,

  633. the list

  634. goes on

  635. and on.

  636. You're

  637. qualified for

  638. all of

  639. these

  640. tasks.

  641. And you

  642. love to

  643. do it.

  644. You love

  645. to play

  646. that role.

  647. Why?

  648. Because

  649. these are

  650. your

  651. children.

  652. You love

  653. them.

  654. You want

  655. to give

  656. to them.

  657. them.

  658. But as

  659. parents,

  660. there are

  661. times we

  662. just feel

  663. inadequate

  664. and unable.

  665. The task

  666. is just

  667. too big

  668. and we're

  669. too weak

  670. and it

  671. all becomes

  672. overwhelming

  673. and we

  674. just sit

  675. down

  676. and cry.

  677. But

  678. parenting

  679. is not

  680. something to

  681. do in our

  682. own strength.

  683. Yes,

  684. if God

  685. has blessed

  686. the family

  687. home in

  688. such a

  689. way that

  690. there's a

  691. mother and

  692. a father,

  693. there is

  694. that support.

  695. But we

  696. don't rely

  697. upon each

  698. other.

  699. We rely

  700. upon the

  701. grace of

  702. God.

  703. Look at

  704. 2 Corinthians

    2 Corinthians 12:9

  705. 12,

  706. verse 9.

  707. This is

  708. talking here

  709. about Paul's

  710. pressures,

  711. the demands

  712. upon him,

  713. his sense

  714. of feeling

  715. weak,

  716. and God's

  717. grace to

  718. strengthen

  719. him.

  720. Verse 9,

  721. God said

  722. to me,

  723. my grace

  724. is sufficient

  725. for you.

  726. My power

  727. is made

  728. perfect

  729. in weakness.

  730. Therefore,

  731. I will boast

  732. all the more

  733. gladly about

  734. my weaknesses,

  735. so that

  736. Christ's power

  737. may rest

  738. on me.

  739. That is

  740. why,

  741. for Christ's

  742. sake,

  743. I delight

  744. in weaknesses,

  745. in insults,

  746. in hardships,

  747. in persecutions,

  748. in difficulties,

  749. for when

  750. I am weak,

  751. then I am

  752. strong.

  753. Did you catch

  754. it?

  755. My grace

  756. is sufficient

  757. for you.

  758. Rather than

  759. battle on

  760. on our

  761. own,

  762. we are to

  763. throw ourselves

  764. in our

  765. dependence

  766. on God,

  767. in our

  768. complete

  769. weakness,

  770. throw ourselves

  771. on God's

  772. grace,

  773. who strengthens

  774. us,

  775. and equips

  776. us,

  777. and will

  778. enable us

  779. for the

  780. task of

  781. parenting.

  782. My grace

  783. is sufficient

  784. for you.

  785. My power

  786. is made

  787. perfect

  788. in your

  789. weakness.

  790. So,

  791. grace for

  792. our

  793. failures,

  794. grace

  795. in our

  796. weakness.

  797. And then

  798. the last

  799. one is

  800. grace

  801. to our

  802. children.

  803. You see,

  804. when we

  805. draw on

  806. God's

  807. grace

  808. in our

  809. failures

  810. and in

  811. our

  812. weaknesses,

  813. we are

  814. in a

  815. position to

  816. give

  817. God's

  818. grace to

  819. our

  820. children.

  821. It's

  822. only when

  823. we are

  824. filled with

  825. God's

  826. grace,

  827. that we

  828. in turn

  829. are able

  830. to give

  831. God's

  832. grace.

  833. Look at

  834. 2 Corinthians

  835. 9,

  836. back a

  837. couple of

  838. pages,

  839. 2 Corinthians

    2 Corinthians 9:8

  840. 9,

  841. verse 8.

  842. The context

  843. here is

  844. about

  845. financial

  846. giving.

  847. As God

  848. has given

  849. us so

  850. much and

  851. blessed us

  852. so much

  853. by his

  854. grace,

  855. so we

  856. are people

  857. who are

  858. to overflow

  859. of giving

  860. to those

  861. around us.

  862. But listen

  863. to this,

  864. chapter 2

    2 Corinthians 9:8

  865. Corinthians 9,

  866. verse 8.

  867. And God

  868. is able

  869. to make

  870. all grace

  871. abound to

  872. you,

  873. so that

  874. in all

  875. things,

  876. at all

  877. times,

  878. having all

  879. that you

  880. need,

  881. you will

  882. abound

  883. in every

  884. good

  885. work.

  886. do you

  887. see the

  888. promise

  889. here from

  890. God?

  891. That we

  892. will have

  893. all the

  894. grace that

  895. we need

  896. to parent

  897. our children.

  898. Every

  899. circumstance,

  900. every day,

  901. every incident,

  902. every demand,

  903. every pressure,

  904. whatever stage

  905. of life our

  906. children are

  907. at,

  908. whatever,

  909. anything that

  910. happens in

  911. their life.

  912. God is

  913. able to

  914. make all

  915. grace

  916. abound to

  917. you,

  918. in all

  919. things,

  920. at all

  921. times,

  922. having all

  923. that you

  924. need.

  925. God

  926. pours his

  927. grace

  928. into

  929. our lives,

  930. so that

  931. we, in

  932. turn, can

  933. fill our

  934. children's

  935. lives with

  936. the grace

  937. of Jesus

  938. Christ.

  939. We need

  940. to

  941. swim,

  942. we need

  943. to jump

  944. in,

  945. into the

  946. overwhelming

  947. abundance

  948. of God's

  949. grace.

  950. Every

  951. day,

  952. in our

  953. failures,

  954. and in

  955. our

  956. weaknesses,

  957. to draw

  958. upon it,

  959. to drink

  960. it in,

  961. so that

  962. we can

  963. give

  964. his grace

  965. to our

  966. children.

  967. The

  968. grace to

  969. lead them

  970. to Christ,

  971. and the

  972. grace to

  973. lead them

  974. on mission.

  975. Let's

  976. pray.

  977. Our

  978. Father God,

  979. we

  980. recognise

  981. that the

  982. gift of

  983. children

  984. is an

  985. amazing

  986. privilege.

  987. It's a

  988. wonderful

  989. joy,

  990. but we

  991. also

  992. recognise

  993. that there

  994. is a

  995. great

  996. responsibility.

  997. The

  998. task

  999. is

  1000. huge.

  1001. We

  1002. feel

  1003. weak,

  1004. we

  1005. feel

  1006. inadequate,

  1007. we

  1008. so

  1009. often

  1010. fail,

  1011. but yet

  1012. we

  1013. come

  1014. again

  1015. to

  1016. receive

  1017. afresh

  1018. your

  1019. amazing

  1020. grace.

  1021. And I

  1022. pray for

  1023. each

  1024. parent

  1025. here,

  1026. that you

  1027. would fill

  1028. them with

  1029. your grace,

  1030. that you

  1031. would remind

  1032. them that

  1033. their past

  1034. is forgiven,

  1035. and that

  1036. you will

  1037. take care

  1038. of the

  1039. future,

  1040. that you

  1041. will equip

  1042. every home

  1043. with all

  1044. that they

  1045. need to

  1046. raise their

  1047. children to

  1048. follow you.

  1049. And we

  1050. pray for

  1051. every child

  1052. represented

  1053. here, for

  1054. children who

  1055. are yet to

  1056. be born

  1057. within the

  1058. family of

  1059. this church,

  1060. that they

  1061. will learn

  1062. about

  1063. Christ.

  1064. And we

  1065. ask you,

  1066. Father, in

  1067. your mercy

  1068. and in

  1069. your grace,

  1070. that they

  1071. will follow

  1072. you, and

  1073. that they

  1074. will love

  1075. you.

  1076. And we

  1077. pray that

  1078. every child

  1079. will grow

  1080. up, and

  1081. in God's

  1082. goodness that

  1083. they too

  1084. would have

  1085. families that

  1086. will walk in

  1087. the mission

  1088. of God.

  1089. We pray

  1090. that children

  1091. here will

  1092. be those

  1093. who go with

  1094. their careers

  1095. and their

  1096. work to

  1097. places and

  1098. to people

  1099. who do

  1100. not yet

  1101. know

  1102. Christ,

  1103. whether

  1104. that's

  1105. locally or

  1106. whether that's

  1107. far away.

  1108. But we

  1109. pray that

  1110. you would

  1111. use us

  1112. as families,

  1113. and we

  1114. pray your

  1115. blessing upon

  1116. parents.

  1117. we thank

  1118. you for

  1119. your grace.

  1120. In

  1121. Jesus' name

  1122. we all

  1123. pray.

  1124. Amen.
