  1. And the second reading is from Romans 13 verses 1 to 7 and that's on page 1140.

    Romans 13:1–7

  2. So that's Romans 13 verses 1 to 7.

    Romans 13:1–7

  3. Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except

  4. that which God has established.

  5. The authorities that exist have been established by God.

  6. Consequently, he who rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted

  7. and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves.

  8. For rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those who do wrong.

  9. Do you want to be free from fear of the one in authority?

  10. Then do what is right and he will commend you.

  11. For he is God's servant to do you good.

  12. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword for nothing.

  13. He is God's servant, an agent of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer.

  14. Therefore, it is necessary to submit to the authorities, not only because of possible punishment,

  15. but also because of conscience.

  16. This is also why you pay taxes.

  17. For the authorities are God's servants who give their full time to governing.

  18. Give everyone what you owe him.

  19. If you owe taxes, pay taxes.

  20. If revenue, then revenue.

  21. If respect, then respect.

  22. If honour, then honour.

  23. Thanks very much.

  24. Well, please keep Bibles open there at Romans chapter 13.

    Romans 13 chapter mention

  25. And for those who want to take notes.

  26. So as Peter's doing that, just to remind you, this is a short series we've been doing on leading,

  27. learning to lead, and we've been looking at leaders within marriage, leaders within home,

  28. leaders within the church, and this morning we're looking at leaders within our community.

  29. And I recognise that in preparation, part of this, particularly the last part of it, is a lot of application.

  30. And I hope that it will provoke conversation, discussion amongst us,

  31. but also that that discussion would also lead into action as well.

  32. And just to encourage you as well, if you've missed out on any of these talks,

  33. you can listen to them online.

  34. And they're there for our encouragement as well.

  35. So, Romans 13, 1-7, leaders in our community.

  36. Let's pray.

  37. Our Father, we thank you for people in the past,

  38. for leaders like the Apostle Paul,

  39. who were given the task and responsibility of writing your word down.

  40. And we thank you that we now have that word,

  41. preserved for us in our own language,

  42. that we can learn from ourselves.

  43. And we pray that you would help us today as a church to understand

  44. what it is for us to be leaders within our community

  45. and how we should respond to those who are leaders in our community.

  46. Encourage us, and may it be used by you,

  47. to further your gospel

  48. and the building up of your kingdom.

  49. In Jesus' name.

  50. Amen.

  51. Amen.

  52. Well, we start with a question.

  53. Who will lead?

  54. Well, a little over a year ago,

  55. we were calling for the removal of our past government.

  56. We wanted them out.

  57. But now that we've got a new government,

  58. a coalition,

  59. it seems that we're still not happy.

  60. According to a recent survey,

  61. which was just conducted just after the referendum,

  62. 75% of the country are now dissatisfied with the government's performance.

  63. Being a leader is not easy,

  64. as Enda Kenny is discovering.

  65. And despite winning the referendum,

  66. getting the yes vote as they campaigned,

  67. his popularity and his party have all lost significant points in recent weeks.

  68. But who would you want to take his place?

  69. What party would you choose to be in their place?

  70. Who could do any better?

  71. For most of us,

  72. we rather like to sit on the sidelines with the majority of the country,

  73. point fingers and complain.

  74. But I want to encourage us this morning to think about,

  75. what about us?

  76. People like us getting involved and making a difference.

  77. I'm not promoting any particular political party that you should be signing up to,

  78. but what I am encouraging is active involvement,

  79. locally and nationally.

  80. Some people have perhaps been brought up on the view that

  81. the church should remain separate from the state.

  82. Others say that the church should rule the state.

  83. Not sure what your views are on that,

  84. but I think the Bible is somewhere in the middle.

  85. And it's saying that as far as Christians are concerned,

  86. our country and our community needs leadership

  87. and Christians ought to play their part in it.

  88. And that's what we want to encourage this morning.

  89. So we're going to look at two main things.

  90. First of all, leadership is a wonderful gift from God.

  91. Look at chapter 13, verse 1.

  92. We'll read there.

  93. Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities,

  94. for there is no authority except that which God has established.

  95. The authorities that exist have been established by God.

  96. Consequently, he who rebels against the authority

  97. is rebelling against what God has instituted.

  98. So I think it's quite clear that the governing authorities,

  99. the government that we have today in our country

  100. and within our community,

  101. have been put in place by God.

  102. Jesus himself recognised this fact

  103. when he was brought before Pilate on trial.

  104. And he turns to Pilate and he says to him,

  105. you would have no power over me

  106. if it were not given to you from above.

  107. So any political party,

  108. any authority that is in place

  109. is only there because God has allowed it.

  110. Now while we recognise,

  111. and we're going to look at this in more detail in a minute,

  112. that many who are leaders

  113. abuse their position and power,

  114. the institution,

  115. the idea of governing authority

  116. is something good from God.

  117. It is good for us

  118. and it is good for our society.

  119. I know the Leaving Cert is on at the minute

  120. and I don't want to draw too much attention to it,

  121. but when I did my Leaving Cert a few years ago,

  122. the book that we had to read and study

  123. on the English syllabus was

  124. William Golding's Lord of the Flies.

  125. I don't know if any of you ever read that one.

  126. Well, for me it was a bit of a haze

  127. as I just looked out the window

  128. for most of the classes

  129. and wondered what it was all about.

  130. But I did remember something about the big idea.

  131. The ringleader, I think, was a guy called Ralph.

  132. But no associations there anyway.

  133. But I do remember this,

  134. that it was all about a group of these

  135. well-educated British boys

  136. who were on the plane

  137. and they crash-landed on an island.

  138. And without supervision of adults

  139. or any other kind of leadership,

  140. disorder and chaos

  141. began to reign amongst these children.

  142. The eldest was only 13.

  143. And they all began to fight

  144. and bully and form different rival groups.

  145. And very quickly,

  146. one of the children

  147. actually gets killed.

  148. Ironically, the one who is killed,

  149. he seems to be the weakest one,

  150. his name was Piggy,

  151. had asked all the rest of the boys this question.

  152. Which is better,

  153. to have rules and agree

  154. or to go hunting and breaking things up?

  155. They had him removed.

  156. I think the book is a social comment

  157. on what happens

  158. when we remove leadership

  159. from society.

  160. Anarchy.

  161. All hell breaks loose.

  162. There's disorder and chaos

  163. all around us.

  164. So we must not reject leadership.

  165. Instead, we must recognise

  166. that leadership

  167. is actually a good thing

  168. from God

  169. to bring stability

  170. and order

  171. to our lives

  172. and to our country.

  173. And because leadership

  174. is from God,

  175. we must learn

  176. to submit

  177. to those

  178. who are in leadership.

  179. Look at verse 1.

  180. That's how it starts.

  181. Everyone

  182. must submit himself

  183. to the governing authorities.

  184. What?

  185. I have to submit myself

  186. to end a Kenny?

  187. Yes, you do.

  188. Submission

  189. to our leaders

  190. is actually

  191. an expression

  192. of our ultimate

  193. submission to God.

  194. And we've come across

  195. this idea of submission

  196. as we've worked through

  197. the whole idea

  198. of learning to lead.

  199. It means,

  200. submission simply means

  201. to live under God's

  202. good order

  203. and God's

  204. good design.

  205. So we looked at

  206. wives having to submit

  207. to husbands,

  208. children having to submit

  209. to parents.

  210. All of us

  211. have to submit

  212. to those

  213. who are in

  214. positions of authority,

  215. in governance.

  216. And submission

  217. isn't a sign of weakness,

  218. but a willingness

  219. to live God's way.

  220. So all of us

  221. are called

  222. to submit

  223. to the governing

  224. authorities

  225. in our country

  226. and community.

  227. Now before we move on,

  228. let me just

  229. have a sidetrack here.

  230. Do you remember

  231. our reading in Acts?

  232. Peter

  233. had just

  234. brought about

  235. this healing

  236. and the authorities

  237. told Peter

  238. to stop preaching,

  239. to stop teaching

  240. in the name of Jesus.

  241. And what did Peter say?

  242. He says,

  243. we cannot help

  244. but preach.

  245. We must obey God

  246. rather than men.

  247. So when it talks

  248. about submission

  249. to authorities,

  250. yes we must

  251. submit to our

  252. authorities,

  253. but when

  254. what the authorities

  255. say come

  256. into contradiction

  257. with what God

  258. has to say,

  259. then we must

  260. choose to obey

  261. God

  262. over our leaders.

  263. But on the whole

  264. the point here

  265. is that we should

  266. submit

  267. to those

  268. who are in authority.

  269. And this point

  270. is made stronger

  271. in verse 2.

  272. Consequently,

  273. he who rebels

  274. against the authority

  275. is rebelling

  276. against what

  277. God has instituted.

  278. And those who do so

  279. will bring judgment

  280. on themselves.

  281. So to rebel

  282. against your leaders

  283. is actually

  284. to rebel

  285. against God.

  286. That's how

  287. closely knit

  288. they are.

  289. Not to submit

  290. to your government

  291. and to the decisions

  292. and the policies

  293. they make

  294. is actually

  295. a willful expression

  296. of I'm not

  297. submitting to God.

  298. Because that's

  299. how law and order

  300. happen.

  301. breaks down.

  302. Verse 6

  303. is a good example.

  304. This is also

  305. why you pay taxes.

  306. For the authorities

  307. are God's servants

  308. who give their time,

  309. their full time

  310. to governing.

  311. And we all know

  312. and we all complain

  313. about it

  314. and we all give off

  315. about it

  316. how we all have

  317. to pay tax.

  318. And we're going

  319. to have to pay

  320. more tax.

  321. Not least

  322. the recent

  323. household tax.

  324. How many of you

  325. like me

  326. thought

  327. I'm not going

  328. to pay that.

  329. I'm not going

  330. to sign up.

  331. Did you?

  332. Well,

  333. we mightn't agree

  334. with it

  335. but our governing

  336. authorities

  337. have decided

  338. that this is

  339. what is good

  340. for us.

  341. This is what is

  342. right and best

  343. for our country.

  344. So in an expression

  345. of our submission

  346. to God

  347. we register,

  348. we put our names

  349. and our addresses

  350. and we will

  351. pay our household

  352. tax.

  353. So leadership

  354. is a good gift

  355. from God

  356. and as an expression

  357. of our love

  358. and our commitment

  359. and our obedience

  360. to God

  361. we submit to those

  362. in authority.

  363. It's good for us

  364. and it's good

  365. for our society.

  366. So that's the first

  367. thing,

  368. that leadership

  369. is a good gift

  370. from God.

  371. Secondly,

  372. leadership

  373. is an exercise

  374. of grace.

  375. It's a gift

  376. of grace.

  377. Look at verse 3.

  378. For rulers

  379. hold no terror

  380. for those

  381. who do right

  382. but for those

  383. who do wrong.

  384. Do you want

  385. to be free

  386. from fear

  387. of the one

  388. in authority?

  389. Then do

  390. what is right

  391. and he will

  392. commend you.

  393. For he is

  394. God's servant

  395. to do you good

  396. but if you do

  397. wrong be afraid

  398. for he does not

  399. bear the sword

  400. for nothing.

  401. He is God's

  402. servant

  403. an agent

  404. of wrath

  405. to bring punishment

  406. on the wrongdoer.

  407. So those

  408. in position

  409. of power

  410. and authority

  411. the governing

  412. authorities

  413. as they're

  414. called here

  415. are not only

  416. put in place

  417. by God

  418. they are actually

  419. called servants

  420. of God.

  421. In other words

  422. they are to act

  423. on behalf

  424. of God.

  425. So leadership

  426. doesn't mean

  427. you do as you

  428. choose

  429. and you do

  430. whatever you like

  431. to the people

  432. under you.

  433. No it means

  434. that we are to

  435. exercise

  436. God's character.

  437. Leaders

  438. are to be

  439. people

  440. who lead

  441. with grace.

  442. So the decisions

  443. that they make

  444. are to be good

  445. for the people

  446. and to be good

  447. for society.

  448. And we've already

  449. mentioned that

  450. many who do

  451. get into positions

  452. of leadership

  453. abuse their

  454. position and power

  455. and they bring

  456. a lot of harm

  457. to people.

  458. As Paul is

  459. writing this

  460. we know

  461. that it's

  462. not too far

  463. off

  464. when Nero

  465. becomes

  466. leader

  467. over Rome.

  468. He was the one

  469. who would

  470. persecute

  471. Christians

  472. who would

  473. blame Christians

  474. for the burning

  475. of Rome.

  476. He would do

  477. terrible things

  478. to the people

  479. but yet he is

  480. still saying

  481. to the believers

  482. submit yourself

  483. to those

  484. who are in

  485. authority.

  486. We saw

  487. it last year

  488. in Libya

  489. with the brutal

  490. regime of

  491. Colonel Gaddafi.

  492. We see it

  493. right now

  494. in Syria

  495. as we watch

  496. the news

  497. of President

  498. Bashir Assad

  499. as he watched

  500. the indiscriminate

  501. killing of his

  502. own people

  503. women and

  504. children.

  505. So we recognise

  506. there are many

  507. people who are

  508. in positions

  509. of leadership

  510. who abuse

  511. their authority

  512. and cause a lot

  513. of harm.

  514. That does happen.

  515. And we don't

  516. need to look

  517. outside our own

  518. country for example

  519. we've got our

  520. own gangsters

  521. and villains.

  522. They may wear

  523. collars and

  524. ties but

  525. they still

  526. cause damage

  527. and they've

  528. brought our

  529. own country

  530. into a terrible

  531. mess.

  532. But again

  533. I think the

  534. general principle

  535. and we shouldn't

  536. lose this here

  537. is that it is

  538. God's intention

  539. God's desire

  540. that those

  541. who are in

  542. leadership

  543. would express

  544. God's character

  545. character in

  546. their decisions

  547. and in their

  548. policy making.

  549. They are God's

  550. servants

  551. to do good.

  552. They are to be

  553. as we might

  554. call them

  555. servants

  556. of God's

  557. grace.

  558. They are to see

  559. that God's

  560. grace gets

  561. worked out

  562. in society.

  563. We see this

  564. in two ways.

  565. Look at verse

  566. 4.

  567. For he is

  568. God's servant

  569. to do you

  570. good.

  571. But if you

  572. do wrong

  573. be afraid

  574. for he does

  575. not bear the

  576. sword for

  577. nothing.

  578. He is God's

  579. servant, an

  580. agent of wrath

  581. to bring punishment

  582. on the wrongdoer.

  583. Now whether

  584. there's an

  585. argument here

  586. for corporal

  587. punishment

  588. you can discuss

  589. that afterwards.

  590. I'm not bringing

  591. that into this

  592. now but what

  593. I want us to

  594. see here

  595. is that

  596. governing

  597. authorities

  598. have a

  599. dual role.

  600. They are both

  601. to protect

  602. the people

  603. and they are

  604. to punish

  605. the people.

  606. They are to

  607. protect the

  608. people from

  609. injustice

  610. and they are

  611. to punish

  612. those who

  613. are unjust.

  614. That is why

  615. there are

  616. leaders in

  617. society.

  618. Leaders are

  619. put in place

  620. by God

  621. to stand up

  622. for the weak

  623. for the

  624. vulnerable

  625. and for

  626. the marginalized

  627. and leaders

  628. have been

  629. put in place

  630. by God

  631. to deal

  632. with the

  633. greedy

  634. the unjust

  635. and those

  636. who exploit.

  637. And all

  638. of this

  639. when it

  640. begins to

  641. work as

  642. it should

  643. do

  644. is actually

  645. an expression

  646. of God's

  647. greater

  648. and general

  649. grace

  650. in action.

  651. It's a

  652. working out

  653. of God's

  654. character

  655. in society.

  656. So for

  657. example today

  658. the most

  659. vulnerable

  660. in our

  661. society

  662. within our

  663. community

  664. are those

  665. who are

  666. on low

  667. incomes

  668. single

  669. parent

  670. families

  671. and

  672. immigrants.

  673. And so

  674. we should

  675. expect that

  676. our leaders

  677. are working

  678. towards their

  679. protection and

  680. care and

  681. that they

  682. should be

  683. seeking to

  684. bring justice

  685. on those

  686. who exploit

  687. and those

  688. who pay

  689. below minimum

  690. wages.

  691. And we get

  692. an example

  693. of this

  694. in verse

  695. 7.

  696. So he

  697. says give

  698. everyone

  699. what you

  700. owe him.

  701. If you

  702. owe taxes

  703. pay taxes.

  704. If revenue

  705. then revenue.

  706. If respect

  707. then respect.

  708. If honour

  709. then honour.

  710. Because we

  711. know that

  712. part of our

  713. tax system

  714. and our

  715. revenue is

  716. to help

  717. those who

  718. are for

  719. whatever

  720. reason

  721. are unable

  722. to provide

  723. for themselves.

  724. It's a

  725. good system

  726. that we

  727. have within

  728. our country.

  729. And the

  730. governing

  731. authorities

  732. are to

  733. be responsible

  734. to ensure

  735. that those

  736. who can

  737. pay do

  738. pay and

  739. we should

  740. support them.

  741. But they

  742. should also

  743. punish those

  744. who abuse

  745. the system

  746. and milk

  747. the system

  748. and that

  749. they are

  750. equally

  751. dealt with.

  752. So leadership

  753. is not

  754. something to

  755. kind of

  756. point fingers

  757. and complain

  758. about and

  759. give off

  760. about.

  761. Leadership

  762. is a

  763. gift of

  764. grace.

  765. It's a

  766. working out

  767. of God's

  768. character

  769. within society.

  770. So leadership

  771. is a good

  772. gift from

  773. God and

  774. it is a

  775. gift of

  776. grace.

  777. But what

  778. does that

  779. mean for

  780. you and

  781. for I?

  782. Well I

  783. think it's

  784. this.

  785. Third, that

  786. we should

  787. be leaders

  788. in our

  789. community.

  790. It's a

  791. calling for

  792. Christian

  793. leadership

  794. locally

  795. and nationally.

  796. if leadership

  797. is a gift

  798. from God

  799. to society

  800. and if

  801. leadership

  802. is a

  803. gift of

  804. grace

  805. for society

  806. then we

  807. ought to

  808. see many

  809. Christians

  810. in positions

  811. of leadership.

  812. We need

  813. to be people

  814. who take

  815. the step

  816. that take

  817. the initiative

  818. and that

  819. we become

  820. conduits

  821. or channels

  822. of God's

  823. grace

  824. into our

  825. community.

  826. That might

  827. be starting

  828. a local

  829. action group

  830. who are

  831. seeking better

  832. resources

  833. for young

  834. people.

  835. It might

  836. be joining

  837. a board

  838. who are

  839. seeking better

  840. education

  841. facilities

  842. for our

  843. children.

  844. And these

  845. are the

  846. kinds of

  847. areas we

  848. ought to be

  849. immersed at

  850. within local

  851. levels and I

  852. know that some

  853. of you are

  854. and that's

  855. great to see

  856. and we

  857. ought to

  858. encourage it

  859. more and

  860. more.

  861. But let me

  862. suggest two

  863. areas that

  864. are of

  865. particular need

  866. within our

  867. wider community

  868. that perhaps

  869. we can have

  870. an input

  871. or something

  872. that we should

  873. certainly be

  874. raising and

  875. thinking and

  876. wanting to

  877. implement.

  878. Here's the

  879. first.

  880. Protect the

  881. vulnerable.

  882. One of the

  883. most vulnerable

  884. groups in our

  885. society today

  886. are immigrants,

  887. people who've

  888. moved to

  889. this country

  890. for all

  891. kinds of

  892. reasons.

  893. And the

  894. survey that

  895. I looked

  896. online at

  897. has just

  898. been published

  899. this week

  900. reported

  901. and it

  902. showed that

  903. unemployment

  904. among

  905. immigrants

  906. rose by

  907. 40%

  908. in the

  909. last three

  910. years

  911. compared to

  912. only 10%

  913. among Irish

  914. nationals.

  915. Now I know

  916. that's still a

  917. big figure but

  918. just there's

  919. 40%

  920. unemployment

  921. has risen

  922. with immigrants

  923. and 10%

  924. among Irish

  925. nationals.

  926. And the

  927. knock-on

  928. effects upon

  929. people is

  930. what they

  931. term consistent

  932. poverty.

  933. Consistent

  934. poverty means

  935. a low income

  936. which lacks

  937. basic needs

  938. such as

  939. adequate clothing,

  940. warmth and

  941. food.

  942. And they're

  943. saying now that

  944. there are

  945. many people

  946. because of

  947. unemployment

  948. that they

  949. do not

  950. have access

  951. to this.

  952. They're put

  953. into a

  954. bracket of

  955. consistent

  956. poverty.

  957. What do

  958. we do?

  959. What's our

  960. role within

  961. this?

  962. Well maybe

  963. it's people

  964. having to

  965. stand up and

  966. take initiative

  967. to find out

  968. where these

  969. people live

  970. and start an

  971. action or

  972. support group

  973. to do

  974. something about

  975. it.

  976. maybe it's

  977. already joining

  978. an existing

  979. group as

  980. a Christian

  981. and using

  982. your God

  983. given Christian

  984. principles and

  985. applying them

  986. and seeing

  987. them worked

  988. out for the

  989. common good

  990. of people.

  991. Joining and

  992. getting alongside

  993. the weak and

  994. the helpless

  995. assisting them

  996. and pleading

  997. their case.

  998. I talked to

  999. a lady

  1000. recently in

  1001. another church

  1002. who has been

  1003. helping somebody

  1004. in that

  1005. situation.

  1006. Who has been

  1007. going with

  1008. them to

  1009. the local

  1010. court to

  1011. plead their

  1012. case, to

  1013. work with

  1014. them, to

  1015. stand with

  1016. them to

  1017. try and

  1018. improve their

  1019. situation because

  1020. simply they

  1021. hadn't the

  1022. resources to

  1023. do it on

  1024. their own.

  1025. It requires

  1026. leaders who

  1027. will do

  1028. that even

  1029. just on a

  1030. friendship level.

  1031. I give you

  1032. one example

  1033. from history.

  1034. I'm sure

  1035. you've all

  1036. heard of

  1037. John Wesley.

  1038. a very

  1039. famous

  1040. preacher

  1041. connected

  1042. with the

  1043. Methodists.

  1044. I actually

  1045. think he

  1046. preached in

  1047. Kinsale on

  1048. one occasion.

  1049. He's well

  1050. known as

  1051. an evangelist.

  1052. But he

  1053. wasn't just

  1054. an evangelist.

  1055. He was

  1056. somebody who

  1057. took local

  1058. action,

  1059. locally and

  1060. nationally,

  1061. to change

  1062. much of

  1063. what was

  1064. going on.

  1065. And I

  1066. read here

  1067. how Britain

  1068. was at

  1069. that time.

  1070. This is a

  1071. quote.

  1072. It was

  1073. characterised

  1074. by wanton

  1075. torture of

  1076. animals for

  1077. sport,

  1078. the bestial

  1079. drunkenness

  1080. of the

  1081. populace,

  1082. the inhuman

  1083. traffic in

  1084. African

  1085. Negroes,

  1086. the kidnapping

  1087. of fellow

  1088. countrymen for

  1089. exportation and

  1090. sale as

  1091. slaves,

  1092. the mortality

  1093. of parish

  1094. children,

  1095. the universal

  1096. gambling

  1097. obsession,

  1098. the savagery

  1099. of the

  1100. prison system

  1101. and penal

  1102. code,

  1103. the political

  1104. bribery and

  1105. corruption,

  1106. nothing's

  1107. changed,

  1108. the ecclesiastical

  1109. arrogance,

  1110. the shallow

  1111. pretensions,

  1112. and it goes

  1113. on and on

  1114. and on.

  1115. And it says

  1116. it was really,

  1117. really bad.

  1118. Life was bad

  1119. for people.

  1120. But people

  1121. like John

  1122. Wesley did

  1123. something about

  1124. it.

  1125. And this

  1126. is what he

  1127. did,

  1128. amongst others,

  1129. and we'll

  1130. come back

  1131. to one of

  1132. these in a

  1133. minute.

  1134. He saw

  1135. the slave

  1136. trade being

  1137. abolished,

  1138. the prison

  1139. system was

  1140. humanised,

  1141. conditions in

  1142. factory and

  1143. mine were

  1144. improved,

  1145. there was

  1146. no longer

  1147. child labour,

  1148. and education

  1149. became available

  1150. to the poor

  1151. for the first

  1152. time.

  1153. Here was a

  1154. Christian man

  1155. campaigning

  1156. and driven

  1157. by his

  1158. Christian

  1159. convictions,

  1160. making a

  1161. change locally

  1162. and nationally.

  1163. If he

  1164. could do it,

  1165. then I'm

  1166. sure people

  1167. like us

  1168. could do

  1169. the same,

  1170. just on a

  1171. very basic

  1172. level.

  1173. So protect

  1174. the vulnerable

  1175. is one way

  1176. we begin to

  1177. lead within

  1178. our community.

  1179. The second

  1180. is this,

  1181. confront the

  1182. unjust.

  1183. It's a

  1184. known fact

  1185. that the

  1186. poorest in

  1187. our community

  1188. are the

  1189. most exploited

  1190. and because

  1191. people are

  1192. desperate for

  1193. money,

  1194. we know

  1195. what happens.

  1196. People work

  1197. for below

  1198. the minimum

  1199. wage and

  1200. without basic

  1201. employment rights,

  1202. so if the

  1203. employer wants

  1204. to get rid

  1205. of them,

  1206. they just

  1207. dismiss them

  1208. and they've

  1209. got nothing

  1210. to show

  1211. for it.

  1212. And what's

  1213. happening is

  1214. that many

  1215. parents are

  1216. having to

  1217. go and

  1218. work longer,

  1219. they're having

  1220. to take two

  1221. or three

  1222. jobs,

  1223. and their

  1224. little children

  1225. are just

  1226. having to

  1227. stay at

  1228. home and

  1229. fend for

  1230. themselves.

  1231. Maybe an

  1232. older brother

  1233. or sister

  1234. is to look

  1235. after them

  1236. and they

  1237. might only

  1238. be ten.

  1239. And this

  1240. is what's

  1241. happening

  1242. within our

  1243. own

  1244. neighbourhoods.

  1245. Again,

  1246. what are we

  1247. to do in

  1248. this situation?

  1249. Well,

  1250. I think it

  1251. can mean

  1252. raising the

  1253. issue with

  1254. our local

  1255. politicians,

  1256. campaigning

  1257. for tougher

  1258. penalties,

  1259. seeking that

  1260. employers who

  1261. are abusing

  1262. the weak

  1263. and the

  1264. vulnerable

  1265. are brought

  1266. to justice.

  1267. And we

  1268. should stand

  1269. with those

  1270. who are in

  1271. those difficult

  1272. situations.

  1273. It takes

  1274. leaders to

  1275. do it.

  1276. Another

  1277. example of

  1278. this, and

  1279. again it's

  1280. in the past

  1281. and maybe

  1282. this is

  1283. something we

  1284. need to

  1285. see happen

  1286. again, but

  1287. William

  1288. Wilberforce.

  1289. You might

  1290. remember him

  1291. from the

  1292. film Amazing

  1293. Grace.

  1294. He was a

  1295. politician in

  1296. the 1780s

  1297. in Britain,

  1298. a member

  1299. of parliament.

  1300. he fought

  1301. against many

  1302. different things

  1303. and as one

  1304. person for

  1305. 26 years,

  1306. along with

  1307. the encouragement

  1308. of the likes

  1309. of John

  1310. Wesley,

  1311. brought about

  1312. the abolition

  1313. of the slave

  1314. trade in

  1315. Britain.

  1316. And that

  1317. led to the

  1318. abolition of

  1319. the slave

  1320. trade throughout

  1321. much of the

  1322. British Empire

  1323. and at that

  1324. stage they

  1325. owned half

  1326. the world.

  1327. He was also

  1328. responsible for

  1329. freeing Sierra

  1330. Leone and

  1331. making that

  1332. a free colony.

  1333. Wilberforce

  1334. was a man

  1335. of God

  1336. who loved

  1337. God, who

  1338. read the

  1339. Bible, who

  1340. was a

  1341. Christian, but

  1342. yet he was

  1343. driven by his

  1344. Christian principles

  1345. to see God's

  1346. grace being

  1347. channelled and

  1348. worked out in

  1349. society.

  1350. So if he

  1351. could make

  1352. that huge

  1353. big change,

  1354. then I'm

  1355. sure we

  1356. can make

  1357. little changes

  1358. within our

  1359. own community.

  1360. So why

  1361. should we

  1362. do all of

  1363. this?

  1364. Why should

  1365. there be a

  1366. call for

  1367. Christian

  1368. leadership

  1369. locally and

  1370. nationally?

  1371. Well it's

  1372. this reason,

  1373. that it

  1374. makes God's

  1375. grace visible

  1376. and tangible.

  1377. Look back

  1378. at Romans

    Romans 12 chapter mention

  1379. chapter 12

  1380. a minute.

  1381. Romans

    Romans 12 chapter mention

  1382. chapter 12

  1383. is a

  1384. turning point

  1385. in the book

  1386. of Romans.

    Romans 1 chapter mention

  1387. Chapters

  1388. 1 to 11

  1389. is a

  1390. great big

  1391. telling of

  1392. God's

  1393. amazing grace,

  1394. his mercy,

  1395. his goodness

  1396. of how

  1397. Christ gave

  1398. his life

  1399. for us.

  1400. And then we

  1401. get this

  1402. turning point

  1403. at the beginning

  1404. of chapter 12

  1405. and then he

  1406. says,

  1407. chapter 12

  1408. verse 1,

  1409. therefore I

  1410. urge you

  1411. brothers and

  1412. sisters in

  1413. view of

  1414. God's mercy

  1415. because you

  1416. have received

  1417. so much

  1418. grace from

  1419. God.

  1420. because you

  1421. have had

  1422. so much

  1423. from what

  1424. Jesus has

  1425. done.

  1426. Offer your

  1427. bodies as

  1428. living sacrifices,

  1429. holy and

  1430. pleasing to

  1431. God.

  1432. This is your

  1433. spiritual act

  1434. of worship.

  1435. And chapter

  1436. 12 then goes

  1437. on and chapter

  1438. 13 goes to

  1439. explain some

  1440. of the ways

  1441. in which we

  1442. can begin to

  1443. live out that

  1444. grace to

  1445. others.

  1446. And one of

  1447. it is being

  1448. leaders within

  1449. our community

  1450. that we've just

  1451. been looking

  1452. at.

  1453. In response

  1454. to God's

  1455. grace, the

  1456. gospel that

  1457. has taken

  1458. effect in

  1459. our lives,

  1460. there's a

  1461. call for

  1462. leadership to

  1463. bring God's

  1464. grace to

  1465. our society.

  1466. You see, the

  1467. gospel is not

  1468. just to be

  1469. heard.

  1470. The gospel is

  1471. to be seen

  1472. in action.

  1473. If our

  1474. community is

  1475. going to come

  1476. to Christ,

  1477. then Christ

  1478. must become

  1479. visible to

  1480. them.

  1481. men.

  1482. And this

  1483. is not to

  1484. promote deed

  1485. over word

  1486. or social

  1487. action over

  1488. evangelism.

  1489. There is an

  1490. order and a

  1491. priority.

  1492. Simply saying

  1493. here that the

  1494. most needy in

  1495. our community,

  1496. they need to

  1497. hear the gospel

  1498. of Christ.

  1499. They need

  1500. God's grace.

  1501. But they've

  1502. also got to

  1503. see God's

  1504. grace in

  1505. action.

  1506. Now, I

  1507. don't know if

  1508. there will be

  1509. many here who

  1510. will make it

  1511. into politics,

  1512. whether we'll

  1513. see your face

  1514. on the ballot

  1515. sheet one day.

  1516. Maybe we will.

  1517. I hope we do.

  1518. But we are

  1519. people who

  1520. are to be

  1521. leaders in

  1522. our community.

  1523. Leaders who

  1524. seek to

  1525. bring God's

  1526. grace into

  1527. action, to

  1528. do us good,

  1529. to do us

  1530. right.

  1531. so that the

  1532. gospel and

  1533. his kingdom

  1534. continues to

  1535. grow and be

  1536. established.

  1537. So I

  1538. encourage us

  1539. to not just

  1540. leave it here

  1541. as we close,

  1542. but to take

  1543. what we've been

  1544. looking at and

  1545. explore it.

  1546. Maybe there's

  1547. questions.

  1548. Maybe we just

  1549. need to rethink

  1550. our whole idea

  1551. of what leadership

  1552. is.

  1553. But are there

  1554. ways we can

  1555. begin to be

  1556. leaders in our

  1557. community?

  1558. Let's pray.

  1559. Father, we

  1560. thank you for

  1561. every person

  1562. here, for

  1563. every job that

  1564. they are in,

  1565. for every

  1566. position of

  1567. influence that

  1568. they find

  1569. themselves in,

  1570. for those who

  1571. are on boards

  1572. of schools or

  1573. on various

  1574. committees.

  1575. We thank you

  1576. for each

  1577. person for

  1578. where they

  1579. are seeking

  1580. to be leaders

  1581. in their

  1582. community.

  1583. And we

  1584. pray that you

  1585. would fill

  1586. each one with

  1587. your Holy

  1588. Spirit, to

  1589. be courageous,

  1590. to be

  1591. strong, to

  1592. stand for

  1593. what is

  1594. right, to

  1595. stand for

  1596. justice and

  1597. seek to

  1598. correct that

  1599. which is

  1600. unjust.

  1601. I pray that

  1602. for each

  1603. person here

  1604. that we

  1605. would all

  1606. be conduits

  1607. and channels

  1608. of God's

  1609. grace to

  1610. our communities

  1611. and to our

  1612. neighbourhood.

  1613. May you

  1614. use each

  1615. one of us

  1616. just in

  1617. small ways

  1618. and may

  1619. you even

  1620. be pleased

  1621. to raise

  1622. up

  1623. Christians

  1624. who will

  1625. become

  1626. TDs

  1627. and local

  1628. counsellors,

  1629. who can

  1630. stand for

  1631. truth,

  1632. who can

  1633. stand for

  1634. what is

  1635. right,

  1636. so that

  1637. our country

  1638. and our

  1639. society

  1640. continues to

  1641. be good,

  1642. where people

  1643. are treated

  1644. equally and

  1645. fairly.

  1646. And above

  1647. all,

  1648. where your

  1649. gospel is

  1650. able to be

  1651. continually

  1652. proclaimed

  1653. freely,

  1654. where we

  1655. can continue

  1656. to meet

  1657. as we do

  1658. today and

  1659. live out

  1660. our faith.

  1661. We thank

  1662. you for

  1663. our country,

  1664. we thank

  1665. you for the

  1666. leaders that

  1667. we have,

  1668. we pray

  1669. for wisdom

  1670. for them

  1671. and we

  1672. pray for

  1673. their continued

  1674. change of

  1675. heart,

  1676. that they

  1677. would lead

  1678. according to

  1679. God's

  1680. design and

  1681. not their

  1682. own.

  1683. We pray

  1684. this in

  1685. Jesus'

  1686. name,

  1687. Amen.

  1688. Amen.
