  1. If anybody would like a pen to take notes, if you've got paper with you, thanks Yelena.

  2. Yelena has some pens there, so they'll be passed round.

  3. So we're reading from 1 Thessalonians chapter 2, it's on page 1187, as we continue on our

    1 Thessalonians 2 chapter mention

  4. series through this book.

  5. And I'll read it and then invite Alex up and I'll pray for him and we can hear God's

  6. words.

  7. So let's read together then.

  8. 1 Thessalonians chapter 2, starting at verse 17, on page 1187.

    1 Thessalonians 2 chapter mention

  9. Let's hear God's word to us.

  10. But brothers and sisters, when we were torn away from you for a short time, in person,

  11. not in thought, out of our intense longing, we made every effort to see you.

  12. For we wanted to come to you.

  13. Certainly I, Paul, did again and again, but Satan stopped us.

  14. For what is our hope, our joy, or the crown in which we will glory in the presence of our

  15. Lord Jesus Christ when he comes?

  16. Is it not you?

  17. Indeed, you are our glory and joy.

  18. So when we could stand it no longer, we thought it best to be left by ourselves in Athens.

  19. We sent Timothy, who is our brother and God's fellow worker, in spreading the gospel of Christ

  20. to strengthen and encourage you in your faith so that no one would be unsettled by these trials.

  21. You know quite well that we were destined for them.

  22. In fact, when we were with you, we kept telling you that we would be persecuted.

  23. And it turned out that way, as you well know.

  24. For this reason, when I could stand it no longer, I sent to find out about your faith.

  25. I was afraid that in some way the tempter might have tempted you and our efforts might have been useless.

  26. Alex, I don't think you need an introduction, so I'm just going to pray for you.

  27. Let's pray.

  28. Our Father God, we thank you again for the opportunity to hear your word.

  29. Thank you for those who you have gifted and enabled to speak it.

  30. We pray for Alex now that he might know the strengthening of your Holy Spirit.

  31. We pray that you would help him to communicate clearly and that he would be resting in you.

  32. And we pray for ourselves that we would be hearing what you are saying,

  33. being changed, being transformed, and ultimately being encouraged and strengthened.

  34. We pray this in Jesus' name for his glory.

  35. Amen.

  36. Thanks, Johnny.

  37. Well, it's still good morning, so good morning, everyone.

  38. Thank you.

  39. Thank you.

  40. Thank you.

  41. and Dad. Well, my first term in college, this says dear Mum and Dad, well my first term

  42. of college has gone fairly well. Life up here in the city is a bit different from home,

  43. but I'm adjusting well and settling in now. The course itself is so different from the

  44. Leaving Cert, but at least it's what I want to be studying, I think. Although I do hope

  45. it'll get a bit more practical next year. There's a good hockey club up here, and I

  46. have made one of the teams, and so I'm making friends through that and getting exercise

  47. other than the five-mile cycle commute every day. We won our first few league matches earlier

  48. in the season, but we've started to drag our heels a bit now. I think the social aspect

  49. is affecting some of the performances. Well, that's the news for now. I hope you're

  50. all well at home and the cat hasn't eaten the dog yet. I'll be back for Christmas in

  51. a couple of weeks after these exams. Much love, your son.

  52. That's a standard letter home from college. A child touching base with his parents after

  53. leaving the big bad world of third-level education, where we learn more than just our course material.

  54. There's nothing standoutish about this letter. The boy is alive. He's adjusting to the faster pace

  55. of life. Study is okay. He's socializing a bit. Although we're not 100% sure how involved he is in the

  56. socializing that is affecting the hockey team's performances. And he's getting exercise. So as parents,

  57. are we glad to get this letter? Or email? Yes, we are. But there's still so much that's unknown.

  58. We don't know if he's eating properly, sleeping properly, making all his lectures, managing his

  59. finances properly. And if we are Christians today, if we are followers of the Lord Jesus,

  60. then we would also like to hear that he is doing well in his faith. That he has found a good Bible

  61. teaching church to go to. That he has met other believers on campus, and he is praying for

  62. opportunities to share his faith with his classmates, housemates, and teammates. We would want to know that

  63. when faced with the busyness of life in the city, the distractions and temptations of university life,

  64. and the freedom of living away from his parents, that he would still love the Lord. Pursue him,

  65. and grow in the faith, in his faith in the Lord Jesus. There is a PS, but that'll come at the end

  66. of the letter, as all good letters do. So today our passage is 1 Thessalonians chapter 2 verses 17

    1 Thessalonians 2:17

  67. through to chapter 3 verse 5. If you want to keep your finger in that, we'll be referring to it a lot.

  68. And Paul here is writing to his dear friends, who he loves.

  69. He is pained to be separated from them. We know this because he talks about it, being torn from them,

  70. and his intense longing to see them there in 17 and 18.

  71. This pain, however, is not so much for their welfare, and him wanting their company. No.

  72. He wants, verse 2 of chapter 3, he wants to strengthen and encourage them in their faith.

  73. And that's what we're going to be spending this morning looking at. Strengthening and encouraging

  74. them in their faith. This is Paul's desire for the church in Thessalonica, and I believe that that is

  75. his desire for this church in Cargilline too. That we would be strengthened and encouraged in the faith.

  76. Why? Well, he goes on to explain. So that no one would be unsettled by these trials.

  77. And later on we'll be looking a little bit more at those trials.

  78. But imagine back to the letter for a second. If there had been no letter home by the student

  79. having just left for the big city. There was no homing pigeon sent with news. There was no herald

  80. ordered to announce his news of survival. A parent would be concerned to hear from him

  81. and how he was getting on. And back in the time of Paul's writing it was no different.

  82. Paul had had to leave Thessalonica unwillingly, and so now at the time of writing he hasn't heard

  83. from them and is concerned. Such is his concern that he is prepared to send Timothy to find out

  84. how they are and to strengthen and encourage them in their faith.

  85. He commends Timothy in his introduction as our brother and God's fellow worker in spreading

  86. the gospel of Christ. Timothy was only a young fellow at the time, so he may not have been

  87. taken seriously when he arrived there on his own. So perhaps this was Paul's way of breaking down

  88. any barriers there might have been so that the believers there would accept Timothy. But what a

  89. commendation he sends Timothy off with. God's fellow worker. Timothy is working with God to spread the

  90. gospel of Christ, which means both initial evangelism and also the nurture of the church.

  91. So we're going to look at those two things now. Evangelism. It's the introducing people to the

  92. person of Christ, telling them why he came, died and rose again from the dead. And the reason Timothy

  93. is sent to continue the work started by Paul of introducing people to Christ. Carraghlein,

  94. our estate, Heronswood, Cork, the workplace, the world. We all need to hear this good news too,

  95. that Jesus Christ entered the world to offer us forgiveness from our rebellion against God and to

  96. offer us hope for today and for the forever future. We all need to hear this every day. Let's remind

  97. ourselves, each other, our families about this every day. We need to hear that good news daily.

  98. And Timothy was also sent to nurture. The Oxford English Dictionary describes nurture as

  99. to care for and protect someone or something while they are growing. And this is also why Timothy was sent,

  100. to help grow in knowledge and love of Christ. These young Christians in Thessalonica were in danger of

  101. the tempter. We hear about the tempter there in verse 5.

  102. So these young Christians in Thessalonica were in danger of the tempter leading them astray.

  103. They were also young in their faith, so they needed to be cared for and protected.

  104. As a parent will anticipate the dangers that threaten their child, so too Paul anticipates the

  105. dangers lying ahead for his children in Thessalonica and sends Timothy to protect them.

  106. How does he do this? With the gospel. By encouraging them in their faith, he is discipling them,

  107. speaking the truth into their lives so that the tempter wouldn't deceive them with false promises

  108. of an easy life. This is absolutely key to this letter because Paul is getting to the very heart of

  109. the church. He doesn't say, oh, I heard you need a new praise time leader, or the rota has a few gaps in it,

  110. or you need help with the kids and the youth program. So I'm sending Timothy to help out a bit. Slot him in

  111. wherever you think is helpful. No, he is sending Timothy whose key purpose in life is all about spreading the

  112. gospel of Christ. To strengthen and encourage them and us in their faith. That's where Paul's priorities

  113. are for this church in Thessalonica, and I believe here in Cargilline too. Their faith and making it work

  114. out practically and encouraging them in it. Why is Paul so concerned about their faith? Have they not

  115. already heard the gospel of Christ? Been told of their need of a savior? Been encouraged to live a

  116. repentant life? Yes, they have. But faith is not a one-off. It's not a decision you make once and then

  117. carry on your life unaffected, but safely knowing that you will go to heaven when you die. He tells us

  118. in verse 3 of chapter 3, so that no one would be unsettled by these trials.

  119. We heard last week from Tom when he was speaking about these trials that they faced. And we know

  120. too from our own life's experiences that trials do come. To both believers and those who don't believe,

  121. life is hard. So trials are not a surprise. And Paul continues in verse 4 by saying that he had told

  122. them to expect to suffer and even to suffer for their faith. I'm sure Paul had often thought it would be

  123. much easier not to follow Christ, to go along with the crowd and live an easy, stress-free life as a tent maker.

  124. Especially when he remembers back to his time before he met Jesus on the road to Damascus, which we learn

  125. about in Acts 9 when he used to viciously persecute Christians himself. That was a much better life.

  126. Life as a Christian is not easy. We always seem to be rowing against the tide or fighting an uphill battle.

  127. And that is why Paul is so concerned for these Christians in Thessalonica,

  128. because he knows how real the tempter is and how good he is at manipulating us into giving up

  129. or rebelling against God's rule.

  130. Paul loves these believers like a parent.

  131. And so nothing is more important to him than their following Christ.

  132. And he wants to do everything that he can to ensure that they are not blown off course

  133. by the tempter, by Satan.

  134. Satan has already thwarted Paul's own plans to go and visit them.

  135. Chapter 2, verse 18 says,

  136. For we wanted to come to you. Certainly I, Paul, did again and again.

  137. But Satan stopped us.

  138. So, here we have an illustration.

  139. Here we have two big bookends.

  140. Both being satanic opposition.

  141. They nearly look satanic if you look at them closely.

  142. But they are satanic opposition.

  143. In verse 18, Satan is preventing Paul from visiting the church.

  144. And in verses 3 and 4, Satan is trying to cast doubts in the minds of the Christians,

  145. to unsettle them.

  146. Satan's biggest weapon is to prevent the spreading of the gospel of Christ.

  147. So it shouldn't be a surprise to Paul or to us

  148. when trials or opposition or persecution comes.

  149. It stands to reason, therefore,

  150. that the best way to thwart Satan's plans

  151. is the spread of the gospel.

  152. And so...

  153. And so...

  154. In between these two bookends of opposition

  155. is the good news.

  156. The gospel.

  157. Brought by Timothy.

  158. Sent by Paul.

  159. To strengthen and encourage the Thessalonians

  160. in their faith.

  161. Here in Carragalline, or even in Ireland,

  162. as a church, we are very unlikely to face vicious persecution

  163. like our brothers and sisters in other parts of the world.

  164. However, Satan is still at work.

  165. Casting doubts in our mind about God's sovereignty.

  166. Causing us to think about giving up on faith.

  167. Or even just causing us to be so comfortable in our life

  168. that we start to think our lives are pretty good without God.

  169. And there's no need to change anything.

  170. Or let God disrupt our comfort.

  171. So how can you be a Timothy?

  172. How can I be a Timothy?

  173. If Satan is still at work,

  174. how can we strengthen and encourage each other?

  175. Well, how does Timothy do it to the Thessalonians?

  176. Verse 2.

  177. He shares the gospel of Christ.

  178. So, when we meet for coffee during the week,

  179. we should be speaking of the good news of the forgiveness of sins.

  180. The freedom that life in Christ gives us.

  181. When we meet up during the week for a one-to-one Bible study,

  182. and I encourage us all to do that if we can.

  183. Or when we meet at Polo,

  184. we should study the Bible.

  185. Letting it mould and shape us.

  186. We should be praying its truths into each other's lives.

  187. Challenging each other as to how we read it

  188. is affecting us in our lives.

  189. The more we hear of the gospel,

  190. the more we start to think it

  191. and let it affect how we think,

  192. how we make decisions,

  193. how we react to situations.

  194. We should be making these times a priority in our week

  195. so that we can strengthen and encourage each other

  196. in the faith

  197. and therefore be strengthened and encouraged ourselves.

  198. Maybe you feel more like a Thessalonian

  199. and you need encouragement.

  200. I think we all are.

  201. When we meet at Growth Group,

  202. there is a great opportunity

  203. to share with each other

  204. how we are really doing.

  205. Where we can be vulnerable with each other

  206. and say how we struggle

  207. and pray for each other through those struggles.

  208. When we chat over coffee,

  209. at half time during our Sunday morning service,

  210. do we really need to find out

  211. the score in the football match the night before?

  212. Or how long the kids slept for last night?

  213. Yes, it's important to share life with each other,

  214. even the small details.

  215. But when else is there an opportunity

  216. during the week to ask,

  217. how is your faith?

  218. How are you doing with God these days?

  219. Johnny's always encouraging us

  220. on a Sunday morning

  221. to make the most of that time in our service.

  222. And here we see the Bible saying the same thing.

  223. Paul's deepest desire

  224. was for the spiritual welfare of these believers.

  225. So much so that he sent his right-hand man, Timothy,

  226. with the express purpose

  227. to strengthen and encourage them.

  228. When I was thinking this through in my own life,

  229. I was really challenged and rebuked

  230. that I don't feel this way.

  231. I said goodbye to the Crusader kids back in May,

  232. and to be honest,

  233. I haven't given much thought

  234. to their faith since.

  235. I'm delighted to talk to many of you

  236. on a Sunday morning,

  237. but once Monday morning comes,

  238. I go into autopilot again,

  239. thinking about my work

  240. and my little life.

  241. Is my or our deepest desire

  242. for the faith of others?

  243. Do we love to hear

  244. how each other is really doing?

  245. Every time research

  246. seems to be carried out

  247. and people are asked

  248. towards the end of their lives,

  249. what do you regret most in life?

  250. Nobody ever says

  251. they wish they had spent more time working.

  252. Nearly everyone says

  253. they wish they had spent more time

  254. with their family.

  255. It seems to be that our kids

  256. and our relationships

  257. with people

  258. are the things that give us

  259. most pleasure and pride.

  260. And so it is here with Paul

  261. and the Thessalonians.

  262. What an endorsement he gives them.

  263. Verse 19.

  264. For what is our hope,

  265. our joy,

  266. or the crown

  267. in which we will glory

  268. in the presence of our Lord Jesus

  269. when he comes?

  270. Is it not you?

  271. Indeed you

  272. are our glory

  273. and our joy.

  274. You can see the pride

  275. that parents feel

  276. when their child

  277. takes their first step

  278. or says their first word.

  279. And that's how Paul feels

  280. about this church.

  281. He is so pleased

  282. to have met them,

  283. to have taught them,

  284. and seen them come to faith,

  285. to know

  286. and to love them.

  287. Paul can almost imagine himself

  288. before the Lord

  289. bringing the church with him

  290. as proof that he has been faithful

  291. in his calling as a missionary.

  292. His children or converts,

  293. those he introduced to Christ,

  294. were the source of his joy.

  295. Not because of anything

  296. Paul had done himself,

  297. but because of what Christ

  298. had done in the lives

  299. of these people.

  300. Paul pictures himself

  301. with the Thessalonians

  302. on the final day of judgment,

  303. being presented to the Lord Jesus,

  304. and he desperately wants them

  305. to grow

  306. and to be encouraged

  307. and comforted

  308. in their difficult walk

  309. with the Lord

  310. so that they will be with him

  311. on that day.

  312. Do we have

  313. that same desperation?

  314. Are we eager

  315. to see each other,

  316. the crusader kids

  317. that we know,

  318. our friends,

  319. our neighbours,

  320. being presented

  321. before Christ

  322. when he comes again,

  323. standing beside us?

  324. Do we love each other enough

  325. to call each other

  326. our crowning glory?

  327. As I was thinking

  328. through this

  329. during the week,

  330. I was struck

  331. by how often

  332. we talk about

  333. how being a Christian

  334. is all about

  335. a personal relationship

  336. with Jesus,

  337. or the lovely romantic notion

  338. that if I was stranded

  339. on a desert island,

  340. all I would need

  341. is the Bible

  342. and Jesus and I

  343. would be happy

  344. on our own forever.

  345. Well, to be honest,

  346. that sounds quite miserable

  347. to me.

  348. I'm not good

  349. in my own company.

  350. Chris left

  351. last week

  352. for a couple of days

  353. and it was a great opportunity

  354. to spend time

  355. preparing this,

  356. but to be honest,

  357. it was miserable.

  358. I'm not good

  359. in my own company.

  360. I need you.

  361. I need Christ

  362. working in my life

  363. through you,

  364. the church.

  365. I know I am weak

  366. and likely

  367. to be tempted

  368. by a seemingly

  369. easier life

  370. and without you,

  371. then I would fail

  372. and I suspect

  373. that I'm not alone

  374. in that feeling.

  375. It is through the church

  376. and the gospel

  377. that God works

  378. in my life,

  379. strengthening

  380. and encouraging me

  381. in my faith.

  382. I love that

  383. on a Thursday night

  384. I can go out

  385. and I can get

  386. a kicking in my shins

  387. from the same people

  388. who comfort

  389. and pray for me

  390. the night before

  391. in growth group.

  392. P.S.

  393. Mum and Dad,

  394. I can't believe

  395. I almost forgot.

  396. In Freshers Week

  397. I joined the hockey club,

  398. the skiing club,

  399. the friends of

  400. Star Wars Society,

  401. they call themselves

  402. the Jedi Sock,

  403. and the Christian Union.

  404. I am weakly

  405. hearing the Bible

  406. taught with passion.

  407. I am making friends

  408. with these people

  409. and I think these

  410. are going to be

  411. friendships for life.

  412. Some of them

  413. go to a church

  414. which is really close

  415. to where I'm living

  416. so we go there

  417. and hang out

  418. on a Sunday afternoon.

  419. No longer

  420. am I the little guy

  421. who had to quietly

  422. read his Bible

  423. in the toilets

  424. of boarding school.

  425. Here I have people

  426. to read it with

  427. and study it with

  428. out in the open.

  429. The Christian Union

  430. is helped by

  431. a society called

  432. IFES Ireland

  433. and they have

  434. a catchphrase

  435. people not projects.

  436. It puts our focus

  437. on each other,

  438. our relationship

  439. with Christ

  440. and takes the focus

  441. off projects.

  442. I think that's

  443. a good motto

  444. for the life

  445. of the church too

  446. because without

  447. people loving each other

  448. as Christ loves

  449. the church

  450. then no project

  451. we take on

  452. can succeed.

  453. So mum and dad

  454. life is good

  455. at the moment

  456. but I know

  457. that when it gets tough

  458. these same people

  459. will still be there

  460. encouraging me

  461. and reminding me

  462. of the risen Lord

  463. Jesus who loves me.

  464. That letter

  465. although written

  466. last week

  467. as I prepared this

  468. could have been

  469. written 14 years ago

  470. when I started

  471. college

  472. in Dublin.

  473. I was a baby

  474. Christian

  475. although I had been

  476. a believer

  477. for a few years

  478. at that stage

  479. and going to the

  480. big city

  481. I could have

  482. easily fallen

  483. into the traps

  484. and pitfalls

  485. of student life.

  486. Thankfully

  487. I got involved

  488. in the Christian

  489. Union

  490. I got involved

  491. in a small group

  492. with five lads

  493. and we met

  494. weekly to study

  495. the Bible.

  496. Four of us

  497. are still great friends

  498. and are still

  499. walking with the Lord

  500. and one sadly

  501. was caught

  502. by the tempter

  503. and is following

  504. the way of the world.

  505. But we met

  506. regularly

  507. and study

  508. the Bible

  509. and encourage

  510. each other

  511. in our faith.

  512. That continues

  513. today

  514. when we see

  515. each other

  516. but it has

  517. to be intentional.

  518. It's not natural

  519. to go up to someone

  520. and ask them

  521. how their faith is

  522. or how are you

  523. doing with God

  524. these days.

  525. It doesn't flow

  526. easily

  527. but it is

  528. so important

  529. that that is

  530. why Timothy

  531. was sent

  532. by Paul.

  533. As I finish

  534. it's helpful

  535. to recap first

  536. and then

  537. to look forward.

  538. As a church

  539. we need to be

  540. strengthening

  541. and encouraging

  542. each other

  543. in our faith

  544. at every opportunity.

  545. If we don't

  546. the tempter

  547. will deceive us

  548. and coax us

  549. away from

  550. the Lord Jesus.

  551. We strengthen

  552. and encourage

  553. each other

  554. with

  555. the gospel.

  556. Reminding ourselves

  557. that without Christ

  558. we are without

  559. hope

  560. and that with

  561. him

  562. we are

  563. promised life

  564. and fullness

  565. of life.

  566. So if you ask

  567. me

  568. how my faith

  569. is

  570. or how am I

  571. doing with God

  572. these days

  573. maybe you'll

  574. ask me later

  575. or maybe you'll

  576. ask the person

  577. sitting beside you

  578. or maybe you'll

  579. ask your spouse

  580. or your friend

  581. when you see them.

  582. But from this

  583. passage

  584. faith is described

  585. as an awareness

  586. of the pitfalls

  587. Satan puts

  588. in our way

  589. but the resolve

  590. to spread

  591. the gospel

  592. of Christ

  593. to ourselves

  594. to strengthen

  595. each other

  596. and encourage

  597. each other

  598. so that we

  599. would all

  600. be presented

  601. together

  602. before Christ

  603. when he

  604. comes again.

  605. That

  606. would be

  607. our crowning

  608. glory.

  609. That

  610. would be

  611. our legacy.

  612. Let's pray.

  613. Father God

  614. thank you

  615. that you

  616. loved us

  617. enough

  618. to send

  619. Jesus

  620. to comfort

  621. us

  622. and to

  623. strengthen

  624. us.

  625. Thanks too

  626. for each

  627. other

  628. for this

  629. church

  630. for the

  631. love and

  632. concern

  633. that there

  634. is in

  635. this

  636. church

  637. for each

  638. other.

  639. Please help

  640. us to do

  641. this more

  642. to be

  643. intentional

  644. in our

  645. conversations

  646. encouraging

  647. each other

  648. and strengthening

  649. each other

  650. in our

  651. faith.

  652. Please help

  653. us to be

  654. always pointing

  655. each other

  656. towards the

  657. gospel that

  658. saves us.

  659. Thank you

  660. for your

  661. spirit that

  662. is with us

  663. to help us

  664. do these

  665. things which

  666. can sometimes

  667. feel alien.

  668. And please

  669. help us

  670. to as we

  671. leave here

  672. today to

  673. have a

  674. desire to

  675. stand with

  676. each other

  677. on that

  678. final day

  679. presenting

  680. each other

  681. to you

  682. as your

  683. children.

  684. In

  685. Jesus name.

  686. Amen.

  687. Amen.

  688. Thank you.
