  1. through to verse 13.

  2. 1 Thessalonians chapter 3, starting at verse 6, it's on page 1187.

    1 Thessalonians 3 chapter mention

  3. Let's hear God's word.

  4. But Timothy has just now come to us from you and has brought good news about your faith and love.

  5. He has told us that you always have pleasant memories of us and that you long to see us just as we also long to see you.

  6. Therefore, brothers and sisters, in all our distress and persecution, we were encouraged about you because of your faith.

  7. For now we really live, since you are standing firm in the Lord.

  8. How can we thank God enough for you in return for all the joy we have in the presence of our God because of you?

  9. Night and day we pray most earnestly that we may see you again and supply what is lacking in your faith.

  10. Now may God and Father himself and our Lord Jesus clear the way for us to come to you.

  11. May the Lord make your love increase and overflow for each other and for everyone else, just as ours does for you.

  12. May he strengthen your hearts so that you will be blameless and holy in the presence of our God and Father

  13. when our Lord Jesus comes with all his holy ones.

  14. Daniel.

  15. Daniel.

  16. Thank you.

  17. I'm going to pray for you.

  18. Let's pray for Daniel and for us.

  19. Father, again we thank you so much for people that you bring to us and people that you gift,

  20. enabling them to handle your word and to be able to speak it.

  21. And we thank you for Daniel and pray for him that you would empower him and fill him with your Holy Spirit.

  22. That he may be able to speak to us with clarity and passion the truth of your word.

  23. And that for us as we listen that we would be hearing your words and that they would change us and transform us.

  24. Changing us into the church that you would have us to be.

  25. And transforming us as people to be more like you.

  26. So we pray your blessing on us all.

  27. In Jesus name we pray.

  28. Amen.

  29. Amen.

  30. Thanks man.

  31. Amen.

  32. Amen.

  33. Amen.

  34. Amen.

  35. Amen.

  36. Amen.

  37. Amen.

  38. Amen.

  39. Amen.

  40. Amen.

  41. Amen.

  42. Amen.

  43. Amen.

  44. Amen.

  45. Amen.

  46. Helps if you have the right PowerPoint and such.

  47. Good morning.

  48. I want to say thanks very much for the privilege of coming this morning.

  49. Sorry, no.

  50. Do you want a little adjustments?

  51. I have knocked these things over in the past so I don't want to do it halfway through.

  52. I'm not going to start hitting it or anything.

  53. It's just to get the distractions out of the way now rather than in 10 minutes.

  54. Okay.

  55. Okay.

  56. So again, thanks for the invitation and the opportunity to come this morning.

  57. Just for those who are interested in these things, the three girls who are with us this morning,

  58. two of the girls are our daughters, Evie and Emily, the younger two.

  59. The taller girl is actually my niece.

  60. Many people think we have three daughters because they look so similar.

  61. My niece is Jasmine.

  62. And they love coming.

  63. They're actually getting quite into the summer months of going around visiting all the other churches.

  64. And we'll get a full report of when we go back what creche was actually like.

  65. So...

  66. I'm going to pray.

  67. I know Johnny's prayed.

  68. I always feel we can never pray enough.

  69. Father, I do thank you for this time this morning.

  70. It is a privilege to be involved in your service, Lord.

  71. You gave us the greatest example of service, Lord.

  72. For how you gave up heaven to come to us.

  73. How you walked with us.

  74. How you washed your disciples' feet.

  75. And how you went on the cross.

  76. And suffered and bled and died for our sins.

  77. And rose again and opened the way to heaven.

  78. Help us to do everything in our lives in the light of who you are.

  79. Guide us this morning, Father.

  80. Lord Jesus.

  81. Lord Holy Spirit.

  82. Show us the way.

  83. Amen.

  84. Well, I know that as a church you've been looking at the message of 1 Thessalonians for a number of weeks.

  85. So I have an introduction that if I see them I'm going quite quickly, I will start to really slow down.

  86. So it's a quick introduction to recap a little bit and try and see where we've got to.

  87. Now I know that Ralph gave you a reminder.

  88. A reminder to welcome the trustworthy message of the gospel of Jesus Christ.

  89. He laid out for us the picture of the church.

  90. The believers as a chosen people.

  91. And it's God who calls us.

  92. And it's not only God.

  93. It's not only that he calls us.

  94. But the call is based on his son leaving heaven to come into a broken world to rescue and deliver us from the coming wrath.

  95. And it's just like an echo of so many other verses in Romans 6.23.

  96. For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus.

  97. Or Colossians 1.13 and 14.

  98. For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son Helos, where we have redemption and forgiveness of sins.

  99. Because our position is based completely on the work of Christ.

  100. And Ralph reminded us that the message at the time was turning the world upside down.

  101. That the Christian gospel was turning the world upside down.

  102. And the question was, how do we live in light of that?

  103. And maybe it should be turning our personal world upside down.

  104. And turning the world around us upside down as well.

  105. And then Kevin came and he talked about our motives.

  106. And he reminded that our motives should be to live to please God.

  107. To examine ourselves carefully and make sure that our motives are kept in balance at all times.

  108. For the appeal we make does not spring from error or impure motives.

  109. Nor are we trying to trick you.

  110. On the contrary, we speak as those approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel.

  111. We are not trying to please people, but God who tests our heart.

  112. And that applies in life and in ministry and all our Christian living.

  113. That our motives are to please God.

  114. And then to remember that we are to labour.

  115. To work always with right motives.

  116. And then Tom came and he talked about great expectations.

  117. What a wonderful title.

  118. Great Expectations.

  119. And he reminded us that great expectations can be easily dashed.

  120. But that our expectations have to be based on the good news of the gospel.

  121. And we also thank God continually.

  122. Because when you received the word of God which you heard from us.

  123. You accepted it not as a human word, but as it actually is.

  124. The word of God which is indeed at work in you who believe.

  125. So we have to rely on God's work at work with the Holy Spirit.

  126. Because it's a living word.

  127. And even though they suffered and they knew trials, that's exactly what they did.

  128. They trusted God's word.

  129. And Tom challenged us to be different.

  130. And he challenged us to be prepared to suffer.

  131. And to be careful and cautious when we are in a difficult time.

  132. And in the struggle.

  133. And not to be so sure about trusting our feelings.

  134. Because our feelings can trick us.

  135. Not to switch off our feelings.

  136. Not to switch off our emotions.

  137. Our emotions are a beautiful gift from God.

  138. The full range of emotions that we've been given by God are a gift to us.

  139. How we enjoy life.

  140. How we share time with each other.

  141. How we enjoy his nature, his beauty.

  142. How we enjoy God himself.

  143. How we love God.

  144. They all come from our emotions.

  145. But not to always trust our emotions.

  146. Because in difficult times, they can trick us.

  147. And we can let circumstances overcome us.

  148. So we have to trust God in all circumstances for the outcome.

  149. And then last week, Alex was giving a message.

  150. Reminding us.

  151. And you notice I keep saying us.

  152. Even though I wasn't here.

  153. Because as you might have figured out, I've listened to those messages.

  154. Reminding us.

  155. And at that point, I'll remind you that those messages are still on the website.

  156. And there are good messages on the website.

  157. So if you did miss them, go back and listen to them.

  158. It will encourage you.

  159. So Alex reminded us that to be strengthened and encouraged in the faith.

  160. Especially in those times of trial.

  161. But in many ways, that every day is a time of trial.

  162. As the tempter, as Satan or enemy, seeks to lead us astray.

  163. We will face trials.

  164. Alex reminded us that we need to encourage and remind each other of the truth.

  165. That we may be strengthened.

  166. And that our focus, just like Paul and Timothy in silence, would never be removed from the spread of the gospel.

  167. The good news of Jesus Christ.

  168. He encouraged us, every one of us, to live together in full Christian fellowship.

  169. Bringing the guiding truth of the living word and the power of God's living word.

  170. The gospel.

  171. Into our lives.

  172. And when I was listening to those messages and preparing, it reminded me of something that I came across a while ago in a daily devotional from Spurgeon.

  173. And he said,

  174. The love which the early Christians felt towards the Lord was not a quiet emotion which they hid within themselves in the secret chambers of their souls.

  175. And which they only spoke of when they met on the first day of the week.

  176. And sang hymns in honor of Christ Jesus the crucified.

  177. But it was a passion with them of such vehement and all-consuming energy that it was visible in their actions, spoke in their commonest talk, and looked out of their eyes even in their commonest glances.

  178. Love to Jesus was a flame which fed upon the core and heart of their being, and therefore, from its own force, burned its way into the outer man and shone there.

  179. So that's a quick recap that's brought us to where we are today.

  180. And I hope I've been faithful to what the other guys were trying to bring you.

  181. And I believe that I have.

  182. And today we're at 1 Thessalonians chapter 3 and verses 6 down to 13.

    1 Thessalonians 3 chapter mention

  183. So we're going to read them again.

  184. But Timothy has just now come to us from you.

  185. And has brought good news about your faith and love.

  186. He has told us that you always have pleasant memories of us and that you long to see us, just as we also long to see you.

  187. Therefore, brothers, in all our distress and persecution, we were encouraged about you because of your faith.

  188. For now we really live, since you are standing firm in the Lord.

  189. How can we thank God enough for you in return for all the joy we have in the presence of our God because of you?

  190. Night and day we pray most earnestly that we may see you again and supply what is lacking in your faith.

  191. Now may our God and Father himself and our Lord Jesus clear the way for us to come to you.

  192. May the Lord make your love increase and overflow for each other and for everyone else, just as ours does for you.

  193. May he strengthen your hearts so that you will be blameless and holy in the presence of our God and Father when our Lord Jesus comes with all his holy ones.

  194. So let's take a look at these verses before we begin to apply them to ourselves.

  195. But Timothy has just now come to us from you and brought us good news about your faith and sight.

  196. Paul is happy.

  197. Put simply, he's happy with the report that has come back.

  198. Because he's concerned.

  199. He was concerned that they might have been led astray.

  200. And Paul, as a Jew, probably had good reason to fear.

  201. Because he knew the history of his own people.

  202. They had been repeatedly called by God and repeatedly turned and gone their own way.

  203. Whether it was in the desert after coming up out of Egypt.

  204. Or whether it was their refusal to take the land when they were told to take the land.

  205. Or in the time of the whole period of the judges.

  206. When they repeatedly rejected their God and turned to idols.

  207. Paul knew the history of his own people.

  208. And he knew how the devil, how Satan, the tempter, can get in and destroy the work.

  209. So he had good reason and good experience to know.

  210. But he got a good report.

  211. And he was happy to hear about their faith and love.

  212. And he got a good account as well of their attitude towards themselves.

  213. Their attitude towards Paul and Timothy and Silas.

  214. They had pleasant memories.

  215. And they were anxious to see them.

  216. It's a good report.

  217. I'm repeating that, aren't I?

  218. There's a reason.

  219. It's a good report.

  220. And he says to them,

  221. Therefore, brothers, in all our distress and persecution,

  222. we were encouraged about you because of your faith.

  223. Well, the outcome for him, for them, for Paul, for Timothy and Silas,

  224. was that in their struggles,

  225. the steadfast faith of the Thessalonians had encouraged them,

  226. had buoyed them up,

  227. had bolstered them in their position,

  228. and his joy outflows from that into verse 8.

  229. For now we really live.

  230. We really live since you are standing firm on the Lord.

  231. And how can we thank God enough for you

  232. in return for all the joy we have in the presence of our God because of you?

  233. Paul is so grateful, so thankful,

  234. even though they've had huge difficulty.

  235. And Paul's taken the time to remind them

  236. that they've been in difficulty themselves.

  237. He doesn't focus on it.

  238. He doesn't make it the main factor of his communication.

  239. He is happy to leave it behind

  240. and focus on the joy that they all have together

  241. in the presence of God,

  242. in their heavenly reward,

  243. because of their steadfast holding to the faith.

  244. Night and day we pray most earnestly

  245. that we may see you again

  246. and supply what is lacking in your faith.

  247. You're ceaseless, never-ending, never-stopping prayer.

  248. Even though Paul and Silas and Timothy

  249. have been involved in fostering their growth

  250. and have brought the word to them

  251. and have prayed with them and care for them,

  252. he's saying to them,

  253. we still haven't stopped.

  254. We continue night and day to pray

  255. that we may spend time with you again

  256. and help you where you are,

  257. help you where you are struggling,

  258. with you to help you make up the things

  259. that are missing in your life of faith.

  260. And come into verse 11,

  261. where he says,

  262. Now may our God and Father himself

  263. and our Lord Jesus clear the way

  264. for us to come to you.

  265. Paul's reliance on God.

  266. Even though it is his desire to get there,

  267. to be there to help them,

  268. he's clearly saying that he cannot do it,

  269. they cannot do it,

  270. unless God clears the way.

  271. He's committing the journey to the Lord.

  272. Don't start the journey

  273. unless you commit it to the Lord.

  274. I don't know Peter and I don't know Maeve,

  275. but they are starting their journey.

  276. That struck me this morning.

  277. They came up here and with you,

  278. they are committing their journey to the Lord.

  279. And in verse 12,

  280. and you know,

  281. I keep thinking when I come to verses like these,

  282. we are told in so many places,

  283. in so many ways,

  284. how can you understand the Bible?

  285. You know,

  286. the Bible is so hard to understand.

  287. And this verse,

  288. verse 12,

  289. is one of those very, very tricky,

  290. complicated,

  291. oh,

  292. very, very difficult verses to understand.

  293. May the Lord make your love increase

  294. and overflow for each other

  295. and for everyone else,

  296. just as our does few.

  297. Hands up if you don't understand that verse.

  298. It's not that complicated really,

  299. is it?

  300. But it's a prayer.

  301. It's not a castaway statement.

  302. May the Lord,

  303. again,

  304. that reliance on the Lord,

  305. Paul is saying to them,

  306. reminding them that your reliance is on the Lord,

  307. which will make your love increase and overflow.

  308. Just as his does,

  309. as Timothy does,

  310. as Silas does.

  311. And verse 13,

  312. may he strengthen your hearts

  313. so that you will be blameless and holy

  314. in the presence of God,

  315. our Father,

  316. when our Lord Jesus comes with all his holy ones.

  317. And he's saying to them there,

  318. and if you look at the beginning of the sentence,

  319. may he,

  320. because of the way we speak English,

  321. may he has a little bit of a,

  322. oh,

  323. he could like,

  324. you know,

  325. he could,

  326. it's possible,

  327. but it's more definite than that.

  328. That sentence is more definite than that.

  329. It could easily be translated,

  330. so as,

  331. to establish.

  332. If you look at different translations,

  333. you'll even see they use the word establish.

  334. But what he's saying to them is,

  335. that you would be set up firmly,

  336. that you would be so solid

  337. in your heart and faith foundation,

  338. that you will be blameless

  339. and holy in the presence of our Lord.

  340. And he is talking about the sure completion of the work.

  341. We talked about it already this morning,

  342. talking about the sure completion of the work that was begun,

  343. and it's in the same spirit as Philippians 1,

    Philippians 1:6

  344. verse 6.

  345. God,

  346. who began a good work in them,

  347. will bring it to completion.

  348. It's the same spirit as in Colossians 3,

    Colossians 3:4

  349. verse 4,

  350. when it says,

  351. when Christ,

  352. who is your life,

  353. appears,

  354. then you also will appear with him in glory.

  355. It's about the completion of the work that had begun,

  356. and it's not just about their daily walk,

  357. and their daily sanctification.

  358. It's about the completion of the race.

  359. Running the race well.

  360. When Johnny started talking this morning,

  361. I thought,

  362. oh,

  363. do I need to go home?

  364. Is he going to actually give my whole message?

  365. But I think we're okay.

  366. It's about the holding fast,

  367. and running of the race well,

  368. and the perfect completion of God's work.

  369. When we come into glory with Jesus,

  370. and he is saying,

  371. as we've been reminded,

  372. keep your eyes focused,

  373. the Lord is coming back,

  374. and he goes on to talk more about this later in his letters,

  375. but that's where we come to today.

  376. He's saying to them,

  377. be set up towards the goal,

  378. the goal that is set for you.

  379. So that's what he's been saying to the Thessalonians,

  380. a quick rundown through.

  381. So what's he been saying to us?

  382. Well,

  383. we have time to do so much.

  384. There is so much in these verses,

  385. you could come back to them time and time again.

  386. And as I was praying,

  387. and reading through these verses,

  388. this is the way it came to me to work through it this morning.

  389. There is a view to what's coming.

  390. There is a view to the glorious heaven.

  391. There is a view to what the completed work is.

  392. When we leave this realm,

  393. we leave this earth and we go to heaven.

  394. And we are reminded in so many places

  395. that we are to have our hearts and minds set on heavenly goals.

  396. But this morning,

  397. I want to talk about what I see in these verses

  398. that bring us along that path,

  399. along that journey.

  400. In verse 6,

  401. there was a good account.

  402. Well then surely,

  403. as Paul got a good account back,

  404. we surely have to ask,

  405. if somebody came to bring an account of us back

  406. to the first people

  407. who brought us the word of God,

  408. what would their account be?

  409. For me,

  410. the Lord led me to Lee Valley Bible Church

  411. in Ballin College where I go now.

  412. And,

  413. through God's grace,

  414. people opened the word to me.

  415. And very quickly I realised I was born again.

  416. And I went on.

  417. But there was people there

  418. who spent time with me,

  419. teaching me,

  420. fellowshipping with me,

  421. praying with me,

  422. and praying for me.

  423. Who brought me deeper

  424. into a relationship with Jesus,

  425. with the work of the Holy Spirit.

  426. So what would the report be of me now

  427. back to those people?

  428. What would the report be

  429. of you

  430. back to the person,

  431. to the people

  432. who first shepherded you

  433. in the way of Christ?

  434. Would their joy

  435. be the same as Paul's?

  436. As I woke this morning,

  437. I thought,

  438. don't use an Olympics example.

  439. Don't use an Olympics illustration,

  440. but I can't help it.

  441. It's one of my favourite illustrations.

  442. When we talk about this,

  443. what would the report be back?

  444. I don't want anybody

  445. to get into a frame of mind

  446. where something's gone wrong

  447. this week

  448. or this period in your life

  449. and you feel down

  450. and you feel low

  451. and you feel that

  452. I'm setting a target

  453. that's so high for you

  454. that you can't reach

  455. and that you feel like

  456. I'm taking out a stick

  457. to beat you with.

  458. I just want you to think.

  459. What would the report be?

  460. And like the high jumper,

  461. I think I used this example here

  462. before.

  463. I use it a lot,

  464. maybe because I did

  465. a little bit of high jump

  466. in school.

  467. But you don't set the bar

  468. down low

  469. and go,

  470. yeah, look,

  471. I got that.

  472. One metre ten.

  473. A high jumper wants to set it.

  474. You're going for the high jump.

  475. We're trying to reach high.

  476. But the great thing

  477. about the high jump

  478. in the Olympics

  479. is if you do miss it,

  480. there's a great big mat

  481. to catch you on the other side.

  482. When you're examining yourself,

  483. do not let the devil

  484. drive you down

  485. with self-examination.

  486. Let the report be good.

  487. If you see something

  488. working it,

  489. the mat to catch you

  490. are the loving

  491. outstretched arms

  492. of Jesus Christ.

  493. But would the report say

  494. that your faith

  495. has deepened

  496. since those first days?

  497. Are we striving in prayer

  498. and study of the word

  499. and in meditation

  500. of the word

  501. and calling on God

  502. to have our faith

  503. grow in love

  504. and not just love

  505. for each other,

  506. so often

  507. when we encounter

  508. that word

  509. and the word love,

  510. people start talking

  511. about the love

  512. we have for each other.

  513. But we have to think

  514. about the love

  515. we have for the Lord.

  516. Are we in love

  517. with the Lord?

  518. When you first came

  519. to the Lord,

  520. did it consume you?

  521. Does that love

  522. still consume you?

  523. Are you growing steadily

  524. and strengthening

  525. that love constantly

  526. in faith and love?

  527. It says.

  528. And I almost want

  529. to find the word

  530. hope here.

  531. But Paul has hoped.

  532. He has hoped

  533. for a good report

  534. and that he has hoped

  535. that their faith

  536. would hold fast

  537. based on the gospel.

  538. So we have faith

  539. with hope and love

  540. and we have to live

  541. in the light

  542. of that hope.

  543. And that hope

  544. is stored up for us

  545. in heaven

  546. which is the love

  547. of Christ

  548. shown for us

  549. in the gospel

  550. of our Lord Jesus Christ

  551. shown for us

  552. in nail-pierced

  553. hands and feet

  554. shown for us

  555. by the stripes

  556. on him

  557. by which we are healed.

  558. So could we strive

  559. that there would be

  560. a good report of us

  561. a good report of us

  562. as faithful servants

  563. and not that it would

  564. just be a good report

  565. of what a great character

  566. we are.

  567. You know like something

  568. you know you get

  569. Josephine Sofa

  570. she's great crack.

  571. She's great in the night out.

  572. Or Joseph

  573. oh do you know what

  574. now if you need

  575. your wall fixed

  576. or you need

  577. the place cleaned

  578. Joe's the man to go for.

  579. They're great

  580. to have that character.

  581. But a report

  582. that says

  583. you love

  584. the Lord Jesus Christ

  585. above all else.

  586. That you serve

  587. God the Father.

  588. That you seek

  589. the Holy Spirit

  590. and his way.

  591. And that it is

  592. all that you are

  593. and all that we are

  594. and all that we live

  595. and is clearly visible

  596. in our lives.

  597. Do we value

  598. reports like this?

  599. Do we value

  600. that that's what we think

  601. of other people

  602. and that's what

  603. we should put first

  604. when we want

  605. to think about them?

  606. And that's what

  607. we should put first

  608. in the idea of ourselves

  609. when we want people

  610. to think about us

  611. so that we have

  612. pleasant memories

  613. of people.

  614. It breaks my heart

  615. and I don't say

  616. this lightly.

  617. It breaks my heart

  618. the number of times

  619. I have had it said

  620. to me

  621. when I mention

  622. somebody's name

  623. and the response

  624. goes along

  625. oh yeah yeah

  626. you know

  627. but they're always

  628. bringing everything

  629. back to the Bible

  630. or they're always

  631. trying to spiritualize

  632. everything

  633. or talk about

  634. spiritual things.

  635. It breaks my heart

  636. when that's the response.

  637. To me

  638. that's the greatest

  639. report

  640. that could be made

  641. about someone.

  642. If that's what

  643. somebody was saying

  644. about me

  645. I'd have to tell you

  646. I would be pleased.

  647. I don't know

  648. any of you here

  649. maybe that is not

  650. a problem here

  651. but it is one

  652. I have encountered.

  653. But if it is a problem

  654. we need to do

  655. something about ourselves

  656. if our memories

  657. of people

  658. are tainted

  659. by the fact

  660. that they're spiritual

  661. and properly

  662. spiritual.

  663. If we truly

  664. have faith

  665. and love

  666. growing

  667. and love

  668. for the Lord

  669. feeding out

  670. into a love

  671. that we have

  672. for everybody else

  673. then surely

  674. our memories

  675. will be pleasant

  676. of our brothers

  677. and sisters

  678. because we

  679. will remember

  680. that we

  681. are sinners

  682. saved by grace

  683. and we have

  684. the same grace

  685. poured out on us

  686. and the same mercy

  687. given to us

  688. and just

  689. like everybody else

  690. that not one of us

  691. is perfect.

  692. Not one of us

  693. got in here

  694. clean this morning.

  695. we are all sinners

  696. and if we would

  697. keep that in mind

  698. and take the time

  699. to look

  700. to look in love

  701. at everyone

  702. around us

  703. and you know

  704. the expression

  705. to look through

  706. rose tinted glasses

  707. could we look at people

  708. with righteousness

  709. tinted glasses

  710. not self-righteousness

  711. certainly not our own

  712. self-righteousness

  713. but the righteousness

  714. that they are clothed

  715. in

  716. by the completed

  717. work of Jesus

  718. the righteousness

  719. that God sees

  720. covering

  721. each other

  722. because

  723. of what Jesus

  724. has done

  725. so that we will

  726. see that

  727. and we will

  728. take pleasure

  729. in each other's

  730. company

  731. and miss each other

  732. and long to see

  733. each other

  734. like they did.

  735. Maybe that leads us

  736. naturally into

  737. verse 7

  738. where he says

  739. therefore brothers

  740. in all our distress

  741. and persecution

  742. we were encouraged

  743. about you

  744. because of your faith

  745. in all their distress

  746. and persecution

  747. they were tied up

  748. and I don't mean

  749. tied up

  750. in what most of us

  751. call being tied up

  752. today

  753. like with

  754. you know

  755. I'm so tied up

  756. with my schedule

  757. it wasn't just

  758. a hectic life

  759. that kept them busy

  760. they were in real

  761. real trouble

  762. and they're letting

  763. the Thessalonians

  764. know that they were

  765. in real trouble

  766. and in that trouble

  767. what encouraged them

  768. the steadfast faith

  769. of those

  770. in Thessalonica

  771. they were

  772. uplifted

  773. and the other thing

  774. that I see

  775. is remarkable

  776. in this

  777. and again

  778. maybe you have

  779. this figured out

  780. and you have

  781. taken me aside

  782. afterwards

  783. and speak to me

  784. more severely

  785. Paul was in

  786. serious trouble

  787. when he wrote

  788. this letter

  789. but where

  790. is his focus

  791. his focus

  792. is on faith

  793. and love

  794. and his focus

  795. is on seeing

  796. them

  797. his focus

  798. in his trouble

  799. is on the gospel

  800. his focus

  801. is on his love

  802. for them

  803. he's not wallowing

  804. in self pity

  805. he's not getting

  806. so wrapped up

  807. in his own concerns

  808. that he's forgetting

  809. about them

  810. so I believe

  811. there is a reminder

  812. for us here

  813. to not get lost

  814. in our struggles

  815. it is so easy

  816. for us to feel

  817. depressed

  818. it is so easy

  819. for us to feel

  820. troubled

  821. and I don't

  822. think that where

  823. we live today

  824. we're persecuted

  825. much

  826. not in the way

  827. these guys

  828. were persecuted

  829. we can have

  830. difficulties

  831. in our families

  832. we can

  833. if you're very

  834. vocal about your

  835. faith

  836. where you work

  837. you certainly

  838. can have

  839. difficulties

  840. but in the kind

  841. of persecution

  842. where you're

  843. taken from your

  844. home

  845. without warning

  846. you're beaten

  847. you're arrested

  848. you're put in prison

  849. you're executed

  850. we don't have

  851. those kind of

  852. struggles

  853. but we do

  854. have life struggles

  855. but don't get

  856. lost

  857. in the struggles

  858. is a message

  859. to us here

  860. there are

  861. other people

  862. around us

  863. and we are

  864. building lives

  865. based on the

  866. gospel

  867. in faith

  868. hope

  869. and love

  870. as Alex

  871. said

  872. look around

  873. be encouraged

  874. and be encouraged

  875. helping each other

  876. to grow

  877. in that faith

  878. as we hold

  879. these things

  880. important

  881. and keep a focus

  882. on what is right

  883. the things that

  884. people do

  885. in service

  886. of the Lord

  887. will encourage us

  888. in our difficulties

  889. and as we serve

  890. we'll encourage people

  891. and we'll keep

  892. moving forward

  893. so that's just

  894. two things

  895. have a good account

  896. that people

  897. would have a good

  898. account of us

  899. and that we

  900. wouldn't get lost

  901. in the struggle

  902. the third thing

  903. I want to move

  904. on to this

  905. morning is

  906. he tells them

  907. now we really

  908. live since you

  909. are standing

  910. firm

  911. in the struggle

  912. there will always

  913. be a temptation

  914. to quit

  915. my wife

  916. will tell you

  917. this is one

  918. of my biggest

  919. struggles

  920. when things

  921. start to go

  922. wrong

  923. the temptation

  924. to quit

  925. comes down

  926. on top of me

  927. the devil

  928. knows where

  929. my weakness

  930. is on this

  931. I come from

  932. a long line

  933. of quitters

  934. it is ingrained

  935. into me

  936. and I struggle

  937. with this

  938. but this has

  939. encouraged me

  940. so much

  941. everybody's going

  942. to have different

  943. areas

  944. fight the temptation

  945. to quit

  946. in whatever it is

  947. don't quit

  948. loving

  949. don't quit

  950. hoping

  951. don't quit

  952. looking at

  953. each other

  954. with righteousness

  955. tinted glasses

  956. remembering

  957. how much

  958. you've been

  959. saved from

  960. in grief

  961. in trouble

  962. in difficulty

  963. there will always

  964. be a temptation

  965. to hide

  966. but we do

  967. need to remind

  968. each other

  969. that God

  970. is sovereign

  971. and he knows

  972. where we are

  973. he knows

  974. where we've

  975. come from

  976. and he knows

  977. where we're

  978. going to be

  979. we need to

  980. run that race

  981. well

  982. it all

  983. feeds in

  984. together

  985. their steadfast

  986. stand

  987. encouraged Paul

  988. Paul's joy

  989. in their

  990. steadfast

  991. stand

  992. encouraged

  993. them

  994. we need

  995. to talk

  996. to each

  997. other

  998. about

  999. what's

  1000. really

  1001. going

  1002. on

  1003. Paul

  1004. has let

  1005. them

  1006. know

  1007. how he's

  1008. doing

  1009. how he felt

  1010. about them

  1011. and that

  1012. lifted them

  1013. up

  1014. it's a

  1015. two way

  1016. thing

  1017. he's

  1018. communicating

  1019. with them

  1020. they're

  1021. communicating

  1022. back

  1023. and it

  1024. seems very

  1025. open and

  1026. honest and

  1027. frank

  1028. so as we

  1029. stand firm

  1030. we encourage

  1031. others by

  1032. taking a

  1033. stand but

  1034. we need to

  1035. speak to

  1036. each other

  1037. really really

  1038. speak to

  1039. each other

  1040. to let each

  1041. other know

  1042. how we feel

  1043. really feel

  1044. about what's

  1045. going on in

  1046. our lives

  1047. we can fall

  1048. into the trap

  1049. that really

  1050. godly people

  1051. paint on a

  1052. smile

  1053. and everything

  1054. is

  1055. hunky

  1056. dory

  1057. it's not

  1058. hunky

  1059. dory

  1060. some of

  1061. the greatest

  1062. fathers of

  1063. the faith

  1064. right from

  1065. back as

  1066. far as

  1067. Peter

  1068. up to

  1069. now

  1070. have had

  1071. dark

  1072. days of

  1073. the soul

  1074. where it

  1075. all felt

  1076. like it

  1077. was falling

  1078. apart

  1079. don't think

  1080. you're alone

  1081. but if we

  1082. all look at

  1083. each other

  1084. and I'm going

  1085. to say it

  1086. again with

  1087. righteousness

  1088. tinted

  1089. glasses

  1090. we can

  1091. build a

  1092. trust that

  1093. allows us

  1094. to really

  1095. open up

  1096. with as

  1097. many people

  1098. as we

  1099. can

  1100. where we

  1101. don't look

  1102. at the

  1103. troubles

  1104. and the

  1105. faults

  1106. and everything

  1107. else

  1108. and we

  1109. really do

  1110. help each

  1111. other

  1112. and our

  1113. churches are

  1114. changing

  1115. we have

  1116. multicultural

  1117. churches

  1118. with people

  1119. from different

  1120. countries

  1121. and you know

  1122. what

  1123. for Irish

  1124. people here

  1125. some of

  1126. our brothers

  1127. and sisters

  1128. from different

  1129. places can

  1130. really help

  1131. us with this

  1132. one

  1133. because as

  1134. Irish

  1135. people

  1136. how are

  1137. you going

  1138. grand

  1139. how are

  1140. you in

  1141. Ireland

  1142. is not a

  1143. question

  1144. it's a

  1145. greeting

  1146. and our

  1147. reflex

  1148. is grand

  1149. one of

  1150. the simplest

  1151. things we

  1152. can start

  1153. doing to

  1154. each other

  1155. and again

  1156. I work with

  1157. a South

  1158. African lady

  1159. and when she

  1160. started working

  1161. with us

  1162. it was kind

  1163. of funny

  1164. I come in

  1165. the morning

  1166. how are you

  1167. and she

  1168. would start

  1169. to tell me

  1170. and she'd be

  1171. five minutes

  1172. into telling

  1173. me and she'd

  1174. go oh

  1175. sorry you just

  1176. were saying

  1177. good morning

  1178. weren't you

  1179. and I was

  1180. saying you

  1181. know what

  1182. you've taught

  1183. me something

  1184. so now I

  1185. make a point

  1186. when I actually

  1187. want to know

  1188. I say somebody

  1189. how are you

  1190. and I go

  1191. grand

  1192. no no no

  1193. how are you

  1194. and there's a

  1195. woman who goes

  1196. to our church

  1197. and she catches

  1198. me every Sunday

  1199. morning going

  1200. out the door

  1201. and she goes

  1202. how are you

  1203. and I do it

  1204. I go grand

  1205. and she's

  1206. how are you

  1207. and we have

  1208. learned so

  1209. much about

  1210. how God

  1211. works in our

  1212. lives

  1213. and those

  1214. times of

  1215. prayer

  1216. I've got

  1217. sidetracked

  1218. sorry

  1219. we have to

  1220. stand fast

  1221. we have to

  1222. come together

  1223. we have to

  1224. encourage each

  1225. other

  1226. and thank God

  1227. in all the joy

  1228. that we share

  1229. while we're doing

  1230. those things

  1231. we have to care

  1232. about the

  1233. spiritual welfare

  1234. of our brothers

  1235. and sisters

  1236. we have to

  1237. care deeply

  1238. does it

  1239. actually excite

  1240. us

  1241. does it thrill

  1242. us

  1243. when we see

  1244. our brothers

  1245. and sisters

  1246. going on

  1247. well in

  1248. our walk

  1249. does it

  1250. thrill you

  1251. when you see

  1252. your brother

  1253. and sister

  1254. come to a

  1255. difficult time

  1256. and they

  1257. stand fast

  1258. or does it

  1259. carelessly

  1260. pass you

  1261. by

  1262. we live

  1263. in a very

  1264. me

  1265. orientated

  1266. society

  1267. our whole

  1268. western world

  1269. is based

  1270. on the

  1271. I

  1272. the individual

  1273. as Christians

  1274. we have to

  1275. get past it

  1276. we really

  1277. have to work

  1278. to get past

  1279. it

  1280. our struggles

  1281. our joys

  1282. our triumphs

  1283. our losses

  1284. are shared

  1285. together

  1286. we are

  1287. united

  1288. together

  1289. in Christ

  1290. we are

  1291. fully

  1292. joined

  1293. together

  1294. in Christ

  1295. so that's

  1296. three things

  1297. a good

  1298. account

  1299. don't get

  1300. lost in

  1301. the struggle

  1302. stand firm

  1303. and pray

  1304. pray deeply

  1305. and never

  1306. stop

  1307. Paul has his

  1308. prayer section

  1309. here he does

  1310. it in all

  1311. his letters

  1312. he has a

  1313. prayer section

  1314. and he's

  1315. praying

  1316. and he is

  1317. pleading

  1318. and I'm

  1319. heavy on

  1320. the Spurgeon

  1321. quotes at the

  1322. moment because

  1323. I've just

  1324. read two

  1325. books on

  1326. Spurgeon

  1327. but Spurgeon

  1328. said that

  1329. prayer is

  1330. the throbbing

  1331. machine that

  1332. drives the

  1333. church

  1334. well pray

  1335. ceaselessly

  1336. day and

  1337. night

  1338. never ever

  1339. stop praying

  1340. and pray

  1341. that we

  1342. would build

  1343. churches that

  1344. look like

  1345. this

  1346. that we

  1347. would work

  1348. together with

  1349. the Holy Spirit

  1350. with God the

  1351. Father with

  1352. the Lord Jesus

  1353. to build what

  1354. is lacking in

  1355. each other's

  1356. faith

  1357. faith

  1358. we have to

  1359. build the

  1360. trust and

  1361. love together

  1362. so that we

  1363. can share

  1364. with each

  1365. other fully

  1366. so that if we

  1367. lovingly see

  1368. what the needs

  1369. are we can

  1370. speak into

  1371. the needs

  1372. that if we

  1373. truly care

  1374. we can get

  1375. alongside someone

  1376. and help them

  1377. and avoid the

  1378. trap of falling

  1379. into the

  1380. mindset of

  1381. going oh I

  1382. wish so and

  1383. so would just

  1384. insert your

  1385. own personal

  1386. gripe here

  1387. because that's

  1388. what can happen

  1389. to us we

  1390. can get into

  1391. that frame of

  1392. mind oh would

  1393. they ever just

  1394. do it my

  1395. way or why

  1396. aren't they

  1397. doing whatever

  1398. we have our

  1399. personal gripes

  1400. if we have to

  1401. pray endlessly

  1402. so we don't

  1403. even have to go

  1404. and talk to

  1405. people but if

  1406. we see things

  1407. that we will

  1408. pray pray pray

  1409. pray pray and

  1410. rely on the

  1411. Lord in that

  1412. prayer to make

  1413. your love

  1414. increase and

  1415. overflow for

  1416. each other and

  1417. for everyone

  1418. it's often said

  1419. to me if we

  1420. could just love

  1421. each other a

  1422. little bit more

  1423. we'd be doing

  1424. better but that's

  1425. starting from the

  1426. wrong end you've

  1427. got to love the

  1428. Lord first so

  1429. that love will

  1430. flow out the

  1431. Lord has to be

  1432. involved from the

  1433. very beginning

  1434. seeking the

  1435. Lord's way is

  1436. what we need

  1437. we have a

  1438. responsibility to

  1439. grow and work

  1440. we cannot

  1441. simply sit

  1442. still and

  1443. expect to

  1444. grow now we

  1445. can sit still

  1446. and know the

  1447. Lord and spend

  1448. time with the

  1449. Lord but growth

  1450. takes effort

  1451. and as a

  1452. plant needs

  1453. all the

  1454. elements for

  1455. growth the

  1456. correct soil

  1457. the right

  1458. temperature light

  1459. and moisture

  1460. we like the

  1461. plants need

  1462. the right

  1463. conditions for

  1464. growth we

  1465. need to

  1466. balance our

  1467. lives properly

  1468. with time

  1469. spent in

  1470. the word

  1471. in meditation

  1472. in prayer

  1473. in proper

  1474. Christian

  1475. fellowship with

  1476. one another

  1477. where we share

  1478. our burdens

  1479. in the light of

  1480. the gospel so

  1481. we build something

  1482. that is solid

  1483. and lasting

  1484. we need to

  1485. build a

  1486. solid wall in

  1487. our lives

  1488. and the

  1489. foundation

  1490. has to be

  1491. Jesus

  1492. so that we

  1493. will start to

  1494. look like what

  1495. we're supposed to

  1496. look like

  1497. like in Romans

  1498. in chapter 12

  1499. where we are

  1500. told be

  1501. devoted to

  1502. one another

  1503. flee from

  1504. evil cling to

  1505. what is good

  1506. it's by doing

  1507. all these things

  1508. in proper

  1509. balance that

  1510. the Lord will

  1511. set us up

  1512. firmly where

  1513. we are

  1514. and we

  1515. will know

  1516. the joy

  1517. of the

  1518. presence

  1519. of God

  1520. the Father

  1521. when the

  1522. Lord comes

  1523. with all

  1524. his holy

  1525. ones

  1526. we have

  1527. to be set

  1528. up

  1529. towards the

  1530. goal

  1531. there is

  1532. a lot

  1533. lot more

  1534. that can be

  1535. said about

  1536. these verses

  1537. some people

  1538. might have

  1539. wanted me

  1540. to spend

  1541. more time

  1542. focusing on

  1543. the last

  1544. verses

  1545. and talking

  1546. about the

  1547. heavenly things

  1548. where we

  1549. should have

  1550. our minds

  1551. and hearts

  1552. set

  1553. if you

  1554. want me to

  1555. continue for

  1556. another half

  1557. an hour

  1558. I'd be happy

  1559. to do that

  1560. now

  1561. no

  1562. but we've

  1563. had five

  1564. things

  1565. let the

  1566. account be

  1567. good

  1568. don't get

  1569. lost in the

  1570. struggle

  1571. stand firm

  1572. pray and

  1573. never stop

  1574. for everything

  1575. and everyone

  1576. we need to

  1577. keep our

  1578. eyes fixed

  1579. on that

  1580. point

  1581. on Jesus

  1582. the author

  1583. and perfecter

  1584. the author

  1585. and finisher

  1586. of our

  1587. faith

  1588. Jesus is

  1589. coming again

  1590. and all

  1591. this struggle

  1592. all this

  1593. life

  1594. all this

  1595. thing that

  1596. clutters up

  1597. our existence

  1598. will be swept

  1599. away

  1600. we live

  1601. in the certain

  1602. hope of the

  1603. coming of the

  1604. Lord

  1605. he will

  1606. return

  1607. and we do

  1608. not look at

  1609. the things

  1610. which are

  1611. seen

  1612. but we look

  1613. at the things

  1614. which are

  1615. unseen

  1616. and like

  1617. Paul

  1618. who longed

  1619. greatly

  1620. after heaven

  1621. we need

  1622. to know

  1623. that as

  1624. we groan

  1625. on this

  1626. earth

  1627. we have

  1628. a greater

  1629. finish

  1630. than the

  1631. beginning

  1632. we had

  1633. for while

  1634. we are in

  1635. this tent

  1636. we groan

  1637. and are

  1638. burdened

  1639. because we

  1640. do not

  1641. wish to be

  1642. unclothed

  1643. but to be

  1644. clothed

  1645. with our

  1646. heavenly

  1647. dwelling

  1648. so that

  1649. what is

  1650. mortal

  1651. may be

  1652. swallowed

  1653. up

  1654. by

  1655. life

  1656. the

  1657. life

  1658. that

  1659. is

  1660. in

  1661. the

  1662. resurrection

  1663. and

  1664. Jonathan

  1665. Edwards

  1666. said

  1667. in this

  1668. the apostle

  1669. Paul

  1670. acted

  1671. as

  1672. becomes

  1673. a

  1674. Christian

  1675. for

  1676. those

  1677. who

  1678. are

  1679. indeed

  1680. Christians

  1681. don't

  1682. belong

  1683. to

  1684. this

  1685. world

  1686. and

  1687. therefore

  1688. it

  1689. is

  1690. very

  1691. unbecoming

  1692. in them

  1693. to have

  1694. their

  1695. minds

  1696. taken

  1697. up

  1698. by

  1699. these

  1700. things

  1701. the

  1702. example

  1703. of

  1704. Paul

  1705. may

  1706. make

  1707. all

  1708. people

  1709. ashamed

  1710. whose

  1711. minds

  1712. are

  1713. occupied

  1714. chiefly

  1715. with

  1716. things

  1717. of

  1718. this

  1719. world

  1720. or

  1721. about

  1722. gaining

  1723. estates

  1724. or

  1725. acquiring

  1726. honours

  1727. we

  1728. have

  1729. feet

  1730. of

  1731. clay

  1732. and

  1733. we

  1734. look

  1735. down

  1736. so

  1737. easily

  1738. but

  1739. just

  1740. like

  1741. Stephen

  1742. when he

  1743. stood

  1744. in front

  1745. of the

  1746. Sanhedrin

  1747. and it

  1748. was

  1749. coming

  1750. apart

  1751. and

  1752. everything

  1753. was

  1754. coming

  1755. down

  1756. on top

  1757. of him

  1758. we

  1759. have

  1760. to

  1761. get

  1762. our

  1763. eyes

  1764. off

  1765. our

  1766. feet

  1767. we

  1768. have

  1769. to

  1770. get

  1771. our

  1772. eyes

  1773. off

  1774. our

  1775. difficulties

  1776. we

  1777. have

  1778. to

  1779. look

  1780. up

  1781. and

  1782. see

  1783. the

  1784. glory

  1785. of

  1786. God

  1787. and

  1788. the

  1789. Son

  1790. of

  1791. Man

  1792. seated

  1793. at

  1794. his

  1795. right

  1796. hand

  1797. side

  1798. and

  1799. we

  1800. have

  1801. to

  1802. know

  1803. that

  1804. power

  1805. and

  1806. seek

  1807. that

  1808. power

  1809. and

  1810. live

  1811. in

  1812. the

  1813. light

  1814. of

  1815. that

  1816. power

  1817. so

  1818. now

  1819. may

  1820. our

  1821. God

  1822. and

  1823. Father

  1824. himself

  1825. and

  1826. our

  1827. Lord

  1828. Jesus

  1829. clear

  1830. the

  1831. way

  1832. for

  1833. us

  1834. to

  1835. come

  1836. insert

  1837. here

  1838. for

  1839. you

  1840. to

  1841. go

  1842. to

  1843. each

  1844. other

  1845. in

  1846. love

  1847. may

  1848. the

  1849. Lord

  1850. make

  1851. your

  1852. love

  1853. increase

  1854. and

  1855. overflow

  1856. for

  1857. each

  1858. other

  1859. and

  1860. for

  1861. everyone

  1862. else

  1863. just

  1864. as

  1865. ours

  1866. does

  1867. for

  1868. you

  1869. may

  1870. he

  1871. strengthen

  1872. your

  1873. hearts

  1874. so

  1875. that

  1876. you

  1877. will

  1878. be

  1879. blameless

  1880. and

  1881. holy

  1882. in

  1883. the

  1884. presence

  1885. of

  1886. a

  1887. God

  1888. and

  1889. Father

  1890. when

  1891. our

  1892. Lord

  1893. Jesus

  1894. comes

  1895. with

  1896. all

  1897. his

  1898. holy

  1899. ones

  1900. Heavenly

  1901. Father

  1902. I

  1903. thank

  1904. you

  1905. for

  1906. your

  1907. word

  1908. I

  1909. thank

  1910. you

  1911. for

  1912. this

  1913. time

  1914. this

  1915. morning

  1916. I

  1917. pray

  1918. Father

  1919. that

  1920. it

  1921. will

  1922. be

  1923. used

  1924. and

  1925. that

  1926. I

  1927. have

  1928. been

  1929. faithful

  1930. to

  1931. your

  1932. message

  1933. Amen
