  1. 1005, Acts chapter 13. I'm sorry, I've given the wrong number. Mine says 1005. The correct

    Acts 13 chapter mention

  2. page is 1107. There we go. 1107 if you're using a church red covered Bible. It's exactly

  3. the same, just different colour. On page 1107, Acts chapter 13, verses 1 to 12. Now just

    Acts 13:1–12

  4. a pointer before we start reading. About a year ago, about 18 months ago actually, as

  5. a church we looked at Acts chapter 1 through to Acts chapter 12. So now we're starting in

Acts 1 chapter mention Acts 12 chapter mention

  6. afresh looking at Acts chapter 13. So we've done 1 to 12 before and we're starting into

    Acts 13 chapter mention

  7. Acts chapter 13. So let's read verse 1 through to verse 12. Let's read together.

    Acts 13 chapter mention

  8. In the church at Antioch there were prophets and teachers. Barnabas, Simeon called Niger,

  9. Lucius of Cyrene, Manian, who had been bought up with Herod the Tetrarch, and Saul. While

  10. they were worshipping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, Set apart from me Barnabas

  11. and Saul, for the work to which I have called them. So after they had fasted and prayed, they

  12. placed their hands on them and sent them off. The two of them, sent on their way by the Holy

  13. Spirit, went down to Seleucia and sailed from there to Cyprus. When they arrived at Salamis,

  14. they proclaimed the word of God in the Jewish synagogues. John was with them as their helper.

  15. They travelled through the whole island until they came to Paphos. There they met a Jewish

  16. sorcerer, a false prophet named Bar-Jesus, who was an attendant of the proconsul, Sergius

  17. Paulus. The proconsul, an intelligent man, sent for Barnabas and Saul because he wanted to hear

  18. the word of God. But Elymas, the sorcerer, for that is what his name means, opposed them and tried

  19. to turn the proconsul from the faith. Then Saul, who was also called Paul, filled with the Holy Spirit,

  20. looked straight at Elymas and said, You are a child of the devil and an enemy of everything that is

  21. right. You are full of all kinds of deceit and trickery. Will you never stop perverting the right

  22. ways of the Lord? Now the hand of the Lord is against you. You are going to go blind, and for a time

  23. you will be unable to see the light of the sun. Immediately mist and darkness came over him,

  24. and he groped about seeking someone to lead him by the hand. When the proconsul saw what had happened,

  25. he believed, for he was amazed at the teaching about the Lord. Well, I'm going to pray and ask for

  26. God's help for us all, and then we're going to look at this section together. So let's pray.

  27. Father, we thank you again for all that you give to us, and we thank you that we have your word,

  28. the Bible, in our language. Thank you that we can read about things that you have done,

  29. and things that you continue to do in the world today. Please help us with the help of your Holy

  30. Spirit to understand your word, and how it applies to us today. In Jesus' name. Amen.

  31. Well, there are notes around. You can take notes and ask questions afterwards, and there's some

  32. headings on the screen to help us along. Well, this morning, as I say, we are starting into a new

  33. series, a new study where we'll be looking at the book of Acts. Acts is all about God's great mission.

  34. We're told what that mission is right at the beginning of the book. So if you go to chapter one

  35. of Acts, back a few pages, Acts chapter one, right at the very beginning, we are told what the mission

  36. is all about. We'll pick it up in verse three.

  37. So keep your finger in chapter 13 and chapter one, verse three.

  38. So this is Jesus, after his death, his resurrection, speaking to his disciples. Verse three, it says,

  39. after his suffering, after his death, he showed himself to these men and gave many convincing

  40. proves that he was alive. He appeared to them over a period of 40 days and spoke about the kingdom

  41. of God. Well, what did he have to say? Well, go down to verse eight. He gave some instructions.

  42. He says, you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you. That's a supernatural power.

  43. And you will be my witnesses because they had seen the life of Jesus. They had witnessed his death

  44. and they had witnessed his resurrection. And he calls them now to be his witnesses in Jerusalem

  45. and in all Judea and Samaria and to the ends of the earth. So God's great mission is quite simple.

  46. It's to see the good news of the risen Jesus go into all the world. His plan is that every people group,

  47. every language hears about his son, Jesus Christ. And as we read through the book of Acts,

  48. we can see this mission begin to take effect. There's a couple of maps on the screen now,

  49. which will help you. So chapters one to eight are all about the good news reaching the people

  50. in the city of Jerusalem, which were mainly Jewish people. Then when we get to chapters nine to 12,

  51. it's all about the good news spreading nationally into Judea and beyond the borders of Judea into Samaria.

  52. And then when we reach chapters 13 to 28, well, it's all about the good news moving out into all the world,

  53. into places like Turkey and Greece and into Italy and so forth. It's pushing the boundaries further and further.

  54. Now what I find fascinating is the fact that we are meeting here today, reading the Bible,

  55. 2,000 years after this event, and learning and reading about God's mission,

  56. is actually evidence that God's plan is being accomplished.

  57. It's like a stone or rather a rock that has been dropped into a pond and so the good news has this ripple effect,

  58. spreading out into new lands and to new people, into new areas.

  59. But Acts is much more than just a history lesson about the spread of Christianity.

  60. Acts is really about the good news of Jesus Christ and the need for all people to respond to him.

  61. Now let me show you, let me give you an example of what that good news is.

  62. They've been told to go and be witnesses of Jesus and as they begin to travel out to these places,

  63. they bring the message of Jesus Christ.

  64. I'm going to give you an example of what that message was.

  65. Many places you could go to in Acts, but the one I'm going to show you is in Acts chapter 3, verse 19.

    Acts 3:19

  66. It comes in in two parts.

  67. Acts chapter 3, verse 19.

    Acts 3:19

  68. This was the message, the good news that they sought to bring as they travelled from place to place.

  69. First of all, there is the call to personal repentance.

  70. Verse 19.

  71. This is what he says, verse 19.

  72. Repent then, and turn to God so that your sins may be wiped out,

  73. that times of refreshing may come from the Lord,

  74. and that he may send the Christ, whom he has appointed for you, even Jesus.

  75. So they've been explaining the fact that Jesus Christ had come, he had died on a cross.

  76. Now his death was unique.

  77. It was different to every other kind of death,

  78. because it was a death that was taking the place of us.

  79. Taking the punishment that we deserve for our sins,

  80. for the things that we have done wrong, thought wrong.

  81. And the message here is simple.

  82. Through personal repentance,

  83. we can be forgiven of all our sin,

  84. and we can be freed from the judgment that we deserve.

  85. Now that is good news.

  86. But there's a second part to the message.

  87. There is the promise of universal restoration.

  88. Look at verse 21.

  89. They go on to say that he, that's Jesus,

  90. must remain in heaven until the time comes for God to restore everything,

  91. as he promised long ago through his holy prophets.

  92. Jesus is saying one day he's going to return,

  93. he's going to come back again into this world.

  94. Presently he's in heaven, but he will come back and he will restore,

  95. he's going to put right everything that is broken in this world.

  96. He's going to put an end to all death.

  97. There will be no more funerals.

  98. He will end all decay,

  99. no more disease,

  100. and all destruction will end.

  101. Think about it.

  102. No more wars.

  103. No more hurricanes.

  104. No more suffering.

  105. No more cancer.

  106. No more injustice.

  107. Now, whatever background we come from,

  108. whether we're from a religious background or a non-religious background,

  109. those are the kinds of things we all dream for and we all long for.

  110. That's the kind of world that we all want.

  111. And Jesus says,

  112. one day I'm going to return,

  113. and I'm going to restore everything.

  114. Now that is good news for everyone.

  115. The promise of a universal restoration,

  116. but the way to be part of that

  117. is to respond to Jesus with personal repentance and faith.

  118. And this was the good news that began to spread from the city of Jerusalem,

  119. these few people,

  120. and it began to branch out into all Judea and to Samaria,

  121. breaking boundaries.

  122. But the question to ask is,

  123. how would it then get to the ends of the earth?

  124. How would it get to a little island like Ireland?

  125. How would it reach here?

  126. Well, as the story progresses through Acts,

  127. God's plan is to use his local church for global mission.

  128. Through the church,

  129. God spreads the good news

  130. and the mission of God is accomplished.

  131. And that brings us to chapter 13,

  132. where we are introduced to a church in Antioch,

  133. where the good news begins to spread.

  134. So turn to chapter 13,

  135. and that's where we're going to remain

  136. as we follow through this story together.

  137. So first of all,

  138. local church is all about sending people

  139. with the good news of Jesus.

  140. Verse 1 of chapter 13.

  141. In the church at Antioch,

  142. I think there's a map there, is there?

  143. Where's my...

  144. No, no.

  145. Don't worry.

  146. There it is there.

  147. It's kind of in the south of Turkey,

  148. on the border of modern-day Syria,

  149. so it's probably not a very safe place to be right now,

  150. but nevertheless,

  151. that's where the church was.

  152. You can go back to the original heading.

  153. In the church there,

  154. there were prophets and teachers.

  155. They were the leaders.

  156. There was Barnabas.

  157. He was from the island of Cyprus.

  158. There was Simeon, called Niger.

  159. Lucius of Cyrene.

  160. That was a city in North Africa.

  161. There was Mannion,

  162. who had been bought up with Herod the Tetrarch.

  163. You might remember Herod.

  164. He was the guy who had John the Baptist's head cut off.

  165. They were a mad family, desperate for power,

  166. and would kill anybody to make sure they kept it.

  167. Well, Mannion, well, he was related to that family.

  168. And also part of the church was a man called Saul.

  169. You might remember him as well.

  170. He was that religious fanatic

  171. who used to go around looking for followers of Jesus,

  172. kill them, often by stoning,

  173. and then have them put in prison.

  174. So here we have a culturally, religiously,

  175. and racially diverse bunch of people.

  176. Now, in most cases,

  177. that's really not a good mix, is it?

  178. If you're thinking about a mission to reach the world,

  179. you wouldn't kind of get this collection of people together.

  180. It's a recipe for disaster.

  181. They're all going to be arguing and fighting.

  182. But what unites them all together

  183. is that they have all heard the good news about Jesus.

  184. You can see that in chapter 11, verse 20.

  185. As people went about with the news,

  186. verse 20, it says,

  187. Some of them, however, men from Cyprus and Cyrene,

  188. went to Antioch

  189. and began to speak to the Greeks also,

  190. telling them the good news about the Lord Jesus.

  191. The good news of what Christ had done.

  192. The Lord's hand was with them,

  193. and a great number of people believed

  194. and turned to the Lord.

  195. So together now,

  196. these people who've heard the good news,

  197. who've repented,

  198. put their faith in Christ,

  199. they now form this new church at Antioch.

  200. And as we will see,

  201. it is central to God's mission.

  202. Now, that's not unlike the church here at Carragalline.

  203. Although I don't think anybody here

  204. has cut anybody's head off

  205. or related to anybody who's done that.

  206. But the church is made up of people from Ireland,

  207. from England,

  208. from Congo,

  209. from Togo,

  210. from America.

  211. We've even let in somebody from New Zealand.

  212. Rob, sorry.

  213. We all come from different religious backgrounds.

  214. Some people from non-religious backgrounds.

  215. But together,

  216. we are people who've all heard the good news

  217. of Jesus.

  218. And we have, in turn,

  219. responded in repentance,

  220. and we are now united together

  221. as God's people.

  222. But the question is,

  223. what are we to do as a church?

  224. What was this church going to do

  225. that have been brought together?

  226. And more importantly,

  227. who is going to do it?

  228. Well, look at verse 2.

  229. While they were worshipping the Lord

  230. and fasting,

  231. they were praying,

  232. the Holy Spirit said,

  233. set apart for me Barnabas and Saul

  234. for the work to which I have called them.

  235. The work, of course,

  236. was God's great mission,

  237. what we read in chapter 1, verse 8.

  238. The mission to be witnesses.

  239. That was God's primary purpose

  240. for the church,

  241. to send people out with the good news.

  242. And that's why the church exists today.

  243. That's what the role of the church is.

  244. And so here we have a picture

  245. that as this church,

  246. as these believers gather together,

  247. as they were seeking God by praying,

  248. the Holy Spirit motivates,

  249. initiates,

  250. and begins to direct the church

  251. into mission.

  252. Because that's what the Spirit does.

  253. He's a missionary spirit.

  254. He sends the church out.

  255. He highlights

  256. what Jesus had already said

  257. at the beginning.

  258. Reinforces what Christ had said.

  259. It was the same spirit

  260. that prompted Philip

  261. to go and speak to the Ethiopian

  262. in chapter 8.

  263. It's the same spirit

  264. that motivated Peter

  265. to go and speak to Cornelius

  266. in chapter 10.

  267. But I want us to notice here

  268. that the Spirit

  269. is not speaking to an individual

  270. who goes off

  271. and does their own thing.

  272. No, the Spirit here

  273. is speaking to the church

  274. who together become convinced

  275. that this is what God wants.

  276. Verse 3 of chapter 13.

  277. So after they had fasted

  278. and prayed,

  279. they placed their hands on them

  280. as an act of identification

  281. and they sent

  282. Saul and Barnabas off.

  283. Now I think that's a crucial lesson

  284. for the church today.

  285. Church isn't about

  286. a group of individuals

  287. all hearing their own private message

  288. and going off

  289. setting up their own projects.

  290. No, the church is all about

  291. sending representatives

  292. of a local church

  293. following a deliberate decision

  294. by the church

  295. and all inspired

  296. by the Spirit.

  297. And that's what happened

  298. the church in Antioch.

  299. And it's the blueprint

  300. for every church hereafter

  301. including

  302. Carigaline Baptist Church.

  303. And I give you an example

  304. of that for us here.

  305. Peter and Maeve

  306. who we know

  307. who've been with us

  308. well they've just moved

  309. to the US

  310. to America

  311. to study

  312. with the purpose

  313. of coming back

  314. to full time mission.

  315. Peter and Maeve

  316. believed that

  317. God had been calling them.

  318. They've been praying

  319. through it.

  320. As church leaders

  321. we talked with them

  322. and we prayed with them

  323. and we believed that God

  324. by his Spirit

  325. was directing them

  326. into mission

  327. and together as a church

  328. we prayed about it

  329. and being convinced

  330. that this was what was right

  331. the church sent

  332. Peter and Maeve

  333. to America

  334. to study

  335. to train

  336. for future mission work

  337. back in Ireland.

  338. But I don't think

  339. it should stop there

  340. with just a couple of people.

  341. We should continually

  342. be praying

  343. and seeking God

  344. about who should go

  345. and where they should go

  346. because that is

  347. what the church

  348. is all about.

  349. It's about sending people out

  350. and to do anything else

  351. is not really being church

  352. as God called us to be.

  353. The general command

  354. is crystal clear

  355. isn't it?

  356. To spread the good news

  357. of Jesus

  358. throughout all the world.

  359. But for each church

  360. the specific details

  361. of who goes

  362. and where they go

  363. is worked out

  364. as the church

  365. prays

  366. with the help

  367. of God's Spirit

  368. as he initiates

  369. and motivates

  370. and empowers people

  371. as they go

  372. with the good news.

  373. So first of all

  374. the local church

  375. is about sending people

  376. with the good news

  377. of Jesus

  378. and that's what

  379. that church did

  380. and this is what

  381. we should be doing.

  382. The second thing

  383. is this

  384. we're about

  385. global mission

  386. saving people

  387. with the good news

  388. of Jesus.

  389. Look at verse 4

  390. The two of them

  391. that was Barnabas

  392. and Saul

  393. sent on their way

  394. by the Holy Spirit

  395. went down to Seleucia

  396. and sailed

  397. from there

  398. to Cyprus.

  399. So you can see

  400. the little island

  401. there of Cyprus

  402. where they sailed

  403. across to.

  404. There they arrived

  405. at Salamis

  406. which was on the

  407. east coast

  408. and they proclaimed

  409. the word of God.

  410. The word of God

  411. was the gospel

  412. the good news

  413. about Jesus.

  414. And John

  415. was with them

  416. as their helper.

  417. So here we have

  418. a church

  419. taking seriously

  420. the great mission

  421. of God.

  422. Now as we go

  423. about this work

  424. of mission

  425. there's two things

  426. that we should expect.

  427. The first is this

  428. opposition to Jesus.

  429. Let's meet these

  430. characters

  431. in verses 6

  432. and 7.

  433. Let's read verse 6.

  434. They travelled

  435. through the whole island

  436. until they came

  437. to Paphos

  438. which was over

  439. on the west.

  440. Incidentally

  441. isn't it great

  442. that some people

  443. get called

  444. to a lovely

  445. sunny island

  446. like Cyprus

  447. and others

  448. get called

  449. to rainy Ireland

  450. but that's okay.

  451. While they were

  452. there on Paphos

  453. there they met

  454. a Jewish sorcerer

  455. somebody who was

  456. involved

  457. in the occult.

  458. He was a false

  459. prophet

  460. named Bar-Jesus

  461. who was an

  462. attendant

  463. like a secretary

  464. to the proconsul

  465. Sergius Paulus.

  466. Now remember

  467. Cyprus was all part

  468. of the Roman Empire.

  469. They were the big

  470. force at the time.

  471. They were in charge

  472. and Sergius Paulus

  473. was obviously

  474. the man sent

  475. to govern

  476. or look after

  477. the island of Cyprus.

  478. That was his job.

  479. And this Jewish

  480. sorcerer Bar-Jesus

  481. was an attendant

  482. to him.

  483. But what was

  484. this Sergius Paulus

  485. like?

  486. Well look at the

  487. rest of verse 7.

  488. The proconsul

  489. was an intelligent

  490. man.

  491. He wasn't

  492. easily duped.

  493. So he sent

  494. for Barnabas

  495. and Saul

  496. because

  497. well he

  498. wanted to

  499. hear for himself

  500. the word

  501. of God

  502. the good news

  503. about Jesus.

  504. He wanted

  505. to know

  506. who is Jesus?

  507. What did he

  508. have to say?

  509. And well if

  510. this Jesus

  511. is true

  512. what should

  513. I do about it?

  514. But there's

  515. a problem

  516. isn't there?

  517. The problem

  518. is verse 8.

  519. This guy

  520. Elymas

  521. the sorcerer

  522. for that is

  523. what his name

  524. means.

  525. He opposed

  526. them and

  527. tried to

  528. turn the

  529. proconsul

  530. from the

  531. faith.

  532. Now it's

  533. ironic that

  534. his name

  535. is also

  536. Bar-Jesus

  537. which simply

  538. means son

  539. of salvation.

  540. Now you

  541. couldn't get

  542. anyone further

  543. from the

  544. truth.

  545. Rather than

  546. lead people

  547. to Jesus

  548. his aim

  549. was to

  550. direct people

  551. away from

  552. Jesus.

  553. And that's

  554. what he's

  555. trying to

  556. do to

  557. his boss

  558. Sergius

  559. Paulus.

  560. But Saul

  561. can see

  562. what is

  563. really going

  564. on.

  565. Look at

  566. verse 9.

  567. Then Saul

  568. who was

  569. also called

  570. Paul

  571. filled with

  572. the Holy

  573. Spirit

  574. looked straight

  575. at Elymas

  576. and said

  577. you are

  578. a child

  579. of the

  580. devil

  581. an enemy

  582. of everything

  583. that is

  584. right.

  585. You are

  586. full of

  587. all kinds

  588. of deceit

  589. and trickery.

  590. Will you

  591. never stop

  592. perverting

  593. the right

  594. ways of

  595. the Lord?

  596. real

  597. opposition.

  598. Now what

  599. happened

  600. then

  601. I suggest

  602. still happens

  603. today

  604. as the

  605. church

  606. goes about

  607. her mission.

  608. There are

  609. those who

  610. are in

  611. opposition

  612. to Jesus

  613. and try

  614. to deceive

  615. people about

  616. the truth

  617. of Jesus.

  618. There's a

  619. little magazine

  620. at the back

  621. there called

  622. Church

  623. in Chains.

  624. you pick

  625. that up

  626. and you

  627. can read

  628. about what

  629. it is

  630. in some

  631. countries

  632. for people

  633. who love

  634. Jesus.

  635. Now we

  636. might not

  637. face the

  638. same kind

  639. of pressure

  640. and we

  641. mightn't

  642. meet anybody

  643. called

  644. Elymas

  645. but we

  646. do read

  647. about the

  648. celebrity

  649. atheist

  650. Richard Dawkins

  651. don't we?

  652. Author of

  653. the well-known

  654. book

  655. The God

  656. Delusion.

  657. He has a

  658. lot of

  659. followers

  660. and a lot

  661. of people

  662. listen to

  663. what he

  664. has to

  665. say.

  666. Let me

  667. quote you

  668. what he

  669. says.

  670. Speaking

  671. about

  672. Jesus

  673. he says

  674. somebody

  675. as

  676. intelligent

  677. as

  678. Jesus

  679. would

  680. have

  681. been

  682. an

  683. atheist

  684. if

  685. he

  686. had

  687. known

  688. what

  689. we

  690. know

  691. today.

  692. In other

  693. words

  694. Dawkins

  695. claims

  696. that

  697. science

  698. has

  699. disproved

  700. God

  701. and

  702. we

  703. don't

  704. have

  705. any

  706. need

  707. for

  708. God

  709. today.

  710. To

  711. quote him

  712. again

  713. he says

  714. he

  715. that's

  716. God

  717. is

  718. invented

  719. by

  720. mad

  721. deluded

  722. people.

  723. Maybe

  724. I'm

  725. mad

  726. and

  727. deluded

  728. but I

  729. don't

  730. think

  731. so.

  732. Well

  733. Elimas

  734. like

  735. Dawkins

  736. is a

  737. trickster.

  738. He's a

  739. deceiver.

  740. Dawkins

  741. has actually

  742. been voted

  743. as one of the

  744. three leading

  745. intellectuals

  746. in the world.

  747. I don't

  748. doubt it.

  749. He's a very

  750. very clever

  751. man.

  752. But about

  753. his book

  754. the same

  755. people who

  756. voted for him

  757. and said he's

  758. one of the

  759. greatest

  760. intellectuals

  761. the world

  762. has ever

  763. seen.

  764. about his

  765. book

  766. The God

  767. Delusion

  768. they said

  769. his book

  770. is rambling

  771. and self

  772. contradictory.

  773. The evidence

  774. simply doesn't

  775. weigh up.

  776. You see

  777. like

  778. Elimas

  779. people like

  780. Dawkins

  781. who we

  782. read about

  783. and hear

  784. about

  785. is a

  786. deceiver.

  787. He's

  788. opposed

  789. to Jesus

  790. and he

  791. tries to

  792. turn people

  793. away from

  794. the faith

  795. and many

  796. people are

  797. following

  798. what he

  799. says.

  800. And it

  801. makes you

  802. wonder if

  803. God has

  804. actually

  805. failed in

  806. his

  807. mission

  808. because

  809. atheism

  810. is on

  811. the rise.

  812. Has

  813. God

  814. failed in

  815. his promise

  816. of what

  817. he said

  818. at the

  819. beginning

  820. of Acts?

  821. Is it

  822. really going

  823. to reach

  824. people?

  825. Well

  826. as we

  827. read on

  828. in this

  829. section

  830. here

  831. God

  832. has

  833. not

  834. failed.

  835. He

  836. has

  837. supreme

  838. power

  839. and

  840. authority

  841. over

  842. all

  843. things

  844. and

  845. over

  846. all

  847. people

  848. and

  849. he

  850. will

  851. accomplish

  852. his

  853. mission

  854. salvation

  855. will

  856. come

  857. and

  858. nothing

  859. and

  860. no

  861. one

  862. is

  863. going

  864. to

  865. stop

  866. it.

  867. Look at

  868. what

  869. happens

  870. in

  871. verse

  872. 11.

  873. Now

  874. the hand

  875. of the

  876. Lord

  877. is

  878. against

  879. you

  880. says

  881. Saul

  882. to

  883. Elimus.

  884. You

  885. are

  886. going

  887. to

  888. be

  889. blind

  890. and

  891. for

  892. a

  893. time

  894. you

  895. will

  896. be

  897. unable

  898. to

  899. see

  900. the

  901. light

  902. of

  903. the

  904. sun

  905. not

  906. blind

  907. permanently

  908. but

  909. just

  910. for

  911. a

  912. time

  913. perhaps

  914. for

  915. him

  916. to

  917. come

  918. to

  919. a

  920. realization

  921. of

  922. who

  923. Jesus

  924. is.

  925. Maybe

  926. he

  927. would

  928. turn

  929. in

  930. repentance.

  931. Immediately

  932. mist

  933. and

  934. darkness

  935. came

  936. over

  937. him

  938. and

  939. he

  940. groped

  941. about

  942. seeking

  943. someone

  944. to

  945. lead

  946. him

  947. by

  948. the

  949. hands.

  950. See

  951. Elimus

  952. was one

  953. of these

  954. men

  955. who

  956. went

  957. around

  958. trying

  959. to

  960. claim

  961. to

  962. have

  963. the

  964. truth.

  965. He

  966. is

  967. somebody

  968. who

  969. claims

  970. to

  971. have

  972. the

  973. light.

  974. But

  975. it's

  976. ironic

  977. that

  978. he

  979. is

  980. the

  981. one

  982. who

  983. ends

  984. up

  985. in

  986. darkness.

  987. From

  988. leading

  989. people

  990. away

  991. by

  992. his

  993. trickery

  994. he is

  995. now

  996. a

  997. helpless

  998. man

  999. who

  1000. needs

  1001. somebody

  1002. to

  1003. lead

  1004. him

  1005. by

  1006. the

  1007. hand.

  1008. The

  1009. power

  1010. that

  1011. he

  1012. used

  1013. to

  1014. turn

  1015. people

  1016. away

  1017. from

  1018. God

  1019. well

  1020. it's

  1021. nothing

  1022. when

  1023. he is

  1024. confronted

  1025. with

  1026. the

  1027. real

  1028. power

  1029. of

  1030. God.

  1031. In

  1032. fact

  1033. in

  1034. an

  1035. amazing

  1036. turn

  1037. of

  1038. events

  1039. Elimus

  1040. actually

  1041. becomes

  1042. the

  1043. reason

  1044. for

  1045. the

  1046. proconsul's

  1047. salvation.

  1048. The

  1049. one who

  1050. is in

  1051. opposition

  1052. to

  1053. God

  1054. is

  1055. now

  1056. used

  1057. by

  1058. God

  1059. to

  1060. bring

  1061. salvation

  1062. to

  1063. this

  1064. man.

  1065. Look

  1066. at

  1067. verse

  1068. 12.

  1069. When

  1070. the

  1071. proconsul

  1072. saw

  1073. what

  1074. had

  1075. happened

  1076. he

  1077. believed

  1078. for

  1079. he

  1080. was

  1081. amazed

  1082. at

  1083. the

  1084. teaching

  1085. about

  1086. the

  1087. Lord.

  1088. The

  1089. events

  1090. that

  1091. he

  1092. saw

  1093. that

  1094. day

  1095. of

  1096. what

  1097. happened

  1098. to

  1099. his

  1100. attendant

  1101. his

  1102. secretary

  1103. convinced

  1104. Sergius

  1105. Paulus

  1106. of

  1107. the

  1108. truth.

  1109. But

  1110. read

  1111. verse 12

  1112. carefully.

  1113. What

  1114. truly amazed

  1115. him was

  1116. look at the

  1117. end of

  1118. verse 12

  1119. he believed

  1120. not just

  1121. from what

  1122. he saw

  1123. he believed

  1124. for he was

  1125. amazed

  1126. at the

  1127. teaching

  1128. about

  1129. the

  1130. Lord.

  1131. He

  1132. had

  1133. heard

  1134. the

  1135. good

  1136. news

  1137. of

  1138. Jesus

  1139. remember

  1140. he

  1141. was

  1142. an

  1143. intelligent

  1144. man

  1145. not

  1146. easily

  1147. duped

  1148. he

  1149. had

  1150. asked

  1151. for

  1152. Saul

  1153. and

  1154. Barnabas

  1155. to

  1156. come

  1157. and

  1158. tell

  1159. him

  1160. and

  1161. he

  1162. had

  1163. heard

  1164. for

  1165. himself

  1166. who

  1167. Jesus

  1168. is

  1169. what

  1170. he

  1171. had

  1172. done

  1173. the

  1174. call

  1175. for

  1176. personal

  1177. repentance

  1178. he

  1179. had

  1180. heard

  1181. the

  1182. promise

  1183. of a

  1184. universal

  1185. restoration

  1186. and

  1187. he

  1188. believed

  1189. he

  1190. trusted

  1191. and

  1192. so

  1193. salvation

  1194. came

  1195. to

  1196. this

  1197. man

  1198. you

  1199. see

  1200. despite

  1201. the

  1202. opposition

  1203. we

  1204. face

  1205. God

  1206. will

  1207. accomplish

  1208. his

  1209. mission

  1210. through

  1211. his

  1212. church

  1213. now

  1214. as we

  1215. finish

  1216. I

  1217. would

  1218. like

  1219. us

  1220. all

  1221. here

  1222. to

  1223. try

  1224. and

  1225. identify

  1226. ourselves

  1227. in

  1228. this

  1229. story

  1230. who

  1231. do

  1232. you

  1233. most

  1234. relate

  1235. to

  1236. in

  1237. this

  1238. story

  1239. maybe

  1240. you

  1241. identify

  1242. yourself

  1243. with

  1244. Saul

  1245. he

  1246. was

  1247. a

  1248. follower

  1249. of

  1250. Jesus

  1251. he

  1252. was

  1253. concerned

  1254. to

  1255. tell

  1256. people

  1257. the

  1258. good

  1259. news

  1260. about

  1261. Jesus

  1262. he

  1263. had

  1264. been

  1265. sent

  1266. out

  1267. by

  1268. his

  1269. church

  1270. to

  1271. do

  1272. that

  1273. well

  1274. if

  1275. that's

  1276. you

  1277. then

  1278. I

  1279. encourage

  1280. you

  1281. to

  1282. do

  1283. so

  1284. more

  1285. and

  1286. more

  1287. and

  1288. as

  1289. you

  1290. do

  1291. remember

  1292. there

  1293. will

  1294. be

  1295. people

  1296. who

  1297. will

  1298. be

  1299. in

  1300. opposition

  1301. they

  1302. won't

  1303. want

  1304. to

  1305. hear

  1306. or

  1307. they

  1308. mightn't

  1309. want

  1310. to

  1311. discuss

  1312. but

  1313. our

  1314. job

  1315. is

  1316. simply

  1317. to

  1318. present

  1319. to

  1320. tell

  1321. to

  1322. persuade

  1323. people

  1324. who

  1325. Jesus

  1326. is

  1327. and

  1328. to

  1329. leave

  1330. that

  1331. with

  1332. God

  1333. but

  1334. the

  1335. promise

  1336. here

  1337. is

  1338. that

  1339. God

  1340. will

  1341. bring

  1342. his

  1343. salvation

  1344. whatever

  1345. the

  1346. opposition

  1347. so

  1348. if

  1349. you

  1587. here

  1588. would

  1641. we

  1644. your

  1645. help

  1646. individually

  1647. and

  1648. together

  1649. as

  1650. a

  1651. church

  1652. in

  1653. Jesus

  1654. name

  1655. Amen

  1656. well

  1657. we're

  1658. going to

  1659. sing

  1660. together

  1661. which

  1662. really

  1663. ties

  1664. together

  1665. a lot

  1666. of

  1667. the

  1668. themes

  1669. that

  1670. we've

  1671. been

  1672. thinking

  1676. the

  1677. theme

  1678. of

  1679. the

  1680. universal

  1681. restoration

  1682. and

  1683. this

  1684. song

  1685. is

  1686. really

  1687. looking

  1688. forward

  1689. to

  1690. what

  1691. Christ

  1692. has

  1693. done

  1694. and

  1695. what

  1696. we

  1697. can

  1698. look

  1699. forward

  1700. to

  1701. there

  1702. is

  1703. a

  1704. higher

  1705. throne

  1706. where

  1707. we

  1708. will

  1709. be

  1710. gathered

  1711. which

  1712. is

  1713. the

  1714. new

  1715. creation

  1716. the

  1717. new

  1718. heaven

  1719. with

  1720. him

  1721. if

  1722. you

  1723. trust

  1724. in

  1725. the

  1726. Lord

  1727. this

  1728. is

  1729. a

  1730. song

  1731. that

  1732. you

  1733. will

  1734. want

  1735. to

  1736. sing

  1737. in

  1738. celebration

  1739. of

  1740. what

  1741. we

  1742. have

  1743. so

  1744. let's

  1745. stand

  1746. together

  1747. as

  1748. we

  1749. sing
