  1. They could come up. We're going to read nearly all the chapter. It's quite long, but it's a very important one.

  2. So we're going to read verses 1 to 35.

  3. So if you just give the page numbers and so forth.

  4. We're on page 1110 in the Church Bibles.

  5. Acts chapter 15, page 1110.

    Acts 15 chapter mention

  6. Some men came down from Judea to Antioch and were teaching the brothers,

  7. unless you are circumcised according to the custom taught by Moses, you cannot be saved.

  8. This brought Paul and Barnabas into sharp dispute and debate with them.

  9. So Paul and Barnabas were appointed, along with some other believers, to go up to Jerusalem

  10. to see the apostles and elders about this question.

  11. The Church sent them on their way, and as they traveled through Phoenicia and Samaria,

  12. they told how the Gentiles had been converted.

  13. This news made all the brothers very glad.

  14. When they came to Jerusalem, they were welcomed by the Church and the apostles and elders,

  15. to whom they reported everything God had done through them.

  16. Then some of the believers, who belonged to the party of the Pharisees,

  17. stood up and said,

  18. The Gentiles must be circumcised and required to obey the law of Moses.

  19. The apostles and elders met to consider this question.

  20. After much discussion, Peter got up and addressed them.

  21. Brothers, you know that some time ago God made a choice among you that the Gentiles might hear

  22. from my lips the message of the gospel and believe.

  23. God, who knows the heart, showed that he accepted them by giving the Holy Spirit to them,

  24. just as he did to us.

  25. He made no distinction between us and them, for he purified their hearts by faith.

  26. Now then, why do you try to test God by putting on the necks of the disciples

  27. a yoke that neither we nor our fathers have been able to bear?

  28. No, we believe it is through the grace of our Lord Jesus that we are saved, just as they are.

  29. The whole assembly became silent as they listened to Barnabas and Paul

  30. telling about the miraculous signs and wonders God had done among the Gentiles through them.

  31. When they finished, James spoke up.

  32. Brothers, listen to me.

  33. Simon has described to us how God at first showed his concern

  34. by taking from the Gentiles a people for himself.

  35. The words of the prophets are in agreement with this, as it is written.

  36. After this, I will return and rebuild David's fallen tent.

  37. Its ruins I will rebuild and I will restore it that the remnant of men may seek the Lord

  38. and all the Gentiles who bear my name, says the Lord, who does these things

  39. that have been known for the ages.

  40. It is my judgment, therefore, that we should not make it difficult for the Gentiles who are turning to God.

  41. Instead, we should write to them, telling them to abstain from food polluted by idols,

  42. from sexual immorality, from the meat of strangled animals, and from blood.

  43. For Moses has been preached in every city from the earliest times

  44. and is read in the synagogues on every Sabbath.

  45. Then the apostles and elders with the whole church decided to choose some of their own men

  46. and send them to Antioch with Paul and Barnabas.

  47. They chose Judas, called Barsabbas, and Silas, two men who were leaders among the brothers.

  48. With them they sent the following letter,

  49. The apostles and elders, your brothers, to the Gentile believers in Antioch, Syria, and Cilicia.

  50. We have heard that some went out from us without our authorization and disturbed you,

  51. troubling your minds by what they said.

  52. So we all agreed to choose some men and send them to you with our dear friends Barnabas and Paul,

  53. men who have risked their lives for the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

  54. Therefore, we are sending Judas and Silas to confirm by word of mouth that we are writing.

  55. It seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to us not to burden you with anything beyond the following requirements.

  56. You are to abstain from food sacrificed to idols, from blood, from the meat of strangled animals,

  57. and from sexual immorality.

  58. You will do well to avoid these things.

  59. Farewell.

  60. The men were sent off and went down to Antioch,

  61. where they gathered the church together and delivered the letter.

  62. The people read it and were glad for its encouraging message.

  63. Judas and Silas, who themselves were prophets,

  64. said much to encourage and strengthen the brothers.

  65. After spending some time there,

  66. they were sent off by the brothers

  67. with the blessing of peace to return to those who had sent them.

  68. But Paul and Barnabas remained in Antioch,

  69. where they and many others taught and preached the word of the Lord.

  70. Well,

  71. we come to a section in Acts that is,

  72. I would say, and commentators all say it too,

  73. that it's the most pivotal point in all of church history.

  74. You might be into church history,

  75. but this has defined the church throughout all times and ages.

  76. It's a critical, critical issue,

  77. this council at Jerusalem,

  78. this meeting that took place.

  79. So we need to pay close attention to it.

  80. And what we look at this morning,

  81. everything that we do on a Sunday morning

  82. is important,

  83. and all the messages that we look at together

  84. are really important.

  85. But I want to say that this

  86. is the most critical.

  87. Because if we get this wrong,

  88. then everything else falls apart.

  89. It's foundational.

  90. So we need close attention

  91. to God's word.

  92. So let's pray for that this morning.

  93. Let's pray.

  94. Our Father God,

  95. we come to you.

  96. We humble ourselves before you.

  97. Because we want to learn from you.

  98. we want you to teach us

  99. and to show us

  100. how we should live

  101. as your people

  102. in your church.

  103. And Father,

  104. we pray that we would take

  105. what we look at together

  106. with the utmost seriousness.

  107. and that you would pour out

  108. the power of your Holy Spirit

  109. upon us all.

  110. That we may be able to apply

  111. and work it out

  112. and see it filter

  113. into our own lives personally

  114. and together as a church.

  115. That we would make

  116. the necessary changes

  117. that we need to.

  118. and that above all

  119. we would be people

  120. transformed

  121. by your grace.

  122. May what was impacting

  123. all those years ago

  124. have that same impact

  125. upon us today

  126. and upon your church.

  127. And we pray for your help

  128. in doing this.

  129. For we need it.

  130. Amen.

  131. On Saturday mornings

  132. one of the things I do

  133. is to coach rugby

  134. with a bunch of

  135. younger kids.

  136. And before we start

  137. our training sessions

  138. I always hold up the ball

  139. in the middle of them

  140. and I ask this question

  141. with the ball held up high.

  142. What's the most important

  143. thing in rugby?

  144. And then they all have to

  145. try and guess what it is.

  146. Otherwise they get

  147. press ups to do.

  148. And they all go one by one.

  149. Is it passing?

  150. No.

  151. Is it tackling?

  152. No.

  153. Is it kicking?

  154. No.

  155. It's the ball.

  156. The most important thing

  157. in rugby is the ball.

  158. If you lose the ball

  159. you can't win.

  160. It's critical

  161. that we hold on to the ball.

  162. Otherwise we might as well

  163. go home

  164. and do some skipping

  165. with the girls.

  166. Well the girls do play rugby.

  167. It's okay.

  168. Don't worry.

  169. Girls do play rugby.

  170. My daughter does.

  171. We just don't do skipping.

  172. You know what I mean.

  173. But that's

  174. what's most important.

  175. It's the ball.

  176. Now what's the most

  177. important thing

  178. in the church?

  179. The answer of course is

  180. it's the gospel.

  181. If you lose the gospel

  182. you've lost everything.

  183. It's not the music.

  184. It's not our particular

  185. brand of theology.

  186. It's not the building.

  187. It's the gospel.

  188. It's critical.

  189. It's vital

  190. that as a church

  191. we hold on to the gospel

  192. otherwise the church

  193. is going to die.

  194. And that's the issue

  195. for every single church

  196. and it's at the heart

  197. of the issue here

  198. in chapter 15.

  199. Look at chapter 15

  200. verse 1.

  201. Some men

  202. came down

  203. from Judea

  204. that is they were

  205. coming down

  206. from the church

  207. in Jerusalem

  208. down to the church

  209. in Antioch

  210. and were teaching

  211. the brothers

  212. and the sisters

  213. listen guys

  214. listen to this

  215. unless you are

  216. circumcised

  217. according to the customs

  218. taught by Moses

  219. you can't be saved.

  220. You all think

  221. you're Christians

  222. well actually

  223. you're not.

  224. And the message

  225. that you're telling

  226. to everybody else

  227. this message of grace

  228. well that ain't going

  229. to save anybody else either.

  230. You've got it wrong.

  231. Verse 2

  232. This brought Paul

  233. and Barnabas

  234. into sharp dispute

  235. and debate

  236. with them.

  237. Literally

  238. a conflict

  239. a fight

  240. started within the church.

  241. We're always saying

  242. we shouldn't fight

  243. in the church.

  244. Sometimes

  245. it's important

  246. to fight.

  247. There was a conflict

  248. and there was a big issue

  249. at stake.

  250. But let's be clear

  251. this is not a disagreement

  252. over spiritual gifts

  253. or worship styles.

  254. This was of critical importance

  255. because the outcome

  256. of this debate

  257. has the potential

  258. to distort

  259. the gospel

  260. which will in turn

  261. disrupt

  262. the mission

  263. which will in turn

  264. destroy

  265. the church.

  266. If you lose

  267. the gospel

  268. you've lost

  269. everything

  270. we might as well

  271. go home.

  272. And it's such a defining issue

  273. look at the rest

  274. of verse 2

  275. that Paul and Barnabas

  276. were appointed

  277. along with some of the

  278. other believers

  279. to go up to the church

  280. in Jerusalem

  281. to see the apostles

  282. and the elders

  283. about this question.

  284. Verse 4

  285. When they came to Jerusalem

  286. they were welcomed

  287. by the church

  288. and the apostles

  289. and the elders

  290. to whom they reported

  291. everything

  292. that God had been doing

  293. through them.

  294. That's through

  295. the Gentiles

  296. where they had been reaching.

  297. So as we travel

  298. with Paul and Barnabas

  299. and we want to go

  300. with them

  301. as they go up

  302. from Antioch

  303. to confront

  304. the Jerusalem church

  305. we're going to look

  306. at three things.

  307. Challenges to a

  308. gospel centred church

  309. maintaining a

  310. gospel centred church

  311. and living

  312. as a gospel centred church.

  313. These are three things

  314. that I think come

  315. from the passage.

  316. First

  317. the challenges

  318. to a gospel centred church.

  319. Surprisingly

  320. the challenge

  321. to the church

  322. comes from

  323. inside

  324. the church

  325. not from outside.

  326. Often

  327. the greatest issues

  328. come from inside

  329. not from outside

  330. as was the case here.

  331. Verse 5

  332. Some of the believers

  333. who belonged

  334. to the party

  335. of the Pharisees

  336. stood up

  337. and said

  338. the Gentiles

  339. Gentiles

  340. must be circumcised

  341. and required

  342. to obey

  343. the law of Moses.

  344. A Gentile

  345. was anybody

  346. who wasn't a Jew.

  347. So if you're not a Jew

  348. or of Jewish extraction

  349. you're a Gentile.

  350. It's everybody else

  351. who isn't a Jew.

  352. And they were imposing

  353. things upon them.

  354. clearly these people

  355. they're told

  356. in verse 5

  357. they were believers

  358. they had heard

  359. the gospel

  360. they had become

  361. followers of Jesus Christ

  362. but now they were

  363. beginning to add

  364. to the gospel.

  365. We might call them

  366. the Jesus plus gang.

  367. Their basic message

  368. was

  369. Jesus is not enough.

  370. Jesus gets you

  371. started

  372. but you need

  373. someone else

  374. or something else

  375. to get you

  376. over the line.

  377. for them

  378. and the Jewish

  379. tradition

  380. was that

  381. circumcision

  382. was the outward

  383. sign

  384. that you were

  385. part of God's

  386. community.

  387. It was a mark

  388. of identity.

  389. But they've now

  390. turned this

  391. outward sign

  392. into

  393. actual salvation.

  394. So if you have

  395. the sign

  396. well then you

  397. are saved.

  398. the equivalent

  399. for us today

  400. might be

  401. baptism.

  402. It's an outward

  403. sign that you're

  404. part of God's

  405. family.

  406. It's a mark

  407. of identity.

  408. But we could

  409. easily turn that

  410. sign

  411. into

  412. salvation.

  413. But that would

  414. be gospel plus

  415. that's

  416. the Jesus plus

  417. gang message

  418. where we're saying

  419. grace is not

  420. sufficient

  421. we need

  422. something more.

  423. But I think

  424. we've kind of

  425. looked at those

  426. issues before

  427. haven't we?

  428. So what are

  429. some of the

  430. challenges

  431. to the gospel

  432. that we face

  433. in this church

  434. today?

  435. Well you might

  436. come up with

  437. your own and I'd

  438. be very interested

  439. to hear what

  440. they are but

  441. here's one that

  442. I think of.

  443. It goes something

  444. like this.

  445. We believe

  446. that the gospel

  447. saves us

  448. but once we're

  449. in

  450. we've got to

  451. keep ourselves

  452. in.

  453. So Jesus

  454. gets us

  455. in

  456. but then

  457. it's up to

  458. us to

  459. keep ourselves

  460. in.

  461. I want to

  462. quote to you

  463. from a book

  464. written by

  465. a guy called

  466. Tullian

  467. Chavidian

  468. and I'm

  469. quoting it

  470. not just

  471. because it's

  472. a helpful

  473. quote but

  474. I'm recommending

  475. it to you

  476. as a great

  477. book to read

  478. on the gospel.

  479. It's called

  480. Jesus plus

  481. nothing

  482. equals

  483. everything.

  484. Jesus plus

  485. nothing

  486. equals

  487. everything.

  488. And this is

  489. what he says

  490. talking about

  491. our salvation.

  492. Most believers

  493. realise we

  494. can never

  495. earn our

  496. salvation.

  497. We've come

  498. to accept that

  499. no one can

  500. work their

  501. way into

  502. God's kingdom.

  503. We know

  504. that and

  505. most of us

  506. who read the

  507. Bible believe

  508. that to be

  509. true and I

  510. take it that's

  511. exactly how we're

  512. thinking this

  513. morning.

  514. But when it

  515. comes to our

  516. sanctification

  517. that means to

  518. become like

  519. Jesus

  520. suddenly we

  521. become legalists

  522. in the matter

  523. of maturing in

  524. Christ likeness

  525. and in

  526. continuing to

  527. please God

  528. and find favour

  529. with God

  530. and acceptance

  531. with God

  532. we suppose

  533. it's all about

  534. what we have

  535. to accomplish

  536. and adhere

  537. to all the

  538. rules and

  539. standards and

  540. values that we

  541. need to follow.

  542. we get the

  543. Christian life

  544. all backwards.

  545. It subtly

  546. becomes all

  547. about us

  548. and what we

  549. have to do

  550. which leads

  551. to slavery

  552. instead of

  553. being all

  554. about Jesus

  555. and what

  556. he's done

  557. which leads

  558. to liberty

  559. or freedom.

  560. You see

  561. theologically

  562. we say

  563. yes it's

  564. all about

  565. Jesus

  566. but practically

  567. we live

  568. as if

  569. it's all

  570. about me.

  571. Jesus'

  572. performance

  573. well that

  574. gets me

  575. into the

  576. club

  577. but it's

  578. my performance

  579. that keeps

  580. me in there.

  581. But it's

  582. not about

  583. us.

  584. It's never

  585. about us.

  586. The reality

  587. is the only

  588. thing that we

  589. bring to the

  590. table as far

  591. as our salvation

  592. goes is

  593. our failures

  594. and our mess

  595. ups.

  596. That's all we

  597. bring to the

  598. equation.

  599. the true

  600. gospel

  601. the pure

  602. gospel

  603. is not

  604. about how

  605. good I

  606. am today

  607. or how

  608. much better

  609. I am

  610. next week

  611. than last

  612. week.

  613. It's all

  614. about Jesus.

  615. And there's

  616. a quote

  617. here.

  618. It's all

  619. about Jesus

  620. who has

  621. taken the

  622. judgment

  623. that I

  624. deserve

  625. today

  626. and tomorrow

  627. for my

  628. sin

  629. so that I

  630. am forever

  631. treated and

  632. treasured

  633. today and

  634. tomorrow

  635. as God's

  636. son.

  637. that's

  638. what it's

  639. all about.

  640. You see

  641. it's not

  642. just a

  643. Jerusalem

  644. problem

  645. with these

  646. guys coming

  647. along with

  648. their Jesus

  649. plus issue.

  650. It's actually

  651. a carigoline

  652. problem.

  653. And why

  654. would I be

  655. so rude

  656. to suggest

  657. that?

  658. Well as

  659. one writer

  660. put it

  661. because it's

  662. the default

  663. setting of

  664. every human

  665. heart.

  666. We've all

  667. got a

  668. parasaic

  669. heart.

  670. All of

  671. us.

  672. And we

  673. need to

  674. be careful

  675. that we

  676. don't slip

  677. down that

  678. path.

  679. And there's

  680. two ways

  681. and this

  682. is by

  683. application

  684. there are

  685. two ways

  686. that we

  687. can tell

  688. if we

  689. are adding

  690. to the

  691. gospel

  692. if we've

  693. become a

  694. part of

  695. the Jesus

  696. plus gang.

  697. The first

  698. is this

  699. it's

  700. legalism.

  701. We know

  702. we're adding

  703. to the

  704. gospel

  705. when we've

  706. got a

  707. little

  708. checklist

  709. about

  710. things we

  711. can do

  712. and we

  713. can't

  714. do.

  715. And it

  716. becomes the

  717. standard by

  718. which we

  719. judge our

  720. acceptance with

  721. God.

  722. So we

  723. take out

  724. the list

  725. I check

  726. it off

  727. and I

  728. make sure

  729. well I've

  730. ticked this

  731. I've

  732. ticked this

  733. I've

  734. ticked this

  735. I'm

  736. okay.

  737. But if

  738. I don't

  739. meet these

  740. standards

  741. if I

  742. find a

  743. box is

  744. not

  745. ticked

  746. then I'm

  747. out of

  748. favour with

  749. God and

  750. I have

  751. to kind

  752. of work

  753. myself back

  754. into it

  755. again.

  756. But not

  757. only do we

  758. do that

  759. to ourselves

  760. we also

  761. begin to

  762. apply

  763. these same

  764. checklists

  765. to everybody

  766. else around

  767. us.

  768. So when

  769. people don't

  770. meet my

  771. standard we

  772. begin to

  773. question

  774. are they

  775. really a

  776. Christian?

  777. I mean if

  778. they were

  779. really a

  780. Christian they

  781. wouldn't have

  782. done that

  783. and they

  784. certainly

  785. wouldn't have

  786. said that.

  787. Which leads

  788. to the

  789. second

  790. which is

  791. superiority.

  792. Once

  793. people don't

  794. match up to

  795. our checklists

  796. we become

  797. critical and

  798. judgmental.

  799. We begin to

  800. look down on

  801. people and we

  802. begin to pick

  803. out all their

  804. faults and their

  805. failures while

  806. at the same

  807. time we give

  808. ourselves a

  809. little pat on

  810. the back and

  811. I think well

  812. aren't I glad

  813. that I'm like

  814. them because if

  815. I was in

  816. their shoes I

  817. never would

  818. have done

  819. that.

  820. We become

  821. experts in

  822. seeing the

  823. speck in

  824. somebody else's

  825. eye but we

  826. can't see the

  827. tree or perhaps

  828. the forest growing

  829. out of our own

  830. eye.

  831. So let me ask

  832. us all have

  833. we brought a

  834. checklist with

  835. us this

  836. morning.

  837. Do we

  838. mentally kind

  839. of look

  840. around and

  841. kind of tick

  842. off and

  843. think I'm

  844. doing this

  845. they're not

  846. doing that.

  847. Do we bring

  848. our checklist

  849. with us through

  850. the week?

  851. Well if we

  852. have a

  853. checklist if you

  854. have a

  855. checklist take

  856. it out right

  857. now and

  858. mentally rip

  859. it up burn

  860. it stamp on

  861. it tread it

  862. tread on it

  863. and get rid

  864. of it and

  865. grab a hold

  866. of the gospel

  867. with two

  868. hands.

  869. Legalism and

  870. superiority are

  871. a lethal

  872. combination and

  873. together they

  874. distort the

  875. gospel they

  876. disrupt God's

  877. mission and

  878. they destroy

  879. the church.

  880. that's the

  881. big issue

  882. that was

  883. going on

  884. that's why

  885. it was such

  886. a defining

  887. issue and

  888. that's why

  889. Paul was so

  890. anxious to

  891. get to

  892. Jerusalem and

  893. to sort it

  894. all out.

  895. So those are

  896. challenges that

  897. perhaps we face

  898. to the gospel.

  899. What about

  900. then maintaining

  901. a gospel

  902. centre church?

  903. Well if the

  904. gospel is to

  905. be central in

  906. the church

  907. then grace

  908. is to be

  909. central to

  910. the gospel.

  911. In other

  912. words if we're

  913. going to

  914. maintain a

  915. gospel centre

  916. church we

  917. need to

  918. understand that

  919. God includes

  920. us by grace

  921. and he saves

  922. us by grace.

  923. It's all about

  924. grace.

  925. That's what we've

  926. been singing

  927. about and

  928. thinking about

  929. this morning.

  930. So first we're

  931. included by grace.

  932. Verse 6

  933. The apostles

  934. and the elders

  935. met to

  936. consider this

  937. question.

  938. The question

  939. that we saw

  940. in verse 50

  941. in verse 5

  942. that the Gentiles

  943. must be

  944. circumcised to

  945. be included

  946. or to be

  947. accepted to

  948. be saved.

  949. Verse 7

  950. After much

  951. discussion Peter

  952. who was one of

  953. the leaders in

  954. the church got

  955. up and he

  956. addressed them

  957. Brothers and

  958. sisters you

  959. know that

  960. some time ago

  961. God made a

  962. choice among

  963. you that the

  964. Gentiles might

  965. hear from my

  966. lips the

  967. message of

  968. the gospel

  969. and believe.

  970. And what

  971. Peter here is

  972. doing is he's

  973. reminding us of

  974. his earlier

  975. visit to a

  976. guy called

  977. Cornelius.

  978. You might

  979. remember him.

  980. Go back to

  981. chapter 10.

  982. Keep your

  983. finger in

  984. chapter 15

  985. and go back

  986. to chapter 10

  987. and we'll just

  988. refresh ourselves

  989. about this guy

  990. Cornelius.

  991. He's a Gentile.

  992. He's not a

  993. Jew so he'd

  994. be kind of

  995. considered an

  996. outsider.

  997. Somebody who

  998. wouldn't be

  999. included.

  1000. But nonetheless

  1001. this Gentile

  1002. this outsider

  1003. he receives a

  1004. vision from

  1005. God and this

  1006. is what

  1007. happened in

  1008. the vision.

  1009. Verse 5

  1010. of chapter 10

  1011. The angel

  1012. says to him

  1013. in the vision

  1014. Now send

  1015. men to

  1016. Joppa

  1017. to bring

  1018. back a

  1019. man named

  1020. Simon who

  1021. is called

  1022. Peter.

  1023. He is

  1024. staying with

  1025. Simon the

  1026. tanner whose

  1027. house is by

  1028. the sea.

  1029. So that's

  1030. his message.

  1031. Meanwhile

  1032. Peter also

  1033. has a vision

  1034. from God

  1035. which is all

  1036. about accepting

  1037. people as

  1038. God accepts

  1039. people.

  1040. Verse 19

  1041. While Peter

  1042. was still

  1043. thinking about

  1044. the vision

  1045. the spirit

  1046. said to him

  1047. Simon three

  1048. men are

  1049. looking for

  1050. you.

  1051. So get

  1052. up go

  1053. downstairs do

  1054. not hesitate

  1055. to go with

  1056. them for I

  1057. have sent

  1058. them.

  1059. So now

  1060. Cornelius has

  1061. the message

  1062. Peter has

  1063. the message

  1064. now they

  1065. have to

  1066. meet each

  1067. other.

  1068. Verse 33

  1069. Cornelius

  1070. speaks to

  1071. Peter he

  1072. says so I

  1073. sent for you

  1074. immediately and

  1075. it was good

  1076. of you to

  1077. come.

  1078. Now we

  1079. are all

  1080. here in

  1081. the presence

  1082. of God

  1083. to listen

  1084. to everything

  1085. the Lord

  1086. has commanded

  1087. you to tell

  1088. us.

  1089. Then Peter

  1090. began to

  1091. speak.

  1092. I now

  1093. realise how

  1094. true it

  1095. is that

  1096. God does

  1097. not show

  1098. favouritism.

  1099. God doesn't

  1100. suffer with

  1101. what Phil

  1102. Hogan does

  1103. obviously.

  1104. I do not

  1105. show favouritism

  1106. but accepts

  1107. people from

  1108. every nation

  1109. who fear

  1110. him and do

  1111. what is

  1112. right.

  1113. You know

  1114. the message

  1115. God sent to

  1116. the people

  1117. of Israel

  1118. telling the

  1119. good news

  1120. of peace

  1121. through Jesus

  1122. Christ who

  1123. is Lord

  1124. of all.

  1125. Verse 44

  1126. While Peter

  1127. was still

  1128. speaking these

  1129. words the

  1130. Holy Spirit

  1131. came on

  1132. all who

  1133. heard the

  1134. message.

  1135. Now go

  1136. back to

  1137. chapter 15.

  1138. You see

  1139. Peter is

  1140. using,

  1141. he's recounting

  1142. this meeting

  1143. he had with

  1144. Cornelius to

  1145. prove to the

  1146. rest of them

  1147. that God

  1148. does include

  1149. people,

  1150. not on the

  1151. basis of

  1152. their race

  1153. or religion

  1154. or on their

  1155. culture or

  1156. their colour,

  1157. what class

  1158. they come

  1159. from,

  1160. whether they're

  1161. travellers or

  1162. whether they're

  1163. settled people.

  1164. He includes

  1165. people because

  1166. of his

  1167. grace.

  1168. There is no

  1169. favouritism.

  1170. Chapter 15

  1171. verse 8

  1172. God who knows

  1173. the heart

  1174. shows that he

  1175. accepted them

  1176. by giving

  1177. the Holy

  1178. Spirit to

  1179. them just

  1180. as he

  1181. did to

  1182. us.

  1183. You see

  1184. who are

  1185. we to be

  1186. people who

  1187. exclude

  1188. others whom

  1189. God has

  1190. included?

  1191. The question

  1192. we should be

  1193. asking is not

  1194. do they speak

  1195. the same

  1196. language or

  1197. do they come

  1198. from the same

  1199. theological pool

  1200. as we do

  1201. or do they

  1202. practice the

  1203. same traditions

  1204. as we do?

  1205. No, if God

  1206. has given them

  1207. the Holy

  1208. Spirit then

  1209. who are we

  1210. to exclude

  1211. other people?

  1212. Which is

  1213. exactly the

  1214. same point as

  1215. James the

  1216. other leader

  1217. in the church

  1218. was making

  1219. in verse 15.

  1220. He goes

  1221. straight back

  1222. to scripture

  1223. to remind us.

  1224. He says look

  1225. verse 15

  1226. the words of

  1227. the prophets

  1228. are in

  1229. agreement with

  1230. this as it

  1231. is written

  1232. after this

  1233. this is from

  1234. Amos

  1235. after this I

  1236. will return

  1237. and rebuild

  1238. David's fallen

  1239. tent his

  1240. dynasty his

  1241. family its

  1242. ruins I

  1243. will rebuild

  1244. and I

  1245. will restore

  1246. it that the

  1247. remnant of

  1248. men may

  1249. seek the

  1250. Lord and

  1251. all the

  1252. Gentiles all

  1253. those outside

  1254. of the Jews

  1255. who bear

  1256. my name.

  1257. God's plan

  1258. was to be

  1259. inclusive in

  1260. his salvation

  1261. to include

  1262. all the

  1263. nations.

  1264. He shows

  1265. no favoritism.

  1266. He accepts

  1267. all people

  1268. from all

  1269. nations.

  1270. He does

  1271. not show

  1272. favoritism.

  1273. But we're

  1274. not only

  1275. included by

  1276. grace

  1277. second we

  1278. are saved

  1279. by grace.

  1280. Verse 9

  1281. He made

  1282. no distinction

  1283. between us

  1284. and them

  1285. for he

  1286. purified their

  1287. hearts

  1288. by faith.

  1289. You see

  1290. God doesn't

  1291. have one way

  1292. of saving

  1293. a Jew

  1294. and then

  1295. another way

  1296. of saving

  1297. a Gentile

  1298. or saving

  1299. you one way

  1300. and saving

  1301. me another

  1302. way.

  1303. The gospel

  1304. is not

  1305. get yourself

  1306. clean and

  1307. then come

  1308. to Christ.

  1309. It's come

  1310. to Christ

  1311. look at the

  1312. end of verse

  1313. 9 and by

  1314. faith he

  1315. will purify

  1316. you he will

  1317. clean you.

  1318. We come to

  1319. Christ with

  1320. our mess with

  1321. our failures and

  1322. he cleans

  1323. us.

  1324. that's how

  1325. God saves

  1326. us and

  1327. it's exactly

  1328. the same

  1329. for all

  1330. of us.

  1331. Verse 10

  1332. So then

  1333. why do you

  1334. try to

  1335. test God

  1336. by putting

  1337. on the

  1338. necks of

  1339. the disciples

  1340. a yoke

  1341. that neither

  1342. we nor

  1343. our fathers

  1344. have been

  1345. able to

  1346. bear?

  1347. He's getting

  1348. annoyed.

  1349. Why are you

  1350. insisting on

  1351. adding to

  1352. the gospel?

  1353. Why are you

  1354. running around

  1355. the place

  1356. on a Sunday

  1357. morning and

  1358. throughout the

  1359. week with

  1360. your little

  1361. checklist

  1362. making sure

  1363. that everybody

  1364. meets your

  1365. standards?

  1366. Why don't

  1367. you just

  1368. look at

  1369. your own

  1370. life?

  1371. You can't

  1372. even meet

  1373. your own

  1374. standards so

  1375. why are you

  1376. trying to

  1377. get everybody

  1378. else to

  1379. keep it?

  1380. Verse 11

  1381. No

  1382. we believe

  1383. it is

  1384. through the

  1385. grace of

  1386. our Lord

  1387. Jesus that

  1388. we are

  1389. saved just

  1390. as they

  1391. are.

  1392. The only

  1393. contribution

  1394. that we all

  1395. make to

  1396. our salvation

  1397. and to

  1398. our sanctification

  1399. is our

  1400. sin.

  1401. God in

  1402. his abundant

  1403. grace takes

  1404. our sin

  1405. on himself.

  1406. He accepts

  1407. us and

  1408. he purifies

  1409. us.

  1410. Grace is

  1411. not about

  1412. what we

  1413. do.

  1414. It's all

  1415. about what

  1416. God has

  1417. already done

  1418. for us

  1419. in Christ.

  1420. Again it's

  1421. what James

  1422. is saying

  1423. in verse

  1424. 19.

  1425. His

  1426. concluding

  1427. comments

  1428. it is my

  1429. judgment

  1430. therefore that

  1431. we should

  1432. not make

  1433. it difficult

  1434. for the

  1435. Gentiles who

  1436. are turning

  1437. to God.

  1438. Stop

  1439. putting

  1440. hurdles

  1441. in the

  1442. way.

  1443. God

  1444. does not

  1445. ask us to

  1446. have all

  1447. our theology

  1448. all sorted

  1449. before we

  1450. come to

  1451. Christ.

  1452. He doesn't

  1453. demand that

  1454. we're free

  1455. of our

  1456. sinful habits

  1457. when he

  1458. purifies us.

  1459. He doesn't

  1460. insist that

  1461. our lives

  1462. are immediately

  1463. all sorted

  1464. after he

  1465. accepts us.

  1466. All of

  1467. those things

  1468. are important

  1469. but it

  1470. takes time

  1471. and he

  1472. will be

  1473. patient

  1474. with his

  1475. grace.

  1476. So we

  1477. shouldn't

  1478. put those

  1479. demands

  1480. and insisting

  1481. on other

  1482. people.

  1483. You see

  1484. if we

  1485. take grace

  1486. out of the

  1487. gospel,

  1488. if we

  1489. remove grace

  1490. from the

  1491. gospel,

  1492. it leads

  1493. to a

  1494. church that

  1495. becomes

  1496. critical,

  1497. judgmental,

  1498. and

  1499. superior.

  1500. And that's

  1501. why Peter

  1502. and James

  1503. and the

  1504. leaders were

  1505. adamant that

  1506. the rest of

  1507. the people

  1508. who had

  1509. gone offline

  1510. understood

  1511. what grace

  1512. was really

  1513. all about.

  1514. so those

  1515. are

  1516. challenges

  1517. to the

  1518. gospel,

  1519. how we

  1520. maintain

  1521. the

  1522. gospel.

  1523. Third,

  1524. living as a

  1525. gospel-centered

  1526. church.

  1527. You see,

  1528. when we have

  1529. understood the

  1530. gospel,

  1531. when we've

  1532. experienced

  1533. grace in

  1534. our lives,

  1535. then it

  1536. radically

  1537. changes the

  1538. life of

  1539. the church.

  1540. Verse 19,

  1541. James is

  1542. speaking,

  1543. his summing

  1544. up of the

  1545. whole meeting.

  1546. It's my

  1547. judgment,

  1548. therefore,

  1549. that we

  1550. should not

  1551. make it

  1552. difficult for

  1553. the Gentiles

  1554. who are

  1555. turning to

  1556. God.

  1557. Instead,

  1558. we should

  1559. write to

  1560. them,

  1561. telling them

  1562. to abstain

  1563. from food

  1564. polluted by

  1565. idols,

  1566. from sexual

  1567. immorality,

  1568. from the

  1569. meat of

  1570. strangled

  1571. animals,

  1572. and from

  1573. blood.

  1574. Whoa,

  1575. where's

  1576. that come

  1577. from?

  1578. I mean,

  1579. it seems

  1580. strange to

  1581. us,

  1582. and it

  1583. almost seems

  1584. as if

  1585. James is

  1586. contradicting

  1587. everything that

  1588. has already

  1589. been said.

  1590. It's like

  1591. he's going

  1592. back to

  1593. the rules

  1594. again.

  1595. No,

  1596. he's not

  1597. turning his

  1598. back on

  1599. grace at

  1600. all.

  1601. James is

  1602. concerned that

  1603. the whole

  1604. church stays

  1605. united by

  1606. living out

  1607. the gospel

  1608. of grace

  1609. within the

  1610. community of

  1611. the church.

  1612. Verse 21,

  1613. he says,

  1614. for Moses

  1615. has been

  1616. preached in

  1617. every city

  1618. from the

  1619. earliest times

  1620. and is

  1621. read in

  1622. the synagogues

  1623. on every

  1624. Sabbath.

  1625. It's like

  1626. he's saying

  1627. this,

  1628. let me

  1629. kind of

  1630. try and

  1631. paraphrase

  1632. it.

  1633. He's

  1634. saying,

  1635. look,

  1636. as you

  1637. guys go

  1638. and preach

  1639. the gospel,

  1640. as you

  1641. go from

  1642. town to

  1643. town,

  1644. you're

  1645. going to

  1646. meet people

  1647. who are

  1648. steeped in

  1649. tradition.

  1650. You're

  1651. going to

  1652. meet people

  1653. who've had

  1654. Moses preach

  1655. to them

  1656. Sunday

  1657. after Sunday,

  1658. year after

  1659. year,

  1660. tradition,

  1661. tradition,

  1662. tradition.

  1663. So don't

  1664. be surprised

  1665. that when you

  1666. bring the

  1667. gospel to

  1668. them,

  1669. this message

  1670. of grace

  1671. and freedom,

  1672. that they

  1673. don't leave

  1674. everything behind

  1675. straight away.

  1676. It's going

  1677. to take

  1678. time for

  1679. grace to

  1680. filter into

  1681. every area

  1682. of their

  1683. life.

  1684. You

  1685. didn't

  1686. get it

  1687. right,

  1688. so don't

  1689. be expecting

  1690. everybody

  1691. else to

  1692. get it

  1693. right

  1694. straight

  1695. away.

  1696. But you

  1697. know what,

  1698. there's

  1699. something we

  1700. should do,

  1701. he says.

  1702. Make sure

  1703. we don't

  1704. go offending

  1705. anyone by

  1706. the freedom

  1707. we have

  1708. from God's

  1709. grace.

  1710. And that's

  1711. why he

  1712. says to

  1713. them in

  1714. verse 20,

  1715. we should

  1716. write a

  1717. letter to

  1718. them telling

  1719. them to

  1720. abstain from

  1721. food polluted

  1722. by idols,

  1723. from sexual

  1724. immorality,

  1725. from the

  1726. meat of

  1727. strangled

  1728. animals,

  1729. and from

  1730. blood.

  1731. Now again,

  1732. let me give

  1733. you some

  1734. background to

  1735. all of

  1736. this.

  1737. As a

  1738. Gentile,

  1739. if you

  1740. wanted to

  1741. buy your

  1742. Sunday

  1743. lunch,

  1744. you wanted

  1745. a nice

  1746. roast on

  1747. Sunday,

  1748. the best

  1749. place if

  1750. you were a

  1751. Gentile in

  1752. the first

  1753. century was

  1754. to go down

  1755. to the

  1756. local market,

  1757. which was

  1758. usually located

  1759. outside the

  1760. pagan temple,

  1761. a bit like

  1762. going to the

  1763. farmer's

  1764. market out

  1765. side Mahan

  1766. Point,

  1767. the big

  1768. temple,

  1769. farmer's

  1770. market,

  1771. where you

  1772. did your

  1773. shopping.

  1774. Not that

  1775. they're pagan

  1776. or anything,

  1777. just so you

  1778. get the idea,

  1779. picture it.

  1780. And you

  1781. get there a

  1782. lovely piece

  1783. of meat for

  1784. your meal,

  1785. a lovely

  1786. roast dinner.

  1787. The meat

  1788. that you

  1789. got there

  1790. was the

  1791. food used

  1792. in idol

  1793. worship,

  1794. the leftovers.

  1795. But not

  1796. only that,

  1797. most of the

  1798. idol worship

  1799. also involved

  1800. some kind of

  1801. sex ritual

  1802. as well.

  1803. That's the

  1804. phrase here

  1805. from sexual

  1806. immorality.

  1807. And one

  1808. temple we

  1809. know from

  1810. Ephesians,

  1811. that there

  1812. were a

  1813. thousand

  1814. prostitutes

  1815. involved in

  1816. pagan worship.

  1817. So when you

  1818. went to go

  1819. down to the

  1820. local market

  1821. to buy your

  1822. lunch down

  1823. there,

  1824. well you

  1825. needed to

  1826. have dark

  1827. glasses on,

  1828. you needed

  1829. blindfolds on,

  1830. you didn't

  1831. want to see

  1832. what was going

  1833. on down in

  1834. the marketplace.

  1835. It wasn't a

  1836. good place to

  1837. be to buy

  1838. your lunch.

  1839. So it's

  1840. not hard for

  1841. us to see

  1842. how it would

  1843. be a problem

  1844. for a Christian

  1845. Jew who

  1846. was used to

  1847. these very,

  1848. very strict

  1849. clean laws

  1850. about who

  1851. you're with

  1852. and what

  1853. you ate

  1854. and what

  1855. went on,

  1856. to be on

  1857. your guard.

  1858. As one

  1859. commentator put

  1860. it, it's not

  1861. so much about

  1862. the menu

  1863. here,

  1864. it's the

  1865. venue that's

  1866. the problem

  1867. that was

  1868. causing the

  1869. big issue.

  1870. So James

  1871. is not

  1872. going back

  1873. to rules,

  1874. he's encouraging

  1875. the church

  1876. to remain

  1877. united by

  1878. practising the

  1879. gospel of

  1880. grace and

  1881. saying to

  1882. them,

  1883. look guys,

  1884. don't go

  1885. down to

  1886. the marketplace

  1887. because if

  1888. you do that

  1889. you're going

  1890. to help

  1891. other people

  1892. come to

  1893. faith in

  1894. Christ.

  1895. You won't

  1896. be putting

  1897. any barriers

  1898. in the way.

  1899. Well I

  1900. don't think

  1901. we have to

  1902. go down to

  1903. the marketplace

  1904. or if we

  1905. went down

  1906. to Dunn's

  1907. we're not

  1908. going to

  1909. be worried

  1910. about food

  1911. polluted to

  1912. idols or

  1913. prostitutes

  1914. hanging around

  1915. or blood.

  1916. So what

  1917. does it mean

  1918. for us?

  1919. Well I

  1920. think these

  1921. two things

  1922. in practice

  1923. or in

  1924. application

  1925. for us.

  1926. The first

  1927. is this,

  1928. to give

  1929. grace to

  1930. others.

  1931. We all

  1932. have our

  1933. own preferences

  1934. don't we

  1935. about how

  1936. church should

  1937. be?

  1938. When we

  1939. meet,

  1940. where we

  1941. meet,

  1942. what we

  1943. do when

  1944. we come

  1945. together

  1946. and how

  1947. we should

  1948. do it.

  1949. And you

  1950. know what,

  1951. it ain't

  1952. going to

  1953. come to

  1954. a surprise

  1955. to anybody

  1956. here that

  1957. some things

  1958. that you

  1959. particularly

  1960. like,

  1961. the person

  1962. sitting beside

  1963. you might

  1964. dislike.

  1965. Is that a

  1966. surprise?

  1967. I hope it's

  1968. not.

  1969. In fact they

  1970. might find that

  1971. the things that

  1972. you do

  1973. very disruptive,

  1974. distracting,

  1975. or even

  1976. unspiritual.

  1977. So instead

  1978. of insisting

  1979. on having

  1980. things my

  1981. way,

  1982. we give

  1983. grace to

  1984. others.

  1985. To maintain

  1986. unity and

  1987. partnership in

  1988. the gospel,

  1989. we hold

  1990. loosely in

  1991. our hands

  1992. practices

  1993. and preferences

  1994. that are

  1995. secondary and

  1996. not essential

  1997. to the gospel.

  1998. That's the

  1999. approach we

  2000. take in

  2001. this church.

  2002. We serve

  2003. others with

  2004. grace,

  2005. we're on the

  2006. lookout,

  2007. helping people

  2008. to understand

  2009. the gospel,

  2010. helping them

  2011. to understand

  2012. grace by

  2013. being gracious

  2014. towards them.

  2015. And I think

  2016. we kind of

  2017. get there,

  2018. but it's a

  2019. good reminder.

  2020. But not

  2021. only do we

  2022. give grace

  2023. to others,

  2024. we've got

  2025. to apply

  2026. grace to

  2027. self.

  2028. We all

  2029. love the

  2030. idea,

  2031. don't we?

  2032. We like

  2033. the first

  2034. one,

  2035. grace to

  2036. me,

  2037. oh I'm

  2038. going to

  2039. come and

  2040. everybody's

  2041. going to

  2042. show me

  2043. grace,

  2044. which allows

  2045. me to

  2046. do what

  2047. I want

  2048. to do.

  2049. Well no,

  2050. the opposite

  2051. also applies.

  2052. We need

  2053. to apply

  2054. that same

  2055. grace to

  2056. ourselves.

  2057. So we

  2058. don't come

  2059. to a

  2060. gathering on

  2061. a Sunday

  2062. morning or

  2063. any other

  2064. time that

  2065. we meet

  2066. or any

  2067. of our

  2068. relationships

  2069. with each

  2070. other.

  2071. We don't

  2072. come into

  2073. that with

  2074. an attitude

  2075. of everybody

  2076. else is

  2077. going to

  2078. change to

  2079. suit me,

  2080. to help

  2081. me fit in.

  2082. No, the

  2083. attitude is

  2084. this, what

  2085. areas of

  2086. my life do

  2087. I need to

  2088. change?

  2089. Ask

  2090. ourselves

  2091. questions like,

  2092. is this a

  2093. gospel issue?

  2094. is this

  2095. primary or

  2096. is it

  2097. secondary?

  2098. Will this

  2099. lead to

  2100. somebody's

  2101. faith or

  2102. will it

  2103. distract them

  2104. from the

  2105. faith?

  2106. For the

  2107. sake of the

  2108. gospel, I

  2109. will not

  2110. insist on

  2111. my preference.

  2112. We are to

  2113. unite around

  2114. the gospel,

  2115. not tradition

  2116. and not

  2117. practice.

  2118. This is

  2119. why the

  2120. council,

  2121. chapter 15

  2122. of Acts,

  2123. is the

  2124. most defining

  2125. issue in

  2126. all of

  2127. church history.

  2128. Because if

  2129. we get this

  2130. wrong, we

  2131. might as

  2132. well all

  2133. go home.

  2134. And what

  2135. happens when

  2136. the church

  2137. does begin

  2138. to live

  2139. this out

  2140. and begins

  2141. to see it

  2142. working in

  2143. the lives

  2144. of each

  2145. other?

  2146. Well, look

  2147. at verse

  2148. 35, we'll

  2149. jump right

  2150. to the

  2151. end.

  2152. But Paul

  2153. and Barnabas

  2154. remained in

  2155. Antioch where

  2156. they and

  2157. many others

  2158. taught and

  2159. preached the

  2160. word of

  2161. the Lord.

  2162. Very simply,

  2163. the gospel

  2164. stood firm,

  2165. the mission

  2166. continued,

  2167. and the

  2168. church

  2169. remained

  2170. strong.

  2171. May God

  2172. give us

  2173. the grace

  2174. to do

  2175. likewise

  2176. and to

  2177. keep on

  2178. doing

  2179. likewise

  2180. with each

  2181. other.

  2182. Before we

  2183. sing,

  2184. let's just

  2185. take a

  2186. moment

  2187. to reflect

  2188. on some

  2189. of those

  2190. things.

  2191. Maybe

  2192. there's

  2193. something we

  2194. just want

  2195. to pray

  2196. privately

  2197. and quietly.

  2198. Maybe

  2199. there's

  2200. something we

  2201. want to

  2202. pray for

  2203. our

  2204. church.

  2205. Let's

  2206. do that

  2207. right now

  2208. as we

  2209. seek to

  2210. apply

  2211. grace to

  2212. one

  2213. another

  2214. and to

  2215. ourselves.

  2216. ...

  2217. ...

  2218. ...

  2219. ...

  2220. ...

  2221. Thank you.

  2222. Thank you.

  2223. Thank you.

  2224. Thank you.

  2225. Thank you.

  2226. Thank you.

  2227. Thank you.

  2228. Thank you.

  2229. Thank you.

  2230. Thank you.

  2231. Thank you.

  2232. Thank you.

  2233. Thank you.

  2234. Thank you.

  2235. Thank you.

  2236. Thank you.

  2237. Thank you.

  2238. Thank you.

  2239. Thank you.

  2240. Thank you.

  2241. Thank you.

2242. We thank you for every life, for every family represented here.

2243. We thank you for all that everybody brings and gives.

2244. We thank you for their love.

2245. We thank you for the life that you have saved,

2246. for bringing us together, for making us part of your family,

2247. for uniting us, and we praise you, we thank you

2248. for all that we have because of Christ.

  2249. It's precious, it's wonderful.

2250. And we ask for your help to go on living your way.

  2251. In Jesus' name, Amen.
